The number of farms confirmed as having been infected with mycoplasma bovis has risen to 59, with the two latest properties both from Mid Canterbury.

The increase is consistent with a gradual rise in numbers since the first property was discovered in July last year, and Ministry for

Primary Industries (MPI) officials are optimistic cases will not skyrocket as spring milk testing gets under way.

MPI remains committed to phased eradication in the face of the gradual increase, and will not be drawn on when a “tipping point” may be that will see the department instead shift to management of the disease.

The two latest properties are Ashburton dairy operations, one with about 1000 cattle and the other about 270 cattle.

“The response is making good progress as we work towards our goal of phased eradication,” said an MPI spokesperson yesterday.

“It is possible that the number of IPs (infected properties) may rise as we move into spring milk

The spokesperson said it had been pleasing to see the number of farms under movement controls decrease substantially over the last few months, and over the weekend there were four properties that had their IP status re-

Tim’s on his way to help fight wildfires

Mayfield Rural Fire Force’s Tim Rowe is among a contingent of 54 firefighters who flew out of Auckland on Monday to help combat wildfires in Canada.

Canadian authorities requested assistance from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) last week, with more than 520 fires blazing across the country, including 453 in British Columbia.

FENZ national manager, rural Kevin O’Connor said the deployment would provide valuable developmental opportunities for the personnel taking part and highlights the high regard in which New Zealand fire personnel are held internationally.

The New Zealand contingent will be made up of 18 threeperson crews who will be engaged in fire suppression and an 11-person management team which will assist with the management of multiple fires. They have been drawn from Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, the New Zealand Defence Force, forestry companies and contractors – and will operate as part of a joint Anzac deployment with fire and emergency personnel from across Australia.

Deputy rural fire officer Don Geddes said three Mid Canterbury firefighters put their hands up for the task, but numbers were eventually limited to just one firefighter from the area.

It is Rowe’s first time being deployed overseas.

Four-wheel-drive engines will be revving, and mud will be flying, at a winch challenge at Staveley this weekend.

Round three of the Superwinch Mainland Winch Challenge will be held on Saturday, and it will be a first for the district as organisers open it up to the public.

4x4 Events president Craig Fraser in Christchurch said the club was

looking forward to holding the event at a farm paddock, complete with steep banks and gullies, on Boyds Road.

Up to 30 drivers will race in a series of time trials, and there was a maximum of 250 tickets available, of which many had already sold.

Winch challenges involve fourwheel-drives ranging in value up to competition-built vehicles costing over $100,000.

Go easy on AirBnB, chamber of commerce advises New taxes on accommodation websites like AirBnB and Bookabach could affect tourists who cannot not afford to stay in hotels, Auckland Chamber of Commerce says.

Online accommodation providers in Auckland were charged a “bed tax” and business rates for the first time last week, which lifted some of their rates bills by more than 200 per cent.

Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett criticised the charges yesterday, saying that central government already claimed business tax from these small businesses.

Auckland Council was entitled, at most, to charge a business rate on the part of a private residence which was being used as a commercial operation, Barnett said.

“But this simply perpetuates the business differential the

The bed tax was initially only applied to hotels and motels, but was extended to online businesses after tourism and business groups complained of unfairness.

Barnett said AirBnB was a modern response to tourists who were looking for new places to travel, stay and meet local people.

“Its pricing model allows new groups to travel and enjoy new locations that they may have been locked out of by the traditional accommodation providers,” he said.

Auckland Council said the revenue from the new charges will fund half of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development’s budget for putting on ma-

It said it was careful to make the rates as fair as possible and noted that two-thirds of submissions on the charges were supportive.

The council last week released figures showing some AirBnB owners could make up to $80,000 a year if they rented out their property on a fulltime basis.

Some Herald readers who rented out their properties said that did not reflect the various costs of managing a property.

They said that on top of mortgage costs and rates, they had to pay tax on any income and service fees to AirBnB. There were also costs for cleaning, upkeep of the property and gardens, on-call support, maintenance and repairs, water, power, and wifi.

Dairy section Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers chairman Chris Ford said the two new properties being added would be a blow for the farmers involved. He had always personally supported a goal of prolonged management over phased eradication.

“My question is what is the tipping point for MPI to say, yes, we admit it’s bigger than we thought,

and we are going to go to prolonged management,” Ford said.

However, the important thing was farmers involved were getting the support they needed, and he wanted to see MPI work with farmers’ compensation claims quickly and efficiently.

MPI national incident controller Dr Catherine Duthie said any decision to move from eradication into managing the disease would depend on a range of factors, not just the number of IPs. Staff were about to start the spring bulk milk testing, which

would provide a more accurate view of the presence of the disease in New Zealand.

“This includes the number of actual infected properties, whether any previously unidentified clusters of the disease have gone undetected so far and the likelihood of eradication,” Duthie said.

“For now, MPI will continue to work with our partner and support agencies, the government and affected farmers with an end goal of the eradication of mycoplasma bovis.”

Ten year journey to find a new home

It’s been a long road, but the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club will see out its 35th year in a new headquarters and display shed at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds.

The club has spent nearly 10 years looking for the perfect spot and recently signed a licence to occupy land alongside the A&P association’s home industries pavilion on Seafield Road. They’ve wasted no time and builders have already begun work.

A huge concrete pad will be laid and a 20m x 30m shed erected by Structure Wise. The building schedule is tight but the club expects their new $500,000 base to be built by the time the A&P association holds its annual show on October 26 and 27.

Association past president Chris Watson said the vintage machinery was a good fit with the group’s agricultural interests and would attract more people to the showgrounds throughout the year.

The clubrooms space could be hired out for business and private functions, for people with a special interest in farm and vintage machinery.

The club had previously investigated sites at the Plains Museum in Tinwald and on William Street, but both locations had consent and cost issues.

The club’s 100 members are mostly drawn from the Ashburton District and they are looking forward to sharing parts of their private collections in the display space.

Hall said the displays would change regularly and complement other Mid Canterbury events like Wheels Week.

“This is a great site with easy access and use of the green area if we are running vintage rallies or working weekends.”

Money for the shed has come from a bequest, grants and fundraising.

Weepu convicted Ex-All Black Piri Weepu has been convicted of drink-driving after being found slumped behind the wheel in the drive-thru at a McDonald’s restaurant. He had been charged with drink driving at more than twice the legal limit after an incident in Lower Hutt at 2.49am on July 15. Weepu was fined $600, ordered to pay $130 court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

It was last summer, standing togclad upon the Tolaga Bay wharf, gazing five metres down to the churning sea, that I came to the conclusion I thoroughly detest falling into water.

Friends were hurling rude names and vivid insults from the water far below, along with the classic “gummon, it’s not even that cold in here.” To their disappointment, I politely insisted I was warm, dry and pretty happy up top and they had a plastic bag’s chance in hell of making me jump and subsequently suffer.

I mean I don’t mind falling. I don’t mind the odd night on the drink. But falling into the drink – absolutely not.

However, yesterday at the EA Networks Centre Pools, that same intrinsic fear of falling into water came to my benefit – as I bumbled my way through one of the new aqua boarding sessions and attempted to stay afloat.

The centre will later this month become the first place in the South Island to offer the full body workouts atop a floating board in a pool. The concept has already swept Europe and promises to mobilise the body like nothing else. So naturally I offered myself as a lab rat (soon to be drowned rat) as several Ashburton instructors undertook a trial class.

Aqua boarding is probably not for absolutely everybody – and it’s certainly not for the very vomit-prone. Upon arrival I was asked whether I was likely to suffer motion-sickness.

I’m fortunate, having built sturdy sea legs from several years of sailing. But I learnt that of the eight boards, those at one end of the pool wriggle more than those at the other. I still decided to opt for one slightly on the safer side,

in the interest of general co-ordination and no abrupt pool contamination.

Under poolside instruction from fitness instructor Julie Williams and alongside exercise gurus like Anna Johnson, I mounted my mighty steed.

The boards are grippy on top and moored at either end to prevent any drift away disasters.

Music began pulsing through the speaker – and the class was under way.

First up was a spot of yoga. Several sun salutations went down

without disaster – then it was stepped up a notch. A succession of squats, proceeded by mountain climbers.

There was a mildly brutal exercise where every second boarder stood and rocked from side-toside, while those in between attempted to plank.

There was a do-able set of ab exercises and then a couple of us tried lunges (with strong emphasis on tried).

As the class continued, the board was undulating more and more and I was probably look-

ing as elegant as a sheep on ice.

Then it happened. A very ugly, bad word came out of instructor Julie’s mouth. Burpees.

That marked my tipping point, both figuratively and literally.

And splish splash – I was taking a bath.

Nevertheless, I found myself smiling and laughing through the wobbles and whoopsies. Training atop a bobbing board apparently takes getting used to, but it’s far from aqua-boring.

Writing this, solid ground feels so damn good – but I’m also incredibly eager to sign up for more. A thank you to folks at the EA Networks Centre for bringing aqua boarding to town because it certainly floats my boat.

The EA Networks Centre will be holding a free aqua boarding trial session on August 20 from 7 to 8pm, for members and nonmembers. A timetable for future classes will be revealed on the evening.

The SPCA is investigating a video shared on social media showing a group of teenagers appearing to torture a cat before killing it. A concerned member of the public sent a copy of the video to the Herald. The person said it occurred in Christchurch on Saturday, July 28. It is understood the video was shot by a student at a Christchurch high school. The video has been shared widely on social media application Snapchat. SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen said they had been sent the footage and had referred the incident to their inspectorate for investigation.

DOC blamed for deaths A Canterbury family says the Department of Conservation is to blame for the death of their two pets keas. The birds had been a part of Ron Stewart’s life for more than 30 years but on Saturday he found them dead in their aviary, Stewart told Stuff. On Friday, a DOC ranger and wildlife veterinarian visited their home in Darfield to observe the birds. Their behaviour was observed and the birds were weighed and a blood sample and a feather were taken from each.

Ron said he pleaded with DOC not to take the blood and when they did it took more than an hour for the blood to be taken, causing the birds to scream in pain. Kea are protected by law, with a maximum fine of $100,000 or six months in prison for anyone convicted of killing one.

RDA the winner of MPs’ rugby bet

A friendly rugby bet between two National MPs has benefited the Mid Canterbury Riding for the Disabled – to the tune of $450.

MP for Rangitata Andrew Falloon and MP for Hutt South Chris Bishop found themselves at odds with their opinions on the Crusaders semifinals with the Hurricanes on July 28, and subsequently decided to place a wager, with the winnings going to a charity of their choice.

Falloon said “as is usual” Bishop was talking up the Hurricanes’ chances.

The two each contributed $150, roughly the cost of new footy jersey, along with another $150 from a generous member of the public who oversaw what was happening on Facebook. They agreed whoever won would have the winnings go to a charity in their electorate.

The move paid off for Falloon.

“Naturally the Crusaders won, Chris was pretty bitter, and the charity recommended was Mid Canterbury Riding for the Disabled,” Falloon said.

On Friday he dropped in to meet chief instructor Maxine Hooper, chairman Brian Early and horse Rapunzel and present the $450 of winnings.

TimeBank’s Big Swap goes down a treat with punters

Punters left the first ever TimeBank Big Swap with smiles on their faces and arms full of goodies on Sunday.

In the first local event of its kind, members and non-members of the group were invited to drop off their unwanted or surplus goods at the Sinclair Centre – and in exchange, take home an item offered by somebody else.

Items from books to bagged walnuts, punchbowls, board games and even ceiling insulation changed hands during the afternoon, which one attendee even described to co-ordinator Kate White as the best TimeBank event yet. “It was quite a social event too. One of our aims is to connect people … and people there were talking, hearing about what each other are doing in the TimeBank – giving each other ideas,” White said.

The event also gives unwanted items a second chance at life rather than being dropped into the landfill, she explained.

Around 20 tables of goods were on offer and tokens were used to ensure everyone had a fair chance at picking up a new treasure.

White said they are hoping to repeat the event next year, with more time for people to put things aside.

Encounter with a shovel

A shovel on the Methven Highway outside of Ashburton almost ruined the electric car experience for reporter Susan Sandys.

Never have I been so conscious of the rise in gradient from Ashburton to Methven as when driving an electric car this week.

I hit the road for the daily 5pm commute from work to my little ski town home on Monday, with 139 kilometres left in the tank. Half an hour later, I was happy to arrive home safe and sound, but concerned that it had used 73 of those kilometres to travel just 35 kilometres.

The maths didn’t quite add up, as with just 66 kilometres left in the tank I wondered how I was going to make it back to Ashburton the next day.

There are no public fast-charging EV points yet in Methven, besides one at Brinkley Resort for Teslas.

Therefore, charging would have meant running a cord from a power point at home to the vehicle. Unfortunately my single garage has stored all manner of items over the years but has never had room for a car, therefore the cord would have to run across the lawn to the vehicle parked in the driveway.

With it being a usual cold winter’s evening, the prospect of having to keep a door or window slightly ajar for the cord overnight did not really appeal, and I figured I would just go easy on the accelerator the next day.

The drive home had seen me speed up a couple of times to overtake, including three cars banked up together at one point travelling at just 88 kilometres per hour.

Plus I figured getting to Ashburton may not use as much power, as it would be downhill, with its elevation of 100 metres above sea level below Methven at about 300 metres.

The next morning I had to scrape ice from a frost on the windscreen before putting the heater on, and began to suffer what electric vehicle owners have come to know as range anxiety – would the car have the range to get to where I needed to go?

Out of Methven I noticed the number of kilometres in the tank had dropped to the 50s. I then had to brake behind a tractor pulling into a farm gate, and as I took off again I noticed the range had gone back up to 60. This is because charging occurs with braking, as it does also going down hills.

Travelling at about 98 to 100 kilometres per hour all the way, I noticed by the time I got to the Racecourse Road turn-off from State Highway 77, there was 37 kilometres left. Yes, it seemed I would make it.

But the relief was short-lived. Just when I thought all was going well and I would get to Ashburton without having to call on the nice people at Gluyas’s to come and rescue me, I ran into a shovel. Yes, a shovel.

It must have fallen off someone’s ute, and was positioned straight along the road in such a manner as to have the handle and orange colour hidden from view. It looked like a brown lump of dirt, or a dead possum. Going over the top there was a crunching and banging noise, which continued as I pulled off the road.

Getting out I noticed the offending implement stuck out into the road a few metres behind me, and following vehicles doing well to swerve and avoid it.

I removed it off the road and experienced relief once again as the car started just fine. I carried on my way, driving straight to the charging point at the West Street carpark.

By this time the kilometre range was still 37 kilometres, seemingly having benefited from braking at the Moore Street lights and also what appears to be a relatively substantial decline on the way into Ashburton.

At the EV point, I couldn’t work out which of the two charging guns were supposed to be for the demo vehicle, so phoned Nissan sales manager Scott Donaldson, who was able to explain what to do.

I answered in the affirmative to his questions about whether the car was going well, etcetera, before the inevitable “by the way” where I let him know about the shovel. He eased my anxieties substantially, being mainly relieved I was fine and also believing the car would be fine.

The next main obstacle to face regarding the demonstration electric vehicle, was being able to nip out of work in an hour’s time to move the car from its EV station area after charging, and then to find an all-day spot in the West Street carpark.

Generally these are all full by 9.30am, however, luckily there was just one remaining at the southern end, and I didn’t have to drive off to the outskirts of the CBD. So all in all, shovel incident aside, the electric car seems to be going well, and to me the benefits are so far outweighing the disadvantages.

Free speech – don’t meddle with it

W

hat a big over-reaction it was yesterday for the Vice-Chancellor of Massey University to ban former National Party leader Don Brash from speaking to the uni’s student politics club on campus.

The club had invited him two and a half months ago to speak about his experience as National leader, as part of a wider discussion about current leader Simon Bridges and potential future leader Chris Bishop.

Vice-Chancellor Jan Thomas said the students had booked a venue but the uni had cancelled the booking due to security concerns after becoming aware of social media posts suggesting the event could lead to violence.

Those posts, and I paraphrase,

said Brash was anti-Maori and a white supremacist.

Thomas said she wasn’t against free speech on campus but Brash’s leadership of Hobson’s Pledge (remember one law for all) and his views on Maori wards on council came dangerously close to hate speech.

And don’t forget, she said, that Brash also “supported” far-right visitors Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux.

Brash says his support of Southern and Molyneux was merely for their right to speak, not an endorsement of their views.

He said Thomas’ position to cancel the students’ booking for his visit was a disgraceful contradiction of publicly-funded universities role in hosting robust debate and the free exchange of ideas.

I’m not a fan of the man, but I’m inclined to agree. Thomas has taken away the chance for those students to listen, debate the man and his politics, and make up their own minds.

Thomas wasn’t sure whether Brash would even be repeating those views in the context of the night, but she shut it down

anyway out of concern for the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.

Free speech is hugely important in this country and people need to talk about issues and problems they see in their communities and wider society.

If you don’t want to take part in those discussions, then don’t, but don’t stop others.

Yes, some views are repulsive.

But you don’t have to subscribe to them.

ACT’s David Seymour jumped on the wagon quickly by calling for the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation.

He said the uni had bowed down to thuggish behaviour and feared “American-style, antiintellectual, violent intolerance

would come here”.

Jacinda Ardern too thinks the Vice-Chancellor over-reacted and many others said that while they disagree with Brash and his views, he should be allowed to express them.

Universities have long been places where even the most controversial issues are discussed.

Students are allowed to ponder if Mother Teresa was on acid when she was shown a vision by God. But the free exchange of ideas and robust debate is not confined to universities.

It is alive in workplaces, at family gatherings and around the dinner table (for those who still eat there).

We are not living in Gilead, praise be.

ur district has a knack of producing people that excel at the highest level.

People like former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley; New Zealand cyclist, coach and Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston; and international operatic sensation Simon O’Neill.

The next generation of Ashburton superstars are starting to make their mark. I’d like to highlight two such young people achieving at the highest level in their chosen fields.

Tyler Stuthridge, regional manager at SealesWinslow, was recently awarded a Great Leader Award at Ballance’s Great People Awards.

This award is open to all individuals across Ballance’s nationwide agri-service providers, who motivate and inspire others to unleash their potential.

The judges said that Tyler showed exceptional leadership in the face of extreme challenges.

In December last year, the SealesWinslow mill was ravaged by fire – one of the largest fires in the Ashburton District in recent years – and suffered extensive damage as a result.

While the plant has only recently reopened, Tyler’s hard work and determination meant

that he had normal services up and running within a matter of weeks.

He made sure no customers missed out on an order.

What particularly impressed the judges was the way Tyler was able to bring his team together through this tough time.

He worked hard to provide support and reassurance, maintained a positive outlook throughout, and led his team with genuine empathy and compassion.

The judges commented that Tyler had seen more in the past 12 months than most leaders would see in their entire careers.

That’s quite a feat for someone so young and something that will hold him in great stead for the future.

I have been lucky enough to meet Tyler and see him in his element and I couldn’t agree more with the judges’ comments. I look forward to seeing what else

Tyler goes on to achieve.

Matthew Clough is another young man doing our region proud. Last month, the 17-yearold competed in the ITU World Multisport Championships in Denmark and took home two silver medals – one in the under-19 aquathlon and the other in the 18-19 age group cross triathlon.

These are incredibly tough events and to beat out older and more experienced athletes is a testament to Matthew’s passion and dedication. He was only a few seconds off winning the gold in the aquathlon – a one kilometre open water swim followed by a five kilometre run – even fighting through the pain of multiple jellyfish stings.

His silver medal in the cross triathlon, consisting of a one kilometre open water swim, a 28 kilometre mountain bike and a 10 kilometre run, came in the first year he has been eligible to compete in the event.

With Denmark done and dusted, Matthew will return home for a short break before heading to Maui in October, where he will compete at the World Xterra Championships.

The whole district will be right behind Matthew as he looks to continue his great run of form.

The council is passionate about inspiring young people in the district. It works closely with the Ashburton Youth Council (AYC) and nurtures its members to become well-rounded leaders in the community. With members aged between 16 and 24 years old, AYC serves as link between young people and the Council, and initiates events such as the popular Bite Nite.

Applications for next year’s AYC will open soon, so keep an eye out!

Ashburton District Council partners with Trustpower every year to host the Trustpower Community Awards, which recognises people, groups and organisations that voluntarily dedicate their time to making our community a better place.

The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award is open to all 17 and 18 year-old people who are making a difference in their community.

US moves condemned Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has hit out at the United States over its reinstatement of economic sanctions.

He described the measures, which came into effect overnight, as “psychological warfare” which aimed to “sow division among Iranians”.

The sanctions take aim at various sectors, with further punitive action planned against Iran’s oil trade.

The European Union has spoken out against the measures, vowing to protect firms doing “legitimate business”.

It follows the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, earlier this year.

The deal, negotiated during the presidency of Barack Obama, saw Iran limit its controversial nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

Trump says the deal is “onesided” and he believes renewed economic pressure will force Iran to agree to a new deal and end its “malign” activities.

The imposing of sanctions follows Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 deal earlier this year.

Trump had long spoken out against the agreement, labelling it “disastrous” and the “worst deal I’ve ever seen”.

The 35-year-old actress starred as Nakia in the popular Marvel movie, and has revealed that following a “passionate” response from fans after the release of the feature, she scheduled a 10-day silent retreat at the Vipassana meditation centre in New Zealand in order to escape from the mayhem.

“We are always in favour of diplomacy and talks ... but talks need honesty,” He also accused the Trump administration of using Iran as domestic political leverage ahead of November’s midterm elections in the United States.

California wildfire ‘largest in history’ Wildfires tearing through trees and brush, rampaging up hillsides and incinerating neighbourhoods: The place-names change but the devastation is showing signs of becoming the new normal in California.

Yesterday, twin fires being treated as one incident north of San Francisco became the largest wildfire in state history, destroying 1148 square kilometres) – nearly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Mendocino Complex was still growing as it broke the record set last December.

It has been less destructive to property than some of the other wildfires in the state because it is mostly raging in remote areas. But officials say it threatens 11,300 buildings and some new evacuations were ordered as the flames spread.

Hotter weather attributed to climate change is drying out vegetation, creating more intense fires that spread quickly from rural areas to city subdivisions, climate and fire experts say.

But they also blame cities and towns that are expanding

More than 14,000 firefighters are battling more than a dozen major blazes throughout California, state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean said.

“I can remember a couple of years ago when we saw 10

to 12,000 firefighters in the states of California, Oregon and Washington and never the 14,000 we see now,” he said.

Campgrounds and homes in Holy Jim Canyon were ordered evacuated. The fire sent up an enormous pillar of smoke and ash.

Further north, crews gained ground against a deadly blaze that has destroyed more than 1000 homes in and around Redding. It was nearly halfway contained, Cal Fire said.

The wildfire, about 360 kilometres north of San Francisco, started more than two weeks ago by sparks from the steel wheel of a towed-trailer’s flat tyre. It killed two firefighters and four residents and displaced more than 38,000 people.

Officials began allowing some residents to return to their neighbourhoods. But tens of thousands of others were still evacuated.

Pink hospitalised Pop superstar Pink remained in hospital yesterday with a stomach virus, forcing her to postpone a third Sydney show, her promoter said. The singer’s Beautiful Trauma world tour’s first concert in Sydney was scheduled for last Friday, but she cancelled that show on doctor’s orders. The 38-year-old battled through a Saturday night show. Promoter Live Nation tweeted that Pink was admitted to a hospital on Sunday suffering from dehydration and was discharged. But she was readmitted and diagnosed with a gastric virus hours before her Monday concert.

Redford retiring Academy Award winning actor Robert Redford has announced his retirement after a career spanning almost six decades with more than 41 appearances in films and 10 directing credits. The Hollywood megastar, 81, will end his iconic 56-year film career with his final movie, The Old Man & The Gun, and said he is glad to go out on an “upbeat and positive” note. Speaking on Monday about his future, the twice married father-of-four said: “Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and (I’ll) move towards retirement after this because I’ve been doing it since I was 21.”

KiwiBuild questioned Twyford, Infrastructure Minister Shane Jones and Building and Construction Minister Jenny Salesa spoke yesterday after a meeting with construction industry representatives, with Salesa saying Government agencies would be reminded of procurement guidelines on projects to ensure they set a good example.

A spokesperson at Twyford’s office said issues in the construction sector were predominantly in the “vertical” or high-rise space, not the lower-rise residential sector.

However, KiwiBuild is mainly a suburban residential plan.

Stephen Barclay, KiwiBuild chief executive, is due soon to appoint 10 private developers to build some of the first 1000 homes, mainly apartments, and some of these could be on previously stalled sites.

Bayly believes such a big national housing programme could exacerbate existing construction issues, putting more pressure on the already stretched sector.

Former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley will step down as Genesis Energy chair after this year’s annual meeting in October, and be succeeded by ex-ASB Bank chief executive Barbara Chapman.

Shipley, who is among former Mainzeal directors facing a civil suit from unpaid creditors of the failed construction firm, will end a nineyear spell as chair of the electricity generator-retailer.

because at its worst, gossip can be bullying or sexual harassment,” she said.

“If gossipers breach a policy then employers can rightfully discipline them or possibly even terminate their employment, particularly if it’s repeated behaviour that risks the health and safety of co-workers.”

Bryant-Smith said while you shouldn’t be forced to be friends with everyone you work with, conduct that affected morale, disrupted productivity or socially isolated a particular team member was “quite serious”.

So how should you handle the notorious office gossiper?

Bryant-Smith said it was important to either refuse to engage with them – or call out their bad behaviour.

“Combat it directly and say, ‘I don’t find that sort of talk constructive, it makes me feel uncomfortable,’ or you could say ‘I really like Sarah, I don’t agree with what you’re saying’,” she said.

“In open-plan offices where

noise levels are an issue and it’s harder to step away when someone is gossiping all day, say, ‘Look, I’ve got a deadline coming up, I’m popping my headphones on,’ and that’s a pretty good way of indicating you need to focus without being too confronting.”

Bryant-Smith said workers also needed to be wary of what they post on social media.

“We often see employees get into hot water because they think comments they make on social media are either off the record or private, but the reality is Facebook posts are online 24/7 and if you’re connected with a colleague … people can literally take screenshots of your post and attach it to a formal complaint,” she said.

“Some employees don’t appreciate how much risk they’re taking.

“Unless none of your colleagues are your friend on Facebook, which is incredibly rare, it’s best to be careful because the lines between personal and professional on social media are blurry.”

The workplace rule most broken If you’ve ever worked in an office before, you’ve probably been guilty of indulging in a little gossip at some point.

Whether it’s speculating about Sharon from account’s love life or the boss’ questionable fashion choices, most of us have swapped stories behind a co-worker’s back on occasion.

But according to workplace expert Rose Bryant-Smith, that common habit could end up seriously affecting your career.

Bryant-Smith, co-founder of workplace investigations firm Worklogic and co-author of Fix Your Team, said it was human nature to gossip and speculate at times of stress, such as when redundancies were on the table, or when boredom sets in.

But she said gossip becomes a problem when the speculation is negative in nature and when it is intended to “drag people down” and damage someone’s reputation.

“Bosses hate undermining gossip because it really damages team relationships,” she said.

“Bosses need people to work together constructively, and we know if someone speculates about your personal life – about your marriage, your illness, about how you got a promotion – that sort of gossip really hurts.

“You’re less likely to trust and work constructively with that person and the damage to teams can be significant.”

Bryant-Smith said many workers didn’t realise gossip could land them in hot water at work.

“People who engage in gossip need to be very careful they’re not breaching any values or standards of conduct the employer has set

National’s Building and Construction spokesman says the Government’s KiwiBuild plan could be threatened by construction sector issues but a minister has said those issues are dogging high-rise or commercial building rather than residential construction.

Andrew Bayly, who is also National’s associate finance spokesman, said he had concerns about KiwiBuild’s chances and Housing Minister Phil Twyford’s expectations after construction sector issues including Ebert Construction’s receivership last week, with estimated debts of around $40 million.

“I hope Mr Twyford actually achieves what he’s going to do with his 100,000 [new home] target because I think that’s good for New Zealand but my view is he’s going to really struggle to achieve that because I doubt he’s put in place the building blocks to make sure you can get to the stage where you are building an additional 10,000 houses a year,” Bayly said.

■ Heat a large saucepan and brown beef in batches. Set aside.

■ Add chopped onion to the pan and cook for 5 minutes until soft.

■ Return the beef to the pan along with the curry paste and cook for 2 minutes.

■ Heat oil and butter over gentle heat.

■ Add onions and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes.

■ Stir in cornflour and curry powder and cook for 1 minute.

■ Heat the oil in a large saucepan or flame-proof casserole dish.

■ Add the spring onions and coriander stalks and cook for 1 min.

■ Add the pork slices and cook for 5 mins until starting to brown.

■ Stir in the curry paste and peanut butter.

■ After 30 secs, add the sugar, soy and coconut milk, plus 1/2 can of water.

■ Mix well, put a lid on and leave to simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

■ Remove the lid, add the baby corn and increase the heat.

■ Bubble for 3 minutes until the corn is cooked and the sauce has thickened a little.

■ Stir in the lime juice and check the seasoning.

■ Serve scattered with the coriander leaves and rice.

Oil for frying 2 aubergines, cut into large chunks 2 onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 5cm ginger, finely grated 1t cumin seeds 1t ground coriander 1t turmeric 1/2 t chilli powder 400ml coconut milk 1T tamarind paste 1T peanut butter Coriander Rice, to serve

■ Heat 1T oil in a pan.

■ Cook the aubergine in batches

until golden and soft.

■ Add more oil as needed.

■ Add the onion to the same pan and cook until soft and golden.

■ Add the garlic and ginger and cook for a minute.

■ Add the spices and cook for 2 minutes.

■ Tip in the coconut milk, tamarind and peanut butter.

■ Simmer gently until the peanut butter dissolves ■ Add the aubergine back and simmer for 15 minutes.

■ Stir through some coriander and serve with bread or rice.

Pork and peanut curry 1T vegetable oil Bunch spring onions, sliced Small bunch coriander, stalks finely chopped, leaves picked 400g pork tenderloin, sliced 4T Thai red curry paste 4T peanut butter 1T soft brown sugar 1T soy sauce

2T olive oil 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped Black pepper, to taste 1T ground cumin 1T curry powder 1T chilli powder 1 vegetable stock cube 2C water 1T soy sauce 220g basmati rice

■ Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over low heat and gently fry the garlic.

■ When it becomes aromatic, slowly stir in pepper, cumin, curry powder and chilli powder.

■ When spices begin to fry and become fragrant, stir in the stock cube and a little water.

■ Increase heat to high and add the remaining water and soy sauce.

■ Just before the mixture comes to a boil, stir in rice.

■ Bring to a rolling boil then reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, or until all liquid is absorbed.

■ Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Potato, leek and oyster soup

Serves 4 50g butter 2 leeks (white part only), cleaned and thinly sliced 250g potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1L chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 pacific oysters, freshly shucked 80ml cream ■ Place a large saucepan on a low heat and add butter. When melted, add leeks and potatoes and gently sweat together for 3-5 minutes to sweeten the leeks.

Warm fuzzies flood the field W

hether you’re supporting your team or just there as an interested spectator, it’s hard not to get pulled into the drama and the atmosphere of a Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup final.

Saturday’s final between Celtic and Southern was no different.

If anything, it actually stepped it up a notch.

Celtic won it 28-24, to claim their first title since having to share it with Southern after the 2006 final ended in a draw, and it had been a long 18 years since they’d won it outright. They hadn’t even made a final since 2012.

It was a massive deal for Celtic supporters so they went all out, and a big part of that was getting the Celtic seniors of the future involved and making them feel like a real part of it all, which was amazing.

Children from St Joseph’s School produced thoughtfully drawn portraits of each and every member of Celtic’s senior squad, led by Cathy Reid, which brought a smile to many a face when they were posted to the club’s Face-

book page on Friday night.

Then, on Saturday, when the final whistle sounded, a sea of kids dressed top to toe in green swarmed onto the field from the corner of the park where they’d been singing and chanting away for much of the game, to mob their team. Again, word on the street was that Reid was the person to thank for that.

It was quite a sight, those little people running out onto the field and making a beeline for their team, and I believe the players were suitably stunned by the massive outpouring of support.

It was something I don’t remember having seen before in the many Watters Cup finals I’d attended in my time, and it really did give you a touch of the warm fuzzies.

Many of those same kids had earlier lined up to form a guard of honour to welcome their team onto the field, before setting up camp in a western corner of the field, ready to cheer on their team.

And cheer they certainly did, still in full voice as the final minutes ticked away.

But it wasn’t just the excite-

ment on the younger faces that made you realise how special a win it had been.

As the cup was being presented to Danny Hurley, the winning captain, seeing the number of phones out taking photos and videos, and spotting faces like Dave McCrea’s in the crowd with a huge smile plastered on it, you realised just how much it meant to the club.

I couldn’t help but wonder, if that was what it was like when Celtic made their first final since 2012, imagine what it would be like if, or when, the day came that Hampstead made a final again.

Hampstead hasn’t even won a Watters Cup game in nine long years, let alone making a grand final, but this year they came agonisingly close to toppling

both Rakaia and Methven.

When a competition was dominated by one team year after year, it could get a little bit tiresome (except if that team was the Crusaders, the All Blacks or my beloved Warriors, of course).

Seeing Celtic lifting the cup for the first time in so long, at the end of a competition where Hampstead also showed that they were back to being contenders, meant the 2018 Watters Cup competition was a win in my eyes. It had a bit of everything, flair, upsets and plenty of drama.

And just to add a little to that drama and possibly throw the cat among the pigeons a little, I was standing down my usual end of the field on Saturday – which happened to be just along from the bulk of the Celtic supporters – when Celtic crossed for the first try of the game.

Had that try been scored in front of Southern supporters, who had the same view as me and many a Celtic fan, I feel the reaction may have been a little different because I’m not entirely convinced it was in fact a try.

George Bennett insists his Tour de France aspirations remain undiminished despite the emergence of a world-class rider on his team.

Bennett skipped the 2018 Tour to contest the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, and his LottoNL-Jumbo team shone despite his absence, with Primoz Roglic finishing fourth and Steven Kruijswijk fifth.

Roglic’s performance was the most notable, with the Slovenian winning a stage as he confirmed his status as one of the world’s best stage riders.

So how does that impact the leadership ambitions of Bennett?

According to the 28-year-old climber, 12th when leading the team at last year’s Tour before he withdrew due to illness, there shouldn’t be any issues.

“I’ve raced a lot with Primoz and Stevie and we often share leaderships – it’s a good relationship the three of us have between each other.

“You see other teams have the double-pronged approach or even three guys, and if it’s done right, it can be a real strength and provide more opportunities for me next year in terms of the Tour,” he told Radio Sport.

Bennett admits the success of his team “definitely made [the Tour] harder to miss” but believes team-mates contending for the title can benefit his personal goals as well.

“We’re a team which really gets on well and it can only be an advantage if we play off each other. You can send one guy up the road and if he’s a genuine threat, it sends other teams on to the back foot.

“If managed properly and if we’re all civil adults about it, I think there’s no trouble. In Tirreno [Adriatico], I was racing with Primoz and we shared leadership, and the same with me and Stevie in Catalunya, and it all worked out great.”

Bennett is likely to be team leader at the final Grand Tour of the year, the Vuelta, which starts on August 25.

Day seeks PGA focus

By Evin PriEst Jason Day believes his highprofile US PGA Championship grouping with Phil Mickelson can boost his quest for a second major title title this week.

Former world No.1 Day is well used to marquee pairings and the enormous crowds the game’s biggest drawcards attract.

Last week played his way into weekend contention at the WGCBridgestone while alongside Tiger Woods in the opening rounds before fading to tie for 10th on Sunday.

This week Day, the 2015 US PGA Championship winner, will be beside five-times major champion Mickelson and 2011 PGA champion Keegan Bradley at Missouri’s Bellerive Country Club.

During his title defence in 2016, Day was paired with Mickelson for the first two days at Baltusrol and eventually finished runnerup to Jimmy Walker by one shot.

The Queenslander hopes it can help him go one better this time.

“I’m looking forward to playing with Phil,” Day told AAP. “I remember playing with him at Baltusrol (in 2016); he always brings a big crowd.

“But when you have a big crowd, it forces you to focus in a lot more, so I’m happy about that.”

Adam Scott has also been assigned a marquee group, joining fellow two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson and world No.1 Dustin Johnson.

Former world No.1 Scott hopes playing 36 holes with two of the best drivers of the golf ball – who each have three US Tour titles this year – rubs off on him after a poor display from the tee at the WGCBridgestone.

“I need to hit fairways; I had 20-footers for par for more of last week than I’d like because I was constantly playing out of the rough,” Scott said.

“I was hoping for a better result at Firestone because my game was looking good at the Open.

“I’ve got a big stretch of golf coming up, starting at the PGA. “But I’m putting good, so I just need to get the ball in play and then I’ll be fine.”

Fellow Queenslander Cameron Smith will play alongside Peter Uihlein and Ryan Armour, while Marc Leishman will join Tommy Fleetwood and Japan’s Satoshi Kodaira.

Australian Craig Hocknull, a US-based club pro who was one of 20 to qualify through the PGA Professionals Championship, will play with Austin Cook and Alexander Bjork.

Bracing for new rivalry

By Janie Mccauley Stephen Curry can only imagine the intensity level of the LakersWarriors rivalry now that LeBron James has landed in Los Angeles.

After four straight NBA finals against James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, two-time defending champions Golden State will get four matchups against James during the regular season.

“And a whole new-look Laker team with some of the young kids.

“It should be fun, the Bay Area and LA and the whole thing,” Curry told The Associated Press.

“When I first got into the league Oracle would be buzzing any time the Lakers came in. There probably will be a revolution of Laker fans that are going to try to creep in but I hope Bay Area and Dub Nation we keep control of that competition because we’re on top right now.”

The schedule is set to be released later this week.

Curry, who has won a second straight NBA title and a third in four years, is well placed again this year.

Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final and their impressive three wins over Manchester City in the last campaign have raised hopes on Merseyside that they could be the closest challengers to Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

Brumbies sign Pulu The Brumbies have signed Chiefs speedster Toni Pulu in an impressive signing for the Super Rugby club. The winger scored 14 tries in 32 appearances for the Waikatobased Chiefs after making his debut in 2016. Former Chiefs coach Dave Rennie was blown away by Pulu after he burst onto the scene two years ago, calling him the fastest man in rugby. Brumbies coach Dan McKellar is thrilled to bring the 28-year-old to Canberra for the 2019 season.

The annual rep match saw 24 players from each association competing, made up into two men’s teams, two women’s teams and two mixed teams playing in fours, pairs and singles. Among those turning out for Ashburton was William Wilson, playing in his first representative fixture for Ashburton, and it was a good day for Wilson and his teammates. Ashburton took it out, beating Canterbury 91 to 77.

Fifita the unlucky AB It was in the midst of the All Blacks worst collective performance last year that we saw the best individual game of 2017.

Vaea Fifita, on debut against Argentina in New Plymouth, produced an unforgettably good 80 minutes that included a try that few of the best wings in world rugby could have matched.

There was phenomenal muscularity and agility on show and it vindicated the unusually bold pre-match expectation of All Blacks coach Steve Hansen who said that he felt Fifita was the best natural athlete with whom he’d ever worked.

Hansen even went as far to say that he saw Fifita in the same physical mould as the likes of Jerome Kaino and Jerry Collins.

“So I want to see a real physical beast that we know he can be,” said Hansen.

Vaea Fifita “But we also want to see him do his core roles, you know, dominate in the tackle, dominate when he carries, use his ball skills in the contact area as well.

“So we’re expecting a lot from him because we believe he’s got a lot in him.

“We’re going to aim high for him and he needs to aim high as well and – if we aim high – I think he’ll hit the target.”

A year on and Fifita has been dropped by the All Blacks.

He has fallen a long way in a short space of time.

One in three of the world’s 800 million rugby union followers are Indian, Chinese, American or Brazilian, according to World Rugby’s largest fan surveys released yesterday.

There are 33 million fans in the US, with national team the Eagles having won two Olympic gold medals and qualified for all but one Rugby World Cup, but China has the same number of fans even though their world No.66 ranked national team are yet to play in a major tournament.

Speight off to Ulster Brumbies winger Henry Speight will join Irish province Ulster Rugby on a short-term loan contract.

Speight will move to Kingspan Stadium later this month in a similar deal to that which saw fellow Brumbies player Christian Lealiifano arrive in Belfast last season. He will return to Australia on December 31, in advance of the 2019 Super Rugby season. The opportunity to play in the Pro14 and emulate Lealiifano played a large part in Speight deciding to head north for the loan spell. - AAP

Attitude all-important Former All Blacks and Crusaders hooker Corey Flynn believed the right attitude was behind the Crusaders’ success on Saturday night and suggested certain teams were let down by players who were driven solely by the money.

With a resilient performance that successfully defended the Lions’ rolling mauls, the Crusaders demanded attention in the second-half as they hurt the South African side both physically and mentally to defend the title. When asked about the Crusaders’ standout season and impressive final, Flynn said he believed it was his former side’s attitude that made all the difference. “At the end of the day it just comes down to attitude and if you want them to not cross the line then you’ll stop them.”

Flying under the radar Jamie Phillips is happy to have all the attention shy away from his charge Zedeedudadeeko going into the Grand National Hurdles (4200m) at Riccarton today.

“He’s flying under the radar and I don’t mind,” said the Tauherenikau trainer who bred and races Zedeedudadeeko with the McInteer Family Trust.

Punters have been climbing aboard the Waikato visitor Laekeeper for the Hospitality New Zealand-sponsored 4200m feature since his fine win last Saturday in the Sydenham Hurdles (3100m).

Indeed, it was a solid performance by Simon Rees’ seven-

year-old Laekeeper, who is in line to become the 20th horse to win the Sydenham – Grand National Hurdles double.

But Zedeedudadeeko will be chasing an even bigger achievement.

The 10-year-old will be trying to complete the big three – the Great Northern Hurdles, Wellington Hurdles and Grand National Hurdles.

Zedeedudadeeko raced away to a 10 and a half-length win in last year’s Great Northern Hurdles (4190m) at Ellerslie and added the Wellington Hurdles (3400m) to his career tally of seven wins when scoring decisively

at Trentham last month.

“It would be great to get all three,” said Phillips, who just has the one horse in work and is employed as the racecourse manager at Tauherenikau.

“Once I found out the Northern was going to be at Te Rapa this year and not Ellerslie I dismissed that. It would be a waste of time running him in it at Te Rapa because the circuit is not as testing as Ellerslie.

“That’s when I decided to have a go at the Grand National and try and complete the big three.”

Should Zedeedudadeeko succeed today he will easily eclipse the other memorable day Phil-

lips had at Riccarton as a jumps jockey.

“I rode one winner at Riccarton,” Phillips said. “I didn’t win any big ones as a jockey, just a lot of the smaller stuff.”

Phillips rode 18 winners in the mid-1980s and Zedeedudadeeko has credited him with his two most important wins since he notched the first of his 42 training successes 27 seasons ago.

Phillips will combine with the country’s leading jumps jockey Isaac Lupton today with Lupton picking up the ride on Zedeedudadeeko through the suspension of the horse’s regular rider Charlie Studd.

Farr camp confident Emily Farr has a black-type win on the flat to her record and she is confident she can add an important jumps race to her CV today. The Cambridge-based jumps jockey is the regular rider of Laekeeper, favourite for the Hospitality NZ Canterbury Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton. Farr won the Feilding Gold Cup on Pump Up The Volume, but it’s riding over fences that 27-year-old Farr loves best. - NZME

Cooksley’s call Shelley Hale will leave it to Grant Cooksley to make the call on which of her stable representatives he will ride in the Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa on Saturday week.

Hale plans to tackle the weightfor-age event with Close Up and his brother Seventh Up. Cooksley has been the regular rider of both horses and was runner-up on Close Up in last year’s Foxbridge. - NZME

■ RUGBY LEAGUE

Playoffs oh-so-close

By Chris rattue They are not quite there yet, but the Warriors are oh so close to making the NRL playoffs for the first time in seven seasons.

Hallelujah.

With four games remaining, the points are: Rabbitohs 32, Storm 30, Roosters 30, Dragons 28, Panthers 28, Sharks 26, Broncos 26, Warriors 26...Tigers 22.

The initial playoff games are: 1 v 4, 2 v 3 (losers get second chance); 5 v 8, 4 v 5 (sudden death).

A win at home over the Knights and a Tigers defeat to the Raiders this weekend will just about seal the deal.

A return to the playoffs will be a great moment for the club and a feather in the cap for coach Steve Kearney, but they will not want to stop there.

So who do the Warriors match up against best among the current top seven?

1) Dragons Who would have thought it?

The Warriors have rolled up their sleeves twice against the Dragons this season, and recorded victories over the team which has such a great record against them.

An inconsistent attitude is the Auckland side’s Achilles heel but Steve Kearney’s men know that at their desperate best, they have the Dragons’ measure.

2) Broncos The Broncos have had backroom issues amid constant speculation over coach Wayne Bennett’s future.

I would fancy the Warriors against the Broncos.

The Warriors’ worst performances are against teams with aggressive, powerful middle forwards.

The Broncos aren’t all that scary in this area although Josh McGuire is a mean hombre.

The Broncos playmakers have not consistently driven their team well this year but the expected return of Darius Boyd to fullback, after a stint at centre, will make them a tougher proposition.

3) Roosters

Lillyman calls it quits Veteran prop Jacob Lillyman will hang up his boots at Newcastle at the end of the NRL season. The 34-year-old has played 265 NRL games for the Cowboys, Warriors and Knights and 14 State of Origin matches for Queensland. The longserving front rower announced his retirement yesterday after just one season for the Knights, calling time on a 15-year career. “The mind and body reach a point where going another year isn’t an option and it’s been a bit of a battle this year,” Lillyman said.

Panthers eye top coaches Ivan Cleary and Wayne Bennett are Penrith’s top targets to take over from sacked coach Anthony Griffin.

NRL.com reported that the Tigers had offered Cleary a four-year deal in an attempt to prise him away from the Wests Tigers. It’s understood Panthers officials have spoken to Tigers mentor Cleary – the father of Penrith halfback Nathan – in the past few weeks.

The Panthers are also interested in veteran super-coach Bennett, believing he is a man who could deliver their talented squad an NRL title.

Burgess’ cut errors

The Roosters are on a good roll as the club absorbs the Cooper Cronk Method.

The obsessive former Melbourne Storm playmaker is not one who leaves anything to chance, which has taken the Roosters time to get used to.

But despite the form book, the Warriors might fancy this game.

They have a good record against the glamour Sydney side in recent years.

4) Sharks The Cronulla forwards are packed with tough veterans led

by Paul Gallen who never take a backward step – this is not a good match up for the Warriors in a cut-throat game.

A playoff clash would have a close win to the Sharks written all over it.

5) Panthers Call it a hunch, but the Panthers DNA will be too much for a Warriors team which can go MIA, as in missing in action.

The athletic Panthers stay in

the contest, and have done so in recent weeks despite tensions in the camp.

This combative quality has much to do with James Maloney, the five-eighth with match-turning instincts who inspires success wherever he goes despite barbs about his defence.

The Panthers’ unprecedented late-season sacking of coach Anthony Griffin makes them even more dangerous – teams often initially respond well to a fresh environment.

6) Storm If Storm ringmaster Cameron Smith is fit, these Warriors aren’t good enough to win a finals clash against the game’s standard setters.

With Smith pulling the strings, middle forwards Jesse Bromwich, Nelson Asofa-Solomona and co. are too fit and strong and would set the winning platform for a team which demands and often obtains perfection.

The Warriors have had some

success against highly structured Storm teams in the past.

But thanks to Cameron Munster’s growing influence, the champions now play with more flair.

But if Smith remains sidelined with a leg injury, the Warriors would have a 20 per cent chance on one of their good days.

7) Rabbitohs A first-round victory over the Rabbitohs in Perth kicked the season into life for the Warriors, but Souths are a very different proposition now.

No one will forget the way Souths humiliated the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium, and least of all Souths.

The Burgess boys are causing havoc right now – the Warriors couldn’t handle them.

Any meeting with Souths would mean it is all-over-rover for the Warriors, whose middle defence would be dog tucker against mighty Sam Burgess and co.

Tom and George Burgess have not only revitalised their NRL careers but have turned around their reputations as error-prone liabilities. The Burgess twins have rightly earned plenty of plaudits during South Sydney’s stellar NRL season, with the likes of Damien Cook running amok on the back of the platform they have laid.

While most sides have struggled to contain the Burgess power game the brothers have made equally big gains in eliminating cheap penalties and dropped balls.

Thaiday’s 300th game At first they didn’t want him, then he knocked them back and now Sam Thaiday will return to celebrate his 300th NRL game.

The Brisbane favourite will become just the 33rd player to reach the milestone when he lines up against North Queensland on Thursday.

A young Thaiday used to sell magazines outside the Townsville stadium to earn his ticket to watch the Cowboys and remembers sitting on the hill watching their first game with his dad and brother.

Now Thaiday, 33, will retire as one of just three men to play more than 300 games for the Broncos. - AAP

Munro’s great-nephew in record attempt The great nephew of legendary New Zealand land-speed racer Burt Munro will attempt to break the magical 200mph barrier at the Utah Salt Flats this month.

Backed by a crack engineering team from America’s first motorcycle company, Indian Motorcycle, Lee Munro is hoping to eclipse his own previous official speed of 191.286mph (307.844km/h) on a newly-modified Indian Scout, dubbed Spirit of Munro.

In 2005, Burt Munro’s legacy was immortalised with the making of the popular film, The World’s Fastest Indian, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins.

He inspired his great nephew to follow in his speedy footsteps, and last year, Lee Munro celebrated the 50th anniversary of his great uncle’s historic under-1000cc world record on his 1920 Scout Streamliner with a commemorative run at Bonneville Speed Week.

Lee Munro’s record-breaking run of 186.681mph (300.433km/h) at El Mirage, Southern California, and official run of 191.286mph (307.844km/h) at last year’s Speed Week has him motivated to break into the exclusive 200mph club at the 70th annual Bonneville Speed Week later this month.

“My great uncle Burt is a signifi-

cant inspiration for my own motorcycle racing career, and his appetite for speed is clearly a part of my DNA,” said Christchurch-based Lee Munro.

“Partnered with the exceptional team at Indian Motorcycle, I know we can make our dreams of hitting 200mph a reality.”

Speed Week will be held between August 11-17 at Bonneville, Utah.

In preparation for this year, Indian Motorcycle’s engineering team has worked on refining the Indian Scout Streamliner which will run in the MPSG (Modified Partial Streamliner) 1350cc class.

The workshops consist of jewellery making (CanBead) and fly fishing (CanTackle) and provide a distraction, a sense of purpose and of accomplishment in a supportive and caring environment. The Trust employs workshop tutors and also relies heavily on a large number of dedicated volunteers. Our National Coordinator is moving on and we are looking to replace her to oversee the day to day work of the Trust, its Tutors and Volunteers.

This role is multi-faceted and will involve administrative duties through to oversight of our work Nationally.

This position is for 16 hours per week and will be based at Community House Mid Canterbury. Some travel may be required.

Perfect conditions met competitors taking part in the Snow Sports NZ Slopestyle Series event at Mt Hutt Ski Area on Sunday.

More than 40 skiers and snowboarders from across the South Island and beyond made the most of the conditions as they tested their freestyle skills on a range of jumps, boxes and rails, with a big group of spectators enjoying the

show on the mountain.

Both open and under-14 categories were contested and the open division was run in Mt Hutt’s Gunners Alley park, a unique Sshaped course with three large jumps from 9 metres to 15 metres, a large hip and four advanced rail features.

The under-14 division was run on the Inside Leg park on in-

termediate features including jumps, rail and boxes.

All competitors were given two runs to showcase their skills and impress the judges.

The women’s open ski was won

by Laura Wotton with Samantha Johnston second, and the men’s open ski was won by Tom Fisher with Elliot Robertson second.

Cool Wakushima won the wom-

en’s open board section ahead of Elyse Genet, while Ben Comber won the men’s open board section ahead of Norton Moi. For the under-14s Mari Fukada won the board section for the girls and Rocco Jamieson won for the boys, while for the skiers Olivia Hein was first for the girls and Ferguson McArthur was first for the boys.

Fletcher McArthur was second in that grade.

The Snow Sports NZ Slopestyle series allowed competitors to receive points on a competition circuit over the season, build the foundation for skill development, gain competition experience and breed the next generation of world-class Kiwi skiers and snowboarders.
