Deadline looming on civic centre land deals

With a deadline looming in three weeks on a land deal for Ashburton’s new civic centre and library, one of the parties involved, the Methodist Church, is confident it will have the sale ticked off in time.

In June Ashburton District councillors agreed that land owned by the church, by a private landowner and by itself in Baring Square East would be the site of the new complex. It set a deadline of September 30 to have the land sale deal done. If this is not achieved it will review all options including a deadline extension.

Church property committee spokesman Ken Leadley is feeling positive about the outcome of the land sale. Valuations have been completed by the church and the council and it’s simply a matter of working through the process, he said.

“It’s progressing well and while we won’t have all our ts crossed and our is dotted by then, we believe the way the conditions are worded, they’ll give us an extension.”

For the council, the deal has become a waiting game said business services manager Paul Brake.

“The paperwork is all with the landowners and we’re just waiting on them to come back to us. I’m hoping to hear something next week,” he said.

The sale will see the church divest itself of two sections. One of these includes the church hall which will be demolished. The

deal will then give the church a pool of money it is likely to use to repair and renovate its earthquake damaged, historic church.

Negotiations are also under way with a private landowner of land on Havelock Street.

The council owns the remaining land needed for the new complex and this will see the demolition of the old Ashburton County Council building.

In June councillors voted 10-3 in favour of the Baring Square east site for the new complex, making that decision after significant debate, lengthy delays and two rounds of community consultation involving significant public feedback.

They set a September 30 deadline for negotiations to be completed and said that if this did not happen all options would be reviewed, including extending the negotiation deadline. This could also see the project pushed back to the drawing board if councillors refused the deadline extension and wanted alternative sites re-introduced as options.

When councillors voted to build in Baring Square east there were two dissenters and one abstainer.

Mark Malcolm said he could not vote because he believed he did not have sufficient information, Alisdair Urquhart, a second term councillor also said he did not have enough information, but opted to vote against the option anyway.

Selwyn Price also voted against the site saying he wasn’t happy with the consultation process.

Entries flowing for annual show

A steady stream of entries is coming in for competitions at this year’s Ashburton A&P Show, to be held October 27 and 28.

This year’s show is the 140th time the event will be held.

A&P administrator Lucille Brown said the show schedules went out on August 18 and the closing date for most events was September 29.

However there were some, such as showjumping (October 19) and shearing (October 28, at the show) that will remain open after that date.

While entries for many events are mainly from within Canterbury, others attract competitors from around the South Island.

trian events come from as far afield as Blenheim and Dunedin, Brown said, while the dog trials and shearing competitions are part of a circuit, so there’s also a large number of competitors.

“The dog trials are very big, there’s dogs from all over the South Island. We’ve got a full two-day programme and it’s very popular. Last year there were well over 100 dogs.”

Applications for sites in the trade and market areas have also been flowing in and Brown said around 100 big traders will be represented at the show.

This year there will be a change in the way the market sites are positioned, she said, with the stalls being moved down to nearer the sheep judging area, so all the trade exhibitors are in one

continuous area.

The theme of this year’s show is Horse Power of Yesteryear and its focus is all-encompassing.

Clydesdale horses from Ashburton’s Dayboo Stud will take part in demonstrations showing how real horse power can be used to work machinery, while farm machinery specialists Cochranes will show off some equipment from Case IH, which this year celebrated 175 years in business.

Headlining the show’s entertainment stage will be Wanaka’s Jodie Direen, whose latest album Shake Up won the 2017 Tui Award for Best Country Album.

Brown said the show would have something for everyone and was sure to be well supported by the community.

Chopper drops in An air force chopper has touched down at Lower Hutt school, giving the pupils a surprise. For one child – 10-year-old Alex Bowmar – the unexpected landing was a dream come true. The Year 5 student at Kelson Primary School had written to the Chief of Air Force to ask if helicopters were used to deliver aid to earthquake-stricken Kaikoura and evacuated residents.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) was originally scheduled to visit the school in March but the trip was postponed due to poor weather. So when one of the choppers was on a scheduled training mission nearby yesterday the crew decided to drop in on the school. Alex and about 220 schoolmates clapped, waved and shrieked as it landed on their school’s playground.

Guns, ammo seized Guns and a significant amount of ammunition has been seized by police who are investigating the shooting of two dogs in the Wairarapa. The firearms will be forensically tested to see if they are linked to the dog killings, which happened following a street fight in Masterton. Police said at the time that following the fight someone had returned to shoot the two dogs, horrifying residents. Yesterday police said a 28-year-old man had been charged with firearms and drug offences after a search at a property led to police recovering three shotguns, a high-powered hunting rifle, and a “significant” amount of ammunition.

St Joseph’s School students may have “skipped” regular classes yesterday afternoon, but for a truly hearty cause.

The school held a Jump Rope for Heart event to celebrate fitness and raise funds for the Heart Foundation.

Students donned red outfits and bounced through a variety of skipping-rope activities – from long rope to relays and even horse-races.

Principal Cath Blacklow said the event had raised $300 for the Heart Foundation.

“And they really got into the spirit of wearing red,” she said.

Students rotated around activities in their school family groups.

Spot prizes were awarded to students wearing the reddest outfits and showing the best sportsmanship.

The afternoon was organised by Kiwi Room 8 teacher Steph McCallum.

Yawning gap in district’s economic framework

When Grow Mid Canterbury was disestablished, a yawning gap opened up in the Ashburton District’s economic framework, members of an Ashburton business organisation say.

Business Mid Canterbury members believe the Ashburton District Council is dragging the chain in plugging the gap this left in terms of economic development in the district and in providing a go-to organisation for people wanting economic advice and information.

While the council has been reviewing the way it should use the funds it sets aside for economic development work in the district, Business Mid Canterbury chair Desme Daniels said for almost 12 months there had been

no one organisation responsible for what was clearly a very important pool of information and advice.

‘The council really needs to step up with this. When Grow Mid Canterbury ceased to operate we lost a big pool of data and information,” she said.

The lack of one organisation that was the central economic information and advisory body for the district was a key issue for her members, Daniels said.

“We’d like to see something in the form of Grow Mid Canterbury, something that represents the district’s economic development and we’re happy to work alongside the council in developing this.”

Grow Mid Canterbury was dis established after the council commissioned a review of the

way it was doing business to determine whether or not it was getting value for the money it gave the organisation each year.

Business Mid Canterbury held its annual meeting this week and reinforced that it saw its role in the business community as providing member support, member advocacy and networking opportunities.

Its membership stands at 56 and growing. It is a member funded organisation, with fees paid according to business staff numbers and is an organisation for businesses of any size.

“People need to understand we’re here for all businesses in Mid Canterbury regardless of size. It doesn’t matter whether you have two staff or 50 we all face the same struggles every day, we’re all chasing revenue

and costs and we’re all dealing with personnel issues,” she said.

It was important businesses were able to support one another and to share stories, issues and ideas, Daniels said.

‘A lot of people don’t want to reach out for help in Christchurch. We can offer help and it’s free. Businesses in Mid Canterbury need to join together through Business Mid Canterbury and use our connections and networks to help each other.”

Looking ahead the organisation will continue with its regular breakfast meetings and is likely to increase networking opportunities with visits to member businesses. It also plans to bring a key motivational speaker to town in November for a public event.

Sixty-seven new citizens were welcomed to New Zealand at a special ceremony yesterday.

Record number of new citizens Ashburton just keeps on breaking records when it comes to welcoming new citizens to the district.

Yesterday 67 people took their oath of allegiance to the Queen before mayor Donna Favel in the district’s largest ever citizenship ceremony.

Already this year 112 people have become citizens of New Zealand in district ceremonies and with one more ceremony on the Ashburton District Council’s agenda this year, numbers are likely to climb towards 200.

Thieves busy

Wheeled objects have been the target of Mid Canterbury burglars this week.

Two motorbikes, a log-splitter and a seven-metre car transporter trailer are among items taken in the district since Sunday.

The red and white Honda motorbikes were taken from a property on Burnett Street in Allenton.

Their owners have been appealing for any information about the theft.

Mikayla Green said both belonged to her younger brother. Her family noticed them missing from their shed on Wednesday morning.

“My family have been angry and upset about them being stolen,” she said.

She was also struggling to understand how someone could take something that did not belong to them, which would take “a lot of money to replace”.

The thefts had been reported to police, and officers were investigating and taking fingerprints yesterday.

The car transporter trailer was taken from Mathew Schofield’s business Panel & Paint in Methven on Sunday – its loss also causing a great deal of frustration for owners. The homemade trailer features folding, heavy-duty ramps, wooden decking and advertising it as a hire trailer for Panel & Paint. Schofield said it would be worth around $5000.

“My workmate came in on Sunday and noticed it was gone,” he said.

Security cameras at the yard had captured the trailer being whisked away by a dark coloured SUV with a distinct alloy nudge bar.

However, police had not yet been able to track down the burglar.

“Not having it is a real pain,” Schofield said.

Tournament raises $520 for IHC Indoor bowlers from around the district reached into their pockets on Thursday night and raised more than $500 for a worthy cause.

The annual IHC Tournament, held at the McNally Street Stadium is a popular one for the bowling fraternity each year and a number of players turned out to take part in the 2017 edition.

With all proceeds from the night, including entry fees and raffle takings going to IDEA Ashburton, a cheque for $520 was handed

over at the completion of the night.

Winners of the tournament were the Carew foursome of Cecil Tubb, Neil Atkinson, Lizandro Rojas and Stewart Tilson who saw off a strong line up.

Second place finished in a tie between Michael Lawson’s Rakaia side and Mark Sheard’s quartet from the MSA with a bowl-off required to determine the outright runners-up.

Lawson’s bowl proved to be the closest in the bowl-off and he, John Gibbs, Jim Stewart and Tom Palatchie claimed second place.

Christ Church Cathedral was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

Church urged to restore cathedral Christchurch politicians have urged the Anglican Church to restore Christ Church Cathedral as the church’s synod prepares to vote on the earthquake-crippled building’s future today.

Regeneration Minister Nicky Wagner and Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel both spoke to the 200-member synod yesterday at St Christopher’s Church in Avonhead as it discusses the cathedral’s fate.

Dalziel says the Gothic-style 136-yearold landmark building is the heart and soul of the city and the council unanimously backs its reinstatement.

Wagner told the synod that Cabinet has already approved reinstatement legislation so it is the fastest way forward.

An offer of $35 million, along with legislation to fast-track the restoration, was made by the Government and Christchurch City Council in July.

Arguments over whether the building in the heart of Christchurch should be restored to its former glory, partly reinstated, or demolished and replaced with a modern new building have raged between the church, heritage campaigners, and the wider public over the past six-and-a-half years.

On Thursday night, head of the Canterbury Anglican Church Bishop Victoria Matthews said the cathedral isn’t the biggest concern for the church.

Matthews told the synod there are much greater concerns facing the church, including child poverty and climate change.

The group is to debate the cathedral’s future today on either restoration, gifting the building to the Government, or demolition and replacing with a new cathedral.

A final vote is due to take place early this afternoon.

Wanaka residents wake up to a large mudslide A large mudslide has blocked a main Wanaka road.

Multiplied Investment Partners spokesman Matt Tuck said a passing motorist notified the company of water across the road from the Marina Terrace building site at 65 Lakeside Road on Thursday night.

He said a slow moving mudslide moving about a metre an hour began at about 9pm and did not stop until 3am on Friday morning.

“The top 1200 to 1500mm of soil on the site has been of concern, and while the site held up well in the significant rainfall earlier in the week, some localised works has caused an area of the site to weaken and slip,” Mr Tuck said.

He said crew worked on site throughout Thursday night, and the head of the company’s geotechnical team was satisfied that by starting dewatering immediately and dropping the current water table by around 1 metre (which was achieved by 3am on Friday morning) the slip should be

stable enough to be removed.

The slip happened during part of preparations for dewatering the site, which would then allow the removal of a layer of waterlogged soil and green matter, he said.

As part of the site investigation prior to commencing works, the company’s consultants and contractors drilled and profiled over 100 spots across the site, recording bore logs and cataloguing thousands of metres of soil samples.

This had given its geotechnical team a very clear profile of what material they could expect to encounter on site at various depths.

Mr Tuck could not estimate how much mud had slipped but depending on whether forecast rain arrived, he expected to reopen the road by late yesterday.

The company planned to remove the top layer of material over the coming weeks and get through to the preferred working platform of tightly packed river gravels beneath, he said.

Rush to help islands French, British and Dutch military authorities rushed aid to a devastated string of Caribbean islands after Hurricane Irma left at least 11 people dead and thousands homeless as it spun toward Florida.

Warships and planes were dispatched with food, water and troops after the fearsome Category 5 storm smashed homes, schools and roads, laying waste to some of the world’s most beautiful and exclusive tourist destinations.

In Haiti, two people were injured by a falling tree, and roofs were torn from houses along the northern coast but there were no immediate reports of deaths.

About a million people were without power in Puerto Rico after Irma sideswiped the island.

The first islands hit by the storm were scenes of terrible destruction.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said four people were confirmed dead and about 50 injured on the French side of St Martin, an island split between Dutch and French control, where homes were splintered and road signs scattered by the fierce winds.

The toll could rise because rescue teams had yet to get a complete look at the damage.

At least four people were killed in the US Virgin Islands, and officials said they expected to find more bodies. Authorities described the damage as catastrophic and said crews were struggling to reopen roads and restore power.

Irma also slammed the French island of St Barts, tearing off roofs and knocking out electricity in the high-end tourist destination.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said 100,000 food rations were sent to St. Barts and St. Martin, the equivalent of four days of supplies.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the storm “caused wide-scale destruction of infrastructure, houses and businesses”.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said he would go to the islands as soon as the weather permits it.

A lifetime of hospitality already Andy and Nikita Moore have a lot to thank the hospitality industry for already.

It’s provided them with careers, experience and money over many years, but most importantly it led them to each other.

And now, the young couple, who are the owners and operators of Ashburton’s newest slice of ‘hospo’ – Cleavers Corner – are looking forward to giving a little back to the industry that’s served them so well.

The pair met and bonded while working locally at a restaurant in Ashburton and ever since then it’s been a goal to own and operate their own establishment.

“Because we both have had such big backgrounds in the industry, it’s something we used to talk about a lot,” Andy said.

“It was always going to be an end goal for us, but it’s come along a lot quicker than what we probably expected it to.”

They’ve been around the traps with Andy having more the 12 years’ worth of experience across

a number of kitchens here in Ashburton and further afield while Nikita is a graduate of Queenstown’s renowned Resort College and has been a part of the makeup at the prestigious

George Hotel in Christchurch for a number of years too.

So, you could safely say that they know what they’re doing.

The decision to come back and set up somewhere in Ashburton

was the easy part of the whole process as they’d spent far too much time travelling to and from each other over the past few years.

“After Andy and I met, I actually moved to Queenstown as I studied hospitality management at the Queenstown Resort College,” Nikita said.

“I did my placement for the course at the George Hotel and when I finished up I initially worked for the college and then went back to the George and have been there, on and off for the past five years.”

“I lived up in Christchurch for a while, and then did the commute, but it just got to the point where it was just too much.”

Married for two years in December, there’s been plenty of water go under the bridge for the popular couple – but you get the distinct impression that what you see now is only the tip of the iceberg – and the best is yet to come.

Location is everything Location is everything and for Andy and Nikita Moore, finding the perfect spot to turn dreams into reality was always the first target.

With a plan in place and an end goal sitting on the edge of the horizon, all they needed was somewhere to call home and a chance discovery by Andy’s father, led them to the corner of Tancred and West Streets.

“The for lease sign had just come up and Andy’s Dad happened to drive past,” Nikita said.

“He told us that it might be worth getting in touch with Donald Williamson who owns the building to see whether he might be keen to turn it into a restaurant.

“That was two years ago, Andy went and had the initial meeting with him and the rest is history, really.”

Both Andy and Nikita were extremely thankful for Williams’ input into the whole process and his understanding of it too.

“

With a building locked in, the big task of fitting it out to meet their vision was the next phase and both agreed that they received help above and beyond

the call of duty from contractors and some of their friends.

“We had guys working here through the whole process late into the night most nights, we

were incredibly lucky,” Andy said.

“We wanted the place to have the feel of being similar to your normal pub type set up, but also with a bit of class to it.

“And thanks to the hard work of everyone right down, we’ve been able to have a restaurant that is exactly what we wanted it to be.”

With its deep and dark fittings, the feel you get inside the doors is one of a relaxed atmosphere with a hint of elegance mixed in and the clever positioning of the feature divider between the restaurant and the bar area allows them to cater for all types of customer.

But it is the location that makes Cleavers Corner unique.

The western side of the central heart of Ashburton isn’t renowned for its eateries and you could say that it is the first of its kind.

Away from the true central business district, but in a location which catches the eye as you drive down the main road, the benefits are there for all to see.

“It’s got that point of difference about it because of where it is I think,” Nikita said.

What’s in a name Both Andy and Nikita are pretty quick to admit there is no great story behind the name and brand of Cleavers Corner.

During their initial conversations about opening up some form of restaurant the original plan, or idea, was that they would develop an establishment that was somewhat of a steakhouse and from that Andy was keen to see a cleaver incorporated into the name.

“I was pretty keen to have cleavers in there somewhere to represent the meat and food aspect of it all,” Andy said.

Plans changed, ever so slightly, when they found their location and being on the corner of a bustling and always busy main highway left them with little choice at the end of the day.

“Because we were on the corner, it all of a sudden became Cleavers Corner and although we came up with a hundred other ideas, we always seemed to keep

coming back to it and so it stuck,” Nikita said.

“I actually do wish there was a better story to it.”

With the cleaver as part of the

name, the next goal was to have it as part of the brand.

They enlisted the help of a friend to come up with a brand for the business – and initially

the plan was to have two meat cleavers crossing over.

“That was what we really wanted for a start, but Charlotte, who did our branding, said that

we might look a little bit too much like a butchery – which changed things a little bit as we hadn’t really thought about that.”

Continuing on with their theme of wanting to pay homage to the building in its original state, prior to it being fitted out for the new restaurant both Andy and Nikita expressed, an interest in bringing that into the brand in some way, shape or form.

“Charlotte asked what else the big focus was for us and we said how we wanted to incorporate the old building and that’s why we have the pictures of it up in the restaurant,” Nikita said.

“She said to leave it with her and she would come up with something and the brand we have is the end result.

“We love it and although the cleaver, which was such a big part of the initial idea is down the bottom, the name is still there and it’s become quite unique to us.”

Top team key to a great business Without a great team behind you, running a successful restaurant is impossible, says Cleavers Corner joint owner Nikita Moore.

It’s been four weeks since she and husband Andy opened the doors of the West Street restaurant and every week has been busy with full houses many nights and a steady flow of customers during the day. While that could have been chaos it was anything but, and that has absolutely everything to do with the team in the kitchen, behind the bar and providing table service, she said.

“If you hand pick a team, this one’s the ideal. The key is they’re all people-people.”

With a few days training behind them, her team settled in quickly and have formed a tight-knit group that’s working seamlessly together, Nikita said.

“They’ve absolutely exceeded my expectations. They were coping with a full house within

two days and they were still able to laugh and that’s great. It feels like we’ve been here for months.

We’re a great working team, we all get on so well.”

When she was looking for staff, Nikita said she was determined to employ only those who would fit with her staff philosophy.

“When I employ I look

for people who have a great personality. You can teach them everything else they need to know but you can’t teach them attitude.

Your staff are your biggest asset

in any business. Our staff get the job done and they have fun,” she said.

Before the doors opened staff went through menu training with several tasting nights to ensure they were familiar with each dish.

“It’s important they know what they’re selling. Coming from the George we were trained to understand that there was no excuse for wait staff to say ‘I’ll go and ask the chef’. They should know the answer, you’re expected to know what’s on the menu.”

The only exception would be if a diner wanted a variation on a dish and then a quick check with the chef might be needed, Nikita said.

Her staff understand that the customer experience is what determines the business success and they understand that while the quality of food is paramount, they have a huge role to play in ensuring those diners leave the restaurant knowing they’ve also received great service, she said.

Celebrating the best of food, wine and For many restaurants, coming up with a great menu for just one meal of the day is a challenge; the team at Cleavers Corner, however, have come up with three great menus for three meals.

Four weeks into their new business, Nikita and Andy Moore say they and chef Sai Mohapatra are still tweaking that menu, adding and subtracting dishes, but they say customer feedback is already telling them there are some dishes that must never disappear.

Their food philosophy is simple – traditional, familiar food, with little hints from a range of international cuisines added along with the odd, unexpected twist.

They make their own sauces, dips and accompaniments in the restaurant kitchen and adhere to the principles of fresh ingredients, local ingredients where possible and to ensuring the words on the menu tell the real story about each dish.

Cleavers kitchen a dream job The opportunity to don his chef’s whites and take a lead role in the Cleavers Corner kitchen was a gift anyone who makes a living from food would have grabbed with both, says chef Sai Mohapatra.

He’s joined forces with fellow chef and Cleavers Corner owner Andy Moore to lead the kitchen team in Ashburton’s newest eatery and four weeks down the track he’s still smiling.

Sai came to New Zealand from India four years ago to further his culinary education.

He secured a position at Christchurch’s The George and that effectively laid the foundations for a career path that would lead to Ashburton.

Fellow restaurant owner Nikita Moore was on the staff as a member of the front of house team and when she and Andy decided to establish a new restaurant in Ashburton, Sai was top of their staff list.

“I didn’t even have to be

persuaded to come. I love it, I just love it here,” he said.

Four weeks since opening day and Sai admits he’d be happy to be at work every day, all day.

He and Nikita had established a great working relationship at The George that often saw each instinctively understand what the other wanted or needed in

the restaurant. That’s carried over to Cleavers Corner and has been key in ensuring the food side of the business runs smoothly from kitchen to table.

Sai and Andy lead the kitchen team and along with Nikita developed the restaurant’s menu across breakfast, lunch, dinner and bar snacks.

They’ve borrowed a little bit from several international cuisines, but the over-riding factor was ensuring fresh food was used, sauces and accompaniments were made on the premises and that there was a local element that retained familiarity, but with a twist.

Sai believes it is important diners recognise the food they’re eating and with that in mind a menu that is based on tradition but taken to a new level is their signature.

If he has a favourite among the many dishes on offer, Sai admits it’s the pork ribs. They’re a generous serve, slow smoked and

then glazed. He’s excited about a special smoker combi oven that’s been installed to ensure every rib is a perfect rib.

He says a diner’s challenge is to eat the lot and stay clean.

Devising a menu that meets every diners’ tastes and dietary requirements is always a challenge, and the Cleavers menu is regularly tweaked to ensure what’s on offer is what diners want. With that in mind, public feedback is always valued, Sai said.

Coming from The George’s high end restaurant where he was one of a large team of chefs, Sai said he is enjoying working with a small team.

“It’s really nice to be able to nurture staff. These young staff put heart and soul into their food and that reignites me,” he said.

Combine that with the opportunity to be part of a team that is growing a business from the ground up, and life couldn’t be better, Sai said.

W

e can take a real positive out of the record-breaking citizenship ceremony in Ashburton yesterday.

A total of 67 people took the pledge of allegiance in front of a large crowd and mayor Donna Favel at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, as our region continues to widen its cultural landscape with a rising number of new, and old, ethnic groups joining us.

Already this year we have welcomed 112 new citizens – and that number could rise again as more and more people flock to our beautiful little part of the world.

With wide ranging opportunities for anyone from any walk of life we really do offer a great deal more than what we probably realise for people looking from the outside in and deciding on whether or not they want to move here or not.

We take for granted a lot of the time what this district has at its doorstep, not just from an entertainment point of view but also from an employment position and, most importantly, a way of life.

Ashburton, and its surrounds, are often like one big family.

As has been said before, we have each other’s backs and when the chips are down, we roll our collective sleeves up and get stuck in.

If it was me looking for a new region to move into, that would be one of the major selling points.

If I can see that there’s a real community spirit about the place, a place in which everyone is looking out for everyone, I’m going to take more than just a cursory glance at least.

Another real highlight about yesterday’s ceremony was the diverse number of backgrounds and cultures we saw on the stage.

People really have come from far and wide to enjoy this area alongside us.

We saw British, Samoan, Indian, Fijian, Filipino, Neplaese, South African, Argentinian, Australian and Canadian people take the pledge of allegiance and declare themselves one of us.

And if that doesn’t make us a more diverse and culturally aware region then nothing will.

So welcome to the clan, those of you who were awarded citizenship – the Ashburton District is all the better for your presence.

I actually studied Plato and his writings when training to be a teacher. I never thought his words would have that much meaning until this election.

I just believe when politicians make stupid statements, it is my legal obligation to give a sarcastic remark.

And so the leader and only MP of the Act party opened his mouth about education this week.

When David Seymour opened his mouth and started a conversation about education, I wondered if I should have brought a ladder so he could step out of my business. I mean I could agree with you David, but then we would both be wrong.

It was fortunate he was speaking because if he wrote down every sensible thought he had about what’s best for education, he would get an award for the shortest story ever.

Okay, sorry Act Party supporters. David, I will try being nicer if you try being smarter. When David launched his billion dollar plan for education, his audience of 200 people must have

been hanging on his every word.

(More people attend our school end of year assembly than his party’s campaign launch).

What Act is proposing is to pay teachers up to $20,000 more if they sign up to individual contracts and demonstrate effective performance.

What’s wrong with that you may ask?

Well how do you judge good performance? Which teacher is better – the one who teaches a child to read, or the one who teaches a child to use their reading to further their learning?

If a teacher has a class of children at the start of the year, who can all read at their age level, and they stay that way for the whole year, are they better than a teacher who helps five struggling readers reach their age level by the end of the year?

What about a teacher who quietly tells one student to never stop drawing after looking

at their books one day. And then years later is told by that child’s mother that all she has done since is draw and she hopes to be a cartoonist or an artist. The mother was so happy with the comments I made to her daughter in my class.

I saw her drawing in the back of her writing book. I could have told her off. Instead I simply said I really liked her drawings and hopes she never stops drawing.

Her mum said it was those comments that motivated her to draw all the time and how much she loved doing so.

How do you judge a good and great teacher?

And what is even more alarming is under the hare-brained announcement by Act (currently polling at 0.1 per cent according to the latest poll), is that they want me, as a principal, to make the judgement about my teachers.

Teaching is not a performance indicator based job. Teaching is a complex interaction between teacher and learner. Learning is not simply about acquiring knowledge and proving you have done so.

To learn is to engage in the most complex of human activities possible. When learning

takes place, new wiring and connections are formed in our brains.

Think about that for a moment. When you learn, you alter who you are. How you demonstrate that learning is different to how others demonstrate it.

No two drivers go around a roundabout exactly the same.

So if both get around safely, and both have been taught by different instructors, how do you judge who was the better instructor?

So forgive me if I dropped some sarcasm at the start but to be honest, the proposed election bribe by Act is reckless and not attached to reality.

I began with a quote about politics so I think I need to end with one.

Larry Hardiman said “The word ‘politics’ is derived from the word ‘poly’, meaning ‘many’, and the word ‘ticks’, meaning ‘blood sucking parasites’.”

Vodafone axes email services Customers with a Vodafone email address will have to switch at the end of November, when the telco plans to axe its email services after 20 years.

Email addresses affected include its Clear and Paradise services.

Vodafone had about 200,000 to 250,000 active email users but many operate dual email accounts, a Vodafone spokesperson said.

The accounts would be switched off on November 30, however, Vodafone has promised customers it will automatically forward emails from the closed accounts to a new email of the customer’s choice, for as long as they are a Vodafone customer.

The telco was encouraging users to set up a free Microsoft or

Google email account.

Vodafone New Zealand consumer director Matt Williams said customers had told the firm its email service was not delivering on expectations.

“That’s simply not good enough for us,” Williams said.

“We’ve made the decision to close the service and connect customers who need a hand setting up a new account to the email experts, Google Gmail and Microsoft Outlook.”

The move follows issues over the past few months including high levels of spam and delayed mail.

The company said many of its customers already had alternative web-based email services “with greater functionality” such as Gmail and Outlook, which

Glassons head resigns Di Humphries (above) will leave Hallenstein Glasson Holdings at the end of the month after almost a year-and-a-half back at the clothing chain, having returned the Glassons women’s wear brand back to profitability.

Humphries rejoined the Auckland-based retailer in April last year after a stint as chief executive of Pumpkin Patch before the children’s clothing chain’s inability to cope with shrinking sales and too much debt ultimately sank the company.

Humphries had run Glassons before the shift to Pumpkin Patch and her return has previously been touted as helping turn the business around.

“Di rejoined the company in April 2016 with a specific mandate to lead a key transformational change, build an effective management team and restore profitability,” Hallenstein Glasson chief executive Mark Goddard said in a statement.

“Having substantially achieved those objectives, Di has now resigned to pursue other interests and projects.”

Hallenstein Glasson boosted sales 7 per cent and profit by 25 per cent in the year ended August 1, bouncing back from 2016 when the struggling women’s wear division and a margin squeeze from increasingly expensive imports sapped earnings.

There’s been weeks of speculation but in less than a week Apple’s newest iPhone will be revealed to the world.

Rumours about its design, features, size and price have been circulating and generating hype for months.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When will the iPhone be revealed?

Apple’s annual announcement event will be held Wednesday morning (NZ time). A webcast is expected on Apple.com.

The announcement will be the first to be held in Apple’s new Steve Jobs Centre in Cupertino, California.

The 1000-seat auditorium is named after the firm’s founder, who unveiled the very first iPhone 10 years ago.

Chief executive Tim Cook will show the phone to media and guests at Apple Park, which is known as its “spaceship” headquarters for its circular shape.

What will it look like?

Insiders expect the new iPhone 8 to be substantially different from its previous models.

The iPhone is tipped to have an edge-to-edge screen and no home button. The model could be made entirely from glass and metal, allowing the phone to charge wirelessly.

A refreshed dual-lens camera is tipped to elevate Apple’s focus on augmented reality and its use in day-to-day life.

Facial recognition technology has been rumoured to be a feature of the phone, as well, with

How much will it cost?

While it’s hard to know exactly how much the iPhone 8 will cost Kiwi customers, it’s expected to be at the top end of the price scale.

Samsung’s new Note 8 will cost $1599 when it goes on sale in stores in New Zealand on September 22.

The iPhone 8 could cost more and speculation has suggested the price could reach $2000.

The iPhone 7 Plus is on sale from $1429 currently.

When will it be available?

Apple will announce its of-

ficial release date next Wednesday, but devices are usually on sale in its online store about a week after the event.

When the phone will arrive on New Zealand’s shores is hard to tell, but last year the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were in eager customer’s hands a week after the launch event in California.

Demand for the iPhone 8 is expected to be huge and some reports have suggested Apple will struggle to keep up with demand, meaning some customers might have to wait until the end of the year to get their hands on the phone.

Shield up for grabs

With the Hanan Shield on the line this weekend, Mid Canterbury’s Heartland clash against their old foes South Canterbury is going to have a lot of weight behind it.

Mid Canterbury have made four changes to their starting line-up that will attempt to take the Hanan Shield back that was narrowly lost last year.

Adam Williamson makes his first Heartland start of the year, coming in for the injured Mark Andrew.

“He had a few injury issues with his knee throughout the season and he has had a scan and will probably be out for a couple of weeks,” co-coach Craig Dunlea said.

Openside flanker Kurt Polson returns to the pack, with eyes on the size of the South Canterbury pack after the Hammers struggled somewhat against North Otago last week.

Tyler Blackburn starts his first Heartland game of the year as well, in a straight swap with Will Mackenzie, who drops to the bench.

“Tyler has had an impact in all the games he has played and he deserves a chance at starting,” Dunlea said.

“It is going to be a good battle between the pair of them this season.”

Second-five Nete Caucau returns to the starting lineup while Tom Hanham-Carter departs for the Jock Hobbs Tournament, partnering Regan King, who returns to his natural centre position.

Two new names to the Heartland team appear on the bench, with loan signing Rupert Elworthy coming in to cover the lock position, while a face familiar to Hammers fans of several years ago, Willie McGoon, makes his return to the first team.

“We were quite light at cover for lock, and he (Elworthy), will be a physical heart to the team,” Dunlea said.

“Willie has come back from shoulder surgery so it was just a case of him coming through the A team as he has only played a couple games of club rugby.

“He is an out-and-out finisher, which is great.”

With the Hanan Shield on the line, and the possibility of back-to-back defeats, Dunlea said picking up the win is quite important.

“We are definitely a bit sore from losing it (the Hanan Shield) last year and it adds a bit more to the game, you always want to be playing for silverware,” he said.

“It is quite important to keep momentum going, there are a couple of key guys that probably didn’t have the best games last week so it will be a chance for them to step up.

“We know we’ve let ourselves down over

One player who has been catching the eye with his appearances off the bench is substitute hooker Phill Mills.

After only being in the country since April, Mills has already taken to the field in a Ranfurly Shield Challenge, two Heartland Championship games, and will be lining up for his third today, which has the added emphasis of being a Hanan Shield clash.

“I came over in April … just to play a bit of rugby because New Zealand is the place to be for it,” he said.

“I wanted to get as high as I could, but I wasn’t really expecting to be playing for Mid Canterbury this season, maybe in a couple of seasons.”

Mills started his rugby playing career at age 11, playing for his hometown club, Bolton Rugby Club, before playing for teams in the third and fourth tiers of the English game.

While football rules the roost of ball sports in England, Mills said he only ever really played five-a-side, and even then that was for fitness, with rugby being his passion.

“It is interesting over here.

“Walking down the street here you see

all the kids in the schools have got rugby balls in their hands and are playing rugby, while over in England it is footballs,” he said.

“I love the rugby over here, the fast paced style of rugby is really great.”

While he has been getting regular and good minutes off the bench, Mills has his eyes on a starting spot.

“It is tough being behind someone as solid as Jackson (Donlan), and he is the captain as well which makes it hard,” he said.

“I’ve just got to keep working hard and keep seeing if I can get into that starting spot.”

In brief Tour extended New Zealand’s cricketers will have a new stop on their limited-overs tour to India in October. They have three ODIs and three T20s, preceded by two warmup games in Mumbai starting on October 17.

The final match of the tour, the last T20, will be played at Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala state on the south east coast of India. New Zealand were invited to fill the space officially listed for a visit by Pakistan, but the political situation between the two countries meant that tour was never going to take place. - NZME

Shield’s history recorded

What started out as a personal look through the history of the Wakanui Hockey Club turned Brian Wilson into an author, with members from throughout the years gathering on Thursday evening to have a look through hs new book and catch up over a few beers.

“It started out as a selfish kind of thing where I was just putting some clippings and photos together, and as I was ringing around people starting to pick up quite an interest,” Wilson said.

“It took me about two years

to do, going through all the old newspaper clippings.

“The hardest part was probably getting all the team photos together.”

The book contains history of the Walker and Hall Shield, which is contested between the clubs of Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago, with Wakanui being the first team from Mid Canterbury to win the shield in 1941.

Wilson said back at that time, the shield was insured for 100 pounds, “which probably was a lot of money back in those days”.

“South Canterbury Hockey

wrote to Walker and Hall requesting a cup to be made, and the chairman in England wrote back saying a cup would not be suitable, and a shield would be made,” he said.

“It would rival the Ranfurly Shield in its size, that’s how impressive it is.”

Throughout the book, ranging from 1941 through to recent years, familiar names continue to pop up.

“It is a real family club, back in the day at Wakanui School they didn’t have rugby posts or balls, they played hockey, it was a real hockey school,” said Wilson.

Tom Bennett is the only player from the first team to win it in 1941, with his sons and their sons also representing the Wakanui side.

Despite the length of time since the game, the 98-year-old said he can still remember the match clearly.

“We travelled down to Oamaru to win it, and we were the first team to bring it back to Ashburton,” he said.

The book is a collection of old newspaper clippings and photographs, and includes a section on when the club won the shield for the fifth year in a row in 2015.

“We’re working really hard to understand the interpretations that all the umpires bring,” she said.

And although Southby is pleased with the way her players have been adapting so far, she says there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

“I think the girls are doing a really good job of making sure they understand, seeing what it is and adjusting.

“But we also need to have a chat with the umpires to find out and get the interpretation and understanding of what they’re seeing as well.”

Big finish for Hutt

Mount Hutt College finished the South Island Mixed Hockey Tournament on a bright note yesterday, finishing with winning three matches on the bounce.

After picking up wins against Garin College and St Peter’s College Palmerston North, the Hutt faced off against John Paul II in the battle for ninth and tenth.

After trailing 1-0 after halftime, Mount Hutt fired in to the lead with two goals in as many minutes, and looked to have control of the game.

John Paul II College hit the desperation button, bringing their keeper out in a move that almost paid off.

The free man they were able to push forward flicked the ball into a dangerous area in the box, and despite a heroic effort from Mount Hutt goalkeeper Adam Shears, the ball found its way in to the back of the goal.

However, having no goalkeeper at the back came back to haunt John Paul II, with their defence unable to stop a cross that was eventually bundled in after striking a few feet in the circle.

This left no time for John Paul II to mount a comeback, securing Mount Hutt ninth place in the tournament.

In other results, Garin College avoided the wooden spoon, defeating St Peter’s College Palmerston North 2-0.

Kavanagh College secured seventh, beating Rangiora High School 5-2, while Mount Aspiring College picked up fifth in a close, 4-3 victory against Otamatea High School.

Third place went to Greymouth High School, who won their playoff against the side from Dunstan High School 4-3 also.

Wakatipu High School took out the top honors, winning the final 3-1 against St Peter’s College Gore.

Patriots stumble badly in NFL season-opener There were big plays all over the field.

But it was the Chiefs, and not the Patriots, who were making them.

Alex Smith threw two long touchdown passes and rookie Kareem Hunt, after fumbling on his first NFL carry, scored three times to help Kansas City stun New England 42-27 in the season opener.

Coming off their sensational Super Bowl rally to a fifth Lombardi Trophy, the Patriots faded

badly in the second half yesterday.

A raucous sold-out crowd of 65,878 celebrated the unveiling of yet another championship banner, and there was plenty of talk about Tom Brady leading them to a 19-0 record.

After Week 1, though, they are winless.

It was the first time the Patriots lost at Gillette Stadium when leading at halftime, a span of 82 games.

They were no match for the

Chiefs in the last two periods.

Tyreek Hill scored on a 75-yarder and Hunt put the Chiefs in front with a 78-yarder to punctuate Kansas City’s charge after trailing 17-14 at halftime.

Hunt also had a 58-yard scamper and finished with 141 yards rushing and 98 receiving.

Hill had 133 yards through the air, and Smith went 28 for 35 for 368 yards and four touchdowns.

Brady, the 13th quarterback to start an NFL game at age 40, didn’t look too spry.

He struggled mightily in the second half and didn’t throw for a touchdown, finishing 16 for 36 for 267 yards.

Patriots newcomer Mike Gillislee scored on three short runs, becoming the first player since Terrell Owens of Philadelphia in 2004 to score three touchdowns in his debut with a new team.

New England failed twice in the first quarter on short-yardage runs, by Gillislee and Super Bowl hero James White, and again in the fourth period, by Gillislee.

If anyone proclaimed that the Patriots were missing RB LeGarrette Blount, who scored 18 TDs last season and was a beast in such situations, well, Gillislee, who came from Buffalo as a restricted free agent, ran in for a pair of 2-yard touchdowns and a 1-yarder.

Additionally, Kansas City aided the Patriots’ cause with 15 penalties for 139 yards.

Yet, in the end, it was the Chiefs who were looking like worldbeaters.

Pals face off in Open final

BY HOWARD FENDRICH Sloane Stephens was two points from defeat against Venus Williams in one US Open semi-final before pulling out the victory.

Madison Keys faced no such test, overwhelming CoCo Vandeweghe in the other semi-final.

Now Stephens and Keys, a pair of pals in their early 20s, will face each other in the first Grand Slam title match for each – and the first all-American women’s final at Flushing Meadows since 2002.

Stephens summoned some of her best strokes when she needed them the most, steeling herself when so close to defeat and taking the last three games of a back-and-forth thriller, edging seven-time major champion Williams 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 yesterday.

“I have a lot of grit,” said the unseeded Stephens, who is ranked 83rd after having surgery on her left foot in January and is the fourth unseeded finalist at the tournament in the Open era, which dates to 1968.

“I don’t give up. Like, I’m not just going to give it to someone.

“I’m not just going to let them take it from me.”

The 15th-seeded Keys, who dominated No. 20 CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in barely more than an hour, had her own recent health issue to deal with.

She missed the first two months of this year after an offseason procedure on her left wrist, then needed another procedure in June because of pain in that arm.

“I think I played pretty well tonight,” Keys said in what amounts to quite an understatement.

She had 25 winners to only nine unforced errors, never faced a break point and needed barely more than an hour to win.

This was the first time in 36 years that all four women’s semifinalists at the US Open represented the host country, so it was understandable if spectators in Arthur Ashe Stadium were conflicted about which players to pull for.

At 37, Williams was attempting to become the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era. She was trying to reach her third major final of this season, something she last did 15 years ago.

Here’s how long and successful her career has been: Williams’ first title match in New York came in her US Open debut in 1997.

Stephens was four at the time.

“I’m honestly just honoured to be able to play at the same time as her, one of the greatest ever to play our game,” said Stephens, who joined spectators in clapping for Williams when she walked off the court.

Williams was ahead 5-4 with Stephens serving at 30-all. Two points away.

“Venus knows it’s an opportunity lost,” said her coach, David Witt, “because she had it. She had it on her racket.”

But with Williams two points away from winning, they engaged in a 25-stroke point, until Stephens conjured up a backhand passing winner down the line, then wheeled and pumped her fists.

“That was good, huh?” Stephens said later.

At 5-all, Stephens broke with the help of a rainbow of a winner – “That lob-thingy,” she’d call it – that drew a standing ovation from the crowd, and a full-sprint to get a short ball that she turned into a “How did she do that?!” point-ender at an impossible angle.

“There was nothing I could do about those shots,” Williams said.

Soon enough, Stephens was serving out the biggest win of her career – and of her impressive comeback from surgery. She returned to the tour at Wimbledon in July, losing in the first round, and lost her next match, too.

Her ranking, which reached No. 11 in 2013, dropped out of the top 900.

But since then, Stephens has won 14 of 16 matches.

“I mean Sloane is a new person right now,” the 22-year-old Keys said. “I think she’s really loving being back on the court again and she’s just excited to be out here and playing really well.” - AP

Storm raging towards another NRL final I t’s the time that all leaguies wait all year for (apart from Origin that is) – September footy, which means finals time.

While 16 teams started the comp full of expectations of making the eight, half of them are at home licking their wounds, or telling/making plans to tell their coaches that their services are no longer required.

That last scenario applies especially to the Rabbitohs’ Michael McGuire, who was ‘released from his contract’ this week, with his team languishing in 12th spot, a long long way from where the action is.

The old saying that a coach is either being sacked or waiting to be sacked rings true, no matter what history that coach might have produced.

In this case McGuire took the Bunnies to a Grand Final victory only three years ago, but since then has been unable to rekindle

the magic, so he’s suddenly part of club history.

He’s gone, but eight coaches remain, and this year Craig ‘Bellyache’ Bellamy’s Melbourne Storm charges are hotter favourites than Jacinda to continue their superb lead-up form and take top honours.

They’ve always been there or thereabouts, especially with the vaunted Big Three operating together – but now that elite group appears to be a Big Five, or Six, or Seven . . .

Despite advancing years, Cam Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater somehow seem to be getting better, while the likes of Cameron Munster, Jesse Bromwich, Nate Myles, Will Chambers, and a group of promising youngsters means the Storm have massive strikepower right across the park.

They remind one very much of the Crusaders; players go there

and in a near-perfect environment they thrive and play way above their expectations – sort of a complete reverse to that New Zealand outfit who play in the same competition, but don’t seem to feature in this year’s final eight.

That team remains an enigma that commentators have again puzzled over this year – every solution to their ongoing woes seems to have been tried, but there’s something deeply wrong at Mt Smart, and it doesn’t look like getting better any time soon.

Bring in hard-nosed Aussie players?

Done that.

Employ an international ‘spine’ that oozes class and proven ability? Done that.

Get a super-coach?

Well, they had one once, who took them to a grand final, but it appeared that someone at the head table didn’t get on with him, and he was given the McGuire treatment.

Next year they gain fine players Adam Blair and Gerard Beale, which only means that Blair and Beale’s careers will take on a sudden downward trajectory.

Anyway, despite Bellamy’s protestations that nothing in footy is a certainty, the Storm will face the Eels today in a qualifying final, and notwithstanding surprise package Parramatta’s hot current form, Melbourne with be marching inexorably toward another grand final.

Fun fact: It’s 2987 days since the Eels saw finals footy.

Bring it on!

Edwards in, Blake out Penrith have been given a massive boost ahead of their elimination NRL final against Manly tonight with fullback Dylan Edwards set to return from a knee injury.

Edwards, who was considered a touch-and-go prospect at the start of the week, has not played since he suffered a grade-two medial ligament tear against St George Illawarra in round 25. Though heavily strapped, he got through training unscathed and coach Anthony Griffin expects him to run out at Allianz tonight.

Finals prep ‘spot on’ In an ominous warning for their NRL title rivals, Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy can’t recall a better finals preparation for his team than this season. But Bellamy has rubbished talk the title is the Storm’s to lose. Ahead of their qualifying final against Parramatta today at AAMI Park – where they will also celebrate captain Cameron Smith’s new NRL games record – Melbourne feel their build-up has gone to plan. Given they’ve only missed the finals once – when stripped of points for salary cap breaches – in his 15 seasons as coach it’s a big call.

No Sharks mercy North Queensland have the most expensive casualty ward of any team in the NRL finals, but Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan says the Sharks have no sympathy. The Cowboys will have co-captains Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott watching from the sidelines for Sunday’s elimination final, while Justin O’Neill is also injured. But Flanagan scoffed at suggestions the Cowboys are disadvantaged. “I think everyone is trying to pump it up to feel sorry for them, but you won’t get anything from us.” - AAP

Ennis backs Sharks They may have spluttered into the NRL finals but Michael Ennis predicts Cronulla are about to find another gear and are poised to pull off a premiership boilover.

The Sharks must do it the hard way if they’re to be the first team in 24 years to win back-to-back titles after finishing fifth. Not only is every game do-or-die, the black, white and blue are swimming against the tide of history with no team in the NRL era (since 1998) having come from outside the top four to win the grand final. Ennis, who was a part of the Sharks’ drought-breaking title win last year, said Jack Bird (shoulder) and Wade Graham (leg) shape as game-changers ahead of Sunday’s elimination final with North Queensland.

Call for coaches’ union Sydney Roosters mentor Trent Robinson has reiterated calls for the establishment of an NRL coaches’ association after his good mate Michael Maguire was sacked this week. Maguire became the third NRL coach, following Jason Taylor and Neil Henry, to be axed this year when he was caught off guard by the South Sydney board’s decision to let him go. The NSWRL also refused to renew the contract of Blues coach Laurie Daley, who joins the NRL trio in looking for another gig.

ABs rolling the dice

By Patrick Mckendry Are the All Blacks selectors rolling the dice in picking two small players – Damian McKenzie and Nehe Milner-Skudder – in their back three to play Argentina tonight?

The answer has to be “yes”, because consider this other question: Would the selectors have gone with the same combination – McKenzie, Milner-Skudder and Israel Dagg – for a test against South Africa or any of the other so-called “big” nations? I don’t think so, but I could be proved wrong as early as next week when the Boks arrive in Auckland.

Of all the changes the selectors have made for this test against the Pumas in New Plymouth, the back three set-up is the most intriguing.

There is no doubt that if Jordie Barrett hadn’t required surgery on his shoulder, the 1.96m Hurricanes player would have started the last two tests against Australia and today’s at Yarrow Stadium.

Barrett has size, althleticism and pace.

And the selectors like his calm mentality.

He has everything, really, but the 20-year-old’s time will come soon enough.

Instead, the 1.75m McKenzie has become the incumbent at the back, with the selectors wanting to give him an extended run there despite an uneven couple of tests against the Wallabies.

Interestingly, they see Dagg as more of a right wing than a fullback these days, with Ben Smith perhaps the best fullback or wing in the world and a certain starter for any big test if not injured or on sabbatical, as is the case now.

‘Sponsorship at fault’ Rugby administrators’ promise to tackle the game’s drinking culture is just empty words, according to alcohol health advocates. A review triggered by the Chiefs’ stripper scandal last year, has urged the organisation to change its attitude towards women and drinking, after finding 36 cases of misconduct in the last four years. But Alcohol Healthwatch’s Dr Nicki Jackson said New Zealand Rugby is missing the root of the problem – alcohol sponsorship. “The research is very clear, that players who receive alcohol sponsorship are much more likely to have hazardous drinking patterns.”

Highlanders sign Lomax The Highlanders have snared the signature of rising Melbourne Rebels prop Tyrel Lomax, although they’ll have to wait more than a year for his services. Lomax, the son of former Kiwis rugby league prop John Lomax, has committed to the Highlanders and NPC union Tasman for 2019 and 2020. They must wait for the 21-year-old’s contract to run its course, until the end of 2018.

Cheika punts on rookie

Damian McKenzie is now the incumbent All Blacks fullback.

Milner-Skudder, an incumbent wing during the last World Cup, has come back into the fold following his injuries (broken foot and before that, shoulder).

He has quick feet and agility, but he is also relatively short at 1.82m.

He was exposed a couple of times under the high ball in the All Blacks’ tight World Cup semifinal victory over the Springboks because while his bravery isn’t in question (the same applies for McKenzie), a taller player coming forward will usually have the ad-

vantage under the high ball.

Playing both McKenzie and Milner-Skudder against the South Africans, the No3 team in the world behind the All Blacks and England, must be considered a roll of the dice too far.

This is a big test for McKenzie, Milner-Skudder and Dagg.

For McKenzie it’s a chance to show he has learned from a few loose moments on attack in Sydney and Dunedin (two of which cost tries), Milner-Skudder because it’s his first test since the World Cup final against Australia

in November 2015, and Dagg because it’s his first since the third Lions test at Eden Park in July.

The suspicion remains, though, that Rieko Ioane will claim back the No.11 jersey from MilnerSkudder next week for the test against the Springboks at North Harbour.

The All Blacks like a player with quick feet and agility in their back three.

Ioane, at 1.9m tall and over 100kg, has pace, power and size too, and sometimes you just have to fight fire with fire.

Skipper calls for more All Blacks consistency By angelo risso A full 80-minute test performance is on the top of All Blacks skipper Kieran Read’s wish list for today’s clash with Argentina.

Read’s troops have emerged victorious from both of their Rugby Championship tests to date, but only after poor patches and periods of failed skill execution.

In last month’s Championship opener against the Wallabies, the Kiwis took their foot off the gas with a 54-6 lead to concede four second half tries and win 54-34.

In the following week’s return fixture in Dunedin, uncharacteristic All Blacks errors and an early Australian blitz put Read’s side behind the eight-ball.

Yet the world champions successfully turned a 17-0 first-half deficit into a late 35-29 triumph, having regained their composure in the second stanza.

Read hoped to avoid such a situation on Saturday in New Plymouth.

He called on his side – missing a num-

ber of regulars including Sam Whitelock, Aaron Smith, Ryan Crotty and Ben Smith – to find a degree of test consistency.

“We’re always striving for that,” Read told reporters.

“It’s just about turning up – I think we’ve got a bunch of men here who are pretty excited by the challenge of what the Argentinians present.

“We’ve just got to go out there and play as well as we can.”

While Los Pumas have struggled to recapture the form that saw them reach the 2015 World Cup semi-final, and were easily swatted aside by the All Blacks in 2016, Read maintained his side would face a genuine challenge today.

He said the All Blacks would face threats across the field.

“Their ball carriers and loose forwards are probably among the best in the world and their backs are, on their day, pretty dangerous counter-attacking. We’ve just got to adapt, and alongside that is the scrum and maul,” the 102-test Read said.

He has just 28 minutes of Super Rugby experience, but hooker Jordan Uelese is confident he will be able to hold his own when he makes his Wallabies debut against South Africa in Perth. Western Australia rugby fans are threatening to boycott the match in protest at the ARU’s decision to axe the Western Force. Hooper is confident Force fans will still turn out to support the Wallabies, and he said the team was determined to put on a good show.

The Matamata trainers have excused Charles Road his below-par effort when resuming at Ruakaka and the four-year-old remains in the mix for a crack at the Gr.1 Livamol Classic on October 7.

The stable won the Hastings feature last year with the now-retired Willie Cazals, who placed in the Listed Karaka Classic at Pukekohe in his final lead-up and they will follow the same path with Charles Road.

“That’s still the plan and he’s a natural athlete, a clean-winded horse,” Scott said.

“We’ve turned the page on the other day.

“We want to get him on some true ground and hopefully he can bounce back.”

Charles Road won the Gr.3 Manawatu Classic last season and he was spelled after finishing runner-up in the Gr.2 Championship Stakes. He resumed last Saturday, but beat only one of his Rating 85 rivals home.

“We’ve taken blood tests from him and he’s fine,” Scott said.

“He ran well below what we had hoped and he got pretty stirred up before the start.
