Old schoolmates gather for reunion About 50 former students at Ashburton High School gathered for their annual reunion lunch yesterday.

The high school became Ashburton College in 1965 after merging with Hakatere College and former pupils have had regular get-togethers over the years.

Organiser Margaret Bean said the 50 had plenty to chat about, over a meal catered by students in the current college’s staffroom. The classics students are fundraising for a school trip to Greece next year.

Bean said the modern campus was an excellent venue for the former school-mates, who came mostly from the Mid Canterbury area.

She said it was a bonus having the youngsters around and the old pupils were happy to support their fundraising cause.

It may not have been great school holiday weather over the past two weeks, but overcast skies did little to dampen the spirits of children enrolled in a Methven school holiday programme.

Organised by Sue Duff, operator of Childcare@Sue’s more than 200 participants enjoyed a fun-filled programme at the Methven Kids Fest.

“I try to put together a diverse programme to cater for parents who work here or are unable to travel to get school holiday care,” Duff said.

The holiday programme kicked off on Monday with Lego building under the tutelage of House of Bricks, and cardmaking.

On Tuesday participants visited Hannah Kidd, a local sculptural artist before

heading off to the Methven children’s garden where they crafted a sculpture of their own.

“It was fantastic and gave us a new outlook on sculpture,” Duff said.

Greta Solly conducted a musical theatre workshop on Wednesday, culminating in a concert in the afternoon.

Concrete garden art was on the programme on Thursday, along with an educational session from local beekeepers.

Yesterday was all about robotics with the team from Science Alive on board to assist, and a cupcake workshop run under the direction of Natasha Rhodes from Sugar Rush.

The 12 participants decorated three cupcakes during the session.

“They did an owl, a very small cupcake and one with a Halloween theme,” Rhodes said.

Tobacco smash and grab at Rakaia Four Square

A tobacco robbery from a Rakaia business is concerning, Rakaia-based police constable Aaron Tapp says.

Thieves hit the Four Square supermarket on Railway Terrace at 4.18am on Wednesday morning, arriving at the scene in a black Nissan Navara flatdeck ute, reported stolen from Ashburton.

Using a jemmy bar to force the door, the men were in the store for less than a minute.

“They were focused solely on cigarettes,” Tapp said.

“They made their way straight to the tobacco cabinet which they also broke into using the jemmy bar.”

Making off with tailor made cigarettes, a quantity of tobacco and blue ZigZag rolling papers, the men headed north,

crossing the Rakaia Bridge before turning right on to Rakaia Road, where the vehicle was abandoned.

Tapp said the offenders were wearing very distinctive clothing and carrying a distinctive bag.

It was the first tobacco-focused smash and grab in the Ashburton District, however a number of Christchurch businesses have been hit in recent weeks.

“It’s a worrying trend,” Tapp said.

The owners of the business were alerted to the break-in when the alarm went off.

Police have images captured from security cameras.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ashburton Police Station or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Family Start funding confirmed

Presbyterian Support South Canterbury has received the tick of approval to run the Family Start service in Ashburton, CEO Michael Parker announced yesterday.

The Ministry of Social Development Family Start service will replace the Parents as First Teachers programme, previously operated in Mid Canterbury.

Family Works will provide the service to clients across the Timaru, Ashburton, Mackenzie and Waimate areas, with staff

based in both Timaru and Ashburton, Mr Parker said in a note.

“Providing the new service will mean approximately four additional staff for the Family Works South Canterbury team, and recruitment will be under way immediately.”

The expansion of Family Start supports MSD’s Community Investment Strategy, which aims to align funding for those with the highest needs to evidencebased and results-focused social services.

“We’re delighted to be able to deliver this essential and target-

ed service for families/whanau in our community,” Family Works manager, Liz Nolan said.

“Family Start will help build stronger families through ongoing support through a child’s early years.

“Working alongside families in South and Mid Canterbury, our Family Start team will help parents in our community do a great job by focusing on each child’s health, growth, education and safety, from birth onwards.”

After weeks of waiting, Presbyterian Support Ashburton

regional manager Jackie Girvan was relieved. “I am delighted that Family Start is coming to Ashburton and that we will be hosting one of the Presbyterian Support South Canterbury Family Works staff at The Trevor Wilson Centre here to cover the Ashburton District,” she said.

The Family Start service has been successfully delivered by two other Family Works regions for several years already and the South Canterbury team would be able to draw on this valuable knowledge and experience, she said.

Changes could derail policy

Ashburton’s Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) has been so long in the making it could be up for review before it is signed off.

The policy was developed in response to a Government request that local authorities formulate a liquor policy that would meet the needs of their communities.

Those who elected not to do this would have their licensing hours become set by the government as a default.

Since 2013 the Ashburton District Council has invested thousands of dollars and hours of staff time working with the community to develop a plan that met the community’s requirements.

Through a consultation process it came up with a plan that would see off-licence businesses only able to trade until 9pm at night and where all bars and clubs would be subject to a oneway door policy after 1am. That would mean no one could enter a bar between 1am and closing at 2am.

Strong objections from rural hotels saw the one-way door policy amended to apply to urban bars only. The plan was then open for appeals and two organisations requested a change to off-licence hours to 9.30pm. The council agreed.

It was then hoped the LAP could be signed off and implemented, environmental services

group manager Jane Donaldson said, but the region’s medical officer of health was not happy with the new off-licence hours.

That meant the policy would have to go to another hearing but a backlog of cases meant the hearing date was set down for the end of 2017, one year short of the policy’s review date.

“The question the council now needs to ask itself, is should it just pull out of it?” Donaldson said.

The issue of hours comes down to what is reasonable and what is not.

“The court can direct the council to go back and reconsider its decision but it can’t rule that the council’s decision is unreasonable,” she said.

The council is in the process of working with the medical officer of health in an attempt to reach agreement so the LAP can be publicly notified. Once notified there would still be a several month lead in to allow hospitality businesses to prepare for the oneway door policy’s implementation.

Donaldson believes there are now a number of local authorities who have pulled out of the LAP process because it was too difficult to resolve.

If a council opted out, its licensing hours would revert to the government fall back, 7am to 11pm for off-licences and 4am closing for bars, hours the community had made it clear it did not want.

Staring down angry bulls part of the job Bull fighter Sam Greenwood is used to staring down 800kg of angry bull.

It’s a dangerous and unpaid hobby that will bring him to the Methven Rodeo on October 23.

He will be one of three bull fighters helping keep the bull riders safe after their seconds of glory in the ring.

With over 310 competitors entered in events across the day, Greenwood is going to be busy.

The 27-year-old was introduced to rodeo when he was a teenager by North Canterbury’s Jamison family, who excel at the sport. He has ridden his fair share of raging bulls and suffered broken bones and dislocated joints.

He now looks forward to the rodeo season as a bull fighter, though that comes with a few kicks and high-adrenaline moments too. The bull fighters work as a team to distract the bull when the rider falls or jumps off.

“We take the bull’s attention away from the rider so they can get to safety without getting run over. We put ourselves between the rider and the bull.”

Greenwood says five bull rides would leave him exhausted, but as a bull fighter he could be in the ring for 60 rides or more.

In brief Man hunt Police in Auckland are hunting a man for breaching prison release conditions. Daniel Kipa, 31, is considered dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public, police warned. “Kipa is believed to be in the Panmure/ Glen Innes area and is thought to be actively evading police. “He is wanted to arrest for breaching his prison release conditions,” a statement said. “Anyone who sees Daniel Kipa or knows where he is should call 111 immediately.”

Kipa has a distinctive tattoo on the right side of his neck, with the letters F-U-K. He also has a tattoo of a tear drop near left eye.

Appeal adjourned The man found guilty of murdering Connor Morris with a sickle during a violent west Auckland street brawl has had an appeal against his conviction adjourned.

In September last year Michael Thrift Murray was found guilty of murdering Morris and jailed for life with a minimum nonparole period of 10 years. After sentencing Murray filed an appeal against his conviction. A Court of Appeal hearing was scheduled to go ahead yesterday, but was adjourned. The reason for the adjournment was not given, but a court spokesperson said a new date was yet to be finalised.

The rodeo season starts Labour weekend with Winchester and Methven and continues until March. Greenwood will spend his spare time on the circuit with

the tight-knit rodeo family.

He is looking forward to Methven. “It is one of the most exciting rodeos because of the big crowd.

A trio of tourists who went for a walk up to Kings Park, in the hills behind Greymouth, to view the sunset on Thursday evening, became lost and had to call the police to help them down. West Coast police prevention manager, Senior Sergeant Vicki Walker, said the three women went for a stroll up the walkway hoping to take in the sunset. Unfortunately, they “went a little bit far” and couldn’t find their way back. The police went to their assistance about 8.30pm to 9pm after the women phoned to say they were out of their depth. Ms Walker said it served as a reminder for walkers to inform someone, and to ensure they knew their route before setting out. “It’s one of those things that started off really well.”

Chasing the classics in their original environments Twelve students from Ashburton College and two teachers will be off on the trip of a lifetime next year to Greece and Italy.

The three-week tour will be in tandem with Hillmorton High School, which has run tours in the past and will involve students who study classics in Years 12 and 13.

Teacher in charge of classics Greta Hampton will be accompanied by English teacher Michael Clark as leaders of the tour, which will leave New Zealand in September and include the school holidays.

Hampton said it was an exciting first tour for Ashburton College and she said the students would be soaking up the culture in Athens, Rome and Venice. They would be experiencing first-hand the places they had been studying.

The group has already started fundraising and will be looking for opportunities to raise money over the next 12 months.

Gardeners urged to be wary

Those with a green thumb might want to take extra care this month as the Legionnaires’ disease season is making its return.

Dr Ramon Pink, Canterbury medical officer of health said the seasonal outbreak is linked to gardeners catching the disease from potting mix of compost.

“In October every year the number of people with Legionnaires’ disease begins to climb, numbers peak in November and December, remain relatively high through January and February, and then taper

off in March. “After a long winter it’s great getting back into the garden and enjoying the warmer weather and longer days, but please make sure you avoid inhaling the dust from potting mix or compost as this can be dangerous,” Dr Pink said.

He said you can catch the disease, which is a form of pneumonia, by inhaling airborne droplets or particles that contain the Legionella bacteria.

Symptoms normally include coughing, high fever, chills, shortness of breath, chest pains, headaches, nausea, abdominal pain and

excessive sweating.

Dr Pink said anyone who experiences these symptoms should see their general practice team immediately and also let them know if they have been handling potting mix or compost.

“The illness may be mild but can sometimes be fatal, it is more common in older people, particularly if they smoke, have poor immunity or a chronic illness,” he said.

Since September last year there have been 36 cases of Legionnaires in Canterbury and for September 2016 alone there were four recorded cases.

Arrest in $8m drug bust A 26-year-old Canadian man has been arrested at Auckland International Airport and charged in relation to the importation of $8 million worth of P. The man, who had been living in Auckland, was stopped trying to leave the country yesterday after Customs searched a package, declared as an ornate footstool, with 8kg of methamphetamine hidden inside.

The parcel was originally sent from the United States and weighed around 50kg.

Inside, officers at the Air Cargo Inspections Facility discovered what appeared to be a fibreglass and concrete block with a few decorative mirrors and beads attached to each surface.

When deconstructed, 18 plastic bags filled with a crystalline

substance were found inside.

Testing showed a positive indication for methamphetamine.

Manager Investigations Maurice O’Brien said the seizure and arrest showed Customs intelligence, response capability, and partnerships are working well.

“This is an excellent result for everyone involved which included Customs officers with support from the logistics in-

dustry and concerned members of the public.

“Collectively they have stopped a large quantity of meth from harming New Zealanders and identified a person allegedly responsible,” O’Brien said.

The man has been charged with importing a class A drug and is yet to appear in court.

In brief Knighthood on the line Sir Ngatata Love could be stripped of his knighthood after being sentenced to jail for obtaining property by deception. Love was sentenced to two years and six months’ imprisonment for the crime yesterday. Prime Minister John Key will now be tasked with deciding whether Love should retain his knighthood. A spokeswoman for Key said the Prime Minister would not comment on the case until the window for an appeal had closed. “It would not be appropriate for the Prime Minister to comment at this stage,” the spokeswoman said.

Horror end to holidays Three people have died on New Zealand roads in what has been a horror end to the school holidays.

Several crashes occurred around the country yesterday, killing three people and injuring at least five.

A crash between a car and a truck on State Highway 1 killed a man and woman in the car. The truck driver was in a moderate condition in Tokoroa Hospital. Another person died in a two-car crash on the lower Kaimais near Tauranga yesterday afternoon. Two people were injured – one seriously and the other moderately. Meanwhile two people have been injured in a serious crash near Paekakariki.

Two cars collided outside the Fisherman’s Table on SH1 north of Wellington and closed off the road for several hours.

Barry, Collins respond to Smith’s apology Broadcaster Hilary Barry and Government minister Judith Collins have responded to All Black Aaron Smith’s tearful apology over his airport sex scandal.

Smith said he’d made a huge mistake and apologised to his partner, her family, his own family, his team and to fans.

Following a clip of the apology on Breakfast yesterday morning, host Barry said nobody wanted to see an All Black cry.

Co-host Jack Tame said everyone could agree the NZRU and the All Blacks had handled the situation well by front-footing it as quickly as possible on Thursday.

“By the weekend hopefully it will all be over and everyone can move on,” said Barry.

Collins told the Paul Henry Show the mother in her felt a bit sorry for the world’s best halfback.

“He shouldn’t have done this. This was not good, but I don’t like seeing grown men basically forced into crying on TV so that we can all forgive them.”

She said the situation wasn’t her business.

Labour MP Phil Twyford said he agreed. Smith had a lapse of judgment, he said.

Giant garage sale a classic idea In ancient Rome the emperor would hike taxes for overseas campaigns, but in modern-day Whangarei a group of students have organised a giant garage sale to fund their own trip to visit Europe to learn about ancient civilisations.

Kiwi face transplant surgeon Simon Talbot has led his team in transplanting two donor arms to a retired marine who lost all four limbs in Afghanistan.

Dr Talbot, a 39-year-old reconstructive plastic surgeon, runs a hand transplant programme at Briham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he has also participated in seven full and partial face transplants.

He and his team have done four bilateral hand transplants, so were “amassing a reasonable experience now” in that area.

Their recent surgery, which was “one of the more difficult ones” was on 31-year-old Sergeant John Peck, who plans to use his new arms to fulfil a lifelong dream of becoming a celebrity chef, CBS Boston reported.

Dr Talbot expected Peck’s recovery to take nine to 12 months.

“On one side his amputation was above the elbow, on the other side it was below the elbow,” he told the Herald.

“Because of the degree of the blast injury he had, followed by a really serious infection on the left side, it was all a bit more complicated than previous ones.

“Over the last three of our

The surgery took about 14 hours.

“In the past we’ve taken between about eight and 16 hours for each of these cases, so this was at the longer end,” Dr Talbot said.

He said there are about 1600 veterans in the US with extremity injuries and amputations from the war in the Middle East.

There was “a lot of oppor-

tunity for things we can do to make a difference”.

Peck’s new arms were “already clearly alive and working”.

“He’s got muscles in his forearms, that are already working to move his fingers.

“Around the world there have been about 50 patients who’ve had hand transplants. About half of those have been bilateral. Only six or seven have had these included above the elbow.”

He said an operation like Peck’s was “pretty rare”. – NZME

Alister Lilley’s amazing journey with the Ashburton Trust W

hen Alister Lilley was first elected to the Ashburton Trust it was a thriving business, one that held a monopoly over liquor sales on its patch; 21 years later he’s leaving a vastly different organisation.

“Back then the trust was very profitable and it was a huge contributor to the community by way of grants. It was a large employer and the community benefited greatly,” he said.

Alister believes the defining moment in the trust’s history was when, through a community poll, it lost its monopoly on liquor sales. Almost overnight it was forced to reshape itself so it could compete in a market that it once called its own.

“The public had spoken but we could never compete with the corporate buying power of the supermarkets and that meant our beer and wine sales were hugely affected, but that’s the way it is in a competitive market.”

Alister did not seek re-election in 2004 because of business commitments but put his hat back in the ring in 2007, was re-elected and served a further nine years.

And that meant he missed the challenging term that came postderegulation.

“I was away when the board of the time, with the best of intentions, went through a period of expansion. They established Hades Pizza, the Tinwald Motels, opened the Shed, Speight’s [Alehouse] and Braided Rivers, and built Somerset House.”

When he was re-elected in 2007 it was to a board that had a hell of a lot of balls in the air at one time, Alister said.

It was also at the time of the world financial crisis. The trust was under pressure in the market and in the early stages of feeling financial pressure.

“In that open market we were under bank pressure and our trading business wasn’t profitable.”

During that time the trust had several changes of chief executive, culminating in the chief executive of the day, the financial controller and board chairman all resigning virtually on the same day.

And that left Alister to take over the chairman’s job and to unravel the mess left behind by the two departing staff members and several businesses that were failing to perform.

“There was a hell of a lot going on and my first steps when I took over the chair was to meet with the bank and try to negotiate a way forward.”

That negotiation involved appointing a bank representative to the board table and being part of the management team meant the bank was able to gain confidence that there was a way forward.

The 2010 and 2011 earthquakes provided a temporary business boom, but the greenfield businesses were still providing trading challenges, Alister said and those

challenges called for some significant changes.

With the rules changing around charitable agencies, the trust needed to change its own charitable foundation to become part of the Lion Foundation.

“What we negotiated with that is a perfect model. They look after the back office and do the paperwork and the community does the front office, makes the decisions about where the money goes. That’s a marvellous arrangement and it works very well.”

The Lion Foundation deal, however, didn’t solve the trust’s trading woes and the increasing minefield of new health and safety legislation, the impact of new drink driving legislation, compliance costs and the basic costs that came with being a trust.

“I said to the board one day, ‘there has to be another way of

serving our community, another way of doing this’. We wanted to keep the establishments for the community and we wanted to keep making a return to the community, but we knew if we didn’t change, the money would simply run out.”

And the discussions that flowed from that resulted in the trust’s new business model, where it has sold almost all of its businesses, and retained ownership of the land and buildings.

“Simply, licensing trusts in a deregulated area don’t work.

What we’ve got now is a bloody good model for the future and it’s protected our assets for the community.”

But the changes are unlikely to stop there, he said.

“Over the next three years I believe the ALT will become a community trust, not a licens-

ing trust and over time I can see it become a component in some form of Advance Ashburton. It’s important community assets are ring-fenced and protected for the community long term.”

At one time these could have been put under the council’s guardianship, but that might not be the safest option in the future as the Ashburton District Council could easily be swallowed up as part of a larger governance body, Alister said.

“These assets we have in community ownership need to be ring-fenced into a mechanism that can’t be swallowed up by a large regional entity.”

The significance and value of the trust’s charitable arm means about $1 million is given back to the community each year and that’s been more than $20 million during Alister’s time around the

board table.

While there had been some tough times and hard battles to fight over the past 21 years, there were many, many highlights, Alister said.

He counts those in large community projects that have significant trust funding – The Ashburton Trust Event Centre, EA Networks Centre, the tennis centre, hockey turf and aviation museum to name just a few.

‘There’s very little the trust hasn’t touched in this town. It would be much poorer if the trust hadn’t been here over the past 60 or so years and that’s why it’s important community donations continue and to do that, we’ve had to change our model.”

Among the organisations the trust has been involved with, there are three that have always had Alister’s passionate support – Women’s Refuge, Plunket car seats and the district’s Multicultural Bite festival.

“Over those years I’ve worked with some very interesting and very savvy businesspeople. Will I miss it? Everything is right for a time. I’ve done my time and I’ve been through a period of a stable, strong trust that was well managed and through a period of reinvention.

“The world’s changed so much, our population base in Mid Canterbury has changed so much and as a trust we’ve had to look at ourselves and say, is our model still relevant? The figures didn’t lie and we had to make the ALT into something that was right and fit for the future.”

If there was a perfect time to retire from the board it was when the new model was virtually in place, with Speight’s Alehouse, the Somerset Grocer and the Hotel Ashburton sold and good prospects for a sale of the Tinwald Tavern complex, Alister said.

His business will see more of him and he hopes he can become involved as a volunteer mentor to young businesspeople.

“That’s something I really want to do, help the next generation of young businesspeople; everyone needs an opportunity and a bit of guidance.

“It’s been an amazing journey and I believe as a board, we’ve restructured the trust for the future.

We’ve taken a long-term view and part of that is looking at whether Advance Ashburton is the future to guarantee the protection of the community’s assets.”

The trust has retained ownership of the Devon Tavern, business and buildings, but Alister’s belief is that in the future the tavern and the RSA should become one. Yet one more change in the trust’s evolving future.

Calling time after six terms on trust W

hen Alan Neumann was elected to the Ashburton Trust’s board, his intention was to serve two, at most, three terms.

Somehow the years ticked by and now, 18 years (six terms) later, Alan has decided it’s finally time to retire. When the results of the local body election results are announced today, he says he’ll be interested in the outcome, but it will no longer have such a high importance rating.

“When I thought about standing, I wanted to do something like this but I wasn’t really interested in roads, sewage and council work. This was more my kind of thing and back then we had night meetings so it fitted in well with my businesses,” he said.

Over the past few elections, Alan thought about retiring, but each election the trust found itself either settling in or about to employ a new chief executive or a long-serving board member was

“I thought a couple of times we were going to end up a bit light on experience, so I ended up standing again.”

Alan admits the last term round the board table has brought plenty of challenges as the trust reshaped itself and sold off its businesses. Those changes weren’t necessarily changes he agreed with. It was an emotional decision for him.

“I was pretty disappointed when we decided to do that and I didn’t support it, but I guess one good thing is that we still own the buildings,” he said.

Over his years around the board table, the trust has been through some lean times and at one point he suggested board members didn’t pick up their pay

for the year. They agreed – reluctantly, Alan said.

He was a member of the trust when it lost its liquor monopoly, but he believes that wasn’t a bad thing.

“Personally I wasn’t too upset about it; I believed it would pull us into the 21st century. It was great to have a monopoly, but it can stifle development.”

Alan has worked with four chief executives and each was probably the right man for the right time, he said.

“Gordon Wilson spent the money, no doubt about it but he did some good things. He had big city ideas for a small town, but it was what was needed at that time.”

One thing Alan was disappointed not to see proceed were plans for hotel/apartment style accom-

modation in the Baring Square county council building.

“The brakes were put on and we didn’t get a hotel. We lost an opportunity. Now someone else will build them,” Alan said.

With its new focus as a landlord only, the trust board would have less work to do. It has already gone from a head office with many staff to become a minioperation. Alan believes numbers will drop even further.

He doesn’t want the trust to sit still; would be happy to see it invest in more real estate and doesn’t rule out it owning businesses in the future either.

He’d like to see the Devon Hotel replaced with a new hotel and would be keen to see a sports bar and TAB somewhere on the Somerset House ground floor.

He might be leaving, but Alan says he’s still passionate about the trust and its businesses.

For him, no longer being part of the trust will mean more time to devote to his greatest passion, horseracing and following his team of 10-plus around Australasia. There will be more time to spend at the Akaroa bach and it will mean the toughest call of all – letting the next generation take over the business he’s worked in for 44 years with brother Ian, the one his father founded.

He’s put in more years than he intended, and suggests that three terms is more than enough for any board member. It’s important to have experience around the table, but it’s also important to have new faces and new blood, he said.

ABs ‘prepared for emergencies’

By Patrick Mckendry Damian McKenzie has been training at halfback in case the All Blacks lose specialists TJ Perenara or Tawera Kerr-Barlow before their test against the Springboks in Durban tomorrow morning.

Lima Sopoaga is another option as the All Blacks cover for the loss of Aaron Smith, who has returned to New Zealand to face his wellpublicised misconduct hearing.

Coach Steve Hansen said it was

unlikely another halfback would be brought over to South Africa in the event of an injury to either of their specialists, and that the side always prepared for emergencies.

“We’ve been training another halfback in the squad,” Hansen said.

“There’s two scenarios. Obviously if we lose one at training we could possibly bring one over really late but if not we would bring Damian in at halfback.

“He trained there this morning

when we did a clarity run.

“If we lost both halfbacks as we have done at the past when we used Sladey [Colin Slade] a few years ago over here, then Lima will go there.

“It’s like most things, we try to plan for most what-ifs that occur.

We don’t always do we get them all covered but we’re usually not too far away.

“Halfback is a specialist position so you have to have someone in your group that can jump in

there if you lose both of them in a game.”

Asked if the ability to play an extra position could be an added strength for McKenzie, who can play first-five and fullback, Hansen said: “I’d like to see him play No10 before he starts playing No9.

“If we get that part of it right then he might play him at No9.

“He’d play anywhere that kid.”

The Chiefs 21-year-old, who weighs about 85kg, has the body shape and pace off the mark to

slot into halfback without too many problems.

He has not been included in the match-day squad, but would enter it should starting halfback Perenara be unavailable.

Specialist first-five Sopoaga is on the reserves bench as cover for Beauden Barrett.

Hansen said most scenarios were covered at training, including having halfbacks throw the ball into the lineout in the event the hooker was sent off. - NZME

In brief Tournament report Basketball Mid Canterbury teams have been in action over the past four days at Basketball New Zealand’s southern regional under 13 tournament in Christchurch.

Two boys’ teams and a girls’ team have been battling against teams from all over the South Island for top spots at the age-group competition. The girls were playing yesterday for a spot in the B grade final, while the boys’ A team was playing Canterbury White today for fifth place in the A grade. Netball back with a bang

The Mid Canterbury Summer Netball League began with a bang at the EA Networks Centre Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Netball’s popularity has risen again in the district with the summer competition returning

with 32 teams, eight more than last season.

In the Business House League, Tavendale and Partners proved too good on the night for a 1611 win over RMF and Stepping Stones dealt Talley’s Cool Chips a 43-6 hiding.

In the division’s other fixtures,

High Raters snuck by the Property Gurus 18-16 while EA Networks saw off The Fly Hunnys 22-15.

The Social Skilled Grade also offered up some entertaining encounters.

One Hundred Per Cent fell to S & Giggles 35-15 while Cunning

Stunts downed Gin and Tonic 217.

Splash ‘n’ Buckets proved too good for Balls Up 26-19, Bench Warmers took a comfortable win over Rakahe 26-15, Dodgy Knees toppled Salty Geraldine Lips 23-15 and Battle Dogs beat Te Tahi 19-12.

Wood looking forward to Mexican clash He’s scored seven goals in his past 13 games for Leeds United and All Whites striker Chris Wood is hoping to take that hot form onto the international stage when the team meets Mexico today.

The 24-year-old from Auckland, who has scored 18 goals in his 42 internationals for New Zealand, has been a standout in training this week and is looking forward to testing himself against the World No 15 in Nashville.

“I am enjoying my football at the moment,” said Wood, who debuted for New Zealand back in 2009.

“The team [Leeds United] is doing well which is the main thing. We are ticking along nicely and I hope I can bring that form into these games as well.”

The All Whites have played Mexico four times in the past five years and know they are in for a huge challenge.

“When asked what he had learned in the recent fixtures against them Wood said: “That they are good,” with a laugh.

“They are a good side.

“They move the ball well. They have some great players and we know that we will have to be at the top of our game to do well but I know we will be.”

Wood has been impressed by the accuracy and intent and training this week.

He said the days spent on the training pitch this week have been invaluable.

“It is the first time we have had everyone together for a while so it has been great. We have got a good bunch of guys together now and hopefully we can showcase what we can do.”

Wood loves nothing more than playing for New Zealand and scoring goals at the highest level.

He said everyone in the squad is up for the challenge to gauge where they stand in world football.

“These are the games that we want and these are the games that we need if we are going to progress as a nation,” he said.

“If we don’t get games like this we won’t progress. We look forward to the challenge.”

Wood said the All Whites have a “huge 18 months to two years” coming up as they try to qualify for a third FIFA World Cup in 2018. He is excited about the potential of this group.

“We have a great team with a lot of youth and experience.

“It is the most talent we have had in a squad for a long time.

“I am excited to see what we can do.”

Saudis ‘time wasters’ Socceroos defender Trent Sainsbury has lashed out at time-wasting tactics from Saudi Arabia after a heated World Cup qualifier in which coaches on both sides lost their cool. Australia had to settle with a 2-2 draw in Jeddah yesterday, but the match threatened to boil over in the second half as Saudi players started succumbing in the tough 30°C heat and humidity.

“Then they’re going down with cramp when they’re leading onenil. Surviving the run from hell

Super Black ‘daring to dream’

W

ell, hell and I came face to face with my 11km run last weekend.

What torture!

Why? I am not sure, but since then I have been trying to understand why …

First possible mistake – I went for my run at around 5pm on Sunday.

As I prefer to run when it is cloudy and when the weather is cool, I waited for the sun to go down to exercise.

I should probably have run in the morning when I woke up as I reckon I am more energised then (if I can get up!)

Are you a morning person like me?

I’m glad the big race starts at 8am!

Second certain mistake – I didn’t eat well at all last week.

Home after 9-10pm every night, the last thing I wanted to do was cook, so I lived on cheese on toast (you know how French people are with their cheese and bread) and processed food for a week.

So, terribly bad!

I don’t think I realised – until that run – how the way I eat could affect my running so much.

Nutritious food is key and I

just got a big reminder of that.

This week I have gone back to eating well like I had since the start of my training and I hope that the damage of not eating well last week, won’t affect me for too much longer.

If you have any good tips on good food for runners, please let me know.

First definite reason – Exhaustion.

At the end of last week, I felt like a ghost!

My body and brain were completely drained.

Trying to catch up on some sleep at the weekend wasn’t enough and from the first few metres into the run, it felt like I had already run 10km!

My legs were heavy and I couldn’t lift them properly, my body wouldn’t keep a good posture and my mind was telling me “stop now, you can’t do it”.

I kept going for the whole 11km despite my feet hurting (I nearly got blisters there), my hips hurting at times and a very sore front right knee for the last kilometre or so.

I talked to my trainer Chris about my knee, which was a big concern for me, and I realised that the reason it was hurting

was probably the fact that I was landing on the back of my foot again instead of the front of it.

My tiredness prevented me from running properly as my only focus was to not quit.

I definitely need to take care of myself if I want to succeed with this half marathon challenge!

Second definite reason – I had an encounter with a dog that brought back a bad memory.

A few years ago I ran past a dog walking alongside its owner without a leash. I kept running, however, very slowly, passing them carefully and she said to me “don’t worry, my dog is lovely”.

I kept running and after a few kilometres, I turned around and met them again.

Feeling reassured by what she had said, I ran past them again without slowing down, without worrying about the dog and all of a sudden, I felt a sharp pain in my derriere!

The dog had run after me and bit me right on my butt (the dog

obviously felt like having some French toast that day!)

The owner apologised, and was confused with what had just happened. And I was furious thinking that her dog wasn’t that lovely after all!

I walked home, in pain and in shock and finished at the doctor’s with a tetanus injection and some bandages.

Working for a week sitting on one part of your bottom isn’t pleasant or easy, I can tell you that much!

This time around, when I saw the dog running after me, I slowed right down and I shouted “No, go home” twice and the dog went back to the property.

Happy days!

So I have a favour to ask you: if you are walking with your dog not on a leash and see a runner, please hold your dog for a few minutes while the runner passes you.

You never know what could happen …

I guess some of you have had the same kind of terrible run where everything is going wrong.

This run made me not want to run again, but I told myself that it can’t always be a good run, can it?

You have to take the good runs with the bad ones, and keep going, keep going, keep going.

PS: The dog was really pleased with himself.

Bathurst record set to fall in qualifying Defending Supercars series champion Mark Winterbottom believes a new lap record will be set in Bathurst 1000 qualifying after another scorching practice session yesterday.

And four-time race champion Jamie Whincup appears the man most likely to eclipse his own Mount Panorama mark after again dominating.

Holden’s Whincup topped the timesheets in the fifth and final practice session before yesterday’s qualifying, clocking 2min 05.14 secs.

It was just 0.24 shy of Whincup’s lap record set in the corresponding practice session last year.

Whincup (2:04.90) is the only Supercars driver to shatter the 2.04 barrier on the mountain.

But Winterbottom believed that would change after qualifying. “I think we will need fours (two minute, 04 seconds) to get provisional pole,” he said.

Former Bathurst champion Winterbottom was second fastest ahead of fellow Ford driver Chaz Mostert in the final practice session.

Meanwhile, Whincup’s recordbreaking Holden team have been upstaged at Bathurst 1000 practice by a young driver with a surname which bears a close resemblance to one of the all-time greats of Australian motorsport.

Ford’s rising star Jack Le Brocq

did his best Peter Brock impersonation by shocking the field and topping the timesheets in 2min 05.9547 seconds in the codrivers-only session.

Fabian Coulthard’s Ford teammate Luke Youlden was second fastest ahead of Whincup’s codriver Paul Dumbrell.

Le Brocq cops plenty of ribbing about his name at Mount Panorama, with the running joke that he is Brock’s French cousin.

This weekend’s Bathurst 1000 will honour the 10th anniversary of record nine-time Mount Panorama champion Brock’s death.

“It is a pretty cool feeling,” 24-year-old Le Brocq said of his practice effort. “I am still trying to learn the car and work it out, I still have a bit of work to do.”

Le Brocq is stepping up from the Dunlop Series and forms the youngest driving combination at this year’s Bathurst 1000 with 22-year-old Cam Waters.

He is yet to secure a full-time Supercars drive next season but did his chances no harm by turning heads yesterday.

“That is not luck, that is great driving,” six-time Bathurst winner Mark Skaife said.

By Dale BuDge They are rank outsiders but Super Black Racing Kiwi combination of Chris Pither and Richie Stanaway is daring to dream of Bathurst glory.

Pither shocked the Supercars field when he put his Ford on pole position for a sprint race at Queensland Raceway back in June while Stanaway was the talk of the Sandown 500 with a masterful drive in treacherous conditions during his category debut.

Despite those performances few people are tipping the Kiwi outfit to be a serious contender at the Great Race tomorrow but Pither knows stranger things have happened.

“With this race anything is possible,” he said.

“You have got to aim high. We have had glimpses throughout the year where we have been really competitive.

“It is just a combination of getting everything right – the race car, the qualifying car, the strategy and a whole lot of other things too.

“We’ll definitely be aiming at the top – anything is possible.”

While Pither has been tasked with learning most of the tracks on the Supercars calendar in his debut season Bathurst is an exception to that rule.

The 29-year-old New Zealander has competed at the track for a number of years as a co-driver and in other categories and is familiar with the iconic circuit.

“It is my favourite track,” he says.

“I have had a great time here in different categories like the utes and the Dunlop Series. It is a circuit I enjoy and I think that is a reason why I have had some success here in the past.

“This year will be a little bit different.

“I have only come here before as a co-driver so coming to the event for the first time as the main driver will introduce some new aspects for me – with potential to do some longer runs during the race and obviously qualifying the car as well.”

It is a venue that he expects to have better success at too.

“Here at Mt Panorama the circuit suits our car a lot more being faster and more flowing and obviously being on the hard tyre is not a bad thing for us so I am pretty excited.

“My experience here in the past tells me you need to chip away during the day and be there to race in the last couple of stints with a straight car.

“I am pretty confident we are in good shape.”

Plenty of focus will be on Pither’s co-driver this weekend.

Stanaway, who has spent a number of years racing various categories in Europe, has hinted he would like a fulltime Supercars drive in the future.

Hohneck helping out Highlanders prop Josh Hohneck has emerged from Waikouaiti to help Otago out of something of a propping crisis. Hohneck (30) will sit on the bench for Otago today when they take on CountiesManukau at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Hohneck had ended his season with the Highlanders and had signed a contract with Gloucester in England.

Baabaas player shortage The NZ Barbarians Schools were scratching around for players this week after losing several through injury and promotion to the NZ Schools. It was all a bit stressful for coach Ryan Martin, but he is confident his charges will meet the physical Fijian Schools’ challenge head-on in today’s international.

Monday’s fine 28-17 victory over Australian Schools came at a price, losing both midfielders, Quinn Tupaea and Tanielu Tele’a to injury.

They have whistled up AJ Lam of St Peter’s College (Auckland) and Hayze Perham of Rotorua BHS as replacements, and they will come off the bench today.

Try-scoring prop a team man

Mike Lynch is hoping his solid run of form continues when Mid Canterbury lock horns with Thames Valley at the Ashburton Showgrounds this afternoon.

Lynch has proved a major asset to Mid Canterbury’s front row having started in all but one Heartland fixture this season, while scoring four tries along the way.

The Guardian last caught up with the 22-year-old shortly after he arrived from his native Ireland to play club rugby for a struggling Methven senior side.

The tighthead prop had not long downed tools after a long season with the University of Limerick Bohemians in his homeland, but was ready to bolster Andy Pearce’s forward pack.

During his time in the black and white of Methven, Lynch also had one eye on the green and gold of Mid Canterbury.

“I want to make the Mid Canterbury team, that’s the aim,” Lynch said when asked his goals in June.

His performances at club level quickly caught the attention of Mid Canterbury co-coaches James Jowsey and Craig Dunlea, and Lynch hasn’t looked back since.

The Irishman has registered tries against North Otago, Buller, West Coast and East Coast so far, but has little interest in individual glory.

“I’m not thinking about myself when I’m out there.

“It’s about the team, I don’t care if I score a try or not,” he said.

And it’s been a remarkable turnaround of fortunes.

The biomedical engineering student was set to play at the World Rugby Under-20 Championships in New Zealand two years ago, but a string of injuries dashed his hopes of representing Ireland.

Lynch had a hip labral tear, which side-lined him for a year – but his injury woes didn’t end there.

On the road to recovery he tore a hamstring and then tore ligaments in his ankle.

The prolonged and frustrating spell away from the game was one of the reasons why Lynch jumped at his second chance to play in New Zealand – and he’s certainly making the most of it.

Lynch is now fully focused on helping the Hammers to a third Meads Cup in four seasons, and is confident Mid Canterbury have the personnel to go all the way.

“I think we can go the whole way, we have definitely come into the latter part of the season all guns blazing,” he said.

Lynch credited his team-mates for their attitude and determination to return to winning ways following back-to-back losses against Buller and WairarapaBush earlier in the season, insisting the change of form has arrived at the perfect time.

“I think the guys showed great resolve.

“We have stuck to the game plan and as the season has progressed everyone’s buying into the whole ethos – we’re coming strong at the right time.”

Jones regime earns Premiership Rugby ire Eddie Jones has been accused

by Premiership Rugby of placing player welfare at risk after staging a full-bore training camp that has resulted in his England regime being criticised for the first time.

An intense session in Brighton has seen Anthony Watson added to a list of players who will miss the autumn series after the Bath wing

broke his jaw during a collision.

On the same day it emerged that Wasps flanker Sam Jones faced months out after fracturing his right leg during a judo session, while Mike Brown and Joe Marler and George Kruis have been unable to train since.

Kruis’ director of rugby Mark McCall views the timing of the

three-day camp on the south coast as “flabbergasting” and “madness” due to its proximity to the opening round of European rugby.

The main object of McCall’s anger is Premiership Rugby, who he suggests needs to be “careful chasing all this money at the expense of the clubs” in reference to the PS225 million ($NZ374m)

deal recently agreed between Twickenham and the domestic league that enshrined the unsatisfactory date for the camp.

A month after saying the All Blacks have ‘significant weaknesses’, Jones looks to have changed his tune. “To me, Steve Hansen has a lot to say about everything and he’s entitled to when he’s winning 90 per cent of his Test matches,” Jones said. “I’m not going to comment on anything Steve says.”

Tasman upsets Auks You might have expected a wet Thursday night at Eden Park to yield only dour rugby and a dearth of tries. You would have been proved badly wrong.

Auckland and the Tasman Makos fought out an eight-try Premiership joust in which the Makos took the honours and deservedly were victorious at this venue for the first time in their decade-long history. Both sides scored four tries apiece but Tasman’s staunch defence and forward dominance stood out, along with that man Marty Banks. He kicked 10 from 10 for 26 points.

Steelers up against it Counties Manukau’s insipid display against the Tasman Makos last week has painted them into a corner. It all means they face a must-win crossover clash against a hurting Otago side in Dunedin tomorrow as they contemplate a Premiership logjam for the three semi-final berths after Canterbury.

On the plus side, Chiefs wing Toni Pulu returns from a broken finger to take his place on the bench, which will add to their outside firepower. On the minus side, inform halfback Augustine Pulu was suspended for this match after a dangerous tackle against the Makos. “The (suspension) could have been worse. He was cited, and it wasn’t great technique,” says Steelers coach Darryl Suasua, who has handed another opportunity to Richard Judd in the No 9 jersey.

Boks in total disarray

T

he Springboks were always the true rugby test, a side with the history, know-how and skilled players who never gave in.

These days, they’ve become green and white doormats, a squad whose talent has been shredded by political selection systems, a lack of quality coaching, struggling administration and planning.

It’s a disastrous sporting brew, with the glimmer of the Lions’ performance offering hope during Super Rugby which has not been translated into national combat.

There were crazy Springbok times with coach Peter de Villiers but some serious clout in his squad helped before the emotional Heyneke Meyer gathered and kept his men ticking over with strong success against all but the All Blacks.

There were a number of close contests where the All Blacks were taken to their limits, yet on all but one occasion managed to outlast Meyer’s men.

However, everyone is beating Allister Coetzee’s squad in his first year at the helm: Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.

All that mystique, all those stories both fabled and true about the Springbok strengths are being eroded.

All the advantages lie with the Boks until you compare the teams.

They are at home eating their own braii and dossing down in their own beds while the All Blacks were on the road to Argentina and then had three flights in a 24-hour roster to get to their hotel in Durban.

Forecasts for the test suggest

But it’s all talk about damage limitation, ways to restrict the All Blacks and methods to cut down the victory margin.

Even that great and proud Springbok midfielder Jean de Villiers is talking about another

All Black march to victory.

It’s as inevitable as Aaron Smith ... you know the rest.

There’s some sting in the Boks where they have world class locks Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jaager, robust loosie Francois Louw, some random sting from captain Adriaan Strauss and an

occasional backline hiss, but not that much more.

They are cheddar which the All Blacks should turn into Swiss cheese, it’s only a question of how long the process takes.

When the backs get the ball, Morne Steyn is so far back, Brodie Retallick needs to change his contact lenses to discover him, while the Bok halfback has to alter his passing protractor by about 90 degrees.

That allows the All Blacks to flood across the advantage line as Steyne resorts to his A, B and C tactical kicking plans.

All the All Black ideas are a metre sharper than their rivals.

They know what they are doing because they have trained so effectively, while the Boks are catching the ball, then thinking what they should do.

Their instincts are to hang on to possession rather than let it free.

That’s fine, and when it’s done well, as England and Argentina have shown, it becomes a destructively accurate way of breaking down the All Black resistance.

The Boks have not mastered that level of precision and when they spill possession or kick it away recklessly, they become vulnerable.

Maybe they will find the magic elixir early on Sunday to stop the All Blacks.

Very few expected the 18-18 deadlock against the Wallabies in 2012 which halted the All Blacks bid for a record winning sequence or another impasse against the Wallabies in 2014.

If the All Blacks go “bone deep” in their preparation, they will equal the world record in what has been a year of continued acceleration from the men in black.

Second place means nothing to Wallabies Pinching a line from the fictional American NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has left no doubt about what he wants from his team for the rest of the year – and the rest of his time in charge.

“If you ain’t first, you’re last,” was the memorable catchcry from Will Ferrell’s character in the comedy Talladega Nights.

He didn’t say it with much of a smile on his face, but Cheika made it clear his thoughts on finishing second and below.

It matters little that Australia surged to an unlikely appearance in last year’s World Cup final - in fact Cheika’s gone to great lengths this week to distance this team from those achievements.

“I don’t remember who was in the World Cup final – I only remember New Zealand won it,” Cheika deadpanned yesterday.

night would likely result in a second-place finish in the Rugby Championship for the Wallabies – who currently trail South Africa by one point.

But with the Springboks facing off against the seemingly unstoppable All Blacks in the final round, second place is well and truly up for grabs.

“No one cares about second.

While winning is the only thing that matters, Cheika is also determined to create a depth in Australian rugby which will hold it in good stead for a decade to come.

Cheika has blooded 10 debutants already in 2016 – with Bath-based No.8 Leroy Houston a chance to become the eleventh after being named on an extended bench this weekend.

Though he’s insistent that the number of new faces is not an excuse for failure, nor for the fact the Wallabies have won just twice since the World Cup final.

“I think the goal is to go into everything you do, to win, and build that habit,” he said.

“For us, it’s with a new generation of players.

“I’ve always been in that mindset in that I believe in what I do.

“I don’t know if it’s gutsy or not, but it’s the right to do.

“I still believe we should be winning games,” Cheika added, referencing last week’s tight loss to South Africa and the three-nil sweep to England as examples of matches the Wallabies should be winning.

“I felt they were games we should’ve won even with a changing team.”

Cheika’s steadfast youth policy will be on show once again in the

historic clash at Twickenham – the first Rugby Championship match played in the northern hemisphere.

Cheika has plumped for an inexperienced locking duo of Rory Arnold and Adam Coleman and handed a run-on debut to No.8 Lopeti Timani, with 22-year-old props Tom Robertson and Allan Alaalatoa named ahead of the experienced James Slipper on the bench.

For the 208cm Arnold, the faith shown by Cheika in the young bucks is admirable.

“There’s not much experience there but you’ve got older guys in the team that have a lot of experience and they’ve been helping all the new capped players coming through,” Arnold said.

“It’s good to have those guys there and have a mixture of young blood coming through as well.”

Carter drug anomalies explained

By Dylan Cleaver A leading French newspaper is claiming there are “anomalies” in surprise drug tests undertaken by former All Blacks Dan Carter and Joe Rokocoko on the eve of this year’s France Top 14 final.

However, the players’ management say the pair had the correct clearance for the use of prescribed medication including lodging therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) with authorities.

Simon Porter, a player manager from the Essentially Group, which represent both players, said he has been aware of the bubbling story since the final in Spain on June 24.

“We have been aware of the issue for a few weeks. Our understanding and assurances we’ve had are all the documents around TUEs were in place.”

Carter, who played 112 tests for the All Blacks, was named man of the match in Racing’s 29-21 win over Toulon at Barcelona’s Nou Camp.

Porter said Carter was receiving medication, probably cortisone, for a calf injury that ultimately forced him off the field for his Racing Metro Club in the Heineken Cup final against English club Saracens in May. Rokocoko, who also plays for Paris powerhouse Racing, was recovering from a knee injury.

Paris-based L’Equipe newspaper, regarded as the sports bible of French sport, is claiming that France’s official anti-doping agency conducted urine tests on all players involved in the final between Racing Metro and Toulon.

The tests were held at the Camp Nou facility, home of the famous Barcelona football club, on the eve of the final.

The surprise tests were conducted under a bilateral agreement between France and Spain.

L’Equipe reported “the first analytical results have detected abnormalities in the urine of three players of Racing”.

Carter was man-of-the-match in Racing’s 29-21 victory over Toulon while Rockocoko was also on the winning team on the wing and scored and brilliant chip and chase try in the first half.

The Toulon side featured former All Black Ma’a Nonu.

Another All Black Chris Masoe turned out for Racing.

L’Equipe is reporting that Carter, Rokocoko and Imhoff do not have a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) which would have allowed to play even if they were taking the corticosteroids for medical purposes.

“These traces of steroids, prohibited substances in competition without permission,” reported the paper.

However Porter said both players were relatively “relaxed” because they believed the club doctor had filled in the required documents.

They also got prize packs that contained some Canterbury Cricket branded stationery, a cricket ball and a cricket bat key ring.

Timing is everything – on and off the field T

he Smith Affair has been done to death, with all sides having their say, and depending on who you read and listen to Aaron Smith is either a wicked serial criminal, or a poor boy regrettably caught in an unavoidable trap by a conniving rugby groupie.

The couple that filmed/taped his transgressions are either money-hungry rogues callously destroying a fine, upstanding young man’s career, or honest, respectable citizens rightly bringing to our attention nasty goings-on in our airport facilities.

You can follow the torrent of words on social media, or you’ve probably made up your own mind already, so I won’t bother you with any more of the gory details.

Suffice to say that Smith’s

worst crime (remembering of course that nobody was hurt in the making of this drama, and no actual crime took place) was one of timing.

This is somewhat ironic considering his million-dollar career is based on making vital, split-second decisions which can affect the careers of all his team-mates, and his judgement and correct decision-making is lauded the world over; in fact he’s generally regarded as the best in the business.

His problem?

The Rugby Union has in recent months suffered two major black eyes, and their only shining light has been their top team, the jewel in the crown, the all-conquering All Blacks, a team beyond reproach both on and off the field.

When the nice lady said “Come here, little boy”, all his fine judgement, option-taking and risk-assessment skills deserted him, in favour of a bit of nooky in the dunnies.

One thing of note in the whole tawdry situation is the on-going emergence of Jerome Kaino as the Godfather of the All Blacks squad.

More and more he appears to be the man keeping a benevolent but firm grip on how the team behaves on tour as a major part of the leadership group,

contributing guidance to the young fellas while never letting anyone forget the terrible retribution he’s capable of (on-field of course!).

Sometimes the blindside flanker misses out on the kudos while the flash No. 7s are constantly all over the ball, but if you spend some time watching Kaino in, well, any test he’s ever been in really (and there’s been 72 of them thus far) you’ll see what the word ‘workload’ actually means.

When the All Blacks smash the Springboks by a record score in Durban tomorrow morning, no matter who turns out at halfback (even Damian McKenzie could conceivably get a shot at it) there’s no doubt that Jerome Kaino will be playing a major part – on and off the paddock.

New Zealand’s first innings batting has undergone its share of scrutiny in the lead-up to the final test of the dead rubber series against India starting today.

When they have played away in the past 12 months, the scores are acceptable.

Excluding the 15-2 in the washed out draw with South Africa, they have averaged 373-run totals in eight innings as part of two wins, one draw and five losses.

Remove two 500-plus declarations in the victories over Zimbabwe and the landscape reverts to an average of 304.

That appears sound, especially seeing they have never been dismissed for less than 202 runs away.

The problem lies in it being sub-standard compared to their opposition.

They were behind on the first innings in all but the 624 against Australia at Perth – and those anomalous Zimbabwe tests.

Before the tour to Australia they had not suffered defeat in a record seven series; now they have lost four of their last six.

Examples of inadequate first innings include the two tests of this series.

Scores of 262 and 204 are no reason to incite panic or expect wholesale changes, but they suggest the top order is not providing the necessary base for bowlers to mark out their run-ups with gusto.

New Zealand have been 56 runs (Kanpur) and 112 runs (Kolkata) behind.

Given they’ve batted fourth on both occasions, staying in contention has proved impossible once India extended their lead.

Batting coach Craig McMillan acknowledged the problem.

“The reality is neither of those scores [in India] are good enough, even if India won both tosses.

“You can’t give the opposition a lead of 100-plus.

“A lot of our chats have been about the first 15 balls.

“Some other countries you can come out to bat and the ball’s not doing much. You can face a straight one.

“Here the ball is moving constantly through the 80 overs so your footwork and mental adjustment at the start of an innings is crucial, and we’ve lost three to four quick wickets [on occasion] because of those challenges.”

One theory is that players’ confidence is threatened without the comfort they can go to the Decision Review System, now a commonplace scenario outside Indian tests to insure against howlers.

“We’ve got to play straight and trust our defence and have a positive mindset,” stand-in captain Ross Taylor said in reference to the lack of DRS in the second test loss.

Now in his fifth successful season in partnership with Andrew Forsman, he will have a crack at a topflight double today with Saracino and La Luna Rossa respective form

runners for the Caulfield Guineas and the Thousand Guineas.

The dual Group Two winner of the Foxbridge Plate and in the Danehill Stakes at his Australian debut, Saracino was a last-start fifth behind Sacred Elixir in the Gr.3 Guineas Prelude.

“He was only a length from them and didn’t get much of a go,”

Baker said. “He would have gone very close with the right run and we think he will run out the mile okay.”

La Luna Rossa was having just her second start this term when second in the Gr.2 Guineas Prelude at Caulfield in her first Australian appearance.

“We hadn’t done a lot with her

going into her last start and we are certain she has improved with the race,” Baker said.

He had two three-year-old runners at Flemington last Sunday with the Wanganui Guineas winner Highlad wilting late to finish third in the Listed UCI Stakes while Eleonora was blocked for a run in the Gr.2 Manifold Stakes.

People from all over the country are expected to turn up today to walk, run, bike and kayak across Rakaia.

It’s still possible to join in on the fun and registrations for the second annual Rakaia Salmon Run start at 8am however, there is a late fee and you must pay in cash.

The Salmon Run has six events, from an easy 6km fun walk for families, to a 62km multisport event.

The multisport event consists of a 35km bike ride, a

14km kayak and a 13km run.

The event starts in the Rakaia Domain and there will be a number of pavilions, including one where people can buy refreshments.

Shannon Boyd is set to add to his stellar NRL season by making his Test debut for Australia next week – and it could even be as part of the run-on side.

Boyd was the bolter in coach Mal Meninga’s 24-man Four Nations squad named on Tuesday, the hulking Canberra prop one of seven rookies named.

He appears a certain selection for Saturday week’s Test against Four Nations champions New Zealand in Perth.

Incumbent prop Paul Gallen and interchange front-rowers James Tamou and Josh McGuire missed out on selection in the squad, meaning there are at least three spots open in Meninga’s 17.

With Wests Tigers skipper Aaron Woods getting married, it opens the way for Boyd to not only make the squad, but also force his way into the starting side alongside Matt Scott.

Woods said Boyd would not be out of place.

“He is a big boy, he will get the boys going forward for sure,” Woods said. “He will make a big impact on this Aussie squad now and into the future.”

Whose wrong is more wrong?

I

t is not okay to whip into a public toilet for a sexual encounter; it’s even less okay if that encounter does not involve your significant other.

But it’s also absolutely not okay to record the incident and then hand that recording over to the media.

The couple who made a recording at Christchurch Airport of All Black Aaron Smith clearly up to hanky panky with a woman in a toilet has had repercussions they probably could never have imagined.

Smith’s been sent home in disgrace, his partner quite rightly is incensed, the media and the public are having a field day and, most appropriately, the whistleblowers are being labelled creeps and perverts among other less polite names.

Yes, Smith shouldn’t have done what he did. While he wasn’t onfield playing rugby, he was still on official rugby business. Quite clearly what happened shouldn’t have happened, but what in the name of God did the toilet voyeurs hope to gain?

They’ve claimed they didn’t go seeking cash so perhaps they’re a couple without sin, happy to cast a stone at someone who clearly, in their books, is a sinner.

Now that the feedback is rolling in and they’re not being hailed as upholders of all that is moral behaviour, the pair are saying they were initially reluctant to “report” the incident. On what level were they required under what law to report whatever was going on in that airport toilet?

There’s no question that two people don’t belong in a toilet at the same time, but ask 1000 people if they’d stand and listen and then record what they heard, clearly with the intention of making public fodder of it, it’s an odds on bet 98 out of 100 would say no.

Smith just got unlucky. He just happened to get the two who were members of the moral police.

The female of the pair claims she went public because doing the wild thing in a public toilet wasn’t something a sports role-model should be doing; her other half is now feeling a bit embarrassed about the whole incident.

And Smith of course is in disgrace. He’s humiliated and who knows what’s happened to his relationship.

It’s a mess on every front.

Fulltime online learning – why it won’t work

I

n schools we have often been told that our country has led the way with innovative education practice and policy.

Think reading recovery and our curriculum, both have been held up overseas as excellent education practice.

So whilst reading the UK Telegraph, it was interesting to note that a recent announcement by our education minister, has ended up being opinionated in the UK. The announcement was around the idea of online learning in the future.

There is no doubt that the online world of learning has exploded in and outside of the classroom, and a change to legislation allowing schools to explore this further and offer more online, is worth discussing.

However, no legislation and well-run online school could ever overcome the will of the child.

Online learning would require a willing student and so I give you my top five reasons why online lessons will fail.

Number five: Cute animals and people being stupid videos: That’s right, just as you have logged on and settled in for a thrilling one-hour geometry lesson, you get a pop-up for a new cute animal video. This time it’s of a baby panda poking a zookeeper with bamboo, while the Star Wars Theme plays in the background.

Next thing you know you have followed a link that takes you to a compilation of people re-enacting Star Wars fights with light sabers and hitting each other like piñatas until someone is knocked out.

Number four: Techno savvy kids: Let’s face it, the average adult over 40 gets excited when they can send a photo on their phone to someone else.

There is this theory that being

Number three: Anti-establishment: Every generation rejects ideas and behaviours of the previous generation.

The minister immediately killed the idea of online learning for children by coming up with the acronym COOL – Communities Of Online Learning.

Straight away, no child will think this is cool at all. The whole digital world exists as a form of escapism for children.

Tell them it’s for learning up to

online is engaging for kids. Actually it’s not, it is just an easy and addictive way to pass time.

Our kids know how to get around passwords, find shortcuts, share information and create entire digital worlds.

Online learning will bore them silly and they will find a way to meet the requirements without having to do any work. Without direct supervision, they will choose the most entertaining way to get through what needs to be done.

I’ve never met a child that turns up to school and wishes to please

six hours a day and they will turn it off.

Number two: Procrastination: Think you’ve issues now getting a child to school when they are not in the mood, wait until you have to ask them to sit up in bed and open up a laptop to do spelling. Children are very creative and look for the most here-and-now moment that will capture their attention.

All of a sudden breakfast, getting dressed, teeth brushing, checking the mailbox, even tidying their room will be more engaging than the relentless grind

of sitting daily at a screen.

Ask any adult who sits for hours on end punching a keyboard, if this how they want to spend every day, and I bet they say no.

Ask them if they find other things to do to put off some administrivia and I bet they say yes.

Children are no different.

Number one: Being human: The very essence that makes us who and what we are, is our need to interact with others.

Our identity, our sense of selfworth and belonging comes from being with others. This is us as humans. If learning could happen by remote, then TVs would have been used decades ago to do this.

Learning does not happen in isolation. Acquiring knowledge online can happen, but that is not learning. Life is not about the ability to acquire knowledge and spew it out when needed.

Living and learning are intertwined, we never stop learning and we learn the best when we learn with others. The notion that we could equip ourselves with the knowledge, skills, behaviours, attributes, values, opinions, and competencies from online learning is pure fantasy.

To learn is to live with others and no amount of digital advancement can replace that.

T

his past weekend The Salvation Army held a Congress weekend in Wellington.

Salvationists, families and friends from New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga all gathered for four days of celebrations and equipping for the future.

The Salvation Army, in Maori is Te Ope Whakaora and translated is The Army that Brings Life.

And so we have come away from Wellington to our home base with the charge to bring life to the people we meet and interact with wherever we are.

Coming home after weekends away always seems to bring me back to my reality.

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

Sitting on my countertop in the kitchen was an unopened letter from the Electoral Commission reminding me I need to vote, to have my say in the local body elections as to who would bring life to our district.

I understand the electoral commission is only expecting around 30 per cent voter turnout.

Yes they would hope for 100 per cent voter turnout, but the reality is the majority will not vote.

What has caused us to become apathetic to showing an interest in the way our local communities are run?

What has caused us to not care for the things that are important to maintaining a healthy and vibrant community where people come to enjoy a great lifestyle in Mid Canterbury?

You may know the answers to these questions.

So last evening I went through the papers and booklet and carefully selected the candidates that I hope will bring life, inject life, to enable the Ashburton District to be infused with life for future generations.

I did my part, kicked off the apathy and voted because I seek to bring “life” in all my activities.

The congress gathering in Wellington used a scripture reference from John 10:10 NLT where Jesus said: “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

And I seek to bring the life that Jesus gives in everything I do.

Voting was just one aspect, now to pay the bills.

Will you vote and help bring life? We’ve got till 12 noon today.

Let’s do it!

Women of an invisible age A woman her age is supposed to be invisible. But Hillary Clinton, who is 68, refuses to disappear – and there is no shortage of people who despise her for it.

One voter at a Donald Trump rally described her last week as an angry, crotchety old hag. Trump, who isn’t exactly a spring chicken at age 70, claims Clinton lacks stamina and a presidential look and mocked her by actually acting out her stumble when she had pneumonia last month.

There’s misogyny, and then there’s the ageist misogyny that older woman face. That undercurrent runs very deep in our culture, and it’s one of the reasons the haters hate Hillary Clinton so deeply.

No one has talked about this much, but it’s a very real phenomenon in this election.

The presidential nominee is confounding America because she represents a demographic that our culture secretly dislikes: older women.

Everyone is guilty – even women themselves. Earlier polls showed that women Clinton’s age supported her, but younger women overwhelmingly supported Senator Bernie Sanders.

Maybe a wise grandpa made sense to them. But grandma?

In the Oval Office? Shaking their heads. Does. Not. Compute.

The older, wise woman has rarely had a starring role in the American story, beyond grandma and her cookies.

Most women in this age bracket remember the day they realised they had become invisible – that moment when the salesman pushing a bigticket product looked right past them, when the clerk who was so chatty with the guy in front of them ignores them, when the intern treats them like a nonentity rather than an experienced superior.

This isn’t only about the silencing of catcalls and other changes that come with age.

Most women welcome the end of that attention. No, there’s something deeper and inhumane about the dismissal.

There are plenty of countries for old men in Hollywood, though, according to a study.

The study looked at 414 scripted movies, TV shows and digital series from major media companies. Of the characters over 40? Men got 80 percent of the roles.

Hello, Hollywood. There are older women besides Helen Mirren, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep.

Another study looked at what happened when 40,000 fake résumés carefully created to reflect a breadth of age-appropriate experience were sent out for all kinds of jobs in cities across the country.

And yup, you guessed it. The number of callbacks for older women was way lower than for younger women. In some cases 47 per cent lower. But when it came to men, young and old got equal shots at jobs, wrinkles and ear hair be darned.

Powerful older women? We apparently still can’t get our heads around this concept.

What about all that wisdom, experience, the things they’ve seen, the things they know?

Discarding older women means discarding years of knowledge and know-how.

The grandmother hypothesis even suggests that older women – and killer whales, the only other species to go through menopause – are biologically made to lead. That’s why their fertility ends, so they can get to the business of being leaders to all those creatures they created.

But there is hope that the invisibility trend is fading.

It’s time to get used to it.

Older women will be invisible no more.

Protests fail to stop telescope Dead granny Hawaii’s Supreme Court affirmed a permit to build a solar telescope on a Maui mountain.

The ruling denies a challenge by a group seeking to protect the sacredness of the summit of Haleakala The University of Hawaii followed proper procedure for an environmental assessment, the Supreme Court also ruled in a separate ruling.

Last year, eight people were arrested when protesters tried to stop a construction convoy heading to the solar telescope site.

Kahele Dukelow, one of the protest leaders, said opponents are disappointed and considering what their next steps will be.

“We only have one alternative now,” she said. “We have to continue to protest in other ways.”

They hoped the decision would be similar to the

court’s ruling last year that invalidated a permit to build the Thirty Meter Telescope on the Big Island’s Mauna Kea. That project has been the focus of more intense protests. Opposition to both telescopes cite concerns that the projects will desecrate sacred land.

The permit approval process was not procedurally flawed by prejudgment nor was it flawed by impermissible ex parte communication, the court’s 3-2 majority opinion said.

State Attorney General Doug Chin said his office will look into whether the rulings have any impact on future matters before the state land board, including the Thirty Meter Telescope.

Attorneys representing the group that challenged the solar telescope’s permit, Kilakila O Haleakala,

didn’t immediately comment. Officials with the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope also didn’t immediately comment.

“We are still reviewing the full decisions, but we look forward to first light when the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope will open a new era of discovery in Hawaii, about the sun and its daily impacts on all life on Earth,” university President David Lassner said in a statement.

External construction of the Maui telescope is complete, with only internal work remaining, according to the university. The $340 million project is scheduled to be operational in 2019. Construction of the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope remains stalled pending a new contested case hearing scheduled to begin later this month.

Sir Ian McKellen is to be the subject of a new documentary. The 77-year-old actor has starred in a number of blockbuster movies including Lord of the Rings and X Men, and now he is set to get his own documentary which aims to explore his rich and varied experiences both on screen and off. Joe Stephenson is directing the project, named McKellen: Playing The Part, and managed to conduct 14 hours of interview time with the British actor, which will be used amongst recreations of scenes from the star’s life, as well as rare archive material of his early work,

Just a month after her split with Cara Delevingne it seems singer St Vincent has become very close to Kristen Stewart.

The Sun reports that St Vincent was last seen with Stewart at the New York Film Festival where she accompanied her to the premiere of her latest film Certain Women. Strolling through New York, the pair looked relaxed as they took in some autumn sunshine. With their matching black miniskirts it appears the girls may have tried to co-ordinate their outfits, with St Vincent - real name Annie Clark - topping off her look with a band T-shirt and an embroidered bomber jacket.

A man fearful he would become homeless after the death of his doting 85-year-old grandmother five months ago kept her corpse wrapped in plastic bags inside her house, masking the smell with air fresheners and a fan.

Christopher Fuhrer, 30, was arrested on improper burial and other charges after officers conducting a welfare check at Erika Kraus-Breslin’s two-story Queens home discovered her body, according to police.

“She loved this kid,” said Toni Binanti, owner of a nearby bakery where KrausBreslin worked for nearly two decades.

The medical examiner was to determine exactly how Kraus-Breslin died, though police said the death itself did not appear suspicious.

Fuhrer moved in with his grandmother several years ago, Binanti said.

Neighbours described him as a quiet man who rarely socialised with others.

Officers found Kraus-Breslin in an upstairs bedroom, police said. Her body was wrapped in layers of plastic bags, they said.

EU gets power to seize vessels The UN Security Council adopted a resolution Wednesday authorising the European Union and individual countries to seize migrantsmuggling vessels on the high seas off Libya for another year.

The resolution, adopted by a vote of 14-0 with Venezuela abstaining, stressed that the council’s aim is “to disrupt the organized criminal enterprises engaged in migrant smuggling and human trafficking and prevent loss of life.”

Britain’s UN Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said after the vote that he wanted to make clear that the EU’s Operation Sophia “is only targeting smugglers and empty boats.” He said migrants found during the operation are taken to Europe.

Since the UN authorised the interdictions in October last year, Rycroft said, the Operation Sophia flotilla has directly apprehended 90 suspected smugglers and has made over 300 smuggling vessels unusable.

The EU operation is also estimated to have rescued over 26,000 people, he said.

“But the smuggling networks have not been defeated,” Rycroft stressed.

“The migration crisis remains one of our greatest shared challenges,” he said. “Thousands have perished crossing the Mediterranean and thousands more continue to risk their lives to find

In brief Down the toilet A New Hampshire farm stand is letting customers put their votes for US president where he thinks they belong: right in the toilet.

Owens Truck Farm is home to an outhouse-turned-fake-voting booth with mannequins of presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and toilets to cast ballots. Farm stand owner Chris Owens said that customers have been stopping by for photos and to vote at the Ashland farm.

He says he’s collected a couple hundred ballots already. Above the Trump mannequin is a sign that reads, “If I am elected, we will build a wall between Plymouth and Rumney, and Rumney will pay for it,” referring to two nearby towns.

Owens plans to tally the just-forfun votes next month.

And it authorises the seizure of those con-

firmed as being used for migrant smuggling.

The council underscored that the resolution “is not intended to undermine the human rights of individuals or prevent them from seeking protection under international human rights law and international refugee law.”

And it emphasised that “all migrants, including asylum seekers, should be treated with humanity and dignity and that their rights should be fully protected.”

Mob boss arrested after 5 years on run One of Italy’s most-wanted fugitive mob bosses was arrested after five years when police found him hiding in a home bunker built between the bathroom and his son’s bedroom.

Antonio Pelle, 54, crawled out of his hiding place on his stomach to the top of an armoire that had shielded the bunker at his home in southern Reggio Calabria.

Video of his surrender showed at least two dozen police surrounding the wardrobe waiting for him to emerge.

serving a 20-year prison sentence for mafia association, arms and drug trafficking when he slipped out of a hospital in the town of Locri in September 2011. He had been taken to the hospital to be treated for anorexia, Italian news reports said.

Pelle, who was on the Interior Ministry’s list of most dangerous mob fugitives, is considered the boss of the Pelle-Romeo clan of San Luca, in Italy’s southern Calabria region. The clan’s longrunning feud with the rival Nirta-Strangio family erupted in a

bloody vendetta in Germany in 2007, when a gangland massacre at an Italian restaurant left six people dead.

The carnage drew international attention to the reach of Calabria’s ‘ndrangheta mob, which is today considered more powerful than the Sicilian Mafia and has become one of the world’s biggest cocaine traffickers.

The Reggio Calabria police chief, Raffaele Grassi, said Pelle was the last of the “strategic protagonists” of the long-running San Luca feud.

“With his capture and the trials underway, each piece of the mosaic has been put in place,” the ANSA news agency quoted Grassi as saying at a press conference announcing the arrest.

The San Luca feud cooled between 2000 and 2006, but erupted again when Maria Strangio, the wife of one of the presumed heads of the Strangio clan, was killed on December 25, 2006. The retaliatory massacre in Duisburg, Germany marked the first known time the ‘ndrangheta exported a vendetta.

More Aussies give up booze Australians are drinking less alcohol, with the number of people abstaining from the booze on the rise, a report says.

However, the younger generations continue to drink at risky levels.

The Trends in alcohol availability, use and treatment report, released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) on Friday, says that 18-to-24-year-olds are the group most likely to report having consumed alcohol at risky levels.

Nearly half, or 47 per cent, of all young adults report regularly drinking risky levels of alcohol on a single occasion.

In 2013-2014, the amount of alcohol con-

sumed per person was 9.7 litres, down from 10.8 litres in 2008-09.

The proportion of Australians who abstain from drinking alcohol has also risen in recent years, from 17 per cent in 2004 to 22 per cent in 2013.

Those with a drinking problem are also 20 per cent more likely to seek help, compared to a decade ago, the report said.

For every 10,000 people, 30 sought alcohol treatment in 2013-14.

AIHW spokesman Tim Beard says the results suggest strategies such as increasing the price of alcohol and restricting trading hours have had a positive outcome in re-

ducing the overall consumption levels of alcohol.

Mr Beard said that while there are positive drinking patterns emerging overall, patterns of risky drinking and alcohol dependence continue to be significant issues in Australia, especially among young Australians.

Typhoon kills 7 A typhoon that battered South Korea this week killed seven people and left three others missing, the country’s safety agency said. Typhoon Chaba caused strong winds and heavy rain in southeastern South Korea and the southern resort island of Jeju. The storm dissipated after moving off the east coast. The seven dead include one person who fell from a breakwater and another who fell from the roof of a house, the Ministry of Public Safety and Security said in a statement. It said the typhoon made 190 others homeless and temporarily left about 229,000 households without power.

Supplement ill health Doctors have warned of the dangers of alternative medicines after a four-year-old autistic boy was admitted to a UK hospital suffering adverse effects from a cocktail of supplements. The child had been vomiting and constipated for three weeks before he was taken to hospital and diagnosed with severe hypercalcaemia. Police were called to investigate a naturopath who had advised the family to give their son a combination different complementary therapies including calcium, vitamin D, camel milk and zinc. The boy eventually made a full recovery two weeks later. -AP

Interest rates will soon begin to climb again, English says Bad news for those with a mortgage, but good news for depositers – interest rates could be about to start climbing.

Finance Minister Bill English is in Washington DC, for meetings with reps for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, as well as international ratings agencies.

He said everyone seems to think interest rates have reached the bottom and will soon begin to climb again.

“The Reserve Banks around the world believe more cuts in interest rates may not have the stimulating effect on the economy that they used to have,” he said.

However, English said what they can’t agree on is the timeline.

“What we do know is that if you’ve got very high levels of debt because you’ve paid a lot for your house, then you’ve taken a risk and if interest rates rise sooner than expected, you’re going to be under pressure.”

English said New Zealanders burdened by debt should pay it off now, before the rise in interest rates makes it impossible.

NZ firms lagging in cyber security survey New Zealand companies are over-reliant on basic cyber security measures and struggling to respond to an increasingly complex digital world, according to a survey.

Although more cyber attacks are coming from insiders and business partners, two-thirds of organisations still use basic penetrations tests as their primary control rather than developing a comprehensive strategy.

Penetrations tests identify weak points in a company’s IT infrastructure so they can be addressed before a security breach.

The Global State of Information Security Survey 2017, the first part of which has been released by Pwc New Zealand, says local businesses are lagging in their cyber security spending compared with the rest of the world.

The proportion using managed security services is almost half that of Australia (44 per cent compared with 78 per cent).

At the same time, the origins of cyber attacks are becoming more diverse.

The study says respondents were twice as likely to report se-

curity breaches that originate from their business partners compared with last year (21 per cent compared with 10 per cent).

“Rather than trying to ringfence their organisation, companies now have to develop a proactive security approach across their entire digital presence,” PwC cyber practice leader Adrian van Hest said.

“That means holding suppliers accountable for breaches, addressing the risk from employees and treating customer data privacy as a competitive advantage.”

Pea Truck and Harvester Drivers Talley’s Ashburton is looking to employ truck and harvester drivers for our upcoming pea harvest, starting early November.

Truck Drivers A class 2 or 4 licence is preferable, to operate our company owned pea trucks to and from our factory located in Fairton, however there will be an opportunity for the successful applicants to be trained in gaining a class 2 or 4 licence.

You will need to hold a minimum of a class 2 and heavy wheels endorsement on your licence, however for the successful applicants full training can be given to obtain these. Experience would be an advantage although not essential.

Seasonal Part Time Position

If you have: • A can do positive attitude • Good attention to detail • Mechanical aptitude • Good computer skills

Approx 25-30hrs a week, 4.30pm start.

This position requires a mature honest and reliable person who has customer services skills and can work unsupervised.
