Break-and-enter crime has cost an Ashburton business in excess of $11,000 in the past year.

Police were at Robbie’s Bar and Bistro yesterday morning collecting evidence following the sixth break-in in 12 months, business owner Skip (Nigel) Joyce said.

The building was entered at 11.23pm on Tuesday, alerting security guards.

Joyce was there soon after to be met with an all-too-familiar scene.

“We had five break-ins in six months – each time it costs us $1400 to fix the front door and each time we lose about 10 bottles of alcohol,” he said.

The business’s courtesy van was also stolen and written off last year.

“It’s costing us at least $11,000 a year.”

Joyce, who operates the business with his wife Amanda, is convinced the same group of young offenders has been responsible for the bulk of the offending.

Security footage supports that notion, as does the fact the culprits entered the building the same way on each occa-

sion, with the intent of stealing alcohol, he said. The offenders threw a chair at the back door to gain entry, according to a statement issued by police. “CCTV cameras were in place and it appears that two people have entered the bar and taken alcohol.”

The offenders are described as slim and slightly built, one was wearing a grey hoodie and the other a black hoodie.

It’s Girl Guide biscuit time of year again

Mid Cantabrians with a sweet-tooth, fear not, Girl Guide biscuits are back on the market.

Guides around the region have rooms stacked to the roof with boxes of biscuits, and are eager to share in what is a historic year for the very important fundraiser.

“This is the 60th year of selling the biscuits, and the recipe hasn’t changed once,” said Mid Canterbury biscuit co-ordinator, Elaine Vallender.

“Mid Canterbury girl guides have been selling them from the start and they have always been popular,” she said.

Vallender said the Ashburton Guides have about 700 cartons of biscuits, while in Methven, 200 are ready to go. With an average of 16 packets of biscuits to a carton, nearly 15,000 packets of biscuits need to be sold.

The selling season is set to finish in April, but any leftovers will still be available for purchase.

“Over time, there has been less door-todoor selling and more stalls and pre-orders, but door-to-door is still important,” she said.

The girls learn important lessons around change, handling change and they absolutely love it, said Vallender.

Stalls will be popping up in busy areas around town, with original, chocolate and mini choc available for $3.50 a packet.

“They make great fudge, and the mini ones are perfect for the kids’ lunchboxes,” said Vallender.

Cassie Leary and Ellie O’Neill will be two of the roughly 130 local girls hitting the streets and stalls, selling Girl Guide biscuits this year.

Plan meetings canned

For years they’ve been the meetings that failed to fire so this year, the Ashburton District Council will not be going through the formal consultation process with its draft annual plan.

Consultation on the plan is not required under the Local Government Act, but the council has gone through the process each year to ensure residents understood where their rates money was being spent.

Most meetings most years have attracted far fewer members of the public than council staff and councillors.

This year was a good year to can the draft plan consultation process because very little had changed from the overarching document, the long term plan, said council community relations manager Vincie Billante.

She suggested instead, councillors made themselves available at events or in places where people were likely to gather in

numbers simply to talk about what was planned.

“It would be very low key. There would be no presentations, no staff to talk about specific projects. You could even be meeting people in pubs,” she said.

The long term plan sets the spending and work programme for the coming three years; that’s the Bible the council worked by, Billante said.

When this is reviewed next year the plan in its entirety will go out for public consultation.

Ashburton is not alone in opting not to consult on its annual plan, it’s a practice that is becoming increasingly common among local authorities.

Christchurch City, however, has opted to run counter to the trend, deciding to return to consultations and formal hearings this year.

An average rate rise of 5.73 per cent is planned for the Ashburton District, down from the 11 per cent tipped in the long term plan.

Local bar hit for sixth time From P1 Meanwhile, three vehicles were reportedly broken into overnight on Tuesday.

Police were advised that the driver’s side window of a vehicle on East Street was smashed and a stereo remote taken.

A number of people were reportedly fighting nearby and a member of the public called police.

Vehicles were also broken into on West Street and Wills Street.

Police would like to hear from anyone with any information about the burglary, vehicle break-ins or fighting.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel urged residents to engage with their local neighbourhood support groups and to report all offending to police, no matter how minor.

“Police numbers in a district are determined by the amount of reported crime,” she said.

“People can also help keep themselves safe by locking valuable items in car boots.”

Mum-to-be airlifted to hospital A mum-to-be airlifted to Waikato Hospital during yesterday’s floods has given birth.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to Thames Hospital yesterday morning to transport a woman in labour.

A spokeswoman for the Waikato District Health Board said the mother was exhausted and recovering.

Pilot Dan Harcourt said the woman had been in labour for about six hours when the call was made to chopper her to Hamilton.

He said there had been concern over increasing road closures and surface water delaying her delivery to Hamilton if she was taken by road.

Uatifoti Saofai on a path to the top

When top ranked Pasifika secondary school students from around Canterbury gathered at an annual award ceremony, there was one who stood out from the crowd, Ashburton College 17-year-old Uatifoti Saofai.

She had already been recognised as a high achiever on her own campus and on Tuesday night she was recognised as Canterbury’s top Pasifika student for both her academic achievements and her leadership skills.

No one was more surprised than Uatifoti when her name was called.

“There were 20 secondary schools there, all from Christchurch except me.

“They were all top achievers and when I was announced as joint top female student it came out of nowhere.

“To be honest, this was most unexpected,” she said.

The award was judged on examination results, academic

achievements and school recommendation.

Uatifoti’s family moved to New Zealand from Samoa five years ago because her parents were determined their six children had the opportunity to receive the best possible education.

Moving to a new country and a new culture was quite a shock, however, she said.

“We came at Christmas time so we had a little bit of summer before the cold. We had been learning English at school but not every day language so that was quite difficult at the start.”

For the Saofai family, education is number one.

“Study is my recreation. My parents have instilled in me the importance of education. Other things are opportunity costs really,” she said.

“The focus has to be on school; that’s the main reason we moved from Samoa.”

Her friends are all achievers, and that means they are friendly competitors who push each other

to be the best they can.

Uatifoti enjoys maths, accounting and economics and hopes to study commerce at university.

Ashburton is now home, but she admits there is still a strong pull from the country of her birth.

“Samoa is still close to my heart.

Every day I dream of going back but because New Zealand can provide such a good education, for me it has become my home.

It is such a welcoming country,” she said.

Canyoners access closed off track

Canyoners accessing Sharplin Falls have triggered calls for people being “stupid” to pay for search and rescue costs.

Canyoners appear to be accessing the picturesque waterfalls area on Bowyers Stream at Staveley despite it being closed due to rockfall danger.

Canyoning has a growing following in New Zealand. It involves descending waterways, using a combination of abseiling, jumping, sliding, swimming and scrambling. Canyoners wear helmets, wetsuits and harnesses and use ropes and other technical equipment.

Sharplin Falls, including on a broken gantry, were posted to the KiwiCanyons.org Facebook page in January.

It followed another post from a similar time last year, when another canyoner reported the area as being “good fun, even with the chill”.

The Department of Conservation temporarily closed the Sharplin Falls walkway in February 2015 when a large rockfall destroyed part of the access gantry structure.

The gantry was further damaged by rock falls last year, and the department permanently closed the track last month.

LandSAR Search and Rescue New Zealand director Ron Smith of Methven said canyoning was a

high-adrenaline sport, which he had no problems with, but going into dangerous areas was “ridiculous”.

“If an area says out of bounds, they should not go there, go somewhere where it’s safe,” Smith said.

Searches could cost up to tens of thousands of dollars depending on how long they went for and what resources were used, and Smith believed people caught out in closed-off areas should cover those costs. Currently the government covered all costs no matter what.

Operations manager Dave Winterburn was similarly not impressed with the canyoners.

“To access the track you would have to pass two sets of signage

alerting visitors to the closure and climb over a barrier blocking the track,” Winterburn said.

“For obvious safety reasons people should not use the walkway and the wooden gantry in particular. The track infrastructure is planned for removal,” he said.

KiwiCanyons spokesperson Daniel Clearwater said responsible canyoners used their experience and judgement to assess hazards and manage risks.

“A smart canyoner would make sure they understood the reasons behind any DOC closure. This would allow them to better assess the risks before making their decision on how to manage that risk, or whether to turn back and choose another site,” Clearwater said.

Watercolours brought to life

Watercolour is not an insipid medium, rather it has power and authority.

So says New Zealand watercolourist Jacky Pearson, who has been teaching two three-day workshops in the art form for the Ashburton Society of Arts at its Short Street Studio.

The Carterton-based artist held one workshop which quickly booked out to its limit of 10 people, so she had to hold another.

She is imparting her love of watercolour both in the studio and out on location, at venues such as fields and a historic homestead.

Pearson said some art galleries avoided exhibiting watercolours, seeming to believe they did not have the same longevity as oil paintings, which was false.

Additionally many associated watercolours with a wishy-washy style.

“But actually they can have a lot of power and authority as a medium,” Pearson said.

While they were accessible due to being water based, they were hard to master.

“It takes many more years to master, but when you do they are much more exciting as a medium,” Pearson said.

“To paint in watercolour is much more exciting because while they are wet they are alive.”

Painting in watercolour was currently enjoying a phase of increasing popularity.

“People are understanding that watercolours can be bold and beautiful.”

Ashburton to light up for Christmas

When Ashburton’s abysmal collection of Christmas lights and decorations were hoisted above East Street last year there was a collective gasp of horror; this year that might turn to admiration.

In its budget for the next financial year, the Ashburton District Council has built in an extra $150,000 to cover a range of new, inner town decorations.

Councillors signed off the spending at last week’s budget workshops on the back of a raft of complaints from the community about last year’s shoddy display.

The expenditure wasn’t in the budget, but last year’s festive display was nothing short of an embarrassment, said councillor Russell Ellis. “We either do it properly or we don’t do it at all.”

Council community relations manager Vincie Billante said an approach had been made last year to council by Ashburton retailers for festive lighting and decorations to be in place before the annual Santa parade. This hadn’t happened.

“When they finally went up, the sentiment was that it was a bit of an embarrassment rather than something that created a sense of ‘place’,” she said.

While the initial proposal was to improve the town’s festive lighting, there was an opportunity to extend the lights and banners into a more universal, year-round display that could change with the seasons. In many towns and cities this kind of material was used to create a sense of place and an identity in a town and retailers often attributed this ‘feeling’ to helping create greater foot traffic and vibrancy, Billante said.

Boosting the money put into festive lighting did not need to impact on ratepayers, rather it could come from reserve contributions, she said.

“Looking at this we have money sitting in ‘grandma’s jars’ to get some quick wins that will have sustainability, but we either need to do it well or don’t do it at all.”

If the council stumped up the cast it could then possibly approach other businesses in the district who might also want to be part of the project, Billante said.

“I’d be looking at this to be done all year round; in winter it could be quite stunning if we had lights and banners.

“It’s a matter of getting everyone together and coming up with a plan. We’ve been doing it ad hoc, without a plan. $150,000 is a good

starter from council and I’d hope to also get money from the community.”

Over the past two years the council has spent $30,000 on lights and this was used for the clock tower and Ashburton Domain.

The impact of not proceeding with this, she said, was that Ashburton retained its reputation of being a “miserable and unwelcoming place to visit in the CBD, especially at Christmas time”.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel gave the spending her support.

“We need to look at how we want this town to look for the next 20 years,” she said.

Art inspired by Alzheimer’s struggle The winner of the inaugural Zonta Ashburton Female Art Award, drew on her mother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease for inspiration.

Presented by the Zonta Club of Ashburton, in partnership with the Ashburton Art Gallery, Otago Polytechnic Master of Fine Arts student Fiona van Oyen beat 42 other finalists.

Her entry was a largescale lino print titled, I Think This is Part of Our Garden.

The work is one from a series of prints that will make up Fiona’s Masters exhibition/examination in the Dunedin School of Art Gallery from April 3-6.

Van Oyen said the work was inspired by her mother Ngaire, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

“Winning this award means so much to me as practically, it will help to fund the making of new works,” she said.

“But also, it’s particularly poignant to me that Zonta has made this gift, as mine is a woman’s story.”

The award seeks to raise the status of female visual artists working in the wider Canterbury area and acknowledges excellence in emerging and midcareer female artists.

A panel of three selected Fiona’s work, with judge, Felicity Milburn commenting; “the work impressed us with its ambition, its sense of discovery and its strong visual push and pull”.

“Starting with something familiar and domestic, the artist thoroughly disestablished the original imagery, leaving us with something much less certain and much more powerful,” she said.

Fiona won a cash prize of $3500 and a special opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery in March 2018.

Family with disabled NZ-born daughter denied residency A Filipino family who have lived in New Zealand for nine years have been rejected for residency partly due to their daughter’s Down Syndrome, despite her being born here.

Dennis Mana-ay and his wife have called Tauranga home since November 2007.

They have two daughters, Denise, 12, and Danielle, 6, who was born in New Zealand and has Down Syndrome.

Mana-ay, 43, is a community support worker at LINC Support Services, an organisation aiding those with mental illness and addictions.

The family has been living in New Zealand on work visas.

“In 2013 we applied [for residency], but it was declined because Danielle, who was born here, has Down Syndrome,” said Mana-ay.

“We then went to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal, but we were declined. We also went to the Associate Minister at the time, Craig Foss, but were declined again.”

Mana-ay said the family believed Danielle was making improvements and doing well, so at the end of 2016, the family applied again for residency.

But he says they were declined again, this time because his job as a community worker did not meet the requirements in the skilled migrant category.

“According to them, my work as a community worker is not a skill,” he said.

“It’s upsetting because we’ve been here more than nine years now, paying taxes.”

His eldest daughter, who had “always seen New Zealand as her home”, had been crying due to the stress, Mana-ay said.

Their visas expired in June, he said, but it was “very difficult” as they were in limbo, unsure whether they could afford flights back to the Philippines.

Immigration New Zealand area manager Darren Calder confirmed both applications had been rejected in October 2013 and again in February.

“The first application was declined because Danielle Mana-ay did not meet the health requirements to be granted residence.

“The second application was declined because INZ was not satisfied that Mr Mana-ay’s job is a substantial match to the occupations listed under Welfare Support Worker as set out in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations.

Mana-ay was assessed as having a total of 60 points under the Skilled Migrant Category, Calder said, which was “well below” the required 100 points migrants must gain to be considered.

“The family has a right of appeal against the residence decision to the independent Immigration and Protection Tribunal.”

New preschool playground open for business Phoenix Preschool has officially opened its new playground.

The event, held last week, celebrated the completion of stage one of the centre’s redevelopment.

Parents, students and guests who helped to make the project possible were present.

The honour of cutting the ribbon fell to Penny and Margo Green. Penny was once a student of the preschool and her children are now students.

Bestowed with the cutting of the cake was Kurt Green from Green Landscaping, who laid out the plan for the project and saw it through to the finish.

Still in the pipeline is the moving of swings and the sandpit, and the construction of a more suitable office area for staff.

Budget for repairs When it sets its budget for maintenance work on the district’s public conveniences, experience has forced the Ashburton District Council to build an amount to cover property damage at the hands of vandals. For the coming year it anticipates it will spend about $20,000 replacing broken items and repairing toilet blocks because of vandalism. Rakaia’s toilet block and Ashburton’s urban toilets have $5000 each set aside for cleaning up after vandals, while the East Street inner town block is anticipated to require $3000 worth of repair work. All up, it will cost the council $583,824 to keep the district’s public toilets in business next year.

Weather causes evacuations Children leaving the Hunua Falls Camp due to heavy rain and flooding yesterday were helped by police, the army, civil defence – even a Cabinet Minister.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman has a 9-year-old daughter at Northcote Primary and arrived at the camp yesterday morning for his scheduled parent-helper duty, as it was being evacuated following heavy rain the area.

“I got there and everything was in order and they were getting ready to move people out.

The army turned up with some trucks, and they had police and Civil Defence on the ground,” Coleman said.

About 150 children and 25 adults were removed from the camp. The students were in good spirits, Coleman said.

“The teachers and the adults there were excellent. Although they were never in danger there was a river right beside the camp which was rapidly rising.

“So it was important to get the road unblocked and people out.

Because I think the forecast is for the weather to actually get worse over the next 24 hours.

“Although there was always higher ground there for them to move to they would be out in the open and completely drenched.

You know, you don’t want to take any risks around that.”

Coleman’s National colleague and MP for Hunua, Andrew Bayly, said he was in regular contact with emergency services in the area.

In the Hunua area there were 180 people, including parents, at the YMCA Camp Adair who were safely moved out of the area.

In Clevedon, the fire brigade had had 12 callouts since midnight Tuesday.

“They have removed the police car that was submerged, but there is another car that is apparently submerged. Wairoa River is the real issue because it is so swollen. The rain tonight

makes that a real issue, there is extensive flooding down that Wairoa River area.”

In Maraetai/Beachlands, Bayly said the fire brigade had received 30 calls since midnight Tuesday. The Maraetai Coast Road was closed because of landslips.

Kawakawa Bay was landlocked, with the road to Clevedon and to Orere Point closed.

The only access was by helicopter or boat.

Orere Point was also landlocked, because of road closures. Bayly said he had spoken to Auckland Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore, who is currently landlocked in his Orere Point home.

“Overall, the police and fire brigades have all indicated no one has been hurt or any substantial damage, but there are extensive landslips. The thing about it is what will happen tonight (Wednesday night).”

A woman was seriously injured after her car collided with a bus at Kingseat, south of Auckland yesterday morning. The Ritchies bus was carrying passengers to Papakura at the time. There were nine passengers on board. An Auckland Transport spokesman said no passengers on the bus were seriously hurt. The driver was also unscathed and had been sent home. The police Serious Crash Unit is investigating. St John Ambulance said the driver of the car was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition. She said 12 other people were checked out by paramedics. None were transported or had serious injuries.

Blackmail case in court A Christchurch man has been accused of blackmailing another man to pay him $40,000 or else he would post allegations of historic sexual crimes on social media. The 37-year-old from New Brighton, has been charged with blackmailing the man last September 29. He faces a second charge alleging that he went ahead with a Facebook post last week “with intent to cause harm” and caused “serious emotional distress”. The blackmail charge has been laid under the Crimes Act 1961 and carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail. The second charge relating to the Facebook post was laid under the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015.

Fake doctor may have fled It took a private medical company to out a fake doctor accused of evading NSW Health for more than a decade while treating patients at four Sydney and Central Coast hospitals.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has called for a jail term for those like Shyam Acharya, who allegedly stole the name and medical qualifications of “Sarang Chitale” to work at Manly, Hornsby, Wyong and Gosford hospitals between 2003 and 2014.

Acharya, who is believed to have left the country, worked as a junior doctor and in the emergency department consults.

After leaving hospitals, Acharya worked for private medical research company Novotech between June 2015 and September 2016 using the same fake identity.

AAP understands it was Novotech that raised the alarm before investigations began.

Management at the firm discovered in September that he may have misrepresented his identity and qualifications.

“Novotech immediately took steps to investigate and contacted the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the NSW police (among others),” a spokeswoman told AAP yesterday.

“Those organisations conducted their own investigations into this issue with which Novotech fully co-operated.

Authorities are now trying to track down Acharya, who is accused of stealing the documents while living in India and using them to register with the Medical Council of NSW.

Acharya has been charged by the AHPRA and faces being fined up to $30,000.

However, it’s not clear if he will face court if he has fled the country.

Hazzard called the fine “crackers” and said more needs to be done.

He will raise the issue at this month’s COAG health ministers’ meeting to ensure checks and balances are in place at a national level.

“I will be pushing for a jail term for anybody who thinks this is acceptable,” he told AAP yesterday.

NSW Health would not reveal whether Acharya had any medical experience before working in Australia, but said he was subject to supervision given his status as a junior doctor with limited registration.

MH370 search must continue - families As families prepare to mark the third anniversary of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, the final resting place of the aircraft’s main body remains a mystery.

So far, only minor wreckage has been found, meaning relatives of the victims are still uncertain of where their loved ones died.

“We do not want it to be the case that MH370 vanishes without a trace,” said Grace Subathirai Nathan, a Malaysian lawyer whose mother was aboard the Boeing-777.

“Planes can be replaced, but 239 lives can’t,” she said.

The plane, which went missing on March 8, 2014 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, including six Australians, is believed to have crashed into the Indian Ocean.

“As the days roll into weeks and weeks into months, it becomes less about finding closure and more about being something to learn from. We should not let something like this happen again,” Nathan said.

The search was halted in January after an underwater sweep of some 120,000 square kilometres turned up no signs of the plane’s main body. Malaysia, Australia and China were jointly involved in carrying out the underwater search efforts.

Families say they are not ready to concede that the missing plane is hopelessly lost, even as they insist that governments should continue to finance search operations.

Until now, 27 pieces of debris – including two pieces found in South Africa two weeks ago – have been found with links to MH370.

Kylie’s heartbreak album Kylie Minogue is working on a new album, inspired by her recent heartbreak.

The singer is back in Australia on a promotional tour, and revealed she was working on her 14th studio album. “I’m busy in the studio working on a new album. I’m so excited,” Minogue said.

The singer split from her fiance, British actor Joshua Sasse, at the start of the year, after a year’s engagement. Minogue confirmed the split on her Instagram account but hasn’t revealed any further details, while rumours of infidelity swirl around Sasse. The singer will let the music do the talking, admitting the album will be inspired by the last few months.

Four dead as train hits bus in US A freight train has smashed into a charter bus carrying people on a trip organised by a senior centre, pushing the bus almost 100 metres down the tracks and leaving at least four people dead.

The bus was carrying 50 people from Aus-

tin, Texas, Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said. He said authorities believe the bus was stopped on the tracks at the time of the crash, but they don’t yet know why.

At least four people were killed, according to Biloxi city spokesman Vincent Creel.

Charter buses often carry patrons to one of Biloxi’s eight casinos, but Creel said he wasn’t sure where the bus was headed.

A British coroner has ruled George Michael died from natural causes. Darren Salter, senior coroner for Oxfordshire said yesterday the singer died from dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver. Michael suffered health scares and fought drug addiction for years.

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle. It becomes stretched and thin, which affects how blood is able to pump around the body. In some cases, it is an inherited condition.

Otherwise, it is caused by things such as viral infections, uncontrolled high blood pressure, problems with the heart valves or excessive drinking.

Trump dossier author speaks out The former British intelligence officer behind a dossier of allegations about Donald Trump has broken his silence.

Christopher Steele, who runs Londonbased Orbis Business Intelligence, said yesterday he was returning to work and thanked people for their support.

Speaking outside his firm’s offices in Belgravia, he said: “I’m really pleased to be back here working again at the Orbis’ offices in London. I’m now going to be focusing my efforts on supporting the broader interests of our company here.”

A former MI6 agent, Steele was forced into hiding in January when he was named in

connection with the report. The dossier contained politically explosive claims that Russia was in possession of compromising information – known in Moscow as “Kompromat” – on Trump, which could be used to blackmail or exert pressure on the new president.

It detailed allegations that the Trump team had multiple contacts with Russian officials during the election campaign, and that the billionaire tycoon had been cultivated by Moscow over a number of years as a possible presidential candidate, with the aim of encouraging splits within the West.

Trump denounced the document as “fake news”.

s the world celebrated International Women’s Day yesterday, one topic was on everybody’s lips: the gender pay gap.

We’ve made great strides in other areas, but are seriously lagging behind in some equality stakes.

This year’s theme is #BeBoldForChange and working towards creating a more gender-inclusive world.

With the World Economic Forum shockingly predicting the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186, it seems an impossible situation to turn around.

But, it’s time to start moving mountains and at least we’re having serious conversations around the issue.

A Human Rights Commission project, published yesterday, found women earn $600,000 less on average than their male counterparts in their lifetimes.

Equal Opportunities Commissioner Dr Jackie Blue said these problems stemmed from society valuing women less than men.

And, only this week, Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett challenged private businesses to conduct and publish gender audits of what they pay their staff, and has described closing the gender pay gap as one of her top priorities as Minister for Women.

In a speech, she said: “It is simply unacceptable that women, who are as productive and contribute so significantly to business and the economy, are paid less than men.”

Women have earned 12 per cent less than men for the past decade and 84 per cent of the reasons for the pay gap were attributed to “unexplained factors”.

Also joining the crusade, was a group of organisations – including The New Zealand College of Midwives, the National Council of Women, Maori Women’s Welfare League and the New Zealand Nurses Organisation – which jointly signed a statement warning that the welfare of women is at risk because of gender discrimination.

Aside from that, International Women’s Day is about celebration and recognising the great leaps and bounds that have been achieved.

We must also acknowledge the inspirational women fighting the good fight, determined to see action in their lifetimes, but more importantly, for future generations.

Armed with education and information, hopefully opportunities and change will follow suit.

Forecast milk payout pared back Economists have pared back their forecasts for Fonterra Cooperative Group’s milk payout to its farmer shareholders for the current season after dairy prices tumbled in the GlobalDairyTrade auction.

Last month, Fonterra kept its forecast farmgate payout at $6 per kilogram of milk solids, citing the rebalancing of demand and supply.

The GDT price index – which covers a variety of products and contract periods – yesterday slid 6.3 per cent from the previous auction two weeks ago to $US3512, its lowest level since early November last year. Whole milk powder, which makes up the bulk of the auction, sank 12.4 per cent to $US2782 a tonne.

Global dairy prices have become increasingly volatile over recent years as government subsidies and schemes propping up prices have reduced, allowing prices for more products to be set by the market.

For farmers, that’s meant huge swings in prices, with Fonterra

paying a record $8.40 per kilogram of milksolids in the 2013/14 season but just $3.90/kgMS for the 2015/16 season, below the level required by most dairy farm-

ers to break even. Economists had been more optimistic about the payout for the current season after milk prices recovered from their latest slump but have

since lowered their expectations.

Westpac Banking Corp economist Sarah Drought said the overnight decline and a weaker near-term outlook for prices led Westpac to lower its forecast to $5.90/kgMS versus a prior forecast of $6.20/ kgMS. “A few months back buyers were looking ahead to the New Zealand autumn, expecting a much tighter backdrop for supply and had been willing to pay a premium to secure product. But now, this has well and truly faded, with prices now firmly moving in the other direction,” said Drought.

ASB Bank rural economist Nathan Penny said ASB revised down its forecast to $6/kgMS from $6.50/kgMS on the back of sliding dairy prices at the auction.

He noted the slide follows a partial turnaround in this season’s production and “this season’s weather risks have receded.”

Recent rain in most parts of the country means the improvements in production are likely to be maintained over the remainder of the season.

Few NZ women in top jobs highest recorded, but is only “a marginal improvement” of 1 per cent on last year.

The report, released on International Women’s Day yesterday, says the proportion of businesses worldwide with no women in senior management has also increased over the past year, from 33 per cent to 34 per cent.

In New Zealand, that figure fell from 42 per cent to 37 per cent, “one of the first positive changes since 2012”.

But Grant Thornton NZ partner Stacey Davies says the country is still lagging well behind.

“Despite evidence linking di-

versity and improved business performance, the dial is shifting at a painfully slow rate,” she said.

“This is a real concern for business growth as it suggests we aren’t maximising the potential out there.”

She said the reasons for the lack of progress were varied.

“However, this year we encountered a concerning sense that the issue has plateaued, as companies perhaps assume the diversity challenge has been dealt with,” she said.

“The evidence tells us this is not the case.”

New Zealand sits near the bottom of the pack for the ratio of women in senior business roles, according to an international survey.

Just 20 per cent of senior management positions in New Zealand are held by women in 2017, a report based on the Grant Thornton annual survey of 5500 companies says.

This was up 1 per cent from the past two years, but down 11 per cent on 2004, and left New Zealand 28th of the 36 countries in the study.

Trade deal with EU moves forward New Zealand has moved a step closer towards a freetrade agreement with the European Union, Trade Minister Todd McClay says.

Mr McClay has met with the EU’s Trade Commissioner, Cecilia Malmstrom in Brussels this week and said, after more than two years of talks, they’ve completed joint discussions about the scope of a possible deal.

That means both parties will now seek mandates to start negotiations proper.

McClay said he had invited Commissioner Malmstrom to visit New Zealand later in the year and she had accepted.

“As a result, we expect the price softness may remain over the coming auctions,” said Penny.

Bank of New Zealand economist Doug Steel said milk powder prices have fallen as the supply outlook has improved.

He said production declines in the European Union and New Zealand are showing signs of abating, while rain in New Zealand has improved the late season outlook.

Those factors “diminishes previous upside risk to Fonterra’s $6 milk price view”.

Steel said BNZ lowered its milk price forecast to $6.10/kgMS from $6.40/kgMS earlier in the week.

AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said farmers will be disappointed with yesterday’s result.

“To see prices falling again before the market has fully recovered will be a disappointment to farmers. While one poor result doesn’t have a huge impact on the milk price it will be difficult for prices to recover quickly while there is surplus product available,” she said.

Aiming for farming excellence After some 30 years of recognising the highest achievers in the South Island’s farming community, the Lincoln University Foundation has decided to call time on the South Island Farmer of the Year competition.

Instead, it will shift its resources to increasing scholarship opportunities for young farmers and other agriculturalists to study at Lincoln University.

Chairman Ben Todhunter said the foundation was moving from “identifying farming excellence to creating farming excellence”.

“The Lincoln University Foundation’s primary goal is to advance agriculture and related interests in New Zealand’s primary industries,” Todhunter said.

“For the past 30 years we’ve been doing that with a combination of scholarships and study grants, and through the annual South Island Farmer of the Year competition, which has had focus on recognising and rewarding existing excellence and sharing that with others to inspire improved performance across the sector.

“The competition has been a wonderful medium to promote farming excellence and we are very proud of what it has achieved. But the foundation now wants to focus more on the scholarship side of our programme to achieve our purpose of growing excellence in New Zealand’s primary industries.

“We believe the most gain will be through increasing the number of young people who can enter university to study agriculture and bring that knowledge into New Zealand’s primary industries.”

The final South Island Farmer of the Year event will be the

Ben Todhunter 2016 winner’s field day at Fairlie on April 3 and Todhunter said the foundation intends to make sure it is a celebration of all that has been achieved in the past 30 years.

All former winners and foundation trustees will be invited to participate in what he predicts will be a very special field day.

“It is very fitting that 2016 competition winners Neil and Lyn Campbell will be hosting the final winner’s field day,” Todhunter said. “They are the very essence of what the South Island Farmer of the Year competition has been about since its inception.

“The Campbells are extremely efficient, incredibly flexible and adaptive farmers. Throughout their career they have been quick to adapt the most modern tools to create the systems that allow them to generate the most profit at the most effective point of time.”

The Foundation for Arable Research is looking for women to join its dedicated Women in Arable group.

The group is for women living or working on an arable farm, involved in the industry or simply someone wanting to understand more about how arable farming works.

Women in Arable (WIA) is a collaboration between FAR staff and arable women and holds regular meetings that provide a mixture of hands-on learning opportunities, research, regulation and compliance updates, as well as farm visits, and time to meet and talk to other women in arable.

WIA co-ordinator Anna Heslop from FAR says the group was set up with support from the Sustainable Farming Fund in 2001 to meet the needs of women living on arable farms, who had little, if any, rural or cropping knowledge, but wanted to learn.

“Many of these women found it difficult to get involved in the farm business as they were not originally from farms, or they worked off-farm, or they had their hands full with young families.

“WIA provided an opportunity to meet

others in the same boat, consider the many options for women in the arable sector and learn practical and business management skills to benefit their farm business.

“Fast forward to 2017 and not much has changed.

“WIA still meets nine times a year, generally in or around Ashburton and the programme is set up to ensure that there is something for everyone no matter what their level of knowledge or involvement.

“Members include hands-on farm partners and industry reps, those who focus more on business administration and compliance and others who are busy with jobs or families but want to stay in the loop.

“We also have a few who come along because they are completely new to the area or the industry and want to learn in an independent supportive environment.”

The first Women in Arable meeting for 2017 will be held on March 14 at the Hotel Ashburton.

Woohoo the girls did it.

Allenton Ladies Sandra Keith, Serina Mathews, Noeline Woods, Rosemary Bennett, Wendy Watson, Sandra Holdem and Shirley Doig took out the NZ 2nd Division Title in Auckland over the weekend.

Fabulous effort and not to forget that Rachel Davies and Anne Reid also were part of the team having filled in when required. Well done to you all.

A great weekend all round for Allenton with the Men winning the Gala Cup and Challenge Cups and Ladies winning the Premiers at Methven over the weekend.

Wonderful wonderful efforts by you all and the club is very proud of you.

Ashburton U3A welcomed the first of a very diverse list of speakers for 2017 with a presentation from Professor Steven Ratuva on The Origins of the Pacific Peoples.

Members were welcomed by President Linda Baker and the speaker introduced by Jill Ross.

Professor Ratuva, a political sociologist, published author, Director of the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies and Professor in Anthropology at Canterbury University, enthralled a large gathering of members and guests with his vast knowledge.

It was a pity that time constraints did not allow him to expand further on his subject as it was of great interest and for many, an eye-opener on the settlement of our near neighbours with a mere fifty minutes to cover 150,000 years of discovery and settlement.

When Captain Cook sailed down to the Pacific, he found many of the islands were already populated.

Global migration of the last 100,000 years emanated from Africa, ie West to East.

Farming in the Highlands of New Guinea goes back 14,000 years. Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia share many similarities in language.

Cultural links became very complex as people adapted to the physical and social environment over time.

Anthropologists digging in Vanuatu and Tonga discovered similarities in both countries. Pole housing in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and the Solomon Islands also show strong similarities in style. Large canoes of Bali, Fiji, New Guinea and the Philippines were able to carry up to 300 people and travel long distances in quick time whilst the Fijian canoes were more like ships with a house atop and very large sail which gave Fiji great power.

There is also archaeological evidence through Lapita pottery, similar in design to Greek potteries, and found throughout the Pacific.

Following a question and answer session, Professor Ratuva was thanked by Edith Smith.

The next meeting will be held March 28 at St. Davids Allenton when the speaker will be Juzah Zammit-Ross on the Hakatere Conservation Park.

This will be the first in a mini-series of three meetings covering Hakatere, Glaciation of Mid

Ashburton Bowling Club Men’s Championship singles are completed and after a very close game of good draw bowls Colin Dennis defeated Murray Anderson 21-20. For a while it looked like Murray had the situation covered at 18 -11 but Colin crept back to come out the Champion.

Liquorland Triples held on Saturday March 4 saw Ashburton teams come 2nd and 4th.

Sunday March 5 saw Ashburton Ladies Prestige win overall with Margaret Eder, Heather Goodall, Leonie Spargo and Laraine Mills. Good to see one of our newest bowlers in the winners’ circle again.

Ashburton Premier team of Diane Gutberlet, Diana King, Judie Ryk and Ollie Collins were runners-up in that section. Men’s team of Gavin Eder, Jo Ryk Murray Anderson and Mike Quinn were runners-up in the Gala event.

Challenge team of Colin Dennis, Alastair MacKenzie, Gordon Sparks and Colin Arnst won the 1st game but lost the 2nd one. Well done to all the players. You have made the club very proud.

We have lost another of our members and a fitting guard of honour was present at Barry O’Sullivan’s funeral to farewell him.

Our thoughts and sympathies go to Rosemarie and her family. To all those sick we wish you all well again soon.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Joy Jaine welcomed Mayor Donna Favel, Councillor Thelma Bell, visitors and members to the February meeting when awards were presented for the recent Annual Garden Competition.

Speaker for the evening was Ron Andrew from Christchurch Beautifying Society, who described gardens and streets recently judged in Christchurch.

Shona and Joy were invited to assist with the judging in Christchurch.

Ron also judged at the Ashburton competition and spoke highly of the standard of entries. A very pleasant evening concluded with supper.

Ashburton Wahine Club Members of the Wahine Club have started this year’s activities with social get-togethers. A well-attended evening at Chief Phyllis’s home to watch a CD of last season’s Tane Night.

A lovely reminder of how much fun we had preparing and presenting the programme to entertain fellow members and friends.

Next outing for members was the Annual Dinner held at Robbies restaurant.

This was very well attended and if the chatter is any indication it has made a good start for the forthcoming season.

Practices for the first Hui start this week for the presentation on May 4.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORTS Mid Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes Activities Report Greetings to all, It is AGM time again in the Women’s Institutes Calendar so it will be a good start to wish all those taking office this year, all the best for a productive and enjoyable tenure and for all members to have quality time with each other.

The Mid Canterbury Federation’s AGM will take place on Friday 31st March 2017 at the Seniors Centre, Ashburton; the meeting commences at 10.30 after morning tea and promises to be a most interesting one.

A presentation is going to be made for Ashburton Hospital during the morning’s activities.

We will also be looking for some extra hands being raised to serve on Executive Committee.

Many thanks to all those who helped with hospital posy bowls, and also to all those who delivered Meals on Wheels recently.

Yvonne, our hard-working WI convenor for this service, advised that 327 meals were delivered during WI’s duty week.

Founders Day held on Sunday 19th February at St. Luke’s Co-operating Parish Church was a wonderful occasion and thanks to all those who took part, during the service, and afterwards when a colourful and interesting array of aprons was displayed and their stories shared.

Also shared, was a sumptuous lunch and an enjoyable social time.

There are not a great number of people attending the 96th National AGM at the Addington Events Centre, Christchurch (29-31 May) for the whole duration but it seems that there will be many who desire to go up by carloads for the day.

A hard-working organising committee Canterbury Belles have spent many hours working together to plan celebrations of Christchurch and the district.

The monthly raffle was won by Judith Nichols, and The Marion McArthur Floral Award was won

The Guest Speaker was Knox Hampton on Malawi in Africa. Knox visited the country in 2013 where her daughter Diane is a doctor and son-in-law Jim is a minister.

One-third of Malawi is a lake, Lake Malawi. Malawi, although half the size of New Zealand, contains four times the population.

Education is free until 10 years of age when attendance drops off.

Life expectancy for women is 35 years.

Diane sees 40 to 50 people per day and is assisted by an interpreter.

A friendly, informal gathering, most of the business was dispensed with except a report on the previous Sunday’s Founders Day Service at Hinds which went well and will also prove to provide some benefit to the ladies of Tonga who are being assisted by Associated Country Women of the World – ACWW, with a water tank.

A lovely afternoon was served to conclude a friendly and relaxed gathering.

Netherby February’s meeting was preceded by a garden walk. Hostess Barbara Danielson had arranged for us to go to several of the prize-winning gardens which were really enjoyed by the twentythree attending.

Back at Barbara’s own lovely garden we had a short meeting at which member Ivy McCormick was presented with her Fifty Year badge by President Pauline Palmer.

Pauline also thanked those who delivered Meals on Wheels at the beginning of the month.

The afternoon was completed with a scrumptious afternoon tea put on by Barbara.

Tinwald For their February meeting, Tinwald members met at the Ashburton Domain with their packed lunch and chairs.

The weather was kind that day.

President Joy accepted several apologies and extended good health wishes.

Meals on Wheels were recently delivered by three cars and runners on an extremely hot day.

Parker to face Fury in NZ Hughie Fury and his supporters, including his father, Peter, and cousin, the former world heavyweight champion Tyson, aim to spend up to a month in Auckland before the mandatory challenge against Joseph Parker at Vector Arena on May 6.

Should all get here ahead of Hughie’s shot at Kiwi Parker’s WBO world title, then the New Zealand public and media could be in for an interesting time.

Tyson, who famously beat Wladimir Klitschko in Germany in late 2015, an upset which echoed around the sporting world, is occasionally an outrageous character in person and on social media. There is unlikely to be a dull moment.

He has also had mental health issues and a self-confessed cocaine habit, both of which forced him to give up his four world titles, including the WBO belt now owned by 25-year-old Parker.

He has also announced that he wants to return to the ring, and would likely spar against his cousin as part of both boxers’ preparations should he come to New Zealand, but he’s also in the habit of changing his mind.

It all adds to the intrigue of what will be a highly-anticipated clash between two unbeaten professionals.

Also up in the air is the immigration status of Peter, Hughie’s father and trainer and a key part of Hughie’s support crew.

A serious conviction for drugs many years ago, for which Peter went to jail, could yet prevent him from getting immigration clearance, and in finally announcing the fight details yesterday after winning the purse bid early last

Now that the details have been confirmed, Duco Events can go about promoting an event which will cost far more – by seven fig-

ures – than Parker’s world title challenge against Andy Ruiz Jr at the same event late last year.

Several hurdles have been scaled, but more remain. A major one is that the negotiations with Fury’s promoter Frank Warren, have finally been concluded, and Parker’s trainer Kevin Barry yesterday made a note of the Englishman’s “stalling”.

And a potential hearing into performance-enhancing drugs use by both Hughie and Tyson – the pair maintain their innocence – will not be held before the fight.

Higgins also confirmed Hughie and Parker had agreed to abide

by Wada’s drug testing regulations for the fight.

Funding remains an issue, however. Higgins said Auckland’s funding arm Ateed was not approached because he was told it would be pointless, but he was hopeful central government could come to the party for a fight which will make a big noise in the United Kingdom where the heavyweight scene is enjoying a huge upsurge in popularity.

Should the New Zealand government not commit, then Samoa, who supported Parker’s win against Ruiz, will again be approached.

Parker’s trainer Barry said his man returned to Las Vegas five weeks ago fit and refreshed and would next week begin sparring for the remaining eight weeks of the camp.

Barry added: “The most exciting thing for us is that after this long, stalling, drawn-out process

by Fury’s promoter, finally we can announce a date and start focusing on having Joe and Fury in the ring on May 6.”

■ ARCTIC RACE

Extreme runner’s life-sustaining sled finally turns up Greg Roadley’s nervous wait for his sled is over.

The extreme runner is taking part in a 560km race across the Arctic Circle in Canada but his survival sled was lost in transit until yesterday.

This severely limited on-the-ice practice.

Roadley and 19 other extreme athletes have gathered in Whitehorse, Yukon, and leave today for the start line 500km away at Eagle Plains.

The brutal eight-day race will take them across the Arctic Circle to the finish at Tuktoyaktuk, on the edge of the Beaufort Sea. Roadley’s wife Rachel said it was a bit of a nervous wait for the sled.

Air Canada failed to load it in Vancouver and they had wait for it to arrive on one of just two flights before the competitors moved north to the start line.

“Big relief last night when it arrived! He was out early practising

with it in the snow.”

The sled will contain life-sustaining food and sleeping gear for the adventure, with temperatures expected to dip to minus 50 degrees.

The race starts on Friday.

Increased stakes raise hopes

By GreG Jones The Ashburton Racing Club will hold its first meeting for 2017 today. While it is an Industry Day it marks the first of the minimum $10k stakes levels funded by NZ Thoroughbred Racing, providing some relief and more incentives for owners and trainers to be and remain in the racing industry.

Long overdue, pressure from high profile trainers and the departure of other significant participants and horses for Australia precipitated an earlier than proposed funding model change.

The first race begins at 12.32pm and action will be wrapped up soon after the last at 4.42pm for those wishing to enjoy the entertainment during the afternoon.

Fairlight looks a horse with plenty of ability and a bright future and has strong claims to winning the first on the card.

Pat In Brackets will enjoy both the weight relief and the easier track conditions, so expect a strong performance.

Sir Singo has a good record here and is always a chance in this grade while Bridget Town, Tantella and Flying Sardine all have the ability to also dispute the finish.

Hoofbeat should go very close to winning the second event given the exposed form. Smoke ’Em Wilson has been solid lately and should receive an economical run from the handy draw.

Three locals should also be thereabouts: Vicar’s Daughter has placed form recently to recommend it, Hand of Aces had inspired support on debut and will be better for the experience while Loopy has sound trial form to prepare for this and also has a top rider and the ace draw to add to the positives.

Elusive Boxers looks capable of taking out the third event with the easy track expected to be of significant benefit. Hot Tempo is honest and performs well on the track. A number of speedsters are engaged and the fast pace will suit a strong finisher like Mulberry.

Flytime and Mare Mia are also capable on their day and bold

runs wouldn’t surprise.

Race 4 is for the higher rated stayers and most interest will centre on Zigwig, a 3yo filly using this as a trial for a possible NZ Oaks tilt. Connections have a history of high performers and they have long espoused her qualities and while the field is small, Zigwig will need to do everything right to take it out against some useful and more experienced rivals.

Zhanim is a classy type which will be hard to beat and McMay has outstanding track and distance stats.

Opihi Jade is poised for another win in the staying R65 event after some useful recent efforts in

stronger fields. Miss Mia returns to a more favourable distance and will be at good odds while Precious Percy is a dour sort that runs handy and sticks on well enough to consider. Pentire Babe is perhaps the ‘value roughie of the day’ as this represents a massive drop in class from racing in the North Island over the distance with some credit.

The fillies and mares maiden looks an ideal opportunity for Per Form to open its winning account. Very unlucky last start – an opposing rider was suspended for causing interference to it – this filly should appreciate the step up to 1400m.

Red River Rock, bred and craced by long serving committeeman Tony Cook, impressed in running third on debut and will competitive here, while the Champion/Murphy stable have a likely sort in Bound To Keep Her which has looked above average at the trials. Nakyama appears best of the rest.

The RD Petrolem Open caters for open class gallopers and Jan Hay has two strong chances in Pepper Mill (not so well weighted) and Laaffaire who between them have had eight starts on the home track for four wins and three placings. Furthermore they are both accomplished at the 1400m trip.

Volcano is another with stats on his side and is ready to use his explosive finish, while old timer El Chico and up-and-comer Boots N All add to an intriguing contest.

The last of the day contains an even lineup. Royal Road looked all class winning on debut here but the two runs since have been less convincing although expect better today.

Maggie’s Secret and Whacomaco have distance winning form and that augurs well for their chances as some of the others seem more like pure sprinters.

Castup, Black Estate and Still Waters all have form and will attract justifiable support.

Warm-up goes to Mid Canty

Mid Canterbury United Football Club seniors strolled to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Geraldine in the first run-out of the season on Saturday.

With a pushed back kick-off to try and combat the afternoon heat, the sides took to the rock-hard pitch for three, 30-minute periods of football.

Mid Canterbury started with

a bang, with Gligor Radu slicing open the visitors’ defence with a diagonal ball from inside his own half, which was well controlled and placed coolly in the net with a side foot finish by Gaston Alberdi.

The hosts continued to test the Geraldine side, and finally capitalised with a free kick after a cynical foul just outside of the box.

Edward Kettle lined up the

ball and deceived the wall and keeper, powering the free kick low, under the wall and past the sprawling keeper.

The second third ran with a similar script to the first, with Mid Canterbury controlling proceedings, finding the back of the net for the third and final time.

It was Kettle who found the sweet spot once again.

After the ball was rolled back

to him, the midfielder struck the ball from deep, bouncing deceptively off the hard ground and fooling the keeper, finishing up in the back of the net.

Strong one-on-one saves from Mid Canterbury goalkeeper, Cosmin Teodorescu, helped to secure the clean sheet in the final third of the game.

Geraldine will look to get one back when the two sides meet again on March 18.

Kids duathlon/ triathlon to kick off this weekend

Title rematches to kick off provincial showpiece

Ashburton District’s youngest residents will be putting their swimming, cycling and running skills to the test on Sunday when the EA Networks Centre’s Kids Duathlon and Triathlon kicks off.

Kids aged five to 13 can enter either the duathlon or triathlon, with the first race kicking off at 8am.

“Competitions like this are great fun for kids to get involved in and gives them the opportunity to improve their skills.

We’d love to see as many kids as possible getting out there and having a go,” sports facility assistant manager Richard Wood says.

Kids aged five to six will complete a 250 metre run, a one kilometre bike ride, followed by another 250 metre run. Kids aged seven and above will swim at least 25 metres, bike 2.5 kilometres and finish a one kilometre run. 11 to 13-year-olds will complete a 1.5 kilometre run.

Spot prizes will be handed out and every participant will receive a certificate to commemorate their efforts.

Entry is $25.00 per child.

The 2017 Mitre 10 Cup will kick off with rematches of last year’s premiership and championship finals - Canterbury v Tasman, North Harbour v Otago.

Harbour edged the southerners in the championship game to earn promotion into this season’s premiership, but will have to defend that result in their home opener at QBE Stadium on Thursday, August 17.

Tasman will host the premiership grudge match against the red-and-blacks the following evening.

The 2017 Mitre 10 Cup plays across nine weeks, with every team playing one Wednesday night fixture in a double-up round where they play twice that week.

The semi-finals will be played on October 20-21, with the championship final to be played on Friday, October 27, and the premiership on Saturday, October 28.

The Heartland Championship begins on August 26, with last year’s Meads Cup champions Wanganui taking on Wairarapa Bush and Lochore Cup winners North Otago up against Horowhenua Kapiti.

New Zealand Rugby provincial union rugby head Steve Lancaster said the Mitre 10 Cup and Heartland Championship are home to great provincial rivalries and rugby heritage.

“Provincial rugby games were first played in New Zealand more than 140 years ago, and those historic rivalries are very much alive today,” said Lancaster.

“Be it the old geographic rivalry of Otago and Southland or the more modern Battle of the Bridge between Auckland and North Harbour, these provincial rugby competitions have helped shaped our local identities and provide an opportunity for New Zealanders to show their parochialism, and back their local teams with pride.

Melbourne Storm enforcer Jesse Bromwich has set his sights on helping the club prepare for life after the “Big Three”. Bromwich yesterday signed a long-term deal locking him to Storm for the next three years with an option for two more. The 27-year-old New Zealand international captain said the decision to stay in Melbourne was easy because he could not see himself playing anywhere else.

Walsh enjoying golf Olympic shot put medallist Tom Walsh is living the dream this week – playing golf with some of his cricket heroes at the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in Queenstown.

The 125kg super-strong Walsh, 24, said it was “good to get away from my other job” as a cricket fan and mix with the likes of Brendon McCullum, Stephen Fleming, Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting as a celebrity player in this week’s tournament. Cane returns for The Chiefs The Chiefs have received a big boost ahead of their showdown against the Hurricanes, with Sam Cane set to make his first appearance of 2017.

Cane missed the first fortnight of their season while recovering from an ankle injury sustained on All Blacks duty during the end-ofyear tour, watching on from the sidelines as the Chiefs won both their opening games.

His return will be an invaluable addition for the encounter against the unbeaten defending champions, enhancing a physical and experienced Chiefs line-up.

In addition to Cane, there are four other changes to the starting XV that defeated the Blues last Friday night, including another adjustment in the loose forwards.

Taranaki flanker Mitchell Brown will start on the blindside, replacing Liam Messam who is being rested following two massive 80-minute performances.

The Tongan Bear is back The Tongan Bear is back for the Hurricanes and hoping to do a number on some of his provincial teammates at his Hamilton stomping ground.

Loni Uhila plays Mitre 10 Cup for Waikato, though he has played less games for the Mooloos (10) than he has for the Hurricanes (15). However, he did play a vital role starting at loosehead prop in the 2016 Super Rugby playoffs, his only three starts of the season.

Now Uhila is tasked, in place of Chris Eves, with repelling the force of All Black Nepo Laulala and a Chiefs’ tight five that is champing at the bit, having dusted up the Blues last Friday. Kane Hames targeted Sione Mafileo on the Chiefs’ loosehead side, so pressure will come there on Jeffery Toomaga-Allen.

Uhila is one of two changes for the Hurricanes, with lock Mark Abbott relacing James Blackwell.

“It’s good to be back. It’s pretty massive for me, especially playing the Chiefs having lived in Hamilton for the last few years. I love going back there.

“I’m a Waikato man,” says Uhila, who has overcome a niggly calf, which ruled him out of the opening two blowouts.

“I’m fully prepared and we’ll be ready for it. The scrum was one of their strong points last week and we’ve been working hard in that area this week and hopefully we can give them a good go.”

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd had no qualms about introducing Uhila to the starting mix.

“He’s been a slow burner for us at the start of the season, but Waikato is his home patch, so he’s looking forward to it. Scrumming underpins his game, so he was a surprise for us at the end of the season, but put his hand up and did really well for us,” he says.

“They’ve got a massive quality set-piece, when you consider that Hames, Elliot and Laulala have all been All Blacks to some degree, and Bird and Retallick. Retallick is probably the best lock in the world. Their

“We’re right through the Otago team, Southland,” he admitted. “We just brought in a young kid from Bay of Plenty, James

O’Reilly, as hooker. “We just let them come in and fit into the environment first, then slowly the players will start picking them up and helping them out with what they need to know.”

Brown is feeling the pressure, suffering two unlucky defeats to start the season and watching a stream of players limp to the side-lines in the process.

Sport Foran’s return delayed Warriors recruit Kieran Foran’s shoulder injury could jeopardise his highly anticipated NRL return against the Canterbury Bulldogs next week, but the club remain optimistic that he’ll be in action sooner rather than later. Foran underwent shoulder surgery late last year and the injury is taking longer than expected to heal, however the Warriors denied reports he could be sidelined for up to eight weeks. The 26-year-old is eligible to play his first game for the Warriors in next Friday’s clash against the Bulldogs in Dunedin, pending a further psychological assessment by the NRL.

Mid Canterbury netball will gain exposure to a wider market with the introduction this year of a new combined premier competition.

The new-look premier competition will feature teams from Christchurch, Mid Canterbury, North Canterbury and Selwyn and will provide all the early netball action when the season kicks into gear next month.

Mid Canterbury’s six premier sides will be joined by six sides from Christchurch and two each from both Selwyn and

North Canterbury.

The 16 teams will then be split into two random pools of eight for the seven-week long competition before the respective teams return to their regional competitions for the second half of the season.

Points for the new competition will be given for a win, a draw and a loss within three goals with the two top teams at the end of play squaring off in a final.

Mid Canterbury netball administrator, Aimee Rickard, said the new format was an exciting one.

“It’s a really exciting move for netball in Mid Canterbury that will hopefully strengthen the level of play in the region,” Rickard said.

“What it will provide is a bit of variety for players with the chance now to play against different teams at different venues as opposed to the same old things each week.”

Rickard said the talks about a potential change began back in December of last year with all four regions looking to move with the times and look to give their premier netball competitions a boost.

The competition will see Mid Canterbury’s side playing in what would normally be the first round of the local competition before the return to the normal routine once the new competition is completed.

“Based on the old formula of three rounds of play, the first round will be the new competition before we return back to our own competition for two rounds,” Rickard said.

Mid Canterbury will have Celtic, United, Hampstead, Southern, Ashburton College A and Methven competing in the inaugural year.

Du Plessis exited for 52, pulling Jimmy Neesham to Trent Boult at deep square leg with

less than four overs left in the session. He constructed a recovery which Bavuma built into dominance.

The most nervous man at the venue was presumably Mike Davies, a groundsman in his maiden test. His pitch struggled for bounce and carry initially – B-J Watling took a few deliveries around his boots – but the sun baked it enough to have the ball humming through the afternoon.

Paddon’s fresh start In many ways this week’s Rally Mexico marks the start of Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon’s 2017 season.

His accident on the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally’s first stage saw him take no further part in the event while he played catch-up to his rivals learning his new generation Hyundai i20 on the snow and ice of Sweden last time out. So back on his favoured gravel surface Paddon will be hoping to factor at the front of the field.

“Sweden was important to get some time in the car,” Paddon said.
