Accidents at school rising

Accidents in Mid Canterbury schoolyards are on the rise with 420 claims counted last year, but principals say it will not force them to “cotton wool” children.

Figures obtained from the Accident Compensation Corporation show injuries which happened inside Ashburton District school gates cost the taxpayer $504,720 from 2010 to 2013 from a total of 1616 accident claims.

The 2013 figure was the highest in the four-year period with 420 claims lodged, a 6 per cent increase on 2012.

Loss of balance, being struck by a person or animal and collisions were the main causes of accidents in Mid Canterbury schools.

The figures showed soft tissue injuries – such as sprains, strains and contusions – lacerations and fractures or dislocations as the most common injures.

Fishermen have found the remains of two conjoined grey whale calves in a north-western Mexican lagoon. The four-metre long whales were dead when they were found in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon, which opens to the Pacific Ocean in the Baja California peninsula. Officials from the National Natural Protected Areas Commission verified the discovery during a visit this week. The nearly half-tonne creatures were linked at the waist, with two full heads and tail fins, said Benito Bermudez, a marine biologist and the commission’s regional manager.

Campion to head festival jury New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion, the only woman to win the coveted Palme d’Or, will head the jury at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the organisers say. “It’s a great honour for me to be chosen as the president of the jury,” the 59-year-old director said in a statement. “To tell the truth I can’t wait,” added Campion, who succeeds last year’s jury head Steven Spielberg. The 67th Cannes film festival will run from May 14 to 25 in the southern France resort town.

Campion who won the Palme d’Or for The Piano in 1993 also holds the distinction as the only double winner, her short film Peel having picked up the Palme d’Or in that category in 1986.

The Piano was also a big winner at the 1993 Academy Awards across the Atlantic, with Campion winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay while Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively.

Nappies spark radioactive alarms Austrian hazmat specialists, called in after Geiger counters showed alarmingly high readings for a truck arriving at an incinerator, found the problem – radioactive adult nappies.

After unloading the truck, firefighters from the hazardous materials unit of the city of Linz found nearly two dozen nappies from a hospital that had become contaminated with radioactive iodine. The substance is swallowed during some medical and diagnostic procedures. – AP

Madonna has insisted that her 13-year-old son Rocco wasn’t drinking alcohol after posting a picture online of him holding a bottle of gin. The Queen of Pop came under fire when she shared an image on Instagram of Rocco – her son from her marriage to director Guy Ritchie – holding the booze as he stood between two friends clutching bottles of vodka. The 55-year-old captioned the snap: “The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014.” The picture met with some criticism online, with one fan saying it was “extremely irresponsible” and another questioning whether the boys were old enough to drink.

However, Madonna quickly fired back to explain that Rocco and his friends hadn’t actually been drinking the alcohol. “No-one was drinking we were just having fun!

Calm down and get a sense of humour! Don’t start the year off with judgment!”

Too chilly to be on the run Just how cold is it in the United States?

Apparently cold enough for an escaped prisoner to turn himself in. Authorities say the inmate escaped from a minimum security facility in Kentucky on Monday. As temperatures dropped far below freezing on Tuesday, they say he walked into a motel and asked the clerk to call police.

Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts says 42-year-old Robert Vick told the clerk he wanted to turn himself in and escape the arctic air. Roberts says Vick was checked out by paramedics and returned to Blackburn Correctional Complex.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Lamb says Vick would have been dressed in prison-issued pants, a shirt and a jacket when he escaped.

It’s so cold ‘it hurts to breathe’

An Ashburton man says the cold gripping the US makes it hurt to breathe and skin exposure has to be limited.

Simon Martin lives in New York with his wife Alex, and while the city isn’t one of those hardest hit by the polar vortex bringing snow, ice and freezing temperatures to the country, those who live there are still battling the kind of cold temperatures most have never experienced before.

“It’s currently -13 outside and has been down to about -15 today. The worst thing though is the wind chill, which at the moment makes the temperature feel like -22,” Mr Martin said.

“It’s the kind of wind chill that the air actually hurts to breath in.

“The key is limiting exposed skin and a must is a long, thick coat.”

But Mr Martin said it wasn’t as bad in New York as it was in the North Midwest – like Chicago and Minnesota - but it was nothing like he’d ever experi-

enced before.

“The media and public do seem to get pretty amped up about the weather.

“A night and day of snow was forecast last Thursday/Friday and the grocery stores were so packed there were lines outside.

“We couldn’t quite understand what the panic was. It was about six inches of snow in the end - which we didn’t think was too much.”

He said the danger was the temperature though.

“Today was the coldest ever measured in Central Park at 4 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about -15 Celsius.

The previous record was set in 1896 at 6 degrees Fahrenheit.

It means there is plenty of ice around and snow boots on the walk to work are a must.

“The subway – usually not such a welcome place – is a bit of a refuge with the heat generated by the trains.”

He said even Chicago Zoo’s polar bear had been moved indoors as it was too cold for it.

“And our experience with the polar vortex was made all the more chilling by the boiler in

Mr Murphy said injuries often occurred during playtime breaks, but the figures also included incidents that may have happened in the school grounds during weekends or after-hours.

Nationally during the past

year, 77,600 school injuries were reported, a five per cent increase on 2011/12.

“You’re never going to provide a capsule . . . in Mid Canterbury I don’t think you can attribute the growth in number of accidents down to schools struggling to cope with resources available, but maybe that’s true in larger centres.”

Sea reclaimed dead whale

A dead whale on the beach at Lowcliffe has washed out to sea before Department of Conservation staff were able to identify it.

Staff were not informed about the whale until Tuesday, despite many locals having seen it on the shore.

A farmer who lives nearby believed the whale was still there, but another check yesterday proved it was no longer there.

Biodiversity ranger Steve Harraway phoned the farmer yesterday who told him the news.

“The whale has been washed out to sea. I guess it will arrive on a beach again probably anywhere northwards at some stage,” Mr Harraway said.

Phone services took three days to be restored to around 700 Mid Canterbury customers after a crash on New Year’s Day took out a telecommunications cabinet. A van crashed off Bremners Road, taking out the telecommunications cabinet on the footpath beside the Ashburton Cemetery. A Chorus spokesperson said the cabinet was destroyed but repairs began immediately and all lines were restored by January 3. The driver of the van was uninjured in the crash. It’s believed he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

“Brydes whale has three

ridges running down from the blow-hole to the snout, whereas other baleen types only have one.

Also the pectoral fins are short and pointed and lack a knobbly appearance on the leading edge, obvious in adult humpbacks. The body appears

to be more slender but once again difficult to assess from the photo,” Mr Harraway said.

“There are other species similar to the brydes and until we can actually see it on land it is still unknown, and even then we may have to wait until the results of DNA sampling.”

Cooking students prepare for cook-off

A young child was airlifted to hospital following a serious crash near Russell yesterday afternoon.

The crash, involving two cars, occurred about 1.30pm. A girl, aged about five, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by helicopter.

Armed robbery A case that contained cash stolen in an armed robbery in central Whangarei has been found by a member of the public with nothing inside. The black case, believed to have contained a large sum of money, was stolen by a balaclavadisguised robber who pointed a pistol at an Armourguard security van officer on Tuesday afternoon.

The robber and getaway driver are both on the run.

Sand top-up plan The Tauranga City Council is preparing an application to the Bay of Plenty Regional Council for consent for sand renourishment at several harbour reserves including Kulim Park, Memorial Park, Fergusson Park, and the Maxwells Rd Esplanade Reserve. Tension in the kitchen is simmering and about to boil over for Methven Summer School Master Chef contestants.

Four teams, each of two Methvenites, are sharpening their knives and cooking skills as they prepare to compete against each other in a cook-off tomorrow night.

Prior to the cook-off they have had to attend three summer school classes.

The first on Tuesday was on how to prepare a classy salmon entree, the second yesterday showed how to prepare a hearty pork main, while the third today covers how to make a dashing chocolate dessert.

Contestants have joined with other pupils enrolled in the classes to learn a variety of dishes under the various categories, and will have to choose one from each to cook on Friday night.

Mt Hutt ski manager James Urquhart is in the Anzac team with Paul Creswick, an Australian who runs Brinkley Resort.

So far he has taken the competition seriously, and practiced by cooking salmon for his wife on Tuesday night.

“I sneaked into Top Notch thinking no-one would be around to see me get the ingredients, but the girls were there, and they were reading cook books,” Mr Urquhart said.

Over 80 tickets have sold, but there are still plenty more with door sales on the night.

The cook-off will be based where lessons have been held, in the Mount Hutt College home economics room.

Spectators will be able to taste food and visit the kitchen, while observing the bulk of the night’s proceedings via a video link to the school hall.

A 49-year-old boatie believed to be dead after falling off a boat at the mouth of the Hutt River has been identified as Uikilifi Peniamina. Mr Peniamina was collecting fishing nets when he was knocked from the boat and swept into Wellington Harbour on Sunday evening. The Navy dive team has been called in to help with the search.

Fire in Blenheim shop A Blenheim shop was badly damaged by a fire yesterday morning. Fire Service senior communicator Mau Barbara said several people called about 5am about the fire at the On The Spot shop in Budge Street in Riversdale.

Firefighters arrived to find the shop well ablaze. Four trucks attended and it took over an hour to extinguish.

Owner trying to track down cat shooter

Another Allenton resident is on the hunt for a cat shooter.

Galbraith Street resident Sam Hall spoke out in anger yesterday after reading the heartbreaking story on January 2 about the fatal shooting of a Creek Road pet cat.

Mr Hall, who lives near residents whose cat died of an air rifle pellet wound, said his own cat Croozer had fallen victim to two shootings in recent years.

“The first shooting he was lucky and the pellet went in his shoulder and Croozer was sent home all right but with the pellet still in him. The second time he was not so lucky as he was shot in his leg and shattered his bones,” Mr Hall said.

Croozer underwent rigorous treatment, but managed to get back to full health.

Although it is unknown if the two incidents are linked, Mr Hall hoped further publicity of cat shootings in the Allenton area would help catch the offender/s.

Sergeant Janine Bowden, of Ashburton, said investigations into the cat shooting on Creek Road after Christmas were stalling after speaking to relevant neighbours in the area, including those who may have been suspected by Mr Hall.

The Christmas shooting was the second time the Creek Road resident had one of her cats shot within 14 months.

“With the two incidents we have looked at the projectiles which we found to be different and the bullets used were from different weapons,” Ms Bowden said.

Mid Canterbury SPCA manager John Keeley condemned the actions of the cat shooters, but said if they were to be found and then charged it could be difficult to prove they intended to kill the animal under the Animal Welfare Act.

Mother shocked, angry

By JameS Ihaka and matthew BackhouSe The mother of a Hamilton boy who was filmed celebrating his ninth birthday drinking at a skatepark says she was shocked and angry to discover he had been consuming alcohol.

A video of the boy, who appears to be intoxicated, was posted on YouTube yesterday, showing him holding a can of Cody’s RTD bourbon and cola drink. He appears barely able to stand and is later seen slumped against a wall at a skatepark in Fairfield.

Police said they are appalled by the incident and the actions of the people at the park are being investigated.

The boy’s mother said her family had been at a tangi.

When they arrived home the boy, excited about his birthday, ran off to tell his friends who

lived nearby.

He later arrived home, acting strangely, and tried to pour himself a drink but instead spilled it all over himself.

“He smelled like Lynx [deodorant] and I asked him ‘what’s wrong with you ?’ then I could see he was really drunk.”

The mother said her son had never drunk alcohol before. He was put straight to bed but was sick during the night.

She said she was “extremely angry” that an adult had supplied alcohol to her son. She was also angry that a number of people had seen the events unfold but did not immediately contact her or police.

The mother said her son had received a “very good talking to” yesterday morning, and at the police station later in the day.

He was “grounded indefinitely”.

“Don’t you worry, he’s not going far,” she said.

The boy’s father, who is separated from the boy’s mother, said he was appalled his son was allowed to drink so much alcohol and first learnt of the incident when somebody called to say his son was on YouTube.

“My heart is ripping out at the moment, I’m trying to hold it together. It’s hard.”

Hamilton city area commander Inspector Greg Nicholls said police were considering charges under the sale of alcohol act. However, the legislation around the supplying of alcohol to minors “never envisaged an adult supplying alcohol to a 9-year-old child”.

“I see the drunken activities of adults who one would think could make good choices in life,” he said “But to have a vulnerable young boy consuming alcohol is very appalling.”

Mr Nicholls said police went to the Fairfield skate park on Clarkin Road on Tuesday at 6pm after receiving several concerned calls from the public about the boy.

He described the boy’s home life as stable and caring but CYF had been contacted to provide any support.

The man who shot the video, 18-year-old scooter rider Bradley Goudie, said he and a friend had found the boy drunk about 4.30pm.

In the video Mr Goudie can be heard talking to the people around the boy saying “he’s like eight ... he could die”.

“Basically I was just concerned about his safety because he was trying to hop on his scooter and ride around the bowl. And alcohol and physical activity do not mix - especially when you’re only 9-years-old.”

A 25-year-old French tourist spent a cold and wet night “hunkered down” in the bush near the Routeburn Track on Tuesday night.

Senior Constable Chris Blackford, of Queenstown, said the tourist failed to meet at a prearranged point after walking the Lake Sylvan Track and a search and rescue operation was later initiated.

Southern deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said other tourists alerted police to the Frenchman’s whereabouts at 8.30am yesterday.

Other than being “cold and wet”, the man was fine.

Boys rescued Two boys have been rescued from Lake Taupo after their boat capsized yesterday afternoon.

One of the boys used a mobile phone to call his mum, saying they were out of their boat and needed help. The woman phoned police who alerted the Greenlea Rescue helicopter. The helicopter found the boys, clinging to the upturned hull of their dinghy, within 10 minutes of takeoff. The helicopter crew directed a coast guard boat to the scene, and the boys were pulled aboard the boat. - APNZ

The Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre on West Street is nearing completion and is scheduled to open in the second half of this year, while the current gallery in Baring Square will close in early May. Curator manager Shirin Khosraviani said she would miss having a gallery open.

“That’s the hardest part for us, we want to minimise that closed window as much as possible, which is why we are going to host shows right up to the point where we can’t host exhibitions.

“The gallery exists for the public, there’s no other reason why public gallery exists,” Ms Khosraviani said.

Once the gallery closes, then the packing will begin. First there will be dismantling of the office and other gallery areas and packing up all the many art works and other equipment.

“The art work will probably be the last thing we will pack, because while they are in storage that’s the safest place for them as opposed to living in a crate.”

The gallery has a collection of over 2000 works from 55 artists, the bulk from children’s illustrator David Elliot, and others from Timaru

Cold night in open

Human skeletal remains found on a property at the northern end of Anaura Bay, north of Gisborne, were recovered by police yesterday. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott said the remains were found by builders working on a property. They would be dated in Gisborne. “It’s believed at this stage they had been there for a considerable period of time.

They are possibly pre-European,” he said.

And while Ms Khosraviani is disappointed Ashburton will be without a public gallery for part of the year, she is excited about a possible opening exhibition which was currently under negotiation.

“We are really excited about opening the new building, the opportunities for the types of work and shows we can host are expanding,” she said.

The mother of an Auckland teenager who died after a fight at rugby training is facing a new charge over the shooting of her husband. Mona Dudley, 39, appeared in the Waitakere District Court yesterday where an assault charge was withdrawn by police.

In its place is a charge of injuring her husband, Brent, under circumstances that if he died, she would have been guilty of manslaughter. It carries a maximum sentence of three years’ jail and relates to an incident on December 27, where Dudley is accused of shooting Mr Dudley in the chest. Dudley did not enter a plea and, at the request of her lawyer, Ashley Thomas, was bailed until next month when she will appear before a judge. The Dudleys’ son, 15-year-old Stephen, died in June after a fight at a rugby training session. Two youths face a High Court manslaughter trial in February in relation to his death.

Man dies in fall A man has fallen to his death from a central Auckland building yesterday. The man’s body was found on Durham St, between Albert and Queen streets, shortly after 11.30am. There were no suspicious circumstances. A bystander was taken to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack near the scene, police said.

Call to bring in training courses

Quad bike retailers are calling for more training courses to be run in the Ashburton District to up-skill riders and lessen the chance of accidents.

In the wake of the death of a Southland six-year-old, who crashed while riding an adult size quad bike, retailers say that while they point out all safety factors around the bikes at the point of sale, having courses they could recommend to buyers would add another safety layer.

But at the end of the day, Jeff Marshall said, warnings and advice can only go so far, safety was ultimately in the hands of the bike owner and the bike rider.

“We point out and go through the safety issues in the owners’ booklet and I also have a separate letter printed up that we go through. That’s all about safe riding, appropriate age and wearing helmets. We really push the helmet message,” he said.

There were also warning labels on bikes alerting riders to wear a helmet and made it clear ATVs were for adults, not chil-

dren, Mr Marshall said. They’re rider-active machines and you need to be big enough to position your weight in the middle; younger, smaller riders don’t have the size.”

ATVs were now on most farms around the Ashburton District and sales last year across New Zealand were well up on previous years, he said.

Federated Farmers health and safety spokesperson and Ashburton farmer Jeanette Maxwell said the safety rules around quad bikes were very clear – no person under 16 should be riding an adult size bike.

The key for bike safety was ensuring bikes were well maintained, that helmets were worn and that they were ridden by adults only.

Bike safety courses were important and in the Ashburton District were run on-demand for Farm Safe, Mrs Maxwell said.

While they could be lethal for child riders, quad bikes could still pose a risk for adult riders, she said, because of the ‘human factor’.

“You’re more likely to have an accident before lunch than later in the day. If you’re hungry or

dehydrated you’re likely to have brain fatigue and your decision making is likely to be affected.”

When riders were under pressure or under stress, accident rates were also higher – on all machinery, Mrs Maxwell said.

Quad bike deaths, however, had to be put in perspective against other deaths she said.

“Out of 100,000 quad bikes sold onto New Zealand farms, we have five to seven deaths a year. More and more are being sold and yet the accident rates stay the same.”

By comparison, 42 were killed on road bikes, she said.

Students put their grey matter to the test

School is in at Mount Hutt College this week, and it is only early January.

It’s the Methven Summer School, hosting over 200 adult students from throughout New Zealand.

Classes yesterday included Discover Your Voice and Ukelele Nitty Gritty.

In both classes, participants sang and/or strummed their way out of their comfort zones,

but by the end of the day were glad they did.

“They were all absolutely terrified to begin with,” said voice tutor Lois Johnston.

She had a class of seven women, young and old, for the oneday course.

“It’s been very non-threatening, because we were all nervous when we started,” said Jill Davidson, who had travelled from Dunedin to do the course.

The students said many of them had been members of their school choirs, and wanted

to regain their singing confidence.

They were not planning on auditioning for X-Factor, but believed when it came to singing in community choirs, at family events or even karaoke, they would now feel more relaxed about it.

Deborah Tipa of Waimate was teaching the ukelele course.

She said she started playing as an eight-year-old in the 1950s.

She said she was a “total nerd” at the time, as playing the instrument was not cool, but to-

day it had undergone a revival.

Her seven pupils had progressed throughout the day from not being able to play at all, to learning a variety of songs such as You Are My Sunshine.

“I really admire the courage it takes for my students, who are predominantly women, to come along and learn an instrument,” Ms Tipa said.

The 27th annual Methven Summer School is hosting a wide range of courses and runs through to Sunday.

Musical theatre based around songs from popular films will be on stage at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre next week.

And it will be youngsters aged from nine to 20 bringing the performances to the stage, after they have attended a week of classes at the annual Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School.

Musical director and producer Jo Castelow said she had 105 students enrolled in this year’s popular summer school, and they would be staging three performances at the end of the week instead of two.

“Because it’s quite a popular thing, the kids work so jolly hard,” she said.

Movies from which songs would feature included The Lion King, The Wizard of Oz, Pitch Perfect and James Bond films.

“People have this misconception that it’s a choir, it’s not, they move, it’s true music theatre, it’s like a main show.”

Students will begin with auditions on Sunday, which would be for solo parts, and the school kicks off on Monday and runs for five days until Friday.

Concerts will be 7.30pm on Friday, and 2pm and 7.30pm on Saturday.

Tickets could be purchased at the event centre box office which had re-opened for the year, or on-line.

Arson attack shatters town

By Andrew Ashton Residents and tourists in Kurow were left biting their tongues when asked to describe what they thought about a suspected arson attack on the town’s most prominent summer tourist attraction.

Kurow Museum and Information Centre co-ordinator Carron Cossens said local residents were “shattered” and an-

gry after the township’s “Hay Family” was destroyed by fire yesterday.

Every December for more than 20 years, the hay bales, decorated like people and children’s characters, have appeared in the centre of town, this year attracting hundreds of tourists during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Ms Cossens said a lot of “rich language” had been used to de-

scribe what people thought of the incident.

“People are absolutely shattered and that’s the best word I can use.

“I think it is really about trashing the work of volunteers as much as it is about destroying an icon for our area.”

She said the loss of the Hay Family would impact on tourism in the town.

“People were stopping to to

photograph themselves there, then heading to the shops to have an ice-cream.”

The Slee family, from Kurow, had been involved in the annual decoration of the hay bales for more than 20 years, and Janina Slee said the incident was “really disappointing”. This year the “Hay Family” had been decorated to look like the Minions from the Despicable Me movie.

Mid Cantabrians needing important papers certified or authorised have been using the free Justices of the Peace service at Community House.

It is a weekly service available to anybody.

On average the JPs on duty see around 10 people a day over the service’s three hour slot.

Ashburton Justices of the Peace Association members Noel Lowe and Trish Watson were on site as part of the JP roster - there are 62 JPs all around the district plus eight retired.

Between them they have given more than 50 years’ service to the association – Mr Lowe more than 30 years and Mrs Watson 20 years. It is a voluntary service.

Acceptance as a JP is different now to when they accepted the role.

After being nominated by their MPs, they were checked out through community contacts.

Mr Lowe said now there were strict steps to determine whether a person was of “good

character”. Police and court checks were carried out, interviews and training to be completed.

It is an important role but was not for personal gain, Mr Lowe said.

During the public sessions, JPs dealt with a range of documents needing to be filled in or authorised.

These included passport applications, certification of original papers, sponsorship declarations for immigration or banking documents.

They also signed dissolution of marriage certificates.

Mr Lowe said there were four levels to the JP service with those doing ministerial duties like those on offer at community house, issuing officers; able to authorise warrants such as search warrants, judicial; covering court proceedings and retired JPs. However, Mr Lowe was quick to point out they did not give legal advice.

“We don’t give advice; we don’t give legal advice whatsoever.”

The service is available every Tuesday between noon and 3pm.

Triumph a memorial and tribute to dead daughter A Tauranga man is rebuilding a 1974 Triumph T1 50V Trident in memory of his daughter, who passed away last year after a long battle with a heart condition.

Mark Kimber has spent the past six weeks searching for parts to put the 750cc motorbike together and on March 1 the collector’s item will be auctioned off to raise awareness and money for Heart Children Bay of Plenty.

Mr Kimber’s daughter, Jesse Gibb-Kimber, died last October at age 21.

She endured a lifetime battle with a congenital heart defect and Mr Kimber said he wanted to do something for the organisation that helped his daughter so much.

He did not know much about Triumphs but was up for the challenge, he said.

“I know my way around an old Harley but not these bikes.

I’m trying to track down the genuine articles and not the after-market stuff.”

He is hoping to raise as much money as possible and friends have estimated the bike will fetch between $16,000 and $18,000.

Jesse’s brother, Luke GibbKimber, said the money was going to a good cause and it was putting his father to a good test, “As Jesse would want”.

The bike would be auctioned off at Brewers Bar. Ilitary Grind Team, Trethra and Piston Broke will be playing in the evening.

A $10 donation will be asked to cover charges.

Preschoolers over-represented in toll

By Brendan Manning Men and preschoolers are over-represented in our drowning toll, Water Safety NZ warns.

There were 81 drownings last year, a record low, but chief executive Matt Claridge said an increase in the number of preschoolers who died was of particular concern.

“It’s great that the toll is tracking down, but 81 deaths is still a huge number ranking us among the worst in the developed world,” he said.

Five preschoolers drowned last year, up from the year before.

In June, 2-year-old Charlie Aaron Unwin drowned in a rubbish hole after he wandered from a house near Gore.

The hole, which was not

fenced off, was a short distance from the house and had filled with water from recent rain.

Two months later, 2-yearold Violet Elisabeth Waples drowned after wandering off from her family home in Queenstown.

She was found 100m away floating face down in Lake Wakatipu.

“No preschoolers should be drowning in this country,” Mr Claridge said.

“Kids under 5 should be within arms’ reach of a parent or caregiver at all times in, on, and around water.”

To achieve a key change in their behaviour around water, it was crucial New Zealand children were taught swimming survival skills at school age, Mr Claridge said.

The water safety school pro-

gramme co-ordinator at Mt Eden Swim Magic in Auckland said an additional benefit for parents teaching their under 5s how to swim, was that they learned how to supervise their children at the same time.

“They’re going to learn to be aware of the risk.”

Unfortunately, some Pacific Island families did not not see swimming lessons as a priority, Moe Richardson said.

“I’m a Pacific Islander and we’re an at-risk people group.

“Money is an issue for them, they don’t consider swimming lessons as [essential], it’s recreation, that’s how they view it.

“Therefore the money is not going to be invested into swimming lessons.”

Mr Claridge said for every drowning, another 1.8 people

on average needed hospital treatment due to near or nonfatal drownings.

“This is of huge concern and comes at considerable social and economic cost to the community long-term.”

At 77 per cent of 2013s drownings, men continued to be over-represented in the toll, Mr Claridge said.

Five men drowned, four while fishing or gathering seafood, during the official Christmas holiday period.

Two of the men drowned while fishing off rocks at Maunganui Bluff near Dargaville, a third when scuba diving at Motiti Island and the fourth while fishing off the wharf at Kauri Point.

The fifth drowning occurred in a home bath.

A mountain of garlic and a drunk horse owner We’ve probably all had them. Holiday jobs. some were good, some were bad and others were downright messy. Guardian staff have been reminiscing about the odd jobs they once did.

oliday jobs are a necessity for most tertiary students, and in my day it was no different.

Looking back, the worst job I had involved cleaning garlic bulbs for a three-week August break.

There I was in a huge open farm shed rubbing dirty skin off and clipping roots with a mountain of garlic behind me and a small pile of cleaned

Days went by and while the pile in front grew slightly, the mountain did not appear to be diminishing at all.

To add to the agony it was bitterly cold.

A week went by and the dairy/pig farmer, who had made an attempt to diversify by growing garlic with no thought to processing requirements, called in.

Dismayed by my lack of progress, he suggested I step up the pace – and I made a suggestion about what he could do with his garlic!

Following some heated negotiation, more troops were called in.

The following week, a university mate joined me in the garlic shed along with a gaggle of older women said farmer had rounded up from who knows where.

The shed didn’t get any

warmer, or the work less mindnumbingly boring, but the company certainly provided a welcome distraction.

The relationship status of one of my co-worker’s son took up an entire afternoon.

It very quickly became evident the lad was as camp as a row of pink tents, but this didn’t seem to have occurred to his mother or her friends – despite the fact he had lived with his “flat mate” for several years, and they “did everything together”, had never had a girl friend and all his mother’s attempts to hook him up were in vain.

As the afternoon wore on, it dawned on my friend and I that we knew the subject of the discussion, through mutual friends

– who were openly gay, and as far as we were concerned so was the man in question.

Awkward!

The following year I spent the Christmas break at Akaroa, driving a horse drawn wagon up and down the beach for tourists.

It sounded like a good lark, but in reality there were a few issues, primarily with the owner of the set-up, who was more often than not intoxicated and passed out in his dinghy when it came time to pack up in the afternoon – leaving me stranded on the beach front with two tired and hungry horses.

After that experience, I settled for working for my Uncle Tom as a brush hand, supplemented by bar work.

G

etting to know your neighbours is never more important than during the holiday period.

With many in Mid Canterbury away for their summer break or day trips, this time of the year must seem like a prolonged Christmas for burglars.

Ashburton police have noticed a considerable increase in burglaries over the past few weeks and are urging locals to take care and make it as difficult as possible for a potential offender.

One police officer even suggested we needed to think like a burglar and avoid the obvious hints that nobody is home for a considerable time.

You don’t need to be a professional criminal to deduce someone may be on holiday when they have newspapers or mail piling up, curtains closed or grass up to your knees.

Avoiding the attention of burglars just needs a bit of planning and help from a neighbour or a family member.

So it pays to retain a cordial relationship with neighbours that may come in handy during the holidays or an emergency.

Burglars tend to go for the easy score, so if there is even the slightest hint of anyone coming home soon and can’t see any valuable appliances in plain sight, they tend to back off.

The police actively targeting suspected serial offenders will also help to reduce the burglaries in Mid Canterbury.

The local constabulary has identified 11 youths as being responsible for a host of breakins of houses and cars in the Netherby and Hampstead areas.

Three of them have already been arrested for specific offences, but the police have reliable information to believe they are part of a larger group.

With the strong arm of the law keeping a closer eye on these youngsters, the locals in Netherby and Hampstead will feel a bit safer about leaving their home unoccupied.

In brief Woman in suitcase Authorities say a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was thwarted when inspectors found a woman from Thailand inside a suitcase.

Customs and Border Protection agents discovered 48-year-old Pornkamol Mongkolsermsak while inspecting a vehicle entering the United States on December 30.

Mongkolsermsak, from Bangkok, was hidden under clothing in the large suitcase in the back of the vehicle driven by a 56-year-old Phoenix man, whose name hasn’t been released.

The first shipment of chemical material has been removed from Syria under a deal to rid the country of its chemical arsenal.

The removal was carried out as the head of al Qaeda’s Syria affiliate, the Al-Nusra Front, called for an end to four days of clashes between rebels and the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in which at least 274 people have been killed.

“A first quantity of priority chemical materials was moved from two sites to the port of Latakia for verification and was then loaded onto a Danish commercial vessel today,” the joint United Nations-Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (UN-OPCW) mission said in a statement.

The removal of the chemical material from Syria’s coastal Latakia comes after a

planned December 31 deadline for the operation to begin was missed.

Yesterday’s shipment “initiates the process of transfer of chemical materials from the Syrian Arab Republic to locations outside its territory for destruction”, the UNOPCW statement said. The material taken from Syria will be held at sea until additional chemicals arrive. The shipment is being escorted by Chinese, Danish, Norwegian and Russian vessels, the mission said.

Syria agreed last year to a US-Russian deal to hand over its chemical weapons.

The agreement came after the US threatened military action in response to an August 2012 chemical weapons attack outside Damascus that killed hundreds of people.

Prince William has started a 10-week course in agricultural management at Cambridge University to prepare him for future duties. The 31-year-old Duke of Cambridge arrived at the prestigious institution yesterday to begin the course, which is intended to give him an understanding of agricultural business and rural communities. Like many students he travelled by train to Cambridge in eastern England from London for his first day - but unlike others the university’s vice chancellor was on hand to greet him. Stolen race car found A rare 1970 Rennmax race car worth $320,000 has been found, less than 12km from where it was stolen. The yellow race car, with the Repco Brabham engine used by Sir Jack Brabham to win the world championship, was stolen from a factory in southeast Melbourne some time between 11am on December 21 and 10am on December 22. ‘Record-smashing’ spending Festive season shoppers were ringing the tills in recordbreaking fashion according to the latest Christmas spending figures.

Paymark, which processes around 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, said “record-smashing” spending on both Christmas Eve and Boxing Day saw December spending up by 7.5 per cent on 2012.

The firm also recorded a strong seasonally adjusted month-on-month spending result, increasing 1.7 per cent from November to December.

The figures indicate a continued upswing in spending on the network across 2013, culminating in a particularly buoyant Christmas period.

“Following record-smashing spending on both Christmas

communities,” he said.

The number of job losses was not given by the company, but Amalgamated Workers Union New Zealand secretary Calvin Fisher said more than 100 jobs were likely to be lost from the open pit crews and mine technicians.

Otago Chamber of Commerce chief executive John Christie said the cuts were “devastating” news.

“They are a big and important employer and they’ve been part of our region for over 20 years now, so this won’t be welcome news by the people involved, or the wider community.” - APNZ

The loss of more than 100 jobs at Macraes Open Pit as part of a cost-cutting measure by Oceana Gold has been described as a body blow by community leaders.

It is understood 106 people will lose their jobs, leaving just 47 to work the open cast mine.

Oceana Gold managing director and chief executive officer Mick Wilkes said that at the present gold price, the Macraes open pit had a mine-life until the end of 2017, and the mine-life for the Frasers underground

mine was to mid-2015.

Macraes is New Zealand’s largest gold mining operation, employing between 600 and 700 staff in the Macraes open pit, the Frasers underground and the adjacent processing plant.

An estimated 60 to 70 people attended a meeting in the East Otago High School hall on Monday afternoon when Oceana Gold announced its intention to “reoptimise” its operations at Macraes open pit.

Workers declined to speak after the meeting, following company instructions.

Twenty-nine entries from the Ashburton 4000 has helped boost the number of District entries in this year’s New Zealand Dairy 3500 Industry awards to a record 572.

Fifteen young people from Ashbur3000 dairy industry are among the 292 ton’s 14-Oct 11-Nov entered 09-Dec in the 06-Jan industry newcomers dairy trainee of the year competition, with six sharemilkers and eight farm managers from the district vying for titles in other sections.

Seven members and invited guest, Judy Hay, attended our December meeting.

We enjoyed a very tasty lunch, and after a really nice catch-up chat a small meeting took place.

Members were thanked for their work towards the tray at the A&P Show, and praised for their prizes.

Thanks also to Shirley for doing the flowers for the hospital.

Christmas presents were exchanged and president Veronica wished us all a very Happy Christmas.

The December meeting commenced with a group photo with the many trophies won during the year.

As it was the Christmas meeting members enjoyed a potluck lunch with a variety of dishes of lovely food.

The meeting started with the Aspirations followed by the general meeting with a report on the 50th jubilee dinner to be held in February, with sister WI and past members being invited to attend.

Several raffles were drawn during the afternoon. Two members also had birthdays during the month.

Motto – There’s no love more sincere than the love of food.

Roll call – Donations of small gifts for children under eight years and covered shoe boxes for birthright had a great response.

The Northchurch Trophy for three truffles and a hand-made Christmas card was tied. Pauline Palmer and Joan Henderson gained equal points.

Members and four husbands met in December for our Christmas lunch.

After lunch members adjourned to the hall for a short meeting. Joy welcomed everyone.

Condolences were extended to our member Colleen Cockburn for the loss of her sisterin-law and former member June Stericker.

February’s Founders Day was discussed and president Joy and Colleen Cockburn will attend the Federation Jubilee.

EASY SUDOKU

Nashi upside down gingerbread pudding 50 g butter ½ C brown sugar + ¾ cup brown sugar, extra 2T golden syrup + 1/3 cup golden syrup, extra 3-4 nashi pears, peeled, quartered 2C self-raising flour 1t baking soda 1t ground ginger 2 eggs 1 cup milk ■ Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line a 23cm cake pan with baking paper. Melt together the butter, first measure of brown sugar and golden syrup, stirring to make a smooth mixture.

■ Remove the cores from pears and slice each quarter into 3 slices. Arrange the pear slices in a decorative pattern over the lined base of the pan. Pour over the caramel mixture.

■ In the bowl of a food proces-

sor, place the flour, baking soda, ginger and second measure of brown sugar and pulse until well mixed. Add the eggs, milk and second measure of golden syrup and blend until smooth and golden.

■ Pour the gingerbread mixture over the pears. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until a skewer can be removed cleanly from the centre. Leave to cool for at least

10 minutes before inverting on to a serving plate.

■ Serve with ice cream, custard or whipped cream. Drizzle with golden syrup if desired.

Windies thrash Black Caps

Cricket fan pockets the cash

By DaviD Leggat No one saw this coming - the result maybe, certainly not the scale of the outcome.

Just when New Zealand seemed well set to wrap up the ODI series to follow the test rubber, the West Indies mugged them at Seddon Park.

They piled on their highest ODI score, 363 for four, then rolled New Zealand for 160 in just 29.5 overs, to square the five-game series 2-2. What’s more, the defending world T20 champions will now go into the two-game contest in the shortest form feeling rather good about life.

The result was New Zealand’s second heaviest ODI defeat, after a 215-run drubbing

by Australia in the 2007 World Cup at Grenada.

The less said about New Zealand’s chase the better. They were trying to run up a mountain in sneakers and from 65 for five there was no comeback.

By then captain Brendon McCullum had thrown his bat nearly as high as the ball flew far - he lost his grip on it - Martin Guptill had been bowled by a beauty from the irrepressible Dwayne Bravo, while Jesse Ryder, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor had found a range of ways to get out.

It’s been a depressing tour in several respects for the West Indies; well beaten in the tests and seemingly on the way out of the ODI series after being on the wrong end of the two rain-affected games in the South Island.

However they found loads of character to display their best expansive batting qualities at the final opportunity, after being sent in.

Kieran Powell, the 23-yearold from Nevis, may be feeling homesick - he hasn’t seen his house since the start of September due to touring activities - and had had an ordinary tour until yesterday.

But it was his dazzling display from the start which gave the West Indies the ideal platform.

The lefthander made a mess of Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan’s first, brief spells and the opening stand with Johnson Charles produced 95 in 12 overs.

It seemed as if New Zealand’s bowlers had pulled the situation back for a time - experienced Kyle Mills doing a good holding job in his first five overs.

However once Kirk Edwards found his range and the ebullient Bravo got going, the ground simply wasn’t big enough, nor the bowling remotely consistent or accurate enough.

Edwards had his slices of luck - notably inside edging the four to reach his maiden ODI hundred - but whether he was imbued with a hefty dose of the right spirit by his skipper or simply recognised early on that this would be his day, he struck

the ball lustily, while man of the match Bravo was outstanding in his second ODI ton.

From overs 41-45, the pair clobbered 75.

It positively rained boundaries and New Zealand had no one sufficiently parsimonious to apply the brakes.

Even the usually reliable Mills’ last three overs went for 39.

At times Bravo toyed with the bowling - which was guilty of contributing 11 wides - as the pair put on 211, the alltime best stand against New Zealand.

His hitting was invariably clean and he mixed the brutal with the deft, while Edwards piled on his second 50 runs in only 28 balls.

“It was a terrible day for us,” McCullum said last night, with a hearty dose of understatement.

The first of two T20 to round off the tour is at Eden Park on Saturday.

Ferrer made to work for victory

By MichaeL Brown David Ferrer has made a career, not to mention a lot of money, out of his fighting qualities.

He’s not blessed with a booming serve or big forehand but there are few who can slug it out quite like the diminutive Spaniard. The world No 3 needed to draw on his battling abilities again last night in his second-round match against American qualifier Donald Young, eventually prevailing 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-1 in one hour 55 minutes.

It was a result the tournament needed - Ferrer is top seed and four-time champion but he was pushed and the first set, in particular, was a battle.

Both players struggled to hold serve in the opening set and at one point there were six consecutive breaks of serve.

Young played near the top of his game at times, illustrating why he rose to 38 in the world in 2012 and was once seen as one of the brightest prospects on tour before an inexplicable rot set in, and eventually claimed a set that last 59 minutes 7-5 in the tiebreaker.

From there, Ferrer started to take control. He lifted his game, often finding the lines beautifully, and attacked Young’s forehand and the American

couldn’t maintain his standard under sustained pressure.

Ferrer broke Young early in the deciding set and soon set up a quarter-final against compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who emerged from a marathon three-setter with Colombian Santiago Gilermo.

Young’s defeat was a rare lowpoint for American players who filled three spots in the quarter-finals. World No 14 John Isner eventually overcame qualifier Lukas Lacko and a sore ankle to win 7-6 (1) 3-6 6-2 and he was joined in the last eight by compatriots Jack Sock and Steve Johnson.

Sock beat second seed Tommy Haas 6-4 6-4 - at world No 12, Haas is the highest ranked player Sock has beaten in his career - and he will now take

on Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut who ousted sixth seed Benoit Paire.

Sock used his serve and big forehand to good effect against an out-of-sorts Haas, who was playing his first match of the year given he received a firstround bye as one of the tournament’s top four seeds.

“It’s exciting but I have to keep my head looking forward and get ready for tomorrow,” Sock said, his deadpan voice betraying his apparent delight. “It feels good. I came into the year with high expectations. I put in a lot of work in the off-season and feel good about my game.

Hopefully I can keep it going.”

Sock, who received a wildcard for the Heineken Open, spent considerable time in that off-season training with John-

son. Johnson gained entry to the tournament only as a lucky loser, after earning a place in the main draw when Gael Monfils withdrew through fatigue.

He started the day by beating former world No 8 Marcos Baghdatis 7-5 6-7 (3) 6-4 and followed it up with a 7-5 6-4 defeat of fourth seed and world No 20 Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

“There are so many ups and downs [in tennis] but to beat those two guys on the same day is pretty special,” Johnson said.

“Marcos is an incredible guy.

I can remember watching him in the final of the Australian Open at 1am or 2am in the morning. I have watched him since I was 13 so it was an unbelievable morning for me and then to come out and beat Kevin ... it’s been quite a day.”

It’s been an interesting period for Johnson. Last week the world No 160 was beaten by New Zealand’s Rubin Statham at a Challenger event in Noumea and late last year he made a “rookie mistake” when he failed to enter for the Australian Open qualifying tournament but earned a wildcard for the year’s first grand slam instead by winning the US Tennis Association play-offs which guarantees a place in Melbourne for the winner. - APNZ

A fan in Hamilton has pocketed $100,000 from a day out at the cricket after grabbing a onehanded catch in the crowd.

Michael Morton claimed the catch from Kieran Powell’s bat in the sixth over of the final one-dayer between New Zealand and the West Indies, instantly earning a bumper pay day.

A promotion by Tui saw fans around the country flock to the cricket this summer wearing orange t-shirts, with the promise of $100,000 for any to take a one-handed grab.

Morton was still coming to terms with his good fortune.

“It’s a bit unbelievable, man.

A bit weird to honest,” he said.

“I was stoked that I caught the catch. It would have been a very long afternoon if I dropped it.”

Team misses semis berth A composite Mid Canterbury bowls team has narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth in the women’s fours section of the national bowls championships in Dunedin.

The four of Linda Boyd (Rakaia), Maureen Sullivan (Methven), Wendy Watson (Allenton) and Sandra Holdom (Allenton) lost in the quarterfinals yesterday to the team which had earlier knocked out another top Mid Canterbury contender, Sandra Keith, and her Dunsandel team.

The Mid Canterbury four lost to Black Jack Mandy Boyd’s four in the quarterfinals, 20-8.

Mandy Boyd’s team knocked four-time national champion and world champion Keith and her four out of the tournament the day before.

The Mid Canterbury four of Boyd, Sullivan, Watson and Holdom had a dream run at the tournament up to the quarterfinals, beating two much fancied teams. They first beat the four headed by Bowls New Zealand president Ann Muir 16-14, before beating the four skipped by Black Jack Jo Edwards, 15-14.

The quarterfinal loss means there’s no now Mid Canterbury bowlers left in contention.

Roulston chases fourth title

Hayden Roulston is lining up for a tilt at a fourth elite road national title this weekend to join a select group.

If defending champion Roulston can clinch back-toback wins, on top of his 2006 and 2011 victories, he would be one of only four riders to have won four national titles.

Nick Carter and Jack Swart both have four wins while only Gordon McCauley has five victories.

■ BASKETBALL

A fourth title, and the ability to wear the national colours for another season in Europe, would be an ideal birthday present, with Roulston turning 33 on Friday.

The nationals begin on Friday with the men’s and women’s time trials at Lincoln, with Ashburton’s Jason Christie in the men’s 40km TT and Hinds’ Lauren Ellis in the women’s 25km TT. On Saturday Ellis, an Olympic track rider, will look to cap a strong 12 months on the road in the 120km women’s race.

It’s a small but select field of 24 led by five-time world championship medallist Linda Villumsen, as well as fellow London Olympians Joanne Kiesanowski, Rushlee Buchanan and Jaime Nielsen.

Last year Ellis showed her ability on the road winning the Benchmark Cycling series, winning three of the six races, and was the first ever female winner of the Twizel to Timaru Classic.

Roulston will then face a tough field over the gruelling 183.7km men’s course on Sun-

day with last year’s runner-up George Bennett, Jack Bauer and his fellow Trek Factory Team rider Jesse Sergent, as well as fellow Ashburton rider Jason Christie set to race.

Fellow pro-riders Sam Bewley and Greg Henderson will miss the nationals recovering from injuries.

The 50-strong start list also includes 2012 winner James Williamson, two-time under-23 winner Michael Vink, and London Olympians Shane Archbold, Westley Gough and Marc Ryan.

Uphill battle

By Kris shannon A flabbergasted Casey Frank could only turn to film’s greatest franchise to explain his own personal trilogy.

“It’s along the lines of the Godfather clause,” he said of his short-term return to the Breakers. “Just when you think you’re out, they pull you back in.”

The defending champions, in dire straits and in desperate need of reinforcements, this week made Frank an offer he couldn’t refuse, luring him from the commentary booth to the playing court for tomorrow night’s game against Melbourne.

The naturalised New Zealander was a foundation member of the club 10 years ago but, after a second stint in 2005, could usually be heard calling home games alongside Andrew Mulligan.

Now, instead of critiquing players, he has been tasked with helping them improve, a leap that speaks volumes about the position in which the Breakers currently find themselves.

Turners Coulson Immigration Lawyers’ principal solicitor Ray Turner said if Packer served more than a year in prison he would be liable to have his special category visa cancelled under section 501 of the Migration Act 1958. “If that happens and we couldn’t get it overturned, he could never, ever return to Australia for any reason, which would effectively kill his rugby league career unless they send him off to England.” Packer, 24, was sent to jail for two years for seriously assaulting an expat New Zealand man in Sydney in November after he was asked to leave a bar for being drunk. Packer’s appeal will be heard on February 11. Mr Turner said Packer could still be deported if he served less than a year or was asked to do community service because of a character test he would still have to meet. CLUB NEWS Ashburton Bowling Club Christmas has passed and New Year has brought in some strange weather systems. Glad we do not have to forecast for you readers. Some bowls were played and some cancelled because of the changes. Cotula Cup on Dec 28 and 29 was going to be two great days of bowls, alas, it was only one day (because of rain). The winners were a home team of Jo Ryk, Murray Anderson, Mike Quinn and Doug Kinvig. Well done. Dorothy Cup was also cancelled prior to Christmas because of weather conditions. Names please on the board and the new date to be arranged shortly.

Friday Triples at Allenton Jan 3 was won by our President (GT) Graham Taylor, John Lilley and Roy Keeling with 3 wins, and 16 ends. 4th was Charlie Leech, Alan Millar and Mike Quinn with

2 wins and 13 ends. This was played in very windy conditions. Ashburton Ladies played the Drawn Pairs on Tuesday 7 Jan and 1st was Heather Goodall and Shirley Johnston with 3 wins and 22 ends. 2nd Leonie Spargo and Lois Connell 2 wins and 1 draw also 22 ends.

Ashburton Rose Group On Wednesday December 11, President Pauline O’Leary welcomed 17 members to the monthly meeting.

We had apologies from Joan Lawrence, Kathy Collie and Bev Tuck.

As we had no speaker, Pauline spoke on the World Rose Convention in Palmerston North.

She attended with Daphne and Barry Rissman.

She said the show of roses was fantastic and they had a lovely weekend.

Daphne spoke on the lectures she attended.

Pauline and Daphne also attended the Rose Show in Timaru. Both did very well with their roses.

We had a lovely show of roses for our Table Rose Show and points awarded were 1st Pauline O’Leary, 2nd Audrey McKay, 3rd Perry Jowers.

Our next meeting will be a fish and chip tea in the domain.

The meeting concluded with a Christmas supper and exchanging a small Christmas gift.

Hernandez signs new deal for Phoenix There was more good news for the Wellington Phoenix yesterday with Costa Rican international Carlos Hernandez signing on for another year.

Hernandez joined the Phoenix this season on a one-year deal with an option for a second year and, with both player and club keen to take up the option, the contract was signed yesterday.

“I am really happy in Wellington,” Hernandez said.

“I have settled well and now my family is with me it is even better.”

Hernandez was also pleased with the way the team was playing and predicted 2014 was going to be a good year for the Phoenix.

“The team is playing really good, attacking football and is more confident now that we have three wins in the last three games,” he said. “I also think I will play better in the rest of the

season and I’m sure we will make the finals. Once that is achieved anything can happen in the playoffs.”

Coach Ernie Merrick was delighted with the news Hernandez would stay for at least another year.

“Carlos is a key player for us and to have him settled and here for next season as well is good for everyone.”

Sporting holiday thing of the past

I

t was once known as the silly season; the rugby types had long forgotten where their boots were, and wouldn’t be thinking about them for several months yet, the cricketers and tennis players were on a long Christmas break, everyone was at the beach and the only sport anyone had in mind was cricket on that beach, much like the ANZ ad with Bondy bowling you’ve seen a million times in between overs at the Black Caps matches.

For the exception that proves the rule, those with longer memories will remember the oldies perched over radios listening to cricket on Christmas Day; yes the Bradmans and Truemans of this world were doing their thing on the cricket pitch while everyone else in the world was tucking into Christmas dinner.

How things change.

Our top netballers are heading to England to warm up for the Commonwealths, all the Super Rugby franchises have long been immersed in pre-season training, and instead of wall-to-wall movies on the telly, there’s live sport.

Lots and lots of it, of each and every denomination.

English football was always there in the old days, but only watched by desperate ex-pats supping their warm beer and thinking of merry olde England - now its a multi-zillion dollar industry with a massive following, a following that has spawned the A-League and high interest in competitions all around the globe in the world’s beautiful game.

That Karl Budge must be an incredible salesman: getting Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic to Auckland is a stunning achievement. In a big game at the Brisbane tournament, a senior men’s player took a few moments too long to prepare for his serve; then when he was about to throw the ball in the air the umpire stopped him and issued a nonsensical Play-Will-Be-Continuous warning. The players stared at him incredulously, while he gave the crowd a silly ‘I’m only doing my job’ gesture, which promptly made him a front-runner for Officious Prat of the Year, which he should win comfortably.

The World Championships have been played over the past few weeks, and they have been brilliant.

Beware, it’s a very addictive sport to get caught watching!

and The Machine all fought it out for top honours (and lots of money), fantastic stuff.

Then there’s cricket.

The Black Caps are operating as normal; every now and then they produce something spectacular (like a world record century), and you think wow, they’ve finally got it together, but maybe with the young guns currently in the ranks they might actually go on with it this year!

The bowlers will have to get used to getting hit like they were last night though, there’s some fine cricketers wearing Indian colours about to land on our shores.

On a cricket show this week Allan Border and a few other experts gave our fellas a fair chance against India in the next month, watch this space on that one.

The Aussies look like they’re on the way to the top of the test ladder after destroying the Poms, with huge competition for spots on their bowling roster; their trip to South Africa will be a cracker, and good for night owls at that.

But the Big Bash is where the action is, a competition now in its third year, with lots of bugs ironed out, and a heap of teams chock full of superstars fighting it out with games on most nights, super stuff.

Go the Scorchers!

There’s the defending-champion Breakers looking awfully wobbly in their competition, Steven Adams has revived Kiwi interest in the NBA, American football has a strong following, the golfers are well catered for, and I see the maniacs who venture to the Isle of Man for the legendary TT races are poking their noses up again, if all that’s not enough I’m sure there’s a tiddlywinks tournament somewhere for the diehards for whom that lot isn’t enough.

John Snowden is aiming to make history at the national fullbore rifle shooting championships, and Ballinger Belt series, which starts at Trentham on Saturday.

While the Ballinger Belt has been won by a number of people multiple times, it hasn’t been won by the same person in consecutive years since the late 1800s.

Snowden won the elusive and

prestigious belt for the first time last year and while he would love to defend his title and is in good form, he knows it won’t be easy.

Snowden, who won gold in the pairs at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi four years ago, has made the long-list of potential shooters to again wear the silver fern at this year’s Commonwealth Games and this year’s nationals and belt series is just another step on the way to that ultimate goal.

“I’m confident and I’ve got the gear going right, but it hasn’t really been the focus. I’m thinking of it as a build-up to the Games,” Snowden said.

Snowden has been shooting for about 20 years and has been in the country’s top 10 for probably about the past 15 years.

He’d been within a sniff of the Ballinger Belt many times, but last year was his first win.

Shooting was such a mental sport and much of it was on the day.

“There’s been other national shoots where I feel like I’ve shot really well, just one or two mistakes, and that’s been enough to put me out,” Snowden said.

“Last year I made a lot of mistakes but everyone else was making more, so I didn’t necessarily feel I had the best shoot, but I won.

“I can never really say I’ve had a match where I’ve put together the perfect shoot and won.”

He’s hoping that might change in the coming days though.

Snowden will compete at the nationals along with his wife Coby, and fellow Ashburton Rifle Club members John Fleming, Peter Newman and Brian Hawksby.

The week-long competition features a number of shoots and titles, but they will all be in action during Monday’s North versus South match.

Snowden’s shot at defending the Ballinger Belt begins on Wednesday with the first qualifying matches are held.
