Dairy goats could become a big dollar earner for the Ashburton District, with a company investing millions of dollars in establishing a goat milk infant formula plant in Ashburton. Plans were unveiled yesterday by the New Zealand Dairy Collaborative Group (NZDCG) for its major shareholders Fineboon to establish a formula processing plant at the Ashburton Business Estate. The product will be exported to China. Solomon Ling, managing director for NZDCG said Ashburton was chosen for the processing plant because it was well irrigated and was an abun-
dant producer of the grain required to feed dairy goats. “We started out looking around the world for a base. New Zealand has a good image for a clean, untouched environment that is well received in China and we realised Ashburton was the best set up with irrigation and grain producers,” he said. The lack of dairy goat herds in the Ashburton District was not a deterrent for the company as it planned to source some milk product from an existing dairy goat co-operative in the North Island and to import whole milk powder from Europe until goat numbers built up locally. “After talking to people in Ashbur-
ton we know a lot of farmers are quite keen to explore whether they can change and do hybrid farming. It is a very open minded community,” Mr Ling said. The new plant will be equipped to handle both cow and goat milk, but goat milk infant formula will be its main focus. With the purchase of land at the Ashburton Business Estate secured for the plant, Mr Ling said the project was now in design stage with work under way to secure the high-tech machinery required.
