Environment Canterbury is reviewing its pest management programme near the Ashburton River after a dog was killed in one of its traps over the weekend. The dog, a 12-month-old miniature foxy-chihuahua cross, was due to have puppies in about six weeks, its owner, Temuka dog breeder Mark, who asked for his surname not to be used, said. ECan’s Ashburton zone manager, Janine Holland, said she had personally been in touch with Mark and his wife to express the council’s condolences and to reassure them that action was being taken over the dog’s death. “We want to make sure other dog
owners don’t have to deal with such an awful situation,” Holland said. The traps target possums, hedgehogs, stoats, ferrets, weasels and feral cats that prey on nesting birds in the riverbed, she said, adding that the programme had been running successfully since 2003 without incident. However, it was not acceptable that even one pet was caught in a trap, she said. “That’s why we’re taking urgent steps to make sure this can’t happen again. A full review process is under way to make sure there are no gaps.” New signs are being erected to show where the traps are and the traps themselves have been decommissioned while the review takes place, she said.

The area around the traps has been sprayed to increase visibility, while the size of the trap openings is also being reviewed. “This was a terrible situation for everyone involved,” Holland said. “We’re working with the owners and doing everything we can to prevent any possibility of a repeat.” The area is an important one for nationally endangered black fronted tern, nationally critical black-billed gull and nationally vulnerable wrybill, she said.
