Four-lane commitment

National leader Todd Muller has sent a clear message to voters ahead of the September election; vote me into Government, and I will build you 60km of four-lane highway between Ashburton and Christchurch.

Muller announced the commitment to the project as part of

a whirlwind visit through Canterbury on Wednesday, ahead of a public meeting at the Hotel Ashburton.

The announcement was made to both local and national media, but was somewhat overshadowed by the controversy embroiling the party involving the leaking of private details of people with Covid-19 by Clu-

tha-Southland MP Hamish Walker.

After an extended period of questions about the scandal, which has resulted in Walker announcing he won’t stand in this year’s election, Muller was looking to talk more about the details of the road.

“Any questions about the road, come on, it’s $1.5 billion,

four lanes of highway, it’s fantastic,” he quipped.

Muller confirmed the road will be 60kms long, between Ashburton and Christchurch, and would cost $1.5 billion. It would also include second bridges being built on the Ashburton, Selwyn and Rakaia rivers.

“It’ll be straight into it in terms of consenting, design and en-

suring that it is all sorted so we can construct it,” he said.

“We have a fantastic track record with infrastructure projects with the roads of national significance.

Hospice MC to hold down-town pop-up shop Ashburton’s Hospice Mid Canterbury shop has a problem – it’s bulging at the seams and needs to make way for the flow of new items coming into the store.

With locals appearing to have a serious clean out of their homes during the Covid-19 lockdown, shop manager Tracey Fuller said stocks of goods are at an all-time high. And that’s prompted the decision to run a three-day popup shop next week.

It’s a first for the shop and will offer a great selection of furniture, linen, clothing and homewares, Fuller said.

The pop-up shop in the old Caroline Eve store on East Street, will be open on July 16 and 17 from 10am until 4pm and on July

18 from 10am until 1pm.

Proceeds from the shop go towards the many services that Hospice Mid Canterbury provides to support people throughout Mid Canterbury who are dealing with a life-limiting illness. All services are provided free of charge to clients and their caregivers.

While volunteers provide many of the services, specialised services and therapies are delivered by independent professionals who are contracted by Hospice Mid Canterbury. With no government funding, Hospice relies on sponsors, donations, income generated by the Hospice shop, and fundraisers, to offer these services.

“I am from an area that has 23km of straight grade, separated four-lane highway and I must say 60kms makes me jealous.”

Muller said the region would benefit not only from the ease of being able to move people and freight with the highway, but also the increased safety it would bring.

“There have been 119 serious accidents in this area, on that stretch of road, over the last few years and that impacts lives,” he said.

Muller highlighted that the road had been planned in the second tranche of roads of national significance by the last National Government, with those plans scrapped by the current Government.

“They did not progress with them and, instead, took $5 billion out of the state highway fund to re-direct to Auckland’s light rail transport project which, of course they confirmed a couple of weeks ago, was beyond them to consent to the build.”

Muller said construction would start on the highway in 2023.

Safe drinking water comes at a $761 million cost

Sweeping changes in the way drinking water supplies are administered could see the Ashburton District Council stripped of its water treatment and management role, with these handed over to a publicly-owned super regional entity.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern yesterday announced a $761 million investment into the Three Waters sector, one that is designed to introduce major changes and tighter regulations into the way water services are managed.

Currently 61 local authorities and seven regional councils own and manage most community wa-

ter supplies, but the government plans to strip them of this role. The incentive to get on board the national water scheme comes with a cash handout to help with maintenance and renewal costs but that comes with a catch – local authorities have to agree to the reform plans or they won’t get the money.

Funds will be allocated on a population and land area basis with the money split equally across urban, rural and provincial areas but local authorities will no longer have control of their own water services. Aggregated providers include by region or just five large cross-regional providers.

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said the amount of money tagged

for the upgrades was huge, but with the information still high level, council would need more detail to see how the plan would sit with the district’s water infrastructure.

His initial concern is that, in adopting a regional or cross-regional approach to water management and investment, councils such as Ashburton, that had been proactive in infrastructure upgrades, might end up subsidising those that had not. However, there could be wins for the district too with the council planning to spend $4 million on a membrane-lined supply for Methven, if this cost was shared across a much larger region, he said.

“There’s a huge cost to this, how-

ever, there’s a lot of detail still to come before we can start debating this. It’s a high level overview and my initial feeling is one of caution and you do have to ask, ‘where is all this money coming from’?”

What wasn’t in question was the need to ensure every community had safe drinking water and that the environment was protected when it came to wastewater disposal, Brown said.

The overhaul of the way drinking water was managed was sparked by the 2016 Havelock North campylobacter outbreak, but in announcing the $761 million investment, Ardern said drinking water issues weren’t just limited to that supply.

“At least 34,000 New Zealanders become ill from drinking tap water every year and many communities around the country cannot drink their water without first boiling it. Investing in water infrastructure is about investing in the health of New Zealanders,” she said.

Local authorities often did not have the resources needed to upgrade their drinking water infrastructure and the $761 million investment would kick start this work, Ardern said.

Nationally, the estimated capital cost of upgrading drinking water treatment plans to meet heal standards is between $309 and $574 million.

Low-cost, high production nets results

A Mid Canterbury dairy farm’s low-cost, high production performance has again attracted the judge’s attention in the Dairy Business of the Year awards, winning best Canterbury farm for the second year in a row.

Managed by lower-order sharemilkers Brent and Rebecca Miller, River Terrace Dairy at Carew again recorded the lowest cost of production in the competition at $3.93 a kilogram of milksolids. This was a small increase on the previous year when they were $3.84/kg MS and also won the business resilience award.

by Andrew and Rachele Morris, milked 1120 cows on 326 hectares in the 2018-19 season, on which this year’s competition was based. The Millers are also lower-order sharemilkers on a second Morris property.

The Millers and Morrises also won best Canterbury farm performance, medium input with best financials and the best people leadership awards.

With pasture at 81 per cent of feed input they achieved an impressive production of 503kg MS/cow and 1725kg MS/ha.

Judges described it as a business with strong and consistent performance. Return on total assets was 5.8 per cent.

Other Mid Canterbury farms also featured in the competition, with Craigellachie Dairy Farms on Mitcham Road, owned

by Alan Grant and son Andy, winning the low input with best financials award. The farm milks 2000 cows on 548ha.

Ruapuna Farms, owned by Grant and Jan Early, was also a finalist. Nick and Tina Giera are contract milkers on the Early farm which milked 1414 cows on 375ha in the 2018-19 season.

Yet another crash at hot-spot intersection

McCullough Farm Partnership is a 245ha farm milking 630 cows at Karapiro in partnership with Richard’s parents Bruce and Wyn McCullough. It also won the best Waikato farm performance and lowest environmental impact awards for the second year running.

The McCulloughs showed excellent return on assets at 6.2 per cent, with an operating profit margin of 44 per cent. For every dollar of income generated they retained a high proportion as profit. Good cost control was demonstrated by their low cost of production of $4.46/kg MS. In the lowest environmental impact category, the McCulloughs had the highest environmental score of 10 out of 15 for low nitrogen leaching (26kgN/ha/year), spreading effluent over 54 per cent of the

farm, with significant effluent storage, feedpad use and having 100 per cent of waterways fenced and half of riparian areas planted.

The McCulloughs attribute their success to their genuine love of the land, forward-thinking farming practices and willingness to learn and develop.

Judges Michael Lawrence from Naylor Lawrence and Associates and Massey University dairy production systems expert Professor Danny Donaghy said McCullough Farm Partnership managed to buffer the drop in payout by maintaining a return on capital that was more than 6 per cent.

“They performed consistently well against all metrics and had the second highest return on capital overall, second highest total profit score, highest environmental score and were in the top 10 per cent for human resources.

“This year’s environmental award was again a tightly contested race. Many farms demonstrated improved environmental performance from previous years and others clearly have made sustainable land use their passion.

“The overall winner and runner-up were primarily determined by the environmental score received as a result of the DBOY analysis, however, wider environmental initiatives are considered during the judging process,” the judges said.

Runner-up was a Northland farm Imeson Country, a 74ha farm milking 192 cows run by Greg and Janelle Imeson. It also won the best Northland farm performance and high input with best financials awards.

It had an exceptional return on assets of 7.1 per cent, based on low operating expenses helped by a relatively low asset value.

A third crash has occurred at an Ashburton hot-spot in a month, and less than a week after the Ashburton District Council confirmed they would be making changes at the intersection in a hope to reduce crash numbers.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Middle Road and Belt Road at around 12.40pm yesterday.

A police spokesperson said the crash appeared to involve two vehicles, one of which required a tow following the crash.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one ambulance was sent to the scene which transported one person with moderate injuries to Ashburton Hospital.

Ashburton District Council group manager service delivery Neil McCann told the Guardian last week the council will be undertaking work to increase visibility at the intersection.

“This will involve installing flexible marker posts on the centreline of Middle Road immediately before the intersection, and painting the kerb protusions at the intersection,” he said.

McCann said they were unsure why there had been so many issues with the intersection, but that they would monitor these changes to see if it does make a difference.

He said there were no plans to make the intersection a stop sign intersection, instead of a giveway intersection, as there wasn’t a visibilty issue at the intersection, which is the main reason for implementing stop signs.

A resident, who lives on the corner by the intersection, told the Guardian that he had grown frustrated with the number of crashes occurring at the intersection, which most commonly happened during the day, and often resulted in damage to neighbouring fences and vehicles.

Leading the way as a Welcoming Community Ashburton has become one of just seven places in New Zealand to be officially recognised as a Welcoming Community.

This week the district was recognised as an Established Welcoming Community, the second stage of a four level accreditation model. The project is one advisor Janice McKay has been working on for several months, as part of a project that helps newcomers feel more accepted in their new community.

The Established Welcoming Community status recognises the Ashburton District as having a Welcoming Plan in place, that partners with the community to promote and implement the programme, and where there are strong governing, advisory, project management and monitoring arrangements in place.

Tauranga, Western Bay of Plenty, Palmerston North, Gore, Invercargill and Southland have

also received the accreditation.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said that becoming an Established Welcoming Community was a tremendous achievement and a testimony to the great work happening all around the community to make the district an even more welcoming place to live.

“There has been a lot of support from across the district to help those who are new to our community feel truly accepted here, whether that be in their new school, workplace, neighbourhood or club.

“Employers, community groups and industry leaders have been working closely with the council to implement the activities in our Welcoming Plan, and it’s very encouraging to see everyone’s efforts recognised in this way,” he said.

The council received stage one accreditation in December.

In brief Isolation escapee A man with Covid-19 escaped managed isolation in Auckland for more than an hour and went to a supermarket in the central city, returning later of his own volition. The 32-year-old man, New Zealand’s latest Covid case, arrived in New Zealand from New Delhi, India, on July 3. Health Minister Chris Hipkins has slammed the man’s actions as “selfish” and says he will face charges. But he wouldn’t describe the episode as a failure of the government’s processes, and even though those processes will now be reviewed, he said if anyone should apologise it was the man who broke the law.

Business brisk at info hub

Business is booming at Methven’s new information hub, with day one of the school holidays seeing staff inundated with visitors.

The Mt Hutt Memorial Hall board decided to open the hub when a funding cut to Experience Mid Canterbury saw the town’s i-SITE closed and, two weeks down the track, it is clear the decision was a good one, board chairman Martin Norqvist said.

Whether the information hub becomes a permanent fixture in the memorial hall is still uncertain, however, as its tenure is on a four month trial basis.

It is staffed by the committee’s two part-time staff and that has pushed costs up for the board, with both employees now working longer hours.

nances to the limit as it currently works on a break-even model, with hall bookings paying staff wages.

“We’re now looking at sevendays-a-week, six-hours-a-day and that’s not something the Mt Hutt Hall can sustain. It needs

time to test how this will work.”

The service itself, however, was proving to be a real success, he said.

While the Ashburton District Council’s funding cut to Experience Mid Canterbury had led to the i-SITE’s closure, Nordqvist said the council was supportive of the information hub venture, possibly seeing it as a chance to trial a service that was also planned for the district’s new civic centre and library.

“When the i-SITE closed, there was a general acceptance among the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall board that we needed to make this work, it was just how will we do it.”

The council had also come up with a new branding model for the centre, one that would be easily recognised if other information hubs were established around the district, he said.

The MP who leaked private Covid data has resigned and won’t stand in this year’s election. A statement from Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker said: “Today I am announcing that I will not be standing for re-election for the Southland electorate at the upcoming 2020 election.

I wish to thank the people of Clutha-Southland who I have loved meeting, assisting and representing over the past two and a half years. I sincerely apologise for my actions. I will be making no further comment.”

Murder charge denied A man has denied murdering shot police officer Constable Matthew Hunt and attempting to murder another officer. Hunt, who joined the police in 2017, died after being fatally shot while carrying out a routine traffic stop on June 19. The 24-year-old accused appeared at the High Court at Auckland in front of Justice Simon Moore yesterday.

The man also denied dangerous driving, causing injury to a member of the public. A 30-yearold woman charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder also denied the charge against her.

Jami-Lee Ross in court A trial date for former National Party MP Jami-Lee Ross and three businessmen has been set. Ross, Zhang Yikun, Zheng Shijia and Zheng Hengjia were charged with electoral fraud in February after a 10-month Serious Fraud Office investigation. Justice Moore set a trial date of September 6, 2021.

Pop-up playground bounces into town

A pop-up playground popped up in the Ashburton Sports Hall on Tancred Street yesterday.

Bouncy castle hire company owners, Amber Kohalmi and Shane Scarth, have set up nine of their fourteen castles for some school holiday fun, and are offering bouncing opportunities for all ages, from toddlers to grown-ups.

“The adults get a lot of fun out of them too, they bring out the inner kid in everybody,” Kohalmi said.

The colourful castles certainly make an impressive sight when entering the hall, a vision that is not lost on the children as they enter. Kohalmi said one of her favourite parts of the day is when the children go ‘wow’ and look around in wonder when they come through the door.

Mum Sarah Yeoman said it was nice to have a holiday activity that was inside and not weather dependent. For her, the tricky part of the day was going to be convincing her eighteen-month-old son Harry it was time to leave.

Kohalmi and Scarth, who took over the business in February, said they wanted to take advantage of the school holidays to

get the castles out of storage and stage their first major event since lockdown.

Set up is a time consuming job, taking around three to four hours to complete and the same amount of time is required to pack everything away again. To speed things along, Kohalmi said the whole family get roped in.

“This is a family-run business, so my mum and our children, aged 16, 4 and 3, are all involved.”

The pair are planning to add more castles to their bouncing hire selection. Kohalmi said they order the castles through an overseas website, but then ask them to add bits on to tailor them to their needs.

On hand to supply parents with coffee and soothing hot food was Loren Levy and her food caravan.

It was Levy who sold the bouncy castle business to Kohalmi and Scarth. They are making a great job of running the business, she said.

“We often work in together, they supply the bounce and I supply the food, which works really well,” she said.

The playground is in action again today from 10am to 4pm and then again on July 14, 15 and 16.

Perils of growing food in Covid-19 era New Zealand exports cherries, peaches, nectarines and apricots to 19 countries around the world, but the sector is concerned a lack of labour, and air freight, due to Covid-19 could result in fruit being left unpicked, or it being stuck in New Zealand, flooding the domestic market.

A paper published by industry group Summerfruit NZ said the impact Covid-19 was expected to have on labour and logistics in the upcoming season meant orchardists should consider growing “fewer and bigger” fruit.

The organisation’s acting chief executive, Richard Palmer, said the sector had got most of last season’s fruit to market by the time Covid-19 started causing significant disruptions. He said planning for the upcoming season was necessary to make sure the industry was prepared.

“The primary sector will play a massive part in New Zealand’s post-Covid recovery and summer fruit exports are a part of that,” he said.

Palmer said by growing fewer and bigger fruit, it would allow a high quality crop to get into key markets quicker and differentiate New Zealand’s exports from overseas competitors.

He said the key for growers would be to intensively manage this season’s crop. This included setting fruit trees up correctly, with not too many buds on them as well as getting pest and disease control right.

A strawberry grower said foreign workers were essential, more RSE workers should be allowed, and a decision to do that had to be made early.

“There may be some tough decisions in the packhouse as well.”

Mike Russell, from Russell Plums in the Hawkes Bay, said that orchardists were adaptable and would have to grow what the market wanted.

“If the market wants a small volume of fruit and a bigger sized crop, well, that’s what we will grow them,” he said.

This point was made repeatedly by agricultural sectors at a recent Parliamentary Primary Produc-

tion Select Committee.

Representatives of the strawberry industry told the committee that they had done all they could to attract New Zealand workers – even growing strawberries on tables so that pickers don’t have to toil all day bent double.

But it was still not enough.

Success for low-methane sheep breeding project Low methane appears to be a breedable trait that does not affect economic value in sheep, and could lead to a cumulative 1 per cent reduction in emissions each year, farmers have been told.

AgResearch scientist Suzanne Rowe told a webinar organised by the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Council that research into such animals had been going on for a decade.

Rowe said a study of 1000 sheep, divided into high emitting and low emitting animals, found these traits were passed on to successive generations.

“After three generations we have 11 per cent less methane per kilogram of feed eaten,” she said.

Rowe went on to say that 11 per cent less methane did not come at a financial cost to the farmer – the opposite in fact.

“The low methane animals are doing really well,” Rowe said. “They are up with the elite flocks, while the high methane animals are pretty average.”

She listed several advantages of the low methane animals: faster lamb growth, more lean meat, less fat, better parasite resistance and better wool growth.

“So, we have a combination of factors that show that low methane sheep are healthy and productive.

“That is where we have come to in the science.

“Low methane is passed onto the next generation, we can breed for it, there are no detrimental side effects, so we feel we can roll it out further into the national flock.”

Rowe said the potential effect of this was a 1 per cent reduction in methane emissions, cumulatively, every year, and able to benefit each individual farm.

“This was an accountable and measurable way of reducing farm emissions, and would be attributable at the farm gate.

“So breeders would have the opportunity to take this up themselves and be able to have an impact on their own farm.”

He predicted this year’s strawberry crop would be down 10 to 15 per cent on last year.

Other sectors turned up at the select committee to make the same point, including the wine industry.

It dominates some regions like Marlborough and is dependent on RSE workers to produce its product.

Philip Gregan of New Zealand Winegrowers said he was extremely worried about the coming season.

“If there is one thing that is really occupying the minds of growers, it is how do they bring in vintage 2021,” he told the committee.

Gregan was then challenged by National MP David Carter.

“What are the answers, if you are wanting to harvest in 2021 and the borders are still closed, how are you going to manage?” Carter asked.

“We don’t really have all the answers at the moment,” Gregan said.

“There is mechanisation that can speed things up a bit, but at the moment we don’t really have the answers. We will be working on that as a top priority.”

The government has agreed to allow some workers in, despite the Covid-19 restrictions, such as film crew and scanners whose job it is to assess sheep pregnancy rates.

Milk delivery brings back nostalgic memories

T

he chime of the milk truck making its way up the street is a memory that will never leave you. A constant part of life growing up, its presence each day at the front gate was a part of life.

For me, it was local driver Charlie Hill, sitting in the driver’s seat with his beaming smile and a friendly wave while his band of helpers were hanging out the back of the truck ready and waiting to make their next dash to someone’s door.

They’re days that are no more, unfortunately. For some strange reason it became more viable to nip down to the supermarket, petrol station or dairy and pick up a bottle of milk than it did to have it delivered to your own door.

Go figure.

But maybe, just maybe – there’s the beginning of a comeback unfolding in a small part of New Zealand. A place where some lucky local residents are getting the thrill of having their milk delivered to them, it’s even in a glass bottle for extreme nostalgic measures.

A 17-year-old from Golden Bays, at the top of the South Island, has begun a milk delivery business where he’s dropping off glass bottles of milk to residents.

Sourcing his own milk from local dairy farms, installing his own chiller and setting up a delivery business that is being met with great enthusiasm from his local community.

It’s really great stuff, albeit something probably quite insignificant in the grand scheme of life, but it’s also further evidence of how far removed we’ve become from what was once the normal way of life.

Remember Mr Whippy being a regular in the summer time, making their way up and down the streets? Or the Rocket DVD van that made its way around the district where you were able to hire DVDs from your own driveway?

The list is endless, the memories are plentiful.

They were certainly easier times, that’s for sure.

Self-inflicted leak sinks National

L

ate news reveals National warhorse of days gone by, ex President Michelle Boag, having unexpectedly found herself in possession of the names and details of a number of current Covid-19 cases, chose – for reasons inexplicable, and as yet unknown – to on-pass this highly personal information to the National MP for Clutha-Southland, the young, “green as green”, Hamish Walker.

He, in a flurry of misplaced high dudgeon, at once forwarded same to the media. The media, to its credit – and the media rarely finds itself with free credit on its hands – realising the sensitivity of the details Walker had chosen to send them, declined to publish the names of the eighteen patients involved.

Walker’s justification for his actions seems to have been the spurious argument that such names should have had password protection and that they didn’t was a failure on the part of the government.

The much-harassed National leader, Todd Muller, has described Walker’s actions as an “error of judgement”. To that one would have to reply there are “errors of

judgement” and “errors of judgement”. This one would appear to be in the career-ending category.

The reason for Boag’s choice of recipient for her highly-charged personal secrets remains a mystery on which National’s senior mandarins are now working urgently.

As Minister of State Services, the overworked Chris Hipkins, seems to be the go-to government man for comment and sustained scorn. And “why not”? I hear you ask.

Unlike the fantasy world in which the demented President of the United States inhabits, in the real world – as real, even, as Aotearoa, NZ – democracy still flourishes, and the virus is fought to a standstill.

Sadly, however, this is a killer virus of indeterminate length and strength, thus the threat of a

return still lurks requiring ruthless monitoring.

Also needed, a round-the-clock watch on recent arrivals now in quarantine, especially those who recklessly take it upon themselves to break out of confinement in the middle of the night and go off on a Covid-spreading spree.

On the political front, the compulsive-cycling Health Minister, Dr Clark, has finally been released to wander where he will, and been replaced by the youthful, auburn-haired and already multi-challenged Minister, Chris Hipkins, who, not satisfied with merely being the Minister of Education – a weighty portfolio at the best of times – has added to his brief the equally demanding, Ministry of Health.

One can reasonably assume a Minister of Health, during a pandemic, would be at least moderately busy but here is a man ready and willing to take on the joint burdens of education and health and, no less, now State Services as well.

Unsurprisingly, the gossip in parliamentary bar and tearoom, features the possible future of this potential Labour Titan.

Is he waiting, in the proverbi-

al wings, to be the successor to Jacinda, should she, perhaps, find herself “with child” again and decide to replace Motherhood of the Nation with the marginally less demanding position of being mother to her children.

At a conspicuously youthfullooking forty-one, Hipkins has the air of a man in for the long haul but expecting to make it to the top with quite a lot of that haul still to go. His comments on the latest National fiasco were suitably measured but very much to the point.

Meanwhile, as the ripples from this latest self-inflicted disaster reverberate across the political pond, Todd Muller must, metaphorically, at least, be tearing his hair out while wondering how he could have inherited a bunch of such errant colleagues.

One has to feel his troubles may still not be over.

QUICK RECIPE

No churn caramel ice cream 400g can dulce de leche 1 1/4 C heavy cream 1-2t flake sea salt, divided 1-3T alcohol – bourbon, brandy or coffee liqueur (optional) ■■ Place dulce de leche, cream and 1 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl or in the bowl of a stand mixer.

■■ Using a hand mixer, or stand mixer, whisk until mixture thickens.

■■ Taste and whisk in more salt if you like.

■■ Gently whisk in alcohol (the more you add, the softer the ice cream’s consistency will be).

Mt Somers make it two from two Mt Somers joined Methven at the top of the table in the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy for Senior B rugby at the weekend when they produced a convincing performance to beat Southern in front of their home supporters.

The two sides have both had two wins from two matches – with both also having had a bye – however two other teams have also each had two wins from the opening three rounds.

Mt Somers overcame Southern 32-15 and ensured that the Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup stayed in their clubrooms for another week – a piece of silverware they are certain to hope to retain for as long as possible.

In other results from the weekend’s action, Celtic ground out a good victory over Rakaia, walking away with five points for their 24-14 victory on Celtic Club Day while Allenton and Collegiate fought out a belter of a match with the former winning 52-43 in a high scoring affair.

Methven and Mt Somers now sit atop the table unbeaten in their two matches while both Allenton and Collegiate sit tied for second with 10 competition points each.

In this week’s action, Allenton will host Celtic at the Allenton Rugby Club in what should be a tight tussle between two solid sides. The Bruce Beckley Memorial will go back on the line when Mt Somers travel across the plains to play the winless Rakaia and the final match of the round will see Southern and Methven battle it out in a curtain-raiser to the clubs’ two senior sides locking horns later in the afternoon.

Collegiate sit this week out with the bye.

All Black jersey awaits Sotutu Breakout Blues star Hoskins Sotutu has added further weight to indications his international future lies in an All Blacks jersey.

The 21-year-old No. 8 has been a standout performer in Super Rugby this year, his rapid rise thrusting him into conversations concerning the selection of the next New Zealand squad.

Sotutu is not only eligible for the All Blacks but also Fiji through his dad, former Blues and Auckland utility Waisake, and England through his mother.

The best hint yet about where the former Sacred Heart High School student’s allegiance lay came on Monday when his contract extension with the Blues was announced, keeping him in New Zealand until at least the end of the 2022 Super season.

After Blues training on Tuesday, Sotutu said his focus was on playing well at Super level and he would make decisions about his international future as they came.

He did, though, say that as a Kiwi-born and raised product, playing for the All Blacks would be like playing for the Blues, playing for a team he cared about.

Sotutu said he was simply stunned he was even being talked about as a potential All Black.

“I’m pretty shocked to be honest.

“This is my first year really in the mix [at the Blues] and getting a lot of game time, so getting those comments is quite surreal.

“But I’m just trying to play well for the Blues and as long as I keep playing well for the Blues I guess the other things will come.”

It would be a bold person to bet against things panning out in that fashion, based on how Sotutu had progressed already in 2020.

After playing a key role in the Blues 5-2 record prior to the Covid-19 suspension, he had been superb through the team’s first three matches of Super Rugby Aotearoa.

Sotutu led the competition in offloads and tackles won after the completion of round three, and was fourth in carries and lineouts won.

“I’m playing well because I love the [Blues] and I want the team to succeed. That’s a big factor in how I’m playing at the moment.

“I feel like it was pretty easy [to re-sign]. It’s like, I’m playing good rugby for a team that I love and all’s good.”

For his coaches and team-mates, a major reason behind his form had been his progression off the field.

Hoskins Sotutu noted, while veteran hooker James Parsons did not hesitate when asked what had impressed him most about Sotutu this year. “His maturity off the field, his preparation.

“It’s no secret if you get your prep right, you’ll get the rewards on Saturday, and that’s the biggest shift he’s made.”

Sotutu agreed, and said it was something that had come out of the review of his rookie season in 2019.

“I’m just trying to get involved and really taking it upon myself to get the team back to where we should be.

“I’ve just put myself out there more. Having more conversations with the coaches and senior players about about games, reviews and stuff like.

“Last year I was quite quiet and kept to myself, first year jitters sort of thing. I just decided [I needed] to change things up this year.”

There was no doubt he had done that.

Having started 2020 simply wanting to nail down a starting spot in the Blues, Sotutu found himself as a contender for the next All Blacks squad.

Parsons said, when that squad was eventually announced, his young team-mate was “absolutely” worthy of being in the mix.

“There’s no doubt. Kieran Read’s obviously left so it’s open there but there’s a lot of other guys.

“There’s good competition for him out there and that’s the beauty of the All Blacks, isn’t it. You can be talked about but it’s one thing being talked about and another thing getting there.

“He just needs to keep his head down, keep doing what he’s doing and stay consistent and the rewards will come.”

Wallabies upbeat about All Blacks encounter New Wallabies coach Dave Rennie remains confident his first international assignment will be against the All Blacks in Wellington in October despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

Officially a week into his latest role, the former Chiefs coach is still a month away form being able to join his new team on the training pitch in Australia.

Having completed two weeks of quarantine in Auckland, Rennie is spending a fortnight in his home town of Palmerston North before departing for Sydney where another 14 days of isolation awaits.

Rennie told Sky Sport his sole focus is October 10, which he remains adamant will be the first Bledisloe Cup Test date in Wellington, even though details of the trans-Tasman series are yet to be announced.

If correct, he’d have about three weeks’ preparation with Australian players after the completion of the Super Rugby Australia domestic competition which finishes on September 19.

“It’s not an enormous amount of time so we’re getting a lot of planning done,” Rennie said.

“Obviously there’s talk about 2023 (World Cup) but we need to win now.

“I think we need to have high expectations and work hard to achieve it.”

Rennie is encouraged by the recent success of Australian age group teams against New Zealand and won’t rule out throwing young inexperienced players into the Bledisloe Cup. He believes the youngsters could inject the positivity he’s after, given it’s 18 years since the Wallabies won a series against the All Blacks.

“It’s so much about belief when you haven’t beaten the All Blacks for so long. Players lack confidence,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of young kids that have had success against NZ teams so they’re not scarred from the past.

“While there’s probably more depth in NZ, our job is to assemble 30-40 guys who we think can be really competitive.”

Momentum on the court required

The pecking order in Mid Canterbury premier netball will become a lot clearer by the end of tonight as teams hit the courts for the second round of matches of the competition at the EA Networks Centre.

Celtic, Methven and Hampstead all picked up wins in the opening round of the competition seven days ago, to begin on the right foot, and will look to carry that momentum into tonight’s round.

Last season’s runners-up, Celtic – who put together a clinical performance last week to beat defending champions College in the opening match of the competition – will face a determined Mt Somers side, smarting from a defeat at the hands of Methven.

With depth across the court, as per the norm for the green machine, Celtic should be able to account for their opponents tonight but will also be cautious of allowing them too much control of the match.

Methven and Hampstead will take each other on in the final match of tonight’s round.

The match should create plenty of interest with Hampstead’s strong defensive end going headto-head with a powerful attacking third from the Methven side.

By the end of the match one of the two sides will have two wins to their name for the season and be in a good position to push forward for higher honours early on in proceedings.

Tonight’s other match will see United and College lock horns with both sides smarting after defeats seven days ago.

College were good as a losing side behind Celtic and showed their usual amount of determination with a never-say-die attitude which they will need to bring to the court tonight against a passionate United side who, on their day, are capable of knocking over any team in the competition.

Celtic and Mt Somers start the night’s proceedings at 6.15pm as the first game before United and College at 7.15pm with Methven and Hampstead rounding out the night at 8.15pm.

In Premier 2 action, Hampstead B and Celtic B kick off the night with Southern and College B playing the middle match before Methven and Celtic C round out the night.

In Premier 3, College 10A have the bye with Southern B and United B playing in one match and Hampstead U18A and Methven playing the other.

Hampstead goal attack Nicole Hands will prove critical tonight in her side’s match against Methven in the second round of Premier netball for the season.

Holder not interested in personal battle with Stokes West Indies skipper Jason Holder says he is not interested in personal accolades ahead of the first test against England which started last night despite it being billed as a clash between the world’s best two all-rounders.

Holder, trying to become the first West Indies captain to win a series in England since Viv Richards in 1988, is top of the ICC’s all-rounder rankings with Ben Stokes, who will skipper England for the first time this week, second.

“I don’t really like to get into these personal accolades or ICC rankings,” Holder told a news conference ahead of the match at the Ageas Bowl, the first international cricket fixture since the novel coronavirus pandemic struck.

“Ben has always been talked up and quite rightfully so, he’s a really good cricketer, but the ICC rankings say that I’m the No. 1 ranked all-rounder and maybe don’t get as much credit as probably I deserve, who knows?

“I don’t get caught up with it to be honest. Journalists are there to write their stories, I am merely here to play cricket.

It’s always a good battle on the field when you face competitors like Stokesy, face competitors around the world.”

Holder, 28, has been described by former England skipper Michael Atherton as the best West Indies captain since Richards.

He led his team to a 2-1 series victory over England in the Caribbean in 2019, scoring his

maiden test double hundred in the first test at Bridgetown that led to a 381-run win.

Though England won 2-1 at home in 2017, West Indies managed a memorable victory at Headingley.

West Indies have a formidable-looking bowling attack and Holder believes enough experienced heads in the squad to make things extremely difficult for Stokes who will be standing in for Joe Root who misses the game because of paternity leave.

“If you look at the calibre of players we’ve got – Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope have had success here in England and that is just to name a few,” he said.

“I am more than confident that these guys will do well in this series.”

Holder will be embarking on his 33rd test as captain and, having reached 100 test wickets against India in Jamaica last year, he needs only 102 runs to reach 2000 in test cricket.

Fight Night off to end of year Kiwi heavyweight Shane Cameron will be a special guest at the Fight Night South event to be held in Methven later this year.

Mid Canterbury boxing fans are set to be treated to a spectacle inside the ring later in the year.

A new Fight Night South event, which will feature Kiwi heavyweight star Shane Cameron, has been announced after organisers were forced to pull the plug earlier in the year.

Fight Night South was original-

ly slated to be held in Ashburton on June 5, however it was postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Organisers confirmed the event will now be held at Methven’s Mt Hutt Memorial Hall on December 5, with another Ashburton fight night ear-marked for June 2021.

December’s boxing extravaganza will feature a total of 10

corporate boxing bouts with the night to be hosted by local Dame Lynda Topp.

Professional heavyweight Shane Cameron has again been confirmed as a special guest for the occasion.

The former Commonwealth cruiserweight champion said he was excited to help launch the event.

“I know first-hand that there

is some real boxing talent in the region and I’m looking forward to meeting the fighters during their training and to see who shines on the night,” Cameron said.

The night will also feature an auction with proceeds to be donated to the Methven Rugby Club.

Event organisers say the focus now shifts to fighter recruitment for the event.

Each contender will be required to complete a rigorous 12week training programme with Garage Box, Methven and will have to pass a number of regulatory medical checks.

“We’re on a mission to bring quality boxing events to the South Island,” Ri Ra event manager Gary Manning said.
