Ashburton Police are on the trail of a man who armed himself with a tyre iron, entered the Discounter Dairy and demanded money from staff on Saturday morning.

The slim, fair-haired man in his twenties has become the second person to threaten staff at the Alford Forest Road store in six months, and police are seeking the public’s help to identify him.

culprit walking towards the dairy from Andrew Street at around 9.30am and pulling a dark balaclava over his head as he approached the shops.

He walked into the dairy and demanded money from the staff member behind the counter while holding up the tyre iron.

Police said his attempt was unsuccessful and he fled the store. He was last seen running north on Clark Street, then down the alleyway between Clark Street and Allens Road.

The man is described as a 20- to 25-year-old European. Police advised that he is about 175cm tall, with a slim build and blond hair, cut short back and sides. At the time of the incident he was clean shaven, wearing a dark blue longsleeve sweatshirt, a white shirt, lightercoloured skinny pants, and flat-soled shoes.

Rain to turn around dry spell

Mid Canterbury is in line for some welcome rain this week, however it will be delivered with plummeting temperatures and possible snow to 400 metres.

A southerly is on the way, set to turn around dry conditions this October.

Just 1.8 millimetres of rain has fallen so far this month, compared to the long-term average of 13 millimetres.

The lack of precipitation has extended a dry spell since June, following high rainfall in the first half of the year.

“Rain will be welcome, not just for farmers, but for gardeners as well,” said Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers chairman Michael Salvesen.

Salvesen said moisture would help early growth of crops, and establishment of winter feed as planting was under way.

The downside would be for high country farms where lambing was under way, and farmers there would be keeping an eye on the weather and their stock.

Snow may fall as low as 500 metres on Wednesday and 400 metres on Thursday and Friday.

MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes said the southerly would be a big contrast to warm temperatures today and early tomorrow.

“It won’t be as cold as we get in winter, but that contrast is always pretty noticeable,” he said.

Significant rainfall accumulations were expected for the western and eastern coasts of the South Island along with the upper North Island, and snow

was forecast to low levels for inland South Island and the Central Plateau.

A number of Severe Weather Warnings and Severe Weather Watches were expected to be put in place in the coming days.

“A weather system such as this has the potential to be quite disruptive,” McInnes warned.

“And with the school holidays drawing to a close, it is very important to stay up-to-date with the latest information.”

In Ashburton, temperatures are forecast to reach a maximum of 19 degrees today and 18 tomorrow, but just 10 on Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, NIWA data for Ashburton shows September was a near average month in terms of rainfall but it was cooler than normal due to prevailing south-easterly winds.

There was 42.6 millimetres of rain, which is 88 per cent of the long-term average, and a mean temperature of 8.4° celsius, which was 1.4° celsius below the long-term September average, which is well below normal.

The mean maximum, or average daily high, for the month was 14.4°C, which is 1.1°C below the long-term September average, considered below normal. The mean minimum, or average daily low, was 2.5°C, which is 1.6°C below the longterm September average, or well below normal.

NIWA is forecasting near normal to below normal rainfall through to December in Mid Canterbury. The probability for El Niño is high until autumn 2019, however, it is not expected to be at a level of intensity for drought to occur.

Outdoors good for mental health

Mid Cantabrians are embracing Mental Health Awareness Week which kicked off yesterday.

Eleven people participated in a free outdoor exercise class at Baring Square West, while many EA Networks Centre visitors have been posting positive messages on an Inspiration Wall at the centre.

The Mental Health Foundation initiative is supported by the Ashburton District Council, which organised the body balance and stretch class led by EA Networks Centre staff.

Gym supervisor Anna Johnson said the outdoor location helped bring an element of nature to the class, tying in with the week’s theme of Let Nature In, Strengthen Your Wellbeing.

Johnson talked about sharing not only the good moments in one’s life, but also making it more natural to talk about the bad.

“We all have those moments, but we are often brought up to speak about only the good,” she said.

Council people and capability manager Sarah Mosley said yesterday’s lunchtime class gave an opportunity to reflect on how physical activity can contribute to positive mental health.

In addition, the council installed an Inspiration Wall at EA Networks Centre on Friday, and many messages have already gone up. Visitors will be able to contribute to the wall throughout the week.

Staff in the council administration building, EA Networks Centre, library and museum will be donning lime-coloured T-shirts throughout the week.

“As a community, we all need to work together in looking out for one another, supporting our friends and family, and breaking the stigma that still unfortunately often surrounds mental health,” Mosley said.

Mental Health Foundation chief executive Shaun Robinson said a record number of people had registered for updates about the week.

Activities around the country include a nationwide Wellbeing Photo Challenge and forest bathing in the Port Hills.

“Research shows spending time in nature makes us feel good, decreases feelings of depression and anxiety, improves concentration, buffers against stress, makes lives meaningful, speeds recovery from tough times and reduces health inequalities related to poverty,” Robinson said.

Husband faces unrelated charges

Police have made one arrest as they investigate the death of a woman in Methven on the weekend.

The woman’s husband is facing charges and will appear in the Christchurch District Court, NZME have reported – but the charges are not related to her death.

The woman in her thirties died near Our Lady of the Snows Parish. Emergency services were first called to the scene at 9.30am on Saturday and 12 hours later police released a statement describing the woman’s death as “unexplained”.

NZME advised that the woman’s husband failed to appear in the Christchurch District Court yesterday and was granted a registrar’s remand until October 30.

He is facing two charges – possession of a needle or syringe and assaulting police.

He has not been charged in relation to his wife’s death.

Police have so far refused to comment further on the circumstances surrounding the death, or if any other charges will be laid in the near future.

A spokeswoman declined to answer any questions from the Ashburton Guardian yesterday, advising there was no update to provide.

There have been more than 10 recorded and burglaries and aggravated robberies at the store since 2012.

These included an incident in April this year where a man pointed a long-barrelled firearm directly at the woman behind the

counter and made off with a sum of cash. Another man was jailed for two years and two months in May after threatening a shop worker at the Discounter Dairy with a large knife in 2016 and taking a $42.50 packet of tobacco.

Enhancing the landscape around Lake Camp

Port worker killed A worker has died after being crushed in a workplace incident at Gisborne’s port yesterday.

Emergency services were called to Eastland Port on Rakaiatane Road about 9am. Detective Nick Wilkie said the port worker was on the wharf and had been killed by a falling log. WorkSafe had been notified and the death would be referred to the coroner, he said.

Eastland Port said it could not comment.

It was a milestone moment as schoolchildren, families and council staff set to work planting around Lake Camp on Friday.

The Ashburton District Council open spaces team and Lake Clearwater Hutholders’ Association organised a planting day to kick off the implementation of the council’s Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater Landscape Management Plan.

Students and teachers from Mt Somers Springburn School collected some of the original seeds from plants in the area, while ADC staff spread the seed.

A total of 580 native plants have been added to the area.

Council open spaces planner Bert Hofman said the day attracted a good turnout, with the council joined by 16 volunteers.

Drummond Etheridge Ashburton provided free use of their tractors for the day.

Hofman said future work will include improvements to vehicle tracks around the lake, new signage and further plantings.

Community work Assault admitted for dishonesty A farm worker who sold a car on Facebook for $850 but failed to deliver it was sentenced to 50 hours community work and ordered to pay the money back when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Hayden Johnston, 20, had admitted a charge of dishonestly obtaining money by a bank transfer.

Johnston advertised a Mazda car for sale in January and sold it for $850. He agreed to drive it to the West Coast after the buyer put the money into his bank account.

The money was paid, but the vehicle never delivered. Johnston also gave the complainant a fake address in Christch-

urch’s red zone. Judge Joanna Maze said Johnston had not helped his case by not co-operating with probation officers who needed to interview him for a pre-sentence report, which would have covered community-based sentences.

He had put himself at risk of a short spell in jail.

But she acknowledged Johnston now had a job working on a dairy farm at Culverden. She told him he had to prioritise the community work or he would be back in front of her for breaching the sentence.

“You would be foolish if you don’t do it. You will never get a deal like that again Mr Johnston, so make the most if it.”

A Rakaia man had to escape through his bedroom window to avoid being beaten by Troy Scott McEvedy, the Ashburton District Court was told yesterday.

McEvedy, 39, had admitted a charge of assault with intent to injure.

Crown prosecutor Helen Bennett said McEvedy went to a Rakaia address about 9.30pm on November 24 last year, where he told the victim he was going to “give him hiding”.

When the victim tried to call 111, McEvedy put him in a headlock and punched him in the head repeatedly.

The victim eventually broke free and barricaded himself in his bedroom. McEvedy tried to force the door open and “smash” him.

The victim then crawled out through his bedroom window and went to neighbours, who called police.

Judge Joanna Maze said McEvedy had an extensive history of violent offending and remanded him ona bail for sentencing on December 17, with reports considering the suitability of electronically monitored sentences.

She also referred the case for restorative justice.

The Topp Twins are officially Dame Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit for more than 30 years of services to entertainment.

Coach a lifesaver An umpire who performed CPR on an Auckland teen who collapsed during his first game of the season is being hailed a lifesaver. Oliver “Ollie” Tainui, 17, went into cardiac arrest during his team’s game at Papakura’s Prince Edward Park on Saturday. Ollie’s mum Lea Tainui knew something was wrong when her son just stood still as the ball hurtled towards him, Stuff reported.

“Nobody knew what was going on,” Tainui told Stuff. Ollie, a student at Wesley College, was recovering at Middlemore Hospital and tests were being carried out on him to determine the cause.

But a man has climbed up the thin structure, bending it and eventually breaking it. A council spokeswoman says the spike hit the man in the head and he was lucky to miss the rocks beneath him when he fell.

‘Consumers are being fleeced’ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has launched a scathing attack on fuel companies, telling reporters she thinks “consumers are being fleeced” at the petrol pump.

“I am hugely disappointed in the level of price that consumers are currently paying at the pump for fuel,” she said at her weekly post-cabinet press conference yesterday.

National Leader Simon Bridges has been critical of the Government and its fuel taxes which he said is pushing the price of petrol up.

“Unlike petrol, talk is cheap.

And the Government is a big part of the reason why petrol prices are so high.”

Petrol prices are creeping up to $2.50 in some parts of the county.

Ardern came out swinging, pointing the finger at fuel importers – such as Z Energy, BP, Mobil and Gull – and their margins.

“Between 2008 and 2017, the margins importers were taking for themselves more than doubled from 7 per cent to 16 per cent.

“That increase represents a transfer of wealth from petrol consumers to producers, to the tune of hundreds of millions of

Between October 2017 and September this year, petrol prices have risen 39c – Ardern said just 6.8c of this was tax.

But 9.8c of that was down to the margin from importers, she said.

Given the concerns about “anti-competitive behaviour” in the fuel market, the Government has prioritised the passing of the Commerce Amendment Bill.

This bill would amend the Commerce Act to enable the Commission to undertake market studies.

Once passed, Energy Minister Woods has signalled that she intends to ask the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Kris Faafoi to request the commission to conduct a market study into fuel markets to better understand how the market is functioning.

“I will nominate the fuel markets as a priority area,” Ardern said.

Ardern is anticipating the bill to be passed in two weeks’ time.

The study will report back next year, and the Government will prioritise a response to what the Commerce Commission finds.

In the past, some petrol companies have not played ball with the Government when asked about their margins.

full market co-operation,” Ardern said.

“They haven’t opened up their books to us in the past; so we’re going to have to force their hand.”

Bridges said the Government should axe its fuel tax increases to provide immediate relief to motorists. “[Ardern] is saying consumers are being ‘fleeced’ while her Government is driving up fuel prices and taking hundreds of dollars from Kiwi households through higher taxes on fuel.

“The [Commerce Commission] inquiry will take months and any resulting changes could be years away.

“Meanwhile New Zealanders are paying record prices for petrol and the Government is collecting hundreds of millions of extra tax [dollars] from them.”

But Ardern said the Government’s excise tax has been just a “small part” of the petrol price increase.

“Even if we did remove [the excise taxes] I cannot guarantee that fuel companies would not simply absorb that themselves and consumers would pay the same price.”

Four sisters killed A limousine carrying four sisters, other relatives and friends to a birthday celebration blew through a stop sign and slammed into a parked SUV outside a store in upstate New York, killing all 18 people in the limo and two pedestrians, officials and victims’ relatives said.

The weekend crash was characterised by authorities as the deadliest US transportation accident in nearly a decade.

The crash turned a relaxed Saturday afternoon to horror at a rural spot popular with tourists viewing the region’s fall foliage.

Relatives said the limousine was carrying the sisters and their friends to a 30th birthday celebration for the youngest.

“They were wonderful girls,” said their aunt, Barbara Douglas, speaking with reporters at the scene.

“They’d do anything for you and they were very close to each other and they loved their family.”

Douglas said three of the sisters were with their husbands, and she identified them as Amy and Axel Steenburg, Abigail and Adam Jackson, Mary and Rob Dyson and Allison King.

“They did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn’t have to drive anywhere,” she said, adding the couples had several children between them who they left at home.

The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine was travelling southwest on Route 30 in Schoharie, about 270km north of New York City, when it failed to stop at a T-junction with state Route 30A, State Police First Deputy Superintendent Christopher Fiore said at a news conference in Latham, New York.

It went across the road and hit an unoccupied SUV parked at the Apple Barrel Country Store, killing the limousine driver, the 17 passengers, and two people outside the vehicle.

The crash “sounded like an explosion,” said Linda Riley, of nearby Schenectady, who was on a shopping trip with her sisters.

The store manager, Jessica Kirby, told The New York Times the limo was coming down a hill at “probably over 60mph.”

In an email to The Associated Press, she complained that the junction where the crash occurred is accident-prone.

“We have had three tractor trailer type trucks run through the stop through our driveway and into a field behind the business,” Kirby wrote.

“All of these occurred during business hours and could’ve killed someone then.”

She added that the state Department of Transportation has banned heavy trucks from the intersection but there are constant smaller crashes.

“More accidents than I can count.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

“This is one of the biggest losses of life that we’ve seen in a long, long time,” NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said.

It’s the deadliest transportation accident since February 2009, when Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed near Buffalo, New York, killing 50 people, Sumwalt said.

And it appears to be the deadliest land-vehicle accident since a bus ferrying nursing home patients away from Hurricane Rita caught fire in Texas 2005, killing 23.

At the news conference, Fiore didn’t comment on the limo’s speed, or whether the limo occupants were wearing seat belts. Authorities didn’t release the names of the victims or speculate on what caused the limo to run the stop sign. Autopsies were being conducted.

Speaking through tears on the telephone, Valerie Abe-

ling said her 34-year-old niece Erin Vertucci was among the victims, along with Vertucci’s newlywed husband, 30-yearold Shane McGowan.

“She was a beautiful, sweet soul; he was too,” Abeling said.

The couple was married in June at a “beautiful wedding” in upstate New York, Abeling said. “They had everything going for them.”

The vehicle was an aftermarket stretch limousine, according to an official briefed on the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Safety issues on such vehicles have arisen before, most notably after a wreck on Long Island in July 2015 in which four women on a winery tour were killed. They were in a Lincoln Town Car that had been cut apart and rebuilt in a stretch configuration to accommodate more passengers.

Started nine years ago, Ngā Rangatahi Toa uses social justice and arts-based-programmes to connect with young people excluded from school and encourage them to stay in school or vocational training. Minchin, the awardwinning musician, comedian, actor and composer who wrote Matilda the Musical, chose NRT as the charity which will receive money from sales of tickets to Auckland concerts in April.

NZDF continues to evacuate quake survivors The New Zealand Defence Force has delivered more than 18 tonnes of aid supplies to the quake-ravaged Indonesian city of Palu, and is continuing to help evacuate survivors.

Cricket scene needs resuscitating N

ews yesterday of the demise of the Allenton senior cricket team from the longer format competitions this season will strike right at the very heart strings of many of Mid Canterbury’s most earnest cricketing followers.

Allenton have long been one of the toughest teams to compete against with some of the most notable local names featuring on the scoreboards each week – but this year they won’t be there, and the loss of their presence is a really concerning one for the future of senior cricket locally.

It might be time to put pride to one side for a moment and take a good serious look at how cricket

is going at a senior level here in Mid Canterbury. What was once a rich and prosperous scene is now fading into an almost nothingness.

Gone are the days where we had these incredible feeder competitions like second grade which provided a great stepping stone for younger players before they stepped up to the big time

to take on the men in the senior competition.

When the two competitions combined, there was renewed hope. Clubs that hadn’t been a part of the senior mix before were now leading contenders for the major trophies on offer, two of which are still prominent figures now.

But there must come a point, where it’s decided that enough is enough.

Four senior cricket teams playing each other for three months will quickly grow rather stale you’d imagine especially when it’s taken into account the considerable amount of time that is required to take out of a Saturday

to play. Make it more worthwhile and perhaps the players might be more keen to be a part and all of a sudden the pool is a little deeper than what it previously was.

Rugby has the perfect method to counter its diminishing stocks.

The combined competition with Ellesmere and North Canterbury has huge benefits for the district and it certainly has a more long-term impact when it comes to our representative sides.

Netball tried something similar and it was seen as a decent move in the right direction – perhaps it’s time the discussion lines were opened for cricket as well.

There’s a proud cricketing history in this region and many

great servants of the game will be further dismayed by yesterday’s news that Allenton won’t be a part of the senior competition this season.

So, let’s get talking – let’s get the neighbours on the phone. Surely between South Canterbury and Canterbury Country cricket there is an avenue that can be at least explored.

We’re a patriotic bunch at the best of times, so the lure of taking on some new teams with unfamiliar faces while effectively competing for the Mid Canterbury region might just be the perfect ticket into breathing some new life into the local senior cricket scene.

Right now who owns the rights to seeds that turn into your food is being opened up to the great bargaining session known as public consultation.

In September, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment released the first phase of public consultation, an issues paper, on the review of the Plant Variety Rights Act (1987) (PVR Act).

The issues paper, available on MBIE’s website, seeks feedback on key issues identified through targeted consultation about the existing Act. Federated Farmers was the lone farmer voice in this targeted consultation and we ensured the farmer perspective was heard amongst the strong views of plant breeders.

The review is of interest to Federated Farmers because of the potential implications any

changes to the existing Act will have for farm-saved seed, a possible extension of breeders’ rights to harvested material and any strengthening of enforcement of plant variety rights.

A review of the PVR Act has always been a desire of breeders, but not farmers.

The last Act was passed in 1987 and some minor amendments have occurred over time.

The review has been triggered because of New Zealand’s obligations to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Because of CPTPP, New Zealand’s legislation needs to be amended to give effect to, or become a party to, the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of

Plants (UPOV91).

But what does this all mean for you? The main point of contention will be around farm-saved seed.

The New Zealand Grain and Seed Trade Association has made it clear they will allow farmers to retain use of farm-saved seed, but they want farmers to pay a royalty for its use. They will of course collect the royalty, some at the end point and others at point of sale, and set the rate annually.

Federated Farmers has been discussing this matter with the association since 2014 and our position has remained clear.

As farmers we recognise the intellectual property on protected varieties, but our bottom line is we must retain the right to use farm saved seed and this must be included and enshrined in legislation.

It is our preference that if any royalties are to be paid on farm saved seed the system must be fair, simple, transparent and based on the seed with no end point royalties for farm saved

seed. The royalty rate should be set annually at a meeting between all parties. Federated Farmers has concern about end point royalties, as they can penalise for the capability of the individual farmer.

The rights of breeders over harvested material are also up for discussion, with MBIE considering how far, if at all, rights of Plant Variety Rights owners should extend over reproductive material (eg seeds) and harvested material.

Lower milksolid price forecast

A bumper start to the milk season and soft demand for Oceania dairy products the past few months has led Rabobank to forecast a lower milk price of $6.65 a kilogram of milksolids.

The waning demand is despite the bank tracking slowing milk growth across the world’s major seven dairy exporting nations over the third quarter of its dairy quarterly report.

A slowdown in combined milk production in the second quarter from the Big 7 – the European Union, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil – at just one per cent from last year has trickled through to this quarter.

Among several factors, drought conditions in parts of northern and western Europe have contributed to less milk going on the market.

The report says the lower milk production from areas in drought is at odds with New Zealand’s start to the dairy season where near-perfect weather and more cows milked over the winter has resulted in production growth of five per cent from June to August.

Rabobank dairy analyst Emma Higgins said the jump in New Zealand milk supply had created a lack of buyer urgency for Oceania products over the past quarter and this continued in the latest GDT auction.

“This lack of buyer urgency has resulted in weaker pricing which fed into the bank’s downward revision to its full-year forecast from $6.80/kg to $6.65/kg for the 2018/19 season.’’

Higgins said there had not been a larger downward revi-

sion because global milk supply growth was expected to tighten in the coming year.

She said a likely lift in Chinese demand across the remainder of the year would help underpin the New Zealand milk price this season.

Outside of Europe, hot and dry weather has shrivelled pastures in Australia and US milk supply continues to track below historical averages, while the Brazilian

truckers’ strike earlier in the year curbed milk supply growth and expensive feed could now start to bite Argentina production.

As a result, estimated milk flows for the Big 7 during the third quarter were expected to be at 0.4 per cent growth – the lowest since 2016.

Higgins said the impact of more expensive feed costs and tighter margins for producers globally were now evident and

would continue the squeeze into next year.

National dairy herd numbers are shrinking in Australia, Europe and the US as a result of producers scrambling to manage costs.

Their farmers would need better milk prices to offset the higher feed costs and to lift the production of their herds.

The report says developments in the US/China trade war, cur-

rency values and New Zealand production growth have the potential to “move the needle” on global dairy prices in coming months.

Domestic milk production growth of two per cent is expected for the full 2018/19 season.

However, Fonterra’s penalties for palm kernel extract use, now in effect, would create more uncertainly in milk production levels for the first half of next year.

Performance pleases Pamu

State-owned farming company Pamu Farms remains pleased with its financial and environmental performance even though its after-tax profit of $34.2 million was down 34 per cent from the previous year’s $51.9m.

Pamu, a brand name for Landcorp, was focusing on its $48.5m result before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and restructuring (EBITDAR) which was up $12.9m or 36 per cent from $35.6m in 2016-17 and its first ‘truly integrated’’ annual report for the financial year ending August.

The company achieved 7 per cent growth for total revenue of $247.1m.

A 15 per cent increase in livestock revenue of $16.3m and income of $8.1m from additional carbon units on forestry assets was offset by a $6.7m decline in milk revenue, and $1.8m decline for wool.

Increased tax was among explanations for its lesser net result.

Pamu said the company has changed the way it measured its performance beyond just financially.

Chief financial officer Steve McJorrow said the EBITDAR result was pleasing and it was back to paying shareholders a dividend totalling $5m for 2017/18.

“But like every other business Pamu is being measured against a much broader set of objectives and targets today than in the past. It is no longer just about our financial performance – we also want to report on our impact on the environment, the wellbeing of the Pamu team, the contributions we are making to our local communities, and so on.’’

Pamu had asked stakeholders the issues

they felt it needed to focus on, he said.

“While environmental impact, animal welfare and health and safety all featured prominently – there was also a focus on our impact and input into rural communities, connection with our local and global markets and the ongoing financial resilience of the company.’’

Pamu manages 126 farms throughout the country, including 84 farms it owns, over 372,115 hectares and has 679 employees.

McJorrow said Pamu had received good marks in many areas of the issues section in the report and this had also provided valuable insights for it, stakeholders and its owners in the public.

He said the company would continue to look at ways of improving value along the food chain after an exciting year.

“The standout has to be the crystallisation of three years of work which has seen our ground-breaking deer milk product reach the market in New Zealand and Australia. Chefs are raving about the unique taste and composition of deer milk and the future looks very bright for this product. Winning an innovation award at Fieldays was the icing on the cake,” he said.

Sales plans are in place for organic milk powder to go to China this financial year, joining exports of Pamu venison, lamb and wool to global markets.

As a good employer the company is working to reduce staff turnover and the gap in gender pay as well as focusing on changing rosters on dairy farms so workers can take leave more often.

Pamu has about 170 staff earning more than $100,000 with chief executive Steve Carden the obvious top earner for one person in the $720,00-$729,000 range.

Nuffield scholar to speak United Kingdom Nuffield scholar Anna Jones is in Mid Canterbury after investigating mainstream media coverage of agriculture.

Jones will present some of her findings today at a meeting hosted by the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) at Templeton in the afternoon.

Anna is speaking again at a FAR’s Women in Arable meeting in Ashburton this evening.

She will reveal the results of a new UK initiative training farmers to improve their communication skills and talk to the me-

dia in order to help to increase the public’s understanding of agriculture.

The initiative has been set up by Jones, a farmer’s daughter and former BBC TV and radio rural journalist.

Her visit to New Zealand, with funding from Agmardt, included her making a presentation to the Guild of Agricultural Journalists during an awards ceremony in Wellington last Friday.

Chorus sub-contractors investigated An investigation targeting Chorus contractors has found nearly all are breaching employment standards.

Violations include “volunteer” work or extended training periods without pay, plus sub-minimum wage pay.

The MBIE agency completed 75 visits as part of a joint operation with Immigration New Zealand and Inland Revenue in June.

Initial analysis identified 73 subcontractors rolling out broadband networks throughout Auckland had breached minimum employment standards – confirming the fear expressed by E tu spokesman Joe Gallagher that two cases uncovered by the union in December were “the tip of the iceberg”.

Yesterday, Gallagher said he felt vindicated. He accused Chorus of “hiding behind a model that pushes pressure onto sub-contractors who don’t have the experience of a big player like Downer”.

Sub-contractors knew they couldn’t compete if they followed the rules, Gallagher said.

The investigations represent the first phase of inquiry into employment breaches within the data cabling industry and further are planned across New Zealand,

MBIE says.

The investigation was triggered by complaints from the E tu union in December last year, centred on “volunteer” work.

The union’s complaints were picked up by then-Communications Minister Clare Curran, who urged the Labour Inspectorate to investigate.

At the time, Chorus said that the company – which is handling the bulk of the UFB fibre rollout – has always been “very clear that the use of volunteers was completely unacceptable. As soon as we were made aware that a few people were taking part in the initiative we put an immediate stop to it.”

Chorus has been approached for further comment yesterday.

Labour Inspectorate National Manager Stu Lumsden says, “We were made aware that migrant workers in the broadband industry were potentially being exploited by various subcontracting companies undertaking work on behalf of Chorus.

“Breaches we observed to date included contracting employers failing to maintain employment records, pay employees’ minimum wage, holiday entitlements, and provide employment agreements.

Meridian boss lifts lid on industry The boss of one of the country’s biggest power companies has lifted the lid on unfair penalty payments and admits the industry has “dirty secrets” that needed calling out.

Meridian Energy chief executive Neal Barclay said the power industry hasn’t been fair to New Zealanders and explained why his company was ditching prompt payment discounts.

“Let me be absolutely clear that these are not discounts in the genuine retail sense. They are penalties charged for late payment of bills, and they hurt those who genuinely struggled to pay for their energy the most. That’s unfair by any definition.”

Meridian, the country’s biggest power generator and 51 per cent owned by the Government, said the penalties generated revenue of $5 million.

While it was tough to admit the lack of fairness in the penalty system it was long overdue.

Meridian scrapped the prompt payment system in the wake of the Government’s review of the electricity sector which found low-income consumers miss out more often on prompt payment discounts, and which budgeting and advocacy groups say are really late-payment penalties.

“Profiting from people’s inability to pay a bill on time is something that never sat well with me,” said Barclay.

“We know that roughly one in four people miss their payment date from time to time.

“This can be due to a simple admin error that has seen customers pay more, just because they were a few days late.”

Barclay said the mechanism was

“They’re a hangover from the days when power companies were regional power boards run by local government, and they have no place in a competitive market like retail electricity.”

Barclay said not everyone was happy with the decision and there was a perception among some customers that they’ll now be paying more for power, and subsidising vulnerable customers through this change.

Nobody would be paying any more for power than previously.

Meridian would be replacing the discount with a credit for all customers.

The change came into force on October 1, which means everyone would pay the same price for their power, regardless if they paid this week or next.

“Yes, it means we lose $5 million a year in revenue. But that’s a small price for knowing you’re not punishing those customers that you should really be supporting the most. It’s a no-brainer, and my only regret is not doing it sooner,” he said.

Meridian’s earnings in the year to June 30 were $666m, up 1.4 per cent on the previous year and profit was up marginally to $201m.

Barclay said Meridian had been reviewing the system for some time.

During the next few months, the company would take further steps to become a retailer that treated all customers fairly, “no matter how long they’ve been with us, where they live or how much they earn”.

The preliminary review found that after adjusting for inflation, residential prices were 79 per cent higher than in 1990. Since 2000, New Zealand’s residential prices have risen faster than most other OECD countries.

About 103,000 households spent more than 10 per cent of their income on domestic energy in 2015– 16.

“People in this predicament are in what we call energy hardship.

The picture is even worse if housing costs are excluded: the figure jumps to 175,000 households.

Worryingly, children are over-represented in households experiencing energy hardship,” the review panel said.

It found that a two-tier retail market appears to be developing: those who actively shop around enjoy the benefits of competition, and those who don’t pay higher prices.

The average gap between the cheapest retailer’s price and the incumbent retailer’s price has increased by about 50 per cent since 2002, after accounting for inflation.

A final report, including recommendations on how to reform the industry, was due in May next year.

Slow roasted sticky pork ribs

1/3 C hoisin sauce 2T soy sauce 1T dry sherry 2T brown sugar 5cm-piece ginger, cut into matchsticks 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1t Chinese five spice 1 cinnamon stick 2 whole star anise 800g NZ pork spare ribs 1 bunch choy sum, cut into 5cm lengths 1 bunch baby pak choy, cut lengthways into wedges ■ Combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sherry, sugar, ginger, garlic, Chinese five spice, cinnamon and star anise in a shallow bowl.

Add the pork and turn to coat.

■ Place in the fridge for 1 hour to marinate.

■ Preheat the oven to 140°C. ■ Transfer the pork mixture to a shallow roasting pan and ar-

range in a single layer. Cover with foil and roast for 2 hours, turning occasionally.

■ Remove the foil and roast the pork for a further 30 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and pork is very tender.

■ While the pork cooks, cook the choy sum and pak choy in a steamer over a saucepan of sim-

mering water for 1 minute or until they are bright green.

■ Using tongs, quickly transfer the vegetables to a bowl of iced water to stop the cooking process.

■ Serve the pork on a large plate alongside the vegetables.

Pioneering musical ladies

un in conjunction with our Suffrage 125 exhibition Women Power: Freedom For Change, we are exploring stories of just a few of our earlier women who made a change or impact in our community. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing some of these with you.

Our poster advertising our exhibition features Jamie Phillip a young woman who is a local firefighter. She is pictured opposite a smart young lady with her bicycle.

This woman is Holly Breach. Holly and her mother Betsy encapsulate how difficult it would have been for women, before the introduction of social welfare in New Zealand.

Continuing our theme of women from our community’s past we look today at two musical ladies.

Chloe Gordon For many, Chloe Gordon needs no introduction. Violet Mabel Addis was born in 1913 to Thomas and Martha (nee Fleming). She attended Lismore School and left to help around the home, as many girls did.

While the Addis family booklet claims most of the family were musical, Chloe was truly talented.

Even before she could reach the pedals, Chloe won competitions, although her first teacher said she’d never be any good as she just wouldn’t practise her scales!

While she could read music it was her natural ear that made her a must at any function or concert.

Her first official debut was at the age of 12 playing at a concert at the Lismore Hall, many more would follow. As a young girl, she played the music for silent movies in Mayfield.

2 When Chole was 16 she moved to Ashburton and formed her own band, the Miss Addis’ Band, which became Mrs Gordon’s Orchestra when she married Henry Gordon in 1932. A temporary halt of two years occurred after a car accident, but when she recovered she formed a new band – The All Stars.

Chloe’s ensembles entertained throughout the wider Canterbury area, playing at concerts, wed-

dings, 21sts and other parties.

They were out most weekends playing at the many dances hosted by groups or locations.

She also played for the tap dancing competitions and the Ashburton Operatic Society.

Chloe was honoured at a special function to mark 50 years of public playing. Chloe loved entertaining and playing music. She gave freely of her time and talents for any charity that asked and visited Tuarangi Rest Home every week to entertain the residents.

In 1974 Chloe released her first album Take a Break with Chloe, followed by Come Alive with Chloe, both were very popular.

She was working on a third album when she died.

Chloe died in 1980.

Alice McLean Alice Mary Griffiths Rowley was born in Christchurch in 1870 to Joseph and Alice Henrietta (nee Gundy). Alice’s mother died the year after she was born. The Rowleys were a musical family with both Alice’s father and grandfather involved in the Christchurch Musical Union, as well as other groups. Her Aunt Mary was also a very accomplished pianist and singer.

As a young girl, Alice showed great talent and learnt piano and musical theory and composition under her Aunt Mary.

Alice was educated at the Christchurch Girls’ High School, being the youngest girl ever admitted, being only seven years of age when she entered.

After leaving High School Alice began a course of study at Canterbury University, where she eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Music. In doing so she became the first woman in either Australia or New Zealand to do so, and only the 11th in the British Isles.

As part of the degree she composed a cantata (a small opera), Prayer and Praise. She went on to compose many other songs and large works.

In 1892 Alice married Donald Mclean, of Kinraid, Tinwald. Before that Donald was manager of Lagmhor Estate. The couple had two children and while she was raising them Alice concentrated on her compositions rather than public appearances.

Donald died in 1906. She remained in Ashburton and in 1908 she married John Forrester, of the Lands and Survey department.

Alice became involved in fundraising for the war effort, playing at numerous concerts, often featuring her own compositions.

A lullaby, which she provided the music for, was featured in the

fundraising publication Lady Liverpool’s Gift Book, and a song she composed the music to: One flag one throne, was sung throughout the empire.

In 1920 Mr Forrester died. In 1931 Alice married again, this time to Walter MacKay, who was a brother to Jessie McKay, the lyricist of the lullaby Alice had provided the music to. Alice died in 1940.

One of her daughters was Alice May McLean, who later married Ross Brodie. Changing the spelling of her name slightly, Mae Brodie studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium 1935-1936 and was a well-known singer throughout Australia and New Zealand, but she also gave concerts in such exotic places as Rome, Milan and Budapest.

Full recovery expected Sam Cane never flinches so it should not surprise his grimace as he left the field in Pretoria has revealed itself to be a break in his neck.

After a collision with Springboks loose forward Francois Louw in the 35th minute of the All Blacks comeback victory, Cane stayed down and then looked in obvious pain.

He underwent surgery overnight to repair a fracture on the lower right side of his neck and will remain in South Africa for one week to recover.

All Blacks doctor Tony Paige said there was no nerve damage but he will stay to monitor Cane’s progress.

Cane will be out for at least three months and, therefore, misses the northern tour which opens with the third Bledisloe in Yokohama in three weeks.

“First he’s got to get through the operation,” Paige said.

“Then like any fracture it takes a couple of weeks and months.

“It will probably take about three months for the bone to get strong but we’ll just take it step by step.

“The operation is really just to

keep everything in the right place so the bone can heal on its own accord.”

Like All Blacks captain Kieran Read following his spinal surgery late last year, Cane’s return to play will be a cautious affair.

“Sam’s in good spirits he’s obviously sore in the middle of the night as you are the night after a fracture but he’s being well looked after and is getting lots of support and texts and phone calls.”

Given concern around a break in the neck, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen attempted to downplay fears.

“Once you remove the drama of it being a neck injury you’ve just got to look at it and treat it like any fracture,” Hansen said.

“It’s obviously really disappointing for Sam and his family but the pleasing news is he’s being given great medical care and best of all he’s going to get a full recovery and play again.”

Cane’s injury weakens the All Blacks loose forward stocks but the impressive form of Ardie Savea should see him step straight into the No. 7 jersey.

Elsewhere news is much more promising on the injured brigade with Dane Coles, Brodie Retallick, Liam Squire, Joe Moody and Nepo Laulala all now expected to head north.

Coles should make his longawaited comeback from knee and calf problems off the bench with Wellington in New Plymouth on Friday.

Get one more game under the belt and his warrant, as far as the All Blacks are concerned, will finally be approved.

Hansen said Moody and Laulala would lock horns when Counties host Canterbury in the Mitre 10 Cup this weekend, and he will no doubt welcome Retallick back from his shoulder injury with open arms.

Monster All Black squad for Japan tour All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has revealed plans for the end of year northern tour, including taking a whopping group of 51 players to Japan.

The All Blacks will face Australia in Yokohama for the third Bledisloe Cup fixture at the end of October, before playing Japan in Tokyo on November 3.

Then the New Zealand squad heads to London for the first of their three matches against England, Ireland and Italy.

“We’ll take 32 players to Europe, and we’ll take 32 initially to Japan, then an extra 19 players will come over for the Japan week,” Hansen said.

That will allow around 22 players to fly to London early to prepare for the clash at Twickenham the following week.

Trainer Nic Gill will travel with the majority of the front-line squad to London on the Thursday.

Hansen and the management group will remain for the one-off test in Tokyo on November 3 before joining the core squad in London.

The All Blacks ran similar split squads last year.

Expanding the net to fringe players once again will grow depth while giving the All Blacks more time to settle in England and plot how to take down Eddie Jones’ men.

Stunning solo victory Jason Stainger produced a strong solo effort to take victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Ashburton Contracting Ltd, Small Business Accounting, 32km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday.

With the race coming together in the concluding stages, Stainger dug deep to keep the chasing groups at bay.

Don Summerfield led in the chasing group to secure the second-place spoils.

Michelle Knight, riding herself into some of the good form she showed last season, claimed the final podium position.

Don Morrison, Nigel Chatterton, and Shane Gerken rounded out a competitive top six.

Scratch marker Shane Brookland rode the distance in 46.25 to secure fastest time honours from co-markers Tony Ward and Brad Hudson.

The juniors contested a 16km handicap event.

Jack Templeton opened his season account with a hardfought win, breaking away on the final rise and holding on to lift the trophy.

Zac Brookland showed plenty of fight to take second.

Maddie Lowry put her recent good form to the test to secure third place and third fastest time honours.

Scratch marker Ethan Titheridge charged through the field to take fourth spot and fastest

time honours, riding the course in 25.40.

Caitlin Titheridge continued her good form securing second fastest time honours.

Debbie Skinner reversed last week’s result to take the division 2 victory from Janette Hooper, with Sue Templeton riding into third place.

Next week the club will contest a 38km handicap event around the Wakanui-Hakatere course.

For the majority of the 2018 Bathurst 1000 it looked like it was going to be free of a spectacular crash or a mechanical drama for the leader towards the end of the race.

Of course there would be some sort of drama, it’s Bathurst after all, and rather than a mechanical failure it was a physical frailty that saw the long time leader of the race David Reynolds (with codriver Luke Youlden) succumb to cramp with 30 laps to go.

“I’m so, so devastated,” said an emotional Reynolds.

“I had cramp in my leg and I didn’t know what pedal I was pushing. This has never happened to me before and I just can’t believe it happened to us.”

Erebus team owner Betty Klimenko wasn’t so much philosophical, more pragmatic.

“I give myself 15 minutes to dwell on it and then move on,” she said. “There is no need for commiserations. If you worry about things like this, you shouldn’t be in motor racing.”

On the plus side of the race ledger, and you couldn’t have written a script for, in a pure unicorn moment for the retiring – from a full time drive – Craig Lowndes along with Steven Richards took advantage of Reynolds misfortune and drove off into the setting sun and his seventh win and Richards’ fifth.

“It’s fantastic to get another win,” said Richards. “My first two I won before having kids and the last two the kids weren’t here because they thought they were the good luck charm by not turning up. This year they are here and got to see me win.”

DJR Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin finally made it onto the podium after coming so close in the past. Although it wasn’t the top spot, he’s nonetheless happy to be able to have finally made it.

“It’s very cool to finally get on the podium,” said McLaughlin.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed about. I probably picked a good one especially with Craig winning. It’s something I’ll cherish forever.

“As a Ford driver I got booed and I thought about calling them a pack of a***holes [as Jim Richards did in 1992] but didn’t want them throwing anything at me.

“We’ll be back next year better and stronger.”

They might be slightly low in numbers, but there’s no escaping the quality of the nominations for Sunday’s Methven Cup. A two-pronged attack from the champion stable of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen with current Cup favourite, Ultimate Machete and new open class pacing star Cruz Bromac heads the 14-strong field entered in the $30,000 Group Three event – but the star-quality doesn’t stop there.

The locals will be represented by the Leo O’Reilly-trained James Dean who produced a huge run in the race last year after being wiped out at the start.

A key lead up race on the path to the New Zealand Trotting Cup, the race gives horses a strong pathway toward the remaining features before the second Tuesday in November such as the Ashburton Flying Stakes and the Kaikoura Cup. More than 200 nominations have been received for the big day with large field sizes set to be the order of the day.

A number of those nominations stepped out at Saturday’s Mt Hutt Trotting Club workouts – a strong form guide from a punter’s perspective for future racing.

At the Methven meeting in September, seven winners came out of the trials held on the track the week before.

Of those who impressed on Saturday, Dora Explorer certainly stood out.

The David McCormick-trained trotter made a mistake at the start, but staged a huge recovery to come up just short of winning the heat.

She was desperately unlucky in her last start at Methven and should she bring her manners on

Sunday, she’ll be a major player.

Sunday will also see some of the best punters in the land come together in an effort to win the heat of the Kiwi Punters Championship.

The nationwide competition, from which winners qualify for the grand final worth $100,000 on Show Day, sees punters put their skills up against other likeminded people in the all day long competition – made even harder this weekend for Methven’s notorious reputation for a big dividend.

Entry fee for Sunday’s competition is $500, which is also the betting money for the day, with the winner walking away with $2000 cash.

Sword Of Osman remains on track for the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas despite fading to fifth in last weekend’s Gr.2 Sacred Falls Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m). “He will improve a lot with the run,” David Ellis said. “He missed the jump slightly and Opie dug him up because the plan was to lead, but he just raced a bit strong. It was only his second run this prep and he had a bit of a puff and I think there is improvement.”

Robbie adds lustre to the Holmes family name Leithfield Beach horseman Robbie Holmes extended his family’s incredible legacy in New Zealand harness racing when winning his 500th race as a trainer on Sunday.

Holmes brought up the ‘half ton’ when he drove Princess Fulham to victory in his stable colours at Timaru’s Phar Lap Raceway.

Earlier on in the day, he recorded training win number 499 with a trotter, Tres Magnifique.

The notably humble Holmes said his achievement was not something he had been focused on leading in to Sunday’s meeting.

“It has been a wee while since we started, but we have jumped that hurdle and we’re halfway to ‘a grand’ now,” he said.

Holmes has trained 10 Group race winners among his haul of 500 victories, with five of those coming at Group 1 level.

The majority of those successes came with his champion mare, Kiwi Ingenuity.

Holmes clearly rates her as the

best horse he has trained.

“For sure, she was one out of the box to be honest and hopefully we will see another one like her in the barn.”

Kiwi Ingenuity scored Group 1 wins in the New Zealand Oaks, New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Stakes, the Queen Of Hearts and at the Harness Jewels, where she set the all-comers New Zealand mile record at Ashburton in 2009.

Naturally, winning those races were highlights of the mare’s career, but Holmes rates winning the Pelorus four-year-old Classic at Blenheim highly, as well.

“When she beat the colts at Blenheim, that was probably one of the most satisfying wins because that stamped her mark that she was going to go places.”

Holmes’ first Group 1 win came when he trained and drove Romper Stomper to win the 2007 New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All. Tres Magnifique took Holmes to

499 training wins when she trotted to a maiden victory in her first run back from a spell.

“She hasn’t been entirely 100 per cent foolproof, but she put it all together.

“She is out of a nice mare, Smitten, from the trotting family of the

Smiths from Kaikoura.”

Smitten is from a daughter of Kahu Del, the dam of champion trotter, Lyell Creek.

Holmes’ 500th win milestone came when Princess Fulham dashed along the Timaru passing lane to win.

“There wasn’t a whole lot of form in the race and I thought if she could stay handy she should be able to ping home.

“She has got good gate-speed and everything worked out for her.”

Holmes’ first training victory came when Albion Park won a maiden trot at Gore in 1998.

The trainer’s 500th training win milestone adds another chapter to the incredible legacy the Holmes name has in New Zealand harness racing.

Four generations of the family have achieved top-level success.

Robbie’s late father, Colin, had success as a trainer, as did his uncle, Kevin, a World Drivers Championship winner.

Robbie’s grandfather, Allan, and great-uncle, Maurice, were both New Zealand Cup winners.

Holmes is the great-grandson of Inter Dominon Pacing Final and New Zealand Cup winning driver, Free Holmes.

Hamilton in again Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has cruised to victory at the Japanese Grand Prix to take another major step towards his fifth Formula One world title.

Hamilton was helped by a rash overtaking move by Ferrari title rival Sebastian Vettel, who collided with Max Verstappen while trying to overtake the Dutch driver.

The accident on the eighth lap, after Vettel had moved from eighth on the grid to fourth, spun the Ferrari driver off the track, putting him back to 19th, before he eventually finished sixth.

Hamilton was untroubled from pole position and took the chequered flag at the end of the 53 laps on the Suzuka circuit ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas.

It is a second consecutive Japanese GP for the 33-year-old Briton, who now has a lead of 67 points over Vettel with four races of the season remaining.

Verstappen finished third and Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo was fourth behind his Red Bull team-mate, after starting 15th on the grid.

Dearly loved wife of the late Robert (Bob), much loved and cherished mum and motherin-law of Andrew and Katherine, Peter and Nicki and the late John. Treasured Grandma of Lewis and Sarah, Chantelle and Scott, Thomas, George and James.

Now at peace with her beloved Bob and John.

The death knell for Mid Canterbury cricket took another step in the wrong direction yesterday when the Allenton Cricket Club advised they would not be fielding a senior team in this year’s local competition.

The season officially opens this weekend when the annual T20 competition gets underway and Allenton will have a team for the shorter version of the game, but when play switches to the longer format in a few weeks, one of the most successful clubs in the district’s cricketing history will be

missing from the action.

General manager of cricket in Mid Canterbury, Mark Medlicott confirmed to the Guardian yesterday afternoon that he had just hours earlier received the news.

“It’s a real shame to lose a team like Allenton,” he said.

“There has been some serious work going on behind the scenes to try and get the numbers together, but the call had to be made and they’ve decided not to field a team.”

It is understood that the club had seven committed players to the season and now five of them will travel to play for the Methven

club who had also been light on numbers.

Just two years ago, the Allenton side were the dominant force of the local cricket scene and pocketed every major piece of silverware available bar one for the season, as they sat head and shoulders above the district’s other clubs.

But from nigh-on unbeatable one season, things didn’t go quite as well the next and the writing was perhaps on the wall when Allenton were forced to default a match late in the season with up to 12 players unavailable, largely due to a local golf competition.

Allenton stalwart and long-time cricket scorer, Bob Bruhns, said that the Allenton side joined the senior competition in 1987 after plying their trade in the secondgrade competition for 30-odd years.

“It’s shattering news to learn that they won’t have a team this year,” Bruhns said.

Six teams in total will take to the pitch this weekend for the first day of the T20 competition, but both Allenton and the recently formed Tech Old Dogs won’t be there for the remainder of the season.

The loss of Allenton means that just four teams will compete for the Studholme and Pritchard Shields as well as the Muirhead Rosebowl this year.

“Around 120 years ago when cricket first began here in Ashburton there were four senior teams, now all that time later we are back to where we are started, “It’s really disappointing to see,” Bruhns added.

The Allenton and Old Dogs T20 sides will be joined this week by Methven, Coldstream, Lauriston and Tech for this weekend’s competition.
