Magician delivers important anti-bullying message

Longbeach School students were wowed and amazed on Thursday by magician Elgregoe, who delivered an important anti-bullying message.

Using magic and ventriloquism, he delivered the show’s message “you’ve got the power”.

“It is about empowering kids and educating them that they have the power and can be the difference in stopping bullying at their school,” he said.

School principal Neil Simons said Elgregoe visits the school every few years to keep the important messages ticking over in the students’ minds.

“It is good how he is always adapting the show to cover new issues such as cyber-bullying as well,” he said.

The main message of the show centred around four key words; Honesty, Empathy, Resilience and Opportunities.

The words spell out “hero,” to go with the show’s theme of the students being able to be the hero and stop bullying.

Elgregoe is in his twentieth year of touring schools, he has delivered shows to more than one million students and has visited 20 per cent of primary schools in New Zealand.

“It is a great platform to deliver the message to the kids as often it can be hard to keep their attention for the full hour,” said Elgregoe.

“We get really good feedback from teachers who say the kids loved the show and that the messages had a good impact.”

No penalty for accused An Ashburton couple are out of pocket and angry after a district court judge convicted and discharged the man who broke in and trashed their house without any consequences.

Bruce and Veronica Morgan were away for Christmas when Jason Bates saw fit to smash his way into their Chalmers Avenue home on New Year’s Eve, damaging several windows and a door frame in the process.

Eventually the 27-year-old forced a leadlight door panel in to gain access.

Once inside Bates rummaged through the Morgans’ personal effects, including Veronica’s underwear, some of which he stashed in a bag. He also put clothing belonging to Bruce, and frozen and dried food in the bag.

He broke into the garage, and interfered with electronic equipment, damaged plasterboard and tore down curtains. Flour was strewn throughout the house, furniture was damaged, but that wasn’t the worst of it as far as the Morgans were concerned.

Bates vomited in the couple’s

bed and urinated on the bedroom floor, before showering and passing out on the dogs’ bed.

His offending was uncovered by the couple’s son who was checking the property in their absence the next morning.

Bates claimed he had been grossly intoxicated and thought he was at a relative’s property on Belt Road.

He was convicted of unlawfully entering a building in January and remanded at large for sentencing on February 20, however he missed that date and

appeared in the Ashburton District Court on Monday, where he walked away with a conviction but no sentence.

While insurance made good some of the damage, the Morgans have been left hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

They have had to replace their bed, bedding and all unsealed grocery items.

“There has been no consequence at all for him,” Bruce said.

And neither Bruce nor Veronica buy Bates’ excuse, or the claim

he had no intent to rob them.

“Would he treat his relative’s house like that,” Veronica said.

“And why would he put the stuff in the bag if he didn’t intend to take it with him?”

The couple feel violated and angry. While the offending was not deemed serious by the court, it has left its mark on the Morgans.

They worry about leaving their home empty and describe Bates’ convict and discharge sentence this week as a final “kick in the guts”.

Favel wants civic/library project back on track

Ashburton mayor Donna Favel faces the challenging task of pulling together a group of people with diverse opinions to decide the future of the district’s civic centre and library rebuild.

Favel voted against a last-minute motion by councillor Peter Reveley to have the library and civic centre built on two different sites and for the project’s control group of four to be disbanded and replaced with all councillors.

The last council team had narrowed the site options down to four, with the civic centre and library to be built on one site because of the significantly lower build cost and lower on-going operational costs. This passed through two community consultation processes.

At Thursday’s council meeting a majority of councillors supported Reveley’s motion, effectively putting the project back to square one. This group included five new councillors – Mark Malcolm, Selwyn Price, Diane Rawlinson, Thelma Bell and Lynette Lovett along with Alasdair Urquhart and Peter Reveley and they wanted to rewrite the civic centre and library project.

As mayor and chair of the project’s control group, Favel now has to work with a full team of councillors to come up with the preferred option. If the majority opt for a split site, the project will have to be restructured and reconsulted.

She had earlier supported taking another look at a site at Ash-

burton College (previously discounted.)

“I’m positive that we looked at the college again and it’s good to have some clarity around this, but I voted against the amendment on Thursday because I was happy with what we had on paper.

“As chairman of this it’s my job to get the project group back on track. The structure of the group has changed, but we have to get on with that.”

Favel said she accepted it might not be possible to get councillor unity over the final site; it would be a majority decision.

She intends to reconvene the group before the council’s July recess.

Overturning a decision made by a previous council might not be the norm but if a new team of councillors had the numbers, then they could do it, council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said.

If the reshaped control group wanted to proceed with two sites, then some fundamental characteristics of the project would have to be rewritten, he said.

“But first with the mix of everyone being on the control group we’ll be doing some more work on the benefits or not of the split site.”

If the split site option won the day then the project would require a new round of community consultation, Dalziel said.

“If governance tells us it’s two separate buildings we’ll do this but it will be more expensive; it will cost us.”

Snow fell on the Mid Canterbury mountains throughout the district’s heavy rain event on Thursday.

More rain for Mid Canterbury

Ashburton has already received its average April monthly rainfall this month, and may be in for another dousing next week.

As of yesterday, Ashburton had received 65.2 millimetres of rain. This compares to the average rainfall for the whole month of about 61 millimetres. Heavy snow also fell on Mt Hutt, and there were frosts in Ashburton and Methven.

The MetService recorded a minimum overnight temperature of 0.4 degrees in Methven and 1.8 degrees in Ashburton overnight Thursday, the lowest so far this year. A minimum

grass temperature was available for Ashburton only, and this was minus 0.6 degrees, confirming a frost for the town.

Meteorologist Lisa Murray said it most likely would have been the first frosts for the year in the two towns.

Niwa forecaster Ben Noll said New Zealand was stuck in a “meteorological traffic jam”, which was a pattern that favoured strong low pressure systems to the west of the country and sweeping high pressure systems to the south and east.

events affecting the country, and it looked like it would repeat itself once again next week.

“This may result in another round of heavy rain from about late Tuesday for the North Island and north and east of the South Island,” Noll said.

In addition, there was some uncertainty regarding the eventual strength and track of a tropical system north of Vanuata, and its progress would need to be watched closely as it could influence New Zealand’s weather later next week.

Sub-seasonal climate models monitored by Niwa indicate a persistence of the active weather into late April.

Youth terrorising Ashburton As Ashburton struggles to cope with the growing number of young offenders creating a mini crimewave across town, one of the organisations dealing with the impact of their actions has spoken out about his concerns. Dean Talbot from Talbot Security has written a letter to Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew and has asked her to present this to Parliament. It outlines the issues that his company and Ashburton Police deal with every day.

To ensure the public is aware of those issues and that the number of young people involved is growing, Talbot agreed to have his letter published in the Guardian.

Goodhew: MP Jo Goodhew said she was horrified by the depth of the problem detailed in Talbot’s letter.

She has committed to sharing this information with Police Minister Paula Bennett and Justice Minister Amy Adams.

“I’ll be saying to them, what can you do to help me?” she said.

There were a number of interventions that could be used by the Youth Court with young offenders and these needed to be used to the fullest, she said.

O

ver the past year, there has been a dramatic increase in youth offending in the Ashburton area, including burglaries, car thefts, thefts from vehicles, vandalism, intimidation, arson, assaults and fighting.

These offences have had a great impact on Ashburton with businesses and individuals having to suffer loss of personal items and stock, deal with repairs to vehicles and properties, and an ongoing worry of what they might have taken, damaged or find wrong when they go to their car or business each morning.

Some have spent money on extra security provisions and some have been victims on more than one occasion.

Individuals, security (Talbot Security Group), and police have been dealing with the offenders, spending countless hours patrolling, monitoring and responding to incidents, catching offenders on sites or collecting evidence to identify those offenders after the fact, and on many occasions these offenders have been put through the local Youth Court.

This is where all the hard work in trying to catch and deter these youth offenders is all undone and the work of the police, Talbot Security Group and other agencies involved in doing the groundwork are continuously let down.

For some reason, our local Youth Court, seems determined to let these offenders off their charges, remove any bail or other conditions that may have been imposed through other courts and make these offenders believe that they are untouchable and free to do what they want and continue to terrorise our town.

As you may have seen, this group has made national news lately, first with an assault in McDonald’s Family Restaurant, second with the assault at Ashburton College. On a personal level, one of my staff was assaulted through the window of a patrol car when he stopped to talk to several in this group who were breaking into a car.

Our first encounter with the foundation of this group of youth offenders was over 12 months ago

Dean Talbot when we caught them breaking into one of our client’s premises, we followed and observed the four offenders enter a property, and met the police there.

The police and I entered the property and spoke to the parents about the event. After speaking to the parents, who basically called the police racist and stated that the kids had been at home all night, we all left the property.

Within hours of this incident, we attended four other burglaries. While at the last burglary, myself and the police observed a vehicle that had been stolen from a property earlier that morning race past.

The police pursued the stolen vehicle and the driver ended up crashing into KFC on the corner of East and Dobson streets. After catching and identifying two of the offenders that were running away from the crashed car, it turned out to be two of the youth we had all dealt with earlier that same night.

God only knows how they survived that car crash. The two were arrested by the New Zealand Police and subsequently put through the Youth Court system

with little consequence. Since then offending has continued to happen on a regular basis, with this group now growing to an estimated 30 to 40 youth who have developed a gang-like culture wearing red colours and sporting red bandanas to show their allegiance to each other.

In recent months, the offending has gotten more serious with one of the latest events involving a police pursuit where the offenders’ (stolen) car was intercepted by police using road spikes to stop the vehicle. The offenders continued to drive with all tyres deflated and rammed into a police car.

The youth offenders were dealt with again by the police and the Youth Court system, where very strict conditions were placed on the four main offenders. Over the past three to four weeks, while those conditions were enforced on this group, youth offending dropped by around 97 per cent around Ashburton and outlying areas.

The main youth offenders went before Youth Court this week and all the conditions that the police had imposed on the offenders were discharged. Within 12 hours of this, burglaries and offending started again, not only with the four main offenders but also the followers. Within the past 72 hours of this email being sent, these offenders have been running riot around town intimidating people, threatening, doing burglaries and basically whatever they want.

I’m sorry but the Youth Court system has let us, our community and the NZ Police down again.

There appears to be no consequences for youth and they know it.

On Tuesday afternoon, members of this group saw fit to run around and jump on furniture etc at Beds R Us. When confronted by a staff member, one of them staunched up and asked “What the fuck are you going to do about it?”, from there they went over the road to New World and harassed staff and customers there.

Yesterday I observed a group of

12 walk through the Caltex forecourt toward Burger King, one member of this group was waving a realistic-looking pistol around and there were a number of concerned looking people about. My operations manager called the police, who attended and moved this group on from Burger King.

A short time later, they were in town, harassing and intimidating people, playing on the lifts and fire escapes at Somerset House and intimidating people in the arcade. One of our officers has observed a group of ladies literally huddled together as the group passed them and saw them being chased out of Somerset House by a woman from the gym on the top floor. A client from the arcade has called me about the group and one of our officers has seen one member of the group put what looked like a pistol in his pocket as they exited the arcade.

While there are about eight key offenders within this group as far as actual crimes go, the size of the group has made for some intimidating moments over the past few months.

There are a high number of businesses and individuals that have been victim to this group’s antics and behaviours and with police resources stretched, local businesses and agencies have stepped up and responded to an increasing number of incidents.

I myself have spent an extra $72,000 in man hours over the past year to try and stay on top of this group and still protect my clients and the community.

In summary, while a lot is being done to deter these youth against offending, I feel all efforts are being seriously undermined by the local Youth Court.

Some of these actions need serious consequences and this is not happening which is empowering these youths to commit more serious crimes and display an ‘untouchable’ attitude which at some stage will lead to activities set to end in serious injury or death.

Good support for allergy sufferers

Allergies need not limit children from enjoying their school and community life, says Rakaia School principal Mark Ellis.

Ellis was commenting this week during World Allergy Week, aimed at raising awareness of allergies.

Allergy New Zealand reports there is evidence that rates of food allergy globally have risen significantly in the last decade, and it affects up to 10 per cent of infants in New Zealand.

Milk, eggs and peanuts are the main foods involved. And while most children will outgrow their allergies, those to peanuts, treenuts, fish and shellfish tend to persist for life.

However, how people and institutions cope with allergies can make a big difference to sufferers and their families.

At Rakaia School, a pupil with a severe egg allergy has meant the school has had to seek the support of other parents.

“There’s a lot more allergies out there these days, it’s just about people understanding and appreciating that,” Ellis said.

His school had an allergy action plan, which he found online. He regularly communicated with the parents of the allergic child, who could go into anaphylactic shock from consuming eggs.

The school encouraged no sharing of lunches and had asked other parents not to stock their children’s lunch boxes with items containing eggs such as egg sandwiches.

Those parents had been more than supportive, Ellis said.

“I think it’s just about understanding if it was your child, how would you want it dealt with,” Ellis said.

Methven mum Sue van den Heuvel has come through the worst of parenting a child with extreme allergies.

Her eight-year-old son Jak has now grown out of the most severe allergies he has had since he was a baby – to dairy, soy, peanuts, fish, gluten and eggs.

She first became aware of the problem when he developed a skin rash after drinking some milk formula.

As a toddler he didn’t like fruit, so was basically restricted to a diet

of pureed vegetables and meat.

“With all these allergies it was very limiting because you don’t have a lot of variety,” van den Heuvel said.

At the age of three, Jak suffered a life-threatening reaction to peanuts and had to be rushed to the Methven Medical Centre.

His brother and cousin had been making chocolate peanut butter milkshakes in the kitchen.

“We said just make a separate chocolate milkshake for Jak. After drinking it, he went to finish a bit in the bottom of the glass, and got the wrong glass.”

He began gagging, his throat swelled up and he started to go limp. An adrenaline injection at the medical centre saved his life.

Jak attended preschool throughout his early childhood years, and van den Heuvel said she had been impressed with how well staff dealt with his allergies.

They had asked fellow parents to keep peanuts and peanut products out of their child’s lunch boxes, and ensured he did not come into contact with any such food which may have inadvertently come on to the premises.

Range finally back in action

After two years of hard graft and patience, the Ashburton Rifle Range is back in action.

Final touches were added to range yesterday, such as the electronic targets being calibrated and the flag pole strung, ready to fly the red flag indicating that the range was once again live.

Ashburton Range Users Association president John Snowden said he was really happy with how things had worked out.

“There was uncertainty about what we were going to do but once we got under way and had a plan everything sorted itself out,” he said.

There is little time between the re-opening of the range and the association hosting its first event, with the Canterbury Rifle Association Autumn Championships running today and tomorrow.

“We set a target to host the event and expected to have a bit more time than this but everything will be set to go,” Snowden said.

He expected about 20 to 25 shooters to take part in the competition coming from as far afield as Invercargill.

“It has created some attention

$2.1m drugs haul Three people from Europe have been arrested after $2.1 million worth of MDMA was found in their luggage at Christchurch Airport.

The trio, two men aged 32 and 35, and a woman aged 31, arrived on a flight from Europe via Singapore on Thursday, and were stopped and questioned by Customs officers.

X-rays of the luggage identified inconsistencies, and on further examination, several packages were found hidden inside the lining of one of the cases.

The range closed in April 2015 around safety concerns that bullets could ricochet and hit people using the nearby walking and cycle track.

To meet safety requirements, a new butt consisting of an 8m high concrete block wall was constructed, at a cost of $100,000.

“We were fortunate members of the deerstalking club were builders which helped with a lot of the woodworking side of

things.” The Smallbone Drive range has been operating since the 1870s, but attempts were made to relocate it to a site at Ashton Beach.

This project started in 1979 but was canned in July 2007 after Hakatere Huts residents objected.

Success for black-billed gull breeding season The Ashburton Zone Team, Forest & Bird, Mid-Canterbury 4WD Club and the Hakatere Huts community worked together to protect the Ashburton River black-billed gull population during their summer breeding season. This resulted in 60% of gulls born at the SH1 colony, reaching fledgling state.

FACT: Black-billed gulls are most threatened gull in the world. They breed on braided rivers.

Jury still deliberating Labour leader Andrew Little will spend the weekend in limbo on the verdict of his defamation trial – the jury was still deliberating and will meet again on Monday to continue. After a five-day trial, the jury was sent out on Friday morning to decide whether Little had defamed hoteliers Earl and Lani Hagaman for comments he made about a $100,000 donation to the National Party.

Hard-fought battle finally M

ethven can thank a group of determined women for the privilege of having its own community-run resthome.

Methven House was opened in April, 1977, and will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Tuesday.

Run by the Methven Aged Persons’ Welfare Association, Methven House is a 13-bed facility which also has four self-contained units.

Life member Derek Glass recalls the early days of the project.

The Ashburton Hospital Board was closing down the former maternity home on Morgan Street, when a high profile member of the Methven community approached him and asked him to oppose moves to turn the building into a resthome.

There had been a small, but vocal, group in the town at the time, writing letters of opposition to the newspapers, believing Methven could not sustain such a facility and that it would be a burden on the community.

The gentleman asked Glass to attend an approaching public meeting on the project and “knock this thing on the head”.

“That’s the way it was put to me – can you stop this bunch of dogood ladies in our community,” he said.

However, at the meeting Glass ended up being swayed by the merits of the project.

“I thought this is brilliant,” he said.

And not shy of a fight, he joined in with the so-called bolshy ladies, seeing the value of Methven being able to care for elderly within its own community for generations to come.

The group of women “who just refused to take no for an answer” had included Dulcie Watson, Natalie Currie, Kathryn McKendry, Doris Geddes and Dorothy Dolan.

The only surviving member of those five, Kathryn McKendry, is today proud of what the group, and everyone else who worked hard establishing the resthome, managed to achieve.

“If you are quite sure that if what you want to do is for the good of the community, you just put your head down and do it,” she said.

A groundswell of support was shown by a public meeting with a huge turnout of about 360 people.

One of the speakers, which Glass recalled as very influential, was born and bred Methven teacher and artist Viera Beattie.

“She carried a lot of mana, Methven needed this if we were a caring society,” Glass said. Beattie later became a long-time resident of Methven House, living there for 30 years.

There were discussions around a more than 20-bed home, but it was decided later to downscale the project and, when the building opened, it had eight beds.

The hospital board was resistant to Methven taking on the former maternity home, but many meetings later, and even having Natalie Currie make it on to the board, it finally gave in and allowed it to be purchased for $15,000.

It was a lot of money, equivalent to the price of two residential homes, but local artist Jean Wight-

Methven House founders had to fight to establish the facility. Forty years later the community-run resthome is still going strong. Susan Sandys reports.

man generously donated the funds in memory of her farmer parents Robert and Isabella Wightman.

Methven got together to raise money to enable their new building to be upgraded to health department standards.

Dulcie Watson said in the appeal brochure which went out at the time that not all elderly were fortunate enough to have relatives

to care for them.

“Every endeavour will be made to have a bright and happy home, and not an institution. Residents will be encouraged to assist with household chores and gardening.

They will be able to furnish their own rooms if they wish, thus helping to make ‘a home away from home’,” she said.

People listened to her and fellow committee members. If

any town in the world could get behind such a project and make it happen, it seemed Methven could.

A $25,000 one-week appeal was launched in 1974, and the goal was exceeded.

It was a fundraising effort which involved the whole community and people gave what they could, including not only money but farm produce and other goods.

Further to the one-week effort,

many events were held involving residents of all ages, including walkathons where school children were sponsored for how many kilometres they could cover.

The community effort continued into when the resthome opened, and it was staffed solely by volunteers in the afternoons.

People are invited to drop in and meet staff and residents, and learn more about the town’s community-run resthome.

teers took over jobs, one growing vegetables on site, someone else looking after the chooks, one for floral arranging, one for cleaning the windows.

Glass, who has himself spent countless hours at the facility doing all manner of handyman jobs, recalled a morning tea held for the volunteers. Over 50 women were there, and he had been astounded at the level of commitment to the facility.

The battles were not over. The health department tried to close the resthome down in the late 1980s, with new regulations coming in. And two other resthomes opened in the town, providing competition for Methven House in the 1990s. The homes later closed down and Methven House is today the only resthome in the town.

Nurse manager, Elisabeth Heybrook, who has been at Methven House for almost 10 years,

said the community connection and commitment from volunteers remained just as strong today as those early years.

Meals on Wheels is run from the home, where freshly-cooked meals are delivered to elderly throughout the town.

Heybrook said many residents had a long association with Methven and also with the building itself, with some having been born there when it was a maternity home, and others having given birth there.

And it has certainly proved to be the home away from home envisaged by Watson, with Heybrook saying what many residents liked about the place was its homeliness.

Methven House is to be replaced with a new facility as the town and surrounding areas once again come together to ensure care of their elderly for generations to come.

crust side down. Place under hot grill for 2 minutes. Remove from grill, turn cutlets over, drizzle with a dash of oil and return to the grill for a further 3-4 minutes.

Mixing it with the best

Two Ashburton indoor bowlers will head to Wellington this weekend to take part in a New Zealand Mat Blacks training camp.

Simon Thomas and Michael Lawson, who both play out of the Rakaia Indoor Bowling Club, will take part in the two-day camp which will see New Zealand’s best bowlers come together to ready themselves for the bi-ennial test match against Australia in Sydney next month.

The team for the match has already been named, with Thomas in to skip the men’s fours and the men’s triples.

Lawson is in the side as a reserve.

Thomas had some concerns about his availability for the side after he tore the rotator cuff off the bone and had to have it operated on during the off-season.

But he’s confident now he’s back on track.

“It’s back to full use now,” he said.

“I just have to do plenty of exercises each morning to loosen it up as it’s still quite tight.

“There are some positions that are difficult for it, but I’m confident in saying it’s not affecting my bowls anymore.”

Thomas and Lawson will take part in a number of training sessions on the mats but will also be able to feed from the knowledge of Don Tricker who is the former coach of the world champion Black Sox softball team.

Meanwhile the indoor bowls season in Ashburton is about to kick into gear, with most clubs around the district having held opening nights.

In a new initiative for the season, the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association are looking at holding one casual afternoon and one casual evening bowls sessions to try and attract new bowlers.

The plans are in place to look at a Tuesday afternoon and also a Friday evening as the options in which anyone can come and give the game a go with experienced players on hand to give coaching and advice where required.

Ashburton will play its first representative fixture against North Canterbury at the McNally Street Stadium on April 23.

The first major centre event will be the Championship Triples which are to be held next Sunday, April 17.

Track record will go Scott McLaughlin has predicted the end to one of Supercars longeststanding track records this weekend.

The arrival of the SuperSoft tyres at Symmons Plains is likely to put an end to Rick Kelly’s eight-year benchmark lap of 51.47 seconds at the short Tasmanian circuit. But whether it will be New Zealand driver McLaughlin or another driver pushing the record towards a new mark is anyone’s guess.

Frosty keen on Tassie Prodrive Racing Australia is looking for a bounce back weekend at round two of the Supercars Championship at Symmons Plains in Tasmania. The Ford outfit was off the pace at Clipsal before mixed results at the non-championship Australian GP round. 2015 champion Mark Winterbottom is calling on past success in Tasmania to help him break out of a slump. “Tassie is one of my favourites,” he said. “When you’ve had a bad couple of runs, the only way to fix it is to get back on track so I can’t wait.”

All set for Corsica Hayden Paddon is back alongside regular co-driver John Kennard for this week’s Rally Corsica but he got a taste of the future having spent last week with incoming partner Seb Marshall. Keeping the foot firmly on the pedal will be the modus operandi from Danny Hurley for Celtic when they take on the Glenmark and Cheviot combined side at home this afternoon in rugby’s Combined Division One competition.

With two wins in the bag and maximum points on the board, the green and whites have a perfect opportunity to really put the heat on their rivals after just three rounds if they can secure a win today and Hurley, who captains the side, will be pumping up his lads to try and ensure that’s the result they get.

“We’ve made the start we wanted to make,” Hurley said.

“That came off the back of a really good pre-season build-up I think, we were able to really hit the ground running.”

Hurley isn’t really sure what to expect from their rivals on the Celtic grounds this afternoon, but knows his side will have be on their game.

“They beat us in a knockout match last season, but you really

don’t know until about half-way through which teams you have to be really wary of in this competition.

“We just need to get out there and do our jobs properly and hopefully that will be enough to get us the result.”

With a good mixture of youth and experience in this year’s squad, Hurley said he was enjoying the challenge of captaining the Celtic side and had a lot of faith that his side could go a long way in the competition.

“I really enjoy it,” he said.

“And this year we have a really good bunch of guys with some young talent and a few older experienced guys there too, so it’s a really good mix.

“I think we have four 18-yearolds in the side, so that’s really encouraging.”

Just around the corner from Celtic, in contrasting scenarios, Hampstead will be trying to kickstart their season when they take on Burnham, Dunsandel and Irwell while Rakaia host Rolleston and Southern are heading to Oxford to look to build on their own perfect start to the season.

Club rugby for Read Humble Linfield Park in suburban Christchurch is the venue when Kieran Read begins a momentous rugby year this weekend. All Blacks captain Read is expected to play 40 minutes for University in a rare club appearance when they face Linwood today. It is the first match of the year for the 97-cap No.8, who has been recovering from wrist surgery. His last match was the test win over France in Paris in November.

Scrum a unique weapon T he rugby scrum has been in the news recently, and not for good reasons.

The Crusaders game against the Force a couple of weeks ago descended into farce on occasions, as the scrum collapsed, and collapsed again, adding grist to the mill for those do-gooders who would have the whole thing banned on account of the inherent dangers.

It happens in most games at some point, but sometimes the protagonists just can’t get it together and solve the issues, leading to the likes of the six-minute scrum that occurred late in that game.

Both packs were there to scrum – they said so quite plaintively when the exasperated ref asked them.

So is it the ref’s fault, ineptitude at not being able to control his game properly, despite the massive training these guys go through to get to that level?

Or is just two monster packs with slightly differing agendas, with neither prepared to back down an inch and surrender that tiny advantage to the opposition, and both happy to play brinkmanship with the whistleblower, knowing that at some point he’ll be reaching for the pocket.

It’s unfortunate that it can reach that point, because it’s a vital part of the game; a robust battle for possession that defines what rugby is all about.

It may not look that way to the layman just in from Mars watching a game, but there is an immense amount of skill required to get that scrum operating as both an attacking and defensive weapon on the field.

The number eight has so many jobs to do, taking a mental screenshot of the entire field and locating every player on

either side before sticking his head in unmentionable places.

The seven’s job description is pretty obvious; reach Steve Devereux the first five at exactly the MY SHOUT same time as the ball, and forcibly prevent him from doing anything at all with it.

The number six patrols the blindside, putting up a brick wall that no jinky little halfback or powerful winger can pierce.

The locks are the engine room, providing the core strength for the whole shebang, while the front row, well nobody actually knows what goes on in that dark and murky place except the inhabitants, and they are not generally known for their verbosity on the subject.

League has a scrum of sorts in their game, but it’s truly just a method of restarting play while keeping the lumbering forwards out of the way for a bit.

It’s amusing listening to the ref continually telling the half to put the ball in straight, when he may as well be passing it directly to the man in the back, but that’s ok because it suits that game’s purpose just fine.

A really good scrum is a sight to behold, and one of the best scenarios, that you only see three or four times a season, is where there’s two mammoth packs heaving, straining, exerting enormous pressure on each other, the ball is rolled in by the halfback – and it just sits there, completely untouched.

Neither hooker is able to construct the simple act of lifting a foot to strike at the ball that’s sitting literally inches away from their faces, because the opposing forces are exactly equal, creating a contest of wills that nobody wants to lose.

It may not be as pretty as some slick backline moves, but it makes for absolutely superb rugby theatre.

Who doesn’t love a bit of golf to keep the sporting mind buzzing over. The Masters get under way this weekend, one of the most magical tournaments on the annual calendar, despite missing the late great Arnold Palmer for the first time since 1958. Take it as a time-killer, or a way to switch off for a few hours, and the opening rounds are always some of the best. Our sneaky tip? Jason Day to make the Top 5 at $6.

Redwood Invasion was going to win for us last week, the celebratory drink was poured and looking really good – until he forgot which foot went where and galloped for a few strides before getting back into his groove and running third, still paying a yummy $3.60 for the place. This week we head to rugby and more specifically the Highlanders who are taking on the Blues. Both sides are now going okay after somewhat rough starts, but we think the Highlanders might just get by Tana’s mob, but only narrowly so at $2.60 the 12 and under is looking good.

The Ashburton College First XV will take on Timaru Boys’ High School today at Ashburton College.

It’s a good chance to take in some of the rising rugby talents from around the region, so we think it’s worth heading along. Kick-off at 12 noon.

New-look First XV

The Ashburton College First XV will look to ramp things up when they take to the paddock for their first serious hit-out of the season today when they take on Timaru Boys’ High School on the College main field.

After two pre-season matches against local Under-18 sides, the clash this afternoon will give a true indication of where things are at.

“We’ve had two good wins in the two matches we have played so far,” co-coach Simon Fleetwood said.

“But this will be another step up.

“Timaru Boys’ High School are it really when it comes to what we will be facing in the competition.”

The College side this year will face a few changes with a small group of players from Mount Hutt College joining the team for the year which will, most likely, lead to a name change for this year’s competition.

At this stage Mid Canterbury Schools’ First XV is the leading option for the new look side, although nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet.

Fleetwood is expecting that to be tidied up in the coming weeks before the real competition begins.

An open approach to today’s match is being taken by the College side, with Fleetwood keen to see his lads try out a few new things.

“We have pretty much given them a free licence to go out there and put a bit of the stuff we have been doing at training into practice.

“There are some new moves they have been working on that we are keen to see used.

“But it’s just a case of getting another good match under the belt and preparing for the competition.”

The First XV will be opening their competition account on April 29.

Oracle lost control in a manoeuvre and tipping onto one hull, coming precariously close to capsizing. Another gust of wind and Oracle’s AC50 race boat would have likely capsized, causing serious damage just 50 days out from the start of the big regatta.

Super Rugby ‘a shambles’ The Super 12 was the southern hemisphere’s golden goose.

Alistair Hargreaves, the former South Africa and Saracens lock, remembers getting up at the crack of dawn as a boy to watch the Canterbury Crusaders.

“Even though I was South African I would watch all their games because they were so good,” Hargreaves said.

“It was the most compelling tournament to watch anywhere. The rest of the rugby world was in awe of it.”

“Through no fault of the players, they are now playing in an absolute dud.”

So how did it come to this? How did a competition that was so far removed from European club rugby that it appeared as if they were playing a different sport became so convoluted and confused?

The short answer is greed. The more franchises, the more matches, the more bums on seats and television income.

Or so the thought went.

“It was a classic case of trying to fix something that isn’t broken,” Nick Evans, the Harlequins fly-half and former All Black, said.

Arnie honoured at Augusta

BY GUY HEVELDT Jack Nicklaus wiped away tears before piercing the first fairway to officially open the 2017 Masters.

The tears, of course, were for close friend and Masters icon Arnold Palmer who passed away last year.

It’s the first time in 60 years Palmer is absent from Augusta National for the year’s first major.

Just 12 months ago, the fourtime champion was a non-playing part of the ceremony due to his declining health, forced to watch Nicklaus and fellow legend Gary Player hit their tee shots to open the tournament.

This year, his friends did it in his honour.

Augusta chairman Billy Payne gave an emotional tribute to Palmer, including honouring his widow Kathleen.

With “Arnie’s” green jacket draped on a chair, Payne said, “It is a wonderful but in one respect difficult day.

“The almost unbearable sadness we all feel at the passing of Arnold is surpassed only by the love and affection for him, which

Payne then asked the crowd to remember Palmer with a moment’s silence.

It was then down to business,

in front of an eager, yet chilly crowd on a crisp morning.

Nicklaus and Player had been building up to the moment, with some ribbing about who would

be able to drive the furthest.

Player, a three-time champion at Augusta, opened proceedings with a well placed drive down the right-hand side of the fairway.

Even at the tender age of 81, he still had all the attributes of someone who knows how to swing a club.

But, he was outdone by an emotional Nicklaus, who had to take a moment before his adoring fans welcomed his tee shot, straight down the middle, with rapturous applause and cheers.

It went past Player’s ball by a matter of metres.

Nicklaus, famously known as the Golden Bear, then gestured to the skies as if to honour his late friend.

Everyone who passed through the gates at Augusta yesterday was proudly honouring Palmer.

They were presented with an “Arnie’s Army” badge, in reference to the name given to his fans during his playing days.

Augusta will honour Palmer in a permanent way in the years to come, with chairman Payne indicating they’re still to decide what is the best way to do his name justice.

Riley to lead Ferns Defender Ali Riley has been named as the new captain of the Football Ferns. The 29-year-old Americanborn Kiwi, who made her debut for New Zealand against Australia in 2007, has captained the Ferns on four occasions previously and will lead the team as they look to peak for the pinnacle events – the 2019 FIFA World Cup in France and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Riley, a member of the Ferns’ exclusive 100 club, takes over the captaincy from Abby Erceg who retired from international football following the Cyprus Cup in March.

Lingard stays at Man U Jesse Lingard has signed a new and improved deal that will keep him at Manchester United until at least 2021. With the club since the age of seven, the winger established himself in the first team under Louis van Gaal last season after several loan spells away from Old Trafford.

Lingard ended the campaign by netting the winner in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace and this term scored at Wembley in United’s Community Shield and EFL Cup triumphs. Lingard’s deal is reported to be worth PS100,000 ($NZ165,000) a week.

Rookies in for Hunt

BY MATT ENCARNACION Parramatta players believe they have the defensive nous to snuff out the the threat of Kieran Foran when they meet the Warriors tomorrow.

The Eels will face Foran for the first time since his shock departure from the club midway through last season due to personal issues.

The 26-year-old made a successful return to the game in the Warriors’ win last week, however

the Eels reckon they can reduce his on-field impact.

“You get to know each other’s traits when you play alongside someone else in the same team,” Eels co-captain Beau Scott said yesterday. “It’s always handy but he’s going to be a handful.

“He’s just a natural footballer.

He loves the game and when he’s allowed back playing again, it didn’t matter who it was for, I was happy for him.”

Foran played just eight games in his lone season with the blue

and gold last year but centre Brad Takairangi said it was enough to become familiar with his game.

Asked if their experience alongside Foran would help at Mt Smart Stadium, he said: “I think so, just knowing his traits.

“But we can’t worry just about one player, obviously he does straighten their attack up and he’s a tough player.

“But hopefully we can hold onto the ball and do a good job against them.”

While Eels players were pre-

paring for their rendezvous with a former team-mate, they were reluctant to discuss the possibility of Mitchell Moses joining them mid-season.

Wests Tigers coach Ivan Cleary confirmed on Thursday the club had denied Moses’ request on an immediate release to join the Eels.

Moses’ impending arrival at Parramatta would be a huge boost for the Eels, who have lost three in a row after opening with consecutive wins.

Kane carrying the drinks He’s the world’s number three ranked batsman in Twenty20 cricket but Kane Williamson was left carrying the drinks in his side’s Indian Premier League opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The baffling decision by Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody got quite the reaction from social media.

Moody went with fellow Aussie Moises Henriques at number three over the Black Caps skipper. Williamson was instead named 12th man, a rare role for New Zealand’s record holder for the most centuries in test matches.

Williamson has racked up just eight games over the past two seasons in the IPL, albeit with a hamstring injury disrupting some of last season.

The New Zealand number three hit his highest T20 score of 73 not out against Bangladesh in January, averaging 52.66 with the bat in the last 12 months.

Indian viewers were stumped by the decision, however they might have to get used to the sight of Williamson carrying drinks onto the field.

Collusion has no place in democracy Sue Newman

atching the antics around the Ashburton District Council meeting table could become the best spectator sport in town.

Unfortunately the games played out around that table are viewed by only a few, the two or three diehards who sit in the public gallery week after week and the media who have no choice.

The council table games would be entertaining if their outcome wasn’t so serious, but the football those councillors are kicking around is this district’s future, the way it grows and progresses. Ultimately what they decide affects the quality of life of residents today and into the future.

Around the council table sit 12 councillors and one mayor, democratically elected by residents. We voted for the people we believed would best serve the district’s needs for the next three years, the people we believed would put aside any personal agenda, who would confidently stand up for what they believed was right and who would vote on issues without fear or favour.

You have to ask, is that’s what’s happening?.

It’s very clear that two factions are developing around the meeting table with Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel stuck uncomfortably in the middle.

On one side there’s Neil Brown, Stuart Wilson, Russell Ellis, Leen Braam and Liz McMillan and on the other Mark Malcolm, Selwyn Price, Diane Rawlinson, Lynette Lovett, Thelma Bell, Peter Reveley and Alasdair Urquhart, most with Ashburton Citizens’ Association links who’re making it their mission to overturn decisions made by their predecessors.

From the media bench it appears those decisions are not made after healthy debate, they’re being made in advance.

There’s a definite air of collusion. Power for those hankering for power and comfort for the followers who’re too new or too insecure to stand up to the pack.

On Thursday the colluders voted to turn the civic centre and library project on its head, throwing out months of work and community consultation to chase an already discounted option.

And they decided they no longer wanted an appointed group to do the grunt work on this, they all wanted to have a say. The outcome of the discussions to come will be pre-ordained.

And that means nothing will happen, the district’s progress will stall and our slide into mediocrity will begin.

Inspired by one wee girl’s bravery and empathy W

hen we think of bravery, most of us think of a fireman dashing into a burning building and saving a life. Or it could be a passerby runs into the sea amongst dangerous rips and saves the life of someone struggling in the water.

Most of us will not ever see an act of bravery in the traditional way I’ve just mentioned.

So if you could see an act of bravery, would you want to? I would like to invite you to one, but I will ask you for money if you come.

There are other forms of bravery, and yet again, it has taken a child to remind me that my own assumptions should not be set in concrete.

Earlier this year, a young girl and her mum approached me and talked about the mission she was on. Courtney is the middle child of the Ross family. Her older sister attended Tinwald, and her younger brother attends as well.

Her mission was simple, she wanted to donate her hair to Freedom Hair in Dunedin so that it could be used for a wig for a child who has lost theirs due to cancer treatment. In that one sentence, that one goal, is a huge

amount of stuff.

Courtney is eight years of age and in Year 2 (Standard 2 in olden-day terms). She has never had an actual haircut. Her hair has been trimmed etc, but never cut.

Now I have a gorgeous 10-year-old daughter who is so into all things girly. Her hair has only ever been trimmed and now extends most of the way down her back. I know how much she loves having long hair.

So, imagine that you have not had a haircut in eight years, for Courtney this means she has no memory of a haircut and no concept about how she will look when it is cut. She needs to have at least 14 inches (that’s 35.56cm in modern-day terms) cut off to send away. Already it is dawning upon you my little Asburtonian, what a significant decision this is.

Her goal is also a massive statement about empathy and equity. Courtney is shy and not really interested in fame. She is not doing this for a reward, a sticker or certificate or because it is a fad. Courtney demonstrates empathy and even though may never meet the child who benefits from her decision, she wants their life to have equity with other children.

Her decision resonated in me and left me asking, ‘ok, how can I help?’ So next thing I know, I’m agreeing to having my head shaved when Courtney has hers cut. Honestly, there is not much there and what comes off couldn’t be used to make a nest for a family of wetas!

I’ve actually done this before, I was in high school and the RSA barber advertised cheap haircuts so I went and got a head shave.

My mother cried and didn’t speak to me. At dinner that night we ate in silence while my siblings smirked at me. Dad eventually broke the slightly chilled atmosphere when he said, “the only people who have haircuts like that, are in prison”.

My younger brother still reminds me of how he could misbehave for ages because my parents were distracted by my “kiwifruit” haircut, as he called it.

So on the last day of term, April 13, at 2.15pm, there will be an assembly in the Tinwald School Hall. I would like you to be there. You are welcome as long as you bring some moolah, some pesos, some dollars to put in a blue bucket for the Child Cancer Foundation.

I believe what Courtney is doing is an act of bravery. Her first haircut in front of the whole school, her friends and classmates, her teachers, her family.

You have a chance to witness it and demonstrate your support by encouraging and supporting a very worthy cause.

I’m there because yet again I am challenged and inspired by children who never cease to amaze me.

NZ banking sector vulnerable New Zealand’s banking sector remains vulnerable to potential money laundering and terrorism financing risks, says the Reserve Bank in its latest assessment.

“The banking sector continues to have a relatively high potential risk, because money launderers and terrorist financiers are more likely to target financial institutions in that sector, rather than targeting in other sectors,” the central bank said in its Sector Risk Assessment, published Friday.

Non-bank deposit takers and life insurers face lower risks, it said.

The RBNZ underscored the assessment didn’t take into account the adequacy or effectiveness of any money laundering or terrorism financing controls that have been put in place. The study is

US investor could lose NZ winery US wine fund manager Charles Banks could be removed as an owner of New Zealand’s Trinity Hill winery if he is found not to be of “good character”, says the Overseas Investment Office.

The OIO said Banks has pleaded guilty to a charge of fraud in the US. Banks – former financial adviser to NBA player Tim Duncan – pleaded guilty on Monday to a count of federal wire fraud.

Banks is the majority shareholder of Terroir Capital LLC, which manages the Terroir Winery Fund. The Terroir Winery Fund was granted consent to acquire Hawke’s Bay winery Trinity Hill in 2014 and Banks has been co-owner of Trinity Hill since December 2014.

A condition of the consent required ‘individuals with control’ of the Terroir Winery Fund (including Banks) to remain of good character, the OIO said in a statement.

In light of Banks’ guilty plea, the OIO is considering whether Banks remains of good character, it said.

“The OIO has met with Terroir Winery Fund’s representatives

US wine fund manager Charles Banks could be removed as an owner of New Zealand’s Trinity Hill winery. to make it clear that in our view Mr Banks is unlikely to meet his on-going obligation to remain of good character.

“If Mr Banks is not of good character, then we will seek to have him to be removed as an individual with control of sen-

sitive land in New Zealand,” it said. When assessing good character among other elements the OIO looks at “offences or contraventions of the law.”

According to the OIO, Banks is due to be sentenced on June 26.

Banks offer victims financial support Banks have stepped up to provide a package of financial relief options for individuals and businesses hit by yesterday’s major floods and are urging people to get in touch if they need help.

Westpac, BNZ and Kiwibank are all offering temporary overdraft options while ASB has said it will tailor help to people’s individual needs.

ANZ is also expected to announce an assistance package today but has yet to confirm what that will be.

In a statement Westpac said it was committed to helping customers affected by the recent flooding

and had a range of options including: a temporary overdraft, the ability to stop home loan repayments for up to three months, a temporary reduction in home loan repayments and immediate access to term investments.

Westpac’s business customers have also been offered the ability to have a temporary overdraft or defer payment of business credit cards.

BNZ chief executive Anthony Healy said the bank understood customers would have different needs now and in the coming weeks.

“If you are a BNZ customer and

you need assistance, please get in touch with us and we will do our best to help,” said Healy.

Kiwibank said it would offer affected customers a three month overdraft of up to $1000 or an increase to $1000 for existing overdraft or revolving credit facilities at standard rates to assist with unexpected expenses as a direct result of the event.

An ASB spokeswoman said the bank had been working with customers affected by the flooding to assess their individual needs and would offer support as our customers assess the damage.

Syria decries ‘aggression’ Syria denounced a US missile attack early yesterday morning on a government-controlled air base where US officials say the Syrian military launched a deadly chemical attack earlier this week, calling it an “aggression” that led to “losses”.

Rebels welcomed the US attack.

About 60 US Tomahawk missiles hit the Shayrat air base, southeast of Homs, a small installation with two runways, where aircraft often take off to bomb targets in northern and central Syria.

They targeted the base’s airstrips, hangars, control tower and ammunition areas, US officials said.

They were fired from two warships in the Mediterranean Sea, in retaliation for Tuesday’s deadly chemical attack that officials said used chlorine mixed with a nerve agent, possibly sarin.

A military official said an air base in central Syria was hit early yesterday, causing material damage.

Another statement, also attributed to an unnamed official, referred to “losses”. The officials did not elaborate.

Talal Barazi, the governor of Homs province, where the targeted air base is located, told The Associated Press by phone that most of the strikes appeared to target the province in central Syria.

He also said the strikes were meant to “support the terrorists on the ground”.

A Syrian opposition group, the Syrian Coalition, welcomed the US attack, saying it puts an end to an age of “impunity” and should be just the beginning.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with The Associated Press that “unconditional support is not possible in this current world.”

But he added that “it is not correct to say that Moscow can convince Mr. Assad to do whatever is wanted in Moscow.

“This is totally wrong.”

Russia has provided military support for the Syrian government since September 2015, turning the balance of power in Assad’s favour.

Disabled woman kept as sex save for eight years

BY MARTIN ROBINSON Caroline Baker is the wife of a rapist who allowed her husband to keep a disabled woman as a sex slave and have four children with another mistress inside their “house of horrors”.

Baker, who was jailed for three years this week, also abused the woman kept prisoner in a room with no light, bedclothes or carpets behind a handleless door.

Her husband Keith Baker, 61, was jailed for 15 years for his eight years of abuse, which left the woman emaciated and with just one tooth, according to Daily Mail.

She was given Quality Street sweets when she was ‘good’ and submitted to the attacks

by Baker, his wife and other men who were filmed raping her.

Neighbours in Craigavon in County Armagh in Northern Ireland did not know she was there and she was reported missing by her husband in mainland Britain in 2004 but never traced.

Yesterday a judge lifted a reporting ban on showing Mrs Baker’s face as she started her three year jail term.

Yesterday a former mistress of a rapist who kept a disabled woman as a sex slave told how

the poor victim was finally freed from her ‘little prison’.

Mandy Highfield told how she reported the couple to police after she was beaten up by Baker.

Ms Highfield, who was the mother of four of Baker’s children, told the BBC: “They were sick people, really sick people.

“I don’t know how anyone could do that to a mentally disabled woman.”

Ms Highfield said of the woman’s cell: “Keith took the handle off the door.

“There was no light bulb in the light, no carpet on the floor, no curtains up against the window. It was like a little prison.”

She reported Baker after she was also subjected to vicious beatings at his hands.

Speaking of the moment police and social services came to free the captive woman, she added: “They took her out, but she didn’t want to go because she was scared.

“I said to her: ‘You’ve got to go; you can’t live like this anymore’. Then she left with the police and the social worker.”

The “house of horrors” was two terraces knocked into one – the victim lived in the squalid half and was allowed to shower only once a week and her ‘toilet’ was overflowing with human waste.

Read and interpret drawings to be able to setup mould work and locate cast-in items to specification Setup mould work in a timely fashion with minimal rework Assist in placing completed steel cages into moulds Accurately place and secure cast-in items in a timely fashion.

Experience in handling and placing concrete, understanding its properties and experience in using mechanical floats and finishing tools is essential.

Precast Apprentice: This role would ideally suit somebody who is looking for a career in the precast industry.

Along with concrete finishing, this role will at times expand into boxing and panel set up and site clean-up. Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and having excellent attention to detail.
