The drowning of a toddler on a rural Ashburton property has prompted a warning from Water Safety New Zealand.

Emergency services responded to reports of a person having fallen in to a body of water at a property on Maronan

Valetta Road about 5.20pm on Sunday.

Senior sergeant Matt Emery confirmed the victim was a one-year-old girl.

The girl was unresponsive and taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter where she had since died.

“Police extend their sympathies to the girl’s family at this difficult time,” said

Emery. An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing.”

It is the second death of a toddler in a water-related incident in the district in the past two years.

Seatbelt non-use a dangerous trend

A study in to a dangerous trend of non-seatbelt wearing victims of car crashes has revealed some unsettling trends in behaviours on New Zealand roads.

The study, which was brought about by the AA, reviewed 200 fatalities from 2011 to 2015, and was started to provide more information around why non-seatbelt fatalities accounted for 19 to 30 per cent of motor vehicle occupant deaths between 2006 and 2016.

“We found out from NZTA that 96 to 97 per cent of people wear their seatbelts, so we wanted to find out who wasn’t,” AA national manager of policy and research for roading Simon Douglas said.

“We wanted to find specific groups and research them from there.

“We found five groups in the end, some with smaller proportions but over-represented.”

One of the major groups to show up through the study was the rural crashes, which accounted for 54 per cent of the fatalities.

“We know it is the least safe part of our network,” he said.

“It is a very challenging one and it is also a very dispersed one, and a big part of our network is classed as rural.

“That is not to say it’s not concerning.”

The rural area crashes also showed that 24 of the 108 people that had died had more than 10 previous traffic offences, pointing to possible habitual behaviour.

“They were often offences like drink driving which we know to be habitual and likely to reoffend,” he said.

“They are often also some of the most hard to reach people for various reasons to get safety messages across.”

Another dangerous group was what the AA defined as “young and risky”, being people aged between 16 and 25.

“Young men were significantly over-represented and we know that it tends to be young men who speed more,” Douglas said.

Now that the ‘who’ data has been collected, Douglas says NZTA have picked up the baton of putting the stats in to use with a series of adverts to highlight risks involved with not wearing a seatbelt.

“Even if we can get half to change, that will be a significant improvement,” he said.

A devastating farm and environmental pest has been sighted in Mid Canterbury.

A Methven man said he was driving along Mt Hutt Station Road about 10pm on New Year’s Day when he saw a wallaby hopping along surrounding farmland.

It was at the upper end of the road, nearing the intersection with Scenic Route 72.

He reported the sighting to friends as it was the first time he had ever seen the introduced mar-

able pasture and damage fencing.”

The Department of Conservation has previously released estimates that wallabies cause approximately $28 million of economic damage every year.

At the current rate of spread this figure was likely to increase to $84 million within 10 years.

Drownings accounted for 105 deaths in New Zealand in 2017, and are the third highest cause of accidental death after motor vehicle accidents and falls.

Doing her bit for the community

One Rakaia firefighter is proving that neither size nor sex is a barrier to doing your bit for your community.

Alannah Brinded might only stretch the tape measure to 5 foot 1 inch, but she is part of the growing number of women firefighters in the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Working around her job as a hairdresser (no need to worry about her having to dash off in the middle of a haircut), Brinded completed her seven day assessment in June after initially joining more than a year ago.

“I had always wanted to be part of the services,” she said.

“I always wanted to be a cop but my partner joined the Southbridge brigade so I decided to give it a go myself.

“I knew I was not getting any younger, and I was a bit nervous but it has all been great.”

Despite being in a minority, Brinded said everyone has treated her as an equal.

“I have never struck any sexism and I would like to believe that there isn’t any,” she said.

“In-house and on the course I wasn’t treated any differently to anybody else, and I was expected to push as hard as the guys.”

Despite only being new to the force, Brinded already has her sights set on moving up through the ranks.

“Once I’ve got a few years more experience I would certainly like to become a bit more qualified and get some more experiences, maybe become qualified to drive the trucks but I’m not sure I would see over the steering wheel,” she said.

“At the end of the day as long as I know I have helped someone, I have been able to do something physically active, I will be happy.”

The role does not come without challenges, and Brinded is well aware that dealing with a fatality will be something that happens one day.

“I have been fortunate so far that I haven’t had to respond to a

fatal but I know the day will come, but the support network amongst the group is great and there are things in place to help us deal with it,” she said.

“Being such a small area the constant concern is that it will be somebody you know.”

Road safety is something she has become more conscious of,

saying she is looking forward to when the safety improvements are added to State Highway 1, as well as how frustrating it is to see people using their mobile phones when driving.

“The best thing about being in the Fire Service, St John or the Police is that you feel not only like you are part of team, but a family,” she said.

“It gives a real boost to the confidence within you and if you have any doubts and are saying ‘I’m not good enough’ it boosts your confidence a lot.”

The firefighters train weekly, meeting at the station every Mon-

day, while in the lead-up to her seven-day course Brinded was helped out with extra training.

“There is another guy who helped me out with extra training twice a week which was really nice,” she said. “He took time out of his personal family life to help me get up to speed which was just fantastic.”

When it comes to suggesting for other people to give it a go, Brinded is incredibly supportive.

“I love it, and it gives me a huge buzz, luckily I haven’t seen anything too nasty but I am learning all the time and it has been a real eye-opening experience,” she said.

In brief Fisherman missing A search is under way for a fisherman who has been missing from Bethells Beach, West Auckland, since Sunday night.

Police received a report at 5.02pm on Sunday night that someone hadn’t heard from their father who left to go fishing on Sunday around midday. He hasn’t made contact with anyone so police are searching for him. Area inquiries have been conducted around local beaches and Surf Lifesaving are currently conducting a search at the beach.

Rare chicks attract attention from passers-by

Cute and camouflaged, recently-hatched gulls at the Ashburton River below State Highway One are attracting attention from passers-by.

Many cycling and walking over the bridge have been stopping to view the youngsters and their parents, taking in information on new signs.

Forest and Bird Ashburton president Edith Smith has been keeping an eye this summer on the critically-endangered black billed gulls, which return each year to nest in the high-profile spot.

They seem to be particularly close to the eastern side of the bridge this year, meaning speckled brown and grey downy chicks amongst the colony can be seen with the naked eye.

Smith said the colony is thought to be remnants of the 8000 or so which had been washed out upstream after trying to nest earlier in the season.

Remnants of this original colony had attempted to nest around the highway since, but the changing river had led to there currently being only about 1500 adults remaining at the site.

the site into February.

Smith said it was great to see such high interest in the critically-endangered river gulls, and there had been more people than ever stopping to view them.

“It’s nice to think they are here for the public to look at and we

have this amazing viewpoint on the bridge,” Smith said.

It is a noisy area, with the deafening sound of traffic on one side, and the raucous sound of the gulls on the other.

Passer-by Colin Wills said he travelled over the bridge most days and often stopped to view

the birds. “You can’t help but see them,” he said.

He said it was good to see them doing well after they were washed out further upstream.

“It’s nature, it’s always going to come back,” he said.

Despite the high level of interest, information signs about the birds have been the target of vandals.

Smith was disappointed a sign erected at the bridge viewing area had been forced off and thrown into the river bed below.

Some of the other signs warning river users to keep away from the area had also been vandalised. Human interference has been a problem for the colony in the past, with vehicles approaching the area.

The Ashburton River is a significant nesting site for the black billed gull, which has its main habitat on Southland braided rivers. This season they have also been highly visible in the Waitaki and Rangitata rivers.

Predation is another major threat, and despite the chicks being camouflaged, they do not always escape the attention of hungry black backed gulls.

In a recent incident witnessed by a Forest and Bird member, a chick was gobbled up by a black backed gull which had swooped into the colony and stole it from the beak of another black backed gull.

Police are appealing for information on a motorcyclist seen travelling at 199km/h near Waihola, south of Dunedin. The motorcyclist was spotted by police on Saturday, driving an Aprilia SV1000 motorcycle at 199km/h on State Highway 1, near the township of Waihola. “The speed this rider reached is beyond dangerous, the risk they posed to themselves and other road users is unimaginable,” Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said. “Had they crashed they would have killed themselves and possibly other road users. This behaviour is unacceptable and puts others at risk.”

Teen a hero A Tauranga teenager with just two months of surf lifesaving training has been commended after saving the life of an elderly man caught in a rip. Ian Pugh, 13, is a member of the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service and while he is a three weeks shy of being old enough to become qualified, that did not stop him when he found a bodyboarder in strife. The man, described as an elderly man bodyboarding, grabbed onto Ian’s board and the youngster towed him to shore.

The man, although shaken, was assessed by lifeguards and given the all-clear. Patrol captain Julia Conway helped Pugh fill out his first-ever rescue incident form “He kept a calm head and did exactly what lifeguards many years his senior are supposed to do,” Conway said.

Bags for free?

The Government’s plastic bag ban could hit the poorest the hardest, according to advice from the Ministry for the Environment. To mitigate this problem, the ministry recommended people with Gold and Community services cards receive reusable bags for free.

But the Government said it would not require retailers to offer the bags for free and would not be providing a subsidy.

Family loses home A family with five children are looking for a new home after their house was destroyed in a large fire over the weekend. The family’s dogs, two pet chihuahuas, also had a narrow escape. The Smith family, of Paremoremo, were downstairs on Saturday night when they heard funny noises coming from upstairs.

“My mum and my husband went upstairs to see if someone was there. From downstairs, I just heard my mum screaming in the most terrifying voice: ‘Fire! Everybody get out’!” A Givealittle page has been set up to help the family, who did not have insurance.

Ocean wows Caroline Bay crowds

There are not many singers who can pull off an impressive rendition of The Bodyguard classic, I Will Always Love You. But Ocean Waitokia from Ashburton managed it, with her cover so impressive it won the Caroline Bay Talent Quest intermediate section for 17 years and under.

The 16-year-old said she sang the song in its most popularly known style as delivered by the iconic Whitney Houston.

It got her through auditions and the semi-finals on Friday, before mesmerising crowds at the quest on Saturday.

“It feels good to be back in the game,” said the Ashburton College Year 12 pupil of the win.

The experience was her singing career highlight since going to America in 2017 for the World Championships of Performing Arts.

However when she thought about it, there was just as much to be proud of last year, when she was overall

runner-up in the country music Star Awards in Tauranga.

Ocean has been singing since she was just three, when her grandmother Linda took her to a fundraising event for the Ashburton Trust Event Centre held on the East Street chessboard.

Ronald McDonald was there, where he held a Fifteen Seconds of Fame event.

Ocean sang Tutira Mai, and won a bicycle.

Her talent has since seen her hit the high notes with many a country music festival award over the years, and even be hosted by a talent show in Germany.

Ocean does not plan to make music her career, instead looking at either becoming an orthodontist or marine biologist, but will continue to perform whenever she can.

“I will always have music with me.

I like meeting new people, and all the new experiences it brings.”

Christmas elderly wishes 2018

Cleaning windows becomes a social experience Clean windows always make a house look light and airy, but it is often something that the elderly find hard to do for themselves.

So Katelyn Hogg was a welcome sight to all when she arrived with her window cleaning kit in hand and got stuck in.

The social aspect of helping the elderly is one that shouldn’t be overlooked either.

Yes they have their windows cleaned, but the spin-off is also getting to meet someone new, have a great chat and learn something about people they may not have normally come in contact with – everybody wins.

Escape Room horror Horrific details have emerged about the deaths of five teens who were killed while locked inside a recreational “escape room” in Poland when a fire broke out.

Firefighters in the city of Koszalin found the bodies of the young victims after they extinguished a fire in a room adjacent to the one the girls had entered while celebrating a birthday.

Yesterday, four of the five victims were named on local news websites and social media as Karolina Barabas, Gosia Tymieniecka, Wiktoria Julia Pietras and Amelia Wieczorek.

The teens were believed to have been good friends in the same class at school.

Autopsies showed the girls died of carbon monoxide asphyxiation, prosecutors said, a technical term for smoke inhalation.

A faulty heating system appears to have caused a fire at the house where the children died in northern Poland, according to investigators.

A 26-year-old man employed at the facility which was installed in a rented dwelling was admitted to hospital with burns.

Players in escape room games are locked inside a room or building and must solve puzzles and find clues that lead them to the key that will unlock the door.

Regarded as an intellectual challenge, the games are highly popular among teenagers in Poland.

Koszalin prosecutor Ryszard Gasiorowski said a leak in a bottled gas heating system was a probable cause of the fire.

Earlier, firefighters blamed faulty electric wiring and substandard security procedures.

The country’s interior minister has ordered fire safety inspections at more than 1000 escape room locations across the country.

The first inspections were being held on Saturday, the Interior Ministry said.

Previously, there was no official requirement for fire safety certificates at such locations.

Teachers, psychologists and local education authorities met on Saturday to discuss ways of helping students at the school the five girls attended deal with the trauma.

Students, teachers, city authorities and residents attended a memorial Catholic Mass at noon at the local church.

Local residents placed flowers and lights in front of the location, a two-storey house with a huge Escape Room sign in front.

Yesterday, Koszalin Mayor Piotr Jedlinski declared a day of mourning and appealed to residents to hold no entertainment gatherings or parties.

The annual Epiphany procession was cancelled.

“The families want peace and quiet as they face their tragedy,” Jedlinski said.

Five family members die in crash A suspected drunken driver heading the wrong way on Interstate 75 in Kentucky struck a vehicle carrying five family members from Michigan early yesterday, killing all six people, authorities said.

The southbound pickup truck being driven in the northbound lanes struck the family’s sport utility vehicle at 2.30 a.m. in Lexington. The SUV caught fire and all five occupants of that vehicle died, along with the pickup’s driver, Lexington police said in a statement.

The family from Northville, Michigan, was returning from a vacation in Florida, the Fayette County coroner’s office said.

told WLEX-TV the pickup truck was coming toward him prior to the fiery crash.

“I thought I was seeing something, honestly,” DeGraaf said.

“He was in the centre lane. I was in the centre lane. I had to merge out of the way at the last second to get to the right lane. I mean, he was flying. Absolutely flying.”

A coroner’s statement identified the family members as Issam Abbas, 42 and Rima Abbas, 38, along with their children, a boy Ali Abbas, 14; and girls Isabella Abbas, 13, and Giselle Abbas, 7.

The driver of the white pickup was identified as 41-yearold Joey Lee Bailey of George-

town. The coroner’s statement says authorities believe Bailey was driving under the influence and that toxicology tests were planned. The interstate was shut for hours as the accident investigation opened.

According to the Islamic Center of America of Dearborn, Michigan, funeral services for the family are set for Tuesday at the centre.

Local media reported in Michigan that the death of the family has devastated relatives and friends.

Habib Abbas of Dearborn, who identified himself as a cousin of the father, told The Detroit News that when he first heard about the crash that he just didn’t believe it

and went on about his day.

“I thought it was a rumour or something and then saw it again and called his sister.

“She and the family are even more in denial,” Abbas told the newspaper.

He added that Issam Abbas was a lawyer and that Rima Abbas was a doctor and devoted mother to their children. He said the extended family was close and that his cousin led a “beautiful life.”

“You don’t expect a whole family to get wiped out,” he said. “You think to yourself ‘What’s the worst case scenario?’ and that’s it.”

It was the second crash in three days involving multiple deaths on Interstate 75.

Sir Billy not dying Funnyman Sir Bill Connolly has apologised to anyone who may have been upset at the news of what was thought to be his imminent death.

The 76-year-old has quashed any morbid rumours in a video capturing him happily playing a banjo while basking in the sun. The video was posted by his New Zealand-born wife Pamela Stephenson captioned with one word: “Today.’’

Cost of living outstripping wages M

oney, it’s a simple word, just five letters, two syllables, but it’s a simple word that packs a powerful punch.

If you’ve got plenty of it you probably don’t think a whole lot about its impact on your life, but if you’re among the vast majority of Kiwis, then money – or the lack or it – is probably is never far from your mind.

The idealist would say money isn’t everything in life, health and happiness are much more important and they’re right, but the realist would say that without money, health care becomes an issue and your happiness is always dampened by the constant worry about making ends meet.

of Trade Unions spells out very clearly just where most of us sit when it comes to money and whether what we earn is keeping up with the cost of living. For most of us it is not.

The official line might be that as a country, our economy is looking pretty good, but behind the front fences in most New Zealand homes, most families are looking at what they earn and essential

spending and seeing a gap.

The CTU survey shows we’re working longer hours, we’re working harder and job security and job satisfaction are plummeting. A whopping 89 per cent believe they could earn more doing the same job in Australia.

If you look at the numbers we should be better off – wages are rising faster than the consumer price index. So how does that work? It’s simple, a lot of the stuff measured in the CPI isn’t relevant to many Kiwis and they’re probably the things that are rising very little. The important stuff – food, housing and transportation keep going up and wage increases are not keeping pace.

Life is clearly getting tougher for

a lot of people. Yes, there are plenty who spend unwisely, who’re not satisfied unless they have the best and the latest and whatever they desire. That’s self-inflicted poverty.

It’s the families who’re cutting costs and still doing it tough who are sinking in a debt pool that’s not of their own making.

The minimum wage is being incrementally increased and will rise to $17.70 per hour in April and to $20 by 2020. That’s great news for people who’re at the bottom of the wage barrel.

However, that increase, more than 10 per cent between this year and next is far more than many employees have received over several years.

The gap between lower paid workers and those on minimum wages is narrowing. It’s no longer news that New Zealand’s new strugglers are the working poor.

It’s tough doing business in New Zealand, particularly for smaller companies but sometimes just a few extra dollars a week might not significantly impact on the bottom line, but it might make a world of difference to a family.

A big component of job satisfaction centres around being appreciated for the work you do and while a thank you goes a long way, to most employees a pay rise is still the best reward they could have.

Without it against inflation, they’re losing ground.

Another blow for residential landlords

oon landlords won’t be able to offset their residential rental losses against other income, as the Government introduces ring-fencing legislation.

The legislation is a move to reduce the Government’s perceived unfairness between property investors and owner-occupiers.

The Government expects the rules to improve a first-home buyer’s ability to compete with investors, improve housing affordability, and increase tax revenue by about $190 million per year.

But it means residential property investors will not be able to offset rental losses against other income. And renters may find their rents increase because fewer rental properties will be available.

Other possible consequences include: ■ If housing affordability improves then existing property owners may suffer from lower property values.

■ If rents do go up this will increase the cost for those who provide rent subsidies - the Government itself.

In the coversheet to the Regu-

latory Impact Assessment issued

by Treasury and the IRD which accompanied the legislation, the IRD Quality Assurance reviewer stated: “... it is not possible to be confident that the stated objective is being met in the best way and with the least unintended consequences.”

In my opinion, if there is no certainty the legislation will be successful with its stated purpose, it is irresponsible to introduce and pass this legislation without having a clear expectation that it will be successful.

Ring-fencing rules won’t be phased in. The rules will apply from the 2019-2020 income year, so for most taxpayers, this will be from April 1 2019.

The new rules are unfair to investors who have already bought residential rental property based on the current tax rules. The fairest way would be to apply the ring-fencing rules to new purchases of residential property, as past purchases will have little or no impact on current first-home buyers or housing affordability.

Existing residential property investors are now trapped. If they decide to sell their property because their rental losses are no longer available to them,

they could suffer the tax consequences of the bright-line test which taxes gains on residential property sold within two years of purchase (or five years if the residential land was bought on or after March 29, 2018).

The residential land subject to the ring-fencing rules is essentially the same residential land caught under the bright-line test with some limited exceptions: ■ Land subject to the main home exclusion ■ Holiday homes subject to the mixed-use asset rules where expenditure is already apportioned ■ Land elected to be taxable on sale ■ Land owned in widely held companies ■ Certain employee accommodation Overseas residential land is also included in the ring-fencing rules, despite having no effect on New Zealand first-home buyers or New Zealand’s housing affordability.

If more than one rental property is owned then the properties will be treated as a portfolio unless the taxpayer elects for each one to be treated separately.

Rental losses will be claimable to the extent that subsequent

rental profits are made or if taxable income is made on sale of the residential land. Otherwise the rental losses will continue to be carried forward, and potentially could never be claimed.

With the ring-fencing rules, tax compliance costs will also rise as it will be harder for investors to prepare their own tax returns.

The new rules will be another reason for residential property owners to consider alternative uses such as Airbnb.

Residential rental property owners need to act soon. Now is the time to consider incurring any tax-deductible expenditure such as repairs, to ensure they do obtain a tax deduction against other income before the new rules apply. It will be interesting to see what the effect of the rules will be. With so many changes now affecting residential property, isolating any one effect may be difficult.

It’s all quiet on the M. bovis front

The new farming year has got away to a promising start with no further flare-ups of mycoplasma bovis in the latest update by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI).

In the first update of the year last Friday MPI reported little change to property numbers with the cattle disease.

Over the Christmas period there was only one revoked notice of direction in the South Island, otherwise there were no other changes.

Just before Christmas two dairy farms in the Ashburton District were among four farms added to the list of infected properties.

MPI mycoplasma bovis director Geoff Gwyn said in a statement that MPI had been working with property owners at risk of being infected with M. bovis since the decision to attempt eradication of the disease and the “vast majority’’ of those tested were found not to have the disease.

“For those that do have the disease on their property, you are taking a big hit for the industry and I assure you, it does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.’’

He said feedback received from farmers about how to deal with them and their properties had been invaluable and MPI was encouraging more suggestions.

More workshops and meetings will be held throughout this year to update farmers of the response’s progress.

“As I said a couple of weeks ago, the latest evidence we have is that things are looking positive for eradication.

“However, I know that a number of people are still doing the hard yards and this news may be of little

consolation to them.’’

Farmers and their families would be at the centre of MPI efforts as it continued to work towards eradicating M. bovis, he said.

Changes have been made to

farm cleaning and disinfecting specifications as a result of more knowledge about the transmission of M. bovis.

MPI will retain a conservative approach, but the changes are

expected to simplify the cleaning process on farms.

Gwyn said last year had been a big year for property owners affected by the M. bovis outbreak and response momentum was

expected to continue throughout this year.

So far 262,245 samples have been received from the Animal Health Lab and 255,687 tests completed.

Global dairy prices lift again Global dairy commodity prices lifted 2.8 per cent overall for the third consecutive increase at the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction.

Buttermilk prices had the heftiest gain at 9.3 per cent to reach $US3252 a tonne during the latest event on January 2.

Skim milk powder increased 7.9 per cent to $US2201 and the main commodity of whole milk powder rose 1.2 per cent at $US2705.

The increase is a turnaround from a drawn-out slump previously lasting since May. Commodity prices increased across the board partly because of a decline in ex-

pected volumes, said NZX analyst Robert Gibson. He said commodity prices had been expected to lift.

Leading up to the auction, whole milk powder volumes were down 22 per cent on the previous event, while skim milk powder volumes were down 28 per cent.

Milkfat prices also lifted for both anhydrous milk fat (AMF) and butter – reaching an average of $US5137, up 3.9 per cent and $US4076, also up 3.9 per cent. This was despite 2000 tonnes of each commodity removed from the catalogue.

At the auction 167 bidders bought 28,651 tonnes, compared with 36,181 tonnes of product sold at the last event.

Farmers urged to focus on critical risks Summer is a busy time on the farm, but it’s also among the most hazardous periods for accidents.

Almost 550 farmers suffered injuries serious enough for them to take at least a week off work over the last summer (December 2017 to February 2018) while there were three fatalities on farms.

The major causes of injuries were trips, slips and falls, being hit or bitten by animals, hit by moving objects and incidents involving vehicles, according to data from ACC. “The summer is a hugely productive time for farmers and a time when family and visitors are often on the farm too,” Al McCone, WorkSafe’s Agricultural Lead, said.

“However, the statistics show that it is also a busy time for accidents, including the most serious. Our research has shown that there is almost always a vehicle involved when someone dies as a result of a farm accident at this time of year.

“We are encouraging farmers to focus on reducing the critical risk of working in and around farm vehicles. That includes taking a few minutes to think about the best vehicle for the job you or your workers are doing and the terrain you are going to be driving over.

“It’s thinking about the locations of ditches, slopes or furrows. That might mean going back to the shed to switch vehicles, or going on foot.

“Operator protective devices, like rollover protection and the use of seatbelts in vehicles are key areas [where] farmers can reduce the likelihood of an accident. Many

tractor fatalities can be prevented by the driver wearing the seatbelt.

“You should also always check around farm vehicles before reversing – that is especially important in summer with more children out and about on farms.”

Sun exposure is also a major summer health and safety hazard for those working in the sector and while the initial impact of sunburn might be some discomfort, the long-term effects can be deadly.

New Zealand has the highest overall melanoma skin cancer rate in the world and past research has shown that one in four New Zealand farmers have suffered skin cancer.

Farmer, rugby legend and Safer Farms ambassador Richard Loe said he has changed his behaviours around sun safety and is urging other farmers to follow suit.

“Sun safety really isn’t onerous,” he said.

“It’s as simple as slipping on a shirt with long sleeves and wearing a hat with a wide brim or a cap with flaps – more people get sunburned on the face and neck than any other part of the body.

“Slop on plenty of sunscreen at least 20-minutes before going out, use at least SPF 30 and take the bottle with you and reapply every couple of hours – especially if you’ve been doing sweaty work.

“If you’ve got jobs you can do in shade or under cover, plan them for the middle of the day, when the sun’s UV levels are higher – and the exposed jobs for early or later.

And don’t forget to protect your eyes from UV radiation – with wrap-round sunglasses with a good sun protection rating.”

Christmas retail sales flat – Paymark

By Jenny Ruth December retail sales using electronic cards were relatively flat, rising 1.2 per cent by value compared with the 5 per cent growth shown in the preceding 11 months.

The 120.7 million transactions, up 2 per cent, were worth more than $6 billion, but that value was held down by no growth at all in Auckland and Northland, according to Paymark, which accounts for more than 75 per cent of the country’s electronic transactions.

The value of the Auckland and Northland transactions accounted for $2.4 billion, more than a third of the nationwide total.

Sales were at their most brisk in Whanganui, up 6.6 per cent from a year earlier, in Palmerston North, up 5.8 per cent, and in Southland, up 5.7 per cent.

Retail sales in South Canterbury were worse than sluggish, easing 0.1 per cent compared with December last year. Sales in the rest of the region were up just 0.7 per cent.

Sales in the capital were up only 0.6 per cent on December 2017.

“Paymark transactions reached

new highs before Christmas and over the month in general but figures also point to several pressures on merchants,” Darren Hopper, head of e-commerce at Paymark, said.

“The annual growth rate was generally low and below the rate of the recent months that would have shaped retailer expectations,” Hopper said.

“Anecdotally, there were also many sales, starting back on Black Friday – November 23 – and this may have pushed the average transaction value lower as well, although this is difficult to see in Paymark figures as only the total transaction value is recorded,” Hopper said.

“There may have been more, or fewer, items than usual within each transaction as well.”

Among other types of merchants, sales through toy retailers were up 11.3 per cent on the previous December and hardware and home decorating stores recorded a 6.1 per cent increase.

Sales through chemists, up 5.5 per cent, and those of supermarkets and liquor stores, up 3.9 per cent, were relatively strong but still below the increases recorded in earlier months.

That went for sales through restaurants, bars and cafes too, although their sales were up 6.3 per cent on the previous December.

‘It’s harder to make ends meet’ More than two-thirds of Kiwis say their incomes are not keeping up with the cost of living, despite more than half shouldering more work, a new survey has found.

“I feel undervalued and underpaid,” said one worker in the survey, which was conducted by the Council of Trade Unions (CTU) last week.

“It’s harder to make ends meet and each week is a struggle and paying power bills is getting harder each month,” said another in the survey, which canvassed 1195 respondents.

Another person worried for the “future of their kids and grandkids”.

More than 70 per cent of workers in the survey said their incomes were not keeping up with the cost of living, the CTU said.

That’s despite more than 55 per cent saying they were doing more

work.

“We’ve known for a long time that work in New Zealand and our employment law aren’t up to scratch but on every single metric we surveyed on we’ve found that many more people think it’s getting worse than better,” CTU President Richard Wagstaff said.

“Our work is one of the biggest parts of our lives, it’s an indictment on us as a nation that for too many people, it has become so unfulfilling. It’s hard to see how people or the economy can do well when working people’s mood is so low,” Wagstaff said.

Another worker who took part in the survey said they worried for families with children to feed.

“It’s getting so hard and I see children coming to school hungry and the pressure on parents is so hard,” the worker said.

Someone else said that 90 per cent of their weekly pay went on rent and food.

“The gap [between income and costs] is widening at an alarming rate. We can’t afford to live well in our own city. My children have to move from Auckland,” another respondent in the survey said.

The latest available household living-costs price index found that the bottom 20 per cent of households by spending saw living costs rise 2.2 per cent in the year to September.

The index, released by Statistics New Zealand in October, found living costs went up 1.9 per cent for households with the most to spend, which had benefited from a decrease in tertiary education costs resulting from the Government’s fee-free first-year policy.

The median price Auckland’s largest real estate agency sold houses for in 2018 was down 0.8 per cent on 2017 at $836,792 – the first such decline in 10 years, says Barfoot, which accounts for about a third of all residential property sales in the city.

That was despite an 8.1 per cent increase in the number of transactions Barfoot booked through the year.

The only listed retailer to have reported Christmas sales to date, outdoor clothing company Kathmandu Holdings, said last week its sales fell short of expectations, falling 1 per cent in the 22 weeks ended December 30.

The decline was much worse in New Zealand, down 2.4 per cent in stores open a year or more, compared with Australia’s 0.2 per cent fall.

Paymark says the growing use of scheme credit and debit cards is another pressure adding to the bank fees retailers have to pay.

“The majority of Paymark transactions are still with traditional bank-issued debit cards, accounting for 70.7 million transactions in December out of the total of 120.7 million transactions, but that was 2.1 per cent fewer than in December 2017.

Across all cards, the average transaction was $49.77, down 0.8 per cent on the previous December.

“The average transaction value has been falling for several years as cards are increasingly used for lower-valued transactions but the recent decline also reflects downward price pressure within some sectors,” Paymark says.

But the known factor of falling fuel prices had a negligible effect on the change in average transaction value across all sectors.

Barfoot sold 504 properties, 25.2 per cent fewer than the 674 sold in December 2017.

ASB Bank economist Kim Mundy says the Barfoot figures highlight a very soft end to 2018.

“Looking back in time, the 504 sales that took place in December was the lowest number for a December since 2008 when 461 houses sold in Auckland,” Mundy says.

Survival struggle to sausage sizzles

elaxing picnics and scrummy barbecues exude that special Kiwi summer feeling – no span of warm, sunny days is complete without a barbecue, or a picnic at least.

Over the past couple of centuries outdoor eating has become a novel activity for many people, reserved for recreation or special occasions, alone or with company.

As we all know, however, outdoor eating was the norm for the majority of our history. Our focus here is on picnics and barbecues, as well as what makes them special to us.

Centuries behind The word picnic was derived from the French term ‘piquenique’, meaning a gathering where each person contributes food or drink. By the start of the 19th century, the British adopted ‘picnic’ to refer to outdoor meals.

For early European settlers across the country, including what was then called Ashburton County, outdoor eating was a necessity rather than an activity enjoyed by the outdoorsy well-todo. Meals were normally cooked over an open fire, harking back to the common cooking methods of the previous centuries and beyond.

As described in A Hewson’s Early Days in the Ashburton County, the earliest living conditions would have necessitated outdoor cooking and eating, considering that there were few or no buildings present.

Hewson describes the early lodgings at Mount Peel Station, which was first taken up in 1855 or 1856. He claims that the first house on the site was “built of cabbage trees stuck upright in the ground, the cracks plastered up with clay, the roof being thatched with snowgrass”.

Abundant illustrations and photographs of groups preparing food outdoors around this time confirm the necessity of the practice rather than it being done for novelty’s sake, or as a leisure activity. This makes perfect sense as, of course, you would not want to risk burning down your dwelling over a piece of charred mutton or two!

fire faded away. In line with the rest of the urbanised world, New Zealanders could now enjoy recreational outdoor eating events more often. Picnics and barbecues quickly became Kiwi staples, and their popularity is attested to by the abundance of group picnic photos and postcards in our collection.

Overgrown paddocks and the seaside were popular early picnic destinations, and still continue to be. Streams, waterfalls and forest tracks were and still are prime picnic country also.

Up to the 20th century and into the present, the pastime of picnics have shown their longevity, as they still prove to be a popular excuse to get friends and family together out in the sun.

You can’t think of a Kiwi summer without a barbecue – it’s just quintessential Kiwiana.

Images often flood the mind when considering summer activities, many of which include small sausage sizzles outside shops or at schools during lunch, backyard barbecues with eager dads crowding around the grill like ducks to breadcrumbs, or even large community gatherings with too few sausages and too much budget white bread – and of course plentiful tomato sauce.

Nancy Kerrigan, one of the most famous victims in sport.

25th anniversary of shocking incident There has never been an incident in sport like it.

Twenty five years ago, to the day, ice skater American Nancy Kerrigan was turned into one of sport’s most famous victims and her compatriot Tonya Harding among the most infamous villains.

After a practice session at the American figure skating championships in Detroit, an assailant smashed Kerrigan’s right knee with a police baton.

The attacker turned out to be an associate of Jeff Gillooly, the ex-husband of Kerrigan’s skating rival Harding.

The story quickly exploded around the world.

Video showed Kerrigan screaming “Why, why, why?”, a question which has been answered although Harding’s precise role is unclear.

The plot was organised to knock Kerrigan out of the nationals and selection for the winter Olympics in Norway that year.

It failed, with Kerrigan winning silver in Lillehammer while a befuddled Harding, whose issues included a broken lace, finished eighth.

Kerrigan was to glide off into relative obscurity as Harding, who lives in rural Oregon, became a sporadic tabloid godsend.

Having admitted a charge of hindering the prosecution, Harding was banned from skating which helped force her into some interesting career and life paths.

She has done it all: drink-driving arrests, boxing, wrestling coach, Dancing with the Stars, lead singer in her band Golden Blades and even landscape gardening.

The overall impression is of a troubled character who has found peace in recent years, and she is estranged from her domineering mother.

Harding was also the subject of a superb movie I, Tonya, which came out two years ago and portrayed the plotters as bumbling low-lives operating

under the misapprehension that they were master criminals.

If Harding was blameless, she hasn’t helped her cause by keeping empathy for Kerrigan to a minimum, while blaming her trailer park upbringing for the bad publicity.

“It’s an image that the media has given me as a bad girl ... because of the few things that have gone wrong in my life,” Harding said.

“I have apologised so many times ... she is not worth my time anymore.”

Gillooly, who was jailed, has been apologetic, and also regrets how the attack overshadowed what a brilliant skater Harding was, something the movie helps address.

I,Tonya gave Harding both star and sympathetic treatment, forcing Kerrigan to remind people: “I was the victim”.

Kerrigan struck image problems of her own, appearing ungracious at finishing second in the Olympics, and later dissing a Disney parade. And scandal arrived when her brother was found guilty of assault and battery.

Kerrigan still believes Harding was involved, but has also said she doesn’t hold anything personal against her.

“I don’t dwell on it,” she said on an NBC documentary.

Memories of that extraordinary incident are being stoked this month, with the US figure skating championships returning to Detroit for the first time since 1994.

“They say history repeats itself,” a US Figure Skating promotion proclaimed, before adding brazenly: “It’s been 25 years since Detroit was the epicentre of the figure skating world.”

Which actually understates the case. For a brief time, figure skating was world news.

Lauriston’s dreams of Canterbury club cricket supremacy were crushed by a superior St Albans in Christchurch on Sunday.

The Canterbury Club Championship was contested between the top club sides from the regional competitions around the Canterbury cricket district, and Lauriston took on St Albans for a place in the competition’s final on Saturday but fell well short, losing by eight wickets.

St Albans won the toss and elected to bat first on the pitch at Christchurch’s Hagley Park, a decision that immediately paid dividends.

nings without a run having been scored, and his fellow opener Nick Gilbert followed for a duck on the last ball of the first over, to leave the visiting side struggling at 1/2.

Matt Holstein was the main destroyer with the ball in hand for St Albans, finishing with 4/10 off 7.2 overs, as Lauriston were rolled for just 67 in 34.2 overs.

Bevan Richan and Tom Ravenscroft were the top run scorers for Lauriston, both out for 14, while Dan O’Brien added 13.

The trio were the only Lauriston batsmen to make it into double figures.

In reply, St Albans got off to a strong start and never really let up, easily reaching the target in just 9.3 overs.

They finished up 69/2 with Dan Sharples not out at the end on 36, while Liam O’Connor picked up Lauriston’s two wickets.

O’Connor finished with figures of 2/17 off 2.3 overs.

The win secured St Albans a place in the Canterbury Club Championship final, where they will meet Cheviot.

Sunday’s other game was between Cheviot from North Canterbury and Temuka from South Canterbury, with Cheviot winning by seven wickets at Timaru’s Aorangi Oval after chasing down Temuka’s total of 137 all out in 24.2 overs.

It was the second year in a row Mid Canterbury teams had played in the Canterbury Club Championships, with Allenton

playing last year and being beaten by Burnside.

Lauriston were Mid Canterbury’s top team in the 2017/18 season, picking up three of the four Mid Canterbury Cricket trophies on offer – the Pritchard Shield, Muirhead Rosebowl and Studholme Shield.

This season’s efforts hadn’t quite matched up to those of last season though, with the Tech Stags having taken out the Pritchard Shield, while Lauriston and Tech shared the season-opening Twenty20 title after the competition final finished in a rare draw.

After playing in the Canterbury Club Championships last season, Allenton were unable to field a team this season.

Shane Warne has renewed calls for Australian Cricketers Association president Greg Dyer to stand down as the raging debate over national team selection intensifies.

After Dyer indicated players felt there were communication issues between them and selectors, his comments were met with opposition from both Warne and Mark Waugh, a recent selector.

Waugh maintained there were no such problems between players and the panel, while Warne went one step further in his rebuke.

“Runs & wickets is what it’s all about, to (sic) many excuses being thrown around,” the champion former legspinner tweeted.

“The player knows – I think it’s time for some tough love not rested & cuddled.

“As for you Greg Dyer, I think it’s time for you to move on.”

The situation comes after Nathan Coulter-Nile claimed he was unhappy with the communication given to him when he was not picked in Australia’s one-day squad through back soreness.

Selection has become a hot issue in Australia this summer, with the absences of Steve Smith and David Warner highlighting a struggling batting line up.

Dyer claimed on Sunday there was disquiet amongst players, with hopefuls questioning if runs and wickets in domestic cricket was still the chief currency to put them in line for international selection.

But Waugh said the communication lines were fine and always open, and that players needed to just perform.

Wizards silence Thunder Bradley Beal scored 25 points to help the Washington Wizards beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-98 yesterday.

Otto Porter had 20 points, six rebounds and five assists, Jeff Green scored 16 points and Tomas Satoransky added 15 for the Wizards.

Russell Westbrook had 22 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists for his 12th triple-double of the season and the 116th of his career.

Paul George scored 20 points and Jerami Grant added 17 for the Thunder, who had won their previous three games.

The Wizards led 54-50 at halftime, but the Thunder quickly took a 55-54 lead in the third quarter on a layup by Grant.

Club breakaway threat Premiership Rugby could break away from the Rugby Football Union and form a new independent league, according to a report.

The Mail on Sunday claims it has received minutes from a recent meeting between the clubs’ chairmen threatening to form an unregulated league separate from the RFU, should the national governing body ultimately turn down the league’s proposal to scrap relegation.

A breakaway would threaten the eight-year, £200 million professional game agreement signed between the RFU and Premiership Rugby Limited back in 2016.

One of the minutes from the board meeting, quoted in The Mail on Sunday, states: “If the RFU were to be unwilling to support change, we shall need to ensure access to match officials and player insurance cover (as this is a joint policy), as this would potentially become an unregulated competition.”

Ringfencing the Premiership requires the approval of the PRL’s 13 board members – the current Premiership clubs plus London Irish – as well as that of the RFU. “As anyone would expect the Premiership Rugby Board will discuss a number of issues at each meeting, with only some of those ever coming off the drawing board and into reality,” said a Premiership Rugby spokesperson.

“Our board meetings are a forum for ideas to be discussed but until there is an agreed policy on any issue, these are just ideas.

Schauffele dazzles Xander Schauffele has shot a dazzling 11-under-par 62 closing round to snatch victory in the US PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. Schauffele bogeyed the first hole yesterday yet by the time he reached the 18th green he faced an 11-foot putt for a third eagle of the day and the course record.

He missed it but his birdie was enough to give the 25-year-old American a one-shot victory from overnight leader Gary Woodland (68) and a share of the record on Kapalua’s Plantation course.

Pliskova withdraws World No.7 Karolina Pliskova has withdrawn from the rain-marred Sydney International less than a day after winning the Brisbane tournament. Sydney to host final English club rugby could be in for a very big shake-up. professional and is of course a topic raised at many of our board meetings.

Acting RFU chief executive Nigel Melville dismissed that possibility back in December, say-

ing: “I think that’s called wishful thinking isn’t it? Suddenly people want something to happen now.

“Well no, that’s not how it works.

“Should Premier Rugby want to change their structure, they can bring that to the Professional Game Board for a vote and then it would be put to the RFU council.

“Nothing is going to change as regards this season.”

Scrapping relegation to the Championship – and promotion from it – has been a common topic of discussion among the Premiership clubs in recent years.

However, the intensity of those

talks has increased this season with several established sides still in danger of dropping into English rugby’s second tier.

Newcastle Falcons are currently bottom of the table after 12 matches and four points clear of safety, one year on from making the Premiership’s semi-finals for the first time.

The 13 clubs that make up PRL are set to imminently receive a substantial investment in excess of £200m following the addition of CVC as a minority shareholder.

Premiership Rugby Limited has launched a formal investigation into the leaking of the minutes.

Sydney has won finals hosting rights for the inaugural 24-team ATP Cup men’s tennis tournament in January next year. Sydney will also host part of the group stages, along with Brisbane and a third Australian city to be announced at a later date, with Perth and Adelaide the front-runners. The $21 million event from January 3-12 will comprise three eight-team groups and be the richest in tennis history outside of the four annual grand slam tournaments. “With more than 100 players from 24 nations the ATP Cup will help us launch the global tennis season every January in Australia,” said Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley at a launch event in Sydney attended by ATP tour chairman Chris Kermode.

Isner keeping his cool on and off court If anybody needs an example of how to cope with the demands of professional sport, they should take a look at ASB Classic top seed John Isner.

The American is one of the world’s best tennis players.

He’s ranked world No. 10 and has been inside the top 20 for nine straight years.

He has accumulated 14 ATP titles and boasts wins over Roger Federer, Juan Martin Del Potro, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic (twice) when the Serb was No. 1.

But Isner comes across as an everyday guy, who you could imagine watching NFL with his college buddies, or shooting the breeze over some pizza.

He also remains – despite more than a decade on tour, refreshingly honest and thoughtful in interviews, unlike some of the clichéd answers of his peers.

In short, he is one cool customer, rarely fazed on or off the court.

It was the same on Sunday, as he caught up with the Breakers, then relaxed courtside watching their 97-84 win over the Perth Wildcats.

“Everyone works so hard on their game and on their body,” said Isner. “Most of the time, it comes down to who is more relaxed mentally; on the court while playing and off the court.

“There is so much that goes in to being a good tennis player. It’s not just what you can do well on the court, it’s between the ears as well.”

Isner is in a good place. He had an impressive 2018, highlighted by his fantastic feats in Miami, where he became the oldest masters champion in history, beating three top-10 players on the way.

He also reached the last four at Wimbledon, losing 26-24 to Kevin Anderson in the fifth set of a six-and-a-half hour marathon, reached the quarter-finals of the US Open and claimed a title at Atlanta.

Isner, who turns 34 in April, is supposed to be in the twilight of his career but has no plans to retire.

“As long as I’m still enjoying it and still having fun competing, I want to be out here as long as I possibly can,” said Isner.

“I don’t want to waste any opportunities, I don’t want to look back on it when I’m 45 and think I could have done a lot more.

“I think I can play another three or four years ... and some more after that.”

At 2.08m, the imposing Isner doesn’t have a typical tennis build. That brings obvious advantages – he served more than

1200 aces last year – but also challenges, especially with the stress on his body.

“Taking care of my body and my health is my full-time job,” said Isner.

“Everything I ever do is tailored around my body, to keep myself healthy [and] fit. This off-season, I have felt as good as I’ve ever felt.”

Isner has a strong record at the ASB Classic, with two titles (2010 and 2014) and four other quarter-final appearances, and wants another Auckland run.

“I had a very good year [in 2018] but not a great start,” said Isner.

“That is a focus for this year, to start better. But we know how difficult the beginning of the year is and how good everyone is. Especially at this tournament, every year, it’s so strong, and it’s the same this year.”

Xpression out, Wait A Sec in Smart Hastings filly Xpression will be missing from Saturday’s Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) at Trentham, but trainers Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen have their Group One winner Wait A Sec on the verge of a return to racing.

Xpression has been on the easy list since finishing third behind More Wonder at Awapuni last month.

“She was disappointing last start,” Lowry said. “She seemed to be working up well before the race and she should have gone a lot better than she did. There had to be something wrong.

“We had her thoroughly checked over after the race and her bloods weren’t 100 per cent.

“It’s not viral, but she’s just got a few niggling issues and we’ve backed off her.

“She’ll go out for a spell and we’ll monitor her.

“Before we do anything with her we’ll wait until she has a clean bill of health.”

Xpression won the Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1200m) at Trentham as a two-year-old and was in fine form during the recent spring, adding two more wins to her tally, including the Gr.3 Barneswood Farm Stakes (1400m) at Ashburton, and being runner-up to Avantage in the Gr.3 Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) at Hastings.

The Showcasing filly then headed to Riccarton and ran a highly creditable third behind Media Sensation in the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) before being freshened for her latest outing.

“We’re devastated she’ll miss the Levin Classic and it would be nice to think she could be at Te Aroha for the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, but that’s unlikely now,” Lowry said.

While Xpression is taking it easy, Wait A Sec is ticking over on track for a jumpout.

Wait A Sec became the stable

Trainer Guy Lowry star when winning the 2017 Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) at Hastings, but has been off the scene since winning the Wairoa Cup eleven months ago.

“He had a tear in his tendon and has had a good long break,” Lowry said.

“We’ve been scanning him the whole way through and we’ve really been taking it day by day with

him, but he seems to be coming up well.

“He’s not far off having a jumpout, but we’ve got no big plans for him.

“The main goal is to get him going again and set him up for a really good prep in the spring.”

The eight-year-old Postponed gelding has won 13 races and almost $400,000 in prizemoney with his last campaign also bringing a win in the Gr.3 Anniversary Handicap at Trentham.

Trentham is the target for the next start for stablemate Real Beach, who completed a double when scoring convincingly over 2100m at Awapuni last Saturday.

The daughter of Nadeem had also won over the same course and distance last month and Lowry is keen to try her over even more of a staying test in a rating 82 2400m on January 26.

“She won well and I think there’s a bit more improvement in her,” Lowry said.

Shock exits for Leicester, Fulham Premier League side Leicester City were handed a huge FA shock as lowly Newport County bridged a gap of 74 places on the league ladder to dump them out of the English FA Cup yesterday.

Padraig Amond’s 85th-minute penalty fired the Welsh side into the fourth round as 2-1 winners after Mark Albrighton was guilty of a needless handball in the area.

The penalty came just three minutes after Rachid Ghezzal had levelled for Leicester, who had trailed since Newport’s well-worked opener, which was headed in by Jamille Matt from Robbie Willmott’s cross after just 10 minutes.

The upset follow another giantkilling earlier when Premier League strugglers Fulham were upended by fourth-tier side Oldham.

The Londoners took the lead against Oldham, three divisions below them in the League, through Denis Odoi.

Sam Surridge equalised with a penalty but Fulham missed a penalty through Aleksandar Mitrovic, who was brought on as a substitute to take the kick, before Callum Lang snatched the winner two minutes from time.

“It is one you have to savour. I am the most proud man in Oldham, I can’t believe it,” Oldham boss Pete Wild said.

Non-league Barnet caused an equally big shock as they won 1-0 at Sheffield United – 84 places higher than them in the English football pyramid – Shaquile Coulthirst scoring the only goal from the penalty spot on 21 minutes.

There were no such problems for Premier League champions Manchester City, though, as they turned on the style to cruise into round four.

City put out a strong side against Rotherham United and duly hammered them 7-0 to join Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in the hat.

South Canterbury won both of the matches at the Ashburton Domain, which were final hit-outs for both sides before they headed to Oamaru for the South Island Primary Schools’ Cricket Tournament in Oamaru. The tournament began yesterday and runs all week. Mid Canterbury started with Twenty20 matches against both Canterbury Country and North Otago, and today they were due to play Christchurch Metro Black and West Coast. Tomorrow they are set to play South Canterbury and Christchurch Metro Red. On Thursday the teams will turn their attention to 40-over matches.

Hopman Cup demise lamented

BY JUSTIN CHADWICK This year’s Hopman Cup is set to be the last one, and some of the world’s best players are going to be left disappointed.

The 31st edition of the mixedteams tournament has been its best one, featuring record crowds and attracting worldwide interest when Serena Williams played mixed doubles against Roger Federer.

But the event appears doomed, due to the creation of a new ATP World Team Cup, which is set to be launched in Australia from January 2020.

The men’s-only event will feature 24 teams and will be played across three cities, with Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney favoured to earn hosting rights.

Importantly, rankings points and about $20 million in prize money will be up for grabs.

The Hopman Cup’s future could be decided within weeks.

Williams, who has appeared at the Hopman Cup five times and is a two-time winner, said it would be “heartbreaking” if the event was scrapped.

And 23-time grand slam winner Federer was also sad at the prospect the Hopman Cup would be no longer.

“I’m curious to find out myself what will happen,” said Federer,

who has won the event a record three times.

“I want to see international tennis here in Perth. If it’s the Hopman Cup, that’s great.

“If it’s not, then it’s a pity. We had an unbelievable event here for so many years.

“These events like the Laver Cup and other team competitions back in the day, they get the players closer together – men and women.

“We share a lot of tournaments

together, but it’s not the same as when you play together or share the same court.

“The players have always enjoyed this event, and let’s hope it continues in some way shape or form.”

Federer led Switzerland to victory again this year, with he and Belinda Bencic beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber in the deciding mixed doubles.
