The drowning of a toddler on a rural Ashburton property has prompted a warning from Water Safety New Zealand. Emergency services responded to reports of a person having fallen in to a body of water at a property on Maronan
Valetta Road about 5.20pm on Sunday. Senior sergeant Matt Emery confirmed the victim was a one-year-old girl. The girl was unresponsive and taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter where she had since died. “Police extend their sympathies to the girl’s family at this difficult time,” said
Emery. An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing.” It is the second death of a toddler in a water-related incident in the district in the past two years.
