Up to 30 homes will be needed in Ashburton each year to house refugees coming into the town from August 2020.

Immigration New Zealand national manager refugee division Andrew Lockhart said housing needs for all quota refugees are assessed by the Ministry of Social Development during a reception programme at the Mangere Refugee re-

settlement Centre in Auckland.

Then Housing New Zealand tees up public housing, but in the case of no availability or the refugees not qualifying for public housing, Immigration New Zealand seeks a private rental home.

“The settlement of an estimated 100 quota refugees a year equates to around 25 to 30 households each year, or three to five households every eight weeks

moving into the community,” Lockhart said.

Ashburton was this week named as one of six new refugee settlement locations following the government upping its annual quota for the country from 1000 to 1500.

Sister cities may face chop

How many sister or friendship city relationships is too many, that’s the question Ashburton District councillors are asking themselves.

The council has three official sister city and four friendship city agreements and at Tuesday’s International Relations sub-committee meeting, questions were raised by Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel over the value of some of those.

The sister city ties date back decades, but with two of the three contact has not been made for many years.

Pulaski in Virginia, US, and Ashburton became partnered in 1974 but there is no active relationship. And while they may share a name, the tie with Ashburton, Devon, England, formed in 1982 has also been inactive for many years.

The third sister city, Mianamiuonuma (previously known as Shiozawa) in Japan, was formed in 1987 and while there was contact for many years, this has declined, however councillor Liz McMillan and retired councillor Don McLeod have visited in recent years.

More recent are the four

Sister city, Pulaski, in Virginia, US. friendship city relationships.

All of these are in China, with the first, Puyang signed in 2000. Between 2010 and 2016 there were informal visits by then mayor Angus McKay. McKay also entered a friendship city agreement in 2016 with Xianyang, the home of the first Fineboon factory. This was renewed by Favel last year.

Rather than continue with all seven relationships, Favel has requested a report on those that are inactive with reasons why they should be maintained.

The question then would be whether or not those relationships councillors decided to axe should be replaced, she

said. She suggested the Ashburton District and Nebraska could be a better fit because they were both strongly involved in centre pivot irrigation.

Selwyn Price, however, suggested that rather than looking to replace relationships, it would make more sense to simply explore options if and when they arose.

Up to 30 homes needed for refugees From P1 Lockhart said officials would talk with Ashburton District councillors later this month to brief them on settlement support available for refugees, as well as the next steps to support local agencies and providers and engage with the community.

He said the New Zealand Refugee Resettlement Strategy provided a whole-of-government approach so that refugees more quickly achieved self-sufficiency, settlement in the community and independence.

Improving employment outcomes for refugees was also a key focus.

“Five years after arrival in New Zealand almost 40 per cent of quota refugees are in employment. This number is expected to increase with the ongoing implementation of the strategy,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Hakatere Multi Cultural Council and Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network is planning to set up a new migrants’ and refugees’ centre.

It was planning the centre for migrants as part of its strategic planning, but now hopes to expand the proposal following this week’s announcement.

point of contact and access to social services, would be set up this year, so its operation would be streamlined by the time refugees began coming to town in August next year.

He envisaged it could operate up to two days per week at the network’s Community House base.

The privately-funded network could apply for funding from the central government organisation Office of Ethnic Communities, as well as approach its current funding organisations such as Advance Ashburton.

“The cost is hard to estimate at the moment because it’s an

expansion of our current role, we are not forming a whole new organisation,” Avnit said.

Avnit was looking forward to welcoming refugees into Mid Canterbury.

“We already get a lot of newcomers in town, probably hundreds of people each year,” he said.

Studies had shown diversity made communities stronger and he referred to new research in the Review of Economic Studies which showed American counties with more historical immigration had higher incomes, less poverty and lower unemployment.

Woman admits attempt to bribe A woman who admitted trying to dissuade a witness from giving evidence against a male associate was sentenced to 12 months intensive supervision when she appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Stephanie Chanelle Edwards, 30, was also sentenced to 90 hours community work.

Judge Joanna Maze had been expecting a special report on the woman’s cultural background to assist in sentencing, but Legal Aid Services denied funding for it.

Edwards’ lawyer Douglas Brown said he had been asked to justify the need for a cultural report, which examines an offender’s culture and provides sociological reasons as to why their crime happened.

He did not pursue the matter after a probation officer recommended a non-custodial sentence for his client.

But Judge Maze said the case had warranted the special report as it was clear that Edwards needed a great deal of assistance.

While funding the reports was a balancing exercise, resourcing for complex cases such as Edwards’ was needed for proper consideration at sentencing, she said.

The judge did not reveal details of a comprehensive report written by a probation officer, who recommended supervision and community work.

She said Edwards had had little structure and few supports in life and her need for assistance was desperate.

Edwards had admitted trying to bribe a woman from giving evidence by withdrawing a debt of $2200. The woman and her husband had bought a car and owed the $2200.

The charge carried a maximum penalty of seven years in prison, but Judge Maze said Edwards’ offending was at the lower end of the scale.

In a summary of facts presented to the court, police said she told the complainant the debt would be forsaken if she withdrew charges against a male associate. The associate has been charged with burglary and sexual violation.

Scarecrow trail tests knowledge

This scarecrow of Toothless from the movie How To Train Your Dragon was voted the most popular on the Methven Scarecrow Trail this year.

They ranged from Harry Potter, Boss Baby and Angry Birds to the slightly less known characters like Toothless, Elliot and Fern and organisers of the annual Methven Scarecrow Trail are hailing the 2019 edition as a success.

The hugely popular event held in the school holidays each year saw more than 2000 people hit the streets of Methven in search of the 40 scarecrows created with the theme of famous children’s movie characters and while some were blindingly obvious, others really tested hunters’ knowledge.

Scarecrow makers, who ranged from local businesses to schools, and right through to family entries, were challenged with the idea of incorporating clues into their scarecrows to give those trying to identify their creation the best chance to succeed. The quality was extremely high, with some clever takes on many of the characters.

The event is held as a local fundraiser and this year’s recipient of money raised was Methven Primary School.

Principal Chris Murphy said what happened with the money raised would ultimately be up to the school, and most importantly, the students.

“We will go to the kids and ask them to think about what they might want to see the money contributed too.

“Like any school, any financial boost that isn’t part of the plan like this is hugely appreciated and we want to make sure we put it to good use that everyone is going to benefit from.

Drama students head to international training camps

Ten years ago when Jackie Heffernan was asked to teach drama she had one student; over the past decade that one student became more than 100.

And this year as she celebrates her drama school, The Big LIttle Theatre Company’s 10th birthday, she’s decided to do it in style taking 15 students aged 12 to 18 to England to attend three study courses that could set them up for a theatrical career.

“I wanted to do something spe-

cial, to take these students to England to train. It’s an opportunity they’ve most definitely earned,” she said.

Heffernan decided to aim high and wrote to the Royal Shakespeare Company, explaining her students’ achievements and passion for theatre and asked whether they could visit.

They came back and offered a one-week bespoke training programme at the Globe Theatre.

She then approached the Belgrave Theatre in her home town Coventry and again they offered her students a training slot. It was

the same story with the Theatre Royal in Bath where the students will experience a new style of theatre, Verbatim where individuals are interviewed and their story told through drama.

“They’ll have the opportunity to work alongside students of their own age. It’ll be a very rich experience, a life changing experience,” she said.

The group was now fundraising and because the project did not fit within the grant criteria for most funders this had become a major effort, Heffernan said.

“It’s been hard yakka, we’ve

made 8500 cheese rolls but this has taught them that the opportunity to travel is not theirs by right, but it’s also taught them that it doesn’t matter who you are and where you’re from, if you have enough passion and desire you can do anything.”

The concept of singing for their supper was not lost on the students as they’d entertained on many occasions to raise money, she said.

Over the past 10 years, Heffernan said the company had produced 12 shows that had involved hundreds of children. In addi-

tion many of those children had achieved very high pass rates in drama exams, with two who had been with the company since they were six and seven twice being awarded the highest mark internationally for their age and stage in Shakespearean drama.

“I’ve had the great privilege and pleasure of working alongside many young people, a great many of whom stay with us from seven to 18 and watch them develop a passion for theatre that I hope will enrich them for ever.”

The students leave on June 29 for their three-week study tour.

Fee paying students profitable

As schools increasingly look to fee paying students to boost their income, Ashburton College is planning for a future that could count a roll with more than 30 international students each year.

Currently the school has 20 international students from six countries – Taiwan, Germany, Japan, China, Argentina and Korea. And as it works to boost numbers, the number one driver will be to ensure that diversity is retained, principal Ross Preece says.

Fee paying students are becoming big business for schools and there is fierce competition, not just nationally but internationally, with New Zealand competing with Australia, England and Canada in the lucrative market.

Preece believes that building good relationships with school communities in target countries is key in parents choosing a particular country and school for their child.

“We’ve had a couple of students from China, who’ve been very successful, come through the college and we’re now getting their friends’ children coming here. It’s about positive experiences, positive relationships, word of mouth,” he said.

The college was working to

grow its international market but it would be doing that in a way that ensured plenty of cultural diversity, rather than drawing students from just one country, Preece said.

“It’s important to us to provide a good cultural mix.”

Using the Ministry of Education’s formula that suggested a school could have five per cent of its roll as international students, the college could have up to 50 students each year, but Preece said he’s happy to set 30 as the

school’s goal.

As a rough guide it costs a family $25,000 to sent a child to school in New Zealand. That fee includes airfares, accommodation and school fees. The college arranges private accommodation for students with host families paid about $240 a week.

“It’s run as a business and we have a homestay co-ordinator and a dean for students on staff,” Preece said.

Students come to New Zealand for a range of reasons. Some

to specific schools because they may offer a sport or education speciality while others come for academic reasons and to gain English language proficiency.

Some came for six months or a year, some for three years, but most between one and two years, he said.

The college had been active in the international student area for a number of years, but the programme had been revitalised over the past three years, Preece said.

Otago University Students’ Association president James Heath raised the idea on Tuesday, during a presentation to the DCC’s annual plan hearing.

Heath, speaking for thousands of students across the city, said OUSA wanted to encourage students to drink alcohol in licensed venues.

Pubs were supervised drinking environments which provided a safer alternative for students than unregulated flat parties, he said.

The impact on rates of the $51 million option would be an increase on urban property owners of an average value Ashburton residential property of $61 for the 2021-22 year and on an average value rural property, $585 for the 2021-22 year.

A Ruatoki grandmother has been jailed for her part in the death of a baby left in a hot car while she and her daughter smoked synthetic cannabis. Donna Parangi, 54, was yesterday jailed for two years and six months by Justice Sally Fitzgerald in the High Court in Hamilton for the manslaughter of 8-month-old Isaiah Neil on November 2, 2015, in Ruatoki.

Parangi’s lawyer, Susan Gray, pushed for a home-detention sentence but that would not have been justified, the judge ruled.

Justice Fitzgerald found Parangi’s culpability was similar to that of Lacey Te Whetu, who was jailed for three years for her part.

Lost dog reunited After losing his dog on Earnscleugh Station, George Sheild could not believe it when his huntaway was found alive – one year later. As there was no sign of huntaway Ben, in the three months after he went missing in the hills above Earnscleugh Station, Alexandra.

Sheild had had to assume he was dead. However, 51 weeks after disappearing into the Old Man Range above the station, the 6-year-old dog was found last month. Sheild said when his dog arrived back home, it was so pleased to see his boss, that it “took my legs clean out from under me. It is unreal that he is back,’’ Sheild said. “He was still the same dog as when I lost him and did not go feral.’’

Ceilidh finds new home Attendees the Ashburton Scottish Society’s ceilidh concert will be enjoying a taste of Scottish culture in a different location next week.

The ceilidh is set to be held next week at the Pipe Band Hall on Creek Road, not its previous venue at the Seniors Centre.

Scottish Society member Cliff Dynes said it would be great to see all the groups involved in the ceilidh coming together in a

more fitting home for the event.

“It is great for local people to be giving back and it is all very entertaining,” he said.

There will be piping, dancing, musicians and singers on show, all for a $5 entry fee, with an afternoon tea included. The event starts at 2pm on May 19.

Clarity coming for DIY industry

Wide ranging changes to the Building Act are likely to have a significant impact on New Zealand’s DIY culture, a building expert said.

Ashburton District Council building services manager Michael Wong spelled out the changes at a council environmental services committee meeting last week and said that while it might limit some DIY activities, the revised Building Act would make it clear what an unlicensed practitioner could and could not do.

Consultation on the proposed changes had started with Wong describing what was proposed in the most significant reforms since the current Building Act was

introduced in 2004.

“They’re trying to regulate it more, rather than stop the DIY culture, it’s about putting rules and clarity in place,” he said.

The proposed changes would have an impact across the whole building industry, affecting builders, homeowners and the council, Wong said.

“It means we’ll need to collect more data and ask more questions.”

Some of the changes would include compulsory extractor fans in bathrooms, rather than the current requirement for just an open window and it would make it compulsory to link extractor fans to light switches in kitchens, bathrooms, toilets and laundries. The linked fans would remain on for 30 seconds after a light was switched off.

Family of man slain by pirates supported by friends NZME The family of a Kiwi man killed by pirates in Panama have released “beautiful yellow flowers” into the Caribbean Sea in a memorial to the much loved husband, son and brother.

Alan Culverwell, 60, died last week when pirates shot him at close range after using the cover of darkness to board his family’s boat, the Aqua Lobo.

Despite suffering a machete-blow to the shoulder, his wife Derryn Culverwell managed to lock herself and their twin children in the boat’s cabin and made an emergency call to New Zealand to raise the alarm.

Derryn Culverwell has subsequently been treated in hospital and spent time helping investigators piece together the crime.

But yesterday she was able to make an emotional return to the

boat for the first time since the attack five days ago to retrieve belongings and honour her husband.

“They were able to say a few words and leave some flowers floating behind the boat as it left port,” Culverwell’s sister Derryn Hughes said.

The flowers were the idea of Culverwell’s parents, who had felt “helpless” back in New Zealand, unable to comfort and “hold their grandchildren”, Hughes said.

Yellow flowers were chosen because this had been the favourite colour of Culverwell’s beloved grandmother.

The small ceremony was a great comfort to Culverwell’s grandparents, who were “so grateful” to everyone in Panama for organising it, Hughes said.

decision about what to do with it was made, Hughes said.

Three people have now been arrested and charged over Cul-

verwell’s killing.

Leandro Herrera and Avelino Arosemena earlier appeared in court over the attack, Reuters reported. They are charged with aggravated homicide, robbery, criminal association and mistreatment of a minor.

A third suspect made a separate court appearance because they are a minor.

Derryn Culverwell had to attend both hearings and was photographed outside court.

She was being supported in Panama by two family members as well as Culverwell’s stepson and two friends.

A decision has not been made about when Culverwell’s funeral will be held.

Ardern unveils zero carbon bill

New Zealand will need to invest heavily in agricultural and biotechnical technologies if it is to meet the goals set out in the “aspirational” zero carbon bill.

That was the clear message from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Climate Change Minister James Shaw, who unveiled details of the highly anticipated legislation yesterday.

The bill – officially called the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill – was introduced to Parliament today and will pass into law late this year.

The main elements of the legislation focus on what is called a “split target”.

By 2050, the goal is for all greenhouse emissions – aside from biogenic methane – to be reduced to net zero.

Biogenic methane – the emissions created from livestock such as sheep and cattle – is not completely exempt, as the bill commits to reducing it to 10 per cent below

the 2017 levels by 2030.

The legislation only sets the goals – it does not say how the Government should get to that level.

The Climate Change Commission, which the bill will also establish, would help the Government set ways of meeting the targets.

The bill also commits to reducing gross emissions of biogenic methane to between 24-47 per cent below the 2017 levels, by 2050.

This means there will need to be significant changes to New Zealand’s agriculture sector if the target is to be met.

Farming lobby group Federated Farmers said the goal is extreme and would send the message to farmers that New Zealand is prepared to give up on pastoral farming.

But, speaking to media at the unveiling of the legislation, Shaw said this would not mean a culling of livestock would be needed to reach the goals.

He said the focus would instead be on developing technology to reduce emissions. Much of that technology, he said, is not yet available.

“If we waited to invent the technology to get to the moon before we set the target of getting there, we would have never of got there,” he said.

“Yes, it is aspirational and no we don’t actually currently have today everything that we need to get us there but we do have the things to get us started.”

He used the example of the steel production sector, which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide.

“Currently there isn’t a substitute technology in steel production – we’re going to have to create that during the course of the next 30 years to hit the target on the CO2 side.”

Ardern said there were many ways to reduce the agricultural methane emissions without culling cattle.

“We can change the way they graze. You can change what they eat.”

She said the Government had already invested $20 million into agricultural research and development.

But both she, and Shaw, agreed

more was needed.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters said the agriculture sector would be able to meet the Government’s targets.

“I believe that, with our help, which is serious financial backing to the on the farm operation and the research level that we will put into it, they will meet those targets easily.”

Asked if that meant the Government would be spending more on research and development, Peters said “precisely”.

The bill has been the subject of intense negotiations for months.

Based on the original estimates of its progression through the Parliamentary system, the bill was meant to be introduced into the House in October last year and in force last month.

That timeframe, however, was pushed back to accommodate for more negotiation time.

National yesterday welcomed the bill and its leader, Simon Bridges, said the party is happy with the net-zero target and the separate treatment of methane.

But National has “serious reservations” about the expected rate of the gross emissions reductions of biogenic methane to between 2447 per cent below the 2017 levels, by 2050.

Bridges was not convinced that this range meets National’s test, in terms of science, economic impact, or global response.

As to whether or not National will support the bill in the first reading, a spokesperson said that will be discussed in caucus.

Shaw said the bill was something he thought could have the support of National in the House.

NZ First Leader Winston Peters was pleased with the bill and said his party had the “agriculture sector’s interests at heart”.

He said the Government was committed to assisting the farming and agriculture sector through this transition period.

But Act Leader David Seymour said the bill would not change the climate in a significant way, as the country only makes up 0.17 per cent of global emissions.

South Africa starts voting

South Africans were voting yesterday in presidential and parliamentary elections amid issues of corruption and unemployment.

The vote comes 25 years after the end of apartheid, but despite the demise of the system of racial discrimination the country remains divided by economic inequality.

The African National Congress, the party of Nelson Mandela that has been in power since 1994, is likely to win a majority but it will face a difficult challenge to do as well as five years ago.

The party has been tarnished by widespread corruption scandals and a national unemployment rate of 27 per cent that has left many voters disillusioned. ANC head President Cyril Ramaphosa has campaigned on promises to clean up his party, an acknowledgment of the problems that forced his predecessor to resign last year.

The ANC also has vowed to embark on a programme of seizing white-owned land without compensation, for

South Africans queue in the early morning cold to cast their votes in the mining settlement of Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, in South Africa.

In the most likely scenario, the ANC will need to form a coalition government with another party to get the votes needed to alter the constitution. That is likely to be the Economic Freedom Fighters, a populist, left-wing party that also supports land seizures.

If the ANC’s share of the

vote slips below 60 per cent, Ramaphosa could be vulnerable and his party could oust him and choose a new leader.

The largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, has campaigned vigorously against corruption but its support among the country’s black majority is limited because it is perceived as a white-run party. More than 40 smaller parties also are vying for power in the balloting.

The country’s young voters, who make up about 20 per cent of the electorate, largely support the EFF, which is led by charismatic firebrand Julius Malema, who broke from the ANC six years ago.

Neither the president nor the parliament is elected directly. Voters cast ballots for a national party and the number of votes won by each party determines how many representatives are sent to the legislature. The president is the leader of the party that gets the most votes.

Some 26 million people of the country’s population of 57 million are eligible to vote.

The polls opened at 7am local time and were to close at 9pm.

The day is a national holiday to encourage turnout.

South Africa was famous for its long lines of voters in the first post-apartheid election 25 years ago. But a sense of national apathy this year could be an ominous sign for the ANC. Preliminary results will be announced from the electoral commission in the capital, Pretoria, and final results are not expected for 48 hours.

But the most notable delay announced was a familiar one: The long wait for more Avatar films will go on a little longer.

Iran steps away from 2015 nuclear deal NZME Iran has delivered letters to ambassadors outlining its partial withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, state television reported yesterday, without elaborating on what steps it plans to take.

The letters were to be delivered to the leaders of Britain, China, the European Union,

France and Germany.

All were signatories to the nuclear deal, under which Iran limited its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

A letter was also to go to Russia.

Iran’s president says the Islamic Republic will keep its excess enriched uranium and heavy water, setting a 60-day deadline for new terms for its

nuclear deal.

Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that if that deadline passes without better terms, Iran will begin higher enrichment of uranium.

He made the comments in a live address on the anniversary of US President Donald Trump pulling America out of the accord.

Since then the United States has restored crippling

economic sanctions on Iran, even as Tehran continued to abide by the accord, according to United Nations inspectors.

Iranian officials had warned that the country might increase its uranium enrichment, potentially pulling away from the deal after spending a year trying to salvage it with European partners.

Recent accidents buck safer flying trends AP With plane crashes making headlines over the weekend, one in Florida with no fatalities and another in Russia that killed dozens, travellers might question whether flying has become less safe.

Aviation experts regard the recent incidents as a statistical blip, however, pointing out that such accidents and fatalities are a fraction of what they were as recently as the 1990s.

Advances in aircraft and airport design, better air traffic control, and improved pilot training are often cited as factors in reducing accidents.

Worldwide, there were more than 50 fatal airline accidents a year through the early and mid-1990s, claiming well over 1000 lives annually, according to figures compiled by the Flight Safety Foundation.

Fatalities dropped from 1844 in 1996 to just 59 in 2017, then

rose to 561 last year and 209 already this year.

Nearly half of the airline deaths in 2018 and 2019 occurred during the crashes of two Boeing 737 Max jets in Indonesia and Ethiopia. In each case, investigators are examining the role of flight software that pushed the nose of the plane down based on faulty sensor readings.

That raises concern about safety around automated flight controls, said William Waldock, an expert at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Beyond the two Max crashes, safety experts see little immediate connection between other incidents such as the deadly weekend crash of a Russian plane that caught fire after an emergency landing in Moscow and the case of the charter airliner that ran off a Florida runway into a river.

Investigators probe crashes in search of clues to prevent

more accidents from the same cause. In the case of the Aeroflot jet that caught fire, killing more than 40 people on board, attention is likely to turn to Russian media reports that lightning disabled the plane’s communications system and whether pilots should have burned off fuel before the emergency landing.

Lightning strikes are not uncommon. Planes are built so that the fuselage acts as an electricity-conducting shield, keeping the voltage away from passengers and critical systems.

The jolt is often dissipated off wings or the tail. Critical electronics have surge protection.

Nitrogen is used to reduce the risk that electrical arcing could spark a fire in a fuel tank.

The fiery crash in Moscow raised questions about making an emergency landing shortly after take-off, while the plane is still fully loaded with fuel and likely over the maximum landing weight.

Only very large airliners have the ability to dump fuel. Most jetliners including the popular Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 do not. That leaves only one option for lightening the fuel load on a plane like the Russian-made Sukhoi SSJ100 – circling long enough to burn fuel.

Video of the landing showed the Aeroflot plane seemed to touch down on its main landing gear, then bounce up before coming down hard a second time. At that point, flames can be seen coming from the jet.

Video also captured passengers toting their carry-on luggage as they fled the burning jet.

Passengers on US airlines are told to leave personal belongs in an emergency because it can slow the evacuation when seconds are precious.

“We will never know if more lives could have been saved if the bags were left behind,” said Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants.

Britney in dire straights Britney Spears’ mother has revealed that the pop star is in “dire straits” and that she is going to court to help manage her daughter’s health care, according to sources. The singer is fighting her father, Jamie Spears, in court after he was granted conservatorship, which gives him approval over her personal and financial affairs, following her 2007 breakdown.

Spears’ mother, Lynne, has filed new court documents, asking a judge to let her lawyer appear at a court hearing late this week in Britney’s conservatorship case. At the hearing, Lynne will ask the judge to order Spears’ father to include her in her daughter’s treatment plan.

What is more important to you?

T

ake out a piece of paper, grab yourself a pen – and sit down, this might take a while.

Give yourself a little exercise in life as a New Zealand citizen.

Write down what’s important to you, what really matters and what you want to see changed, brought in or improved by government.

And put them in order.

Take your time, mull it over – make sure you have exactly what you want on your New Zealand wish list in the most perfect order to suit your demand.

Now, take a look down that list.

In most cases you’d expect to find the important things in life; raising the minimum wage,

reducing the cost of living, lower house prices, less taxes and money being handed over to the big house, lower costs for fuel, better living conditions, less people on benefits and other things like equal pay for men and women.

But where does making the use of cannabis legal rate among your priority jobs for the government?

If it doesn’t figure on your wish list, then shame on you.

How dare you ignore something that is so blindingly of huge importance to those currently sitting in the beehive.

Yes, of all the issues currently facing the average New Zealander, our government is placing such importance on the legalisation of a drug that, let’s be honest here, has caused no amount of problem in the public space for as long as anyone might care to remember, that it makes other more obvious major issues seems like child’s play.

It’s mind-boggling in a way that we’ve now come to a referendum next year on the matter of this subject which is based largely on the bargaining between parties following on from the last election.

There’s a lot of water to go

under the bridge before we even get to the point of voting next year and a lot of plans and changes will need to be outlined before people are informed enough to make a decision.

Simple things like workplace contracts which currently include drug usage and testing will become a can of worms with marijuana far more involved than alcohol which leaves the system a lot quicker.

If passed and fully legal, someone who was to smoke marijuana on a weekend could still technically fail a drug test late the next week with the drug known to stay in the system for days, and in some cases, weeks.

Although not potentially impaired by the drug at the time, they are still in breach of a drug-

free workplace, despite having actually done something which is completely legal.

Medicinal marijuana is a completely different ball game. With good reason, someone should have, at least, the option of being able to gain access to the drug to aid their medical issues.

But to think that any 20-yearold can wander into a store and purchase the same drug over the counter is both incredulous and scary at the time.

How about as a country we focus on what is really important like the things that are going to make life a little easier through the easing of burden whether it be financial or mental?

Surely that’s more important than whether or not it’s legal to get high?

In 1994, South Africa’s newly elected parliament chose Nelson Mandela to be the country’s first black president.

In 2008, jury selection began in the Chicago trial of R&B superstar R. Kelly, accused of videotaping himself having sex with a girl as young as 13.

In 2012, President Barack Obama declared his unequivocal support for same-sex marriage in a historic announcement that came three days after vice president Joe Biden spoke in favour of such unions.

Ten years ago: The top religious adviser to Jordan’s king thanked visiting Pope Benedict XVI for expressing regret after a 2006 speech that many Muslims

deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. Pakistani warplanes pounded the Taliban-held Swat Valley in what the country’s prime minister called a “war of the country’s survival”.

Five years ago: Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first trip to Crimea since its annexation, calling it “historic justice” during a Victory Day display of military pomp and patriotism.

am thrilled, and not surprised, with this week’s announcement that Ashburton has been chosen as the sixth new refugee resettlement location.

With beautiful landscapes, a growing economy, low unemployment rates, and health, education and housing options that are currently being refocused and properly funded by Government to better support aspirational New Zealanders and their families, Ashburton is a natural choice for a new resettlement location.

New blood enters competitive ploughing scene

Methven’s Matt Ridge is among the few newcomers that older ploughmen are so keen to see take on competitive ploughing.

Ridge had two veterans guiding him, including former world champion Bruce Redmond, yesterday on the first practice day for the New Zealand Ploughing Championships at the Wilkinsons’ family farm at Chertsey.

Both ploughmen said they were only too happy to give Ridge a hand and wanted to see more new blood enter the sport.

For the first time a contemporary ploughing event has been added to the national competition to be contested by a small field of Ridge, Jess Cunliffe from Ashburton, Paul Kowalewski from Waimahaka and Joe Marychurch from West Melton.

Ridge said he was looking forward to competing.

“This is my first year. We got into it when Bruce [Redmond] did a have-a-go-day and it got mentioned at Young Farmers, so

a few of us had a go.’’

He enjoyed the experience and decided to take ploughing to the next level.

“It’s just cruising and out in the fresh air that I like and testing yourself to drive straight and make a good job.’’

Ridge, 28, works fulltime on his family’s mixed cropping farm and also works as a stone-picking contractor in his spare time.

He was originally planning to compete on a Ford tractor, but at the last minute changed to a Massey Ferguson 240.

Yesterday was only his third time on the tractor, but he was not perturbed about going into his first competition with an unfamiliar vehicle.

“I wouldn’t say I had the hang of it, but I’m getting there.

“I think the most difficult part of ploughing is keeping it straight. If you get it wrong at the start it can go [pear shaped] pretty quickly.’’

Organisers are keen to see the contemporary class grow in future events.

Dairy commodity prices moved in yet another positive direction at the Global Dairy Trade auction, but wholemilk prices dropped again.

Prices overall lifted 0.4 per cent for the 11th rise in a row at the May 7 event, but commodities were up and down with the key ingredient of wholemilk easing 0.5 per cent from the last auction three weeks ago.

This was the third consecutive drop for wholemilk, trading at an average price of $4921 a tonne or $US3249/t. Skim milk rose 2.8 per cent overall at $US2521/t.

ASB senior rural economist Nathan Penny said dairy auction prices consolidated further after lifting “a touch’’.

“However, the result was mixed by product category, with three price rises matched by three price falls, while butter prices were unchanged.’’

He said the wholemilk drop was in line with expectations, but prices had still lifted 20 per cent this year.

Overall, dairy markets appeared to have now fully factored in the recent slide in New Zealand milk production, he said.

March milk production fell 7.5 per cent compared with the same month a year ago.

Anhydrous milkfat (AMF) increased on average to $US6217/t, up 1.4 per cent from the previous event a butter prices were unchanged at $US5486/t.

Penny said milkfat prices consolidated at high levels with the AMF lift taking the price gain to 26 per cent so far this year.

“While butter prices were unchanged overnight, prices have lifted 42.2 per cent so far over the year. The relatively benign

auction result likely reflects the fact that New Zealand production is approaching the end of the season, with little new local information for dairy markets to digest.

Indeed, we anticipate that dairy prices may continue to bobble along near current levels over the next few months until markets learn more about the production outlook for the new season.’’

At this early stage, ASB expected new season production levels to be modest with spring production unlikely to match the record production levels recorded last year, he said.

Rennet casein was up 3.1 per cent to $US6610/t, but cheddar was back 2.4 per cent at $US4217/t. Also down were butter milk powder by 10.3 per cent at $US3242/t and lactose by 2.7 per cent at $US887/t.

Dairy farmers have watched approvingly as commodity prices have tracked upwards since December 4 when they finally turned around after a long collapse extending from last May. Penny said the modest domestic production outlook, already soft production in other dairy exporting nations and firm demand pointed to dairy prices moving towards a cyclical peak this year.

“The auction result reinforces our 2018/19 milk price forecast of $6.60/kg.

Similarly, we continue to see upside risks to our already-bullish 2019/20 milk price forecast of $7/kg.’’

However, the forecast had to be seen with an open mind as the 2019/20 season had yet to begin, he said.

At the auction 179 bidders bought 15,375t compared with 17,854t of product sold at the last event.

The next GDT event is on May 21.

Timaru ploughman Bob Mehrtens has some unfinished business at the Minnesota world championships, but in the meantime all his concentration is focused on this weekend’s competition.

Mehrtens is competing in his 41st New Zealand Ploughing Championships and was gauging his form at practice runs on Wednesday and today in the leadup to the two-day event at Chertsey.

He quickly scotched any reference to him being the favourite in the reversible class despite representing New Zealand at the world championships in Kenya, where he was runner-up, and Germany.

As last year’s national winner he’s also earned a berth for this year’s Minnesota event in August.

“There aren’t any favourites in the reversible and it could be anybody’s match. There are some good competitors here with five of us in the reversible and 15 in the conventional.’’

Nonetheless, Mehrtens will be hard to beat. Last year he accumulated 393.5 points to head off Putaruru’s Malcolm Taylor, who also acts as his coach at world events.

There are no plans to stop competing as long as good health continues.

“I must be an old bugger and it’s a lot harder to get old because a lot don’t get the chance. I enjoy the competition part otherwise I wouldn’t do it and as long as I’m fit and able I will carry on.’’

Nor will paying his way to attend world events stop him, pointing to the much bigger expense of car racing if that was his hobby.

As a non-farmer, Mehrtens’ Ford 7740 tractor and Kverneland plough sits in the shed when it’s not overseas, accompanying him on the world circuit.

“We sent that to Kenya in 2017 and it came home and it was in Germany last year and this year it will be going to the United States.

ent performance at Minnesota after dipping below his normal standards in day one on crop stubble at Germany, only to make a good recovery to finish third in the grass ploughing.

Mehrtens said he was “not so good’’ in the stubble ploughing.

“We are always looking to improve and I look at a lot of ploughing on YouTube to see what other people are doing, but nothing’s going to change that much and I will have the same tractor and same plough. There’s no point fixing anything if it isn’t broken.’’

Honey prices lose a bit of buzz

A market downturn has had a significant impact on the profitability of many beekeeping businesses and some rationalisation is expected over the next year, Apiculture New Zealand chief executive Karin Kos says.

Figures have been released on the 201718 honey season which showed honey volumes and hive yields were up by 35 per cent and 21 per cent respectively, while average honey prices were lower than the previous year for most types apart from monofloral manuka honey.

In a statement, Kos said the softening of prices had come after more than 10 years of increasing value for the majority of all New Zealand honeys on the international market.

“Unfortunately, we are continuing to see

falling prices and sluggish sales over the 2018-19 year as we compete with global honeys that typically sell for lower rates than our beekeepers have received over the last four to five seasons,’’ she said.

While total registered hive numbers (up 11 per cent) and registered beekeeping enterprises (up 9 per cent) continued to increase over the 2017-18 years, it was unlikely that growth, particularly in the commercial sector, would continue, given current market conditions.

On the upside, the Ministry for Primary Industries’ 2018 Apiculture Monitoring Programme Report highlighted the increased demand for pollination services with the expansion in several horticulture sectors.

That was good news for the industry as it provided another source of income for beekeepers, Kos said.

Mainzeal lawyers back in court

Lawyers in the Mainzeal case were back in court yesterday arguing whether the $36 million penalty handed down to directors of the failed construction company, including former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, should attract up to six years’ interest. They were also trying to clarify the details for setting the fine.

Justice Francis Cooke left the door open for further arguments in his February ruling to allow for any “arithmetical mistakes, omissions or other errors” in setting the size of the penalty he may have made in the 178-page judgment.

At yesterday’s one-day hearing at the Wellington High Court, Justice Cooke explained that he wanted to ensure there were no mistakes in his substantive decision, and avoid the need for a second trial on the quantum.

The parties have lodged appeals and cross-appeals against initial findings on the directors’ culpability, but haven’t secured a date in the Court of Appeal. They told the judge a hearing is likely next year, meaning yesterday’s hearing will be ruled on before then.

ruary decision, Justice Cooke took a starting point of $110.6 million owed to creditors and discounted that to get to $36 million. Of that, directors Shipley, Peter Gomm and Clive Tilby were each liable for $6 million, while principal Richard Yan could be liable for the full amount.

Hodder said he would deal with a separate matter relating to the directors’ insurance by filing a memorandum to the court, given the issue would have wider implications than just this case.

“The insurer hasn’t had a chance to think about it, or take advice itself,” Hodder said.

NZME The Reserve Bank has cut the Official Cash Rate to a record low 1.5 per cent and signalled further cuts will follow.

The RBNZ cut the rate from 1.75 per cent at 2pm. The Kiwi dollar dropped half a cent on the news to $US65.55c “The Monetary Policy Committee decided a lower OCR is necessary to support the outlook for employment and inflation consistent with its policy remit,” the newly minted committee – which includes three external members – said in the statement.

Changes to the central bank’s

forecasts in the latest monetary policy statement now show a chance for another cut by March.

The OCR track goes from 1.8 per cent to 1.4 per cent in March 2020.

The bank’s prior forecast in February had indicated the first move wasn’t anticipated until the first half of 2021, and that that move would have been up.

In March, however, governor Adrian Orr surprised markets when he said that, given the weaker global economic outlook and reduced momentum in domestic spending, the more likely direction of the next official cash rate move was down.

Markets had been unsure of

whether or not the central bank would cut rates yesterday as the global economy has been more positive, with both the US Federal Reserve and the Reserve Bank of Australia holding benchmark rates this week. On the flip side, headline inflation remains below the 2 per cent mid-point of the central bank’s target range and economic growth has been tepid.

Market pricing had pointed to a 50 per cent chance of a 25 basis-point cut to 1.5 per cent yesterday. The median estimate in a Bloomberg poll of 17 economists was for a 25 basis-point rate cut to 1.5 per cent, although many said they were on the fence.

Pushpay appoints new CEO

Digital church collection payment operator Pushpay said it has appointed board chairman Bruce Gordon as the new chief executive after Chris Heaslip resigned effective May 31.

Gordon, who will assume the role from June 1, will also be an executive director while Heaslip will remain a director, it said in a release to the stock exchange. Graham Shaw, previously an independent director, has assumed the role of chairman.

“Succession planning for growth companies is important and now that the business is of significant size and scale, the time is right to welcome Bruce Gordon to the position of CEO. Bruce has the operational experience and competencies required to build on the success that Chris has helped cre-

Heaslip said the past eight years building Pushpay “have been hugely rewarding” from its “humble beginnings with three staff operating above a gym in Glenfield to over 350 staff and more than 7000 customers across the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.”

The company, which provides a donor management system, including donor tools, finance tools and a custom community app for churches, earlier reported a net profit of $US18.8 million for the year ended March 31, from a loss of $US23.3 million a year earlier. Total revenue lifted to $US98.4 million from $US70.2 million in the prior period.

The stock last traded down 2.9 per cent at $3.71.

over medium-high heat. Season steaks and, working with 1 steak at a time, use tongs to place the steak in the frying pan, browning the fatty edge first. Cook until the fat is golden and rendered. Repeat with remaining steak. Place both steaks back in the frying pan and brown well.

Transfer to the hot tray and cook in the oven for 15 minutes.

■■ Remove steaks from the oven and place on a warmed plate, cover with foil and a clean tea towel and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes.

■■ Yorkshire puddings: Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing jug and make a well in the centre. Add eggs, then gradually beat in the milk and water until you have a smooth batter. Cover and set aside for at least 15 minutes.

■■ Heat a 12-hole muffin tin in the oven for 5 minutes. Spoon 1t of the collected beef fat (or use butter), into each muffin hole.

Place back in the oven and heat until the fat is smoking. Remove from the oven and quickly pour the batter into the muffin holes and cook in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden and puffed.

■■ Pan sauce: Pour the red wine into the hot frying pan and reduce by half. Add the beef stock and reduce by half again. Add the butter and swirl until glossy.

Season and strain into a jug.

■■ To serve: Serve steaks with the pan sauce, horseradish cream and yorkshire puddings. Roasted root vegetables are the perfect accompaniment.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle Well the summer season is over and it has been great gardening weather so much sunshine brings out the best of flowerings.

The Dahlia Circle members ending their round of shows with an autumn show on April 16.

A great variety of entries in 22 different classes.

Dahlias, roses, chrysanthemum, pansies, hydrangea, begonias, fuchsia, along with vegetables, 85 entries in all.

Graham Gunn took out the champion bloom with a medium dahlia and Brian Glassey runner-up with an amazing chrysanthemum.

Great to have everyone taking part and creating some discussion on the differences between a bulb, a rhizome, and a spike sections.

Our monthly meeting followed with Brian Glassey presiding, 12 members and three visitors attended and three apologies received. Supper concluded the evening.

Time to be cutting down the dahlias and resting the tubers for the spring. We all have different methods of wintering tubers over, but lifting and dividing late May for storage in sawdust ensures no frost damage.

The last get-together before winter recess will be on Tuesday, May 21 with a meal at the Stables Restaurant at 6pm, followed by the AGM at 7.30pm at the same venue.

Ashburton Golf Club There were some massive games on the Brandon battlefield last Saturday, when the premier pairs trophy, the Watson Cup kicked into knockout mode, and all of the top 16 pairings came with war paint on.

Top seeds Eric and John managed to keep their heads and dispatched the bunnies Hamish and Arkright.

This has now set up a juicy quarter-final against Royce and Ian, who did the business on Hero and Braydon.

Giving away about 50 years and a 100 metres off the tee, Royce still shot a level par front nine, not bad off a 15 handicap. Ian pulled Royce’s trundler for him and by all accounts kept a very neat scorecard, it’s all about teamwork!

Can Royce do it again will Ian take part? My call,

Eric and John will just pip it.

David and Robert won the battle of the morning players’ match-up against Shane and Gordy, and will now take on the Stoddart boys who tamed Brent and Jason.

Dylan and Ryan are playing well at present but I believe Robert and especially David will have a bit too much game for them, but I am calling extra holes.

Hoppy and Ken continued their march to picking up Kenny’s first club trophy, easily disposing of Blair and Steve. They now come up against Spud and Davo who had no trouble putting the two “cow” Pats to bed.

This game will be a cracker, Spud is brandishing his putter like Harry Potter’s wand, Davo is arrow straight tee to green but Kenny will bring plenty of shots and I still think its Hoppy and Ken’s year.

Then in the final game Tuffy and Bruce who were ruthless against Bill and Alan take on John and Wilson who eventually got over Gaby and Perry after 21 holes. I am surprised Gaby’s knees and back held out so long. Though I have been told that he didn’t have to carry Perry the whole way as he did manage to borrow a wheelbarrow for the last few holes.

Tuffy and Bruce are both form horses so I think this will be the end of the road this year for John and Wilson.

The first round non-winners (getting a bit PC there) will now play off for the Newton trophy. We will have results and semi-final predictions for both cups next week.

Non-match players will have a par round this week.

Big well done to Peter Walker shooting a superb 4 under 68 last Saturday in the stroke round and to Richard McKernan shooting a 74 off a 10 handicap.

The course is still looking wonderful and the scores are showing this. See you around the course – good golfing.

At our next meeting we were lucky enough to have Ron Lindsay, a tutor from Timaru, speak to us about black and white photography. He was a very entertaining speaker and we all learnt a lot from him.

Hinds Women’s Institute The April meeting of the Hinds Women’s Institute took place on Wednesday 24 with ten people present at the home of Valmai and Ken McKenzie.

The thought for the day was read: “The world is full of willing people – those who are willing to work and the rest willing to let them.”

Some business was attended to. Remits for conference were examined, a report on Officers Meeting at the Seniors Centre delivered, discussion took place on how Cup Day is to be run this year, and arrangements made for catering for the Anzac Day Service to be held at the Hinds Community Centre the following day: a large crowd is anticipated.

As well the competitions schedules are out for the June mini-home industries meeting. Posy bowls for the Ashburton Hospital would be delivered on the Friday of a busy week.

The guest speaker for April was Jo Metcalf, manager and funeral director of Memory Funerals who answered a lot of questions about funeral planning, cremation, interment, catering, floral tributes, visitations and the many other services offered to ensure that the deceased receive the most reassuring care.

A small group meant that a lot of questions were able to be answered in a sensitive and informative way.

For her time, Jo was presented with a gift.

A very tasty and plentiful afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, Rona McConnell and Valmai McKenzie.

MSA Golf Section The MSA Golf Section along with members from the RSA Golf Section travelled to Geraldine on Sunday, May 5. Playing a social game at Denfield. We had a great turnout and enjoyed a great day of golf.

Then was off to the Village Inn for prize giving and drinks, a competition was held between two clubs with RSA coming out on top just.

Other winners on the day were Steve Stratford 39 points, Tony McAndrew 39, Trish Cates 37, Janice Dunlop 35, Robin Simms 35.

Nearest Pins were Steve Stratford and Brent Smith, Twos were Steve Stratford and Lindsay Jackson.

Chump of the Day went to our visitor Ant McGuire for hitting the powerlines twice on the same hole.

Run and Walk Ashburton A busy week for our runners and walkers with Tuesday evening having a great turnout of 10 runners and one walker who completed 3 and 6km around the perimeter of the domain under the lights. A great opportunity for anyone wanting to work on their speed or simply enjoy a mid-week workout with others.

The Wednesday evening walkers had the same enthusiasm which hosted five at 5pm and another seven walkers at 6pm. Both midweek events get you out of your armchair and along to exercise with others. Keep up the great work everyone, this is a great routine leading into winter.

The sound of duck shooting opening accompanied our five Saturday morning runners down the river track with a quick out and back of 10km.

Later at the Saturday afternoon meet a beautiful balmy afternoon was enjoyed by 12 members.

Starting from the domain runners completed a 10km block around the Alford Forest Road/Racecourse Road area and the walkers ventured out to Company Road and did various routes through the Industrial Estate and back, everyone having built up a good thirst and enjoyed afternoon tea on their return.

The Gilberts, Merv, Jackie and son Mark all took part in the Hanmer half marathon and 10km event on Saturday. Jackie completed the 10km walk in a time of 1:36:42, while Mark made sure he crossed the line ahead of his father in 2:01:03 and had just caught his breath to cheer in Merv at 2:15:42 – congratulations to you all!

Dave Strong and Rob Beale travelled to Christchurch on Sunday and experienced walking on the new Athletics Track at Nga Puna Wai, an event held by Race Walking Canterbury.

Competitors were challenged to either a social or race walk for up to one hour. Both men were very happy with the 8.5km they achieved, and the advice offered from the judges afterwards was encouraging and well received.

Good luck to our six walkers heading to the St Clair half marathon next Saturday and one runner off to The Nugget Waihi and Waihi Beach 23km Trail Run. Until next week, keep moving everyone!

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury What a week this has been, the first round of the National District Championship was held on Thursday night. The Mid Canterbury Association has a team entered in the B league and are the current champions.

Unfortunately this competition, which is only in its second year, has failed to attract the entries that were anticipated.

Only three teams have entered, from Auckland (Jafas) Hutt Valley (Wasps) and Mid Canterbury (Titans).

The opening round saw the Titans cleansweep with 11 points to nil in both matches.

At the weekend two training “camps” were held, seniors on Saturday and juniors on Sunday.

Saturday was not a good choice as many had other commitments so the day was shortened.

On the other hand a good number of juniors attended on Sunday and many positives resulted.

It is a huge credit to the Coronation and Phoenix clubs that there are so many senior shooters who are taking an interest in coaching and are so willing to get involved with the training of juniors.

A win/win situation occurs in that the seniors are constantly reminded of the basics and the clubs are building a good number of motivated well trained juniors.

Scores this week attest to the fact that training pays off with Jack McIntosh, Logan McCorkindale and Aimee Harris producing top efforts.

Some of our members will be travelling to Dunedin this weekend for the East Otago championships, a warm welcome is assured and some good results are expected. Enjoy.

Mixed bag for locals

Ashburton indoor bowls representative sides endured a mixed bag of results in their fixture against their closest rivals, South Canterbury, on Sunday at the McNally Street Indoor Bowls Stadium.

Playing in two separate fixtures across the course of the day’s play, for both the Hight Trophy and Calder Shield, Ash-

burton managed to walk away with victory in the Hight Trophy but the development side competing for the Calder Shield were comfortably beaten by their Timaru-based counterparts.

In the Hight Trophy, Ashburton set the early tempo, swamping South Canterbury, and they waltzed away with a convincing 70-42 victory.

Experienced players, Michael Lawson – who will next week

wear the New Zealand blazer for the first time when the Mat Blacks take on Australia in Invercargill – and former South Island representative, Mat Bassett led the charge with six wins each from the six matches.

In the Calder Shield fixture, South Canterbury were victorious with a 64-48 scoreline.

Wakanui bowler, John Cuthbertson was the best of the local players finishing with five wins

McCartney suffers another blow NZME Eliza McCartney has suffered another injury setback.

The 2016 Rio Olympics women’s pole vault bronze medallist has been struggling with an ongoing hamstring injury for several months, which forced her to miss most of the domestic athletics season.

The 22-year-old had said she was targeting a return at the Shanghai Diamond League event next weekend, meaning she’d be able to take part in the entire Northern Hemisphere season.

However that plan has now changed, with McCartney to now sit out any competitions for at least another six weeks.

“Jeremy [McColl], her coach and the rest of her support team are looking at early-

to-mid-July type timing,” Athletics New Zealand High Performance Coach Manager Scott Newman told Radio Sport.

“That’s still three months before the athletics world championships. That’s plenty of time to build up and compete, so there’s certainly no concern around timing with that.”

That timeframe would likely give McCartney the three Diamond League events in London, Birmingham and Paris, before the season-ending event in Brussels.

Newman’s adamant it’s more precautionary than anything.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a concern, it’s just at the moment we just want to make sure that she’s absolutely perfect to get across into Europe. There’s no point her going off to Europe until she’s absolutely right.”

Blues’ shake-up There are also several selection changes as Blues coach Leon MacDonald looks to shake things up following his team’s 26-21 defeat in Canberra, including Harry Plummer replacing Otere Black at first-five. Wing Rieko Ioane is back.

Recognising sporting excellence We continue our look at the nominees for this year’s Mid Canterbury Sports Awards Volunteers – category not judged Chris Batt – Squash Chris is the voice of the Mid Canterbury area of the Squash Midlands district. He attends (and chairs) board meetings, collaborates and co-ordinates with all 10 Mid Canterbury clubs. Chris was part of the interclub sub-committee in its transitional year (when 10 clubs joined the district and our interclub competition) Chris instigated the first Mid Canterbury Squash Development officer for the area to increase participation in squash.

Sandy Hogg – Swimming Sandy has been a member of the swim team committee since 2011. Sandy came to the swim team and took on the role as club treasurer. She spent a number of years in this role and then moved on to the club’s event co-ordinator, a role which she still holds. In this role Sandy organises all club activities, including the Ashburton Swim Meet which is held annually. She is a National Swim NZ official for inspector of turns. Sandy officiates at national and regional swim meets. Sandy is a kind and caring person and no job is too big for her.

Peter Leonard – Tennis Benjamin Franklin once said, “if you want a job done, give it to a busy person”. Peter Leonard is a busy person. A handy tennis player with countless local titles, he’s involved himself in developing the junior game, been on the sport’s governing board, run regional aspects of his sport and has been asked to contribute at a higher regional level. A current junior convenor, selector, Canterbury Country delegate and man behind the running of a number of high-profile local tournaments, he’s the driving force behind tennis in Mid Canterbury.

Brian Kerr – Basketball Brian has given up huge amounts of his time to dedicate to the sport of basketball here in Mid Canterbury. Coaching the Mid Canterbury men’s representative side, he’s also kept himself busy overseeing three Ashburton College sides – all of which have enjoyed great results across the South Island in various tournaments.

Brian is also the co-ordinator for the Mid Canterbury Men’s A Grade competition.

Patrick Patea – Softball Alongside his partner, Penny, Patrick is the man at the helm of Fairfield Softball. Running coaching sessions four days a week and taking time out of his own life to ensure the sport continues to flourish in Mid Canterbury. As well as his work at the club level, he also gives time to the local school sides enabling the next generation of softballers the best possible pathway to go forward and enjoy playing the sport.

Andrea Scammell – Swimming Andrea has been a member of the swim team over the last three years. During the last three years, she has been the club’s treasurer and she also runs the electronics equipment at swim meets at the EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Schools swim meets and Aorakis. Andrea is always on hand to help as a team manager when the swim team travels. Andrea is a valued member.

Anne Tait – Swimming Anne joined the swim team in 2012. Anne is an active member and regional Inspector of turns. Anne officiates at regional swim Canterbury swim meets. Anne has been our past uniform co-ordinator and team secretary. She is now the president of the Ashburton Swim Team which she was appointed to two and half years ago.

Anne works tirelessly in the background to make sure the club runs to capacity as a top swimming club. For Anne nothing is a problem and she is so valuable to have as a member of the club.

Madison Trusler-Clark – Basketball Madison Trusler-Clark has given plenty to the sport of basketball. Throw a job in her direction and she’ll most likely put her hand up and just do it. One of the real key behind the scenes figures of Mid Canterbury basketball, she can be found coaching various age groups and levels of ballers, running the sideline as a ref or sitting on the bench handling the substitutions, she’s taken a huge amount of time out of her own life for the betterment of the sport here at a local level.

Penny Tuanui – Softball Penny runs everything at Fairfield Softball. From encouraging children, teens and adults to play the sport, she handles subscriptions, organises fundraisers, and ensures club and team unity across all levels.

She also last year volunteered to manage the Ashburton College girls’ side despite having none of her own children in the side and is a real asset to the sport here in Mid Canterbury.

won every one of their games in the Mid Canterbury Netball ACL premier netball competition, which was a fantastic result for any sporting team. They capped off their season with a win over Methven A in the final, and two of their key players picked up two of Mid Canterbury Netball’s individual trophies at the end of the season.

Mid Canterbury Hawke Cup cricket team Despite their first match of the season being a wash-out, Mid Canterbury’s Hawke Cup cricket team went on to earn themselves a Hawke Cup challenge against Southland.

They won outright against Otago Country, beat North Otago on first innings and drew against Southland in their zone matches, to top the zone. In their Hawke Cup challenge – the highest level competition for amateurs – they put up a good battle, but fell short, with the game ending in a draw.

Mid Canterbury tennis team For the sixth year running, Mid Canterbury’s rep tennis team won the Browning Shield – the ultimate tennis prize in Canterbury Country. In the 2018 competition they beat North Canterbury 20-4 and Malvern 17-7, before taking on Ellesmere in what was effectively a final and winning

Senior sports team Ashburton indoor bowls team Ashburton’s indoor bowls rep team almost had a perfect season. They played in 11 rep fixtures in 2018 and won nine of them, and on the national scene they placed third in the national final for the sport’s most prestigious award – the Welch Trophy. To get to the national finals, they won the Paterson Trophy against Canterbury, Nelson, Golden Bay, West Coast and Marlborough.

Celtic A netball Celtic’s top netballers couldn’t have done much better if they’d tried in 2018. They

14-10. The team was made up of 18 players and two Mid Canterbury players topped the competition’s statistics, winning eight games from eight.

Mid Canterbury United football They started the season with the aim of gaining promotion from Mainland Football’s division two competition, to division one, and they did it comprehensively. Mid Canterbury United went through the entire season unbeaten to win division two, scoring 75 goals and only conceding four in the regular season. They then scored a further 20 goals and only let one goal in, in the final part of the season, to finish with an impressive goal difference of 80 goals.

Junior sports team Celtic U18 rugby The winners of the Leigh Mackintosh Trophy, the Combined Ellesmere/Mid Canterbury competition, the Kevin Dwyer Memorial Trophy and the Rudstone Cup, Celtic were unbeaten throughout the season. They won 15 games from 15 outings and scored 662 points for, and only conceded 223. Limited numbers meant most weeks they played with only two or three reserves, which required the players they did have to be both physically and mentally strong.

Rowing U18 girls’ coxed quad The Ashburton College girls’ coxed quad did exceptionally well, particularly when you took into account they had a novice rower in their team. At the pinnacle event on New Zealand secondary schools’ rowing calendar, the Maadi Cup, they finished fourth overall. At the South Island Secondary Schools’ Championships they took out the silver medal.

Smallbore rifle team At the Target Shooting NZ postal challenge, the NZ Secondary Schools’ Shooting postal match and the inter-island secondary school shooting competition, Ashburton College’s smallbore rifle team was the number one team in New Zealand. The team won the South Island secondary school title for the third year running, and for team member Lanelle Millar-McArthur it was the fourth year running she’d been part of the winning team.

Liverpool pull off a stunner NZME The world has gone into meltdown after Liverpool’s stunning win over Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League yesterday.

Divock Origi was the unlikely hero for the Reds as they became just the third team in the competition’s history to come back from three goals down after the first leg of a semi-final, roaring back to life with a 4-0 second-leg victory to complete an unbelievable 4-3 aggregate triumph.

The odds were stacked heavily against Liverpool after star players Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were ruled out with injury following a 3-0 first-leg defeat last week in Spain.

But Origi gave Liverpool hope with a seventh-minute goal at Anfield before Georginio Wijnaldum scored two quick second-half goals to level the tie, setting the stage for the Belgian to strike the decisive fourth goal 11 minutes from full-time.

The final goal was the result of something truly special from young gun Trent Alexander-Arnold, who pretended to walk away from a corner to let a team-mate take it, before turning around quickly and whipping in a low cross that found an unmarked Origi, who finished brilliantly.

Barcelona defenders were like statues, failing to react to what Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp called a “genius moment”.

Wijnaldum said the Liverpool players had the belief they could come back in the tie despite the first leg scoreline.

“Unbelievable. After the game in Spain, we were confident we could score four at home,” he told BT Sport.

I was really angry at the manager that he put me on the bench but I had to do something to help the team when I came on.”

It loomed as an impossible task, recovering from a three-goal deficit after the opening leg but the miraculous 4-0 win at home now means Liverpool is headed for the Champions League final, and football supporters lost their minds.

Former Wallabies coach Alan Jones has blown up in a furious on-air tirade after Israel Folau was found guilty of a “high level” breach of his contract on Tuesday night before the rugby star sent the broadcaster a message, breaking his silence on the verdict.

A three-person independent panel of chair John West QC, Rugby Australia (RA) representative Kate Eastman SC and the Rugby Union Players’ Association-appointed John Boultbee handed down the verdict and have now retired to decide on Folau’s sanction following an epic code of conduct hearing in Sydney.

RA boss Raelene Castle issued Folau with a breach notice last month following his controversial social media posts about homosexuals and other sinners and threatened to tear up his fouryear, $4 million contract.

While Folau may yet be spared the sack, termination of his contract is now a possibility.

After defending Folau on the airwaves yesterday, Jones – who coached the Wallabies in the 1980s and now hosts 2GB’s popular breakfast radio show – relayed a message he said he’d received from the Wallabies star.

“I’ve just had a note from Israel, he won’t mind if I’m sharing it with you because I said to him, ‘Hold your head up’,” Jones said.

“He said, ‘Alan, I’m at peace, mate. My head is held high’.”

That message came after Jones said the “Orwellian treatment” of the rugby icon, combined with various recent attacks on politicians, painted a grim picture of the state of Australia.

“The Australia that our Anzacs fought for seems to be disappearing before our very eyes,” Jones said. “It prompts you to wonder what kind of society we’re living in.

“Nothing wrong with Israel, it’s the society and those who prosecute him who are sick.

“But the cancer won’t kill us, it’s the cancer that will be removed, not Israel. The Australian people won’t accept this.

“This is not the Australia our veterans fought for and we’re going to have to take our country back by argument and by the democratic and peaceful process – not by hate and revenge or vilification and intimidation.”

Jones continued saying he is now “ashamed” of the sport which he once played an integral role in.

“Israel Folau, with my support and the support of millions of Australians, will take this fight every inch of the way,” Jones said.

“Rugby union preaches diversity – they really mean uniformity.

They preach inclusion but they exclude Israel.

“We take oaths of office in every court of the land. The Prime Minister is sworn in with his hand on the Bible – the same bible which Israel Folau has quoted and he’s now had his dignity, his integrity, his employment, his vocation and his income stolen from him.”

Industry rumours were confirmed on Tuesday, when it was announced the two-time New Zealand Cup winner would stand at Yirribee Pacing Stud, near Wagga Wagga.

Though New Zealand based studs missed out on the rights to the Bettor’s Delight stallion, he will be available to breeders here for a stud fee of $10,000+GST. Lazarus will stand for a fee of $A10,000, including GST, in Australia, where he will stand beside fellow New Zealand-bred, Tin Tin In America.

In a ground-breaking result, it was not an Australian stud that beat out its New Zealand counterparts in securing the Down Under breeding rights to Lazarus.

The Interdominion winner has been backed by the New South Wales Harness Racing Club, which operate Menangle raceway.

Woodhouse said one of the major benefits of the newly secured deal was that the profits Lazarus’ service fees would be injected back into New South Wales harness racing by the New

South Wales Harness Racing Club.

“The big thing is that Menangle will reinvest any profits they make in to the industry, it is not going to America or anywhere else.”

Lazarus would have a limit placed on the amount of mares he would serve across Australasia this spring, but that number is yet to be set.

It would be formalised once the horse arrives in Australia from New Jersey in August.

“Until he gets here and [veterinarian] Angus McKinnon from Goulburn Valley has a look at the semen we won’t know,” Woodhouse said.

“We haven’t really decided what our cut-off will be, but we will have a number on him.”

Reports from North America, where Lazarus has started his Northern Hemisphere stud career, suggest his semen is as potent as he was on the racetrack.

“They say his semen is fantastic, it is unbelievable,” Woodhouse said.”

“He has served a full book up there in the US and I am expecting the same down here.”

Ghibellines heads White Robe Lodge roster White Robe Lodge have announced a slight fee increase for exciting young sire Ghibellines, who will stand for a fee of $6,000+GST for the forthcoming breeding season.

The Group Two-winning son of Shamardal has made a promising start to his stud career, with two winners and a stakes performer from just seven runners to date and has been represented by a host of promising horses at the trials.

“Live Drama looks really impressive and I know Lance Robinson is talking early Guineas races,” White Robe Lodge Stud Manager Wayne Stewart said.

“There is also Ranger who was placed in the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1600m) for Debbie Sweeney and Roger James has a very high opinion of Minnalllines, who finished second to subsequent stakes winner Rainbow Dash at her only start.

She won a trial impressively on Monday.

“There is a good vibe about them. He has had a lot of trial winners and Te Akau have a smart filly called Crystal Bellini.

He will have quite a few more runners in the next month or two.

“He has just got a lot happening and it is all good positive feedback. They are showing good natural ability and they were always going to be better autumn two-year-olds and spring threeyear-olds.”

Staying influences Raise The Flag ($6,000+GST) and Gallant Guru ($4,000+GST) complete the roster for the Mosgiel nursery.

“Raise the Flag has had good results this year with Orepuki Lad who won the Invercargill Cup (2600m) and the Dunedin Cup (Listed, 2400m) and looks like one of the more exciting

stayers in New Zealand at the moment,” Stewart said.

“There is still a lot of interest from Australia in his stock. You have Yogi winning the Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m) and he has won in excess of $600,000 and Chequered Flag certainly looks a potential jumping star in the making.

“Gallant Guru keeps on producing good bread and butter horses week in and week out.

“He’s had a good season with Patrick Erin winning the Metropolitan (Gr.1, 2400m) and will stand at $4,000.

“Gallant Boy won the White Robe (Gr.3, 1600m) this year too.”

Perfect result for Noble Karaka trainer Lance Noble scored the perfect result at Matamata on Tuesday, taking two horses south for the Waikato club’s meeting and recording victories with both.

Two-year-old Savabeel filly Avadane cleared maiden company when taking out the J P Wills Bloodstock 1200.

She jumped well from barrier three and took the trail behind early leaders Divine Dive and Qiji Melody.

Jockey Leith Innes bided his time before unleashing his charge down the straight where Avadane took the lead at the 150m mark and saw off the fast-finishing Long Jack to win by a short-neck.

“The draw obviously helped and she did get away well and had a lovely ride from Leith. It was really pleasing,” Noble said.

Her win extends her dam J’Adane’s impressive record, with Avadane becoming her sixth winner, which includes Group Three winners Von Tunzelman, Prince Jabeel and Sherrif.

“It was the sixth individual winner out of Brendan and Jo’s (Lindsay) foundation mare J’Adane, so it’s pretty special for them,” Noble said.

“The mare just keeps producing. There is a nice Tavistock colt at home and I look forward to getting my hands on him.”

Earlier in the card four-yearold mare Vera Drake won the Luminateone 1600.

It was the first win in New Zealand for the half-sister to dual Group Three winner and Gr.1 Sydney Cup (3200m) runner-up Vengeur Masque.

The four-year-old mare was purchased by Cambridge Stud principals Brendan and Jo Lindsay in England last year and is destined to join their broodmare band at their Waikato farm.

With the cobwebs now blown out, a couple of teams will be looking for big improvement when round two of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competitions hits the courts tonight.

Round one wasn’t a fun night for all sides, with two premier one teams – Mt Somers and Celtic B – falling to reasonably heavy losses, while it was a similar story for Celtic C and Hampstead B down in premier two.

Tonight, all will be looking to bounce back, but for some that could be easier said than done, with some tough opposition on the cards again tonight.

For Mt Somers, that opposition is Methven A, the side which finished runner-up to Celtic A in 2018, and started 2019 with a loss to that same side.

In round one Mt Somers took on an Ashburton College A side that has already given glimpses that the 2019 season could well be a good one for them, and well and

truly came off second best, going down 41-24.

Round one followed a similar path for Celtic B. They took on Hampstead A and while both have very different sides in 2019 compared to the ones that took to the court in 2018, it was the Hampstead players who found their feet first and took the win 35-18.

Tonight Celtic B have another daunting task in front of them, with College A their next opposition.

Hampstead A also have a tough

job tonight, with their round two opposition being the defending champions, Celtic A. Celtic A beat Methven A in round one to keep up their unbeaten form from 2018 going, and it’s a record they won’t be keen to lose in a hurry.

Hampstead A and Celtic A will kick things off tonight along with Methven A and Mt Somers at 6.30pm, while College A and Celtic B have the 7.30pm round.

In premier two, Southern A will take on Methven B in the

6.30pm round, with Hampstead B and Celtic B, and United A and Ashburton College B playing at 7.30pm.

United A and Southern A were both relegated from premier one during the 2018 season and both started the premier two competition well last week, with United A beating Hampstead 56-10 and Southern A beating Ashburton College B 39-27.

Methven B also started with a good win in round one, downing Celtic C 33-16.
