Farmers digest water plan effects by linda clarke

The majority of Mid Canterbury farmers are already farming to strict rules to curb nitrate leaching and have Farm Environment Plans, says Ashburton Water Zone Committee chair Bill Thomas.

Thomas said farmers had done a lot of work to reduce their environmental footprint and were continuously making improvements.

New proposed rules around fresh water were released by Government on Thursday and Thomas said some of the nitrate rules would be hard to achieve as crops and grass needed nitrogen to grow and survive.

The water zone committee, operative for 10 years, has done a lot of work balancing the environmental and economic expectations of the district against water quality and quantity standards and biodiversity gains, detailed in Canterbury’s Land and Water Regional Plan.

“We are doing things already, we are well down the process.”

He said farmers in the foothills and high country would face the biggest changes, as farmers on the flat plains had already met targets that included fencing stock from waterways.

“Most, if not all, are working to lower nitrate leaching.”

Thomas and Federated Farmers president David Clark said they were expecting a big turnout to next week’s primary sector meeting in Ashburton, where the Essential Freshwater action plan will be discussed.

Clark said farmers were sick of being branded as environmental villains and they should come to the meeting armed with facts and figures about how the freshwater rules would affect their business.

“We thought we were already on the journey but other catchments and other areas are not so advanced and they face a massive shock.”

He is worried current Government policies will cause a 1980s scale collapse in confidence in the agricultural sector.

Climate Change Minister James Shaw, speaking to NZME media yesterday, said he had visited

some farms near Methven, including that of precision agriculturalists Roz and Craige Mackenzie.

“There is some amazing stuff going on, particularly in Canterbury, which is where the greatest concern is about the new water standards.”

In the Hekeao/Hinds Plains, MHV operates under Plan Change 2 of the Land and Water Regional Plan which includes the requirement for a 36 per cent reduction in nitrate leaching by 2035, with the first step down required by 2025.

“Kaitiaki, or guardianship of the

land, takes many forms and our farmers take their role in this regard very seriously. I’m proud of the progress our farmers are making towards improved environmental outcomes for the benefit of us all.

“We know that we have more to do, and seeing the way that our catchment is embracing technology, science and the many options available for improved environmental outcomes, some at reasonable cost to the farmers, is really positive and something we should all be celebrating.”

Brooks said she needed to thoroughly digest more detailed aspects and potential implications, but she was confident that MHV farmers were well on track with meeting the necessary targets.

“We will need to analyse how the target of 1mg/L of nitrogen in the waterways was set, what the implications of that are and, if it is realistically reflective of a healthy aquatic ecosystem in our region.

“The policies and processes that we have in place presently regarding land use change appear, on first reading, to be sufficient to meet the changes that are proposed.”

MHV Water will be making a

submission on the freshwater plan.

The action plan acknowledged Environment Canterbury has had its own operative Land and Water Regional Plan for some years, with catchment specific rules.

Environment Canterbury’s director of strategy and planning Katherine Trought said future plan changes would need to take full account of all the National Policy Statement changes when they were finalised.

Ashburton Water Zone manager Janine Holland confirmed most farmers were making good progress addressing nitrogen losses.

“Environment Canterbury has been working with farmers to encourage them to put together their nitrogen baselines, create farm environment plans and apply for land use consent to farm.

While the focus in the Ashburton Zone to date has been on larger irrigators and those farming in the Hinds catchment, support is available for any farmer wishing to tackle these issues.

“Ashburton Zone Team staff can advise on good management practices that help improve water quality and reduce nitrogen loss.”

Accident road show coming to town

The Road Traffic Accident Trauma Charitable Trust will be bringing their road show to the Mid Canterbury community on Wednesday as they look to connect with local communities to discuss the impact that road accidents have on communities.

There will be guest speakers from emergency services, including Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess.

“It will very much be about what are our roles with traffic accidents and our part we play,” he said.

Burgess said Fire and Emergency New Zealand is looking to play more of a prevention role with traffic accidents as well as fires.

“We will also be taking the gear along (that would typically be used at an accident scene, such as the jaws of life), which is great for people to get a look at as it is something they are often not familiar with unless they are in a bad situation.”

The trust organises the Road Accident Trauma Remembrance Day in Christchurch, and due to its success they are looking to bring the concept to rural communities on a smaller scale.

“It is certainly an opportunity for the local community to

connect and discuss the implications of road trauma. As the reach is far beyond those directly involved in the crash itself,” Trust founder Sarah Dean said.

The RTATCT organises the annual Road Accident Remembrance Day, which is an event

that is open to the general public and acknowledge survivors and those who have tragically lost their lives in accidents, and recognises and thanks those involved in post-accident care and recovery.

“We see the road shows as a

way of promoting community leadership, collaboration and a sense of connectiveness,” Dean said.

“It is also important we reinforce there are many people in our community that tirelessly dedicate their careers to road

safety and post accident care and recovery.

“We have a wonderful line-up of engaging yet informative speakers and it is important we hear their stories and it is our hope it will assist in cultivating human behavioural change to post trauma as well as attitudes to driving.”

Dean says the road show will demonstrate positive examples of people working together to reduce the impacts of road trauma in Ashburton and surrounding community.

“We intend to extend the road shows to those areas in the Canterbury Region heavily impacted by road crashes, including wider Christchurch and beyond,” she said.

“I am confident that, with general awareness, we can make a positive impact to these local communities.”

The RTATCT provides support and advice to minimise the impact of road trauma in the community, including other initiatives such as its annual Canterbury Road Trauma Awards, stakeholder consultation and free counselling services.

The road show will be at the Balmoral Hall on September 11 at 7pm, and a gold coin donation would be gratefully appreciated to cover the associated costs to bring the road show to Ashburton.

Packing up 100 years of Fairton meat plant history

Silver Fern Farms will be packing up more than 100 years of history at its Fairton site after its pelt house closes.

Head of sustainability and communications Justin Courtney said the company would look to finding a suitable purchaser for the

site, but had no plans currently. In the interim it would continue to run the farm.

“We are about to start working through a decommissioning plan.

This will address site remediation, should any be needed,” Courtney said.

Closure of the pelt house follows closure of the company’s sheep

meat processing plant in 2017, with the loss of 370 staff.

The company is committed to preserving items from the plant that have historical interest for the local community, as the facility has been operational for more than 100 years.

At its peak, Fairton had three chains and more than 700

staff, including management and supervisors.

“There is a collection of historical documents, photographs and memorabilia from Fairton which we will collate,” Courtney said.

“We offered these to the Ashburton District Council’s museum to see if it can form part of their museum’s local history collection

It’s the job of the Council to make decisions on behalf of our community that will make Ashburton a better place to live, work and play.

In the last three years we’ve seen decisions that have gone against the strong wishes of the community, like the permanent closure of the Ashburton i-Site Centre.

The plan to move the water feature from East Street, initially voted for by a majority of Council, was never feasible. Those involved in the original design and construction agreed it would cost far more than the Council estimated. That poor decision took weeks to unwind.

Every day that Council spends wasting time on nonsense is a day they’re not discussing the big challenges and opportunities our district faces.

ACL to give fountain a revamp

Water once flowed over a series of granite plateaus on a fountain in the centre of Ashburton.

A shiny copper salmon at the fountain’s centre reflected in the water below, testimony to the love of fishing held by the couple who bequested the structure.

But today the fountain is a sad shadow of its former self, and sits derelict as thousands of cars pass daily on State Highway One. Not many seem to have noticed the fountain in recent years, located on the corner of Havelock Street and West Street, but it is now being restored thanks to Ashburton Contracting Limited (ACL).

Plumbing division manager Aaron Gairns said he remembered seeing the fountain being built in the 1980s, and used to walk past it on his way to school.

He was the one who decided to take some notice just recently, and asked others what they knew about it.

“No-one I spoke to could remember when it was going,” Gairns said.

He went to the Ashburton District Council, which owns the structure and the land it is on, and found managers were happy for ACL to take on a restoration project.

ACL is restoring a fountain on State Highway One in the centre of Ashburton.

He also approached the Ashburton Museum, and found the fountain was a bequest by Robert and Myra McElhinney and built in 1983. It was among bequests they made to the town, which also included $2000 to maintain

and repair the town clock.

Gairns said Laser Electrical and glass artist Tash Sim had come on board with the restoration project. The copper fish, which has lost its head, was to be replaced with a glass one. Downlights would be installed on poles at the site, and there would be lights on the fountain as well.

A drinking fountain at the top of the structure and accessed

from behind has been repaired, as has a seat at the fountain’s rear.

“All the infrastructure is there, it just needs a bit of love,” Gairns said.

A reinstatement ceremony may be held when the newly restored fountain is switched on for the first time.

Meanwhile, McElhinney extended family members are pleased to see the fountain being restored.

Knox Hampton, a retired teacher of Ashburton, said as a child she knew Myra and Robert, known as Bob, who was related to her mother.

The couple liked salmon fishing, and gardening. They did not have children, and she was aware of another bequest – they left their house and an adjoining section on Cameron Street to St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Family records showed Bob was born in Ashburton in 1907.

He married Myra Black in the town in 1932. Bob served in World War Two and upon his return was a barber and tobacconist at Hinds, before moving the business to Tancred Street. After the war he would go to Ashburton Hospital to kindly provide his services as a barber and shave male patients.

He died in Ashburton in 1977, while Myra died in 1981.

Business case will test second bridge future

The future of the second Ashburton River bridge will have its first acid test early next year when a business case for its construction is put before roading funders.

In March, a programme business case will be reviewed by the NZ Transport Agency and what happens from that point will determine the project’s future – is it in the right place and whether the time frame for its construction is correct, Ashburton District Council roading manager Brian Fauth said.

The business case will include not only the bridge, but also roading from Grahams Road in the south through to the bridge’s exit onto Chalmers Avenue.

When the bridge project was given the green light by a commissioner after public submissions were heard, there was a list of issues he wanted addressed such as the roundabout at Walnut and Chalmers Avenue and upgrading the surface of Chalmers Avenue, but they were not part of the business case, Fauth said.

The council has estimated the cost of the second bridge at $35 million and tagged the construction to start in 2026 and it has budgeted to pay just 20 per cent of the cost itself. It is pushing for NZ Transport Agency to pay the remaining 80 per cent to minimise the impact on ratepayers.

The push to have NZTA fund 80 per cent of the bridge also comes from the council’s belief that it is not simply a local bridge, that it will benefit the flow of state highway traffic too.

Work on that case has begun, Fauth said and it will undergo a review by council in February before it is submitted to NZTA.

In brief Legal speeds review Legal speeds on some urban streets may be significantly reduced as a review of Ashburton District speed limits gets under way. Urban streets and some streets leading into Ashburton and rural villages could be in for a dramatic speed limit shakeup, with some narrower urban streets likely to see speeds reduced to 30 kilometres per hour. Lower speed limits could be imposed on many streets on the outskirts of Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia and lower speed zones may be created around schools. The council reviews its local speed limits every three years and takes on board community feedback received over that time. The changes are not set in concrete, however, and detailed maps showing the proposed changes will go out for public consultation in November. There would be significant costs involved in changing or installing new speed signs, and this would be covered out of the normal roading budget, Fauth said.

Sex offences The former head of Victim Support’s southern office has been jailed for 14 years for historic child sex offences. David John Charteris can finally be named after interim name suppression lapsed as he was sentenced at Christchurch District Court yesterday. The 65-year-old was Victim Support’s southern practice manager when police launched an investigation into historic sex abuse allegations in 2016.

Armed standoff over Police have arrested a man who came out of a property that they had surrounded in Whangarei after a dramatic armed standoff. Earlier, armed police, dogs and close to 20 patrol cars descended on an address blocking State Highway 1 as they sought a wanted individual.

A police spokesman said due to the major operation at Western Hills Dr, SH1 had been closed between Central Ave and Selwyn Ave, near Caltex and Burger King.

The Armed Offenders Squad had responded as part of an ongoing police operation related to an individual at the address wanted for arrest.

Two infringements in past year

Environment Canterbury is reminding Ashburton residents of the rules around outdoor burning following firefighters being called to a garden rubbish fire last weekend.

South Canterbury operations manager Judith Earl-Goulet said outdoor burning can be a nuisance for neighbours and add to air pollution caused by other sources such as home heating.

The Canterbury Air Regional Plan prohibits outdoor burning within clean air zones, however, on properties larger than two hectares burning can be done between September 1 and April 30.

“People have other options for their green waste disposal such as composting, mulching, using kerb-side collection services or visiting a transfer station,” Earl-Goulet said.

The air plan’s outdoor burning measures are based on property size, not location.

If you are on a property under two hectares, you cannot burn outdoors, even if you are in a rural area, with the exception of outdoor cooking such as barbecues.

A resource consent is needed for burning green waste on these properties, and outdoor burning is allowed in some exceptional

If you are on a property over two hectares, you can burn vegetation excluding standing crop residue, as well as paper, cardboard or

untreated wood. However, conditions must be met, including being 100 plus metres upwind and 50 plus metres in any other direction from neighbours.

The Air Plan provides a com-

prehensive list of what cannot be burnt, including tyres, plastic and tanalised wood.

“We receive a number of complaints across Canterbury that relate to burning. Where applica-

ble and confirmed, enforcement action is taken and may result in an infringement fine of between $300 to $1000.”

In the last 12 months there had been 29 reports of smoke from burning in the town of Ashburton.

In 15 of the cases, ECan provided education, while it submitted a written warning in one case and delivered two infringement fines in another.

“Of those customers provided with education, most were about burning the wrong sort of materials or wet wood. Reports of burning plastic are often confused with smouldering bark as it can give off a chemical-like smell.”

The infringements of $300 each were issued for one pollution event, which was due to 149 tyres being burnt with black billowing smoke.

“The site had a consent on it, so fines were issued to both the consent holder and the individual who lit the fire.”

Even if burning is allowed under ECan rules, people needed to be aware that Fire and Emergency New Zealand had their own restrictions and permitting requirements.

​In 44 years Gordon’s go H

e’s climbed power poles, licked stamps, fixed broken motors and now sits in the boss’ chair; during his 44 years on the payroll for EA Networks, Gordon Guthrie has done the lot.

It’s the only company he’s worked for, joining what was then the Ashburton Power Board as a 16-year-old electrical apprentice. With his 60th birthday looming, he’s decided the time is right to retire and step down as chief executive for what is now EA Networks.

Sixty might seem young to opt for retirement, Gordon said, but it’s the age he’d made a commitment to when he entered the workforce in 1976.

“When I started work this was when you retired and it became my long term goal. I’m fortunate, I have plenty to do with my spare time, I have a small farm and I’m looking forward to being a full time farmer for a while,” he said.

As a 16-year-old, Gordon took up a four year electrical apprenticeship but he had an interest in the electronic side and the radio side. He added study for his certificate of engineering to his workload, and an extra five years of extra-mural study.

Looking back Gordon admits he was probably reasonably ambitious, but studying was more about learning new things rather than chasing the boss’ job.

Over the years he moved up the ranks to become a test technician and then an engineering assistant and a marketing and trading manager before taking on the top job.

In his early days the company was known as the Ashburton Electric Power Board. It was a local authority and the business did everything from selling electrical appliances to doing household and motor repairs.

In the coming years that structure was to change dramatically as the electricity industry has changed with Ashburton splitting off its generation arm and selling this to Trustpower.

For 44 years Gordon Guthrie has worked for just one company, but early next year he’s retiring. He talks to reporter Sue Newman about his journey from 16-year-old apprentice with the Ashburton Power Board to the chief executive’s chair at EA Networks Ltd.

gone from boy to boss “By the end of this year the 66kV project will be near enough to being done,” he said.

There’ve been plenty of challenges, plenty of rewards and satisfaction over his 44 years with the company.

Among those was was winning a national award during his time as the company’s trading and marketing manager.

That was a real achievement for the company because they were up against every other power authority in the country, Gordon said.

Some of the memorable milestones were not necessarily good ones, however such as the fire in the Kermode Street building that destroyed the entire rear of the service area.

Weather is always a factor in the fortunes of electricity companies and over his years, Gordon’s battled through his share of weather related events – wind, snow, he’s seen it all.

“The 2006 snow was absolutely the worst. In some cases it took us three weeks to get power restored to people and it was sheer hard work. Windstorms are also very disruptive but with snow you have the problem of access and so it can take days sometimes just to get to some places.”

Restoring power to consumers was a long, hard exercise, but like any major outage, staff simply got on and got the job done, Gordon said.

“For me it’s always important to be there when things like this happen. We manage risk every day of the week, but at times it just scales up.”

The upside of that big snowfall was that the drive to underground power lines was stepped up, Gordon said.

“That’s almost completed in Ashburton and now it can snow as much as it likes in town because we’re much, much more resilient today.”

Gordon has maintained a strong interest and involvement in water – for power generation and for irrigation.

In 1982 when the Montalto scheme was coming on stream he was heavily involved in the design and build of equipment and he followed that with involvement in the Rangitata Diversion Race. And then came the purchase and later the sale of Highbank power station.

That sale came at the time Electricity Ashburton split off the generation arm of its business and it was also the time he stepped up as chief executive. It was a stressful time as the company was forced to reshape and adapt to its new role as a lines company.

“With our energy business sold, it was the contact with customers as a retailer that we lost and really missed,” he said.

Undergrounding was part of that project and while there are still many kilometres of above ground lines in rural areas, new on-farm connections are now all underground, creating much greater security in weather events, he said.

Maximum power demand has tripled over the past 10 years.

In recent years EA Networks has become the fibre network installer for many rural properties as it developed a network to its rural control boxes. It decided to

vide generation opportunities.

“We underwrote this for a few years because it was about economic development about being a catalyst and an enabler. I guess that’s in the company’s DNA.” Looking to the future, he believes there will be significant change in the way people use power, moving from being consumers to producers through the use of wind, solar or other generation methods.

This will be transformational and it will need to be carefully

managed, he said.

“We need to be the enablers, to help people manage this process sensibly. As a company we’ve never been frightened of innovation.”

The company relocated to the North East Business Park after the Canterbury earthquakes. It was a timely move, with the Kermode Street buildings becoming a rabbit warren of rooms that had been adapted and re-adapted for changing use.

“We were pretty disjointed and this was an opportunity.

The council had the foresight to develop this and we were able to become an anchor tenant.”

Gordon said he will remain a keen observer of developments in water management but is unsure how or if he’ll pick up any active involvement.

“I had a vision of technology playing a big part in water management and it’s happening now and I’d like to see water managed on a regional basis rather than by a lot of small schemes,” he said.

Retirement holds no fears for him as he knows he’s leaving the company when it has a great team of staff on board.

“We have a good history of people working their way up, of creating opportunities. You have

to allow people to progress. For me it’s the right time to hand this back to some of the younger ones who can made a real difference. It’s certainly an exciting time to be a young engineer.”

The company had been through significant change and significant growth over the past few decades and that had been aided by having strong and supportive people at governance level, Gordon said.

Retirement means his dogs Ollie and Oscar will see more of him – he won’t be constantly checking his watch while he takes them on their morning walk, and he’s hoping he’ll avoid getting under wife Debbie’s feet too much.

While he won’t be mucking out the stables, he reckons his horse trainer, Ben Waldron might see a bit more of him and his golf clubs might come out of retirement.

Walking away from a working lifetime with one company won’t be hard, he said.

“I’m pretty relaxed about everything and who knows what I’ll do, I’ve never been afraid to try something new and different.

The key to retirement is to think about it and plan it. Having plenty of things to do, that’s the absolute key.”

Payday lenders to be hit by changes

New Zealand’s payday lending market is likely to shrink substantially under proposals by the Government to introduce a daily interest rate cap of 0.8 per cent and highrisk borrowers could find themselves out of luck.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi announced on Tuesday the Government would add the cap to its proposals for overhauling the Credit Contracts Legislation Amendment Bill after submissions to the finance and expenditure select committee repeatedly called for an interest rate cap.

The cap is in addition to the proposal to limit interest and fees over the life of a loan to 100 per cent of the amount borrowed for high-cost lenders – those who charge interest of more than 50 per cent per annum.

New Zealand is an outlier in not having an interest rate cap with 25 out of 36 OECD countries having interest rate caps on highcost lending.

In 2015 the United Kingdom introduced a daily cap of 0.8 per cent. A report two years later by its regulator the Financial Conduct Authority found around two-thirds of companies dropped out of the payday lending market and the amount of money lent had dropped by more than 40 per cent.

“Throughout the legislative process we have strongly supported the Government’s efforts to improve consumer protection while maintaining financial inclusion across the community.

“We are deeply concerned that an interest rate cap on top of all the other protection measures will lead to financial exclusion for tens of thousands of New Zealanders who access short-term credit every day without any issue.”

White said it was also assessing what the proposed interest rate cap could mean to its employees and customers, if it was passed into law.

Cash Converters has around 400 staff across the country.

Another payday lender, Save my Bacon, said it was moving out of that area of the market.

Save My Bacon chief risk officer Neil Perkins, said it had moved away from payday loans to longer-term loans whose interest rates were below the proposed cap.

Asked about the impact of a rate cap on the industry Perkins said experience had shown that the number of loan providers reduced in the UK under similar measures.

“It is important that vulnerable consumers be protected and some companies will find these changes a challenge to manage.”

The bill is expected to pass later this year before coming into effect from March next year.

“Australia and the UK both have thriving payday lending markets.”

But she said there was a possibility some businesses would find they can’t operate within the proposed restrictions.

She said 0.8 per cent interest per day compounded was still a large amount. It was not unusual to find companies charging interest rates of 1.2 to 1.5 per cent a day and those companies would have to reduce their rates.

“But the big ones will manage.”

Stace said no one knew exactly how big the payday lending market was and she believed there were at least 30 companies operating in that space.

It would also reduce higher risk lending as the lower return would mean businesses couldn’t afford to have high default rates.

“One consequence is some people who are very bad risk borrowers won’t be able to get loans. Is that a good or bad thing? That is debatable.”

In many cases those people should not be going to payday lenders, she said.

The proposed change has left Cash Converters, one of New Zealand’s biggest payday lenders, assessing its position.

Erin White, national personal finance manager at Cash Converters, said it was disappointed the Government intended to introduce an interest rate cap.

he local NZX 50 index reached another all-time high this week, despite little on the domestic calendar with the reporting season now behind us and ongoing concerns for the global growth outlook.

At the time of writing, the benchmark index is up 4.8 per cent for the quarter, and up 25.0 per cent year-to-date.

Elsewhere, geopolitical issues remained in focus, namely Hong Kong, Britain and Italy, while the US and China agreed to meet in October for another round of trade negotiations.

Dairy prices have continued to decline at the latest Global Dairy Trade auction.

The headline index fell 0.4 per cent, easing for the seventh time in the past eight auctions. Whole milk powder slippped 0.8 per cent, anhydrous milk fat declined 1.5 per cent and the price of cheddar slipped 0.8 per cent. Rennet casein marked the biggest gain, up 4.6 per cent, butter milk powder rose 3.4 per cen, while the price of butter was unchanged.

The same day, Fonterra affirmed its current forecast payout for the 2020 season.

The dairy co-op maintained the current forecast range of $6.25 to $7.25 per kg of milksolids, and the Advanced Rate schedule, which is set off $6.75 per kg of milksolids.

The company said it is keeping an eye on international trade tensions, geopolitical risks and the continuing volatility in the price of dairy fat.

Fonterra is scheduled to announce its final 2018/19 Farmgate Milk Price as part of its annual result on September 12.

Across the Tasman, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) kept its cash rate unchanged at 1.0 per cent, following two 25 basis point cuts in June and July.

At its September meeting, the bank maintained a wait-and-see approach, however, markets are pricing in another two rate cuts by the end of the year.

RBA Governor Philip Lowe said Australia’s economic growth over the first half of 2019 had been “lower than earlier expected” with household consumption affected by a long period of low income growth and declining housing prices and turnover.

Separately, the Australian dollar dipped to a 10-year low on weak retail sales figures. Australia also recorded a current account surplus of $5.9b, its first surplus in 44 years, thanks to its iron ore and coal exports.

Investor sentiment was lifted on news that Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam was withdrawing an extradition bill that has triggered months of protests in the city. The proposed bill, introduced in April, would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China.

Opposition was widespread, claiming it would expose Hong Kongers to unfair trials and violent treatment.

They also argued that the bill

would give China greater influence over Hong Kong and could be used to target activists and journalists.

She said the protests had “shocked and saddened the Hong Kong people” and the violence was “pushing Hong Kong towards a highly dangerous situation”. On Monday, Lam was heard on leaked audio tapes blaming herself for starting the political crisis, saying it was unforgivable of her to cause such havoc.

Politics dominated the headlines in Europe this week. The British pound rose on Wednesday after the British parliament voted to prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson taking Britain out of the EU without a deal.

In Italy, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte unveiled a new cabinet that united the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and the centre-left Democratic party, an unlikely coalition that is expected to improve ties with the European Union.

Meanwhile, Christine Lagarde, who will likely be the European Central Bank’s (ECB) next president, sparked some doubt over the scale of an ECB stimulus package expected this week.

Lagarde said highly accommodative monetary policy for a prolonged period was necessary, but she added that the bank needed to be mindful of negative side-effects of such tools.

ew Zealand’s last surviving Mosquito fighter pilot Don Ivey died last month, leaving behind a logbook of dangerous wartime missions and a life of adventure. He was 97.

Donald Glenwyn Ivey learned to fly many airplanes during his years as a World War Two pilot, but he loved the fast Mosquitos which he flew on daring nighttime raids, at tree-top level, strategically dropping bombs on German targets.

His son Basil has a photo of a Gestapo headquarters, taken in a split-second by Ivey’s onboard camera after dropping a bomb that would destroy it. Ivey’s logbook, which details a lifetime of flying, is a precious resource of missions, many classified and secret.

Ivey achieved an A grade pilot’s licence and went on 65 missions, surviving when many of his peers did not. He was awarded a French Legion of Honour Medal in 2014, belated but deserved recognition for his skill and contribution to the liberation of France.

The young Ivey was working as a shepherd in the Ashley Gorge when he decided to volunteer as a wireless operator air gunner. He was not quite 18 and needed the signature of his sister to enlist, then later excelled in a navigator’s test, prompting the Royal New Zealand Air Force to offer him pilot training.

He made his first flight in a Tiger Moth at Taieri three days before Christmas, 1941, and not long after that found himself ordered to Canada. The trainee pilot learned to fly twin-Oxfords, Ansons and Cessna Cranes; single-engine Cornells and Harvards and Ivey logged up the hours, most solo.

He flew another 500 hours ferrying aircraft made in eastern Canada to Winnipeg, where they were distributed to training schools. Toronto was a production centre for the de Havilland Mosquito and Ivey eventually was posted to Nova Scotia to fly the hot, new machines.

When Ivey discovered he could roll a Mossie in level flight, over and over, he fell in love.

He was paired with his navigator Flight Sergeant Curly Waterer and the pair went on to survive 65 missions together, not always harmoniously. They set sail for the war and Ivey’s first flight in Europe was a night intruder course.

A deerstalker and an intuitive marksman, he enjoyed employing the Mosquito armament, which included machine-guns and cannons; with the Mossies travelling up to 380 miles an hour, it took a special skillset to hit a target moving at that speed.

1500 feet at 15 minutes past midnight, Ivey released four bombs. A pair of searchlights answered him but they made it safely home.

The pair nearly died 21 days later. They were detailed to attack Gilze Rijen airfield and found it easily. What happened next is Ivey’s account in the book, Through to the End: “There was a great fire going on. I went over it once and came back. In the glare of whatever it was burning – it might have been an aircraft, I don’t know – I could see this great big hangar. So I thought that was where to dump my load. I went around and came back, and told my navigator to put the switches on. There was Safe and Live and also you put the master switch on, so that when you pressed the tit on the control column, those bombs went.

“I went screaming down at high speed and pulled out, and nothing went. The bloody navigator, he hadn’t turned on the switch to arm the bombs. And the Mossie was so fast, it got up to 350 in moments as soon as you got into a dive; it didn’t give you much time to make up your mind what you were going to do. I hauled up in a zoom. They upped with the searchlights and the flak was whipping past.

“I had bugger-all speed, I almost stalled.

I didn’t know where I was. Lights were shining in my eyes and there were explo-

sions all around. What happened was, when I went up, all my gyro instruments toppled and I had nothing to go by. You had to wait two to three minutes before they started coming back in again. All I had was the ASI. It was only by the pressure of the straps on my shoulders and no pressure under my backside that I realised I was upside down. I rolled her back out and shoved the stick forward, because the speed was just draining off from the extra weight of the bombs.

“I told the navigator to fire the colours of the day. We were given the German colours. You weren’t supposed to use them except in extreme emergency. We had all sorts of information that we never knew where it came from. I told the navigator to fire the cartridge in the ceiling. But he didn’t. He just said: ‘What happened, boss?’

“We were still held by the searchlights, tracer everywhere, but I couldn’t do anything until she started to come back, and that’s when I gave him the order the second time. I should have pulled out my bloody pistol and shot him. I had to bloody tell him a second time. As soon as we fired that, everything stopped. It was like magic.

They thought we were one of theirs. I told him, too: You’re blood lucky I didn’t shoot you.”

The pair went on over the months to patrol roads and railways, dropping bombs

by night and wreaking havoc on the Jerries.

As part of the 487 Squadron, he took part in operational sorties as part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force during D-Day, flying missions in support of the invasion.

In an interview with the Guardian 10 years ago, Ivey said he flew over France, Germany, Holland, Denmark and Luxembourg. These were low-level night raids into enemy territory and it was high risk flying and dangerous work.

Often they flew in dense cloud, sneaking under the German radar. At times, the concentration required was so intense, a glance at the radar could be sufficient distraction to send a plane into the waters of the English Channel.

It could be lonely work, missions under cover of darkness, with German fire streaking the night.

Not every aircraft made it out. His last mission saw 15 aircraft complete a low-level operation into Germany – five didn’t make it home that night and Ivey called it quits after that and returned to New Zealand.

He bought a farm at Ruapuna, started courting Mary and married, having Basil and Sue, who became a primary school teacher and now lives in Australia.

Ivey took his no-nonsense approach to life into farming and developing the property.

He was an active member of the Mayfield community and loved to play golf, fish and hunt. He enjoyed driving to Christchurch International Airport and watching the planes take off and land. He was a patron of the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

Ivey had been at Rosebank for nearly 10 years prior to his death.

Basil, a farmer too, said his father’s photographic memory was useful in the war. He could see a map and knew exactly where he was in the air, even at night.

He was last at the controls of an airplane at the age of 86, when he flew in a Cessna up to Erewhon, flying over the old family home at Mesopotamia.

Basil said his father’s wartime memorabilia made for interesting reading and he had been part of Operation Clarion in 1945, an Allied bombing campaign which targeted 200 German communication network targets in the spring of that year.

He was amongst the top Mosquito pilots of the time though many of his wartime deeds have not seen the light of day. His plane of choice, the de Havilland Mosquito, was the best aircraft of its era. It was a versatile, agile fighter-bomber, a wooden-built aircraft that was the fastest in the world at the time.

The man and machine were wellmatched.

Sport is about fun, but also life learning S

ome of the biggest organisations in sport are stepping up to the plate and looking to change the way New Zealand perceives the key targets of sport when it comes to children.

With a focus on bringing more enjoyment to the game and taking some attention away from the winning mantra that we seem to live by, Sport NZ, New Zealand Cricket, NZ Football, Hockey NZ and Netball NZ have identified a growing problem and come together to try and fix it.

The method behind it is valid, but there needs to be careful consideration to the approach that’s taken because, while on face value it might look a sim-

ple thing to fix, there’s a lot of different opinions out there on just how big a role sport plays in moulding young minds.

When I was a youngster, I wanted to play as much sport as I possibly could.

My poor mother would be carting me from one sport to another six days a week, travelling from Methven to Ashburton so I could play games of basketball

and indoor bowls while other days of the week consisted of rugby, football or cricket training and then, of course, Saturdays were for competing.

And when I stepped out on a Saturday, no matter what the sport was, or what age I was, I was there to win and do my best.

Sometimes we were successful and sometimes we lost, that was just part of playing sport.

You rolled with the punches and celebrated when you won and commiserated when you lost. Did it have an ever-lasting impact on me if we won or lost?

Absolutely not.

Looking back now those ebbs and flows helped me and, I’m sure, many of my peers,

learn that not everything in life happens the way you want it to.

They were good things to learn, because, as we all know, that’s exactly how the world works.

My parents never pushed me to play sport. They didn’t have to.

I wanted to be out there doing things with my friends and I wanted to be the best, so therefore tried my hardest to make every representative team available. Again, sometimes it worked and then other times it didn’t.

I would be elated or disappointed all over again, but eventually got over it and vowed to work harder to either repeat the outcome, or change it if it wasn’t

favourable.

There is, of course, some merit behind the discussions that are taking place this week around children in sport and the expectations being put on them to be successful and some pretty big sporting names have come out and backed the cause.

Good on them too, but I do wonder whether some of them would have achieved what they have in sport, or be in the position – with the respect they’ve earned – to even make such comments if it hadn’t been for the way that sport was viewed when they were youngsters.

Imagine if Jeff Wilson hadn’t played multiple sports and been pushed to succeed in them.

Ten years ago: Three British Muslims were convicted in London of plotting to murder thousands by downing at least seven airliners bound for the US and Canada.

Five years ago: The head of the Arab League, Nabil Elaraby, urged members to confront Islamic State extremists “militarily

and politically”. A star-studded funeral was held in New York for comedian Joan Rivers, who had died three days earlier at age 81.

One year ago: President Donald Trump, citing national security, called on the Justice Department to investigate and unmask the author of a critical New York Times opinion piece purportedly written by a member of an administration “resistance” movement.

“Well done Jacinda for putting your hand up. It’s not a surprise you are the class leader because everyone just loves your friend Clarke and his fishing stories.

You can have a sticker and 10 house points. Now, what feedback have you got Jacinda?”

“Good morning class. JamiLee – can you hear me down the back? Ok it doesn’t matter if you can’t. Now, as you know, a while ago I took all the bad sticks away from the boys because someone whom I won’t name did something really bad with one. Well now I’m going to start a stick club, so if you want to have a stick, then you have to join my club,” said Jacinda.

“Also, some of the boys who play on the big field have been doing wees. And then I found out that those wees go into the ground and come back up our drinking fountains, so I’m going to make them do wees in a toilet.

And if they want to start a new game of doing wees – well they can’t. That’s going to happen soon.”

“Oh miss, hey miss pick me, pick me!” shouts Jami-Lee from the back.

“Ahh Jami-Lee, how many times have I said put your hand up first, don’t call out. Trevor, can you take 10 points off JamiLee’s house for calling out. Okay, who has their hand up and wants to give feedback?” asks Mrs Taxpayer again.

She chooses Simon who has been trying to poke Jacinda.

“Right Simon, what is your feedback for the class?”

“Well, I think I should be class leader because I want to reduce the amount of maths and spelling we have to do,” Simon says.

The class cheers, this sounds like a great idea, but Mrs Taxpayer simply sighs.

“Simon, this sounds just like an idea your big brother John had, when he was in my class and was class leader.

“He promised he would reduce our maths if he was elected, but it never happened.

In fact every time before a class vote he said that. He also prom-

ised to not increase the amount of PST (Playground Standing Time – a time penalty for using the playground) but he did that after the first time he was class leader.

“Judith – give that car to me now! Yes Phil, what is it?” Mrs Taxpayer asks with a creeping tone of frustration in her voice.

“Mrs Taxpayer, Judith broke my hut and she’s being mean to me!”

“Is this true Judith? Did you break his hut?”

“Well he promised he could build 10 by the end of the year and he hasn’t even built one properly.

“All I did was borrow a stick so I could join the stick club and his stupid hut fell down. Not my fault he doesn’t know how to build huts – he shouldn’t make promises he can’t keep.”

“Alright Judith,” says Mrs Taxpayer.

“I think you can play with Megan for the rest of the week and Phil you can have a turn with the play money after morning tea.

“Now does anyone else have some feedback? Thank you JamiLee for putting your hand up, what do you want to say?”

“Well last year Simon told me he was getting lollies from that new Chinese kid in Room 12 and that we can’t tell anyone ’cos you’re not allowed lollies at school and then there was this one time at camp when

four girls said they like me but then there was this one time my friend Craig, oh hang on was it David, I don’t know, it was one of the boys with no friends, well they think that aliens live in the smoke from planes and then there...”

“Jami-Lee, how many times have I told you not to make up stories. Now sit down at the back and play by yourself.

“Lord knows I can’t wait until you go to Intermediate,” says a very exasperated Mrs Taxpayer.

“Marama – is there something you want to say, you have been waiting so patiently with your hand up.”

“Thank you Mrs Taxpayer, well actually, some friends of mine had a really good idea that anyone can be anyone and no-one can say anyone can’t be anyone and here is a special tomato plant biscuit for your morning tea Mrs Taxpayer.”

“Ah, ok class, I think I have had enough feedback, I’m going to the staffroom, you lot can play Promises Are Meant to Be Broken and Simon you can have a go at being in charge seeing as Jacinda is tired from her trip to Tokelau.”

The origin of life, maybe it’s simpler than we think

oday one of the big questions. How did life on this planet begin?

There is no agreement among scientists.

Over 100 years ago Charles Darwin imagined a small warm pool where molecules came together to form a cell. The cells then produced some slithering creature which eventually became us.

The chemistry of that process is unknown.

Under perfect laboratory conditions there is no progress to making the molecules.

Maybe the answer is more simple.

We do not know how to build the simplest bacterium.

Simplest is really the wrong word. That bacterium has 256 protein coding genes.

The complexity of the cell is mind boggling and has been likened to the complexity of the universe.

There are many questions unanswered.

Where did the information in the DNA come from?

Where did the first spark come from?

Maybe the answer is more simple.

Text books still teach the theory of the pond.

In the 1950s experiments were done to try and replicate the early conditions.

These were called the Miller Urey experiments and they produced some amino acids, but very little on the path to producing a living cell.

Since then there have been many theories and many experiments, but still science does not know how life on earth started. Maybe the answer is more simple.

Going back a step, how did the universe start?

The most widely accepted theory is that 14 billion years ago a Big Bang started the universe.

Many questions.

What was before the Big Bang?

According to speakers on YouTube there was NOTHING! The mental gymnastics to reach this conclusion is also mind-boggling.

It seems unscientific, but sup-

posed wisdom, is used to confuse us. Repeated telling seems to make it true.

Maybe the answer is more simple.

A few years back a man walked on the Earth and it was said of him that “without him nothing was made that is made”.

Maybe the answer is that simple.

Tempura NZ greenshell mussels 24 New Zealand and Greenshell Mussels, half shell 2T fish sauce 1 lime (juice and zest) 2T minced garlic 3T minced fresh ginger 3T chopped fresh coriander 3T finely minced spring onions 2T tom yum paste 3C tempura flour Ice cold water Oil, for frying Sesame aioli 250g well cooked potato (allow to cool before use) 3T lemon juice 2t minced garlic 1T minced ginger 1/2 t finely minced red chilli 3 egg yolks 3T soy (light) 2T sesame oil 250ml vegetable oil Salt and pepper, as needed Garnish Lime wedges

■■ Trim the mussels, removing any fibrous tissue from inside the mussel cavity.

■■ In a bowl, mix the fish sauce and lime juice and zest with the garlic, ginger, coriander, spring onions and tom yum paste. Add the mussels and turn to coat.

Marinate for an hour or so.

■■ Make the tempura batter, by placing two cups of tempura flour in a bowl and add enough iced water to make a thin batter.

Do not over mix, a few lumps are OK. ■■ Heat a fryer or pan of oil for frying. Quickly toss the mussels in the remaining cup of tempura flour and then coat in the tempura batter.

■■ Quickly fry, then place on a paper towel to drain.

■■ Sesame aioli: In a mixer, put in the potato and mash well. Add the lemon juice, garlic, ginger, chilli, egg yolks and soy, and mix well.

■■ Gradually add the oils, a little at a time and season to taste.

■■ To serve: Serve the fried mussels with the aioli and a wedge of lime.

■■ Note: Use a mixer for this, not a food processor as this will make the potato go tough and gluey.

AN EYE ON THE FUTURE

The hockey season might be over, but that does not mean that Mid Canterbury Hockey’s coaching and development officer Laura Kingsmill is not already planning a busy schedule of hockey for the next 12 months.

Kingsmill was appointed to the role around four months ago and has a stack of experience behind her from coaching and playing in South Australia.

“I have been playing since I was

five in Australia and have coached everything from four-year-olds to A-grade men’s hockey and some South Australia teams, and I have represented South Australia at youth level,” she said.

Kingsmill, who moved to New Zealand late in 2017, has a few clear goals on what she wants to achieve with hockey in the district.

They include increasing participation, working with coaches, developing talented youngsters’ skills and making it accessible for

Mid Canterbury Hockey’s coaching and development officer Laura Kingsmill has been in the role for around four months and has big goals for the association.

“For a small association, there are some talented kids and some really passionate coaches,” she said.

A number of programmes have already been rolled out by Kingsmill, who is not planning on slowing down just because the season is finished.

“In the last school holidays we

ran our first holiday clinic,” she said.

“We hope to get as many players and non-players along to those.

“There is also a keep on hockeying programme for kids that wanted to keep playing even though the season is over.

“I am also hoping to do a lot of work with coaches before next season.”

Kingsmill said a big focus was ensuring the sport was accessible for everyone.

“It is about making it seem like it is a sport were you can come in at any age and start playing,” she said.

Hansen has a big nut to crack NZME On Monday morning, the All Blacks will leave for Tokyo and a short training camp in Kashiwa, about 50km northwest of the Japanese capital, carrying the World Cup hopes of a nation and one or two strategies about how to break what will likely be a cloying defence in the knockout matches.

The British & Irish Lions provided the template in 2017 and Ireland, England, Wales and South Africa in particular have recently shown how hard they can be to get through or past.

In the near claustrophobic pressure of the sudden-death matches starting next month, creating one or two opportunities, and, crucially, finishing them, will be the difference between progressing and going home.

Four years ago in the United Kingdom, the All Blacks built slowly during the pool matches (after surviving a scare against Argentina), by refusing to reveal their full repertoire of attacking tricks.

“Full menu” is what coach Steve Hansen described it then, and much of it revolved around their kicking game.

Nothing was off the table once the All Blacks faced France in the quarter-final in Cardiff, however, and that contrived to blow the French off the Millennium Stadium pitch, although the excitement of playing in a sudden-death match almost certainly contributed to that far higher level of performance from Hansen’s men.

The defensive strategies of top international teams have improved significantly since, with line speed a big part of that, but

Hansen believes the tide will turn.

And yes, he is confident his side have the players and strategies to play a part in that attacking renaissance – to “crack the nut”, he called it – in Japan.

“We’ve certainly got some talented people,” Hansen said in Hamilton this week.

“Our game is about using the ball and using a triple-threat game.

“That’s the thing that pleased me the most about the Aussie game [at Eden Park recently]. We kicked well and ran and passed well.

“We did those three things really well; you can’t just do one.

“The kicking game is about shaping the defensive line and if you’ve got a poor kicking game then the defence doesn’t have to worry about it.

“If you’ve got a sharp kicking game then they have to re-adjust how they want to defend and that might create a bit more space.”

Hansen added: “I think there’s definitely been a swing or bias towards defence.

“Because of that then everyone thinks we [top internation-

al teams] are closer than we probably really are. But someone’s going to crack that nut – the defensive nut that needs to be cracked – because history tells us that will happen.

“When it does then it will open up the floodgates for the attacking game to become strong again and everyone will say there’s a bias towards the attacking game and they will go away and work harder on defence.

“That’s been the nature of the game – toing and froing – for a long, long time.

“I’m looking forward to that nut being cracked.”

It doesn’t take a genius to assume the use of Richie Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett as dual playmakers, a ball-playing pack, a variety of kicking options and an up-tempo game plan will provide the basis of the All Black nutcracking strategy.

Neither would it surprise to see a game plan against Tonga at Waikato Stadium today consisting of solely catch, pass, and intelligent running lines.

And while the South Africa game on September 21 is looming as potentially the most pivotal World Cup pool match they have played, the question is not whether they will attempt to change things up during the tournament, but when.

It’s possible the All Blacks will attempt to beat the Boks with a ruthless adherence to the basics while keeping one or two things under wraps.

The same will apply for the other pool games against Canada, Namibia and Italy.

Hansen was asked this week: Can you crack the nut?

“Hope so,” he replied.

Pressed, he said: “I think so, yeah.”

Don’t be fooled by his reticence; Hansen is confident he has the right men and plans to make life difficult for any team they play over the next few months.

Confidence in the World Cup whistlemen at an all-time low

T

he red card shown to Scott Barrett in Perth last month is haunting a number of international coaches.

There’s more than a few worried that the World Cup is going to be needlessly ruined or turned upside down by a pool of referees, many would see as the weakest in decades, who are led by a World Rugby officiating executive that has frankly lost the plot.

If there is one single decision that explains the universal nervousness and lack of faith in World Rugby’s ability to ensure fair and consistent refereeing at this World Cup, it is surely the fact that Jerome Garces and Romain Poite are among the 12 referees going to Japan.

The two Frenchmen have never had to answer for the unfathomable business in the last minutes of the 2017 series with the British and Irish Lions, which saw Poite wrongly consult the TMO then ignore his advice anyway to overturn a match-winning penalty to the All Blacks and instead award a scrum.

To make matters yet more confusing was that Garces, who was the assistant referee, persuaded Poite to change his mind and did so by saying: “We have a deal, we have a deal ...”

Yet these two have been rewarded for that with a place at the

World Cup and Garces has been given arguably the biggest pool match of the tournament – New Zealand versus South Africa.

It wasn’t the first time Poite had ruined a test at Eden Park, for in 2013 he sent off Springboks hooker Bismarck du Plessis, having wrongly shown him a first yellow card for a legitimate tackle on Dan Carter.

That decision was immediately overturned after the game and World Rugby apologised to the South Africans, but while Poite was cast into the wilderness for a short period after, he has found his way back into the fold.

Refereeing appointments, however, are only the tip of the iceberg, in regards to World Rugby’s chaotic decision-making.

It’s not just that there are bad eggs in the mix, it’s the lack of clarity about how the laws will be applied which is the unifying fear among coaches.

Squads picked, bags all but packed and the first World Cup game less than two weeks away, this should be a time of optimism, excitement and hope for all those heading to Japan.

But inside the management teams of the serious contenders, none of those emotions exist because they are all fearful that red cards and insanely inconsistent decision-making by officials are going to be what defines this World Cup. Coaches will never be perfectly

aligned with officials.

They will never see the game in exactly the same way, but no one can remember a time when the expectations of those coaching and playing have been so far removed from those officiating.

They are so far apart because players and coaches want a game where they can contest physically without fear of recrimination should there be obviously unintended collateral damage.

World Rugby, though, has empowered its referees to not make the distinction between intended and unintended if it involves the head, and has also lacked the conviction or desire to ensure they all uniformly take that stance.

The heavyweight nations have been aghast at what they have seen in the past eight weeks.

Barrett was red-carded but Ireland’s Devin Toner wasn’t penalised for an almost identical offence against Wales last week.

Two Welsh players Aled Davies and Ross Moriarty escaped any sanction for head-high contacts against English players in their test at Twickenham, yet French lock Paul Gabrillagues was red-carded and banned for six weeks when he cleaned out a ruck against Scotland in what appeared to be a legitimate means but connected with someone’s head.

Australia were guilty of 17 neck rolls when they beat the All

Blacks and not one was penalised and Jerome Garces didn’t award even a penalty when RG Snyman dislocated Brodie Retallick’s shoulder from an offside position in Wellington.

None of it makes sense.

None of it gives players or coaches any confidence that this World Cup will be determined by what they do, but will instead hinge on the entirely unpredictable actions of the referees in charge who have been given vague and ambiguous guidance on what is expected.

Seeing what they have in recent weeks, every international coach is now convinced that referees will determine who wins this World Cup and they all expect red cards will be shown in record numbers and most likely for offences that were accidental.

And the fact that rival coaches are all on the same page is perhaps the greatest clue as to how bad things are.

When Barrett was red-carded, first Wallabies coach Michael Cheika expressed empathy for the player – suggesting that he didn’t support the decision but knew why it had been made.

A day later and England coach Eddie Jones went much further, calling it ridiculous and pleading for common sense to be applied.

There’s something not right when the Wallabies and England are jumping to the defence of the All Blacks.

But there is solidarity in the ranks because coaches all know the difference between foul play with intent and collisions that have unintended consequences as a result of late changing body positions and other unforeseen circumstances.

The picture becomes increasingly not less confusing the nearer the World Cup gets and most baffling of all has been the reluctance to deal with the increased volume of neck rolling that has crept back into the game.

World Rugby is determined to protect players’ heads but not their spines, apparently. One hint of a head collision and a red card could come out, but put someone in danger of being paralysed and no official can see a problem.

Ask the players about what really concerns them and it’s that – being gripped around the neck and shifted with their spinal cord dangerously vulnerable.

Sam Cane spoke about this recently, saying: “Referees have dropped off neck rolls a little bit.

They were hard on that at the [last] World Cup, but it has crept in a wee bit. Every now and again you are at the breakdown and someone gets you around the neck and you have that second of ‘oh jeepers what is going to happen here?’”

And “oh jeepers what is going to happen here?” may as well as be the universal credo for this World Cup.

History on Hammers’ side

Mid Canterbury headed across the Southern Alps yesterday with history on their side for their third round clash in rugby’s Heartland Championship.

But in a traditionally tight competition, you can’t read too much into history, and Mid Canterbury coach Dale Palmer knows his side is going to be up against it when they take on the West Coast in Greymouth this afternoon.

“They are top of the table and they are going to be very strong, particularly at home,” Palmer said.

Mid Canterbury have only lost to the West Coast four times since sides from the two rugby regions first met in 1927, but they go into today’s latest clash as firm underdogs.

West Coast currently sit at the top of the competition leaderboard thanks to wins over King Country and Horowhenua-Kapiti, while Mid Canterbury are mid-table after starting with a loss to Horowhenua-Kapiti in round one and then beating East Coast in Ruatoria last weekend.

Palmer is under no illusions that his side is standing at the bottom of a hill, but also knows that if his side can pick up a win today it will be a tremendous confidence boost which will set them up well for the weeks ahead.

Today’s Mid Canterbury side features a few changes from the opening couple of rounds, some due to injury, and others due to a desire to rotate and look after players.

The front row remains the same as last week, while in the loose forwards Seta Koroitamana returns to the fray after turning out for the New Zealand Heartland XV against Samoa last weekend, and Tevita Ula also returns to start in place of Tom Blyth.

Tyler Blackburn gets his second start in a row at halfback, while Manasa Bari will start on the wing in place of Timoci Nabakeke, after an impressive showing off the bench against East Coast.

On the bench are two former Celtic players who headed north to test their skills in the

Christchurch premier competition this season – Joel Leo and Brian Matoramusha.

Leo is an up-and-comer who made last year’s New Zealand Heartland Under-19 team, while Zimbabwean speedster Brian Matoramusha was Mid Canterbury’s leading try-scorer in the 2018 Heartland Championship, and both come into the side as loan players following strong performances for Mid Canterbury A over the past couple of weeks.

Angus Lindsay also drops back to the bench to provide loose forward cover along with Ataata Langilangi, while Adam Williamson, Cory Sinclair and Inoke Tonga retain their spots on the bench.

Palmer said West Coast coach Sean Cuttance has built up a strong core of players in recent seasons and this year the Coasters look to have a particularly big forward pack, so Mid Canterbury don’t want to get into a tussle with them close to the ruck.

Instead, they headed to West Coast keen to throw the ball around and give their backline a chance to shine on what’s likely to be a fine and dry Greymouth day.

“From what we can see they’ve got some really good players in key positions – eight, 12, 10 and 15.

“They’ve got a 10 and 15 who are able to kick the ball around the park really well, and their really strong ball carriers are their eight and 12,” Palmer said.

Mid Canterbury are similar though, with new Dunedin-based loan player Corey McKay proving to have a strong kicking game, and second-five Nete Caucau one of the side’s goto ball carriers.

“It’s going to be a great contest.

“They have been playing similar rugby to us and we are excited about the game,” Palmer said.

In other matches today, the only other unbeaten team after two rounds – North Otago – are away to Poverty Bay, while South Canterbury will be looking for their second win when they play host to Horowhenua-Kapiti.

Wanganui are the surprise team not to have picked up a win after two rounds, and today they’re away to Buller, while the other winless team so far – East Coast – are away to Thames Valley.

Wairarapa Bush will host King Country in the day’s remaining clash.

Logan World Champs-bound Former Mount Hutt College student Logan Currie is ready to take on some of the world’s best at the World Road Cycling Championships later this month.

Currie will be representing New Zealand in the Under-19 individual time trial and the 150km road race in Yorkshire on September 23 and 27 respectively.

Currie is currently a Year 13 student at Christchurch Boys’ High School, and is currently in Belgium, cycling for a professional continental team for eight weeks.

From there he will head to Harrogate in Yorkshire to stay with the NZ cycling team, which includes elite cyclists that have been cycling in such races as Tour de France and Giro D’Italia.

Cycling was not even Currie’s main focus at the end of last year, with his focus changing from triathlons to cycling after finding success at the national secondary school level.

Currie has enjoyed success nationally in both road and track cycling while competing for Canterbury and Transport Engineering VeloSouth in the Calder Stewart Series, in which he currently holds the Under-19 leader’s jersey.

He has been following a strict training programme set by coach Terry Gyde, often cycling up to 600km out on the open road each week.

In April, he surprised everyone by winning the National Individual TT by over a minute.

The TT race it is being broadcast on Sky sport late on the 23 September.

Logan Currie will swap out his Canterbury colours for the silver fern at the World Road Cycling Championships later this month.

Williams to face Andreescu in US Open final AP By no means was Serena Williams perfect at the start of her US Open semi-final.

She faced three break points in the opening game and managed to pull it out.

She trailed 40-love in the second, then came through again.

Another trio of break points arrived later in that initial set.

Once more, Williams was up to the task.

Soon enough, she was on her way to yet another final at Flushing Meadows – and yet another shot at Grand Slam singles trophy No. 24.

Williams turned in an increasingly impressive performance for a 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 5-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine at Arthur Ashe Stadium yesterday, reaching her fourth final in the past six major tournaments.

“To be in yet another final, it seems, honestly, crazy,” Williams said.

“But I don’t really expect too much less.”

Nor does anyone else at this point.

“That’s why she is who she is.

You are playing in front of the best tennis player in the world,” Svito-

lina said. “If you don’t take it, she just grabs it.

“And there’s no chance to take it back.”

Since returning to the tour last season after more than a year away while having a baby, she was the runner-up at Wimbledon twice, losing to Angelique Kerber in 2018 and to Simona Halep in July, and was also the runner-up, of course, a year ago at the US Open, losing to Naomi Osaka.

That one in New York was, and forever will be, overshadowed

by Williams’ extended argument with chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who docked her a point, then a game – and was barred by the US Tennis Association from officiating any matches her or her older sister, Venus, played in this year’s tournament.

Asked whether she prefers to find motivation from that final against Osaka or would rather forget it, Williams stared straight ahead and replied, “I mean, it hasn’t really crossed my mind.”

So much of what Williams does nowadays must be seen through the prism of tennis history, and that is certainly the case in this instance.

By getting to the final, Williams set a mark for longest gap between first career Grand Slam

title match and most recent such appearance: It’s almost exactly 20 full years since she won the 1999 US Open as a teenager.

Most importantly, if she can beat No. 13 Belinda Bencic or No. 15 Bianca Andreescu in Saturday’s final, Williams will equal Margaret

Court with 24 Grand Slam singles titles, more than anyone else in a sport that dates to the 1800s.

Court, though, won more than half of hers against amateur competition before professionals were allowed to play in majors starting in 1968.

This was Williams’ 38th Grand Slam semi-final, just the second for the 24-year-old Svitolina.

If it wasn’t as lopsided a performance as Williams put forth in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maria Sharapova in the first round or a 6-1, 6-0 win over Wang Qiang in a 44-minute quarter-final, it was pretty dialled-in.

Williams’ assessment?

“Today was solid,” she said. “It definitely wasn’t my best tennis.”

Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu has reached the final in her US Open debut by beating No. 13 seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 7-6 (3), 7-5 yesterday.

The 19-year-old Andreescu is appearing in only her fourth Grand Slam tournament.

She had never been past the second round at a major.

Andreescu is the first woman to reach the final in her first appearance in the main draw at Flushing Meadows since Williams’ older sister, Venus, did it in 1997.

Golfers make the cut When Aorangi take on Canterbury in a representative golf match later this month, a large number of Mid Canterbury players will be hitting the fairways.

The Aorangi teams for the clash have been named this week, and of the 28 players named 16 of them come from Mid Canterbury golf clubs, with each of the district’s five clubs having at least one player make the cut.

The Ashburton Golf Club will host the rep match on September 22, with men’s, women’s masters and junior teams from the two golfing areas set to go head-to-head.

Timaru players dominate the men’s side, with five of the eight

players selected hailing from the city, but Ashburton has two players in the mix – Josh Smith and Jeff Hewitt – while Rakaia’s Cameron Grant has also been included.

But the men’s masters team is particularly Mid Canterbury heavy, with six of the eight players coming from three different local clubs.

Nigel Heney, Regan Stills and John Smitheram – who all play their golf out of the Tinwald Golf Club – are in the side, along with Ashburton’s Blair Franklin and Robbie Bell, while Mayfield’s Andrew Peck has also been included just weeks after adding his latest club championship crown to his collection.

For the women, three players from the Ashburton Golf Club will feature.

Former professional Catherine Knight is in the team, along with fellow Ashburton players Sharon Bradford and Vicki Moore, and Methven’s Angela Mowbray.

The four-strong junior boys’ team is also dominated by Ashburton players, with Josh Ackerley, Hiromune Kakeda and Wilson Hii in there, along with Pleasant Point’s Alex Keliher.

Batting isn’t supposed to be this easy.

Not at any level, but certainly not in the pressure cooker of test cricket.

But while the rest of his teammates and the majority of the English team scratch and scramble for every run this summer, Steve Smith is scoring hundreds like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

The Aussie cricket star scored his third century in four innings this Ashes series as he continued to torment England in a way we haven’t seen since the days of Don Bradman.

Then he inflicted even more pain on the hapless hosts by doubling his tally to reach 200.

Smith scored 211 to make it the third time in his career he’s reached the stunning milestone – each of which have come against England.

A clip for two through the leg side just before lunch on day two of the fourth Ashes test in Manchester brought up Smith’s 26th test century and a similar shot took him to 200 a few hours later as he continued on his remarkable return to the five-day format after his year-long ban for Australia’s ball-tampering scandal.

Smith’s insatiable appetite for runs was on show again at Old Trafford as he battled howling winds on day one and a determined English attack on day two to reach a milestone that would be extraordinary for most, but is simply routine for the former Australia captain.

Smith’s 26th century came in his 121st test innings.

Only Bradman has scored that number of hundreds in fewer knocks as Smith got there quicker than legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar.

Smith has scored 11 tons against the old enemy while Bradman got to three figures against England 19 times.

Close finishes feature of schools’ tournament games Ashburton College’s senior girls’ basketballers have followed up a tense first win, with a loss in their first play-off match in Nelson.

Playing in the 2019 Schick Premiership AA zone four tournament, the Ashburton girls found themselves in the 9th to 16th playoffs after finishing third in their pool.

In game one the Ashburton College girls had taken on Rangiora, and it was a close game with the Ashburton side leading for most of the first half, but they eventually went down 68-51.

For the Ashburton side Sophie Adams came to play with 26 points and 19 rebounds.

Game two was another loss, in what was a bruising encounter with Rangi Ruru, and that meant the Ashburton College girls had to go all out in game three against Papanui High School.

A tight match started with some early foul trouble meaning Adams had to sit out most of the first half, with Ella Pearson already out most of the game due to injury.

But the bench rose to the challenge and moved the ball well allowing Samantha Tuck and Mae Patterson to each score 10 points to add to Adams’ 21, while Julie Mushonga came up with 17 rebounds and several forced turnovers.

Ashburton College were down by 10 with two minutes to go, but fought back hard, allowing the girls to secure a last-second twopoint win as the buzzer sounded. It made the final score 61-59 and saw their side finish third in a tough pool.

Yesterday they took on Avonside Girls’ in their first game in the ninth to 16th section and lost 60-44.

Meanwhile, at the boys’ tournament, Ashburton College’s senior boys went down in a close one 8481 yesterday morning, which saw them finish fourth in their pool and also go into the play-offs for ninth to 16th, where they were

to play Christchurch Boys’ High School yesterday afternoon.

Moving over to football and the Gary Sowden Tournament in Timaru, Ashburton College’s girls’ first XI football side finished 13th after a tense final game on Thursday.

They took on Mountainview High School in the play-off for 13th and a penalty shoot out was required, after the two sides were locked at 1-all Ashburton College won the shoot-out 3-1.

Sapphire Kururangi was named as Ashburton College’s most valuable player from the tournament.

Meanwhile, on the hockey turf, the Ashburton College boys’ first

XI were playing off in the bottom three section at the Johnson Cup in Invercargill yesterday. They took on Waimea College in their last game of the tournament and won 2-0, with the win being sealed by first-quarter goals to Ethan Walsh and Jonty Small.

At the Jenny McDonald Cup tournament in Cromwell, the Ashburton College girls’ first XI were due to play off for fifth place against Taeri College late yesterday.

And in Ashburton, at the Coaches Cup, the Ashburton College boys’ second XI took on Gore’s St Peter’s College in the play-off for fifth and lost 4-0.

Telegraph on the radar NZME Last season’s New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Emily Margaret will kick off her season in the gavelhouse.com Open Handicap (1000m) at Riccarton today.

The Kevin and Pam Hughestrained mare won four of her 11 starts last term, including the Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m), Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1400m), and Gr.2 Wellington Guineas (1400m).

“I was very pleased with her last season,” Kevin Hughes said.

“She was very brave and getting that Group Two was the icing on the cake.

“To win Filly of the Year down here too was great.

“She did very well.”

While her Group Two victory at Trentham was a highlight in her

three-year-old season, Hughes is eyeing a return to the Upper Hutt track with Emily Margaret to target the Telegraph in January.

She will commence her preparation towards that goal at her home track this weekend and Hughes is pleased with her heading into the 1400m event freshup.

“I couldn’t be happier with her,” he said.

“She has done everything right and you have got to start somewhere.

“Unfortunately it is getting wetter and wetter, it’s a shocking day here today (Friday). The track will get a lot heavier by the look of it.

“It would have been nice to get a better track (rated a Heavy10 on Friday), but it won’t worry her.

“But you’re in a straight line and the rail is out 11 metres, so

it may be a wee bit better out there.”

Hughes has elected to utilise stable apprentice Sanu Toolooa’s three kilogram allowance and is confident in his abilities, particularly with his close association with the mare.

“She will go around with 51kg on her now, that will make a bit of a difference,” Hughes said.

“He rides her every day. He knows her well and will do a good job.”

Hughes believes 1400m is Emily Margaret’s pet distance, but has settled on the Gr.3 Lindauer Stewards Stakes Handicap (1200m) as her major target of the spring.

“She is a grand 1400m horse, but there just aren’t the 1400m races around for her,” he said.

“We are just trying to keep her fresh for 1200m.

“If we have got to go to 1400m then we will just have to change our plans.

“We can then freshen her up after the Stewards and get her ready for the Telegraph.”

Hughes will also line-up three other runners on Saturday, including his next potential star filly Papagena.

The three-year-old daughter of Tavistock will jump from barrier nine in the NZ Bloodstock ThreeYear-Old (1000m) after winning over on debut on a Heavy11 track at Riccarton last month.

“I was pleased with her, it was a big effort to go 1200m in those conditions, virtually with just a trial under her belt,” Hughes said.

“She didn’t do much last season because she was a late foal.

“She is really bred to go over a mile and maybe the Oaks distance (2400m).”

The burgeoning training partnership of Roger James and Robert Wellwood will give a pair of talented five-year-old mares their first hit-out of the season when they line-up in the Celebrating Melody Belle 1400 at Ellerlie today.

It could be the start of an exciting spring for Group One performer Rondinella who is earmarked to head across the Tasman to target some rich Australian spoils after today’s run.

“We originally were going to head straight to Australia, but a couple of targets over there were just coming up a bit quick,” Wellwood said.

“We kicked to touch to go to Ellerslie tomorrow (Saturday). It’s not ideal being a heavy track, but she has got a good base of fitness, so it’s not going to hurt her.”

The daughter of Ocean Park ran home well to finish third to Aretha in her 1100m trial at Taupo last month and Wellwood said she has taken a lot of improvement from that trial.

“It was a good trial, she finished it off nicely. She has thrived since.”

Rondinella’s Australian campaign is not yet set in stone, but it is likely to include the Gr.2 W H Stocks Stakes (1600m) first-up at Moonee Valley later this month.

“We will take it step-by-step, but more than likely she will pop over the ditch after this start,” Wellwood said. “The Stocks Stakes is where she will likely head after this, but we’ll just see how she comes through the weekend prior to firming up plans.”

While nominated for the Gr.1 Cox Plate next month, Wellwood is keeping a lid on expectations ahead of her Australian campaign.

“Anyone’s ultimate goal in the spring is to win a Cox Plate, but she would have to come up enormously to have those aspirations in-mind,” he said.

Rees hoping for a crowning moment NZME Morrinsville dentist Simon Rees leads a busy lifestyle, and today promises to be another action-packed day.

Rees, who juggles training racehorses and taking sole-charge of his dental practice in the east Waikato town, will saddle-up Laekeeper in the Boutique Body Corporates Great Northern Hurdle (4190m) at Ellerslie.

The eight-year-old jumper won the Pakuranga Hunt Hurdle (3350m) at the same venue a fortnight ago and has duly been installed the $3.60 favourite for Saturday’s $125,000 feature.

“It’s a busy life,” Rees said.

“I work six days as a dentist, so I am not sure how I fit it all in.

“I’m up at 4:45am and I truck about five horses to Te Aroha every morning. I am back at the dental surgery by 9am.”

Rees is hoping there will be no tricky root canals today so that he has plenty of time to get to Ellerslie, where he will also start progressive stayer Maestro Blu in

the JRA Trophy (2100m) on what could be a bumper day for the owner-trainer.

“I will start at 8:30am in the surgery and I will work until about 11am. I have five patients booked in, so I hope they are relatively straightforward,” he said.

Timaru-born Rees has spent a lifetime in and around horses and has a passion for staying horses and jumpers.

“I grew up riding ponies around South Canterbury. From the age of about seven we used to pack our lunches and spend all weekend on horseback.

“After I went to University I got into horse training a little bit, but then I also got into marathon running.

“I have probably been training on and off for twenty years.”

As if running a dental practice and training a small team wasn’t enough, the Morrinsville horseman also dabbles in thoroughbred breeding.

“I might have a couple of yearlings to sell at Karaka next year and I also keep a few to race,” he

“With Laekeeper’s grandmother I went specifically to Australia to buy her because she had left Laebeel (Gr.1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) runner-up) at that stage.”

It has largely been maintenance work for Laekeeper since his Pakuranga Hunt triumph, but Rees revealed the hurdler has been thriving in recent times courtesy of some time at the beach.

“He goes up to Waiuku Beach

with Catherine Cleghorn for some of his major gallops.

“We have only just done that over the last few months because he really enjoys the beach work.

“She does a really good job on the final gallop and it is something different from the track.”

Laekeeper has, to date, provided Rees with training highlights of the Pakuranga Hunt Hurdle and last year’s Sydenham Hurdles (3100m) at Riccarton, and the Christchurch track will play host to stablemate Maestro Blu later this season, should he continue to make good progression.

“I am expecting a good run from him tomorrow,” Rees said.

“He should have nearly won last start, he just got back too far and ran out of time to pick them up.

“He’s nominated for the New Zealand Cup and if he goes well tomorrow he will probably head down south in the next few weeks.

“I’ve just turned down a reasonable offer for him from Australia, but I do like him and I’d like to see him become a jumper once he finishes on the flat.”

Ashburton Meat Processors Limited operates year-round from its premises in Bridge Street, producing a range of meat cuts on-time and to specification for a number of significant local and national clients.

Due to an increase in production volume, we now require a Saturday shift in the Boning Room. We are looking for approximately 20 new staff to fill the available boning and trimming positions.

Reporting to our boning room supervisor, these roles involve selecting, cutting, de-boning and trimming meat as cleanly and as efficiently as possible to meet prescribed product specifications and maintain the highest possible level of yield.

Successful candidates will be: • Highly reliable with the ability to commit to work every Saturday.

• Physically able to meet the demands of these positions • Able to follow detailed instructions.

• Able to work unsupervised.

• Able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test • NZ citizens or residents, or the holder of a current and valid work visa.

Experience would be advantageous but not essential as full training will be given.

The hours of work will be between 5.30am to 2pm every Saturday.
