Quad catches fire

Firefighters are urging people to keep safety in mind when dealing with petrol after dealing with two incidents in a week.

The Pendarves Voluntary Rural Fire Force were called to a Pendarves property just before 8pm on Saturday evening after a man’s quad bike caught fire while he was refuelling it.

“It was a guy who had been refuelling his motorbike and we are not 100 per

cent sure what happened, but the bike ignited,” chief fire officer Paul Stewart said.

“It has burnt the petrol tank and the bike is a write-off.

“The fire had stopped by the time we arrived and it was in the middle of a yard so there were no buildings in danger.”

Stewart said while the man was not hurt and no buildings were damaged, there was potential for things to have ended much worse.

“It is a good reminder for people to

be careful, this was next to a 600-litre petrol tank which is not what you want, and that was next to a diesel tank as well,” he said.

The Saturday before a Tinwald man was taken to hospital with burns to his face, neck and arms after a backyard burnoff went wrong.

Big numbers for Ashburton Truck Show

Sunny skies and and a record number of trucks have left the organisers of the Ashburton Truck Show tired but happy with the success of the event.

“It was a good day,” organiser Rick Harkness said.

“We had 183 trucks enter in total, I had expected around 130 so to get that many is really good, we struggled to fit them all in.

“It is the most we have had and it is more than the previous organisers had as well.”

The event was held at the Ashburton Showgrounds and is run as a fundraiser for the Child Cancer Foundation and while he hasn’t been able to sit down and crunch the numbers, Harkness said he expects the total to be around $10,000 if not more, despite lower crowd numbers than previous years.

“It was good but it probably was down on previous years,” he said.

A prizegiving for the event was held at the Collegiate North rugby clubrooms on the Saturday night, with former All Black Stu Wilson guest speaker at the event.

“It was a great evening, he (Wilson) was brilliant,” Harkness said.

“He was a really good speaker and he interacted with the crowd and helped out with the prizegiving as well.”

Keep an ear out for sirens

They are a familiar sound in the townships across Mid Canterbury when things are going wrong, and the sirens attached to our fire stations will not be going anywhere anytime soon.

The Ashburton Fire Station had around half of the district’s callouts in 2018 and holds the most firefighters, but its siren is only active during the day.

“Years ago we deactivated the siren at night and I don’t see that changing in the foreseeable future,” Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said.

“It serves a couple of purposes, it alerts firefighters in the town and if there is any delay in the notifying (firefighters through their pager system) that there is something happening.

“It also gives the public some awareness that there is going to be things

happening on the roads and appliances driving round town and it can also reassure the people that have called something is on the way.”

At the Rakaia Fire Station the siren is active 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

“At night time we do try to get there as quickly as we can,” Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said.

“Some people like to hear it and know we are heading out and it is necessary for letting our guys know.”

Hinds Voluntary Rural Fire Force chief Dave Kingsbury said while technology has come a long way in notifying firefighters when they are needed, there was still plenty of value to having a siren at the station.

“Back when I started 40 years ago all we had was the siren if we needed to attend,” he said.

“Now there is the alerts system which

is a paging system that comes through to your pager and cellphone.

“For the ones who live a bit out of town, or perhaps work where there is a bit of noise like myself, we tend to rely on cellphones more than the pagers.

“The alarm at night sure is a hell of a help. Firefighters are tuned in to respond to that sound.”

Kingsbury said much like how people who live near to railway lines learn to ignore the sound of trains, firefighters are tuned in to react the siren at all times.

“A firefighter in a deep sleep is going to wake up to that siren and hear before they hear a cellphone or a pager buzzing,” he said.

Kingsbury said at the end of the day for the general public, having the minor inconvenience of a siren is out-weighed by the knowledge that there are emergency responders ready and waiting should they need them.

Chief fire officer Alan Burgess said it appeared the man had been trying to burn offcuts and tree trimmings and had thrown fuel on the pile to make it burn.

“But it has blown back on him and he was burned his face, neck and arms.”

The man was taken to hospital.

Burgess said people often had no time to react when things went wrong involving petrol.

“When things do go wrong it happens pretty instantly and you don’t have a shot at getting away from it,” he said.

“Some people forget as well as the burns you can get if you breathe in that super-heated air you can do some serious damage to your internal organs.”

Burgess said consideration needs to be taken when pouring petrol near hot metals where vapour could be generated, and to never use it as an additive for a fire.

“Inevitably, it goes wrong.”

Staying safe in a scam-rife world

Anyone at any time can fall victim to a scam.

They’re on the rise and scammers are becoming more sophisticated, says Ashburton’s ANZ branch manager Hayden Marshall.

He sees raising scam awareness as an important part of his job as a banking professional and regularly speaks to community groups providing them with tips about staying scam safe.

The numbers are alarming, Marshall said, and showed Kiwis were losing up to $500 million each year in scams. His bank’s data shows scams are rising at a rate of 200 per cent a year.

Scams come in a variety of forms – email, text, cold callers, investment, travel, lottery, IRD, the list goes on, but they all have one goal – to part you and your money.

There are a few things scams have in common, Marshall said.

They put pressure on you to act quickly, they’ll often ask you to keep the call confidential, there could be multiple requests for money, often in increasing amounts, the initial contact will come out of the blue and often the caller has poor English. Virtually all scams offer deals that sound too good to be true.

But with some commonsense steps and a little awareness people could protect themselves from scams, he said.

When it came to your pin number or password you should never share this with anyone, you should never send money to people you didn’t know or hadn’t met and you should always be careful about the personal information you disclosed online – or in the real world, Marshall said.

Passwords were the big challenge for many people as the ideal was to have different passwords for different accounts as there was always the challenge of remembering which passwords belonged where, he said.

For people travelling overseas, one of the most important safety steps they could take was to let their bank know when they were travelling and where. That would en-

sure they could use their credit card while they were away. Without that knowledge the bank would automatically cancel a card used off-shore on the assumption it had been stolen.

Extra security for online bank transactions could be gained by setting up a text code system with your bank and voice identification was a good form of protection with a bank’s call centre, he said.

Questions were often asked around paywave and its security. the simple answer was it was as safe as a person was with their card, Marshall said.

A card could only be used for paywave

transactions up to $80 in value and a succession of these would quickly alert a bank that something was inappropriate about a card’s use, he said.

Information on the latest scams was readily available on the website www. cert.govt.nz , www.netsafe.org.nz or www. scamwatch.govt.nz.

Marshall spoke this week to more than 20 volunteers representing a range of organisations at a session organised by Volunteering Mid Canterbury. And the questions flowed, with several attending saying they knew of people who had been scam victims.

Annual survey a chance to tell council what you think It’s an invitiation that should be impossible to refuse, an opportunity to tell Ashburton District councillors how you think they’re performing and how well the district is running.

For years the council has commissioned a telephone survey to gauge its performance. This was carried out over several weeks and asked particpants a wide range of questions.

This year, however, the council has opted

for change.

Rather than cold calling residents, 4000 names will be selected randomly from the electoral roll and will be sent an invitation to participate.

The 2019/20 survey will be carried out in four rounds rather than being carried out in one hit and it will be completed on line.

If one of the invitees does not complete the survey on line they will receive a hard copy in the mail.

The Annual Residents’ Survey will be independently carried out by Key Research, who have significant experience conducting resident surveys for councils across the country, The company already conducts the council’s Roading Perceptions Survey.

Feedback will be used to help the council determin future work programmes and budget priorities.

The first survey will be held this month.

Roads, bores and books New roads The first two roads in the new Village Green subdivision alongside Lake Hood will be known as Village Green Drive and Springdale Avenue.

Village Green Drive was chosen by developers John Skevington and Jo Ruane because it reflected the setting of the residential units within an open green space. Springdale Avenue is the name of the family farm further down Stranges Road.

Skevington was the third generation of his family to farm the property and it is now in the hands of his son Michael.

Five bore heads on wells supplying water to urban Ashburton have been raised.

Building consents For the first seven months of this year 415 building consents have been issued by the Ashburton District Council, up slightly on the same period in 2018.

After the boom years from 2012 to 2014 home consent numbers have slowed.

Liquor licensing Over the year to June 30, 335 licensing applications were made to the Ashburton District Council. Twelve of those were new applications for on, off or club licences and 28 were renewals.

There were 117 applications for special licenses and 167 manager licence renewals and new licence applications.

EA Networks inflatable The long-awaited inflatable play equipment planned for Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre has been delayed and will no longer be ready for use during the coming school holidays.

The equipment is due to arrive around October 7 but will need to be tested with staff before it is available to the public.

Waste funds available Groups looking to develop local waste minimisation projects can apply for a share of a $112,000 contestable fund from the Canterbury Waste Minimisation joint committee. The fund, however, in the past year was only partially taken up.

Groups wanting to apply should contact Ashburton District Council waste minimisation manager Craig Goodwin.

plying water to urban Ashburton have been raised as required to meet new drinking water standards but sites have still to be reinstated and the bore heads fenced. Two more boreheads are still to be raised but both require work sanitary sealing by a specialist contractor. This work will be completed next month.

One person has died in a boating tragedy in Fiordland. The boat, containing three occupants, is believed to have been swamped near the river mouth at Wairaurahiri about 3pm on Saturday, police said. The three occupants managed to swim to shore and one went to raise the alarm at a nearby lodge. However when emergency services arrived one of the two people who had remained at the beach had died.

The death will be referred to the coroner.

State Highway work

The Chertsey rail crossing is up for maintenance and this will see a temporary road created at the State Highway One crossing.

Work is scheduled from October 11-14 and the temporary crossing will be to the south.

A pedestrian/cycleway is in the design stages at the rail crossing between Kermode Street and State Highway One. This is planned for the southern side, linking with the path through the reserve.

MP Shane Jones has celebrated his 60th birthday with a cacophonous fireworks display – but for some living near his Far North home, the Saturday night stunt was no party.

The colourful NZ First MP hosted about 130 guests – among them former MPs Clayton Cosgrove and Dover Samuels, former Far North mayor Wayne Brown, and transport company boss Stan Semenoff - at his birthday bash near Kerikeri. Later in the night, residents in the area reported hearing a series of loud booms from an explosive fireworks display.

New solutions needed for waste meat disposal

A lost market in Indonesia for meat waste by-products has had a flow-on effect for supermarkets and butchers in the Ashburton District.

Because of concerns over pork contamination of products such as animal feed and biofuels that were by-products of waste meat, Timaru’s Wallace Group owned South Canterbury By-Products in Washdyke no longer collects or processes this material, leaving clients to find their own waste solutions.

While the district’s larger operators were

already disposing of their waste through their own meat waste consented procedures, the decision to stop the collection service has seen the Ashburton District become part of the solution-finding mix.

Some local businesses have been able to negotiate alternative arrangements with waste companies of their choice, council service delivery manager Neil McCann said, but the council has been working with at least two local butchers to find these other options.

of meat waste were not currently accepted at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park, he said.

“Any meat waste collected locally by the council’s contractor, EnviroWaste, is sent to the Living Earth composting facility in Christchurch for processing,” he said.

The solution for Timaru, however, was much simpler, with the council providing bins for supermarkets and butchers where waste meat and meat contaminated paper and cardboard could be deposited.

This is then taken to the Timaru Resource Recovery Park where there are composting facilities.

But Senior Constable Pehi Potaka, of Hawke’s Bay police, says “tradies” and other victims still have the chance to get their gear back if they claim ownership and can establish it belongs to them, before police go to court to seek the forfeiture order necessary for them to dispose of the haul of mainly tools and building supplies.

The lack of identifying marks on property highlighted difficulties returning stolen property, Potaka said.

Clean-up keeps streets, reserves tidy

Litter Free Ashburton Volunteers were thrilled with the turnout for Saturday’s Clean-up Ashburton day. Over 24 locals answered the call to get out and make Ashburton beautiful.

The group set their sights on cleaning up the centre of town and reserve areas on the town boundary. Their 30-rubbish-bag-haul will have gone a long way to making a difference to these public spaces.

Bev Skates said it was a great day and everything went very smoothly.

“It was nice to have children taking part with their parents.”

Skates was pleased to hear that some of Saturdays participants enjoyed their day so much they are going to going the group on a regular basis.

Officially the nationwide 2019 GJ Gardner Homes Clean Up Week runs from September 9-15, but due to Lesley Ottey from Eco Education being unavailable that week, the Ashburton date was brought forward.

Ottey and Anthea Moore, also from Eco Education, were stationed at the Ashburton District Council event trailer to co-ordinate the event. The pair were charged with handing out hi-vis vests, rubbish bags and gloves along with recording names and areas being covered.

Mental health boost for centres NZME Medical centres nationwide have been given $6 million to provide mental health services as the Government looks to spend hundreds of millions it set aside in the Budget.

The money would mean 22 general practices and a kaupapa Maori provider – which already work in the field but aren’t funded – would get assistance, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Health Minister David Clark announced yesterday.

The Government says it should mean about 170,000 patients in Northland, Auckland, the central North Island, Wellington and Canterbury keep access to help.

In Mid Canterbury, Three Rivers Health have received funding.

“It makes sense to start with those providers already offering mental health support but who have not been previously directly funded by Government for it and who did not have certainty of funding going forward,” Ardern said.

“They have received nothing to do that to date.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is expected to shortly put out a call for pitches from new providers of free mental health services from 2020. About $30 million has been set aside for the first round.

“This will be available nationally, allowing local collaborations of health providers anywhere in New Zealand to put forward proposals

for their particular region,” Clark said.

“We want to see new and existing health providers, iwi and NGO groups put forward their proposals for innovative services.”

The announcements come as the Government looks to spend $455 million set aside over four

years for widening the reach of front-line mental health services to an extra 325,000 people, particularly those with mild to moderate needs.

“We have to make sure that rather than just focusing on those who are crisis – which we also have to do – that we do much

more work in that primary mental health space, reaching and supporting people before they find themselves in a crisis situation,” Ardern told reporters at the announcement in Auckland’s Flat Bush yesterday.

Residents say they saw Bain NZME New evidence in the Bain family murder case reveals David Bain may not have been inside the family home at a time he has previously claimed.

Two Dunedin residents now say they saw a man they believe could only have been David Bain carrying out his paper run at about 7am on the morning his family was killed, Stuff reported yesterday.

Following a retrial, Bain was acquitted in 2009 of the murders of his father Robin, mother Margaret, 50, and siblings Arawa, Laniet and son Stephen after serving 13

years of a 16-year sentence.

But 25 years on, locals Greg Wilson and Fiona McLellan have told Stuff they saw a tall man who looked too old to be doing a paper run delivering paper on Every Street at about 7am on 20 June 1994. The then couple were walking to the bus stop when they spotted the man staggering along Highcliff Rd and onto Every Street where his family home was.

The pair said they told police about the unusual sighting at the time – but police told the Herald they had no record of it.

Police had undertaken an “extensive search of available documentation” but had not been

able to locate or identify any material relating to the pair’s version of events, according to a police spokeswoman.

Their sighting could be significant as it raises uncertainty around whether David Bain was home when the family computer was turned on, Stuff reported.

The defence argues Robin Bain shot his family and turned the computer on before turning the gun on himself.

While the Crown argued Bain had time to turn it on once he finished his paper run and write: “Sorry you are the only one who deserved to stay”. Earlier witness accounts claimed Bain was

standing outside the gate of his home at 65 Every Street between 6.40am and 6.45am. However the latest evidence puts him outside the house at 7am – just nine minutes before he made the call.

Bain has also struggled to recall, claiming to have gone into shock, about what happened in the 25 minutes from him arriving home and calling police at 7.09am.

Wilson and McLellan claim they both tried to contact the Bain defence team with their accounts after the 1996 trial, but never heard back. They were also never asked to give evidence at the first trial.

Twyford pilloried for KiwiBuild home target

By Claire Trevett Former Housing Minister Phil Twyford has been pilloried for his handling of the KiwiBuild portfolio, but newly released Cabinet papers on the “reset” show that the first draft back in May was very similar to that released this week.

The papers show that in early May when Twyford was still in

charge of KiwiBuild, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development set out plans for a “reset” aimed at trying to boost the number of houses being built – and sold.

It is unclear what Twyford’s verdict was of that report, but it would have widened the pool of buyers for KiwiBuild beyond first home buyers to include those such as downsizers or small-time

investors if a first home buyer did not step up.

It also made it clear just how hard it would have been to have met the target of building 100,000 homes in 10 years.

Twyford’s paper did not go so far as to recommend totally dropping the 100,000 target: the issue that got the most public attention and caused the most embarrassment.

In May, officials did tell Twyford it would remain hard to hit the 100,000 target, even by opening up KiwiBuild homes to more potential buyers and including some rental properties.

It warned the target was counter-productive, but made no direct recommendation to drop it.

It did suggest setting up a way to track house building across a range of measures.

Fees-free failure rate one in three A third of tertiary students who took up the Government’s flagship fees-free policy failed or withdrew from at least one of their courses last year, Ministry of Education data shows.

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) did not have details on how much the Government had spent on courses students failed or withdrew from. But based on the 13,770 students who failed to complete at least one course, and the average course cost of $2800 for Student Achievement Component, the figure could be as high as $40 million.

Further information from the TEC showed that fees-free students tended to be younger, more likely to be NZ European, and more engaged in university-level study than non-fees-free students.

The Ministry of Education released the failure and withdrawal numbers after a request under the Official Information Act. The TEC said that the rate of failure or withdrawal from feesfree courses was lower than in 2017, when 37 per cent of a comparable group of students failed or withdrew from a course.

Silence, devastation reign AP The streets are filled with smashed cars, snapped power cables, shattered trees and deep silence.

At the airport and dock, hundreds of people clamour for seats on airplanes and berths on ships arriving with aid and departing with people who lost their homes when deadly Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas.

Nearly a week after disaster roared in from the sea, the rest of Marsh Harbour on Abaco island feels empty. A hot wind whistled through stands of decapitated pine trees and homes that collapsed during the most powerful hurricane in the northwestern Bahamas’ recorded history.

Rescue teams were still trying to reach some Bahamian communities isolated by floodwaters and debris after the disaster that killed at least 43 people. Prime Minister Hubert Minnis says 35 people died on Abaco and eight on Grand Bahama island.

The US Coast Guard said it has rescued a total of 290 people in the northern Bahamas following the hurricane. Six MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and nine cutters are helping in the aid effort.

The United Nations said eight tons of food supplies were on the way by ship. Some 14,700 ready-to-eat meals as well as logistical and telecommunications equipment are being delivered, said Herve Verhoosel, spokesman for the UN World Food Programme.

“The needs remain enormous,” Verhoosel said.

No official figures were available, but much of the population of Marsh Harbour, home to most of the roughly 20,000 residents of Abaco, seemed to

have already left. Many were staying with relatives in the capital, Nassau, others with family in Florida and other parts of the United States.

In Marsh Harbour’s Murphy Town neighbourhood, on a hill overlooking the azure sea, Jackson Blatch and his son-inlaw were already rebuilding.

In a blazing midday sun they stripped damaged shingles from Blatch’s roofs and tossed them into his truck, parked below the eaves of a home he built by hand.

Like a few other Abaco residents, Blatch is staying on an island pulverised by nature.

“Everybody says, ‘Leave.’

Leave and go where?” Blatch asked. “My plan is to rebuild this island. I have a lot to offer.”

Unlike almost every other home on Abaco, Blatch’s house had little damage. He is a builder who prides himself on quality work. When mixing concrete, he never skimps, always precisely blending the recommended amounts of cement, sand and gravel for floors, columns and ceilings.

When he poured his walls and floors, he laced them thick with rebar, constructing a powerful skeleton that resisted the storm.

Instead of using the manufacturer-provided clips on his hurricane shutters, he used long screws on as many as possible to fix the shutters tight to the window frame.

When Dorian hit, it only managed to rip away the shutters with store-bought clips, and a few sections of shingles, leaving some of the Blatch family’s possessions wet but the structure and furnishings intact.

So Blatch has power from a generator, drinking water, food and the help of his son-in-law, 25-year-old Moses Monestine.

Felicity Huffman is getting support from her husband, William H. Macy, and her Desperate Housewives co-star Eva Longoria in her bid to avoid jail time.

The two fellow actors filed letters with a federal court on Friday urging leniency over Huffman’s role in the college admissions scandal. Federal prosecutors are seeking a month in jail. Huffman’s lawyers argued she should get probation, community service and a fine. Macy says their family has struggled since his wife’s arrest. The actress filed her own letter saying she has “a deep and abiding shame.”Sentencing is on September 13.

Floral tribute continues love

Rebecca Parnham of Mt Somers is the brains behind a striking artwork made from the wrappers of flowers laid after the Christchurch terror attack.

The work will be a key piece in the upcoming Tributes of Aroha showcase at Christchurch Art Gallery from September 13 to 15.

It is a three-dimensional piece, comprising the word Unity, covered in 260 handmade flowers.

Parnham is originally from Mt Somers and now lives in Christchurch. She salvaged the wrappers from outside Al Noor

Mosque and the Botanic Gardens after the terror attack on March 15.

“For me, sustainability is really important, and I couldn’t stand the thought of them going to land fill,” Parnham said.

She gathered the layers of plastic sheeting and washed these by hand, and the layers of tissue paper, and put these through her washing machine. She said most of the tissue paper had a plastic base so came through the cycle perfectly.

She looked at Pinterest for ideas and came up with a concept, collaborating with her

Christchurch artist friend Simone Johnstone, who constructed 260 beautiful flowers.

“I was just so lucky, if Simone hadn’t said yes, they would still be sitting in my garage.”

Each of the flowers is completely unique, and it took Johnstone over 200 hours to complete them. Her husband Kris Johnstone, and father-in-law Colin, built the letters for the sign.

The Tributes of Aroha showcase is being held to mark the six-month anniversary since the terror attack and will showcase the outpouring of love, support and solidarity from around the

world in response to the tragedy.

Following the exhibition, the Unity sign will return to Canterbury Museum.

Parnham said it was fantastic to see the work in its entirety upon completion. Its large size, at over five metres long, was a testimony to the sentiment which embraced Canterbury after the attacks.

“The reason it’s so big is it has to communicate the large outpouring of love and support.”

She planned for the work to ultimately be exhibited further afield at various galleries and locations.

Architect welcomes fan’s tears When New Zealand’s greatest architect found a woman weeping in one of his newest buildings recently, it made him happier than anything else he could remember.

“At an entry pillar to the Len Lye Centre, a person was crying, saying, ‘It’s just so beautiful.’ I think that’s the highlight of my career,” said Andrew Patterson, from the minimalist boardroom of his offices in Garfield St, Parnell.

Nothing moves him more than seeing people’s reactions to the structures of his highly awarded Patterson Associates, like the shiny silver New Plymouth art gallery, his homage to Lye’s art and the futuristic-looking yet utilitarian milk vats of area’s dairy industry.

Inform those younger voters!

L

ast week Dunedin mayoral candidate Lee Vandervis got himself in to a bit of hot water at a mayoral forum at Otago University after, in front of a room of young people, saying he does not think they should vote as they are not informed enough.

Saying this in front of a group of young people clearly looking to be informed about the upcoming election was not well received.

While Vandervis probably didn’t get his point across in the right way, he does have a bit of a point.

I am sure if I asked many of my friends who live in Ashburton who they intend on voting for in the upcoming local body elections, their replies would prove Vandervis’ point.

I suspect many would maybe know a couple of mayoral candi-

dates and very possibly councillor candidates.

They might have seen their advertising signage in town, or a targeted ad on Facebook or might know them through a family connection.

And while it is good for them to know who they are, Vandervis’ point still applies, they are not informed voters.

In an ideal world, everyone will fill out their voting form knowing

full well what every candidate stands for and what they want to bring to the table.

However, this is often not the case, and more needs to be done to make these things more known to younger voters.

Government elections are easy because there are fewer people to focus on voting, basically everyone stands for a certain party giving you a base idea of what they stand for, and they often have more time to put in to their campaigns than local body politicians.

However, council elections can be more difficult to keep an interest in, with more candidates and less influence in what happens in your day-to-day life.

While politicians seem to duel daily over certain issues, councils

can seem to run away quietly in the backgrounds, still operating no matter who sits around the table.

Councillors have less say over what happens compared to politicians.

Councils also have the issue of making decisions with the ratepayer in mind compared to the taxpayer in mind.

While just about everyone pays some form of tax, ratepayers are a smaller bunch, and often for younger people, are something they do not have to worry about.

Ted, a 22-year old electrician who flats with four mates has less personal investment if the council decided to erect a 50-foot white elephant statue in the Ashburton Domain compared to Dave and Jill who just bought

their first home and have had their first rates bill popped in to their letterbox.

If that is something Dave and Jill don’t want their rates spent on, they might look for a more sensible spending councillor to vote for, and then they are going to become a more informed voter.

That connection just isn’t there for Ted, and something needs to be done to make it happen.

Whether it starts with more education about local government in school, or encouraging more local government interaction through workplaces employing younger people such as those in trades, it needs to happen.

There is no silver bullet to make younger people informed about elections, but more can definitely be done.

Support until the end I

t might sound a bit morbid, but one of the sad realities of life is that for all of us it will one day end.

When I was younger the prospect of dying terrified me. That we could be happy and alive and conscious of everything around us, and then not.

That regardless of the sort of person we are, or what great deeds we might achieve in life, for all of us the outcome is the same.

For me it eventually manifested itself into a desire to do the best I could for those around me for the time I am here. For none of us life is easy, but I’ve found that to make someone else’s life better is to make my own better.

It’s a motivation we see in so many of our community groups here in Mid Canterbury.

From Rotary, to Lions, to the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild (check out their exhibition on at the Art Gallery – it’s terrific); we have countless organisations that make our district a more fulfilling place to live.

Very few operate in more

challenging circumstances than Hospice Mid Canterbury.

In some locations around the country hospice provides residential facilities, a wonderfully warm and loving environment where palliative care is provided, and families can farewell their loved ones.

Here in the Ashburton district hospice provides counselling and other services to anyone with a life-limiting illness, their families and their caregivers.

It’s not fully funded by Government, and so every year Hospice must fundraise to cover the shortfall for what they provide to our community.

And on Saturday our community responded. Around $35,000 contributed in a single night

It’s a tribute to the work put in by all the volunteers and staff who run hospice, from organising events, to running the shop, and providing the services we so need in Mid Canterbury.

I’m pleased that in recent months Parliament has begun to look at the issue of support for palliative care, but what I find strange is the reason for it.

Two years ago a bill providing for a legal path to euthanasia was first proposed in Parliament

by David Seymour.

It was only at that point opponents to the bill countered that we should instead invest more in end of life care. I don’t see it as a binary choice.

I fully appreciate that many New Zealanders are opposed to euthanasia. Indeed, Hospice New Zealand, the umbrella group for hospices across the country, do not support the legislation.

But I worry about turning it

into an either/or argument. It doesn’t need to be; it can be both. Allowing for euthanasia in no way prevents us from putting more resources into end of life care.

A legal path to euthanasia for the small number of people at the end of their life for whom palliative care does not work, and better resources for the vast bulk of people for whom it does.

None of us know the exact manner in which we will leave this life. We should all feel better knowing we have Hospice Mid Canterbury here in case we should one day need them.

The Presidio was built in 1775, marking the northern frontier of the Spanish empire in the Americas.

There’s a fabulous self-guided walking route around downtown’s essential sights, called the Turquoise Trail.

Get your fill of fabulous Mexican fare from El Charro café. It’s the oldest continuously operated family-owned Mexican restaurant in the USA. This century-old institution specialises in Sonoran-style cuisine, where burritos are known as burros and the tortillas are flour-based, not corn-based.

Try a Chmichanga, a large rectangular burro stuffed with beef, rice, cheese, beans, guacamole and salsa. After you’ve had your city fix, it’s the great outdoors that will be calling, because Tuc-

son’s best perks require straying beyond the city limits. The trail mix of offerings is overwhelming, studded with dramatic natural scenery.

First up, I headed to Tanque Verde Falls in the Rincon Mountains. Looping around the assortment of rock pools, fed by a family of 30-metre waterfalls, the walking trails are soulful, with surprises aplenty.

Naked people. Lots of them.

The area is a haven for nudists, which I wasn’t aware of, until it abruptly became self-explanatory. I opted to keep my clothes on while soaking up this cracking natural playground.

The vast Sonoran Desert straddles both sides of the border and is famed for its big skies and cacti.

But on the periphery of town, Tucson’s crown jewel, Saguaro National Park, is home to the biggest desert cacti of all.

It’s not often you encounter a national park split into two separate swathes of land. But Saguaro National Park is, with sprawling protected parkland, east of the city in the Rincon Mountains and west of the Tucson mountain ranges.

It’s the western park that is particularly riveting, extra-blessed with mountain scenery, rich desert colours and soulful landscapes.

Nights are cool and crisp with stupendous sunsets giving way to black-velvet skies as coyotes howl.

American national parks do have a tendency to pander to lazy people, with self-drive routes. The Bajada Loop Drive is an 11km-long circuit that weaves its way through the west wing of Saguaro National Park, providing spectacular vistas of the cacti forests, along with access to the trailheads.

But saguaro cacti are so majestic, you’d be a mug not to hit the walking tracks for some intimate encounters. The giant saguaro cacti are the world’s biggest cacti.

Native American folkfore says that these towering multi-armed prickly plants were once people.

I set off on one trail that also served up the grandeur of native American petroglyphs. The greatest concentration can be savoured on the Signal Hill trails.

In a bid to beat the crowds, I entered the park at first light.

There wasn’t another soul in sight. It was pinch-yourself special. However, as I was making my way back to my car, and stopping to snap some of these towering cacti up-close, a distinct rattling sound shattered the morning stillness.

The rattling seemed to be growing louder and closer. Yes, it was a rattle snake. A monster of a thing, just off the track. I retreated calmly but quickly. Truth be told, in a hell of a hurry.

The sign at the start of trail warning hikers to stay on the track certainly wasn’t joking! But I’m not sure how the rattlesnakes can be trusted to stay firmly off the track, slithering about in the scrubby bush with that menacing rattle.

Also in the park, I chanced upon my first ever encounter with a kangaroo rat. These fast-footed critters actually live

underground, but will jump out of their burrows regularly – particularly to avoid danger. They can spring remarkably high – like rats doing the high jump.

If you’re after more solitude with succulents in Sonoran Desert surroundings, a brief drive south brings you to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

This protected site also sports the saguaro cactus, but also two other varieties of giant columnar cacti.

The organ pipe differs from the saguaro in that all of its flutelike branches begin at its base, shooting straight up, hence its name.

I also admired the senita cactus. This is the only place they grow in the USA and their prickly limbs are mop-topped with hairy white tufts, giving rise to its nickname, old man’s beard.

The San Xavier del Bac Mission, a national historic landmark, was founded in 1700 by Father Eusebio Kino, a Jesuit explorer who worked to spread Christianity. Completed by the Franciscans in 1797, the historic white stucco church stands on the site Father Kino chose.

At El Charro café make sure you have a Chmichanga, a large rectangular burro stuffed with beef, rice, cheese, beans, guacamole and salsa.

St Augustine Cathedral looks positively Central or South American, unmistakeably flamboyant with its Spanish colonial flourishes.

Currie books World Ironman spot Braden Currie gained not only an emphatic confidence-boost for the upcoming Ironman World Championship in Hawaii next month, but also booked a slot to the 2020 World Ironman 70.3 Championship in Taupo, by winning the Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast yesterday.

The current Asia-Pacific Ironman champion – after defending his 2019 title at Cairns – Currie’s 70.3 success has previously been on home territory, including two Taupo victories and a win in California at Santa Cruz.

That changed yesterday when he stamped his trans-Tasman mark with a debut win over this distance in Australia.

The flying Kiwi never faltered over the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run at Australia’s Mooloolaba-based race, finishing in 3.44.48 hours.

The location was only 30 minutes away from the former Methven athlete’s winter training base in Noosa and the warm weather obviously agreed with him as he clocked a personal best run in an incredibly swift hour and 10 minutes.

“It was a good day and I’m stoked to get the win here. It was a beautiful day for racing and a beautiful course,” Currie said.

He elected not to do the long-haul travel to Nice, France, for the World Ironman 70.3 Championships, which was also held yesterday, concentrating instead on qualifying for Taupo next year and cementing his build-up to Kona, Hawaii.

“My body feels pretty good to be honest.

“The big focus for me is in five weeks’ time in Kona and although I’m

happy to win this race, I won’t be celebrating for too long.

“Training will start back next week with my last build phase towards racing in Hawaii.”

Currie described the swim as “one of the best in the world”, particularly on a day like yesterday which dawned picture-perfect bluebird skies.

The water was a balmy 21.6degC for the wetsuit-optional, one-lap swim and Currie was fourth out of the water 22.32 minutes, only four seconds down on leader Australian Clayton Fettell.

He headed out on the two-lap ride in a pack of seven in cool conditions with an initial tailwind, and at the 20km mark Australian athlete Pete Jacobs lead from Currie, Fettell and another Australian Steven McKenna.

By the halfway point of the bike the wind started to be a factor, and by the 65km mark the bunch of super seven riders remained locked together.

Currie dropped the hammer as he surged towards his first win on the Sunshine Coast, taking over the lead from Fettell as they approached T2 and clocking 2.08 hours for the bike stage.

For the first 7km of the run Currie was locked in duel with McKenna, before stretching out a 20m lead at the halfway point as the Kiwi enjoyed the Mooloolaba atmosphere and the locals urging him on over the Alexandra Headland.

“First lap over the hill things were all pretty tight and I was nervous there for a bit. I knew that if I had Ironman legs and kept strong maybe the other boys would crack and they did and I Braden Currie took out yesterday’s Ironman 70.3 race on Australia’s Sunshine Coast. got to enjoy it,” Currie said.

Andreescu stuns Williams in US Open final AP Bianca Andreescu knew this would happen, because she knows all about Serena Williams.

Looked up to her. Dreamed of playing her.

Andreescu knew Williams would not go quietly. Knew Williams would not make things easy.

And so as a big lead in the US Open final dwindled yesterday, as she stuffed fingers in her ears to drown out the decibels from the delirious thousands filling Arthur Ashe Stadium, Andreescu knew she needed to be just as bold, and hit just as big, as she did earlier in the match – and as Williams has done for years.

and pulled out a 6-3, 7-5 victory at Flushing Meadows to win her first Grand Slam title and keep Williams from collecting a record-tying 24th.

“I’m sure I’m not the only person that’s looked up to her.

“She’s an inspiration to many, many people, not only athletes. What she’s done off the court, too. She’s truly a champion.

“Above all, she’s very kind-hearted. She came up to me in the locker room, she said some really nice things, which I’ll cherish for a really, really long time,” Andreescu said about the 37-year-old Williams.

“I’ve really strived to be like her,” Andreescu said. “Who knows? Maybe I can be even better.”

That’s quite a heady goal.

Still, this was certainly a good place to start.

Andreescu is the first woman in the Open era, which began in 1968, to win the

championship in New York in her tournament debut; a year ago, she couldn’t even make it into the field, because she lost in the first round of qualifying.

She is the first player from Canada to win a Grand Slam singles title.

This is the second year in a row that Williams has lost in the final at Flushing Meadows. This one had none of the controversy of 2018, when she got into an extended argument with the chair umpire.

Williams has now been the runner-up at four of the seven majors she has entered since returning to the tour after having a baby.

She remains stuck on 23 Grand Slam singles titles, one shy of Margaret Court’s mark for the most in history.

Williams gave credit to Andreescu for playing well, but also said: “I honestly didn’t play my best today. I could have played better. That’s the only solace that I can take right now.”

Clever? Or arrogant?

NZME Were the All Blacks arrogant to purposefully play the last 15 minutes of their 92-7 win over Tonga with only 14 men?

That’s the question being asked

by Fox Sports Australia after All Blacks coach Steve Hansen admitted that he deliberately forced his men to finish the game with 14 players in the final 15 minutes in order to put more pressure on them.

Clearly mindful not to offend Tonga with his comments, Hansen said Ryan Crotty was scheduled to play only 65 minutes on his return to the top level from a broken thumb and that while he could have contrived to have Aaron Smith play on the wing at the end, he was comfortable with a numerical disadvantage.

“Obviously his [Crotty’s] welfare was more important and it was a good opportunity again to put ourselves under a bit of pressure when it comes to how many we have on the park.

“We had to make that choice and the score told us we could make that choice with relatively low risk.”

But in their report on the All Blacks’ win, Fox Sports asked the question which was on the minds of some after the match – were the All Blacks “Arrogant or just plain smart?”

Irish website The 42 said that the All Blacks’ “Rugby World Cup dress rehearsal was more like a training session as the defending champions demolished Tonga 92-7 in an ominous warning”, while Dylan Jack of the SA Rugby Mag wondered how much was gained by the thrashing.

“It is hard to judge what, aside from a massive confidence boost, the New Zealanders really gained from the match as it is unlikely

that they will come up against as porous defences as the Tongans’ in Hamilton.

In fact, the scoreline was so flattering that the All Blacks took centre Ryan Crotty off in the second half and did not replace him, deliberately playing with 14 men when the game was already won.”

Meanwhile, scoring four tries is a heck of a way to make a statement.

Now left wing George Bridge, one of the stars against Tonga, must be close to starting against the Springboks in his team’s first game of the World Cup. Assuming Beauden Barrett reverts to fullback to allow Richie Mo’unga to return to first fiveeighth, the right wing for the match in Yokohama in just under a fortnight will also be of interest.

Do Steve Hansen and company roll the dice on Sevu Reece, or will they prefer the reliability of Ben Smith, who looked sharper and more confident on his return amidst the greater space the Tongans provided?

While Reece appears to be a wildcard element capable of turning a match with a piece of brilliance, his Crusaders teammate Bridge is emerging as a relentlessly consistent finisher who is, crucially, in excellent form.

The selectors may now feel they can’t do without him on the field at the start of a big match.

The same, unfortunately for Rieko Ioane, cannot be said of the

Blues left wing who missed his opportunity to respond in Hamilton due to a tight calf.

Bridge scored three of his four tries in the second half, and had his fourth inside 57 minutes.

Marc Ellis’s record of six tries scored against Japan in the 1995 World Cup was there for the taking but the 24-year-old said there were no thoughts of matching it or going one better.

“I didn’t know that to be honest,” he said.

“I wasn’t thinking about that – not at all.”

What Bridge was thinking about during the demolition of Tonga in the afternoon sun was a ruthless adherence to the basics, something he and his teammates did extremely well given what is just around the corner.

“There was a massive emphasis on the big boys fronting up and trying to win that physical battle,” Bridge said.

“From there I think our skillset was really well executed and so there was space out wide for me.

“It turned out all right.”

For Josh Ioane, on the field in a test for the first time after sitting on the reserves bench in his first against Argentina, playing the entirety of the second half and starting with a try assist was a dream come true.

“It was fast and physical,” he said.

“The boys didn’t go light on me, there were a few tackles that got me good. I enjoyed it.”

Canterbury have finally moved off the bottom of the Premiership ladder in the Mitre 10 Cup, thanks to a 32-22 victory over Auckland in a re-match of last year’s final. Having their worst start to a season in decades, Canterbury promptly put 80 unanswered points on a woeful Southland side last week to snap that streak. However, Auckland provided a much tougher challenge, having come into the week second on the table, but Canterbury showed they are back on track, claiming a bonus point victory, including a try to Dallas McLeod.

Ireland top of the table World Rugby’s rankings system is a nonsense. Everyone knows that. Ireland lost 57-15 at Twickenham two weeks ago to cap a dreadful 2019, after which they were widely written off as a team past their sell-by date.

They know they are not the best team in the world. Their fans know.

Wallabies pip Samoa Australia survived a second half comeback attempt by Samoa to beat the South Pacific Islanders 34-15 in the teams’ final test match before the Rugby World Cup. The Wallabies led 22-3 at halftime before Dwayne Polataivao scored two second half tries to bring the visitors within seven points with less than 20 minutes to play.

But Dane Haylett-Petty and Matt To’omua — after the siren — scored late tries to give Australia the edge.

Late try denies Hammers

As Mid Canterbury’s team bus wound its way back across the Southern Alps on Saturday night, it was hard not to think of the what ifs.

They’d just come agonisingly close to beating the top team in rugby’s Heartland Championship, the West Coast, in Greymouth.

The visitors had led for almost the entire match, but let in a try in the 87th minute which sealed the home side a dramatic comefrom-behind 43-41 victory.

It hurt, but Mid Canterbury coach Dale Palmer and his players knew they’d made their own bed.

Palmer said his side played really well in the first half, but were let down by too many turnovers and their own discipline in the second half.

“Just a few wee mistakes ... our kick receipts and a few bits and pieces, and turnovers, we just let them have too much ball,” Palmer said.

Mid Canterbury had done their research going into the game.

They knew who the Coast’s big ball runners were and successfully shut them down in the first half, and they also knew the West Coast had a strong forward pack, and it was a forward pack that dominated the second half.

West Coast kept it tight, and Mid Canterbury simply didn’t contain it well enough, Palmer said.

The day had started so well.

Mid Canterbury had the better of the first half, with tries to Seta Koroitamana, Matt McAtamney,

Manasa Bari and a 60-metre intercept effort to Jackson Donlan to finish off the first 40.

That gave Mid Canterbury a 3114 lead at the break, but the West Coast started clawing their way back in, as they had in their first two wins which had put them at the top of the standings.

Second tries to Koroitamana and Bari ensured Mid Canterbury kept their noses in front, but as the seconds ticked away, the home side started piling the pressure on.

Eventually the pressure and the two-man advantage told and West Coast’s winning try came courtesy of Amenatave Tukana, after 86 entertaining minutes of rugby.

“We got ourselves into that situation and the guys did defend well, and that’s why it went for so long, but we just shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place,” Palmer said.

While it may have been a captivating game for spectators, it wasn’t so great when you were the

coach of the losing side.

“It wasn’t a great spectator game for us watching and trying to manage it, but the guys played really good rugby in the first half, we just gave them too much ball in the second half,” Palmer said.

“It was one of those games where you felt your heart was in your mouth a fair bit, it was pretty intense.”

Adding to the drama of the second half was an injury to Mid Canterbury’s replacement loose forward Angus Lindsay. He popped a shoulder and was taken off to hospital, meaning he is now likely to be out for the next few weeks.

That wasn’t great news as Mid Canterbury looks ahead to a few weeks where they simply had to win.

Mid Canterbury have won just one game from the first three rounds and are sitting seventh on the Heartland Championship points table, with a third placed South Canterbury side their opposition in round four.

Palmer said Mid Canterbury are still building and yet to put a complete performance together, and needed to start delivering more on the promise they’d shown, and start climbing their way back up the ladder.

Three rounds in, just two teams are unbeaten.

One of those teams is the West Coast and the other is North Otago, after they picked up a narrow 34-30 win over Poverty Bay on Saturday.

South Canterbury and Thames Valley are next on the table after picking up the biggest wins of round three. South Canterbury ran away with the win 57-7 over Horowhenua-Kapiti, while Thames Valley handed East Coast their third loss on the trot, 43-15.

The most surprising team this season, though, continued to be Wanganui, with the traditionally strong side also falling to their third loss of the competition, 2221 to Buller on Saturday, meaning they are the surprise team languishing down the bottom with East Coast. The weekend’s other game saw Wairarapa Bush claim a 37-31 win over King Country.

Exceeding expectations

Ashburton College’s netballers headed to the South Island secondary school championships with their eyes set on finishing in the top half of the draw.

But they did far better than a top 16 finish, instead coming home from Nelson with a fourth placing, three players in the tournament’s talented players group, and a spot at nationals booked.

Just what they’d achieved was still sinking in for the talented young school side, but coach Kaye Kennedy said they were absolutely over the moon.

The team headed to the tournament in Nelson just a week after winning the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one grade final against Celtic A, full of self belief but at the same time knowing that they’d be up against it.

“We did talk about creating history and before we went away we talked a lot about the legacy of Ashburton College, and we are part of that legacy now, so it was exciting considering that our goal was top 14 – we well and truly exceeded that,” Kennedy said.

The result was even better when you considered that in this season’s weekly Canterbury secondary schools’ SuperNet competition Ashburton College finished eighth, and the fact that last year they came 15th at South Islands.

“You just never know at South Islands, because every year the teams change when they lose Year 13s and they get new players in, but if you win those first two games on that first day it sets you up pretty well,” Kennedy said.

“So we did that, but neither of the games were easy, and then it was just a matter of keeping on winning.”

Up until the last day, they did just that, but no game was smooth sailing.

“We were down in a couple of games but the girls just managed to keep things together when we were down.

“They just really fought back and we just talked about grinding it out, and they did.”

Ashburton College was the

only team to have three players named in the tournament’s 20-strong talented players’ group – Hayley Tallentire, Mia Pearson and Samantha Holden – while two Mid Canterbury umpires, Lydia Wilson and Willow Diedricks, both made the talented umpires group.

Tallentire, Ashburton College’s goal-shoot, had an incredible tournament particularly on the days where they played outside in the rain, Kennedy said.

There was only one game during the week where she shot under 80 per cent, and in two games she shot at 94 per cent.

Meanwhile, down the other end of the court, Pearson and Holden formed a formidable defensive duo and Kennedy said they were simply outstanding all week.

Ashburton College’s outstanding run came to an end in the semi-finals at the hands of Christchurch Girls’ High School (CGHS) 34-21, and then lost the third play-off to Villa Maria 3930.

“We just ran out of oomph a bit on that last day, particularly against Christchurch Girls’ High School, outside in the pouring rain.

“They had a really strong midcourt and we had tired legs and we just stopped doing lots of the early preparation work off the ball,” Kennedy said.

“But it was never a thought that we actually couldn’t do it.”

And they’d now take that self belief back to Nelson next month, where this time it’d be a national crown on the line.

The national secondary schools’ championships will be held in Nelson from October 8-10, and will involve the top five teams from the South Island tournament – CGHS, Villa Maria, Ashburton College and fifth placed St Margarets from Canterbury, and Dunedin’s St Hilda’s.

Ashburton College last played at the nationals in 2017 after a team pulled out and they were called up as the next best finishers, and before that they’d last qualified in 2002, 2001, 1999, 1995 and 1993.

Their best finish from those years was a sixth place finish in 1999.

A massive sporting week for schools wraps up Ashburton College’s senior basketball teams both finished their respective Schick Premiership AA secondary schools’ zone four tournaments on a high on Saturday.

The Ashburton College senior A girls won their final game of the tournament in Nelson against Papanui High School 68-43 to finish 13th overall, having beaten

St Margarets College 61-57 to go through to the 13th spot play-off.

The boys meanwhile played off for 15th spot against Timaru Boys’ High School and came out on top 88-73.

Earlier in the ninth to 16th spot play-offs they’d lost narrowly to Christchurch Boys’ High School on Friday 79-76, before going down 98-65 to St Thomas of

Canterbury College on Saturday morning.

The basketball tournaments were the last of the 2019 secondary schools’ tournament week involving Ashburton College sides to wrap up.

Most of the secondary school hockey tournaments around the country finished up on Friday, with Ashburton College’s girls’

first XI finishing fifth in the Jenny McDonald Cup tournament in Cromwell, beating Tairi College 1-0 in the fifth place play-off.

Ashburton College’s boys’ first XI also won their last game, beating Waimea College in the playoff for ninth spot at the Johnson Cup tournament in Invercargill, while their second XI finished sixth in the Coaches Cup tourna-

ment on home turf in Ashburton.

They lost their fifth place playoff against St Peters College from Gore 4-0, while a penalty shootout was needed to decide the tournament’s final after Nayland College and Lincoln High School were all even at 2-all at full time.

Lincoln went on to win the shoot out 4-3 to claim the Coaches Cup.

Southern raid kicks off NZME A gritty win by promising filly Woodcote Lass at Riccarton on Saturday has started Matamata trainer Stephen Autridge’s southern campaign in the best possible style.

Autridge has based a fivestrong team at Riccarton for the past few weeks as they get ready to tackle some of the feature events at November’s New Zealand Cup & Show Week for owner Kevin Hickman.

Autridge’s contingent is spearheaded by Gr.1 Gavelhouse. com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) nominees Woodcote Lass and Last Hoorah, while he also has three mares bought

by Hickman in England in Red Chois, Blue Valley and Unbeatable Dancer on hand.

Woodcote Lass and Last Hoorah clashed in Saturday’s NZ Bloodstock Three-Year-Old (1000m) contest with Woodcote Lass prevailing in a stirring battle with Miss Federer while Last Hoorah closed off nicely to finish eighth in her raceday debut.

“I was pleased with both runs as they went as we had expected,” Autridge said.

“Woodcote Lass is just a real little professional and is always up for a fight.

“She is very relaxed in her manner at home but she is tough and seems to thrive when she is in a scrap.

“Last Hoorah is more of a staying filly that won’t be at her best until she steps up to 1400m and further.

“She got home nicely so it was a good debut effort.”

suggests to me that she will see out 1600m.

“We have talked to her race and trackwork riders and they are of the same opinion.

“She will go to the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) next and then we will step her up in distance after that as we track towards the Guineas.”

Meanwhile Autridge’s threeyear-old classic contender Kurt has hit a snag in his build-up to a possible tilt at the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) following a lacklustre performance at Hastings last week.

“I wasn’t that happy with his run at Hastings on the first day of their carnival as he seemed to be in a little discomfort when he pulled up,” Autridge said.

“He got twisted sideways early in the race and never really hitout in the race after that, so we are taking him to the vet clinic on Monday for a thorough going over.

“If there is something troubling him, they should be able to find it and we can then make plans from there.

“Hopefully it is just a niggle and we can keep him on a Guineas path.”

Trainer Graeme Rogerson is looking forward to the second day of the Bostock New Zealand Spring Racing Carnival at Hastings later this month despite the unfortunate loss of five-year-old Comeback.

The Makfi gelding was humanely euthanised following his gritty run in the Tarzino Trophy after sustaining a slab fracture in the closing stages of the contest. “He was very brave and it’s such a shame we couldn’t save him,” Rogerson said.

“I guess that is racing, where you have to take the good with the bad, but it is a tough old game.

He was a genuine and much-loved horse.”

NZME New Zealand motocross rider Courtney Duncan has fulfilled her childhood dream of being crowned world champion.

Her eighth race victory of the 2019 Women’s Motocross World Championship has sealed her maiden world title with a race in hand.

Duncan took out the penultimate race of the season at the GP of Turkey by a huge 12.818 seconds – to give her an unassailable championship lead.

Duncan, of Otago, has been utterly dominant in 2019, winning all but one of the nine races.

An emotional Duncan fought back tears as she returned to the pit are to be greeted by her team and family.

“What a day. What a day.

“It’s indescribable right now. There were some big emotions after the race,” Duncan said.

“So much gets built into this.

“This goes way back to when I started when I was 7-years of age.

“Everything goes into this.

“So much effort from my family – they did so much for me growing up to Courtney Duncan get me to this point.

“All my team, my sponsors everyone back over home. I have a huge team at home, and everyone plays a huge part in this championship.

“It was definitely a team effort. I can’t thank everyone enough,” Duncan said.

The 23-year-old has been the fastest rider in the world championship since bursting onto the scene in 2016 but has endured three years of misfortune and injury that has prevented her claiming a championship.

Duncan becomes the first New Zealand woman to hold a world motocross title since Katherine Oberlin-Brown (nee Prumm) won the Women’s World Cup in 2006 and 2007. The class was elevated to FIM World Motocross Championship status in 2008.

A day all about spreading love for tennis attracted a big crowd to the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre at the weekend.

Everyone from kids swinging a tennis racket for the first time, to adults signing up for tennis lessons, as well as some of the best juniors in the country, were among those who took to the courts on Saturday for day one of a nationwide Love Tennis open weekend.

As well as having a go themselves, those who were there on Saturday also got the opportunity to witness some top tennis talent in action, with top junior Diego Quispe-Kim making the first of what will be many visits to Ash-

burton over the coming months.

The 14-year-old national under-14 champion who also won a recent Rod Laver Tournament in Australia, has signed up to play his Saturday afternoon interclub tennis in Mid Canterbury this year.

Mid Canterbury Tennis junior convener Peter Leonard played a big role in bringing the Irwell-based player to the district.

He was part of Leonard’s Canterbury Country division one team that played in the Canter-

bury competition on Sundays last season, along with Mid Canterbury players Rhys Cromie and Cameron McCracken.

Leonard said it was a huge thrill to have a player of Quispe-Kim’s calibre playing in Mid Canterbury this season.

But, it was just as exciting to see the number of new players turning out at the open weekend.

“It was great to see so many new people wanting to come along and have a look,” Leonard said.

“There was a lady there who was nearly my age and she turned up for the first time and signed up for some lessons.”

While the weather probably kept some people away yesterday, who otherwise might have gone along for a hit, the open weekend was still being hailed a big success and the countdown was now on to the tennis season starting.

The Mid Canterbury Tennis interclub season will get under way on October 12.
