Former Ashburton man charged with murder

Methven artist Karen Smith has won many awards and received high praise for her work, but says it would take a lot to beat the prize she won on Monday night when her art work was chosen as the Ashburton District Council’s gift to its Japanese sister city Shiozawa.

Smith, who has been painting for more than 20 years, was stunned when mayor Donna Favel said her painting of the Rakaia Gorge had been chosen to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Ashburton and Shiozawa relationship.

“When I walked in to the opening she came up and told me. I was so excited, it was like I’d won an award, that’s pretty special,” she said.

Over the years Smith has sold paintings for birthdays, anniversaries but never to mark a rela-

tionship between two towns. Her painting will now wing its way to Japan in time for the October commemoration.

The painting is an oil on circular hardboard and is one of Smith’s current favourite works.

It took about a week to complete, with hours of fine work required to complete snow covered mountains and the braided river elements.

“I’ve got a couple like this in the window of the gallery, one of the Rakaia and one of the Rangitata and they actually stop people.

This one has a sort of Japanese feel; I like the dark and moody feel,” she said.

Smith is a fulltime artist and usually has several works in progress at once. Doing that keeps her mind fresh and stops her work becoming messy, she said.

Having the council buy her work was a great confidence boost, she said.

“You can get stuck in a rut. You doubt yourself a bit and then a sale, or something exciting like this happens and you’re away again. I’ve been flat out all week.”

She’s posted news about the sale on Facebook and been stunned with the likes received – 18,000 and climbing.

In addition to the gift of a painting, the council will establish a $2000 scholarship that will fund a student from either Japan or Ashburton to attend the other’s school.

Representatives from Shiozawa (now known as Minamiuonuma) had planned to travel to Ashburton in October to mark the anniversary. This will no longer occur and the gift of an art work and the establishment of a scholarship were seen by the Ashburton District Council as an appropriate way to mark the anniversary, Favel said.

Originally the council had set

aside $15,000 for the anniversary celebrations.

The art work and scholarship are well within this budget and fall in line with her determination to find cost effective ways to enhance relationships with other countries and other cultures.

She’s been involved in sister city discussions with mayors from other parts of New Zealand and said there were plenty of ideas around for building relationships that benefited the whole community, from schools to businesses.

Favel said she was aware of local schools that had relationships with schools in other parts of the world and was keen to gain a deeper understanding of those links.

“If we go deeper into one relationship rather than all having different relationships then we can get much more out of it,” she said.

A former Ashburton man is one of seven people charged with murder following the death of a 19-year-old man in Invercargill last month.

Interim name suppression for Brayden Whiting-Roff, 20, lapsed this week, almost a month after he was charged with the murder of Jack Thomas Mcallister after an alleged attack at Stadium Southland on June 7.

Mcallister died in hospital the following day.

Whiting-Roff was the first of the seven to be charged following the assault and appeared in the Invercargill District Court on June 8 and the remaining six accused were charged, and appeared the following day.

He is yet to enter a plea.

All seven defendants are set down to next appear in court in relation to the charge on August 29.

Home brew land youths in hospital A Dunedin man has been arrested after several young people were hospitalised with alcohol poisoning, allegedly from home brew he supplied them.

The man was arrested after police executed a search warrant earlier yesterday.

The search warrant was carried out following the hospitalisation of several young people.

Senior sergeant Ben Butterfield said a “significant amount” of home-brewed beer and spirits was recovered during the search warrant.

Mt Somers, a library that warms hearts

There’s snow on the mountains and a definite chill in the air but inside the Mt Somers Library the coffee is hot, the welcome warm and there’s some of the best morning tea around on offer.

Yesterday the village’s tiny library turned into a meeting place as locals gathered, talked and checked out the latest on the library’s shelves.

Unlike many rural libraries, Mt Somers’ is thriving as a haven for bibliophiles of all tastes. And yesterday it was tastes of the culinary variety that were catered for as platter after platter of food was passed around.

Visitors from Ashburton arrived bearing gifts of books and library equipment and locals came simply to catch up with one another, And no one was happier than the library’s convenor Anne Chapman.

She’s been on the team since day one and it was her passion for book collecting that saw the library born.

“My husband John was going on about the stacks of books I had around the house, this building was empty so I decided why not have a library,” she said.

A quick check and the old post office building was available, given a spring clean and a small committee formed. Shelves were initially stacked with whatever books the library team could find.

That was about six years ago and today the Mt Somers Library is a thriving community gathering spot.

“It’s growing all the time and we’ve now got a lot of new books.

We try to keep up to date but we’re limited space wise and we do try to have something for everyone,” Chapman said.

District librarian Jill Watson is a staunch advocate for the tiny library and has battled the Ashburton District Council to ensure it is granted money each year to boost its book stocks.

While the library is well used by locals, there are also many borrowers who travel up from Ashburton for lunch at Staveley and then continue on to Mt Somers to borrow books. It’s a place where

everyone is welcome, she said.

“We never turn anyone away. All borrowings are recorded in a book and we say we’d like them back in two or three weeks.”

Twice a year the library team plays host to the community and that’s part of fulfilling Chapman’s original dream, to have a gathering place for locals that was “comfy, cosy and snug.”

“It’s rewarding to see the turnout. This is about getting people together and I want this to be a place where anyone and everyone can come and feel welcome,” she said.

The Mt Somers Library is open on Sunday and Thursday from 2pm–4pm, officially, but if the sign is outside the door, the door is open.

Forget your rates, keep your money

Paying rates could be a thing of the past for seniors living in the Ashburton District.

If you own your own home mortgage free and you’re over 65 then you could be taking a permanent rates holiday, says Ashburton District Council finance manager Sandy Hogg.

A rates postponement scheme offers seniors an opportunity to free up cash by taking a permanent rates holiday, but it’s a scheme that is neither well known nor well used, she said.

Currently only three or four home owners have opted to take up the deal and she suspects that might be because the process involved is quite time consuming, involving at least one session with a facilitator who will ensure both the home owner and their family know what is involved.

“Normally you’ll have two of these just to make sure you’re fully informed and completely understand what you’re doing,” she said.

If you sign on to have your rates postponed, you can basically count extra cash in your pocket, Hogg said.

An establishment fee of $300 and an annual levy and administration fee are part of the deal.

These are not paid up front. All debts are paid when your house is sold.

The accumulated debt cannot exceed 80 per cent of your home’s rating value.

‘It’s a good scheme and it would be great if a lot more people used it and the good thing about it is there’s no obligation to stay with it.

Each year you’re contacted and asked if you want to sign on to the scheme again.”

From time to time there was a surge of interest in the scheme, but often people didn’t get past the first two criteria – 65 plus and a mortgage-free home.

There were some circumstances, however, in which a home owner who still had a mortgage could qualify, she said.

Because the amount involved, usually around $2000 a year, it would take many years before the amount of debt became significant.

While Ashburton has had the rates postponement scheme on board for several years, Christchurch City is only now looking at this as an option for asset rich and cash strapped superannuitants.

Its scheme will have a 20 per cent of property value cap and would have annual interest and an administration fee added.

The city council also runs a hardship rates postponement scheme for home owners of any age but this has a very low uptake.

“Obviously there needs to be a register of people who need to be contacted if something happens, not just for Methven but for the whole district,” Brown said.

He said most people had cellphones so there could be an email, social media, text message system put in place, or an app.

Brown has also asked council staff to provide a report on how the treatment failure was handled, addressing issues such as why the notice was not introduced earlier in the day.

Former councillor Martin Nordqvist, who lives in Methven, said a system which could be

considered by the council was a letter box drop or door knocking.

Nordqvist said with there being less than 800 homes in the village, to do either of these would not be a difficult task, and council staff could be helped by volunteers.

He believed the water supply was a good one and understood that any untreated water would have been mixed with treated water, so did not have huge concerns about the risk the supply presented.

“But it’s the time lapse that seems to be bothering people,” he said.

Making history part of our future The past They came in twos, threes and large groups, some travelled alone, but over several years, dozens of members of the Ng family left their home province of Canton in China, bound for a new life in New Zealand.

Initially they settled in Gore, opening a laundry and a market garden but in 1921 a flood forced the family to look for land elsewhere. They chose Ashburton as their new home, settling on a 2.3 hectare property on Allens Road.

Between 1921 and the late 1970s that land became a thriving market garden trading under the name of King Bros. It quickly grew to become the number one Chinese

market garden in the South Island.

Initially only men settled on the Ashburton land; their families did not begin arriving from China until 1939 The families built homes, banks of accommodation units for single men, sheds, food preparation and packing areas and shops. Initially vegetables were delivered around Ashburton by horse and cart but when trucks replaced horse power deliveries extended around the district.

Vegetables were sold from a shop on site and later from a shop on Burnett Street.

At its peak there were 12 houses on the site and as many as 80 peo-

ple in the community.

Sons followed fathers into the business but when it came the turn of the settlers’ grandchildren to become market gardeners, most opted for careers off the land. From the late 1950s the settlement’s population began to decline as families moved away.

The market garden and on-site shop were closed in 1964 but the Burnett Street shop traded until 2006.

When the last of the families moved off the land upkeep of the land and buildings became an issue and for many years the site was little more than long grass and dilapidated buildings.

With multiple owners and large numbers of descendants, it was difficult for the Ng family to make decisions around the market garden’s future.

In 2008 an approach was made to the Ashburton District Council suggesting that it would take over stewardship of the land and buildings, preserving its heritage values and erecting a memorial to the early Chinese settlers.

This deal became official in 2013 and a document was signed by the council and 13 descendants of the

original settlers.

Four years down the track little has changed. The elderly buildings have slipped a little further into disrepair but the council has restored one of the most significant features in the settlement, the central, outdoor pig oven.

The council then commissioned a heritage and restoration assessment of the buildings and this week its Chinese settlement working group took a long, hard look at what had been proposed by heritage planner Arlene Baird.

Still standing on the site are

two blocks of garages, a retail shop which has been identified as having high historical value, a washroom, laundry and drying area, food stores, a workshop and school, a kitchen, living area and office and several bedroom blocks.

Of these, Baird said apart from one shed and a bedroom block which should be demolished, the remainder could be restored.

A house, poultry sheds, stables, kennels, toilets and produce washing facilities have all either fallen down or been demolished several years ago.

The future At Baird’s recommendation, the working group approved an option that would see $95,400 spent to restore several buildings and stabilise a food storage and workshop building and a bedroom.

The restored buildings will be able to be fully accessed by visitors to the site and the two stabilised buildings will be preserved and can be restored in the future.

She also recommends that some form of marking is used to outline all of the buildings that have been demolished and to place interpretive panels alongside these areas to tell the story of their original use.

extensively throughout the settlement to tell the stories of the families who made the Allens Road land their home.

Under this option building exteriors would be restained or repainted to improve the appearance of the site.

The aesthetic work will not stop there. A landscape plan will be drawn up and this is proposed to include a community orchard in recognition of the land as an earlier food source, a Chinese memorial garden and recreational space.

Both the demolition of the two buildings in poor condition and the landscaping will be an

additional cost.

The proposal will now be discussed by all councillors before it is signed off – or not – at the next council meeting on August 10.

A key in determining whether the plan moves ahead or not will be how the work is funded. The council can opt to build the cost into its long term plan and fund it from its own resources or it can seek external funding support.

Mayor Donna Favel has already indicated she is aware there were groups that could be interested in raising money for the project.

Sealy changes health partner

Ashburton’s Sealy Street Medical Centre has boosted the range of resources it offers its patients.

The practice has joined the primary health organisation (PHO) Pegasus Health, becoming one of more than 100 practices that are part of its network.

Practice manager Kaye Kennedy said the change from the Rural PHO was made to enable patients to access a wider range of services.

These include a child health support team and unlimited sexual health subsidies for enrolled patients under the age of 21. Also available will be funding assistance to manage the physical health of patients with mental health problems who are on specific medications.

This programme is called Equally Well and has strict qualifying criteria.

On a day-to-day basis the switch of PHO will make very little difference to patients, Kennedy said.

The PHO will work in the prac-

tice’s background to provide PHO services to the medical centre.

That support will include a dedicated rural health manager.

Most Mid Canterbury medical practices are linked to the Rural PHO. Pegasus Health was established 25 years ago and has a philosophy of collaboration, working with communities and key partners with the aim of improving the health of Canterbury people.

Pegasus Health provides PHO services for everyone who is enrolled with one of its general practices and primary care organisations. The intention of the PHO is to promote health, reduce the cost of care, and help set the direction for the development of primary health care for our enrolled population.

When a doctor joins a PHO, their patients become an ‘enrolled’ patient.

A liaison team is the point of contact for GP teams seeking advice, support and assistance with programmes and systems issues.

‘Are councils still relevant today?’

It’s not often local governments would argue against their own relevance, but that’s exactly what Ashburton District Councillors will be doing later this month when they take on the Ashburton Youth Council in a charity debate.

The tongue-in-cheek topic is ‘are councils still relevant today’ and at last week’s Ashburton District Council meeting mayor Donna Favel chose for her team to argue the negative – before they knew the topic.

This means councillors Leen Braam, Selwyn Price and Mark Malcolm will be arguing against the relevance of councils, while their opponents youth councillors Alyce Lysaght, Henry Hickman and Sophie Kettley will attempt to prove councils are still relevant.

Youth council chair Alyce Lysaght is encouraging the community to turn out to support the fun event.

In an effort to manage signage in public places the council is putting together a revised advertising signage bylaw; it wants to make sure that signage around the district is neither a nuisance nor offensive to the public.

The bylaw will cover issues such as size, content, numbers of signs, and placement of signs.

The current bylaw was written in 2008.

The main change proposed is a new clause regulating signage around sexual services.

Feedback on the draft advertising signage in public places by law can be made until July 30.

“We want the public to know that dairy businesses care about water quality, and we understand that the rights to use water come with the responsibility to use them properly.”

Unsurprisingly, Sri Lanka drinks a lot of tea, and good tea demands good milk. In this country, a glass of milk signifies prosperity and good luck. Allred to retire after 50 years of Half a century of service is drawing to a close for Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Selwyn Allred.

ethven Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Selwyn Allred has responded to all manner of fire call-outs in his 50 years as a member of the brigade.

They include large vegetation and property fires, wind and snowstorms, car accidents, earthquake damage and even a murder.

The granddad, who lives in the town with wife Lois, first joined the brigade on July 10, 1967.

He had been working as a mechanic at Smallbones garage when a colleague invited him to a practice night.

“By the time I left they had signed me up,” he said.

Nowadays the process would take nine to 10 months by the time police clearance, medical checks and a rigorous training process were com-

pleted. But in those days, firefighters could be out fighting fires from the moment they joined and, for Allred, it was not long before he was doing just that.

Among his early call-outs was to one of the biggest fires Methven has ever seen – the Woodhams seed cleaning and grain store at the end of Racecourse Avenue in 1968.

As it happened the store was managed by fire brigade chief Bill Owen. He had just closed up for the day around

5pm, when a thunderstorm came through.

“When we got there it was going quite well because it had gone through all the electrics,” Allred said.

Lightning was believed to be the cause. Firefighters had raced to the scene with their Land Rover

fire engine and trailer pump and fought the blaze using hydrants off Racecourse Avenue. However, the water was in low supply and they had to access, via a long hose line, water from a creek on a neighbouring farm.

It was a big night fighting the blaze, but by the end of it the firefighters had saved some parts of the shed.

About three quarters of the shed was destroyed, as were the dressing plant,

Others over the years had included a fire at Highbank in a big windstorm, where firefighters were chasing fires all over the place, but managed to save a house, another one which went for days in the Mt Somers riverbed and surrounding vegetation, and the Centrepoint hotel fire in the 1990s.

After the Woodhams’ fire, the second biggest was at Philip Wareing Limited on Line Road in 2005. The transport business’ large workshop and storage shed and its contents were destroyed in the blaze.

There have been many car crashes the crew has responded to over the years, and fatal ones were always difficult for a local brigade, including one which involved one of the brigade members themselves.

Call-outs have included the more unusual, such as having to dismantle damaged chimneys following the Canterbury earthquakes. And in his first year in the brigade he was among firefighters who responded to a murder scene, although at the time firefighters had not realised the sinister nature

of the call-out.

The background to that incident was that in 1967 the owners of Mt Hutt Station, Bruce Richards and his intellectually handicapped brother Robert, fought, ending with Bruce murdering Robert with

blows to the head, before setting the house on fire.

As well as being of service to the community over the years, Allred said he had very much enjoyed the comradeship of being in the brigade. There was the long asso-

ciation with fellow members and also meeting many others through national and regional competitions and conferences.

“It’s the friends and the people you meet,” Allred said.

Among highlights had been that

he had helped with the formation of the Methven Fire Fighters Support Group, which bought a neighbouring section to the fire station, and built a tanker shed, which also has room for training and housing historical equipment.

The Methven brigade has been a family affair over the years for Allred. His father Cliff was chief fire officer in the 1950s, his son Mark was a dedicated brigade member before moving to Australia, and his grandfather Arthur Allred was among those who attended meetings to establish the brigade in the early 1920s.

Allred has worked under three chiefs before he took the role up 21 years ago. Ivan Dalley followed Owen, and then Dave Anderson took over the reins and held the role for 21 years.

Anderson’s son, Methven builder Brent Anderson, is to take over from Allred, who will retire at a function at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall on July 15.

Subsidies not seen to have affected market Chinese subsidies on galvanised steel coil imports won’t attract the wrath of the government after Commerce Minister Jacqui Dean accepted a report that they’re too small to have injured the domestic industry, dominated by Australian-owned New Zealand Steel.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s final report released yesterday found Chinese imports were undercutting NZ Steel prices, but couldn’t be blamed on government support for Chinese manufacturers, which was minimal at most.

NZ Steel, owned by ASX-listed BlueScope, filed a complaint with MBIE last year and mobilised a political campaign accusing Chinese government subsidies of causing material injury to the domestic industry.

In May, Dean wasn’t convinced there were grounds for provisional measures to be imposed on Chinese imports and today accepted a recommendation that she “make a final determination that the subject goods are subsidised only to de minimis lev-

The finding was foreshadowed in a June essential facts and conclusions report.

The Chinese lobby group noted its “continuing concerns with respect to MBIE’s findings relating to injury and causation” and called the ministry’s findings on Chinese imports undercutting the domestic producer as “deficient”.

NZ Steel “strongly disagreed” with MBIE’s findings on subsidies.

The MBIE report shows NZ Steel’s average selling price shrank 25 percent between Sep-

tember 2011 and June 2016 as the local company tried to match cheaper Chinese imports. While it lost market share between 2012 and 2014, it has since regained that ground, the report shows.

The company’s earnings also showed steady and significant decline, which MBIE said “correlates significantly with and can be attributed to price undercutting, price depression and price suppression,” but not linked to Chinese subsidies.

New Zealand importers who took part in the investigation were largely against imposing duties on Chinese steel imports.

MBIE started its investigation with little fanfare in December, simply noting it in the government’s gazette without a public statement. Chinese steel imports have been a bone of contention around the world. When New Zealand was dragged into the matter last year there were claims Kiwi firms could face a backlash if the government pursued an antidumping probe.

There’s a lot more at stake than just a game of rugby Matt Markham

I

n the grand scheme of life, the result of tonight’s test match between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions will have absolutely no impact on the future. So why will we react like it does?

If we lose to our visiting friends from the other side of the world, we will go into mourning.

Every inch of the game will be over-analysed. Players and coaches will be called into question. A nation-wide investigation will be opened.

And for what? A game of rugby?

The answer for why is actually quite simple. It’s pure and unbridled passion.

As the rugby loving public and nation that we are, we allow ourselves to become immersed in our national game.

If our All Blacks lose, we all hurt. If they win, we all rejoice.

The issue is that we aren’t that used to losing these days.

So those odd occurrences where it does happen seem to be magnified into major catastrophes and a full inquiry is often needed to explain it.

Like the America’s Cup did, tonight’s test match is sweeping over the country. It’s dictating talkback, it’s chewing up the column spaces in the papers and it’s the easy go-to for a debate over a beer at the pub after work.

After being beaten last week we are in the completely unfamiliar territory of staring down the barrel at consecutive losses – a strange phenomenon-like feeling for a country that is so used to being on the right side of the ledger.

It’s not something we can just train out of ourselves either.

The only way we can actually learn to handle it better is by losing more often. And let’s be honest, that’s not really a path we want to travel down, is it?

So, when our men in black run out onto Eden Park tonight.

We need them to give their all for their country and leave nothing out on the paddock.

Nothing at all.

If they do that, then we should win.

Don’t do it and we may have a national riot on our hands.

h dear! What a dark period for our two “main” Parties.

How could Labour and National, simultaneously, get themselves into such a mess, just at the moment they want to be seen at their scintillating best, with September’s election pending?

Did Messrs Key and then English really think a dollop or two of hush money would bring a permanent end to the potential damage done by their errant Dipton MP, the photogenic, but flawed, successor to the current himself in that deeply southern electorate, Todd Barclay.

Secretly to record your staff in the electorate office – presumably to find out what they might be saying about their larger than life representative’s broad back – was either a serious case of mind-blowing vanity or an exercise in the sinisterly secretive.

Recently, those well-known adjuncts to hidden tapes – so enthusiastically embraced by the media, given half a chance – sex and drugs, have been added to the list of dubious activities associated with Barclay’s unwise foray into the underworld.

Not surprisingly, the Dipton office staff, who worked loyally for English for so many years, have been less than impressed by the underhand habits employed by his upstart successor.

Having been assured, as much as it is possible to be in the uncertain world of politics, of an electorate seat for life, Barclay, despite his recent re-selection, has now squandered entirely the inheritance that was his for the taking.

What’s more, in the process, he has greatly embarrassed his leader and Dipton predecessor, who has so far found a convincing, media-proof, explanation extremely difficult to lay his hands on.

Many have now commented that English may inadvertently have inherited his predecessor’s predilection for being sparing with the truth – aka lying – when attempting to deny yet another faux par.

English is thus left looking and sounding a good deal less than squeaky clean as the scandal rumbles on.

Already suffering by comparison with Key, English could well have done without what amounts to a very public embarrassment.

However, extraordinarily as it may seem, coming to his aid, the Labour Party, also suffering from a bad dose of embarrassment and raised eyebrows of incredulity.

Having called loudly for a serious cut back in the number of immigrants we allow into the country, at the very same moment the Party was arranging for the arrival of eighty-five foreigners – many of them Americans, some with uncertain visas – who, for no pay, were to work to enhance the Labour

Party’s prospects for the election in September.

That the accommodation was also some way short of five star didn’t help the cause either.

Matt McCarten, described as a New Zealand political organiser, with form, seems to have been the instigator of this unsuccessful endeavour for which Little has fronted up and attempted to subdue the storm.

Most of the visiting propagandists are now home again, if, that is, President Trump hasn’t found some way of keeping them out permanently. After all, if you have hopes of returning at any time in the future, to the United States you presumably think twice (at least) whether your journey is really necessary.

So there are our two party giants, egg dripping down their shiny faces, their causes much diminished by a remarkable – and highly infectious – outbreak of crass political mismanagement, leaving both susceptible to crippling vote loss, a complaint that is very often terminal.

Elsewhere, Peters has been seen rubbing his hands with almost dangerous intensity while smiling beyond reasonable human means.

And why not?

His belittling of his opponents at this time of the election cycle is always at its sharpest and when those adversaries plumb depths of stupidity and incompetence on this scale, he should find the whole procedure even more to his liking and to that of his tongue.

And ... about to join him and his team, is heavy-hitter Shane Jones, whose choice of television

may not be to everyone’s taste but who, in every other way, is a man to be much welcomed onto your side.

NZ First will be immensely boosted by his presence on the Bridge, with skipper Winston at the helm.

You can probably see Team NZ First rising gracefully on its foils even as we speak.

wonder what your mail box brings you this week. Mine brought me two items that weren’t trying to sell or somehow extract money from my bank account.

The first was the exposure the New Zealand Herald is giving to a major concern in Northland, and in particular its teenagers, are facing.

Northland, my home territory, my turangawaewae, has been having a hard time for an extremely long time.

It is so easy to shrug our shoulders, feel sorry and move on.

The government seems to now be targeting some money and resources at the issues, great, it will help. Hopefully they will be able to commit long term to

helping Northland through the tragedies of despair and lives cut short.

A pat on the back to the news media for tackling the issues and not pretending the emperor is well dressed.

Like so many problems faced in our lives ‘people need people’ more than any other resource.

Professionals, trained experts sure help but they have a job to do, time constraints, and so often are only around for a crisis.

They must move on and attack the next problem.

The other item that arrived in my in box was a collection of quotes, two of which caught my attention.

The first, by Ray Pritchard “When hard times come, be a student, not a victim” and the second by Dave Willis, “Be an encourager. The world has plenty of critics already”.

Hard times come in all sorts of disguises. Learning from them makes us all better able to cope and to do better next time.

It also helps us understand what others are going through and to help them too.

Being a helper and an encourager are two, so important, jobs that God offers spiritual help to enable us to do them better.

South keen on North talks South Korea’s president reiterated he’s willing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un even as he condemned the North’s first intercontinental ballistic missile test-launch this week as a “reckless” move that incurred punishment by the international community.

During a speech ahead of the Group of 20 summit in Germany, President Moon Jae-in also proposed the two Koreas resume reunions of families separated by war, stop hostile activities along their heavily fortified border and co-operate on the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

But it’s unclear that North Korea would accept any of Moon’s overtures as South Korea is working with the United States and others to get the country punished for this week’s ICBM launch.

It’s not the first time Moon has talked about a summit with Kim, but repeating that idea two days after the North’s most successful missile test to date clearly indicates he prefers dialogue to applying more pressure or sanctions on the North.

Quake damages power plant, causes landslides A strong earthquake damaged a power plant, caused landslides and cracked buildings and roads in the central Philippines, injuring scores of people and cutting off outlying villages.

An east-central area of the archipelago was without power yesterday, and the army sent soldiers and engineers to villages where roads were reportedly impassable.

The 6.5-magnitude quake late Thursday afternoon was centred in Leyte province at

a shallow depth, which often can cause greater surface damage. The US Geological Survey measured its depth at 6.5 kilometres, while Filipino seismologists said it was 2 kilometres deep and caused by movement of the Philippine Fault.

Two deaths were reported, and four people were missing from the quake most strongly felt in the Leyte town of Kananga. A building with a grocery store and other businesses collapsed from the

shaking, killing one person, injuring more than 20 others and trapping six people who were later rescued, Kananga Mayor Rowena Codilla said.

“I can see that the child looks pale and weak, but the others are okay,” Codilla said as she watched medics treating the victims. She said many people managed to dash out when the building started to sway, but those stuck inside guided the rescuers by cellphone to where they were trapped.

A big chunk of the eastern side of the central Philippines was without electricity because a geothermal power plant in the town of Jaro sustained damage, said Romina Marasigan, spokeswoman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council. She said some houses in upland villages, mostly made of light materials, have been totally damaged.

More than 241 aftershocks were recorded up to early yesterday.

Oswalt engaged US actor and comedian Patton Oswalt is engaged to marry actress Meredith Salenger. The couple recently went public with their relationship at the Los Angeles premiere of Baby Driver.

Oswalt’s publicist confirmed the news of their engagement. Oswalt’s wife, Michelle McNamara, died in April 2016 from a combination of prescription medications and an undiagnosed heart condition. She was a writer who founded the website True Crime Diary, which covered breaking stories and cold cases. Oswalt had been public with his grief, writing about it and incorporating it into his standup routine.

Oswalt played Spence on the sitcom The King of Queens. He’ll appear in the upcoming NBC comedy A.P. Bio.

College draw a surprise

In the latest round of Mid Cantebury Netball’s premier competition, Celtic and Methven were able to get the job done, while Ashburton College threw away two points against Hampstead.

Fresh off taking out the second round of the competition and a 41-28 demolition of Southern last week, the high-flying Ash Coll had their wings clipped by a determined Hampstead side,

drawing 27-27. There was very little to separate the sides in the first quarter, with the score standing at 8-8 at the end of the quarter.

As Ash Coll have done in many games before, they stretched out a lead in the second quarter, holding a 16-13 lead at halftime.

The lead looked comfortable throughout the third, but Hampstead kept the pressure on, not allowing Ash Coll to run away at any point.

The fourth quarter was Hampstead’s time to shine however, piling the pressure on Ash Coll, clawing back their lead until they no longer had one.

With the scores tied heading in to the final few minutes, frantic, helter-skelter netball ensued, with both sides unable to find the nerve to sink the shot required to take the victory.

One last attempt to hoist the ball up the court did not come off for Ash Coll, with the final

whistle spelling the end of any hopes of winning.

Celtic were able to get the job done against United, despite a strong first half resistance from United.

United held a narrow 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, with Celtic able to turn around in the second quarter, finishing it with an 11-8 lead.

At halftime, Celtic turned to the bench, and from that point on did not look back, running

out to a 28-15 scoreline at fulltime.

Methven have found their form once again, cruising to a comfortable victory against Southern 38-31.

In the premier 2 grade, Hampstead B picked up a 36-30 win against Celtic C, while Celtic B thrashed Southern B 49-24.

Ashburton College B had a similar result to the A-team, drawing 33-33 with heavyweights Rakaia.

Saving the best for last In a test career full of highlights, All Blacks first-five Aaron Cruden hopes today’s British and Irish Lions series decider will be the pick of the bunch.

The 28-year-old Cruden will pull on the famous black jumper for the last time at Eden Park, as he prepares for a lucrative move to French club Montpellier.

It’s the final chapter of a sterling test career that includes a World Cup triumph on home soil, a last-second penalty goal in Dublin to complete the side’s unbeaten 2013 test campaign and wins at Twickenham and Ellis Park.

Yet the Chiefs co-captain Cruden, playing in his 50th Test, says a victory in today’s showdown could be the most memorable of all.

“This weekend is certainly going to be right up there; the anticipation from the public, the fans, media, us as a playing group (too),” Cruden said.

“It doesn’t get much bigger I suppose, bar a World Cup or World Cup final.

“For me, this series has been about trying to embrace it, enjoy all the special moments you get throughout the series.”

Earmarked for the All Blacks No.10 after the departure of Dan Carter, Cruden endured a frustrating 2016 Test campaign and eventually relinquished the fiveeighth role to Beauden Barrett.

Hurricanes star Barrett went on to be named the 2016 World Rugby player of the year and is now among the first names on Steve Hansen’s team sheet.

Cruden has twice come off the bench against the Lions, however, including a 50-minute spell in the All

Blacks’ 30-15 first-test win.

The Manawatu native said his New Zealand’s 14-man side had let key moments slip in their second test defeat in Wellington, and wouldn’t make the same mistake in the series decider – with tries, as opposed to penalty goals, on the menu.

“Probably, in those crucial moments, we weren’t as clinical or polished as we normally are,” Cruden said.

“That’s certainly been at the forefront of our minds.

“Both teams will be hoping to maximise their opportunities.

“If you’re able to build the scoreboard up in threes, that’s great, but one thing we’ve spoken about is that we’d love to go up in sevens this week.”

Cruden’s test career: Played: 49 tests (26 starts) Points: 322 (63 conversions, 56 penalties, 5 tries, 1 dropped goal).

All Blacks ‘can’t complain if they lose to Lions’

By Sir Graham henry This match is a Godsend for the All Blacks and for rugby as a whole.

Even if New Zealand lose – and I don’t believe they will – then the sport will be much the better for the whole experience.

We have been thirsty for this sort of event, this sort of challenge, and we cannot complain if it goes against us.

If we get beaten again, then heads will be hanging in the dressing-room sheds, that is for sure.

But we have been crying out for this and now we have to deal with it.

The All Blacks are going to find out a lot about themselves.

My view is that they will already have discovered those truths in the review of the second test and the build-up to this final test. You only had to see how impressive they were in defeat to realise that they will have looked in on themselves first and foremost to work out why they lost, rather than look out externally to find an excuse.

If you make excuses, you are giving yourself an out.

There will have been no fuss or anger. It will have been a factual, rather than emotional analysis, process-driven.

For me, the conclusion will have been that they were too conserva-

Sir Graham Henry tive. They need to be bolder, more assured, playing the All Black way that we have come to know.

They over-kicked in Wellington.

They played a territory-power game, rather than a territory-skill game.

Even though the conditions were atrocious, they should have backed themselves more with ballin-hand, put people through holes.

All the attacking stats were in the Lions’ favour. The All Blacks kicked 30 per cent more than the Lions did.

The Lions made six line-breaks for one from the All Blacks, with five off-loads to three. That is a significant reversal of styles.

That is what the All Blacks will be attending to, not to any gripes on the night, even though I felt that

they had the rough end of the refereeing. Not on the Sonny Bill Williams sending off, which was absolutely the right decision.

There was no point in saying that the French referee, Jerome Garces, was stricter than (South African) Jaco Peyper might have been. Any ref in the world would have sent off Sonny Bill.

For me, there was no malice in it, just very poor judgment.

The same was not true of the Mako Vunipola incident (clearingout Beauden Barrett). Vunipola was fortunate that he did not get a red.

But the final penalty, given against Charlie Faumuina, who tackled Kyle Sinckler when he was momentarily off the ground taking a pass, left me gob-smacked.

I’d like to think that I have watched more games of rugby than most on the planet and I have never seen a penalty given for an offence like that.

By the very letter of the law, there might have been a bit of justification. But the law was never intended to cover such situations.

What next? Players jumping in the air all the time to avoid a tackle?

The All Blacks have got on with the job. There has been unfair criticism of Beauden Barrett in all this.

First of all, for his goal-kicking.

It is worth pointing out that he did

land seven, a record against a Lions team.

He did miss three, but I have no issues with him were he to continue the goal-kicking duties on Saturday, rather than it passing to his brother, Jordie.

The All Black selectors have been bold with the selection of both Jordie Barrett and Ngani Laumape, both starting in their first tests. That’s a big call in this mustwin game.

As for Beauden’s open-field play, he has been hampered somewhat by having to switch to full-back in the first test, when Ryan Crotty went off, and again with the injury to Waisake Naholo.

Beauden needs to stay true to himself and bold, and take the ball over the gain-line and then play the appropriate option, rather than always having 12 or the blindside wing carrying into contact.

Taking the ball into contact just gives this wonderful Lions defence a second opportunity to regroup and defend off the breakdown, and this is an area that they are simply outstanding.

That we have reached this terrific climax is a great tribute to the Lions. Warren Gatland deserves great credit for bringing it all together.

There have been no sideshows, no distractions within camp. They

have been as one.

It has amazed me how they have managed to do that, even though they have had to cope with an itinerary from hell. It would have been hard enough to keep your head above water, let alone be in this position.

That there has been no more verbal sparring between Steve (Hansen) and Warren shows how much respect is there.

So, to the contest itself. It will not be about attitude - that is a given.

Both teams will be at the right pitch mentally. Technique, though, in all aspects will be paramount.

Take the breakdown. If the ballcarrier can stay up, rather than go to ground early, and then the cleaners win the height battle, entering low and driving past the ball, it will win that crucial phase.

It will be the same all over the field.

Of course, it will be a passionate experience for players, for coaches, for everyone at Eden Park. And, of course, there is pressure on the All Blacks.

We must all savour the occasion for what it is. We are talking a special moment, the biggest game in New Zealand since the 2011 Rugby World Cup final.

The All Blacks prevailed that day – just – and I believe they will again.

Barker mixed on TNZ lifting Cup Former skipper Dean Barker has revealed he had ‘mixed emotions’ when watching Team New Zealand win the America’s Cup last week.

Barker led the Emirates Team New Zealand campaigns in 2003, 2007 and 2013 before leaving the syndicate to join SoftBank Team Japan for the recent America’s Cup in Bermuda.

Team Japan reached the Louis Vuitton Cup semifinals before giving up a 3-1 lead to lose to Swedish crew Artemis. Team New Zealand defeated Artemis in the Louis Vuitton Cup finals before claiming the America’s Cup from Oracle Team USA, winning the final regatta 7-1.

Barker was skipper of Team New Zealand at the 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013 when the team gave up an 8-1 lead over Oracle Team USA. Writing on the Softbank Team Japan website, Barker said he has no regrets about leaving Team New Zealand and says it will be amazing to have the event back in New Zealand.

“Reflecting back on the racing, particularly the racing between Emirates Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA, I cannot help but be impressed with the domination that ETNZ showed. They were truly a class above the rest, and the radically different design and innovation that the team had taken

Dean Barker ended up far superior to the solutions the other teams had found.

In brief Lee starts well Danny Lee’s excellent form has continued as he searches for his second career PGA Tour victory – at the same course where he won his first. Lee sits in a share of third of at six-under par after the first round of the Greenbrier Classic; where he is the defending champion. College overcome Chch Boys The Ashburton College senior boys’ basketball team continued its push for a top four spot in the Thompson Trophy competition on Thursday night with a 7758 win over Christchurch Boys’ High School.

College sits fifth on the ladder with one game to go before quarter-finals but a home game at that stage of the competition could rest on the outcome of other match-ups in the last

round on August 1.

Both the Thompson Trophy and Whelan Trophy competition for girls take a break over the school holidays.

College coach Pip Johnston said his side got off to a great start against CBHS on Thursday night and was able to control the tempo of the game well. College led 22-8 at the first quarter and 38-31 at half-time.

“Boys high put the pressure on

us in the second quarter but we were able to hold our own and stay calm. The fourth quarter was a great quarter for us and it showed in the final result.”

College held a slender sixpoint lead after the third quarter, up 53-47, but outscored their city hosts 24-11 in the final stanza.

“It was great to see the boys all playing for each other. Josh Lowe had a huge game with 28

points and 15 rebounds. He’s been working really hard and it showed he can dominate in this competition. Everybody that got on showed me that they deserved to be out there.”

The College boys and girls will return in term three with an additional focus – the South Island Secondary Schools’ Premierships are in Dunedin early September with the top six finishers qualifying for the nationals.

Rachel Priest smashed a blistering 90 off 55 balls as New Zealand cruised to an eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in an ICC Women’s World Cup match in Taunton. For the second successive game, the West Indies struggled after being put in to bat, and while this was an improvement on the 48 scored against South Africa, 150 all out was nowhere near enough. Leigh Kasperek was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of three for 17 off her 10 overs as the West Indies struggled to get her away.

Comparison ignored Try as they might, the reporters grilling Novak Djokovic couldn’t get the three-time Wimbledon champion to criticise John McEnroe for comparing him to Tiger Woods. McEnroe said Djokovic was “distracted” and the person who comes to mind in similar circumstances “is not a tennis player, it’s actually a golfer: Tiger Woods.” Djokovic was asked about those comments after he beat Adam Pavlasek 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Warriors still in the race to the playoffs The Warriors remain in the thick of the NRL finals race but make or break time looms as they prepare for their final eight games of the regular season.

The Auckland-based side find themselves in familiar territory ahead of the home stretch, as they currently sit 10th on the premiership ladder on 16 competition points and four outside the top eight, ahead of this weekend’s second bye round.

After recovering from disastrous defeats to Penrith and St George Illawarra in mid-May, the Warriors have enjoyed their traditional rise in form throughout the State of Origin period, winning three of their past five games against the Broncos, Titans and Bulldogs.

However, doubts remain over their ability to match it with the best sides following last week’s 26-22 defeat to Manly in Perth, and they need at least five more

Cowboys will be without injured captain Johnathan Thurston, but although the Warriors should account for the Knights, the improving Rabbitohs are sure to be desperate and a round 26 trip to Leichhardt Oval will be tougher than the Tigers’ lowly status suggests.

Injuries to forward pair Ryan Hoffman (foot) and Albert Vete (broken arm) will test the Warriors depth while concerns remain over the fitness of five-eighth Kieran Foran (quad), first-choice hooker Issac Luke (shoulder) and back-up No9 Nathaniel Roache (hamstring).

Front-rower Sam Lisone appears likely to replace Vete, while centre Solomone Kata is also expected to be available for next week’s game against Penrith, after returning from bereavement leave following the recent passing of his brother in Tonga.

The World Boxing Organisation has agreed to a Filipino government department’s request to review Sunday’s fight after the legendary Pacquiao described the unanimous decision against him as unfair. ‘We lose another one we are history’

Three weeks ago, many would have predicted the match between Rakaia and Southern to be a preview in to what we might be seeing in the Watters Cup final, but now, Rakaia must win if they have any hopes of making the final.

A shock loss to Celtic has left Rakaia in a pickle, needing to win their two remaining games to stand a chance of making the final.

Rakaia co-coach Wayne Foxcroft has a very simple view on the situation his side are in.

“It is a very important match, we lose another one, we are history,” he said.

“We know what to expect, they are a very forward orientated side so we have just got to be ready otherwise next week will be our last.” At the other end of the paddock, nothing is set in stone for Southern making the

final yet, but co-coach Michael Ellis will be hoping a few player milestones will give his players the motivational edge.

Club stalwart Jon Dampney will be playing his 199th match for Southern, while two other players will notch up their 100th and 50th games for the club.

“It will be a bloody tough battle and I suspect it is going to come down to who wants it more,” he said.

“They are in a must win situation if they want to make the final and if we can win it would probably guarantee us a spot in the final.”

Despite being so close to the final, Ellis said they are still taking each match one at a time, with the hope of taking momentum in to the final should they make it.

“We’ve just got to deal with this week and get stuck in to them,” he said.

In the other match, Hamp-

stead are likely to be thanking their lucky stars this Watters Cup campaign is over.

Struggling for players, it has been a tough three matches for co-coach Regan Broker, whose focus has now shifted to next year.

They will be facing off against Methven, for whom it seems unlikely they will make the final, but do have potential to throw a spanner in the mix come next week when they play Rakaia.

Celtic will sit out this week with a bye, but will likely be cheering on Southern to help their chances of making the final.

A low-key industry day, but with decent sized fields and competitive racing, the day went off

Dynamic beat off a strong field of open handicap gallopers in the Ashburton Winter Cup at a nice each-way dividend for punters, returning $7.40 for the win and $2.30 for the place.
