Top award for Community House The efforts of a community determined to put the cold-blooded deeds of convicted killer Russell John Tully behind them was recognised in Ashburton last night when Community House Mid Canterbury won the supreme award at the Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards. Volunteers raised $1.6 million to buy and refurbish the former Work and Income building, where Tully killed two staff and shot another in 2014. The new building is now home to a host of groups and incorporates a memorial area to commemorate the two women who lost their lives. The project was led by a volunteer trust board, who will now represent the district at the national community awards next year.
Last night’s awards were presented by Mayor Angus McKay and Trustpower’s general manager of strategy and growth Peter Calderwood in front of more than 100 spectators, entrant nominators and volunteers. In total, Trustpower gave away over $5000 to various community groups through the awards last night. Trustpower community relations representative Emily Beaton said the volunteers entered in this year’s programme offered a great cross section of nominations, from the Willowby Pool Committee doing their bit by raising over $70,000 to upgrade their community pool, to volunteers at the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society who completed the mammoth job of shifting their collection into a new premises.
“This district really did blow me away – the high standard truly impressed me and it wasn’t an easy job for the judging panel that’s for sure,” she said. “The amount of work being executed by volunteers in this district is incredible, people are really doing their bit and feel a sense of ownership and pride for all areas of the community.” She said the Community House project was a stand-out because they managed to resurrect a building site which was linked with a tragic incident and refurbish it to be a new home for community groups to thrive in.
