“All hell’s broken loose.”

That was the frank summation from Willowby chief fire officer Steve Russell after yesterday’s gale force winds sparked dozens of fires that threatened homes and farms around the district.

Fire crews were spread thin around Mid Canterbury as they tackled blazes in Ealing, Hinds, Pendarves, Lowcliffe, Ashburton and Bankside.

A fire that surrounded a house saw

police close State Highway One from the Rakaia River Bridge through to Bankside after smoke from the blaze severely reduced visibility on the road.

Strong winds also affected visibility for firefighters and emergency services and caused the fire to move rapidly.

Rakaia firefighter Tyrone Burrowes said the fire had jumped across the road and destroyed several sheds and buildings near the house.

Ashburton and Willowby firefighters spent several hours dampening

down hotspots at a Boundary Road farm after multiple piles of hay and a silo caught fire.

Ashburton crews also attended a vegetation fire on Windermere Road in Hinds after a pit fire escaped and set a gorse hedge alight.

The wind caused havoc for motorists after it whipped up dust storms that all but wiped out visibility in some areas.

Insight into human evolution Early chimp-like ancestors of humans were better at upright walking than previously thought, scientists have found. The US research analysed the independent motions of the hips, lumbar and thorax in modern chimpanzees and humans, concluding that there were similarities in the way they rotated their bodies when walking. The scientists found that the direction of a chimp’s upper body alignment during a stride was different to humans, but the extent of their movements relative to the pelvis were almost identical. They also said the main difference between the movements was that chimpanzees rotated their pelvis more than humans.

Key in secret Iraq visit Prime Minister John Key has just flown out of Iraq after a secret visit to the New Zealand troops at Taji Military Camp - a dramatic two days in a place Mr Key described as “goddamn awful”. Mr Key’s trip to meet the New Zealand troops in Taji was kept under wraps until after he left Iraq early yesterday morning for security reasons. The trip was nearly jeopardised by dust storms grounding aircraft. They delayed his visit by a day and almost left him marooned in the military camp in one of the world’s hottest conflict zones for an extra night. His trip was months in the planning and a small group of media including the New Zealand Herald, accompanying him were required to keep it confidential until he had left the war zone. During the visit Mr Key and his entourage, as well as the media, were protected by a team of about 20 elite SAS troops, who have not been deployed in Iraq. About 106 New Zealand troops are based alongside 300 Australian personnel at Taji to train Iraq security forces. Mr Key is the first leader of the coalition countries based at Taji to visit the base since the United States moved back in to help Iraq battle Islamic State in 2014.

Mr Key visited to see first hand the conditions the troops were working in and fulfil his promise to visit when he announced that deployment in February.

Toyota unveils self-driving car Toyota has unveiled a car that can drive itself along a highway, the latest foray by a major manufacturer into the world of automated vehicles. The car, a modified Lexus GS, uses sophisticated sensors to navigate roads, merge lanes and overtake other vehicles. The company hopes to make other cars with similar features available within five years, in time for Tokyo’s hosting of the Olympics.

“We aim to be operational by 2020, the year when Tokyo welcomes the Olympic Games,” Yoshida Moritaka, Toyota’s chief safety technology officer, told reporters at the car’s unveiling. In its current incarnation, the car only switches to fully automated mode once it reaches the less frenetic confines of a highway and passes a sensor. “The car we have here is able to drive independently from the highway entrance to the exit,” Moritaka said.

But Toyota hopes the technology will help it one day build an entirely driverless car as well as reduce accidents and congestion.

Record summer visitors?

A record 2.23 million visitors are expected to travel in and out of New Zealand during December and January, the government says. Customs Minister Nicky Wagner says that’s a 4.5 per cent increase compared with last summer and about 75 per cent of the visitors will go through Auckland Airport.

“Air passenger volumes are expected to grow by more than 22 per cent in the next five years and the government is investing more than $NZ6 million ($A5.48 million) in faster, new generation SmartGate processing technology,” she said yesterday.

Customs has started training 21 recruits who will be on duty at Auckland Airport in time for the summer peak.

Mercury climbs in Ashburton

Ashburton recorded the highest temperature for the country on Tuesday, according to the MetService.

However, just how hot it got on the day varied depending where in Ashburton the temperature was recorded.

The town’s digital clock on the Heartland building on East Street broadcast a temperature of 30 degrees in the afternoon, Graham’s Weather Station at Netherby recorded a maximum of 30.4 degrees, while the Ashburton Domain weather station recorded a maximum of 29 degrees.

These all compare to the MetService’s recording of 27.9 degrees, which is the reading from its weather station at the Ashburton airport.

It was the highest MetService reading on the day for the country, with Christchurch second on 27.7.

MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray said temperature readings, like rainfall, were subject to microclimate conditions.

Ashburton District Council horticultural co-ordinator Rhonda Gallagher said the domain’s readings were taken at

the domain weather station in an open area of the park. It took accurate readings, which were submitted to NIWA every month, and the station had to meet certain standards.

Graham Taylor of Graham’s Weather Station said his temperatures often differed from the readings at the airport taken by the MetService.

He believed both stations accurately gave the temperature for their location.

His high quality Davis 6152c weather station was in a shaded area on Netherby’s Bridge Street, and he double-checked readings with a manual thermometer. However, the fact it was in a sheltered area could account for the difference.

ElectraServe domestic electrician David Watson has been servicing the Heartland Bank town centre digital clock and thermometer for the past 15 years. He said its reading was probably boosted by the fact the temperature sensor was located on the exterior of the building, so received heat from surrounding radiating surfaces.

“It’s just an indication, that’s all,” Mr Watson said.

Winds and fire wreak havoc across district From P1 Police advised motorists to avoid State Highway One near Dunsandel and Rakaia yesterday afternoon after reduced visibility made driving conditions “extremely dangerous”.

Warning signs were erected at the Rakaia Bridge, urging driv-

ers to take care behind the wheel and reduce their speed.

The Ashburton District Council released an advisory late yesterday afternoon warning that the high winds were causing dust storms in areas such as Hinds and Rakaia.

Motorists were advised to

take extreme caution travelling on the open roads and not to light any outdoor fires, while power outages were also to be expected.

EA Networks staff were hoping for winds to ease as the working day drew to a close.

About 300 residents lost

power in the Hackthorne area at about 3.15pm, while about 20 lost power in the Rangitata Gorge.

Network manager Brendon Quinn said about 4.30pm that power had been restored to some consumers at Hackthorne, with the remainder to be restored

shortly. Strong winds had led to damage of a cable termination.

In the Rangitata Gorge two old power poles, which had been due for replacement in a line rebuild, had broken in the wind.

Linesmen were to replace the poles and it was hoped power would be restored last night.

Students vacate campus

Former Ashburton resident and University of Otago student Rebecca Armstrong believes the country needs to be better prepared to deal with threats.

Her comments follow gun threats made to Otago, Massey and Victoria universities yesterday.

A threat was posted on the online forum 4chan relating to Otago University on Tuesday morning and both Massey and Victoria universities discovered threatening notes which led to the partial closure of both campuses.

Miss Armstrong said she was concerned at the general level

of security around the country’s education facilities.

“On a regular day anyone would be able to come onto campus, into the library or class and act on a threat like the one that was made, especially at university,” she said.

While threats are not common place in New Zealand, Miss Armstrong said it did not seem as though the country was prepared.

Former Methven resident and third year psychology student Francis Sandys was on campus at Otago yesterday and said while there was an increased security presence, he believed New Zealand high schools and universities were vulnerable when it came to

threats. “They are probably less prepared because of the low likelihood of this stuff happening in New Zealand,” he said.

As a result of the threat Mr Sandys said the library and lecture theatres were empty.

“Plenty of people have openly expressed their desire to skip university for the day,” he said.

Another former Ashburton resident, Nikita Quinn who is studying towards a post graduate health-science degree said she studied from home yesterday.

A spokesperson for Otago University said the security and safety of staff and students was taken seriously and the university had “arguably the highest 24/7 presence of

Jumble for Jamboree is being organised by the Methven Girl Guides who are fundraising to attend a pre-jamboree camp in November. This camp is a lead in to the jamboree which will be held in the Canterbury A&P showgrounds in January.

Police responding to a bomb threat at Victoria University’s campus in Wellington have found nothing suspicious. The Murphy Building was evacuated yesterday after a note threatening the detonation of a bomb in the building was discovered. Police said they took such threats seriously and evacuated the building while a thorough search of the area was undertaken. Police confirmed shortly after 1.15pm that no suspicious items were found.

Investigations into identifying the person who made the threat will continue.

Groups from around Ashburton are getting their thinking caps on about the future of the town’s library.

All schools in Ashburton, as well as the Youth Council, have been invited to share their views and ideas with the Ashburton District Council at this year’s Youth Forum.

Youth Council member Sofia Marilla said it’s a great chance for the youth to have a say.

On November 18, the Youth Council and all participating schools will put their ideas to the council.

Due to conflicting commitments, the Youth Council however will present its ideas in video form.

Not only will the video be presented to council, it will also be available to view on the group’s Facebook page.

The Youth Council has already had a busy year, which began with the members redefining themselves as a group.

As a result the Youth Council altered its mission statement to focus on youth striving for positive change.

To further extend its reaches, four members of the Youth Council will head to Hanmer this week to meet up with other councils and share feedback and ideas.

Campaigners against sexual violence were likely to cross the paths of porn actors in Auckland’s Queen St with the return of the Boobs on Bikes parade yesterday.

The parade used to promote the sex-related businesses of Steve Crow was being preceded by a protest march organised by the advocacy group Stop Demand Foundation. It saw the Men Against Sexual Violence group march with sex offender clinicians and a Kaikohe community group take a stand on Queen St at 12.15pm – just 15 minutes before Crow’s porn promotion rode down the street.

Two-car crash A man has died after a two-car crash in West Auckland yesterday.

Police said the driver of one of the cars died after the collision at the intersection of Rata and Rimu streets in New Lynn. It was possible the man had suffered a heart attack before the crash, police said. The police serious crash unit was investigating and was on-site to carry out a scene examination.

Agencies work together

Ashburton community organisations may be taking a more collaborative approach to housing solutions following a meeting with the Ministry of Social Development this week.

The meeting between community organisations, Work and Income managers in Ashburton and Canterbury Housing manager Denise Jackson

was a positive information sharing event, according to Presbyterian Support manager Jackie Girvan.

Government services, emergency housing and social housing were all up for discussion at the meeting.

Finding out exactly what help was available and the best way to access it was particularly helpful, Mrs Girvan said.

“MSD explained what they

did and how it works, and we all felt pretty confident about what they told us,” she said.

It was likely that some local organisations would begin to work more closely together to find solutions. “It’s a tricky thing, this housing, there’s so many aspects to it,” she said.

“I think what this has done is brought some organisations together to look at it, which is positive, instead of us all just

carrying on in our own little sphere.”

Ashburton Citizen’s Housing Sub Committee chairman Gordon Mockford described the meeting as “very good”, and said it would open the door for organisations to work together and find solutions.

“Some people don’t realise how little some people have to live on,” he said. “We try to help as best we can.”

10-10-10 Walk for Kids hopes to raise awareness

Child’s Play Preschool is banding together with the Lions Club to help children who cannot walk.

Staff, parents and children from the preschool are walking this weekend in honour of Jaxon Smith, a four-year-old Ashburton child with a complicated neurological condition that means he is unable to walk.

Jaxon has cerebellar hypoplasia which is an incurable condition that affects muscle tone and strength. It can also affect speech, walking and balance and result in seizures or intellectual disability.

Lions Club of Ashburton president Helen Allan said anybody who wants to join in is welcome to meet at the Lake House before 10am on Saturday, for the 10km walk.

Traditionally people get sponsored per kilometre but donations are also welcome, she said.

Organised by the Lions Club of New Zealand’s Child Mobility Foundation the 10-10-10 Walk for Kids was designed to help raise not only money, but awareness, for children who cannot walk.

The foundation helps to fit kids with a bracing system known as a Hart Walker which provides hands-free mobility for children.

The walker has many adjustments and as a result can grow with the child.

Lions district mobility coordinator Lorna Inch said so far only one child in Mid Canterbury has needed to be fitted with a walker.

Jaxon has been assessed, she said, and upon his next assessment a Hart Walker will be available if he needs it.

Jaxon’s mum Chelsea Prendergast said she was pleased with the effort the preschool and the Lions were going to.

“It’s awesome that things like this are in place to help kids like Jaxon,” she said.

Jaxon Smith, 4, is a happy little boy that is having to cope with the challenges of a complicated neurological condition.

Otago fire crews battle serious blazes Fire crews are battling serious, uncontained blazes on Saddle Hill, where residents have been evacuated from their homes, and in Dunback.

Both fires were fanned by hot, strong winds throughout yesterday.

The Saddle Hill fire, near Coal Stage Road, started about 1.30pm, forcing the evacuation

of residents from Coal Stage Road and McMaster Road.

Fire crews are fighting at least three separate blazes. At least two homes are understood to be affected.

Otago Rural Fire Authority deputy principal officer Jamie Cowan said the Saddle Hill fire was burning out of control and multiple evacuations were in

progress including Chain Hills Road, Old Brighton Road and Morris Road.

There were unconfirmed reports of a house being on fire in Chain Hills Road, Mr Cowan said.

“We have several houses that are immediately threatened by the fire, but I can’t confirm if any houses are destroyed at this

moment.” Two helicopters with monsoon buckets were in the sky and five fire trucks were on the scene.

A 30km/h wind has been blowing a plume of smoke from Chain Hill Road to the sea.

Police were advising residents to start packing bags and prepare to leave their homes.

Search for missing 10-year-old continues Fears are mounting for the welfare of a 10-year-old boy who has been missing in the Waitarere Forrest since early on Tuesday morning The increasingly desperate hunt for Alex Fisher continued until dark on Tuesday night and the search resumed yesterday.

So far though there’s been no sightings of the boy, who was reported missing at 4.00am on Tuesday morning, as the southern block of the Waitarere Forrest is combed for signs of him.

On Tuesday night police released footage of Alex with his brother Eric from CCTV images captured at the Waitarere Four Square about 6.15 on Monday evening. It was the last confirmed sighting of the boy.

It is believed Alex went missing from the Waitarere domain that night and his family reported him missing at 4am.

It’s still not known who Alex was with at that time and what he was doing in the area.

While he’s not been seen since, his pencil case and inhaler have been found.

Inspector Sarah Stewart issued a public plea for help, asking for anyone who may have seen Alex with his brother on Monday to come forward.

“We’re also interested in any sightings of them prior to Monday afternoon.”

She said with each passing hour, police grew more worried for Alex.

In a development on Tuesday, a man who is believed to be connected to the disappearance, appeared in the Levin District Court, charged with illegally possessing a knife in a public place, Forrest Rd, Waitarere, on Monday night.

Forrest Rd is where the search for Alex is centred.

The man was given name suppression and will stay in custody until next week.

Later in the day, Alex’s family released a statement thanking rescuers for searching for their “son, brother and cherished family member”.

Funding system slammed

Man found guilty of partner’s murder

Plans to fund schools based on student achievement will put the government on a slippery slope, according to a Mid Canterbury principal.

At a recent PPTA conference in Wellington, Education Minister Hekia Parata told teachers that student achievement would be one of the factors in school funding reviews, which will replace the decile funding system.

While details about how the reviews will be rolled out are scant, the announcement has

raised the ire of both principals and teaching unions.

Mid Canterbury Principals Association president Chris Murphy said there were many different variable that contributed to student achievement, and it was difficult to compare student achievement at schools with a transient roll.

“Having funding related to student achievement is a very slippery slope,” he said.

“The minister and ministry will have to be very careful.”

School would be very interested to see the details when they arrived as part of the con-

sultation process, he said.

Ms Parata said the review of school funding was at a very early stage.

“No decisions have been made as to which variables are included and in what way they’ll be used, but of course student achievement and learning will be one of them,” she said.

“It’s too early to say how it will be included, but sector groups will have input.”

The move has been slammed by the New Zealand Principals’ Federation, with president Denise Torrey saying it was “counter-productive” to with-

draw funding from schools that require more support because they have a higher rate of disadvantaged and challenged learners.

“It is well known that there are more children in low decile areas of New Zealand who arrive at school ill-prepared for learning,” she said.

“We cannot expect that these children will achieve at the same rate as children from advantaged backgrounds and some children with severe special learning needs may never reach whatever target the Minister sets for achievement.”

Business shows support for Rugby World Cup Their office may be decked out in Springbok colours, but the team at Vision Insurance are firm supporters of the All Blacks.

The West Street business has taken out a Guardian competition that challenged businesses to show their support for the Rugby World Cup team they were allocated in a random draw.

The Vision Insurance team drew out the South Africans, and quickly set about draping their office in the country’s national colours.

Managing director David Rush said despite the decorations, the staff were backing the All Blacks.

“We thought we’d get behind it, it’s a bit of fun,” he said.

Businesses and families around the district have been getting behind the Rugby World Cup, showing their support through decorations and flags.

However while many people have been backing their home nations by flying their flags proudly, one England fan showed their disappointment in the team’s early exit by flying the English flag at half-mast.

After hearing eight weeks of evidence it took a jury just four-and-a-half hours to find a Northland man guilty of murdering his partner by running her over in his car.

The jury of six men and six women retired about 11.30am on Tuesday and returned at 4pm to deliver their guilty verdict.

During the trial they heard how Villiami Fungavaka, 47, drove his vehicle over Georgina Manuel, 28, twice in Kaitaia in August 2013. She died the next morning, after being flown to Whangarei Hospital.

Evidence was given that Fungavaka was seen striking Ms Manuel with his 1.7 tonne Holden commodore as she stood on Pukepoto Road, Kaitaia, then doing a U-turn to run over her as she lay on the road.

Crown Prosecutor Bernadette O’Connor told the jury, Fungavaka and the victim’s relationship was volatile and Fungavaka intentionally ran Ms Manuel over after an argument.

She told them medical evidence proved both a brain injury likely to have been caused by the first time she was first hit, and a liver injury, likely to have been caused the second time, were serious enough to kill her.

“If you’re sure he deliberately ran her over at least one of the two times - he’s guilty,” Ms O’Connor said. Defence lawyer Greg Bradford has maintained throughout the trial that what happened was an accident. Ms Manuel had stepped in front of the car and it was dark.- NZME

But in advice she dispensed online to parents facing similar problems, she also said her son had learned to cope with his condition and expressed confidence that he could lead a successful life. The shooting at Umpqua has revived the debate on gun control in the United States and prompted an angry reaction by President Barack Obama who urged MPs to revisit the issue.

Finding El Faro survivors ‘unlikely’ The US Coast Guard is still searching for survivors of the El Faro cargo ship sinking, but has warned that “every passing hour” reduces the likelihood of finding alive any of its 33 crew members.

Coast Guard officials on Monday said the ship was believed to have sunk in the At-

lantic and that human remains had been identified in one survival suit found in the ocean.

“This is still an active Coast Guard search and rescue case,” Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios said.

“With every passing hour it does become more difficult to bring home survivors but at

this time the important thing is that we are still searching.”

The 225-metre El Faro, which was carrying 28 Americans and five Poles, lost contact last week en route from Florida to Puerto Rico as Hurricane Joaquin approached the Bahamas.

South Africa’s parole review board has blocked Oscar Pistorius release from prison just 10 months into his fiveyear sentence for killing his girlfriend.

The review panel decided this week that an earlier decision by the parole board to allow the 28-year-old paralympian star out on house arrest was “premature” and referred the case back for reconsideration.

“The parole review board also directed that the offender be subjected to psychotherapy in order to address criminogenic factors of the crime he committed,” the review board said.

Pistorius was sentenced last year to five years in prison for killing model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.

He was found guilty of culpable homicide after saying during the trial that he shot his girlfriend through a locked bathroom door because he mistook her for an intruder. The delay in his release means Pistorius will likely still be behind bars on November 3, when prosecutors appeal to South Africa’s supreme court for a murder conviction and a harsher sentence.

Pistorius was due to leave prison in August until Justice Minister Michael Masutha made an intervention and the case was referred to the review panel.

Lawsuit against Cosby A 25-year-old model has filed a lawsuit against disgraced US comedian Bill Cosby alleging he sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 2008.

According to the civil complaint

by Chloe Goins, Cosby spiked her drink during a party at the famed mansion and she woke up naked in a bed to find him licking her toes and masturbating. Goins, who was 18 at the time of the alleged crime, is among about 50 women who claim that Cosby, over a period spanning four decades, drugged them and then sexually assaulted or raped them. The statute of limitations prevents most of the women from taking legal actions.

Landslide hits 161 The death toll from a landslide that devastated a Guatemalan village has risen to 161 as emergency workers continue pulling bodies from the mud. The search for victims of the landslide, which tore through the village of Cambray II after heavy rain, resumed with the help of a Mexican team with trained rescue dogs, said Sergio Cabanas, head of the government’s disaster response programme. Hopes of finding survivors are growing increasingly slim, he said. Emergency workers pulled 19 bodies from the debris yesterday, Cabanas said.

I

f the threat of a mass shooting at a New Zealand university has shown us anything, it’s that we are not as removed from the rest of the world as we once thought.

News that an anonymous user had taken to an online forum to threaten a mass shooting at the University of Otago was greeted with shock and horror this week.

Police and university staff moved quickly to alleviate fears and bolster security, but the Dunedin campus remained eerily empty yesterday as worried students chose to study from home.

Former Ashburton residents studying at Otago said they were remaining vigilant as police tried to track down the person responsible. One said she was not confident in the security of New Zealand universities.

Mass shootings at schools and universities are, sadly, all too common in the United States.

This week alone, nine people were killed at an Oregon university before the gunman turned his weapon on himself.

The threat of something similar happening closer to home came as a surprise to many Kiwis, but perhaps it shouldn’t have.

Despite New Zealand’s geographical isolation, our tiny, relatively safe country is still just as vulnerable to the acts of madmen as any other nation.

As such, maybe it’s time we looked at upping our security procedures to reflect the changing nature of the threats we face.

In situations like the one faced this week, it is important not to panic.

Police have been working hard to ensure the safety of students and catch the gutless, anonymous user who made the threat.

However, while the response needs to be proportionate to the incident, the threat should prompt, at the very least, a review into campus safety across the country.

It’s important not to overreact - nobody wants to see metal detectors at the entrance to every building.

However an increasing awareness of our own vulnerability may not be a bad thing.

he silly season (SS) is upon us. Funny how it seems to creep up earlier each year, but when the PM and his Defence Minister, the redoubtable Gerry Brownlee, become deeply involved in the dark arts of panda diplomacy you know it really is “that time of year again”.

Yes, not only does JK (John Key) want a new flag - and many feel that is certainly an issue that fits comfortably into the SS category as well - he also wants a panda “parachuted” into the Wellington Zoo. As with the flag ($26 million) the cuddly Chinese bear does not come cheap though our revered leader makes light of the cost which he claims will be “only $10 million”.

On top of that there will, of course, be the expense of keeping the little chap - on his way to becoming a very big chap, a “Giant”, in fact - in the style to which he has become accustomed in his luxurious Beijing pad.

That will involve ultra nutritional fare as well as the importation of a keeper who speaks the same language as the ursine mammal so can be relied upon to tend to its every whim.

Once established, the GP (Giant Panda) will be on the look-out for a mate, who will no doubt be provided for him - the most alluring female panda money can buy - so that his breeding potential as well as his pleasure may be fully exploited and catered for.

The Wellington Zoo’s closely-knit community is said to be “overjoyed” by the prospect of housing such a mega star attraction.

I imagine the PM is confident of their votes in 2017.

“Silly” or not, the flag debate has now become slightly less frivolous with the intervention of Green MP, Gareth “Baby Face” Hughes, who has joined the party by offering to use his political services to have the “red peak” (RP) design added to the options for the forthcoming referendum.

The Labour Party, having comprehensively painted itself into the proverbial corner over this issue, had no wriggle room to respond to the surge in popularity of this latest design and National was not too sure either of the direction in which it wanted to go.

Mr Hughes’ sensible suggestion was welcome. Thus the deed is done and we shall now be able to vote for RP if we so desire.

Personally, I shall not be availing myself of the opportunity despite its being so hard-won. To me, it seems to have very little obvious relevance to the country and will leave foreigners completely in the dark as to its origins.

If we want something to underscore “Brand New Zealand”, it is impossible to go past the Kiwi. Dare I say it, it is yet another “No Brainer”, and aren’t there a lot of them around at the moment?

What really is significant about Mr. Hughes’ involvement

is that it showed for probably the very first time, the Green Party pushing aside the blinkers for a day or two and coming to the assistance of the “hated” National Party.

They might now be prevailed on to do the same for some other matter thereby hinting that after years and years of hammering their heads against the most stubborn of brick walls there is an alternative which might actually bring them appreciation in the country at large.

It’s a lesson well-learnt by the Maori Party who realised years ago that to stick constantly to principles that had no political appeal was counter-productive.

Meanwhile, a number of very sleep-deprived people in Atlanta have now come to an “agreement” over the TPPA, The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, for which our inexhaustible Trade Minister, Mr Tim Groser, has laboured to the point of

complete burn-out.

He is of the firmest of firm opinions that the abolition of tariffs throughout the region will bring inestimable benefits to Aotearoa even if the agreement still leaves one or two “loose ends”.

It is a view shared not only

by PM John Key but also - and highly significantly - by his predecessor, Helen Clark, who stood side-by-side with her old rival and explained how vital it was for NZ to be included in this new grouping.

The endorsement of such a global personality, possibly even the next SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations should have allayed the fears and doubts of even Ms Kelsey as well as those of many of her followers.

The proof of the pudding will, as ever, be in the eating, and the agreement has still to be ratified by all governments, the U.S. Congress in particular, but I don’t think there will be any turning back now.

Offer still on the table

BY JAMIE GRAY A group of Silver Fern Farms shareholders who oppose the company’s proposed joint venture with Shanghai Maling Aquarius said their offer of a $90 million alternative capital raising proposal remained a live issue just days before it goes to the vote.

Activist shareholders in Dunedin-based Silver Fern Farms have urged farmers to vote against Shanghai Maling’s offer to inject $261 million into the company, which would make it debt free, so that the alternative proposal can be considered.

One of the shareholders behind the alternative capital raising, Clinton farmer John Cochrane, said the company was in better shape than many had understood, and that an alternative capital raising, through an underwritten rights issue, was a viable option. The

Chinese joint venture goes to the vote on October 16.

Last month, South Island businessman John Rodwell said a number of agribusiness companies had clubbed together with an offer to underwrite a rights issue aimed at Silver Fern’s farmer shareholders.

Rodwell said yesterday the offer remained. “Nothing has changed from my point of view,” he said. “The company wished to pursue a rights issue and it required some or all of that to be underwritten, and that capacity still exists,” he said.

Supporting documentation surrounding the Shanghai Maling proposal pointed to a company firmly on the rebound after suffering the effects of collapse in sheepmeat prices in 2013 and that was making serious inroads into its debt.

The rural property Scott Guy and his brother-in-law Ewen Macdonald once farmed together is up for sale.

Scott Guy was shot dead in his driveway up the road in July 2010. Macdonald, his brother-in-law, was acquitted of his murder but remains in jail for other offences.

Scott’s parents Jo and Bryan Guy are now putting the Feilding farm on the market.

The pair are not yet sure what they’re next move will be as they prepare to wave goodbye.

“We were going to have a plan before we sold it, but we haven’t got that plan,” Bryan Guy said.

“We’ve been thinking about selling for a couple of years now and we have had people approach us about buying the farm, but nothing eventuated from that.

“Really we haven’t got anything at all planned once it’s sold. It’s just a matter of taking a bit of time to reassess.

We want to spend a bit more time with the family but also do a bit of travel of travel if we can.”

Macdonald’s ex wife - has just joined.

“We’ve still got a lot of energy and feel we don’t want to curl up and do nothing,” Bryan Guy said.

The family farm, off Aorangi Road, is made up of two properties totalling about 260 hectares. Bryan Guy’s parents, Grahame and Winifred, started out about 50 years ago on a 24 hectare section.

He joined a partnership with them for about 25 years, before buying them out at the turn of the century. Over time, the farm grew through acquisitions of surrounding properties.

By 2010, Scott Guy and Macdonald and their wives were shareholders in the Byreburn business and were likely to take it over completely some day.

One of the houses up for sale is formerly occupied by Macdonald. The house along Aorangi Road that Scott Guy shared with his family was sold previously.

Bryan Guy said he didn’t think the property’s provenance would put people off.

“I wouldn’t have thought so but it might to some people I guess. We’re so used to it that we don’t really consider it an issue.”

Christie profits from property

BY MATT NIPPERT One of the brains behind The Block NZ has proved it’s not just the reality show’s contestants who can profit from property.

Mediaworks director Julie Christie bought a vacant section on Auckland’s North Shore used for the 2013 series for $380,000 in December of that year.

In yet another example of Auckland’s booming property market, she sold the 451-square metre site - complete with fully fitted family home - for $1.48 million in August this year.

The history of the property, on Eversleigh Road in Belmont, was uncovered by The Spinoff website.

During filming it was used to house temporary offices for staff from Touchdown, the show’s production company.

Christie stood down from the Touchdown board in July 2013 after selling her shares to Dutch company Eyeworks in 2006.

Eyeworks sold the site to an entity called MACA Trustees No.1 in December 2013.

Seven months later it had a rateable valuation of $580,000.

Christie revealed she was the beneficial owner in a video on MediaWorks gossip site Scout.

In the video she said she built a 175 sqm house on what she described as a “very small” section.

“I made an offer for the land - a very small section on a very busy road,” she told Spinoff.

Calls to MediaWorks seeking comment from Christie have yet to be returned.

The Block NZ pits four couples against each other as they renovate properties. The couple that makes the most profit at auction keeps the money.

Use water wisely this summer

An early start to the irrigation season will require careful water management to get through what is shaping up to be a long, hot summer, a hydrologist says.

With no sign of rain on the horizon Tony Davoren said Mid Canterbury farmers should be turning the irrigators on now, but will need to be vigilant and make the right decisions to maximize efficient use of their water allocations.

“The outlook for the next 10 days will follow what we’ve seen over the past couple of days,” Dr Davoren said.

“The equinox is the real season changer in Canterbury, once we get past that point everything starts to stack up, the days get longer, solar radiation is increasing, soil temperatures come up.”

Dr Davoren is anticipating the forecast El Nino could be as harsh as that of 1997-98, and the pattern will strengthen as the season progresses.

And a lack of rain over winter will compound matters.

“We haven’t had as much recharge in the aquifers as we would like – we are starting not much above where we finished

last season,” he said.

“We are starting where we did 2005-06, which is a good yardstick, because we started that season with low water levels.

“We depend on the big easterly south-easterly rainfall events to recharge the aquifers for irrigation water because we haven’t had those we could have some very marginal groundwater supplies.”

On the upside, El Nino should produce more rain on the West Coast which is good news for irrigators using water from the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers.

The bigger rivers will also benefit from a better snow pack over the winter, Dr Davoren said.

But the news isn’t good for farmers using water from the Ashburton River, and the Hinds River is “barely flowing”.

“We are not up the creek at the moment but we need to be vigilant – I’m anticipating water demands will be higher preChristmas than they have been for the past two or three years.

“Last year irrigation only really kicked in about the third week of December.

“We’re starting a lot earlier and the demands are going to be a lot higher because of the current weather patterns.”

Fourth consecutive price gain Dairy prices posted their fourth consecutive gain at the GlobalDairyTrade auction yesterday morning, with the GDT price index rising by 9.9 per cent since the last sale in mid-September, driven mostly by an ongoing recovery in milk powder prices.

Key wholemilk powder prices – responsible for about 75 per cent

of Fonterra’s farmgate milk price – were up 12.9 per cent to an average US$2824 a tonne, having rallied by $1234 or 77.6 per cent since hitting a record low of $1590 a tonne in early August.

rom outside, the new Toyota Prado could easily be mistaken for last year’s model, but there’s lots of new stuff, both under the bonnet and within the cabin.

There is a new 2.8-litre turbodiesel and six-speed auto, both of which will also be used in the soon-to-arrive, new HiLux range as well as the Fortuner SUV. This new high pressure, direct-injection four-cylinder engine, although smaller, has slightly more power (130kW), but more importantly 40Nm more torque, for a total of 450Nm, all of which is present between 1600-2400rpm.

Technical niceties include a timing chain instead of a timing belt, a lower 15.6:1 compression ratio, increased combustion and thermal efficiency, plus an additional high pressure fuel filter.

This engine is Euro 5 compliant, and Toyota says 8.0 L/100K overall is possible.

It’s also much quieter than before.

Expectedly from a cold start it’s still apparent that it’s a diesel, but this is soon forgotten, for it soon becomes quiet during around-town driving, while at cruise it’s all very hushed.

From standstill acceleration is brisk rather than fast, and in all situations, whether on the flat or climbing, the new six-speed auto, with its pretty much subliminal shifts, makes good use of the available torque.

Our brief 40km drive, complete with the boat and trailer, indicated it is well equipped (there’s trailer sway control) and suitable for towing.

as driven, and progresses equipment-wise to the mid-range VX (also a 4 litre V6 petrol option for this) and the flagship VX Limited.

All of these come with the gear necessary to preserve Prado’s reputation and position at the heavy duty end of the town and country market.

All have constant four-wheeldrive, a central limited slip diff with lock and high and low ratios (selected via a rotating switch on the centre console).

ROAD TEST

The market now dictates they must also be very good on road and able to front up with the best at school drop-off zones, so they need to be well dressed inside.

No problems in this respect with the entry level GX, for although it has black cloth, rather than the heated leather and extra gear of the VX models, its cabin ambience and equipment is very good.

Handling proved to be remarkably neutral for one so tall, whose underpinnings are built to cope with third world conditions, so you naturally don’t expect it to drive just like a car-derived SUV does.

Yes there is some body lean when pushed through open road corners, but it’s predictable, and I rather enjoyed all corners and hills during our 500km expedition, where the constant fourwheel-drive really showed its benefits in all driving conditions.

Around town, given its size, was impressively easy to drive, and park. The steering is light with a very good turning circle, plus there’s rear parking sensors and a reversing camera with static guidelines.

East West have only 23 high card points between them and West’s Heart Q could have no value at all. However, their Spade suit is rock solid when both defenders follow to the 1st trump trick.

East will be the first to bid Spades and very quickly be in game contract needing 10 tricks.

South, for the opening lead, will play his Club A and then switch to a Heart.

Do you see what will happen if he carelessly leads a Diamond at his 2nd lead?

Dummy’s Q or J will hold the trick and East will have no Diamond loser, making 11 tricks instead of 10! A happy outcome for declarer, but not so for the defence.

As long as a Heart is the 2nd lead from South, (or a trump for that matter) North South must make 2 Club tricks and 1 Diamond trick for the defence.

East has the luxury of plentiful trumps in both hands and distribution allows him to trump his side suit losers at leisure.

The Mayor responded by email to a question regarding the blue rubbish bags now available as follows “the black bags are rubbish bags and a bundle of 5 sell for $11 the blue bags are only for recycling for Rakaia residents and sell for $3.50 for a bundle of 5.”

Hakatere/Ashburton U3A On September 23, Dr Glenn Vallender presented an entertaining and informative talk on aspects of Canterbury’s geology where he took the audience of around 78 members and visitors on a 500 million year journey looking at the geology of the Canterbury Plains, Mt Somers and the Lyttelton Volcanic Complex.

Amongst many other things, we learnt that Mt Somers is not a single volcano on the edge of the foothills but is part of a large volcanic field born when Zealandia began to drift away from Gondwana some 97 million years ago.

We now know that the Lyttelton Volcanic Complex was built from many cones that joined together and helped control the direction of erosion and the formation of the Lyttelton valley which eventually formed Lyttelton Harbour. It was great to be brought up to date with the latest research on the formation of these

Tinwald Garden Club Due to bad weather, the bus trip on September 24 had to be postponed

until Thursday, October 8. So a meeting was held in the Tinwald Hall, but no competitions were staged. However, the two minute talk was presented by Joan Campbell, who spoke of the changes in her life.

After this we were entertained by Daphne Allison who showed photos and told us about gardening competitively in the Garden Competitions, and running their own garden nursery for many years. This

was very interesting and many handy tips were given out.

Otago on mission to bag home semi

Busted Wallabies face injury change-ups

Otago’s slim hopes for a home semifinal were always going to be enhanced by an encounter with one of the worst sides in provincial rugby history.

And so it proved in Whangarei last night as Northland’s porous defence shipped eight more tries and slumped to a ninth straight defeat in the ITM Cup Championship.

The win edged Otago closer to secondplaced Wellington with just this weekend’s action to come, maintaining the narrow possibility of hosting a semifinal in Dunedin. Otago require a bonus-point victory over Bay of Plenty on Sunday and need Manawatu to upset Wellington, otherwise they will travel to the capital and face the Lions in the final four.

As for Northland, their place at the bottom of the standings had already been confirmed. The Taniwha now have one last chance – a trip to North Harbour on Sunday – to avoid becoming the first side since 2007 to progress through an ITM Cup campaign without a win.

Cricket greats tour Cricket greats Shane Warne of Australia and Sachin Tendulkar of India will captain opposing teams of former star players in a threematch exhibition tour of the United States next month. The Cricket All Stars tour will feature short-format Twenty20 matches in New York, Houston and Los Angeles starting Nov. 7 at Citi Field, home to Major League Baseball’s New York Mets.

Also playing on the tour are former test captains Ricky Ponting of Australia, the West Indies’ Brian Lara, Wasim Akram of Pakistan and England’s Michael Vaughan, as well as South African Jonty Rhodes and cricket’s record wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka.

Courtney heartbroken It broke his heart to hear it. But V8 Supercars star James Courtney has revealed his heart could have been crushed - literally - if he had defied doctor’s orders and contested Sunday’s Bathurst 1000.

As expected, 2010 V8 champ Courtney was forced to withdraw on Wednesday from the great race.

He failed to recover from five broken ribs and a punctured lung suffered in a freak pitlane accident during August’s Sydney round.

Courtney hopes to return to racing as soon as the Gold Coast 600 in a fortnight.

Boy’s hole in one Josh Keating has achieved a feat that eludes most golfers their entire careers. It was a case of fourth time lucky for the 14-yearold golfer after a sub par run to the fourth hole at the Hastings Golf Club. Josh then cracked one down the 145m fairway onto the green and to his disbelief sunk a hole in one. The magnitude of his achievement is not lost on Josh, who only started playing a year ago.

Who will captain the Kiwis?

Who will be the new Kiwis captain?

There seem to be four possible contenders to succeed Simon Mannering as skipper.

This morning the identity of the team’s new leader will be unveiled, and Stephen Kearney has four logical options.

Issac Luke (33 tests) Wears his heart on his sleeve and would be an inspirational leader. Has always wanted to be a Kiwis captain and is still rated one of the best hookers in the world.

Usually plays 80 minutes, which is an advantage. Luke has also captained the Rabbitohs.

However, it’s unsure how suited he would be to the off-field demands of the job.

Adam Blair (31 tests) The Broncos prop is coming off the best season of his career since his days at the Melbourne Storm. Rated highly by Kearney and the pair have had a long association. An experienced international, but may not be a first-choice prop in the starting XII. At 29, is also not a choice for the future.

most permanent fixture during the Kearney tenure. Not flashy, but very effective as a winger and brings his high professional standards to the camp. However, his position on the flank is a disadvantage, as captains tend to need to be closer to the action. The last player to captain the Kiwis from wing was Dane O’Hara in the early 1980s.

a goal attack with another goal shooter,” Taumaunu said.

“Unfortunately, I don’t know that we could have made that work. In the end we had to go with position-for-position and [Latu] understood that.”

Wells’ reselection comes a year after she made her debut for the Ferns following a rapid rise to the national team. The 24-year-old, who grew up in Queensland but has a Kiwi father, made the move to New Zealand late last year. - NZME

Coach not happy with Phoenix preparation Four days out from Wellington Phoenix’s A-League season opener and coach Ernie Merrick is not a happy man.

Barring a few minor niggles, his squad is injury-free and raring to kick-start their season with a home match against Newcastle Jets at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium on Sunday.

But Merrick was left fuming yesterday at the restrictions placed on his team for their first

run at the stadium in months.

“It’s the first time we’re back at the stadium, and we were only given exactly 30 minutes to be in the ground,” Merrick said. “Our first game of the league season, preparing for Newcastle in what will be hopefully a big year for us, and we get 30 minutes on Westpac.

“We’re the major tenant of this venue, it just amazes me.”

Merrick said it was frustrat-

ing to be offered limited familiarisation sessions ahead of the 27-week A-League season, where wins at home are key to making the end-of-season playoffs.

The Phoenix are looking to build on last year’s effort where they led the league for a couple of weeks mid-season, but faltered to qualify fourth and were knocked out by Melbourne City in the first elimination final.

Merrick wasn’t impressed with yesterday’s training session, saying the standard of play his squad managed in their brief time on the pitch left something to be desired.

“This is our home venue, and we’re not used to playing on it. It was a very poor standard game and I think we just weren’t used to the wind, the conditions and the atmosphere in this stadium.”

Few changes expected for ABs

By Gregor Paul The All Black selectors are expected to be true to their word and make minimal changes to their starting side to play Tonga.

There may be a bit of tinkering on the bench and they will have to determine whether leg knocks picked up by Waisake Naholo and Richie McCaw have sufficiently healed, but other than that, it’s hard to see many other changes.

Ma’a Nonu may come in to start for Sonny Bill Williams and win his 100th test cap and the front row could revert to their normal duties of Tony Woodcock and Owen Franks starting with Wyatt Crockett and Charlie Faumuina coming

off the bench.

Continuity is hugely important to the All Blacks at this stage of the competition. The last pool game is an opportunity to tidy up the skill execution, improve the overall timing and snap and build the confidence coming into the crucial part of the World Cup. While the All Blacks are unlikely to reveal everything they have in Newcastle, they will no doubt be keen to put more parts together and play closer to the style they intend to use in the last eight.

While they are not panicking or worried about how they are placed, they would rather deliver a commanding performance against Tonga.

And to do that they need continuity of selection – for the key units and combinations to be kept together as injury allows.

Ideally Naholo will be able to take his spot on the right wing and iron out some of the rustiness that blighted his game in Cardiff. His potential to break open defences and give the All Blacks a point of difference is significant.

He’s short of match fitness and the coaches will be wary if they can’t get him on the park this week as he’ll be so short of rugby that picking him for the quarter-final will carry an element of risk.

That risk being he won’t last 80 minutes which means they know they will be putting their

outside back replacement on early – but there will be a problem if they encounter injuries.

Naholo was sore in the early part of the week after his leg was bruised playing Georgia. He has trained _ although was on lighter duties initially _ and was thought to be a strong chance to get the go ahead.

McCaw is also nursing bruising in his leg after he was forced to limp off near the end of the Georgian test. He’s also thought to have trained this week but hasn’t been running as freely as he would like.

Given what happened at the last World Cup – where he played the entire tournament with a broken foot that was mostly kept secret from even his

teammates – some concern may develop if the skipper doesn’t play at St James’ Park. This is different – there is no hidden injury. If it was a World Cup final, he’d play but there’s no need to have him out there if his leg would benefit from not playing.

The All Blacks hope there are three big games to come. They will need McCaw firing in each if they are going to progress.

The bench may also be affected by the availability of McCaw. If he’s ruled out and Sam Cane starts, it’s probable the coaches will go back to having a specialist lock on the bench.

Beauden Barrett should also come on to the bench and provide a second receiver option later in the game.

Converts play starring roles at cup

By Gregor Paul Rugby purists won’t like this, but three former NRL players are looming large over this World Cup. Sam Burgess, Sonny Bill Williams and Israel Folau have already had a major impact. The latter two will continue to do so and in a different way, so too will the former. Burgess has become the focal point of England’s failed campaign.

Egged on by the English press earlier this year to pick Burgess, head coach Stuart Lancaster is now being pilloried for doing so.

None of this is a surprise as Burgess was always a hospital pass. He switched codes in October last year – giving himself less than a year to successfully convert.

Injury knocked a few months off that and then there was confusion and lack of agreement as to his best position. Bath reckoned he was a blindside, England were thinking midfield.

Any objective assessment of Burgess would have been to say he’s not ready for the World Cup. He hadn’t done enough to warrant selection and yet everyone knew, surely, that the assessment was never going to be objective.

Burgess was the light, Lancaster the moth and once he’d made the decision to include Burgess in the 31, it seemed inevitable that the coach would then pick him for the biggest game in

England’s recent history.

And that’s the problem with high profile, league converts: big money is invested and everyone feels compelled to get value for it. Somehow coaches think that people who have played league professionally are only ever a couple of games from conquering rugby.

Yet they never are. Long serving players who have slogged their guts out for an age, can’t help but be mystified by the fast tracking of league stars.

It wasn’t so different with the All Blacks at the 2011 World Cup. Williams wasn’t quite ready either – but he was a good enough athlete to get by. He’d also been in rugby for three years.

But he generated a bit of ill feeling among his peers – or certainly didn’t fit in the way he does now. It wasn’t necessarily Williams’ fault, but he came with profile and expectation and some of his teammates struggled to equate that with the All Black ethos.

It took Williams another season at least to win universal peer respect and show his true capability.

Folau was good when he first played in 2013, surviving on instinct, professionalism and desire.

He is twice the player now.

Experience and familiarity have allowed him to use his full athletic portfolio.

tories, Williams and Folau are destined to have a major say on who wins this World Cup. Williams is in the best head space he’s been according to the All Black coaches and definitely playing like it. Folau is expected to recover from an ankle injury and be one of the undisputed stars of this tournament.

It always felt like England had

the foresight to see how influential both Williams and Folau were going to be at the World Cup and then opt to try to create their own version in Burgess.

The thinking wasn’t flawed, just the timing. It has taken patience and perseverance to get Williams and Folau to this point. But the knives are out for Lancaster so the impression

will be given that New Zealand and Australia were able to seamlessly transition two of the best from the NRL into their national teams and England weren’t.

Burgess looks like just one more ill-planned, bad idea – further evidence of how far England trail behind New Zealand and Australia.

Morgan loves talking rugby

If you can think of an administrative role within Mid Canterbury Rugby, Colin Morgan has probably done it since becoming Old Boys’ club delegate to the union in 1976.

Most Hammers supporters will know Morgan as the announcer at the Ashburton Showgrounds on match days, but the 70-year-old’s involvement with the union spans almost four decades in positions within junior and senior rugby.

Morgan, who was also in-

volved in writing the union’s 50year history in 1977, has served on the Hanan Shield Committee, been secretary and vice-chairman of the South Island Junior Rugby Council, co-managed the Mid Canterbury under 16 team, served as union chairman and was also a founding member of the rugby supporters’ club.

A born and bred Mid Cantabrian, Morgan’s involvement in club rugby began with the now defunct Old Boys, before moving on to Collegiate when Old Boys and Technical combined.

on the positions he has held over the years and stressed the importance of the game to the local community.

“Rugby has always been part of my life, my son has played over in Spain, for Canterbury and for Mid Canterbury and I have a passion for getting young people involved in team sports,” he said.

Morgan, a life member of the union, spoke passionately of his memories spanning from 1964, when the late Peter Bird scored a try for Mid Canterbury to beat Australia, to the Ranfurly Shield

challenge against Auckland and the progression of current players to the senior side.

In recent years, the Hammers’ success in the Meads Cup stands out for Morgan, particularly the howling nor-wester which carried North Otago fullback Ed Keohane’s kick-off over his own dead-ball line during the 2013 final.

“My position up here (the announcing tower) was commandeered by the television crew,” he said.

“I was sitting in the cab of a combine harvester on the dead-

ball line, still with a microphone of course. It was staggering to see the guy kick off, the wind got it and it flew back between the goal posts.”

Morgan has now been the match day announcer for more than a decade, but was clear that he has no intention of stepping down and even has one eye on the union’s 100 birthday.

“As long as I’m enjoying it and I’m fit enough to get out and about and do it, I’d like to think I’ll still be around in 2027 for the 100th year, I’ll look forward to that,” he said.
