School accidents on rise BY DAISY HUDSON

DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The number of accidents at Mid Canterbury schools is on the rise, and it’s hitting taxpayers in the pocket. However, a local principal believes allowing children to take measured risks is “part of Kiwi culture”. Accidents at schools in the Ashburton District have jumped by 28 per cent from 2010, according to figures released by

the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). In 2014, 524 claims were made to ACC for accidents that occurred at schools in the district, with treatment costing the country over $92,000. That number had leapt from 2010, when 407 claims were received. The most common accidents included loss of balance, collisions, or being struck by a person or animal.

The number of national claims has also increased, rising by 18 per cent over the same period. However, Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy believes children should be given the opportunity to take risks. “I’m a firm believer in that, but not everybody is,” he said. “It comes back to that theory, that if the children have the opportunity to take measured

risks when they’re younger, they’re less likely to take those un-measured risks in fast cars when they’re older.” There would always be accidents no matter how hard schools tried to mitigate them, but most injuries were minor, he said. Wakanui School principal Hilary Boyce said it was important for pupils to be allowed to take some risks. “I think that in a controlled,

semi-safe environment, kids can test themselves without fear of too much damage,” she said. Mr Murphy believed most Mid Canterbury schools were “quite liberal” in their approach to activities. “There’s a couple of schools in Auckland that made headlines for allowing their kids to play bullrush and things, and you know, we’ve always had that idea,” he said. “We all share that idea, that is, allowing kids to be kids.”
