The skies above Ashburton are abuzz with sound of more than 65 planes that are descending on the district from around New Zealand for the biennial Great Plains Fly-In. Ashburton Aviation Museum secretary Warren Janett says they are expecting about 68 planes to make the Ashburton Airport home over the weekend. Most planes arrived throughout Friday, beginning competing in a range of events to see who will be crowned as champion of the event at the gala dinner being held tonight. “This would be one of the better years we have had,” he said. “It is held alternating with the North Island but last year there was bad weather and many people weren’t able to get in to the location last year and they were keen to get down here. “This year the weather is just perfect.” The defending grand champion John Hansen is back in his custom built Hansen Deuce, a plane he built himself off a base design, improving it with a larger engine amongst other improvements. “I finished it in 2015, it is modelled off an older plane but is my own design with about 70 per cent changed,” he said.

“I took the design right back to scratch and improved it from there.” Based in Te Awamutu, it took Hansen approximately five hours to make the trip down to Ashburton. “It is not business class but it is

reasonably comfortable,” he said. Guest speaking at the gala dinner tonight will be former Ashburton girl Anna Lovatt, who currently flies planes for the Royal Australian Air Force. “Hopefully I will be able to share a different angle of flying,

there are probably a handful of ex-military pilots here but it will be fun to share some stories,” she said. “Hopefully there will be some young ones there that I might be able to inspire (to become pilots). “I spend a lot of time with peo-

ple who fly for work so it is nice to come here where people are here for the passion of it.” The airplanes will be flying in convoy to Lake Heron from 11am today and should return by 2pm where the public are invited to view the planes.

Evacuations, phones out Ground crews were to work through the night last night after Nelson residents were evacuated after a second fire broke out in Walters Bluff. A man has been arrested, near where the fire broke out, for disorderly behaviour. Air operations ceased after reports of a drone at the Walter’s Bluff incident, The Tasman-Marlborough Fire Area Facebook page reported. “Please, if you know whom this is please ask them to stop,” the statement read. Police have not said if the arrest is related to the fire in the area. At an official briefing from emergency services last night, Fire and Emergency NZ incident John Sutton said so far they had managed through the day without significant growth in the fire. “If this continues on for today, it’ll put us in a good situation tomorrow (Saturday).” Ground crews would work throughout the night, Sutton said. Deputy incident controller Grant Haywood said about 3pm yesterday an additional fire spread rapidly through Walters Bluff hill threatening six residences. The only property loss had been a deck on one of the properties, he said. The fire is located in Sir Stanley Whitehead Reserve. Nelson City Council posted to Facebook saying, “If you’ve been evacuated following the Walters Bluff fire and you need accommodation; please go to the Saxton Stadium Civil Defence Centre at Saxton Field, Main Road Stoke.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reese praised firefighting efforts calling them outstanding, fast and effective. Five helicopters are in action on the hill and nearly 30 personnel from Canterbury councils have been deployed to help respond. The following roads have been closed; Cambria St, Weka St, Atawhai Cres and Milton St. People are also asked to avoid

A fire took hold in Walters Bluff in Nelson yesterday. QEII Drive and stay away from the surrounding area. Founders Heritage Park has been closed and the NBus Atawhai service has been suspended. A witness who works nearby, who has been evacuated, says the blaze sparked up after 2.30pm. “One of the girls saw smoke and we got a call shortly afterwards to evacuate. “It’s a big blaze, there are five helicopters here.” Telecommunications provider Spark said a cell tower in Wakefield was in the direct path of the fire. Flame retardant had been deployed at the tower, and the company was trying to bring in a back-up cell site. That meant mobile coverage could be affected in the area while the work was carried out. Earlier the council advised people stay out of area and close windows if they smelt smoke. A caller to Newstalk ZB named

Tony said he watched the flames go up. He said the blaze took hold very quickly and was spreading across the back of houses, and said it looked like they were ready to go up in flames. Matt Armitage, who lives about 8km away from the fire, said helicopters were going back and forth to fight the fire. “They got on top of it pretty quick, but because it is so dry it is still spreading,” he said. “There is a sea breeze coming through which is the last thing we need.” The fire located northeast of the city started just before 3pm and brings no respite for firefighters who have been tackling a large fire in Pigeon Valley near Nelson since Tuesday. Canterbury Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) group duty officer Gavin Treadgold said as of yesterday afternoon, it had sent an additional 22 response team volunteers to

provide support to the fire response. “The response we’ve seen from the community, emergency services and the CDEM efforts so far is outstanding,” he said. “We hope sending additional resource will help further strengthen the already great job they’re doing.” It is expected the deployment will last through the weekend. The Walters Bluff fire comes after the call was made earlier yesterday afternoon to start evacuating the 3000 residents of Wakefield as a result of the Pigeon Valley fire which started on Tuesday. Civil Defence recovery manager Richard Kirkby was encouraging residents to go and stay with family and friends. “We have opened up the Saxton Stadium and that is sufficiently big that if people need to have a place to stay that will be set aside for them to go and stay there.” - NZME

Hosing restrictions finally arrive The days of watering the garden, washing the dog, hosing down the car whenever you felt like it are over. Hosing restrictions were yesterday put in place for Ashburton, Tinwald and Lake Hood and that means residents can only use their hose, micro-spray or automatic watering systems on alternate days – houses with even house numbers on even dates and those with uneven street numbers on uneven dates. Similar restrictions apply in Chertsey, Fairton, Hinds and Mayfield. Level two restrictions, alternate day hosing from 6pm until midnight only, is in place for Methven and Mt Somers. Most summers hosing restrictions have been in place in December, but this year it has taken until February before consumption moved from moderate to high. Since the start of the month consumption has been sitting above 15,000 cumecs a day but prior to that, apart from spikes that sent consumption soaring above 20,000 cumecs December 26 and 30, water use has been moderate. Restrictions were put in place because exceptional demand for waer could sometimes limit the ability of water schemes to consistently deliver to all properties at required pressure. “The water restriction policy ensures conservation of water to even out demand which enables residents to continue to enjoy reasonable use of water for gardening and non-essential purposes,” said service delivery group manager Neil McCann. Restrictions are in place immediately and will remain in place until further notice.

Ashburton’s own amazing maize maze is back and ready to provide a touch a farm-life fun. The maize maze on Randal Hanrahan’s Ashburton farm on the outskirts of Ashburton is back for 2019 after strong winds ruined the fun last year. “We never opened last year as we were ready to go and 100km/h winds blew through and knocked it all about,” he said. While it might be his land that the maize grows on, it his kids who take charge of designing the maze each year. “You grow it in grids and mark it out with electric fence posts where you want maze bits to go, and when it starts to grow go through and spray it,” he said. “If you time it right you won’t have to do any work, but if you leave it too late it takes a lot of work to clear.” There is also a smaller maze included, designed by his eight-year old son Freddie. The maze opens today, and will run from 10am to 4.30pm, with entry $5 for adults and $3, and is located on 451 Rakaia Highway.

Southland and other inland highways around the lakes will have more than the usual numbers of motorcyclists this week and after the event. All road users should be prepared to increase following distances and slow down around motorcyclists for everyone’s safety, says Brown.

Sweeping changes to planning rules could see farmers having to rethink where they construct farm buildings as well taking a new look at building cladding. The Ashburton District Council proposes to change its district plan to include new rules around screening large rural buildings from neighbours and to ban buildings on sites near areas with conservation value or on sites where they will impact on an outstanding landscape. Included in the proposed changes are restrictions on building materials, limiting claddings to those with a reflective value of 40 per cent or less. A set back of at least 50 metres from public spaces and neighbouring property boundaries, buffer strips and a requirement to plant screening trees during the first season after building is completed will be part of the new rules. These will apply to buildings larger than 3000 square metres but when the plan change was discussed at this week’s service delivery meeting, councillor Lynette Lovett suggested the rules should apply to buildings 5000 square metres and larger. And plantings close to a shed were not what farmers would want, she said. The issue was about screening buildings and that wouldn’t necessarily mean planting beside a shed, it meant planting so the building would not be visible to neighbours or the public, senior planner Ian Hyde said. “We’re seeking to address buildings painted in highly reflective material and we’re seeing more buildings being constructed that are a larger size. We’ve had a workshop with representatives of the rural community on this and they’re reasonably comfortable with this, this has been developed in conjunction with them,” he said. The changes were about protecting the public’s view, Hyde said.

In brief Consents fall, values up Building consents issued in the Ashburton District were measured in falling numbers but rising values last year. The number of consents almost halved during the year, down from 1293 in 2017 to 687. When it came to the value of the work, however, this was up from $115.637 million in 2017 to $121.595 million last year. Over the final six months of the year, the council’s building services team issued 96.7 per cent of consents within their 20 working day time frame and 99.3 per cent of code of compliance certificates were issued within the required time frame.

Year 9s officially welcomed More than 270 Year 9 students and several new staff members were formally welcomed to Ashburton College yesterday with a powhiri at the school’s wharenui. The newcomers were led into the ceremony by Kaumatua Ti-

pene Philip and head of junior school Carolyn Clough. They were welcomed by principal Ross Preece as part of the school family. Year 10 to 13 students sang the school waiata with the newcomers responding.

While the start of year powhiri is the most significant large event held in the wharenui, it is well used during the school year as teaching space. The college wharenui opened in 1997 and the following week the carvings surrounding its en-

trance were created by master carver Vince Leonard. After more than 20 years those carvings now have significant weather damage and next week they will be removed and will undergo an extensive restoration process.

With pools in the EA Networks Centre closed for two weeks in early January, a stretch of hot weather saw the outdoor pool in the Tinwald Domain under pressure from large numbers of users. At times the pool was so busy staff had to introduce a one user out, one user in process to prevent over crowding. Maintenance work on the indoor pool complex was completed on time and to a high standard, facilities manager Steve Prescott said.

Polytechs shake-up The National Party says the Government’s plans to reform polytechnics and institutes of technology will lead to 1000 job losses, a radical centralised model, and the closure of polytechnics in the regions. But Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has rubbished these claims, adding that the Government needs to intervene in order to save polytechnics in the regions and stop job losses. Education Minister Chris Hipkins, however, conceded the proposals had “implications” for people’s jobs, but it was irresponsible to speculate about job losses. - NZME

Rakaia’s toilets not a place to linger

A colossal breach of trust

Rakaia’s public toilets are a disgrace and money needs to be spent on them urgently to bring them up to an acceptable standard, says councillor Lynette Lovett. The toilets were high use and it didn’t reflect well on the district to have a facility that was below par, she said at Thursday’s Ashburton District Council service delivery committee meeting. Council opens spaces manager David Askin said he was aware of the need for money to be spent in Rakaia, not just on upgrading the public toilets but also on the campervan dump station and on parking areas. He’s chasing a government regional tourism funding pool for funds to carry out this work. “We need a co-ordinated effort on this and we want to claw some money back from the government,” he said. Door counters on council-owned toilet facilities indicated that Rakaia’s had the second highest use in the district behind central Ashburton. If the council was doing a stocktake on its toilet facilities then it might need to look at additional facilities, mayor Donna Favel said, with places such as Devon and Digby Parks now well used by the community. A new toilet block recently opened in the Ashburton Domain’s playground area and the council has committed to replacing an elderly toilet block in Argyle Park with new facilities.

Stephanie Ann Elmiger, 44, gained her boss’ trust – he rewarded her with increasing levels of business and financial responsibility. She repaid him by siphoning off company funds to support the extravagant lifestyle she’d become accustomed to. Yesterday the solo mother faced her day of reckoning in the Rotorua District Court where Judge Tony Snell sentenced her to 2 years 8 months behind bars. He also ordered her to pay $192,594.17 reparation to the man she duped, Richard Blakeney-Williams Snr, owner of Taupo’s Central Motor Group Ltd. After a lengthy judge-alone trial last year, Judge Snell, in a reserved decision, found Elmiger guilty of more than 200 charges of theft by breaching a special relationship over two-anda-half years, beginning in November 2013. He told Elmiger she had breached trust, developed a sense of self-entitlement and had shown little or no remorse when interviewed by a pre-sentence reporter writer. At the start of the sentencing, Blakeney-Williams Snr was supported by his wife as he read a victim impact statement outlining the way Elmiger

had won his trust and confidence. He told how she’d gradually encouraged and convinced him to increase her responsibilities with the company he’d owned for many years. As a result, he entrusted her with management decisions and financial control. “I gave her the opportunity to run the company, I also regarded her as a friend. included her in family occasions, when we discovered the extent of her fraud involving my company, our family trust, my daughter’s business I couldn’t believe the scale of her deceit, her colossal breach of trust.” He had been forced to refinance his business and experienced extreme stress. He’d been hospitalised in Sydney for eight days suffering from a serious breakdown. He now relied on anti-depressants and sleeping pills to get him through his days and nights. Judge Snell began his sentencing by noting Elmiger had originally faced 435 charges, he’d dismissed 179 during the hearing. A total of 256 had required his decision in which he found her guilty of more than 200. He noted Elmiger had committed credit card fraud, concealed bank transfers and committed fraud with Central Motor Group’s payroll system, describing her offending as “bold and

blatant over a sustained period”. From victim impact statements he’d seen it was obvious it had a profound and dramatic effect on the Blakeney-Williams family, he said. Referring to a pre-sentence report, he said it was apparent Elmiger had been using the company’s money to support her lifestyle which included beauty treatments and improvements to her home. She had demonstrated a sense of entitlement, failed to accept responsibility for her offending and attempted to minimise it. “You have shown little or no remorse considering yourself the victim,” Judge Snell told Elmiger, later saying hers was sophisticated offending for personal gain. He noted letters from a past employer and Elmiger’s present boss who spoke highly of her and emphasised they continued to trust her despite the guilty verdicts she had accrued. Elmiger’s lawyer Jonathan Temm argued for a sentence of fewer than two years imprisonment which would have made her eligible for home detention, saying prison would do nothing useful for Elmiger. He submitted she was remorseful and could make immediate reparation from the sale of her home. - NZME

Rebekah is studying a double degree with a bachelor of science, majoring in environmental studies and a bachelor of law at Wellingtons Victoria University. Rebekah is incredibly passionate about climate change. She recently received special recognition at the university’s environmental studies conference for her presentation on climate change disproportionately affecting Pacific women in areas with gender inequalities. Late last year Rebekah applied and was chosen to be a delegate under the Aotearoa Youth Leadership Institute to attend the 24th conference of the parties to the United Nations framework con-

vention on climate change. Rebekah is optimistic about the potential to find policy solutions that economically, socially and environmentally benefit communities around rural New Zealand, and she is keen to contribute to environmental policy that will be of benefit to Mid Canterbury. In her spare time Rebekah volunteers for the Asylum Seekers Equality Project, which is a branch of the Wellington Community Justice Project run by law students which campaigns for equal treatment of convention and quota refugees who are arbitrarily distinguished. She also enjoys pub quizzes, playing piano, and maintaining her ability to speak French.

Tori is commencing her second year in a Bachelor of Nursing, studying at ARA’s Timaru campus. Tori’s aim is to continue improving her knowledge and gaining experience and qualifications to reach her long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

Mum’s letter to ‘Constable Toss Pott’ By HeatH Moore It’s not often police receive letters from the public. And it’s even rarer to receive a letter addressed to “Constable Toss Pott”. But that’s what New Zealand Police received in the mail from the mother of a speeding road user who was pulled over. According to the letter her son was pulled over while speeding along a straight piece of country road while on the way to an event and received a “large fine and demerit points”. While her address to police starts off in a rather negative tone, further down the message takes a surprising turn, with the mother thanking police for their actions against her son. In a hilarious but thoughtful letter the mother thanks police for keeping her son “alive”. “Dear Constable Toss Pott,” the letter starts. “Apologies, please read on ... “My son was recently pulled over, flashing lights and all. He spotted the police car and tried to slow, but unable to do so be-

fore ‘locked in’ on the radar. “I asked him what the policeman’s name was so I could contact him to say thank you. He replied with ‘Constable Toss Pott’, which I replied ‘well obviously he’s not, it’s because of him you’re still alive’.” But instead of lashing out at police, she explained their actions taught her son a valuable lesson. “Thank you for pulling my son over who was trying to break a land speed record on a straight piece of country road, in a hurry to get to something he felt was important enough to risk his life and the lives of the people he could have hit. “We have spent years whilst driving ourselves, and more so recently, with the teenagers starting to drive and getting their own cars, spending time talking with them stressing the importance of safe driving on country roads ... “We are just the parents ... What would we know?! “Constable Fantastic, I just want you to know that he has learnt a life lesson, he has had

the heart pumping, the sick feeling, the flashing red and blue lights, a large fine and demerit points taken. “I want to thank you for teaching my son that life lesson, and also my younger son as he was listening in on the consequences of speeding. “We have always said to our boys anyone can drive a car and anyone can drive fast, but handling that vehicle when things go wrong is a whole new board game that they don’t want to discover. “Thank you for taking the time in reading this letter and please don’t take offence to who it is addressed to. The NZ Police do a fantastic job. Thank you from one happy Mum.” The letter has since gone viral with police posting it to their Facebook page writing “Constable Fantastic, we’ll take it. Mum knows best.” Hundreds took to social media to applaud the mother for her honesty and thank police for doing a great job protecting Kiwis on the road. – NZME

Tasman Glacier drops more massive icebergs Massive icebergs have filled up at least a quarter of the meltwater lake at the foot of New Zealand’s largest glacier, the Tasman. The lake started to form in the late 1970s as the glacier rapidly retreated – fuelled largely by a warming climate – and it is now about 6km long. Glacier watchers estimate the latest release of ice from the Tasman Glacier, the ice river that flows past Aoraki/Mt Cook, extends at least 1.5km. More than three quarters of all the ice volume that existed in the Southern Alps at the end of the Little Ice Age in the mid-1800s had gone by 2016, glacier experts calculate.

But as well as saddening many mountain lovers, the Tasman lake and its icebergs thrill tourists who go out on the water in boats or look on from above the glacier’s steep, rocky walls. A guide, Richard Bottomley, posted an aerial photo of this week’s release of ice from the Tasman. “This is one of the biggest releases of ice from the Tasman terminal that I’ve seen,” he said. However, Glacier Kayaking owner and guide Charlie Hobbs said it was comparable to earlier releases. “It’s going to be awesome – it’s giving us a lot of icebergs.” – NZME

At the frontline of NZ’s

cyber

security

he head of New Zealand’s cyber security agency was once a part-time thistle grubber on his parents’ Mid Canterbury farm. The job was boring, recalls former Ashburton College student Andrew Hampton, but it taught him to work hard. Farming, as it turned out, was not his calling though he can still properly construct a hay stack on the small lifestyle block he owns just outside of Wellington. Stacking hay and fixing fences uses muscle memory from his youth, and helps balance the workload from his high-profile job as head of the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB). Hampton has spent his working life balancing the best interests of New Zealanders. As head of the GCSB, he leads an organisation that is charged with protecting the country from cyber-attacks and gathering intelligence on potential threats. He says New Zealand’s geographical isolation once kept it safe, but now the click of a mouse could unleash widespread disruption or theft of important trade and security secrets. The GCSB works closely with the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service and is, in the language of past world wars, a signals intelligence agency. Back then, the work was breaking codes and intercepting messages, and the work was top secret. Our GCSB gathers intelligence by electronic means in accordance with Government priorities and helps protect nationally-important organisations in the public and private sector from malware and cyber-attacks. Hampton says it’s all about balancing the great opportunities that are available now New Zealand can easily connect to the rest of the world against some potentially significant threats in return. These threats can come from individuals, groups and other countries. The GCSB’s around 500 staff work hard in a challenging, constantly-changing world of technology to make sure the cyber attacks don’t succeed. The agency’s latest report refers to over 300 cyber incidents involving nationally significant organisations in the past year and Hampton says 134 of those had indicators of being state-sponsored activity. Not only is the number of state-sponsored activity increasing, the nature of the threats is becoming more complex and the sources of them more diverse. Hampton says the work is fascinating and he travels overseas a lot. New Zealand

Mid Canterbury-grown Andrew Hampton sees the electronic world from a unique viewpoint, as head of the national cyber security agency. Reporter Linda Clarke catches up with him. is part of the Five Eyes partnership and shares intelligence with Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The workings of the wider world have interested him since he was a child. He went to tiny Flemington School (now closed) and had literally outgrown the place when he departed at 6ft 2in at the end of Year 8 (Form Two in his day) in 1983. He has lots of fond memories of the country school, where the roll was never more than 30 and encompassed the range from new entrants to Year 8. Not surprisingly, given his height, he was a handy runner and Ashburton College PE teacher Trevor Cochrane was pleased to add him to his secondary school athletics squad when he moved up. Farm life was busy. His father Peter ran a sheep and cropping operation, plus a piggery. It was Andrew’s job, with his big brother, to feed the pigs every Saturday and Sunday and there was always plenty of thistle grubbing in the school holidays. “As much as I loved growing up on the farm, I was always interested in the wider world. I read the newspapers. I listened to the radio. I was fascinated at what was happening nationally and internationally.” He distinctly remembers the day in April, 1982, when he was off to visit his orthodontist in Christchurch and Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands. It was the start of the Falklands War, a 10-week battle between the United Kingdom and Argentina. He also remembers, rather embarrassingly, that day because they parked near the Arts Centre in Christchurch and a load of weaner pigs escaped from their trailer. At secondary school, he remembers when the Labour Government came to power in 1984. It was the first Labour Government to win a second consecutive term since the 1930s. “I also remember sitting at school when the Rainbow Warrior drama was unfolding and then in October, 1987, when the world’s stock markets crashed.” His teachers at the time found a way to turn these big world events into learning opportunities. Hampton says Mark Gleason (and his pioneering NZ law class) and Lynne Macdonald (for her outstanding reading suggestions) were amongst his favourites. He embraced life at AshColl, which was one of the biggest in the South Island at the time with around 1500 students. He ran the 400m and 800m and set records, and he was

in a rock band. He remembers teaming up with brothers Mark and Grant Walsh and Ben Gordon in a 4 x 400m relay team that won a South Island title and went to nationals. By Year 11, his attention turned to study, giving up maths and science to follow his passion for English, history, geography and classics. “I am a firm believer that people should study what they find most interesting and be as broad as they can for as long as they can. “The really important skills are the ability to analyse different types of information, the ability to connect in writing or verbally, the ability to construct an argument and present that and the ability to hear a different view and modify your own.” With the blessing of his mum Pam, the first in her family to go to university, Hampton eventually headed to the University of Canterbury. He studied the arts, naturally, and came away with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in history and political science. He then completed a Master of Arts in history and graduated with distinction. He focused initially on New Zealand history and the country’s political systems, and that started an interest in the Treaty of Waitangi. His masters thesis looked at how New Zealand’s political system had evolved through the 1980s and early 1990s to better take account of Maori interests with treaty settlements, iwi devolution and the move towards MMP. It was a unique paper. To this day he believes that a proportional-based electoral system is good for the country and better reflects its diverse society. “One of the reasons we have greater political stability than some other countries is because we have an electoral system which better reflects the range of different views that exist in society and incentivises parties to represent them and find ways in which you can reconcile them and work together. “I notice in my current role, when I travel quite a bit and have exposure to other political systems, that we are pretty lucky with what we have in New Zealand.” Hampton took a break between degrees to go overseas and flatted in London with seven others, enjoying life and weekend trips to Europe. Returning, he finished his university studies, then worked for Te Puni Kokiri (Ministry of Maori Development), working on international indigenous rights issues. He was part of a government delegation to

the United Nations in Geneva and says it was a great opportunity so early on in his career as a civil servant. Then for eight years he was part of the Ministry of Justice’s Office of Treaty Settlements. “It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about our country and Maori culture and perspectives, and at the same time working out how to best resolve the very significant grievances of iwi in a way that works for all of New Zealand.” Hampton then changed roles within the ministry and became a senior courts administrator, overseeing the introduction of a digital transcription service (sped up the court process through remote transcription) and finding court space for Christchurch post-earthquakes. He next had a lead role in the Ministry of Education, dealing with the controversial closures of some Christchurch schools and addressing issues around Novopay. Hampton has been in charge of the GCSB since 2016. While he cannot talk about everything that he and the agency do, some of which is covert and involves access to classified information, his mission is to make the agency more open and accountable, and to build public trust and confidence in it. “In the past the agency was not as open as it could have been.” Part of the agency’s work in the past few years has been the development of a cyber security capability Cortex, which has saved New Zealand’s organisations of national significance some $67 million over the past two years. Hampton says the agency works only in the national interest and attracts some of the brightest and best people in their fields. These include foreign language experts, communications and cryptography specialists, engineers, technicians, legal, policy and support staff. He maintains a strict separation between work and home life, because it’s a job where you can’t really take your work home. There are no cyber rules for his children, who would rather ride horses, read books, or make music than be glued to their cellphones. And he is still in touch with his rock band mates Mark Hooper and Walt Friedal (they were called Barbed Wyre back in the day), and when he puts on a record from his vinyl collection he thinks of Record World in the Arcade. Visiting there on a Friday night was the highlight of his week as a teenager, now he has the electronic world at his feet.

Aid blocked at border Trucks carrying US humanitarian aid destined for Venezuela have arrived at the Colombian border, where opposition leaders vowed to bring them into their troubled nation despite objections from embattled President Nicolas Maduro. Two semi-trailers loaded with boxed emergency food and medicine rolled into the Colombian border city of Cucuta, which is just across the river from Venezuela. “The United States is prepositioning relief items – including food, nutritional supplements, hygiene kits and medical supplies – in Colombia so they are available to reach those most in need in Venezuela, as soon as possi-

ble,” said a US official. The focus of Venezuela’s political fight now hinges on whether Maduro will allow the aid to enter the country, a move anticipated in coming days. Maduro denies a humanitarian crisis exists and says Venezuela is not a country of beggars. The Venezuelan military has barricaded a bridge between the two nations with a tanker and two cargo trailers in an apparent attempt to block the aid. Opposition leader Juan Guaido, who requested the international assistance, said it is necessary in a country racked by shortages of food and med-

icines. Guaido, who has the backing of some 40 countries, including the United States, is seeking to oust Maduro following a 2018 election that many have denounced as a sham. Long-time allies Russia and China and several other countries continue to support Maduro. About a dozen human rights activists stood at the gated entrance to the Tienditas International Bridge on Colombia’s side, demanding Maduro allow the emergency aid to cross into Venezuela. They waved flags while Colombian police trucks carrying armed officers and other authorities drove by throughout the day.

Luis Escobar, a Venezuelan who now lives in Colombia after fleeing his crisis-ridden nation, said his wife has advanced breast cancer and urged Maduro to accept the aid. In tears, he described how his wife was unable to get treatment in Venezuela and that by the time they were able to see a doctor in Colombia, her illness had significantly progressed. “I am here because, unfortunately, my wife is going to die,” Escobar said. “But today I am here for Venezuelans who are suffering the same as my wife. The world has to know about this.” - AP

Frustration grows as migrant caravan stuck Patience is wearing thin for some of the 1600 Central American migrants spending their fourth day at an improvised shelter in the Mexican border town of Piedras Negras, across from Eagle Pass, Texas. Facing a long wait and a somewhat harsh welcome in Piedras Negras, some migrants asked to return to their home countries; the largest single group of those returning were from Honduras. A large police force stood guard outside the unused factory complex where the shelter is located, about 8 kilometres from the border. A chain-link fence rings the perimeter of the shelter. Federal and state officials confirmed that migrants without Mexican humanitarian visas weren’t being allowed to leave the shelter, and those allowed out temporarily were taken in vans under police

He didn’t want to give his name because he feared reprisals against his wife and children, who remain in Nicaragua. “We don’t have a problem crossing to the other side, Nicaraguans are very well received in the United States, a lot of people have gone over and have gotten asylum,” said the engineer. He said he also didn’t mind being kept inside the shelter. “We have to wait because we aren’t familiar with this place,” he said through the chain-link fence. “We know it’s dangerous because of the gangs and the kidnappings. I feel okay here inside, because I don’t know anybody on the outside, anyway.” - AP

Ozzy Osbourne, who is due in Auckland for a performance next month, is in hospital for some complications from the flu. The 70-year-old rocker’s wife, Sharon Osbourne, wrote on Twitter that doctors believe “this is the best way to get him on a quicker road to recovery”. It was announced last week that the United Kingdom and European leg of Ozzy Osbourne’s No More Tours2 tour was postponed because of doctors’ orders. He thanked all for wishing him a speedy recovery. He’s due in Auckland on March 16 for a show at Spark Arena.

Hilary hits back at troll If there’s one thing we’ve learned in 2018, it’s that nobody should go after Seven Sharp presenter Hilary Barry with an offensive remark. However, one Kiwi has missed that lesson completely, as Barry has once again hit back at a troll for body shaming her. Barry shut down a troll who felt the need to comment about her thighs. “Check out those thighs ... omg who is dressing these people,” the person wrote. So Barry did what she does best and slapped the troll with a zinger of a comeback. She shared a close up of her thighs and her said: “Hey Glenys, here’s a closeup of my thighs. I can send you a framed copy if you like, just reply with your address. Cheers, Hilary.”

Acaster in NZ for festival One of last year’s biggest breakout comedy stars is coming to New Zealand. British comic James Acaster released four Netflix stand-up specials under the name Repertoire last year to huge critical acclaim. Acaster will perform as part of the line-up for the Best Foods Comedy Gala, an event which kicks off the International Comedy Festival. He’ll perform in Auckland alongside Rhys Nicholson, Urzila Carlson, Paul Sinha and Melanie Bracewell at the Civic Theatre on May 2. Acaster will also be part of the Wellington line-up at The Opera House on May 5.

Footballer’s body recovered Police confirmed yesterday that the body recovered from a plane in the English Channel was that of Argentine soccer player Emiliano Sala. Dorset police made the announcement after a coroner’s examination of the body, which was recovered from the seabed wreckage of the plane on Thursday. Sala, who had just signed with Premier League club Cardiff, and pilot David Ibbotson were the only people onboard the small aircraft that disappeared over the English Channel last month. “The body brought to Portland Port today has been formally identified by HM Coroner for Dorset as that of professional footballer Emiliano Sala,” Dorset Police said in a statement. “The families of Mr. Sala and the pilot David Ibbotson have been updated with this news and

will continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”gators have not been able to recover the aircraft, which was flying from Nantes to Cardiff after Sala transferred from the French city’s team. An initial search and rescue operation failed to locate the plane but it was later discovered by the Air Accident Investigation Branch and privately funded search teams. Man sues parents for giving birth to him Samuel said: “I love my parents, and we have a great relationship, but they had me for their joy and their pleasure. “Life has been amazing, but I don’t see why I should put another life through the rigmarole of school and finding a career, especially when they didn’t ask to exist.” Samuel runs a Facebook page called Nihilanand where he regularly posts anti-natalist material to hundreds of followers. His mother Kavita Karnad Samuel, who is a lawyer, said she admired his boldness. “I must admire my son’s temerity to want to take his parents to court knowing both of us are lawyers,” she wrote. “If Raphael could come up with a rational explanation as to how we could have sought his consent to be born, I will accept my fault. “I’m very happy that my son has grown up into a fearless, independent thinking young man. An Indian man from Mumbai is suing his parents for giving birth to him “without his consent”. Raphael Samuel, 27, believes it is wrong to put an unwilling person through the “rigmarole” of life for the parents’ benefit and has compared giving birth to “kidnapping and slavery”. In a viral video, Samuel revealed to his followers why he is suing his parents. “I want everyone in India and the world to realise one thing that they are born without their consent. “I want them to understand that they do not owe their parents anything. “If we are born without our consent, we should be maintained for our life. We should be paid by our parents to live.” Posting on Facebook, he also asked his followers: “Why does society reward people who have unprotected sex?” Samuel is part of the “anti-natalist movement”, where younger people are resisting social pressure to have children.

The US Supreme Court yesterday rejected claims from a Muslim inmate who said his religious rights were being violated, clearing the way for the lethal injection to go forward. In a 5-4 decision, justices vacated a stay issued by a lower court that had been blocking the execution of Dominique Ray, 42. Ray argued Alabama’s execution procedure favours Christian inmates because a Christian chaplain employed by the prison typically remains in the execution chamber during a lethal injection, but the state would not let his imam be present. Justice Elena Kagan wrote in a dissent that the dissenting justice considered the decision to let the execution go forward “profoundly wrong”. Attorneys for the state said Ray had ample opportunity to visit with his imam before his scheduled execution, that only prison employees are allowed in the chamber for security reasons, and that the imam can visit him before he’s led to the execution chamber and witness the execution from an adjoining room. Prison system spokesman Bob Horton said Ray was visited by his imam both yesterday and Thursday and that Ray again renewed a request to have the adviser present — the request that has been denied. Other states generally allow spiritual advisers to accompany condemned inmates up to the execution chamber but not into it, said Robert Dunham, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, which studies capital punishment in the United States. The father who allegedly killed his baby in a murder-suicide was reportedly caught driving over the alcohol limit on the night the sixmonth-old went missing — but was let off by police. He was stopped for speeding and returned a low to mid-range blood alcohol level, but was given an infringement notice instead of being arrested after telling the officer a “sob story”, a police source said. The Queensland police officer – who is said to be “distraught” after learning of the deaths – reportedly searched the back of the car with a torch, but did not see a child. - NZME

Gas blast A gas explosion in a San Francisco neighbourhood shot flames high into the air yesterday and was burning four buildings as utility crews scrambled to shut off the flow of gas. Construction workers cut a natural gas line, San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne HayesWhite said. Authorities initially said five of them were missing, but the entire construction crew was found safe, and no other injuries were reported. “It’s pretty dramatic, but we have pretty good handle on it,” she said. - NZME

Trump lashes out Dominique Ray of any other state where the execution protocol calls for a Christian chaplain to be present in the execution chamber. Ray was sentenced to death for the slaying of 15-year-old Tiffany Harville. The girl disappeared from her Selma home in July 1995, and her decomposing body was found in a cotton field a month later. Ray was convicted in 1999 after another man, Marcus Owden, confessed to his role in the crime and implicated Ray. Owden told police that they had picked the girl up for a night out on the town and then raped her. Owden said that Ray cut the girl’s throat. Owden pleaded guilty to murder, testified against Ray and is serving a life sentence without parole. A jury recommended the death penalty for Ray by an 11-1 vote. Ray’s attorneys had also asked to stay the execution on other grounds. Lawyers say it was not disclosed to the defence team that records from a state psychiatric facility suggested Owden suffered from schizophrenia and delusions. - AP

It’s the issue that seems to rile him the most, and Donald Trump has now lashed out at “unlimited presidential harassment” after the Democrats announced a new probe into his finances. The President blasted House Intelligence Committee head Adam Schiff on Twitter, saying the Democrat was “going to be looking at every aspect of my life, both financial and personal, even though there is no reason to be doing so”. In a 2017 with the New York Times, Trump declared an investigation into his family’s personal finances was a “red line”. That line has just been crossed. - NZME

Gift rental trashed A generous Perth man who offered rent for free to a struggling family was gutted to find his home was trashed and his goods were stolen. In an act of kindness, Vim Vijaya offered the family free accommodation after they told him their previous house had burned down, 7News reports. The two women, who had two children with him, told Vijaya that they had lost everything in the fire. However, after letting them stay in his brand-new house, Vijaya realised he made a regrettable mistake when they disappeared two weeks later. - NZME

Check out a council meeting W

ith just over 10 months left to run until this year’s local body elections, one could expect the current crop of Ashburton District councillors to be upping their game and looking to raise their profile. And what better way to do that than around the council meeting table. The first round of council meetings (well public ones anyway) kicked off on Thursday and councillors were back, keen to get on with the job and clearly wanting to get business rolling. It was pretty much a bread and butter kind of meeting, no big decisions to be made, no opportunities for councillors to make a mark. But bread and butter is what the district actually runs on.

The big events, the high-profile projects, they’re what we all remember and like to talk about, but it’s the small stuff that keeps the district ticking. Our councillors are a mix of experience, inexperience, those who are confident and those who prefer to sit back and watch. It takes all types to make up a council and that’s exactly what we’ve got. With an election on the calendar there’s a lot of pressure,

not just on the current crop of councillors, but also on the community. If we want to cast votes come October, we owe it to our community to be informed voters. Ticking a box because you like a person’s name or their face is not what voting is all about. Voting is about knowing the issues, knowing what the candidates think and deciding who will do what’s best for our district. And there are only a few ways you can do that, not the least, turning up at council meetings, watching what happens, listening to who says what. First meetings of the year and there was just one person in the public gallery. Let’s hope that’s not an indication of what’s going to happen for the rest of the year.

Ahead of this year’s election there will be another option as the council will shortly be streaming action from council meetings. It’ll be slightly delayed but it’ll be up on their You Tube channel ready to watch. The delay issue is an interesting one, but it’s all about the instant world in which we live. Apparently there have been incidents at council meetings in other parts of the country where streaming has been real time and watchers have contacted councillors during debates telling them what they should think or say or how they should vote. Hard to believe, but maybe not. In any case, our council has wisely decided to remove that risk. With meetings available to watch, the burning question is,

how many people will bother to spend an hour or two watching. Judging by the interest in going to meetings real time, probably very few. For potential councillor candidates who’re at work during meeting times, the videoed meetings may well give them an edge when it comes to electioneering. If they spend the time watching debates, at least they’ll be up to speed with issues and up to speed with how a council meeting runs. Ask any of the current newbies and they’ll tell you it takes months to get the hang of the council system. Some are only now, two years down the track, on the right page. It’s a big year for all of us, let’s make the effort to get it right.

It’s one principal’s chocolate catastrophe

adbury’s are self-destructing quicker than Don Brash at Waitangi. With no regard to you and I, the humble chocolate-loving citizen of Utopia. They have announced they will be reducing the size of their family blocks of chocolate – but charge the same price for it! Even a humble, introverted, keep-my-opinion-to-myself uncivil servant, has managed to work out that we are being ripped off! This is more of a disaster than the repairs done to the potholes by the cemetery on Seafield Road. What seriously gets my Ministry of Education knickers in a twist (sorry if you are a visual person) is the definition of this heartless corporate calamity. Some officious Oompa Loompah, Willy Wonka Wannabe at Cadburys called the 10 per cent shrinkage ‘slight’. Slight! If I was at Weight Watchers having consumed 18 bars of chocolate before this happens, and weighed in at 100kg, and then the next week weighed in 10 per cent less at 90kg, no-one would call that slight. In fact I would become the poster child and replace Mel B. If the All Blacks began losing an average of 10 per cent of all games, we wouldn’t say they have had a slight loss of form. This is not a slight reduction, this is a calculated company move to keep pale, male and stale shareholders happy, by

Good people of Ashburton, prepare for war, we must take back what the Incas created from the humble cocoa bean and poured upon their human sacrifices. here is much to be thankful for this Waitangi Day week. There are different measures of a country’s quality of life. If income is the only measure we are a little way down. But if things like health, education, social welfare, environment and racial harmony are part of the measure we are near the top. The Corruption Perceptions Index has put us as the least corrupt country in the world. But sadly New Zealand has high levels of family breakdown, child poverty, family violence and suicide. The government and the police do a great job trying to address the problems. But the problems are deeper. Where do the values that produce this behaviour

come from? Can we teach values? Do Christians have a part? Jesus said we are to love our neighbours as ourselves. To illustrate this he told a parable about a Samaritan man (hated by Jews). He came across an injured man lying beside the road and at cost to himself helped the man. Jesus told us to go and do the same. He also spoke about humility, kindness and gentleness. Fortunately there are many Good Samaritans in our country. Let’s hope they are not

overwhelmed by the values of selfishness. So how can the good values be carried to the next generation? Parents struggle. Will giving every child the latest phone do it? Will more wealth do it? Role-models are certainly important and we must try to carry the right values to the next generation. Sometimes people can want Christian values but not Christ. This is understandable when we look at the behaviour of some so called “Christians”. But there are many genuine Christians in Ashburton sincerely trying to follow Christ. They describe themselves as “born again” and the values we have spoken of are becoming a

part of their lives. The values are in their hearts, far from perfect but trying. So Christians do have a part in the answer. One example is Christians Against Poverty which is helping people in Ashburton overcome poverty. Their desire to do this springs from their Christian faith. HSBC joins rates race By Tamsyn Parker

A third bank has joined the fray in offering a sub-4 per cent fixed term mortgage rate and this time borrowers can lock it in for three years. HSBC has launched a 3.95 per cent rate on a fixed term of either one, two or three years piling in with Westpac and Kiwibank to offer low rates. Westpac reignited a mortgage war in mid-January offering a one-year fixed term rate of 3.99 per cent – down 16 basis points on its standard rate of 4.15 per cent. The offer was meant to end on February 1 but a spokesman said it had now been “extended until further notice”. Meanwhile Kiwibank has also extended the offer period for its two year fixed term rate of 3.99 per cent from February 1 to February 11. The HSBC rates are only available to new customers who have a home loan of at least $500,000, existing customers who borrow another $100k or those with sav-

ings and investments of $100k with the bank. Chris Russell, chief executive officer of HSBC New Zealand, would not put a timeframe on how long its special would run for. HSBC typically ran a rate campaign at this time of year and Russell said it was hoping to stimulate demand in what was “softening market”. “We certainly are seeing a softening in demand.” Russell wouldn’t give specifics but said in terms of the overall percentage the decline compared to last year it was “meaningful”. “I think there is certainly a bit of looking over the should to the Australian market and wondering if it will happen here.” House prices in Sydney and Melbourne have fallen in recent months prompting concern that the falls might spread to Auckland. “What we have seen in Sydney and Melbourne does make Auckland seem expensive,” Russell said. National grid operator Transpower is being challenged to seek further efficiencies so that it can complete almost $90 million of work in coming years it may otherwise defer due to potential shortages of skilled contractors. The state-owned transmission company is seeking regulatory approval for its maintenance and upgrade programme for the five years starting April 2020. The rates fell after Statistics New Zealand said the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.3 per cent in the three months ended December 31, from a revised 4 per cent in the September quarter. Mortgage brokers say anyone due to re-fix their mortgage in the next 60 days should try and lock in an offer and those who were due to end their fix term in the next six to nine months should also weigh up the cost of breaking their mortgage to re-fix it at a lower rate. New Zealand’s high-profile tourist destination Queenstown was the most popular location for overseas buyers in 2018, although that demand tapered off once the government effectively blocked foreign purchasers in October. Foreign nationals bought 105 properties of the 1842 property transfers in Queenstown in calendar 2018, accounting for 5.7 per cent of transactions, Stats NZ figures show. That’s more than the 2.6 per cent national average – 3798 out of 146,073 – and trumped Auckland’s 5.6 per cent rate, or 2361 out of 41,868 transfers. Queenstown boasts one of the country’s most expensive streets, Speargrass Flat Road, and commands an average property value of $1.19 million, up from $693,045 in 2014. Last year, it attracted international headlines as a favoured bolthole for Silicon Valley billionaires. That foreign demand tapered off in the December quarter, which included the introduction of the government’s ban on foreign buyers of residential property. In that period, foreign buyers accounted for 3.7 per cent of Queenstown property transfers, down from 5.2 per cent in the September period and 5.1 per cent in the December quarter of 2017. Foreign buyers accounted for 2.3 per cent of all of New Zealand’s property transfers in the quarter, compared to 2 per cent in the September quarter, and 2.9 per cent a year earlier. “This quarter’s share of overseas

home buyers is comparable to recent results, when transfers may have been influenced by discussions about Overseas Investment Act changes,” property statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said in a statement. “The latest quarter’s results may not fully reflect the impact of law changes that took effect on 22 October 2018, as transfers aren’t counted in our statistics until the contract is completed, which could take a month or longer,” she said. Queenstown Lakes District Council had opposed the ban on overseas buyers, arguing that it undermined the local body’s strategy of attracting wealthy foreigners to develop a luxury property market.

Foreign interest in residential property was feared to be most acute in Auckland, where a shortage of new homes and cheap finance drove up prices to the point where policymakers dubbed it a crisis. Overseas buyers accounted for 4.9 per cent of transfers in Auckland during the December quarter, up from 4 per cent in September, but still down from 6 per cent a year earlier. Foreign nationals accounted for 1.2 per cent of property vendors nationally in 2018, or 1785 of the 146,073 transfers. strong international field in Trentham. Fresh off a second-place finish in the National Championships, Snowden shot a score of 691.39, six points clear of fellow Kiwi Malcolm Dodson in the 10th. Further up the leaderboard, it

was a domination job from the shooters from Australia, with Stephen Negus taking the gold medal and Paterson Cup with a score of 703.43, while his fellow Australian Mitchell Bailey took out second place, shooting 702.65.

Only one competition remains for the more than 450 shooters that initially descended on Trentham two weeks ago, the Palma Match, which is the team’s world championship event, for which Snowden is representing New Zealand.

Methven struggle again For the second weekend in a row, Methven were yesterday looking like struggling to be able to field a team for Mid Canterbury Cricket’s Muirhead Rosebowl competition. Methven are due to host Lauriston at the Methven Domain this afternoon, a week after having to default to Coldstream due to only having five available players. Yesterday Methven looked to again be having trouble rustling up enough players to take to the field and in danger of having to default for a second week running. If the game did get off the ground, life was likely to be a struggle on the field for the home side, too. The 2018/19 season had not been Methven’s, with wins having been hard to come by. Their Muirhead Rosebowl campaign started with a seven-wicket loss to Lauriston, and they suffered a similar fate at the hands of Tech the week following, before having to default to Coldstream.

This weekend’s matches were set to be a replay of the first round of the Muirhead Rosebowl, which began when the season restarted for 2019. On that day it was the Tech Stags who came out on top in their game against Coldstream, and the Stags had continued to dominate since then, winning three from three. Today, at the Ashburton Domain, Coldstream will be looking to get back to the sort of form which put them in the box seat to take out the Pritchard Shield competition before Christmas, before Tech beat them in the final round to claim the title. With just four teams in the competition due to the withdrawal of Allenton this season owing to a lack of player numbers, teams are coming back up against each other quickly this season, and each side is set to play each other just once more. Today’s games are the start of the last round, with the Muirhead Rosebowl final set down for March 2.

Opening batsman Chris Gayle has been recalled to the West Indies one-day international squad for the first two games of this month’s five-match series against England. Gayle has not played for West Indies since he scored 73 in an 18run ODI defeat against Bangladesh last July and opted out of the tour to India and Bangladesh. The 39year-old, who has scored 9727 runs and racked up 23 centuries in 284 ODIs, was recalled by the West Indies cricket board as it fine-tunes the squad ahead of the World Cup in England next May. - PA

Ferns clinch series win over India The White Ferns have sealed an impressive series victory over India, prevailing in a last-ball thriller at Eden Park yesterday afternoon. What looked to be a cruise to victory turned into a nailbiter, as India’s bowlers came alive at the death, and New Zealand’s batters couldn’t find the rope. With seven wickets in hand, the White Ferns needed just 21 runs from 23 balls for victory, but with Suzie Bates and Anna Peterson departing within three balls, suddenly the equation became a much more difficult nine off six balls. Katey Martin smacked a four from the first delivery, but was bowled the following ball, leaving Hannah Rowe and Leigh Kasperek requiring five runs from the last four deliveries. Some iffy Indian fielding led to a handy overthrow, leaving the Ferns needing three from three, and sure enough, three singles did the job to take a 2-0 series lead with just one game remaining. While they nearly gave it away in the end, the White Ferns were in a dominant position thanks to another excellent fightback. Once again, India’s star duo of Smriti Mandhana (36 from 27 balls) and Jemimah Rodrigues (72 from 53) set an excellent platform for the visitors, but no other Indian passed six as the White Ferns restricted the run rate, with Rosemary Mair especially impressive, taking 2-17 from her four overs. India could only muster 135-6 at the end of their 20 overs, and Bates set about making that a simple chase for the White Ferns. The woman with the most runs in international Twenty20 history led the way with a well-crafted 62 from 52 balls, and with cameos from Sophie Devine (19 from 16)

Once floated as a contender to captain Australia at the World Cup, Mitch Marsh now faces a fight to claim a spot in the 15-man squad after being overlooked in the ODI touring party named yesterday. With entrant numbers on the decline, the organisers of the Mt Somers Mountain Bike Race knew they needed to make changes. So, 14 years after it was first held, the Mayfield and Districts Lions Club organised event has been given a makeover and from now on would be known as the Mt Somers Mountain Challenge, and whether the changes they’d made paid off will soon become known. Race day is February 23 and early indications are that numbers would be good, event spokesperson Aubrey Aitken said. He said online entries are ahead of what they were at the same time last year, but from past experience they knew that a lot of people left entering until the last minute, and many didn’t enter until the day. So, at the moment, they really

had no idea what sort of numbers to expect to see lining up at the start line of the now-six events that made up the day. The Mt Somers Mountain Bike Race was three mountain bike races of varying lengths, but the new-look Mt Somers Mountain Challenge was six events, which it is hoped offers something to cater for a wider range of people. There were now two mountain bike events – a 31km challenge and a 23 foothills challenge – and they had been joined by two duathlons, a 12km mountain run and a two-hour walk. The foothills duathlon was a 17km bike and a 6km run, while the lowland duathlon option will cater for all ages. There are two options – a 17km bike and 3km run, or a 12km bike and 1km run – and there will be

under-8, under-13 and under-18 sections. One of the biggest changes this year is the fact the whole event will be staged on Mt Somers Station. In the past it had started and finished in the Mt Somers township, so the road riding element had been removed. Aitken said the event would not be possible without the support of the owners of Mt Somers Station, and they were fully behind the event moving entirely onto the property. A couple of big changes to last year’s final sole mountain biking event was the welcoming of e-bikes, which Aitken said were again welcome this year, and the Mycoplasma Bovis outbreak meant that all entrants had to take their bikes through a disinfectant bath before racing.

While the organisers and landowners were a little more relaxed on the M. bovis front this year, all bikes must be clean, and there would be a cleaning station on site for those bikes that weren’t up to scratch. The Mt Somers Mountain Challenge is one of the Mayfield and Districts Lions Club’s biggest annual fundraisers and it had raised more than $200,000 over the years. Around half of the proceeds annually went to Ronald McDonald House while the remainder went back into the local community, Aitken said. Last year numbers were down, due in part to a clash with a couple of events including Relay for Life in Ashburton and the Ride the Rakaia road cycling race, but it still raised around $9500.

jury opens the door for Henshaw to go back into the centres, with coach Joe Schmidt understood to be ready to restore Kearney to the No.15 jersey. Kearney approached the Six Nations chasing full fitness after a thigh issue and stayed with Leinster when Ireland headed off for warm-weather training in Portugal.

Schmidt handed Henshaw a chance to impress against England at fullback, the position where he made his name at Connacht and his Test debut in 2013. The British and Irish Lions’ centre was unable to thrive as England exploited a lack of cohesion in Ireland’s back three en route to their punishing four-try victory.

Connacht lock Quinn Roux should start in Edinburgh, with the dependable Devin Toner ruled out with an ankle injury. Tinwald notched up a narrow 4-2 win over Southern last weekend to ensure they maintained their spot at the top of the table, while Fairton moved into second spot on the points table courtesy of an even narrower win over the team that took out the season’s first round, Allenton.

That tie finished drawn 3-all on matches and sets, with Fairton winning it on a countback of games. Tinwald had headed into last weekend’s round with a fourpoint lead over both Fairton and Allenton, and by the end of that round they’d extended their lead to five points over Fairton, with Allenton a further two points back. Today, things could get turned on their head though, with Tin-

wald set to take on Allenton. If Tinwald wins, they are likely to maintain their spot at the top heading into the final round, but if Allenton won it could set up a mouth-watering final round with more than one team fighting it out for the title of the second round’s best. The other two winning teams from last weekend will also face off today, with Fairton set to take on Hampstead. Hampstead moved up one spot

Australia’s tennis darling, Ash Barty, turned Melbourne into “Ashville” during last month’s run to the Australian Open quarter-finals and if her form continues, she will fittingly be queen of the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains city. Barty laughed when Australian team captain Alicia Molik sent her a text last year to say the tie was in Asheville. “It was a funny coincidence,” Barty said. Barty is highest-ranked of both

Great Britain set up a winnertakes-all Fed Cup clash with Hungary but their victory against Greece was dogged by controversial line calls. Britain made it two from two to sit top of Pool A of the Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 going into the final round robin tie after Katie Boulter and Johanna Konta won their singles matches. But there were questionable line calls throughout and Konta’s opponent Maria Sakkari condemned the line judges as “the worst I have ever seen in my life”. Boulter’s opponent Valentini Grammatikopoulou also suggested the home judges were not playing fair as the matter cast a shadow over what was a thrilling tie. Boulter delivered another opening win as she battled hard to triumph 6-3 4-6 6-3 before Konta made sure the tie was in the bag after coming from a set down to beat Sakkari 4-6 6-2 6-3. Both sides were on the end of calls that looked wrong, but with no Hawkeye in operation the players had no choice but to accept the decision. Afterwards Sakkari, who is ranked one place higher than Konta at 38, did not hold back in her assessment of the officiating. “They are terrible,” she said. “Since the first round. Mid Canterbury holds a strong chance of success in at least one race at Sunday’s Hororata Trotting Club meeting at the Methven Racecourse. Local horses entering local race meetings aren’t exactly a rare thing, but to have 10 runners in a field of 15 set to face the starter in one event is quite a remarkable achievement with all horses coming from within the Mid Canterbury region. Such a huge number of runners from the district in one race is a rarity these days due to quieter numbers of trainers, so it’s an impressive feat. But weight in numbers doesn’t make it easier to select. In fact, each of the 10 runners engaged from this district in the third race of the day hold a chance of winning the race. It could be Laurence Hanrahan who has the last laugh though with his charge, Strong Enough, who has started favourite in both of his career starts for a second and third. He will have the services of Ricky May in the bike too which, at Methven, is a bonus in any situation. Seasoned campaigner Victor Tango is another strong contender in the race. The Rex Bennett-trained pacer has been in the form of his career recently and will be looking to get the elusive win on a track he’s

The Team Rogerson-trained Gift of Power was sent out a short-priced favourite in the Carters Ashhurst Pohangina Cup at Awapuni yesterday, and was only just able to get up and deliver for her supporters. The four-year-old daughter of Power was forced to settle outside pacemaker Passing Shot, with the Stephen McKee runner setting a blistering early speed. The Harness Million A brand-new race series, the Harness Million, was announced on Thursday. The series, a partnership between New Zealand Bloodstock Standardbred and the New Zealand Sires Stakes Board, will be open to horses that go through the sales ring. In announcing the new stakes race set-up, Martin Pierson from NZSBB remarked that it was an advancement on current or previous series’. “We’re excited about partnering with NZB to offer an enhanced Series,” he said. “The inclusion of weanlings in the mix will be a great addition and we believe that the prize pool will reach a million dollars.”. - NZHN
