Player banned for ref abuse

A Hampstead rugby player has been banned from the game for 45 weeks for physically and verbally abusing a referee.

Mid Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Ian Patterson said the incident happened in the 79th minute of a senior B game between Hampstead and South-

ern at the Hinds domain last weekend.

Hampstead captain that day Siaosi Toese verbally abused referee Darryl McKibbon, then struck his hand after he pulled out a red card.

The incident happened immediately after an on-field scuffle.

Mr Patterson said the 45-week ban took Toese out of all forms of the game until May 14 next year.

He said it was a significant penalty for unacceptable behaviour.

“The message to anyone involved in the game of rugby is that referee abuse is not acceptable in any form, at any level.”

Half-price parking a ‘cop-out’

Get rid of Ashburton’s parking meters and the shoppers will come; continue with a pay and display regime and the town centre will die, say Ashburton’s retailers.

In their ongoing battle with the Ashburton District Council over the failing CBD parking meters, a delegation of retailers spoke to district councillors yesterday, reinforcing their plea for one-hour free parking. They also presented a petition that carried 2154 signatures, with additional support from 286 online signatures and 1180 Facebook likes.

The retailers spoke to the council in January, saying retail Ashburton was not in good shape.

Business owners were battling falling income on many fronts and one of those was the council’s failing parking meters, they said.

Yesterday retailer Tony Todd said that after talking to the council in January about ways to revitalise the CBD he was disappointed to read in the Guardian that the council’s response to a request that parking meters be removed was to suggest half-price parking instead.

come from left field. We requested the council to be proactive and this is a cop-out,” Mr Todd said.

Since that first meeting the retailers had investigated parking options around New Zealand and found there were many town centres where parking was either free or free for the first hour.

“We agree there would be some loss of revenue from parking but

that may be a small price to pay by the council for ensuring we have a vibrant heart in town,” he said.

The retailers are asking the council to remove all parking meters and to replace them with a one hour parking regime that uses a “smart meter’ imbedded in each parking space to monitor time. Once the one-hour limit had passed an alert would be sent to

a parking warden who could then issue a ticket.

The cost of each meter, installed, is about $375. The council has about 300 metered parks and at an all up cost of $112,500, paid out of the council’s $2.1 million parking reserve account, the investment was relatively small change, Mr Todd said.

“Don’t tell the residents of our

district you can’t afford to do this or that you’ll need to increase rates to cover it and don’t leave doing this until next year, it’s gone on too long now.”

The smart meters were a cheap fix that would have huge benefits and they would still ensure the council collected fines from over parkers and from wardens checking for registrations and warrants, he said.

A free parking trial was suggested but mayor Angus McKay decided a working group of four retailers and councillors should meet and come up with a way forward for the August 26 council meeting.

And that satisfied the retail delegation.

“I’m pretty happy with that; at least we finally have a time frame,” Mr Todd said.

Fewer dogs were offered but prices were up at PGG Wrightson’s 60th annual working dog sale, held at Tinwald yesterday.

In total 55 dogs went up for auction, with heading dogs accounting for about 40 of those.

The scene was set early in the sale, with a strong-eyed three-year-old heading dog offered by Terry Ponsonby knocked down to Rex McCone for $6500, busting last year’s top price of $5800 and setting the scene for a strong sale.

Little River farmer Ross Millar upped the ante taking the top price of $6600 and breaking the sale record, with his heading dog Sam. “It’s a good price. Sam’s a nice natured dog and at two-and-a-half years

old he has his life in front of him,” Mr Millar said.

Organiser Tom Simmons has been involved with the working dog sale for 22 years. He said declining sheep numbers had resulted in a reduction in the number of dogs offered, however the quality of those put up for sale had improved.

“Twenty years ago we would get 120 or 130 dogs registered for the sale.

Back then there was always strong demand for lambing dogs at this time of the year – there still is but nowhere near to the same extent,” he said.

Despite the declining numbers perspective buyers had travelled long distances to bid on the right dog, which is an invaluable asset on a farm, Peak Hill Station owner Stuart Millar said.

“It’s a strong sale this year with prices around where they should be – it takes a long time to train a dog to this level and a good dog does a lot of work – and they don’t mind working Sundays either.”

Retired farmer and veteran triallist Des Lysaght has 40-odd years’ experience in training working dogs under his belt and is a regular vendor at the sale. His four-year-old heading dog Pearl produced a very tidy run under good command and put $6000 in his pocket at the end of bidding.

Mr Lysaght recently moved into town and also needed to make room for up-and-coming younger dogs.

Huntaways fetched between $600 and $5500.

Special Olympics needs help

Special Olympics Ashburton are struggling to fund their players ahead of the regional games later this year.

The group is hoping to send four players to Nelson for the bocce games in November and four or five players to swimming

in Greymouth in October.

However, sending the players is all dependent on whether they are able to get enough money to pay for travel and accommodation.

President Colleen Lindsay said they have had to cut the threeday bocce tournament trip down to two days to save on costs be-

cause accommodation alone is $1100.

Mrs Lindsay said they are also struggling with volunteers to help out, there are only five people currently involved with Special Olympics Ashburton.

“It’s hard work when you’ve got so few people,” she said.

They have run several fun-

draisers so far this year, their most recent was a firewood raffle which ended this week.

Mrs Lindsay said the wood, worth about $400, was kindly donated to them.

Anyone who would like to donate or volunteer for Special Olympics Ashburton should call Mrs Lindsay on 03 308-4939.

From P1 Toese appeared before the Mid Canterbury union’s judiciary panel on Wednesday night and pleaded guilty to charges of verbal and physical abuse of a match official.

The panel heard evidence from the player, referee Mr McKibbon and considered the referee’s reports from the match.

The panel determined both physical and verbal abuse had occurred.

Mr Patterson said Toese acknowledged his actions totally inappropriate. He had simply lost control of himself in the heat of the moment.

The incident occurred immediately after an on-field scuffle between players of both teams.

Toese and the Southern captain had been called out by the referee to discuss player conduct, when Toese began to verbally abuse the referee.

He was shown a red card for his verbal abuse. He then struck out at the referee’s hand holding the card, striking it with some force.

Mr Patterson said the panel took the player’s remorse, admission of responsibility and clean disciplinary record into account when considering the sanction.

The offence was viewed in the mid-range.

Mr Patterson said the decision would be conveyed to rugby clubs around the district and sent a clear message that abuse of match officials was unacceptable.

“Referees are volunteers giving up their time so that others can enjoy the game they love. Hopefully this decision sends a clear message that abuse of match officials, indeed, abuse of any type, will not be tolerated in our game.”

Tough going on day one of YF contest Finalists found it tough going on day one of the Young Farmer contest It was a mind-numbing and mentally-challenging start to the Young Farmer of the Year with the seven grand finalists digging deep to complete a complex series of technical challenges yesterday.

The contest kicked off on South Canterbury’s Raincliff Station yesterday and winners will be announced at a gala event on Saturday evening.

Technical challenge convener and former grand finalist Julian Gaffaney said yesterday’s tasks were well suited to contestants capable of working through them logically and methodically.

“There were lots of difficult tasks that juggled their heads.”

Among the challenges contestants were asked to develop a dairy heifer grazing system with Farmax Software, complete an irrigation share purchase on a development block, along with various components of a farm environment plan.

Meanwhile, New Zealand Young Farmers is defending TVNZ’s decision to screen the grand final a week later, following criticism from a leading agricultural broadcaster.

Jamie Mackay slammed TVNZ this week for allowing the contest to be pushed back in its schedules and called for a national protest through Twitter.

NZYF CEO Terry Copeland said the preference was to screen the show on a Saturday night in a 7pm timeslot, however that had not been the reality for some time and audience ratings had been low with the available 10.30pm screening time.

“So on balance, screening at 4pm a week later on a Sunday afternoon to expected ratings of 150,000 was better than the 35,000 we were attracting in the 10.30pm timeslot,” he said.

Mr Copeland said the decision, which had been made by Young Farmers, also meant lower production costs for the organisation, which had received no funding from NZ On Air this year.

Borough students lead production The Jungle Book came alive at Ashburton Borough School this week with a Year 7 and 8 production.

Area leader Emma Hewett said the students spent Term 2 working on the show, which was completely student led, for their inquiry into how they express themselves, with the central idea being how stories

can be told through different forms.

The students did the acting, set design and production all themselves, she said.

“The students took ownership of it.”

The show was performed on Wednesday afternoon and evening and last night with the evening shows nearly sold out.

Farmers to measure water use Environment Canterbury is rounding up water consentholders without water meters, and issuing abatement and infringement notices.

ECan staff have spent the past two months making contact with 500 water consent-holders throughout the region who had not provided evidence of a water measuring system. Water takes over 10 litres per second must have a meter and provide data about daily water use.

Of the 500 contacted, 63 were

now compliant; 45 abatement notices had been issued, along with one infringement notice (which incurs a fine).

ECan spokesperson Nadeine Dommisse said all the consent holders had either agreed to an action plan to install a water meter or had 10 days to provide evidence that action was being taken to avoid further enforcement action.

“It is the consent-holders’ responsibility to ensure they are complying with their consent

conditions to measure and manage water takes.

“What we have found that once contacted, many people took action immediately or provided evidence they had a plan in place to install the necessary equipment and systems.”

ECan made contact in May and June with the 500 outstanding water consent-holders who had not provided evidence they had installed a water measuring system. Around 5400 (or 90 per cent) of the 5900 water consent-

holders in Canterbury) had already provided evidence they complied with the regulations.

“We have been working closely with farmers and industry groups over the past couple of years so that consent-holders know what v they need to do and where to go to get advice. Over the past few months our focus has been on dealing with the relatively small proportion of people who had not complied with their consent conditions or the national metering regulations.”

A faulty light switch in Terrace View Retirement home was the cause of a fire brigade call-out on Wednesday night. The light switch malfunctioned and overheated. Station officer Chris Price said staff did the right thing by isolating the area and an electrician was in later that evening to fix the switch.

Less than 24 hours after Cheviot man Raymond Burnett died in a house fire, a Kaiapoi family fled their burning property after smoke alarms sounded. A Fire Service spokesman said the two-storey Sidey Quay house was extensively damaged in the blaze, which started around 11.30pm. The fire was not believed to be suspicious.

Cafe out, museum space in

Ashburton’s art and heritage centre has a café space that noone wants.

For almost two years complex owner the Ashburton District Council has struggled to find anyone keen to take up a lease on the small hospitality space.

Now it has abandoned the exercise.

The building was designed with a small area fronting West Street tagged for a café. Today that space is unfinished, unused and sits vacant in spite of several efforts by the council to find a tenant.

One of the complex’s tenants, the museum has come up with a

solution, one that director Tanya Robinson says will significantly increase her team’s ability to showcase the Ashburton District.

While the museum has a superb static display area, it was unable to mount changing exhibitions or to host travelling exhibitions, Ms Robinson said.

“We have a budget to exhibit but not the space to do this and we’re missing out on the potential to share our stories with others,” she said.

While there might be some support for a café, a large number of museums and art galleries operated successfully without one, but most unlike Ashburton, most had sufficient space for

changing exhibitions, Ms Robinson said. “We have unused and unwanted space in our building and it’s space we can use.”

That space needed to be lined but the museum’s committee would be prepared to source funds for this, she said.

At yesterday’s service delivery meeting, councillor Darryl Nelson supported her request, suggesting the space was better used for exhibitions than a café.

While most of his fellow councillors supported the museum using the space, they wanted to be assured it could revert back to a café if the right operator came along.

“This space has been unused for 18 months. The museum

has lots of exciting ideas how to use this space and I don’t think we should be sitting around any longer waiting for a café operator. Until that café can use outside space I don’t think it will be viable and there’s not much chance of that,” councillor Alan Totty said.

Apart from councillor Donna Favel who wanted to consult with the complex’s other tenant the art gallery, councillors agreed they’d hit the wall in finding a café tenant.

They decided the space could be used by the museum and fitted out at its expense but that it would revert back to a café if an operator came along in the future.

Exhibit rocks A new Ashburton Museum exhibit promises to keep children entertained over the school holidays.

The Paper, Scissors, Rock! exhibition, opening tomorrow, has been designed as a trail for children to play with vintage toys, crafts and games.

“Kids of all ages will find something to enjoy from this exhibition and we can’t wait for it to open,” museum director Tanya Robinson said.

Ms Robinson said the idea for the exhibition came from the museum’s wide range of past exhibits and archived material.

“We have all these collections of games and puzzles and we started off thinking about all the things made with paper, scissors and rocks and it just became the perfect opportunity,” Ms Robinson said.

Ashburton Museum has tens of thousands of items in its archives, making it one of the largest museum collections in the South Island.

Paper, Scissors, Rock! opens on tomorrow and closes October 10.

A helping hand for families in need

A new volunteer has joined the SEEDS team to provide struggling Ashburton parents with support.

Sharing Everyday Experiences and Drawing on Skills (SEEDS) is a family wellbeing initiative to provide parents with the support and experience to raise a family.

The volunteers are trained and bring their own experiences of raising a family and can provide skills like cooking a healthy meal, budgeting and housekeeping.

New volunteer Stacey Jessup has been working with SEEDS for only a few weeks, but she is looking forward to helping others out.

“I joined just to help people and share experience and meet new people and try to make a difference,” she said.

Mrs Jessup heard about SEEDS through her mother-in-law, who is also a volunteer with the group.

Mother-in-law Sue Claridge joined SEEDS 18 months ago.

Volunteer Janet Hadley said she is now in her second year with the group and the work is very worthwhile.

She said some want to learn to cook a good nutritional meal while others may need help because they’re struggling with a child’s behaviour.

A good result from a bad deal Sue Newman

I

n theory, a café in Ashburton’s art and heritage centre is a great idea.

There’s a captive market from gallery and museum visitors and there’s every reason to expect that having such a facility would mean people would linger longer in the building.

When the centre was built, however, there were a host of issues in play that meant to even get a stake in the ground, the Ashburton District Council had to jump through hoops to get a resource consent signed off.

The building’s neighbours were not happy with many aspects of the project and among those was the prospect of having a café on their doorstep – in reality it was down the road and around the corner.

It appears distance did not matter. If the café was to open for business they demanded tight operating hours and insisted that no outdoor dining space could be used, even though that space would have fronted busy State Highway 1.

To get the deal signed off the council had to make concessions. It did and the end result has been a café space that noone wanted.

The council has managed to salvage something out of the café debacle and it’s signed a deal with the museum that it can occupy the area against the day a café tenant surfaces who is prepared to accommodate the rigorous trading conditions.

Our museum, fantastic as it is, has been designed to be a static display. It is worth many visits, but like anything that is unchanging, eventually you’ve seen it all. With the new space available, we will now be on the list for touring exhibitions and it will mean new opportunities to showcase some of the many items hiding in storage in a range of changing exhibitions.

Many of those when mounted together as a collection will tell some of the unique stories of our district’s past.

That there was no space for changing exhibitions allowed in the museum’s design, that objectors could play such a significant part in determining how a café could or could not do business are in the past. What is good, is that out of those negatives something positive has been salvaged.

YOUR VIEW Online petitions The “petition” accepted by Cr Cutforth last week is, potentially, a giant fraud.

The reason for saying that is that anyone can fill in anything in the “First Name”, “Last Name” and “Post Code” boxes in the online form.

The “Email” box requires something that looks like an email address.

I “signed” the petition a few minutes ago by filling each box with “???” to the capacity of the box and the email address with “someone@somewhere.com”.

My “signature” was accepted and has been added to the total.

The danger is not in some sceptic like me playing around

and adding the odd false entry.

No, it is with the bored teenager, or someone else with different motives, and basic programming skills.

With the right, relatively simple, programme I, or anyone, could add thousands of apparently legitimate entries at the touch of a button.

These could only be checked by emailing each entry – a huge task for the target organisation, in this case the Ashburton District Council.

Given that there are simple, and cheap, defences against such manipulation you have to ask why the organisers don’t use these measures. The answer has to be that they don’t care. Their focus is in taking the moral high

ground, gathering huge numbers of “names” and putting pressure on their target.

Given that their “petitions” are so open to manipulation and given that there are simple and cheap methods of stopping such activity, I view them as being irresponsible almost to the point of being criminal.

Harsh judgment? I don’t think so. If they wish to use the internet for their political activities then they should follow good practice.

And these are very internet savvy people – they know exactly what they are doing.

The council should reject this thing out of hand. Either that or Cr Cutforth as the protagonist could do the checking!

I have had an awesome week, in fact it has been tau ke (mean).

Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori or Maori Language week has taken me well out of my comfort zone!

A little over a year ago I sat next to Te Hurinui Renata Karaka – Clarkie or Brian Clarke as most people around here know him as – during a spin class and he told me about his role at Canterbury University as a Maori language tutor.

Maori Language Week was approaching and I hatched a plan to get him in the studio for some Te Reo tips. After meeting some resistance from above me about mass appeal last year, I have bypassed those hurdles this year and picked up the ball and run with it.

Each day this week Te Hurinui has popped into the studio at 8am to pass on some pointers, some Te Reo tips.

Monday he told us the awesome story behind his name Te Hurinui and we learned about the Maori vowels and some basic pronunciation skills.

Te Hurinui also did an acknowledgement to “our ancestors for maintaining our language and passing it on to us for our children and younger generations. Also to those who fought to get Maori language the recognition it deserves”. I have to say I was blown away by how beautiful the language is.

We have learnt about greetings and farewells ( I feel like I’m back at school doing a presentation), how to ask someone how they are doing and suitable replies to that question.

Yesterday was all about colloquial statements and today proverbs.

I am pretty sure I am the worst student Te Hurinui has ever come across and that includes his several years teaching at Ashburton College. But as he said, just like when you visit France, if you give the language a good crack then the locals will appreciate it.

We have had some good laughs this week, usually at my expense,

Report damns former UK PM Prime Minister Tony Blair led Britain into an unsuccessful war in Iraq through a mix of flawed intelligence, “wholly inadequate” planning and an exaggerated sense of the UK’s ability to influence the United States, according to a damning official report on the conflict that was published Tuesday.

The government-commissioned inquiry fell short of delivering what many bereaved families sought — a declaration that the 2003 war was illegal. But it gave the most comprehensive verdict to date on the mistakes of a conflict whose violent aftershocks still rattle the world.

Blair, however, stood by his decision to join US President George W Bush in toppling Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

“I believe I made the right decision and that the world is better and safer as a result of it,” he said.

The decision to go to war was the most contentions act of Blair’s decade as prime minister between 1997 and 2007.

The inquiry, which was headed by retired civil servant John Chilcot, concluded

An emotional but defiant Blair told a news conference that going to war in Iraq was “the hardest, most momentous, most agonising decision I took” as prime minister.

He said that “I express more sorrow, regret and apology than you may ever know, or can believe,” for all the things that went wrong.

He said the world was a safer place without Saddam.

Family members who were shown the report three hours before it was published, said “we must use this report to make sure all parts of the Iraq fiasco are never repeated again.”

“Never again must so many mistakes be allowed to sacrifice British lives and lead to the destruction of a country for no positive end,” a group of families said in a statement.

British seeking EU passports

Multi-national crew for space station A three-member multinational crew has blasted off aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket from Kazakhstan for a two-day trip to the International Space Station, a NASA TV broadcast showed.

NASA astronaut Kathleen “Kate” Rubins, Russian cosmonaut Anatoly Ivanishin and Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome mid-week.

The crew is due to arrive later this week at the station, which orbits about 400km above earth, to begin a four-month mission.

The inquiry was set up in 2009 by then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was under pressure for a public accounting of the conflict.

The report also provides a sobering assessment of the power imbalance in the transAtlantic “special relationship.”

The report found failings by British military chiefs who did not provide adequate equipment to UK forces.

Chilcot also criticised spy chiefs who failed to ensure their partial intelligence about Saddam’s weapons was not hardened into certainty by government spin.

While the report may help Britain draw a line under a difficult national episode, it offers little comfort for Iraq.

“Since 2003 until now, our country has been a scene of destruction, killing, massacres, explosions and sectarianism,” Baghdad resident Ali al-Saraji said.

More UK citizens are researching their family histories online in the hopes of securing an EU passport, despite voting to Brexit.

New trial memberships on genealogy website Ancestry surged by 40 per cent in the week after the UK voted to leave the European Union.

Sue Moncur, Ancestry UK country manager, said the website had also seen a 20 per cent rise in daily searches for Irish records.

“The question of British identity has been brought into focus for many because

of the referendum,” she said.

The trend followed a flood of applications for Irish passports by eligible UK citizens, with post offices in Northern Ireland struggling to keep the application forms in stock.

Six million Brits are reportedly eligible for Irish passports.

In order to qualify for Irish citizenship, a person must be born on the island of Ireland or have Irish parents.

In some cases, those with an Irish grandparent are also eligible.

Stars sing for Orlando Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Selena Gomez are among the stars who have joined forces for a new charity single that will raise money for the victims of the Orlando nightclub shootings in the US state of Florida. A total of 24 artists feature on the track entitled Hands, which is being released

by Interscope Records following the mass shooting in Orlando on June 12 where 49 people were killed at Pulse, a gay nightclub. Proceeds from the single will be donated to families of the victims of the attack, to help with medical care, counselling and also to educate others on gun control.

New Iron Man to be black And female. A black female teenager will be the new Iron Man. Marvel Comics veteran writer Brian Michael Bendis said in an interview with Time that Tony Stark will step away from his superhero alter-ego and a new character named Riri Williams will assume the laser-blasting role. Bendis describes Williams as a science genius who enrolled in MIT at the age of 15.

Williams comes to Stark’s attention when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm. Marvel has bestowed several diverse characters in recent years with long-running superhero mantles, including a biracial Spider-Man, Muslim Ms Marvel, female Thor, African-American Captain America and Asian-American Hulk. However, those characters have yet to appear in Marvel film or TV adaptations. Williams will debut in Invincible Iron Man comic book this fall.

But the Management LTI Plan means that 100 per cent of the rights vest automatically under a change in control such as the Allnex bid.

payout of $10,358,148 if the deal is completed as expected in midAugust.

Documents presented to shareholders prior to the vote said the total amount paid to the other scheme participants will be around $3.3 million and will be a cost to the new owner.

Around 177 Nuplex executives and managers also participate in a short-term incentive plan under which around $10 million is being paid out on in the 2016 financial year just ended.

In addition, Severin already holds 772,746 Nuplex shares which he’ll get paid out on and under the terms of his employment contract, he’ll receive a $1.23 million “loyalty payment” if he loses his job within six months of a change of control of the company.

The board could also decide to make him a pro-rated payment under the STI plan from the start of the new financial year to when he was asked to leave.

This is up from 18 per cent and 6 per cent respectively in March.

However, due to the survey being conducted prior to the European Union referendum, it is likely to be less useful as a gauge into economic sentiment in New Zealand.

Dairy exporter, Fonterra, reported a 0.4 per cent fall in dairy prices at the latest GlobalDairyTrade auction.

Whole milk powder prices which have the greatest bearing on Fonterra’s farmgate milk price fell 1.6 per cent, while skim milk powder prices, another key product, rose 2.6 per cent.

Among the other products, butter milk powder prices dropped by 7.5 per cent, while butter dropped by 3.1 per cent.

In Australia the Reserve Bank of Australia held its key cash rate steady at a record-low 1.75 per cent, which had been widely anticipated.

The August meeting is still seen as a more natural time for a follow-up rate cut, if one is forthcoming, because by then the second-quarter inflation data will be available, this is due late July.

The market week in review he New Zealand stock market has managed to shake off tumultuous global markets and their Brexit related fears to trade at record levels this week, continuing its strong run.

The Australian share market hasn’t fared quite as well, as Australia like Europe and Britain, have had their own share of political turmoil, albeit not quite as bad.

This week investors in Australia faced political uncertainty and the potential of a hung parliament or a minority government following Saturday’s unresolved federal election.

This has weighed on market sentiment and the local S&P/ ASX 200 is currently lower for the week.

The European and UK markets have had a mixed week as Brexit volatility concerns reared up.

Banks have been hit particularly hard, with several European banks at all-time lows.

Investors are concerned about low interest rates and the outlook for the regional economy after the UK leaves the European Union.

Under heavy pressure to react to the June 23 vote, both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank are expected to provide more stimulus in the coming months and investors are expecting a rate cut next Thursday when the Bank of England is set to meet.

If John Key was trying to hurry the Bank to hit investors with tougher lending restrictions, he has been ignored.

With comments this week – that the Reserve Bank “should just get on with it” – John Key did manage to build plenty of hype around deputy governor Grant Spencer’s speech to New Zealand Institute of Valuers in Wellington last night.

But the Bank, quite rightly, didn’t respond to political pressure.

In fact, in a sign of growing tension with Government, Spencer hit back suggesting it might want to take a look at its migration policy – which it cites as driving strong housing demand – and ongoing housing supply shortfalls.

Anyone expecting policy details or even timing details of LVRs or proposed Debt to Income Ratios will have been disappointed.

Emery Severin, chief executive of resins company Nuplex Industries, is due a $10.3 million cash payout following a shareholder vote in favour of a $1 billion proposed takeover by private equity-backed Belgian company Allnex.

At a special shareholders meeting held in Auckland yesterday, 98 per cent of the votes cast were in favour of the deal, with institutional shareholders overriding a desire of smaller long-term shareholders to hang in there.

College four make All-Stars

Ashburton College will be well represented at the high school East v West All-Star basketball matches played at Cowles Stadium in Christchurch this evening.

Ashlee Strawbridge and Libby Ross’ fine performances have earned them selection to the girls’ West Whelan All-Star team.

Strawbridge’s All-Star inclusion rounds off a fine season.

The Year 10 student recently returned from playing for New Zealand under-16 A at the Medibank Classic in Melbourne and has been in excellent form for the College seniors in the Whelan Trophy competition.

Meanwhile Mid Canterbury age-group rep Libby Ross has been as consistent as ever for the senior side.

Josh Lowe, who also plays for the Lincoln University Development team, was set to turn out for the West team in the boys’ Thompson Trophy All-Star clash but has since been forced to withdraw due to an ankle complaint.

In Lowe’s absence, Fletcher Arnold will be the only Ashburton College boy in action this evening.

Arnold is part of the Mainland Eagles Academy and was picked up for the Canterbury under-17 rep B team that will be heading to nationals later this month.

Ashburton College Senior Girls’ and player development coach Andrew Shepherd said the selection of four players to their respective All-Star teams in a reflection of the teams’ hard work and dedication throughout the season.

“We’re extremely proud of how both our teams are performing in their respective competitions,” he said.

“To have four players selected for All Star honours just shows the hard work these students are putting in.”

Greyhounds shut down Greyhound racing is to be shut down in New South Wales following the livebaiting scandal. Premier Mike Baird announced the decision yesterday, saying that the industry will be closed completely from July next year. It follows a Special Commission of Inquiry, the findings of which were handed to the state government last week. The ABC uncovered the livebaiting scandal last year, showing disturbing footage of live animals being used to train greyhounds.

Federer turns on stunning comeback Roger Federer has staged a miraculous fightback to reach a record-equalling 11th Wimbledon semi-final on another historymaking day for the incomparable Swiss.

The seven-times champion saved three match points in rallying from two sets down to deny Marin Cilic 6-7 (4-7) 4-6 6-3 7-6 (11-9) 6-3 in a quarter-final thriller at the All England Club.

The epic three-hour, 18-minute victory booked Federer a lastfour date with Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic, who ended Sam Querrey’s giantkilling run with a 6-4 7-5 5-7 6-4 win earlier yesterday.

Federer gained the decisive break in the eighth game of the deciding set before closing it out with his 27th ace.

“A lot happened out there,” said the jubilant third seed after matching Jimmy Connors’ 11

semi-final matches at Wimbledon.

“Marin’s such a wonderful player. I knew I was in so much trouble in the third and again the fourth.

“It was about staying in the match and getting a little bit lucky, and that’s what happened.

“Obviously the breaker was crazy. It was an incredible match.”

Next up is Raonic in a rematch of their 2014 semi-final, which the Swiss won in straight sets.

“It’s a well deserved win for me and to get another shot at the semi-finals,” Raonic said after removing Novak Djokovic’s thirdround conqueror from the draw.

College girls go on try-fest

Ashburton College Girls’ 1st XV took a convincing 50-14 win over Roncalli College on Wednesday evening at their Aoraki secondary schools’ girls’ rugby clash in Timaru.

After avenging their first loss of the season against Waitaki Girls’ High School in their last outing, Ashburton were determined to add another win to their already impressive tally ahead of the upcoming two-week break.

College went into the sheds with a 24-7 lead and poured on another 26 points in the second half with four tries from Erana Te Moananui, two from sister Chloe and one each from Kate Donald and Piper Jones.

Donald also slotted five conver-

sions for an individual haul of 15 points.

Despite the one-sided score line, co-coach Grant Elvines credited the depleted Roncalli side for their efforts.

“It was a hard game, I think we made hard work of it,” said Elvines.

“Roncalli played really well, they were down on numbers but were very competitive in the rucks and mauls.”

Elvines said there is still room for improvement before the competition returns in a fortnight’s time, but was pleased with his players’ performance.

The Crusaders and the Highlanders are both top five teams. kick off in Buenos Aires a week later knowing exactly what they have to do – and it may be they can even lose and still secure a No1 finish.

After 15 rounds it’s a legitimate question to ask how there can be an injustice if the Lions top the ladder?

Surely they will have earned that ranking?

They have played well but their schedule has been a massive factor in that.

The Lions are in a pool with the Sharks, who lie ninth, the Jaguares who are 14th and Kings who sit 17th.

They get to play each of these teams twice, plus one game each against the Stormers, who sit third by virtue of leading their conference but are actually seventh if measured on total points accrued; the Bulls, who are 10th, the Cheetahs who are 15th and Sunwolves who are 18th.

Compare this with the route taken by the New Zealand sides who would sit, on a true table, in positions two (Chiefs), three (Crusaders), four (Hurricanes) and five (Highlanders).

The difference in scheduling is stark – a point conceded by Sanzaar boss Andy Marinos last

week when he said all the thinking around future expansion had integrity of the competition as a priority.

The feedback from players and coaches on the existing setup has been clear – that real or perceived there is a sense among those who matter that the battle to reach the playoffs through the New Zealand Conference is considerably harder than it is by coming through Africa.

The best example to justify that argument is not the Lions – who beat the Chiefs in Hamilton and stack as a genuine contender – but the Stormers, haven’t appealed as a serious force on any level.

And yet, despite looking like a classic mid-table side, the Stormers are going to be hosting a home quarter-final while three of the four New Zealand sides will have to travel.

And when the stats are crunched, they show the value of playing at home in the playoffs is enormous: in 70 knock-out fixtures since 1996, the away team has won only 14 times.

Now is not the time to agitate or worry about it, but once the dust settles in August, New Zealand’s Super Rugby teams will press their point that it felt like they played all the rugby in 2016 and got none of the rewards.

Tough road for NZ Super Rugby sides The ill-conceived nature of Super Rugby is going to become apparent in the next few weeks and it will be the New Zealand teams who feel the greatest sense of injustice.

The best five teams – those which have played the most consistent, high quality rugby – would be the Chiefs, Crusaders, Highlanders, Hurricanes and Lions.

The much-improved Lions, for all that they have broken their shackles and played with a joie de vivre that has been as surprising as it has been welcome, would sit, on a subjective assessment, as fifth in that esteemed group.

And yet, they are the team in control of the competition and the side most likely to top the overall table and have home advantage guaranteed if they can keep winning in the playoffs.

They are a point ahead of the Chiefs but the Lions finish with the Kings at home and Jaguares away.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, have the Reds and Highlanders away; while the Crusaders have the Rebels and Hurricanes at home.

Haimona returns Kelly Haimona is coming home.

The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union announced yesterday that Haimona has returned to the region and has signed with the union for the next two Mitre 10 Cup seasons. Haimona, 29, has recently returned from Italy, to play for his local club Whakarewarewa. Haimona left in 2011 to play club rugby in Italy and earned selection in the Italian national side, La Squadra Azzurra, in 2014, playing 11 tests and scoring 65 points.

Crunch time in Watters Cup

The penultimate Watters Cup round robin matches will be played tomorrow with three teams gunning for a top-of-thetable finish and an automatic place in the 2016 final.

The new format of the competition will pit the second and third-placed teams against each other in a playoff for a final berth on July 23.

Celtic, who have the bye tomorrow, are currently at the top of the Watters Cup ladder on 11 points.

Shane Enright’s side took maximum points from their first two

outings against Hampstead and Methven, before a 38-28 loss to reigning champions Rakaia last weekend – but their four tries did secure the bonus point.

The greens’ time at the top will be short-lived, though, with Rakaia set to host Southern tomorrow.

Southern and Rakaia sit in second and third places respectively on 10 points having won both of their games so far.

Whichever team takes the win will propel themselves to the points table’s summit.

In the afternoon’s opposite Watters Cup fixture, Hampstead will host Methven in a dead-rubber match.

By Ed Jackson Supercars championship leader Jamie Whincup says his impressive history at Townsville counts for nothing this weekend.

The Holden ace has claimed seven race wins on the streets of the north Queensland city in the 15 races the category has held at the event since 2009.

But Whincup says history means nothing as he prepares for the two 200km races on the Reid Park circuit.

“I’ve had a great run in the past but I had a shocker there last year,” Whincup told AAP. “I didn’t piece it together at all.”

Whincup said he was undeserving of the championship lead after moving to top spot in the standings after last month’s event in Darwin.

It’s a belief he’s standing by heading into Townsville.

“We’ve got so much potential for Car 88,” he said.

“I’ve got some of the best engineers, I’ve got the best mechanics and all the resources in the world at Red Bull Racing for us to do a good job.

“I just don’t feel like we’re really maximising that for one reason or another.

“I just feel like we haven’t done a good job so we certainly don’t deserve to be in the lead.”

Defending Supercars champion Mark Winterbottom claimed both races in Townsville last year on his way to a maiden title.

Whincup says while championship talk is premature ahead of this year’s endurance races, this weekend’s event still represents a crucial juncture in what has been the most competitive Supercars title race in memory.

“No doubt the other guys will piece it together as well so if we don’t piece it together then we’ll get left behind,” Whincup said.

“It’s a bit of a turning point for us at the moment.

“We’ve really got to step up, make the most of our year or be prepared for it to dwindle away.”

The Townsville 400 begins today with two practice sessions before a 200km race each on Saturday and Sunday.

Reds’ secret weapon James Slipper has backed star Queensland Reds rookie Taniela Tupou to successfully ambush Super Rugby title favourites the Chiefs when he comes off the bench tonight. After an impressive Super Rugby debut last week, the ‘Tongan Thor’ looms as Queensland’s secondhalf secret weapon for the Suncorp Stadium clash with his powerful ball running and incredible 130kg frame.

“Most of us at the Reds don’t enjoy tackling him. He’s a big boy,” Slipper said yesterday.

Methven retain their unbeaten tag Methven saw off a defiant Hampstead last night to remain undefeated in the ACL Premier Netball Grade’s trophy round.

The reigning champions led by two at the end of the first quarter, but Hampstead battled

back to lead 14-12 at half-time.

Methven came out firing in third quarter, though, to outscore Cindy Meadow’s ladies 7-4 and continued to dominate in the final stanza for a 26-21 victory.

In the other 6:30pm fixture, at the EA Networks Center, Ashburton College were far too good on the night for Southern.

College were 10-5 up after 10 minutes and 21-10 ahead at halftime.

Southern couldn’t find any answers in the game’s second half as College ran out 43-19 winners.

Teen queens set to duel The teenagers at the top of women’s golf, Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson, form a mutual admiration society and a burgeoning rivalry that will feature at the US Women’s Open.

World No.1 Ko of New Zealand and second-ranked Canadian Henderson, one year younger at 18, have won the year’s first two majors and tee off together in the first round of the Open at CordeValle.

The Korean-born Ko won the Ana Inspiration in March

and Henderson claimed her first major last month at the Women’s PGA Championship.

Henderson followed up her major triumph by repeating as Portland Classic champion last week. Ko won the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in her last tour start.

“Lydia Ko is amazing,” Henderson told reporters when asked about the tour’s youth movement.

“She’s an inspiration to all of us girls out here, and I think everyone in the world.”

Lee helps flood victims

Ko, who won the 2012 Canadian Women’s Open LPGA event at age 15 and last year at 17 became the youngest player ever to ascend to golf’s world No.1, is a fan of Henderson.

“She’s an aggressive player, but at the same time she’s smart.

“And I think she’s one of the most confident putters out there, too,” Ko said.

Danny Lee is giving financial support to the flood-plagued region of West Virginia where he hoped to defend his Greenbrier Classic title this week.

The Greenbrier has been cancelled and the Kiwi number one will now tune up for the British Open by teeing off in the Scottish Open. Lee will donate US$500 for every birdie and US$1000 for every eagle he makes to victims of the natural disaster. He says despite the disappointment of not defending his title, he’s excited to be in Scotland playing on a links course.
