The decision to run Environment Canterbury (ECan) with a mix of elected councillors and government appointed commissioners has Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay’s support.

Environment Minister Nick Smith announced the new governance model yesterday.

Following next year’s local government elections ECan will be run by six elected councillors and seven appointed commissioner. A chairperson will be chosen from the 13 members.

Under the mixed governance model the three provincial constituencies – North, Mid and South Canterbury will each have an elected councillor.

Christchurch will have four.

The Government appointed six commissioners to replace the elected councillors in 2010, frustrated with the failure to progress the Canterbury Freshwater Management Strategy, as part of a three-year plan. However, Mr Smith pushed out the timeframe to returning to democracy to accommodate earthquake recovery.

Yesterday he committed to returning ECan back to full democracy in 2019.

Mr McKay said he was “very comfortable with the arrangements for ECan’s governance”, in particular the special powers of appeals on points of law only for the Land and Water Plan.

“This will allow zone committees to make good collaborative committee decisions for their individual areas.

“I thought that if they had a majority of elected councillors they would have done away with that.

“It will allow the Ashburton and Pareora zone committees to go ahead with confidence.

“I believe it is a very good decision for the transition back to full democracy for Canterbury.”

There are no plans in the future for any amalgamation of any territorial authority in the Canterbury area.

ECan will undertake a representation review in the lead-up to the 2019 full democratic elections.

The four constituencies comprise north of the Waimakariri River to Kaikoura, Selwyn and Ashburton, south of the Rangitata River to the Waitaki River and Christchurch City.

The online streaming titan will debut Beasts of No Nation - the story of a boy abducted from his family to serve as a child soldier in Africa - on October 16. Written by award-winning Cary Fukunaga and starring British Golden Globe winner Elba, the film will be released globally on Netflix, and in select US theatres. Ads for L’Oreal moisturiser featuring actress Dame Helen Mirren have been cleared following a complaint that claimed post-production editing had enhanced her appearance. A TV commercial and a print ad came under the spotlight after a viewer complained to the British Advertising Standards Authority, believing that postproduction techniques had been used to alter lines around Dame Helen’s mouth. L’Oreal gave the ASA four images of Dame Helen at recent red carpet events when she had been professionally styled and made up, noting that the lines around her mouth were consistent in the ads and the red carpet photos. The cosmetics maker also provided a list of post-production techniques used in the print ad, none of which related to wrinkles on her face or neck, and confirmed that no post-production changes were made to Dame Helen’s face. The ASA said consumers would expect Dame Helen to have been professionally styled and made up for the photo shoot, and to have been photographed and filmed professionally in flattering conditions. It said the ads had not altered her appearance in a way that would exaggerate the likely effect of consumers’ use of the product, and concluded the ads were not misleading.

Goldblum father at 62 Jurassic Park and Independence Day star Jeff Goldblum has become a first-time father at the age of 62. The actor took to Facebook to share the happy news after his wife Emilie Livingston gave birth on Saturday. “We’re so excited to share the wonderful news of the birth of our son, Charlie Ocean Goldblum, born on the 4th of July. Woman invited to contact police

Kirsty Bentley murder inquiry detective Greg Murton wants the woman who has raised the possibility of changing her statement to contact him.

However, Mr Murton said it was unusual for someone to come out with such comments 17 years after the fact. He was surprised she had talked to the media before talking to police, and appeared sceptical the woman had any credible information to add.

He was referring to comments by an unnamed Christchurch woman this week.

The woman said she had always had concerns regarding her ex-partner’s involvement in the crime and would change her statement if asked the same questions today.

Following Kirsty’s murder in 1998 her ex-partner had his car sampled for DNA, and later said he left the area due to police harassing him.

“I don’t know who she is, I have told the reporter if she wants to make contact with us she’s welcome to, she has not made contact yet,” Mr Murton said yesterday.

He had an idea who the woman’s ex-partner may be, and if

it was that person, he had been thoroughly investigated at the time.

“That’s all I can say in relation to him,” Mr Murton said.

Meanwhile, Kirsty’s mother Jill Peachey has ruled out the possibility that any of Kirsty’s ashes will be scattered with her late father’s.

It was the dying wish of Sid Bentley, who was never eliminated as a suspect from the murder enquiry, to have his ashes scattered at Lyttelton with his daughter’s.

But the ashes are now in Ms Peachey’s possession as the sole living parent, after they were

held by Mr Bentley at his South Street home until he passed away last week.

“The ashes will remain as they are in the cylinder,” Ms Peachey said yesterday. She had no further comment to add.

Friends of Mr Bentley in Ashburton had hoped Ms Peachey, who lives in Invercargill, might return at least some of the ashes so they could be scattered with his.

“That’s what he wanted, that’s what he told me he wanted,” a friend who did not wish to be named said yesterday.

taking a more philosophical perspective.

At the end of the day to those who believed in god, “ashes are just ashes”, he said.

“It’s her choice now,” Mr Anderson said regarding Ms Peachey’s ownership of Kirsty’s ashes.

Mr Anderson understood Mr Bentley had personally requested a close unnamed friend of his, who was not a member of the church, to scatter the ashes, and the church had not had anything to do with it.

Mr Bentley’s ashes had not been at his memorial service at the church last week.

Baby dies from head injuries A homicide investigation has been launched after a 6-month-old baby girl died after sustaining head injuries in Wellington.

The baby was taken to Wellington Hospital from her Raumati Beach home at about 4.30pm on Monday after sustaining the “severe” head injury, said a statement from police. She died in hospital at 8.30pm on Tuesday night.

A man has appeared in Porirua District Court charged with two counts of assault after the death.

The 31-year-old man has been granted interim name suppression until Friday.

The man kept his head down for much of the appearance.

He was remanded in custody until Friday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson said police are talking to everyone who had contact with the baby prior to her admission to hospital.

Crowds witness historic sporting clash

Rugby fanatics converged on bars all over Mid Canterbury yesterday to witness a moment in history.

Around 70 people gathered at the Tinwald Tavern, supporting both the All Blacks and Manu Samoa.

Some cheeky Mid Cantabrians even skived off work for the occasion, sipping their cold beverages while still in their work clothes.

Others proudly showed their love for

their team – donning black or blue and white.

Tinwald Tavern complex general manager Trevor Whiting said he wasn’t surprised at the big turnout.

“We’re the only sports pub in Mid Canterbury,” he said.

“And it’s history, isn’t it.”

Local electrician Nick Brook and engineer Tyler Stuthridge secured themselves a prime spot at the tavern, right in front of the television.

Both had taken the afternoon off work

to watch the momentous match.

But there weren’t only locals taking in the atmosphere.

Andy Fraser and his mates were passing through town, having just been to Hanmer for an annual boys’ trip.

The group always rooted for the underdogs – some of them even cheered for Samoa - but all were All Black supporters at heart, he said.

Council to fund barrier arms

The Ashburton District Council will pay an estimated $110,000 to install barrier arms at the controversial Northpark rail crossing.

Yesterday marked one year since the death of 22-yearold George Ellis, who died in hospital a day after the truck he was driving collided with a train at the notorious crossing.

His death sparked a campaign to have barrier arms installed at the crossing, in a bid to prevent further tragedies.

KiwiRail initially committed to installing flashing lights and alarm bells at the crossing.

After the council made a case for barrier arms to be added to the mix, KiwiRail agreed and the project went to the NZTA for funding.

However, the NZTA would

not support the project and so it lay dormant until earlier this year.

Mr Ellis’ aunt, Chris Bristol, made an emotional pitch at the council’s long-term plan hearings for it to revisit the project.

They did just that, with mayor Angus McKay confirming that the council will fund the barrier arms.

The project is set to cost about $110,000, which will

come out of the council’s roading budget, he said.

Design work for the project has been completed and Mr McKay said it was now up to KiwiRail as to when the barrier arms were installed.

KiwiRail is in the process of finalising its schedule for when the work will begin, a spokesperson said. It is forecasting that work will be completed early in the new year, they said.

Spiders found in grapes The discovery of 10 poisonous spiders in bunches of imported grapes has prompted officials to pull all Mexican grapes from New Zealand shelves.

Five black widows were among the venomous arachnids discovered in a “small number of consignments” of Mexican table grapes, he Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said.

The spiders were found in several locations on both main islands.

“We have received 10 reports of spider detections - five are suspected black widows, one is a suspected brown widow, two are likely to be yellow sac spiders and a further two are as yet unidentified,” MPI surveillance manager Brendan Gould said.

In response, both of the country’s major supermarket chains had already withdrawn Mexican grapes from sale.

“The ministry has taken this action as a precautionary measure to ensure that any spiders that may have entered the country on Mexican grapes are identified and destroyed.”

Mr Gould said it was likely some grapes from the affected shipments had already been sold, so he warned people who had bought imported grapes to “be on the lookout”.

All the spiders so far discovered were poisonous, but MPI said they were not generally considered a serious danger to humans. However, their effects could be more serious for the very young or for people with a weakened immune system.

Supermarket owner Foodstuffs was alerted to the discovery of black widow spiders in Mexican red and black grapes on Friday.

Heavy woolly lambs made $117$129, medium weights $106-$115, and lighter lambs $72-$92. Heavy woolly ewes fetched $97-$102, medium weights $79-$93 and lighter lambs $69-$75. A small yarding of store lambs realised $60 up to $78.

Community facilitator Methven residents could be assisted in the future by a community facilitator. Methven Medical Centre doctor Gayle O’Duffy has discussed her ideas of such a role with Methven Community Board chairwoman Liz McMillan. Ms McMillan told the Methven Community Board this week that the role would be parttime and would be paid, and Dr O’Duffy was investigating funding.

The community facilitator could undertake work such as organising drivers for residents to get to medical appointments out of town and organising issues relating to people needing assistance such as those with mental health issues. Dr O’Duffy could not offer any further details following the meeting. She said it was not clear yet what form the role would take, and she was seeking planning assistance.

Contraceptive pill The contraceptive pill will not be available without a prescription in Mid Canterbury any time soon.

Pharmacy chain Green Cross Health previously proposed health officials change the rules to make the pill available overthe-counter at pharmacies. But Medsafe’s Medicines Classification Committee this week decided not to ease restrictions, noting there was no broad support from the medical community.

Lodge Erewhon has a newly appointed Master for an organisation boosted by immigration in support of the dairy industry.

Brian Reodique is the first Filipino person to take up such a role at a South Island lodge.

He was the first Filipino member of Lodge Erewhon when he joined in 2010.

Freemasonry was an important concept to him and to the Filipino community that supported the lodge, he said.

“We see how Freemasonry

works there (in the Philippines) at a grassroots level,” Mr Reodique said.

“You can see Freemasonry charities everywhere.”

Lodge secretary Noel Lowe said the lodge had benefited from the influx of dairy workers attracted to Mid Canterbury from the Philippines.

The lodge had 130 members in the 1970s but recently dropped to a low of 40.

Nineteen Filipino men had joined the lodge – boosting numbers and lowering the average age – and more were expected, Mr Lowe said.

Mr Reodique has been in the role for just over a month and already has some big ideas.

The protocols will stay the same but he said he wants to integrate community and charity at a grassroots level.

Mr Reodique is also keen to further incorporate families and family events, and has plans to have the lodge pair up with other organisations.

The lodge will participate in a blood donor session at the MSA today. Members of the public were also urged to attend.

A 15-month-old Christchurch child who died on Friday night was the victim of an “extremely violent assault or assaults”, police said yesterday. Ihaka Paora Braxton Stokes suffered multiple blunt force injuries including broken bones. Police and St John were called to the house at Truman Road, Bryndwr about 10.30pm on Friday. Ihaka was found unconscious with unexplained injuries. He was transported to the accident and emergency department at Christchurch Hospital and died shortly afterwards.

Teddy bears recalled Childrens product manufacturer phil&teds has recalled of all of its free teddy bears issued over the past five years and is ending the programme immediately. Parents of children with the bears, dubbed ‘phil&teddy’, were now being urged to throw the bears away. A phil&teds spokesperson said it had recently come to the company’s attention that the bear fuzz might come loose and/or the seam may split exposing the filing material.

The recall is being issued and the programme immediately ceased to avoid any potential risk children, he said.

Victims’ farewell on Saturday

The woman and three children who died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in Tinwald will be farewelled on Saturday.

Cindy George, 31, daughter Pio Raukete, 5, and sons Teuruaa George, 3, and Teiyzshwaun George, 2, were found dead in a Thomson Street property last Thursday.

Police believe they died from carbon monoxide poisoning after a car was left running in an adjacent garage.

Their deaths have now been referred to the Coroner.

There had been some confusion in the community as to the location of a funeral service but Paterson’s Funer-

al Services manager Barry Hayman yesterday confirmed a service will be held at the Sinclair Centre in Ashburton at 11am on Saturday.

That will be followed by a burial at the Ashburton New Lawn Cemetery.

Bishop Mora Pongia from Ashburton’s Church of the Latter-day Saints will conduct Saturday’s service.

The tragedy was very tough on Mid Canterbury’s Pacific Island community, but they were banding together to support Ms George’s family, he said.

Ms George and her children were a “wonderful family”, Bishop Pongia said.

“She was just a wonderful woman, the way she looked after those children,” he said.

The funeral service would be emotional and “very tough”.

A cousin of Ms George, who asked not to be named, said she expected between 300 and 400 people would attend Saturday’s service.

“The community here in Ashburton just wants to be a part of it,” she said.

The extended family was “very grateful” for the support from the police and community, she said.

“The response from the community is very generous.”

The family was heartbroken but they was trying to be positive and stay strong for each other. They needed time to grieve and be with loved ones, she said.

It’s still not sinking in,” she said.

Film competition challenges bullying Cold

Budding Mid Canterbury moviemakers like Madison and Millie Scott will have the chance to show off their skills and take a novel approach to tackle bullying.

Safer Ashburton’s anti-bullying project Think First is running a film competition this month, which is open to everyone up to the age of 19.

The competition challenges people to make a short film on the theme of becoming a superhero by speaking out against bullying.

Entries should be no longer than four minutes long and must be received by July 31.

The public will then be able to check out the films on Youtube, with the winning entry decided by both a panel of judges and by the number of views it receives.

The winner will take home a GoPro camera.

Shaming illegal parkers ‘right way to go’ By susan sanDys

Shaming on Facebook is the right way for Methven to deal with illegal parking, a senior Ashburton District Council manager suggests.

At a Methven Community Board meeting this week, council community relations manager Vincie Billante told members that the town seemed to be dealing with the issue the right way.

Her comments were in response to a query from board chairwoman Liz McMillan as to what more the community could do to stop people parking in a disabled parking spot on McDonald Street, outside Methven Primary School and Mount Hutt College.

“There have been lots of grumbles from people regarding cars parking in the disabled spot,” Ms McMillan said.

“People are starting to name

and shame on Facebook, putting photos of cars up,” she added.

Ms McMillan wondered what the board or council might be able to do, and suggested changing the angle of the disabled parking sign at the spot.

Ms Billante believed motorists knew it was a disabled spot, but were ignoring the rules regardless.

She believed the community was taking care of the issue on

its own accord by sharing images of illegal parkers on social media.

Following the meeting Ms McMillan said she was not sure what the solution was, but nevertheless had reservations about the naming-and-shaming approach.

“In a small town it can almost be a bit malicious, not that it’s intended to be,” Ms McMillan said.

Temperatures plunged as low as minus 30 degrees, when wind chill was taken into account, at Mt Hutt yesterday.

It was so cold that ski area management closed the Summit Six ski lift early, at about 3pm.

Manager James McKenzie said temperatures were minus 14 degrees in clear sunlight at the summit at the start of the day, making it among some of the coldest days ever on the mountain.

Temperatures remained below zero, and strong winds at the summit meant the Summit Six chairlift had to be slowed down.

Then it was decided that the temperatures were too low to have people on the chairlift at the slower speed, so it was closed for the day.

In brief Fewer soldiers The US Army is to cut 40,000 soldiers from its ranks over the next two years, in a move that will raise doubts about its ability to fight wars. Under the cost-cutting plan, the army will be down to 450,000 soldiers at the end of the 2017 budget year, USA Today said. That’s despite it arguing in budgetary documents in 2013 that going below 450,000 troops might mean it could not win a war, the newspaper said. By comparison, the army swelled to 570,000 men and women during the peak of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, the paper said. Some 17,000 civilians working for the army will also be laid off, a defence official said.

By James PheBy Britons have laid flowers at the sites of the 2005 London suicide bombings and held a nationwide minute of silence for the 52 victims on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday led the tributes by placing a wreath at a memorial in Hyde Park and petals were released from the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral during a service there.

The Hyde Park ceremony began at exactly 8.50am local time - the time the first of four homegrown jihadists detonated his device on London’s transport system on July 7, 2005.

“It’s still raw 10 years on,”

said Mark, a 40-year-old train driver fighting back tears on the plaza outside King’s Cross train station, near two of the four blast scenes.

“You see things you don’t want to see again,” he said, adding that he was on duty at the time and was involved in rescue operations.

Bouquets of flowers were laid in nearby Tavistock Square, on the spot where one of the bombers detonated his device on a red double-decker bus, killing 13 people.

“Our precious daughter Shyanu. When heaven took our angel back, they left two broken hearts,” read one message left in memory of 30-year-old Shayanuja Parathasangary.

At Russell Square Underground station where a second device was detonated on a train, a tent was erected near the station entrance where mourners could sit and pay a silent tribute.

Spectators at the Wimbledon tennis tournament joined in the minute of silence, as did tourists outside St Paul’s where families of the victims and survivors had gathered.

“Ten years on from the 7/7 London attacks, the threat from terrorism continues to be as real as it is deadly,” Cameron said.

“The murder of 30 innocent Britons whilst holidaying in Tunisia is a brutal reminder of that fact. But we will never be

cowed by terrorism.”

The Britons were among 38 people killed when a gunman went on the rampage at a popular Tunisian beach resort on June 26, Britain’s worst terror incident since the 2005 bombings.

Prince William joined the ceremony in Hyde Park where several survivors spoke of their experiences.

Emma Craig, 24, was just a schoolgirl on one of the trains targeted as she made her way to a work experience program.

“All of us lost our innocence on that day,” she said.

“It might not have broken London but it broke some of us.”

Greece given Sunday debt deal deadline European leaders have given debt-stricken Greece a final deadline of Sunday to reach a new bailout deal and avoid crashing out of the euro, after Greek voters rejected international creditors’ plans in a weekend referendum.

In the first step of its renewed bid for funding, Greece’s leftist government must submit detailed reform plans by Thursday, EU President Donald Tusk said after eurozone leaders held an emergency summit with Greek Prime Minister Alexis

Tsipras. All 28 European Union leaders will then examine the plans on Sunday in a makeor-break summit that will either save Greece’s moribund economy or leave it to its fate.

“Tonight I have to say loud and clear - the final deadline ends this week,” Tusk told a news conference.

“Inability to find an agreement may lead to bankruptcy of Greece and insolvency of its banking system,” he added.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Junck-

er warned “we have a Grexit scenario prepared in detail” if Greece failed to reach a deal, although he insisted he wanted Athens to stay in the euro club.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel meanwhile warned Greece would need a debt program lasting “several years” and insisted writing off any of Greece’s 320 billion euros ($A472 billion) debt mountain was out of the question.

The deadline came after Tsipras and his new finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos

came to Brussels to discuss the fall-out from the dramatic referendum.

Greeks voted by 61 per cent to reject creditor demands for more austerity in return fresh EU-IMF bailout funds.

Tsipras says Greece is ready to make “efforts” to reach a “viable” deal that will guarantee an end to the debt crisis.

He is due to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday where he may set out further details of Greece’s plans.

A supersonic F-16 fighter has collided with a small Cessna trainer over the US state of South Carolina, killing both people in the Cessna. The mid-air collision occurred about 20km north of Charleston, spreading debris over a wide area, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The US Air Force identified the F-16 pilot as Major Aaron Johnson, based at Shaw Air Force Base in the centre of the southern American state.

Local media said Johnson - an F-16 pilot since 2005 - was alert and walking after ejecting from his fighter.

Nigeria suicide blast At least 25 people, including a two-year-old child, have been killed in a bomb blast which ripped through a government office in northern Nigeria. The bombing is a suspected suicide attack, likely to be blamed on the Boko Haram Islamist group. The explosion occurred in the town of Zaria as primary-school teachers and public-sector workers were queueing for identity checks, according to witnesses.

Tube strike Britain’s capital is bracing for travel chaos with a planned 24-hour London Underground strike. Almost 20,000 staff of the rail network known as the Tube, belonging to four different unions, are due to leave their posts in a dispute over pay and plans to run an all-night service on weekends from September. The walkout is set to cause chaos for millions of travellers and bring the world’s oldest subway system to a halt.

Transport for London says there’ll be “no Tube service at all on Thursday”, with the disruption expected to continue into Friday.

‘Safe selfie’ guide Russian police have launched a campaign urging people to take safer selfies after around 100 were injured and dozens died this year in gruesome accidents while striking high-risk poses. “A cool selfie could cost you your life,” the interior ministry warned in a new leaflet packed with tips such as “a selfie with a weapon kills”. That warning comes after a 21-year-old woman in Moscow accidentally shot herself in the head in May while taking a selfie while holding a pistol.

Lingering legacy of a day of terror Stu Oldham

he woman in the unusually empty bus was shocked but unbowed.

The Islamist terrorists might have wanted to scare London, she said, but her adoptive, cosmopolitan city would never surrender to fear.

The cleaner was on her way to her late-night job somewhere in the city. In a thick eastern European accent, she said Londoners would disappoint the bombers: they would respond by getting on with life.

Earlier that day, I was being driven between Heathrow and Islington when the three bombs were detonated in commuter trains travelling the underground. Reports of electrical faults became reports of bombs.

The traffic slowed and people rushed along footpaths to tube stations. Near Edgeware Road station, tearful people searched for friends and yelled, frustrated, into out-of-service mobile phones.

My friend, the driver of the car, flew into a fit of fear when the radio revealed one of the explosions was on the line used by his wife-to-be. It took another hour to learn she took an earlier train.

He stayed closed to his fiancée that night when I left to ride one of the first buses released for service after the emergency, city-wide shut down. He avoided trains for many days after.

The cleaner I met on the late night bus became part of a news story in New Zealand, where people were slowly realising the post-September 11 terror threat knew no boundaries.

Here, as in the United Kingdom, the response was immediate and consistent. Security and surveillance laws were strengthened as freedom and privacy gave way to collective security.

Yesterday, thousands of Londoners attended services remembering the 52 people killed and the more than 700 injured when bombs were detonated on trains and a bus 10 years ago.

London got on with life but there and in New Zealand, 7/7’s legacy was life trying to lose terror’s shadow.

I often visit that store in Riccarton, and it is good to see so many people limiting their bags or using their own reusable ones.

He gives the impression that all forms of payment [for council services] are available but there is no mention of internet banking. I went to the council’s

website to register the dog and find that I can only do it online if I agree to a raft of conditions (that I can’t be bothered reading) and use either a Visa or Mastercard credit card. I only use three forms of payment; Internet Banking, EFTPOS or cash so I will have to call in to the council offices for the dog registration.

Perhaps Mr Dalziel could consider printing the council’s bank account number on all accounts and I could then use internet banking as I do with virtually every other business that I deal with. It’s a simple, easy, form of payment that keeps me in control, unlike using direct debit where I hand control to the other party.

ere’s one for you – should teachers have holidays during the school holidays? For once I’m not actually going to give my opinion on this one, but I do want to provoke discussion.

Currently a Board of Trustees can ask its teachers to work on school matters for up to 10 days per year, outside of when the school is open for instruction. That is equivalent to two weeks. Schools are basically open 40 weeks of the year.

So in theory teachers could work 42 weeks of the year and still have another 10 weeks on holiday.

Ahh, I can hear the orchestra of dissent striking up their bows as teachers cry out – “but we work during our holidays!”

Yes, I know you do, but you can set when you work during those holidays, how much you do, and make it fit around other plans. Your work is carried out on taxpayer funded laptops and if your taxpayer funded heat pump doesn’t make your room a comfortable temperature, you can choose to go home.

So why would I want to provoke the very profession I believe in, and whom I would not succeed as a principal if it wasn’t for their many hours of work, carried out during weekends and holidays? The answer is in order to meet curriculum requirements, assessment requirements, and the individual student learning needs, we need more time in the day.

We also need the time to be upskilled to meet the demands brought on by changes to education policy. The problem is we don’t have it during a standard teaching term.

At the moment primary teachers are being asked by their union to put forward their requests for the negotiating team to take to the government. I’m a principal so my ideas aren’t considered, however some journo thought it would be a good idea to let me write random comments in a

See, I think there is an opportunity for teachers to bargain for the provision of quality professional development and inter-school collaboration during the holidays. The professional development is the up-skilling, the collaboration is the sharing of ideas to meet classroom demands.

Why I say holidays is because then teachers are free of interruptions, meetings, and tiredness after spending all day in the classroom.

What is the benefit to a teacher of on-going quality professional development and dialogue with other teachers?

Actually the question is, can we afford not to provide opportunities for our teachers to upskill?

Skilled and highly trained teachers will manage classroom demands better. They will make sound decisions for the benefit of their students. They will grow personally and be in a better place to reflect on their own practice. They will be appreciated more by parents for their ability to tailor curricu-

lum for the needs of children.

This current government amended the Education Act in 2014 to establish the new Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand as the new professional body to lead and promote quality teaching.

(Education Amendment Bill (No 2) 10 March 2014). So the government wants our teaching workforce to be a quality one – do our teachers want to be one?

I’m actually surprised that as a workforce our teachers haven’t demanded quality professional development as an essential component of their collective agreements. Currently there not a single provision in the primary teachers’ collective agreement that binds the employer to provide ongoing training. I find that rather strange.

Actually our national curriculum has part of its vision statement “life-long learners”. It has a vision that children will be set up by our schools to continue learning long after the have left formal education. There is an irony in the fact we want our children to be life-long learn-

ers but the teachers who are to create this passion for learning, are under no obligation to do likewise.

So to the teachers who have now decided to never apply for a job at Tinwald because I have provoked the very idea of touching your sacred holidays – good, please don’t. I have just finished three days of intensive professional dialogue with the current teachers of Tinwald School during their holidays.

I am stoked that they committed to writing and reviewing curriculum, and learning about how to evaluate their own practice, because they know it makes them a better teacher in the classroom.

Crikey, that was heavy – now I need a holiday from my opinion.

Fonterra is Norgate’s legacy

Ponsonby landmark up for sale

The late Craig Norgate’s greatest legacy is his leadership of Fonterra during its formation, according to the milk co-operative’s first chairman, John Roadley.

The former Mid Canterbury dairy farmer worked closely with Mr Norgate during Fonterra’s formative years and said he was a visionary who had an ability to see solutions to problems before anyone understood there was a problem in the first place.

Just 36 years old when he took the helm, Mr Norgate had the “extremely challenging” task of bringing two “fiercely independent and strong” milk co-operatives, Kiwi Dairy and New Zealand Dairy Group, together in 2001, Mr Roadley said.

“It was Craig’s job to get everyone playing on the same pitch and pushing at the same side of the scrum.

“It was no small job. I would say to him ‘are you sure you’re ready for this Craig’ but he never doubted for a minute that he couldn’t.”

Mr Norgate’s role in the first two years of Fonterra was important for the dairy industry and hugely important for New Zealand, Mr Roadley said.

His mental capacity had to be seen to be believed, he said.

“It never ceased to amaze me how quickly he could sum up and act on meetings that would last for hours.”

A rural Kiwi boy at heart, Mr Norgate didn’t know the meaning of the word can’t and kept driving for what was right, he said.

“He upset some people along the way, but that never worried him.”

After Fonterra, Mr Norgate was head of PGG Wrightson for six years before becoming the chief executive of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2012.

Contract signed for Town Hall repair

BY KURT BAYER The decision to repair Christchurch’s earthquakedamaged Town Hall “stacks up financially and emotionally”, Mayor Lianne Dalziel said yesterday as she stood inside the landmark building she first attended as schoolgirl.

Christchurch City Council have voted to spend $127 million restoring the heritagelisted building on the banks of the river Avon in downtown Christchurch.

Yesterday, a blessing and contract signing between the council and contractors Hawkins Construction was held in the dusty foyer of the 43-yearold building which has been closed since suffering damage in the ferocious shaking of the deadly February 22, 2011 tremor.

Ms Dalziel told of attending the official opening of the Sir Miles Warren-designed building in 1972 as a 12-year-old where she “marvelled at this incredible building”.

Up until the earthquakes, it was where “we have come as a city to celebrate things”, she said.

It was important for the rebuilding city to have a place for civic occasions “which is our place”, the mayor said.

Most of the building’s damage was caused by liquefaction and lateral spreading of the ground towards the Avon River. It dropped 300mm in some areas and up to 600mm in others.

A number of options for the future of the Town Hall were considered, including partial restoration or building a new facility.

The recommendation to fully restore was based on a business case carried out by Deloittes that identified it was the most financially viable option that would also provide the fitfor-purpose civic, cultural and performing arts facilities a city the size of Christchurch needs.

It will be rebuilt to 100 per cent of the new building standard, and include upgraded lighting and audio systems, and a new cafe.

Steve Taw of Hawkins said it would be a challenging project, adding that “heritage projects always are”.

But he said its restoration formed a major part of the city’s rebuild as the building was “an iconic piece of Christchurch infrastructure”.

The main auditorium has already been stripped back, with carpets torn up to reveal a cracked and sloping concrete floor.

One of these, Takapuna’s former fire station, has just sold for nearly $15 million to a company with an interest in the rest home business.

The Ponsonby Post Office at 1 St Marys Road is listed for sale with a CV of $4.7 million but changed hands in 2013 for $4.86 million.

The 651sq m character building is linked to the 1920 murder of Ponsonby’s postmaster Augustus Edward Braithwaite.

Dennis Gunn, 25, murdered Braithwaite in his home, took his keys and ransacked the Post Office strongroom. He was identified by fingerprint evidence on cash boxes and a recently fired revolver.

It was the first time in the British Empire that the prosecution sought a conviction for a capital crime based almost entirely on fingerprint evidence.

Gunn was found guilty at the Auckland Supreme Court two months later and hanged.

The building has been home to the Belgian Beer Cafe and the Skin Institute. QV records list the current owners as David Hough and Katrina Glazebrook.

It is being pitched as an opportunity for hospitality operators, investors and developers _ with the potential to run a restaurant and bar or build highspec residential apartments offering views of the city and harbour.

The property has a historic listing preventing alteration to the exterior, but the interior could be converted.

Harcourts agent Tim Turner said there had been solid interest.

“The market is rewarding owners of heritage buildings who are innovative in their conversions - market conditions make it a good time to add value to existing structures.”

The listing follows the sales of several other historic Auckland properties as the city’s rampant property market continues its unabated surge.

The former Takapuna fire station has just gone unconditional after selling for $14.3 million to McConnell Clearmont Limited Partnership, according to QV. The company is also the registered owner of Jervois Private Hospital and Rest Home in Herne Bay. - NZME

Collecting big data with drones Farm plans d

Technology and big data is changing the face of agriculture in Mid Canterbury and a Hinds man is at the cutting edge.

Tony Allan has set up Terrain Flight NZ, a company specialising in infrared crop imaging using drone technology.

Mr Allan has been tinkering with the Swiss-developed software since March.

The senseFly eBee Ag drone weighs a mere 700gms and has a wingspan of 96cm.

An onboard infrared camera picks up the infrared reflectants in plants, measuring the amount of chlorophyll present – which is an indicator of plant health.

When the captured information is downloaded onto a computer, it generates a 3D image of the crop which can be downloaded into any precision agriculture program as a shape map.

“Farmers can then apply spray or fertilise the crop in the specific areas it is required rather than covering the entire paddock,” Mr Allan said.

The device can also provide simpler onsite information pointing to obvious problem areas in a crop using RGB (red, blue, green) camera.

“If anything shows up we can walk out and see what’s going on,” Mr Allan said.

“But I don’t act as a consultant, I just gather the information.”

The head scratching and grumbling at a computer screen is over for many farmers in the Barrhill/Chertsey (BCI) and Acton irrigation schemes who are completing their Farm Environment Plans as the deadline looms for submission.

Although many farmers were initially unhappy at having to prepare nutrient budgets and Farm Environment Plans (FEPs), Irrigo Centre environmental manager Eva Harris said the scheme was on track to get all completed by the August 15 cut-off date.

Under ECan’s proposed Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan, all farmers in a red zone with more than 20/kg/ ha/year nitrogen leaching can continue to operate until January 1, 2017 but after that date a resource consent would be required along with a completed FEP. However, the BCI and Acton schemes must ensure their shareholders complete plans earlier in order to renew their current consent.

The drone, thought to be one of only two in the country, cannot fly above 120m or be used within 4km of any airport.

Federated Farmers is urging Mid Canterbury farmers to honour their grazing contact commitments this season.

In an open letter to members yesterday, Mid Canterbury grain and seed chairman Jo Bourke and dairy chairman Jessie ChanDorman advised farmers to communicate at all times with graziers if they were unable to make payments as scheduled.

“We are in a cyclical low point of commodity prices and we will get through this tough spot as long as we all watch out for each other.”

Great effort from cross-country stars On June 10 approximately, 43 students went to the Halswell Quarry to compete in the Inter Intermediate Cross-country.

The school sent five teams – Year 7 boys, Year 7 girls, Year 8 boys, Year 8 girls and a team for athletes with disability.

Everyone competed very well with Caleb Ward being the outstanding runner coming 8th in the Year 7 boys’ section. On June 24 he competed at the Roto Kohatu Reserve for the Inter Regional Cross-country and got 19th place. Well done Caleb – a tremendous effort.

The team for athletes with disability also did very well.

Delta was first in the physical category, Jacob was first in the visual category and Lachie finished second in the boy’s open.

Well done to everyone for partaking and representing our school.

Music festival outing

Music Festival was held recently at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre with approximately 110 students from our school in both choirs. Our Intermediate Choir 1 performed on Tuesday June 16 but unfortunately due to the inclement weather the performance on Thursday night by our Intermediate Choir 2 had to be postponed and is to be rescheduled during Term 3.

Our special choir members performed each night.

The standard of the performances was tremendous.

Thank you to Barbara Thomas and Debbie Hawkes and our performance teacher Ms Cooney for all their hard work.

Inspiration for our young leaders On Tuesday May 12, our Deputy Principal, Mrs Jemmett, took our School Leaders to a Young Leaders’ Day in Christchurch. There are some of their thoughts on the guest speakers: I really enjoyed the Young Leaders Day because of all the inspiring speakers. My favourite speaker was Steven Gurney.

He said he was always the last picked for games and came last in school events. Now he has won the Coast to Coast nine times in a row! I found the speakers to be very empowering and they all seemed to be very happy with their lives.

Chris Jupp said that when he was at school he got bullied so he bullied other people himself which he wasn’t proud of. Now he is a superhero in the 40 hour famine. Some very inspiring words Chris said were: “We can all change the world”.

During the gap we had between each speaker, we sometimes played games. One of the coolest games was when the hosts chose two people from the audience and they went up on stage. What they didn’t know was that they were going to play Egg Roulette!

There were eight boiled eggs and four raw eggs. They had to take turns to smash the eggs against their faces. The first person to get two raw eggs lost!

Another game was when each side had one massive ball each and they had to get it from the front to the back, then back to the front first.

I loved the entire day and would do it again.

Chloe William Pike and his best friend James both wanted to be teachers so they went to Teachers’ College. In the holidays they liked to go on adventures but one holiday adventure would change William’s life forever.

William and James were climbing Mt Ruapehu and when they got to the summit they couldn’t see the hut so they looked down and they were standing on it! At 1.00am William heard a small rumble and all of a sudden Mt Ruapehu exploded. William got

hit with two big rocks and then got stuck by snow and mud.

James quickly scampered down the mountain and got help. William was stuck in the hut for five hours. When help got to him he was unconscious and had a temperature of 25°. At hospital he had to get his right leg amputated and to close his leg they used 78 staples.

Some of the inspirational words William told us were: Courage, Teamwork, Resilience, Compassion, Pride, Enthusiasm.

My favourite quote of his was: “All passion. No limits.”

Isaac The final speaker of the day was Dr Sam Hazledine, founder of MedRecruit, a business aimed at finding doctors and nurses a career in medicine. He founded this business with his wife after realizing that a quarter of medical graduates were leaving New Zealand clinics three years after

graduation. He is also a Sir Peter Blake Trust Leader.

Dr Sam Hazledine shared many pieces of advice with us including quotes from Theodore Roosevelt, Anthony Robbins, and someone else (unknown).

He taught us the three foundations for success: hunger, sacrifice and if it’s hard, do it. Here are some of his key notes: Live outside your comfort zone Anything’s possible Success lies at the intersection of mind-set and action We can’t control the height of the mountain but we can control if we put one foot after the other If you fall down, get back up Leadership is going first and being prepared to fail Failure is inevitable, defeat is optional It’s your life - the stakes are high The best decision is correct, second best is wrong and the worst decision is nothing at all

Choose what you want to do, not what everybody else wants you to do within reason except if that’s what you want He also asked us three questions: What do you want to experience?

History repeats . . .

C

all me old fashioned, which is probably better than some of the things I may have been called, but I still think despite all the information we can source and read on the net, nothing beats books.

That’s not to say the net isn’t a fascinating and wonderful source of information.

Books of course come in all shapes and sizes, and cover all sorts of topics.

Some books get picked up and hardly put down again until they have been fully read.

Others are great to have on hand for browsing.

A lovely little book I was given earlier in the year definitely falls into that category.

I’ve mentioned previously that Barbara McIntosh on behalf of her brother-in-law Michael Satchell kindly passed on The Observer’s Book of Motoring to me.

Since receiving the book it’s been a continuing source of pleasure as I pick it up from time and enjoy browsing through it.

Published in 1955 and written

by Richard Parsons, with a forward by Stirling (later Sir Stirling) Moss the book describes 107 vehicle makes and features numerous photographs, drawings and sketches.

The book begins with a brief

history of the automobile which records that the ancestry of the car can be traced back to 1770, when Nicholas Cugnot built a steam carriage seating four passengers which could travel at the whopping speed of two-and-a-quarter miles per hour.

In time steam gave way to petrol as the motive power for cars, although for some time both forms of power overlapped, just as is happening today as we see more use of diesel and hybrid engines.

The brief history concludes with reference to trials being done by some car manufacturers with turbine engines in the early 1950s.

By then it had been recognised that for various reason petrol may not be the fuel of the future.

The history section of the book ends with these partly prophetic words – “with further research and experi-

menting we may see a world populated with turbine cars and the petrol engine may recede into history as the steam engine did before it”.

The great little book then goes on to explain how cars work, and includes notes on the changing shape of the automobile.

Both these sections are extremely interesting, and it’s particularly fascinating to read about the design changes, some obviously influenced by the fashions of the day, and others by technological advances which occurred up until the year in which the book was published.

There have of course been many amazing design changes since then, but it soon becomes clear that these have been achieved by taking the ideas of those forward thinking early motoring pioneers to another level.

This is certainly evident from the illustrations.

the makers featured are no longer making cars many are, and by looking closely it’s obvious from many of the illustrations that the design of some modern cars is closely related to classic designs from times past.

And I guess this is one of the delightful aspects of this little book.

It provides a reminder of the old adage that “sometimes the more things change the more they are the same”.

The book also confirms the saying “good things can come in small packages”.

So far this delightful little book has provided a mass of good reading, great historical information and much pleasure.

And I know it is going to continue to do so for a long time to come, so I am very grateful to Barbara and Michael for passing it on.

hen our friend Steve Gielingh, who owns an immaculate Series Two Landrover, saw the Observer’s Book Of Automobiles he was delighted to see it features an illustration of that model along with an accurate description of the vehicle.

Naturally Steve is quick to extol the many features which make Landrovers such special vehicles, including a quirky one.

Apparently the radiator grill not only serves the purpose it is intended very well but many Landrover owners have used it for another purpose too – removed from the body the grill makes an idea grill on a barbecue!

Something which no doubt many enthusiasts have found very useful while exploring remotes places in their Landrovers.

They cover a variety of topics including hobbies, art, history and wildlife.

The aim of these books was to interest the observer and they have been popular amongst all age groups.

One hundred titles have been produced with the Observer’s Book Of Automobiles being the twenty first in the series.

t would be easy to think a function taking place in the Sinclair Centre on the afternoon of Sunday 16 August 2015 has nothing to do with motoring.

But there is at least a small connection.

The function is a version of the popular old favourite “It’s In the Bag”.

It will be a fun afternoon and the person compeering it has a bit to do with the local motoring scene so in his capacity as quiz master he may ask contestants some car questions. And chances are those contestants will have travelled to get there by car and will drive home with a prize.

Ashburton Cavendish Club Arts and Craft Circle Friday May 29 Ashburton Arts and Craft Circle Gust Speaker Nicola Bota owner of the Ashfords Art & Craft Knitcola.

A great turn out of members to the Arts and Craft Circle. Nicola gave us an enthusiastic and informative account of the wool and other natural yarns industry from the sheeps back to the knitting needles. The most popular wools and fibres are merino, possum, alpaca and silk.

Lots of colours, textures, weights and many uses. Nicola brought along some of her samples, scarves, baby wear and children’s wear, lots of lovely colours and designs.

Nicola was presented with a gift and a vote of thanks.

Garden Circle Convenor Sandra Grant recently welcomed a large number of members to hear Nichola, who owns “The Company Shed” at Tai Tapu, speak about her beautiful quality garden ware and gifts, which she both makes, imports and then sells.

She brought with her a feast of different products from watering cans painted different colours, to cards and mugs with garden scenes on them. A beautiful array of gifts which many of our members brought to pop away for those needed presents.

It was a very interesting afternoon, which everyone enjoyed greatly.

Drama Circle Members of the Cavendish Club were entertained by the Drama Circle on Friday.

Nice to see a good attendance of members for our Circle. Several humorous readings read by Noeline, Pamela, Joan and Betty.

The sketch entitled “Charlie is my Darling” was read by Jean and Judith.

Both become so confused when talking to each other on the telephone.

Jean talking to her “Dear little Charlie” and Judith saying Charlie was making a nuisance of himself at the Church Bazaar.

So confusing which Charlie they were talking about.

Afternoon tea was served after an enjoyable afternoon.

June 26 The Clubrooms were tastefully displayed for our mid-winter Christmas dinner.

Members and husbands enjoyed a lovely meal provided by Sandy’s catering.

July 3 Patrons Choice Jane Wright explained the possibility of the future Hospice.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club Twenty-four members of this Club practised enthusiastically over the last few months to bring a charity concert to the Tinwald Hall on the 28th June.

Proceeds were donated to St John and Elaine Vallender accepted a cheque for $3,135.00.

Thursday, July 9, 2015 Broadway and Cabaret Compere and president, Lorraine Pluck, welcomed the 350 plus people and the two-hour concert followed. Members included Lanae and Bruce Hill playing and singing their selection of four songs. So very easy to listen to.

The seven-strong keyboard group played four medleys, with some lovely harmonising.

The Club singing group accompanied by Audrey Ritchie entertained with eight cheery songs.

Our only solo was Karen Smith who gets such beautiful music and beautiful sounds from her keyboard.

The always popular seven-strong accordion group ably led by Bernard Reddecliffe on the organ entertained with four bright medleys. We had six hands on one piano, Audrey Ritchie, Fairlie Matsinger and Rose Stead, playing three trios.

Ann Allott on piano and son, Ross, on saxophone played three delightful songs.

Lorraine kept everyone entertained with her humorous monologue and fill-ins (more giggling) and the two hours flew by.

A lucky ticket basket was drawn and the great audience was applauded for their attendance and appreciation.

Our thanks to Lushingtons for their plants across the front of the stage, and to everyone for all of the willingly given help.

Ashburton Indoor Bowls There’s been plenty happening in the indoor bowls world over the last week.

Firstly, and most importantly, as reported earlier this week congratulations must go out to Grant Wilson, Michael Lawson, Christine Talbot and Hazel Mitchell who have won their way through to the national final of the New Zealand Mixed Fours.

Special mention to Michael too, can’t have been easy beating your mother-inlaw and brother-in-law as well as other members of your family!

Last Thursday the Triples all of one Club were held at the stadium with victory claimed by the Rakaia side of Jim Stewart, John Gibbs and Maurice Berkeley – well done team.

On Saturday the Doak Mixed Pairs were held with seven combinations qualifying.

It was Darryn Turner and Laura Mackenzie who shone through though beating Jim Stewart and Noeline Brough.

On Sunday our Patterson squad had their final hit out ahead of next week’s trip to Blenheim against a selection of players from around the district – thanks to those who took time out to come and give the side a run.

Things don’t slow down this week either.

On Tuesday night a triples tournament was held with the Ellis boys, Russell, Cameron and David emerging on top.

On Saturday a contingent will head to Timaru to try and defend the Triangular trophy against South Canterbury and Timaru and on Sunday a number of players are heading to Christchurch for the Canterbury pairs.

Ashburton Petanque Club Wednesday July 1 Ashburton Petanque Club hosted a small tournament between Mt Hutt College and Ashburton College.

Because of illness 2 of our club players filled in as did a teacher from each school. Ashburton College won gaining 8 wins and Mt Hutt had 7 wins.

Highest point scorers for Mt Hutt were Graeme Robertson and Lee Austin with 13 points. Second highest scorers from Mt Hutt were Jayda Roroa-Devery and Ben Lightfoot. Top scorers from Ashburton College were Emily Hickman and Shannon Crequer with 7 points. Second highest were Fletcher Arnold and Shae Philpott with 4 points. Both teams showed a lot of ability and great sportsmanship.

A real pleasure to host these teams.

Ashburton Savage Club The annual combined night of the Savage & Wahine Clubs was held in the Savage Club hall on Tuesday evening the July 7. These are very informal evenings with each club being the host on alternate years.

The evening commenced at 6.00pm with a “meet & greet” followed by the main course of a “Pot Luck” meal at 6.30pm.

Members from both clubs provided main and sweet courses, which resulted in a wonderful selection of great food.

Each club contributed items for a short concert.

Tinwald Branch New Zealand Red Cross General Meeting was held July 7. President Lynette Lovett welcomed members and Zella McGirr Mid-South Area Chairman and all read the Red Cross Principles.

Two members were presented with New Members packs then members were presented with a NZRC Certificate of Appreciation in this Centenary Year of New Zealand Red Cross. Correspondence included thanks from the Centennial Committee for members who were involved in the Knitting project which distributed 440 pairs of mittens to 14 schools in Mid Canterbury, invitation to Red Cross event on November 10 and a Church Service to be held on November 15. An update from National on NZRC response to the Ebola, Cyclone Pam and the earthquake in Nepal.

A new phone App with Civil Defence Alerts and information has been launched.

Details for the September meeting with the Foundation of the Blind were finalised. Thanks was given to members who provided baking etc for the grieving Cook Island Community.

Two members attended a Christchurch reception to meet Mr As Sy the new Secretary of the International Federation Red Cross Red Crescent based in Geneva. Next meeting August 4.

The AGM followed the General Meeting.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORTS Anama Rural Women June 2015 Anama Rural Women enjoyed a pleasant midday meal at the Lake Hood home of Jacky and Frank Ryan in place of the usual June meeting.

The company was convivial, the food was delicious, the day was mild and the lake and mountain scenery spectacular.

Seafield For the 84th birthday of the Seafield Rural Women eight members met at the Robbies Restaurant for our meeting and lunch.

The motto for the month was travel makes one modest.

You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.

We took the main business as read but went through the correspondence and reminded members about the Provincial AGM in August.

One of our members has finished an-

other five rugs to go to the Child Cancer Ward in Christchurch.

We discussed the president’s desire to stand down and what would happen to the branch if no replacement was found.

Everyone has a month to think about it.

Lynnford Rural Women Seventeen members met at Lochlea Lifestyle Resort, for our June meeting.

Our recent catering for the Hinds Ploughing Association was a great success, and the weather was very kind to us.

Marion reported on the link meeting at Winchmore, provincial has two fund raisers fudge and baking paper/glad wrap.

Deidre Moss presented her Falls and Prevention programme, bookings can be made through Age Concern.

Tony Sands then addressed our meeting enlightening us with the lifestyle resort tour of the complex, covering 8.2 hectares, with 40 villas already built and more planned.

We saw the community lounge which is utilised by the residences on many occasions.

The gym, library, indoor swimming pool, provide the amenities without having to leave the resort, residents have made some life time friendships which is so important for many who may be now living on their own.

The hospital is being built to provide aged care rest home and dementia care along with a few assisted care units.

Winchmore Branch For our July out and about meeting we were privileged to be taken around the Ashburton Art Gallery by the curator, Shirin Khosravini and shown the two current exhibitions and the gallery.

We were given an insight into the meanings of the exhibitions and how the exhibitors put meaning into their work.

Then it was on to the heritage part of the building with our host Michael Hanrahan. His knowledge of the workings

and function of this part of the building was very informative and complimented the displays viewed.

We were also shown around the storage rooms and were astounded at the many items stored for future reference.

We then moved out to Hotel Ashburton for Lunch.

While there, Jill Walkham was presented with a friendship rug, on the occasion of her 80th birthday. The rug was made up of peggy squares knitted by our members and put together by Gwenda Hansen.

Gwenda had also knitted a centre piece for the rug depicting Jill’s Greenstreet involvement.

The branch has had another busy month with hosting the recent Link meeting, supplied food for a members family luncheon, raised funds for the branch with a Garage Sale and once again ran the annual Winchmore Rural Women Quiz.

Emotional test looms

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY He survived the toughest of tests at Apia Park, and now Dan Carter is focusing on another with emotional significance - playing for the All Blacks in Christchurch for the final time.

Crucially, Carter came through the 80 minutes uninjured despite attracting the attention of several Manu Samoa players eager to leave their mark, and he is in pole position to retain the No10 jersey against Argentina at AMI Stadium on Friday next week.

Beauden Barrett is his main competition, but with Carter kicking seven from eight and playing a crucial part in George Moala’s try by putting a wellweighted cross-kick into his hands, one of Canterbury’s favourite sons is likely to get the honour of the chance for a repeat performance.

Leg injuries meant Carter played only one of the two tests in the United Kingdom last November; after being considered underdone for the England test he started against Scotland and his lack of match fitness was quickly apparent.

He didn’t play in the final game against Wales in Cardiff.

Now, though, he has every chance of taking advantage of the absence from Samoa of Hurricanes’ first-five Barrett in the first test of the Rugby

“I guess there will be a few emotions,” he said.

“Just like the Samoan boys who played today - it was a great place for them to play in front of their friends and family.

“You could tell it meant so much to them.

“I love playing in Christchurch - every time I play there in the black jersey it just means something special.

“For it to be my last game in the black jersey there will mean a lot and I’ll just do whatever I can to be a part of that game.”

This test needed an experienced and calm head and the All Blacks certainly have that with Carter.

The acceleration of old may not be there, but his ability to guide a team around a park remains intact.

Carter said he was relatively satisfied with his performance, but would like to have moved the hard-charging Manu Samoa defence around a bit more.

“The physicality was right up there and you expect that every time you come up against a Pacific Islands team.

Genia staying home?

Will Genia’s Wallabies and Queensland Reds teammate James Slipper has welcomed talk of the star No.9 backflipping on a deal to play in France. Fairfax Media reported the 58-Test halfback Genia had recently approached the Australian Rugby Union about reneging on his three-year deal with Stade Francais. Prop Slipper admitted he didn’t know all of the particulars of Genia’s situation, but said having the halfback remain in Australia could only be a good thing. - AAP

Beale ‘new Campese’ Kurtley Beale has the ability to play a similar role to the great David Campese on the wing for the Wallabies, according to World Cup-winning coach Bob Dwyer.

Speculation is rife the NSW Waratahs’ No.12 will be selected on the wing for the Rugby Championship, starting against South Africa at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on July 18, and Dwyer likes the idea. “Kurtley Beale is a guy who does things rather than a guy who makes things,” said the 1991 World Cup-winning coach. “The guy who does things is ideally placed in the back three. I don’t want to play him in the midfield because he is not a guy who makes space for others.”

Bird moving to Chiefs The Chiefs have attracted another All Black from the Crusaders with lock Dominic Bird signing with the franchise for the next two years. At 2.06m tall, Bird is set to become the tallest member in the Chiefs squad. Chiefs coach Dave Rennie believes the 120kg player will complement his forward pack well. “Men of Dominic’s dimensions and athleticism are a rarity in our game. That excites us,” said Rennie.

“He has impressed us with his attitude, his enthusiasm and his determination to develop his game.

Keith back in NZ side Ashburton’s Sandra Keith has been named in Bowls New Zealand’s teams to compete at both this year’s Asia Pacific Championships and November’s Australian Premier League (APL) in Queensland.

The Asia Pacific Championships to be held in Christchurch will be attended by 17 countries, all trying to gain one of the 10 qualifying spots for the following year’s World Championships.

New Zealand, as host of the following year’s 2016 World Championship event, automatically qualifies as does Australia who are the reigning team world champions.

Both teams will however still compete in this year’s event.

In naming the team Dave Edwards the Convenor of Selectors and his selection panel have made a number of changes to the team that competed in March’s Trans-Tasman test against Australia.

In the women’s team Katelyn Inch (19) and Angela Boyd (29), both from Canterbury, will make their debuts.

Both players were members of the champion Canterbury team at this year’s Inter Centre Championship.

Boyd was also a member of the successful Trans-Tasman Development team in March and won this year’s Pairs title, with her sister Mandy, at the Heartland Bank National Open Championships.

She also made the semi-finals of the singles at the same event.

Katelyn Inch is a past NZ Secondary Schools’ champion, was a runner up in the mixed pairs with Sheldon BagrieHowley at the Junior World

Cup held on the Gold Coast in March of this year and has for the past two years been part of the Bowls High Performance Pathways programme.

In the men’s side two former New Zealand representatives return.

Current national singles champion Mike Kernaghan along with Paul Girdler, who

last played for New Zealand in 2004, have been selected.

Girdler was a runner-up in the recent Australian Open fours event. A team that also included fellow Blackjack Shannon McIroy.

Dave Edwards commented that “the Asia Pacific event is another major step along the road to the 2016 World Cham-

pionships and as a panel we were obviously keen to select not only a strong team that will win us medals but at the same time test some players while giving us the ability to look at selection options.

“In the women’s team we are delighted for both Katelyn Inch and Angela Boyd who have earned the right to be capped with their recent performances.

“For the men it is fantastic to see the return of Mike Kernaghan and Paul Girdler to the International stage. Both have performed well for NZ in the past and we were happy that they both made the decision to make themselves available again.”

For the APL the selectors have retained the same players from 2014.

Serena v Sharapova in 20th career episode

By Darren Walton It’s the 20th instalment of tennis’s greatest non-rivalry and this time Maria Sharapova isn’t talking up her chances.

A loser in the past 16 episodes stretching back more than a decade, Sharapova has learnt not to rattle Serena Williams’ cage ahead of tonight’s marquee Wimbledon semi-final.

Williams and Sharapova will clash at the All England Club for the first time in five years and only the second time since the Russian stunned the tennis world in the 2004 title match to become the third-youngest

women’s champion in history.

Just 17 back then, Sharapova hasn’t beaten Williams since despite snaring another four grand slam crowns in the meantime.

In the Olympics final in 2012, on the very same centre court on which they will meet tonight, Sharapova won one solitary game in a humbling 6-0 6-1 experience.

“It’s always a new match.

“I haven’t had great success against her. I would love to change that around. That’s how I look at it,” Sharapova said after dropping her first set of the championships in a 6-3 6-7

(3-7) 6-2 quarter-final victory over unseeded American Coco Vandeweghe.

Sharapova at least knows what to expect from the world No.1.

“Definitely no secrets between each other’s games,” said the fourth seed.

Not surprisingly, Williams said she relished facing Sharapova.

“I love playing Maria. I think she brings out the best in me.

“I think I bring out the best in her,” the 33-year-old said after her 3-6 6-2 6-3 quarter-final success over another old rival, former world No.1 and dual

Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka.

“I thought we had a wonderful final in Australia. It was very entertaining. She played really well.”

And lost. Yet again.

Amping up the mind games even further, Williams, already a 20-times major winner, said she was free-rolling, playing with the house’s money.

“I don’t feel like I have any pressure going into this match.

We both actually lost early last year,” she said.

“We both are kind of enjoying this moment and one of us will be in the final.”

Netballers in play-off The Mainland U19 netball team, featuring Mid Canterbury’s Kate Lloyd and Sophie Worsfold, had another big day at the National U19 tournament in Auckland yesterday. The team, coming off a loss on Tuesday, faced yet another defeat yesterday going down 34-25 to the Hawke’s Bay in the pool crossover post section play.

Mainland then played off against Taranaki in the late game but were pipped at the post - the final score 24-23. This means the girls will now play-off against Rotorua today for 15th place.

Pacquiao ready to fight Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao said yesterday he was recovering well after surgery for a shoulder injury, a news report said. “I’m ready to fight, next year,” he said in Indonesia when was asked whether he was ready for a re-match with Floyd Mayweather after their fight in May, the Viva. co.id news website reported.

Pacquiao tore a rotator cuff in his right shoulder while on training and during the much-anticipated fight against Mayweather on May 2 and underwent surgery afterwards. Pacquiao lost the fight by unanimous decision.

Foran focused on Manly Departing Manly five-eighth Kieran Foran says he’s looking forward to a strong finish to his stint at Brookvale as he aims to lift the Sea Eagles to an unlikely finals charge into September. Foran last week confirmed he’ll move to Parramatta next NRL season after the Eels put the deal in jeopardy by backtracking on a number of clauses in his contract. The 24-year-old refused to go into detail on the dramatic saga but admitted he was relieved to finally put his future to bed. “Good relief to get that all over with now,” he said yesterday.

Stokes key for England England captain Alastair Cook believes allrounder Ben Stokes could have as big an impact upon the Ashes as Andrew Flintoff did a decade ago. Flintoff was the star of England’s 2005 Ashes series victory with 402 runs and 24 wickets as they beat Australia in a Test campaign for the first time since 1986/87.

Stokes, like Flintoff a hard-hitting batsman and lively seamer, impressed during England’s first Test win against New Zealand at Lord’s this season with dashing innings of 92 and 101, as well as taking two wickets in two balls on the last day. Asked who might emerge as an Ashes hero this year, Cook told a news conference: “I’m going to pick another allrounder - Ben Stokes.”

Martin in yellow jersey Tony Martin felt nothing but joy as he finally grabbed hold of the race leader’s yellow jersey with a brilliant solo victory on the Tour de France cobbled fourth stage.

The German three-time world timetrial champion broke clear of a reduced peloton with 3.3km left and held off the charging pack to win by three seconds from John Degenkolb and Peter Sagan at the end of the 223.5km stage from Seraing to Cambrai.

Accolades well overdue for top reinsman

Last week I talked about the deeds of Dexter Dunn, and how racing needs to push more of their superstars into the more mainstream spotlight.

It’s a logical point and one which I’m sure we might see pushed more in the future.

A little closer to home this week though and you could say the same for Mid Canterbury’s own Ricky May (right).

For as long as almost anyone cares to remember, May has been

a shining star of harness racing in New Zealand. The most successful New Zealand Trotting Cup winning driver, a winner of more than 2000 races and closing in on 3000 at a pretty rapid pace – May is a superstar too in his own right.

In 1989, May posted his first top five finish in the national drivers’ premiership.

Come August 1 this year, May will have since then only twice missed being in the top five – finishing sixth and seventh in the years that he missed.

So for almost 30 years the Meth-

ven farmer has been one of the best in New Zealand.

You’ll struggle to find many people around the globe who can lay claim to being that consistently good for such an extended period of time.

But that’s Ricky May for you.

He just jumps in the sulky, heads out onto the track and gets the job done – week in and week out.

With a few weeks of this season remaining he will be looking to chase down his fourth consecutive 100-win season. He sits currently on 94 wins, so the task is still a big

one but May has the horsepower to get there although his personal best tally of 115 is likely out of reach.

My question is though – do we fully recognise the achievements of a guy like Ricky?

When was the last time he was nominated for Mid Canterbury sportsman of the year?

Has he ever been nominated?

He’s pushed the claims of Mid Canterbury as a region more than most of our leading sportsman – but does so with very few accolades.

Maybe that needs to be changed too?

All Blacks pushed to the limit

BY GREGOR PAUL An afternoon kickoff, a full house, a dry ball and two ferocious teams ready to knock each other’s heads off - hard to see now why anyone was ever reluctant to take the All Blacks to Apia.

Even harder to know is why New Zealand Rugby seem to be determined to not come back.

Madness ... utter madness if they don’t see the value of a return visit and not in 100 years or whatever silly time frame they have in mind.

This was test football Pacificstyle and, like Oliver Twist, everyone needs to be asking, ‘please sir, can we have some more?’

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Manu Samoa, perhaps a little nervous in the first half, suddenly found themselves in the second and it was game on.

Serious game on because, for most of the last 30 minutes,

they owned the All Blacks.

They were better in all the key areas and as their confidence surged, the passes started to go to hand, the running lines became natural rather than contrived and they had belief.

They also had the All Blacks on the ropes, and finished only nine points in arrears at 16-25.

Few teams have rattled the All Blacks quite like this in the last four years but Samoa just wouldn’t relent.

Whatever Samoa are striving to be as they embrace a more professional set-up, they won’t lose the essence of themselves.

They are, still, the greatest warrior team on the planet.

No one tackles quite like they do. No team has that same thunderous approach.

Not even the All Blacks.

Their tackling was, frankly, terrifying - the one-on-one hits were off the scale.

the rather poor choice of tilting his lance as it were at the oversized Alesana Tuilagi. The big Samoan has the turning circle of a Honda Odyssey so, typically, the best ploy in trying to avoid his full 130kg of particular carnage is to apply some kind of dodging tactic.

Moala obviously didn’t get the memo or, more worryingly, work out after the first time he was sent 5m back, not to run the same line again a few minutes later.

Tuilagi’s hits were brutal, but there were plenty of others who were phenomenal.

There was no doubt a few All Blacks became a little edgy after 20 minutes - scanning for the blue jersey that was going to fly in.

It was much the same at the breakdown where Samoa gave as good than they got.

Their discipline was largely good and their technique, awareness and understanding of when to commit was up there with the

best teams in the world.

The pity was that Samoa sacrificed accuracy for passion.

While they rattled the All Blacks with their defensive punch and presence at the collision, they couldn’t screw the nut tighter.

Twice Tusi Pisi, with a stiff breeze at his back, couldn’t find touch from penalties. Their lineout wobbled and their scrum creaked and, with that, came penalty opportunities for the All Blacks and Daniel Carter.

This was his type of game - a test of his nerve and temperament and he nailed it.

It was his six penalties that won the All Blacks the test.

New Zealand needed to take the points when they were offer, they needed a settling influence - a calm head and measured boot to nudge the scoreboard into the right place.

That was Carter.

Amid the mayhem of the tackled ball area and the ferocity that was

everywhere, Carter gave the All Blacks shape and direction and just enough cohesion to sneak home. What felt more important, though, was that, while the scoreboard said the All Blacks had won, really, everyone had won.

The All Blacks could play a lifetime of June tests against the likes of Wales and England and not one would connect like this.

Rugby is so intent to work its way into new territories and yet they have what is effectively an untouched haven in the Pacific.

No one wants less of this type of rugby. How could they?

Who, regardless of whether they had seen the game played before, wouldn’t have been memorised by the physicality and intensity?

It took the All Blacks a lifetime to come to Apia. It can’t take a lifetime for them to return.
