Rakaia Anglican minister Al Drye is a man with a broken heart. He has had to make a decision to remain true to himself and to God, but it is a decision which has taken him out of the parish he loves. Drye has tendered his resignation from the minister’s role, following a resolution by the church’s synod earlier this year to allow the blessing of same-sex relationships. It is a decision which has divided parishioners nationwide, creating disillusionment among many who believe such blessings contradict the Bible. Drye said it had certainly been a divisive issue within his parish, with those such as himself who can not support the decision, just quietly walking away. “We don’t want to fight, it
doesn’t do anybody any good, and it certainly doesn’t do the name of Jesus any good,” he said. Drye had been a member of the original synod considering the decision, and was among ministers resigning from this following the passing of the resolution. The father of seven, who lives in the Rakaia area with his children and wife Naomi, will remain in the area. It is a community he holds dear, one in which he has built up the Anglican parish, seeing its congregation double from when he began there threeand-a-half years ago. It is a community which he serves in other ways as well, including as a firefighter with the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade and as a parent of children at Rakaia School. His tenure at the Rakaia Anglican parish will cease on October 31 and upon leaving he plans to continue ministry in the area. The exact form this will take and what building he will use is yet to be decided. But one thing is certain and that is that he will continue to deliver the teachings of God, according to the scriptures. “I want to continue to reach out to Rakaia, its community, with the same message we think is of great value, for years to come.”
