Ashburton could soon have a new concept in housing for older people that will provide security, companionship and independent living that is affordable on a pension. Yesterday representatives of a range of community and social agencies met with Abbeyfields, a not-for-profit social housing organisation to hear how the international concept could be used in Ashburton.

The project involves providing accommodation for over 65s in private rooms within a large house, where two meals a day are provided by a housekeeper. It was born in London in 1956 and now includes more than 700 properties across more than six countries. Abbeyfields houses have been built in 12 New Zealand towns and cities with work about to start on the 13th in Leeston. At yesterday’s meeting Peter Smale and Terry Foster outlined the Abbey-

fields concept, describing it as flatting for the elderly and saying it was based on the concept of providing an affordable living–social interaction package for pensioners who did not qualify for council pensioner housing but did not have enough money to buy into a retirement village.

Radio hosts Hamish Blake and Andy Lee got the star UK singer – who remained fully clad – to play privately in a dank inner-Melbourne venue that looked like it would normally be associated with frontal nudity and lewd acts. “Would anyone dare to believe what was written outside and come in to our very dodgy looking venue?” said Blake, who dressed as a “shadylooking spruiker” whose job was to bring in patrons. “I wouldn’t come in, if there was a dude with a beard and a hat, saying, ‘come in and see this’,” said Sheeran, who’s currently touring across Australia. All Black Sonny Bill Williams is taking time out from his busy sporting schedule to highlight the plight of Syrian children living in refugee camps in Lebanon. A series of fresh pictures have been released documenting the Unicef New Zealand ambassador touring a refugee camp and seeing what life is like for children whose lives have been affected by the Middle Eastern crisis. Tradition slammed A pre-Christmas Dutch tradition that dates back to the 19th century is sparking debate in New Zealand thanks to its controversial character Black Pete. Over the weekend, the Dutch community in Auckland gathered to celebrate the feast of St Nicholas, held every year on December 5. It involves people dressing up as Black Pete by blackening their faces with paint, colouring their lips red and wearing curly black wigs. Critics have taken to social media to condemn this year’s event, held at Dutch Delight restaurant in the North Shore suburb of Birkenhead, suggesting it is racist and does not belong in New Zealand. But the restaurant owner said he and his staff had received nothing but positive feedback and said it had nothing to do with racism. Also known as Zwarte Piet, Black Pete is said to be the companion and helper of Sinterklaas, a figure based on St Nicholas.

Antenatal classes to cost

Flatting lifestyle for pensioners explored

From next year parents-to-be will have to pay to attend the Ashburton Parents’ Centre’s antenatal classes. The centre has been funded by the Canterbury District Health board to provide free antenatal classes for more than six years, but that funding has now changed and the parents’ centre has been forced to introduce a charge for its classes. Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) general manager of planning and funding Carolyn Gullery said changes to the Ministry of Health’s specifications for providing free preg-

breastfeeding and practical parenting advice. The cost to attend the classes is set at $110 and is effective from next year’s first class on February 13. The charges had not affected demand and all expectant parents had been made aware of the changes, Mrs Broker said. The CDHB’s new free service – focused on reaching first time parents, people living in remote areas, Maori, Pacific and Asian parents – will begin in the New Year. It will also put more emphasis on how parents can keep healthy during pregnancy and will offer more support through

nancy and parenting education was the reason for the funding cut. Ms Gullery said the CDHB has invited organisations to submit proposals which would see them work with a new provider. However co-president Rachel Broker said Parents’ Centre national support decided to not submit a proposal and would instead run the classes at cost. Its classes, held on weekends, would continue to cover pregnancy through to labour and delivery, a maternity ward tour,

to six weeks after the baby is born. Ashburton’s free antenatal classes held at the hospital will continue until the new provider takes over. Ms Gullery said anyone booked into a class early next year would be contacted by the new provider who would advise parents about the location of the classes. More details about the new provider will be available in the New Year, she said. “We are confident they will look at the best method of delivering pregnancy and parenting education to expectant parents in Ashburton and surrounding areas,” Ms Gullery said.

Peacocks a nuisance They might not be the traditional neighbourhood nuisance in the Ashburton District, but a flock of peacocks have been disturbing the peace on properties near the Ashburton River. And the noisy birds have created a few headaches for council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle who said the noisy birds appeared to be free roamers who had no clear owners. “The birds are coming up from the river and we’ve had complaints from the owners of the property the peacocks are coming to at night and we’re looking at moving them to a temporary aviary,” he said. Council monitoring staff have staked out the peacocks’ patch from 2am to 5am to ensure the complaints had substance, Mr Catchpowle said. “The number of calls through the night was sufficient to lead to an abatement notice being served.” The problem, however, lay in identifying who actually owned the peacocks, he said.

Houses in other parts of New Zealand already had waiting lists and that demand would grow as baby boomers started looking at accommodation options, with more likely to be life-long renters, Mr Foster said. “If you really want to do this, get your community behind you and you’ll do it. It’s a big challenge, but if you could get something off the ground it would be great. Put together a committee and get things rolling,” he said. A house could cost up to $2 million, but there were a range of funding options that could be explored, and costs would be dramatically reduced if land was donated by a council or a church, Mr Foster said. A range of questions were asked about the option of buying older flats and renovating these and around costs and funding options. Another meeting will be held in the new year to decide whether the project moves to the feasibility study stage.

A Mid Canterbury school is in the process of becoming the first state primary school in the South Island to be accredited under the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Ashburton Borough School has just received confirmation that it is ready to be assessed to be accredited. Principal Sam Winterbourn said a time still needed to be confirmed for the assessment to decide whether they can be approved, he said. “It’s very exciting for the school.” The school had started looking into the programme nearly 10 years ago but they needed to ensure they had sustainable income streams. The initial membership cost was about $12,000 and other substantial costs included professional development and resources, he said. Funding has come from a number of businesses in the community. Because there has been a growth in schools offering the IB programme in Auckland, they would be sending some staff there next year for development. The idea to offer the programme came about from a curiosity as to what it was and how it would work in the school, Mr Winterbourn said. “Staff, both current and for-

Three cars collide A St John ambulance was sent to a vehicle collision outside the Methven Medical Centre on Methven Chertsey Road at 11.36am on Monday. A St John spokesperson said the collision involved three cars. A patient was assessed at the scene but not transported anywhere.

Road renamed To remove confusion for emergency services the Ashburton District Council has decided to rename a rural road that is currently bisected by Taylors Stream. The road, currently known as Goughs Crossing Road does not have a bridge across the stream, even though the road on either side carries the same name. To avoid confusion the council will rename the section between Taylors Stream and Springburn Bushside Road, Withers Farm Road. The name is associated with owners of the farm to the north who have farmed the land for many years and who own the sole access onto this section of the road. October building consents down 54 per cent The number of building consents issued in the Ashburton District appears to be in freefall, with numbers issued in October down 54 per cent on the same month last year. Since the start of the year, February was the only month in which consent numbers rose on

a month by month basis with October taking the greatest hit, down 54 per cent. Year to date the number of consents issued is are down 11.6 per cent on the previous year while the number of consents received for processing is down more than 14 per cent.

After a strong start to the year, the value of those consents has also dipped below the previous year. Values exceeded those achieved last year until May and have then continued to dip significantly, with October consents worth almost three times less than those issued in October

2014. After trending upwards for many months, the accumulating number of new dwelling consents is also starting to dip. August was the first month were numbers fell below those achieved over the past three years and that trend has continued.

Vandals costly During October, ratepayers were forced to pay out more than $9000 to repair damage caused around the district by vandals. The greatest share of this money went to replace or repair road signs, $7882, with the remainder spent on fixing damage caused at toilet blocks in Rakaia, East Street Ashburton and in the Ashburton Domain.

Majority of traps fail Ashburton’s Right Pipe project, designed to ensure water is not making its way into the town’s storm water system through low-lying gully traps has seen 2000 properties inspected by Ashburton District Council staff. Of those inspected about 52 per cent require remedial work to raise gully trap edges to keep water out and this number is much higher than the council originally anticipated.

Turning a passion into a career William Shortus has turned his passion for cars into a career for life. The 18-year-old will walk straight into a job as an apprentice mechanic upon graduating with a Certificate in Motor Industry from Aoraki Polytechnic. The Timaru student has always loved tinkering with cars, an interest that was sparked and nurtured by his mechanic dad and fine-tuned by the polytechnic. “I came to the Aoraki course knowing quite a bit from my dad. The course built on what I knew as well as teaching me a lot of new things. The best part about it was all the workshop time I got. I learn by doing things myself so the course suited me perfectly.’’ William said the three course tutors were excellent, with each specialising in a particular field of mechanics.

He has spent the last five weeks doing work experience at Autogas in Timaru. The business has snapped him up as an apprentice. “I am really happy to walk into a job. It’s great to not have to move out of town for work.’’ The Level three programme is a hand-on course where students spend three days in the classroom and two days on work experience. The year-long programme teaches a variety of technical skills which ensures graduates hit the ground running when they enter the workforce. The course has a high employment rate. William would definitely recommend the course to others looking for a practical hands-on job that qualifies you to work on light vehicles as a repair technician.

Opening the realisation of a long-held dream By SuSaN SaNdyS

Mt Somers Station owners David and Kate Acland realised a longheld dream when they opened The Station Farm Shop at their Staveley Store this week. The couple, who are parents to three children aged from two to five, took over the store about one month ago, and immediately got to work on extending it. The idea behind the extensions, which has increased the interior area by about one-third, was to add a farm shop for selling produce fresh from their 3800 hectare high country station. “David and I, since we have been married, have always talked about having a farm shop,” Mrs Acland said. Mrs Acland operates the Sugar Loaf winery at Blenheim, and during a business tour of the United Kingdom in January, she and Mr Acland visited many farm shops in the country. “We thought we just have to do this,” Mrs Acland said. “We are just really passionate about food and wine, and just wanted the opportunity to bring all that together. “We are incredibly proud of what we do at the station, so

proud of what we make and how we look after the beautiful farm and the environment, this is part of telling that story as well.” They decided the Staveley Store would be perfect to establish such a shop, as it already had a strong local clientele. The store, with a popular café, was also busy with tourists, but this was only for about three months of the year each summer. The dryland Mt Somers Station farms venison, with Mr Acland’s father Mark being one of the original deer farming pioneers in New Zealand, as well as sheep, beef and dairy. Mr and Mrs Acland undertook a conversion on the property three years ago and they milk 850 cows. The new extension has been named The Station Farm Shop and it has a large chiller full of various meat products. Mrs Acland said they had a five-year plan to add dairy, with milk, icecream and butter. The Staveley Store is just a five minute drive via a back road from the couple’s Mt Somers Station home. And they had been grateful to retain Budd Lister as the store’s manager. He had been among owners which had sold the shop to the couple.

In its efforts to ensure ratepayers were well informed about watering wisely this summer, the Ashburton District Council admits it has been less than proactive. Last week mayor Angus McKay lambasted Ashburton residents for abusing the privilege of having a hosing restriction-free summer and warned that unless consumption dropped the council might reverse its decision and impose hosing limits.

The carrot with restriction-free watering had been a SMART watering programme that saw an Irrigation New Zealand rural initiative specially adapted to suit urban needs. When this was unveiled, the council said it was using this as an education tool to ensure residents understood how to water for maximum efficiency and with minimum waste. Yesterday, however, Mr McKay admitted the council had not made the watering information

as easily accessible on its website as it could have done. Finding information requires a little creative clicking – a front page story, Watering Restrictions Change and from the menu a click on Water Conservation. Finally you hit the how you can help section. Within this there is a subsection, watering wisely that will tell people what they need to do to ensure optimum use of water. Mr McKay said he had asked staff to amend the website so

wise watering rules were up front. “The package itself is right; it’s a good package,” he said. In the absence of a better tool, Mr McKay said the spade test is still the ultimate gauge of soil moisture – if a handful of soil crumbles in your hand it’s too dry, if it clumps and sticks to your hands it’s about right but if water oozes out when squeezed, it’s too wet. Council service delivery manager Neil McCann was also deter-

mined to have access to watering information made easier. While education was the best option, he said the council was monitoring consumption day by day and it would take very little now for the situation to tip over and for hosing restrictions to be introduced. During last week’s high temperature days, daily consumption topped 23,200 cubic metres just short of the council’s consented limit of 25,000 cubic metres.

Committed to helping out With decades of volunteering experience between them Pat and Kevin O’Brien are no strangers to helping out. Married for 53 years the couple volunteer for a number of organisations, Mr O’Brien primarily donating his time to St Vincent de Paul – picking up and delivering furniture and firewood throughout the year. “Mr Fix It” as his wife calls him, began volunteering for the organisation since 2003 when the couple moved in to town from the family’s Lowcliffe farm which they ran for 37 years. “I thought it was a good time to do voluntary work and St Vincent de Paul took my fancy,” he said. However, his volunteering career officially started years prior. While farming he Mr O’Brien found time to help the community and was on the local Home and School committee, sat atop the Federated Farmers table for many years and gave his time to the Hinds Scouting group. On top of this he and wife help out with Meals on Wheels, are Red Cross members and are heavily involved with the Holy Name parish. Well known for her work with Red Cross Mrs O’Brien was originally a member of the Lowcliffe/ Coldstream branch before being elected to the Canterbury West Coast Red Cross Board and then was chosen as the regional representative for the national board.

Like her husband, Mrs O’Brien has found time to squeeze in other voluntary activities over the years including being a guide leader and a member of the Obstetrics and Gyneacology committee at Ashburton Hospital. Initially the couple began vol-

unteering as a way to help out and meet new people, she said, however it has now morphed into an integral part of their life. The whole O’Brien family – four children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren – also have the volunteering gene. “I think we have been very fortunate that we have been able to do this,” she said. “It’s a part of our ethos.”

Rules on community funding changed New guidelines have been established to ensure groups and organisations making a pitch for a share of the Ashburton District’s Council’s community funding grants are doing so on an even playing field. The council has rewritten the rules around eligibility, funding priority and the things that grant money can be used for and it has made it clear that money

will only be given to support new events or to build the capacity of existing events in the district that are open to the public and which enhance the community. To be successful and event must have wide public appeal and it must aim to attract a significant number of visitors to the district. As a general rule of thumb applicants should be non-commer-

Large forest fire Six fire crews and a helicopter are battling a large forestry fire in North Canterbury. The blaze started in a forestry block on Thongcaster Road, in the Eyrewell Forest near the Waimakariri River. Firefighters are working to contain it. Movie museum plans A movie museum, backed by film-makers Sir Peter Jackson and Sir Richard Taylor, will boast a “rare and unusual collection” of movie memorabilia that “can’t be seen anyway else in the world”, an insider says. The museum will be part of a $134 million joint convention centre and museum to be built on Wellington’s waterfront if the council votes to give it the green light. Drug-growing operation uncovered Armed police were called to help with a search warrant at a South Canterbury property yesterday, where a hydroponic cannabis operation was uncovered. The search took place at a rural address in the Rosewill area north of Timaru yesterday. Detective Sergeant Greg Harrison said in order to protect the safety of the public, AOS staff based in Timaru were used as a precaution to secure the property. Members of the specialist search group and a police drug detector dog helped detectives to complete the search. “A number of items were seized from the property including two hydroponic cannabis growers, a mixture of mature and growing cannabis plants, dry cannabis leaf, a quantity of methampheta-

mine, a substantial amount of cash and two firearms,” he said. “One of the firearms had been reported stolen 18 months ago from the Timaru area.” A 42-year-old man was arrested and will appear in Timaru District Court today facing drug and firearms-related charges. Scouting group offers holiday programme with a difference A new adventure holiday programme promises to keep kids on their toes for a week in January. Experienced scouting leaders will keep the group of 10 to 13-year-olds safe and share their knowledge across a range of activities. Mania-o-Roto scout leader Phillip Crozier said the Adventure Plus programme includes a day of water sports at Lake Hood, a cycling tour, pioneering, sporting activities and an overnight camp over at the scout park. “We won’t have Bear Grylls there and we won’t be dropping them off on a desert island or feeding them huhu grubs but it will

be a lot of fun,” Mr Crozier said. It is the first time the scouting group have offered the programme, which is intended to fill a week of the school holidays for an age group too young to be left at home alone, but beyond the age of requiring a babysitter as such. The programme is open to both scouting and non-scouting youth and costs $200 for the week. It will run from 8am to 5pm from Monday, January 18 to Friday, January 22. Mourning the death of the cash job Sue Newman

he Inland Revenue Department is the organisation we love to hate. While we understand they’re charged with ensuring the government’s coffers are filled with our hard-earned cash in accordance with New Zealand’s tax rules, what most of us hate is that the game of getting around those rules has become increasingly difficult. To be fair we were given a little relief several years back when the IRD decided it was expending far too much energy chasing the little guy for a few dollars in under-paid tax, opting to make filing a tax return optional if you were a wage and salary earner. We were grateful. It was good move, a smart one even. Far better to focus on chasing down the big-time tax evaders for a healthy payday when one was netted. But the IRD has not entirely removed the spotlight from the bread and butter income earners. For decades tradies have had one huge advantage in their tool bag, the ability to turn a hand to jobs where cash for work could be slipped under the table. The canny kept cashies to an undetectable level. Doing just enough so it was undetectable spending, beer and lunch money. The IRD is not silly, it knows there’s a fair amount of cash in circulation that’s never been brushed by tax and it wants that money back. It’s gunning for our tradies and it’s prepared to spend up large to make sure every dollar earned is declared. It’s hoping the community will help by becoming whistle-blowers if they know of tradies who’re pocketing undeclared cash for work done. Wanting its slice of income tax is a fair call, but it’s also a call that will cost the rest of us who’re short on cash, who need work done and who can’t wield a hammer, a paintbrush or a wrench. And how many of us will be prepared to dob our tradies in? Cashies might have become an underground economy, but it’s an economy that many of us – on both sides of the fence – have benefited from. It’s called Kiwi graft.

wice within a month I have been reminded that cyber security and business fraud are very real risks which could affect any one of us, at any time and the problem doesn’t stop there. Fraud targets the weakest link and in online security terms New Zealand businesses are weak. The challenge is how to stay ahead of the growing threat this poses to our Mid Canterbury business community. Business today is digitally enabled, from my smartphone to the accounting system. Computer security, also known as cybersecurity or IT security is the protection of information systems from theft or damage to the hardware, the software, and to the information on them, as well as from disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. I visited Wellington a couple of weeks ago, upholding the Mid Canterbury flag for SMEs (small medium enterprises) and met with various Government departments, one of which looks closely at business fraud and how it affect SMEs. lifeblood of the New Zealand economy and for that reason Fraud Awareness Week 2015 (November 15-21) focused on ways to keep them safe from scams. Fraudsters use all kinds of clever tricks to steal from businesses. Almost $800,000 was lost from 35 small businesses that were the victims of cybercrime in 2014, according to NetSafe. That’s an average of $22,521 for each victim. Most of us in some way have experienced a form of internetbased disruption; email hacking, false invoices, spear fishing (where the fraudster targets one person only or a single company). Many attacks go undocumented because people are embarrassed as to how easily they got ripped off. Our recent Business Mid Canterbury Masterclass looked

at internet fraud, through the rising deployment of virus and malware. Mike Tajori of IT service company CodeBlue presented some practical, easy-to-understand information using real-life examples that reinforced how easily it could happen to any of us. It is important to have a person and process in place that focuses solely on safeguarding against an online attack. Tanya Hulme from Hedway was amongst the group and said that although she is aware of the dangers, it served as a reminder that they cannot be complacent about this aspect of their business. Tanya said they are vigilant in their own practice, but are often approached by clients looking for advice on a range of things including file back-ups, virus protection and purchasing the right computer software. To hear small businesses are targeted due to a low expectation of getting hit was a timely reminder to put more robust processes in place. Back-ups need to be reviewed on a regular basis to verify they are doing the job they were designed to do and that data can

be retrieved if necessary. Letting children play on work computers brings with it an added risk; so be aware of this if syncing work computers with personal computers, phones or tablets. Knowing what your staff is up to online is another area where you need to be security conscious. It is important you know what sort of data are they sharing, whether through stick drives or websites. Not many businesses have heard of cyber insurance, yet this should form a part of your protection. It is used to protect businesses and individual users from internet-based risks and, more generally, from risks relating to information technology infrastructure and activities. Being aware of threats that could expose a weakness in your cyber security is a matter of upskilling yourself or engaging the services of somebody who understands the ever-changing dynamics of security proofing your business. Trump urges Muslim ban By Steve Holland Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is calling for a ban on Muslims entering the United States in the most dramatic response by a candidate yet to a shooting spree last week by two Muslims who the FBI say were radicalised. Trump’s “statement on preventing Muslim immigration” on Monday has drawn fierce criticism from some of his rivals for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, all of whom have been constantly searching for ways to knock him out of the lead. Withering reaction flowed in from former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Ohio Governor John Kasich, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. “Donald Trump is unhinged. “His ‘policy’ proposals are not serious,” Bush said in a tweet. White House spokesman Josh Earnest also castigated the billionaire developer and reality TV star. “I think what Mr Trump is doing is something that he’s been doing over the course of his entire campaign, which is ... to play on people’s fears in order to build support for his campaign, Earnest told MSNBC. “I think what he’s doing, he’s dividing America in a really cynical way.” Trump is calling for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the country “until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on”. “Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” Trump said. Isis’ future plans The terrifying extent of Isis’ plans to create a caliphate have been laid bare in a 24-page manual for the terror group on building a state. The blueprint, entitled Principles in the administration of the Islamic State, shows the framework for how Isis became a disruptive and wealthy terrorist organisation. The document sets out how the group can best establish a civil service, local government and a propaganda operation, and advocates Sovietstyle control over the economy. Facebook ‘uncool’ American teens think Facebook has definitely lost its cool factor, but use it as much as ever. here’s a well-known saying on Wall Street that financial markets are driven by two powerful emotions – fear and greed. People are always trying to find the next hottest investment or avoid the next crash. What people fail to recognise is that by far the greatest factor in successful investing is not the investment or the timing but the investor themself. Being able to rise above your emotional biases and reactions in your decision making is perhaps the single most important skill in becoming a successful investor. Thanks to Hollywood and the 6 o’clock news we all know about investment greed and the fact that at times markets lose touch with reality. There always are and always will be speculators who buy simply because fortunes are being made and they want to get in on the action. In investing this is called the Greater Fool Theory – believing there will always be a greater fool to buy the asset off you and not realising that you may be the

greater fool. What I consider to be overall the more detrimental emotion of the two however is fear. A lot of people are too scared to enter the market simply because they fear their initial investment losing value from market pull backs. Without entering the market their probability for making good returns therefor becomes zero and they then run the risk of inflation eating at their money. A lot people have been saying for years that New Zealand property and shares are overvalued. Going by most valuation metrics they have been right. Unfortunately for them markets don’t listen to valuation metrics and many markets have doubled in the meantime. Emotional biases cause people to worry too much about short term volatility and lose sight of

the fact that in the long run markets trend up over time. Numerous studies have shown that the overall result of people acting on impulse, emotion or popular opinion is that average investor returns are actually much lower than if investors had randomly bought into a market at any old time. Much of this can be attributed to poor decision making due to emotional responses. I like to think of successful investing as taking a ‘zen’ attitude and choosing the ‘middle path’, not swinging between the emotions of fear and greed but continuing slowly on your way. By disconnecting from current fads and fuss you can invest consistently with your longterm goal in mind and won’t be swayed by market ups and downs. Save Animals From Exploitation (SAFE), the animal rights group, spent just 0.7 per cent of its annual income on a fullpage advertisement in the UK’s Guardian newspaper about the fate of the dairy industry’s newborn calves and says it sometimes needs shock-value tactics to gain any traction. The lobby group spent about $7500 on the ad after it became frustrated with the response from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to a complaint in September based on video footage secretly filmed by fellow traveller Farmwatch, showing brutal treatment of bobby calves at an abattoir, says managing director Debra Ashton. Her group yesterday called for the ministry to be stripped of its responsibility for animal

welfare, saying it was conflicted because of its close ties with primary industry. “Complaints don’t get taken seriously unless we take some extra action,” Ashton said. But she believes SAFE punches above its weight. Executive director Hans Kriek and others from the group have been invited to meet executives of Fonterra Co-operative Group next week. At the primary production select committee last week MPI director-general Martyn Dunne was questioned about the bobby calf footage and asked why there had been no prosecutions yet. Do you think the Kiwi Christmas is too commercial? According to Colmar Brunton’s annual Christmas survey, more than 50 per cent of Kiwis think it is. The latest festive survey reveals just 41 per cent of Kiwis think New Zealand retailers and advertisers are getting the spirit of Christmas right. Colmar Brunton CEO Jacqueline Farman believes the findings are the result of consumers feeling bombarded with straight sales-driven messages that fail to capture the “true” spirit of festivities. “The public are telling us that they have a very clear view of what Christmas is about and that’s what advertisers need to connect with to engage consumers.” The findings show more than nine out of 10 New Zealanders say Christmas is about family and friends, 85 per cent say giving is more important than receiving and 76 per cent rate it the best time of the year. Farman believes UK store John Lewis sets the global standard for Christmas advertising. The popular department store has a history of highlighting important and challenging aspects of Christmas in a “beautiful way”, which is greatly anticipated by the

Set aside. ■ Add crushed garlic, sliced onion and carrot to the pan, stir-fry for five minutes. ■ Add the beans and cook a further minute before adding the broccoli and a little water. ■ Cook until broccoli is just tender. ■ Return beef to the pan, add remaining soy sauce and toss to combine. ■ Serve beef with peanut sauce and scatter with basil leaves.

hen a meal is needed and time is short, you can’t go past a stir-fry. Just about any combination of meat, vegetables, noodles and sauces are happily at home in a wok, cooked quickly and usually served over rice. For many home cooks a stirfry is something that’s tossed together on the run, without a recipe, but occasionally it’s good to check out someone else’s tried and true combinations

Pork and vegetable stir-fry

Lemongrass and chicken stir-fry

600g pork 2T oil 2 red capsicums, sliced 4 spring onions, trimmed and sliced 250g green beans, trimmed and blanched 1/2 C hoisin sauce 1/4 C dark soy sauce 1/4 C sesame seeds ■ Heat a wok or frying pan, add a little oil and stir-fry pork (cut into pieces) until brown. ■ Set aside. ■ Add a little more oil. ■ Stir-fry sliced capsicums, beans and spring onions for five minutes over a high heat. ■ Add hoisin sauce and soy sauce, then return pork to the pan, tossing well. ■ Serve in bowls with rice or noodles, scattered with sesame seeds.

200g bean sprouts 3 shallots, finely sliced 3 cloves garlic, finely sliced 1T lemongrass, minced 1 stalk celery, finely sliced 2T chopped chives 2 red chillies, minced 1 lemon, quartered to serve ■ Put the noodles into a large bowl. ■ Pour boiling water over then leave for three minutes. Drain in a colander. ■ Bring stock to a boil then cover and simmer for five minutes. ■ Drop prawns into the simmering stock and leave until they just begin to change colour.

■ Strain and reserve the stock. ■ Heat vegetable oil with the peanut oil in the wok. ■ Fry the bean sprouts, shallots, garlic, lemongrass and celery until soft and golden. ■ Add the remaining stock, noodles and prawns. ■ Stir-fry for two minutes then serve with plenty of garlic chives and chillies and lemon wedges on the side.

1T fresh ginger, grated 1t ground cumin 1T sweet chilli sauce 1 dash vegetable oil 600g beef steaks, thinly sliced 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 onion, finely sliced 1 carrot, large, finely sliced 300g green beans, trimmed 1 head broccoli, chopped into florets 1/2 C basil leaves, torn

1T vegetable oil 500g chicken thigh fillets, sliced 3 stalks lemongrass, white stem only, finely sliced 2 long red chillis, finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 500g broccoli, cut into chunks 1/4 C water 2T fish sauce 1T caster sugar 1t cracked black pepper 2 green onions, cut into 3cm lengths steamed rice, to serve ■ Heat oil in a wok or large frying pan on high. ■ Stir-fry chicken, in two batches, 3-4 minutes each batch, until well browned. ■ Reduce heat to medium. ■ Stir-fry lemongrass, chilli and garlic one minute, until fragrant. ■ Add broccoli, water, fish sauce, sugar and pepper. ■ Increase heat to high; stir-fry 2-3 minutes, until broccoli is bright green and just tender. ■ Remove from heat; toss green onion through. ■ Serve with steamed rice.

Poet talks environment Christchurch poet Bernadette Hall elaborates on the Matakaea exhibition under way at the Ashburton Art Gallery. About 30 people attended her talk, where she read poetic word strings and spoke about her inspiration for the exhibition, which represents a collaboration with Christchurch-based multi-media artist Robyn Webster. It includes a life-sized model of a dinosaur, incorporating toy vehicles and debris as a reﬂection of the impact of humans on the environment.

Your favourite festive carols The Mid Canterbury Choir will present its annual Christmas concerts at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church this Sunday. Choir members will lend their voices to carol favourites such as Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful and Ding Dong Merrily on High. Guest soloist will be Olivia Stewart and guest flautist will be Ai Ando-Ferner, who is the wife of the choir’s musical director Anthony Ferner. Manager Carol Gunn said while many of the carols would be familiar, audience members would notice “interesting arrangements” in some of them. Entry is $5 with tickets available at the door for the concerts, to be held at 1.30pm and 4pm. “We hope folk will take time out from their busy Christmas preparations to enjoy this concert, a way to remember the true meaning of Christmas,” Mrs Gunn said. ing is something she has no intention of giving up. Having begun singing lessons at the age of 12, she will be continuing these next year in Christchurch to gain further qualifications and experience in music.

Ms Ando-Ferner is an accomplished flautist and member of the Resonance Ensemble in Christchurch. Mr Ferner is the choir’s permanent musical director, and also principal flute of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Ashburton’s Catherine Knight flew the flag for Aorangi-South Canterbury on day one of the New Zealand interprovincial women’s golf, winning both matches in her position as team number one. In the morning round Aorangi came up against Southland, winning the tie. Knight beat Robyn Pullar 6/5 while number four Jenny Kellahan also chalked up a win against Helen Baird, 3/2. Both Sharon Bradford and Jessica Shearer halved their matches while number two Ginny Bolderstone lost to Angela Gherken. In the afternoon Aorangi-South Canterbury played the tough Auckland sides who went into the tournament as favourites, having won the title five times in the last six years. Only Knight at number one managed a win. After four holes she was all square and had moved to a one shot lead after nine before dropping back to all square with five holes to play. She dug deep and managed to pull off a tidy win against Munchin Keh, 2/1. Both Bradford and Bolderston were up one shot after four holes but battled to

hold their advantage, eventually losing their matches. Kellahan and Shearer were on the wrong side of the ledger from the first hole. This morning Aorangi-South Canterbury, with one win under its belt, is on the tee at 7.30am against Waikato who had a win and a bye yesterday. Aorangi does not get the bye until Friday. In the afternoon the side plays the tough Canterbury team that beat Hawkes BayPoverty Bay 4/1 and Southland 5/0 yesterday. Ashburton’s Catherine Bell is a member of the Canterbury team, playing at number three. She beat Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay’s Jaimie Wilson 6/5 in the morning and Southland’s Olivia Frost, 2/1 in the afternoon yesterday. Only Canterbury and Manawatu/Wanganui will go into today’s round with two wins on the board. Auckland, North Harbour, Bay of Plenty and Waikato had a bye each on day one. The Toro New Zealand women’s interprovincial tournament will be hosted by the Ashburton Golf Club on its Brandon course until Friday and the event is open to the public.

ABs to play France France will get a chance to atone for their embarrassing Rugby World Cup defeat to the All Blacks next year. Trotting qualifiers a wide and varied bunch BK Superstar with Ricky May in the sulky proved she could be another top horse from the Greg and Nina Hope stable when she romped home to take the second on the card, the qualifying trot at yesterday’s Mid Canterbury Trainers and Owners trials.

A field of nine trotters set out as equals, but the 2400 metre race proved a tough testing ground for some with the top performers almost returning to the stalls before the stragglers had crossed the finish line. The Majestic Son-Supersta-

ragogo showed impressive pace over the final 400 metres of the race to come home five lengths ahead of the Murray Edmondstrained Alpine Sun (SundonSierra Action) with Notre Cheval Volant and Chris Thornley a length and a half back.

Not only did hundreds of metres separate first from last, but so too did a fair cluster of years, with the youngest runner in the field Alpine Sun at three. The oldest were nine-year-old Another Mark and eight-year-old Monarchy Princess.

Windies must rekindle passion By Laine CLark Of the countless problems embroiling West Indies cricket, fast bowling great Courtney Walsh believes his once mighty team’s troubles stem from one factor. And perhaps it is the most damning of all. Sure the Windies team is battling with funding dramas, a fractured board and a wounded team that has never tasted Test greatness in 20 years. But Walsh admits his lowly ranked team’s major problem is simple - and it must pain him to say it. “Over time you realise the passion isn’t there as it used to be,” said Walsh, now travelling with the team as a tour selector. “And that’s what we have to try to do. “We have to try to rekindle that passion and that pride. I don’t think there’s anything else wrong with what we’re doing.” The once unbeatable Windies

have not won an overseas Test series of note in 20 years. Such is the turmoil in the current team, coach Phil Simmons has only just been reinstated after being suspended for claiming board interference in squad selections. Adding to the drama, the likes of former skippers Chris Gayle, Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo will feature in the upcoming Big Bash League Twenty20 competition rather than the Test series. A recent board director even said that he feared the Windies could disband within 10 years as a result of their continued failure. No wonder few believe the Windies will take this week’s first Test against Australia in Hobart into a fourth day let alone compete hard in the three-match series. Walsh - who featured in the Windies team that went undefeated for 15 years in Tests from 1980 - admits it is no easy fix.

But he said he believed they were no lost cause. “To be honest if we didn’t have the ability I would say we would be struggling but the potential is there - they just have to go out there and execute,” he said. Asked if he was surprised at how quickly the Windies fell from the top, Walsh said: “The one thing that is against us in the West Indies is probably funding.

“We don’t have the major sponsors to cover all the areas that will make things a lot easier and help us focus more. “We are focused in patches which is the difference between us and (the likes of) England and Australia and New Zealand. “They can channel their focus in the right direction - we don’t have that luxury.” Walsh is part of the Windies support staff along with fellow greats Richie Richardson (team manager) and Curtly Ambrose (bowling coach). He did not believe the presence of greatness would overwhelm their emerging team as they looked to finally step out of their shadow. “You have to look at the here and now, what legacy you want to leave behind, how you want to approach it,” he said. “We want to see the guys competing, to try and create their own legacy, to leave their own mark.” - AAP

Top local netballer Kate Lloyd is headed up to Auckland tomorrow for a training camp with Netball New Zealand’s National Development Under 21 tier. The 18-year-old 1.83m defender was selected for the team along with 19 other netballers from around the country in October. One of only two Netball Mainland players to be selected, Lloyd said she was shocked to have been named.

Tomorrow, Lloyd will join her team-mates at a training camp in Auckland where she will undergo a rigorous medical check and fitness test, participate in mentoring and team building sessions and of course take to the courts. Following the conclusion of the camp, a side will then be selected to tour the Cook Islands. If chosen, Lloyd will stay on in Auckland, flying out to the islands on December 14. However, should she not be named in the 12-player side, she

will return home on Saturday. The team will then have a short break over the Christmas and New Year period before attending another training camp in late January. Then a side will be picked to tour Australia, Lloyd said. Finally, a team will be named for the biggest event of the year – the 2017 World Youth Cup in Gaborone, Botswana. The tournament will see 20 countries take part in nine days of world-class netball.

New Zealand has won the cup three times, in 2013, 2005 and 1992. Training every day, Lloyd said she felt good headed into the camp and was happy with her fitness level. “I’ve been working really hard,” she said. “I feel like they [the other players] have more to be worried about with a young 18-year-old.” The other Mainland player in the U21 team, Charlotte Elley, a Tactix mid-courter, has already

been giving her advice, she said. A former Ashburton College student, Lloyd will attend Lincoln University next year after being awarded the Netball Sporting Scholarship and study sport and recreation management. However, the Under 21 squad is her top priority. Looking ahead Lloyd said her goal is to play for an ANZ Championship team in 2018 and the Silver Ferns in 2020, however right now her focus is on staying fit and being selected for the African tour.
