A group of 18 Mid Canterbury-based Brazilians ventured to Christchurch yesterday to watch their countrymen do battle with North Korea in the Fifa under 20 World Cup. Maria Marcario (wearing white) said the group had been “so excited” to attend the match and were even more excited by Brazil’s 3-0 win.

Hurt in explosion

An Ashburton man seriously injured when a ferry boat engine exploded in Bali on Friday is expected to recover without requiring surgery on his broken back, his father says. Twenty-eight-year-old Paul Sinclair and his girlfriend Anna Love were on the last leg of a 10-day holiday when the engine exploded beneath Paul, sending him flying and breaking his back. Paul was transferred to a Darwin hospital in Australia’s Northern Territories, in the early hours of yesterday morning, his father Allan Sinclair told the Guardian. Later on Sunday Mr Sinclair and his wife Mary received news that Paul was expected to recover without surgical intervention.

“He has had treatment for the burns but won’t require grafts. His back is fractured and he will be in a brace for a long time, but he won’t need surgery. It could have been an awful lot worse,” Mr Sinclair said. “Anna is okay, she

has some superficial burns but nothing too serious.” While the news on his son’s physical injuries was positive, Mr Sinclair said Paul was still dealing with the emotional trauma. “He still sounds pretty shaken up. He had to climb out from the bottom of the boat through the hole that had been blasted in it,” Mr Sinclair said. “The boat was filling up with water and he had to climb out of there with a broken back or he would have drowned.” At that point no one knew what caused the explosion. “They were sitting on a boat and there was an explosion, they had no idea what had happened or whether they were under attack. People were flying around with broken bones and burns.” Continued page 3
