The special education system is in complete disarray, according to the president of the Mid Canterbury Principals Association.

Schools are having to fund extra teacher aides and special education support themselves, putting a dent in their operating budgets, Chris Murphy says.

A lot of local schools are unhappy with the special education system as it stands, he said yesterday.

“The special education grant in our operations budget barely touches the sides,” he said.

However the Ministry of Education believes special education funding is adequate.

Head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said special education funding has increased by 29 per cent in the last six years.

Special education funding now stands at more than $530 million, she said.

“However we recognise there is more work to be done to ensure children with special needs are well supported in the education system,” she said.

Mr Murphy said funding seems to be constantly taking a step backwards.

“I think by and large, principals in

schools feel that inclusive education is the way forward, it is important, but it’s also important that the ministry recognise the extra challenges that schools face,” he said.

He said schools were sinking a lot of resources into the sector, but he recognised that it was not enough.

“And then at what point do you say ‘well, we’re actually funding this to the detriment of the other children’,” he said. “It’s really not fair, it’s not equitable.”

What appears to be a national shortage of pool noodles has left holiday programme conveners seeking alternative plans for kids’ activities. The pool noodle shortage was brought to the attention of Kidz Workz Ministriez after they were unable to source any pool noodles for their space-themed craft activities for their school holiday programme.

Kidz Workz Ministriez team leader Brad McLaren made a public announcement on June 29 in an attempt to locate the pool toys in the Wairarapa. “We were hoping in one of the craft sessions to have the kids make light sabres out of those coloured pool noodles, however The Warehouse has just told me that there are none in the country,” he said. The team’s creative administrator Kat Sprowson said they also looked on both The Warehouse and K-Mart websites but the product was sold out nationally on both.

Load up on mushrooms People should be heaping mushrooms onto their plates this winter to avoid becoming vitamin D deficient, growers say.

The Australian Mushroom Growers Association has commissioned its own research to prove what nutritionists have known for years - that mushrooms are a great source of vitamin D when people aren’t getting enough from the sun.

The research, which has been vetted by Food Standards Australia New Zealand, shows one serve of mushrooms bought in a store can provide 20 per cent of an adult’s daily vitamin D needs.

Punters back third child Punters are betting on a third child for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, despite Princess Charlotte only being nine weeks old. Bookmakers Coral say bets on a new royal baby soared in the run-up to the princess’s christening on Sunday, and the company has now set out the odds on when William and Kate will announce another child is on the way. The couple are widely expected to have more than two children. The Duchess is one of three and had a happy home life with sister Pippa and brother James.

It has led to speculation that the Cambridges will have three children, or maybe even four like the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Next year is the favourite for an announcement at 6-4, while 2017 is 2-1, 2018 and not before 2019 are both 4-1, and there are long odds of 33-1 that Kate announces she is expecting again this year.

Dalai Lama turns 80 The 14th Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, has turned 80 surrounded by admirers at a public summit in southern California. The Dalai Lama, whose name is Tenzin Gyatso, celebrated at the Global Compassion Summit, a three-day conference in the cities of Anaheim and Irvine. The monk spent the day as the guest of honour at public discussion panels on the subjects of climate change action and “wisdom, vision and experience” at the University of California, Irvine.

He was lauded by admirers from Nobel laureate Jody Williams to singer Gloria Estefan and applauded by the more than 5000 people in the audience. At the conference’s start the day before, thousands of fans sang Happy Birthday as the spiritual leader blew out candles on a towering golden cake, then cut himself a slice. His birthday wish was “the same as all beings. I wish to live a happy life,” he said, according to his website.

Laser pointer threat The safety of tourists flying into Bali is at risk from the sale of laser pointers on a beach near the airport’s runway. Each evening, along the popular Jimbaran beach restaurant strip, hawkers sell the devices for as little as $12. Children run around flashing the laser pointers wildly. The beach is just a few kilometres from the Denpasar airport - the third busiest in Indonesia. About a million Australians travel to Indonesia each year and the majority visit Bali. An Australian pilot with 40 years of experience, who has flown into Bali regularly, warns laser pointers pose an enormous safety risk.

The light can cause flash blindness that might take up to 25 seconds from which to recover, and is especially dangerous when pilots are approaching the airport.

What many people do not realise is that the beam disperses over a distance, the pilot says.

Talking trade with China

Farming, education and tourism are the business triangle that will forge stronger social and economic links between China and New Zealand, People’s Republic of China Consul General Jin Zhijian says.

Mr Zhijian spent several hours in Ashburton yesterday visiting engineering, honey and small seed companies. It was his first visit to the district but he said he was well aware of its reputation as a place with a rapidly growing economy.

“My responsibility is to get to know this district better and then to explore the area for better links between Ashburton and China. I believe there are many things we could do together,” Mr Zhijian said.

He could see continuing growth in agriculture, while education and tourism were areas where new and strong links could be forged. “We already have very successful students on exchange programmes and

The bodies of Cindy George and her three children have been returned to their family.

Ms George, 31, and her three young children were found dead in a house on Thomson St in Tinwald last Thursday.

Post mortems were carried out on the victims earlier this week, with a preliminary report confirming that carbon monoxide poisoning after a car was left running in an adjacent garage was likely the cause of death. He said Pio enjoyed school and had many friends there.

“She will be sadly missed by her classmates and staff throughout the school.” Mr Winterbourn described Ms George as a loving mum who took an active interest in her children’s education. The school was providing support for any families who wanted assistance.

Mid-South Canterbury Inspector Dave Gaskin told media yesterday that the school tried to contact the family when Pio did not turn up, to no avail.

Ashburton, however, was already well placed through its sister city relationship with Puyang to have a target market in an area where scale was more manageable, he said.

During the Midlands Apairies visit, he was impressed with the opportunities to increase both the quality and quantity of manuka honey being exported to China to the health sector.

Midlands director Duncan Storrier said only 15 to 20 per cent of his company’s honey export went to China, but that he could see many more opportunities, particularly at the high end of the market.

“For us the key is finding our point of difference.

“There is no advantage in being another company simply selling honey into China. Manuka honey is New Zealand’s story,” he said.

People have also been dropping off blankets and food to the Tinwald Scout Hall, where members of Mid Canterbury’s Cook Islands community have been preparing to farewell Ms George and her children.

The service will be held at the Tinwald War Memorial Hall, however Ms George and the children will first be taken to the scout hall where members of the Tiare Maori cultural group will form a guard of honour in respect of their former member.

Determination needed for circus performance

Want to run away to the circus?

Well you will have to have plenty of determination to make that dream work.

Besides athleticism, determination and a capacity for hard work are important attributes for circus performers, says Circus Allsorts spokesperson Mim Syme.

She was in Ashburton yesterday with seven performers preparing for a death-defying show at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre last night.

“To make it in circus you have to work very, very hard, it’s an incredibly hard industry to get into because so many people dream of doing it,” Ms Syme said.

Aerialist Yulia Borodin agreed, but added a passion for the craft also helped. “I love it, it’s really a dream come true to be doing this,” she said as she prepared for rehearsals with aerial silks.

Circus Allsorts tours Canterbury, and after last night’s Ashburton show will perform in Christchurch tomorrow night.

Ms Syme and her husband Danny developed Circus Allsorts last year as owners of Christchurch circus company Circotica.

A young woman who died in a farm accident in Southland has been named by police. A family member found Rebecca Anne Cunningham Byars, 32, lying in a winter feed paddock on a farm in Kaiwera on Monday afternoon.

Ms Byars had been feeding balage to cattle. No one else was present when the accident happened.

Safety investigators conducted a scene examination on Monday after emergency services were called to the Clements Rd farm about 5.15pm. Police and WorkSafe NZ were working to establish the cause of the incident.

The vast majority of young New Zealanders reaching out for support from Youthline are doing so through text messages.

The youth helpline received 80,085 contacts from young New Zealanders in the past year, with 91 per cent of those coming through text messages. Text messaging was the easiest way for young people to reach out for help Youthline chief executive Stephen Bell said. Youthline conducted a survey on the issues young people face and found the five biggest issues facing young people today are alcohol, drugs, bullying, peer pressure and self-esteem. The number of young people accessing the Youthline service hit 36,000 last year.

Twelve deer ran wild through Mosgiel on Monday after escaping from a nearby paddock of Otago Venison. Sixteen escaped from the paddock, but four were captured right away, and the other 12 “took off ”, Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said. The deer were spotted “evading capture” in Factory Rd, High St, Haggart St and Alexander Dr. Six had been spotted heading north into a forestry block, while another five were seen in a different part of town. “One was seen at a plumber’s yard in Dukes Rd, but it has since disappeared,” Sgt Dinnissen said. No property damage had been reported, he said. “There may be a few hoofmarks in people’s gardens, a couple of carrots gone missing, but nothing’s been reported.” - NZME

Artworks unveilled for Matariki Significant new artworks were unveiled as part of the Matariki celebrations at Aoraki Polytechnic on Tuesday.

The Maori Studies department, Te Whare Poutama, hosted the event which celebrated the rising of Matariki, or the Maori New Year.

Five panels located on the deck of Te Whare Poutama were unveiled and blessed as part of the celebration. All five panels were the work of students who had been influenced from a long-term relationship with Te Whare Poutama.

The first panel was included as an acknowledgement of Maori students who studied at Poutama in the 1990’s and their tutor Ben Reihana.

Next to be unveiled were three artworks created by some Diploma in Arts and Media students (Level 6).

The final unveiling was a panel created by students from the 2015 Ko Te Maramatanga module of the Diploma in Social Services. This

panel expresses the groups experience and learning at Te Whare Poutama.

As part of the celebrations, the newly formed Aoraki Polytechnic kapa haka group Te Rōpu Poutama performed its debut. This group has been trained by Kera Baker, the newly appointed Kaiawhina (interim).

Kera had been working with this very dedicated group of students over the last five weeks. They had given up their lunch hour to come to Poutama to practice the songs and actions.

The students come from a variety of courses including Art & Media, Hairdressing, International, Hospitality and Parenting. Kera and the students had achieved a great deal in a short amount of time.

Aoraki Polytechnic Maori Liaison Officer Ruth Garvin said Te Whare Poutama was proud to host events that highlight student achievement.

Kirsty’s ashes back with mum

Kirsty Bentley’s ashes have been returned to her mother in an emotional meeting, Ashburton police confirmed yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said he had mediated a meeting at the Ashburton Police station last Thursday between Jill Peachey, supported by her partner, and a Timaru Public Trust representative.

The representative had brought the ashes with him to the meeting, where they were given to Ms Peachey.

“She was very, very emotional as you can imagine,” Mr Banfield said yesterday.

“It was satisfying to see that the right person got the right result.”

Ms Peachey began her quest to have Kirsty’s ashes returned to her following police informing her last week of the death of her former husband, Sid Bentley.

Mr Bentley had requested in his will, overseen by the Tima-

ru Public Trust as he had not named an executor, to have his ashes scattered with Kirsty’s.

The ashes were buried in a memorial garden at his South Street home until his death.

Mr Banfield said ashes were not property: “You can’t decree

what is going to happen with human remains.”

Kirsty was a minor when she was killed and once Mr Bentley passed away, Ms Peachey was the only living parent.

Ms Peachey said via a Facebook message that the situa-

tion was “all sorted thanks”.

Meanwhile, an unnamed Christchurch woman told the Stuff news website that she had always had concerns regarding her ex-partner’s involvement in the crime and would change her statement if asked the same questions today.

Following Kirsty’s murder in 1998 her ex-partner had had his car sampled for DNA, and later said he left the area due to police harassing him.

Detective Inspector Greg Murton, who took over the murder investigation last year, could not be reached late yesterday.

Earlier, he told the Guardian there were still a number of lines of enquiry to complete in the investigation, which would not close simply because Mr Bentley had died.

He believed the killer was someone who knew the local area well, due to where the victim was abducted from and where her body was dumped.

Woman trapped in car A woman was rushed to hospital by a rescue helicopter yesterday after her car tipped off a rural Hawkes Bay road, crashed through a fence and rolled 20m down a bank. The sedan landed upside down after leaving Waimarama Road, southeast of Hastings, trapping the driver inside. The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter arrived in wet conditions about 3.15pm to airlift the woman to Hawke’s Bay Hospital. Emergency services used the jaws of life to free the woman from the car. The woman was said to be conscious and talking as she was loaded into the helicopter.

Pregnant drinkers Up to 80 per cent of women in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Ireland have admitted drinking alcohol during the early stages of pregnancy, according to a new report. The study, published by respected British site BMJ Open, included feedback from 2000 Auckland women and discovered that single women who smoked were most susceptible to drinking during pregnancy. University of Otago academic Dr Mark Huthwaite said the report identified a “surprising and alarmingly high rate of alcohol consumption during pregnancy”.

Access way causing headaches

A small stretch of road is causing big headaches for the Methven Community Board and the growing Methven Primary School.

Board members and school managers want the unsealed road, between Methven Chertsey Road and the school, retained as a second accessway to the school.

The board this week sought a footpath along the road, rather than take the more expensive

and difficult path of seeking formalisation or sealing of the road.

School principal Chris Murphy and board chairman Mark Taylor told this week’s board meeting the road was necessary to reduce congestion at the main accessway of McDonald Street.

Their presentation followed them learning that council staff were opposed to an earlier plea from the board for designation of the accessway as a formal road, so they were uncertain of the road’s future.

“For us it’s alarming because our school is growing rapidly,” Mr Murphy said.

The school site was set up for a roll of 220, but it was increasing and would be 301 at the start of next term, and 370 by October 2017.

There would be 1100 children accessing the school and neighbouring Mount Hutt College via the two accessways in the near future.

The board decided that its priority was the safety of pupils accessing the school. It was satisfied with the road continuing to be maintained at the site, but asked the council to investigate a footpath to be installed alongside it.

Man tries to light himself on fire A man is believed to have doused himself in petrol and attempted to light himself on fire at an electorate office in South Auckland.

The office is understood to have been that of Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, a National party list MP for Manukau East, which is on Kolmar Rd, Papatoetoe.

A spokesman at the Papatoetoe office said no staff had been injured, but he would not comment further.

Caught drink driving for third time The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court.

Driving matters David Michael Bradford, 30, of Netherby, was convicted of drink driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 679 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 679mcg/l).

Bradford was speeding when he caught the attention of police in Tinwald. As it is his third conviction for drink driving Judge Maze ordered a report be prepared before he returns to court for sentencing on August 3. * * * * Cody James Fahey, 21, of Hampstead, was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for six months for driving while disqualified. * * * * Rarangi Topp, 23, of Hampstead, admitted a drink driving charge (EBA 986mcg/l). He was convicted and will return to court for sentencing on August 17. * * * * Warren John Rose, 48, of Hampstead, was sentenced to six months supervision on a charge of dangerous driving causing injury on the back of a successful restorative justice conference. Rose had paid out-of-pocket expenses to his victim and completed a driving course. The court was told he would lose his job if he was disqualified from driving. * * * * Brendon John Green, 39, of Tinwald, breached the conditions of his zero alcohol licence in that he returned a test result of 164mcg/l.

While this is well under the legal limit, under the terms of the licence Green must not consume any alcohol before driving. Judge Maze ordered a presentence report with appendices prepared for Green’s next appearance on August 8.

Other matters Brandon Lee Farr-Wilson, 21, of Ashburton, was convicted and sentenced to six months supervision for possessing an offensive weapon.

Farr-Wilson became aggressive and turned on the other occupants of the house he was in, tipping over a table before picking up a knife.

He went outside shouting, waving the knife and stabbing objects.

All this took place in front of two children.

Judge Maze said Farr-Wilson’s behaviour had been the subject of a frank discussion in a restorative justice conference, where it was agreed it was not an isolated incident.

His efforts to deal with his anger issues had been frustrated by a lack of resources in Ashburton with the closing of counselling service Relationships Aotearoa. * * * * Refusing to comply with probation services almost landed Akuila Veamatahau a remand in custody.

The 20-year-old turned up to the Ashburton District Court this week for sentencing on charges of burglary, two of intentional damage, possessing cannabis, stealing a bicycle, and two of breaching a supervision sentence.

In addition to failing to report to his probation officer, Veamatahau ignored a court order to front up for an interview required to prepare a pre-sentence report for Monday’s appearance.

Defence counsel Roz Burnside said he was now willing to comply. She said Veamatahau had a difficult childhood and was ready to open up about it.

“He has shovelled everything under the carpet, rather than deal with it,” Ms Burnside said.

Judge Maze cancelled the existing supervision sentence, and remanded Veamatahau on bail, with a 6pm to 6am curfew until he is sentenced on August 3.

She ordered him to report to probation services before 4pm after Monday’s appearance.

“This is his last chance – if he does not comply with probation he will be arrested for breaching and I cannot see how I can readmit him to bail,” Judge Maze said. * * * * Cody Temarama, 20, of Ashburton, admitted a charge of breaching prison

Custodial sentence inevitable Two young men have admitted a combined total of 30 charges relating to theft, burglaries and arson.

Jamie Ryan Hamilton, 21, of Netherby knows he is in line for a custodial sentence when he returns to the Ashburton District Court for sentencing on August 17, having admitted to 15 charges, including seven of dishonestly taking motor vehicles, burglary, arson and theft.

His lawyer told the court Hamilton was now working as a shearer and wanted to earn as much as possible to support his partner and child before release conditions. He was remanded at large for sentencing on July 20. * * * * Verokia Akama, 20, of Allenton appeared to face three charges of wounding with intend, and three of causing grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded without plea to appear in the High Court in Timaru on July 31. * * * * Ethan Cooksley, 18, of Ashburton, was convicted and ordered to come up if called within nine months on an assault charge. He must also pay his victim $500 in reparations within 28 days. * * * * Nicole Mary Favel, 24, of Allenton, admitted three counts of petrol theft totalling $85, and one of driving while disqualified.

She was referred to undertake a restorative justice conference before she returns to court for sentencing on September 8, with a warning to repay the money beforehand. * * * * Ryan James Scarth, 23, of Wakanui, also admitted a charge of petrol theft, to the tune of $71, and breaching a community work sentence.

Scarth had only completed an hour of a 100 hour sentence handed down in March.

Grey Schumacher will also be sentenced on 15 charges of a similar nature to those on Hamilton’s list on August 17.

Small was remanded on bail on the condition he resides at a Nelson address, does not consume alcohol or travel south of the Christchurch city limits, other than to attend court.

His next appearance will be on August 3. * * * * Joseph Winiata Patu, 38, of Ashburton, was sentenced to six months supervision for assaulting a woman. * * * * Kooly Managki Te Tomo, 27, of Ashburton, admitted breaching his bail conditions.

Te Tomo is awaiting trial in the High Court in Christchurch, jointly charged with the manslaughter of AJ Gairns.

Police alleged he breached his curfew on July 4 and he was arrested and taken into custody.

Judge Maze remanded Te Tomo on bail for sentencing on August 11.

Warrants were issued for the arrest of Kiri-Awhina Albert, Logan Arthur Moulin and Robert John Smith.

Hope springs from 40-year ageing study

A

study based on data from the 40-year Dunedin Multidisciplinary Study has unveiled a new method to determine biological ageing in people still in their 20s and 30s.

After recording a large number of health measures, including blood pressure, cholesterol, gum health, white blood cell count, liver and kidney function, the researchers identified 18 “bio-markers” that could be combined to determine whether people are ageing faster or slower than their peers.

The “biological ages” calculated for each of the individuals when they reached a chronological age of 38 ranged from under 30 to nearly 60 years.

Individuals who were ageing more rapidly were less physically able, showed cognitive decline and brain ageing, reported worse health, and looked older.

The researchers believe being able to detect accelerated ageing at an early stage paves the way for applying therapies that slow ageing and lessen agerelated ailments.

A major new study, stemming from a 40-year New Zealand research project that has tracked the lives of more than 1000 people since the early 1970s, has suggested we now may be able to.

The findings, just published, also raise an even more fascinating prospect – whether we can design therapies to slow ageing and head off age-related disease before they occur.

Researchers from the United Kingdom, United States, Israel and New Zealand drew on a range of health measures, such as blood pressure, white blood cell count, liver and kidney function, that had been taken regularly from 954 participants in Otago University’s Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study.

They were able to pinpoint 18 bio-markers which, when combined, could indicate

whether they would biologically age faster or slower than their peers. When the participants reached the age of 38, the researchers were able to set biological ages for each of them, which ranged from under 30 to nearly 60 years.

This was then compared to their previous measures at age 26 and 32, allowing the researchers to draw slopes for each of the 18 variables and determine the hidden pace of biological ageing in all of the individuals.

While most were found to be ageing on the inside at a rate roughly in step with their years, some were found to be ageing at three times that – and others weren’t ageing at all.

“As we expected, those who were biologically older at age 38 also appeared to have been ageing at a faster pace,” said the study’s director, Professor Richie Poulton of Otago University.

“A biological age of 40, for example, meant that person was ageing at a rate of 1.2 years per

year over the 12 years the study examined.”

People who were ageing more rapidly were less physically able, showed cognitive decline and brain ageing, reported worse health, and, based on the estimates of students who judged their ages by looking at photographs of them, looked older.

Being able to detect accelerated ageing at an early stage paved the way for applying therapies that slowed ageing and reduced age-related ailments, Dr Poulton said.

In New Zealand, the number of people aged 85 years and over was projected to rise from 67,000 in 2009 to 144,000 in 2031, then more than double to about 330,000 by 2061.

The global population of people aged over 80 would be near 400 million by 2050, bringing the risk of an “enormous global burden” of disease and disability if we couldn’t find a way to extend healthy lifespans, Professor Poulton said.

The paper’s lead author, Dr Dan Belsky of Duke University in the US, noted the new

findings had only gone as far as establishing a proof of concept that an “ageing trajectory” could be mapped out.

The method would need to be refined to make it faster and cheaper, he said, but the ultimate goal was to intervene in the ageing process itself, instead of separately tackling different killers such as cancer and heart disease.

The study was published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Thieves target older cars The Honda Torneo is the country’s most popular car – with thieves, that is.

The Torneo tops AA Insurance’s list of most frequently stolen cars, followed by the Mazda Familia and the Subaru Impreza.

The list is based on the insurer’s claims data, which also shows 92 per cent of theft claims for models in the top 10 were for cars manufactured more than 10 years ago.

The average value of a stolen vehicle claim from the top 10 is $5120.

To calculate theft incidence rates, AA Insurance measures the number of claims made for each model of car for which 20 or more claims have been made, as a percentage of the total number of policies it holds for that model.

The information is based on the insurer’s highest theft claims incidence rates over the last four years for cars covered under comprehensive insurance.

Swimming pig A fishing page on Facebook has recounted the story of two men who went out fishing as part of the Bounty Hunter Fishing Tournament over the weekend and encountered a wild boar swimming a few kilometres off the coast of Coromandel. Whitianga resident Gene Denton, who runs the Whitiangler Facebook page, described how a mate, Glen Dobbs, and another friend were “cruising along on their way to a fishing spot when they noticed a black shape bobbing up and down right in front of them and it was the pig swimming way out in the ocean”. After hitting the 63kg pig, the fishermen pulled it aboard and stuck it, he said.

Lost diary Honda Torneo, the country’s most stolen car.

AA Insurance customer relations manager Amelia Macandrew said older cars were being targeted because newer models tended to have more security.

“And while older cars can also be a potential target, there are things all owners can do to ramp up their car’s security to make them less attractive to thieves, regardless of the age or make,” she said. “For example,

installing an alarm, a steering lock, or a visible immobiliser.”

According to police crime statistics for last year, there were 49,121 motor vehicle thefts and related offences recorded, compared to 48,375 in 2013 and 49,935 in 2012. Many of the cars were taken from driveways or outside homes.

“The best chance of keeping your vehicle safe is to park it in

a garage or carport. However if you’re going to park on the street then make sure it’s under a street light for better visibility,” said Ms Macandrew.

“It’s in our customers’ interest to make their cars as difficult to steal as they can – not only to avoid the distress and inconvenience of a theft, but also help keep insurance as affordable as possible.” - NZME

Good intentions won’t bag a plastic alternative Stu Oldham

f education is the best way to change habits, then the anti-plastic bag lobby has some way to go in Mid Canterbury and almost everywhere else in New Zealand.

Take a look around the next time you buy your groceries.

Check out the check-outs: how many of your fellow shoppers have brought their own reusable bags?

Open your ears next time you visit a retail store. How many people are asked if they want a bag for their pre-packaged purchase? How many turn the offer down?

More often than not, the answer to all these questions is “not many”. And that – and the ongoing debate – says our plastic bag habit will be a hard one to break.

The Palmerston North City Council this week asked all councils to band together and push the government to introduce a levy on single-use ban plastic bags.

Lobbyists say there is a growing groundswell against plastic bags and that people will be happy to use their own reusable bags instead of buying single-use ones.

However, it is difficult to see all this translating into direct action now, before a levy is imposed. Reusable bags are available, and people still choose plastic bags.

Ashburton District mayor Angus McKay this week said councils would have a hard time policing anti-bag bylaws if they were not consistent between the regions.

He is a fan of paper bags but, where bylaws might struggle and cost-increases might penalise consumers and businesses, he reckons education is the best way to change habits.

Customers were reluctant to learn when New World started charging for plastic bags in 2009. They went elsewhere and the charge was dropped after a just couple of months.

Relying on customer behaviour is not going to change plastic bag use. If it could, it would have by now.

shburton District Council ended its financial year on June 30. It should have gathered in at least $55.8 million in income throughout the year.

A recent financial report for the 10 months to April 30, 2015 highlighted that the council had already received $53.9m or 97 per cent of the income expected. In all likelihood the council’s actual income for the full financial year will exceed what was conservatively planned at the beginning of the year. The council’s 2014/15 Annual Report which has to be adopted by October 31, 2015 will confirm the actual amount of revenue.

There are 15,327 rateable properties in the district.

Rateable property owners are significant funders of council services. Not all property owners live in the district. For instance, 250 property owners have Auckland postal addresses.

We are a little unusual in Ashburton having six instalments each year to pay rates.

Most other councils only have four instalments. Ratepayers can now get their rates invoices sent directly to their email address. Visit eservices.adc.govt. nz if you want to subscribe.

A 10 per cent penalty is added to any unpaid rates instalment balances. Most ratepayers pay on time or before time.

The 10 month report revealed that at the last rates instalment only $69,000 of rates remained outstanding from before June 30, 2014. While that amount of long term rate debt might be low, between July 1, 2014 and April 30, 2015 another $468,000 of rate payments was outstanding. Penalties of $43,000 had accumulated for these late payments.

The council closely watches the level of rates debt. If necessary it employs a debt collection agency to recover money owed to it. Seizure of property is the final option pursued to recover debt.

temporarily offset to some degree by ratepayers who prepay rates. At April 30, $309,000 had been paid in advance.

Other common sources of council revenue include fees and charges, development and financial contributions, subsidies and grants, finance income (ie interest on money the council has in the bank), and other gains.

How people go about paying the council is a moving feast. Payments are made in person, by post, online and via the Council’s website. Cash, cheque, credit card, eftpos, direct credit, direct debit, automatic payment, and one-off bill payments are all methods of transacting payment.

Using cheques as a form of payment peaked in New Zealand in 1995. If you are somebody who rarely uses a cheque book you are the norm now. Predictions have been made that cheques will be all but gone as a form of payment by as early as 2018.

In the 2013 calendar year the council received a total of

20,214 cheques. Cheques made up 18 per cent of the council’s inward financial transactions that year. Move a year forward, and despite more people living in our growing district and making use of council services, the total number of cheques made out to council dropped to 16,981. Cheques comprised only 14 per cent of the inwards financial transactions in 2014.

While many businesses don’t accept cheques now, the council will continue to process them as long as there is a preference by some of our customers to use them.

When cash or cheques are received a reasonable amount of manual processing is required. Overhead costs are incurred. If you at the council’s front desk waiting in a queue behind someone filling out a cheque, writing their details on the back, providing ID and filling in their stub, you might think twice. On busy days the Council’s Customer Services team can deal with around 650 transactions.

The most popular form of payment for Ashburton residents is direct debiting. That’s where a person authorises the council to have funds withdrawn from their bank account.

Thirty-nine per cent of the council’s inwards financial transactions are now direct debits.

Direct debiting is viewed as the most efficient form of payment. It gives the greatest level of control over the amount of payment, frequency of payment and correct data for reconciliation. From a customer experience point of view the payer signs one form and sits back.

Into the unknown for Greeks

By Catherine Field Greece has given Europe a mighty political shock but also placed its own future on the line after voters emphatically rejected terms for bailing out its crippled economy.

The outcome is a powerful domestic boost for Alexis Tsipras, the 40-year-old Prime Minister, whose Government had accused Greece’s creditors of “terrorism” and “fiscal waterboarding”.

But it leaves the country teetering on economic collapse, bereft of strong friends in Europe and facing a possible exit from Europe’s single currency.

In a surprise development, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis announced his resignation, a move which could change the tone in negotiations with creditors.

The key will be who Tsipras chooses as a replacement, it has to be someone seen as creditable and who negotiates seriously and delivers on promises.

Varoufakis said he was told that some creditors would prefer he not attend the ministers’ meetings.

He said Tsipras had judged it “potentially helpful to him” if he absented himself. “I shall wear the creditors’ loathing with pride.”

Earlier German Economy Minister and Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel had said: “Tsipras and his Government are leading the Greek people down a path of bitter abandonment and hopelessness”.

“Tsipras had “torn down the last bridges on which Greece and Europe could have moved towards a compromise”.

In the referendum the “No” camp won by 61 per cent to 38 per cent.

Sunshine Coast detectives say they have made a huge dent in the region’s ice supply after busting a significant drug-trafficking ring. Police said 74 people were charged with drug-trafficking offences during the eight-month operation to bust the network, based largely in the state’s southeast. Police seized more than 2.5 kilograms of ice, and arrested 92 people on more than 200 property, drug and firearm charges during the sting.

The result was hailed by leaders of parties that oppose austerity or loss of national sovereignty at the expense of European integration.

“Today in Greece democracy won,” tweeted the head of Spain’s leftist Podemos party, Pablo Iglesia, who is a Tsipras ally.

The head of France’s farright National Front, Marine Le Pen, described the outcome as a “No for freedom, for revolt against European diktats which want to impose the single currency at any price”.

A Franco-German summit will be held in Paris today and a summit of Eurozone countries in Brussels tomorrow.

The plebiscite had been announced just over a week earlier, after Tsipras walked out of talks over terms for another 1.6 billion ($2.65 billion) in bailout funds by July 1.

He predicted a “No” vote would cause lenders to ease demands for economic and welfare reform and instead reschedule Greece’s crippling 320 billion debt.

But the creditors - the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and other members of the Eurogroup, whose countries share the euro - are in no mood for lenience.

Many negotiators have no trust in Tsipras, whom they blame for months of delay and grandstanding.

Scepticism runs very deep

in Germany, which has lent Greece tens of billions of euros in the name of European solidarity, and in Ireland and Spain which took their austerity medicine.

Many eyes are on the European Central Bank, which holds the lifeline to the Greek banking system.

Without its support, Greece’s economy may swiftly collapse.

A “No” vote means Greece “would have to introduce some other currency, because the euro is not available as a means of payment,” said the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.

A new Australian study of more than 3200 gluten-free supermarket products has found little or no difference in their nutritional value when compared to standard items.

“Just about every junk food in the book these days has a gluten-free version,” she told AAP. “It is interesting to look at some of the food marketing magazine which promote (gluten-free versions) as a great way to increase your business.”

The research, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, compared the nutritional content in foods such as breads and pasta that were staples in a balanced diet, as well as junk foods such as potato chips, biscuits and lollies.

“In the core foods we found significantly lower levels of protein in gluten-free foods, but the remaining content such as sugar and sodium was actually very similar,” Dr Wu said.

The researchers also found almost no difference in the nutritional make-up of the junk foods.

“The consumption of GF products is unlikely to confer health benefits, unless there is clear evidence of coeliac disease, gluten intolerance or allergy to gluten-containing grains,” they concluded.

Air NZ objects to expansion

BY FIONA ROTHERHAM Air New Zealand is the sole voice protesting against an application by Qantas Airways and American Airlines for a coordinated increase in flights on the trans-Pacific route, planned for the start of the peak travel season in December.

Qantas and American Airlines sought reauthorisation from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission last month for a 10-year expanded joint business agreement, allowing them to coordinate operations on the trans-Pacific route and boost capacity between Australia and the US by 9 per cent.

The Australian airline has upped the competitive ante on New Zealand’s national carrier by forging a closer alliance with American Airlines, adding thousands of extra seats to its transTasman services in early spring, and plans to extend its budget offshoot Jetstar’s services in New Zealand to four regional destinations later this year.

The ACCC previously authorised a similar five-year arrangement between Qantas and

American Airlines in September 2011.

The interim authorisation for an extended JBA is being sought now because of American Airlines’ plan to fly between Los Angeles and Sydney from December.

That’s the peak time for tourists on the trans-Pacific route and when the airline has relevant aircraft becoming available it doesn’t want to sit idle.

An extended alliance would let Qantas resume services on the Sydney-San Francisco route and the partners have also indicated they want to break Air New Zealand’s lucrative monopoly on flights between Auckland and the mainland US by flying Auckland-to-Los Angeles as early as next year.

Air New Zealand currently attracts Australian passengers onto its trans-Pacific flights via a stop in Auckland.

In a submission to the competition regulator, Air New Zealand said it was inappropriate to grant interim authorisation without a full and considered analysis by the ACCC. Qantas and American Airlines already

had authorisation to coordinate on designated routes under the original JBA which is valid to June 2016, it said.

“If either party wants to start a Sydney-San Francisco service they can do so alone or with the support of the other through codeshare, block space, wet lease, or other arrangements,” Air New Zealand said.

While any delay to full cooperation between the parties could result in a “less than optimal launch of these services from the parties’ perspective”,

this delay has only been caused by the parties themselves not allowing sufficient time for the authorisation process, Air New Zealand submitted.

Given changes to the operating environment since the 2011 authorisation and the successful reorganisation of American Airlines since then, the ACCC should carefully consider whether American Airlines would enter any of the joint venture routes in the absence of the alliance, it said.

In response, Qantas and American Airlines said the interim authorisation would allow them to operate under the existing JBA with the new trans-Pacific routes added in, until final antitrust immunity is received.

Comments on the proposed additional capacity have been “overwhelmingly positive”, it said with only Air New Zealand raising any objection. “Air New Zealand’s stated concerns must be viewed in the context of the strategic advantage it would enjoy from delaying or diluting the success of the introduction of the applicants’ new joint services,” they said.

Coast goldminers back Up to 60 mining jobs have been promised with the start up of two new goldmining operations near Hokitika and Kumara. Christchurch man Mike McDonald - a director of collapsed Hokitika-based mining company MCAM - appears to be back in business on the West Coast. He met recently with Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn and advised $20 million was being invested to start goldmining at Greenstone, near Kumara, and Awatuna under pre-existing permits. New equipment and heavy machinery, including a massive 200-tonne digger, was being shipped to New Zealand to get the operations under way shortly, Mr Kokshoorn said. Deliberate obstruction to drug test proves unacceptable

A

mine worker at Macraes Flat mine near Dunedin was dismissed for failing to provide a urine sample during random testing of all workers present on site.

The worker raised a personal grievance for unjustified dismissal and unjustified disadvantage against his employer; Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited (Oceana) which was not upheld in the Employment Relations Authority.

James Ivamy was dismissed in October 2013.

Drug screening programmes were the norm due to the hazardous nature of the work.

The previous process had seen testing carried out at the beginning of a shift however on this particular day staff were advised they were required to undergo a drug test approximately nine hours into the 12-hour shift.

The Authority was told staff had become used to a regime under which testing occurred at the beginning of a shift.

a risk and some had taken to consuming drugs in the workplace later in their shifts.

Even if there was no truth to this Oceana was under an obligation to address the issue.

It did.

At the time, Mr Ivamy was working at the bottom of the mine.

He says he did not expect the call to leave the mine was for the purpose of undergoing a drug test and says he urinated prior to departing.

As a result he says he was unable to produce the required sample by the time his shift was scheduled to end.

He was also unable to stay on site due to a requirement he look after his son during the day.

Oceana contacted Mr Ivamy

at home and after Mr Ivamy had consulted with his union, Mr Ivamy agreed to the drug testing agency visiting his home.

However when the required sample was provided, it was found to be diluted.

Mr Ivamy failed to turn up to another testing appointment later in the day, however subsequently left that evening for a hunting trip.

Oceana concluded, after following its disciplinary process, that Mr Ivamy had had ample opportunity to comply with the drug and alcohol policy.

Oceana found that Mr Ivamy’s conduct deliberately obstructed or interfered with testing which was unacceptable and therefore constituted serious misconduct warranting dismissal.

The Authority agreed and Mr Ivamy’s personal grievance failed.

Tasty winter warmers

W

hen it’s cold outside there’s nothing better than a bowl of hearty soup. While there are many pre-prepared soups on the market today that are light years away from the old style dried, packet soup and flavourless canned varieties of the past, nothing can beat soup, made from scratch at home.

When it comes to ingredients, just about anything goes in any combination, providing your ingredients are fresh and your stock is tasty. Traditional soup might be lentil and meat based, but today’s soups are often about vegetables first, with meat – if it’s used – playing second fiddle.

Curried parsnip soup 1 large onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp curry powder 6 medium parsnips, peeled and thinly sliced 5½ cups chicken stock Salt and pepper to taste 4 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped, plus 1 tbsp to garnish ¼ cup milk 100g blue cheese ■ Cook the onion and the garlic in a little olive oil until soft.

■ Allow a good 3 to 4 minutes for this stage.

■ Add the curry powder and the peeled and sliced parsnips.

■ Sweat for 5 minutes, making sure the parsnips do not stick to the pan.

■ Add the chicken stock and bring to the boil. Simmer for 30 to 45 minutes and add salt and pepper to taste.

■ Purée in a food processor or with a hand-held blender ■ Add freshly chopped parsley and milk just prior to serving.

■ Crumble the blue cheese into serving bowls.

■ Pour over the hot soup, top with 1 tbsp chopped parsley.

Pumpkin and kumara soup

■

3 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and diced 4 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced Salt and pepper to taste 600g pumpkin, peeled and diced 400g orange kumara, peeled and diced 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 4 cups Oxo vegetable stock 8 rashers streaky bacon, chopped 2 Tbsp parsley, chopped 4 crusty sesame seed bread rolls Salt and freshly ground black pepper ■ Heat 2 Tbsp oil in a large saucepan on medium low heat ■ Add onion, garlic and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes or until softened.

■ Add pumpkin, kumara and spices.

■ Stir and cook for 5 minutes turning to coat the vegetables in spices.

■ Add stock to cover the vegetables and bring to a simmer.

■ Cook until pumpkin and kumara are breaking apart and easy to mash or blend.

■ Purée mixture until smooth.

■ Thin to desired consistency with water or milk. Season to taste.

■ Heat remaining oil in a frying pan and fry bacon until golden and crispy.

Scrape up any brown bits from the bottom of the saucepan. Stir in the creamed corn and bring to a simmer Turn the heat down to low and cook for 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Ladle into bowls and stir a little sour cream into each.

Finally, add a dash of lime juice and coriander for extra taste.

Carrot and orange soup 1 onion, finely chopped 6 medium sized carrots, peeled and sliced 4 c chicken stock Salt Pepper Cream 1/2 c orange juice 3 tbsp light olive oil Zest of one orange

■ Serve with bread rolls.

Sweetcorn chowder

1 x 300g can creamed corn Pinch of black pepper Pinch of cayenne pepper 3 tbsp sour cream 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped

■ Heat the oil over moderate heat and add the onion and orange zest.

■ Fry gently, without browning, until the onion is soft.

■ Add the carrots and stock, bring to the boil and boil gently for about 15 minutes until the carrots are tender.

■ Remove from the heat and puree until smooth in a blender or food processor.

■ Place back on the heat, in a clean saucepan and bring to the boil.

■ Remove from the heat and add the orange juice, ■ Taste, season and serve with a little cream drizzled onto the soup and a sprinkling of chives.

Midweek Munchies 2 tbsp olive oil 3 large potatoes, peeled and cut into 1cm dice 1 onion, finely diced 1 tsp dried vegetable stock 3 cups hot water

■ Heat the oil in a saucepan over a medium heat.

■ Add the diced potatoes and onion and partially cover with a lid.

■ Cook, occasionally stirring, for 5 minutes or until the potatoes

At the age of 91, Colin Redmond finds it difficult to write his name.

“I get the shakes,” he explained at the Ashburton Society of Arts’ 51st annual exhibition opening on Monday night.

However, painting is a different story altogether. Put a brush in his hand and he is away.

Mr Redmond’s oil work entitled Waxeye in the Garden won the $300 Ashburton Forest and Bird New Zealand Flora and Fauna Art Award at the prestigious opening event attended by 200 people.

Mr Redmond, who established Ashbur-

ton’s Redmonds Furnishing and Flooring over 50 years ago, said he had been painting for about 35 years as a hobby, and paints every day.

He was happy to see Waxeye in the Garden was one of the 36 works which sold on the night, and it had sold particularly quickly, showing a red sticker by the time he got to the gallery for the evening.

The painting was based on scenes in his Christchurch garden, where waxeyes visit often.

“They come around in the winter at our place and I feed them,” Mr Redmond said.

Art runs in the family for the Redmonds, and Colin’s granddaughter Hazel won the

$300 ACL Award in the applied art section for her photography. And Redmonds Furnishing and Flooring have sponsored a local merit award for the event for the past 15 years.

Ashburton Forest and Bird president Edith Smith said the branch began sponsoring the flora and fauna award in 2011.

“Each winner has shown a special affinity for the wildlife they have portrayed and their artwork provides a voice for nature in the very positive setting the exhibition provides,” Mrs Smith said.

There are altogether 456 works, all for sale, at the exhibition, which runs until July 24.

In brief Mixed bag at tourney The Mainland U-19 netball team, featuring Mid Canterbury’s Kate Lloyd and Sophie Worsfold, has had a mixed run in the national U-19 tournament in Auckland. The team started on Monday with a heavy 37-21 loss to Wellington before bouncing back with a 33-28 victory over Southland. However the team suffered another loss yesterday, going down 28-23 to Hamilton City. They finished the second day of pool play with a 29all draw with Papakura. The team will head into pool crossover play today.

the court for their first practice on Sunday.

The team is gearing up for a busy month of tournaments in August with competitions in Ashburton, Timaru, and Duned-

in lined up in quick succession.

Coach Natalie Bateman said having the tournaments so close together will allow the girls to keep up their form and play consistently, whereas in

previous years the tournaments had been interrupted by the school holidays.

The first of the tournaments begins on August 2 in Ashburton.

Nationals beckon for hockey boys Hockey hopefuls (right) practise their passing at the Mid Canterbury under 15 hockey trials on Sunday.

The Mid Canterbury under 15 boys are bound for Wellington for this year’s National Championship tournament at the end of September.

The under 15 girls – who also had a trial on Sunday and a second one this weekend - have their championship tournament in Christchurch.

There are more trials to come at the NBS Ashburton hockey turf, with the primary boys on July 12 and the primary girls on July 15.

Scott to bounce back Last year Matt Scott couldn’t watch as NSW captain Paul Gallen finally raised the State of Origin trophy at Suncorp Stadium. NSW skipper Paul Gallen has urged his side to embrace the hate they will encounter from Queensland fans at Suncorp Stadium for State of Origin III tonight. Gallen remains one of Origin’s all-time reviled figures as far as Marooon fans are concerned and with the Origin series on the line Gallen is expecting an emotionally charged atmosphere. Youngsters impress on track There might have been just one winner, but every two-year-old on the track in heat four at yesterday’s Mid Canterbury trainers and owners trials showed the style of a champion.

Over a mile, five youngsters earned their race-day ticket, with each turning on a stylish performance that belonged to

far more seasoned campaigners.

The Michael House-trained Dance N Jewel led from the mobile with Millwood Charlie in the trail.

The field remained unchanged until the 400 metre mark when Micky Flynn peeled off the back and attacked the leaders.

Millwood Charlie wasn’t to be left behind, issuing a challenge and the pair ran neck and neck for the line.

Micky Flynn held on by a nose, but the pair both clocked the same time, 2.00.3.

They were followed home by Earthquake, Tiffany Bromac and then Dance N Jewel.

Less than one second separated the first and last runners in the heat.

The Bettors Delight-Andress Blue Chip bay gelding Micky Flynn, which is trained and driven by Nigel McGrath ran the last 800 metres in 58.2 seconds and covered the final 400m in 27.7.

A last-start hiccup hasn’t altered Glenn Old’s plans to give Peacefuleasyfeelin his chance in Australia.

The full-time position will suit a multi-talented, self-starting and web-savvy journalist eager to get to the heart of Mid Canterbury sport.

The successful applicant will require: • A current OSH forklift licence • Experience operating forklifts/reachtrucks etc • Great communication skills • A high level of literacy and numeracy skills • Proven self-leadership and accountability • To pass a pre-employment drug test

They’ll report on all the big games, and on all the big news, in one of the most exciting and successful homes of top-flight and provincial sport.

RE-REGISTER YOUR DOGS It’s that time of year again when dogs need to be registered and to help make this easier and quicker for dog owners, we are encouraging re-registrations using our pay it online service.

All dogs over three months of age are required to be registered with us, including all farm dogs.

Alternatively, you can register your dogs by filling in and returning the registration form mailed to you at the beginning of July or by coming into the Council offices.

Please note that if there are changes to your dog’s registration this year e.g. a change of address, you can only pay it in person at the Council offices.

LONG TERM PLAN 2015-25

PUBLIC NOTICE

We appreciate the hundreds of people, businesses and organisations who took the time to send us feedback on the proposals in our district’s Long Term Plan (LTP) 2015-25.

Road Closure Proposal

We adopted the Plan last week, after making several changes based on your comments about wanting us to focus on debt reduction and consolidation, rather than spending on big ticket items.

The main focus of the Long Term Plan (LTP) is to keep building on quality infrastructure and amenities to encourage and allow for future growth in our district.

Over the next 10 years, we will boost our roading budget by an extra $650,000 per year (before inflation) to keep on top of ongoing maintenance.

Work has also started on two major projects – a $1.9 million sewer replacement in Ashburton and sewer repair trials in Tinwald.

Based on your feedback, we had to make some tough decisions to ensure the LTP reflected our community’s needs.

We have deferred making a decision on the installation of two hydroslides at the EA Networks Centre and decided against providing a $1.5 million grant to go towards a combined clubrooms and indoor sports facility in Rakaia.

Explosive Samoans may test ABs

BY GREGOR PAUL There’s been a parade, literally hundreds of tonnes of flesh pressed, school visits and endless talk about what it all means but, as kickoff looms, the question of whether Manu Samoa are any good can’t be put off any longer.

The bond between the two nations has been formed through their mutual love of rugby and tightened through their mutual respect.

But for all the feel-good and excitement sweeping the country, Samoa have to front at Apia Park and leave with their heads held high.

That was the point expertly made by the Samoan Prime Minister in a welcome speech that had an irascible charm and poignancy. While it does his oratory skills no justice, the gist was that having fought so hard to finally host the All Blacks,

Manu Samoa need to deliver a suitably apt performance to honour the occasion.

That doesn’t mean they have to win or come within a whisker of winning. What it means is they have to deliver an 80-minute performance where their basic skills hold up.

They have to maintain their pass-and-catch accuracy for the duration, ensure their set-piece doesn’t falter in the final quarter and retain their discipline and control at the breakdown.

If they can do all that and tackle their hearts out, then the final score won’t matter too much.

How big is that if, though?

Every side comes into a test against the All Blacks knowing what they have to do, what they would like to do.

But just twice since 2012 has execution matched aspiration, and only South Africa and England have managed to gain ascendancy for long enough to

inflict defeat on the world’s topranked side.

What chance Samoa being able to be the third? In five previous encounters against the All Blacks, they haven’t come close, haven’t played anywhere near as well as they could.

Some of that has been down to the age-old problem of player release - a situation that hasn’t arisen for this test.

Census Johnston was nearly a casualty - the giant prop announcing his retirement from test rugby a few weeks ago only to be talked out of it when an injury crisis left Manu Samoa short of front-rowers.

Johnston’s presence not only sends a message to the French that Pacific Island players are ready to stand up to their devious contracting, it gives Samoa a huge presence and experienced scrummager in the front-row.

The Samoan pack, in fact, looks well enough equipped to

handle themselves and provide possession for a backline that has enough explosive power and direction to find and exploit space.

Kahn Fotuali’i is as good as most halfbacks in the world game and Tim Nanai-Williams brings an intriguing set of skills to the test arena.

“They have got some guys that, if you give them space and ball they want and it becomes unstructured, then they will make you pay,” says All Black captain Richie McCaw. “A guy like Kahn Fotuali’i will take any opportunity that opens up and they are big lads if you allow them to get go-forward. I think that is the key - to not give them easy opportunities.”

The bigger issue is whether Samoa can handle the pressure of the occasion.

This is the biggest test in their history and the last few days have been emotionally demanding.

So much rests on their shoulders, so much responsibility lies with them to make the nation proud that they could easily freeze or be gripped by anxiety.

But the All Blacks don’t think they will.

The bulk of Samoa’s team play for professional clubs. Most of them have played in big games before, know what pressure is all about and know how to get the best out of themselves.

“There is no doubt about that,” says All Black assistant coach Ian Foster on whether Samoa are a good side. “They have a history of causing a few upsets.

“This is going to be a fullyfledged international for us. For them, the fact they have all had a bit of a break and are coming into a test is going to be significant for their whole country, changes the dynamics.

“And that is what we need. It is a great challenge for us to start a campaign.”
