The innovation just doesn’t stop at the New Zealand Sock Factory. This time the enterprising bunch have put their considerable weight behind the Cure Kids Red Nose fundraiser and have come up with fun masks for children and adults to wear. “We are donating $5 from every Red Nose mask sold directly to

the charity,” factory international sales manager Gabrielle Simpson said. Cure Kids is the largest funder of child health research, outside of the government and we are really proud to be supporting a charity that helps thousands of New Zealanders each year, Simpson said. The decision to get in behind Cure Kids was a collective factory

decision. Each year they have a get together to decide what charity to support. “A representative from every department puts forward ideas at the meeting. This year Cure Kids came up repeatedly, so we went with that.” Charity chosen, the designers then set about putting together prototype masks to show the charity’s powers that be. They wanted

to come up with a mask that children would find fun, practical and comfortable to wear. “I am really proud of what we designed. Having it in adult sizes too, means everybody can wear them.” The New Zealand merino mask also has the added bonus of an antibacterial yarn included. They also have a place where a filter can be added if a child needs an extra

level of protection, Simpson said. As the official Red Nose Day August 31 draws nearer, the Cure Kids ambassadors will be seen proudly sporting the fun NZ Sock Factory masks. Simpson encourages those wishing to support the cause which helps hundreds of thousands of kids each year to visit the NZ Sock Factory website or go into Sparrows.

Rae Magson and Debbie Carter may have broken records for the number of stories they managed to read in one day. As judges in this year’s Ashburton Writers’ Group annual competition, they have read their way through 82 entries, scoring and discussing each one. It’s a job the two women have been doing for 16 and 15 years, respectively and it’s a job they love, but with the huge number of en-

tries this year, plenty of cups of tea were needed to keep their focus sharp. The competition was started by Magson and she’s delighted it’s still running and still attracting large numbers of entries 16 years later. It’s been well supported by a number of schools around the Ashburton District, with entries divided into three age groups – 10 and under, 11-13 and 14-18. Until this year a poetry section was offered, but low numbers saw

this canned and an adult section trialled. The bulk of entries, however, are in the two lower age groups, Magson said. Over the years the trend in popular subjects has changed, but the writing talent has been steady, she said. This year spooky things and horses seem to be hot topics, but perhaps surprisingly, Covid-19 featured in very few, Carter said. What has changed with the years is the quality of punctuation

and spelling, that’s dropped markedly she said. “And computers have given the writers the ability to use a thesaurus and choose a different and bigger word.” The group takes judging the competition seriously, ensuring every entry is read by each judge and scored. The scores are then matched and the entries discussed before winners are chosen. Winners will be presented with their prizes on Wednesday at the Ashburton Museum.

Winter weather may be helping, but the youth of Ashburton are seemingly staying on their best behaviour. Youth aid officer Rob Hooper said the level of work at the moment was manageable. “Winter can often quieten things down but the holidays can bring their own challenges,” he said. “I’ve been busy with a couple of regulars that have been ongoing trying to get them back onto the right track. “In all fairness there is nothing that stands out at the moment.” Hooper said with shorter days and colder temperatures young people were less likely to be getting out-and-about and into trouble, but that it did present some other challenges. “It doesn’t always go away just because it is winter, but there is often less tomfoolery,” he said. “With school time it can be harder to get them out of bed in the morning and that presents its own challenges.” Hooper said he had been surprised at how well behaved the town’s young people had been during and post-lockdown. “Everyone was really well behaved but I was surprised at how good the youth were,” he said. “I thought they would be the ones, if any, to get itchy feet and start doing dopey stuff going around the place but they were really good.”

Air NZ’s non-refund policy ‘not on’ By Sue Newman

Allan McCormick is furious. He’s out of pocket by more than $7000 and he knows there’s no chance he’ll get that money back, but what’s particularly galling, he says is that the organisation owing that money is sitting on a pool of untapped government cash. McCormick knows he’s not alone in feeling aggrieved over Air New Zealand’s non-refund policy on Covid-19 cancelled airfares, but he’s determined he won’t accept his loss without a fight. He, wife Diane and their children and grandchildren made up a party of 10 that had planned a family holiday in Australia. They were due to fly on April 1 but the Covid-19 pandemic put paid to that. McCormick has no argument with closing New Zealand’s borders, but that shouldn’t have left thousands of Kiwis out of pocket, he said. “We paid in November, booked through Amex and now getting a refund is absolutely impossible.” He believes there’s an element of protectionism at play because if had been a fly-by-night business holding onto people’s money, rather than the taxpay-

er-owned national carrier, there would be an outcry. Yes, the family can re-book

before the end of June next year, but the logistics involved in getting every family member able to

travel at the same time meant a re-book could be impossible, he said.

“We’re effectively having to write $7100 off and there’s nothing we can do about it. I don’t know where the hell to go now over this.” He’s angry that Air New Zealand had been given funds by the Government but had not used that to refund out-of-pocket customers. “Use that and pay us back,” he said. Customers who can claim on compassionate grounds are being refunded, with millions paid out each week, but what qualifies as compassionate grounds, McCormick asked. He believes that if his booking had been to the United States, the money would have been refunded under an existing policy guarantee. “I’ve heard of people who were booked to the US and they’ve had a full refund. We were just going to our neighbours and it’s not being refunded. I’ve supported Air New Zealand for years but I’m now losing faith.” It was an injustice that ordinary New Zealanders would end up being the ones who kept the airline in business through forfeiting paid-for airfares. Credits simply didn’t cut it, he said.

School zone speed limits set to be reduced By Sue Newman

It might be the most expensive option, but variable speed zones are likely to be introduced outside schools around the Ashburton District. When the Ashburton District Council reviewed its speed zones, several schools made a pitch to have a blanket 40km/h zone outside all schools, but rather than making that speed

zone permanent, the council is considering installing variable speed limits with signs each school will activate. At the council’s infrastructure services committee meeting on Thursday, councillors will discuss the speed limit options which range from the status quo to a low, permanent speed outside schools. The variable speed option is recommended as the best

School zone speeds are one of a range of changes that will be discussed at tomorrow’s meeting, after a day-long submissions hearing last month. A total of 204 submissions were made on the speed law change proposals. Submitters were also keen to

Covid-19 might have delayed her start in the role, but the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service’s new health promoter is keen to get out and about and learn about the challenges facing the community. Andrae Gold has been in the role for around a month, but would have arrived sooner had it not been for Covid-19 putting the country into lockdown. “I could have negotiated to finish earlier but I carried on working, doing contact tracing for Southern Public Health, which worked out quite well with getting things sorted here,” she said. Gold has had a long career in public health promotion, working in the Nelson/Marlborough area and more recently in Southland as a mental health promoter, but is originally from Canterbury, growing up in Kowai Bush. The chance to move into a more focused area of drug ad-

diction in a smaller geographical area is one that excites Gold. “They are two areas that share similar threads, this is just more focused. “Previously I was based in Invercargill, working from Te Anau to Balclutha, so it will be nice to have a smaller area to cover.” Gold said she was looking forward to not only working in Ashburton, but seeing what issues were present in the district’s smaller communities like Methven, Rakaia and Hinds. Investigating the depth of the methamphetamine issue in the district is a focus for Gold, who is hoping to engage with key stakeholders across the community to build a picture of how the drug is impacting the local community. They are also looking for feedback from the community on alcohol labelling to gauge public opinion on that. She will also be carrying on the existing work that ACADS has been doing, which includes ensuring people have access to

good reliable information ahead of the cannabis referendum in September. “I’ll be out in the community

this week, on Wednesday, with the Rural Women passing on some information,” she said. “It is really important that peo-

ple have access to good information that is easy to understand, even if it is just a top 10 things to understand that can be read quickly. “The worst thing would be for people to be showing up to voting booths without any information.” Gold said she expects there to be more information provided by the Government in coming weeks on the issue, with it being, like so many other things, overshadowed by Covid-19. Other projects ACADS regularly run, like the holiday drink-driving campaign, will remain in place, with another staff member taking over the running of these projects.

A quarter of convicted offenders in the Ashburton District had their community work sentences reduced by an average of 36.5 hours thanks to Covid-19. A total of 290.55 hours of community work was remitted off offenders sentences in the Ashburton District during lockdown, but only a quarter of those on community work sentences were deemed deserving of the credit. Under the Epidemic Preparedness (Epidemic Management– Covid-19–Parole Act 2002 and Sentencing Act 2002) Notice 2020, the Department of Corrections had the ability to remit hours from community work sentences. District manager Toni Stewart said at the time of the lockdown there were 33 people on commu-

nity work sentences in the Ashburton District. “Of those, eight people had their hours remitted during lockdown, an average of 36.5 hours per person, and a total of 290.55 hours,” she said. “Decisions on the credit were made on a case-by-case basis and applied to people who have recently been compliant with their orders.” In line with section 67(a) of the Sentencing Act 2002, no more than eight hours in any week and no more than the lesser of 48 hours in total, or one-third of the sentence imposed, could be remitted. At Alert Level 2, there was a requirement for all New Zealanders to practice physical distancing. Over 100 plus Community Corrections sites nationwide reo-

pened in in phases, with additional measures in place to ensure controlled entry and physical distancing could be maintained. Most people serve their community work sentences in groups and are transported together in vans to their worksites, which meant normal community work activities could not proceed in the usual way. Limited community work activity resumed under Level 2, with strict physical distancing and sanitation protocols in place. When New Zealand moved to Alert Level 1 community work returned to normal operations. “At the time of making the decision to remit the hours, we were not able to determine when community work operations would recommence. Extending the time available for people, who up to this point had been compliant

with completing their hours, would have unfairly penalised them given that they would likely have continued to comply if it had not been for lockdown,” Stewart said. Community work is a low-tariff sentence imposed by the court which requires people to do unpaid work in the community to pay something back for the offence that they have committed. Community work provides people with the opportunity to take responsibility for their offending and learn new work skills and habits. Offenders can be sentenced to between 40 and 400 hours of community work, with the number of hours determined by a judge in court. In accordance with the provisions of the notice, people who

had community work hours remitted are still required to complete a significant portion of the hours that they have been sentenced to, which can be up to 400 hours. “If someone doesn’t comply with their community work sentence, we have a range of options to hold them to account, including an internal sanction or warning, formal breach action (which may result in a further conviction, another sentence, or imprisonment) and making an application to the court to cancel the sentence and replace it with a more restrictive sentence,” she said. “Ideally, we want to see people complete their hours, so we use sanctions and frequent follow-ups to ensure that most community work orders get completed.”

Chan steps up into Ruralco chair Heather Chalmers

Ruralco’s new chair Jessie Chan has clocked up an impressive career portfolio in a relatively short time. Chan’s appointment makes her the first female chair of a major New Zealand agribusiness co-operative. She has been a director of the Ashburton-based rural supplies co-operative for six years, replacing former chairman Alister Body, who has sold his Methven dairy farm and is pursuing broader agribusiness interests. She is also a director on the boards of Ngai Tahu Farming, Alpine Energy and the Bio Protection Research Centre at Lincoln University. Chan said her other roles gave her knowledge and skills she was able to apply to the Ruralco business. “It gives you a breadth of understanding of some of the opportunities and challenges in the primary sector. “The biggest eye-opener has been that every member and farmer is different and how do we provide the goods and services that they need for their business.” Established as the Ashburton Trading Society in 1963, the co-operative now has 3000 shareholders and a discount card accepted nationwide by more than 3000 retailers and service providers. Chan is involved in a dairy farm operation leasing 420 hectares and milking 850 cows at Dorie and she has two sons, Adam, 7, and Noah, 21 months. Growing up in Palmerston North, Chan was not from a farming background, but

PHOTO HEATHER CHALMERS gained some rural experience through her father’s portable saw milling business. “I spent a lot of time as a child on other people’s farms while he milled their small tree holdings.” She gained an honours degree from Massey University in animal science before spending 10 years in Wellington in desk-based jobs for primary sector organisations including the biosecurity ministry, Federated Farmers and Beef + Lamb NZ. Chan, the 2018 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year, said she received a lot of encouragement from other people which led to her taking on governance roles from

a relatively young age. “For Ruralco and other agricultural co-operatives and primary sector bodies we need a good pool of people to come through that start in their 30s in terms of governance training so that when they are in their 40s and 50s they have a wealth of experience that they can apply.” In her 30s, Chan completed the Fonterra governance development programme and has also undertaken other professional development courses. “It’s not a matter of suddenly saying at 50, ‘I’m going to be on a board’ as you have to develop that experience.

“We need to keep that mindset, so we keep those young people coming through.” Ruralco’s board was made up of five shareholder-elected and two independent directors, with its make-up differing from other primary sector co-operatives in that more than half the directors are female. Chan said she had a passion for co-operatives, which served the primary sector well. It was important for co-operatives like Ruralco to keep in mind why they existed and how they added value for members. “It is easy for co-operatives to accidently end up in a structure that they never meant to be. “Co-operatives need to be clear about where they want to go and how they want to get there and set up the structure to meet that.” As well as extending its rural sales nationwide through its online business, Ruralco also aimed to grow both its card business and supplier network. “Suppliers are a critical part of our business and have historically been Mid Canterbury-based. So, the question is how do we grow that supplier base so we can deliver both to members here and elsewhere,” Chan said. Ruralco chief executive Rob Sharkie said the quality of its sales and service meant it was picking up business in other regions traditionally serviced by its rivals. While Ruralco only had three stores, all based in Mid Canterbury, and had fewer members than other rural suppliers, on a per capita basis, it punched well above its weight for its size, Sharkie said.

Incoming international Air NZ bookings on hold The government and Air New Zealand have agreed to manage bookings to ensure New Zealanders arriving home can be safely placed in a managed isolation or quarantine facility. Housing Minister Megan Woods said the airline had agreed to put a temporary hold on new bookings in the short term, as well as looking at aligning daily arrivals with the capacity available at managed isolation facilities. People who had already booked flights with Air New Zealand would still be able to enter New Zealand, subject to availability of quarantine space. Woods said the government was also talking to other airlines about managing flows. “We have seen similar moves in Australia, where passenger numbers into Sydney have been limited following the suspension of flights into Melbourne because of the surge in Covid cases in Victoria,” Woods said in a statement. “They too are having to manage the flow of people into the country to match availability of managed isolation beds. “We are seeing rapid growth in the numbers of New Zealanders coming home as the Covid-19 pandemic worsens. “Our number one priority is

stopping the virus at the border, so everyone must to go into quarantine or managed isolation. The government is also talking to other airlines about managing flows. “The last thing we need are hastily set up facilities to meet demand, so we must have a manageable number of fit-for-purpose, safe facilities that do the job of stopping Covid at the border,” Woods said. Air Commodore Darryn Webb said almost 6000 people were in the country’s 28 managed isolation facilities, and new facilities needed to be “watertight” before they were opened. “Standing up new capacity at the required levels for people to stay in for 14 days of isolation is a hugely complex undertaking; it needs appropriate levels of health and other services nearby, New Zealand Defence Force personnel and extra security to ensure that people are looked after properly and the risk of Covid getting out into the community is minimised.” The numbers of those arriving has continued to increase in recent weeks, with 5697 people currently in managed isolation and quarantine, the government said. More than 26,400 people have been through managed isolation and quarantine since March 26.

Air New Zealand chief commercial and customer officer Cam Wallace said the hold will give the system an opportunity to absorb its current demand. “It’s a little frustrating in some ways,” Wallace said. Wallace said the company is “very hopeful” it will only be a three-week period and the government will expand its ability to isolate returnees. He said, going forward, Air New Zealand will work more closely with the government on managing supply and demand for returnees. “We have been quite surprised with the demand surge we’re seeing.” Wallace said most of the demand for flights home is coming from Australia and the United States. He said many of them are expat Kiwis who’ve recently made the decision to return. Air New Zealand currently has too many customers booked over the next few weeks and will need to move potentially hundreds of bookings back. Wallace said Air New Zealand expects demand for international flights back to New Zealand will continue to grow. “We’re looking at a 20 per cent increase for Air New Zealand ser-

vices,” he said. National Party leader Todd Muller has again described the government’s handling of border quarantine as shambolic. In response to the Air New Zealand announcement, Muller said any New Zealander who wanted to come home should be allowed to return. He said it was the government’s shambolic handling of the border in recent weeks which had put the facilities under pressure. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said freezing new Air New Zealand bookings for three weeks was a better option than putting a cap on arrivals from overseas. Ardern said the number of people looking to return home was increasing and the government has had to juggle that with hotel capacity. She said a good solution has been reached with Air New Zealand. “I wouldn’t call it a drastic step when we look at things like New South Wales, they’ve put a hard cap with no flight any more than 50 passengers and a total of 450 per day. We, this week, will be managing more than that.” The number of people arriving into the country would continue to be monitored over the coming weeks, she said.

They didn’t want city slickers coming anywhere near them. Shaunessey’s activities caused no bother – he was no Al Capone. But then things changed, the elderly parish priest, who himself had enjoyed small tipples provided by Shaunessey especially on such auspicious occasions as the feast day of Eire’s revered patron Saint Patrick, retired and moved away. He had served the parish well and, before his departure, was toasted with some of Shaunessey’s nectar and was given supplies to see him into the future. His replacement seemed to be a pleasant enough young man of the cloth but it soon became apparent he had a slightly stricter outlook on life than his predecessor.

This new young priest decided a few things needed to change, including the production of moonshine and he decided he would be the new broom which sweeps clean, so to speak. He also decided he would start out as he meant to continue and do this by making his thoughts clear in his first Sunday sermon. So after voicing his concerns about moonshine in general and Shaunessey’s products in particular he told his congregation he would give them a demonstration to prove his point. From behind the pulpit he took a jug filled with crystal clear liquid, which he explained was from the stream behind the village, ironically the same source used by Shaunessey. He then took a worm from a tin and dropped it into the water, where it swam around to its heart’s content. The new preacher then took another jug, also filled with liquid, which he said was Shaunessey’s moonshine. He took the worm out of the clear mountain water and

Good air Out of the nine Canterbury air sheds monitored by Environment Canterbury, Ashburton is one of only three to have a clean record for the year. The district’s highest reading came on June 14, at 45mcg of particulate per litre of air. Woolston is the region’s worst at five breaches followed by Washdyke on four. The breach line for clean air is 50mcg.

Two new cases There are two new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand, Health Minister Chris Hipkins announced yesterday. The new cases are a woman in her 20s and a woman in her 30s, both from the same family, who arrived on July 2 from Afghanistan. Both women were staying at the Sudima Hotel in Christchurch. They each tested positive from the tests taken on day three after arrival, Hipkins said. It had been 67 days since the last case of local transmission from an unknown source, Hipkins said.

Visa extension The government is extending temporary work visas by six months for migrants already onshore, Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway announced yesterday. Under the short-term changes, temporary work visas due to expire by the end of 2020 will be extended by six months, and the 12-month stand-down period for migrant workers who were going to have to leave this year will be shifted by six months to February 2021.

People went about their daily business and got on with each other. Everyone knew dear old Shaunessey, like his forebears before him, produced moonshine. In fact, by sourcing ingredients locally he had helped the local economy. It was well known that he took pride in his still and his family recipes using pure water from the local mountain stream. The product was of a standard which would rival, or maybe even better, the spirits produced by the major distillers. Over the years the Shaunesseys had declined substantial offers from the major brewers to avoid disrupting the peaceful surroundings and way of life. This of course pleased the village folk, many of whom vouched for the medicinal qualities of Shaunessey’s products.

A Dunedin student attempting to scratch his eyeballs out has prompted a warning from police around drug use. Senior sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said l police were called to assist St John at a party. A 19-year-old man had taken MDMA and was “trying to scratch his eyeballs out”, he said. The drugs were tested and contained a low amount of MDMA, but a “huge quantity of bath salts”. The man was taken to Dunedin Hospital. Dinnissen said people needed to practise caution when it came to untested drugs, and preferably not take drugs at all. “That’s a huge risk . . . you’re taking your life into your hands by popping pills that aren’t prescription.”

Earthquake wake up A 3.8 magnitude earthquake shook awake many Christchurch residents yesterday morning. The 6.25am quake was centred 15km southeast of Christchurch at a depth of 2km, EQNZ said. Despite it being rated as “light” by authorities, many residents reported it feeling much stronger than that – particularly for those in and around places including Lyttelton, Banks Peninsula and Waltham.

Give me back my money – please I

t’s safe to assume that the word ‘compassionate’ might soon be a word with a very flexible meaning. In its purest sense it means understanding, pity, or sympathy for the feelings of others but, in action, if you want back the money you’ve shelled out for a flight you’ve never taken, it might acquire other shades of meaning. Compassionate grounds are the words our national carrier is using as its yardstick when it decides whether or not to refund money paid for Covid-19 cancelled flights. If you can make a case that strikes pity, sympathy or understanding in an Air New Zealand call centre worker, then your chances of getting your money back rise. If not – forget it. Take the plight of Ashburton’s McCormick family, (see story page 3). They shelled out more than $7000 on airfares for their extended family to travel on a long-awaited holiday to Australia. Covid-19 hit, flights were cancelled and the McCormicks were left out of pocket. They’re not alone. Thousands of other individuals and families have been left holding airline credits they may never be able to redeem. In March Air New Zealand was handed the keys to a $900 million loan to tide it over while our borders are closed. They haven’t touched that yet apparently, but they, like many, many other businesses, have been forced to lay-off staff. So, if they weren’t using that money to keep their staff on hand, what are they going to use it for? Clearly not for refunding their customers. Yes, we’d probably be stuffed if we lost our national carrier, but it appears it’s the ordinary Kiwi who is now propping the airline up. And many of those who have unwittingly invested money in the company through defaulted flights may urgently need that money back to prop up their own lives. Air New Zealand has always had a tough policy on refunds, but we live in exceptional times and it is absolutely unfair that our national airline is not making exceptions of its own, scrapping that policy and handing back the cash.

Are you ready for the upcoming recycling changes? F

rom the start of next month, a little extra care will need to be taken when sorting your rubbish and recycling. Along with the usual clean paper, cardboard, cans and tins, only certain hard plastics will be allowed in the yellow recycling bin. All other plastics and lids will have to go in the rubbish bin. From August 1, bottles and containers that are grades one, two or five will be the only plastic items allowed in recycling. Soft plastics that you can scrunch up in your hand like bread bags, cling wrap, chip packets and frozen vegetable bags will all need to go in the rubbish – even if some of these items have a one, two or five on them. Plastic grades three, four, six, seven and those without a grade at all will also need to go in your rubbish bin, along with all plastic lids. For those who are unsure how to check what grade the plastic is, look for the little recycling triangle imprinted on the plastic bottle or container. If the number inside is a one, two, or five you can put it in the yellow bin. We are having to adjust what is allowed in the recycling bin due

to changes in the global markets that process New Zealand’s plastics. There is nowhere to send these materials for recycling anymore, and the sorting centre in Christchurch that we take our recycling to will no longer be accepting these soft plastics or those numbered three, four, six and seven. So, if you receive the kerbside rubbish and recycling service, it’s important you’re up on the new changes and know which bin to put your plastics in. Information about the changes is being promoted on the radio, in local newspapers and newsletters and on the council’s social media in the lead up to August 1. Very soon, people in the kerbside collection zone will also receive an updated Bin It Right rubbish and recycling booklet in the mail that details how to use the service.

Keep an eye out for this resource, as it will provide helpful information on how to sort your rubbish and recycling correctly. Mid Canterbury has been doing a great job of recycling right these last three years since the

QUICK RECIPE

Butterfly chicken with bread dumplings Serves 4 1 butterfly chicken 1 (300g) stale loaf of white bread or 6-8 white rolls 1C milk 3T parsley 1 onion 1T butter 3 eggs Salt, pepepr and nutmeg ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Season chicken, place on to a roasting tray and into the oven. ■■ Cut the bread into cubes and place into a bowl. Heat the milk and pour over the bread, set aside for 15 minutes to soak. Wash the parsley, finely chop and add to the bread. ■■ Peel and cut the onion into small dice, heat the butter in a fry pan and add the onions. Saute until translucent, add to bread. ■■ Crack the eggs into a small bowl,

whisk lightly with a fork and add to the bread. Season the bread mixture with salt, pepper and nutmeg and mix well until combined. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. ■■ Wash your hands and form the bread mix into dumplings. ■■ Place dumplings into the oven on the roasting tray with chick-

Scrum guru imparts his wisdom

The Hampstead Rugby Club has benefited from some top notch guidance by revered coaching ace Mike Cron. The former All Blacks forwards coach and renowned scrum specialist offered some technical insight and advice during a 90 minute training session at the club over the weekend. “What an amazing opportunity to get some training and advice from scrum guru Mike Cron,” a club spokesperson said in a Facebook post on Sunday. Hampstead team manager Jason Tennnant said Hampstead’s senior forwards were joined by under-16 players, as well as members of the Mid Canterbury Combined and AshHutt 1st XV teams. “It was fantastic,” he said. “He is the best in the world.” Cron was involved with the All Blacks for 16 years as both a scrum consultant then as a forwards coach, before stepping down after last year’s Rugby World Cup campaign. Tournaments go on without the fans The PGA golf Tour says next week’s Memorial Tournament in Ohio, which was supposed to be the first since the circuit’s return from a three-month Covid-19 hiatus to include spectators, will instead be held without fans. The Jack Nicklaus-hosted event at Muirfield Village Golf Club had received state approval in mid-June to have limited attendance and planned to allow 20 per cent maximum capacity on the property for the July 16-19 event. But the PGA Tour said that due to the

rapidly changing dynamics of the Covid-19 outbreak, the Memorial would instead go ahead as its sixth consecutive tournament without fans. The Memorial will feature some of the biggest names in golf as world number one Rory McIlroy and fivetimes major winner Phil Mickelson are among those who have already committed to the event ahead of Friday’s deadline. Six PGA Tour players have tested positive for Covid-19 through the first four tournaments. Rory McIlroy will be in action at the Memorial Tournament.

Big bucks for Mahomes Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a 10-year contract extension through 2031 in what has been reported as a record deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but ESPN reported the deal is worth more than $600 million and the “richest contract in NFL history.” That would also make his total contract the largest in the history of North American team sports. Mahomes, 24, guided the Chiefs to a Super Bowl championship last season. In those 12 seasons, he will earn at least $648 million, surpassing the 12-year, $647 million contract signed by Angels baseball outfielder Mike Trout in March.

Spurs pip Everton An own goal by Michael Keane proved the difference as Tottenham Hotspur beat visitors Everton 1-0 in a dour Premier League clash to move up to eighth in the standings. Defeat would have seen Spurs fall below the visitors into the bottom half of the table but they held on fairly comfortably to stretch their unbeaten league run versus Everton to 15 games. Tottenham have 48 points from 33 games, one behind Arsenal and nine adrift of fourthplaced Chelsea.

Magic, Stars finish level The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and Northern Stars have produced the first draw of the ANZ netball Premiership, finishing 46-46 in Auckland. Community sport the big winner

Methven moneyshot Methven’s Leyton Blackwell is the latest golfer in Mid Canterbury to claim a hole-in-one. The recently-achieved feat occurred on the par 3 17th at the Methven Golf Club alongside team-mate, Kane Hickman. Phil Johnson came close to matching Blackwell on the 13th during competition action last weekend. He hit a “hole-in-one”, however Johnson drained the shot from the tee into the spare hole. He then sank the ensuing putt for a birdie in two. Blackwell’s 17th hole ace follows other holes-in-one at Methven earlier this year, both on the 13th by Geoff Kelk and youngster Jack Brown. Community sport and national leagues will receive the bulk of the Government’s first $80 million release from its $265 million Sport Recovery Package. A $68 million fund (Te Manawa Active Aotearoa) will go to support community sport. $34 million comes from the Sport Recovery Package with the remaining $34m from existing Sport NZ funding. An initial $7.3m will go towards improving facilities for New Zealand’s upcoming hosting of World Cups. The country is hosting the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup and co-hosting next year’s Women’s Cricket World Cup with Australia. $25.4m from the first release of the Sport Recovery Package will go to national sports organisations, such as New Zealand Rugby, New Zealand Cricket, Netball New Zealand and Basketball New Zealand. This funding will also support specific sports with the cost of running premier national leagues affected by Covid-19, including basketball. It’s unclear how much each sport will receive. There’s $10m for a second Community Resilience Fund to provide further immediate support to a broader range of eligible local and regional organisations. “Today we’re setting out how $80m will be invested, with $54m of that over the 2020/2021 financial year for organisations from community level through to elite level, said Sports Minister Grant Robertson. “All levels of the sector have been affected by Covid-19 and this funding is focused on making sure the sector continues to thrive, while also ensuring New Zealanders can continue to maintain their wellbeing through physical activity.” The funds will open for application by the end of August. “Sport NZ has also earmarked $3m for individuals and families in financial hardship who are unable to take part in sport and recreation opportunities.

Grant Robertson Details on how this funding will be distributed will be released in coming weeks. “All the funding announced today, and the remainder of the package will continue to place a specific emphasis on groups who are traditionally less active or are missing out, including women and girls, Maori, disabled people and our high deprivation communities. “Having prioritised initiatives that focus on the areas in most need of support, Sport NZ will continue to engage with the sector to decide how the remaining $180m is best spent over the next four years to help sport recover, strengthen and adapt,” Robertson said.

Steel’s promising shooter out for the season The Southern Steel have lost shooter Georgia Heffernan for the rest of the year. Heffernan suffered a serious knee injury playing against the Northern Stars in the ANZ netball Premiership nine days ago. Scans have confirmed a ruptured ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), MCL (medial collateral ligament) and meniscus damage to her right knee. Steel head coach Reinga Bloxham said her side would give their full support to

helping the 20-year-old on her road to recovery. “I’m absolutely gutted for her. She had been playing really well and was improving with every outing that she had so we are all really feeling for her at the moment,” Bloxham said. “I think the most disappointing thing for her is knowing that she had worked really hard in the pre-season to be able to contest for the GA bib and really give it a good crack. “Georgia can take some real positives

out of the impact that she made this season.” Heffernan said it was upsetting to have to watch the rest of season from the sideline but was motivated to come back stronger than ever. “It’s a disappointing way to finish the season, I didn’t think I had injured my knee as badly as I have but I have to accept that as I can’t change it,” she said. Simon Slade has clinched the Methven Squash Club’s men’s open title, after fellow finalist Craig Stratford was forced to pull out. Tournament organisers confirmed Stratford suffered a groin injury during an earlier match and was unable to take his place on centre court for the final. It came a week after Stratford secured the Collegiate Open’s championship event. The result meant further silverware for Slade, who has enjoyed previous success

on Mid Canterbury’s squash courts. The Christchurch A2 competitor won the Ashburton Squash Open two years ago. He booked his spot in the final courtesy of wins over Bryan Ford and Scott Butterick, while Stratford defeated Mitch Sim and Agustin Maunier en route to the final, before the ex-pat Ashburtonian, now an Aucklander, was forced to withdraw. An exhibition match between Slade and Maunier, who won the corresponding event last year, was staged for the big crowd in place of the shelved finale. The women’s open was won by Hoon

Hay Squash Club’s Kelsi Carrick, after a 3-1 win over Timaru’s Lily Rae. She beat Brenda Hall and Karlie McQueen in the lead up to her title-winning effort. Other grades reached their conclusions on centre court. Matt Speedy backed up his performance at Collegiate, again edging Isaac Bazley in the men’s A final by 3-1. Christy Pearce cleaned up in the B final with a 3-0 win over Jared Clark. The lower men’s grades found their winners with Grant Brookland beating Hamish

Woolsey 3-1 in the C grade final, Hamish Hunter-Letham pipping Michael Vanderweg 3-2 in the D grade decider and Rob Millar shutting out Robbie Watson 3-0 in E grade action. Ashburton’s Darnelle Lima, who won the B grade in 2019, clinched the women’s A grade courtesy of a thrilling 3-2 victory over Steph Sim. Tanya Hawley won all three of her matches in a competitive women’s B round robin competition. Rosie Gibbs, Jessica Henderson and Genevieve Slade all won a game each.
