Death investigated By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A person has died in rural Mid Canterbury after being crushed by a piece of farm machinery over the weekend. Yesterday afternoon WorkSafe advised of the incident which happened in the Montalto area on Saturday, stating that the incident had occurred in South Can-
terbury, inland from Timaru. Emergency services were called to the area around 8pm on Saturday after reports of a man being crushed by machinery were received. A police spokesperson said they were called to what appeared to be a workplace incident. As a result of the accident, WorkSafe had been advised and
the spokesperson added that they were not in a position to release any further information at this stage. In a statement yesterday, WorkSafe confirmed they are investigating the death. “We are investigating, and can make no further comment,” they said. “Our investigations can take up
to a year to complete.” St John spokesman Gerard Campbell confirmed that an ambulance attended, but that nobody was transported from the scene. The Mayfield Voluntary Rural Fire Force were also called to the incident, with the Fire and Emergency New Zealand incident reporting website confirming they
were called to a medical call at 7.55pm. WorkSafe were also investigating the death of another man that occurred earlier this year at the site of the old KiwiBank on East Street in Ashburton. A man was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition following the accident, and later died in hospital.
