Farmers’ job to battle bugs BY LINDA CLARKE

Farmers will have to set up their own biosecurity borders at the farm gate to keep out unwanted pests and diseases that could destroy their farming businesses, says an industry leader. Footbaths for visitors and washdown areas for contractors might be some of the tools employed to stop pests like the radish flea beetle and Russian wheat aphid, herbicide-resistant ryegrass and stem rust from damaging crops, according to Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) CEO Nick Pyke. Pyke was speaking about biosecurity issues at FAR’s big crops field day at Chertsey trial site yesterday, where about 600 farmers and industry people gathered to hear about the latest research trials. He said some pests and diseases came to New Zealand because of trade agreements and the industry could do nothing about those except manage any incursion, but farmers could take care of their

own border security. Having a post-border plan to monitor, look for and eradicate pests and diseases that did make it in was crucial; there are around 50 threats to the arable industry. Pyke said black grass, spread onto roadsides around Methven when contaminated seed blew off the back of a truck, had been successfully contained, and management plans were in place to make sure pea weevil and velvet leaf also did not spread. Farmers in the Wairarapa are not growing pea crops this year and next in an attempt to eradicate the weevil. Straw that has come from the pea paddocks will also be destroyed. Arable farmers pay a levy each year to FAR, which conducts trials and research. Pyke said it had spent more than expected in the past year on biosecurity because of recent incursions.
