Three primary schools in the Ashburton District have taken a significant roll number hit over the past year, while others have watched numbers climb. Students at the district’s smallest school, Chertsey, dropped by almost 20 per cent over the past year, from 35 at July 31, 2018 to 29 this July. Roll numbers are provided to the Ministry of Education as at July 31 each year and since 2000 Chertsey’s roll has fluctuated widely from a 10 year high of 41 in 2010 to a low of 22 in 2013. Board of trustees chair Fiona McFall was not concerned at the drop in numbers, saying the roll showed a fluctuat-

ing pattern but generally sat at around 29. “We’re relatively happy with where its been over the last 12 months and there are a number of new enrolments for next year,” she said. The school was very much part of its community and in summer its pool became a community hub. Its 21st century roll peak came in 2000 at 54. Ashburton Borough was the other big loser, with a roll drop from 434 in 2018 to 382. The dip had been discussed by the school’s board but it was not a cause for concern, chair Mark Cook said. Hinds School’s roll has dropped from 141 to 126 and the reason for the decline could be laid squarely at the door of the

Ministry of Education, relieving principal Graham Smith said, A rebuild of a classroom had not gone as planned and that had affected Year 7 and 8 students, he said. “A lot of parents opted to go because the facilities were just not there. Now we have the new buildings and we have to get the senior students back. This is a botched project that’s cost the school. The doors are open and we want those lost students because we offer a good Year 7 and 8 programme.”
