Mid Canterbury primary and secondary schools were busy yesterday forging educational links that could lead to increased business for the district. A delegation from Xichang agricultural college in China was in town visiting schools, farms and agribusinesses. The three-day trip was organised by Canterbury’s Ara Institute, building on a relationship started by Xichang and the Aoraki Polytech last year. Ara is keen to increase the number of international students in its regional facilities. The institute’s international director Beth Knowles said Xichang college was a learning centre in an agricultural area similar to Mid and South Canterbury. The visiting educators were involved in agricultural and horticultural
research in their region and were keen to see both schools and working farms. They visited Randal Hanrahan’s cropping farm just outside Ashburton, Midland Seeds’ oil extraction and Manuka honey operations and Paul and Kay Gardner’s Mayfield sheep breeding farm. They visited a robotic dairy farm and McCain’s vegetable processing plant in Timaru. Their day started yesterday at Ashburton Borough School, where they were welcomed by the school’s kapa haka group; they also experienced the school’s modern learning environment. Principal Sam Winterbourn said the school was internationally accredited and had an increasingly multi-national roll. Mt Hutt College, which has 23 in-
ternational students, and Ashburton College, which has 20 international students, also outlined student life at their respective campuses, highlighting academic as well as agricultural learning opportunities outside the classroom. Ashburton College international director Michelle Hosking said the college had four Chinese students who were enjoying studying and interacting with their fellow Kiwi students. “We are learning a lot from having them in our school.” The college had 200 students from other countries on its roll and the number was increasing annually.
