Big surge in college student numbers

A surge in enrolments at Ashburton College has put pressure on teaching space and teaching resources, says principal Ross Preece.

While most schools anticipate their roll for the year will exceed Ministry of Education estimates, the extra 65 students enrolled at the college this year was certainly at the upper end, he said.

A growing roll was a good problem for any school, but it did come with problems in terms of accommodating the extra pupils, Preece said.

“It’s certainly a pleasing start to the year but in some cases we’ve had to accommodate these students by making some classes larger than we’d like.

There’s definitely not too many free rooms around the school now.”

The extra students were spread across all years.

While the ministry would fund the school to employ additional staff, recruitment would come with its own challenges, he said.

The pool of teachers looking for new positions was never large and at the start of a new school year most would have found jobs, Preece said.

The roll surge comes at the same time as the school has introduced a new pastoral care system, Ako, that puts students into vertical age groups of around 16 – 20 with one staff member assigned to each group. These replace traditional family forms and are designed to create a ‘family’ group across all ages that a student will remain in during their time at college.

Staff had just completed a full day of interviews for the Ako groups and parents he had spoken to after those interviews were very positive about the system, Preece said.

“I talked to a number of parents as they were leaving and there wasn’t one who wasn’t complimentary about the process. Staff went above and beyond during the long day of interviews and say it was an unfailingly positive experience.”

Mayfield School students were busy at the Mayfield Showgrounds yesterday setting up their display for the show which was based on water week, with all classes at the school making art to be put on display.

Show a celebration of rural life

A celebration of all things that are going well in the rural world is what the president of the Mayfield A&P Association is promising for their annual show this weekend.

The association is hosting their 94th show, and president David Whillans says he believes the show could be the biggest and best yet.

“We have had great weather this week and great turnouts from the committee members,” he said.

“Everyone has pitched in to make it what could be the biggest one yet.”

The effects of Mycoplasma bovis have played a small part in the planning of the show, but Whillans says he wants to focus on all the positives that are currently happening in the rural sector.

er competition will likely not go ahead,” he said.

“It is so easy to get caught up in the negatives that are happening but there as are so many positives as well and we want the Mayfield Show to be a celebration of that.”

There have been a few changes to the regular show programme, with the tractor pull now being held over two days, with the heats being held yesterday and the finals will be held today.

“It is going to be really exciting when they get the super modified tractors that run on ethanol started, they can be very noisy,” he said. “We have got in 500 earplugs for the kids as they found it a bit noisy last year.”

Mid Canterbury maintains three strong, individual A&P Shows, something Whillans attributes to each one having their own identity.

“Each show is really individual and that is why they are so well supported,”

he said. “So many areas have been going backwards and losing their shows but Mid Canterbury has always had three good, strong shows that keep on evolving.”

Mayfield has been abuzz with activity this week, with preparations being put in place for the show, with signs directing people where to go in place along the main street, while businesses have placed plenty of support behind the event.

“We have had great support from the local businesses,” he said.

The pet tent for this year’s event has been expanded as the association looks to improve what is already a big drawcard for the show.

“We have doubled the pet tent and that was down to the popular demand,” he said.

“It is one of the busiest areas of the show and is a really big feature and we have made it bigger and better.”

Taking rivalry to new heights

Two Ashburton men who raced each other in last month’s Coast to Coast have taken their friendship and sporting rivalry to new heights: Mount Everest.

The sporting mates are part of a nationwide challenge to climb 8848m this month to celebrate Sir Edmund Hillary’s 100th birthday.

Sam Clements-Stewart and Matt Amos are among 200 Kiwis who have signed up for the Himalayan Trust Summit Challenge, which will also raise funds for Nepal, still one of the poorest countries in the world.

Sam and Matt will not be leaving the country to climb Mount Everest, but will be undertaking several smaller climbs and rides around the South Island to accumulate the 8848m of ascent.

Hillary, who would have turned 100 on July 20, and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers in the world to climb Everest, which they did on May 29, 1953.

Sam said he and Matt were looking forward to the challenge, which had been circulated widely to Coast to Coast competitors.

He has already started the mission by climbing Mount Somers last weekend, in preparation for the Motatapu ultramarathon in Wanaka this weekend and hopes to be one-third of the way after that 10-hour effort.

“That’s 2800m of climbing, so that will be a big chunk of it and get me ahead of Matt.”

Trials need to continue

Raising funds to take gardens to next level

A fertiliser expert who started his life’s work at the Winchmore research farm says an independent voice is needed on the body who will oversee the continuation of long-term fertiliser trials at the property.

Government is selling the research farm but some four hectares that have been part of a 60-year fertiliser trial will be retained and leased by fertiliser industry players.

Dr Bert Quin was a research scientist at Winchmore from 1974-1982 and was involved in all the existing long-term trials as well as initiating long-term research on reactive phosphate rock (RPR) as an environmentally-superior phosphate fertiliser.

He says that to ensure that the accumulated data is not compromised and the trials continue, an independent voice would be needed on the controlling board to ensure integrity of the research.

Quin says his early work at Winchmore showed slow-release reactive phosphate rock (RPR) was able to maintain equal levels of pasture production, and later, with other researchers, that it reduced phosphate run-off and leaching into waterways and groundwater.

He is concerned neither of New Zealand’s farmer-owned fertiliser companies, Ravensdown and Ballance, is doing enough to promote the product.

Instead, they continued to focus on soluble superphosphate, which was contributing to phosphate run-off and leaching and the resulting environmental problems, he said.

Quin said farmers needed to be pressuring their companies to do better on that front.

He said RPR was able to be imported from Algeria and a number of other countries, and the slow-release phosphate was both cheaper and better for the environment.

He remembers the cold winters and flat land were in contrast to his home territory in the Manawatu.

After leaving the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries he worked as a fertiliser consultant, developing new environmentally-protective fertilisers and practices, before commencing the importation of RPR. Quin said the Winchmore fertiliser trial had been running since 1954.

“There is nothing as long lived as it in New Zealand. In fact, it is one of the longest running trials in the world.”

His work there involved soil fertility research, including RPR v superphosphate.

He said that ironically, at the

fertiliser would be a big benefit.

“By and large New Zealand farmers care as much if not more than city folk because they rely on the land.

The wish of every farmer is to leave the land in a better condition than it was when they started farming, but they are not getting the assistance they need and deserve from the fertiliser industry.

“Farmers need to ask their suppliers, can they do better for the environment by changing the types of fertilisers both phosphorus and nitrogen – they were choosing to import, manufacture and sell.”

Quin said more research on mitigation using better choices of fertiliser “at the top of the cliff” was needed, rather than the current focus on “ambulances at the bottom”.

“The single biggest improvement they would do is to switch from using a soluble phosphate to a slow release phosphate.”

time of his arrival in 1974, a demonstration dairy farm under irrigation at Winchmore had just been shut down because there was at the time absolutely no interest in dairying on the Plains.

He now believes Mid Canterbury farmers need to push Ravensdown and Ballance, who command 95 per cent of the fertiliser market, to pursue more environmentally-friendly fertiliser options, especially around the use of RPR. A soluble, slow-release fertiliser would go a long way to reducing phosphorus losses into waterways.

“The importance of that is that phosphate leaching is becoming a massively important issue because of the larger amounts being applied by dairy farmers.”

He said that farmers were, on balance, doing a good job to protect water quality given the tools they had.

Adding a slow-release RPR

The generosity of a group of Mid Canterbury people provided the seed funding needed for the community to become owners of internationally recognised Trotts Gardens.

Eighteen months ago Alan and Catherine Trott sold the four hectare property to the Trotts Garden Charitable Trust, effectively putting it in community hands. Since then the garden has been maintained by a large team of volunteers.

The trust is now keen to take the gardens to another level, trustee Robin Kilworth said and is launching a fundraising campaign to ensure the property is on the strong financial footing that will allow staged development over the next few years.

To raise those funds, the trust has created a campaign with a twist, she said.

While the trust is looking for community and public funders, there will be opportunities for the trust to give back to donors. The funding package includes opportunities to name a garden for a loved one or in memory, as well as use of the EA Networks Pavilion, the Brantwood Chapel or the garden itself.

Those opportunities will also be available to donors who give gifts in kind rather than cash.

The fundraising campaign will be launched with a dinner on March 22 in the EA Networks Pavilion.

This will provide an opportunity for friends and supporters of the gardens to view a video about the property from its humble beginnings as a barren paddock to where it is today.

The evening will begin at 5.30pm with a tour of Trotts Garden and continue with dinner at 6.30.pm Tickets are available from rpmc@xtra.co.nz

AgriKids extend schools’ records When it comes to rural life, no one has a better understanding of what makes that life tick than students at Ashburton Intermediate and Mt Somers/ Springburn schools.

Both schools won berths in last year’s national final and both have repeated that feat this year.

The intermediate trio of Charlie Scammell, Isla Connelly-White and Hamish Paton won the Aorangi title, while the Mt Somers Springburn team, the Mighty Merinos team of Lachlan Rooney, Ruby Giera and James Clark, placed second. Both Lachlan and Ruby were members of last year’s team.

Mt Somers Springburn’s High Country Heroes, Bailey Protheroe, Issac Giera and Leo Acland, made it into the final seven.

Ruby Giera scored a double in the event taking the overall Agrikid Competitor of the Day. This award goes to the participant who showed the most enthusiasm, team work and manners.

Three tourists killed in head-on Three Chinese tourists have been confirmed dead as a result of the horror headon crash yesterday.

A further five people were hurt in the two-vehicle collision, police said.

Two people had serious injuries and three others had minor to moderate injuries.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Braemar Road, between the intersection with Tekapo-Twizel Road (State Highway 8) and Hayman Road, at Tekapo in the Mackenzie Country, at 10.55am.

Three rescue helicopters were sent to the scene.

A Chinese Embassy spokeswoman told Stuff that police told her the three dead were part of a group of five Chinese tourists in a car that collided with a double cab utility.

The two others in the group were currently in Dunedin Hospital, she said.

One of the first people at the scene of the crash near Tekapo says he arrived to a “mangled mess” on the unsealed scenic road that is popular with tourists.

Braemar Station Shearers Lodge owner Hamish Mackenzie said he arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.

“It was pretty horrendous. There were a lot of emergency crew there, and a people carrier sideways on the road, which looked to have had a head-on crash with a double-cab utility.

“The people carrier was untidy, a mangled mess. Emergency crews were using the jaws of life to cut it open. Some guys I

The truck appeared to be carrying forestry workers, he said.

The crash happened about halfway along the unsealed Braemar Road, between Lake Pukaki and Tekapo. It was “quite a dangerous” section on the country road.

“There are a lot of blind hills,” Mackenzie said.

“There have been crashes along Braemar Road before, but not that spot. I have never seen anything that horrendous.”

driving conditions, Mackenzie said.

The scenic road was becoming increasingly popular with tourists.

“There are views of the Southern Alps, it is pretty scenic and so more tourists are coming along the road, but it is also a country road so needs to be treated with respect.

“This kind of thing shakes the hell out of the community. I’ve already had a number of phone calls checking it wasn’t us. I know a lot of the emergency crews too, they are all volunteers. It is all pretty humbling.”

Mackenzie District Mayor Graham Smith said he was devastated by the news.

“My biggest sympathy goes out to all

those concerned and those families that have been caught up in this,” he said.

“I send my grateful thanks to the emergency teams that attended. They have had to deal with a very tragic accident.”

Smith said Braemar Road was a shingle road.

“It is a back road that runs from State Highway 8 through to the edge of Pukaki. It is not that busy, but it is one of those roads that you have to stay a car and a half behind and mind where you drive.

“It is reasonably narrow in places, so you have to be conscious and look ahead, and careful to stay hard left on corners.

“I don’t know what has gone wrong, but it is extremely tragic. I know my community and I know they will be devastated by what has happened.”

Braemar Station Shearers Lodge owner Julia Mackenzie said hearing the news about the fatal crash just down the road was “awful”.

She said it was not a particularly dangerous road, but was being increasingly used because of its spectacular views.

“It is not a particularly dangerous road, it’s a road we use all of the time, but the section where they crashed there are a lot of rises, up and down.

“It is one you really need to stick left on.”

The triple fatal crash took the number of people who have died on New Zealand roads this year to 65.

This was slightly lower than last year, with 70 people having lost their lives at March 7, 2018.

Murder accused’s name suppressed

By Sam Hurley The man accused of murdering British backpacker Grace Millane will keep his name suppressed, preventing New Zealand media from naming the alleged killer.

The now 27-year-old Auckland man appeared in the High Court at Auckland last month in a bid to convince Justice Simon Moore that revealing his identity would prejudice his fair trial rights.

Yesterday the judge released his decision to the media.

The judgment and the reasons given by Justice Moore have been suppressed.

He did, however, allow the media to report that he had continued name suppression “because I am satisfied that publication of the defendant’s name would create a real risk of prejudice to the defendant’s fair trial rights”.

“The suppression orders I have made are not permanent. They will remain in place for as long as the court is satisfied it is necessary to do so. They will be the subject of review,” he said.

The name suppression hearing had been held behind closed doors, preventing members of the public from attending.

Several members of the media, however, were present as was the officer in charge of the case, Detective Inspector Scott Beard.

The arguments made at the hearing by the defendant’s lawyer Ian Brookie, the Crown Solicitor at Auckland Brian Dickey, the Herald, and Stuff were suppressed by Justice Moore.

Grace Millane When the defendant first appeared in the Auckland District Court after his arrest in December, Judge Evangelos Thomas declined granting interim name suppression.

However, the accused kept his name out of New Zealand media after Brookie indicated an appeal. Such an appeal automatically imposes a 20 working day suppression order under New Zealand law.

Because of the closure of courts over Christmas and New Year the name suppression hearing wasn’t heard until last month.

Brookie had initially sought to appeal Judge Thomas’ decision but decided to abandon the process and instead he made a fresh application for name suppression.

He did so on the basis of fair trial grounds as a result of events between his client’s first appearance and transfer to the High Court.

Despite the suppression order, some British media named the accused in its papers, online and on-air.

The Herald later revealed two London newspapers’ explanations for naming the accused, after objections were raised with the UK papers by a close friend of the Millane family.

“Whilst [we] takes into consideration the laws of other countries when it comes to naming suspects/those charged with a crime and the names of victims of crimes we should stress that the law in New Zealand does not apply to our reporting,” one broadsheet replied.

Internet behemoth Google also breached the order when it named the accused in its “what’s trending in New Zealand” mass email to New Zealand subscribers.

The email also said there had been more than 100,000 searches on its search engine of the man’s name.

The Google breach led to a meeting with Justice Minister Andrew Little, Attorney-General David Parker, and executives from the Silicon Valley-based company.

Social media users on Twitter and Facebook also published the man’s name.

The accused is charged with murdering Millane between December 1 and December 2 last year, court documents viewed by the Herald show.

He pleaded not guilty at his first High

Court appearance and a trial was set for November. Millane, a university graduate, came to New Zealand in November last year as part of a year-long solo OE. She arrived in Auckland just days before she was killed and was last seen alive on CCTV entering CityLife Hotel with the accused on December 1.

According to court documents, the defendant was living at the Queen St hotel.

Millane’s body was later found in a section of bush just 10m off Scenic Drive in West Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges on December 9.

She would have turned 22 a week earlier.

A post-mortem examination was completed but police have not publicly released its details.

Detectives, however, confirmed Millane’s body was found intact.

Her funeral was held earlier this year after her body was returned to Essex in England.

David Millane, Grace’s father, earlier said his “whole world turned upside down” when his daughter was declared missing and later found dead.

“Grace was not born here and only managed to stay a few weeks, but you have taken her to your hearts and in some small way she will forever be a Kiwi,” he said.

A relative of the accused also spoke to the Herald in December.

They said their entire family were also broken-hearted – and they were sorry for the Millane family’s loss.

the veil of silence David White can never forgive the killer of his daughter Helen Meads, but does not hate him.

As part of his road tour campaigning against family harm, he visited Ashburton this week and talked to reporter Susan Sandys.

avid White has a fire in his belly and a light in his soul.

The 74-year-old will talk to anyone willing to hear his message, and he will talk for as long as they will hear him.

He goes to schools, prisons, media outlets, and venues packed with crowds eager to hear his story. He will talk for as long as it might take to create some sort of change, change towards a society which does not tolerate violence in families.

White is now on a road tour of New Zealand, taking in each of the country’s 71 electorates. He spoke to more than 100 people at a public meeting at Hotel Ashburton on Thursday night.

His campaign began with a terrible tragedy, the loss of his daughter Helen Meads in 2009. Helen was shot by her husband, wealthy horse breeder Greg Meads, in their Matamata stables.

White visited Meads in prison for the first time last year to sort through legal issues and begin rebuilding the family for the sake of his grandchildren.

He told his former son-in-law that he and wife Pam did not hate him, and they were no longer angry.

“Because those two emotions were killing us.”

However, he also told Meads to never expect them to forgive him.

“That’s never going to happen.”

The agony of the meeting was at least made better by indications Meads was going through the process of understanding the damage he had done to his children and family.

“He had the guts to say to me ‘I don’t forgive myself’,” White recalled.

In the book Helen, The Helen Meads Tragedy, White goes through what happened that September morning, four days after Helen informed Meads she was leaving him. White’s account is an assessment from what he knew personally and from the evidence at the scene. It was an account which altered from that given by Meads in court as he unsuccessfully tried to convince the jury that the murder was an accident.

“I would say that from the moment Helen told him she was leaving, she was living on borrowed time,” White began.

He then recounted how Meads would have planned the day, taking into consideration it would have to be when White was home to take care of Helen’s and Meads’ young daughter.

“Helen always had my days off marked on her calendar hanging in the kitchen, he checked it and saw how it suited him well. That week I had the Tuesday and the Wednesday off, he went for the Wednesday, which gave him two working days to set it up,” White continued.

Meads then set about making sure the stable worker Shaun would be off site and Helen would be mucking out the stables.

“It gave him all the time he needed.

“Helen was alone in the barn and had time to ring Annette (her friend) and talk about the new life ahead of her. Meads returned quickly to the house, there was no time to waste. He took the loaded shotgun to the stables but was temporarily held up by hearing Helen on her phone. He held back at the door and waited for her to end her conversation, as he could not allow the person she was talking to to become aware of what was about to happen in the stables.

“He could not risk any sort of a witness as he needed it to look like an accident.

Nor could he go in where Helen was working as she would have seen him coming, and she would have most definitely defended herself. When she walked up to put the mucking-out fork back in its place, he stepped out and shot her without saying a word, putting the barrel against her throat to be sure that he didn’t miss or give her time to duck away. He caught the used cartridge as he ejected it and threw it at where she lay. The job was done as planned.”

Meads then closed the barn, and rang his father to tell him what had happened.

He waited for Shaun to return and when he did, said “I’ve shot Helen. She is dead.”

It is heart-breaking to hear a father relay such a cold and calculating act reaped upon his daughter. Helen had been beaten before, and despite her father’s pleas to leave her husband, she could not, her answer always being the same – she was more afraid of what he would do to her and her children by leaving. It was easier to stay, it was safer and better for everyone.

But the silence surrounding these types of situations in society is the real killer, and it is time people stood up for the victims, White said.

“It’s impossible to expect battered women to step up and leave.

“The saying ‘It’s okay to ask for help’, that’s ridiculous, often they just can’t. I change it to ‘It’s okay to be the help’.”

In a second book Family Violence – Lifting New Zealand’s Dark Cloud, White berates himself and Helen’s mother for having worked around their son-in-law’s controlling behaviour.

“We failed to recognise that his actions in isolating her from friends and family, his jealousy of her friendships and his pathetic bouts of sulking or arguing when she did go out are among the danger signs of a violent relationship.”

His advice for those who know someone in this situation is to be that person they can trust, and help them reach out to police or support agencies, and Women’s Refuge where there are skilled operators who can judge situations and provide advice at the 24-hour crisis line, 0800733843. And in the situation of real or threatened physical violence, dial 111.

Breaking the veil of silence can begin at the individual level, and it can also be un-

dertaken at the wider level of transforming whole communities.

White refers to the Ruapehu Whanau Transformation project.

“Many communities have violence free campaigns, but what they did across Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru sets them apart,” White said.

Community members consulted, and identified the five main areas for improvement – employment, education, health, housing and social. They classified 23 solutions, set a five-year plan to achieve them, and they achieved these with a resultant decrease in family harm.

White is also full of praise for the multi-agency approach afforded by the police’s Integrated Safety Response pilot, which ensures the immediate safety of victims and children and works with perpetrators to prevent further violence. Since its introduction in Christchurch in 2017, there had been no deaths attributed to family violence within cases it had dealt with.

Such a system would have picked up a victim like Helen through the previous incidents of Meads battering her, and most likely saved her life.

White remembers the daughter he lost as someone he was incredibly close to, as someone who easily attracted people to her and consequently had many friends.

She was the daughter who had everyone they knew calling him by the nickname she gave him – Fred. She was the daughter who warmed people’s hearts with her trademark layer of cheekiness, the daughter who loved horses and had a huge passion for life.

It is the injustice of her death that feeds that fire in his belly, and her memory that gives him that light in his soul.

Manafort jailed for 47 months US President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been sentenced to less than four years in prison – far shy of federal sentencing guidelines – for financial crimes uncovered during Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election.

US District Judge TS Ellis imposed the 47-month sentence on Manafort, 69, during a hearing in Alexandria, Virginia, in which the veteran Republican political consultant asked for mercy but did not express remorse for his actions.

Ellis also ordered Manafort, who was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair, to pay a fine of $US50,000 and restitution of just over $US24 million.

Manafort was found guilty by a jury last August of five counts of tax fraud, two counts of bank fraud and one count of failing to disclose foreign bank accounts.

While prosecutors had not recommended a specific sentence, they had cited federal sentencing guidelines that called for 19-1/2 to 24 years in prison.

The sentence was even less than the 4-1/4 to 5-1/4 years in prison that the defence lawyers had sought.

Some legal experts expressed surprise over the leniency of the sentence.

Ellis had also faced criticism by some in the legal community for comments he made during the trial that were widely interpreted as biased against the prosecution.

Ellis, appointed to the bench by Republican former President Ronald Reagan, called the sentence “sufficiently punitive,” but noted that Manafort’s time already served would be subtracted from the 47-month sentence.

Manafort has been jailed since June 2018.

Manafort faces sentencing in a separate case next Wednesday in Washington on two conspiracy charges to which he pleaded guilty last September.

While he faces a statutory maximum of 10 years in the Washington case, US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson potentially could stack that on top of the sentence imposed in the Virginia case, rather than allowing the sentences to run concurrently.

Former Australian horse trainer John Nikolic has been sentenced to 23 years in jail for importing cocaine into Fiji on his luxury yacht. He and wife Yvette were arrested after Fijian authorities discovered more than $A20 million worth of drugs, along with two guns, on their vessel, Shenanigans, as it arrived in Port Denara in June.

While Ms Nikolic was acquitted on all charges, Mr Nikolic was last week found guilty of drug importation, possession, and failure to declare arms and ammunitions to a customs officer following a trial at the High Court in Suva.

Venezuela blacked out

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was convicted of hiding from the IRS millions of dollars he earned from his work advising Ukrainian politicans.

Manafort, who opted not to testify during his trial, told the court that “to say I have been humiliated and ashamed would be a gross understatement”. He described his life as “professionally and financially in shambles”.

Manafort was convicted after prosecutors accused him of hiding from the US government millions of dollars he earned as a consultant for Ukraine’s former pro-Russia government.

After pro-Kremlin Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s ouster, prosecutors said, Manafort lied to banks to secure loans and maintain an opulent lifestyle with luxurious homes, designer suits and even a $US15,000 ostrich-skin jacket.

Manafort, with noticeably greyer hair than just months ago, was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair holding a cane, wearing a green prison jumpsuit emblazoned with the

words “Alexandria inmate” on the back. It was a far cry from his usual dapper appearance and stylish garb.

Manafort is the only one of the 34 people and three companies charged by Mueller to have gone to trial.

Several others including former campaign aides Rick Gates and George Papadopoulos, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen have pleaded guilty, while longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone has pleaded not guilty.

Manafort worked for Trump’s campaign for five pivotal months in 2016 that included the Republican National Convention where Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination, three of them as campaign chairman.

Good Samaritan enables $273m lottery win An unemployed New Jersey man who won last Friday’s $273 million Mega Millions jackpot said he wants to reward the mystery person who returned the tickets to a store where he’d left them a day earlier.

Mike Weirsky said at a news conference with lottery officials Thursday that he bought the tickets last Thursday at a Quick Check store in Phillipsburg, near the Pennsylvania border, and left them there because he was more focused on his cellphone.

Someone found them and gave them to the store to hold. When Weirsky returned on Friday, he verified the tickets were his and store employees returned them.

Lottery officials said Thursday that if the person who found the tickets had held onto them and signed them, they could have claimed the jackpot.

“I’m looking for the guy that handed them in, I want to thank him,” Weirsky said. “I’m going to give him something, but I’m going to keep that private.”

Weirsky says he’s going to “sit back and enjoy” the money. He said the first thing he’s going to do is buy a new pickup truck, then buy his mother a new car and pay to remodel her home.

“After that I’m basically locked in to what my lawyer and other people I have working for me tell me I can do,” he said.

Weirsky, who has been playing the lottery for years, said he checked the tickets at home on Sunday and saw he’d matched the numbers, but couldn’t quite believe his eyes. He went back to the store during Sunday night’s snowstorm and got the news.

“I couldn’t believe I was the winner of more than $2 after playing after all these years,” he said.

Lottery winner Mike Weirsky wants to thank the person who handed in his winning ticket.

A major power outage has hit crisis-stricken Venezuela, a problem the government of President Nicolas Maduro quickly blamed on “sabotage” at a hydroelectric dam that provides much of the country’s power.

Electricity outages are frequent in Venezuela, where the economy is collapsing under hyperinflation, with chronic shortages of food and medicine and a mass emigration of more than three million citizens.

Critics say corruption and under investment have left the country’s power grid unable to function, while Maduro says the problems are intentionally created by political adversaries.

Normal ops resume US analysts say North Korea appears to have restored normal operations at a long-range rocket launch site it partially dismantled last year as part of disarmament steps. Some experts say North Korea is trying to convey displeasure over the breakdown of a summit last week between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump over what the Americans said were Kim’s excessive demands for sanctions relief. North Koreafocused website 38 North said commercial satellite images from March 6 indicate that the launch site appears to have returned to “normal operational status” following rapid construction to rebuild a launch pad and a rocket engine test stand.

After falling for a decade, knife crime is on the rise in Britain.

There were 285 knife homicides in England and Wales from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018, the highest number since comparable records began in 1946. The number of people admitted to hospitals with blade injuries rose 8 per cent.

Knives are the most common weapon used in slayings in the UK, where guns are tightly restricted.

Queen posts on Instagram Queen Elizabeth II has posted her first Instagram image. The media-savvy queen posted from the Science Museum Thursday to help promote the museum’s summer exhibition. Using an iPad, she shared an image on the official royal family Instagram account of a letter from 19th century inventor and mathematician Charles Babbage to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The queen’s post said: “In the letter, Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert about his invention, the Analytical Engine, upon which the first computer programs were created by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron.”

What appears to have been a woefully misguided attempt at humour turned into a national embarrassment for the Southern California city of Newport Beach, leaving behind outrage, disbelief and finally, hope for change.

On Thursday, the stepsister of Anne Frank visited privately with students who attended the party and described an emotional meeting in which she recounted her experiences at the Auschwitz death camp.

When she was freed at 16, Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss, now 89, was left with only her mother. The rest of her family perished.

When the students saluted the swastika at the party last weekend, “they didn’t realise what it really meant,” she said. “They just thought it was a joke.”

They apologised profusely during the meeting, which also included parents, community members and student leaders from Newport Harbour High School.

Schloss said she hoped there would be

more education about the Holocaust and a war now 75 years in the past. The photo was a reminder that the warning of the Holocaust – never forget – sometimes is.

The students “don’t realise what those signs really mean to victims who have gone through this period,” she said.

She expressed confidence that the students “have learned a lesson for life”.

The photo shocked the wealthy seaside enclave known for its beaches and placid streets dotted with palms. Hundreds of people came to a meeting at the school Monday to express outrage.

“I thought it was horrible what they did,” Alan Ramirez, a 15-year-old sophomore at Newport Harbour, said.

He said he was disappointed because the photo gave the school a bad image, but he did not think any of those involved were actually embracing Nazism or intending to vilify Jewish people. Rather, he said, they were “caught in the moment, going with the crowd”.

A mother of two students who attend Newport Harbour said she and her children were appalled by the photo, and most of the student body felt the same way.

School Principal Sean Boulton declined to discuss the actions of specific students but said “society as a whole has normalised hate language and hate speech”.

“They got caught up in a larger national issue,” he said.

Like Frank, the world-famous Jewish diarist who died in the Holocaust, Schloss and her family went into hiding in Amsterdam during World War Two but were betrayed. They were sent to the Auschwitz death camp. She was eventually liberated by the Russian army in 1945.

Schloss, whose mother married Frank’s father, Otto Frank, in 1953, has told her story in talks to schoolchildren and in books including Eva’s Story: A Survivor’s Tale by the Stepsister of Anne Frank.

Frank was born in Germany and fled to the Netherlands with her family as Adolf Hitler rose to power.

After Germany invaded the Netherlands, her father created a secret living space where she kept her now-famous diary for two years before being discovered. Frank died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at age 15.

High-speed Italy-France link hits bump A dispute in Italy’s coalition over the future of a high-speed rail link with France has escalated suddenly, raising the risk of a government collapse, with one party chief accusing his partner of acting irresponsibly.

The Alpine rail line is backed by the ruling League party but is fiercely opposed by its coalition partner, the 5-Star Movement, which argues Italy’s share of the funding would be better spent upgrading existing roads and bridges.

After League leader Matteo Salvini said in a television interview he would not back

down and his party would “never sign” a decree to block the project, 5-Star chief Luigi Di Maio accused him of threatening to bring down the government.

“He will bear the responsibility before millions of Italians,” Di Maio said in a statement.

“I consider this to be irresponsible behaviour.”

The TAV project (Treno Alta Velocita) is a joint venture between the Italian and French states to link the cities of Turin and Lyon with a 58-km tunnel through the Alps on which work has already begun.

The European Union has pledged to fund up to 40 per cent of costs, Italy up to 35 per cent and France up to 25 per cent.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said that recently updated traffic projections for the line warranted a review of the project’s long-term viability and, if necessary, a renegotiation of the way the funding is split.

He said he had strong personal doubts about the validity of the venture and he would take responsibility for a final decision based on a cost-benefit analysis already carried out by the government. - AP

Stars Wars theme park The Millennium Falcon is blasting off from Disneyland on May 31 with the opening of the California theme park’s massive Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge expansion. Disney Parks said Galaxy’s Edge will open for visitors to Florida’s Disney World Resort on August 29. Galaxy’s Edge is a new 14-acre land at the Disney theme parks, featuring rides and experiences that thrust visitors into the world of the recent Star Wars trilogy and the fight between the Resistance and the evil First Order.

The marquee attraction is a massive replica of the Millennium Falcon where guests can roam the ship.

Woodstock 50 is nigh Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang says the wait is almost over regarding performers for Woodstock 50, despite media reports claiming Jay-Z, Black Keys and others will perform at the event in August. “We are thrilled with all the excitement about Woodstock 50, but we have an obligation to our fans, artists and partners to do things the right way,” Lang said. “We are in the final stages of laying the groundwork.” The original Woodstock concert took place in 1969. It has been reported that Jay-Z, Black Keys, Dead & Company, Chance the Rapper, Imagine Dragons, and others will perform.

Juicy turkey meatballs in tomato and basil sauce

■ Sauce: ■ Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan. Add the garlic and cook over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes until it is golden.

■ Add the tomatoes and basil and simmer for 15 minutes or until it is thick and saucy.

■ Meatballs:

■ Combine the Tegel Fresh Turkey Mince, onion, breadcrumbs, parsley, parmesan, thyme and egg in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Form into small balls with wet hands.

■ Heat a dash of oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook, turning frequently, un-

til they are golden brown and cooked through.

■ Add the sauce to the pan, stir carefully to coat the meatballs then simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.

■ Serve the turkey meatballs and sauce with cooked pasta and seasonal greens.

By ChriS Keall 2degrees has put a new offer on the table. Sign up for one of its unlimited data broadband plans ($85/month or $75 if your contract mobile is with them too) and you’ll get Amazon Prime Video ($12.99/month) free for a year.

My first question for the company’s consumer boss Scott Taylor: will existing customers qualify for the offer?

I asked because this question is always the first question I field about an ISP or pay-TV promo, be it a Netflix offer from Spark or Vodafone, or the latest deal from Sky TV. The answer is almost always “no”, with a murky qualifier that there might be some wiggle-room for make-goods for angry existing customers.

Loyal customers always get wound up. Why do only those who swing around or threaten to leave get the best perks, they ask?

Anyhow, Taylor said the offer was only for new customers.

Existing customers could qualify at the end of their 12-month plan, if they renewed.

Wouldn’t that seem a bit rough, especially if you signed on to 2degrees unlimited broadband last month.

Taylor then said that if existing customers asked, they would get the deal.

Going how far back?

As long as they joined before the

start of the year, though he hinted there might be some wiggle room.

My 2 cents: Let all your customers in on a deal. If you’re not, be transparent about it. And don’t make existing customers hunt for details.

Sure there’s a cost, but there’s obvious room for negotiation given it costs Amazon Prime Video nothing to deliver a trial sub. The service has stuff-all profile in NZ, and the chance to convert tens of thousands of trial customers is worth a lot.

Not to pick on 2degrees. Most companies are guilty of the same thing.

But back to the offer.

Taylor called 2degrees broadband and Amazon Prime Video “the two best-kept secrets in New Zealand”.

And he says his company’s offer comes just as New Zealanders’ are, in his words, tiring of Netflix.

Amazon Prime Video has less on offer than Netflix, but it still has a decent library of 400 TV series and around 4000 movies.

And, like Netflix and Hulu, it has a well-funded effort to produce original series.

Prime Video’s highest profile show, The Grand Tour (starring Top Gear exiles Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond) has fallen a bit flat – possibly because it has a seemingly unlimited budget and its heroes have free rein.

They were much more fun

when they were trying to annoy their producers at the BBC. An adaption of Neil Gaiman’s Amerian Gods comes over as 70s soft porn.

And the at one point muchhyped doco New Zealand All Blacks: All or Nothing, made by a Kiwi production crew, is reverential to the point of dullness.

Still, there’s a lot of content there, and Prime Video is definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already had a graze. A lot of content is included in a Prime Video monthly sub, but some new release movies are pay-per-view on top of that and some of Prime Video’s “channels” like HBO and Showtime require a separate paid subscription to those apps, and a lot of the channel content is geoblocked to Kiwis.

Like other services, Amazon Prime offers a 30-day free trial.

Last quarter, 2degrees said it had 78,000 broadband customers. It has not raised prices since it entered the broadband market in 2016 through buying Snap – and earlier this week it pledged no price rises this year, either.

That was a dig at the larger Spark (around 700,000 broadband customers), Vodafone (around 410,000) and Orcon and Slingshot owner Vocus (around 200,000), all of whom have raised prices over the past few months, pinning the plan on Chorus increases to wholesale pricing.

As a child Nicole Elliot received treatment from a chiropractor and from that moment she was inspired to make a career working with the body.

A year studying health science and four years at Auckland’s Chiropractic College and she knew she’d made the perfect choice.

Today, after working in Dunedin, Tauranga and Timaru, Nicole has set up business in Ashburton. Her aim is to ensure every person who walks through her studio door leaves with a body where every part works in unison.

Treating aches, pains and joints that may not function as they should, comes back to just one thing, having a healthy, functioning spine, she said.

“As chiropractors, we look at the body as a whole, look at getting it functioning and then the pain will go away.”

Education is an important factor in ensuring your body functions as it should, she said.

“It’s important people look after themselves and understand how good their body can feel.”

A spine does not move from fully functioning to improper-

ly functioning in a day and that means the fix is not an overnight one, Nicole said.

When the pain goes, that doesn’t mean taking care of your spine should end, maintenance work is important, she said.

Nicole sees clients in her Havelock Street studio on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and works in Timaru during the rest of the week. She’s been open for business for two weeks and said she was receiving a steady flow of business.

A chiropractor works with people of all ages, from babies to the elderly and adjustable treatment tables means pregnant women can also lie in comfort while their spine is being treated.

Chiropractic services are available through ACC for injuries or privately, with reduced rates after the first consultation for follow up appointments.

Longer term, Nicole is hoping to bring other health practitioners to her workplace and is now looking for a massage therapist.

She’s also keen to expand her practice to include a second chiropractor. This will allow her to take her services into rural centres where she plans to set up weekly clinics.

Tough rules for tourists long overdue Y

esterday’s horrific crash on a shingle road near Tekapo is yet one more reason we absolutely must take a long hard look at what’s happening with tourists on this country’s roads.

Unfortunately, it appears this smash was one more involving tourists and it occurred in a part of the country that has a very high rate of smashes where tourists are behind the wheel.

We’ve got a totally unacceptable situation around tourists and rental cars, and doing something about it is long overdue New Zealand’s roads are not like roads in many tourists’ home countries. In places ours are long, straight and narrow, in others they’re winding and narrow and in yet other places they’re slippery gravel, fine if you know how to drive them. Tourists generally do not.

It’s not our traffic volumes that are the problem, it’s the drivers and the roads themselves.

Imagine living in a country where your main routes were highways, three lanes in each direction with a large central median barrier, imagine never having had to deal with two-way traffic on narrow roads, imagine never having driven a shingle road that winds, dips and crests rises. Then imagine being let loose on a South Island tourist route.

Toss into the mix coming to a

country where people drive on the opposite side of the road and where you may have come off a long haul flight or where you’re trying to cram long travel distances into a short space of time and the potential for disaster rises.

Sadly, tourists are not only killing themselves, they’re killing Kiwis too.

As a frequent traveller of the Fairlie-Tekapo-Omarama highway I’ve experienced first-hand the horrors of tourist driving.

Vehicles that stop in the centre of the road, awed by the splendour of snowy mountains as they enter the Mackenzie Basin, motorists who tail gate because they don’t know the road, motorists who frequently swing onto the wrong side of the road, motorists who are clearly scared witless on winding hills with hidden bends

who brake, stop, speed up without warning.

Driving those roads now is far from relaxing, it’s a life and death drive that requires hyper vigilance.

Finding the answer is a conundrum. Yes, there are tourists who can drive our roads in safety, those from countries where driving on the left is the norm and where country roads are common – but they’re the minority.

Unfortunately making those roads tourist safe will require a broad brush approach, but doing so would wipe out the huge, free travel market on which our tourism industry is growing rich.

It’s the tourists who’re hopping off a plane and picking up a rental vehicle or motor home who are our biggest accident risk. Usually they’re travel-weary

and the vehicles they hire will be quite different to those they drive at home.

Currently anyone with an international driver’s licence can walk straight from the plane and hire a vehicle. That needs to change. We need a competency test and there needs to be a post flight standdown period before a vehicle can be collected.

In simple terms, a tired driver is pretty similar to a drunk driver in that their reaction times are impaired and their thought processes scrambled.

It’ll be a brave politician who is prepared to take our multi-billion dollar tourism industry on, headon and nail their colours to the mast by designing some tough new rules around tourists and rental vehicles. But they’ll get plenty of applause – and probably votes – if they do.

Weeks after the shooting that left 17 people dead at a Florida high school, Governor Rick Scott signed a school-safety bill that

included new restrictions on guns, prompting a lawsuit from the National Rifle Association; the bill raised to 21 the minimum age to buy rifles and created a program enabling some teachers and other school employees to carry guns. Martin Shkreli, the former pharmaceutical CEO who’d been vilified for jacking up the price of a lifesaving drug, was sentenced in New York to seven years in prison for securities fraud.

am so, so, SO disappointed with our local politicians. Yet again I am ready to throw myself into the fires of Mount Doom, be flogged upon the remnants of our iSite or even worse read the Guardian horrorscopes to find joy and meaning in my life.

Why have they managed to break the wide-eyed wonder of a new year, come into my life and rise above the seething tide of mediocrity and not meet my dismal expectations of them.

It all started with the release of a 146-page document detailing the recommended changes to education. Immediately the opposition spokesperson for education – Nikki Kaye – decided to do a Simon Bridges and travel the length of the country, to “listen” to the ordinary folk like you (yip you with the half eaten soggy Weetbix dripping from your mouth as you hang on my every word) and speak about the impact of this latest reform.

Andrew Falloon pounced upon the opportunity to show someone from Auckland what roads look like without traffic jams, and organised a show and tell at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre (smart thinking Andrew to use Government money at a local venue).

So with the welcoming part consisting of Rose on the door, I self-pity-stomped my way upstairs, hoping to have my expectations met. What Andrew and Nikki didn’t know, was I had already had a one-on-one meeting with Jo Luxton earlier in the day.

Jo and I chilled out and discussed the threat of global warming on the times tables and other important stuff – and then she completely wrecked my expectations of politicians – she listened!

Say what I hear you cry from your crocheted blanket because you can’t be bothered getting out of bed. A politician who listens!

Please tell me this is April Fools, or that you have been sniffing the whiteboard pens again.

half-hour conversation with a level-headed, genuine listening MP who finished by saying I can email her anytime with my concerns, and anything education wise she would be happy to take to the minister because she drops into his office every couple of weeks and catches up with him.

I was shattered. Where was the automatic acquisition of arrogance that MPs show once the votes are counted and they’ve had a ride in a Crown limo? I couldn’t find a trace of self-importance, not a sniff of ego, not even a puff of puffery.

I was down, but not out, I knew the National Party MPs wouldn’t let me down. I quickly thanked Jo and saw her to the door, then bolted for the staffroom for a double Ministry of Education coffee and two stale round wines, leftover from last year’s camp.

So after Rose greeted me with a very welcoming smile and a quick comment, I moved into the Bradford Room, armed with my questions to expose the shallowness and egocentric assault I was sure was going to happen.

Firstly Andrew took centre

stage, welcomed everyone, introduced Nikki – and then sat down! He actually said he wasn’t the star of this roadshow and quickly moved aside for Nikki.

I began to doubt my cynical assumptions and longed to see Judith Collins stride through the door, just to feel reassured.

Nikki got up and said she wouldn’t speak for long (yeah right!) and proceeded to outline National Party education concerns and how they match the review document, as well as areas where they would like to work with the Labour Party on this.

What! Did she say they wanted to work across the political divide? Oh no, how can this be?

Where are the spits of poison, the shooting down in flames, the reassuring destruction of someone else’s ideas?

And then she offered to take any questions or comments.

Aha! This was my chance!

Being the shy sort of guy I am, I graciously allowed 2.3 others to speak before I ripped into it, waiting for the arrogant response. There was none, Nikki just listened and replied that she had heard my concern.

Part of me cried. A little part of

my ability to use generalisations to sum up all politicians, withered and died like an apple core in a lunchbox.

Nikki, and Andrew and Jo were nice and listened. Mind.

Blown. Nothing in my previous experience as an uncivil servant prepared me for this sweetness.

First gluten free underwear, now politicians prepared and demonstrating they can listen.

I am so disappointed, most of my attempts at wit, sarcasm and hilariously worded opinion pieces rely on MPs being cold, arrogant, indifferent and out of touch. What will I do now – become a DJ at the local station, work for the Guardian as a sub-editor, or how about I focus on teaching and learning, because it seems the elected ones are doing what we wanted them to do.

Brian Matoramusha played big roles for both Celtic and Mid Canterbury in the 2018 rugby season, but this season he’s taking his talent to Lincoln University.

Brian Matoramusha doesn’t want to look back on his rugby career and have any regrets.

So, the Zimbabwean flyer is stepping it up a notch this season and challenging himself by taking his speed and natural talent from one champion club side, to another.

A key member of last year’s Watters Cup-winning Celtic side, Matoramusha is trading the Celts’ green strip for the blue and yellow of the formidable Lincoln University side – a side that has won the Christchurch premier competition for the past four years on the trot.

Matoramusha knows playing for a champion side in a tough competition will be a huge step up, but he’s ready.

He came to New Zealand three years ago with a goal of becoming a better rugby player, and so far it’s a move that’s paying off.

Matoramusha only played his first game of rugby at 16, having been a footballer and champion sprinter before that growing up in Zimbabwe, but he quickly showed he had natural ability on the rugby field, finding his groove as an outside back.

He came to New Zealand with good mate Shepherd Mhembere and after a season in rural Otago, they moved to Ashburton and found their new home.

After a year with Hampstead, the pair moved to Celtic last year, where Matoramusha made a name for himself on the wing.

Celtic won the Watters Cup for the first time in many years, and both Matoramusha and Mhembere went on to make the Mid Canterbury Heartland Championship side for the first time.

It was a big year for both of them.

But this season, Matoramusha has set himself even loftier goals.

He was eyeing up a red and black strip instead of the green and gold of the Hammers.

“Every year I set goals for myself and usually I don’t tell people my goals,” Matoramusha said.

“But the first one was to make Lincoln University, and after Lincoln University try and play Mitre 10 Cup for the Canterbury side.

“That’s my goal.

“I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but I’m working towards it.”

A man who is always looking to better himself both on and off the field, Matoramusha wanted to take it up a notch again in 2019 so started looking to city clubs and decided to have a crack at making the Lincoln University side.

Lincoln University are on a hot streak, and this year they have a new addition to their coaching line-up in the form of past Mid Canterbury coach Craig Dunlea.

Dunlea coached Mid Canterbury in 2017 when Matoramusha was first invited to train with the

side, although he didn’t go on to make the final squad until 2018.

Although Matoramusha knew there were parts of his game that he still needed to work on, over the past two years his game has definitely gone ahead in leaps and bounds.

“Some people might say I’m rushing it, but if I feel comfortable doing it I’m going to do it.

“It’s about how you feel inside,” Matoramusha said.

“I’m getting older – I’m not getting any younger – and I don’t want to regret it one day, that I didn’t try.”

If you didn’t take a risk, you didn’t get the reward, Matoramusha said.

So far, the risk was paying off.

Matoramusha said he’d learnt so much in the months he’d already spent training with Lincoln University, and he knew it was only just beginning.

The team held a camp and trials last weekend after which their 2019 squad was officially named, and when it was, Matoramusha’s name was there.

He was now looking forward to everything being a part of Christchurch’s top club team involved.

For him, while he was eager to succeed on the rugby field, he also wanted to enjoy what he was doing and continue to learn.

Having started his rugby career much later than a lot of his peers, he was still learning.

He knew there were areas where he could do better and hoped that being in the Lincoln University environment would help him to identify those areas, and improve on them.

His main focus right now is on decision-making, and those moments where you sometimes only have a fraction of a second to figure out what your best option was.

Do you kick, do you pass, or do you back yourself?

And with time and effort, those decisions would become instinct.

With every year Matoramusha had spent in New Zealand so far, his playing ability had improved, and he hoped this season with Lincoln would help him to make that next step up and achieve his next goal of playing for Canterbury.

While he was going to miss playing for Celtic as the club had been like a family last year in what was a huge and successful year for the club, Matoramusha wanted more.

He had dreams and was determined to at least have a go at making them come true.

His ultimate goal was to play Super Rugby, and despite his Zimbabwean roots and links to South Africa, he now saw his future in New Zealand.

His sights were now firmly set on a Crusaders jersey, not a Bulls one.

In brief Probe shocks Hooper Wallabies captain Michael Hooper was shocked to learn of claims the Australian rugby union team had been investigated for match fixing after losing a test match they’d been favoured to win. A report suggested the Wallabies were probed for match fixing several years ago and that a sporting official had recommended the investigation be re-opened.

While the report didn’t specify the particular match, nor suggest the Wallabies fixed any game on Hooper’s watch, the incumbent skipper said he personally – plus his team-mates – had never given anything less than their best efforts while wearing the gold jumper.

Pre-season ramps up

With the club rugby season just around the corner, most Mid Canterbury clubs are preparing to kick off their pre-season campaigns.

But the team that won Mid Canterbury Rugby’s showpiece, the Watters Cup, last season already have their first games of their 2019 season build-up under their belts.

Celtic’s pre-season got under way last weekend with a trip to Timaru for the South Island Marist Tournament.

There, they started with a 1512 win over Invercargill Marist, and in game two they led Marist Albion 12-10 at half-time but went on to lose 35-12.

Coach Shane Enright said a couple of injuries meant they were unable to take to the field for their third game of the weekend, and the two Marist Albion sides consequently finished first and second.

Timaru Celtic finished third and Ashburton Celtic fourth, with Invercargill Marist and Greymouth Marist fifth equal.

Two Ashburton Celtic players made the tournament team – prop Hamish Finnie and second-five Kody Stuthridge.

On Sunday, Celtic will host Geraldine, but before that game kicked off, history will be made when the club’s first ever senior women’s side takes to the field at 1pm for their first pre-season game.

Meanwhile, Southern had been hoping to play their long-standing pre-season fixture against Geraldine this weekend, but with Geraldine playing Celtic that wasn’t a possibility.

Rennie in for Cheika?

Former Chiefs coach Dave Rennie is reportedly in line to replace Wallabies mentor Michael Cheika.

A report from the Sydney Morning Herald claims Rennie is “high on the Wallabies’ coaching list” although current England mentor and former Australian coach Eddie Jones and Wales coach Warren Gatland are said to be the preferred choices among a “dream list” of potential candidates.

The story suggests Rennie’s coaching ability is highly regarded by influential figures at Rugby Australia including new director of rugby Scott Johnson.

Curry ‘better than Richie’ England flanker Tom Curry has been tipped to eclipse All Blacks legend Richie McCaw as “the best-ever seven to play the game”.

The 20-year-old has the ability to walk into any current World XV, according to Sale Sharks captain Jono Ross and he has made an instant impact on the international stage. Curry has taken his first Six Nations by storm, and Ross believes he will be a permanent fixture in the side for years to come. “At the moment he is one of the best openside flankers in the world. He is a fighter who never goes away and he wants to learn and get better.”

Hampstead and Celtic’s senior rugby sides are among those playing in pre-season matches this weekend.

Last year’s combined competition runners-up Rakaia still have one more week to go before their pre-season kicks in to gear, with a game scheduled for next weekend against Kaiapoi.

The first round of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup competition is set to take place on March 30.

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend has dropped captain Greig Laidlaw to the bench for their Six Nations clash with Wales but restored Finn Russell in the flyhalf position after he recovered from a head injury.

Scrum-half Laidlaw will be replaced by Ali Price, with Townsend picking a side he says has “the best chance of winning at the weekend” and making four changes in all.

“Greig is a key member of our squad, although this week we have decided to utilise his leadership and experience off the bench,” Townsend said. Scotland host a Wales side that are unbeaten in their previous 12 tests.

World Cup the real target for players this year

here is a feeling in some quarters, even now only three rounds into Super Rugby, that the mixed performances from the Chiefs (especially), Blues (no change really), Hurricanes and Highlanders will worry the All Blacks coaches as the World Cup approaches.

In reality, they won’t.

The only thing Steve Hansen, Ian Foster, and company will be worried about in the early stages of the competition is the mental and physical wellbeing of their top players.

If anything, the coaches may have more concern about the Crusaders, who are undefeated and appear set for a run deep into the playoffs again.

Statistically, there will be some All Blacks who won’t make the Rugby Championship in July and August which will give a better idea of their form and that’s be-

cause of injuries.

Some won’t make it to Yokohama in September for the first test of a World Cup defence for the same reason.

That’s just part of the game – probably the worst part, most would agree.

But the current selectors have always said that early-season Super Rugby form has little or no bearing to how players react to the different pressures of test rugby later in the year.

And they’re right because history reinforces it.

The All Black-laden Crusaders didn’t make the Super Rugby playoffs in 2015, the year of their repeat World Cup triumph.

Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, and company didn’t start hitting any sort of form for coach Todd Blackadder until halfway through the round-robin and by that stage, it was too late.

It was the first time since 2001

that the red and blacks hadn’t made the finals.

Who were the players standing tallest for the All Blacks in England and Wales in September and October of that year?

Carter and McCaw – both of whom were written off by some pundit as over the hill before the tournament – and Read and Whitelock; Jerome Kaino from the Blues.

Ma’a Nonu and Julian Savea from the Hurricanes.

Similarly, 2011 was a unique year for the Crusaders who played every game away from home due to the earthquakes but who were inspired to do something special for their community and who almost certainly raised their game as a result only to fall at the final hurdle.

Later, the All Blacks were good at home in the Tri-Nations – convincingly beating South Africa in Wellington and Australia in Auckland – but they were poor in

Sam Whitelock the return tests in Port Elizabeth and Brisbane.

A couple of months later they had won the World Cup. The point is, players aren’t robots; they can’t perform at their best for eight or nine months of the year.

Form will fluctuate, but the All Blacks coaches generally get the best out of them and there is nothing like a World Cup to

sharpen minds.

The form of the Chiefs will, and should, worry their supporters because they appear in trouble already this season with three losses, but that has little to do with key All Black Brodie Retallick or midfielder Anton LienertBrown.

Damian McKenzie, who missed the first-round defeat to the Highlanders, has yet to find his groove at No.10 but that’s probably not surprising given that his last seven tests have been at fullback.

The issues at the Chiefs seem deeper than the performances of a few key players; their on-field balance just seems wrong, quite apart from their poor attitude, especially when losing to the Sunwolves.

In other words: don’t panic, All Blacks supporters.

But Chiefs fans: you may be in for a disappointing season.

Big guns’ time to shine Mid Canterbury’s open grade cricket season will come to a close today after the two teams who have proven to be the season’s best fight it out for the season’s final title.

Those teams are the Tech Stags and Lauriston.

The two have been just about inseparable this season, so much so that the first trophy contested this season – the T20 competition trophy – had to be shared between the two after the final ended in a rare draw.

But, Tech have had a slight

edge since then, going on to win the first limited overs trophy – the Pritchard Shield – and going on to be the team to beat in the post-Christmas Muirhead Rosebowl competition.

Two weeks ago, though, their winning run came to an end.

The team that handed them that defeat was the team they’ll again be taking on today – Lauriston.

That four-wicket win at Lauriston was enough to knock the Tech side off the top of the table on run rate heading into last

weekend’s semi-finals.

That put Lauriston up against fourth-placed Methven, and Tech up against Coldstream, and both games went down to the wire.

Lauriston defeated Methven by two wickets while Tech got the better of Coldstream by just two runs.

That’s all water under the bridge now though, and with both Lauriston and Tech likely to field their best possible line-ups today, it really will be a battle of the best.

Both teams have a few notso-secret weapons – Tech has players like Des Kruger who are capable of doing some serious damage with the bat, while Lauriston has a serious strike weapon with both bat and ball in the form of Alex Hooper.

Lauriston might have the most recent bragging rights when it comes to battles between the two, but both teams know that when it comes to a final, anything is possible.

Today’s game will get under way at Lauriston at 12.30pm.

Future of open grade cricket on the table

With an open grade competition featuring just three teams a very real possibility for the 2019/20 cricket season, Mid Canterbury Cricket officials are worried.

They’re so worried that they’ve called an urgent meeting for later this month and are urging all people involved in cricket in the district to get along and make sure their voices are heard, to ensure a solution is found before it’s too late.

Mid Canterbury Cricket cricket manager Mark Medlicott said the organisation was in the very se-

rious position of potentially not being able to provide any adult cricket in the district, which would have a flow-on effect across all grades of cricket.

The withdrawal of Allenton at the start of this season dropped the current competition from five teams, to four, and Methven has struggled to field a team at times this year leading to concerns that another team may be lost next season.

“If we were down to three teams next year … you can’t run a competition with only three teams.

“One team has a bye every sec-

ond week, and they’ll soon lose interest,” Medlicott said.

Medlicott said they wanted to hear from the cricket community, their ideas on what needed to be done across the board, and how best to address the falling numbers in both youth and adult cricket.

“All ideas are on the table, but what we are doing now doesn’t work,” Medlicott said.

He said junior cricket numbers were strong, and it was important those juniors had some form of cricket to aspire to as they grew up.

It was the second year in a row

a meeting of this type had been held by Mid Canterbury Cricket, and although the feeling last time was things were fine to continue on as they were, when it came to crunch time, a team pulled out.

Medlicott said a serious discussion was needed to ensure open grade cricket had a future in the district, and the meeting was about everyone having a chance to have a say.

“The important thing is we need everyone to turn up, because it’s their future isn’t it?”

The meeting will be held at 7.30pm on March 20 at the Ashburton Domain oval pavilion.

After losing a game they felt they should have won last weekend, Ashburton College’s first XI cricket side returns home today determined to make amends.

The Ashburton College side will start day one of its Canterbury youth first XI grade two-day competition game against the Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) second XI at the Ashburton Domain at 10.30am.

Last weekend, Ashburton College fell just short of picking up a win in their two-day game against the CBHS 3rd XI. They started day two trailing by 65 runs and with two wickets in hand, and Ben Middleton finished on 41 while Christian Thompson was not out on 9 as the Ashburton side was dismissed for 160, 56 runs behind on first innings.

CBHS were then bowled out for 123, with the Ashburton bowlers performing well.

Ben Middleton was the pick of them, taking 5/30 off 11 overs, while Tom Middleton took 2/20 off 12 overs.

That meant Ashburton College had a target of 180 to hit if they were to win the game, and they looked on target thanks to some strong partnerships.

But, no one went on to get a big score and the side fell just 28 runs short.

Tom Middleton top scored with 42, with Isaac Bazley adding 32, Angus Jemmett 30 and Devon Flannery 21.

First day washout The Black Caps’ quest to seal another test series win has been made tougher.

Up 1-0 over Bangladesh in their three-test series, the Black Caps will have a reduced scope in which to claim victory in the second test at the Basin Reserve, with rain having washed out day one in Wellington.

Puddles formed on the outfield after heavy rain yesterday morning, with the covers unmoved from the wicket.

While the rain eased, it never completely stopped, with lingering brief showers hanging around.

After an incredibly short inspection at 3.00pm, the umpires called play off for the day – the second straight day of test cricket at the Basin Reserve which has been interrupted by rain, after the final day of the test against Sri Lanka in December was cut short.

Play is set to resume at 10.30am today, but with some showers also forecast, it could leave the Black Caps with the worst-case scenario of having only three days in which to claim a test victory.

Tinwald out to seal title Mid Canterbury’s A grade and A reserve tennis competitions will be looking to bounce back today, after a disappointing showing last weekend.

A serious player shortage last weekend resulted in two of the three scheduled A grade matches being decided without a ball being served, with Hampstead and Southern forced to default, while one of two A reserve matches was also defaulted.

With only three weeks left to go in the season, and one of those

weekends taken up by the Mid Canterbury championship Gala Cup competition, teams have just two rounds left to put points on the board.

In A grade, that leaderboard is currently topped by Tinwald – one of two sides that did have to take to the court last Saturday.

They’re on top with 36 points, with Fairton and Methven the next teams back on 30 points after both picked up maximum points thanks to last weekend’s defaults.

The team that picked up the win in the pre-Christmas competition, Allenton, are now well back in fourth spot on 21 points, meaning it’s now a three-team race.

Top-of-the-table Tinwald are set to take on Southern today, while Fairton play Hampstead and Allenton go up against Methven.

After today’s matches, play will take a break for a week, with the showpiece event on the Mid Canterbury Tennis calendar –

the Gala Cup – set to be played over the weekend of March 16 and 17.

The tournament is open to both affiliated and non-affiliated Mid Canterbury tennis players and people can enter online through the Mid Canterbury Tennis website.

Men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles, will be contested in both A grade and A reserve over the two days.

Entries for the Gala Cup close tomorrow.

Wall makes NZ team Ashburton rower Veronica Wall will get a chance to make her mark on the world stage again this year, after being named in the Rowing New Zealand team for the World Rowing Under-23 Championships.

At the end of a five-day trial at Lake Karapiro, Wall was named in the women’s quad for the worlds, alongside Kathryn Glen, Katie Lush and Laura Glen. Wall rowed out of the Lake Hood based Ashburton Rowing Club and was also now part of the Southern Rowing Performance Centre (RPC) in Christchurch. In the past she has attended the world junior championships. The world under-23 championships were this year being held in Sarasota-Bradentown in the United States from July 24-28.

Storm resolve salary cap issues Melbourne’s salary cap situation is resolved and Cameron Smith is free to play round one after Sam Kasiano took up a three-year deal to join the Catalans Dragons in the English Super League.

Kasiano agreed to the deal late this week, with his arrival expected to be announced by the French club last night.

The move guarantees Smith is free to play in next Thursday’s season opener against Brisbane after speculation the club’s cap issues could keep him out.

Kasiano still had two years to run on his deal at the Storm, believed to be worth around $600,000 a year.

Melbourne will still likely have to foot some of his bill to exit the club, but the move will bring them back under the cap ahead of round one.

Smith, who was the most recent player signed by Melbourne and could have therefore fallen victim of the last-man-in rule, had already sought assurances by the club’s bosses this week he would be free to play.

“I’ve spoken to our CEO and he’s very confident I’m going to be playing round one so that’s all I need – his go-ahead that I’m going to be there,” Smith said.

In a statement that will be music to the ears of the Sea Eagles faithful and coach Des Hasler, the NSW and Australian outside back has played down the prospect of leaving the “insular peninsula”. Trbojevic, as well as brother Jake, will come off contract at the end of the 2020 season, meaning he will be able to sign with rival clubs following the conclusion of the 2019 season on October 31.

You’ve either got morals or you don’t, says Lewis The NRL has endured a nightmare off-season with several incidents landing players in trouble with the law.

And in an emotionally charged message, former player Luke Lewis delivered powerful words to the playing group surrounding offfield behaviour.

Lewis spoke out against comments made by St George-Illawarra Dragons prop James Graham on NRL 360, after he claimed league attracted a certain ‘person-

ality type’ due to the aggressive nature of the game.

Lewis wasn’t happy with those comments from Graham and didn’t bite his tongue when speaking on the subject.

“You’ve either got morals, or you don’t,” Lewis said.

“My morals are: you do not belt a woman. That’s just how it is.

“I’m a proud ambassador of White Ribbon and I just don’t respect any man that goes out and belts a woman. It’s just not right.

“If we’re going to sit there and talk about our game changing and our culture changing, if you’re going to come into the game and get paid ridiculously well and you can’t change your morals because ‘we’ve got to change the culture’ – you’ve got to change the culture mentally.

“You’re the one who’s got to turn up and say ‘I don’t want to belt women, I want to be a different person, I want to be a role model’ and if you don’t want to do it, then

don’t play our game.

“You just treat women with respect and it’s done, you don’t have any dramas.”

The outburst from Lewis hit close to home as he explained just why he felt so strongly about the topic.

“Because I’ve seen my mum (experience) a lot of domestic violence at home.

“I’ve seen my mum get dragged down the hallway by her hair and get bashed. It’s not a good feeling.

“It goes through to the kids and the kids see it all the time, but the only one who’s going to change is the bloke who’s experienced it themselves.

“No one else is going to make me change unless I make the decision to do it.

“How’s it all come out about ‘this is our background, this is that’.

“You either believe in it and you buy into it, or you’re just a grub.

On The Rocks primed to go On The Rocks brought up some big milestones for trainers Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard when he won the Herbie Dykes Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa last month and they are hoping he can continue his winning ways in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) on Saturday.

“It was my first Group One (win as a trainer) and Mike’s 50th, so it was really good,” Gerard said.

“It was a good win, I am very happy with the condition of the horse going into Saturday. It’s not easy, they are never easy, they are Group Ones.

“His work has been super this week and he has done everything that we have asked of him since winning.”

The four-year-old son of Alamosa has been in good form of late, winning the Gr.2 Rich Hill

Mile (1600m) two starts prior at Ellerslie, the venue for Saturday’s contest.

The Group One feature has attracted a star-studded field, which includes five-time Group One winner Melody Belle, but Gerard said she is just concentrating on her own horse leading into the race.

“I am not going to worry about the other horses,” she said.

“If he gets the right trip I think

he’s certainly the horse to do it over 2000m.

“I am never confident, but I am happy at this stage with where he is at and how he has coped with everything.”

Gerard is happy with drawing gate four and said jockey Jake Bayliss has plenty of options from that barrier.

“Drawn four, I just think he can put him anywhere,” she said.

Solid showing expected Sydney trainer Chris Waller is hoping for an ounce of luck with New Zealand-bred mare Shillelagh (right) in the Gr.1 Australian Cup (2000m) being run at Flemington today.

The seven-year-old daughter of Savabeel will jump from a wide gate, but Waller said she will appreciate the step up to 2000m after two unplaced efforts over 1400m and 1800m this time in.

“She has drawn gate 10 of 15 but she loves Flemington and there was nothing wrong with her first two runs,” Waller said.

Big future for Dragon Promising juvenile The Green Dragon impressed his connections with his first-up third-placing at Counties last month and they are hoping he is now on a Group One path. When the 2019 playing roster for the Canterbury Wildcats women’s basketball team came out last week, there were smiles a mile wide around Mid Canterbury.

That was because there were three Mid Canterbury players named in the squad – Tessa Morrison, Sophie Adams and Ashlee Strawbridge.

Morrison – who returned from a stint playing college basketball in America last year – was no stranger to the side, having been a Wildcat for some time.

On her return from America she rejoined the Canterbury women’s side for what was her sixth season, but for Adams and Strawbridge it was the first time they’d made the cut.

Both Adams and Strawbridge were both still at secondary school, with Adams playing for Ashburton College in the Canterbury secondary schools’ Whelan Trophy competition, and Strawbridge playing for Christchurch’s Rangi Ruru.

So for them to make the 15-person squad was a big deal, no matter how much actual court time they saw, Ashburton College senior girls’ basketball coach Mark Douglas said.

Whether they made the travelling

team or not, both girls would train as part of the squad and that would be huge for the future development of both girls, Douglas said.

Both Adams and Strawbridge were part of a group of 20 youngsters who had been trialling for the New Zealand under-17 team, which would this year be coached by former Tall Blacks Pero Cameron.

To work under him would also do wonders for their game, Douglas said, particularly for Adams, because she played a similar style to that of Cameron.

“She will learn a lot from him because of the way he plays,” Douglas said.

Wildcats members mentored young up and coming players around Canterbury and as a Wildcat in the past, Morrison had mentored Adams, and now they would have the opportunity to play alongside each other in the team.

Just what the season held, no one knew, but the players were hoping for better than last year’s efforts which only saw them finish fifth.

This year, with the services of an import from Russia – former Russian under-20 representative forward Marita Davydova – secured for the first time, 2019 was shaping up to be a good one for the Wildcats.

Limiting LeBron’s workload With 17 games remaining in the regular NBA season and the Los Angeles Lakers languishing in 11th in the Western Conference, their playoff chances are growing slimmer by the day.

Now, so are LeBron James’ minutes.

According to multiple reports yesterday, the Lakers will scale back James’ minutes for the remainder of the season.

Yahoo Sports said both the Lakers’ front office and people in James’ camp have agreed to limit the superstar’s minutes, and James may sit out one side of back-to-backs.

James will reportedly play “in the range of 28-32 minutes per game,” having averaged 35.6 minutes per game at 34 years old.

But ESPN later reported a source close to James said that while the team is looking at a 32-minute limit, that number is more of “an advisement” and that “James will have the leeway to play longer to finish out a competitive game should he deem fit, rather than be controlled by a hard cap.”

Lakers coach Luke Walton spoke with ESPN and confirmed, “I will be monitoring his workload from here on out.”

Los Angeles lost 115-99 at home to Denver on Thursday night, despite James passing Michael Jordan for fourth in all-time NBA scoring.

It was the Lakers’ fourth straight loss and dropped their record to 30-35.

James is averaging 27.1 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.0 assists in 47 games this season, which began with high hopes after James joined.

The team had a good start, compiling a 20-14 record after a Christmas Day thumping of the Golden State Warriors.

But James suffered a groin injury during that 127-101 victory and missed 17 straight games.

Adams picked up a knock to the face inside the opening minutes of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s loss to the Timberwolves in a physical contest with his counterpart Karl-Anthony Towns. The Thunder centre was allowed to play with a tissue in his nose, which soon had the attention of a commentator.
