It could come down to a battle between bulldozer and budget as the Ashburton District Council ponders the future of some of its elderly housing units.

Like many local authorities around New Zealand, the council has been caught by changing regulations around insulation in rental properties.

The new standard comes into effect in July, 2021, if a unit is let to a new tenant and in July, 2024, for all units with existing or new tenants.

Not only is there a significant cost in the insulation requirements, the roof structure of some of the council’s 112

units does not allow sufficient space for insulation to be installed.

Once current tenants leave, its only option will be to leave the flats untenanted.

Insulation has been installed in all units where this is possible, but concrete floors and a lack of ceiling space means this is impossible for some, said council business support group manager Paul Brake.

Currently there is one uninsulated unit sitting empty, however, 16 units are unable to have insulation installed. In two insulation can only be partially installed.

“The 16 units are at Friendship Lane

and we are unable to insulate due to the constructions of the units – we would need to replace the roofs to do this work.

“The other two units are partially insulated as we can’t insulate under the floor as the floor height does not meet the minimum safety standard for the insulation staff,” Brake said.

For 16 years Eric Gardiner has lived in an uninsulated council flat in Friendship Lane, but he’s not complaining – now.

Mt Somers’ track huts – bookings only

The days of racing the clock to secure an overnight bed in the Mt Somers track’s Woolshed Creek Hut are a thing of the past; from October 1, beds will need to be booked in advance.

The track joins dozens of other walks around New Zealand where overnight accommodation must be pre-booked and that will affect trampers using both the Woolshed Creek and Pinnacles huts.

It’s a change that wasn’t an allround winner with members of the Mt Somers Walkway Society, who believed the first-in-firstserved system had served the track well for years and was an established part of its culture.

But feedback from track users indicated many had experienced the disappointment of arriving at Woolshed Creek, in particular, and finding all 26 beds had been taken, said society chairman Barry Austin.

In many ways the track had become a victim of its own success, with tramper numbers now at an all-time high and beds during the summer months in high demand, he said.

“We’ve all seen young families who’ve been on the track, get to the hut and find they have to walk

out again because there are no beds. We don’t want that to happen as these youngsters are the trampers of the future.”

At peak last summer there were more than 70 sleeping at Woolshed Creek on occasion, with trampers setting up sleeping

bags on the living room floor and the verandah.

While trampers would now have to plan in advance to use the track’s huts, Austin said becoming part of the DOC booking network was another step forward for the track. It might require a change of

habit for people who were track regulars, but for most users the booking system would be welcomed.

“Until now you’ve had to leave the Woolshed Creek carpark by 10am if you wanted to be sure of a bed for the night. It’s only a two-

and-a-half hour walk, but now people won’t be disappointed.”

Considerable work has been carried out on the track over the winter with track clearance and a rebuild on the steeper section of track leading into PInnacles Hut. “We’re looking at all the pinch points and we’ll be bringing them up to standard, making it a bit easier,” Austin said.

While overnight numbers were very high at Woolshed Creek, the society was working on increasing guest night numbers at Pinnacle Hut so it could build a case with DOC for an upgrade of this hut. It currently has just 17 beds and often these were used by large groups staying for two or three nights, making it difficult for one-nighters to get accommodation.

The track opened in 1987 and is described as a one-to-two day walk. It can be walked from one end to the other, or a return route via Mt Somers southern face can be used to create a 26-kilometre loop.

Growing user numbers has meant wardens have been in residence at both huts over recent summers.

The DOC online booking system for the Mt Somers Track huts will be effective from October 1 until April 30.

Ashburton council’s insulation conundrum From P1 Around 12 years ago the flats were freezing and Gardiner and wife June were spending $335 a month on power during the peak of winter. Running a heater or staying in bed were the only two ways to stay warm.

Gardiner bit the bullet and installed a heat pump and since then his power bill has dropped to $133 a month and his flat is toasty warm. And while his is one of the 16 that cannot be insulated, he’s not complaining.

abut being cold, Gardiner said.

The oldest of the council’s pensioner flats are the Mona Square units in Dobson Street. These were built in the late 1950s/early 1960s and were purchased from the Housing Corporation in July, 1983.

The council has to make some hard decisions on the future of its housing stocks.

On the table are the options of spending a considerable amount of money to renovate the older units, demolishing these and rebuilding or striking a deal with a third party to manage the housing portfolio.

Its policy is that the pensioner units should be self supporting

– rentals should provide enough money for ongoing maintenance.

Currently it is spending $200,000 a year on cyclic renewals, but reserves are rapidly being depleted.

An estimated $40,000 to $60,000 needs to be spent on each unit in order to upgrade it and the council would need to find tenants alternative accommodation while this work was done.

Estimates for a rebuild could run to $150,000 per unit and the council would need to borrow this money.

It is not alone in facing some tough decisions over changing insulation requirements, with Christchurch City having identified 930 of its properties needing

to be insulated to the new standards. It has claimed it does not have the funds to carry out this work.

It could be up to six months before a report to the council on future options for the pensioner units is completed.

Councillor Russell Ellis, who chairs the finance and business support committee responsible for the pensioner units, said the council’s policy around pensioner housing was that while they met a community need, they still had to be cost neutral in terms of their impact on rates.

Under that policy, rental was set aside for maintenance, but there was never a large enough

pool for significant renovations.

“There is talk of asbestos in some roofs and one thing leads to another and then another and at some stage we need to say, where are we going with these units, what is our long-term vision?”

One of the options that had to be considered by council was whether it would be more cost-effective to demolish some of the older flats and then rebuild, Ellis said.

“We have to ask, could we do better by the community by doing something else there?”

That suggestion should not be seen as a negative by the council’s tenants, the outcome could be a good and positive one, he said.

Fatal intersection under investigation

Safety options are being explored for an intersection in the Ashburton District where two people lost their lives.

In June two people died in a two-vehicle smash at the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Waimarama Road intersection, and in the aftermath, the Ashburton District Council and NZ Transport Agency staff are joining forces to come up with safety improvements for the accident black spot.

Speaking at the Ashburton District Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee meeting on Tuesday, NZTA maintenance contract manager John Keenan said that engineers would visit the site to investigate the issues that had been highlighted in the fatal crash report.

The accident involved a car and a truck at around 11.15am on June 4.

Options to improve the intersection could involve increased signage in the area, the addition of median islands and adjustment to vegetation in the area, such as removal of shelterbelt hedging close to the intersection.

dom accident, but after further investigation, it revealed there had been a number of crashes at the intersection and that it may warrant further investigation.

The safety improvements would be a joint venture between between the Ashburton District Council and NZTA as half of the roads involved with the intersection are council controlled and half are NZTA controlled.

Co-ordinating committee chairwoman Liz McMillan said she had received two letters from neighbouring landowners expressing their concerns about the intersection and would be

supportive of any improvements.

McMillan said neighbours were keen to assist with the process where possible in increasing safety at the intersection.

Katherine and Adam Glass, who farm adjacent to the intersection, said in a letter tabled at the meeting that they regularly saw the dangers of the intersection.

“As an example it was only on the afternoon of Saturday, June 8, that I witnessed the last accident at the intersection from traffic heading down from the mountain, albeit only a car being

rear-ended, which we all know the dangers of if a car is shunted into oncoming traffic as a result,” the letter said.

“This was while there were two police cars parked at the bridge presumably issuing infringements, so busy that it was I do not believe that the police officers were even aware of the incident as the cars pulled over and dealt with it themselves.

“Could you please advise on how we get all parties to be actively involved in this intersection and how we may be of service to assist with getting some changes made.”

“Most of these operations also detect cellphone offences and we issued 73 notices for using cellphones [while driving] over the month of July,” he said in a report to the Ashburton District

Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee.

Burgerhout said police also conducted a laser speed operation at the northern end of Ashburton on August 1, close to the Ashburton Motor Lodge, who had expressed their concerns about dangerous speeds near their business to the committee

previously. Sixteen offences were detected during the 75 minutes the operation took place.

Burgerhout said it was noteworthy that none of the speeds were anywhere near as high as data available had predicted, and that the location would be revisited over the coming months.

Police ops catch restraint offenders

In a one-year period highway patrol staff issued around 5400 speed notices to drivers in the Ashburton District.

A report presented to the Ashburton District Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee by Mid South Canterbury Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Burgerhout shone a light on the number of tickets police have been handing out to motorists.

From July 1 last year to June 30 this year, highway patrol staff issued 5400 speed notices.

Forty-eight per cent of those were in the range of being one to 15km/h over the speed limit.

More than 600 notices were issued by regular Ashburton police staff.

Learner and restricted drivers did not escape the attention of highway patrol staff, with learner and restricted drivers being issued 770 notices, while 110 notices were issued by Ashburton police staff.

Two-hundred intersection offences were dealt with by highway patrol staff in the year-long period, and 130 were dealt with by Ashburton police staff.

A total of 128 drivers were apprehended for alcohol or drug impaired driving, 43 of which were by highway patrol staff, and 85 by Ashburton staff.

Burgerhout said compulsory testing had begun in Ashburton recently to test for impaired drivers, but due to highway patrol staff only being trained to complete these, Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins has secured a Christchurch Traffic Alcohol Group member to provide training for non-certified members of staff to allow them to carry out the tests.

The test involves drivers being asked to leave their vehicle and complete a number of tasks such as walking a straight line and placing a finger on their nose.

If they are deemed to have failed the test, a blood test will be taken to determine if they are in fact breaching any laws around impaired driving.

Luxton applauds new vocational education system The government’s new vocational education system has been given the thumbs up by Labour Party list MP for Rangitata, Jo Luxton.

The new system will create a single and strong vocational system and Luxton said she was confident all learners would be given the education and training they deserved.

“The new system will allow for greater collaboration, flexibility and innovation and it will support the growth and future-proofing of industry sectors, employers, employees and learners,” Luxton said.

It would help tackle the longterm challenges of skills shortages across a number of industry sectors, as well as the mismatch between training provided and the needs of employers, she said.

“What the changes also mean is that the dual funding system will be more unified and simplified to encourage greater integration of on-the-job and off-the-job learning. This is important because

it will help learners access more work-relevant and tailored support. It will ensure new models of education delivery are responsive to employer and industry demand.”

For too long trades training and apprenticeships had played second fiddle to university education, but the announcement underlined the importance the government was placing on trades training and apprenticeships as a meaningful way of earning while learning, she said.

Transitioning to the new system would take time with no changes expected until at least April 2020, but the implementation would not be rushed, Luxton said.

Engineer fined for cellphone use An Ashburton man found guilty of driving while illegally using a cellphone may appeal his conviction and penalty.

Rodger Wightman Anderson told the Ashburton District Court yesterday he has holding his phone, but scratching his face, when a police officer saw him driving on Archibald Street in August last year.

Justices of the Peace Eric Weir and Maria Hibberd heard from Anderson and the officer in a short hearing at the court before entering a conviction and imposing a fine of $80, plus $30 court costs. Anderson will also incur demerit points.

The engineer said he had not been using a cellphone, but agreed he had been holding one.

The court proceedings to that point had been an expensive exercise and he was going to take the matter further. “I think it is pretty unfair, to be honest.”

Police constable Brad Turnbull said he was parked on Manchester Street about 5pm on August 21 last year, watching traffic 15 metres away on Archibald Street (State Highway One) for drivers using cellphones and people not wearing seatbelts.

Those two offences were among the top four risk factors, according to a police action plan, he said.

At 5.02pm he saw a white, flatdeck utility being driven south.

The driver was holding a cellphone in his right hand, and holding it against his left ear.

He followed the ute, with the patrol car’s lights flashing, until it pulled over after Grahams Road.

The officer said Anderson was at the wheel. He denied speaking on the phone and pulled out a flip-top phone and asked the officer to check the call log.

The officer said it was not the phone he had seen in use and said he had been able to see the back of the phone, and its camera porthole, from where he had been sitting on Manchester Street.

Anderson, when it was his turn to give evidence, said he had been making important calls on the phone that day.

“I got into the truck and I knew I had to ring a number back. I held the phone in my hand. I knew I had to do the call.”

It was just bad timing the officer saw it in his hand, he said.

He produced a record of calls he said related to the phone, which showed it had not been in use at 5.02pm.

He also said the police officer was mistaken in the cellphone he had seen and that the reason he hadn’t stopped was because he didn’t realise the patrol car was chasing him.

Police prosecutor Iva Hitila said Anderson did not answer the charge when it was called in December and was found to be guilty then by formal proof, evidence of the officer handed to the court. Then, much later, he had wanted to appeal the outcome.

JP Weir said Anderson had been charged with using a mobile

phone in circumstances that were unlawful. Those circumstances included making and receiving calls, texts and emails and in a way other than described in other sub-clauses of the relevant legislation.

“We have heard evidence from a police constable, who said he saw you holding a mobile phone to your face while driving. He gave evidence he had a good clear view on a fine day and he was able to identify you were holding a phone.

“In your defence, you have admitted holding a phone up to your face and you say it was to scratch your face and therefore the way you were using the phone appears to come under the description of the sub-clause F.”

Late change to BIll

At face value it looked like another pile of rubbish left sitting on the side of the road but, rather than being sinister, an attention grabbing pile of trash over the weekend was actually there because of good work.

Motorists, on State Highway One north of Ashburton, over the weekend would have been left a little disappointed at the pile which had been placed near the road side, probably presuming it was illegally dumped by some unscrupulous character.

But that wasn’t entirely the case.

The pile was the result of local group Litter-Free Ashburton cleaning out the tree area beside the State Highway.

The amount collected was too much for the volunteers to remove in their cars so, as per their agreement with the Ashburton District Council, the material is gathered into single collection points to be gathered up by the waste collector.

“It is much more cost effective to wait until we know where they all are, size up the problem and then send the appropriate vehicles and staff out once a week,” Ashburton District Council service delivery manager, Neil McCann pointed out.

Litter Free Ashburton’s Bev Skates said that the trees which border the eastern side of the busy highway were a big collecting point for rubbish.

“Unfortunately the trees provide a perfect cover,” she said.

“Ideally our group would like to see the bottom branches of the trees removed to open the area up and bollards placed at each end of the walkway so cars can no longer gain access.”

McCann is aware of the issue and suggested that the stretch

A late change to a bill described as de facto decriminalisation of drug use is likely to swing the balance more towards police prosecutions and away from health referrals, the Police Association says. But association president Chris Cahill said he still expected the Misuse of Drugs Amendment bill, expected to pass its third reading yesterday, to lead to a “significant” drop in prosecutions for drug use. The change to the bill means that the test for prosecuting drug users will be whether a therapeutic approach would be more beneficial “to the public interest” rather than for the individual involved.

“Council is looking at installing some bollards around the picnic area to prevent vehicles from moving from the picnic area onto the State Highway and vice versa.” he said.

Cost is also a factor in relation to de-limbing the trees.

“Some of the trees have been de-limbed up around the picnic area however, to do the entire length of trees would be a costly exercise. More trees will be de-limbed as our Open Spaces team have the capacity over the winter months.”

McCann reported that illegal dumping of rubbish, from the perspective of the entire district, wasn’t considered a major

problem, but was less than ideal.

“The levels of illegal dumping are relatively minor when taken in the context of the whole district, and these levels have remained fairly steady over the past few years.”

Illegal dumping is gone through to look for any type of personal information/identification.

If something is found the person concerned is contacted to see if they can help with the council’s enquiries.

“If we have bulletproof evidence, such as a witness account, and a vehicle registration number or even a photo of the offender in action, we will pursue that person for costs to

clean up the mess,” McCann said.

“If it’s a repeat offender, we then will go further and explore the legal options such as infringements and such.”

The penalties include; maximum infringement $5000 and maximum penalty on summary conviction $20,000.

Skates said the hope was that by keeping the area clear, people would be less inclined to leave their own rubbish behind when visiting.

“Rubbish attracts rubbish so if these areas are kept litter free, hopefully people will be inspired to dispose of their fast food containers and glass bottles etc sensibly.

“Don’t be a tosser,” she added.

New Zealand yachties have been involved in the rescue of a pair of distressed Danish sailors after their yacht started to sink near Nuie.

A distress call was made from the Gwendoline at 6.15pm (NZT) Tuesday after it hit an object in the water and started to sink. Rescue Co-ordination Centre NZ search and rescue said the yachties said they were going to abandon their vessel. Two yachts, Inspire from New Zealand and Filizi from Greece, were located around 16 kilometres away and quickly responded. By the time the Danish pair were rescued, their damaged vessel was taking on water very quickly.

Pharmac to fund two new cancer drugs NZME Pharmac yesterday announced plans to fund two new cancer drugs – one for breast and the other for lung cancer – pending public feedback.

The national drug funding agency are proposing that by December 1 Kadcyla, for HER-2 positive metastatic breast cancer, and Alecensa for positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer will be made publicly available.

A drug that treats relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, known as Ocrevus, is also planned to be funded.

They say they are seeking public feedback on the proposal to fund the three drugs by August 2019.

All feedback received before the closing date will be considered by Pharmac’s Board (or its delegate) prior to making the final decision on this proposal.

Earlier this year Lung Cancer Foundation chief executive Philip Hope said five people die of

the disease every day while a further six are diagnosed.

It launched a petition calling for more and fairer funding from

Pharmac, given the number of deaths caused by lung cancer each year.

Hope said currently lung cancer drugs get $2,771,115.00 – or 2.3 per cent – of funding.

More than 600 Kiwi women die each year from breast cancer, the nation’s third most common form of cancer.

Funding applications still pending include for Ibrutinib and Venetoclax for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia; Lenalidomide for multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer; for Lynparza and Avastin to be funded for ovarian cancer; six drugs for myeloma; Myozyme for late onset Pompe disease, a rare and fatal metabolic disorder; and medications including Keytruda, Osimertinib and Crizotinib for advanced lung cancer.

Ten arrests in huge drug raid NZME Police have arrested 10 people and seized over $1 million in cash and assets following a major operation targeting the supply and distribution of methamphetamine.

More than 150 staff executed search warrants at 17 residential and commercial properties throughout the wider Auckland, Canterbury and Otago districts yesterday.

The seizures took place across a number of Auckland suburbs including New Lynn, Blockhouse Bay, Avondale, Manukau, Mt Eden, Grey Lynn, Karaka, Greenlane, Manurewa and Northcote, with search warrants also taking place in Avonside, Christchurch and central Dunedin.

The warrants are part an operation dubbed Operation Maddale, run by the National Organised Crime Group.

Operation Maddale is a 10-month long investigation into the supply and distribution of methamphetamine and subsequent money laundering throughout the country.

To date the investigation has seized 20kg of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of more than $12 million.

More than $550,000 in cash was also seized, along with several high-end vehicles including a Porsche Macan, Jeep Wrangler, three Harley-Davidsons, a Ford Ranger, a Yamaha bike, and a jet ski.

In total, more than $1 million worth of cash and assets have been restrained.

The National Organised Crime Group’s Detective Inspector Greg Cramer says the seizures and arrests have disrupted a sophisticated methamphetamine network within New Zealand, and will prevent a significant amount of harm to our communities.

“This drug has a devastating impact on our communities and affects countless Kiwi families.

The seizure of 20kg of methamphetamine will prevent significant further harm to those families,” he says.

Ten people, aged between 21 and 42, will face more than 70 charges between them, including supply of methamphetamine, possession for supply of methamphetamine, money laundering and participating in an organised criminal group.

They are due to appear in the Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin District Courts this week.

This investigation remains ongoing and police could not rule out the possibility of further seizures and arrests.

Pedestrian dies following pursuit NZME A pedestrian died following a police pursuit in New Brighton, Christchurch yesterday.

The incident took place in the coastal suburb, with police confirming the pursuit took place on Hawke Street.

In a statement, police confirmed that a pedestrian had been struck around the same time.

Unichem Pharmacy manager George Mansour said they heard the sound of a police chase and moments later saw someone on the ground.

He said a little while later a police officer came into the store to tell them someone had passed away.

Acting Canterbury District Commander Mike Johnson said a pursuit was initiated after a person of interest failed to stop for police.

However, it was abandoned due to the manner of the driving.

Sam Heselwood was working nearby on Pages Rd when a man wearing a grey hoodie sped past in a Subaru Legacy wagon with a police car in pursuit.

Shortly afterwards, the same car sped back the other way, with eight or so police cars behind him, Heselwood said.

Again, several minutes afterwards, the same man, now in a van, drove back in the other direction.

The police officers had by that point appeared to have pulled out of the pursuit, Heselwood said.

Johnson said the vehicle was located shortly after the chase was abandoned and two of three were arrested without any troubles.

“Shortly afterwards the third occupant stole a nearby vehicle and rammed a police dog van,” he said.

“Soon after the stolen vehicle collided with a pedestrian at the intersection of Hawke Street and Shaw Avenue, New Brighton.”

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian died and inquiries are under way to locate the driver of the second fleeing vehicle.

“Police are currently working to identify and notify next of kin,” Johnson said.

“The full circumstances are being investigated by police.”

China warns protesters NZME China warned it will be “only a matter of time” before it punishes those behind two months of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong that have increasingly devolved into violent clashes with law enforcement.

The comments by Yang Guang, spokesman for the Chinese Cabinet’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, are a further indication that Beijing will take a hard line against the demonstrators and has no plans to negotiate over their demands for political reforms.

Singling out “brazen, violent and criminal actors” and the “meddling hands behind the scenes” as they focus on law enforcement efforts, Yang said, “As for their punishment, it’s only a matter of time.”

China so far has not visibly intervened in the situation, though it has published a series of strongly worded editorials in state media condemning “violent radicals” and “foreign forces” allegedly inflaming them.

Speculation has grown that the Communist Party-led central government will deploy the military to quell demonstrators after Chinese officials pointed to an article in Hong Kong law that allows troops already stationed in the city to help with “public order maintenance” at the Hong Kong

The longtime composer of The Simpsons has sued over his dismissal from the long-running series, saying he was discriminated against because of his age and a perceived disability. The lawsuit filed by Alf Clausen in Los Angeles Superior Court for age discrimination, wrongful termination and retaliation comes nearly two years after Clausen says he was fired from composing and conducting all music for The Simpsons.

The 78-year-old Clausen’s lawsuit says he was told that he was being replaced because the series was “taking the music in a different direction”. No other details were included.

Expert to examine will A Michigan judge agreed to allow a handwriting expert to examine wills discovered in couch cushions after Aretha Franklin’s death. During a hearing, Oakland County Probate Judge Jennifer Callaghan also placed administration of Franklin’s estate under court supervision. That means the court will have a role in major decisions about her estate, including the sale of property. A handwritten 2014 document shows Franklin apparently wanted her son, Kecalf Franklin, to serve as the representative of her estate. Erich Speckin was hired by the son to verify his mother’s handwriting. Speckin told Callaghan it will take him about three hours to analyse the documents. After Franklin’s death last August her heirs agreed to put the estate in the hands of Franklin’s niece, Sabrina Owens.

Abortion bill gets it half right D

on’t get me wrong, I’m not against an overhaul of New Zealand’s abortion laws, that’s long overdue, but there are a few worrying issues hiding in the mass of words that are the current Bill.

Absolutely, abortion should be removed from the Crimes Act; absolutely it should become an issue of choice for a woman. It’s archaic thinking to tie abortion only to saving the life of a mother or preserving her physical or mental health.

The way the law currently stands whether or not your plea for an abortion is successful depends on the approval of two doctors. Luck of the draw who you get. Choose to get one any other way and you’re breaking the law.

The new Bill gets it right in many respects but, in including a clause that would allow abortion after 20 weeks with the support of a health practitioner, it goes way, way too far.

How you view a post 20 week abortion will have everything to do with your own experience with pre-term babies.

If you’ve spent time in the neo natal unit in Christchurch Hospital, spent time watching tiny, tiny babies, born many

weeks before their time, battle for life, heard and seen the success stories that many of those babies become, you might think differently.

Fifteen years ago, a young man close to my heart was born at 24 weeks and five days gestation.

He weighed just 800 grams. Today he is an academically able, musically gifted, spirited, caring and, in every way, a normal teen.

Today a baby of his gestation could have been an abortion statistic if the pregnant woman had found an amenable health practitioner.

It all comes down to viability.

When is a baby a baby and when is it not?

It’s difficult to argue with the right of a woman to choose an abortion in her first trimester, or

even up to 16 weeks. After that it’s a pretty grey area.

Not too many years ago a baby born at 32 weeks gestation was considered viable. With new ways of supporting premmies, viability came down to 28 weeks, then 25 weeks and now there are babies born at 23 weeks who not only survive but who go on to lead normal, healthy lives.

That’s just three weeks over the 20 week abortion mark.

It’s not too much of a leap to push that viability barrier out even further. And yet, as a country we’re considering allowing abortions beyond 20 weeks.

Yes, the criteria will be around the woman’s physical and mental health and her wellbeing, and one assumes that takes into account issues around the health

of the unborn baby, but that’s a pretty broad brush.

It’s getting into morally uncomfortable territory.

No argument, a woman should have a right to choose what happens to her body, but the time for making that choice must come well before the halfway mark in a pregnancy.

The Bill has its first reading today and MPs will vote according to their own conscience. If it passes, the public will have an opportunity for input.

In my book there are two issues at stake here, The first is around removing abortion from the Crimes Act – that’s a no-brainer; it’s the second issue, late term abortion that’s the worrying part and a rethink is needed.

oor old Simon B, desperate for a killer political punch to slow the ever-upward progress of the higher and higher flying St Jacinda, has, this week, landed a low blow sufficient to leave the pundits and the people gasping.

He called her a “part-time PM”, while her back was turned as she pluckily ploughed her way through the angry sea to visit the forgotten few of Tokelau, one of the outposts of the empire of Aotearoa, and not visited by a New Zealand PM for 15 years.

Bridges felt she should have changed her schedule and gone, instead, to the location of the latest Maori protest over “stolen” land – despite there being in place a well-established agreement between iwi and Fletchers – Ihumatao.

To many – of whom I am one – Ardern’s decision not, immediately, to go to Ihumatao, was absolutely the right one, rather than run the risk of inflaming an already touchy situation.

The difficulty for Bridges remains the same, a female opponent.

In his younger days when, no doubt, he dreamt – as per Cameron in the UK, while he was at Eton – of becoming Prime Minister of Aotearoa, New Zealand and, with his pugnacious approach to life, trading blows with his Labour opposite number, until there was blood on the floor and the elation of a victory well-won.

real rough and tumble of politics – as immortalised by the redoubtable Robert Muldoon, whose fists we’re permanently clenched as he anticipated his next round with the silver-tongued David Lange, by whose verbal cuts and thrusts Rob – and his Mob – were frequently baffled and broken.

For Bridges, such adrenalin-fuelled moments are not really available.

That his opponent is, indeed, an attractive female, means his range of parliamentary invective is limited and his room for sneaky manoeuvring curtailed.

In other words, he can’t be the really full-blooded National leader, “coming out swinging” – as they say – and landing political punches on the personage opposite.

His natural respect for a woman prevents him from unleashing the sort of criticism he would like to let go, as he knows – or should do by now – anti Jacinda remarks are counterproductive and more likely to lead to a bump in the polls for the PM and another dive in Bridges’ standing in the preferred PM stakes.

As Gilbert and Sullivan put it – to describe a totally different situation – “a nice dilemma he has there!” (we have here) “that calls for all our wit”!

Meanwhile, we hear, Wily Winston, despite having been closely involved in the discussions regarding the new Abortion Bill and having not mentioned such an outcome, is now demanding a binding, nation-wide referendum on the issue before he will allow it to go any further, in parliament or beyond.

Understandably, that has incensed Andrew Little, the Justice Minister, who was clearly of the belief all ‘i’s’ had been dotted and ‘t’s’ crossed leaving only a formal vote to ensure its passing to the statute book.

What’s more, Tracey Martin, NZ First member and the minister most directly involved, has also been caught completely unawares, having had no idea her own Party was going to insist on such a procedure.

Thus the new abortion bill hangs in the balance while Winston again flexes his political muscle and makes it clear the day-to-day existence of the creaky coalition depends entirely on his whim. If he doesn’t like “it” it doesn’t happen.

Under MMP such travesties are only too possible.

With Peters it was ever thus, and could be for yet more years, if he can find himself an electorate, real or “list”, for next year’s election, prepared to have him.

where the residents would still feel honoured to have him as their MP – hard to believe, I know, but true.

One more matter to raise, the still on-going fall-out from the Labour convention of three years ago from which accusations of sexual harassment emerged.

The passage of time seems to have done nothing to heal the wounds of that event and now we are getting disguised voices from darkened screens expressing disgust with the lack of action and announcing decisions to resign from the Party.

It makes you wonder whether, despite her star rating, there aren’t traces of clay adhering to the otherwise fashionable shoes of PM Jacinda.

Across the seas, Trump continues his mission to undermine the presidency of the United States with an endlessly tweeted tirade of insults and bigotry.

It must be hoped, from the assortment of would-be Democratic candidates for the presidency, one will be found who has what will be needed to unseat Trump before the harm he continues to cause becomes irreparable.

Meat companies need to work together

Silver Fern Farms’ chief executive Simon Limmer says export meat companies need to work more collaboratively, rather than undermining each other.

“The parochial views from the past have really held up this industry,” he told SFF’s farmer conference in Christchurch.

“The challenge for us today and the chairs, directors and farmers of other companies is to sort this out.

“We have got to look for opportunities where we can collaborate.

“There are many ways that we can still be competitors, but do things far more sensibly,” Limmer said.

While some farmers previously campaigned for a merger between SFF and farmer co-operative Alliance Group in a bid to inject more profitability into the meat sector, SFF instead opted in 2016 to form a partnership with Chinese company Shanghai Maling. It is now equally-owned by Shanghai Maling and farmer shareholders.

“We have a balance sheet that allows us some comfort in deciding on how we want to invest,” Limmer said.

“We have lived hand-to-mouth at some points in history, but it is not the case today.”

SFF had invested $85 million in infrastructure in the last three years and would continue similar invest-

ment in future.

While it was a good time to be in the meat industry, the mood of farmers was somewhat pessimistic, Limmer said.

A challenge was finding enough staff, with an estimated shortage of 1000 staff across the meat industry at peak season. Other primary sector industries were also struggling to recruit staff.

“The cost of labour is going up, the flexibility of labour is becoming tighter and the availability of labour is non-existent.

“We are at zero unemployment in my view.

“We are leaving value on the table because we can’t deliver the market specifications we want,” Limmer said.

Surplus processing capacity was also constraining the industry. “These are the empty hooks because of declining livestock numbers and some ill discipline regarding how some people are investing in the industry.

“This is a significant challenge. We need to fix this part of the industry to ensure our manufacturing base is cost-efficient and we are being driven by the market and not livestock procurement.”

In 2017, SFF closed its Fairton plant near Ashburton, following a continued decline in regional sheep numbers.

SFF needed to cater for consumers

where cost was not an issue, but who sought healthy and quality food that was ethically produced, Limmer said.

Rather than just being an export company, SFF was moving closer to the market.

Grass-fed is now a major selling point and prominent on all its branded packaging.

To more closely link the producer and consumer, SFF wants farmers to deal directly with its livestock representatives. “SFF needs a direct relationship with suppliers, rather than a middle person giving mixed messages.”

The rise of plant-based protein such as the Impossible burger was an inevitability and meat producers shouldn’t be scared of it, Limmer said.

“It tells me that there is a demand for protein and that people want different proteins.”

Providing sufficient protein for a global population estimated to rise to nine billion by 2050 would be a struggle.

From 2005 to 2050, global demand for beef was expected to rise from 64m to 106m tonnes, while mutton demand was expected to lift from 13m to 25m tonnes. Demand for other meats would also grow, including pork, expected to rise from 100m to 143m tonnes.

“We haven’t got a demand problem,” Limmer said.

Global dairy prices fall NZME Dairy prices reversed nearly all last month’s gains at yesterday’s Global Dairy Trade auction, with prices falling across the board as weakness in the Chinese yuan made its presence felt.

The GDT price index dropped by 2.6 per cent compared with a 2.7 per cent gain at the last auction in mid-July.

The auction, the first since China allowed its currency to drop to an 11-year low on Monday, yielded an average auc-

tion price of $US3253 a tonne against $US3412/tonne at the last auction.

“Offer volumes were higher but the weaker yuan would have restricted the buying power of Chinese buyers who tend to buy about half the dairy commodities sold via GDT,” ANZ Bank said in a commentary.

The price of whole milk powder, which has the greatest bearing on Fonterra’s farmgate milk price, fell by 1.7 per cent $US3039 a tonne, following a 3.6 per cent gain at the last auction.

Banking Obudsman Nicola Sladden adds: “Consumers are entitled to ask for information about the relationship between the mortgage broker and any banks, including information about remuneration structures. The laws governing disclosure for mortgage brokers are currently under review and disclosure requirements are likely to be strengthened.” Don’t be the customer who is too embarrassed to ask.

Banks and mortgage brokers often recommend splitting your mortgage in three. One portion is on a floating rate so that you can overpay and also take advantage of falling rates should that happen; one third on a short-ish term rate and one slightly longer.

You’ve entered a contract Bawden says he doesn’t have a lot of sympathy for the banks and their fees. He is on their side, however, when it comes to break fees.

“People fixing mortgage interest rates should understand clearly that they are entering into a contract which very simply states that they agree to borrow a certain amount of money for a certain period of time at a certain rate. You take a flutter when you sign up for a fixed rate. If the rates fall, you lose.

“You don’t see people leaping to break fixed rate contracts if rates subsequently go up.”

No one has a crystal ball Mortgage broker Campbell Hastie of Go2Guys points out that noone can really predict what markets are going to do. That means fixing is always going to be a gamble.

“If you can do that then tell me what the Lotto numbers are for tomorrow night please.”

You could break your mortgage at a cost, re-fix then find they go down again.

“The best course of action is to mostly ignore the market and focus on your current situation and future plans. Know your own numbers. Set some goals. Get an expert eye on it, and re-fix accordingly.

That’s what we preach in this office.

If you take that approach then interest rate movements don’t matter as much.”

Ask the question It costs nothing to ask the bank if you can break. You may be lucky and get off the hook if there is no cost to the bank. If you do manage to get out of your contract make sure you think deeply about your next move, says Tierney.

“It’s really important when you are fixing rates in the first place to think ahead.”

New Zealand’s official cash rate is now in line with that of Australia. On Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of Australia held rates steady at 1 per cent but left the door open for more cuts. The Kiwi dollar dropped to 95.60 Australian cents from 96.50 cents immediately before the RBNZ release.

Tuffley said even after yesterday’s surprisingly big cut in New Zealand “the risks remain skewed to an even lower trough than the current 1 per cent OCR. We forecast a further 25 basis point cut to 0.75 per cent, in November,” he said.

Regarding employment, the committee said it was pleased to see labour market data held up relative to expectations in the June quarter but “agreed that the balance of risks to achieving its consumer price inflation and maximum sustainable employment objectives was tilted to the downside.”

New Zealand’s unemployment rate hit an 11-year low in the June quarter, falling to 3.9 per cent from 4.2 per cent in the March quarter.

“Slower GDP growth over the past year is expected to reduce capacity pressure and reduce employment relative to its maximum sustainable level in the near term. Inflation is likely to remain below the 2 per cent target mid-point throughout 2019 and into 2020,” it said.

As a result “a lower OCR is necessary to achieve our objectives.”

The Reserve Bank slashed the official cash rate by 50 basis points to 1 per cent due to a softer outlook for employment and inflation, slower economic growth and weaker global conditions. The New Zealand dollar tumbled.

“Our actions yesterday demonstrate our ongoing commitment to ensure inflation increases to the mid-point of the target range, and employment remains around its maximum sustainable level,” the monetary policy committee – which includes three external members – said in a statement.

New Zealand’s central bank now has a dual mandate to support maximum sustainable employment and keep annual inflation between 1 per cent and 3 per cent over the medium term, with a focus on the midpoint of 2 per cent. Annual inflation is currently running at 1.7 per cent.

Sixteen of 17 economists polled

by Bloomberg had expected a 25 basis point move while one had expected the bank to stay on hold.

According to a summary record of meeting, the members debated the relative benefits of a 25 basis point cut and communicating an easing bias, versus reducing the cash rate by 50 basis points now.

“The committee reached a consensus to cut the OCR by 50 basis points to 1.0 per cent. They agreed that the larger initial monetary stimulus would best ensure the committee continues to meet its inflation and employment objectives,” it said.

Changes to the central bank’s forecasts in the latest monetary policy statement also show a chance for another cut as the forecast in-

terest rate track eases to 0.9 per cent in late 2020. The prior monetary statement in May showed the OCR tracking going from 1.7 per cent to 1.4 per cent in March 2020 before lifting in late 2021.

The “RBNZ’s OCR forecast now has a low of 0.9 per cent, still implying an easing bias. The meeting minutes and statement were less clear on the need for further action, but continued to note downside risks,” said ASB Bank chief economist Nick Tuffley.

The New Zealand dollar recently traded at 64.24 US cents from 65.44 cents just prior to the statement.

According to the central bank, “GDP growth has slowed over the past year and growth headwinds are rising. In the absence of additional monetary stimulus, employment and inflation would likely ease relative to our targets.”

It noted that annual GDP growth was 2.5 per cent in the March quarter, “below our estimate of potential growth in the New Zealand economy.”

The Reserve Bank cut its forecast for GDP growth in the June quarter to 0.5 per cent from a prior forecast of 0.7 per cent. It now sees GDP growth of 0.6 per cent in the September quarter versus a prior forecast of 0.9 per cent.

It said, however, that monetary stimulus is expected to give impetus to growth from late 2019. Market interest rates have declined since the start of 2019. This supports consumption and investment, and keeps the New Zealand dollar exchange rate lower, the committee said.

Do you kick yourself when mortgage rates fall?

Many Kiwis regret having fixed at a higher rate when rates continue to nosedive.

The trouble is that you may have to pay a break fee to get out of your existing mortgage.

When rates plunged in 2008 many borrowers were desperate to escape the contracts and angry when banks hit them with astronomic break fees. These days the banks can only claw back the actual loss, says Sue Tierney of Sue Tierney Mortgages.

Tierney points out that lenders are legally allowed to charge break fees. It means you’re probably not going to be better off overall once you’ve paid the break fee.

Fixing provides certainty People generally fix for one of two reasons, says mortgage broker Geoff Bawden, of Bawden Consulting. Either they want some certainty around their level of outgoings or they think the new rate is a good deal. Tierney says the certainty of knowing what you are going to pay for the period of the fix makes up for paying a little extra should rates fall before the end of the fix.

skin-side down. Look for the plumpest parts and partially slice horizontally into them to create a flap. Lift the flap and flip it towards a gap you wish to fill, to create a more even rectangular shape. Cover the meat with plastic wrap and pound it with a rolling pin to flatten and firm into place. Trim off any hard or fat gristly bits. Or, if using a carvery or full leg, ask your butcher to remove the bone.

■■ Combine the stuffing ingredients. Place the stuffing in a strip down the middle of one side of the meat then lift the edge and roll the meat tightly as though rolling a swiss roll, tucking in any stray pieces. Tie. ■■ Preheat the oven to 200°C or 180°C fan bake. Heat the oil and

butter in a roasting pan and brown the lamb well on all sides.

Remove from the heat, place remaining rosemary sprigs into the pan and place the roast on top. Roast for 45 minutes.

■■ Poke a metal skewer or thin knife into the centre, count to three and then test it on the inside of your wrist. It should feel warm – if it doesn’t, cook for another 15 minutes and try again.

■■ Place the lamb on a warm plate and cover with foil to rest for 15 minutes before removing the string and carving.

■■ Serve warm in thick slices with gravy, or cold in thin slices with cranberry jelly.

Club news www.guardianonline.co.nz Ashburton Community Committee Of The Blind 57th Annual Report, 2019 Recently we held our AGM at The Plains which has become our regular place for committee and the following lunch meetings for members, every fourth Thursday of the month.

We acknowledge and thank Lorayne Oakley of The Plains and are also very appreciative of the wonderful entertainers who give so freely of their time at these gatherings.

Usually every second month we also fit in an outing. These have included the Rotary Club of Ashburton and the Tinwald Red Cross’s afternoons of entertainment, both of which have entertained the blind for 70 years.

The blind group came under the Red Cross banner when it first began.

We also enjoyed afternoon tea at the Lake House helping to celebrate Ossie Symon’s 100th birthday; Christmas Dinner at the MSA; meeting up with the Christchurch Blind at The Stables; a cuppa at the Weirs at Lake Hood; and the ever popular BBQ at Coniston with generous hosts, Donald and Carol Williamson.

Red Puppy Appeal in March and Blind Week in November, were both organised by Andrew McDonald. We thank Andrew and all collectors for making these events successful.

Our organisation also appreciates the support provided by Advance Ashburton, Methven RSA, MSA Club, Pakeke Lions, Rotary Club of Ashburton, Waireka Croquet Club, Methven’s volunteer drivers, Allcomers Band, Hinds WI, Ashburton Taxis and private donors.

Our committee and volunteers are a team of hardworking, caring, wonderful people, dedicated to helping the group’s members.

Recently we have received resignations from two very long standing committee members. These we accept with acknowledgment and appreciation of their many years of service – Pamela Bird for 27 years and Rona Hayward for 26 years.

In total this committee have given over 215 years to the local blind with our volunteers adding a further 32 years, a total of 247 years.

There were many scores in the low 30s

and a few of us, has beens, in the 20s.

Who knows what was to blame, it was a beautiful day, the course, as always, was in great condition. Can’t think what else to blame for bad golf, maybe a king tide or something in Greymouth or Venus was rising in Uranus, either way there was plenty of poor scores to go round.

This Saturday we have round two of the Brandon Cup and with no great scores shot, everyone should still be in with a shout as all three scores count, final round is next week.

On the sponsors corner one of our great sponsors Hamish Niles picked up one of the favourite prizes, sinking the longest putt on number 9 picking himself up a lovely voucher to take Karen out for a spot of Thai cuisine, care of Tom and the great gang at Charming Thai.

It’s always a super feed down there be it lunch or dinner. Pop down and sample some wonderful dishes. Many thanks for all the help Tom. Story of the week is a cracker, some folks might not be aware of the tradition of the drive that does not reach the ladies tee. It has a few names, none suitable for a family paper.

Tradition states that the man should walk to and play his next shot with his pants around his ankles to prove he is a man when playing his second shot from behind the ladies tee. Nobody wanted to see that, so it changed to a round of drinks in the bar afterwards for the disgraced golfer.

On our second hole, the ladies is some 50 metres in front of the men’s and has caught out a few over the years, yours truly included. Saturday last, a scratch golfer from now on referred to as Hefty Kay, lent into his drive, watched it decapitate a few worms finishing a massive 25 metres from the tee. With hoots of laughter and smacking of lips in preparation of free beer ringing in his ears, young Hefty took another almighty heave at the ball, this time moving it 15 metres.

Records have been checked and it seems that it was 1895 since a scratch golfer last played his third shot from behind the ladies tee, it did not name the said golfer but ask Spud because I think he was playing that day. Good golfing

Citizens Association The Citizens Association was delighted to welcome Ashburton District Council Chief Executive, Hamish Riach to its meeting last week.

Hamish outlined his reasons for pursuing this position and his goals and then answered questions put to him by the members.

We were able to be updated on the various projects under way in the town and receive some background into the reasons why the bridge siting, for instance, is not likely to be changed.

This of course has been an ongoing topic of discussion at Citizens meetings with members holding strong views.

Lynnford Rural Women Ashburton, being a rural town with no public transport, have once again stepped up to help with newcomers to the District, some with English as a second language.

Mid Canterbury Newcomer Rural Driver Licensing Scheme, a free programme through Rural Support is a three-year pilot programme, well supported by various philanthropic organisations and the local council.

Wendy Hewitt gave us an insight into how the group works and helped with mainly females gaining their driver’s licences to ease them into life in the district so they can be independent and find friendships with others.

Intake is limited to 12 participants on each course. Two lessons with a driving instructor are included in the course and a subsidised driving test. So far there has been a 90 per cent pass rate.

Volunteers help with child minding and transport and mentoring while trainees get to grips with New Zealand road rules and other road users.

After Wendy took her leave, our meeting commenced.

Members stood in silence for past members.

Many members attended and formed a Guard of Honour at the funeral of Mona Wright, a passionate member of WDFF and then Rural Women, first at Flemington, then with that branch closure in the 1980s transferring to Lynnford.

While at Flemington, Mona filled roles as secretary and competition secretary and was renowned for her skills in baking, sewing and knitting.

The following week members attended the funeral of Nancy Moore, a past member and long-time local resident of Lynnford.

Following on from the framed print of last month, Phyllis has done some enquiring and has found that it was presented to the Lynnford School in recognition for the work pupils did in collecting coupons after World War Two. It is yet to be determined where its next home will be.

The Plains Ladies The Plains Ladies met on Monday July 22. Birthdays and Anniversaries were acknowledged and we discovered that we had five people who qualified to attend the over 89s function which will be held later on in the year.

The financial update was reported and explanation was given about where our subscriptions are spent.

Our guest speaker for the day was Paul (PUP) Chamberlain who came to talk to us in his role as Health Promoter for the Canterbury District, speaking on Mental Wellness issues.

Before morning tea he gave us an insight into his family background and how he became a policeman. He also gave us some hard facts about the life of a policeman especially in rural districts.

The sights and sounds and the realities of life that most people don’t come into contact with.

Eventually these pressures take a toll and over a career lifetime they build up stress levels.

He asked us five questions: How do you deal with stress in your life? Do these strategies work for you? Are they a positive influence for you and for others?

Are they sustainable? Are they safe for you and other people?

After morning tea Pup explained how stress can build up over a period of time and eventually it gets the better of us.

Women are usually much better at dealing with things than men.

After 38 years in the police force and after a series of traumatic incidents eg the Christchurch Earthquakes, he decided a change of direction was necessary and now is enjoying his job promoting mental wellness.

He gave us the new Mental Health Foundation pamphlet with five ways to Wellbeing. Connect (talk and listen, be there, feel connected) Give (your time, your words, your presence) Take Notice (remember the simple things that give you joy) Keep Learning (embrace new experiences, see opportunities surprise yourself) Be Active (do what you can, enjoy what you do, move your mood).

Ko hits back at ‘haters’, ex-coach NZME

It was her second consecutive missed cut at a major after having similar struggles at the Evian Championship in France where she finished seven shots behind the cut line.

Ko’s sister Sura, who is part of Lydia’s management team, also chimed in on the situation, defending her sister’s form issues.

“I don’t think this is the time where we need to explain anything beyond and there shouldn’t be any particular reason with this struggle either,” Sura Ko told Radio Sport.

“Every sports person is the same, tiring from the travel, technique issues, etc but for now we want to just hang in there and try the hardest we can to get back to the level.”

The Kos’ response could be seen as a direct reply to Leadbetter who has been an outspoken critic of their parents’ influence on Lydia’s career.

“I just think that those parental issues have been such that I think she’s been misguided. I think her parents are naive as far as what should happen in the game of golf.

“I think her parents need to sort of let her go and do her thing. She’s 21-22 years of age now. She could control her own career. She should know what’s best for her.

“She’s not a 12-year-old anymore.

So they need to let her go, let her fly, let her leave the nest so to speak and find her own way. If she can do that, I mean yeah we could see Lydia back.”

Leadbetter’s advice for Ko was to take some time off golf to “get her head together, relax, get away from the game and rethink this whole thing”.

Lydia Ko has fired back at the “haters” after her former coach David Leadbetter criticised her “misguided” relationship with her parents.

The Kiwi golf superstar has slumped to two consecutive missed cuts at majors and fallen to a world ranking of 23, after holding the number one spot for 84 weeks while at her peak.

On Tuesday, Leadbetter – who was Ko’s swing coach from 2013 until the end of 2016 – spoke out about the 22-year-old golfer’s drop in form, saying it was “a very sad situation to observe”.

“Her team have to be thinking that they have made some huge mistakes taking an unbelievably talented player and turning her into ordinary,” Leadbetter told Radio Sport.

“I hope she gets it back but restoring confidence is never the easiest thing to do. Her parents have a lot to answer for – a case of unbelievable ignorance.”

In an Instagram story, Ko hit back at her former coach saying the words from her haters are only making her stronger.

“Thank you to the haters for making me stronger and push me to be the best version of myself,” Ko wrote on Instagram.

“And thank you to each and every one that have supported me, your love makes a bump feel like a smooth ride.”

Golden moment for Laird

Bernice Laird became the 30th player in the history of Ashburton Indoor Bowls to win her gold star for five championship titles at the weekend, winning the annual championship triples alongside her husband, Geoff and Russell Ellis.

The trio fought off the challenge of a strong field of competitors to claim the title, giving Bernice her fifth title, Geoff his sixth and Ellis his 11th.

Played at the McNally Street Stadium on Saturday, nine teams took to the mats with five doing enough to qualify for post-section play.

The Ellis skipped trio had to do it the hard way, winning through the play-off to make the top four against the Gilbert family of Colin, Merv and Jackie before they faced Martin and Jenny Nordqvist in one semi-final.

A score of two on the last end of the game was enough to give Ellis and his team victory while in the other semi-final match up another family side of Ken, Rowena and Laura Mackenzie emerged victorious over Winston Lee, Doug Thorne and Georgina Black.

In the final Ellis and his side proved too strong for the Mackenzie trio, winning comfortably.

While it was Laird’s fifth title, the 11th for Ellis shifted him into an elite category of players to make it past 10 titles.

He joins; Michael Lawson (35 titles), Sandra Keith (32), Ken Mackenzie (23), Graeme Chapman (22), Alister Keith (16), Grant Wilson (12), Chris Talbot (11) and Kevin Smith (11) as some of the most decorated players locally.

Russell Ellis skipped his side to success in the Ashburton championship triples on Saturday, gaining his lead, Bernice Laird her gold star.

but it wasn’t to be a positive day for the visitors who were handed a tough defeat.

Despite a strong start by Ash-

burton, they weren’t able to keep up with the pace of a very strong Canterbury side which featured a number of current and former

New Zealand representatives and also a number of form South Island players as well.

Canterbury won 93-51.

Warriors desperate to avoid 20-year NRL record NZME The Warriors will hope to avoid an unwanted milestone tomorrow against Manly.

As well as needing a good performance against the Sea Eagles to get their season back on track, the Auckland team should have extra motivation to earn a victory.

Another defeat would create history, bringing up the longest streak of losses at their Mt Smart base in the club’s history.

The team’s victory song hasn’t been heard in Penrose since round four, a stretch of almost 18 weeks.

In that time the Warriors have dropped games to the Cowboys, Knights, Broncos, Storm, Panthers and Raiders.

To put that stretch in context, the last time the Warriors endured such a poor run at home, coach Stephen Kearney was still playing.

His last game for the club – a 38-12 loss to Manly – in round 24 of the 1998 season started a sequence that extended to the first week of May in the following year.

Stephen Kearney This year’s run has been terminal to the team’s overall chances of success.

Their record away from Mt Smart has been respectable (55), with wins in Wellington, Brisbane, Penrith, Newcastle and the Gold Coast, while they were also dreadfully unlucky in Melbourne on Anzac day and against the Eels.

But the home form (two wins, six losses) has been a killer.

Losing to the Storm (round 13)

is no embarrassment, and the Raiders were red-hot last week, but some other performances are harder to explain.

While there have been some close games, the only wins at Mt Smart in 2019 have come against in the bottom two of the NRL ladder.

“Maybe change the name of the stadium, put on the away strip,” joked Blake Green. “[I’m] not sure what the difference is.”

Senior forward Adam Blair pointed to the extra time spent together on trans-Tasman trips as a correlation.

“When you go away you build

a lot of close relationships and that connection stays really tight because you do a lot of good things together,” said Blair. “[But] I couldn’t put a finger on why the team hasn’t been performing at home. There has obviously been some pretty poor performances and we’ve been really inconsistent.”

For his part Kearney played down talk of a pattern.

“Every game is different but we have put ourselves under pressure,” said Kearney. “Against the Cowboys our execution allowed them back into the game and it was the same with the Broncos

here and the Panthers match.

There were parts of our performances where we beat ourselves, because we didn’t execute well enough.”

On a couple of occasions this season the Warriors have stayed together in hotels the night before a match in Auckland to replicate the away day feel, but Kearney said that is not feasible all the time.

“You have to remember, we are away for three days when we go to Australia,” said Kearney.

“It’s not an hour drive from Parramatta into the city, or 40 minutes along the M4 to Penrith. The boys are away a fair bit so to bring them home and then take them away again into camp is a lot.

Sometimes we do that, where we think that’s important. “[But] it doesn’t matter if it is a home or away, executing what we think is going to work for us is the most important thing.

“We have shown that it doesn’t matter if we play away from home; if we can do it away from home, why can’t we do it at home?”

Archer ripped for appearing in 2nd XI game NZME The loss of Jimmy Anderson may not be as big a blow to England’s Ashes hopes as cricket fans think judging by the scary showing Jofra Archer delivered overnight.

A video of the fast bowler went viral in the UK as he tuned up for a likely test debut at Lord’s by frightening, then dismissing, a host of hapless Gloucestershire 2nd XI batsmen.

Archer, who was a revelation as England won its first ever World Cup title and bowled the super over that clinched victory over New Zealand in the final, is expected to be given a test debut after Anderson was ruled out of the second Ashes Test with a calf injury.

England’s leading test wicket-taker could only manage four overs in the first innings of the 251-run loss to Australia at Edgbaston before being struck down by the same injury he sustained playing county cricket for Lancashire a month ago.

Archer dealt with a side strain during the World Cup and trotted out for the Sussex second XI as he works his way back into long-form cricket and proves his fitness ahead of the second test.

If he’s fit he’s almost certain to replace Anderson at Lord’s and English selectors would have loved what they saw from the Barbados-born quick with the red ball in hand.

He decimated Gloucestershire’s batting line-up, taking 6/27 from 12.1 overs as he helped skittle the opposition for just 79 before lunch on the first day.

One ball in particular provided a terrifying sight and did the rounds on social media – a searingly quick bouncer that decked back after hitting the pitch and beat both the batsman and the wicketkeeper.

It looked like an easy bye was on offer but the non-striker didn’t appear too keen to run through for a single and get himself on strike to face the fearsome English quick.

Just a few hours after being posted online the footage had already been viewed more than 180,000 times. But Australian cricket great Dean Jones didn’t like what he saw.

“I am sorry but ECB contracted players should not be playing 2nd XI cricket,” Jones tweeted in response to the video. “Never liked it when our guys did it in Australia either with (Josh) Hazlewood and (Mitchell) Starc!”

Jones added it was “bloody dangerous” to have someone of international calibre sending down thunderbolts to players of a lesser standard, and said a

centre wicket practice against top-quality stars was a better way to prove a bowler’s fitness rather than dropping them down to 2nd XI level.

“I played county cricket. I captained Derby. I know what guys can do and can’t do. This is not the platform for these guys to prove their fitness. It’s bulls***,” Jones said.

Real pace can make batsmen freeze and you only have to look at the wickets Archer took of batsmen staying leg side of the ball, throwing their hands at it without any footwork and getting caught behind the wicket to appreciate just how quick he was bowling.

Archer also demolished the stumps a couple of times en route to his six-wicket haul.

Up-and-coming players usually relish the chance to play against professionals but facing up to a man who can hit the 150km/h mark must have been terrifying for some of the Gloucestershire batsmen who, according to English cricket writer Chris Stocks, were extremely young.

“This has been a brutal introduction to top-level cricket for many of these Gloucestershire lads,” Stocks wrote on Twitter.

“Eleven of the 12-man team are aged 20 or under. One, 19-yearold, Milo Ayres was hit in the grille.”

Archer will have an important job to do if called into action at the home of cricket after Anderson left a huge hole in the England side when he was unable to bowl in Birmingham.

But despite Anderson coming into the series opener under an injury cloud, captain Joe Root said he didn’t regret playing the man with 575 test wickets to his name.

“It was a group decision to select him,” Root said. “He passed every fitness test, we went about it how you normally would.

“It’s one of those freak things, he pulled up in the middle of a game. The other bowlers work extremely hard to take it up but we weren’t able to build enough pressure.

“It’s easy in hindsight. Jimmy went through every medical check absolutely fine and it was a unanimous decision from all parties. Sometimes things go against you and you have to find a way of getting through the game.

“We miss a bowler of Jimmy’s calibre. He has a fantastic record on this ground and against Australia in England. We are still very capable of taking wickets and being more competitive than we were here in the rest of the series.”

Tested for representative honours With the club rugby season nearing its end, attention is turning to representative action. So on Sunday, the Ashburton Celtic Rugby Club played host to an open skills and fitness session for players keen to represent Mid Canterbury at under-13 level this season. Beware the Tongan Thor NZME Wallabies front rower Sekope Kepu has sent a warning to the All Blacks about their not-so secret weapon: ‘Tongan Thor’ Taniela Tupou.

Tupou – whose 135kg frame along with his power both in the scrum and with the ball earned him the superhero moniker – will likely feature against the All Blacks in the first Bledisloe Cup clash on Saturday in Perth.

Kepu, Tupou’s rival for the Wallabies’ No. 3 jersey, was full of praise for his younger teammate ahead of the anticipated match in Perth, saying the 23-year-old prop is the “strongest guy I have ever seen”.

“He is definitely ahead of where I was when I was 23,” Kepu told rugby.com.au.

“We always have a giggle about it because we are 10 years apart.

He is 23 and playing tighthead and he is the strongest guy I have ever seen in terms of his physique and the way he lifts in the gym.

“He has got it all and now I am starting to see his mental preparation.

“I room with him a lot and to see him go about his work, he is up early and either stretching or we are trying to do stuff together.

“But yeah, I have seen him since he first came into camp in 2017/18. He has that confidence now and we are going to push each other as hard as we can to do our best.”

Kepu said he was excited by the Wallabies’ new-found power in the pack, something the side has lacked in over the years.

“What excites me is the guys that came on and finished the job.

It is probably something we have lacked over the years, and Allan is

still out,” Kepu said.

“He hasn’t come back, and that’s even more exciting for us as a front row and also as a forward pack.

Canterbury honours for more of our own When Canterbury take to the field at the annual Jock Hobbs Memorial National Under-19 tournament next month, a couple of Mid Canterbury boys look set to feature.

A 31-strong Canterbury Under-19 squad was named this week to contest the South Island tournament, ahead of the national tournament, which will be held in September.

And within that squad were

two former members of the Mid Canterbury Combined Schools’ Team, a combination of players from Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College, Josh Ree and Elama Touli.

Ree and Touli both now play their club rugby in Christchurch, with Ree playing for Christchurch, and Touli playing out of the Belfast club, where both had put in strong showings in the 2019 season.

They’ll now form part of a Canterbury Under-19 team that will play the under-19 teams from Tasman, Southland and Otago, and those results would determine the seedings for the South Island teams at the national tournament.

Another promising former Mid Canterbury schoolboy, Liam McCormack, has also been named in the Cantabrian Colts team.

Their success followed hot

on the heels of another couple of players with Mid Canterbury roots – Dallas McLeod and Josh Bokser – making the Canterbury squad for the 2019 Mitre 10 Cup. Canterbury’s Farah Palmer Cup squad would also have a Mid Canterbury influence, with Melanie Puckett making the squad and the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union’s new women’s and schools’ development officer Nicole Purdom named in the wider squad.

‘Vulnerable’ talk inflames

In the 19th century, the main colony of Perth was built about 20km up the Swan River on a low-lying land of lakes and swamps due to ease of defence.

Any invading ships that made it over the protective sandbar would presumably be vulnerable to attacks on either side of the river.

Cities don’t come much flatter than this one perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean, so it was about making the best of what you’ve got and preparing accordingly.

Which brings us in a roundabout way to the Bledisloe test between the Wallabies and All Blacks at the magnificent new Optus Stadium built within a clearing kick of the Swan.

That’s because the talk of this All Blacks team being “vulnerable” as suggested by former Wallaby Phil Waugh may have handed All Blacks coach Steve Hansen all the metaphorical ammunition

and high ground that he needs in order to find the performance he and his team are craving.

If there was an edge missing from the All Blacks in Buenos Aires and Wellington recently, there is no excuse for it to be absent in a sold-out stadium filled with gold replica jerseys on Saturday.

There are many New Zealanders here but the locals will ensure the All Blacks know they’re in enemy territory and that, combined with what is at stake – a cherished trophy played for over the next two tests – should combine to bring out the best in the visitors.

Talk of vulnerabilities will be music to Hansen’s ears and could lead to smoke coming out of rival coach Michael Cheika’s because nothing provides motivation like criticism, implied or otherwise, from an opposition camp.

“They’re not nearly as dominant as they were – almost to the point where you could say are they the best team in the world at

the moment? I really don’t know,” former loose forward Waugh said recently on Australian television.

Shot fired and narrative established, it was down to the Wallabies to attempt to douse the flames, starting with outside back Reece Hodge. A prediction: Neither Hansen nor Cheika will say anything which could be construed as remotely inflammatory when they face the media separately today.

“I definitely wouldn’t say they’re vulnerable,” Hodge said.

“We are confident in ourselves and what we’re trying to do but they’re going to be extremely confident themselves as well.

“They would have been trialling a few things ahead of the World Cup. I’m sure they’re confident that’s going to come to fruition on Saturday.

“I don’t think they’ll be talking about any vulnerability in the camp. It’s up to us to really go out there on Saturday and test them as much as we can.”

The All Blacks and Wallabies

have a long and rich playing history which has featured classic tests, huge disappointments for both sides, flare-ups, fist-fights and last-minute winners. The All Blacks won all three tests last year fairly convincingly, but the year before they needed a last minute try from Beauden Barrett to win an extraordinary test in Dunedin.

The bottom line is the Wallabies last held the Bledisloe Cup in 2002 but have always had the ability to cause the All Blacks difficulties due to their inherent confidence no matter the situation. It is a special rivalry.

“They’re the team that has really been able to get under our skin the most, probably,” assistant coach Ian Foster said. “They know us well, they’d love to beat us and we know it’s a battle royale.”

Cheika and company may indeed sense the All Blacks are vulnerable, but they would be wise to keep it to themselves this week and next.

NZME Former Wallabies halfback George Gregan will always be remembered by Kiwi rugby fans for uttering three simple words: “Four more years.”

During the 2003 World Cup, Gregan used the words as a sledge toward his All Blacks counterpart Byron Kelleher in the dying stages of the Wallabies’ 22-10 semifinal win over their New Zealand rivals.

The words rubbed salt into the wound as the All Blacks’ World Cup drought extended to a minimum of 20 years as they fell out of the 2003 competition.

However, the tables have now turned. The All Blacks will go into this year’s World Cup looking to win their third consecutive title, while the Wallabies haven’t hoisted the Cup in 20 years and haven’t won the Bledisloe Cup in nearing 16 years.

Speaking to Fox Sports, Gregan said because of recent results Kiwis have no issues with engaging in a bit of banter with the Wallabies great.

“I cop it for that line all the time,” Gregan said.

“There was no premeditated, I’m going to say this when the moment comes, but you’re in the heat of the moment and it was Byron Kelleher, we had a feisty, halfback relationship.

“And when you’ve got a chance to give it to each other – it was that moment where we were on top.”

The former halfback reprised the line in Air New Zealand’s latest All Blacks-inspired safety video, and said it was the first time he’d said the line since the 2003 semi-final.

“They had a bit of fun (in making the ad), I do like that about them, there’s a bit of that Anzac spirit,” he said.

“They had a bit of a laugh and I said ‘I know you’re really sensitive because every time I come back into your country, every Kiwi gives it to me over saying that’.”

Show-jumping prize paves way to breeding success NZ Racind Desk Saturday’s Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m) added some black-type lustre to a brief foray into thoroughbred breeding for Carole and Doug Isaacson.

The time-honoured Riccarton feature was won in strong style

by Dez, who was bred by the Dannevirke couple in unusual circumstances.

Doug Isaacson is a respected name in show-jumping, where he competed with distinction for several decades before retiring earlier this year at the age of 71.

One of his many victories in that arena came in Masterton a decade ago, where the winner’s prize set the Dez story in motion.

Doug Isaacson is currently in Scotland, but Carole reflected this week on how the unusual story played out.

“It all started with a prize that Doug won, but he didn’t really want to breed a racehorse and I did,” she said.

“Doug was competing in a Grand Prix during a show in Masterton, and Sam Williams from Little Avondale Stud walked up to the announcer and said he’d add a service to Zed to the prize.

Zed was standing at Little Avondale at that stage.

“Doug won that competition, and then we had to choose a mare for the service to Zed. I happened to see a mare advertised somewhere, where the lady that owned her said she was upsetting a gelding that she had. I did some research and saw that this mare had won a couple of races, and I thought she might be suitable.”

The mare was Black Falcon, a daughter of Felix the Cat. From 25 starts in the Karen Zimmerman stable, she recorded two wins and four placings. The victories came over 2060m at Wanganui and 2200m at Awapuni, both in 2006.

Dez (inside) winning the Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m). commented on what a lovely mare she was,” Carole Isaacson continued. “Then he got on her and said she felt terrific to ride, and he thought she was a very good jumper too. I said, ‘Too bad – she’s going in the broodmare paddock’.

“Unfortunately, Dez was the only foal we were able to breed from her. We lost her the following year while she was foaling a warmblood. That’s the sad thing about it.”

When the time came to start preparing Dez for a racetrack career, the Isaacsons had their hands full with their show-jumpers. The beneficiary of that was Simon Wilson, an old friend from equestrian circles.

“Once he was a rising twoyear-old, we were busy with our show-jumpers and knew we weren’t going to be able to do both,” Isaacson said.

“Doug knew Simon well from show-jumping, and when he was over in Waipukurau one day he offered to sell him the horse.”

Wilson shares ownership of Dez with friends Sam Lennox and Paul Mitchell, and he trains him at Waipukurau.

Nursed back to health after a tendon injury in the early stages of his career, the now eight-yearold gelding has won seven of his 17 starts. He finished third in last year’s Winter Cup before going two better on Saturday.

“We’ve been very proud to watch everything that he’s done,” Isaacson said. “We’ve followed him closely all the way through and we’re really pleased. Simon has done a great job with him and it’s been fantastic to watch.

“Saturday’s win was special.

He’s a horse who clearly loves racing and tries so hard.”

for now, Isaacson has not ruled out dipping her toes into thoroughbred waters again in the future.

“We’ve had a bit to do with racing over the years without being directly involved – Doug’s dad was very much into it,” she said.

“The only breeding we’ve done in recent years is a few crossbred horses, who we’ve sold.

“But, now that Doug’s not doing the show-jumping any more, you never know.”

Dez becomes the 11th stakes winner for Grangewilliam Stud stallion Zed, the well-bred son of Zabeel who has continued to deliver quality middle distance horses, stayers and jumpers.

Standing at $6000+GST this season, Zed is the sire of dual Group One winner Verry Elleegant, who is nearing a return and expected to be a major player in Australia in spring.

Trainer Regan Todd’s road from Wyndham to Woodend led him to a 100-win milestone at Forbury Park on Sunday.

Todd got to 100 wins on New Zealand soil when King Of Heroes scored a deserved win for driver Tim Williams.

The Southland born horseman’s career has taken off recently, with 71 of his 100 wins coming in the past three seasons.

Before then, Todd trained a small team of his own while overseeing the beach training arm of Mark Jones’ stable.

That progression has given him an introduction to stable management that set him up for further success, Todd said.

“I never had more than four or five horses of my own before having a bigger team for the last three seasons.”

“It is probably good the way things have worked up, to build up over time and get a clientele behind you.”

“I am very lucky in that respect, I have got some great owners.”

Prior to working with Jones and becoming the man behind former star trotter, Master Lavros, Todd gained experience with Brendon McLellan and David and Catherine Butt.

The combination of Todd’s undoubtedly ability as a trainer and the band of owners he has gathered has seen his stable’s success has continued to grow since he branched out on his own.

Last season he notched a personal best 27 wins, following tallies of 26 and 18.

Todd has ticked off training 100 winners in New Zealand and kicked the goal every trainer strives for – training a group 1 winner.

His two Australasian Breeders Crown race victories with Show Gait mean Todd trained a total of 29 winners, last season, and his total career haul stands at 102 wins.

With two big goals already checked off, Todd’s sights are firmly on the new season.

By the end of tonight, the four teams to fight it out for a spot in the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one final will be known.

Heading into the last games of the third and final championship round at the EA Networks Centre, two teams are firm in their spots for the semi-finals, and they are College A and Celtic A. But what order they finish up in will come down to tonight, with the top two sides set to square off in tonight’s final round, and if you were to go off last week’s performances you’d be hard pressed to pick a winner.

College A have arguably been the more consistent of the two.

They’re the only unbeaten team

in the third round so far and only dropped one game in round two, to a United A side that went through round two unbeaten.

Celtic A, while they looked to be back to their best in their win over United A last week, did go through a bit of a lull towards the end of the second round and at the start of the third round, which included a loss to College A in their last meeting which – literally – had the young College players jumping for joy.

Whoever ends up doing the celebrating at the end of tonight’s game will be the team that will top the table heading into the finals.

College A are currently on top with 16 points, while Celtic A are second on 13 points, with a bonus point they picked up along the

way meaning a win will put them ahead of College, so long as they don’t concede a bonus point.

Meanwhile, the battle for third and fourth is pretty much down to United A and Hampstead A. Fifth placed Methven A may still have a mathematical, but very outside chance, of finishing fourth. But for that to happen it requires them to smash United A tonight, and relies on Mt Somers beating Hampstead A. While Hampstead A were well beaten by College A last week, going down 41-23, Hampstead A will still head into tonight’s game as favourites, with Mt Somers yet to win a game in the third round and only having picked up one win in round two.

Methven A were the team beat-

en by Mt Somers in round two, and while they got revenge for that loss by beating them 21-14 last week, the second half of the season has been far from Methven A’s best.

While they’re on the improve again, they could find the going tough again tonight, with a United A side that – despite having lost two on the trot now – still look like title contenders, in front of them.

Three weeks ago, United A hadn’t been beaten all season, but College A and then Celtic A have managed to topple them in the past two weeks.

United A were the team automatically promoted into premier one at the end of this season’s first round, after being relegated last season, and back down in premier two it’s the team that took their

place that’s shaping up to be the team to beat.

Celtic B were relegated from premier one at the end of the first round, and while Southern A were the top team in premier two in round two, Celtic B are on top in round three.

Celtic B will tonight take a College A side currently occupying the fourth semi-final spot, while the teams occupying second and third – Southern A and Methven B – will also square off tonight, leaving Celtic C and Hampstead B to play in the night’s other game.

The top four teams have already been found in premier two, with the bottom two teams – Celtic C and Hampstead B – unable to catch up with the fourth placed team.
