Man seriously injured in crash Birthday treatP3

A man is in a serious condition in Christchurch Hospital after a serious accident just out of Ashburton in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police were called around 3.15am to reports that a car had crashed into a power pole on Ashburton Staveley Road.

The sole occupant of the car, who was

critically injured, was flown to Christchurch Hospital by Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Ashburton police said they would not be making any further comment on the crash while the Serious Crash Unit investigated.

The accident, between Driscolls Road and Walkhams Road, was also attended by two appliances from the Ashburton

Fire Brigade. Station officer Robbie Maw said firefighters had to cut a man from the vehicle, which took about half an hour.

They had to wait for about half an hour for the power to be isolated before they could begin work.

Maw said one power pole was down.

Traffic was diverted while emergency crews were at the scene.

Local trio wins AgriKids title

A talented trio from Ashburton Intermediate School has won the hotly-contested AgriKidsNZ Grand Final that is part of the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition that wound up in Invercargill on Saturday night.

Austin Watson, Henry Gray and Tim Connelly-Whyte, who’re named the AIS Fencers, excelled across the AgriKids competition, which saw 21 teams from around the country tackle challenges testing their practical and theoretical skills.

Competitors had to assemble a beehive, put together a water trough, sit an

exam and cook a pancake with no recipe.

“My favourite was the Honda module where we had to fit tyres onto a quad bike and tighten all the nuts,” Henry said.

“We also had to tension the chain on a two-wheeler,” he said.

The AIS Fencers also picked up awards for their practical skills and for having the best costumes in the grand parade.

Also competing in the AgriKids final were Lachlan Rooney, Ruby Giera and Annabel Harmer of Mt Somers Springburn School, while Harriet Stock and Alex Jones from Ashburton College competed in the TeenAg final.

AgriKids is a competition for primary school students aged eight to 13 years,

while TeenAg caters for students of high school age.

South Otago sheep farmer Logan Wallace was named the 50th FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

Wallace said he was ecstatic, as winning the title has always been a dream of his.

Runner-up was Cameron Black, a Christchurch-based rural consultant for New Zealand Agri Brokers.

Black, who has previously worked as a banker in Ashburton, won the Aorangi regional final in April. It was his fourth time competing in a regional final.

The Hinds Young Farmers’ Club member moved to Christchurch last December to take up his current role.

Sun started her music studies with the piano at the age of six, was a member of the musical club and a student of Carolie Andrew while attending Ashburton College and was awarded the musical club’s annual scholarship in 2012.

After attending Burnside High School she began studying piano performance at the New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University in Wellington.

During that time she took up harp lessons after hearing the instrument played live, and then changed her major to harp the following year.

Sun spent the past academic year studying her new instrument at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of music, under the tutelage of professor Elzbieta Szmyt. Later this month she will attend the Alice Giles Kiola Winter Harp Camp in Australia before returning to the New Zealand School of Music to continue her studies with principle harpist of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Carolyn Mills.

Sun told yesterday afternoon’s audience that she was excited to be back in Ashburton.

Special treat for Jean

Ashburton’s Jean Kingan is flying high after a very special last week and a half.

On June 27 Jean turned 100, which was followed by a birthday party the following Sunday, attended by around 80 people from around the country and Australia.

Then yesterday, her great grandson, Lachlan Kingan, took her for an hour-long flight around Mid Canterbury, taking in parts of the region that held special significance for her.

Two years ago Lachlan, who is 15, told his great grandmother “when you turn 100 I’ll take you up for a flight”.

Yesterday’s flight took off from Ashburton Airport and flew over Chertsey before heading to Overdale, where Jean brought up her four children.

Then it was on to Rakaia for a quick circuit over the town, before flying to Mt Somers, where Jean grew up on her parents’ farm. From there it was back towards the coast to take in Lake Hood, before returning to Ashburton.

Jean said she enjoyed the flight, although there were a few bumps around Mt Somers due to the weather.

Flying must be in Jean’s family’s blood.

Her husband Russell served overseas in World War Two as a pilot and there are at least six past or present commercial pilots on her side of the family.

As for Lachlan, he has plans to become a commercial pilot himself.

a public stand against this pair with their vile views. This is to be totally expected and an indication that I’m speaking out exactly as I should be.”

A person is dead after a house fire in Nelson. Police are attending the scene in Murphy Street in the suburb of Toi Toi. The scene is cordoned off and an investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. Robberies methodically planned

helley Lee Williams’ life was methodically planned on scraps of paper.

One note in the 41-year-old’s Oamaru home reminded her to trim the shrubs on Sunday and return her mother’s hedge trimmer. Another, similarly mundane, listed lemons atop a shopping list.

There were some, though, which hinted at the transgender woman’s darker intentions.

“Run to Dunedin & or Chch,” it said.

“Hit fish n chip shops. Small shops holding cash day & night times.”

After three armed robberies in Dunedin in as many weeks, the police breakthrough came when a clear image of the offender was isolated in CCTV footage.

An officer recognised the imposing figure, bundled into a bulky jacket, gloves and balaclava, with a bag slung over her shoulder.

On June 29 last year they raided Williams’ Oamaru home and found not only items associated with the hat-trick of heists but evidence the woman planned to commit many more.

“It was an incredibly unique situation, for us to walk into the address to complete a search warrant, to find those notes in neat little piles,” the officer in charge of the case, Senior Constable Tracey Bransgrove said.

Some contained enigmatic references to “gloves, keys, tools” and there were several mentions of “Chch”.

But the criminal intent in others was unmistakable.

“Rob = shops and jewel store.

Heavy gold chains & bangles, diamonds etc,” she wrote.

“Go in & don’t speak. Just hand a note & point gun.”

Williams planned to “do Fleur’s Place over” – the renowned Moeraki seafood restaurant.

Owner Fleur Sullivan was stunned when informed by the Otago Daily Times she was on the robber’s hit list.

Less fortunate was Ashburton antiques dealer Jim Heath, who also appeared on one of the inadvertent mini-manifestos.

Williams turned up at his home on the night of June 12.

He opened the door and was confronted by a face obscured with camouflage paint, and a right hand holding a gun.

Williams calmly demanded entry.

The 79-year-old was not in compliant mood.

“As I was thinking it, I was doing it,” Mr Heath said.

He took her down in a “rugbystyle charge” and the pair rolled down the front steps.

Mr Heath said he was surprised by his instinctive reaction but attributed it partly to his former sporting pursuits.

“I was a pretty good tackler,” he said – although he admitted that was 50 years ago.

Williams regathered herself and pointed the imitation pistol at Mr Heath’s wife Ida before running off.

“If you muck me around I will shoot you in the leg,” Williams warned, before leaving with $550.

On June 23, the aggravated robberies ramped up.

First, Williams targeted Sue Todd Antiques, then brazenly followed it with a stick-up at the Elgin Food Market, in Mornington, an hour later.

Sue Todd told the ODT she had been concentrating on her computer when Williams strolled in asking to see her gold and silver.

When the masked intruder’s tone changed, she said she knew the situation was serious.

Mrs Todd, though, was unafraid.

“I really didn’t feel like I was going to get killed. He was very softly spoken and very well spoken.”

She even formulated plans of her own to strike the offender where it hurt.

“He was a big guy. I’m five foot five and I’m thinking ‘how can I knee him in the balls or something?”‘ she said.

Mrs Todd handed over nine pieces, valued at $5520.

As the police search for the armed robber heated up, so did their requests for information from the public.

Because of the balaclava, victims’ descriptions of the offender were vague.

Officers were sure, though, that they were looking for a man.

Yet they were not.

Shelley Williams aka Shelley Montana – who has been listed in court documents as “entertainer” and “hairdresser” – was born Kerrin William Gutsell.

Courts have been grappling with her transgender status since 2010, when Judge Paul Kellar sentenced her at the Oamaru District Court for a range of violence and driving offences.

Though he jailed her for seven months, he noted she had been in voluntary segregation at a men’s prison and was “very mindful” incarceration would be harsher for her than others.

Williams regularly appeared in court since then: for smashing windows with a cricket bat in Corstorphine, spitting in the face of a police officer in George Street, shoplifting a bottle of whiskey in Oamaru.

Often violent, always impulsive.

So what drove her to commit the serious premeditated crimes?

Williams put it down to a hefty credit-card debt.

The reality appeared to be more complex.

Members of the woman’s family were reluctant to go into detail about her problems but said there was much more to her story.

Some of the blanks were filled at Williams’ sentencing at the Auckland District Court in March.

The ODT was only recently provided with court documents which revealed the defendant’s “very troubled background”.

Judge Lisa Tremewan detailed Williams’ long-standing addiction demons and a psychological

trauma grounded in her turbulent childhood.

“From a young age Ms Williams displayed female behaviours and dress that resulted in her being subjected to harassment and ridicule both regretfully within her family in some quarters and as well the wider community,” the judge said.

“There was a view taken that physical punishment might be resorted to as correcting what was seen by some as an abnormality.”

The court heard Williams had been diagnosed with histrionic personality disorder, gender dysphonia and obsessive compulsive disorder.

It was the latter which perhaps sealed her fate during the police search of her home.

Senior Const Bransgrove said the scene was far different from that of a typical search-warrant execution.

“The clothing she wore [to commit the robberies] was laid out beautifully in the bathroom ... everything was just laid out,” she said.

The coat was turned inside out to dry, gloves and balaclava carefully draped over the bathtub and an overnight bag beneath them at the ready.

On the floor of another room lay a plastic pistol next to Williams’ nail polish.

Judge Tremewan noted the defendant’s “concerning history” but there was nothing like her most recent crimes.

Williams wrote a letter to the court shedding further light on her circumstances.

She said she wanted to deal with her problems in a better way in future and was receiving support to do so.

Finally now she would face those challenges as a woman, legally.

The court received a copy of Williams’ birth certificate which had been amended to declare her as female.

She was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, which will be served at a women’s prison.

Shooting victims in bed Police have confirmed two of the victims of a fatal Hamilton shooting were lying in bed when a gunman entered the property and opened fire.

Robert Nelson, 23, died shielding his partner in bed in the shooting early yesterday at a house in Matthews Cres, Melville.

His body remains at the property.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said the shooting appeared to have been targeted to the address and therefore the public should not be scared for their safety.

He confirmed the shooter was still on the loose.

“We are going to work hard to find out who these people are,” Patterson said.

He could not comment on whether the fatal shooting was gang-related.

Patterson confirmed two of the victims were in bed and getting ready for sleep when they were shot.

Nelson’s 20-year-old partner Kahlee and a 17-year-old male also at the house, believed to be a family friend, were also seriously injured.

The two injured victims were taken to Waikato Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson yesterday said the woman was in a serious condition in the High Dependency Unit, while the teenager was critical in Intensive Care.

A fourth person at the property was not injured.

Her brother had died “covering his girlfriend” from the bullets, Erin said.

She was “absolutely gutted” and described her brother as her “best friend” and a “fun, happy guy” with a “bright future”.

and Ernie you know. It is absolutely gutting for us,” she said. “He had such a bright future. He was a chef and just getting his apprenticeship sorted out and about to move on to real nice restaurant soon.

“He will be remembered as the fun, happy guy. He always had a smile on his face and a little sparkle in his eye. He was the life of the party and has been taken so savagely.”

Robert Nelson also had a younger brother and two half siblings.

“The family loves him and the world lost a really great person. He has touched a lot of people’s lives and they are now going to be missing such a bright person,” Erin Nelson said.

Driver spoken to over Chch hit-and-run Police have interviewed the driver of the vehicle believed to be involved in the fatal hit-and-run in Dallington, Christchurch, that killed Steffan Pearce-Loe. Pearce-Loe was engaged to be married and a police post-mortem examination indicated the 30-year-old Christchurch man died from injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said Pearce-Loe was walking his two dogs across Gayhurst Road, just north of the bridge over the Avon River in the early hours of Thursday morning, when he was struck by a vehicle.

Cottam said police had reviewed CCTV footage as well as video supplied by the public to narrow the search to a particular type of vehicle.

“Following good old-fashioned police work, an eagle-eyed detective saw a vehicle matching the description with damage consistent with the crash in the driveway of an address several kilometres away from the scene.”

A forensic examination of the vehicle was still being carried out and a decision on charges will be made in due course.

A lot of beef over a burger L

Which, and you can call me cynical, would have been welcomed by the marketing team at Air New Zealand.

The airline is well known for its edgy marketing approach and it not afraid to stir the pot a bit if it sees benefits in doing so.

In this latest case, for no advertising outlay at all, they were suddenly across all forms of media. You can’t buy that sort of publicity or coverage. Well, maybe you can, but it would cost

a pretty penny.

My advice to those who think the airline’s latest addition to its menu is a betrayal is to take a breath for a minute.

We need to remember that yes, Air New Zealand has added another vegetarian option for its high-end customers flying one particular route to choose from, but if you want red meat on those flights you can still get it.

It’s not as if that choice is no longer there. And it’s not as if there’s not other vegetarian options already offered by both Air New Zealand and other airlines around the world.

And surely, the LA run is a pretty likely choice for that sort of “alternative” option.

After all, Impossible Foods is

Comments were flying thick and fast – and people were certainly getting steamed up – over the airline’s decision to introduce Impossible Burgers, formed from plant-based material, to its menu in the Business Premier cabin of the two flights a day that it operates between Los Angles and Auckland.

Some farmers, farming leaders and even Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters weighed into the argument, affronted by what they seemed to see as an affront to the nation’s farming sector.

Those are marketing arguments the agricultural sector is going to face time and again in the future, so we might as well get used to them.

The farming community could possibly even see Air New Zealand’s move as a bit of a reminder that alternative proteins to meat in the form of “fake” meat are on the way and have been for some time.

A wake-up call, if you like.

The risks of taking soft approach on drugs I

have been saddened by a number of different media reports published within the past few weeks which all point to the harm that drugs are causing in our society.

One of these reports was about the results of a study by the Automobile Association (AA) which found that drug-impaired drivers are now involved in more fatal crashes on New Zealand’s roads than drink-drivers.

The AA’s research found that 79 drivers involved in fatal crashes last year later tested positive for drugs, compared to 70 drivers who were above the legal alcohol limit or refused to be tested.

The statistics show an alarming increase in the role of drugs in fatal crashes over the past four years. In 2014, 14 of the drivers involved in fatal accidents tested positive for drugs, compared to 48 who had been drinking alcohol.

Those in favour of decriminalising drug use may point to this as evidence that our current

approach to drug-taking is not working and we should therefore take a more liberal approach.

However, while I am comfortable with very ill people having access to medicinal cannabis products, I am opposed to legalising loose leaf cannabis use.

There are a number of reasons that I hold this view. One of these is that smoking cannabis has been shown to be very harmful to the developing teenage brain and can increase the risk of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.

We already have a concerning number of young people in our communities suffering from mental health problems

and legalising cannabis gives the impression that it is safe for teenagers to use the drug.

While cannabis use is currently illegal the police do not generally prosecute people solely for smoking marijuana, as their focus is appropriately on prosecuting suppliers of the drug.

Another reason why I do not support the legalisation of marijuana is that many users of even more harmful drugs such as methamphetamine have indicated that their drug use started with marijuana.

While I am not suggesting that everyone who uses marijuana will progress to harder drugs, encouraging any form of drug use by legalising it is a very risky approach to take.

This brings me to the other media reports I mentioned at the beginning of this column, both of which were about methamphetamine use and both of which made me very sad.

The first report was about the rising incidence of mothers

smoking meth during pregnancy. According to a paediatric specialist, one or two babies born at Auckland’s Starship Hospital every week have been exposed to meth in the womb and in some cases newborns have to be weaned off the drug using morphine.

The second was a report about a couple who had been jailed for the horrific abuse and neglect of their three young children in a case that the judge described as “despicable and sickening”.

Both parents were heavy methamphetamine users.

Methamphetamine is a scourge on New Zealand communities and we need to be clear in our position that recreational drug use is not OK. An award-winning show billed as being “a drama that’ll make you laugh … or a comedy that’ll make you cry” – is on the way to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on July 22.

Seed follows four women as they encounter dilemmas of modern reproduction – whether getting pregnant, staying pregnant or becoming un-pregnant.

It was the winner of the 2014 Adam New Zealand Play Award, and was described by the judges as highly entertaining, funny and sophisticated.

Written by Elisabeth Easther, directed by Kerryn Palmer and produced by Bronwyn Bent, it also boasts an impressive cast.

Playing Sophie Hambleton is Hilary, a Toi Whakaari – NZ Drama School graduate and award winning actress who can currently be seen playing Carol O’Driscoll in all four seasons of Westside on TV3.

The Napa Valley is literally groaning with the huge number of wineries and vineyards.

he fabulously fertile and scenically blessed valleys of Sonoma and Napa groan with over 900 wineries.

Before taking in some tasting highlights in fancy-pants Napa, I first ventured to the Sonoma Valley, its folksy, down-to-earth neighbour, studded in historic gravitas.

The town was founded in 1823

as the Mission of San Francisco Solano, the last mission to be established by the Spanish Franciscans in California after first setting about their Christian colonisation in 1769.

If Spring Mountain Winery looks familiar it is because it was the filming location of the hit soap opera, Falcon Crest.

The whitewashed adobe mission served as a Mexican outpost and is steeped in dramatic history, which is fascinating to explore, including the Bear Flag Revolt in 1846, culminating in the United States taking control of California from Mexico.

Be sure to pop in to Sonoma Cheese Factory, where the free tastings are plentiful and the flavour range stupendous.

Intertwined with the Californian wine industry, it was the missionaries who planted the first vines to make wine for their Mass.

The bucolic splendour of Sonoma’s 17-mile long valley, framed by tumbling hills, wreathed in vineyards, is soothingly photogenic.

I visited in early spring, when the hills are verdant and the manicured vineyards are carpeted with mustard flowers.

If you’re visiting in autumn, burnished light and auburn leaves accentuate the sense of calming ambience.

Famed for its boutique and family-operated wineries, tastings tend to be cheaper in Sonoma – in some cases, free.

Some highly recommended stops include Madonna Estate and Gundlach-Bundschu, who both produce sublime merlots.

Chateau St. Jean is another starring specimen, the pioneer of pinot noir and chardonnay in Sonoma County, offering superb

tastings paired with cheese and charcuterie. Pop into the village of Glen Ellen, once the home of famed author, Jack London. The charred remains of his enormous house are preserved in the state park.

Before lining up Napa, I spent a night at the superlative Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn. Exquisite and peaceful, and somewhat reminiscent of the Beverly Hills Hotel, this pastel pink resort, built in California Mission style, is an oasis of characterful calm.

First impressions count and the resort’s lobby is an eye-grabber with its high wood-beam ceilings, large central fireplace, snug chairs and sofas and unmistakeable sense of conviviality.

It’s a charismatic space you’ll want to linger in.

As you will in the resort’s pools, fed by thermal hot springs and complemented with a poolside café, bar and private cabanas available to rent, backed by the iconic water tower.

If you want to take your zenlike state of bliss to the next level, the award-winning Willow Stream Spa will tick all the boxes, a 40,000 square feet sanctuary boasting 30 treatment rooms.

The signature European Bathing Ritual includes an exfoliating shower, dips in mineral-water soaking pools, herbal steam, dry-salt sauna and a riveting rain tunnel.

So many wineries and so little time. Which way to go?

Vineyards everywhere – it just has to be Napa Valley.

Daily wine tastings take place in the lobby around 4.30pm, while you’ve got a spoil of vineyards in easy reach, whether you want to head out on a rental bike, or self-drive.

After a restorative sleep, swathed in crisp linens, I left the resort, pointing the car east to noble Napa.

You may recall the horrific scenes of those wild fires that monstered Napa and Sonoma last October. And you don’t have to look hard to notice the scars on the landscape.

Costing over 40 lives and severely damaging several dozen wineries, Wine Country has bounced back impressively well.

Surprisingly good Jack. I love driving the Silverado Trail, east of Napa town, clad in Silver Oaks and terraced vineyards, tumbling across the Tuscan-like terrain.

You’ll notice the scorched silver oaks in the higher elevations, above superb wineries like Signorello, Pine Ridge and Robert Sinskey. The Napa Valley is renowned for its majestic cabernets, fairy-tale chateaus and top-end culinary scene.

Robert Mondavi winery is a powerhouse, widely credited for stamping Napa on the wine world’s map.

They offer tours and tastings for every level of interest and expertise.

Bubbles? Domaine Chandon is well worth a visit, to marvel over their stellar Californian interpretation of method champenoise.

Further north in St. Helena, Charles Krug Winery is a stunning stop, founded in 1861, while Napa’s oldest continuously operating winery, Beringer, is still at the top of class.

The gorgeous chateau of Greystones is home to the West Coast branch of the Culinary Institute of America, if you want to savour some seriously posh nosh paired with local wines.

Two boutique wineries that enchanted me were V. Sattui winery, with its gorgeous Tuscan character and magnificent deli, while the award-winning Sutter Home family winery is situated right across the road.

Finally, Spring Mountain Winery is another inspired choice, but you do need to book in advance.

I am a chronic 80s’ tragic and Spring Mountain was the filming location of the hit soap opera, Falcon Crest. All the buildings are so recognisable; I was half expecting Angela Channing to enter the scene, swilling a muscular cabernet sauvignon.

Death toll climbs to 76 Heavy rainfall is hammering southern Japan for the third day, prompting new disaster warnings on Kyushu and Shikoku islands, as the government put the death toll at 48 with 28 others presumed dead.

Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said the whereabouts of 92 people are unknown, mostly in the southern area of Hiroshima prefecture.

More than 100 reports of casualties had been received, such as cars being swept away, he said. Some 40 helicopters were out on rescue missions.

“Rescue efforts are a battle with time,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters.

“The rescue teams are doing their utmost.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency said three hours of rainfall in one area in Kochi prefecture reached an accumulated 26.3cm, the highest since such records started in 1976.

The assessment of casualties has been difficult because of the widespread area affected by the rainfall, flooding and

landslides. Authorities warned landslides could strike even after rain subsides as the calamity shaped up to be potentially the worst in decades.

Kochi prefecture, on Shikoku, issued landslide warnings almost over the entire island. Public broadcaster NHK TV showed overturned cars on roads covered with mud. A convenience store worker, who had fled to a nearby rooftop, said water had reached as high as his head.

The Japanese government set up an emergency office, designed for crises such as major earthquakes.

A residential area in Okayama prefecture, on the main island of Honshu, was seeped in brown water spreading like a huge lake. Some people fled to rooftops and balconies and waved furiously at hovering rescue helicopters. Military paddle boats were also being used to take people to dry land.

en were injured, one of them seriously Six homes were destroyed, while nearly 500 were flooded. Evacuation orders or advisories were issued to more than 910,000 people, the prefecture said in a statement.

Kyodo news service reported several deaths in a landslide in Hiroshima and more bodies were retrieved from collapsed housing in the ancient capital of Kyoto, both areas where the rainfall was heavy in the past few days.

Throughout the hard hit areas, rivers swelled and parked cars sat in pools of water. Japan has sent troops, firefighters, police and other disaster relief. People have also taken to social media to plead for help.

In Ehime prefecture, a woman was found dead on the second floor of a home buried by a landslide, Kyodo said. Also in Ehime, two elementary schoolgirls and their mother who got sucked into a mudslide were pulled out but could not be revived, it said.

Policeman cleared of Novichok British authorities are conducting extensive forensic tests looking for the source of a nerve agent that sickened two people thought to have handled a contaminated item from the March attack on a Russian ex-spy and his daughter.

A police officer also underwent a precautionary test at a hospital to check for possible contamination related to the case, but Wiltshire Police said yesterday that he had been cleared.

The man and woman poisoned a week ago are in critical condition at Salisbury District Hospital, which is also where Sergei and Yulia Skripal spent months being treated after they were poisoned.

Authorities have said all four were sickened by Novichok, a nerve agent weapon developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Police think 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess and her partner, 45-yearold Charley Rowley, had secondary exposure to the chemical weapon used in the attack on the Skripals.

Police have said they are looking for a vial that may contain Novichok.

It is a slow and painstaking process as there is no easy way to use modern technology to pinpoint the location of the rare nerve agent.

Officials have said the search could take weeks or months.

It has brought more than 100 officers to Salisbury and the nearby town of Amesbury as suspect sites are condoned off to protect the public from possible contamination.

Prince to be baptised Bookmakers are predicting Prince William and Kate will choose friends over family as Prince Louis’ godparents.

Elvis Costello has revealed he is battling an aggressive form of cancer and has cancelled his European tour. The Londonborn musician, whose real name is Declan Patrick MacManus, has been advised to rest by his doctor following surgery for cancer, writes the Daily Mail. The 63-yearold released a statement saying that while he had returned to touring he now needed further rest. Costello added that he had a new record planned for later in the year as he urged other men to see medical advice if they had any worrying symptoms.

Boat sinking heartbreak Divers who entered the wreck of a tourist boat that sank in a storm off the Thai resort island of Phuket have described heartbreaking scenes of bodies of children found in the arms of their mothers.

The accounts came as the search continued for 15 mostly Chinese tourists missing in a disaster that has left dozens dead.

The death toll from the tragedy has climbed to 41, in Thailand’s biggest touristrelated disaster in years.

During a break in the search, diver Philip Entremont said: “It’s very difficult to see ... it’s traumatic, it’s tragic, but the best thing to do, our job as divers, is to bring back the bodies to their families.”

The boat, with 105 people including 93 tourists on board, capsized and sank after it was hit by 5m waves.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, leader of Thailand’s military government, expressed his “sympathies and deepest condolences” to the families of the dead.

He said the government will “exert all ef-

forts to find those still missing and provide support to all survivors of this tragic event”.

Reports in Thai media said police have charged the owner and captain of the stricken ship with carelessness causing death and injury.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for all-out search and rescue efforts, telling the ministry of foreign affairs and Chinese diplomats in Thailand to take greater measures, and also urging Thai authorities to spare no efforts.

Chinese ambassador Lyu Jian had an “emergency conversation” by phone with Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, the Chinese embassy said in a statement.

It quoted the envoy calling on Thailand to quickly mobilise an intensive search for the missing and “to tend and make appropriate arrangements for the rescued Chinese tourists, treat and cure the injured and receive family members of the Chinese tourists involved”.

Draw ‘a lucky escape’

Hampstead were held to a draw for only the second time this season in the Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition on Saturday.

The unbeaten competition leaders took on Geraldine and knew they’d be up against it, because Geraldine were the side that had come closest to defeating them this season.

It was the third time the two sides had played this year with the first game ending in a draw and the second a win to Hampstead.

Hampstead struck first on Saturday with a goal to Emma Mealings, but Geraldine got one back and the game ended in a 1-all draw.

Hampstead coach Rex Turnbull gave much of the credit for the draw to his side’s goalie, Kerry Chapman, who was named player of the day.

“Kerry had a blinder in the goal. She kept us in it to be fair,”

The competition takes a break

Hampstead/Collegians were also in action on Saturday, in Timaru, taking on last year’s champions Timaru Girls’ High School, and they came home with a 4-1 loss.

In the senior men’s competition, Wakanui didn’t have a game on Saturday.

They had the bye in the latest round, while the weekend’s other two games were both deferred to July 27 and July 29.

With no hockey this weekend due to school holidays, it means Wakanui won’t be back in action until July 21 when they take on Temuka in Ashburton.

Star ruckman Ben McEvoy could miss several weeks in a major blow to Hawthorn’s push for an AFL finals return. McEvoy was taken to hospital on Saturday night with a suspected cheekbone fracture and could need surgery. He was contesting a ground ball in the last quarter of the 63-point win over the Western Bulldogs when he had a head clash with opponent Josh Dunkley. McEvoy was high among the Hawks’ best before the incident and has enjoyed a strong season, with last week’s loss to GWS one of his few quiet games.

All Black boosts Rakaia

When Rakaia ran out on to the field to take on Methven in a Watters Cup clash on Saturday, a familiar famous face was wearing the number one jersey.

Crusaders and All Blacks prop Tim Perry took to the field in a rare appearance for his club side, as he continued along the road to recovery from a hamstring injury which ruled him out of the All Blacks’ recent series win over France last month.

Perry said it was the first time he’d turned out for Rakaia since 2014, when he played two or three games for the club, including that season’s Watters Cup final against Methven.

Things had changed a bit in that time and there were plenty of new faces within the Rakaia ranks who were no doubt excited to get the chance to play alongside the All Black, and Perry was happy with what he saw from his club, although he said they made it hard for themselves.

Rakaia came out on top 36-30 in a topsy-turvy game where they only held a slender one-point lead for the last few minutes, and Methven had chances to win it.

Perry lined up in the front row for the first 40 minutes, but left the field at half time with his side leading 26-20, and a cut to his nose to show for his efforts.

It was only the second time he’d taken to the field since injuring his hamstring in the first All Blacks camp of the winter, resulting in six weeks on the sideline.

Perry took to the field for the first time post-injury last weekend when he played for Tasman in a pre-season match against Counties, which they drew 26all, and eager to get his match fitness back up he then contacted Rakaia to see if he’d be able to play on Saturday.

Rakaia were more than happy to oblige.

Rakaia coach Terry Murray said they’d probably have let him play whatever position he wanted.

Laumape bags four The Hurricanes have returned to their winning ways in Super Rugby on the back of a four-try performance from Ngani Laumape against the Blues. Powerhouse inside centre Laumape proved too hot to handle in a 42-24 win in Wellington on Saturday which leaves his team close to clinching a home quarterfinal berth in the play-offs. The result ends a three-match losing streak for the Hurricanes, who scored six tries to three.

Stormers stun Sharks The Sharks’ Super Rugby playoff hopes suffered a blow when they were surprisingly beaten 27-16 by off-form Stormers at Newlands. The victory was a first in five games for the Cape Town-based side, who were missing skipper Siya Kolisi through illness and had rookie Josh Stander in the flyhalf position on Saturday. The Stormers outscored their opponents three tries to one in a tough, physical battle. The Sharks trail the eighth-placed Melbourne Rebels by three points, needing to defeat the Jaguares in their final game to stand a chance of making the quarter-finals. - RAW

“He came on Thursday night and trained with us and it was pretty cool that he came back to his foundation club and spent the week with us,” Murray said.

“He was just hoping that we would give him a run, so of course we are going to give him a run. “ We said ‘how long do you want, where do you want to play, and what is it you need to achieve?’

“We were prepared to let him play at first-five if he wanted to.”

The plan initially had been for him to play for 60 minutes, but after an injury to fellow Crusaders/All Blacks prop Joe Moody against the Highlanders on Fri-

day night, they changed it to 40.

“It was just fantastic for us.

“It was really good to have him at training and of course it makes everyone a bit nervous because you’ve got one of the best players in the world in your squad, but at the end of the day we just had to do our normal job,” Murray said.

Perry said it was good to be back on the field again and his troublesome hamstring had given him no trouble at all over the past two weeks.

He said you could do all the running in the world, but getting game-time under your belt was vital when you were returning from any injury, and he was hopeful he’d be back in the red

and black of the Crusaders soon.

“Hopefully I’ll get back in the big team next weekend, but we’ll see what happens,” Perry said.

That meant he was unlikely to be back in the blue of Rakaia again any time soon, so his team mates made the most of it, posing for a photo with the man they called “our All Black” after the game, which would no doubt take pride of place on their clubroom walls.

As well as posing for photos, Perry also took time out after the game to chat to some of his young fans, answering their questions and asking a few of his own which no doubt made the day of many youngsters.

Dan McKellar’s goal of getting his Brumbies playing Kiwi-style Super Rugby is almost complete. But it looks too late to rescue their play-off chances. A heartbreaking 24-19 loss to the Chiefs in Hamilton ended a three-match winning streak and has virtually snuffed out the Brumbies’ hopes of a sixth successive appearance in the finals.

Support for new system Opposing Super Rugby coaches Daryl Gibson and Tony Brown have joined All Blacks mentor Steve Hansen in suggesting administrators look at changing the rules so players are put on report rather than being sent off. Brown’s Sunwolves were reduced to 14 men just before halftime on Saturday, when Semesi Masirewa was sent off for a lifting tackle on Bernard Foley.

The Tahs routed the undermanned Sunwolves in the second half, scoring a 77-25 victory.

Rakaia leaves it late - again

A dominant second half saw Southern record a big victory over Hampstead, while Rakaia held on for a narrow win over Methven in Watters Cup rugby action on Saturday.

Rakaia – who had the services of Crusaders and All Blacks prop Tim Perry for the day – held a slender one-point advantage over Methven at the Methven Domain with time ticking away and sealed the 36-30 win with a last minute try to Andrew Veint.

Earlier on the warm and windy day for rugby, Rakaia had opened the scoring after just 90 seconds with an unconverted try to Matt Bentley.

But they didn’t hold the lead for long, with Methven centre Faaitu Tuamoheloa making a barnstorming run to fly across the line for his side’s opening try, which was converted by Reuben Early.

Rakaia soon struck back, with Seta Koroitamana bumping his way out of a couple of tackles and putting Tim Hanrahan in the clear to give Rakaia back the lead.

Two penalties put Methven back in front before they were reduced to 14 men after Tyler Blackburn was yellow carded for a late tackle on Rakaia winger Deon Biggs.

Rakaia made them pay with Harry Ashworth and then Biggs himself crossing for tries to take

them out to a 26-13 lead.

But as they did all game, Methven ensured they kept in touch thanks to a try to Charlie Suyker right before the break, to make it 26-20.

A chance to extend their lead went begging for Rakaia early in the second stanza, but when an opportunity arose for Methven, they grabbed it, with a try putting them back in the lead 27-26.

Biggs’ second try followed by another Methven penalty set up an intriguing final few minutes, with Rakaia just in front 31-30, although there was some confusion with the scoreboard and some people on the side-line having Methven ahead by two.

But it was in fact 31-30 to Rakaia, and Methven had two chances to hit the lead again but both penalty kicks went astray.

Rakaia’s Andrew Letham also missed a shot at an extra three points when the ball hit the upright, but from there Rakaia were down the right end of the field to close the game out, and they did, with halfback Veint crossing for a try on full time to claim the win and the Pat McGirr Memorial Trophy.

That final act of the game not only sealed Methven’s fate, but also resulted in a head knock to their captain James McLeod, adding to Methven’s already long list of walking wounded.

Methven had just 19 players heading into Saturday’s match

and had to call up Sam Grant, Chris Lock and John Fulton from the club’s B side.

Methven coach Andy Pearce said his side had a habit this season of capitulating in the last few minutes of games.

“I think we’ve lost four games in the last minute, and I think we are in double digits for losing within seven points,” Pearce said.

Rakaia coach Terry Murray said it was a nerve-wracking final couple of minutes.

While they had the score as 3130 to them, an assistant referee told them they were down.

“We were very nervous, so we got the word out to just put the hammer down and give it everything you’ve got,” Murray said.

It was the second time in two weeks Rakaia had scored a try in the final minute, with last week’s having been the winning of the game against Hampstead.

Hampstead were in Mayfield on Saturday still searching for their first win in Mid Canterbury Rugby’s showpiece in nine years and they were well in the hunt against top-of-the-table Southern at half time, leading 15-0 after 20 minutes, and 15-12 at half time.

But Southern ran riot in the second half, keeping Hampstead scoreless and winning 45-15.

Southern coach Andrew Carr said Hampstead tackled well in the first half, used their short

side well and put his side under immense pressure at times.

“Having said that, I think we defended well in this period, and all game,” Carr said.

“We played pretty well in the second half, with strong ball carrying from our forwards and good passing from the backs the gaps opened and Hampstead tired.

“Ryan Williams had a cracking game on the wing as did openside Alex Walker.”

Williams scored two of Southern’s tries with Adam Williamson, Aaron Chudleigh, Hamish McCulloch, Jon Dampney and Francis Doyle all crossed for one each, with Dalton Kannemeyer adding five conversions.

Hampstead coach Shaun Bovey described his side’s start as unbelievable.

A Toafa Touli penalty opened the scoring before Peter Milo and Elise Falealili crossed for tries.

“Myself and Craig (Dwyer, co-coach) looked at each other when we were 15-0 up and our biggest fear was that they (Southern) weren’t even starting to panic.

“They never thought for a second they were going to lose,” Bovey said.

“We still played relatively good, but the experience of those old heads at Southern just cranked up a gear.”

Celtic had the bye in round three.

brilliant football World Cup, improved further by clunky Russia’s quarter-final elimination, is Auckland rugby and league’s best friend for now.

This has been an exceptional World Cup tournament in Russia.

Of all the contenders, only Belgium would claim with certainty to be fielding their best-ever team.

But when it comes to goals, drama, stadium atmosphere, end-to-end action – in style, it has been a sort of Glasnost moment for the world tournament compared to more cynical predecessors. Exceptional players like Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne and Croatia’s Luka Modri exude a skilful joy for the game, even under intense pressure.

But Auckland’s footy failures will be back on centre stage soon, have no fear.

You don’t always have to be the best team to win a tournament, but quality or a lack of will be exposed in regular competitions.

The Blues and Warriors were crash landing under the radar this weekend while the Russian extravaganza provided the cover-up.

The Blues are in a pitiful state under Tana Umaga. Truly pitiful.

The Hurricanes wanted to rediscover their mojo on Saturday, and the Blues sent it via fast post, gift wrapped. The idea that Umaga can coach them for another season is beyond comprehension.

People say the problem is bigger than Umaga, and it may be, but I would strongly disagree with that inference as well. The sum of the parts in that squad is far greater than what Umaga has produced.

His team play without consistent belief, pattern, pride, cohesion ... or even being in their correct positions. Rieko Ioane is to second five-eighths what Vladimir Putin is to charity work. Ngani Laumape turned the world’s number one wing into a midfield fool by comparison.

The Warriors were no better and maybe even worse, their players apparently deluded into believing they only need to turn up to stay in the playoff dogfight.

How a team capable of playing this badly remains in the top eight with such a good buffer is an increasing NRL history mystery.

When faced with the best quality opponents this year, these Warriors have invariably given up.

Their lack of effort against Penrith was disgraceful.

Peta Hiku is a contender for worst NRL defender ever, and coach Stephen Kearney’s faith in him as a centre finally got what was coming on Friday.

Those shaking their heads at the limp displays will soon be shaking their fists.

What is it with Auckland football, a morass of disappointment and incompetence?

The Blues are almost beyond a joke, into a place where no one cares anymore. The Warriors – after a wonderful start in 2018 – are in danger of becoming a punching bag and punch line as well.- NZME

Methven still unbeaten

They’ve already got the Mainland Football men’s division two title in the bag, but there’s no taking the foot off the gas for Mid Canterbury United.

They took on Selwyn United FC Legends in Rolleston on Saturday and came away with a 4-3 win, making it 12 wins from 12 outings this season and a massive 63 goals for, and just 11 against.

Methven FC also kept their unbeaten record up in the Mainland Football men’s division four competition, with a 5-2 win over Papanui-Redwood AFC Panthers.

They’ve taken eight wins from nine games so far this season, with their other result being a draw, and are three points clear of the next team on the competition’s leaderboard, the Western AFC Generals.

Meanwhile in the youth grades, Mid Canterbury United’s 17th grade side picked up another draw in the Mainland Football 17th grade division one competition.

The 3-all draw with Coastal Spirit 17th A, their fourth draw in five games, with the other game having been a loss.

In the 15th grade division three competition, Mid Canterbury United’s 15th grade side also picked up a draw, 1-all with St Bede’s College Under-15 A. Mid Canterbury United are currently tied for third on the 15th grade division three table.

England in semis England achieved something David Beckham’s generation never managed: It reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored with headers in a 2-0 win over Sweden on Saturday, earning England’s youthful team a match against Croatia for a place in the final on July 15.

“We looked composed,” England captain Harry Kane said.

“We looked like we controlled the game.”

England’s fairly muted celebrations reflected the routine nature of the victory over a hard-working Swedish side that had already gone further than expected in its first major tournament without Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

England’s deep run also is a surprise.

Not even the England side containing stars like Beckham, Steven Gerrard and a young Wayne Rooney ever got this far at a major tournament.

The 1966 World Cup champions last reached the semifinals in 1990, losing the first of a series of haunting penalty shootouts. In 2014, the team didn’t even make it out of the group stage.

Yet the performances of Gareth Southgate’s squad – the second youngest at the tournament – are being celebrated wildly back home.

Even at Wimbledon, the home of lawn tennis, updates of England’s goals were spread by fans watching or listening to the match on their cell phones.

“I know the fans here are enjoying it,” Kane said.

“The fans at home, I’m sure we’ll see some videos tonight of them enjoying it.”

The chant of “On our way, on our way, to Moscow, on our way” came from England fans in one corner of the Samara Arena throughout the match, and the team’s march to the Russian capital is being fuelled by goals from set pieces.

There was another against Sweden, with

Maguire heading in a driven corner from Ashley Young in the 30th minute. It was England’s eighth set-piece goal of its 11 in Russia, and the center back’s first in international soccer.

The standard of England’s crossing has particularly stood out this tournament, and Alli added the second goal by meeting a far-post cross from midfielder Jesse Lingard with a powerful header in the 59th.

It proved to be a match too far for the Swedes, who advanced further than they ever did with Ibrahimovic – the team’s star for more than a decade – by being compact and hard to break down.

That helped them win a two-leg playoff against Italy to get to the World Cup, top a group containing Germany, and then beat Switzerland in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, although Russia made it further at this year’s World Cup than most anyone expected, it was Croatia that advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-3 shootout victory following a 2-2 draw.

The overachieving hosts, the lowest ranked team in the tournament at No. 70, were trying to make it to the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since the Soviet Union finished fourth at the 1966 tournament in England.

Even Russian President Vladimir Putin was taken in by the host nation’s surprising run, at least according to Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov.

“Putin called me during the day, and he called me right now,” Cherchesov said.

“He congratulated us on a very good game. He said what we showed on the field was great. I told him we were disappointed. He said we should have our eyes open and make the next steps.”

The Croats hadn’t advanced to the semifinals at the World Cup since 1998, when the country made its first appearance.

Croatia will next play England in the semifinals in Moscow.

Cyber future promising Tony Pike is keeping his stakes options open with Cyber Attack.

The Cambridge trainer will monitor the youngster’s progress and the weather before he decides which challenge he sets the in-form son of Shamexpress for.

“He might head to the Ryder Stakes and he could be a nice horse for the Wanganui Guineas,” Pike said.

“Obviously, the Ryder Stakes is at Awapuni and looking at the races there today the track is very deep and testing, which could be a concern.

“We could freshen him up and head to Wanganui.”

Cyber Attack has already excelled at black type level, having finished runner-up to the Melbourne-bound Peaceful in the Listed Futurity Stakes (1400m).

The youngster had no trouble going one better in Saturday’s Majestic Horse Floats 1200m at Te Rapa.

He raced on the leader’s quarters before taking control 250m from the post and dashed away to score by two and three-quarter lengths.

“He was very good today and getting more professional,” Pike said.

“He’s strengthening up and he gave a good kick at the 200m.

“He was dominant at the finish.”

Grant Dixon trained the three Group race winners and drove the most impressive of them, buzz colt Colt Thirty One, a breathtaking winner of the Group 3 Premiers’ Cup. It was the Victoria Derby winner’s 14 wins from as many starts at Albion Park. And it cemented him as the one to beat in the Queensland Derby. Amazingly, the son of Mach Three didn’t start favourite after a massive betting plunge on former Kiwi pacer Thatswhatisaid, who led as expected, but was beaten at the top of the home straight. - HRNZ

A bold hit-out at Thursday’s Waipa trials put a smile on trainer Andrew Campbell’s face after promising galloper Athletica made his longawaited return to the racetrack.

The good-looking Tavistock colt was one of a number of Campbell’s runners that were knocked around with a virus that went through the stable earlier in the year. At the time Campbell had the colt aimed at the New Zealand Derby however a lacklustre effort at Te Rapa in February saw him sent straight to the spelling paddock.

That enforced break appears to have worked the trick for Athletica who was all class in downing noted winter performer, Mr Luigi, in an open-class heat over 1150m at Waipa.

Cyber Attack has plenty of options after scoring a dominant victory at the Te Rapa meeting on Saturday.

Imported mare strikes for new owners Imported German racemare Igraine, who was bought as a future broodmare prospect for leading Waikato breeders Trelawney Stud, made a winning start to her local racing career when she won

over 1400m Te Rapa on Saturday.

A winner in Europe, the Galileo mare had impressed when defeating subsequent winner Padraig over 935m at the Cambridge trials back in May.

Given plenty of time to get over that effort, the Robert Priscotttrained runner displayed a fine turn of foot as she raced away to score comfortably by just over two lengths.

Trelawney Stud principal Brent Taylor was quick to congratulate local bloodstock agent Paul Moroney who had been responsible for sourcing the well-bred mare.

Tri-series in the water Blake Farr, a 14-year-old Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim team member, has been selected to compete in a Swimming Canterbury West Coast Tri-series.

The series got under way yesterday and finishes in Ashburton on Wednesday.

A total of 36 athletes were picked for their best performances since January and split into three teams to compete against each other over three days.

The young swimmers met at the Rolleston pool yesterday where they found out what team they would be in and from there they headed to Timaru for two days of racing, racing twice a day in individual events as well as relays.

They’d then head to Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre pool for another two sessions before finishing off back in Rolleston on Wednesday afternoon.

The tri-series tour was not focused on results as much as it was about improving skills and technique, with swimmers introduced to different training and racing environments as well as different coaching styles.

It was set to be a unique team racing environment where athletes were asked to operate outside of their usual racing events and strategies, with scoring points for their team and contributing to their team culture being the priority.

The tri-series swimmers will be at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre pool swimming on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

SVG rules at Townsville Shane Van Gisbergen secured a vital Supercars victory at Townsville yesterday as the Red Bull Holden Racing Team completed a dominant weekend.

After securing pole position earlier in the day, Van Gisbergen came out on top of a tussle with team-mate Jamie Whincup on the Reid Park circuit to claim his first win since the season opener at Adelaide in March.

A safety car with less than 10 laps remaining, after Michael Caruso’s Nissan was sent into a tyre barrier following contact with

Erebus rookie Anton de Pasquale, ended the race with a five-lap sprint but the Red Bull duo held off rival Scott McLaughlin to secure the result.

Victory means Van Gisbergen (1902 points) now trails championship leader McLaughlin (2033) by 131 points after the Ford star came home third.

That result was actually a good one for McLaughlin, who started the race seventh and fell back to 11th by the end of the opening lap.

The DJR Team Penske driver pitted early

to get some clear air, with the strategy helping him recover and end the day with a podium.

Whincup backed up his winning performance on Saturday by finishing second as the Red Bulls swept all before them on the north Queensland track.

Red Bull Holden Racing Team finished one-two in both of the weekend’s races with yesterday’s top two a reverse of Saturday’s finish.

Whincup now sits fourth on the championship ladder heading into the Ipswich

SuperSprint at Queensland Raceway later this month.
