THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Pania Rawiri-Shaw has watched the flock of lambs in her front paddock disappear, one by one, night after night. The Fairton woman said she’s been in tears over the theft of the lambs she’d hand-reared and has now installed a range of security measures to stop the on-going thefts. The lambs have been strays and triplets from a family farm that were being bottle-fed. They’ve been disappearing over the past two months, and each time it’s one of the younger lambs that are taken, she said. The lambs are taken singly and always at night. The thefts have also upset

the close-knit Fairton community, as local children had enjoyed watching them in the paddock, Rawiri-Shaw said. “I’d love to hear from anyone who has seen anything or knows of someone who has suddenly acquired a pet lamb.” The police have been notified and they’ve checked her property. On Tuesday night she slept in her conservatory hoping to catch the thieves. She heard noises early morning but couldn’t see anyone. Yesterday morning, however, she found one lamb badly injured and discovered that another had been stolen. “I’m absolutely gutted,” she said. Rawiri-Shaw works at Hannah and Henry’s pre-school and the lambs have

been regular visitors while they are on a four-hourly feeding schedule. “The kids love feeding them and caring for them. It teaches them about nurturing. “They’ve brought a lot of joy to the pre-schoolers,” she said. “I’m pretty devastated and I haven’t told the kids at work the lambs have been stolen. “I feel violated now especially as they were in my yard.” Her paddock is quite open and while Rawiri-Smith thought being visible was a good security strategy, she’s now having second thoughts, believing her lambs were simply too visible to wouldbe thieves.
