Two victims of smash and grabs

The manager of an Ashburton dairy is “angry and frustrated” after being targeted by burglars for the second time in one month.

Ashburton police are investigating after two businesses were broken into in the early hours of yesterday morning, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Both Sunny’s Discount Dairy and Hotel Ashburton Super Liquor had their front windows smashed by burglars, and merchandise was taken from both stores.

The burglaries follow a string of similar incidents in December when three Mid Canterbury businesses were targeted, including Sunny’s Discount Dairy.

The burglaries have left Sunny’s Discount Dairy manager Rakesh Bandi “disturbed”.

“I’m very frustrated,” he said.

“It’s nonsensical.”

Mr Bandi said he believed the burglars may have been scared off by passing cars, as they only took a small amount of food during the break in.

According to Mr Bandi, nobody had been arrested for the previous burglary in December.

Despite his anger over the burglaries, Mr Bandi said members of the community had been very supportive, and had helped to clean up the shattered glass.

Hotel Ashburton Super Liquor also fell victim to burglars yesterday, who smashed a front window and made off with about $500 worth of merchandise.

Lorde does summer just like other teens She’s won a Grammy and counts Taylor Swift as a friend, but that hasn’t made Lorde any less of a Kiwi teen.

Like hordes of other holidaymakers around the country, the Takapuna-based pop star – who celebrated her 18th birthday in November – has made the most of the hot summer weather. Lorde posted several photos on Instagram of her summer trips – including one of her showing off an inflatable $10 Mitre 10 tube on the shores of Lake Taupo, near Turangi.

It is understood she has family in the area, including grandparents and an aunt. One of the photos at the lake was captioned: “The perfect day.” It is believed to have been taken by her photographer boyfriend James Lowe.

Another one showed an iced chocolate.

Tennis stars upstaged Super Teddy, a jack russell/norfolk terrier/ miniature schnauzer cross, stole the heart of Venus Williams when he brought her racket on to court. Oscar, Ted and Super Teddy are the three burly ball-boys who charmed Venus Williams. The trio were part of an ASB Classic exhibition match on Saturday between the American star and Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.

Specially trained to be ballboys, Oscar, Ted and Super Teddy were clearly crowd favourites as they strutted their stuff in their sweatbands.

Like all diligent ball-boys, the dogs waited patiently at designated spots by the net – ensuring any stray ball was lapped up quickly and efficiently. While the match went relatively smoothly, there was the odd canine-related hiccup. Oscar, an eight-year-old bull mastiff, appeared to miss the idea of catch and release. His penchant for the ball meant it was eventually covered in dog slobber, but this didn’t seem to faze Williams and Kuznetsova who played on. Williams, who has a grey Havanese called Harold, struck up a special bond with Super Teddy, an eight-year-old jack russell/norfolk terrier/miniature schnauzer cross, even using a racket brought on to court by him.

Jolie, Pitt to meet Pope Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will reportedly fly to Italy this month for a special meeting with Pope Francis. The Hollywood couple has organised a “VIP meet-and-greet” with the Pontiff at the Vatican and have already sent a security team to the city to prepare for their arrival later this month, according to UsWeekly magazine. The stars do not consider themselves religious but wanted to take time out of their busy awards season schedule to meet with the leader of the Catholic Church because they “admire” his work and “like the Pope’s message”.

Monster cone too daunting Northland’s contender for the world’s biggest icecream on a normal cone has reported a lot of interest but no takers for its latest creation. Staff at Waipapa’s State Highway 10 Seafood Takeaways were at the ready after the Herald revealed the shop’s challenge to eat all of its 15-scoop monster, called the Highway 10 To Hell. However, owner Mike Pickett said Wednesday night he had been “flat out” serving treats other than his biggest creation, which weighs in at 2.85kg and is priced at $18.60.

“No-one tried today – they’re not brave enough,” he said. “Previously, we’ve had two attempts at the 15-scoop and both failed.” The next-biggest cone is the 10-scoop, 1.9kg Death By Ice Cream, at $12.20.

“No big ones today, people were chasing the little fellas.” Previously, singer Stan Walker finished the Death By Ice Cream in each of two visits and Maori All Black Joe Royal also finished it, to claim the prize of a free meal.

Crowe finds ally in Streep Hollywood star Meryl Streep has supported Russell Crowe’s view that ageing actresses should not expect to be given roles that are not suited to their age. Crowe caused a stir when he said in an interview that older women should accept they were not right for a role as an “ingenue”, in the same way that male stars had to take roles which were appropriate for their age. Perfect mix for dry spell

No rain, high temperatures, low humidity and wind make the perfect cocktail that’s creating a drier than normal summer for the Ashburton District, says Niwa meteorologist Chris Brandolino.

While the district is not in drought, dryland soil moisture levels are now at, or below wilting point, he said.

At Niwa’s Winchmore recording site, fully saturated soil has a reading of 34 per cent; at December 30 soil in that area had a reading of 10 per cent.

Eight days, ranging from very hot to moderate temperatures and virtually no rain were likely to have pushed readings below the 9 per cent wilting level, he said.

Last year’s highest soil moisture level was recorded in July

at 32 per cent. Since then soil moisture deficit levels had been steadily dropping, Mr Brandolino said.

Looking ahead, the news was unlikely to get better for farmers, he said.

“Over the next five to seven days there is no widespread, significant rain expected and over the next three months rainfall is predicted to be near or below normal.”

And that meant there was a 50 per cent chance that soil moisture levels along the east coast of the South Island would remain below normal over those three months, Mr Brandolino said.

The district headed into the new year after a December where rainfall was between 50 to 97 per cent below normal.

Niwa is forecasting temperatures that are likely to be in the

near or above average range, rainfall that will be near or below normal and soil moisture levels and river flows that are most likely to be below the normal range.

Ashburton’s local recorder, Graham’s Weather Station shows that just 3.5mm of rain has fallen in the urban area over the past seven days.

In December there was 38mm of rain.

‘It’s situation normal’

Hinds farmer Ross Chisnall knows about farming for dry conditions.

He’s a rarity today, a sheep farmer with an unirrigated farm, but he says he’s not overly concerned about the current big dry.

Years of experience means you’re always prepared with a good stock of winter feed in case the rains don’t come, he said.

“Yes, the soil is dry. When you’re ploughing there’s dust and yes I’d rather it rained but I’d rather it was dry now than in February and March when we’re sowing winter feed.

“We do need a decent rain, if we get to mid-February and we haven’t had it we’ll be looking at problems,” Mr Chisnall said.

He describes the current conditions as normal, but a bit more intense than usual for this time of the year.

Anyone who’s farmed the Ashburton District for a few years understands that dry conditions are the norm during January and February, he said.

The past few years had

seen better than average summer conditions on the back of warmer winters but this year farmers were seeing a return to what most considered normal summer conditions.

Conditions had, however, gone backwards and become a bit more intense since Christmas, Mr Chisnall said.

He runs 1750 breeding ewes and 900 ewe lambs and has good stocks of winter feed, but anticipates rather than waiting until winter, he’ll be feeding out within a couple of weeks.

“It’s just a case of wait and see. With the pastures we’ve got here, half an inch of rain would give a pretty good response.”

For years Stuart Wilson was a dryland farmer but today his property is irrigated.

He recalls years when paddocks started to dry off in mid November and by Christmas they were bone dry.

“We haven’t had a normal summer here for years; this is just a normal dry period,” he said.

Dry conditions also impacted on farmers with irrigation, with some schemes now on restrictions, Mr Wilson said.

One of the telling signs of a hot, dry summer, a total lack of water in the Ashburton River at Digby’s Bridge.

Mr Turnbull could not confirm yesterday whether the most recent burglaries were related.

Police praise tip-off call The quick actions of a member of the public has led to three arrests after an incident in Ashburton on Tuesday.

Ashburton’s top cop has praised the member of the public, who contacted police when they observed three unknown males entering an East street property in Ashburton on Tuesday.

Police officers have since located and arrested three local males aged 16, 19 and 20 years old.

Ashburton police Senior Ser-

geant Scott Banfield said the 16 and 19 year olds were each given a warning by police for unlawfully being on the property.

The 20 year old man will appear in the Ashburton District Court on January 19 on a number of charges, including being unlawfully on the property.

“We would like to thank the community minded Ashburton resident for taking the time to alert police to the suspicious activity at a neighbouring property,” Mr Banfield said.

“The prompt reporting of this suspicious activity allowed officers to reach the scene before anyone tried to gain entry to any buildings.”

Ashburton police Sergeant Bryan Ennis told the Guardian yesterday that people should call police if they see any suspicious behaviour, even if they think it is minor.

“It does pay to ring if they see anything suspicious, by all means,” he said.

“We’d rather go and find out that it’s nothing, than find out

that it could have been something if someone had rung.”

Canterbury police have urged members of the community to look out for each other and report any suspicious activity or unknown people on neighbouring properties to police straight away.

They are also advising people to secure any tools in a locked shed when they have finished using them, to prevent “opportunistic” burglars from using them to gain entry to any buildings on properties.

Old furniture gets an up-to-date look

Coffee tables, dressers, drawers, bowls, stools, apple boxes and a wine rack were just a few of the furniture pieces transformed and updated this week in day two of the distressed furniture course at the Methven Summer School.

Nine students, under the instruction of experienced tutors Suzy McPherson and Amanda Beswick, learned to distress furniture pieces using chalk paint.

The technique transformed their dated or standard furniture into pieces with a modern edge.

Tutor, Ms Beswick from Leeston, said students were taught the technique directly onto their own furniture pieces brought to class.

They also learned to decoupage stone which changed plain rocks into stylish art.

Distressing furniture gave the finished work a French look, she said.

Among the students was Donna Bell, of Invercargill. She was a first timer to the Summer School but a regular to Methven with friends in the district.

During the course she had distressed a serving tray (picked up from an opportunity shop), a mirror, a stool and a chair.

Ms Bell had changed the serving tray from a standard wood piece to funky and stylish especially with the addition of a 1963 stencil.

She had included detailed floral stencil work on some of the other pieces.

Ms Beswick said distressed furniture gave hand-me-down or industrial pieces a new look.

Christchurch’s tight-knit Fijian Indian community is looking to rally around the parents of a 1-year-old baby girl who died after suffering serious head injuries while in the care of a babysitter.

A homicide investigation has been launched after the infant died at Christchurch Hospital,

Retiree big winner A retired truck driver from south Auckland has claimed a $10.7 million prize in last Saturday’s Lotto. The Pukekohe resident wished to remain anonymous, said a Lotto spokeswoman. The ticket was a gift from a friend, who had bought three tickets from Countdown Pukekohe and gave one to each of her two friends.

The gift ticket, with the intended owners’ initials on it, won the Powerball first division of $10.249m and $500,000 from Lotto’s first division. The Lotto spokeswoman said the winner laughed: “The first thing I’m going to buy is some new jandals. It’s about time I threw these ones away. But other than that, I have no idea.”

Hit-and-run?

Police are urging witnesses to come forward after a 65-year-old woman was injured in a potential hit and run incident in Coromandel on Wednesday night. The woman was found by family members on State Highway 25, Tairua Road, near the Whangamata sewage treatment ponds about 10pm, police said. She suffered moderate injuries and was flown to Waikato Hospital. Waikato district road policing manager Inspector Freda Grace said police had not yet determined how the woman suffered the injuries. “At this point we are working to piece together what has occurred and we haven’t ruled out that she may have been struck by a vehicle.”

Homicide investigation after baby girl dies

A 26-year-old motorcyclist has been killed in a crash on a beach on the Kapiti Coast. A beach walker found the man’s body next to his motorcycle near the edge of the surf on Paekakariki Beach near Queen Elizabeth Park just after 7.10am yesterday, Inspector Marc Clausen said. The rider, from Paekakariki, was still wearing his helmet but it was not yet known what caused the crash. The man was believed to be the partner of a woman who called police to report he had not returned from a motorcycle ride last night in the same area.

Thief in wardrobe A man wanted by police in relation to a number of burglaries was found hiding in a wardrobe in a Whangarei house. Northland police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said the 23-year-old had been avoiding police after a series of burglaries in which a boat and quad bikes were stolen. He was discovered by police in the wardrobe of a Raumanga house. A man appeared in the Whangarei District Court on four charges of burglary, one charge of theft of a motor vehicle and one of theft.

‘No safe amount of alcohol’

If you feel you need to use a personal breathalyser, you shouldn’t be driving.

That’s the message from Canterbury police, who are warning people not to rely on the devices following a pre-Christmas spike in sales in Mid Canterbury.

An Ashburton retailer told the Guardian this week that his

store had sold out of the devices leading up to Christmas, and he suspected his supplier had sold out as well.

The spike in popularity follows the introduction of stricter drink driving laws in December.

However, a Canterbury police spokesperson said while personal breathalysers may provide a guide, they were not calibrated

to the standards required of police equipment where the results could be used as evidence in court.

“Police will certainly not accept their use as an excuse if someone is caught exceeding breath or blood alcohol levels,” the spokesperson said.

“Alcohol affects everyone differently, and our message is that there is no “safe” amount of al-

cohol to drink before driving.”

For one local retailer, the increased interest in the devices had proved good for business.

Ashburton Repco branch manager Paul James said there had “definitely” been an increase in sales of breathalysers in the lead up to Christmas, and he was surprised by the number of business owners buying them for their staff.

Despite the popularity of the devices, Ashburton Trust chief executive Giles Beal said this week that none of the Trust’s venues sold the products, or would consider selling them.

Mr Beal said breathalysers needed to be calibrated regularly to be accurate, and the Trust would be on “tenuous ground” if it started advising people how much they could drink.

Cat burglar

Principal will miss clean air of Mid Canterbury

It’s a tale of two kitties.

Cuddles, the feline hunter, loves bringing home half-dead rabbits and rodents.

Not that unusual for a cat.

But his housemate Charlie is anything but usual.

A 5-year-old pure-bred Birman, he has a penchant for pilfering fluffy items from around his neighbourhood in Carlyle Rd, Mosgiel.

Over the past year, the blueeyed cat burglar has acquired quite the eclectic stash, including a feather boa, a neck warmer, a dog rope, a black wig, fluffy toys and a pair of rugby socks.

Exasperated owner Tracey Abernethy said Charlie began his covert actions early last year, bringing home an item almost every week.

“I have a whole bag of stuff and I thought I will have to go around all the neighbours to confess.

Limiting his booty was the fact Charlie had to jump a fence and then bring any pilfered items through his catdoor.

Mrs Abernethy believed he might be breaking into homes and targeting children’s bedrooms, given the amount of soft toys recovered.

“I am getting a bit embarrassed now.” Charlie declined to comment.

Hinds School will be missing a familiar face this year.

Principal Eric Davis finished his time at the school last month, after three years in the top job.

Former Strath-Taieri School principal Vicki McIntyre took over the role this month.

Mr Davis said teachers having quality discussions about teaching and learning and working with a Board of Trustees that has children’s learning as their motivation were two of his fondest memories of the school.

He said he was looking forward to a few weeks of rest and relaxation, after 33 years of working as a principal at a variety of schools, but he would still miss the school.

“At Hinds we have 150 hectares of room so the freedom, grass and clear air of Mid Canterbury make it a great place to work,” he said.

Mr Davis said he went to teachers’ college as an 18-yearold because he loved kids, and 45 years later he was leaving

that part of the profession still loving kids.

“A friend said to me recently that when one leaves a place, their leaving leaves the same

sort of hole that one leaves when one takes his hand out of a bucket of water,” he said.

“And that’s okay because I came here wanting to give

something to education and know that I have and while we haven’t changed the world, for one or two kids we have made it a better place.”

Money taken out of town

Retailer Terry McNab is fed up with watching money march out of town on the back of school stationery orders.

Each year schools provide students with stationery lists and each year some encourage parents to buy that stationery through bulk providers out of town. And that, Mr McNab said, was carving a big slice out of local retailers’ incomes.

“I know parents have the option, but I find it difficult to understand why they’d send

orders out of town when spending money keeps business in town – and we’re no dearer.

“Maybe people don’t realise their online orders are coming out of Auckland,” he said.

Like most retailers who ran parallel online and in-shop businesses, Mr McNab said he offered special stationery deals online and ran those same deals in-store alongside other options.

“The product I put online is the one I believe is the greatest value for money.”

For book and stationery retailers, having an online store was the new normal. The market was now quite tough in his sector, particularly for independent booksellers who didn’t have the benefits of group buying or who chose not to use the internet, he said.

A large independent book retailer recently closed its doors in Blenheim citing a drop in sales due to competition from the internet for creating a business environment that was no longer economic. Another Blenheim bookseller shut up

shop last year.

Mr McNab said that running a dual business was now a fact of life for many retailers and for most it had become one of the keys that ensured they remained in business.

He’s watched his online business grow, not only for stationery but also for a wide range of books.

“It’s just something we have to go with today but it does create quite a lot of work. The big thing that’s surprised me is the time that people are online ordering – 2am or 3am.”

Following her musical dreams at university

An off-duty police officer rushed to the aid of a 5-year-old girl who suffered a seizure while swimming at a Northland beach yesterday.

Police said they were called to the incident at Oke Bay at 1pm. When police arrived they found the girl had suffered from a seizure while in the water. When police arrived, the Coastguard was performing CPR on the young girl. Police said the girl was resuscitated and they believed dehydration was the cause of her seizure. The young girl was airlifted by helicopter to Whangarei Hospital.

Search for snorkeller The family of a 25-year-old man who went missing while snorkelling in Northland yesterday are scouring the beach for any sign of him. Olivia Brown has a passion for music.

The 18-year-old soprano has been involved with music for most of her life and said she loves everything about it.

Her first experience with singing was at Ashburton Borough School, when she was in the school choir.

“I didn’t get into special choir though,” she joked.

Olivia went on to win a singing competition at the school, and said it made her think that maybe singing could be something to continue with.

“I was not expecting [the win] at all,” she said.

It was a smart decision Miss Brown made, to pursue singing. After finishing primary school she went on to Mount Hutt College and sang in the school’s choir, before moving to Ashburton College in Year 12.

There, Miss Brown was a member of the Ashburton College Phoenix Chorus and also took music as a subject.

Not only is she heavily involved with music through her education, she is just as involved outside of school too.

Miss Brown has taken singing lessons from Jo Castelow for 10 years and music theory lessons from Anglea Cresswell for two years.

She doesn’t just take lessons though, she sits exams too.

Miss Brown has sat the Trinity Guild Hall examinations in singing and music theory from grade one, right through to grade eight.

She passed grades one through four, as well as six, with merit and was awarded distinction for grades five, seven and eight.

Isaac Calmer – aka Isaac Culmer, Isaac James or James Culmer – used the Facebook name “Sumwone Speshal” while allegedly advertising a Mac Book Pro for sale. Wreckage to be lifted

Miss Brown said the exam can be sat for any instrument and the qualification is one that is internationally recognised.

She has also won her fair share of awards, last year she became the most recent recipient of the Ashburton Musical Club scholarship, and won four trophies at the Ashburton Society of Performing Arts competitions.

At the Ashburton College Year 13 awards ceremony, she was awarded top of music, won the Vocal Contribution to Music award, the Masonic Lodge scholarship and the Mid Canterbury Choir scholarship.

Miss Brown said she enjoyed school, with music and history being her favourite subjects.

Outside of school, she par-

ticipates in the Summer Singing School and sings at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

To keep her voice in tiptop shape she said she practices scales and warm-ups and sight-sings – the art of singing straight from a sheet of music.

“I really know when I like a song, it clicks for me,” she said.

She has her idols in the music industry too – but don’t be mistaken, they aren’t young, modern-day pop singers.

Sarah Brightman is someone Miss Brown said she looks up to – a classical singer, actress, songwriter and dancer, who was once married to composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (another one of her idols).

As for her plans for the future – after finishing at Ashburton College last year, her next move is university.

She is heading off to the University of Otago to study Classical Voice Performance and Psychology.

As part of her four year performance study she will have to learn both Italian and German.

That won’t be too much of a stretch for the young songstress though, as she said she already sings and writes in Italian.

Not only this, but she has ambitions to be a music therapist.

To live out that dream she would have to attend a one year course at Victoria University – but that might not be for a while yet.

She does have dreams beyond university too – she said she would love to one day perform opera in Turkey or Italy – a goal she will work hard to achieve.

The wreckage of a crashed skydiving aircraft is due to be lifted from Lake Taupo today. A five person police dive squad working with the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) yesterday surveyed, videoed and photographed the wreckage of the aircraft after it plummeted from the sky following a suspected engine failure on Wednesday. All six skydivers, their six instructors and the pilot of Skydive Taupo’s bright-pink Pacific Aerospace 750XL were forced to abandon the plane at 2000ft, before it crashed in to the lake near Rotongaio Bay shortly before midday.

Air fares ‘too high’ Airfares should fall to reflect plummeting oil and jet fuel prices but airlines are stalling when it comes to delivering cheaper fares, consumer advocates say. The price of crude oil has plunged to near a six-year low. Airlines say the issue is complex, but a major travel agency is frustrated airlines aren’t yet slashing average fares. Learn to swim classes on again

The Ashburton Community Pool Learn to Swim holiday programme is in full swing.

More than 280 Mid Canterbury kids have enrolled so far, although there are still vacancies.

Yesterday Learn To Swim coordinator Stacey Hoets said she was pleased with the numbers, which were up on last year’s 250.

The programme, which began earlier this week, offers group sessions, which run daily for the next three weeks and cater to swimmers of all levels – from pre-schoolers who are learning to put their heads under water, to school children who want to perfect their technique.

Private lessons are to be arranged for the second and third weeks of the programme.

Seven-year-old Faith Davies was using the lessons to gain more confidence with swimming.

She has swimming lessons during the school term but this week was her first time at the holiday programme.

Faith’s mum, Amanda Davies, said she wanted Faith to become familiar with water safety as it was important for kids to be comfortable and confident in and around water.

“You have to learn to swim,” she said.

Mrs Hoets said the main objective of the programme was to get children water confident, but the classes also gave children an opportunity to further their swimming and learn about water safety.

The holiday Learn to Swim programme will continue for the next three weeks before term time swimming lessons begin on February 2.

In the meantime, the pool is open to the public over the school holiday period, while the smaller pool is closed between 9am and 11am each day to ensure there is ample room for swimming lessons.

Happiness for Rebecca Edgar is a white coat, a microscope and the silence of a laboratory.

And for the ex-Ashburton College student, that’s exactly what she’ll be getting this year when she takes up a position as a postdoctoral scholar in molecular and cellular biochemistry at the University of Kentucky.

In the world of academia she’s known as Dr Edgar, but that title doesn’t sit easily with the modest 27 year old; she’s happiest when she’s just Becky, the young woman who dreams of making a life changing discovery in her laboratory.

For her it’s been a long road from secondary school to completing her Phd, a long road that has come with little income and a sizeable student debt. But Dr Rebecca Edgar couldn’t be happier.

“I was always interested in science and as an undergraduate, I just went with the flow really to see what I liked. I did a few microbiology papers and that really opened my eyes,” she said.

She found the path she wanted to follow, fell in love with research and steadily worked her way through a science degree with first class honours in biochemistry in 2009, winning herself a University of Otago scholarship for her masters study.

“I’ve been eight years at university and this year I have been working while I’ve tidied up my Phd; it’s a big commitment

I guess I’ve never really earned money, my student loan is big but not as big as a medical doctor’s. My first real pay cheque will be in US dollars.”

Moving to Kentucky is stepping into the unknown, but Rebecca’s working world will be one she knows well and is comfortable in, even if it is a world away from home.

“It’s hard to get a job in New Zealand without overseas experience, I went looking online and I found this. It’s a one year contract with the opportunity to extend.”

She credits three Ashburton College teachers Greg Jones, Keith Gunn and Lindsay Watson with providing the inspiration at school that would see her chase her dream.

“I’d love to go back and see them, love to go back and talk to students. When you’re in a small town you often don’t see what’s out there; for students it’s great to see what other people have gone on and done,” she said.

Looking to the future, Rebecca says that while she could become a university lecturer, her first love is research.

“I’ll definitely stay in microbiology, particularly with antibiotic resistance becoming such a problem.”

Like any scientist, Rebecca says her driver will always be the dream of finding a cure for a disease, to make a lifechanging discovery.

Hoping for some rain and soon Stu Oldham

yes are turned skyward as the warm, dry summer that holidaymakers enjoyed over Christmas threatens a difficult start to the new year for farming Mid Cantabrians.

The district is not officially in drought – it’s still some way from that – but brown front lawns and parched patches of farmland show the lack of meaningful rainfall is beginning to take its toll.

In our towns, water restrictions mean vegetable gardens wait for every second day to get a drenching from taps that, mercifully, still run water at will.

These days, such restrictions are simply part of summer.

Meanwhile, the biggest riverfed irrigation companies are operating on 25 per cent restrictions and the farms they support are preparing for more time without rain.

Dry land farmers are keeping a close eye on their wells and some have managed-down stock in anticipation of the sort of prolonged summer they have seen before.

Crops that did well from a warm, wet spring need more water to finish off and winter feed stocks might become summer feed if the dry gets much drier.

After a damp summer last year, it is easy to forget that Mid Canterbury farmers have almost always had to farm for a new year that starts hot and dry. It is the old normal.

Over many decades, targeted and often brave investment in managed, river-fed irrigation schemes has helped take the edge off predictably dusty Mid Canterbury summers.

In many respects, that investment means rain supplements the water supplied by irrigation schemes, making manageable what used to be so uncertain in the past. But that does not make the wait for rain any less anxious.

The next month-or-so will determine how many Mid Canterbury farmers – and with them, how many other Mid Canterbury businesses – go into the rest of the year.

As neighbouring South Canterbury looks set for its first drought in a decade, Mid Canterbury will hope the whole region gets the rain it needs, soon.

reckon camping could go on the list of things to do with your partner BEFORE you get married. I’m not just talking about seeing him or her without any cosmetic assistance either.

In fact camping is much like boxing in a lot of ways.

Round one starts before you even get to the camping ground. If you haven’t got a tent, then you need to agree on one of those.

Do we really need a gas cooker, couldn’t we just borrow your brother’s one?

Do we want to invest in a deluxe air bed or will one of those cheaper ones do the trick? For the record the answer to that question is most definitely invest in a good air bed.

Then the supermarket, what’s with all this food, where are we going to put the beer?

OK you’ve made it through the first couple of rounds, so far she’s only landed a couple of jabs, just glancing blows though. Although she threw a pretty good left hook after the beer comment!

Now we’re at the camping site, here’s where you really need to keep your wits about you. Putting up that tent for the first time can be that upper cut from nowhere. It’s hot, you’re sweating, just keep moving but most importantly (for blokes) listen to the instructions coming out of your corner. Make sure the only time your mouth is open is to breathe.

You’re through round six now and still feeling ok, sucking in some big ones but the tent is erected. Time to take some liquids on board? No! She lands a “the air bed isn’t gonna blow up itself ”. Now is not a good time to drop one’s guard by throwing a roundhouse

Vigils after Paris attack Cities and towns across Europe have staged vigils in solidarity with the French people after an armed rampage left at least 12 dead.

Hundreds of people, called together just hours before on social media, turned out in capitals including Berlin, London, Brussels, Madrid, Rome and Vienna to express their horror at the killings by Islamist gunmen at Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

In Sydney, bouquets were left outside the French consulate and a vigil and minute’s silence will be observed tonight in Hyde Park.

Late yesterday, about 500 people stood in silence in front of the French embassy in the German capital, opposite the Brandenburg Gate landmark, many holding lit candles or waving the blue European Union flag.

Others carried placards reading “Je suis Charlie” (I Am Charlie) - a slogan that went viral on Facebook and Twitter after the attack - and carried back issues of the weekly magazine known for its critical caricatures.

“Long live the press, long live cartoons,” a group of Germans chanted in French.

In London, a large crowd gathered at Trafalgar Square, many holding up their mobile phones showing the “Je suis Charlie” rallying cry.

Some sang the Marseillaise, the French national anthem, holding pens aloft in a symbol of press freedom.

“I heard the news this morning like everyone else and it hit me hard,” said Frenchman Nabil Nadifi, 29, who has lived

Around 150 people, most of them French, stood in silence outside the French embassy on the Piazza Farnese in the heart of Rome.

Around 500 people gathered in both Geneva and Lausanne while in the Swiss capital Bern, 200 people paid homage to the victims, according to local media reports, as Vienna and The Hague saw similar vigils.

And in Stockholm, around 70 people, many of them carrying flowers or candles, stood in silence outside the French embassy.

A 40-year-old woman who gave her name only as Veronique attended the gathering with her children.

“It was important to me to come here and to share my anger and my sorrow,” she said.

The vigils across the continent came as more than 100,000 people gathered across France to pay tribute to the victims of the massacre.

At least 35,000 people turned out in Paris, with some 20,000 more in the cities of Lyon and Toulouse, police said yesterday.

Thousands more took to the streets in cities including Bordeaux and Marseille.

Palestinians join ICC as US opposes move The Palestinians have formally joined the International Criminal Court in a move that would allow them to lodge war crimes complaints against Israel from April.

The decision drew fresh opposition from the US, which argued that the state of Palestine should not be allowed to join the ICC as it is not a “sovereign state”.

World condemns attack

from April 1 to investigate serious crimes committed in the Palestinian territories.

Sidiki Kaba, the president of the assembly of state-parties to the ICC, welcomed Palestine as the 123rd signatory of the Rome Statute, which governs the ICC. “This is a historic day for the Palestinian people,” chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat told AFP. “This marks the end of Israeli impunity.”

Erakat said ICC membership for the Palestinians “changes the balance of power in favour of justice, free-

dom, peace and international law”.

But the United States, which is not a member of the ICC, questioned the decision.

“The United States does not believe that the state of Palestine qualifies as a sovereign state and does not recognise it as such and does not believe that it is eligible to accede to the Rome statute,” said US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

It remained unclear, however, what recourse Washington would have to block the decision endorsed by Ban and the ICC’s assembly president.

In a statement posted on the ICC website, Kaba welcomed Ban’s decision and said “each ratification of the Rome Statute constitutes welcome progress towards its universality.”

The Palestinians have asked the ICC to look into possible war crimes committed during last year’s Gaza war that killed nearly 2200 Palestinians.

The Palestinian envoy to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, said a suit could also be filed over the construction of Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.

A Chinese restaurant in southeast Queensland has been shut down after a mass bout of food poisoning. More than 110 people are understood to be affected by the suspected salmonella outbreak that has led the Logan City Council to temporarily close Chin Chin Chinese Restaurant at Springwood, south of Brisbane. The council is working with Queensland Health to investigate after patrons, some of whom remain in hospital, fell ill at the weekend. The Metro South Public Health Unit suspects raw eggs, possibly used in deep-fried ice-cream, were the source of the outbreak.

Bingle case delayed The New York lawyers defending Sam Worthington and Lara Bingle from a $US10 million lawsuit say it is news to them that paparazzo Sheng Li had shoulder surgery last month. The Australian celebrity couple’s legal team told US District Court Judge Ronald Ellis it was only via media reports they heard Li had undergone a December 12 operation to attempt to repair torn tendons. Li accuses Worthington and Bingle of assaulting him in a New York street on February 23 last year and is seeking $US10 million for physical and psychological damage.

Treatment ‘promising’ Treatment combining low-dose chemotherapy and the targeted drug trastuzumab showed promise in women with early stage breast cancer of a type called HER2positive, US researchers say.

Women receiving the treatment were highly unlikely to see their cancer return, said the study in the New England Journal of Medicine, analysing a regimen that included the chemotherapy agent paclitaxel and the targeted drug under the brand name Herceptin.

Boys escape charges Two boys aged eight and nine lit a fire near a Perth primary school but will not be charged because they are too young. Arson squad detectives investigating the large scrub fire in Coolbinia on January 4 found the boys started the blaze after receiving information from the public. Police said the boys would be referred to the Juvenile and Family Fire Awareness Program run by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. They are too young to be held criminally responsible.

BY SHAWN MCAVINUE Dunedin is set to become the distribution base for a self-heating beverage, as the biggest market is expected in the South.

Hot-Can NZ Ltd managing director Craig Darling said he chose Dunedin as the distribution base for the self-heating beverages Hot-Can because it made economic sense.

“Everything is cheaper in Dunedin.”

Dunedin was near the target market, which included farmers and outdoors people, such as hunters and fishermen.

“The bigger market will be in the South Island, because the weather is a little cooler.”

The former King’s High School pupil said he decided to return to Dunedin after living overseas for 11 years.

Mr Darling bought the Australasian licence to import and sell the beverage about a year ago. About three million cans were sold in Australia in 2013.

“It’s booming and that’s a hot climate and obviously bringing it to New

Zealand, a cold climate, makes a lot of sense.”

The beverages had been on sale for five years in Australia before the three million sale milestone was reached. He predicted it would take two or three years to reach the same level in New Zealand. The “sky is the limit” for New Zealand sales targets, he said.

In New Zealand, the beverages would be for sale in several South Island supermarkets by March and would include coffee, hot chocolate, tomato soup and chicken soup.

The soups sold better than the coffee, because people had personal taste preferences for coffee, such as with sugar or skim milk.

The desired taste expectation for soup was more uniform, he said.

“Chicken soup tastes like chicken soup and tomato soup tastes like tomato soup.”

The beverages would be distributed

by Toll New Zealand and would be sold at Foodstuffs supermarkets in the South Island, such as New World.

An Australian-owned company will continue its search for gold south of Kawerau in the next few months. Silver City NZ was awarded an exploration permit last year to look for gold and silver in an area covering 33sq km of the central North Island volcanic plateau and will start initial surveys in February and March. Silver City will be investing at least $1.25 million in the area over the next five years. A private Queenstown tourism and hospitality school is expanding into Asia. Queenstown Resort College will offer its adventure tourism management diploma at a Malaysian college from Monday. QRC, a private tertiary institution, has been contracted by the owners of Malaysian college Kolej Yaysan Saad to provide the 21-month course. QRC chief executive Charlie Phillips said the Asian partnership showed the respect accorded Queenstown’s tourism industry. “It’s a tick in the box for Queenstown Inc, so to speak.”

As a successful private company, Stevenson was well-able to finance mine development costs.

It did not have the overheads of Solid Energy or Bathurst.

The latter was “talking everything up all the time because they are on the stock exchange”.

“As long as we have permission to go mining, we will go mining. We are not waiting for markets or anything like that.

“The money is there. All we want is a permit to go mining.”

Stevenson required consents from local councils and the Department of Conservation, Mr Coleman said. It had filed some draft and some formal consent applications, but the consent process would take time.

Stevenson was keen to start work and had received “unbelievable” local support.

“Every party has a slightly different idea but all want it to happen.

Consent sought for new mine An Auckland-based company planning a new coal mine near Westport says it is unconcerned about export coal prices, international markets or development capital.

Stevenson Group subsidiary, Stevenson Mining, is seeking consent for a multi-million dollar opencast mine at Te Kuha, about 10km south-east of Westport.

Stevenson hopes to push a 9km road into the proposed mine site this year and be mining by next year.

Stevenson Mining general manager Mike Coleman said the “small mine” would employ about 40 people.

It would produce around 250,000 tonnes of coal a year to be railed directly from Te Kuha to Lyttelton for export.

Solid Energy’s Stockton mine produces 1.4 million tones a year. Bathurst Resources proposes to produce 500,000 tonnes annually, rising to one million tonnes, from its Denniston Escarpment Mine.

Low international coking coal prices have crippled Stockton and stalled Escarpment, which is about 8km north of Stevenson’s site.

Mr Coleman said international prices weren’t a concern to Stevenson.

“We are not worried about that sort of thing. We know the

■ Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Fry the mince in two batches to brown, drain off the fat and set the mince aside in a bowl.

■ Wipe the pan clean, reduce the heat to medium and add a dash of oil. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring for 5 minutes until soft. Add the drained mince

back to the pan along with the spices, tomatoes, beans, stock, capsicum and sugar. Simmer until reduced to a thick sauce (around 20-30 minutes). Taste and season as required.

■ Brush the wraps lightly with oil, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and place on oven trays. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes or until crisp, turning over once.

Break them into big chips.

■ Salsa: Combine the ingredients gently in a bowl just before serving and season with salt and pepper.

■ To serve: Place chips on to plates and top with the mince.

Add a spoonful of salsa, a dollop of sour cream and fresh coriander.

Smart products ‘gimmicks’ If tech firms have their way, everything you use daily, from your toothbrush to your car, will one day be connected to the internet.

At this year’s International CES - the consumer tech industry’s annual Las Vegas confab - you can’t go more than a few steps without hearing someone talking about a way to connect something new to the internet.

But as companies rush to create apps and embed chips in everything from your blankets to your shoes, it’s unclear whether consumers are as hot on the “smart everything” trend.

After all, people probably don’t need an alert on their phone to tell them when their toast is ready - the bread popping out is a pretty good clue.

It’s one thing to have a smart appliance that saves you time or money, which is the main selling point for successful devices such as the Nest thermostat.

A critical and consumer darling, analysts have estimated the Nest sells about 100,000 units per month.

But other smart products have not been so quick to catch on. Companies are tight-lipped about sales figures for smart appliances, but even Whirlpool has admitted that its smart washing machine is “a little bit of a hammer looking for a nail right now”.

Experts project that the market for smart appliances overall will only reach $US5 billion in sales by 2015; by contrast, Whirlpool alone took in around $19 billion in sales for its appliance businesses last year.

Vodafone is on “shaky ground” in raising its fibre internet prices along with copper-line broadband charges, says InternetNZ. The country’s three biggest internet companies are planning to charge customers more from next month and the general manager at one of them doesn’t think broadband will ever be as cheap as it was before Christmas. The price hikes follow a draft decision from the Commerce Commission in December lifting what lines company Chorus can charge internet retailers like Spark for wholesale services.

In a blistering determination, the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) said Forte Alpha Operations made “empty promises” and deliberately misled and deceived its employee Richard Newall, who was underpaid by more than $50,000.

Do we really want to obsessively monitor the updates from a smart diaper, an app-connected toothbrush or an automatic, internet-connected belt?

For the majority of average consumers, the answer right now is “no, thank you”.

In a new survey by Nielsen’s Affinnova group, just over 40 per cent of US adults said that the smart products they’ve seen so far seem like gimmicks, and 59 per cent said they need real value to spend money on a smart product, not just novelty.

That presents a major challenge for companies such as Samsung, which have thrown themselves wholly into the development of smart appliances and electronics.

In a speech this week, Samsung chief executive BK Yoon

said that he would like to see all of Samsung’s products connected to the internet within the next five years.

But even consumers who are buying such products appear to want more than just connectivity. They also crave simplicity.

Research firm Accenture found in a global survey released this week that 83 per cent of people who’ve used smart devices such as fitness monitors, home security systems and even smart thermostats have had frustrating problems getting those devices to work.

Just over one-fifth of those surveyed deemed smart devices “too complicated to use”. Nearly as many also said that they had problems even setting up the devices. And once they did get them working, 19 per cent said that they felt the products didn’t work as advertised.

Those problems may be dampening enthusiasm for the revolution that Web-oriented companies are trying to foment - a trend that analysts predict could rake in over $3.04 trillion by 2020 if firms get it right.

So while enthusiasm for the “Internet of Things” is a hot catchphrase these days in the tech industry, it’s still decidedly in its awkward adolescent phase.

To really sell consumers, companies will have to think hard about how to make connected devices useful, safe and comprehensible.

That’s not to say the “Internet of Things” isn’t going to happen, but it probably requires a little more time at the drawing board, given the products companies in Vegas are pitching this week.

Last year was not kind to bitcoin.

And 2015 already looks as if it could be just as tough for the digital currency: Bitcoin exchange Bitstamp went offline this week as it investigated a multimilliondollar security breach, and bitcoin prices fell from about $US320 to $US270 in the first week of the year. In brief Club racing on Saturday The Tinwald Cycling Club resumes its road programme this weekend with another rare Saturday race. Four weeks since the club championships the riders will look to burn off any festive rust in the 36km handicap around the Winchmore Church block tomorrow to allow people to attend the Elite men’s road race in Christchurch on Sunday. The club’s first race back starts the 11 week countdown to the Mid Canterbury Championship race on March 21, also a Saturday.

Kiwis still in the hunt Four Kiwis remain near the top of the leaderboard after three rounds of the final stage of qualifying school for the PGA Tour of Australasia in Melbourne.

Brad Shilton and Michael Long are among a four-way tie at the top of the standings at seven-under.

Shilton fired a three-under 69 at The Victoria Golf Club yesterday while Long signed for an evenpar 72. Second-round leader Ben Campbell fired a two-over 74 as he slipped to six-over to be in outright fifth. Daniel Pearce is the next best of the New Zealanders in a share of eighth at four-under.

Bony moving to City Swansea striker Wilfried Bony is expected to complete his move to English Premier League champions Manchester City in the next few days, according to his management. His agent, Francis Kacou, said negotiations for the deal, worth a reported STG30 million, would be finalised soon.

Bony, who will be playing at the Africa Cup of Nations later this month in Equatorial Guinea, said he was looking forward to featuring in the Champions League.

Top showing from local riders

Ashburton riders produced some solid results at the Canterbury Track Cycling Carnival at Denton Park Velodrome in Christchurch this week.

Caitlin Titheridge collected a win in the under 15 1600m handicap while Jessie Banks, a New Zealand junior development road cyclist, won the under 17 1600m at the two-day event.

One of the biggest performances came from New Zealand age group representative and current Cycling New Zealand (formerly BikeNZ) squad member Alex Hooper.

Hooper managed to outgun New Zealand representatives and Commonwealth Games medallists Matt Archibold and Eddie Dawkins in the Open 2000m race but finished behind Dylan Kennett - another New Zealand rep.

Hooper stepped on the podium twice on day one, also coming in third in the elimination, and had a third in both the 800m and 200m wheelrace on day two.

As well as her win Titheridge also produced two third placings in the 1200m and elimination races.

Banks had runner-up finishes in the under 17 2000m and junior girls elimination while also coming third in the under 17

1600m and elimination on day one.

Frances Smith, fourth in the open women’s 200m, and Julia Tarbotton produced some encouraging rides as they build towards the elite and under 19 track nationals at the end of the month in Cambridge.

Banks, Titheridge and the other Mid Canterbury juniors can all look forward to the junior track nationals in March, also at Cambridge.

Lauren up against top class opposition

Hinds cyclist Lauren Ellis will be out to regain the women’s time trial title when the elite road cycling championships get under way today.

Ellis won the time trial back in 2012 but will head out prior to the two previous winners in Linda Villumsen and defending champion Jamie Nielsen the elite women cover a 25km course at Lincoln today.

“Knowing those two are behind me chasing me will certainly hurry me up to go faster,” Ellis said.

Nielsen edged out the whitehot favourite and defending

champion Linda Villumsen by 28 seconds last year, with Ellis coming in fourth.

In the elite men’s time trial, Jason Christie will be out to out-gun defending champion and Avanti Racing team-mate, Taylor Gunman over the 40km distance. Christie took out the under 23 title on the same course back in 2011.

Ellis and the other elite women are back on the bike tomorrow for the 120km road race, encompassing eight laps and six climbs of Dyers Pass, in the final year in Christchurch before the event moves to Napier next year.

‘Strongest team ever’

BY KURT BAYER New Zealand has named its 15man squad which will attempt to break a 40-year duck and win the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup. Experienced seamer Kyle Mills edges out Canterbury upcomer Matt Henry in what was a hotly-debated bowling spot for the four-yearly tournament that opens at Christchurch’s newly-revamped Hagley Oval on February 14.

The other major surprise included in the lineup, revealed by Black Caps coach Mike Hesson at 5pm, was Wellington Firebirds all-rounder Grant Elliott.

There is no room for Jimmy Neesham.

Tom Latham secures a middle-order spot, while in-form left-arm test bowler Trent Boult was also included.

Young paceman Adam Milne is also there, while the other allrounder is Corey Anderson.

The squad meant the team has the ability to adopt a “horses for courses” approach and adapt to different conditions.

“We probably won’t roll out the same 11 every game,” Hesson said.

Hesson stressed the need to ensure every player was confident, fit and fresh for the start of the February-March tournament.

McCullum said the squad would be well placed to cope with the pressures of playing in their own backyard.

“The guys are very humble and level with their emotions and that helps with the pressures.”

Rahul steps up as Indians fight back

BY JAMES MACSMITH KL Rahul stepped forward as a key member of India’s generation next as he scored his maiden Test century yesterday in the fourth Test against Australia at the SCG. With India fielding their least-experienced Test team in almost 40 years, Rahul spearheaded India’s strong reply to Australia’s first innings of 572.

After a forgettable debut in the third Test in Melbourne where he looked out of his depth with scores of three and one, the 22-year-old showed why he was viewed as a player of the future

Erakovic looks ahead

By Kris shannon Bowing out of the doubles at the ASB Classic was something of a mixed blessing for Marina Erakovic.

On one hand, yesterday’s quarter-final defeat, alongside partner Monica Puig, means Erakovic’s participation in her hometown tournament is over for another year.

But, perhaps more importantly ahead of the Australian Open, the Kiwi’s exit will allow for additional singles match practice before the year’s first grand slam.

Erakovic will fly out to Sydney first thing this morning - yesterday’s match finished just too late to catch the last flight of the night - where she will enter the qualification section for next week’s Apia International.

The New Zealand No 1 will get straight back on the court after she touches down across the Tasman, with the benefits accrued from another match making the arduous schedule worthwhile.

“It’s always tough, these sort of turnarounds, but you do the best you can,” Erakovic said.

Ashburton’s Kimberley Bird is part of a strong team of young South Island riders heading over to Australia this weekend with one thing on their minds – winning back the silverware.

Bird, Olivia Robertson (Ohoka), Rose Alfeld (West Melton) and Nicole White (Invercargill) leave today bound for the Boneo Park Equestrian Centre in Rosebud, Victoria.

They will take on teams from Japan, Taiwan and the Victorian Hygain State Squad team in the Inter-Country Team Challenge as part of the Victoria Junior and Young Rider Championship.

At 18 Bird is the youngest of the team, but she has also posted some strong results this season since moving up from ponies to young rider this season.

“I’ve had a slow start to the season with a few horses be-

ing out but with them back it should be good now,” Bird said.

“It is a really good group of girls going so it should be a lot of fun, and I’ll just try to soak up the experience.”

She also boasts previous international experience having competed as part of a New Zealand pony team in the International Classique Pony Competition in South Africa.

The competition will run over two rounds with riders

jumping 1.10m tracks on borrowed horses selected out of a hat and her prior experience of riding, and performing, on an unfamiliar mount will certainly help.

“You just have to ride the horse how it likes to be ridden.

“You can’t ride it like one of your own but make sure it’s happy and go from there.”

Easier said than done as there is no practice session or trial run to familiarise a rider with their temporary horse.

“You usually get about 15 minutes and I assume that will be the case again.”

The international competition is the start of a busy business end of the season for Bird.

She has six shows on consecutive weekends, starting with the Ashburton Show next weekend, the Nationals at McLeans Island in February, leading up the prestigious Horse of the Year in Hastings in March.
