An Ashburton couple have been left about $4000 out of pocket after a real estate deal went wrong, but they couldn’t be happier.

The couple, who do not want to be named, were within three days of paying the deposit on a new home that was currently tenanted, but at the last minute decided to have it tested for methamphetamine contamination.

“We’d watched a TV story about a Christchurch couple who rented their home out for a year and they found out their tenant had been using meth in it.

That made us think, should we get this house tested?”

They called in an Ashburton P-tester, but were confident the results would be negative.

“A few days later the phone rang and this man said “that’s the best $179 you’ve ever spent.”

The couple were staggered to find the house did not just show a positive test for contamination, but the reading was very high. Their reaction was immediate. They called their agent and cancelled the deal.

“We were so lucky. There were just three days to go before we paid the deposit. But we’d paid for a LIM and we had lawyer’s fees so we’re between $3000 and $4000 out of pocket. What do you do with a LIM for a property you don’t

want?” the woman said.

They had a lucky escape, but the tenant did not. With methamphetamine contamination confirmed and the house designated uninhabitable, the tenant had to leave and look for alternative accommodation.

The couple are still finding it difficult to accept that an ordinary house in an ordinary street could have notched up such a chequered history.

“If we hadn’t seen that show, we would never have had the house tested, we’re just so lucky we did this,” she said.

Local students are healthy

Mid Canterbury children have healthy lunches despite a study showing a high percentage of schools nationally are situated near fast food outlets.

The study by University of Auckland researchers, which looked at the proximity and density of fast food, takeaway and convenience outlets around New Zealand schools in 2014, found that 60 per cent of urban schools were within 800 metres of places

selling unhealthy food. Most Mid Canterbury schools do not have this problem because they are in isolated rural settings but the ones near these outlets are making sure their children are healthy.

Tinwald School has a number of fast food outlets, a bakery, a small supermarket, a service station and a dairy within walking distance, but principal Peter Livingstone does not see this as a problem.

healthy food from these places before and after school, he said.

The only time there are problems is occasionally students bring lollies into school but these are confiscated and given back to the student at the end of the day with a warning not to bring them again.

Lunches are also monitored and both parents and students are spoken to if children are bringing unhealthy items of food to school, Mr Livingstone said.

Students and their families are

also educated on healthier lunch options.

Hampstead School acting principal Bryony Digby said while there are a couple of dairies nearby, students are discouraged from going to them before and after school.

Staff and students have a healthy attitude towards food and children are educated about what they should be eating, she said.

Methven Primary School is also near several fast food places and two supermarkets.

Principal Chris Murphy said they don’t normally have a problem with the fast food places because they are usually closed in the day and the students don’t seem to buy unhealthy food from the supermarkets.

Students can only buy healthy lunches through the school and tend only to bring suitable food from home, he said.

The study was published in the America Journal of Preventative Medicine at the end of last month.

I thought this would be a big city problem, but clearly it’s not. We saved ourselves thousands of dollars and a whole lot of heartache just by spending $179.”

The event was held at the Ashburton Domain following a 5km route to support the Heart Foundation’s Go Red for Women campaign to promote New Zealand women’s heart health. Other Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk were held around the country. Everyone involved in the walk got to take home a red tee-shirt designed by New Zealand artist Dick Frizzell.

Lismore duck shooter shot in hand The opening weekend of the duck shooting season started off badly for a Lismore man who was shot in the hand.

A St John spokesperson said a 36-year-old male was transported to Ashburton Hospital where he was then airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with a gunshot wound at 7.45am on Saturday morning.

The season went off without a hitch for hundreds of other Mid Cantabrians who have been out bagging their limit of ducks and enjoying the warm start to

the season. While most people around the country have been careful, there have also been several other incidents of gunshot wounds from duck shooting.

Fish & Game communications manager Don Rood said it’s disappointing to see the start of the season marred by these incidents around the country and safety needs to be paramount.

However, they must be viewed in the context of a unique event where nearly 30,000 turn out to hunt on just one day, Mr Rood said.

“But of course any incident is one too many.”

“We can only repeat our call for a single-minded focus on safety rules – from every single hunter out there,” he said.

“There is no shortage of safe hunting advice on our own and Mountain Safety Council websites, for example.”

The other incidents included a 55-year-old man who was hit in the eye with a shotgun pellet in the Tararua area and a 10-yearold New Plymouth boy who was shot in the foot.

Man arrested over alleged shooting A 36-year-old man has been arrested after an alleged shooting in Mangere which left a man fighting for his life.

The man was found by police early yesterday in the Rodney area and has been charged with

attempted murder. He is due to appear in the Manukau District Court today.

Police say the victim of the alleged shooting, Hemi Hingaia, 35, is in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin McNaughton said he hoped the arrest would be of some comfort to Mr Hingaia’s family and the wider Mangere community.

Focusing on mathematics

For the second year in a row Mayfield School will be using a special programme to help students who are having difficulty with mathematics.

Last year the school started using the Accelerating Learning in Mathematics (ALIM) programme which is used by schools to help develop students’ mathematics abilities.

Principal Richard Kidd said

this year they have decided to use the programme again but with two teachers taking two different groups of students who need a bit more help.

Having ALIM really helped the students because they were able to focus on the subject for four 45 minute sessions a week as well as having their usual mathematics classes.

“It’s very intense, it’s a really good maths programme.”

This year the focus is also on

trying to engage families more to help them help their children from home, by using different exercises and apps.

As part of the programme they have also had a mathematics facilitator from the University of Canterbury to help the two teachers who are running the programme.

There are two groups of about 10 students in Years 3-7 who are participating in the programme this year.

It appears to be going very well so far and the children are getting a lot of use out of it, he said.

The ALIM programme is one of several interventions used by schools around the country to help teachers try new approaches to accelerate the mathematics of primary school students.

Teachers participating in the programme are supported to help small groups of students and then share that learning with their colleagues.

■ DUNEDIN

Attempted abduction A young woman had to fight her way free from an attempted abduction in Dunedin on Saturday.

Dunedin police said the 18-year-old was walking in Forth St at 4.25pm when she was grabbed by a back-seat passenger of a parked car who tried to pull her into the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle also tried to push the victim into the back seat, but the teenager managed to fight her way out of the car and was uninjured.

The vehicle was described as an older 1990s-type station wagon in a dirty condition with black roof racks.

It was parked on the lefthand side of Forth St facing north.

Dunedin Police are asking anyone with information about the incident, or who may have seen the car in Forth St, to phone them on (03) 471 4800.

Alternatively, anonymous information could be passed on to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Crime spree A crime spree in the early hours of Saturday has resulted in young offenders being referred to Youth Aid. The spree of offending occurred just after midnight, and included damage to property and vehicles, and burglary – including one Netherby shop which was broken into for the second time in just four days. Ashburton Police sergeant Janine Bowden said police had interviewed some of those responsible and they will be referred to the police youth aid section.

Light plane crash A woman has been injured in a light plane crash near Tauranga. The plane came to rest on the side of a hill on farmland about 2km along Waitao Rd, south of Papamoa Beach, resulting in a small fuel leak.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru said a 111 call came in about 3.34pm yesterday.

The Rotorua-based Baytrust Rescue Helicopter was also called to the scene.

Drunk driver An alleged drunk driver crashed into a home in Christchurch and caused considerable damage early yesterday. Emergency services were called to the scene on Marine Parade, New Brighton, at 4.40am. The 40-year-old driver blew 829mcg of alcohol per litre of breath and was charged with drink driving, Mr Williams said. - NZME

Firefighters have extinguished a large fire in South Auckland after a car crashed into a group of shops in Papatoetoe yesterday, exploding into flames. One person is dead after the car hit the shops on the corner of Portage and Station Rds about 4.30am. The crash ruptured a gas main, causing problems for firefighters battling to get the blaze under control while gas was leaking.

Crater Lake at record temps Scientists conducted an aerial observation over Mt Ruapehu’s Crater Lake yesterday, which remains steaming and bubbling at recordbreaking temperatures.

On Saturday, a tourist flight over the Crater Lake observed “vigorous steaming” at the lake and disturbance of the surface itself with “upwelling bubbles”.

This sort of activity had not been seen in years and Crown research institute GNS Science said a temperature of 44 degrees is “the hottest lake temperature we have recorded since the new lake was established post- 2000”.

A swarm of volcanic earthquakes reported last Tuesday had now stopped, but a seismic network at Ruapehu continues to record volcanic tremor.

GNS volcanologist Brad Scott has been closely monitoring activity overnight and said there had been an insignificant change in lake temperature of around 0.3 of a degree.

“There has been little to no change from yesterday – activity

has been dominated by volcanic tremors, with no distinct or individual volcanic earthquakes.”

An observation flight organised

by GNS yesterday found the lake was still steaming, as expected.

But the elevated temperatures did not necessarily mean an eruption was imminent.

“In fact, if you track back through the record, sometimes it has erupted from cold lake temperatures. This is what makes it difficult for us, as there’s no fixed pattern.

“In the end, it’s an active volcano and we should always pay respect to it.”

The developments weren’t sufficient enough to upgrade Mt Ruapehu’s Volcanic Alert Level, which remained at 1.

The last time it erupted was on September 25, 2007, causing a seven-minute-long earthquake, two lahars and flying rocks – one which crushed the leg of primary school teacher William Pike when it landed on Dome Shelter near the crater.

Sunshine makes for a tiring ride Hot temperatures and sunshine made for a nice but tiring ride at the Mid Canterbury Mountainbike Club’s annual six-hour relay yesterday. Hundreds of riders gathered at the Allenton Rugby Club for the ride which took them on a 10km relay course to the Ashburton Bridge and back. Individuals and teams took part in the event, which is in its fourth year and is part of the annual Wheels Week.

Weekend wheels events a big hit

The Ashburton Vintage Car Club’s annual Swap Meet was bigger and better than previous years with a crowd of more than 3000.

The meet, which was part of Wheels Week 2016, was just one of many popular events this weekend including a model show, rocker cover racing, mountain biking and a motokhana.

Ashburton Vintage Car Club Swap Meet organiser David Oakley said he was thrilled with the turnout of both the public and site holders at Saturday’s event.

More than 3000 people came from all over the country to view the goods on display and about 320 sites were sold to people from around the South Island.

“It would be one of the best we’ve had with a record attendance of the public and we were certainly right up there with the number of sites sold.”

to be dwindling, Mr Oakley said.

both played their part in attracting the crowds. The day was not just for vehicle enthusiasts with thousands of household items

Rod and Custom Club’s display and rocker cover racing which was held near the swap meet on Saturday.

Secretary Jason Gourlay said hundreds of people popped into the event on their way to and from the swap meet.

There were about 60 cars of all sorts of shapes and sizes on display with their owners coming from as far away as Christchurch and Oamaru.

“It’s great people made the effort to come here for it.

“It was really good, we were really happy with it.”

Numbers for the rocker cover racing were a bit disappointing this year with only seven entries, but everyone still enjoyed themselves, he said.

“It was quite a successful day with people wandering around.”

Hundreds also gathered for Tinwald School’s model show on both days, the Plains Vintage Railway & Historical Museum open day on Saturday, the Mid Canterbury Mountainbike Club’s six-hour ride and the Ashburton Car Club’s Motokhana at SprayMarks yesterday.

Body recovered from river Police divers have recovered the body of a man whose car plunged into the Waikato River on Saturday.

The search team found the body on Saturday night after arriving from Wellington around 8pm. They used lights to help with the recovery.

Emergency services were called to Riverbank Rd, Mercer, near Roose Rd in northern Waikato about 1.30pm after the car went into the river.

A passenger managed to escape from the car, and was helped to the shore by two Asian men. But the driver was unable to get out of the vehicle, which drifted about 150m before sinking.

Senior Sergeant Mark Chivers of Counties Manukau police said they wanted to hear from the two “good samaritans” who helped save the passenger.

Mr Chivers said it was too early to say what caused the car to crash into the river.

An earlier statement from police said officers had used a boat to help stabilise the car. The police serious crash unit will be investigating.

A man working at the local Mobil service station, Taylor Puru, said a man ran from the site of the accident to the forecourt looking for help.

“He asked this guy with a boat on his trailer to come over to the river. He was in a real rush.”

Mr Puru said he could see a lot of police cars and two ambulances, and a fire engine had been and gone.

Witnesses said they understood a woman had freed herself from the vehicle while the male driver was unable to.

Gun safety paramount

he opening day of the duck shooting season is a popular affair with more than 30,000 people around the country flocking to ponds, lakes, swamps and rivers.

For most, it is a time to get together with friends or family and partake in a hobby that has been passed down through the generations.

However, for some it becomes a tragic day, with injury or death marring the experience.

The duck-hunting season opens on the first Saturday of May each year and since 1992 there have been four deaths.

This may not seem like many but every death is a tragedy and when you take into account the number of injuries each year, three already this season, it adds up.

In our own neck of the woods, a Lismore man was shot in the hand.

Another man was shot in the eye in the Tararua District and a 10-year-old boy was shot in the foot in Taranaki.

Police and other authorities put out safety warnings each year reminding people to focus on gun safety but still people are being shot.

This isn’t good enough.

While three injuries out of 30,000 people taking part in the first day of duck shooting is only 0.01 per cent, those three injuries should not have happened.

Accidents will always happen and the risk is higher when there are thousands of eager men and women out on one day with a firearm, but this doesn’t make it alright.

Something more needs to be done because either the duck shooters are not listening to the safety messages or those messages are not strong enough to prevent further incidents.

Surely we can have a successful duck shooting season with decoy birds, duck callers, maimais and a delicious dinner and not have to rush our friends or family members to hospital.

Rural Support Trust always there to help W

ith continuing pressure on farming businesses this year due to lower dairy payments and dry conditions, it’s great that New Zealand’s Rural Support Trusts are there to offer support and advice.

Mid Canterbury has its own Rural Support Trust which works away quietly taking calls from farmers and farming families feeling the pressure.

Our local Trust is part of a nationwide network that directly assists rural communities and individuals affected by adverse events.

The Government supports the Rural Support Trusts with funding and have added an extra $150,000 to that funding this year.

During or after an adverse event, rural support trusts in affected areas may: • co-ordinate an initial response to an event or a longer term recovery effort.

• provide mentors or colleagues from rural backgrounds

to talk over problems.

• advocate for financial assistance.

• provide stress management services.

The Trusts provide tools, tips and case studies on how to survive and thrive in a low price season along with free, confidential support to rural communities through events like drought, floods and now economic challenges.

Our Rural Support Trusts are a great example of rural people helping rural people.

They can sit down around the kitchen table with families, providing good advice and pointing people in the right direction.

They help build social cohe-

sion in what can sometimes be a lonely profession.

Many rural people can be reluctant to ask for help, but they need to know there is support.

Rural Support Trusts have also been facilitating some social breaks away from the farm in recent months. Two of these opportunities are available in the Ashburton and Timaru area over the next few days.

On Thursday this week, the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust is offering local farmers and farming families a chance for a day away from the farm to enjoy some food, fun and fellowship this week.

The event, Rural Rucus, will be held at the Tinwald Hall, Ashburton from midday until 2pm.

The event includes a free barbecue and entertainment provided by well-known journalist, television presenter and character Jim Hopkins.

Opportunities like Rural Rucus and Rural Break give farming families a chance for some relaxation and a chance to mix and mingle with others.

Several other districts have also been holding off-farm events for farming families, offering some light relief from a difficult farming season.

Last month I was able to attend a similar day away from the farm in North Canterbury which featured a fun-filled and hilarious presentation from wellknown chef Annabelle White.

The event, “Refill Your Cup”, was attended by hundreds of farmers and their families from the area and proved a real hit.

Rural Support Trusts are there to help. I would really encourage anyone feeling a bit under the weather in their farming business to take a break and make the most of the opportunities rural support trusts offer.

Fears fire will grow Canadian officials fear a massive wildfire that has devastated the oil town of Fort McMurray in the western Canadian province of Alberta will double its size and reach the neighbouring province of Saskatchewan.

The “out-of-control” fire nicknamed “the beast” has destroyed 156,000 hectares of forest, Alberta’s Wildfire Manager Chad Morrison said at the weekend.

The blaze also has destroyed more than 1600 homes and buildings in and around Fort McMurray and forced nearly 90,000 people to evacuate the city.

The area it has burned is nearly twice the size of Berlin, and the fire could continue burning for weeks unless there is a heavy rain.

Morrison said firefighters expect “extreme fire behaviour” in forested areas as the fire continues to move away from Fort McMurray.

Fire crews continue to hold the line protecting the communi-

ties of Timberlea, Parsons Creek, Wood Buffalo and Thickwood, all located north of Fort McMurray’s downtown, which has remained largely intact, Morrison said.

They also have held the line protecting three communities south of the devastated oil town - Anzac, Fort McMurray First Nation and Lake Gregoire Estates that were evacuated on Wednesday night.

There have been no deaths in the fire, but two people fleeing the blaze died in a traffic accident on Tuesday. One of the dead was the 15-year-old daughter of a Fort McMurray firefighter.

Morrison said about 500 firefighters have been deployed in the area, with reinforcements arriving from the eastern Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.

Morrison said authorities expect the fire to continue moving away from the affected communities near Fort McMurray.

Pakistan to try 13 people for killing girl Thirteen members of a local tribal council who allegedly strangled a local girl and set her body on fire as punishment for helping one of her friends elope will face trial under anti-terrorism laws.

The body of 17-year-old Ambreen Riasat was found in a torched van near a tourist

resort in northwestern Pakistan on April 29.

Police say the tribal council ordered the killing.

Police officer Muhammad Tahir said yesterday the suspects are in the custody of counter-terrorism police.

Nearly 1000 women are killed every year in Pakistan in so-called honour killings in response to alleged romantic liaisons outside the bounds of arranged marriage.

The killings are often carried out by close male relatives.

31 missing after boat accidents off China Thirty-one people are missing after two fishing boats capsized and another went missing off China’s eastern coast, news reports say.

A boat with 19 on board sank at the weekend off the coast of Shandong province after a suspected collision with a Mal-

tese cargo ship, Xinhua news agency cited local authorities as saying.

Rescuers saved two crew members and were searching for the missing, Xinhua said.

Separately, the maritime search and rescue centre of the north-east city of Da-

lian said one fishing boat had lost contact while another that was missing for more than 50 hours was found capsized on Saturday.

No survivors were found from the ships, which were carrying six and eight crew members respectively.

Janet Jackson

Jackson reportedly pregnant Janet Jackson is reportedly pregnant with her first child. The 49-year-old singer - who will turn 50 on May 16 - is expecting her first child with husband Wissam Al Mana, according to Entertainment Tonight. The report of Janet’s pregnancy comes just one month after she postponed her world tour because she is “planning a family”. She said in a video message to fans: “Hey you guys, on August 31, I launched the Unbreakable world tour. We are in the second leg of the tour and there’s been a sudden change and I thought it was important you be the first to know. My husband and I are planning a family so I’m going to have to delay the tour.

Please, if you can, try and understand it’s important that I do this now, I have to rest up, doctors orders, but I have not forgotten about you, I will continue the tour as soon as I possibly can (sic).”

Top End an adventure playground for kids

Kakadu’s Nourlangie Rock has an abundance of aborigine rock art.

W

hen parents of young children plan family getaways, many yearn for happy, busy kids who allow their mum and dad a little downtime.

This often translates into a resort with a beach or pool, family-friendly dining, perhaps even a kids club.

With my three daughters now seven, four and nearly two, it started to dawn on me that they saw Australia as one big beach. I had an urge to whisk them away from Sydney to the Top End, with its vast country, abundant indigenous culture, intense heat and crocodiles.

Adventurous holidays can be intimidating for parents of young kids, which I pondered as we set off for Kakadu and Katherine for six days.

The girls came home exhausted – as did we – but all the richer for what they’ve learned about their country. Here were my fears, and here’s also why you shouldn’t worry.

PARENT FEAR: LONG CAR DRIVES It wasn’t always calm in the back seat on the three-hour drive from Darwin to Kakadu. But we ditched the iPad, ignored the whingeing and told the kids to “look through the trees”. (A tour

It paid off – we spotted three wild dingoes, wallabies, frogs, hawks and a snake.

The kids also learned how fast the landscape can change – from dusty scrub to flood plains and rocky escarpments. These changing environments allowed us to explain to them why indigenous tribes had to be nomadic. The trip also allowed them to experience that underrated feeling from which many interesting thoughts grow: boredom.

PARENT FEAR: HOTELS LESS SET UP FOR KIDS Many hotels in remote Australia don’t provide babysitting, kids clubs or kids-eat-for-free deals.

Our simple lodge at Cooinda in Kakadu had all of us sleeping in one tiny room. But the kids loved the trundle mattresses on

the floor and the baby frogs who hopped all over our beds.

We happen to like some comfort, though, so after bedtime we sank a beer on the patio listening to the sounds of the bush, or slunk off to the stunning resort pool for a night-time dip.

PARENT FEAR: LIMITED FOOD OPTIONS There isn’t always a great selection of fresh produce in remote Australia, so we stocked up where we could. The land up here would get no farmer excited, so we explained to the girls how resourceful tribes had to be here, and how much food can be found in the bush.

They learned from locals in Kakadu that in the wet there are fruit on the trees, and in the dry, other bush tucker can be found such as goannas, yams and waterlily flowers, whose crunchy stems taste like celery.

In Katherine, they tried bush tomatoes -–but hated them.

PARENT FEAR: LONG-ISH

BUSHWALKS We picked some short, simple treks that offered amazing rock art, beautiful views and colourful indigenous stories to boot.

The best were the 1.5km circular walk at Kakadu’s Nourlangie Rock and the half-hour uphill trek to Baruwei Lookout at Nitmiluk, from which you can enjoy sweeping views down into Katherine Gorge.

The local Jawoyn people believe Bolung the rainbow serpent still inhabits the deep, green pools of the second gorge and must be left undisturbed, which fascinated our older girls.

On the way back down, our four-year-old Sasha kept a keen eye out for the rainbow snake, while hunting leaves to give to the Jawoyns for a “bush tucker dinner”.

PARENT FEAR: CROCODILES Most croc attacks have been down to human stupidity. If you take a boat cruise, hold your kids close and admire these intense,

fascinating reptiles from a distance. Then sit down at night and read them stories about crocodiles – there are so many good ones.

PARENT FEAR: NO OCEAN TO SWIM IN There is a sprinkling of water holes up here where you’re safe from saltwater crocs – and they are divine.

At Leliyn (Edith Falls) and Katherine Hot Springs, the girls clambered over rocks, swam under waterfalls and floated down gentle rapids.

If it’s a conventional swimming pool you’re after, though, don’t worry – they’re in every hotel up here, and even some service stations.

PARENT FEAR: WILL THEY FIND INDIGENOUS CULTURE INTERESTING? Indigenous culture is mesmerising for kids. As well as the colourful stories of the Dreamtime, our girls were fascinated to learn that some elders don’t know how old they are, they call their brothers’ and sisters’ kids their own, oh and they crush up their dead relatives’ bones to put in funeral urns.

Sitting with local indigenous artists who taught us their painting style was a privilege and a joy – for all of us.

Hampstead hits top gear

Hampstead and Hampstead-Collegians were both in action in week three of the Mid-South Canterbury women’s hockey first division, but the two Mid Canterbury sides had contrasting results.

Hampstead took to the Ashburton Hockey Turf for an early afternoon fixture against Craighead Diocesan School’s 1st XI, and posted their second win of the season in a 6-0 drubbing.

Hampstead had too much firepower for Craighead, with a hat-trick from Harriet Cameron and three more goals from Sarah Harrison, Karen McAuley and Brooke Hanrahan cementing a convincing win.

Hampstead coach Kevin McCosker said he was pleased with the performance from his new-look side.

“It was a very good win and Hampstead played a really good, free-flowing game,” he said.

“Half of the team is new from last year, but they seemed to really gel together.

“Craighead are probably the lesser team in the competition, but 6-0 is a very good result and they deserved the win.”

Hampstead now sit in second place on the ladder, with two wins and a draw, behind pacesetters Timaru Girls’ High School A – who have yet to drop a point.

Meanwhile Hampstead-Collegians had a day to forget with a 4-0 loss to Cambridge in their 3pm fixture at the Ashburton turf.

The loss was their first of the season, having downed Geraldine 1-0 in their season opener before drawing with local rivals Hampstead 3-3 in week two.

Captain David Mead has led Papua New Guinea to their first rugby league Test win on foreign soil in 16 years, upsetting Fiji 24-22 in Parramatta. In a thrilling opening to the international double-header on Saturday night, Mead saved two certain tries in the first half, including a 60-metre chase to deny Canterbury flyer Tyrone Phillips. The Gold Coast winger wasn’t the only player to star for PNG, with Watson Boas crossing twice and brother Ase kicking three goals.

Foran has been given leave from the Eels since late last month, just prior to their win over Canterbury, after overdosing on prescription medicine.

The New Zealand international was not at Eels training at their north Parramatta base yesterday.

According to reports Foran has continued to work on his fitness, while undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation clinic in Brisbane.

It was initially suggested the premiership-winning pivot would return in time for Friday’s

Pirtek Stadium clash, however that is not expected be the case.

A round 12 return against the Storm at Pirtek Stadium on May 23 is the more probable scenario.

If the Eels can get under the cap by the time they meet Souths, they will need to win 12 of their last 15 matches to qualify for the NRL’s final series.

1st XV buckles under pressure

Ashburton College’s 1st XV fell to a 39-10 loss to Timaru Boys’ High School in their Crusaders Schools’ Championship tie at the Alpine Energy Stadium on Saturday.

It was College’s second defeat in as many weeks after losing out to Shirley Boys’ High School 38-14 in their season opener.

In a contest that saw TBHS score six tries and dominate possession, College will need to radically improve ahead of their clash with last season’s Crusaders Schools’ semi-

finalists and reigning national coed schools champions St Andrew’s College on Wednesday.

College team manager Dave McArthur said his side failed to string phases together against TBHS and buckled under mounting pressure, conceding three tries late on.

“They never fired at all, it was a game to forget about,” he said.

“It was like they played in their pyjamas, we can’t seem to get them motivated.”

McArthur said College must be more alert defensively against a St

Andrew’s side that thumped Rangiora High School 43-12 in their week two fixture.

“The game starts with a good defence.

“You can build on that, but when you don’t have that you’re in trouble,” he said.

“We have to try and switch them on, they have to do better than they did in Timaru and they can do better.”

Boyd bemoans Hurricanes’ inconsistency

By Patrick mckendry In losing 32-15 to the Sharks in Durban yesterday morning, the Hurricanes have undone all the good work of their massive victory over the Lions in Johannesburg last weekend.

It was a big drop-off in performance after the heights of their 50-17 win against a good team at Ellis Park, a return to the inconsistencies of days gone by which coach Chris Boyd must have thought were well behind them.

“We’re massively disappointed.

“We wanted to win the game and we wanted to play well and we didn’t do either,” Boyd said.

The Kings Park defeat could have been worse but for the fact fullback James Marshall scored a converted try in the final minutes to add a veneer of respectability to the scoreline and deny the home side a bonus point.

They now return to play the struggling Reds in Wellington but beyond that have a tough run-in, including matches against the Highlanders, Blues and Crusaders.

A few more slip-ups and their dream of going one better than last year when they were beaten

finalists will be in serious jeopardy.

They were second best in the contact areas, and, worryingly, at scrum time after dominating that area against the Lions and before that the Chiefs.

They also lost four lineouts.

“When we got into that contact area they certainly dominated that and we struggled to get goforward ball,” said Boyd.

“We knew what we were going to get and what we got was exactly what we thought we’d get and we didn’t cope with it well enough.

“We’ve had some good patches and we’ve had some average performances and in this particular [playing] group we need to get a level of consistency that we have been searching for all season,” he said.

The loss will bring back memories of the Hurricanes’ opening night defeat to the Brumbies in Canberra, a 52-10 thumping which appeared to be an anomoly until this latest result.

The one highlight for the Canes might have been the performance of flanker Ardie Savea, who led the way with a gamehigh 16 tackles and two turnovers.

“That’s been something that’d been talked about and we’ve been reminded about for a long time so to get that off our backs is good – and to get a bonus point is even better,” Umaga said.

“We’ve put that to bed and we’ve got to focus on other things.

“That’s not just outside, it’s also inside.

“We talk it about it a lot here too. Sometimes we talk about it that much it becomes more of an issue than it should be so to finally put that to bed is good.

“It was a lot tighter than we would’ve liked but as we’ve shown in previous games our ability to hang in there and comeback is probably the most consistent part of our game.

“The concern for us is we can’t rely on that.”

Week seven of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Competition produced wins for Celtic and Southern, while Hampstead, Methven and Rakaia fell to losses.

After losing out to Ashley 16-13 in their rescheduled week six fixture at Rugby Park last Tuesday, a return to winning form was imperative for Celtic if they were to keep their aspirations of a top four placing alive.

Southern did the boys in green a favour by seeing off fellow section two top-four elect team Rakaia in a clash under the lights at Hinds on Thursday evening, but it was up to Shane Enright’s side to bridge the gap, which they did, comfortably.

Celtic scored nine tries in all, and it could have been more if not for some poor decision making in the final 22.

With only two games left of the round robin section, Celtic will next face Prebbleton, who have won just once this term.

Enright insisted that only a bonus point victory will do against the section’s second from bottom team ahead of a potential make-or-break clash with third placed Darfield in a fortnight’s time.

Burn/Duns/Irwell 61 Hampstead 15

Hampstead coach Regan Broker conceded that his side’s slim chances of progressing to the quarter-finals are now over following a 61-15 thumping from Burn/Duns/Irwell.

Southern blew the race for a top four placing in section two of the combined competition wide open after dealing Rakaia their second loss of the campaign on Thursday night.

Rakaia were second on the ladder, level on 23 points with Waihora, heading in to the Mid Canterbury derby.

The eight-point deficit also denied Rakaia a bonus point on a frustrating evening for them in Hinds.

In a clash that would be won in the forwards, Southern had read the script early, with set plays the difference between the two sides on the night.

Southern’s season has been one of near misses, but Michael Ellis’ team answered their critics with a well-drilled display, and did the section’s other top fourelect clubs a favour in the process.

Rakaia’s next match against Ohoka will be pivotal, particular with Ashley on the horizon in two weeks’ time.

All Black selectors must be a happy lot

The selectors have been incredibly loyal over the years and it’s hard to argue with the results that approach has yielded.

Instead, I imagine they will go for a back three of Smith, Savea and Naholo, assuming Naholo gets through the next month.

The argument for McKenzie is also compelling. I have always said that if you are good enough, you are old enough and the only way he’s going to gain experience is by playing at international level.

McKenzie has been incredibly

consistent for the Chiefs. They have had a difficult run with injuries but have often found ways to win and McKenzie has played a big part in that.

His rise will bring Beauden Barrett into focus. As much as Barrett would love to play in the No 10 jersey, which Cruden is the favourite to wear this year, he’s been so effective as a supersub that this has become his role. He is a proven performer and I can see him filling that role again this year.

Chiefs wing James Lowe has also been playing well and a few old dogs have sent out reminders

that they shouldn’t be forgotten.

Both Israel Dagg and Cory Jane have been in good form and are proven performers in black.

What all this proves is that the depth of New Zealand rugby is as good as ever and some very good players are going to miss out.

It’s an enviable position for the selectors.

Many nations might have thought the All Blacks would be vulnerable this year given the loss of so many big-name players.

But the production line in New Zealand is quite staggering and the All Blacks will be strong again in 2016.

Captain John Terry may have played his final game for Chelsea after receiving his second red card of the season in yesterday’s 3-2 Premier League defeat at Sunderland. United crash to second loss

Mid Canterbury United’s seniors fell to their second loss of the season in a disappointing 4-2 display against Coastal Spirit at South New Brighton Park in Christchurch on Saturday.

United headed in to the tie as leaders of the Robbie’s senior men’s second division, but their defeat, along with wins for Halswell United and FC Twenty Bombers, has pushed Martin Fitzgerald’s side down to third on the ladder.

Mid Canterbury got off to the

worst possible start and trailed 3-0 after 15 minutes.

Spirit centre back Paul Hughes scored his second of the campaign, beating United goalkeeper Cosmin Teodorescu from 25 yards after five minutes.

Left back Nathan Wood then added a second from distance, the pace of the strike left Teodorescu with little chance as the home side doubled their lead before midfielder Ryan Burson added a third with a simple finish on the edge of the six-yard box.

Mid Canterbury did create chances of their own in the first

half with talisman Greg Feutz steering his effort wide with just the goalkeeper to beat, while Sam Hall was narrowly caught offside when through one-on-one, but the second period began as the first ended – with Spirit finding the net early on through striker Cody Browning.

With an hour played, Mid Canterbury, the fitter of the two sides, rallied and fought to produce the unlikeliest of comebacks as Feutz pulled one back for the visitors and added a second moments later. Despite a valiant effort in the final 30 minutes, the four goal

deficit proved too tall an order.

United will now look to pick up the pieces when they face University Aardvarks in their next outing.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury United Masters kept the pressure on front runners Waimak Villa in the Robbie’s Masters second division with a 3-2 win over CTFC Avengers at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

The win was Paul Bradford’s side’s fourth of the campaign, and are now only one point adrift of Waimak, who they face next weekend.

After calling for submissions from clubs and kindred bodies around the country, the SubCommittee met on April 28 to decide its next move and after strong discussions it was decided that the preferred points based model should be further

developed and then considered at the next meeting in June.

That will be analysed with a view to a possible trial in the northern region in the new season, if supported.

This may result in national implementation at a later date, following full industry consultation and amendment of Harness Racing New Zealand computer systems to accommodate the agreed changes.

Steel thump T-Birds Frosty

The Southern Steel addressed any lingering questions over their billing as one of the teams to beat in the ANZ Championship with a record win over the Thunderbirds in Adelaide yesterday afternoon.

After a miserable weekend of trans-Tasman action for Kiwi franchises, the Steel produced a performance New Zealand fans could be proud of, trouncing the Thunderbirds 69-54 in front of their home crowd.

The 15-goal win was the biggest margin of victory for New Zealand side on Australian soil in nine seasons, with the Magic the only other side to have previously netted a double-digit win across the Tasman, when they toppled the Fever 49-38 in 2009.

That Magic side was coached by Noeline Taurua, who now leads the Steel.

Steel midcourter Shannon Francois was pleased her side were able to rise to the challenge across the ditch.

“It’s quite good to tick that off – [winning in Australia] is something that had been looming over us and the media kind of talk up.

“So it’s good we can get that off our back and continue with our season moving forward,” the 21-test Silver Fern said.

The New Zealand conference leaders made a confident start, taking an early seven-goal lead courtesy of some slick ball movement into star shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid.

But those connections fell away towards the end of the quarter and the Thunderbirds capitalised, scoring seven of the last 10 goals of the spell to ring the deficit back to just two goals at the first break.

The Thunderbirds drew level with the Steel soon after the break, but that lacklustre period of play proved to be the only blip in an otherwise dominant performance from the Southern franchise as they powered ahead later in the quarter to take a 32-24 lead heading into the second half.

Defender Sharni Layton terrorised the visitor’s shooters all day, with the Swifts’ Kiwi import, Laura Langman, was also in superlative form, shutting down the Pulse’s key balldistributor, Chelsea Locke, with relentless one-on-one defence.

The Pulse’s stumbles in Sydney followed another disastrous showing on Australian soil from a Kiwi franchise this weekend, after the Northern Mystics copped a 70-42 drubbing by the Queensland Firebirds in Brisbane.

Adams among the big bucks Steven Adams’ third season in the NBA appears unlikely to bring his first title but the Kiwi can console himself in the knowledge he will soon become this country’s highest paid athlete.

The Thunder centre was yesterday unable to prevent his side from falling to a gamethree defeat to the Spurs, with San Antonio leading for much of the game to win 100-96 and take a 2-1 advantage in their Western Conference semi-final.

After playing a pivotal role in the Thunder’s game-two win in San Antonio – scoring 12 points and pulling down a career playoffhigh 17 rebounds – Adams yesterday scored two points and grabbed 11 boards while playing generally sound defence.

He also spent 41 minutes on the floor, a level of usage that was more than All Star guard Russell Westbrook and exemplified just how crucial the Kiwi is becoming to the Thunder’s cause.

And that importance will next year be rewarded with increased remuneration, when Adams’ rookie contract ends and he becomes eligible to sign an extension with Oklahoma City or test the open market.

With the NBA salary cap set to rise substantially in the next two seasons, ESPN’s Thunder correspondent Royce Young estimated Adams would sign a four-year contract in the region of US$15 million a year ($22 million).

Reigning V8 Supercars champion Mark Winterbottom has held on during a dramatic final lap at Barbagallo Raceway to post his first race win of the season.

The Ford driver gambled on a twostop tyre strategy yesterday as championship rivals Kiwi Scott McLaughlin and Craig Lowndes both pitted for a third time in the final stages of the 83-lap race.

The tactic paid dividends, with Winterbottom keeping secondplaced McLaughlin narrowly at bay across the final two laps of the 200km Perth SuperSprint to seal the win.

Winterbottom cursed the race’s backmarkers with five laps to go, with a duel with tailender Aaren Russell slashing his race-leading buffer by almost two seconds and almost costing him the dramatic victory.

It guaranteed a grandstand finish, with the 2015 champion manipulating his fading tyres to stave off McLaughlin and cross the line 0.3 of a second in front.

Lowndes finished in third as a member of the three-way dogfight after he had earlier seized the lead on the opening lap after beating pole winner Chaz Mostert to the first corner off the grid.

The result was a morale boost for Winterbottom, who was critical of his own driving after finishing 22nd in the round’s opening race on Saturday.

Red Bull Racing Australia’s Shane van Gisbergen and Nissan racer Rick Kelly rounded out the top five.

Such a salary would be a significant rise, given the 22-year-old will next season earn $4.6 million.

Even without endorsements it will be well above the highest estimates of the annual totals earned by Scott Dixon ($11 million), Winston Reid ($12 million) and Russell Coutts ($13 million). It’s an unfathomable amount in the context of New Zealand sport, where even our best-paid All Blacks receive around $1 million a year.

Adams’ rise up the sporting rich list could be even bigger.
