No surgery for Hunter Former supermodel Rachel Hunter has confessed she seriously considered undergoing plastic surgery after becoming “horrified” by photos of herself in the media. Rod Stewart’s ex-wife reveals unflattering tabloid pictures and critical comments made by beauty critics online made her a little self-conscious about her looks, even though she liked what she saw when she checked out a mirror. “In real life I was fairly happy with myself,” the New Zealand-born model, 46, said. “(But) in photos I was horrified. Local demand for help high

Women’s refuge services are run off their feet in Ashburton, spending up to three days a week in the district.

Mid South Island Women’s Refuge and Family Safety Services manager Dawn Rangi-Smith said outreach case workers regularly travelled from the Timaru based service to visit Ashburton clients.

Just this week an outreach case worker reported having a very busy day in the region, and another staff member made the trip to Ashburton yesterday to visit clients, she said.

However, Mrs Rangi-Smith said

this trend wasn’t unusual and historically Ashburton was very busy.

Exactly why the region was rife with domestic violence incidents was not known but Mrs RangiSmith said substance abuse and other issues such as financial pressures played a part.

Not only are women from Ashburton visited by the refuge’s caseworkers, they are also eligible to stay in the Timaru-based safe house, she said.

If needed, transport can be provided for those unable to get themselves to the safe house and other options including counselling and help with protection or-

ders are also available for women living outside Timaru.

Victim Support workers were also on hand in Ashburton and case workers worked closely with the Police and other agencies, she said.

Currently Mrs Rangi-Smith said there was not a lot of pressure on the safe house, however other areas such as Christchurch were dealing with very high demand.

“We’re not so bad, I know Christchurch are struggling to keep up with the demand for the beds in their safe house but we are not so bad this year,” she said.

“But that all could change today, from one day to the next we

don’t know.” Just last week a crisis line worker thought a woman and five children would need to be accommodated but at the 11th hour alternative arrangements were made.

As well as access to the refuge’s services Ashburton has its own family violence services which sees more than one person a day referred.

Stopping Violence Services has been operating in Ashburton since August of last year and Work and Income New Zealand also runs a Family Violence Intervention Programme which averages around 50 clients from Ashburton each year.

Concrete steps taken towards AAU taking shape

When complete the new single storey building will house one theatre, a nurses’ station and a recovery area.

A lift will be installed to the building in an effort to connect it to the second level of the newly refurbished Ward Block C. The existing ambulance bay will be moved to become part of the new area and all inpatients will get to experience the new and improved section of the hospital.

A spokesperson for the Canterbury District Health Board said once the concrete has been cured to the point where it could be worked on without compromising its strength, the constuction team will begin to erect the building’s framing.

Ashburton Hospital’s new Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) and theatre building is taking shape, with the concrete foundation now in place.

A construction team poured 173 cubic metres of concrete yesterday, beginning at 5am and covering an area of 826sqm.

The work was originally due to be completed last month but had to be rescheduled when a large piece of reinforcing was unfortunately delayed.

Manager of Ashburton Health Services Bernie Marra said to have some visible progress on the building made for a fantastic start to 2016.

Jobs lost with more possible

Nearly 20 people have not transferred to the new Canterbury tertiary organisation CPIT Aoraki following a merger between the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology and Aoraki Polytechnic on December 31.

The merger was announced

by Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment minister Steven Joyce as a way to “provide the highest quality tertiary education for learners” in the Canterbury region.

However, the Tertiary Educa-

tion Union (TEU) had previously expressed concerned for some of its members who could have their jobs cut.

A CPIT Aoraki spokesperson confirmed that of the existing 139 Aoraki Polytechnic staff, 135 offers were made to staff to transition to the new organisation.

Two roles were duplicated and those staff were made redundant and two roles were not required due to a programme with low enrolments not running, she said.

Of the 135 people offered a job, fourteen chose either retirement

or not to accept the offer.

Tertiary Education Union (TEU) organiser Kris Smith said CPIT had made a pragmatic decision to bring across all Aoraki Polytechnic staff except where there was no fit.

However, because the announcement of the merger happened so late in the year there was not enough time for CPIT to look at how everything would fit into place in the new organisation.

Throughout this year the running of the organisation and courses would probably be

looked into and more people could lose their jobs, Ms Smith said.

“No doubt there will be duplications. I should think there will be changes.”

It was a stressful time for all staff and many did not know what to expect from the year, she said.

“People are not really entirely sure how everything is going to be run.”

The new organisation will trade under CPIT Aoraki until late March when its new name will be launched.

Ashburton earned itself a place on NIWA’s national climate summary hall of fame for last month, with December’s 35.3 degrees logged on December 21 the second highest temperature for the month since 1928.

Ashburton’s scorcher was the fifth highest in New Zealand for the month, beaten only by Leeston’s 36.4 degrees, Cheviot’s 36.1, Christchurch’s 36 and Orari Estate, with 35.4 degrees.

In spite of a temperature spike later in the month, December’s temperatures were generally near average.

The month was generally very dry with several areas having near record low rainfall. The low rainfall following a dry November meant soil moisture levels continued to deplete around the country. By January 1 these were below normal across the country.

The driest place in New Zealand for the month was Toenepi in the Waikato, where just two millimetres of rain fell. Alexandra was also well up the dry spot list with just 11 millimetres of rain.

Lake Tekapo recorded the highest number of sunshine hours in December, 314, but for the year, on 2737 hours had to be content with third sunniest spot, behind Blenheim, 2803 hours and Whakatane, 2785 hours.

The chilliest place in New Zealand during the month was Tuarangi with a mean minimum air temperature of 8.3 degrees.

The Ashburton District also made it into the record books for the December 13 tornado where a silage wagon was lifted off the ground near Carew. The extreme wind gust title for the month, howver went to Cape Reinga at 141 kilometres per hour.

Flying fists spark awe A video of Joseph Parker’s fists flying at speed while training with his coach has inspired awe among boxing fans.

The video was posted by coach Kevin Barry’s son Taylor yesterday, with the message “too fast” and the hashtag #speedkills.

Social media users were quick to comment on the Kiwi heavyweight’s flurry of fists.

Jake Revill said: “Effortless punches with so much speed and power it’s incredible. Any man willing to step in the ring with parker better get himself used to blunt force trauma.”

Bob Sorensen posted: “I bet Kevin has arthritis in his hands by now.”

Martin Griffiths commented: “Joe has some serious speed for a heavyweight keep up the good work.”

EBA arrest A 36-year-old Ashburton man was arrested after driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 492mcg on Methven Highway at 9.25pm on Thursday. He was also ticketed for driving at 123km/h.

Ambulance call-outs A teenage girl was transported by St John ambulance to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries after falling off a motorcycle on Gates Road at 5.53am on Thursday.

St John Ashburton also sent an ambulance to the Bedrock Bar, Harrison Street, at 7.40am on Thursday after a man, aged in his 70s, collapsed. He was transported to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries.

Both legs lost The motorcyclist who lost both legs in a crash with a truck remains critically unwell in Auckland City Hospital. “The man remains critical,” a hospital spokesman said yesterday. The crash occurred around 4.30pm on Thursday at the Royal Road bridge over the North-western Motorway in Massey. Police investigations into the crash were ongoing, a police spokeswoman said. The truck driver had been discharged from Waitakere Hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Motorcyclist killed A motorcyclist involved in crash with a truck in Taranaki yesterday has died. The accident happened 2km north of the Awakino Gorge Tunnel on State Highway 3 about 12.45pm. Police later confirmed the motorcyclist had died. Police closed SH3 while the serious crash unit examines the scene, and the highway was likely to be blocked for some time. The motorcyclist’s name would not be released until the family had been notified.

Pursuit arrests Two men have been arrested and will appear in the Palmerston North District Court on a number of charges after a high-speed chase in the city. At 7am yesterday, suspicious activity was reported at a local business in Church St and as the police were attending a vehicle left the location. Officers signalled for the driver of the vehicle to pull over and stop but said he refused. “A high-speed chase began and when the speed of the offending vehicle began increasing the police patrol abandoned their pursuit,” a police spokesperson said. “A short time later the offending driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed. The two occupants of the offending vehicle were uninjured and were arrested.”

Suspicious fire A building at a Christchurch secondary school was severely damaged in a suspicious fire early yesterday. Southern Fire shift manager Rewi Grace said the fire broke out in a small building at the southern end of Christchurch Boys’ High School at 1.30am. Firefighters arrived to find the property well ablaze and took two hours to extinguish the blaze. Police and fire investigators were at the scene later yesterday.

Safety concerns ‘surprising’

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess is surprised at the results of a survey suggesting firefighters are bending safety rules.

A New Zealand Fire Service report included results of a survey canvassing 3248 staff and volunteers last year, who gave the service an overall score of 8.1 out of 10 for its safety culture.

Despite the high score, 95.1 per cent agreed with the statement that “My officer/manager asks personnel to bend safety rules or take short-cuts”.

The report recommends cutting down on paperwork for volunteers, and one respondent said people were turning up to fires impaired by alcohol.

However, Mr Burgess said he was surprised by some of the results, and he never asked his

Alan Burgess firefighters to take safety shortcuts. Following incidents such as the Waikato fatal cool-store explosion in 2008, the fire service had put into place some remedial actions for brigades.

These were around activities such as the use of breathing apparatus, personal protective equipment and command of control at incidents.

Any slowing down of response as a result would be minimal, and while preparing for incidents might take a little longer than it used to, it was best that firefighters were fit for purpose and ready to go and do the job, Mr Burgess said.

“These things have been put in place for a very, very good reason. I would be really surprised if people were taking short-cuts, that’s not the culture of the fire service,” Mr Burgess said.

And with regard to paper work, the level had increased in recent years, but it was one that Mr Burgess found “quite manageable”.

And with regard to the risk of firefighters turning up to emergency call-outs after drinking, Mr Burgess said he had relentlessly pushed the message over the years, that if you had been drinking then do not turn up to a call-out.

“It’s as simple as that,” he said.

There were a good number of firefighters at the brigade to respond to calls, so it was not necessary to rely on those who may have been drinking.

There was also a leave system that the brigade operated, so those planning on attending a function could signal to others they would be out of action for that night.

Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Donald Dunlea agreed with Mr Burgess on all counts.

He said he followed all safety regulations, and while there was a lot of paper work, it could be handled by delegating tasks among fellow members.

And when it came to alcohol, the brigade had no problems at all.

“They (firefighters) know the rules and they heed to them, and that’s all I ask them to do,” Mr Dunlea said.

Wayward irrigator blocks Mid Canterbury road

A Mid Canterbury farm is minus one of its centre pivot irrigation systems after it went out of control and careened into a power pole on Thompsons Track at 8.20pm on Thursday.

Sergeant Bryan Ennis, of Ashburton, said police were called to attend the incident and assist with traffic because the irrigator was blocking the road.

A small section of the road between Methven Highway and Dip Road was closed while the structure was moved.

Firearms incident Hutt Valley police have finished their search at a property where people were seen with firearms on Thursday. They have spoken to one person who lives at the property and another was to be interviewed late yesterday. Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Barnett said that at no time was a firearm brandished at anyone. “We are following leads in relation to the case and have reason to believe that this was not a random unprovoked incident,” he said. A stolen vehicle was found at the scene and was to be examined yesterday.

Unknown substance Two females were airlifted to Waikato Hospital on Thursday night after drinking an “unknown substance”. Ambulance and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were alerted to the situation at Waihi Beach just before 8pm. At the popular holiday spot, two female patients had medical complaints after drinking the unknown substance. They were airlifted 70km to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition. An ambulance spokeswoman said the substance still hadn’t been identified. - NZME

Murder charge A Mount Roskill man accused of murdering a woman in Remuera on Thursday has been granted name suppression. The 24-yearold appeared in the Auckland District Court yesterday charged with one count of murder. The accused did not apply for bail. He appeared calm during the hearing.

He smiled once towards the end of the appearance. The accused was remanded in custody until his next appearance in the High Court on January 27. His name suppression will be revisited then.

Victim identified The woman murdered in the leafy Auckland suburb of Remuera while out for her morning run on Thursday was Joanne Marie Pert.

Ms Pert was 41 and is survived by two children – a daughter aged 6 and a 7-year-old son. A friend of one of Ms Pert’s relatives said the family in Whanganui were too upset to talk to media. “It’s unreal ... they don’t have the answers, all they have is a broken heart.”

Didymo is driving away holidaymakers from Mid Canterbury rivers and streams.

It has been a summer of prolific blooming for the unsightly algae, which has colonised eastern South Island water systems since entering New Zealand in 2004.

Woolshed Creek camper Nathan Driscoll and his friends set up a campsite at the creek carpark between Christmas and New Year, planning to go rafting and swimming.

But thick mats of slimy white algae with brown flecks made it

impossible to walk into the creek without slipping over, let alone swim in it.

“It looks like white snot really, it’s pretty gross,” said Mr Driscoll, who is originally from Ashburton but now lives in Christchurch.

“It doesn’t give you much of a reason to go camping there now.”

The area had previously been an annual destination for Mr Driscoll and his friends, and there would usually be many other campers in the carpark as well. However, this year their tents had been the only ones, and he suspected the reason was because of the algae, which he

thought was didymo.

He questioned why signs were not erected in the area to warn people not to spread it further afield.

Department of Conservation ranger biodiversity Brad Edwards said the infestation observed by Mr Driscoll and friends would almost certainly be didymo. It had been a “real boomer year” for the algae to enter its “bloom phase”.

On the other hand, floods last month had washed infestations out of some areas.

Didymo diatoms were present in most of Mid Canterbury’s rivers and streams, and the algae

was visible in a lot of them, including the Rakaia, Rangitata and Ashburton rivers.

It was a tragedy that it had colonised such waterways, and could affect wildlife, although specific impacts had not been quantified.

It could also make fishing impossible by weighing down lines, and drive away tourists.

The “check, clean, dry” campaign to raise awareness and stop the spread of the algae was distributed by agencies such as biosecurity and DOC. There may have been a sign in the Woolshed Creek area once, and he could put another one up.

“Gisborne is the obvious place to house this detailed sculpture of the quintessential Kiwi farmer and his precocious pooch,” said Weta communications manager Erik Hay. “It is the town Footrot Flats creator Murray Ball and his wife Pam call home.”

The sculpture was seven months in the making for the Weta crew, who first created

small models to see how Mr Ball’s iconic illustrations could best be translated into threedimensional characters.

“The models were then sculpted in Plasticine at full size before undergoing a complex moulding and lost-wax bronzecasting process,” Mr Hay said.

Once the bronze components were cast, the 14 pieces were delivered into the hands of lead mould-maker and fabricator Bruce Campbell.

He was tasked with welding

and fettling the 300kg sculpture, before giving Wal and Dog their burnished bronze coats.

The completed work arrived in Gisborne last month but it cannot be installed at its intended location, on the grass in front of the H.B. Williams Memorial Library, before a major library redevelopment project is completed in 2017.

Until then, it will take up temporary central city residence on the banks of the Taruheru River.

Two top former Auckland Grammar students are calling for the prestigious boys school to change how it deals with gay and transgender students after the pair revealed they had to keep their sexuality secret during high school.

Former school dux Henry Yuen and head boy Joel Bateman have set up a GrammarPride blog to highlight concerns of boys who don’t identify as heterosexual, and are appealing for a support network to be established at the school.

The pair, who are both studying at top universities in the United States, have spoken candidly of their struggle to conform to “heteronormative Grammar way”.

They believe the school, which propelled them to outstanding academic and sporting success, needs to address serious shortcomings in its treatment of rainbow youth.

The men, who finished their schooling in 2012, came out independently in the year after they left high school.

The high-achieving pair said while they outwardly gave the appearance of motivated, successful students they were losing sleep every night, fearing the consequences of being outed as gay.

Mr Bateman said the school proved a hostile environment to anyone who strayed from “normal” sexuality where the word “gay” was constantly used in a derogatory manner and “faggot” or “homo” were socially acceptable teases.

But both men say they could not be openly gay at Auckland Grammar as it would have resulted in bullying and social isolation within the homophobic Grammar culture.

Mr Yuen, now studying engineering and computer science at Duke University, said, as a prefect, he felt conflicted because he could not uphold his sexual orientation and Grammar identity simultaneously.

“Every day, I would dread going to class for being targeted and made fun of. Getting out of bed is already difficult enough for most people, but for me it was almost impossible because, at Grammar, I could not be myself. I was afraid, traumatised and had nobody to confide in.”

He said he was bullied since middle school and for a few years at Grammar for often “acting gay”.

Mr Bateman, who is at Harvard University studying human developmental and regenerative biology, said being gay, closeted and unsupported throughout his time at the school, meant learning was much more difficult than it should have been.

“I would struggle to even focus during school hours, especially during my final two years, as I stressed about the homophobic comments that were constantly being thrown about, and worried about how differently I’d be treated if I was ever found out,” he said.

The former rowing captain said, in contrast, he was sleeping well at university and found himself able to relax and focus in class, without fear of discrimination.

Summer singing school, 16 years on Ashburton College student Annelise Diamond can’t wait each year to take part in the annual Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School.

She speaks to founder Jo Castelow.

ast year the Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School marked its 15th anniversary, and we’re back for another great year!

For those unaware, summer singing school is an intense week of music and dance rehearsals for students aged from 9-21, those students are then split into juniors and seniors. We receive the music in the middle of December, and from then on we practise from home up until the week of summer school. Then it’s intense rehearsals spent on mixing voices, learning dance moves, and staging, with the juniors rehearsing in the morning, and seniors in the afternoon.

The lovely ladies that started this are the infamous dynamic duo Jo Castelow from Ashburton, and Alice Sollis from Timaru.

This year we have a medley from Aida written by Elton John and the current musical playing all over the world Kinky Boots set in England but written by Cyndi Lauper.

We are also looking at the wonderful music from the sixties, hence the name British Invasion.

Every segment has some sort of British link. My husband Paul came up with the idea this year.

There is always lots of discussion in our household about possible themes throughout the year.

How many juniors/seniors did you start with (generally) compared to the number of students

you have now?

The first year in 2000 had about 20-25 students in each section and the show was 45 minutes long and we just made it through to put on stage on the Friday night for one concert. Now the combined groups total over 120 students with three two-hour shows.

This year is British Invasion what type music could people expect to hear when they come along?

Some new music from Aida and Kinky Boots and plenty of toetapping, nostalgic and wonderful music from London in the sixties.

Performance dates this year?

Three concerts at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, on Friday January 15 at 7.30pm and Saturday January 16 at 2pm and 7.30pm.

What made you want to start up MCSSS? As a singing teacher I knew how many talented young singers were in the district and I wanted to start something that really challenged them vocally and prepared them well for musical theatre productions. The idea was to make it fun, something that they wanted to return to each year and above all improve their performing skills.

How do you manage to pick all the music every year?

It is an ongoing process all year and takes a while to come up with the finished product! The aim is to introduce the students to new

The reason I decided to take on this position was because I wanted to inspire the future leaders of our school and to help our students to make good decisions in and out of school. The past head boys have inspired me, so I want to do the same.

What was your reaction to being named head boy for 2016?

It was overwhelming, I was nervous for the whole Year 12 prizegiving and when my name was called I didn’t know what to think.

Will there be any aspects of your out-ofschool life which will be affected by the role?

No, I don’t think there will be any aspects affected by the role.

Something you hope to learn from being head boy?

I hope to learn more about leadership and what it’s really like to take on the responsibility of such a big role.

Do you think you are up for the challenge of being Ashburton College’s head boy for 2016?

I do think I’m up for the challenges this year and I can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store for Gemma (head girl) and I.

Technology in the classroom Ashburton Guardian reporter Ruby Harfield talks to several Mid Canterbury principals about the technological revolution in their schools.

R

ecent changes in technology have revolutionised the way students learn in schools.

Students no longer sit in rows of straight-backed chairs facing their teacher while copying down screeds of notes from a whiteboard.

Learning has become more individualised with students being able to use the internet and personal devices.

Many schools now use the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) system which can either be compulsory or optional and allows students to bring their own device – phone, tablet or laptop – to school to assist with learning.

Mid Canterbury’s two colleges are among secondary schools around the country to have used the internet and digital learning to their advantage.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said having students able to bring their own devices mean they could find information in an instant with internet at their fingertips, take photos of a whiteboard instead of spending hours writing notes and keep their parents updated with their learning.

Databases have now been created especially for schools which allowed them to share information with each other at the click of a button. Teachers and students could search Pythagoras or cellular biology and find resources uploaded from other schools or agencies.

While Mr McMillan supported students being able to bring their own devices to school he did not want to make it compulsory because of the expense to families and because not all classes used technology as much as others.

cial software for specific classes such as graphics.

Ashburton College had also adopted the government-provided broadband Network for Learning which enabled schools to use fast internet with uncapped data, online content filtering and network security services.

“We were one of the pilot schools.” They were also among a number of schools nationally to offer online classes.

Some teachers at Ashburton College offered their classes extramurally while students could take classes not offered at the college online through another school.

“There’s some pretty cool things happening out there.”

Starting from 2016, the school

would also not be offering diaries to students because they found that most students used their devices to organise their day.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said their school had also adopted a more digital way of learning. Last year they made BYOD compulsory for Year 9 and Year 13 students to assist with their learning.

While some parents were not happy about the cost, the school wanted to make it compulsory because it was beneficial for

access to information and it does allow for more individual learning.”

Many retail outlets had sales at the beginning of each year and the school assisted parents who had trouble providing devices for their children by letting them borrow school equipment.

BYOD would be rolled out to Year 10 and 12 students this year.

Devices in the school helped improve student knowledge and provided a more flexible and interactive way of learning, he said.

Students and teachers could use Google documents and update them remotely while they were not in class. They could also ask questions and provide tips on the documents.

Several years ago if students

wanted to use the internet they would have to know exactly when and why they wanted to use it and book computer time.

Because there were so many unknowns and dangers of the internet, students needed to make sure they were responsible and safe online. The school had developed a digital citizenship and if this was breached there would be consequences, Mr Schreurs said.

With the rise in students using digital devices there had been concerns about the loss of handwriting skills but digital devices actually helped many whose handwriting was a barrier to their learning.

Technology had also changed learning methods for younger students and several Mid Canterbury schools had also taken up BYOD. Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy said Year 5 and 6 students could bring their own devices to school but it was not compulsory.

The school invested heavily in their ICT equipment so students who did not bring their own device were not missing out.

But the benefit of BYOD was that learning could become seamless between school and home, Mr Murphy said.

Hampstead School also offered students the option of bringing their own phone or tablet to school and connecting to their Wi-Fi. Principal Peter Melrose said they would not make it compulsory in the near future because there was not the demand for it and the school had many of their own devices.

Still shooting for success Mid Canterbury has produced some sporting superstars in recent years. Many are still in the news, but some you don’t hear about so often any more. So where are they now? The Guardian’s Erin Tasker found out. Today she catches up with former Canterbury Flame netballer Jessica Leech.

L

ike most young netballers in New Zealand, Jessica Leech dreamed of one day wearing the Silver Fern.

And she got closer than many, after breaking into the then Canterbury Flames as a fresh-faced youngster in the early 2000s.

Netball was in her blood. Her mum and her two older sisters were both involved, so it was no surprise that she followed them into the sport.

She got to play with and against some of the country’s best netballers during her career, but today, her playing days are over and she’s moved to Australia to follow her career dreams instead.

Jessica moved to Melbourne in June. Due to having spent much of her 20s playing sport, studying and working, she never got the opportunity to do the traditional Kiwi big OE, so the move to Australia is her big overseas adventure.

“Straight out of school I went to university where I studied law and commerce. I then went on to complete my professionals in both fields whilst I worked fulltime. It’s only been at this point where I have felt it was right with my work experience and with having no ties that I could live abroad,” she said.

The move has also brought about a career change. After eight years working as a chartered accountant, she’s now a business banking manager for the ANZ, and loves it.

She also loves Melbourne as a home.

“It’s hectic … fun hectic. I think if you are sitting at home bored, you’re not doing Melbourne correctly. There is something always happening and the availability of restaurants, bars, concerts, shows and sporting fixtures is brilliant,” she said.

Sport has always been a part of her life. Jessica was in the Flames side in 2003 and 2005, and in 2004 played in the New Zealand Under-21 team.

“I don’t think I fully realised and appreciated how much the Flames shaped me as a person. I learnt valuable life skills and made amazing life-long friends on this journey.

“To train and play alongside some of the best netballers New Zealand has produced is truly an honour.”

Among the best she’s played with and against, were Villimaina Davu, Jodi Brown, Casey Kopua, Laura Langman, Wendy Frew and

Maria Tutaia.

But top of her list of the best players she got to play with was her idol, Belinda Colling.

“She scared me a lot when I first played in the Flames but to rub shoulders with her was a huge honour.”

Netball may look like it’s getting more and more physical, but Jessica said it was tough enough in her day.

“There were many games where I came off the court black and blue and the ice pack was my best friend,” Jessica said.

“However, today’s game is harder and faster and I think that is due to the fact that at the top level, netball is semi-professional. Being a professional gives the elite athletes more time to train and work on speed, conditioning and their mental toughness.

“The Government funding to the top sportspeople is becoming a lot more and sponsorship in netball is becoming a major source of funding for teams. With this comes the expectations of winning. Players do play harder and are extremely skilled at playing to the limit of the rules, with some pushing the boundaries.”

And when it comes to winning, Jessica’s heart still lies on this side of the Tasman, despite living in Australia now.

“You can take the girl out of New Zealand but you can never take New Zealand out of the girl. I will always 100 per cent back our Kiwi teams - no matter what the sport.”

It’s where she’s spent the bulk of her life until now, and where she first played netball as a six-yearold.

“Seven is the official age that you could start playing in town teams. At this early age I had to be at the netball courts every weekend with mum and my two sisters.

“It was because of this that I was able to fill in for the country team Wakanui who were short of players. So the very first team I played for was Wakanui before moving to my school team Allenton and on to Ashburton College as I got older.”

She had a love for the game, and a desire to succeed, and that came out in the way she played – and she got noticed.

“There is always someone watching at those tournaments so getting seen didn’t feel too hard.

“However, once seen and given an opportunity - even a sniff of playing with the big girls - is

where the hard work and determination begins. There are extra fitness sessions, skill sessions, gym sessions, preparing yourself mentally that all combine to separate those with natural talent to those that have a hard working attitude.”

A shooter, Jessica put in the hard yards, and soon found herself in the shooting circle for the Flames.

She harboured dreams of becoming a Silver Fern one day, but she also had dreams in terms of an after-sport career.

“As I grew older it was also a passion of mine to get a law and commerce degree at the University of Canterbury and as both required a huge commitment I went down the career pathway.

“In those days there was very little payment to play netball even if you represented New Zealand. Trying to stay in premium fitness, training, travelling and sending weekly reports to coaching staff was full-on and this added on top of my full studies

workload was tough.”

Today, the game has changed a lot. The introduction of the transTasman ANZ Championship had been great for the sport, and although Jessica hasn’t watched as much of it as she’d like to, she’s looking forward to catching some Melbourne Vixens’ home games.

“Now working for ANZ I have an extra incentive to go and support,” she said.

She no longer plays netball, not even socially – anyone who knows her knows that even in a social game her competitive side would come out. So she hasn’t got any plans of getting on the court any time soon.

“There have been a number of injuries over the years and the body deserves a break I think and with that I am enjoying exploring a new city and getting on top of a new job.”

Netball could play a role in her future though, if she’s to follow in her mum – Anne Marie’s – footsteps, as an umpire.

“Mum has been an amazing

influence on my sporting career over the years and she certainly is well respected in the netball and wider community.

“If I could be even half as good as she was with a whistle I would definitely consider taking it up in the future.”

Jessica’s future, for now, involves living in Australia, but who knows where she’ll end up in the future.

“I do have many goals in my life but none of those are location specific.

“Australia is where I am continuing to build my life and networks but wherever my family is I will always return, even if just for a visit, and that is New Zealand. I’m lucky I’m only a quick plane ride away.”

She’s living the single-girl life in Australia, and loving it, but if the right person came along she’d happily settle down – so long as they pass the test.

“I am single and if there are any suitors ... feel free to submit an application with my dad.”

W

hen elderly people are being told they’ll never make the elective surgery list, it’s clear New Zealand’s health care system has sunk to a new low.

Horror stories abound of people being not only refused a place on a waiting list but also being refused an assessment. If you’re over 70 you’re basically being told to put up and shut up.

A new underclass has been created. The people who’ve spent their working lives paying taxes, raising families, doing their bit for God and country, suddenly become valueless once they retire.

The elderly are truly New Zealand’s invisible people.

Health is a money game, always has been, but the gulf between those who receive life improving surgery and those who do not is now wider than just money. Age has become the second wedge.

Thousands will now spend their twilight years immobile because they’ve been denied joint replacement surgery, others will spend their days in a pain relief drugged haze and yet others will plunge into depression at the prospect of losing their quality of life.

Yes, joint replacement surgery is expensive, but ask anyone who has had a knee or hip replaced and they’ll tell you it’s life changing.

Waiting lists are a fact of life when it comes to surgery in New Zealand and most people accept that. What is not acceptable is that those waiting lists continue to grow out of control and now appear to have some unwritten rules that put age as a criteria before pain and disability.

Most on superannuation cannot afford health insurance, it’s often the first thing to go when you cease to be a wage earner.

Unfortunately, after paying premiums for years, at the very time in their lives when they need to call on their insurance it’s been cancelled. A happy pay day for the insurer, a bitter pill for the once-insured.

What the health funders fail to realise is that what they refuse to pay out for surgery they will end up paying – and more – for possibly 20 to 30 years in ongoing health care costs for people disabled by conditions that could have been treated quite simply by one-off surgery.

YOUR VIEW Council control Friday’s Guardian carried these remarks from the mayor – “Even with the councilcontrolled organisation model the council does not have absolute control over the Ashburton Art Gallery and Grow Mid Canterbury”.

The truth is that the council has absolutely NO CONTROL over the art gallery.

When I enquired previously about visitor numbers, donations and other matters, I was advised by the council representative that the gallery was not obliged to answer questions from the council or anyone else!

What does the council-controlled organisation model do?

The art gallery sits rent-free at the council’s expense, it costs ratepayers over $350,000 in wages – and is not fully answerable to the council! This is ridiculous!

If the council would pay me $350,000 a year I would gladly set up a team to run a council-controlled dis-organisation model to look after ratepayers’ interests and would even be answerable to the council.

fter the synthetic excitement created by scoopcrazed media anticipating the “explosive” – they hoped – outcome of moderator Miriam Dean’s assessment of the Christchurch Cathedral impasse, the dampest of damp squibs she offered has led to a debilitating anti-climax and crippling inertia.

In the weeks since the proclamation was brought down from the mountain almost all the dust that had lain for so long on the ruins and been briefly disturbed by the prospect of action has gratefully re-settled.

Once again, comfortable uncertainty prevails. Claim, counter-claim and compromise fill the air.

Resigned to the interminable lack of progress on their broken building, this latest non-development in the saga – despite the apparently joyful excitement of the mayor – sees the citizens, heads bent as they battle incessant summer winds, pass by on the other side.

Yet another report is promised “as soon as” April 2016, but that has not really enthused us who are faced by the wreck every day.

Even so, the promise of another report in the pipeline gives us something to hang our coats and hopes on as we stumble, reluctantly, into the year ahead.

The immediate issue remains precisely as it has since the start of the imbroglio, five long years ago: to repair or re-build, though it is has to be said those words are open to interpretation.

In a situation like this I am inclined to take note of the opinions of some of the people with which I might agree.

Police shoot man in fake explosives vest A man wearing a fake explosives vest and wielding a butcher knife was shot to death by police outside a Paris police station yesterday, jolting an already anxious French capital with a new dose of fear as the nation grimly marked a year of terror that started with the newsroom massacre at the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper.

The assailant — who shouted “Allahu akbar!” or “God is great!”— as he waved the knife at officers, was carrying a document with an emblem of the Islamic State group and “an unequivocal claim of responsibility in Arabic,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack at Charlie Hebdo and on a kosher grocery store three days later that killed 17 people a year ago. The Islamic State group also claimed the November attacks on Paris cafes, restaurants, a sports stadium and a music hall that killed 130 people.

The latest attempted attack shortly before noon in Paris’ multi-ethnic Goutte d’Or neighbourhood came almost one year to the minute after two Islamic extremists burst into the offices of Charlie Hebdo, killing 11 people. Just moments earlier, President Francois Hollande had paid respects to fallen security forces — three of whom were killed last year in terrorist violence — saluting their valour in protecting “this way of life, the one that terrorists want to attack.”

The fallen were killed “so that we can live free,” Hollande said, describing the November attacks as “acts of war”.

But there was no reprieve for France.

Scores of police descended yesterday on the northern neighbourhood that was the site of the attempted attack, blocking it off to pedestrians and ordering shops to close. Metro stations in the area, which is not far from the Montmartre district that is home to the Sacre Coeur Cathe-

dral, were closed and buses halted, leaving scores of residents, including many elderly, to walk long distances only to find they could not get into their homes.

“It’s like the Charlie Hebdo affair isn’t over,” said Nora Borrias, a 27-year-old waiting for her barricaded street to reopen. She said she no longer feels a sense of safety.

Video shot from a window above the station and provided to The Associated Press showed the suspect’s body lying on the ground in a pool of blood as a sniffer dog was called in to check the body, along with a bombdetecting robot. More video aired later on iTele TV showed a police explosives specialist cutting open the dead man’s jacket to check for live explosives.

Alexis Mukenge, who witnessed the shooting, told iTele that police shouted, “Stop! Move back!” before firing twice at the man, who immediately fell to the ground.

Wildfires raze homes Wildfires blazing out of control in Western Australia state had destroyed around 95 homes in a single township and continued to threaten other communities, an official said yesterday. Three people were unaccounted for and four firefighters had sustained minor injuries in battling the blazes that had scorched 50,000 hectares of woods and farmland since it was ignited by lightning strikes on Wednesday, Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said. Stress testers Buying or selling a home is more stressful than having a child, changing jobs or getting married, a British survey has found. About seven in 10 who have bought or sold a house had found it stressful, according to the research from Which? Mortgage Advisers. A divorce was the only major life event in the survey which people considered to be more distressing than buying or selling a property, with nearly eight in 10 (78 per cent) people surveyed who had been divorced saying they found the process stressful. Nearly 2000 people took part in the survey who had either bought or sold a house in the previous five years.

Killer executed Oscar Ray Bolin, who was convicted of killing three women then married a member of his defence team while on death row, has been executed in Florida.

Governor Rick Scott’s office said Bolin was pronounced dead by lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Starke. The scheduled execution time was delayed until the US Supreme Court rejected Bolin’s final appeal.

Staff have long wait on future

BY JONATHAN UNDERHILL The receivers of Dick Smith Holdings have told employees it may take six-to-eight weeks to determine if the consumer electronics chain can be sold as a going concern.

“We are immediately seeking a sale of the business as a going concern and advertisements will appear in the national newspapers shortly,” James Stewart of Ferrier Hodgson said in the circular to employees in Australia and New Zealand.

In the meantime, workers would stay on under the same terms and conditions, with wages paid as usual in the next payroll, he said.

In the event of a going-concern

sale, the receivers “will endeavour to ensure” employees can transfer their entitlements to the purchaser.

The circular says workers at the 393-store retailer must have written authority from the receivers for activities including placing orders or accepting deliveries for goods and services, entering into commitments with suppliers or customers, incurring debts or pledging assets of the company, making payments, agreeing to any compromise or arrangement including set-offs with debtors or creditors, or returning goods to suppliers.

Stewart also reminded Dick Smith employees that every invoice, order for goods or other document must have have the

words “in receivership” after the company name.

Dick Smith’s shares were suspended from trading on the ASX after its banking syndicate withdrew support and put the com-

pany in receivership.

The stock last traded at 35.5 Australian cents on the ASX, having tumbled 84 per cent from the $A2.20-a-share Anchorage Capital Partners set for its initial pub-

lic offering in 2013.

It bought Dick Smith from Woolworths in 2012, in a deal reportedly valued at about $A115 million, before selling down in 2013 in an IPO that valued the company at $A520.3 million. Anchorage sold its remaining 20 per cent in September 2014 for about $A2.22 a share.

Dick Smith chairman Rob Murray said this week that while the company had explored alternative funding, “directors formed the view that any success in obtaining alternative funding would not have been sufficiently timely to support short-term funding requirements and allow the company to order required inventory during the next four-to-six wee ks.”

Ultra low home loan rate axed SBS bank has dropped its ultra low 3.99 per cent one year fixed home loan rate pushing the cheapest rate borrowers can get back over 4 per cent.

The bank launched the cut-rate offer in November as part of a rebrand and push into Auckland and other parts of the country outside its Southland home base.

But its website now states its current one year special rate as 4.35 per cent.

Karen Tatterson, a mortgage broker at Loan Market, said the rate was only ever going to be available for a limited time and she had been notified of the change.

“I don’t think it was deliberately done over the holidays. I think they planned to do it for just six or

eight weeks.” According to interest.co.nz the lowest one year rate available is now through HSBC at 4.25 per cent.

Tatterson said she believed SBS had got a bit of traction from offering the special as not many other banks had been prepared to match it.

“In some cases they did, but others were not, which is always what happens.”

Tatterson said while a few other banks had dropped special rates over the Christmas break she expected rates to stabilise around the low fours for the next six to 12 months.

There was some expectation before Christmas that banks would increase their longer fixed term

home loans rates in response to the US Federal Reserve increasing its official cash rate for the first time in nine years on December 17 .

But Tatterson said there had been little reaction to that so far.

“I believe the banks are happy at that level, they are still making money so there’s no need for them to increase rates.

Tatterson said there had been a massive rush to get loan approvals completed before Christmas but the holiday period had been typically quiet.

“I’ve had a couple of purchases already this year but it’s been no different to what I would normally expect.”

New Zealand shares continue to slide New Zealand shares fell for a fourth day yesterday as fears over China’s economy continue to cloud global markets, sapping investor appetite for riskier assets such as equities.

The S&P/NZX 50 index dropped 1.4 per cent to 6125.73 at midday in Wellington, extending its decline this week to 3.1 per cent.

The local market continued its

downward run after Thursday’s suspension of trading on Chinese stock markets led to another drop on Wall Street.

Fears about the strength of China’s economy hit the local market in two ways: through investor sentiment, and through direct trade exposure.

China introduced circuit-breakers this year to try and prevent ex-

cessive sell-offs by pausing trading if a certain threshold is met, and suspending it altogether if the CSI 300 falls 7 per cent. The CSI 300, a composite of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges, has dropped almost 12 per cent this year. Regulators had planned to remove selling restrictions for major shareholders, but has since ditched those measures. - NZME

Aussies up for tough test By roB Forsaith David Warner enjoyed swinging in the rain but Australia’s vicecaptain knows there won’t be any laughing at clouds in New Zealand.

Warner’s whirlwind century on Thursday was the only highlight of an uninspiring draw that capped Australia’s three-Test series against West Indies.

Australia will aim to ramp up their bid for the No.1 Test ranking in February, when they tackle Brendon McCullum’s men on a two-Test tour.

Warner predicted the ball will be swinging and seaming all over the place during that series, as it was when Australia lost the Ashes last year.

“It’s going to be not too dissimilar to England,” Warner said.

“It’s going to be swinging conditions but I think the wickets are probably going to be a bit greener.”

Australia were skittled for just 60 at Trent Bridge last year, when paceman Stuart Broad all but grabbed the urn himself.

Facing NZ swing kings Trent Boult and Tim Southee under clouds on green seamers could be a similar test.

Regardless of the conditions it will be a world away from walloping West Indies’ pop-gun attack.

“We’ve got to go over there and play with the same intent

“We know the swinging conditions are probably going to favour them a little bit ... we’ve got to be on top of our game to

Warner’s team have no tune-up on that tour, with Cricket Australia instead scheduling a Sheffield Shield match between NSW and

WA in the NZ town of Lincoln.

However, the opener intimated that he and many of Australia’s Test stars would be more likely to take part in the simultaneous three-match ODI series.

“We’re definitely going to put our best team on the park (for ODIs in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton),” he said.

“We’re trying to win a series for our country.

“The one-day series is going to be obviously the first thing we play over there. I look back at Eden Park during the World Cup and we were quite poor there.

“That’s something we’ve got to try and be better at - winning away from home.”

Steve Smith was upbeat his side would be aptly prepared for the conditions awaiting them in the land of the long white cloud.

“There’s a lot of ways where you can replicate what you’re going to get. You can get soft balls and get them to swing, the skipper said.

“I dare say they’re going to have a bit of grass on them and they’re going to swing a little bit.

“We’re going to have to be better than we have been previously on those sorts of wickets.”

If England win or draw their ongoing series against South Africa then it is likely Warner’s team will snatch top spot on the Test rankings with a 2-0 win over the Black Caps.

Big win for Year 6s Pritchard Shield returns

Mid Canterbury notched another win at the Year 6 cricket tournament at Mandeville on Thursday, in a joint second-versus-second clash against Canterbury Country South.

Teams earn five points for a win and also receive extra points for batting throughout the full 40 overs, as well as a point per 20 runs scored, and Mid Canterbury were gunning for a big haul.

After winning the toss, Mid Canterbury skipper Devon Flannery elected to bat.

The decision proved to be an astute one with Flannery retiring on 50 not out, while Harry

Soal (17 not out) and Jack Middleton (16 not out) also contributed well as Mid Canterbury recorded 147 for 6 from their 40 overs.

In reply, Canterbury Country South got away to a solid start, before the first wicket fell at 27 runs off 6 overs.

From then on, Mid Canterbury worked tirelessly in warm conditions to take valuable wickets at key moments, restricting Canterbury Country South to 129 for 9 off 40 overs.

Senior club cricket returns today for round eight of the Pritchard Shield as Methven host Lauriston and Tech entertain Coldstream, while Allenton have a bye.

With round seven a washout, defending champions Tech were at the top of the ladder at stumps of 2015 on 15 points, followed by Lauriston, who are three points adrift in second spot and Allenton, Coldstream and Methven in third, fourth and fifth respectively.

If the last time Lauriston and Methven met is anything to go by, a close encounter can be expected between the two sides.

Jeremy Duckmanton’s team were nine wickets down when they eventually surpassed Methven’s total of 86 in the 30th over, having lost their previous two wickets with the score tied for a nail-biting finish in November.

In contrast, Tech will take confidence from their last encounter with Coldstream in round three. The defending champions inflicted a nine wicket hammering following a dismal batting display from Coldstream.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Coldstream were all out for 58, and Tech comfortably chased down the total on the first ball of the 12th over.

Both matches will begin at 12.30pm today.

Smith ‘disappointed’ Steve Smith pointed the finger at West Indies counterpart Jason Holder as the SCG dead rubber ended in a disappointing draw.

Day five of the rain-marred Test was called off at 4.50pm AEDT, with Australia on 2-176 in response to West Indies’ 330.

Skippers Smith and Holder met on Thursday morning, with the former desperate for a win that would boost Australia’s pursuit of the No.1 Test ranking. Smith pitched a scenario he thought was fair for both sides: a final-innings chase of 370 runs in 70 overs for the hosts.

“Unfortunately they didn’t come to the party ... I thought it was pretty generous,” Smith said.

Feisty India expected Australia coach Darren Lehmann says he’s expecting plenty of feistiness during the upcoming one-day series against India, starting at the WACA Ground on Tuesday. India and Australia have a history when it comes to on-field run-ins, but Lehmann is confident his squad will be able to deal with any potential confrontations. The one-day series against India features five 50-over matches, followed by three T20 fixtures. - AAP

Changes for Renegades The Melbourne Renegades have made four changes to their 13-man squad to take on the Melbourne Stars tonight in their Big Bash League derby at Etihad Stadium. With skipper Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade on Australian one-day duties, Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill comes into the Renegades’ squad for the first time this campaign. The club has also signed Victorian wicketkeeper/batsman Aaron Ayre as a replacement player for the remainder of the season. Ben McDermott and Nathan Hauritz also return to the squad.

Hamstrung Hussey Sydney Thunder remains optimistic rather than confident skipper Mike Hussey will return from injury in time for their crucial Big Bash League fixture against Brisbane Heat on Monday. Hussey was sidelined with a hamstring injury for the Thunder’s 30-run loss to Perth Scorchers at Spotless Stadium on Thursday night. Rosebowl finals

Goerges into Classic final Julia Goerges has reached the ASB Classic final, with a emphatic 6-4 6-2 victory over Tamira Paszek.

It was another outstanding display from the 27-year-old from Germany, who surprisingly is in a final of a WTA tournament for the first time in three years.

The Austrian seemed to have nothing left in the tank yesterday - her sixth match in the space of six days - and Goerges was simply irresistible.

She was constantly finding the mark with her ground strokes from the back of the court and was always impressive from the service line.

The first set of the match zipped by in 33 minutes, with the German taking advantage of the only break opportunity offered by either player.

It was a minor miracle that there was any play at all yesterday, after the mini-monsoon that swept through Auckland during the morning, but the weather cleared enough to allow a start.

There is still a possibility the final may not be staged, and joint winners declared, if ominous weather predicted arrives.

Tournament director Karl Budge had said semi-finals and finals will not be played indoors “under any circumstances” which leaves a predicament if rain continues in Auckland.

Big win for Buchanan And she did it in dramatic fashion on day one of the road cycling nationals in Hawke’s Bay. Buchanan edged two-time defending champion Jaime Nielsen by little over a second in the 23.2km test against the clock to add the time trial title to her national honours in the road race and criterium. She rode seven kilometres further than Nielsen, her track cycling teammate, after taking a wrong turn and riding the men’s course before restarting.

Mark Hunt’s next UFC appearance is set to be in Brisbane against former heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Fresh off a first-round TKO win over Antonio Silva (19-8, 1 NC) at UFC 193 in Melbourne in November, Hunt is expected to be the headline act for UFC Fight Night 84 in Brisbane on March 20. Mir, a submission specialist with an 18-10 career record, won two straight last year before dropping a unanimous decision to Andrei Arlovski (25-11, 1 NC) at UFC 191 in September.

Halberg selectors face unenviable task t’s that time of year again, when the best sport-watching brains get together to sort out the impossible task of deciding who was the very best of our sporting representatives in 2015.

As per usual, there’s no shortage of highly-deserving nominations for every gong; to be a judge in this competition you must surely have some sort of death-wish syndrome going on.

Every sport considers their champion to be more worthy than all the others, every sport thinks they have a far more wide-ranging world audience than rival codes, and should be recognised accordingly.

This year the six categories are all top-heavy with more-than admirable candidates, and whoever takes them out will do so at the expense of several equally well-credentialled competitors.

Four blokes fight it out to be Sportsman of the Year for 2015.

Dan Carter, Danny Lee, Kane Williamson and Scott Dixon are all world recognised as right on top of their game.

Scott Dixon operates in the rarified, multi-zillion dollar universe of IndyCar racing, and last year finished as champion.

He’s already picked up the Sportsman of the Year title twice, in 2008 and 2013, emphasising what an amazingly enduring talent he is.

Danny Lee had a breakthrough year, winning the coveted Greenbriar Classic, and Kane Williamson continues his inexorable charge to be one of the very best batsmen in the world, but none of them will win it.

That award will go to Daniel Carter, the man who guided the All Blacks to victory in a World Cup final, in what is after all our national game.

Now all that lot are sorted, with all the judges all suitably exhausted from their efforts, only one task remains: selecting the Supreme Halberg Award winner from that fabulous line-up.

Dan Carter’s brilliant efforts will be swallowed up by being part of the team, so it’s between the consummate might and awesome power of the All Blacks who swept all before them in a World Cup - and little Lydia Ko. And the petite wonder of the fairways will take the top gong, for the second time, accentuating (if it needed to be accentuated at all) that we have a world leader in one of the most competitive (and frustrating) sports on the planet.

But it’s actually all academic.

2015 was undoubtedly a great year for New Zealand sport, whatever flavour you favour, and the entire Halberg experience is simply a celebration of how collectively we punch way above our weight on the global stage.

Spieth and Day back It’s a new year but it seems there is more of the same in store on the PGA Tour with both Jordan Spieth and Jason Day firing unblemished rounds at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. The topranked Spieth fired a bogey-free seven-under-par 66 at Kapalua’s undulating plantation course while Day carded a three-under 70 in his return to tournament golf. With a victory in the season-opening event, Day can usurp Spieth from the top of the rankings in the pair’s ongoing jostle for golf supremacy.

Wheeler hedges his bets John Wheeler is splitting his Wellington Cup hopes this weekend.

The New Plymouth trainer will produce in-form stayer Pentathlon in today’s Listed Gallagher Marton Cup (2200m) at Awapuni, while Diamantine has headed south to tackle the Vernon And Vazey Truck Parts Kumara Gold Nuggets (1810m).

Wheeler had hoped to try and extend Pentathlon’s winning streak to five in last week’s Gr.3 City Of Auckland Cup (2400m) at Ellerslie, but withdrew the Pentire gelding after the track became rain affected.

Wheeler has opted for the Marton Cup as Pentathlon’s Gr. Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup lead-up and had no concerns that the missed Ellerslie run had impacted on his preparation for the Trentham 3200m feature.

“None at all,” he said.

“He’s pretty much right up to the mark. I always had the Marton Cup, City Of Auckland Cup or the Trentham Stakes in mind for him, but I only wanted to race him once going into the Wellington Cup.

Diamantine is in the Kumara Gold Nuggets today.

“He’s only a four-year-old.

“He’s hard fit and I don’t think he needs any more than one run.”

Pentathlon has been a big improver in past weeks, winning at New Plymouth, before scoring twice at Riccarton during New Zealand Cup week, then winning over 3200m at Trentham last month.

“I expect him to go well on Saturday, but it’s not his target race,” Wheeler said.

“Our target is the Wellington Cup and he’s right on track.

“I’d be rapt if he runs a nice race and gets to the line strongly.

“If she won stylishly, I’d probably have a go at the Wellington Cup with her. She’s a good mare,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler’s other runners at Kumara today are Runway, Habitude and Celtic Cross, while Heistheone will also race at Awapuni provided he can secure a suitable rider.

Meads Cup the target

Craig Dunlea is hoping to bring the Meads Cup back to Mid Canterbury in 2016 after being appointed as co-coach of the Hammers with James Jowesy last month.

The 39-year-old first turned out for Mid Canterbury in the 1996-97 season before embarking on a journeyed professional career that saw him play in England, Scotland and Wales, and for Otago and Southland in New Zealand.

Dunlea, who has stepped up from the assistant role to Grant Keenan, said he and Jowesy will look to continue the work of their predecessor, who is now assisting

Black Ferns’ coach Glenn Moore.

“I think last year we were in a bit of a rebuilding phase,” he said.

“Making the semi-finals, and to finish round-robin in second place wasn’t a bad effort.

“We just want to try and create a good culture and push on from there, we won’t try and change too much.”

Dunlea said he is looking forward to joining forces with Jowesy, who joins the union after coaching AS Rugby Milano in the Italian second division.

“I think we actually played against each other in Christchurch a few years back.

“He’s coached at a high level, we’ll have a catch up in the next

few weeks and define our roles,” he said.

“He’ll probably do backs and attack and I’ll do forwards and defence.

“It’s just seeing what everyone’s comfortable with.”

With the likes of promising 19-year-old centre Christian Vainerere making his senior debut last season, the former Mid Canterbury rugby development officer is hoping to help other young players make the step up, when the time is right.

“We have some really good young guys coming through, it’s just about managing it, you can’t just throw them in to the deep end,” he said.

“Heartland footy is getting

better every year.

“It is a big step up and sometimes you can knock a guy’s confidence and set them back, so it’s just about timing.”

Mid Canterbury’s hopes of a three-peat went up in smoke with a frustrating semi-final loss to Wanganui last year, but Dunlea is confident of recreating the strong camaraderie within the squad that has served the side well in recent years.

“We want to get a group of guys together working for one another, working hard, and playing a good brand of footy,” he said.

“I like guys to express themselves on the field and hopefully we’ll give the guys the confidence to do that.”

Welsh fancy their chances against All Blacks Former England centre Will Greenwood says Wales are a good chance to finally break their losing streak against the All Blacks when the two sides face off in a three-test series in June.

Writing a column of 2016 predictions for the Telegraph, Greenwood said Welsh players will be looking to impress ahead of next year’s British and Irish Lions tour.

“Eight years ago I bet my mate Simon Price that Wales wouldn’t

beat New Zealand before I turned 60 and I’m actually quite nervous about this three-test series,” wrote Greenwood, who turns 44 this year.

“New Zealand have said goodbye to a couple of hundred-cappers.

“Surely they can’t hit the ground running and be as good as they were at the Rugby World Cup? Can they?

“Warren Gatland and Wales’ players will be looking to lay

down a marker ahead of the 2017 Lions trip.”

Wales haven’t beaten the All Blacks since 1953, losing the last 26 clashes against the World Champions.

The closest they have come to breaking that drought was a 2625 defeat in 2004.

The last time they toured New Zealand in 2010 the Welsh were soundly beaten in both encounters.

The three test series begins at

Eden Park on June 11, a venue the All Blacks haven’t lost at since 1994.

Wellington and Dunedin host the second and third tests respectively.

Greenwood also predicts that Argentina will be the team to watch in the Rugby Championship with the new Super Rugby franchise, the Jaguares, giving their players, many of whom play in the national team, more time to play together.

Former All Blacks coach John Mitchell believes personal vendettas have severely tarnished his reputation in South Africa.

Mitchell has been appointed head coach of the USA Eagles for the next four years, after missing out on the Stormers’ job. Mitchell, who coached the All Blacks from 2001 to 2003, was cleared in 2012 of allegations around poor treatment of players while coaching the Lions in Super Rugby. “At the end of the day I’ve never been charged with any of the allegations. It’s only perception only. I’ve had to deal with a fair bit of politics in my time but I’m heading into an environment where there is stability above me,” Mitchell said.

Marshall joins Irish London Irish have announced the signing of Hurricanes first fiveeighth and fullback James Marshall.

Marshall, 27, will be part of the Hurricanes squad for this year’s Super Rugby campaign - it is his fourth season with them - before linking up with Irish next term.

During his career in New Zealand, Marshall also captained Taranaki to success in the National Provincial Championship. “James’ signing is a huge statement of where we want to take this team next season,” Irish head of rugby operations Glenn Delaney said.

Cooper into sevens Newly appointed Australian rugby sevens coach Andy Friend is making no secret of his interest in having Wallabies star Quade Cooper on deck for the Rio Olympics. Friend will join the team during round three of the Sevens World Series in Wellington later this month after ending a three-season stint coaching Suntory Sungoliath in the Japanese Top League. Cooper has been earmarked to make his international sevens debut in either Wellington or round four of the World Series in Sydney on February 6-7.

aireka Croquet Club will be opening its doors to novice and experienced players alike for twilight matches on Thursday evenings for the next three months.

Twilight croquet will run from January 14 to March 3, and club secretary Audrey Leath is hoping for a good turnout to make the most of the fine summer evenings.

“Our evenings are so beautiful, it’s a lovely setting, so why not be here playing golf croquet, and encourage some new players to come along,” she said.

Mrs Leath said the strategic nature of golf croquet offers both a mental and physical workout that can be enjoyed by players of all ages and abilities.

“It’s causal, you can just come on the night and if you’re unavailable the next week, that’s fine.

“Young people, older people, everybody’s welcome,” she said.

Twilight golf croquet will begin at 6pm on Thursday at the Waireka Croquet Club lawns.

Liverpool injury-hit Liverpool will be without Dejan Lovren, Kolo Toure and Philippe Coutinho for their FA Cup thirdround match at fourth-tier Exeter City. In addition to our current workload we have recently won several major projects covering the next two years in both civil and sub division construction and have the following positions available.

Civil Manager

Roller Operator

Ideally, suitable candidates will have worked their way through the ranks and gained valuable experience within the field with a new focus to enter into the management world, to lead, mentor and progress our current workforce and contracts we engage in.

Experienced Roller Operator required to join our roading crew, must have experience in compaction and road finishing and have class 1, W & R licences.

Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of civil techniques and processes including experience working with civil construction plant and equipment.

A good understanding of NZS 3910 conditions of contract including contract requirements, deadlines and expectations.

Able to review and relay contract requirements from plans, specifications and schedules and have a strong Health & Safety focus.

Moxy Driver Experienced driver for our bulk earthworks division. Class 4 licence and ‘can do’ attitude required.

Class 4 Truck Driver Looking for drivers who take pride in their truck, have experience in spreading and a local knowledge of quarries.

Class 4 licence necessary. WTR an advantage.

Civil Construction Labourers

Grader Operator - $30-$35per hour

Looking for labourers with experience within the industry with any of the following skills: footpath construction, kerb and channel prep, or asphalt prep.

The ‘Rock Star’ we are looking for will be a team leader with a ‘can do’ attitude, must have experience in roading construction and earthworks.

Must have class 1 licence, WTR an advantage.

Final trim experience with an eye for detail and a strong focus on delivering a quality product on time.

Workshop Engineer

Must have relevant licences.

We require an Engineer to join our maintenance team and a looking for someone who has had experience working with heavy plant and equipment.

Company vehicle supplied for this role.

Must be certified welder, Class 1 licence, WTR and mechanical background an advantage.

Excavator Operator - 20ton Excavator Bulk earthworks experience essential, must be able to work to levels and have an eye for detail.

Landscape Labourers

Must take pride in his or her plant and an ability to communicate clearly and complete paperwork accurately.

Must have proven hard landscaping experience - in paving, retaining walls, boxing of concrete works, lawn prep and be physically fit.

Company vehicle supplied with this role.

Have a clean full drivers licence, extra licences such as class 2, wheels, tracks and rollers would be a big, big advantage.

Water Cart Driver

This is for experienced landscapers only so those who do not have the relevant years of experience need not apply.

Required to join our busy roading team, must have class 4, W & R licences.

Wednesday was a day to remember for Mid Canterbury’s Richard Print, with the all-rounder claiming his 100th representative wicket on his 50th senior appearance.

Mid Canterbury eventually fell to a 49-run loss to the New South Wales Emu Colts - an invitational team made up of the finest under-21 players in northern New South Wales.

After failing to reach 100 wickets during Mid Canterbury’s Hawke Cup loss to South Canterbury in November, Print took little time to reach the milestone against the Australians.

The 28-year-old removed Emus’ opener Michael Dawson for 14 to join an elite group of Mid Canter-

bury players on triple figures, and then moved on to 101 with the dismissal of Dean Mills (8).

“It was great, beautiful, it was the best I’ve bowled for a long time.

“It just pitched up and he (Dawson) was caught at second slip,” he said.

“Achieving something for Mid Canterbury is what I like doing.

“I like getting better every game.”

Mid Canterbury will entertain the Canterbury Senior Performance Squad at the Ashburton Domain Oval tomorrow in their last hit-out before returning to Hawke Cup duty on January 16 against Southland.

“I just want to keep going until my body can’t take it any more.

“It’s not easy fast bowling,” he said.
