Accidents in Mid Canterbury schoolyards are on the rise with 420 claims counted last year, but principals say it will not force them to “cotton wool” children. Figures obtained from the Accident Compensation Corporation show injuries which happened inside Ashburton District school gates cost the taxpayer $504,720 from 2010 to 2013 from a total of 1616 accident claims. The 2013 figure was the highest in the four-year period with 420 claims lodged, a 6 per cent increase on 2012. prised” by the figures, saying the increase was likely to correspond with the growing population of the district. He said schools had rigorous health and safety guidelines in place, such as duty teachers rostered on at lunchtimes and approved adventure playgrounds. Loss of balance, being struck by a person or animal and collisions were the main causes of accidents in Mid Canterbury schools. The figures showed soft tissue injuries – such as sprains, strains and contusions – lacerations and fractures or dislocations as the most common injures.
