Two Mid Canterbury firefighters are among a contingent of about 80 who have been deployed to Canada to fight severe wildfires. They are Alford Forest deputy fire force controller and Staveley dairy farmer Nathan Currie, and Ashburton dad-of-four Kevin Donaldson, who works as senior station officer at the Timaru fire station. The two were among six from the Mid South Canterbury area who quickly packed their firefighting boots, overalls, gloves and goggles and boarded a plane on Sunday. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Mid South Canterbury deputy principal rural fire officer Don Geddes
said there would be a comprehensive induction process for the 80 Kiwi firefighters upon arrival. They would be warned about all the hazards, which would include not only heat, flames and the terrain, but also wildlife such as bears and snakes. Blazes ranging in size from 40,000 to 150,000 hectares are exhausting firefighting resources in British Columbia. Geddes said the deployment offered a brilliant professional development opportunity. “All the stuff they learn over there they bring home and pass onto our troops on the ground here as well.” New Zealand had a reciprocal arrangement for assisting in such situations with Australia, the United States and Canada.

Currie co-ordinated the Alford Forest crews which helped fight the Port Hills fires. His wife Greta said yesterday she had not yet heard from her husband since he left, as they were only just landing in Canada. He had wanted to go not only to help the country deal with the severe wildfire situation, but also to gain experience. It was a sentiment backed by Donaldson’s wife Glenda. The couple had seen it as an opportunity to broaden his firefighting horizons and undertake tasks he would not be doing in his day-to-day job in Timaru.
