Failure to give way blamed
Stern words from Preece
By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A failure to give way has been determined to have caused two of three fatal crashes that have occurred in the Ashburton District this year. Speaking at the Ashburton District Road Safety co-ordinating committee, Mid South Canterbury highway patrol Sergeant Steve Burgerhout said police believed the crashes at the intersection of Mitcham and Hepburns roads and Junction and Coldstream roads had been due to a failure to give way, leading to the deaths of four people.

“Four of the five deaths on our roads this year can all be attributed to a failure to give way,” he said. The confirmation of avoidable accidents, which have resulted in death, adds to the frustration and emotion surrounding the current road toll for the year of 146, the highest the figure has been at this point of the year over the past five years. The first of the fatal crashes locally was a two-car crash that occurred at the intersection of Coldstream and Junction roads just after 10am oan March 4.
The crash claimed the life of 82-yearold Mary Rose Ashfield of Ashburton, who passed away in hospital following the crash. An inspection and case review was carried out on the intersection by the Ashburton District Council and it was deemed unnecessary to upgrade, with scheduled maintenance set to happen in the near future.
