Ashburton Police are on the trail of a man who armed himself with a tyre iron, entered the Discounter Dairy and demanded money from staff on Saturday morning. The slim, fair-haired man in his twenties has become the second person to threaten staff at the Alford Forest Road store in six months, and police are seeking the public’s help to identify him. culprit walking towards the dairy from Andrew Street at around 9.30am and pulling a dark balaclava over his head as he approached the shops. He walked into the dairy and demanded money from the staff member behind the counter while holding up the tyre iron. Police said his attempt was unsuccessful and he fled the store. He was last seen running north on Clark Street, then down the alleyway between Clark Street and Allens Road.
The man is described as a 20- to 25-year-old European. Police advised that he is about 175cm tall, with a slim build and blond hair, cut short back and sides. At the time of the incident he was clean shaven, wearing a dark blue longsleeve sweatshirt, a white shirt, lightercoloured skinny pants, and flat-soled shoes.
