Woman assaulted on East St BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Police are investigating what appears to be an opportunistic assault on a woman on Ashburton’s main street on Wednesday evening. They’re appealing for information after the woman was assaulted while walking north on East Street, towards Walnut Avenue, at about 6.20pm. The Guardian understands the woman may have been struck with some sort of weapon. Sergeant Janine Bowden said the woman reported that as she approached the intersection with Grey Street she was assaulted by two unknown men, receiving a minor injury to her forehead. Her injuries were not serious and did not require medical treatment. The offenders appear to have run off when they were disturbed by an approaching vehicle from a nearby service station, Ms Bowden said. She said the assault appeared to be
opportunistic and there was no indication of it being sexually motivated. Police do not believe it is linked to an attempted abduction incident earlier in the week in the Allenton area. The two offenders are described as Maori or Pacific Islanders, in their late teens or early 20s. Both were believed to be at least 182cm (6ft) tall. One was reported to be wearing a grey hoodie and a black cap with the hood drawn over the top. The other was reported to be wearing a navy blue hoodie and a cap with the hood worn over it, black pants and black sneakers. Police are appealing for any sightings of persons matching this description, or any suspicious activity in the East Street area between 6pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday night. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ashburton Police on 03 307 8400. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
