Rugby union probes incident

An incident which was captured on video and circulated on social media the day after Celtic’s win in the 2018 Watters Cup final is being investigated by the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU).

2018 FORD ECOSPORT MCRU CEO Ian Patterson would not comment on the nature of the incident which was filmed, but the Guardian understands the incident occurred during 2018 FORD ECOSPORT a Sunday session involving members of the Southern side which had gone down to Celtic 28-24 the day prior.

Patterson said the incident had been brought to the MCRU’s attention by the Celtic Rugby Club, although Celtic had not lodged a complaint.

“The club provided video footage of an incident and requested the union look into the matter. The union is now investigating the incident and events around it,” Patterson said.

He said the incident was recorded on a phone and uploaded to an individual’s Instagram account.

Learning how to communicate with dementia sufferers

Growing numbers of Hospice Mid Canterbury clients have dementia and it is important volunteers know how to communicate with them.

This was the basis behind volunteer services manager Christine Wilson asking Dementia Canterbury representative Philippa Cosgrove to share some tips with volunteers as part of the organisation’s regular education programme.

Wilson said that while dementia was poorly represented as a cause of death, with only 7.6 per cent of deaths identified as having a form of dementia from mortality data, Hospice New Zealand found that by combining evidence of dementia from other sources, there was a further 19.7 per cent, making the disease occurrence 27.3 per cent in total deaths.

Tips from Cosgrove to the 25 or so volunteers present included taking note of the “four Ss” while communicating. These were to slow down in speech and movements, keep everything simple, be specific, and show how to do things by demonstrating.

It was also important not to argue about details which dementia sufferers may have recalled incorrectly from their memory.

Rather, their wellbeing was paramount and a nice conversation or interchange would leave them with a feeling that something good had happened.

“That emotional sense will stay with the person,” Cosgrove said.

Concerns over students’ gaming

As computer games like Fortnite sweep the country, teachers are urging parents to stay aware of their children’s night-time habits.

Ashburton Intermediate is among several schools around the country voicing concerns about the number of children turning up to school tired after late-night gaming sessions.

“Teachers have noticed it in general conversation with students,” principal Brent Gray said.

“They’ll say, hey, you’re looking a little bit tired, and the kids will tell them they’ve been gaming or on their devices the night before.”

He said lack of sleep could lead to obvious impacts on students’ concentration and behaviour in class.

“It tends to crop up straight after the weekend … they’ll have been gaming throughout the weekend and then they’ll be looking quite tired on the Monday.”

Gray issued a message to parents in the latest school newsletter and said he had spoken informally with teachers about the issue.

“We’ve told them that if they’re concerned enough, they could get in touch with parents.”

He had not spoken directly with any other concerned principals

but said he presumed it could be an age related issue.

In the newsletter note to parents, he advised them simply to be aware.

“I think kids can be a bit sneaky with it … so it’s just a matter of knowing that your kids might not be going to sleep straight away at bedtime.”

About 40 million people worldwide have downloaded the free computer game Fortnite, which was launched last year and later labelled “irresponsibly addictive”

by Britain’s Children’s Commissioner.

Last month, internet network company Chorus said Kiwis play-

ing Fortnite had created an internet traffic spike 20 per cent higher than usual, to never-seen-before levels.

The concept of Fortnite is essentially survival of the fittest – players join a match of about 90 to 100 people and shoot at each other’s characters using realisticlooking guns. The last person “alive” wins.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association Deputy Chair Rebekah Clement said she was sure Ashburton Intermediate was not alone in facing the issue.

“Although most adults and children that engage in gaming on devices are able to do so with

moderation, there is the concern with those who find gaming addictive,” she said.

“Added to this, consideration should be given to the age of students and the nature of current trends and what is the current ‘in thing’ to be doing online, as well as the peer pressure that may go along with these trends.”

She advised anyone wanting advice or support to visit Netsafe, which provides tips on limitations, setting boundaries, checking ratings of what children are engaging in and ensuring that the usage does not negatively impact on a child’s healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Student’s removal from class sparks inquiry

Reveley signals he’ll call time on council

Popularity was never his aim; rather, doing what he believed was right.

Most recently he changed his opinion on the proposal to reduce councillor numbers from 12 to nine at the next election.

Initially Reveley was one of 11 voting for change; when the final proposal was put he was one of three voting for the status quo.

There’s no denying numbers could be reduced, but the people around the table would need to be at the top of their game, he said.

He’s a councillor who believes in doing his homework and has no patience with fellow councillors who do not.

“Around the council table we waste so much time on questions that wouldn’t need to be asked if people had done their homework,” he said.

When he looks around the table, Reveley suggested his might not be the only name missing from the ballot papers next year.

With 14 months still to run in this council term, however, knowing he’s on the home stretch won’t lessen his desire to make the best decisions possible for the district.

“There’ll be absolutely no difference in how I treat the job.”

He’s never been a man to stand on ceremony and Peter Reveley says when local body election day rolls around in October next year, his name won’t be on the ballot papers.

Five terms around the council table is more than enough, he said. It was time to get his life back, to spend more time with his family and on the farm.

Reveley was elected in what was then the Methven/Hinds ward in the 2004 election and was re-elected in 2007 and 2010.

In January 2012 he resigned to devote more time to his farming business, forcing a by-election in what had become the Eastern Ward. This was won by Ken Cutforth.

He stood successfully for council in the 2013 election and was re-elected in 2016.

Reveley says he looks back over the past 30 years and realises how often his wife Rhonda has been left holding the family and the farm – 29 years as an ambulance volunteer, many years on the Mt Somers Fire Brigade team, five terms of council and in later years, many hours each week working with the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust.

“Council’s not majorly busy but it’s constant. I’m running basically a two-person farm and I’ve been doing a lot of that farming at night with a light on my head. Farm work doesn’t stop; you don’t have a day off.”

The end of this council term

will be a good time to leave, with several big ticket projects either under way or signed off, he said.

Reveley has, at times, been a councillor who has rocked the boat. He’s never been afraid to challenge, never been one whose vote could be bought and has always been a man who voted according to his own beliefs rather than with the majority.

An incident that saw an Ashburton College teacher “guide’ a student towards a classroom door is under investigation.

The incident occurred earlier this week and involved a teacher who was “provoked by a student who would not do what he was required to do”, said college principal Ross Preece.

“The teacher guided the student towards the door – end of story and it’s being dealt with,” he said.

The incident was filmed by two students who were friends of the student, using their cell phones.

When asked to comment on cell phone use in class, Preece said that all students had phones and for some they were the device of choice for school work rather than a laptop.

He wouldn’t comment on the nature of the student’s behaviour but said it was an “unusual” incident.

“It happened and the matter is being dealt with by us.”

From the teacher’s perspective it was an employment issue and the students involved were being dealt with. Their parents will be involved.

“The process is still being worked through.”

Celtic captain Danny Hurley got a second chance to hold Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup aloft yesterday.

Hurley, along with a few of his team mates and some of the managers from the club’s senior rugby side that defeated Southern 28-24 to win the Watters Cup outright for the first time in 18 years on Saturday, paid a special visit to some of their youngest, loudest and proudest fans yesterday, with the cup in tow.

They headed along to St Joseph’s School, where they were the guests of honour at a special assembly to celebrate their victory, visited classrooms and shared many a high-five.

Many of those young St Joseph’s kids watching on proudly and asking questions of their favourite players yesterday were also on hand on Saturday to watch their team win the cup, and Hurley took the opportunity to thank them for their support.

Led by St Joseph’s teacher Cathy Reid those kids formed a guard of honour for their team as they ran onto the park, spent much of the game chanting and cheering their hearts out, and

He said hearing a big “defence” chant going up while they were hard on their line defending gave them that little extra boost.

Celtic had last made a Watters Cup final in 2012 and shared it with Southern after a drawn final in 2006, but last won it outright 18 years ago.

Fund could boost bridge coffers By suE nEwman

A slice of the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) could become a major funder for a second urban bridge across the Ashburton River.

The fund will see $3 billion over three years invested in regional development in the provinces, primarily to enhance economic development opportunities and to create sustainable jobs.

And Ashburton’s mayor Donna Favel is keen to see Ashburton secure its share of this money as part funding for the second Ash-

burton River bridge. The application, however, is still in its very early stages, she said.

In its long-term plan the council indicated it would invest 20 per cent of the total (likely to be $35 million) with the remaining money sourced via NZTA subsidy and through the PGF. Design work for the bridge is currently planned for 2020/2021 with physical work beginning in 2026.

The council plans to loan fund its share of the cost, with a repayment schedule that ensures costs are spread across several gen-

erations of users. While work is tagged to start in 2026, the council considers the project should be brought forward and should coincide with improvements on State Highway One through Tinwald.

The PGF was an opportunity the council had to explore but there were a number of issues that needed to be ticked off, Favel said.

Among those was the timing of the bridge build project. It has been for design work to begin in two years’ time, but it is unclear whether money could be secured

against a future project, she said.

“Yes, we are looking at putting in an application but we need to be comfortable with our business case first.”

The council considers the second bridge will have significant benefits for traffic travelling the length of New Zealand and would solve traffic congestion through central Ashburton but funder NZTA believes the benefits will be only local.

The bridge will be built at the end of Chalmers Avenue and connect with a new road in Tinwald’s east.

Wednesday’s strike by primary teachers could create chaos in the workplace as parents juggle work and the need for unexpected, mid-term childcare.

The staff at EA Networks Centre have come to the rescue, with a kids’ activity day that will allow parents to work without worrying about who is looking after their children while schools are closed.

The activity day is the brainchild of centre manager Steve Prescott who said there will be activities in the pool and in the stadium for children.

The day will run during normal school hours from 8.30am until 3.30pm.

Children must be registered to attend and the play day will cost $30 per child.

Prescott said he knew parents were short on options for children when there was a mid-term disruption to the school week.

“If you need somewhere for your child to go where they’ll be looked after and kept entertained, contact us as soon as possible as we only have 60 spots available,” he said.

It is open to all school children between the ages of five and 12.

Half day bookings are not available.

Children will be required to bring their own morning tea, lunch and snacks for the day.

If the strike does not go ahead, parents will be refunded with a $30 gift voucher that can be used for anything at the EA Networks Centre.

Botanic D’Lights a light extravaganza Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens and the Arts Centre will be ablaze with light over the next four nights, including talking trees and the occasional fairy.

Botanic D’Lights drew some 70,000 people two years ago and the 2018 show, with the theme Escape Your Reality, is expected to be bigger and better.

Beginning last night and going until Sunday, from 6pm to 9pm, the gardens and arts centre will light up with over 40 different installations, light features and multimedia works.

Eleven of the works have been contributed by Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Bruce Russell, Ara manager of art and design, said Botanic D’Lights was a great platform for the institute’s creative talent.

Students from art and design and music arts have been working alongside their course tutors, who are working artists in their own right, gaining invaluable professional experience and exposure.

“Students will be able to take away strong photographic proof of their work from a live performance setting.”

For many students it was their first real-world project and they often don’t realise the magnitude

of their involvement until they see it all brought together, he said.

“Last time Ara was involved in this event quite a few of the students had a moment when they

realised ‘oh, this is a really big show and I’m a really big part of it!’

“They were literally taken by surprise.”

Tim Budgen, Ara motion design tutor is working with his students across four different projects that are a mix of animation, sound, light and motion design work.

Budgen can’t wait to see people’s reactions to his project Talking Trees, which was popular at the 2016 event.

“The students have been coming up with funny discussions for the garden’s trees to have together. It might be that they tell jokes, or do parodies or satire of famous figures … and the faces themselves are quite abstract.

Hopefully a few of my really bad dad jokes will make the cut!”

Russell said that other projects to look out for include River of Words, created by photography tutor John Maillard, and Oberon’s Dream, “a whimsical fairy grotto scenario with tons of luminous mushrooms” created by tutors John Osbourne, Deborah Marshall and Carol King.

Botanic D’Lights has been organised so families and groups can make a night of it, with food trucks set to line Rolleston Avenue and free glow-in-the-dark face paint for the kids, or kids-atheart.

Time to ditch old fashioned Kiwi bloke mentality Mid Canterbury men are being asked to ditch the stereotypes and just be themselves, as part of the latest campaign by All Right?

All Right? mental health promoter Ciaran Fox says the campaign is needed because many blokes still believe that to be a man they need to live up to the Kiwi bloke stereotype.

“It’s time to let go of the idea that a good Kiwi bloke should be strong, silent and stoic, and to lose the whole ‘harden up’ or ‘get over it’ mentality,” says Fox. “Supressing the real you in order to live up to the expectations of your mates or society can be incredibly damaging.

“We need to move beyond those narrow stereotypes of the

past and look to the future of manliness.

“What this campaign is all about is letting guys know that being yourself is Manly As,” says Fox. James Milne is one of the men who have been photographed for the campaign. He says often the way the media portray men – through movies or television – is just full of clichés.

“They’re either strong and muscular, or rich and overweight with a beautiful wife. It’s not really reflective of real life. I feel like the expectations for men have moved on,” Milne said.

As for the advice Milne would give to a younger version of himself?

“Be true to yourself and comfortable not to follow the crowd.

I think that’s becoming more acceptable and we need to encourage that.”

Fox says the campaign is not saying that it’s bad to be a strong, silent type – rather it’s saying if that if this isn’t you, then that’s all right. You don’t need to fit into the mould.

“It’s time to say yes to things that we want to do but we’re prevented from doing because we’re worried we’d be seen as weak or different. It’s time to acknowledge that we have feelings and emotions. It’s time to put as much focus on growing mental fitness as we do to our physical fitness. Now that is Manly As.”

Students do it all Year 7-10 students at Ashburton Christian School have been learning the ropes of running a production.

Venegeance is Mine hits the stage on August 30 and students have been working on all aspects to make it a success – from the storyline to the acting, the casting to the costumes. Students are also working with James Wood from the Event Centre to create their own lighting, sound and staging.

“Ashburton Christian School is hosting a production that is being run by the Year 7-10 students. They are getting professionals from every aspect of a production to train up the students to the standard

where they are able to teach others. The teachers are gradually giving more and more responsibilities to the producer and to the directors for each of the stories,” promotions’ Hannah Kuipers (Year 10) said.

“As a producer I have been managing things, checking how things are going and making sure that everyone is on schedule,” producer Nadine Cabanatan (Year 10) said.

“We are doing this to learn what our capabilities can be used for, also, we are learning it for the future because we might choose to take that as an opportunity to have a job.”

Winter sport St Joseph’s School students were among those flocking to the Primary Schools Winter Tournament earlier this month.

Soccer, netball, rugby and hockey players engaged in a bit of friendly competition with opponents from other Mid Canterbury primaries.

After a successful series of wins at the tournament, St Joseph’s Year 7-8 Gold netball team and Year 5-6 football team will be heading to the zone tournament later in August.

School visit with cup a special gesture H

ow cool was it yesterday to see our local champion rugby side Celtic giving a little back to the community.

While a school visit and a quick pass around of one of Mid Canterbury’s most prized sporting trophies might not seem like much on face value, many of the kids at St Joseph’s School will go home dreaming of one day holding that trophy once again, as rugby players.

Sporting stars from across the world are the epitome of super heroes for so many of our children these days.

The All Blacks hold an almost hypnotising aura about them that lures the imagination of fans,

both young and old, and you can see the pure joy in people’s face as they come up close and personal with their idols.

Local sporting stars need be no different.

Hundreds of our younger generations line the sidelines each weekend watching senior sport.

Whether they are there because their parents dragged them, they

soon get to know the faces on the field and start to look up to and enjoy watching them play.

With a really strong emphasis on family, Celtic is a club leading the charge here locally.

The huge turnout of young supporters to last weekend’s Watters Cup final is a true testament to just how much the team meant to the members and supporters of the club, both young and old.

When Danny Hurley marched into St Joseph’s yesterday morning with a few of his team mates behind him, it would have literally made the day, and perhaps week of some of the students.

It’s a small price to pay, really – but those children were lucky that

the players had willing bosses and families who were prepared to let them sneak off for a few hours to pay the school a visit, so it really is a community effort.

On Monday we watched thousands line the streets of Christchurch to celebrate the Crusaders’ back-to-back victories in the Super Rugby competition. Again, a special moment for everyone who ventured out in the rain to give the boys a wave.

Our own Tim Perry stood as part of that parade, highlighting not only his own efforts – but also those of Mid Canterbury in the process.

When he stepped out for Rakaia earlier in the season against

Methven, there was a real excitable buzz around the Methven showgrounds from the younger kids that they were going to see an All Black doing his work on Mid Canterbury turf.

Sport isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but when a superstar of sport gives his time back to the community it needs to be appreciated because it’s not something we should ever take likely.

Celtic’s little gesture of support to a school which had supported them was a nice way for the team to recognise the support they have received during the season.

And if it brought a smile to the faces of a few kids, then that’s even better.

Making NCEA, ECE even better A

s a mum and someone who works within our education sector, it is very clear to me, better education leads to better lives.

This Government’s first Budget included big investments in education, including 1500 new teacher places, hundreds of new classrooms, the biggest funding boost in a decade for the Early Childhood Education (ECE) sector, and a fundamental rethink of whether NCEA is meeting our kids’ needs.

It warms my heart that many of our most vulnerable students are also getting greater support to succeed, with funding for an extra 1000 kids with special learning needs established.

That’s additional to a further 2900 deaf and hard-of-hearing and 1500 low-vision students receiving additional educational aid – aid which will halve the current waiting list for preschoolers needing extra help and lift a considerable weight

For too long, early learning providers (including nga koanga reo) have been forced to do more with less, putting pressure on service quality and prices. Young Kiwis and parents deserve better.

Budget 2018 delivered the first universal cost adjustment for early learning services since 2008 when we were last in Government.

Four thousand, one hundred Early Childhood Education providers and over 200,000 Kiwi children will benefit from its promise of $590.2 million in new operating funding to meet rising demand.

With Mid Canterbury a perfect candidate for the new teachers and classrooms Budget 2018 is delivering, we also need to take this opportunity to rethink NCEA, which is more than 15 years old.

Can rules established 15 years ago still meet the needs of today’s children?

Look how much technology alone has changed in this time.

Have we adapted for that technology wave as best as we can?

Overall, NCEA is a great qualification. However employers are telling us that some students don’t have the right skills, students say more flexibility is needed, and teachers say too much assessment consistently gets in the way of learning.

This Government is committed to ensuring real learning – not constant testing – is at the heart of every Kiwi school.

Everyone who’s raised a teenager in the past 15 years has experienced NCEA first-hand, I

have, and thousands of parents just like me, young people and employers across the country will have great ideas for how to make NCEA even better.

We want to hear every one of them.

Education belongs to every New Zealander, so I encourage you to join the conversation at conversation.education.govt. nz and make your voice heard before submissions close on Sunday, September 16.

Together we can make a Kiwi education a world-leading education.

What a good name for a place with so many possibilities. I love the ideal of a Chinese style shelter with information boards of the past, maybe similar to those we see in our national parks.

The building could be erected near the old well as a reference to the past. We don’t need marble pavers, rose beds, or pergolas.

A copse of trees in several areas would look great.

This is a prime real estate area with top quality homes built over the fence to the east, a proposed new subdivision to the north. The plot of land to the south is on the market which includes gorses, broom and derelict buildings and the street frontage on the west currently has long grass and no footpath.

For once we are not asking to spend up large but coming up with a more economic solution which would be another asset to our beautiful town.

As there has been a number of comments on this matter, I would like to ask through this media for comments from Councillors Rawlinson and Braam.

What’s wrong with our council?

They could make this into one of the best assets Ashburton has ever had.

M.J Haskett, on Tuesday, August 7 in a letter to the editor, hit the nail on the head with his lovely vision of a Chinese Garden and settlement with all these sweet buildings to offset it perfectly (which Dunedin hasn’t got) on Allens Road.

All I have ever wanted to do is visit the Chinese garden in Dunedin, but still haven’t had a chance. Imagine all those old buildings amongst a beautiful Chinese garden.

They could all be turned into little Chinese tourist shops, selling local products – manuka honey, local flowers that the Chinese hardly touch or see a real flower now.

Maybe some little lambs and calves could be housed in or beside one of these buildings for tourists to touch and see.

Daffodils, blue bells, and snowdrops abounding in the spring.

Daphnes, honeysuckle close by to offset the animal smells – the sky is the limit.

I’m sure councillor Leen Braam could come up with a beautiful setting for visitors and locals to visit and before David Askin gets a foot in the door to say they are too busy to cope with this, I’m sure a lot of local retired people would love to meet on a day a week and volunteer to upkeep this settlement. It would be a pleasure to

look after a Chinese garden voluntarily – I am one to put my hand up.

Keep the oldies fit and get to know their neighbours – we could also do Tai Chi and get together twice a week on a flat bed somewhere.

When is our council going to learn from its mistakes. Some people like to see what was, not what’s new, ie; take Shanty Town on the Coast for an example, always very busy with visitors.

It was also a big mistake to let Farmers Corner shift out of town.

It was in the perfect position on the corner of Havelock and East Streets with Baring Square which all the tourists took their photos in.

They do much business in our town (just ask Tony Todd) and now the buses pass right through without stopping.

You could get them back diverting them to Allens Road if you approach Farmers Corner in the right manner.

Rates bills Receiving my rates bill today, has come as a bit of a shock, even though it has been publicised that the rates will be payable in four instalments instead of six.

My gripe is, they haven’t changed the first payment date to September 20 as first payment.

Giving residents 90 days opposed to 60 days to save the extra money.

There will be a lot of people out there who save a little every week to pay their rates, now their first instalment will have approximately another $200 added on.

It will pan out at the end of the day, but the shock of the first instalment.

And I hope for the good of all, if anyone struggles to pay by the 20th of August you don’t put the boot in with a 10 per cent late penalty fee.

Not very well thought out.

Also, it is very cunning how it all coincides with the rates increases.

Flat roofs When is our council going to learn from its mistakes?

It amuses me that they build an art centre with a flat roof. Especially after an out of town planner, who planned our library and doesn’t realise how our area can rain down very heavily, or hail, or snow at times.

So, we have a leaky library. Flat roof, do you think? Then to top it off they build a brand new Art Centre and Museum and some poor lady is running every time mopping and setting up dehumidifiers (that the public have probably paid for) to dry up a wet atmosphere. Flat roof, do you think?

When will the council learn?

Can’t say I have studied the EA Network Centre’s roof.

Calving gets off to mild start

By Tim Cronshaw Winter started off cold and wet with sunshine a scarce commodity, but calving got away to a good start, assisted by the benign weather.

Dairy NZ head of South Island farm performance Tony Finch said farmers were enjoying a reasonably mild winter after getting through typical wintry conditions in June.

Since then the weather has been in a kind place and had contributed to more calves arriving than expected, he said.

“It has been a pretty good run. June was a bit difficult as it was … wet and cold. At one stage sunshine hours were down to nine hours midway through and it was pretty bleak. But it has [bounced back] and has been a pretty mild winter.’’

Feed growth rates were tracking above average.

This could pose some challenges with pasture quality as grass growth got ahead of herd appetites, but farmers would be on top of this for their spring rotations and would be constantly managing pasture decisions.

Winter was far from over and it was too early to talk about topping pastures for silage, Finch said.

He said the end of August always seemed to bring one more storm and farmers would be prepared for this eventuality.

At this stage farmers were happy with a good start to the season. There seemed to be a lot of calves arriving and calving appeared to be slightly more advanced than previously, he said.

“There are a lot more calves on the ground than budgeted.

“The winter has been mild to a degree and has been dry and it bodes well for calving for both man and beast.’’

Finch said farmers were facing many challenges, including hiring and retaining a good workforce and dealing with mycoplasma bovis, but they at least had the comfort of knowing the milk payout and advance payments were in positive territory.

“M. bovis was [causing] a level of anxiety and all farmers are either affected directly or indirectly and we have to maintain a business as usual [attitude] as much as possible.’’

More calves would suggest good calving rates with fewer empties in the herds. Cows were in a happy place with cow condition at sought-after levels as a result of good feed utilisation.

DairyNZ has yet to compile empty percentages for the province’s cows.

Finch said mild winters were beneficial for staff and they would be feeling more energised than if they were trudging through muddy paddocks.

Shareholders uneasy about chairman change handling

New Fonterra chairman John Monaghan will chair his first board meeting in the job today as questions persist about governance quality around the sudden change at the top table of New Zealand’s biggest company.

Fonterra’s announcement on July 27 that chairman John Wilson had stood down with immediate effect as “he recovers from a recent serious health scare” and “significant surgery” within the past month, surprised the dairy co-operative’s supplying shareholders and the sharemarket.

Monaghan, a farmer-elected Fonterra director since 2008, was named to take over from the embattled Wilson who was criticised by the Beehive recently for Fonterra’s heavy capital investment losses in China.

While Fonterra is not a public company, it offers listed investment units to the public.

Experienced sharemarket company directors have said normal practice in the case of serious illness of a chairperson or chief executive would be a market announcement at the time.

“I would have thought for any company with a high profile and national significance that a market announcement to that effect would be made,” said one.

Another said it seemed odd that Wilson had had surgery and was getting treatment but that was the first the market knew of it.

The Fonterra Shareholders’ Council, which represents Fonterra’s 10,000-or so supplier-

owners, learned the day before the announcement that Wilson was stepping down, council leader Duncan Coull has said.

Meanwhile, influential shareholders continue to agitate about the timing of the announcement, four days after nominations closed for upcoming director elections.

Wilson was due to retire under rotation this year. He did not reveal if he would be standing again before the health issue announcement.

Shareholders who contacted the Herald said the look of nominations could have been different if the shareholder base had known Wilson’s position earlier.

However, under Fonterra’s two types of nomination process, farmer-shareholders can until September 20 put their names forward for election under the “self-nomination process”.

Directors seeking re-election usually choose the other “independent nomination process” which closed on July 23.

Asked why no earlier notice had been given of Wilson’s health issue to shareholders and the market, Fonterra said in a statement it was “difficult to answer” the Herald’s questions while protecting Wilson’s right to privacy.

The timing of Wilson’s serious health scare was totally outside his control, the company said.

“After considering the advice of his medical team and consulting his family and the board, Mr Wilson made the decision to step down as chairman.”

Peeling back the complex layers of overseas ownership A

couple of prominent rural sales have put overseas ownership in the spotlight again and shown that its complexity is beyond skin deep.

The first was a week ago when Mt White Station, near Arthur’s Pass, was sold to a Czech Republic businessman for an undisclosed price. Technically the pastoral lease was transferred as only 678 hectares on freehold land and 39,337ha is Crown lease land.

At first glance this is yet another case of a wealthy overseas businessman pandering to his ego and vanity by buying a colossal high country estate.

The truth is that Lukas Travnicek has spent a few years in New Zealand with his family in Taranaki, but returned to his home country about 15 months ago to renew ties.

It would be fair to say the average Kiwi is uneasy with big chunks of high country, dairy and other farmland going outside of New Zealand hands and vital businesses going to foreign ownership.

On the first point, many farmers take the view that they reserve the right to sell their land to domestic and offshore buyers in order to maximise its value.

They often point out that the land is still there when owners move or pass on, although it should be pointed out that big corporates have much greater longevity.

The reality is that Mt White is a vast farm and needs deep pockets to bring it up to speed.

As much as we look dewyeyed on our iconic high country stations, they don’t deliver great returns on their capital outlay and often the best return is when they are sold.

The coalition Government has vowed that it will tighten overseas investment and it’s noticeable that properties passing through Overseas Investment Office (OIO) approval have slowed down.

The OIO put restrictions on Travnicek, who must return to New Zealand in about a year and live here indefinitely. Otherwise, he must sell the property.

It does make you wonder that if the same approach was applied to residential sales what the reaction of vendors would be if they couldn’t necessarily sell their homes to the highest bidder.

Most Kiwis take the view that new arrivals are welcome, par-

ticularly in rural areas, as long as they invest in the community.

This view doesn’t always extend to absentee overseas owners.

The bottom line for the high country especially is often access continuing to be made available for average Kiwis.

Other nationalities don’t always understand this, but Travnicek appears open to providing some degree of walking access.

The other big transaction was PGG Wrightson (PGW) entering a deal to sell its seed business for $421 million to Danish company DLF Seeds. The sale is subject to approval from the OIO, Commerce Commission and other regulatory bodies, as well as PGW shareholders.

PGW is partly overseas owned with 50 per cent of its shareholding held by Chinese group Agria Corp.

The question is, why would the rural service company sell its valuable seed business – the largest of its division earners.

PGW chiefs explain that the seed game might be a good earner, but developing the business offshore is a cash-heavy undertaking.

They also see good business opportunities from retaining a relationship with their Danish partner.

Studies show that Denmark is in the top 10 for reputable countries, so it’s hard to get too upset with the Scandinavians investing here. But how would we feel if it was American, Chinese or Australian investment?

Ask the average person on the street about their view and their response might differ for each scenario. It’s complex.

Rules tighten for foreign students The Government has made it harder for international students to work in New Zealand after they finish studying.

The immigration changes, which come into force in November, will bring in stricter rules for work visas, especially for lowerlevel qualifications or foreign students who are studying in Auckland.

Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway said the changes ended the “bums on seats” approach of the previous Government and emphasised quality over quantity.

“These new immigration settings will better match the skills that people study in New Zealand with the skills that employers need to grow their businesses,” he said.

“Our changes will support the attraction of international students studying at higher levels of study, and those who undertake high quality, sub-degree courses that deliver the skills needed in our growing economy.”

Under the existing rules, international students can get a twoyear work visa in New Zealand if

they get a full-time offer of work in their field after they complete their studies.

The Government has scrapped that option for all levels of education.

“The removal of employerassisted post-study work rights at all levels will help reduce the risk of migrant exploitation, and better protect New Zealand’s international reputation,” LeesGalloway said.

Instead, students who gain lower qualifications like certificates or diplomas will be able to get a one-year post-study visa, with an additional year for graduate diploma graduates working towards registration in a trade or professional body.

Students who get these qualifications outside of Auckland can get a two-year post-study visa, as long as their studies are completed by the end of December 2021.

Lees-Galloway said this would provide incentives for students to study and work in the regions.

Expensive typo For most of us, the biggest consequence of a typo is a bit of embarrassment. But for Appliances Online founder John Winning, a simple mistake ended up costing almost $A100,000 ($110,000).

The incident occurred late last year, when a technical glitch meant a Kitchenaid mixer which is usually worth $A799 was accidentally listed for just $A281 on the site.

Within 12 hours, 190 mixers had been ordered at the wrong price — meaning the 34-year-old faced a tough choice: sacrifice almost $A100,000, or risk potentially losing 190 customers forever.

Winning honoured the price in the interests of investing in customer relationships.

Standing desks could help you live longer Standing desks could increase life expectancy of workers, according to a new study.

The study, published on Monday by Australia’s Deakin University, showed that standing at work contributed to higher life year (LY) gains and higher health-adjusted life years (HALY), reports The Guardian.

Lead researcher Dr Lan Gao said spending excessive amounts of time sitting at a desk was associated with serious diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

“Adopting this workplace intervention also has the potential to reduce absenteeism and improve productivity,” Gao said.

“The introduction of sit-stand desks, alongside associated supports, is a cost-effective and in-

novative way to promote the health of Australia’s workforce.”

The study found the net cost of providing workers with sitstand desks was about $A344 ($378) per person.

Some 231 desk-based workers, aged between 24-65 years, working across 14 worksites in one organisation participated in the study.

However, some studies have cast doubt over the health benefits of standing at work.

Researchers at Exeter University in the UK and University College London followed more than 5000 people over a 16-year period and found that sitting down was no worse for you than standing – providing you had regular exercise.

Sales press dropped New Zealand and Australian bank ANZ has announced it will drop all sales components from frontline retail sales incentives in New Zealand from October this year.

It follows claims from some bank workers they had pressure on them to sell products, like loans, to people who could not service them.

There was some concern that sales targets might cause retail staff to sell products that don’t meet customers’ needs, ANZ’s managing director retail and business banking Antonia Wat-

son said yesterday.

“We trust our staff to do the right thing by our customers and we know they consider customers’ genuine needs when they talk with them. Removing sales targets altogether will give our customers total confidence that we’re focused on doing the right thing by them.

“The environment is clearly changing and the feedback we’re getting and what we’re seeing in Australia suggests this is the right approach, regardless of how direct or indirect our sales targets were or how minimal.” - NZME

New Zealand landlords are demanding copies of prospective tenants’ bank statements in a move that’s been denounced as “unethical”, and raised privacy and discrimination concerns. As the pressures on the rental market increases with about a third of all Kiwis now renting, landlords and property managers are seeking further proof that potential tenants can cough up the rent. Aucklandbased property manager Rachel Kann told a social services select committee last month (July 25), which was hearing submissions on the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill (No 2) to scrap letting fees, that she routinely asks for bank statements.

Robertson staunch Finance Minister Grant Robertson stuck to his guns on the Government economic direction yesterday in the face of the weakest business confidence in a decade. Speaking to a debt market summit in Auckland’s SkyCity, Robertson stressed this country was a good place to do business. It came after the latest NZ Business Outlook slumped to levels not seen since the global financial crisis.

Robertson, in his speech, repeated statistics as to why New Zealand’s economy remained strong. “We are in surplus – projected to be $3.1 billion this year, rising to $7.3b by 2021/22. A diet developed in the 1920s to treat children with epilepsy is suddenly all the rage. The ketogenic diet, or “keto diet”, has reportedly been endorsed by celebrities and even athletes are giving it a go.

Earthquake deaths top 130 Aid began reaching isolated areas of the Indonesian island struggling after a powerful earthquake that killed at least 131 people, while rescuers yesterday doubled down on efforts to find the dead, pulling another body from the rubble.

Volunteers and rescue personnel were erecting more temporary shelters for the tens of thousands of people left homeless on Lombok by the magnitude 7.0 quake on Sunday evening. Water, food and medical supplies were being distributed from trucks.

The military said five planes carrying food, medicine, blankets, field tents and water tankers left Jakarta for the island early Wednesday.

A woman’s body was recovered from the rubble of a collapsed mosque on Wednesday morning in Bangsal district in the north of the island.

The national disaster agency’s spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the death toll had risen to 131 from 105 announced Tuesday.

NSW entirely gripped by drought Australia’s most populous state was declared entirely in drought on Wednesday and struggling farmers were given new authority to shoot kangaroos that compete with livestock for sparse pasture during the most intense dry spell in more than 50 years.

Much of Australia’s southeast is struggling with drought. But the drought conditions in New South Wales state this year have been the driest and most widespread since 1965.

The state government said Wednesday that 100 percent of New South Wales’ land area of more than 800,000 square kilometers was now in drought.

Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair said farmers were enduring one of the driest Southern Hemisphere winters on record.

“This is tough. There isn’t a person in the state that isn’t hoping to see some rain for our farmers and regional communities,” Blair said in a statement.

Farm reservoirs have dried up and crops are failing.

State and federal governments are providing financial help, but not enough for many farmers.

With dry conditions forecast to continue for the next three months, farmers had to decide whether to continue the expensive and laborious task of hand-feeding cattle and sheep or sell their livestock.

The state government on Wednesday also lifted the number of kangaroos that farmers are allowed to shoot and reduced bureaucratic red tape facing land holders applying for permission to shoot.

The requirement to tag dead kangaroos to keep a tally of the number shot across the state had been dispensed with.

“Many farmers are taking livestock off

But Ray Borda, president of the Kangaroo Industries Association of Australia, which represents commercial shooters who hunt kangaroos for meat and leather, raised animal welfare concerns about the regulation changes.

“Anybody on the land that will make a

phone call to the Department of Environment can get permission to shoot almost whatever they want to shoot and it’s unaudited and unchecked and that’s our concern – animal welfare,” Borda told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The government would have been better off subsidising professional shooters to reduce kangaroo numbers more humanely, he said.

“We see this as probably the worst possible outcome for the kangaroo, but I’ve got to emphasise we do understand the plight that farmers are in,” Borda said.

A rep for the Friends star confirmed that he was taken to an LA hospital for the procedure. “He is grateful for the concern and asks for continued privacy as he heals,” he said. Gastrointestinal perforation, while also known as ruptured bowel, can occur along any point in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, and unusually requires emergency surgery.

Cooked spaghetti Fresh basil Grated cheese ■ Meatballs: Add the mince to a large bowl with the breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, egg, herbs, tomato paste, olive oil and season. Mix gently to combine using clean hands. Shape the mixture into balls slightly bigger than a golf ball. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes to set.

■ Heat a little oil over a mediumhigh heat in a large frying pan and brown the meatballs all over (do this in batches). Once browned, remove carefully with tongs and set aside on a plate.

■ Sauce: Drain any oil from the pan and return it over a high heat. Add the wine (or stock) and let it bubble for 30 seconds,

scraping the pan with a wooden spoon to incorporate all those crunchy caramelised meat juices from the meatballs.

■ Add the stock, tomato paste, tomatoes, oregano, balsamic vinegar and sugar. Stir. Add the meatballs back to the pan and simmer uncovered for 1520 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to a pasta sauce consistency (turn the meatballs over once). Taste and season as required.

■ To serve: Toss the sauce through the just-cooked drained spaghetti in the spaghetti cooking pot. Add to serving bowls and sprinkle with cheese and basil.

Ashburton Golf Club Young Wilson blew the field away last Saturday, with a stunning 89, for a nett 60 and 48 points, to pick up Radius Care player of the day and 12 valuable RMF Cup points.

He was a good 6 shots clear of the Stoddart boys, and Peter Walker whose good form continued, closing the gap to 3 points at the top of the RMF table, just behind Phil Kerr. The RMF cup is really heating up now, with 6 more rounds to go before the top 30 cut, so everyone is jostling for position and not wanting to miss a scoring week. That was the whole plan for the RMF cup, getting more and more players to come along and play during the winter months. Strolling around the course though last Saturday, between my many shots, I had to pinch myself that it was actually winter golf. The sun was shining, plenty of run on the fairways, (if you hit them) beautiful slick greens and full fields, it’s a joy to play, just wish I could do the course justice with decent golf.

Seeing young Wilson at the front of the field and looking around the club, it is plain to see that the millennial revolution is on its way. Our under 30’s sub has certainly been a great success. Well done to everyone who got that over the line.

Talking of younger players, it was noted on Saturday that young Jordy Bird had got himself tidied up at long last, he did look quite the gent and a proper golfer, until it was mentioned that it wasn’t him and was in fact the better looking of the Bird twins, Thomas, who had come down to join in the fun. Well done Tom, the looks and the skills, it was just like Arnie and Danny Devito all over again.

This Saturday round 2 of the Brandon Cup, can Wilson back it up? 12 more points on offer for RMF Cup. Then on Sunday, we have more embarrassment around the district with Pennants golf. Results next week. Good golfing.

Ashburton Herb Group At the July Herb meeting members enjoyed various soups, with herb breads and pesto. This was followed by our AGM and election of office bearers which remained the same. With subs at $20 and a suggested donation of a gold coin at each meeting.

Margaret read an entertaining article about how the older generation looked after our planet, compared with the modern ways. This was followed by a very interesting talk by Pam Whitford about Federation Rules and then the four most versatile herbs which most people could grow.

1. Parsley grows in most temperate regions. Parsley is full of Vitamin C, Iodine, Iron and Magnesium and can be used in most savoury cooking. It aids digestion, relieves flatulence and is a diuretic. It is used in soups, casseroles, salads and fish dishes.

2. Sage came from the Middle East and was traded in olden days. Rich in Vitamin K and A. There are 700 varieties of sage in the world. Sage helps digestion, can be used for mouth ulcers, and for cleaning teeth. Best used fresh and useful against carrot fly.

3. Rosemary is a native of the Mediterranean. Good for memory. The oil is very stimulating, bees love Rosemary and honey produced from those fed on it is extremely delicious. Rosemary is a stimulant, cardio tonic, diuretic and when burned will purify the air, this method used to be used in hospitals.

4. Thyme, native to most parts of Europe. Likes a dry, well drained position. Can make a good ground cover and used in seasoning, especially poultry.

Several members attended the very informative, Back to Basics, an educational and hands on display held in Tinwald end of June.

For our August meeting our guest was Knox Hampton, who showed us how to make cards, we all went home with a treasured handmade greeting card. At our next meeting in September, our guest speaker will be from Back to Basics, who imports organic products for sale. Ashburton Photographic Society We started the month listening to member Cindy Lovett tell us about her trip to Spain, we were lucky enough to see the photos that she had taken and learn about this interesting location.

Then 22 members headed off to Twizel for a weekend fieldtrip with tutor Scott Fowler. We were lucky to learn a great deal from this great tutor.

Our Photojournalism competition was well supported and our judge was impressed with the entries from our members.

The New Zealand Blind Foundation Ashburton Community Committee 2018 The committee, our members and volunteers, have had a busy year, with nine committee meetings including lunch and entertainment plus seven outings. We are very appreciative of the time that our many entertainers have given to us. Outings included attending Ashburton Rotary Club’s afternoon of entertainment and afternoon tea for the 69th year, and Tinwald Red Cross who have also been entertaining us for those 69 years. We helped celebrate Patricia’s 100th birthday, Rona McConnell’s 30 years on the committee and Ossie’s 100th. Christmas Dinner was held at the MSA and 2018 began with a BBQ at Coniston, generously hosted by Donald & Carol Williamson. The Tinwald Stables was the venue for meeting up with the Christchurch Blind Association.

The two collections for the Blind - Red Puppy Appeal and Blind Week, were both organised by Andrew McDonald. We thank Andrew, collectors, other clubs that assisted and our own Committee members for the success of both these fund raising collections.

Our new base is at the Plains Museum, we meet on the fourth Thursday of each month. We are grateful to Lorayne Oakley.

Cavendish Club Arts & Crafts Arts and Crafts on Friday July 27 were hosts at the Cavendish Club and the speaker was Tash Baker who spoke of her training to become a hairdresser – fashion that changes hairstyle colour and remember Ann of Green Gables green hair, and one would need great courage or youth. We all have an ever growing hair crop and one came away from listening to Tash’s delightful and informative talk that change is in the air and after all if one changes one’s mind we can grow some more, wonderful to have such independence. Thank you Tash.

Drama Circle Our afternoon started with readings by Ruth then Joan with two humorous stories, Noeline followed with an Irish Joke “Coastie” by Joe Charles was well read by Judith. After another couple of good Irish jokes, Judith read “Thoughts” by Australian Artist Pat Brooks. Our sketch Cinderella was performed by Joan, Janet, Jean, Ruth and Yvonne, it was hilarious, well done girls. We then had a cooking lecture by Lynne, wife of the Squire and Rona and Lynne finished the afternoon’s entertainment with some more Irish jokes. A lovely afternoon teas was then enjoyed by all.

Library Circle Library Circle members hosted an enjoyable and interesting meeting when Kate White, coordinator of Mid Canterbury Time Bank was their speaker.

Kate spoke of her early life in Mosgiel, a year spent with a scholarship in Denmark and then life dedicated to study at Otago University. With a wide variety of interests which includes languages, theology, the humanities, the environment, travel Kate is now living in Ashburton and teaching Maori studies at Borough School. Observing how communities function in many parts of the world led to Kate’s interest in Time Banking with its aims that members will Connect, Contribute and Belong.

Congratulations to Mrs Rona Hayward for 25 years of service and Mrs Judith Hughes for 20 years. Joy Wilson resigned from the position of Vice Chair that she has held for 9 years. Alan Hall was welcomed to the committee. In total this committee has given over 200 years of volunof help, companionship and satisfaction. Kate illustrated these principles in action with examples of members helping and befriending others, thus enriching themselves and their/our community.

Run and Walk Ashburton Another busy week for members of Run and Walk Ashburton.

Tuesday sprint session had a group of eight, which included our youngest members Alex and Sidney Jackson who attend regularly with their Mum and Dad and have energy which we are hugely envious of. Well done boys we love your enthusiasm and energy. We all set our own pace this week as a few were banking their energy for the weekend ahead.

Wednesday evening five walkers had another quick walk around their town block. Everyone is enjoying the nights getting a little brighter!

Saturday August 4, the 7.30am crew of five walkers, another two newbies this week which was fantastic, did a solid 6km walk down the south side river track and were joined by five runners which did varying distances up to 10km. Two runners had earlier added 6km on in town before joining with the later crew, enjoying getting in a few extra kilometers and time on their feet.

The afternoon social meet at 1.30pm attracted 16 walkers and three runners who went down the north side river track starting at the Melrose Road end and turned near the bridge and then back up to Argyle Park. It was a lovely sunny afternoon.

Sunday August 5, 17 walkers and runners, including our four newest walkers competed at Lake Hood in the SI Half Marathon and 7km events in both the walking and running sections. An overcast dry day provided perfect conditions for those competing. We had a great team of supporters which was appreciated by all members as they completed each loop. A fantastic effort by all who entered with great results and special congratulations to our podium winners. The Club gazebo provided a meeting place and ideal shelter to enjoy a BBQ at the finish.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury Another big weekend for our shooters at the National Indoor Championships shot at various venues throughout the country. Christchurch was the nearest venue and was well attended by shooters from Ashburton.

Lanelle McArthur beat her father on count back to secure 7th place. Lanelle scored 397.26/400.40 including her very first double card possible (200.12) while Steve was on exactly the same score in 8th place. Shania Harrison-Lee continued her good run to finish 2nd in B grade with 396.22. Michaela Smith shot well to gain 9th place in B grade with 390.17.

On the club scene this week there were so many 100’s scored that we may have to stop calling them “possibles” and refer to them as “probables” There were 8 scores of 100 posted with the stand out being the 100.10 scored by Sandy Bennett.

With attention being focussed on our top shooters at the Andrews and Faulkner match and the upcoming North Island V South Island we have not been paying as much attention to our sibling Phoenix club as perhaps we should.

A count up this week reveals that in just this season 21 new shooters, both adult and junior, have advanced from shooting with a rest to shooting in the competitive manner with a sling. Many of these new shooters have indicated a strong desire to remain in the sport and planning is already under way to provide advanced coaching and a clear pathway of opportunity into the future. As a part of this planning the Mid Canterbury Target Shooting Association has offered and been granted hosting rights for the 2020 Andrews and Faulkner competition. Nothing breeds success like success.

Inter-island pride on the line Some of the biggest names in indoor bowls in New Zealand will base themselves in Ashburton for the next few days ahead of the annual Inter Island Match against their Southern counterparts on Saturday.

But before the big dance, the side – which has been touring the South Island and playing districts from Southland to the top of the South Island – will tackle 20 of Ashburton’s best players tonight in their final representative fixture of the tour.

The North Island side has had a successful tour thus far winning their fixtures against Southland, South Otago, Otago, North and Central Otago, the West Coast and a top of the South team featuring players from Nelson, Marlborough and Golden Bay and Motueka.

They were due to play Canterbury last night in what will have been one of their toughest matches to date.

They will be expecting the same when they arrive in Ashburton this morning, with the Ashburton representative side enjoying a near-perfect season on the mats.

Ashburton has won fixtures against North Canterbury, Ellesmere, Canterbury and South Canterbury while also picking up the annual triangular tournament against North Otago and Timaru and also the quadrangular tournament against Otago, North Otago and South Canterbury.

They also won their Patterson zone playoff last month earning the right to head to the national

Swimmers boosted by big medal haul A big medal haul at the Swimming Canterbury West Coast Short Course Championships at the weekend has given Ashburton swimmers a big confidence boost with the South Island Championships just around the corner.

Six members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team headed to Christchurch to compete at the Canterbury/West Coast championships at the weekend and exceeded expectations, bringing home a number of medals and new personal bests.

It was the first time swimming at the championships for Hannah King and Kylana PeauafiSymonds, who are both 12 years old, and both had to swim against other competitors up to two years older in the 12-14 year age group. Both gained personal best times and King qualified for the finals in 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

Mitchell Veix, 13, was also swimming in the age group 1214 years and had an exceptional swim in the 800 freestyle to gain

a silver medal, taking 53.58 seconds off his personal best time.

He also made the finals in the 200m freestyle where he finished fifth.

Brea Roderick, 16, also had a fantastic swim to win silver in the 800m freestyle, taking 10.90 seconds off her personal best time.

Bree Middleton, 15, swam well in the 1500m freestyle to win gold, winning by nearly two minutes in a time of 17:50.75 minutes.

Middleton also won gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle and a silver in the 100m freestyle.

Blake Farr, 14, produced amazing results, getting into all finals and gaining gold in 800m freestyle with a 34.31 second personal best time.

He then went on to get silver in the 200 individual medley and bronze in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and 400m and 100m IM. The South Island Championships will be held in Christchurch from August 24-26, with the New Zealand Short Course Championships being held in Auckland later this year, in October.

The Warriors have signed highlyregarded Todd Payten as an NRL assistant coach from next season.

Payten is currently serving as an assistant coach at North Queensland but will join the Warriors on a three-year contract as a replacement for Andrew McFadden who will to return to Australia with his family at the end of the season after six years with the Warriors. The 39-year-old has also previously worked as an assistant coach at Wests Tigers and will continue his development under Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney and alongside fellow assistants Stacey Jones and Tony Iro. “Todd’s a young coach who has made a great impression and we’re really excited about having him on board from next season,” said Kearney.

Slater to retire Melbourne legend Billy Slater is leaving rugby league on his own terms - as the game’s best fullback. Sitting alongside coach Craig Bellamy, an emotional Slater ended months of speculation on Wednesday when he confirmed that after 16 NRL seasons with the Storm, 2018 would be his last.

He bows out with a bulging trophy cabinet that includes two NRL premierships, two Clive Churchill Medals, a Dally M Medal and two Wally Lewis Medals – the latest from this year’s State of Origin series. The 35-year-old said while he felt he physically could have played on he was certain he was making the right decision. The Melbourne Rebels will conduct a club review after two major off-field incidents soured their 2018 Super Rugby season. At one stage looking in contention for a first finals appearance, the Rebels slipped out of the post-season race and then imploded off the field. In Dunedin last month New Zealand police arrested and charged flanker Amanaki Mafi following allegations of a serious assault on his teammate Lopeti Timani.

The pair were fined $15,000 each by the club. A week after that players Pone Fa’amausili and Hunter Paisami were suspended indefinitely for their involvement in a Melbourne fight that left a man in hospital. Paisami was charged by police. Led by Melbourne chairman Paul Docherty, the Rebels said the review will consider all aspects of the club’s approach to welfare and integrity.

Time for chasers to step up

With just two rounds remaining before Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition heads into finals stage, the time has come for some teams to step up.

Only one team can really say they’re safe in a playoff berth, and that’s Celtic A. They have gone through the whole season unbeaten so far and are firm favourites to reclaim the title they also won last season, but it’s a tight tussle down the table, with little separating the competition’s five other teams.

As the weeks have gone on, those five teams have really started to step it up and more than one of them have given Celtic A a run for their money.

Hampstead A were the latest to push them in last week’s round, and they claimed a bonus point from that match – one of two bonus points they’ve picked up in the third and final round of the competition so far, along with a win over Celtic B, which has them currently in fourth spot on the overall standings.

Celtic A are well out in front on the points table, on 12 points with three wins from three outings in the final round so far, and Methven A and Ashburton College A are currently tied for second with eight points apiece.

With those two teams set to take each other on in tonight’s penultimate round, it should make things even more interesting in the middle of the points table.

Barring a draw, either Methven A or Ashburton College A would move into clear second spot tonight, while Hampstead A have a chance to move into outright third if they beat Mt Somers.

Wins have been just out of the reach of Gemma Boon and her Celtic B team mates in their first few outings in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier one competition, and tonight they take on their club’s A team.

They really need to win tonight against Hampstead A to give themselves a chance of making the top four, with a tough ask awaiting them in the final round in the form of Celtic A. Celtic A’s opponents in tonight’s penultimate round are Celtic B, the side which gained

promotion from premier two for the season’s third and final round.

It was the first time Celtic has boasted two teams in Mid Canterbury Netball’s top flight and although Celtic B are yet to pick up a win in premier one, they’ve shown they are more than up to the task, pushing most of their oppositions early before letting them back into the game.

In premier two action tonight, United A – the team relegated from premier one for the season’s final round – has picked up some big wins over the past three weeks and will be looking to add another win against Rakaia A tonight.

Meanwhile, Ashburton College B are set to take on Southern A, and Celtic C play Methven B.

Dane Coles has opened up about the creeping doubts of whether he would return to the rugby field following a horror run of injuries.

The All Blacks hooker last took the rugby field on November 11 last year when he injured his ACL in a test win over France in Paris.

The latest injury blow followed after a stint off the field with concussion issues earlier last year which saw Coles miss the test series against the British and Irish Lions.

His latest rehabilitation was then hampered by a calf injury which followed surgery on his knee.

Coles admits there were times during his injury spell where he doubted whether he would return to the game. He wants to become a fireman in post-rugby life.

“I’ve had a pretty frustrating couple of years,” he told Radio Sport’s Jason Pine.

“You have times where you’re like ‘is this really worth it?’ or ‘is this going to come right?’.”

Despite missing the entire Super Rugby season the 56-test veteran was named in Steve Hansen’s All Blacks squad for the Rugby Championship.

Mid Canty A team named Mid Canterbury’s A rugby team for the 2018 season has been named.

The Mid Canterbury A, or development side, will play South Canterbury Development in a curtain-raiser to the Mid Canterbury Heartland Championship’s pre-season clash against South Canterbury at Hinds on Saturday.

The development game will kick off at 12.50pm at the Hinds Domain, to be followed by the pre-season clash between the two Heartland teams at 2.30pm.

Landmark season for Carston

Masters set for short course

Entries might be down on past years, but organisers of this weekend’s South Island Masters Swimming Short Course Championships are still planning on putting on a great event.

Ashburton Masters Swimmers spokesperson Steve Prescott said only 48 entries had been received for the event which would kick off at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre aquatic centre tomorrow night and continue on Saturday morning.

burton had hosted the event, with entries for both of the past events up around the 70-mark.

Prescott said the low numbers this year were disappointing.

“It’s really, really sad, and we don’t know why,” Prescott said.

“There’s not a lot we can do about it though, we will still run it.”

With some of those who had entered coming from the North Island, people had committed to coming to Ashburton for the weekend, Prescott said.

“So it’s not what we wanted it to be, but it will go ahead.

“I guess there’s so many other events on these days and people just don’t have the money to go to everything, so they have got to prioritise what they are going to go to.”

Eight Ashburton swimmers will be taking part, including Prescott himself, but one of the club’s oldest members who competed last year – 91-year-old Ellis Buchanan – would not be hitting the water this year as he’d been unwell.

The bulk of the entries are from Dunedin, with about 20 making the trek up from Prescott’s former home town. Prescott said only

five swimmers from Christchurch were coming, with the rest coming from Auckland, Wellington, Timaru and the West Coast.

Masters swimming was for people aged 25 and over, so this weekend’s meet was likely to have swimmers ranging in age from their 20s through to their 70s taking part.

Competition would get under way at 5.30pm on Friday night and restart again at 8.30am on Saturday. It was likely to be wrapped up by lunchtime, and a dinner would follow on Saturday night.

Riccarton-based trainer Andrew Carston is looking forward to celebrating a landmark season at the 2018 New Zealand Thoroughbred Awards evening, to be held at Ellerslie on August 26.

Having trained 16 individual winners, of a combined 20 races during the 2017/18 racing season, Carston will be presented with the gavelhouse.com Newcomer to Training award.

Last awarded to Lance O’Sullivan for the 2005/06 racing season, the award was resurrected by the New Zealand Trainers’ Association last season.

The award is open to trainers that have been training on their own account for less than five seasons, with the winner determined by the number of individual winners during the season.

“It is great we are recognising those new to the training ranks and promoting the up-andcomers in the industry,” New Zealand Trainers’ Association Executive Officer Wendy Cooper said.

“It is appreciated that it’s a huge undertaking for someone to become a trainer and this is one way of rewarding those who make the commitment.”

Carston has just commenced his fourth season training in his own right, having previously trained in partnership with Jan Hay. With 16 individual winners, Carston finished eight wins clear of his nearest rival.

“It’s a great initiative and I’m glad that the Trainers’ Association have brought it back and grateful to Gavelhouse for their sponsorship,” Carston said.

12-month plan comes off with Jack The emotion showed on the faces of trainers Brian and Shane Anderton after Jackfrost fulfilled a 12-month plan when winning the Grand National Hurdles (4200m) at Riccarton yesterday.

“It’s not often you set them for a race like this and it comes off, but it did today,” said Brian Anderton, who along with his wife, Lorraine, bred the eight-year-old.

Making the occasion even more memorable for the Andertons is the fact Jackfrost is a product of their White Robe Lodge stud operation, being by resident sire Gallant Guru from Vital Note, a daughter of their former successful sire Yamanin Vital.

It was Brian Anderton’s fourth win in the feature, the first two being with Bymai in 1980 and Lord Venture six years later, and the second Grand National Hurdles win with son Shane as a training partner.

The partners won the event 17 years ago with Narousa when ridden by Shane, who was given all the credit for Jackfrost’s major win.

“Shane has done all the work – I’ve been away on holiday,” Brian Anderton said.

It was yet another example of how the successful Anderton stable ticks, with a steady supply of winners both on the flat and over fences.

jumpers as in past years, Jackfrost has stood out as a horse with an exciting jumps future.

He was forwarded on to the Anderton stable by Riccarton trainer Andrew Carston with the belief he could make his mark as a jumper and the Andertons have taken him

to the next level.

He emerged as a serious Grand National Hurdles hope when winning on the first two days of last year’s Grand National meeting and it was then the decision was made to put him aside and set him for the Hospital-

ity New Zealand-sponsored race.

Two seconds and a win at Timaru put him on target and his first day run at Riccarton, when second to favourite Laekeeper, showed he was ready for the big challenge.

He was beaten three-quarters of a length by the Waikato visitor in the Sydenham Hurdles (3100m) after losing ground near the 700m when awkwardly placed.

But rider Stuart Higgins wasn’t about to get into the same trouble this time. He had him travelling nicely in fourth position most of the way and looked the winner a long way from home.

Higgins, having his second ride in the race, had him clear halfway down the home straight and Jackfrost skipped the last fence and went on to win by eight and a half lengths from Laekeeper.

“I wouldn’t admit it before, but I cost him a couple of placings with my rides earlier in the year, but they (the Andertons) stuck with me,” Higgins said.

“From the first time I rode him everyone was excited and he’s lived up to expectations.”

The joy of the win was multiplied by the huge number of owners which make up the Frosty’s Shoutin The Beers Syndicate, all echoing the praise for trainers, jockey and horse.

After years of coming second, Celtic’s under-18 rugby team finally got the chance to celebrate a finals win on Saturday.

Celtic under-18 manager Glenda Donaldson said winning the local competition was a massive deal for the young team, after hav-

ing come so close to taking titles in the past, but falling in the final.

This year was their year. The team started the season with the Mid Canterbury/South Canterbury/Ellesmere competition where they went through unbeaten and beat Prebbleton in the final, and on Saturday they took on Southern in the local under-18

competition’s final and won 35-19 to take home the under-18 Rudstone Cup and Kevin Dwyer Memorial Trophy.

That win took their unbeaten streak this season to 14 games.

Donaldson said she’d been involved with the team for a number of years now and to take out both titles this season was a big deal.

“I’ve actually been managing the team for four years now – two years as under-16s and two years as under-18s – and there’s a few boys that I have actually been manager of right from the first year,” Donaldson said.

She said she believed that for the past five years Celtic had made the under-18 final, but they

had come second on each occasion, until this year.

“Even in the under-16s, both years, we were in the final but we were pipped at the post at the last minute,” Donaldson said.

Donaldson’s son Connor was the team’s captain, while her older son Brentton was the side’s coach along with Mati Morrison.

O’Gara weighs in on Barrett v Mo’unga Crusaders assistant coach and Irish great Ronan O’Gara has provided a possible answer to the All Blacks number 10 debate – play both Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett at the same time.

The former Irish first-five, who played 128 tests for his country, shared his experiences coaching the Super Rugby champions to a repeat title in a column for the Irish Examiner.

In the piece O’Gara says why

Mo’unga deserves game time in the Rugby Championship and one option would be to move Barrett to fullback.

“He plays on instinct which is brilliant. He doesn’t need a whole series of structured plays to excite him. He has that availability but he plays off the cuff, which is thrilling to see,” O’Gara wrote.

“He’s gone up against Beauden Barrett a few times now and got the better of him this season, even

if one always look better as a 10 when your team is on the front foot, as the Crusaders have invariably been this campaign.

“The All Blacks pick on All Black form, and Barrett has been very good for New Zealand, let’s not mistake that either.

“But Mo’unga’s form deserves game time, and it will be interesting, going forward, to see whether that’s coming on for Barrett or the ‘Canes’ pivot shifting to 15 and

Mo’unga starting as 10.”

O’Gara has signed on for another season with the Crusaders after joining the side having served as an assistant at French Top 14 team, Racing 92.

He provided an insight into what makes the Crusaders so successful following his first season with the franchise.

O’Gara said the Irishness in him meant he’s naturally “fraught and anxious” ahead of big games but

the positive attitude in the Crusaders camp, led by coach Scott Robertson, was a calming influence.

“These eight months that have changed me as a person every bit as much as developing my coaching skillset.

“It’s a big thing to say, but operating in the Crusader environment has entirely altered my thought process as an individual,” O’Gara wrote.
