Fatal pursuit driver pleads guilty

The learner driver, just 17, says he was egged on by his mates. To lead police on a high-speed chase so they could film the action.

They’d spent the night cruising the city streets. Just by driving after 10pm, drinking alcohol, and carrying passengers, the teenager behind the wheel was breaking the law under the conditions of his learner licence.

And when a police car signalled for him to pull over just before 4am on October 22 this year, he took off.

But when he ran a red light, at what he later estimated was 100km/h, and T-boned an innocent motorist, 64-year-old Kenneth McCaul who would die from his injuries, the fun stopped.

The pursuit had lasted four minutes and four seconds.

Yesterday, the teen Canterbury driver, who cannot yet be named, entered a guilty plea to a charge of manslaughter at the High Court in Christchurch.

He also admitted a charge of reckless driving causing injury to one of his backseat passengers, also aged 17, who, the court heard, is currently in an induced coma. He has a broken neck “and his prognosis is not yet known”.

Justice Rachel Dunningham remanded him on bail for sentencing next month.

PHOTO SUPPLIED time. That night, the teenager had been driving four of his young friends around the streets of Christchurch in a Toyota Caldina, according to the summary of facts document.

At around 3.58am, a marked police patrol car spotted him, did a u-turn, and parked on the opposite side of the road facing the teen.

When the youngster drove past, the police officer did another u-turn and followed him along Papanui Road.

As they approached the intersection of Langdons Road, the police officer activated his red and blue lights for the teen driver to pull over.

However, he accelerated away, soon reaching speeds of 90km/h

in the 50km/h zone.

Going into the city, he drove through a red light and past the Casino. He’s continued speeding through town before a second marked patrol car joined the pursuit.

As he drove down Glandovey Road, he went through a red light at the Idris Road intersection and T-boned a Hyundai saloon driven

by McCaul.

McCaul was driving to work early to secure a car park and had planned to sleep in his car before starting his shift at Christchurch Hospital.

The front of the teen’s Toyota hit McCaul’s car in the passenger side between the front and back wheels, shunting it across the road and into a stone wall. It bounced off the wall and came to rest on the edge of the footpath.

The badly damaged teen’s car came to rest about 30m up the road.

McCaul was rushed to hospital but died a short time later, police say.

All four of the teen’s passengers were taken to hospital with injuries.

The teen driver, who has previously appeared before the court, later told police that his friends were encouraging him to flee from the police, while further claiming a front seat passenger was recording the chase on his cellphone.

He admitted breaching his learner licence conditions by consuming alcohol, carrying passengers, and driving after 10pm. He also estimated that he reached speeds of up to 110km/h through the city streets to escape police, and that he estimated he was doing 100km/h at the time of the crash.

Interim name suppression for the teenager will be argued before he is sentenced on December 16.

Ashburton’s ultra fast broadband uptake growing – slowly

Just over half of Ashburton’s households are now using ultra fast broadband.

Crown Infrastructure’s quarterly connectivity figures show the district is in fourth equal place with Rangiora when it comes to taking up the UFB option, with Rolleston leading the way both nationally and in

Canterbury with a 74 per cent uptake.

Lincoln is second on 67 per cent, and Timaru, on 58 per cent, is the third highest.

Broadcasting, communications and digital media minister Kris Faafoi described the uptake in Rolleston as “unprecedented”.

It is well ahead of Whatawhata, 69 per cent and Lincoln, 67 per cent.

“With UFB rolled out in 126 towns and cities around New Zealand, the deployment is about 87 per cent completed and well ahead of schedule,” he said.

Currently 79 per cent of New Zealanders can now access UFB but the national uptake is now just under 55 per cent, up from 52 per cent in June.

The government’s target is to

have UFB rolled out to 406 towns and cities to enable 99.8 per cent of the population to have access to improved broadband by the end of 2023.

Broadband coverage in rural areas has also steadily increased, he said, with about 40,000 households and businesses in hard to reach regions of New Zealand now having access to improved broadband

under phase two of the rural Broadband Initiative.

An additional 1416 households and businesses were provided with coverage between June and September.

During the quarter 14 new mobile towers were commissioned, providing mobile coverage to three more tourism areas and 70 kilometres of state highway mobile blackspots.

Hannah deals to dancing curve ball

Ashburton teenager Hannah Wakelin has been thrown a challenge for Big Little Theatre Company’s latest show.

The 18-year-old has had her work cut out for her as the choreographer for Twelfth Night, where she has been tasked with teaching 24 youngsters how to dance.

Director Jackie Heffernan said the show was Shakespeare with many twists. It consequently had a mix of genres, and one of the curve balls she had wanted Hannah to contend with was teaching Elizabethan palm dancing to Celtic music.

“I think working with children who are not dancers, with music that lends itself to a jig and no more, has been a challenge,” Heffernan said.

Hannah said she went to YouTube to research palm dancing, which she found involved people dancing palm to palm and switching around their partners in large gatherings.

Hannah said as well as the palm dancing, there had been other scenarios to incorporate, including each actor having a silly dance to go with their character.

And despite Heffernan’s concept of the show being a tough call, Hannah said it had not been too bad at all, thanks to the enthusiasm of the actors.

“They are all enthusiastic,

which helps so much. They are all really into it and open to learning a lot. A lot of them go home and practice and come back better the next time,” she said.

Hannah graduated in May following four years at Idyllwild Arts, a performing arts high school in California.

She now plans to not only continue her passion of dancing through choreography and teaching, but also study towards becoming a paediatrician, beginning with enrolling in health sciences at university next year.

Hannah said ultimately her paediatrician work could also tie in with dance, as it was a form of movement which had therapeutic benefits.

“I’m still going to keep dancing no matter what I do,” Hannah said.

Meanwhile, Heffernan said Twelfth Night rehearsals were going well, with the actors’ presentation of Shakespeare so far proving to be “world class”.

“It’s the very best of Shakespeare with a BLTC twist,” Heffernan said.

Heffernan is also being assisted by company patron Moyra Whiting, who is helping with singing and vocals in the show.

Twelfth Night will have a gala performance to celebrate the company’s 10th anniversary.

It will run November 22 to 24 at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Friday festival nights could be a retail bonanza

Ashburton retailers have new opportunities to capture cash this Christmas by opening their doors during a series of Friday night events that will bring hundreds of people to town.

The Ashburton District Council will roll out its annual Nights of Lights festival, with events planned for Baring Square east

each Friday from November 29 until December 20.

And as part of that event, the council is encouraging the town’s retailers to consider temporarily bringing back Friday night shopping, by opening their doors during the four festival nights.

Nights of Lights kicks off on November 29 when the town’s giant Christmas tree will be lit

as part of a family night that will see a range of performances, children’s activities and food stalls pack into the square.

Events will run from 6.30pm with the tree lighting planned for 9.30pm.

A Buskers night is planned for December 6 and 20 with a movie night to be held on December 13.

Ashburton district councillor

and retailer Carolyn Cameron is backing the council’s call for retailers to take advantage of the festival nights to open their doors and provide an opportunity for people to Christmas shop.

She plans to get out on the street and talk to her fellow retailers about the opportunity the Nights of Lights events present.

nights is a fabulous idea, we need to bring this vibrancy into our town, but everyone has to commit to this,” she said.

The council was making a big effort to create a festive feeling in town and having shops open on those nights would only add to that, she said.

“It’s a marvellous initiative and it would be great to see retailers open.”

Penny has rural study in her sights

If you’re passionate about a subject then study never seems like hard work, says Ashburton College’s top Year 12 student Penny Stilgoe.

She achieved a healthy trophy haul at this year’s Year 12 prizegiving, not only taking the ANZ Bank Academic Achievement award but also top subject prizes for accounting, biology and chemistry.

“I work hard and it does take a lot of time but I really enjoy it, they’re subjects I’m passionate about,” she said.

Her favourite subject is agriculture and that’s where she sees her future, studying towards a degree in agricultural science at Lincoln University.

“There are heaps of opportunities there, they’re incredible.”

While she puts long hours into study, Penny has plenty of distractions. She’s a volunteer with the Willowby Fire Brigade and she’s chair of the district’s TeenAg group.

“It’s a bit of a balancing act

with late nights definitely in there coming up to exams, but I’ve got incredible family support,” she said.

When the fire siren goes, Penny and her mother both respond, but if there’s an exam the next day and the call-out is at night, Penny said that might be a call she skips.

TeenAg is a group she keenly supports and takes part in as many of its events as possible, recently competing in a YFC skills day at Mt Somers Station.

She also holds down an after school job and over the summer holidays will be working full-time on a dairy farm.

Penny is no newcomer to awards, having taken top student prizes each year at college and winning a Year 9 scholarship, however, she won’t be going into Year 13 with her eye on the dux award at the year’s end.

“That would just put too much pressure on myself.

I’ll be looking longer term, to university and my goal will be on scholarships,” she said.

Penny Stilgoe is Ashburton College’s top Year 12 student for 2019.

Elizabeth Ashford reflects on four decades of Guardians

E

lizabeth Ashford recalls the first �me she appeared in the Ashburton Guardian. It was in 1979 when, as a young lawyer, she joined the legal firm, Spencer and Ritchie.

Now 40 years later, the Guardian s�ll plays an important part in her life as director of her family’s company, Ashford Handicra� Ltd and a trustee of Advance Ashburton Community Founda�on.

When Advance Ashburton Community Founda�on was established in 2003, the Guardian covered the event and helped explain the concept of giving locally, she said.

“Many Ashburtonians have prospered in our district and wanted to give back to the community.”

Elizabeth said the founda�on provided a low-cost structure to assist locals fulfil their philanthropic wishes now and in perpetuity.

It helps connect generous people with causes that ma�er in the district.

“As one of the early trustees, the Guardian’s owner, Bruce Bell, was very generous in publishing informa�on about the founda�on.

Subsequently the paper has reported on the founda�on’s progress and its scholarships and grants,” she said.

On a personal level, Elizabeth and Richard Ashford look forward to their daily ritual of reading the Guardian.

A�er a day spent in the office in front of a screen, it’s a great way to relax and catch up on local events and news and the world beyond Mid Canterbury, Elizabeth said.

“The paper plays an important role as a voice of the community. It is unashamedly local, repor�ng on local news and championing local issues.”

want to share a personal memory with you.

I’ve been editor of the Ashburton Guardian twice. Once during the 1970s and ’80s and the other when I was a small boy.

During recent Saturday issues of the Guardian, many of your iden��es and subscribers have talked about their associa�on with the newspaper and what it’s meant to their lives. The anniversary issue was my opportunity to tell my story.

But there’s another one I’ve only shared with close rela�ves, who’ve long since passed away.

From about seven years of age I wanted to be a newspaper man.

Not just the editor but the owner, publisher, sales rep, layout expert, printer and the person who delivered the Guardian on their bicycle.

When I was about six, my parents moved from Ashburton to Timaru. Instead of subscribing to the Timaru Herald, my dad chose the Christchurch Star. We didn’t read the local news, however, I made up for it, when I came home to Ashburton.

My aunts subscribed to the Guardian. I would study it, read it, understand how everything worked, then I’d prepare my own newspaper. My aunts had to meet the cost of the paper, felts, pencils and rubbers.

I wrote the stories, sold the adver�sing and delivered it to a readership of about five. I became an absolute menace.

I interviewed people, pocketed sixpence for their adver�sing and was driven around Ashburton delivering the newspaper to family members. It kept me busy for hours.

I became a media mogul and the money I made was invested in Just William books at Kerrs, Pickfords or Newton Jones.

My youthful reign as editor lasted several years. By then the family was broke and, at primary school,

Malcolm Hopwood we started our own newspaper.

The one thing I insisted on was the �tle, the masthead. It would always be the Ashburton Guardian.

I liked the name. A guardian is someone or something that protects or defends. I saw the Guardian as a newspaper that protected or defended the truth.

One-hundred-and-forty years ago that was important as Mid Canterbury grew and established itself. The name wasn’t changed in 1900 when Robert Bell bought a financial interest. It’s equally important today under Bruce Bell, Ma� Markham and their team.

It remains relevant in the years ahead.

Back in 1879 it could have been the Bugle, the Telegraph, the Tribune or the Daily News. It wasn’t.

The Manchester Guardian was one of the most important and influen�al newspapers in Britain and has been for nearly 200 years.

If it was good enough for Manchester, it was good enough for Ashburton.

I’m delighted.

Feathers are flying as top contenders battle it out for Bird of the Year 2019.

The Mid Canterbury birds of fantail and banded dotterel are in the leading five, but nowhere near the top of the perch, a position held by the hoiho and kakapo.

Forest & Bird is calling on the nation to vote before deadline at 5pm tomorrow, and help end the tiebreaker between the flightless seabird and flightless forest bird.

The kakapo has high profile backing from overseas on its side after English actor Stephen Fry reminded his 12.7 million Twitter followers of his 2009 experience with a very amorous Sirocco.

Spokesperson Megan Hubscher said a flock of smaller birds was hot on the heels of the front runners, polling in the top five, and these were the black robin, fantail and banded dotterel.

“All of them are adorable and could easily swoop in for the win over the next couple of days,” Hubscher said.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon is supporting the banded dotterel, which nests in the Ashburton River.

“Bandies can be found nesting in riverbeds and estuaries around Canterbury, and other parts of New Zealand, but unfortunately their small population is under threat. It’s estimated 20,000 to 50,000 remain, with ferrets, stoats, weasels and rats some of their biggest predators,” Falloon said.

Fellow bandy fan is Ashburton amateur ornithologist Don Geddes.

If he was to vote in the competition, he would also be looking at the pied oystercatcher, which also nests in the Ashburton River, and the falcon, which lives in Mid Canterbury’s foothills.

Trailing the flock is the black-billed gull, backed by Ashburton environmentalist Edith Smith.

The world’s rarest gull made itself infamous in Ashburton in spring as a flock of about 300 congregated at Harvey Norman, New World and Mitre 10.

Federated Farmers is backing the blue duck, or whio.

Environment spokesperson Chris Allen farms at Ashburton Forks, and said everyone can relate to the whio, on New Zealand’s $10 note.

“It’s a tough little guy, and there aren’t too many of them. Like farmers, it’s paddling away, head down, bum up, getting its work done the best it can,” Allen said.

A time to remember

The end of World War One will be remembered in a simple ceremony at Ashburton’s Baring Square cenotaph on Monday.

Ashburton’s Armistice Day ceremony will be mirrored around the world as the sacrifices of soldiers in all wars is remembered.

The event is always held at the same time – 11am on November 11, the exact time guns ceased firing and the signing of an armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers.

Last year’s event marked 100 years since the end of the first World War with a large ceremony in Ashburton, but this year, Ashburton RSA president Merv Brenton said the commemoration will return to a more simple style.

The ceremony begins when the town centre clock strikes the 11th hour.

Deputy mayor Liz McMillan and Brenton will speak, a wreath will be laid and the Last Post played.

Ceremonies such as Armistice Day provided an opportunity for people to take a few minutes out of their lives to remember the soldiers who had fought in all wars, Brenton said.

“It’s important to do this. We can’t afford to forget what these

was important they were also remembered and their sacrifices recognised, he said.

“We must support those people, they’re coming back with a whole range of different issues today. They are fighting now in a very different environment.

Once it was a gun and you could see what was coming, but it’s very different today.”

Armistice Day was a reminder to everyone that the sacrifices made by every person who fought in any war must not be forgotten, Brenton said.

Millane murder trial wraps up its first week

The Grace Millane murder trial has finished its first week, after hearing yesterday that DNA tests strongly suggested that spots of blood found on the accused’s fridge were hers.

The trial continued yesterday with more expert forensic evidence about what police found in the accused killer’s downtown Auckland apartment.

The trial will resume on Monday morning.

Yesterday Dianne Crenfeldt, an expert forensic scientist from

the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), told the court about her analysis of “probable blood staining” in the CityLife hotel room where the British backpacker died.

DNA tests provided “extremely strong scientific support” that the blood was Millane’s.

A 27-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, is charged with murdering her in December last year as she was travelling the world as part of a year-long solo OE. Crown prosecutors allege that on the night of December 1 – the

eve of Millane’s 22nd birthday – the accused strangled the young Brit to death in his central city apartment after the pair spent the night drinking.

After arriving in Auckland, the recent university graduate was matched with her accused killer on the dating app Tinder.

Millane’s body was found crammed into a suitcase and dumped in a shallow grave in Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges a week later.

The final witness of the day was Diana Kappatos, an ESR forensic toxicologist who per-

formed a post-mortem toxicology report on Millane’s body.

She said the young woman had 106 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, which is more than twice the legal limit for New Zealand drivers.

However, because the test occurred days after Millane died the levels may have been distorted.

“I cannot say if it was concentrated blood or diluted with other fluids,” she said.

Kappatos added there was also no sign of drugs or poisons in Millane’s body.

Humbling donation NZME Staff at a Hawke’s Bay business are sure to be on Santa’s “nice” list after they donated their Christmas bonuses to Nourished for Nil. The donation made on Tuesday, to the tune of $1540, was made without any fuss by an unnamed business, leaving the charity over the moon.

Nourished for Nil co-founder Christina McBeth said the funds landed in her inbox with no prior warning.

“From a local business it is one of the bigger donations we have received.

“We had no idea this was coming our way. It’s really nice to have a bright spot pop up like that.”

She said the donation was humbling.

“These people decided they wanted to support us with something earmarked to support them – their Christmas bonuses. And that is humbling. “[With the donation] We decided that we will create a separate account and maybe make it part of our ‘rainy day’ funds.

“The funds could then go towards paying our security guard, whom we hired six weeks ago.

“Unfortunately where we are located there is not a lot of street parking, and people were parking on the forecourt so we had to hire a security guard who is paid only for an hour, but works two hours.”

The funds could also go towards the volunteers, she said.

“The money itself is enough, the sentiment behind it is what means more to us.

“This is what it is all about, it doesn’t actually get much sweeter than that. The sentiment 100 per cent blows us away.”

Nourished for Nil was formed in 2017 by Christina McBeth and Louise Saurin with a mission to rescue food that would otherwise go to waste and redistribute it to the Hawke’s Bay community.

They are a non-profit organisation with a simple system, rescuing food from donors to recipients in the space of mere hours.

Final buyback events Police have announced more than 200 collection events will be held around the country as the end of the amnesty and buyback draws to an end, but Mid Canterbury based firearms owners will have to hit the road if they want to attend them.

More than 200 events have been announced nationwide up until the end of the amnesty on December 20.

However, all but two in Canterbury will be held in Christchurch, with the other two held in Timaru.

The events in Timaru will be held at the West End Hall and Washdyke Community Centre on December 6 and 7 respectively.

The remainder will be held in Christchurch, with the next at 545 Wairakei Road on November 13, and the last on the final day of the amnesty on December 20, at the Christchurch Central Police Station.

“Anyone prosecuted will lose their firearms licence and face a penalty of up to 5 years imprisonment. Don’t risk it – please get organised now and take the opportunity to hand in at one of our events, whether you are in Waipu or Wanaka.”

Police have already held over 330 collection events throughout New Zealand so far and have

talked to nearly 20,000 firearms owners.

Other options for firearms owners include hand in at an approved dealer, modification of some prohibited firearms or, for unique items, make an application for compensation.

Police also want to remind people that it’s important for everyone’s safety that when firearm holders attend a collection event, go along to a dealer site or transport their firearm for modi-

fication, that they clear their firearms and parts of any ammunition before leaving home.

“This is so important,” he said.

“You do not want to be putting yours or the community’s safety at risk with a loaded firearm.”

A total of 397 prohibited firearms have been handed in at collection events across the Ashburton District this year.

A police spokesperson said previously it was not possible to say if they believed all the prohibited firearms in the district had been collected as it was common for people to travel outside of their own regions to attend the events.

“The Canterbury Firearms Collection team have held four events in the Ashburton District across July, August and September,” they said.

“A number of people we spoke to at events have travelled from outside the district because they wished to be anonymous or just felt more comfortable handing in outside their local area.”

At the four events held in the Ashburton District which included one in Ashburton, two in Rakaia and one in Methven, a total of 397 firearms were handed in.

A total of 1221 parts were also handed in, all by a total of 262 people.

1.2 million hours of community work Offenders in Ashburton working at Hakatere Marae to help maintain the buildings, regenerate the vegetable gardens and develop native plantings are just some of the offenders who have contributed 1.2 million hours of community work in the past financial year.

In 2018/19, the average number of offenders serving a community work sentence on any given day was 12,684 people, and the average sentence length was 94 hours.

“Community work sentences are a great way for people to pay something positive back to society. There is a massive benefit to

the wider community, with community work hours supporting activities being carried out by schools, councils, charities and iwi,” Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis said.

“The work that offenders are involved in can give them a sense of purpose and pride.

They get to be part of worthwhile projects and causes, while learning teamwork and other skills that can help them stay on the right track once they’ve completed their sentence.”

Work parties have undertaken community work at a variety of locations throughout the country, including Tapu Te Ranga Marae in

Wellington, which was the scene of a major fire in June.

Offenders have been working at the marae since January this year, completing over 2700 hours of work on tasks including paint stripping, weeding and mowing the grounds, and de-nailing, disassembling and moving wood.

“The June fire was devastating for the whanau from Tapu Te Ranga and the local community. It’s great to see Corrections and the people they manage doing their bit to help as the marae embarks on this next chapter,” Davis said.

Keep rural properties secure

Police are reminding people in rural areas to try and deter opportunistic thieves.

Police are currently making inquiries in to a burglary on a property in the Mayfield area that took place between August 22 and November 2.

“Inquiries are ongoing and we encourage anyone who has information or seen anything suspicious in the area between those dates to call 105 quoting file number 191102/9620,” Ashburton sub-area supervisor senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins said.

“While theft and damages to properties is not common in the area, unfortunately thieves are largely opportunistic and will jump on any chance to steal unattended goods.

“Report it. Often rural crimes aren’t reported. If you see a crime taking place then call police immediately on 111, if it’s already happened then give us a call on 105.”

Jenkins said people should ensure boundary fences and gates are secure and that people should also consider installing security lighting around implement sheds, milking sheds and farm houses.

“Make sure valuable items such as fuel, chainsaws, firearms and farm vehicles are secured when not in use,” he said.

“Make use of your neighbours to keep an eye on each other’s property. If going away for the holidays let them know, where possible have someone stay on the property and avoid placing messages on social media on your absence.

“Lock fuel bowsers and tanks to prevent thefts or damage and consider installing gateway alarms or CCTV cameras to record any vehicles entering your property.”

Deaths see men deported AP In an extremely unusual case, South Korea deported two North Korean fishermen after determining they had killed 16 other crew members on their boat and then fled to South Korean waters, Seoul officials said.

South Korea has a policy of accepting North Koreans who want to resettle in the South to avoid political oppression and poverty at home. This week’s deportations were the first South Korea has carried out of any North Korean who came to the South since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, according to Seoul’s Unification Ministry, which deals with North Korean affairs.

The two North Koreans, both men in their 20s, were captured in their boat south of the countries’ eastern sea border last Saturday, according to the Unification Ministry.

It said a South Korean investigation later found the two had killed 16 colleagues, including the captain.

Ministry spokesman Lee Sang-min said South Korea decided to expel the two fishermen to North Korea because they were “heinous criminals” who could not be recognised as refugees under international laws. Lee said the two were sent back through the Koreas’ land border.

While fishing in waters near Russia and elsewhere, the two men collaborated with another crew member and killed the captain, who they said had abused them. The trio later killed 15 other fishermen on the boat to cover up their actions.

The three went back to Kimchaek port with the intention of moving to another region of North Korea. But the third fisherman was arrested near the port, and the two fled North Korea using the same boat, the Unification Ministry said, citing the government investigation.

When their boat sailed across the sea border last week, they were chased by a South Korean navy ship which fired warning shots at them. After two days, the two were captured by the South Korean navy. They later told investigators they wanted to resettle in South Korea, but South Korean authorities determined they only wanted to avoid North Korean arrest and informed North Korea of the plan to deport them, the ministry said.

Observers say the men are likely to receive heavy punishment in North Korea, including possible execution.

Some South Korean media questioned why the South Korean government made the

deportation decision so early and whether it should have allowed the North Koreans to go through a South Korean judicial process first.

Lee said Seoul determined the two’s acceptance into South Korean society would threaten public safety.

North Korean fishing boats have occasionally drifted into South Korean waters, and South Korea has usually accepted those who chose to resettle and repatriated others who wished to return home.

Ties have been strained between the two Koreas as the North ramps up pressure on the United States to make concessions in deadlocked nuclear diplomacy.

Trump fined for misusing charity AP A judge has ordered President Donald Trump to pay $US2 million to an array of charities as a fine for misusing his own charitable foundation to further his political and business interests.

New York state Judge Saliann Scarpulla imposed the penalty after the president admitted to a series of abuses outlined in a lawsuit brought against him last year by the New York attorney general’s office.

Among other things, Trump acknowledged in a legal filing that he allowed his presidential campaign staff to co-ordinate with the Trump Foundation in holding a fundraiser for veterans during the run-up to the 2016 Iowa caucuses. The event was designed “to further Mr. Trump’s political campaign,” Scarpulla said.

In a defiant statement, though, Trump suggested he was neither sorry nor in the wrong.

He assailed a series of Democratic attorneys general of New York who were involved with the suit, saying they should have spent their time investigating the Clinton Foundation.

Trump’s foundation will be dissolved and its $1.7 million in remaining funds will be given to other nonprofits, under agreements reached by Trump’s lawyers and the attorney general’s office.

As part of those agreements, made public Thursday, the two sides left it up to the judge to decide what penalty Trump should pay.

The settlement was an aboutface for Trump. He had tweeted, “I won’t settle this case!” when it was filed in June 2018.

Trump’s fine and the charity’s funds will be split evenly among eight organisations, including Citymeals on Wheels, the United Negro College Fund and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Attorney General Letitia James welcomed the resolution of the case as a “major victory in our efforts to protect charitable assets and hold accountable those who would abuse charities for personal gain”.

The president admitted, among other things, to arranging for the charity to pay $10,000 for a 2-metre portrait of him. He also agreed to pay back $11,525 in foundation funds that he spent on sports

memorabilia and champagne at a charity gala.

Trump also accepted restrictions on his involvement in other charitable organisations.

His three eldest children, who were members of the foundation’s board, must undergo mandatory training on the duties of those who run charities.

Charities are barred from getting involved in political campaigns, but in weighing the Iowa fundraiser, Scarpulla gave Trump credit for making good on his pledge to give $2.8 million that his charity raised to veterans’ organisations.

Instead of fining him that amount, as the attorney general’s office wanted, the judge trimmed it to $2 million and rejected a demand for punitive damages and interest.

At the time of the Iowa fundraiser, Trump was feuding with then-Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and refusing to participate in the network’s final Republican presidential primary debate before the Iowa caucuses.

Instead, he held a rally at the same time as the debate at which he called on people to donate to veterans’ charities. The foundation acted as a

pass-through for those contributions.

James said the evidence of banned co-ordination between campaign officials and the foundation included emails exchanged with then-Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.

In one email, a Trump company vice president asked Lewandowski for guidance on precisely how to distribute the money raised.

Trump also admitted in the agreements to directing that $100,000 in foundation money be used to settle legal claims over a 25-metre flagpole he had built at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, instead of paying the expense out of his own pocket.

In addition, the foundation paid $158,000 to resolve a lawsuit over a prize for a hole-inone contest at a Trump-owned golf course, and $5000 for ads promoting Trump’s hotels in the programmes for charitable events. Trump admitted these transactions were also improper.

As part of the settlement, Donald Trump Jr reimbursed the Trump Foundation for the cost of the portrait.

Most ships would be in Milford Sound for two to three hours but they were highly visible.

“The challenge for regulators is to get ahead of it. All we want from regulators is plenty of notice so we can deliver on what we promise.”

Cruises are booked further ahead than most holidays.

He said discharge coming from funnels was often steam from “scrubbing” sulphur rather than smoke, but had sparked concern.

“The scrubbers can generate white steam so they’re a more visible emission even though it’s sulphur-free. That is curious to onlookers which is part of the drive in Milford to keep it to two ships a day.”

Scrubbing involves spraying emissions with sea water and an agent that combines with the sulphur, which is heavier than the smoke and falls to the bottom of the funnel. Some cruise ships have

been targeted for discharging the resulting wash water in sensitive areas.

Smith said while he couldn’t speak for other companies, Royal Caribbean had a closed system which meant the water was disposed of in port at a discharge facility, although it was sometimes released into the open ocean.

“There is sulphur in sea water so that itself is not a problem, it’s releasing it in port where we haven’t got a strong tidal or wave action.”

This summer a growing number of ships will make more than 1000 port calls around the country, with 370,000 passengers on board — up 13 per cent on last season.

Smith acknowledged the whole cruise sector was under more scrutiny from those worried about the environmental impact of ships and the affect of big ships in particular on small communities or very popular tourist spots.

Already Venice has barred ships from entering its historic centre and there is discussion of “cruise shame’’ along the same lines as the flight shaming movement.

Cruise ship crackdown in Fiordland Cruise ships face new restrictions in Fiordland this summer because of concerns about their impact on some of this country’s most beautiful spots.

The operator of the biggest ships to visit New Zealand waters says the new rules mean cruise lines will have to work with each other to stagger arrivals in places such as Milford Sound.

Environment Southland has imposed the limit — two ships in any waterway, passage, fjord, bay or inlet — because of fears that the growth of cruising will be unsustainable.

This summer 132 cruise ships are expected to visit southern New Zealand.

“It is clear that unrestrained growth of the cruise ship industry in Fiordland is unsustainable,” said director of policy, planning and regulatory service, Vin Smith.

“We anticipate the limit will help to protect Fiordland’s outstanding natural character and landscapes, which have intrinsic and cultural value, as well as being part of why both New Zealanders and international tourists want to visit.”

Royal Caribbean is bringing back one of the world’s biggest ships, the 347m long Ovation of the Seas, this summer and it will include visits to the fjords.

The company’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Gavin Smith, said it was working with regulators and governments around the world to prove it was a responsible operator.

He said the new rules shouldn’t affect operations too much as there were not often three or more vessels in the one area at the same time.

A private tutoring company has hired former Prime Minister Sir John Key for its board and unveiled ambitious plans for a global online high school.

Key will follow his son Max Key into the company, Crimson Consulting, where Max worked from 2015 until 2017, helping students get into top American universities through excellence in sports.

Company founder Jamie Beaton, 24, said the former Prime Minister would be an “advisory member” of the company’s board.

He has also announced that the company will start a “highly selective” online Crimson Global Academy in February, targeting several hundred students studying towards Cambridge exams, NZ Scholarships or entry tests for American universities.

Like most domains and reserves, the Tinwald Domain runs on the goodwill of volunteers, the people elected to its board to make the tough decisions, to find the cash and to oversee developments. Tinwald’s board chair Alistair Wing is stepping down from leading the domain team and talks to reporter Sue Newman about his love for those green spaces.

or 24 years the Tinwald Domain has been Alistair Wing’s second home.

He feels a certain sense of ownership of the sprawling 96 hectare site and that’s come through watching it weather good times and bad, fighting in its corner when money was needed for development projects and being its number one champion as the district’s unsung recreational treasure.

But later this month, Alistair and the Tinwald Domain will be cutting ties when he steps down as domain board chairman after 24 years in the job. It’s time, he says, to hand over the reins, to let someone else worry about what needs to be done and where the money will come from.

Like many volunteer positions that often become jobs for life, Alistair had his arm twisted to join the board. At his first meeting he found himself in the chairman’s seat, and accepted the position believing it would be a short-term tenure.

He’s not alone in chalking up an impressive record of board service – Robin Kilworth has also served 24 years, Paul Hefford, 21 and Bev Walls and John Howe 18 years each. They’ve formed a tight team.

“You get a really good group like this and then what you’re doing becomes a team approach,” he said.

Over those 24 years, the board and the domain have come a long way.

“At that first meeting we talked about how many toilet rolls we’d buy; now it’s high level stuff.”

Back then the domain was essentially the same as it is today – stately trees, a picturesque pond, a swimming pool, playground and tennis courts. Many of its trees date back to the late 1800s and experts believe two bluegum trees are the oldest standing in the district.

For the board one of the biggest achievements over the past decade or so has been the completion of a development plan that would ensure the needs of both current and future users were met in a way that would see like activities concentrated in specific areas so the integrity of the area as a recreational green space was not compromised, Alistair said.

While those 24 years have seen considerable change in the domain, achieving that change hasn’t always been easy, he said.

“I don’t think some of the council staff and councillors have always appreciated the work that goes into this by volunteers, into any domain or reserve. Look at the small domains like Mayfield, Hinds and Rakaia, their volunteers do so much work.”

Keeping communities ticking was all about people pitching in and helping, but he believes the volunteers running reserves and domains around the district are often overlooked.

“You don’t do this to pat yourself on the back, you do it for your community and with things like the council it shouldn’t be about us and them, it’s about everyone doing a bit so the community wins.”

Getting things done was all about team work and that’s how the Tinwald Domain Board

worked, Alistair said.

Change has been ongoing, sometimes almost unnoticed at the domain, he said.

One of the early jobs the board did during Alistair’s tenure was to rebuild the bridge to the pond’s island. The old wooden one might have been picturesque but it was a health and safety nightmare, he said.

Today the island is easily accessed and is a popular place for weddings.

Of all the projects undertaken, the relocation and ongoing development of the domain camping ground has been one of the most significant, he said.

Initially it was a small area on the edge of the domain proper with 15 or so power sites, a space that was not well used. That’s all changed.

“It’s grown phenomenally over the years and it’s had a lot of upgrading,” Alistair said.

Today the relocated camping ground can cater for hundreds. A new accommodation lodge has been built, it has become one of the South Island’s camping hot-spots and there’s plenty of room to grow.

The board has also been the driver in revitalising the domain swimming pool. Originally it was run by the Tinwald Swimming Club. That went into recess and it became the domain board’s job to keep the pool in business, a difficult and expensive job, he said.

Huge amounts of money have been spent installing solar heating and heat pumps, improving the pools themselves and on extensive landscaping.

treasure “We spent a lot of money but we’ve now got a wonderful facility,” he said.

Running the pool complex has now been handed over to staff at the EA Networks Centre and that was a handing over Alistair was very happy to make.

Today the Tinwald Domain is very well used, with several areas leased for specific use. The board’s role is to manage the entire area and to make the big calls on how it develops in the future.

“Having this development plan was a good move. It’s got lots of good ideas, not all will come

to fruition, but we’re in a good place now,” Alistair said.

Several of its areas are leased to other organisations – the Plains areas, the golf course and pony club. They’re all good tenants and they provide a steady income, but money is always needed, he said.

The new lodge came with a $1 million loan from the council, but unlike the Ashburton Domain, Tinwald does not have a specific rating category.

It relies on grants, donations, income from leases and from the camping ground.

The development plan still identifies areas where future work can be done – an area for events and this will happen in time, Alistair said, but that’s work for a board led by a new chairman.

He might be signing off from the board, but he’ll still be taking a keen interest in the domain and its future development.

It’s very much a place of the heart for many people with memories often stretching back several generations. And it’s been part of the district since 1878 when 96 hectares of land was given to the Ashburton County Council as a reserve.

The numbers really don’t lie W

hat’s in a number? It would seem there might be plenty.

We tend to work in numbers in life, it’s all about the end mark.

Whether it be money in the bank in home or business life, numbers of people through the doors in your shop, or in our case the number of people reading our news.

It’s a long standing argument in this office about just how far we actually reach and how many of your sets of eyes are scanning through our pages six days a week.

No one really could put a definitive answer on it either way and while we still haven’t quite got to the point where we can stand up and say how many peo-

ple are reading the Ashburton Guardian each day, we now have a rough idea.

Wanting to better understand the habits of our readers and subscribers we took to the Ashburton A&P Show last weekend to see if we could find a few things out about you, our readers.

It was nothing more than a simple fact-finding mission for

our own interests and we were pretty surprised by what we found out at the end of the two days.

During the two days, 427 subscribers came through the tent and answered the all important question of how many people read their issue of our newspaper each day.

One, two, three or four or more were the possible answers.

The numbers didn’t probably surprise us too much, 58.7 per cent of you said that two people read the paper every day – more surprising to us was that only 6.5 per cent said one person.

Of those who shared their paper around three sets of eyes there were 24.9 per cent and 9.9 per cent let four or more people

read their edition each day.

Newspapers are all about circulation and how many copies are being printed and distributed. It’s the key selling point to a client, advertiser or someone wanting to get information out into the public arena.

Personally, I put far more emphasis on readership – the more people reading something means that more people are informed and therefore your news is being read by as many people as possible.

It might sound silly, but I’m really heartened to hear so many more people than what face value might suggest are reading what we’re producing.

Obviously we’d want every person in this district to lay their

eyes on a newspaper of ours six days a week but that’s not really possible, so anything we can get is a good result.

Through the Guardian, Dairy Focus, Guardian Farming, YOU Magazine, our website, the Ashburton App and our social media channels we are now reaching more Mid Cantabrians and bringing them the news that matters to them than ever before.

And that, at the end of the day, is all we want.

We want to bring news to the people of this district as often and as timely as we can.

It’s why we come in here each day and put pen to paper and fingers to keyboards.

And we love doing it.

So, thanks for coming along.

History shaping our children’s future B

eing involved in various heritage museum projects over the years has demonstrated some rewarding outcomes.

A lifelong passion for “old stuff” and the stories behind it have always been a fascination.

But Labour weekend duty over at The Fire Museum at The Plains opened my eyes to the career opportunities showing off this old gear can generate.

And it made me reflect on the various ways different heritage attractions have influenced the generations.

For example, I know of several instances (there will be many others) where youngsters have attended Warbirds Over Wanaka some time over the past three decades, been totally inspired, and are now flying with various airlines, or flying choppers commercially, while others have taken up flying with the military.

One Ashburton woman I can think of has attained great heights in a military career across the pond, having her interest sparked by attending such

airshow events. She’s currently flying huge air-to-air refuelling aircraft. Way to go Anna.

So back at the fire museum and one of the great unexpected joys has been the raw enthusiasm displayed by youngsters of both genders, dressing up in firefighter gear and exploring the big red trucks.

Once the gear goes on they are totally into it.

Kids these days often stun us with their knowledge and it’s not uncommon to hear them explain back to us how the various things work.

One young fella with his eye on the old radio comms and siren set up on the dash panel, asked all sorts of questions

about different modes the gear offered. “Will it work in YELP?” But one little dude visiting with mum and dad was clearly into all this at a level even the others couldn’t match. At just two-and-a-half years of age, he was utterly and totally absorbed with the big old International fire truck.

His folks say all he talks about is fighting fires and if he’s in a playground with skipping ropes, he turns the rope into his fire hose and goes around dampening imaginary hotspots.

In the supermarket, anywhere, he’s not fussy about locations, he’s always in firefighter mode.

What is also interesting is that he shows a great interest in shows on TV with paramedics and ambulances as well. His dad Shane reckons he’s just got this thing where he wants to help people. He wants to protect them. Fight the fire. Heal the hurt.

That is a noble ambition for anyone, but at two and a half?

So don’t be surprised in 18 or so years if one Zachary Walton is

lining up to become part of the volunteer FENZ crew in Ashburton.

Or perhaps he might set his sights on a professional career in New Zealand’s emergency services.

If displays like the collection at the Ashburton Fire Museum motivate and inspire young visitors to go on and later serve their communities then the whole reason behind them is even more special.

And with displays reinforcing fire safety messages as well, the whole thing really steps up.

Here’s me thinking for all these years it’s all about collecting and displaying old stuff.

Turns out, it’s just as much about inspiring our young.

QUICK RECIPE

■■ Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a small frypan on a medium heat. Toast pumpkin seeds, keeping them moving, until puffed up and slightly coloured – about 5 minutes. Drain on a paper towel and sprinkle with salt.

■■ In a large bowl, whisk three tablespoons of olive oil with the citrus juices. Add the beetroot and apples and 3/4 of the seeds. Toss well.

■■ Top with the remaining seeds and coriander to serve.

From one blue to another For local cop Georgia Clarke her summer is going to be spent swapping out blue uniforms, her work uniform and her Otago Sparks uniform.

Clarke is getting ready for her fourth season with the Dunedin-based team after missing out on last season through injury and attending Police College.

“In February (2018) I picked up a stress fracture in my back which put me out and then I re-injured it but found out I was going to Police College and I had to put my study first,” she said.

Clarke graduated, and started with the Ashburton Police on March 15, the same

day at the Christchurch terror attack.

The bowler is one of nine Sparks players to be awarded a women’s domestic playing contract for the season, a new contract which is a feature of the Women’s Master Agreement announced in September that provides players with financial support to reimburse them for the preparation and playing time during a busy summer schedule.

A busy summer is certainly on the cards, with three to four sessions of bowling practice in Ashburton each week with Mid Canterbury Cricket coach Garfield Charles, a trip to Christchurch once a week to work

Local cop Georgia Clarke will be pulling on the Otago Sparks strip once again this season, kicking off with a tournament in Levin next weekend.

with another coach and a bit of batting practice thrown in when she gets time.

Throw in travelling to games all over the country, it is a busy time for Clarke who is grateful her bosses at the police station are able to accommodate her busy schedule.

“The sergeants are really good at looking after my hours and getting me the time off, given I only started recently and didn’t have any annual leave,” she said.

“With shift work it can be pretty hard to train, as it is with all shift work.

“Sometimes after a night shift it is pretty tiring to get up and go train.”

While it might seem odd to be part of a

team in a different region of the country where she lives and works, Clarke said there are a number of players from outside of Otago in the team, including another from Canterbury.

“Just as long as you are doing your own practice it is okay,” she said.

A bowler in past years, Clarke has received a promotion up the batting order this season and is hoping to show her hand as more of an all-rounder this time in.

The Sparks get their campaign under way in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield against the champion Central Hinds on November 16.

Season celebrated

Rugby supremacy was celebrated at the Hotel Ashburton last night with the annual Mid Canterbury Rugby Awards held in front of a big crowd of attendees.

After a tough season on the paddock, especially for the Mid Canterbury Heartland Rugby side, the night was about celebrating the excellent achievements across all facets of the game last night with no particular club or player staking a claim to dominating the night’s proceedings.

Jackson Donlan, who reached 50 matches in the green and gold early in the representative season was named the Heartland Player of the Year, picking up the Morgan Trophy for his efforts.

Southern coach, Andrew Carr, was named Mid Canterbury Coach of the Year, claiming the Neville Goodwin Memorial Trophy, which is presented for the outstanding individual coaching performance within the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union for his efforts in helping Southern to the Combined Country Rugby Final, which they drew the final with Glenmark Cheviot.

Carr and Geoff Frew were also awarded the Open Grade Coach of the Year title.

Hampstead’s Jim Henderson was awarded Philip McDonald Cup for volunteer services to the game and the Mid Canterbury Referee of the Year was Kalifa Faalogo, who claimed the Ant McGirr Trophy.

Methven was awarded the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union Club of the Year.

Darion Gray was awarded the Dianne McGirr Memorial Trophy for Women in Rugby.

As well as winning the overall player of the year title, Donlan also claimed Heartland Players Player of the Year – the Dave Thomas Cup. Tyler Blackburn picked up the Best Team Man and Back of the Year, while Sorby Sovea was Forward of the Year.

Open grade club rugby awards went to Jake Wills from Allenton, who won the Body Cup for best open grade captain, the Methven senior side who won the Heartland Bank Positive Play Award, Southern seniors picked up the Roy Smith Memorial for best conduct and dress and the MB Roulston Cup for most points in senior rugby went to Jon Dampney.

‘Please explain’ The Wallabies are set to face a gruelling review following their early exit from the Rugby World Cup. Rugby Australia announced that the comprehensive review will take place over the next month, which will involve interviewing all test players and staff.

The review, which will encompass the failed World Cup campaign as well as other internationals, will be headed by a three-person panel comprising of former Wallaby and cricket administrator Pat Howard, four-time Olympic rower Bo Hanson and Wallabies great Nathan Sharpe.

Rugby Australia director Scott Johnson will also work alongside the panel.

RA chief executive Raelene Castle says the panel will offer a “well-rounded perspective” on the state of the game in Australia. “[They] will offer significant expertise and experience from both within and outside the sport. Having these three individuals leading the process will provide a well-rounded perspective on the Wallabies and enable us to take forward key learnings for delivery into the major tournament preparations of all of our national teams over the next four-year cycle.”

Southern to hammer it home

Southern hold all the aces up their sleeve heading into the penultimate day of round one in the Mid Canterbury Open Grade Tennis competition today.

With a five-point lead on the points ladder courtesy of an unbeaten run to start the season, a victory over their rivals Allenton at the Ashburton Trust Mid Canterbury Tennis Centre today would give them an unassailable lead before the completion of the first round.

But, nothing is ever a certainty in tennis.

Allenton are yet to get a win on the board, but boast a line-up who on any given day could test even the sternest of rivals – and perhaps that might be today.

Southern, on the other hand, present a consistently good line-up of players who step out onto the court each week and just get the job done.

Today’s play has been brought forward to commence from 11am to

allow play to be finished in time for the Canterbury Premier Tennis competition to step onto the courts for their annual visit to the district in the afternoon.

In other matches away from the big clash for Southern, Hampstead get a chance to keep in touch with Southern if they can overcome Dorie.

Second on the points table, a convincing victory today could push them to within reaching distance, especially if Southern falter in any way.

Dorie have one win to show for their efforts so far in the season, but have a good player base who could step up and produce some strong results making the match-up the most intriguing of the weekend.

In today’s other match, Methven and Fairton will lock horns with Fairton just behind the lead pair on the points ladder and Methven down near the bottom, with just the one win to show for their three appearances thus far.

Time to curb the excesses, agents told AP FIFA has told soccer’s biggest agents, who are resisting limits to their cut of player deals, that there is a need to “curb the excesses” of the $7 billion annual transfer market.

Agent earnings from transfers would be capped at a maximum 10 per cent of fees when acting for the selling club under changes approved by the FIFA Council that are due to be introduced from 2021.

Agents Mino Raiola, Jonathan Barnett and Roger Wittmann,

who have brokered some of the game’s biggest deals in recent years, complained to FIFA they were not consulted and that the new regulations would be “anti-competitive and unlawful”.

FIFA officials responded in writing to the agents this week, saying there was an “extensive consultation process with all the main stakeholders,” including agents as a well as “robust research”.

In correspondence seen by The Associated Press, FIFA told the agents “the cap on fees is just one element” of reforms intended to “protect the integrity of the sys-

New-look cricket under way

No chance of any complacency in the camp

Mid Canterbury’s new-look T18 cricket competition got under way on Wednesday night, with all four matches being played despite some threatening weather.

Introduced to fill the void with no Saturday afternoon senior competition, the tournament has been reasonably well received with eight sides competing.

Three are from Allenton, two from Coldstream and one each from Methven, Lauriston and returning club, Rakaia.

Played around the district on a Wednesday evening, the tournament is hoped to attract players to a more relaxed and less time-demanding form of cricket, which is all done in a few hours and during the week.

Not all full match results were available to the Guardian in time for yesterday’s deadlines, but from those that were it appears as though Allenton will have a strong hand in the competition with all three of their sides winning.

The Progressive Livestock Allenton side picked up a resounding win over the Coldtream Kings by 34 runs.

Batting first, they amassed an impressive 158-5 off their 18 overs, spearheaded by an impressive 36 from Ranvy Pannu.

Richard Print was the best of the Coldstream bowlers, claiming two scalps in his four-over stint.

PHOTO ERIN TASKER 061119-ET-0050 In reply, Coldstream made a number of good starts with the bat, including a solid 36 from the bat of N. Jakhar, who hit four fours and two sixes, but ultimately the run chase proved futile and they ran out of time.

The Allenton Wanderers also were in good form, comfortably beating Lauriston.

Allenton notched up 116 for four from their 18 overs, while Lauriston managed to get through to 73-6 before their overs ran out.

Out in Methven, the locals made a strong start with a six-wicket victory over their Rakaia neighbours on the artificial wicket at the Methven Domain.

Rakaia took the bat first in a reduced game which was played at 15 overs each.

It wasn’t a happy return for the Rakaia side though, as they were rolled for a paltry 61 inside 13 overs.

Riley Wilson was Methven’s main destroyer, claiming three

wickets for 12 runs off his three overs with the ball in hand.

In reply, Methven lost wickets, but reached the target in the 10th over with four batsmen back in the shed.

Sam Clark led the way with a strong 45 – scoring more than two-thirds of the runs in his side’s run chase.

The fourth match of the round was between The Phat Duck Allenton and Coldstream Old Boys with Allenton emerging the victors.

The hunt for the next All Blacks coach

T

he contest for the All Black coaching position has dominated, as it should, rugby news this

week.

Having watched a few battles for the job over the years, here are a few truths I believe to be self-evident.

There have been some fanciful dream teams bandied about for the All Black coaching squad.

Ian Foster and Scott Robertson in tandem, or Robertson with Dave Rennie, and maybe Tony Brown.

The reality is that the days of NZ Rugby mixing and matching several talented coaches together the way you’d pick lollies from an Air New Zealand in-flight basket died and were buried in 2007, when Graham Henry was re-instated as coach despite the All Blacks’ embarrassing departure after the quarter-finals at that year’s World Cup. Public feeling was almost universally in favour of appointing Robbie Deans, but an NZRU sub-committee, and then the full board, selected Henry, who presented himself as part of a team with Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith.

In 2013 Mike Eagle, who

chaired the panel that first talked to Henry and Deans, told me that when asked who his assistants would be Deans said he planned to approach Pat Lam and Vern Cotter but had yet to do so.

“The main reason by far for Graham getting the nod”, said Eagle, “was that here was a group of guys, all international coaches, who, yes had lost at the World Cup, but still had very good credentials. And over here is Deans and his coaching group, Question Mark, and Question Mark.”

The startling success in the next four years of what was, in 2007, a hugely unpopular decision to retain the Henry coaching team has set in stone the pattern for future coaching selections.

Whoever is now finally appointed for 2020 onwards will be the man who can present with a full, impressive, lineup of assistants. The lone wolf days are gone forever.

Tony Brown announcing, as a good southern man from Kaitangata always should, that he’d stick with an old mate, in this case Jamie Joseph, when the time for selecting the new All Black coach rolled around – and therefore wouldn’t look to join the teams around Ian Foster or Scott Robertson – set off a remarkable

media feeding frenzy.

Suddenly Joseph, with Brown on board, was apparently the hot favourite for the job. Maybe Joseph is, and his record with Japan certainly deserves huge respect.

But maybe a deep breath would be a good idea too.

The trick, as it always will be when comparing coaches, is whether taking a team with limited player resources and having them play better than expected, is more impressive than having a great player roster, and having the success most would feel was due anyway.

There have been some commentators wondering who Mike Anthony, the head of high performance at New Zealand Rugby, is, and why he’s on the panel to vet candidates for the All Blacks coaching job.

For a start he’s been with NZR since 2008 – first as high performance sports science manager, then player development manager since 2011, and has been in his current role since last year.

But if that resume hints of a grey, corporate man, think again.

He was the fitness and conditioning expert at the Crusaders from 1996 to 2001, and again in 2003, when he became known, and slightly feared, as Motsy, which

stood for the Mouth of the South.

It probably wouldn’t now pay to try to fob him off with meaningless words in an interview room.

A story Todd Blackadder told me illustrates how you didn’t mess with Motsy. In the 2000 Crusaders’ squad as a fulltime member for the first time was Ron Cribb, unwanted by the Blues.

Cribb came from North Harbour, where the culture, Frank Bunce once explained, was so casual that “if we dropped every guy who was late for training from the next game, you’d be lucky to have anyone on the field”.

So when Big Ron strolled into his first gym session in Christchurch with Anthony, a fitness fanatic who regularly competed in the Coast to Coast, and detested lateness, the local players waited for the fun. They weren’t disappointed.

Cribb was verbally pinned to the wall, and lashed with words until he was reeling.

“The poor bugger was like someone caught in the path of a hurricane”, recalled Blackadder.

There was an upside.

Cribb was never late again, and his fitness and form all season was so outstanding, he made the All Blacks.

Complacency will be a word Mid Canterbury cricket side, Tech Stags, want to avoid this weekend as they head into the fifth round of the Canterbury Country Cricket competition today.

Unbeaten in four matches thus far, the Technical side have already declared themselves as the side to beat in their first look into cricket on the other side of the Rakaia River.

“They’ll be hoping to carry that form right through to the Christmas break to put themselves in a position to really launch once the 2020 half of the season begins.

With no real certainty on just how they would compete against new teams with no real known quantities, it’s been a pleasing month for the local lads.

They have asserted their dominance on the pitch, including a dominant 10-wicket victory over Greendale last weekend in which they were set just 35 to chase down.

Spearheaded by some experienced cricketing heads like Bevan Richan, Jason Morrison and Bevan Ravenscroft, Tech have been able to dominate sides through either the bat or the ball when required.

Their match today at the Greendale Domain should, on paper, produce another positive result.

Greendale managed to roll Mid Canterbury’s other side in the competition, Allenton last weekend but other than that haven’t been able to yelp a victory.

So, Tech should win.

But it would only take a firedup Greendale to really rattle some cages and things could be very different.

Allenton will head to the beautiful setting of the Tai Tapu Domain today to take on the Peninsula-Harbour boys in what shapes up as an interesting match.

The all-Indian Allenton side have shown they’ve got the skillset to foot it with any team in the competition but some inconsistencies in their performances are letting them down.

They’ll be hoping to put it all together again today and grab another victory, away from home and keep within reaching distance of Tech.

Again it will likely come down to the likes of Ranpreet Singh, Mana Singh and Satveer Singh who have been the linchpins of the side but a good diet of cricket, with most involved in the mid-week T18 competition, is likely to have really blown out any lingering cobwebs for the side.

Next wave set to emerge

The next wave of Ashburton Rowing Club members will get the chance to further their experience and potentially make a mark on the South Island rowing scene on home waters this weekend in the Clarke Boyce Pennant on Lake Hood.

The first big club regatta of the season, run by Canterbury Rowing, the Clarke Boyce is a good yardstick to kick off proceedings for the season and gives the perfect opportunity for clubs to put their off-season training programmes into practice on the water in a competitive nature.

And for the local squad, it’s a case of continuing to introduce a plethora of new and first-season rowers to the big time of the rowing world.

Ashburton Rowing Club coach, Justin Wall, said it was always exciting to arrive at this time of the year and after a number of seasons of good success the hope was that it could be continued in the new season even with so many new faces.

“We’ve got a lot of new novice risers who are first year rowers,” he said.

“That’s thanks largely to the open days we held last season.

“Last weekend we had 28 head to the Aoraki championships, with skill and experience ranging from novices through to the masters grade.”

Ashburton rowers claimed five A Final wins at last weekend’s regatta and probably would have picked up more had the regatta not being cancelled before completion due to conditions.

under 17 single sculls, finishing second in his heat and leaving something in reserve for the final which he won impressively.

He was also a part of the men’s 50 per cent novice coxed quad sculls, alongside Tim Connel-

ly-Whyte, Parker Bradford, Patrick Dekker and Harriet Leverton.

The men’s 50 per cent novice coxed four of Michael Wall, Grant Elvines, Mitchell Taylor, Henry Wallis and Leverton were also first past the post in their A Final.

Michael Wall and Grant Elvines went a step further too and claimed first placing in the men’s masters double sculls while Mollie Gibson and Meagan Binnie claimed first in the women’s 50 per cent novice double sculls to

round out a successful day with a number of other placings in A finals as well.

Racing for today’s Clarke Boyce Pennant begins at Lake Hood at 8am and will run through most of the day.

■■CYCLING

Vink on the charge in southern tour Defending champion Michael Vink has put himself within grasp of a second SBS Bank Tour of Southland title after a stunning ride by his Placemakers team on the penultimate day of the race’s 63rd edition.

Starting the 151km stage from Invercargill to Gore in third place, trailing Mexican rider Eder Frayre by 47sec, Vink needed something special – and he found it just north of Drummond.

The team’s plan, hatched the night before, involved getting a rider into the early break and then putting the hammer down before Winton to try and isolate Frayre and his Kia Motors-Ascot Park Hotel team.

In fact, it was even better than that, with James Harvey and Hamish Keast making the first selection.

When Vink and the rest of the Placemakers team were able to escape, they sat up and helped

charge to the front of the race.

As strong as Frayre has been for the past two days, winning both the Coronet Peak and Bluff Hill climbs, he and the second-placed Corbin Strong (Team Skoda Fruzio) were helpless to respond.

“We had a plan and it came off perfectly, and that’s thanks to all the boys in the team.

“They did their job to perfection, and we were rewarded for it in the end, so that’s a very satisfying way to win,” Vink said.

“It’s definitely one of the (stages) I’ll always remember.

“I think what we did today was one of the epic rides of the tour, certainly one I’ll remember for a long time.

“It’s nice to know that we can do it like that.”

Kia Motors-Ascot Park Hotel received some solace with Nick White claiming the stage win, with PowerNet’s Hamish Schreurs taking Most Combative honours.

Vink leads by just over two minutes, with Frayre dropping to seventh place at 6min 34sec.

No rider has been able to defend their Tour of Southland title since Ashburton’s Hayden Roulston won three times in succession between 2006 and 2008.

Vink is a noted time trialer and won’t be scared of today’s 13km individual time trial at Winton, but he well knows that he has let the race slip with a greater margin on the final day.

The afternoon’s final stage is a nervous 77km beat from Winton to the finish in Invercargill’s Gala St. “I’ll be riding as hard as I can.

“It gives me confidence knowing how things went today. I definitely know I’ve got good legs and having won the time trial in the past is a huge moral boost,” Vink said.

“You never know what can happen on that last stage, so you

have to take all the seconds you can get and we will definitely be riding as hard as we can and keeping the other guys fresh because it will be a hard afternoon.”

With Strong missing the break, his team-mate Reuben Thompson holds a narrow advantage in the under 23 classification.

Southland’s Tom Sexton (Business South) effectively locked down the Sprint Ace classification, following up from a big day on Thursday to ensure he can’t be headed on the final day.

WIth only the Rakahouka climb remaining, Ollie Jones (PowerNet) has also banked the King of the Mountain jersey, but his teammate Paul Odlin will be jealously guarding the 47 second lead he has over Glenn Haden (Coupland’s Bakeries) in the over 35 Silver jersey.

PowerNet also has a comfortable lead in the team classification.

Big drive for ‘part-timer’

By Michael Guerin The world champion who barely drives says he won’t get nervous before Tuesday’s $750,000 New Zealand Trotting Cup. In fact, Mark Jones won’t even be at Addington for the first half of Cup day.

Jones has got the call to drive NSW pacer Our Uncle Sam in the great race, even though he had never sat behind him until Wednesday.

Our Uncle Sam, runner-up in both the Inter Dominion Final and Hunter Cup last season, is staying at Jones’ property with trainer Chris Frisby, whose son Anthony has been the regular driver.

But the Frisbys are part-timers, training their horses before they run their produce store in Bathurst, so they wanted somebody more experienced for the Cup. And Jones has plenty of experience, just not recently.

Remarkably for a man who burst on to the scene 20 years ago, set records and won the World Driving Championships in

2003, Jones rarely drives these days.

He has competed in just three races this season and won only six from 80 drives in New Zealand last year, a far cry from when he partnered 124 winners from 976 drives in 2008.

It is not that Jones’ services wouldn’t be in demand, he prefers training and also prefers winning.

And he thinks his best chance of winning is putting on drivers who are out there all the time.

“So I was a bit surprised to get the call up,” says the now 40-year-old.

“I thought they must have gone for the heavyweight option.

“But it will be great to be out there because it is the Cup after all and in some ways it will be easier to drive in because all the drivers out there will be good drivers, which is how it should be for all premier races.”

But even a rusty Jones won’t be getting too stirred up by a rare shot at harness racing’s holy grail.

“I won’t think about it too much.

“It will actually be the first till I’ve been to Cup Day in a few years because I usually watch it on TV. “You get to see more as well as the replays.

“I will take the horses in later so I actually will still watch the start of the day on television.”

Our Uncle Sam has had no luck in his two New Zealand starts at Ashburton and Kaikoura but the likely strong pace of the Cup should bring out the best in him and while he probably can’t win, his $100 fixed odds are some of the true overs in the race.

“He has actually impressed me more now I have sat behind him than he does to the eye in track work and I think he is in that bunch behind the big two.”

That big two are favourites Spankem and Thefixer, with Jones sure the latter is the horse to beat.

“I think he has more ways he can win than Spankem and he is a very good beginner so he is the one to beat.”

He got closest to him in Catalyst’s stunning Hawke’s Bay Guineas win and finished seven lengths in front of the remainder, including race rivals tomorrow in Aotea Lad and Sherwood Forest.

“The way he beat us in the Guineas at home maybe we can’t beat him because he has such high speed and is already a real professional.

“But it is still racing and things

happen. Horses cast a shoe, or have a problem raceday, or bad luck. Not that I wish that on any horse.

“So if they all perform as they can and it’s a level playing field maybe we can’t beat him but I’m happy with our horse and we are going to give it a crack.”

Callsign Mav, named from the movie Top Gun, has handled his first big trip away from home with ease, his weight yesterday of 502kgs the same as before he jumped on the float from Hastings to Christchurch.

He has natural early speed and the draw to use it but Bary isn’t going to fill jockey Craig Grylls’ head with any set plans.

“I’ll leave that to Craig. He knows the horse well and if we jump well from that draw we have options.

“But that doesn’t mean we have to lead or, if Catalyst leads, be putting the pressure on.

“The way the draws have worked out I thought us, Catalyst and Sherwood Forest would all be around about the first three or four and then Harlech would be the one who had to work or come wider.

“So that should put us in a place to be a challenger.”

The $500,000 Guineas shapes as a battle of the sons of past Guineas winners, with Catalyst and Harlech part of a renaissance this

spring for the 2005 winner of this race in Darci Brahma while Callsign Mav is a son of 2013 winner Atlante, who has sadly passed away after a promising start to his stallion career.

While Bary is realistic about his Guineas chances today he is more confident with his one-two punch in the $50,000 Pegasus Stakes with Hugo The Boss and Vinnie’s Volley.

“I really think Hugo The Boss can go close,” says Bary.

“He has a sub 56-second 1000m win to his name and has been crying out for a good track which he will get.

“So I’d rate him slightly ahead of Vinnie’s Volley even though I’d love to see her get the black type.”

Pitmans looking for a big week Father and son training duo Michael and Matthew Pitman will begin what will be a massive New Zealand Cup week at Riccarton today.

They have 16 horses entered for the first day of the carnival and they expect to feature prominently with a number of their runners.

The Riccarton trainers are looking forward to the resumption of Group One performer Sensei, who will contest the Listed Yesberg Insurance Service Pegasus Stakes (1000m) alongside stablemate Exemplar.

The Pitmans are happy with the progress of the five-year-old entire and they expect a bold showing from him.

“We gave him a decent spell and he came back into work in June and we have quietly built up his fitness,” Matthew Pitman said.

“We were really happy with the way he trialled a couple of weeks back and his work has been pretty exceptional since then.

“He will improve with the run, but freshup over 1000m he will be right in it.”

The son of Dream Ahead won the Listed Stewards Stakes Handicap (1200m) in last year’s carnival, but a wet forecast for Christchurch next week has the local trainers reassessing their plans.

“It was a race that we had targeted with him,” Pitman said.

“But with the wet track predicted on Wednesday, he might end up avoiding there.

“If that is the case then we will possibly target the stakes race at Dunedin (Listed Hazlett Stakes, 1200m) on Boxing Day with a view to having another crack at the Telegraph (Gr.1, 1200m) with him.”

Pitman will also have a pair of contenders who will be vying to dethrone star three-year-old Catalyst in the Gr.1 Al Bas-

ti Equiworld New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m).

He was pleased with Chuck A Luck and All About Magic’s placings in the Gr.3 War Decree Stakes (1600m) last start and he believes they are both a chance of featuring in the finish.

“We are really happy with them,” he said.

“They meet a very good one in Catalyst and all the northern raiders have come down.

“Both of their runs were exceptional the other day at Riccarton. All About Magic came from last and had to come around every horse and flew home late to finish third.

“She also gets that fillies weight relief in the race.

“If they can run up to that form then we expect them to be right in it.”

All going to plan after toay’s run, All About Magic will back-up a week later to contest the Gr.1 gavelhouse.com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m).

“We have had a lot of success in the past when backing horses up around Cup week,” Pitman said.

“We utilise all the things we have at hand, like the beach and pool, and our horses seem to back up no worries.”

While Pitman has a number of chances in stakes races, he is looking forward to watching a couple of their stablemates line-up on Saturday.

“Savvy Lad is another horse we have a massive opinion of,” he said. “He’s been under offer before, but as it has worked out we have still got the horse in our hands.

“He is a real Derby prospect. He is by Savabeel and I think the step up to 1400m will be ideal for him. We expect him to go close to winning on Saturday.”

About the role We are seeking a Trainee Cable Jointer who is highly motivated and committed to completing the National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer, Level 4). This is a full-time position where you will receive on the job training working alongside our experienced Cable Jointers.
