Commotion erupted in Moore Street yesterday afternoon after police cars stopped a vehicle of interest on its way out of the McDonald’s drive-thru.

Eight police officers in four vehicles swooped in on the silver Kia station wagon at around 1.10pm.

Three males and one female were asked to leave the vehicle. One of the male occupants, aged 26, had an active warrant to arrest for failing to appear in the Christchurch and Ashburton Dis-

trict courts on drug related charges.

Another male, aged 47, had an outstanding fines warrant from the Auckland District Court.

Both were taken into custody, and one was heard making loud vocal complaints about his arrest.

Police with gloves searched through the boot, bonnet and interior of the vehicle, and said that they located “a number of items of interest”.

down. They were also escorted away by police in a mufti car, and police are speaking to all four about the items of interest.

Harvey Norman staff were not aware what was going on, but said a number of people appeared to be driving around the car park trying to catch a glimpse of the action.

Police departed the scene at around 1.50pm.

In a statement at around 4.30pm, police said “no further charges have been laid at this stage”.

With a maximum base of close to three-and-a-half metres, those making the trek up the mountain are enjoying some of the best conditions on offer in recent years and with “oodles of snow” the Mt Hutt crew have decided it makes perfect sense to extend their season by seven days from October 8, to October 15 – a date which coincides with the final day of the school holidays. Mt Hutt ski area manager James McKenzie said it was always a bit of a risk to make the call at the start of the season, but they could now safely say it would be a fantastic spring.

Labour leader Jacinda Ardern wasn’t amused when the Wall Street Journal compared her with US President Donald Trump because of Labour’s policy to cut immigration. “Meet New Zealand’s Justin Trudeau – except she’s more like Trump on immigration,” it said in a tweet attached to the article. Asked how she felt about that, Ardern said she was proud of Labour’s policy to double the refugee quota. “I absolutely refute the statement that was made,” she said.

Before the New Zealand Fire Service was established in 1976, the Ashburton Fire Brigade was run under the umbrella of the Ashburton District Council.

And that means retired mayor Geoff Geering has taken to heart the refusal, by today’s Ashburton District councillors, to make a $30,000 grant to the Ashburton Fire Museum based in the Plains Railway and Preservation precinct in the Tinwald Domain.

“I fought for the fire service when I was a young councillor and mayor and I’ll continue to fight for it,” he said.

Last week district councillors and mayor Donna Favel turned down an appeal by the museum committee for a $30,000 grant towards the fit-out of their museum extension.

The grant appeal had already been cut to $20,000 but it still

failed to win the councillors’ hearts with only Neil Brown, Leen Braam, Liz McMillan and Lynette Lovett voting in support.

And that failure of the remaining councillors to see the value of preserving the town’s fire history has angered Geering.

“It worries me that we seem to be prepared to lose the historic things in Ashburton. This fire museum is very much a community asset,” he said.

Until the fire service was established, the fire brigade was under the control of the Borough Council, a councillor always attended fire brigade meetings and reports from the brigade were regularly tabled at council meetings, Geering said.

“In those days the council yard went from Tancred Street through to Burnett Street and then the fire brigade built their buildings there, so there are some pretty strong links.”

Retired equipment, often funded by the council, was usually retained to become part of the district’s fire history, he said.

“This in itself should convey to the councillors of the present council that there is something very significant about the project. This old equipment belongs to the community and it should be preserved and displayed for the community.”

Railway and Preservation Society chairman Darryl Nelson says the council’s failure to fund the project is a backward step.

“It would have cost just $1 per head of population. It’s a pittance. This is all Ashburton equipment and if it falls over it belongs to the council anyway,” Nelson said.

The council gave money to many organisations, but it seemed one-off projects struggled to get a share of council’s grants, he said.

“We’re disappointed, we’re trying to progress things out there and the fire boys are doing an excellent job. They need all the support they can get.”

The fire museum team meets tonight and they’ll be taking a long look at where to from here, said chairman Dave Eddington.

“We’ll look at plan D, C, E, or F, or whatever we’re up to now.

“Yes, we’re disappointed because a lot of effort has gone into this but we’re carrying on regardless, it’s just that we’re now a bit short for the fit-out,” he said.

When the committee asked the council for the grant, it stated that all other funding avenues had been exhausted.

It needed the grant for the extension’s interior fit-out.

The fire museum houses one of New Zealand’s most comprehensive collections of historic fire fighting equipment.

National’s leader Bill English was in Invercargill, announcing a fourth term government would spend $72 million on programmes designed to get hard core beneficiaries into work. It targets those under 25 who have been on a jobseeker benefit for more than six months.

They’ll be offered employment training and one-on-one case management.

Decision unfair The crown decision to pay out the Quake Outcasts is unfair to those who insure, says the Insurance Council of New Zealand. The Outcasts, a group of uninsured home owners in Christchurch, settled with the Crown to receive 80 per cent of their house value pre-earthquake. The council’s chief executive says the settlement raises concerns that people may not insure their properties. – NZN

Land gifted to Methven Care Trust

When it comes to giving to their community, the gifts don’t get much bigger than those given by Alma and the late Allan Lochhead to the people of Methven.

For decades the couple have supported Methven events, people and projects and yesterday one of their most significant gifts was formalised when land given to the Methven Care Trust was officially handed from the hands of its caretakers Advance Ashburton to the trust.

The Methven Care Trust is a registered charity established to fundraise towards the development of a new aged care facility for Methven that will replace Methven House.

The trust will own the new building, but its operation will be overseen by the independent community committee that currently governs Methven House, the Methven Aged Persons Welfare Association.

The aged care facility will be built on land that was part of a much larger block that has been subdivided into residential areas, including Lochhead Crescent and the Camrose Estates residential development.

This will include units with ensuite bathrooms and there will also be smaller private lounges, a room for visiting healthcare and service professionals and a large open-plan dining area which can

A 50-year-old man was taken to hospital after a car and motorbike collided by the railway tracks in central Ashburton on Tuesday afternoon.

Police, St John Ambulance staff and Ashburton Fire & Emergency volunteers were called to the scene at 5.20pm.

It is understood the collision occurred near the intersection of East and Dobson streets, and partially obstructed the road.

Witnesses reported seeing an injured man lying on the grass and a woman trying to help him before emergency services arrived.

Ambulance staff took the man to Ashburton hospital with moderate injuries.

KiwiRail and Train Control were also alerted to the incident and the road was cleared by 6pm.

Another man was hospitalised with moderate injuries following a crash in Newland yesterday morning.

It is understood that a van and truck collided on Fairfield Road at about 8.45am.

One of the drivers had failed to give way.

Tow trucks arrived shortly after 9am and the road was cleared after 9.15am.

Ashburton CBD to get health centre

The battle to find patient space on doctors’ waiting lists could soon be over in Ashburton with a new healthcare centre to be built in central Ashburton.

Eastfield Investments has committed to including a health care facility in its development project with the company’s chairman Brian Davidson saying this had been on the radar from the initial planning stages.

“Three years ago providing a health centre seemed obvious to us and it’s taken this long to get to the business stage,” he said.

The company is well down the track with plans for a 75-room, four-star hotel for the large site bounded by Burnett, Cass and Tancred streets and the state-ofthe-art health service facility is the next major development for the project.

“Planning is well under way for the project and we expect services to be offered from next year. We’re very excited to be progressing detailed development of Eastfield Health which will provide an opportunity to increase community health care, which is accessible, central and close to other services,” Davidson said.

The district was growing rapidly and it had been clear for some time that additional health and well-being services were needed, he said.

“The steady growth of the region reinforces the need to support the services available in the area.”

The new health centre will go some way towards easing Ashburton’s GP shortage which has led to current GPs working with a patient load that is significantly higher than the national average.

Over recent years this has seen some practices close their books

Brian Davidson to new patients, creating a situation where some new arrivals have struggled to enrol with a medical centre.

Details on the services the new centre will provide and the number of doctors it will employ are yet to be revealed, because of commercial sensitivity, Davidson said.

A steering group of Mary Ross (co-opted chairperson) and Eastfield directors Roger Bonifant and Graham Kennedy are now well down the track with planning.

For Ross, who has had a long involvement in health care in the Ashburton District, the project is an exciting one.

“Eastfield Health will provide a truly modern service that is techenabled and will provide an approach that utilises the clinical skills of a team of health professionals with the patient as their collaborative focus. The new development allows for a purpose built facility which is mindful of this team approach and also has the ability to grow in line with demand,” she said.

The greater Eastfield development that will include retail and commercial space, a range of services and open green spaces, is a co-operative venture involving several landowners.

A final location for the new health centre will be decided later this month.

Record breaking wild, wet winter

The torrential rain in July that saw much of the Ashburton District under water for several days was officially a one-day record breaker.

When 112mm of rain was recorded at Winchmore on July 21 it eclipses all records since official data was collected by NIWA since 1927, when weather data was first collected.

The amount of rain recorded at Coldstream, 86mm, may have been significantly less, but it was also the highest on record.

For the month of July, the 366mm recorded in Ashburton

may have been a modern day record breaker, but it was only the fourth highest since records were started in 1909.

It was 195 per cent above normal.

Mt Somers had its second highest one-day rainfall since 1980, 86mm, Ashburton its second highest since 1927, 93mm.

In its winter weather wrap, NIWA described the season as one of contrasts – a relatively settled start in June, record rainfalls in July and warmer than normal days in August.

Winter’s highest temperature was in Kaikoura, 23.2° Celsius on August 17 and its lowest, minus

14.6° Celsius in Tekapo on July 29.

Of the six main centres, Christchurch was the coldest this winter.

Invercargill recorded its sunniest winter since 1913.

The Ashburton District was spared the high winds that plagued some parts of the country and while snow and ice made life difficult in the Mackenzie Country, the district was also without a major snowfall on the plains.

At the end of winter, soil moisture levels were above normal for this time of year in eastern parts of the South Island.

Chefs to launch books English briefed daily ■ POLITICS

Two Kiwi celebrity chefs are Ashburtonbound for book launch celebrations within the next month.

Culinary enthusiasts can rub elbows with Nadia Lim on September 13 and Chelsea Winter on October 6, in evenings organised by Paper Plus and hosted at Hotel Ashburton.

It’s the first time either star has come to Ashburton, and both will be on booklaunch duty.

Paper Plus owner Terry McNab said the events are “sure to be a good time”.

“Nadia’s definitely sparked a lot of interest because of her My Food Bag.” He said VIP tickets for her show had been “snapped up quickly”, and included a half hour meet-and-greet and VIP goodie bag.

General admission gives ticket holders admission to the Q&A, food sampling, book sales and book signings, as well as a take-home pack of goodies.

From each Let’s Eat copy sold in Ashburton $5 will also go to the Meningitis Foundation, and guest speaker Claire Rushton, who lost her daughter to meningococcal disease in 2015, will speak about the cause.

McNab said Cheslea Winter’s visit on October 6 was also proving popular.

Winter’s new book Eat is due to be released at the end of the month, and she’ll be coming to town to speak about her recipes, offer book signings and samplings.

Councillor forced to resign Australia’s citizenship woes have made their way across the ditch, claiming the job of a district councillor.

Whangarei councillor Jayne Golightly has been forced to resign after discovering she was not a New Zealand citizen.

The hairdresser was elected to represent the Denby Ward last October.

Whangarei District Council released a statement confirming Golightly’s resignation, adding that she had applied for citizenship and intends to re-contest the role.

She arrived in New Zealand from Britain as an 18-monthold and told the NZ Herald while she travels on a UK passport she never believed she wasn’t a Kiwi citizen.

“My mother and father were granted citizenship in 2003,

when I was on my OE in the UK,” she said.

“I had absolutely no reason to ever question or suspect my lack of citizenship.”

Golightly has admitted the fault was hers entirely.

The Taxypayers Union’s Garrick Wright-McNaughton said that excuse wasn’t good enough.

“At best, Ms Golightly is incompetent for not bothering to check,” he said, “An apology isn’t good enough, she needs to refund her taxpayer funded salary that she was never entitled to.”

The citizenship of politicians has been in the spotlight since late July, when a number of Australian federal politicians discovered they held dual citizenship, banned by the country’s constitution.

Ardern says no to 40 week abortions

The University of Auckland has taken “a big blow” and tumbled down the top university rankings – if it continues New Zealand will no longer have a representative in the top 200.

Three New Zealand universities have slipped, three have stayed the same and two have improved in this year’s global rankings, published yesterday by the Times Higher Education.

The University of Auckland plummeted to its lowest position in the rankings to date – falling 27 places from 165th to 192nd position. Compared to last year, it suffers from lower teaching and research reputations and a poorer citation impact.

Global Rankings editorial director Phil Baty said the University of Auckland’s decline was a “big blow” to New Zealand.

A University of Auckland spokesperson said they were disappointed with the drop.

“Our total score in the THE system dropped by only a small amount, from 53.4 to 52.6, but because of the large number of universities with scores close to that figure, that was sufficient to push us down the rankings.”

The University of Otago, University of Canterbury and Massey University all main-

tained their performance while the University of Waikato and Auckland University of Technology jumped a band. Lincoln University dropped from 401500 to the 501-600 ranking.

by Times Higher Education.

Globally, the University of Oxford retains first place in the World University Rankings. The University of Cambridge climbs two places to second, overtaking California Institute of Technology and Stanford University, both joint third.

Otago is placed in the 201-250 band, maintaining the place it has held for the past two years.

“Otago’s result confirm its strong position within the top echelon of the top 2-3 per cent of universities worldwide, and as one of New Zealand’s top two universities,” Deputy ViceChancellor professor Helen Nicholson said.

The University of Auckland’s decline occurred as some Asian universities have risen up the table. It was overtaken

by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University and Nanjing University in mainland China and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Victim named Police have confirmed the identity of a man found in a North Canterbury riverbed, as Christchurch man Bradley Alan Lomax. The 24-year-old’s body was found in the Waimakariri River bed on Monday, prompting a homicide investigation. Detective Inspector Greg Murton says police would like to hear from anybody in the vicinity of Harrs Road and South Eyre Road on Monday between the hours of 8pm and 10.30pm.

NZ universities drop in world rankings

Abortions up to 40 weeks would not be made legal under Labour leader Jacinda Ardern’s plans to remove it from the Crimes Act, Ardern said.

The Saving Downs advocacy group has condemned Ardern for her position which they say could make abortion legal at any age where the child has a disability.

Group leader Mike Sullivan says doing so would send a strong discriminatory message, and a Labour government should instead focus on support for parents with a prenatal disability diagnosis.

“That is not what I’ve said.

What I’ve said is currently abortion is in the Crimes Act. It shouldn’t be in the Crimes Act,” she said yesterday.

“Yes, we need to have regulation and proper practice and standards around this area of our health law but it should not be contained in the Crimes Act.”

Ardern said she’d consult with the Abortion Supervisory Committee who know what works and what doesn’t work under the current system.

There would need to be a majority of support from MPs, voting according to their conscience, for Ardern’s proposals to become law.

“There will be some elements that some members of parliament have no issue with, including it being removed from the Crimes Act, there may be other elements that they do,” she said.

“We’ll make sure we draft a bill that enables members to vote on the bits that they do take no issue with versus the ones that they don’t but I do need to do that work in office.”

When the issue of abortion was raised in Monday’s leaders debate, National leader Bill English said he wouldn’t support changing current laws.

Huge airport drug hauls Similar arrests, different day: Customs officers at Auckland International Airport have nabbed their third alleged drug smugglers in three days.

In the latest incident, two Latvian nationals were caught with eight kilograms of cocaine hidden in their suitcases.

The 24-year-old man and 30-year-old woman arrived at Auckland from Chile on Monday and were profiled by Customs.

Thorough baggage examination located the drugs and the pair were charged with importing and possessing for supply a

class A controlled drug.

They have since appeared in Manukau District Court.

Customs also arrested a 44-year-old French national who arrived at Auckland Airport from Thailand on Saturday, after locating 2.3kg of methamphetamine hidden in his false bottom suitcase.

Customs manager of passenger operations Peter Lewis said the arrests highlighted Customs has the right processes in place to identify criminals hiding within the crowds.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Kiwi hip hop artist Scribe after skipping his court date in Christchurch again. Scribe, real name Malo Luafutu, is accused of drugs and weapons-related offences and failed to appear in the Christchurch District Court yesterday. It’s not the first time a warrant has been issued for the rapper’s arrest, as he failed to appear in court on July 25 as well.

The 37-year-old later made contact with the court in regard to his outstanding warrant in July. – NZN

TOP goes to court The Opportunities Party says it’s taking TVNZ to court for excluding it from televised pre-election debates. A spokesman for the party has confirmed TOP has lodged papers at the High Court at Auckland for a judicial review of the channel’s decision to not allow it to take part in Friday’s minor party leaders debate. The party was also asking interim orders and the case was set down for court this morning, he said. TVNZ is meanwhile defending its criteria to only allow parties either currently in parliament or polling over 3 per cent to take part.

Wellington CBD fire Just before 9am yesterday, thick plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from the top of the Willeston Centre in Wellington.

The occupants of the building were evacuated and the Fire Service closed Victoria Street for a time. The fire, which began in the machine room on the top floor, was extinguished by 9.30am.

Police say everyone in the building was accounted for and no one was injured.

Witnesses sought Police investigating a fatal crash near Timaru over the weekend are calling for any witnesses to come forward. Daniel Anderson, 40, died in the three-car collision on Saturday. Five other people were injured. The accident happened on State Highway 1 at Pareora.

Officers investigating the accident are encouraging anyone who witnessed it to contact them.

Sergeant Kevin Reynolds said they were keen to speak to anyone who may have seen Anderson’s vehicle – a black HQ Holden – before the crash or anything else that may help in their investigation of the circumstances. “We understand there was a white car travelling north along SH1 around the time of the crash and we would like to speak with the occupant/s of this car, as we believe they may have witnessed something that could be useful to the investigation.”- NZME

Consider challenges some people face Matt Markham

I

t was nice to see some of our district councillors out in force this week looking at some of the challenges that are faced by those among us who face mobility issues on a daily basis.

It could be very easy for those charged with overseeing our district to remain faceless, hidden away at Baring Square East shuffling papers.

So to see them out and about and putting themselves in situations that their constituents face every day can only be a positive sign for the district.

The best way for something to be remedied is for someone who has the power to fix an issue see first-hand what it is like.

And while this week’s mobility scooter ride around the CBD may have been as much about awareness as it was about learning more about the challenges, it’s certainly something we need to see more of.

Our councillors are elected by us to make the best decisions for our community and they will never be able to achieve that unless they completely understand what is going on.

I would challenge anyone to try experiencing something as simple as crossing a street, or getting from one spot to another in amongst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, without restriction.

It certainly could be an eyeopening experience.

This week’s exercise did highlight a number of areas of concern around Ashburton for users of mobility equipment such as scooters and wheelchairs, especially in our main CBD. We, as people of this community, probably need to be more aware of the impact some things we do can have on others – no matter how mundane or simple they might seem.

It could be something as little as the placement of a sign outside a shop – its position could mean that someone isn’t able to get past without contact or it could mean they can’t get past at all.

Like I said, they’re only little things, but if we are more alert to them, the easier we could make life for someone else.

Ruapuna Line almost open

The Ruapuna Line, the latest addition to MHV Water’s infrastructure, is set to come on stream.

Consisting of 18.5km of pipe that will deliver pressurised water to MHV shareholders in the Ruapuna district for the purpose of irrigation, the line will be officially opened on September 19.

The Fulton Hogan project, which has seen more than $13 million of scheme spending plus significant on-farm investment on infrastructure, will provide MHV shareholders in the area with a platform to sustainably irrigate their properties, MHV Water chief executive Mel Brooks said.

The completion of the line means water will be available to be delivered to shareholders for the opening of the irrigation season, Brooks said.

Shareholders at a recent open day at the Baxters Road offtake to the line heard that the project would come in on time, under budget and meeting specifications.

They were also told that MHV Water would provide further training for new shareholders on delivery, efficiency

and best practice before the start of the irrigation season.

MHV Water was formed on June 1 this year after Mayfield Hinds Irrigation Ltd merged with Valetta Irrigation Limited.

The new combined scheme, a co-operative with 204 farmer shareholders, delivers water to shareholders in the Hinds Plains catchment through over 320km of open channel races and 117km of piped network.

Through that network it can irrigate up to 58,000 hectares across the catchment.

“Our scheme dates back to 1947 and by undertaking projects like the Ruapuna Line, we are continuing the innovation and foresight that was shown by our predecessors as we deliver environmentally and economically sustainable water to our shareholders,” Brooks said.

“We are active supporters of sustainable aquifer recharge through the MAR Governance Group and the pilot that is currently being run in conjunction with ECan and MPI, and we continue to invest in technology and science for the benefit of our shareholders and the local community.”

Canterbury A&P Show attracts overseas judges Livestock and equestrian judges from across the globe will descend on Christchurch in mid-November as New Zealand’s largest A&P show turns 155 years old.

More than 500 people volunteer at the Canterbury A&P Show every year and around 120 of those volunteers are judges, with some coming from as far as the USA in 2017.

Canterbury A&P Association president, Peter Gilbert, said the calibre of judges was one of the reasons the Canterbury A&P Show is seen as New Zealand’s most prestigious A&P event.

“Bringing these judges in from overseas is a huge drawcard for our competitors.

Not only do they bring extensive international experience, it’s also extra confirmation for our competitors that their stock is the best of the best, as they’re being judged by someone completely new.”

This year the Canterbury A&P Show will host a Royal A&P Dairy Cattle Event, which has prompted the appointment of Mark Rueth from Wisconsin, USA. Reuth owns Rosedale Genetics, has sold embryos in 10 countries and has judged at top level shows and expos in the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Switzerland and Mexico. He also currently serves on the World Dairy Cattle Show committee.

It’s not just the overseas judges that bring a wealth of knowledge to the event, Gilbert said.

“We also have judges coming from

across New Zealand, many of whom have decades of experience both here and overseas.

“A lot of these people have worked in the industry for a long time, forging their careers in genetics, owning their own studs or just being incredibly passionate about stock judging. Some have volunteered for many years at our Show too. We can’t thank them enough for lending their time and expertise.”

With entries closing in a couple of weeks, Gilbert urged exhibitors to get their entries in.

“Not only is it a great opportunity to win prizes and awards, it’s also a chance to swap knowledge and ideas with other exhibitors and learn from judges too. Plus, you can’t beat the chance to catch up with old friends and meet other likeminded people. It’s a very special event and my family and I cherish the friendships that have come from the show over the years.”

The 2017 Canterbury A&P Show will take place from November 15 to 17 at Canterbury Agricultural Park.

There are $100,000 of prizes up for grabs across 3000 classes and 6500 entries are expected to be received. Horse and pony entries close September 15, livestock entries close September 22, showjumping and dressage entries close on October 18.

Associate Environment Minister Scott Simpson is sending a strong message of support to help New Zealand’s rural recycling programme meet an ambitious target to clear more waste.

At a ceremony in Auckland earlier this week the minister announced his decision to extend accreditation of Agrecovery as a product stewardship programme for the agrichemical and rural sector.

“This is a vote of confidence for our scheme which, since July 1, is being solely managed by the Agrecovery Foundation,” its general manager, Simon Andrew, said.

Since the programme commenced, Agrecovery has diverted 1800 tonnes of plastic from landfill or from harmful disposal practices like burning.

However, Andrew said that was not enough and the aim was to boost recycling efforts to clear 60 per cent of plastic containers and drums by 2020.

“This is a significant increase on the 40 per cent we are clearing today,” he said.

The accreditation coincides with the launch of innovative, state-of-the-art equipment for the nationwide collection of plastic from the agricultural sector.

KiwiSaver claim rejected by expert A retirement policy expert has rejected a report by the ANZ that claims KiwiSaver may not be reaching the people who most need help with saving for their retirement.

The bank, which is also the country’s largest KiwiSaver provider, released a raft of recommendations as part of an assessment of the scheme, which turned 10 years old on July 1.

The research found that although 80 per cent of those surveyed who earn more than $100,000 were members, just 53 per cent of those who earned less than $50,000 had signed up.

But Michael Littlewood, who was previously the co-director of the Retirement Policy and Research Centre at Auckland University, said it was no surprise to see lower KiwiSaver membership for those on lower pay – but it did not mean they should join the scheme.

“Of course we should expect the lower-paid to have lower levels of KiwiSaver membership.

“We cannot know the answer to that without a full needs analysis at a household level with full asset/liability measurement.”

Toll Group NZ sank into the red on a rising cost line, joining other transport and logistics firms facing the squeeze when last year’s Kaikoura earthquake disrupted supply routes.

The freight forwarding company, whose parent Toll Holdings in Australia was bought by Japan Post for $A6.5 billion last year, reported a net loss of $14.2 million in the year to March 31 versus a net profit of $5.9m in the nine months to March 31, 2016, according to the annual accounts filed with the Companies Office.

Revenue was $385.5m in the 12 months versus $278.3m in the

prior nine month period. However, direct transport and logistics costs were $229.7m, or an average monthly cost of $19.1m, versus $168m, or $18.7m a month.

Employee benefit expenses of $75.8m compared to $54.5m in the year earlier period.

Toll’s accounts don’t provide details on what drove the increased transport and logistics expense, but echoes the experience of locally owned rivals such as NZX-listed Mainfreight and Fliway which pointed to the closure of the South Island’s main rail trunk and State Highway 1 caused by the November quake

in Kaikoura as pushing up costs.

Toll’s local accounts show it bought land in Auckland for $58.1m on June 16 of this year from Fletcher Building subsidiary Fletcher Steel and ex-Fletcher unit Pacific Steel.

Toll operates the TranzLink trucking and freight logistics operations in New Zealand, having bought what is now the stateowned KiwiRail from American investors who bought the rail service when it was privatised in the mid-1990s. It remains the biggest customer of state-owned KiwiRail.

Plexure founder exits after restructure

By Paul McBeth Plexure Group chief executive Scott Bradley left the company yesterday, rounding out an overhaul of the business which is expected to help narrow the digital ad firm’s first-half loss and generate positive cashflow this month.

Bradley set up the company, then called VoucherMob and later truncated to VMob, seven years ago and led it through a backdoor listing via NZAX-listed Velo Capital in 2012. Through that time he’s helped build up annual revenue to $7.3 million in the year ended March 31 from just $28,000 in its first year of trading. Plexure has yet to turn a profit, though it narrowed its annual loss to $6.5 million in March 2017 from $6.7 million a year earlier.

This year the Auckland-based

company embarked on a major restructure, slashing its workforce by a quarter, in an effort to generate positive cashflow, and Bradley yesterday said that was an “ideal time” for his exit. Former Bank of New Zealand executive Craig Herbison will take over the reins from today, although Bradley will stay on as a director and significant shareholder and will work with Herbison over the next three months to aid the transition.

Under Plexure’s new structure it now has five arms, each of which is run by a senior manager, and is still growing revenue but on a lower cost base. The company yesterday provided first-half guidance for operating revenue to rise 52 per cent to $5.1 million in the six months ending September 30 while narrowing its net loss to $400,000 from $3.7 million.

Plexure had been targeting a positive cashflow position by the end of the year but says that will now happen in September.

As at March 31 it had $615,000 of cash and equivalents, after a year where operating cash outflow widened to $4.7 million from $4.5 million and investing cash outflow shrank to $2.5 million from $3.1 million.

Since then, the company raised $1.9 million through two capital raisings and renegotiated the terms of a $1.6 million convertible note last week pushing out the repayment date to March 31, 2019 from November 3, 2017.

The shares, which have migrated to NZX’s main board, last traded at 12 cents and have more than halved so far this year, valuing the company at $13.4 million.

Honesty is the best policy When you’ve lived in a property for a while it’s easy to forget some of its quirks. You might be used to the fact that the front gate doesn’t shut properly, or that the bathroom windows need fixing.

Any potential buyers will be able to spot issues like this when they inspect the property – and can choose to fix them if they purchase it. But it’s a lot harder for them to identify other things you might have forgotten about, like the fact that you didn’t bother getting the appropriate consents from the council when you built the deck 25 years ago.

You might think the deck is fine, but you need to front up about the consent issue, not least because it’s the decent thing to do.

“When you’re selling a property you are legally obliged to share all the relevant information about it,” says Kevin LampenSmith, chief executive of the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA).

“If work has been done on the property during your ownership, either by you or someone else, the standard terms of the sale and purchase agreement require the seller to warrant that any legally required permits or consents were obtained.

“If you knowingly fail to disclose unconsented works, you are in breach of contract.

This means there is a risk that the sale could fall over or that you could run into problems prior to settlement. Even worse, the buyer could take you to court for breach of warranty.”

Your first step should be to discuss the issue with your licensed real estate agent and your lawyer, Lampen-Smith says. They are likely to advise that you are better off to disclose anything unconsented, or to strike out the applicable vendor warranties clause in the sale and purchase agreement.

“Once the real estate agent is aware of the situation, they are bound by their Code of Conduct to disclose it to any prospective buyers. If you tell them about the deck or any other issues to do with the property, but ask them not to tell anyone, they are required to stop working for you.”

Similar disclosure issues can arise over more sensitive matters. Some sellers worry about whether or not to tell an agent or prospective buyers about an issue that doesn’t relate to the physical state of the property – such as it being the scene of a murder, suicide or violent crime.

straightforward, Lampen-Smith says.

“The REAA advises agents to take a cautious approach and to consider each situation on its facts, while recognising the individual circumstances.”

The High Court has said that a more recent event, especially one that might have gained some notoriety in the local neighbourhood, may have more bearing on a prospective buyer’s view of the property than a historic one.

The location of the event (whether it took place in the grounds of the property or inside the house) and whether the property has been lived in since it happened, as well as the likely reaction of potential buyers, should also be taken into account.

The death of someone from natural causes at the property does not need to be disclosed, as this is considered an everyday occurrence.

“If you are in this situation as a seller, it’s best to discuss what to do with your real estate agent,” Lampen-Smith says.

“They cannot tell prospective buyers without your consent – and if they decide that a sensitive issue should be disclosed but you don’t agree, then they must cease to act for you.”

Whatever the situation, whether it’s unconsented work or a tragic event, honesty

is the best policy. Talk to your agent about how the disclosure will be handled. There is no need to advertise the information or tell everyone who wanders along to an open home, but potential buyers who have indicated an interest in making an offer must be told.

How to control leaf curl Leaf curl (Taphrina deformans) is a common fungal disease that affects peach, nectarine, peachcott, and peacherine etc trees. It causes the leaves (and some times the fruit) of the infected tree to become puckered, curled and much thicker than normal. If left untreated the problem will get worse year-after-year and reduce the tree’s ability to produce lots of fruit.

Over winter the fungal spores take up residence in different parts of the tree, but mainly in the buds. When the cool wet weather of spring and summer arrives many leaf curl spores are produced and are then splashed or blown from tree to tree. Because this is also the time the trees are breaking bud and forming new leaves, the new growth is easily reinfected with leaf curl.

Controlling leaf curl isn’t easy but good orchard hygiene habits, which should be repeated each year, will give you the best chance.

First of all, plant your trees where they will get adequate air movement – this will help minimise fungal problems. If you haven’t got your fruit trees yet for this year, there’s still time. Visit ediblegarden. nz and download our 2017 catalogue of heritage fruit and nut trees and a range of berries which can all be delivered straight to your garden. But do it quick as now’s the perfect time to plant.

Next, in spring apply a light dressing of a quick acting fertiliser such as sulphate of ammonia to encourage new leaf growth.

At the same time, I also recommend applying a seaweed fertiliser, such as Seasol and Comfrey spray, to help the tree’s immunity to leaf curl.

If you do get leaf curl, during spring is when you will notice it in your trees. Once you notice the symptoms of leaf curl in your leaves it is too late to control the disease in those leaves but there is lots you can to do try and stop the fungus from spreading.

The first step is to remove and destroy as many infected leaves as practical. But don’t compost these as it will spread the infection.

In autumn and early winter clean up around the base of any peach, nectarine etc trees and removing as many leaves as

possible. Because these types of trees are susceptible to leaf curl, I suggest doing this regardless of whether they’ve shown any signs of disease. And, again remember – don’t compost the leaves.

trees. A copper-based fungicide will help stop leaf curl on peach and nectarine trees but it will also treat fungal problems on other fruit trees – like black spot on apple trees.

Next, you should spray your deciduous trees (the trees that lose their leaves every year) with lime sulphur.

I also recommend mixing in the copper fungicide with a spreader/sticker, like RainGard, both of which you can get from your local garden centre. RainGard works a bit like soap. Combined with the fungicide, it will make the whole area you spray wet and then when it dries it sticks to the area so you get good coverage that sticks or stays on the tree for a long time.

The lime sulphur acts by burning off the over wintering fungi and pests, including mites. It’s very important you do this for gooseberry bushes because they are prone to catching mites which can eat out the flower buds, meaning your bush ends up with no fruit. Luckily, the lime sulphur will get rid of those mites.

But I don’t recommend applying it to your apricot trees because they can be sensitive to lime, so it’s best just to avoid it.

Around now, in late winter/spring (and don’t worry if you haven’t done any of the other steps yet – just start now), apply a copper-based fungicide to all your deciduous fruit trees – not just peach

The copper fungicide (and spreader/ sticker) should be applied while the leaf and flower buds are still closed – right before the buds burst. Spray thoroughly as you need to create a surface barrier to protect against the fungus. Then follow this up with another spray 10 to 14 days later – particularly if you’ve had lots of wet weather. This will ensure the trees get the coverage they need.

Once you have flower buds showing it’s

really important not to spray copper, as it’s very toxic to bees when it’s wet – though fine once it’s dried. And it’s also past the point of the copper being effective as the idea of the copper is to add a protectant layer over the buds, before they burst.

And that’s it for the year. Now, you just have to go back to the beginning of the process and repeat all of the steps – except for applying copper fungicide.

Because copper is a heavy metal it can build up in the soil. It’s also very toxic to bees when wet so should only be used when necessary. If in the past year your trees showed no signs of disease just skip the copper step the following year.

But, if they are newly planted trees; or were affected by fungus or disease; or you had a wet winter; or you didn’t spray with lime sulphur, then you should still apply copper fungicide.

UK army members in Nazi terror plot Four serving members of the British army have been arrested on suspicion of being members of a banned far-right group.

The West Midlands Counterterrorism Unit yesterday said officers had arrested four people in central England alleged to be members of the neo-Nazi group National Action.

The group is banned in the UK, and an official list of banned groups describes it as “virulently racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic”.

The force said the men were suspected of “being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation” of terrorism acts. They were detained as part of a “preplanned and intelligence-led” operation and there was “no threat to the public’s safety”.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence confirmed

that the four men are serving members of the army.

“We can confirm that a number of serving members of the army have been arrested under the Terrorism Act for being associated with a proscribed far-right group,” the army said.

The men, aged 22 to 32, were held at a police station. Several properties were raided in connection with the arrests.

National Action was established in 2013 and has been linked to the murder of Labour lawmaker Jo Cox in 2016. The brutal murder, a week before Britain’s referendum on European Union membership, shocked the country.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd outlawed the group after an assessment that it was “concerned in terrorism” ahead of the trial of right-wing extremist Thomas Mair,

who was convicted and sentenced to life in Cox’s murder. A judge said Mair carried out the murder to advance a political cause “of violent white supremacism associated with Nazism”.

The Home Office said that at the time, National Action posted tweets lauding Mair’s actions.

In a list of banned groups, the Home Office said the group frequently distributed “extremely violent imagery and language” on social media and aimed its propaganda at recruiting young people. It added that the group “seeks to divide society by implicitly endorsing violence against ethnic minorities and perceived ‘race traitors’”.

Membership or inviting support for National Action is a criminal offence that carries a sentence of up to 10 years.

Mountain may be at risk of collapse North Korea’s provocative nuclear testing may not necessarily lead to war. But there may be another catastrophic risk: the mountain beneath which it has exploded six bombs may be on the point of collapse.

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post is quoting a Chinese scientist as saying if the peak crumbles, clouds of radioactive dust and gas will blanket the region.

At the heart of the fears is the Punggyeri test site in the rogue-nation’s northeast.

It’s carved deep into the side of Mount Mantap.

This is a nondescript granite peak in the remote and heavily forested Hamgyong

mountain range about 80 kilometres from Chongjin, the nearest big city.

Geophysicist Wen Lianxing and his team at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui province, has posted an analysis of data collected from more than 100 seismic monitoring sites across China.

This has narrowed down the location of Pyongyang’s nuclear tests with a margin of error of just 100m. They’ve all been under the same mountain.

And the weekend’s blast was by far the biggest of them all. It produced a shockwave similar to that of a magnitude 6.3

earthquake, indicating a bomb equivalent to some 120 kilotons of TNT explosive.

Eight minutes later, a second earthquake was detected.

Geophysicists around the world have been wracking their brains as to the implications of this second event.

So far the general consensus is it was likely part of the interior of the mountain collapsing in on a cavern created where the rock was vaporised by the blast of the hydrogen bomb.

Satellite imagery also shows the blast caused numerous landslides around the Punggye-ri test site.

France’s Closer Magazine was ordered to pay 100,000 euros at a Paris court over the long-lens images of Kate sunbathing on a terrace, after it was ruled they had breached her privacy. The photos, taken as Kate holidayed with the Duke at a private chateau in Provence, southern France, adorned the front and inside pages of the publication in September 2012.

Meghan speaks about Prince Harry Meghan Markle has revealed she was dating Prince Harry for six months before it became public, saying: “We’re two people who are really happy and in love”.

The Suits actress met the royal in July 2016 and their relationship has brought a deluge of attention.

When news of their pairing broke it caused such a media frenzy it prompted him to take the unusual step of releasing a statement.

However, she told US magazine Vanity Fair dating Prince Harry has not changed her.

She said: “I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple.

“We’re two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception.

“Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

Colin Trevorrow

Stars Wars loses director Colin Trevorrow will no longer be directing Star Wars: Episode IX. Lucasfilm said yesterday that the company and the director have mutually chosen to part ways citing differing visions for the project. Trevorrow is best known for directing Jurassic World and has been working on the ninth instalment of the space saga for some time. He was officially announced as the director of Episode IX in August of 2015 and has been co-writing the script. It is the final instalment in the new “main” Star Wars trilogy that began with J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens in 2015.

Sweet and sour chicken sausages 8 Tegel Pre-cooked Chicken Sausages 1.8kg 1 red onion, sliced 1 red or green pepper, deseeded and chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed ½ t grated fresh ginger 1 t soy sauce 2 T tomato sauce 1 T brown sugar 1 T white vinegar ½ C water ½ C drained canned pineapple pieces ½ C pineapple juice 1½ t cornflour (maize) 3 T water, extra pepper, garlic and ginger to the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until the onion is golden.

■ Add the soy sauce, tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, pineapple juice and water. Simmer uncovered for 3 to 4 minutes.

■ Add the sausages back to the

pan, along with the pineapple pieces. Simmer for a further 3 to 4 minutes or until the sausages are warmed through.

■ Combine the cornflour and extra water, and stir through to thicken the sauce.

Allenton Croquet Club Club President Ann Sunbeam welcomed Club members.

The Allenton Sports Club will open on Saturday September 9 and our Croquet Club’s opening day is Monday September 11. Uniform to be worn on both occasions Resignations were received with regret from two long time members.

Arrangements are being made for another film evening fundraiser in November.

Next meeting Friday October 6 at 10am New members are always welcome to both Golf and Assn Croquet.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Fine weather continues to see good attendances on our club days. We are making regular use of one end of the carpark/piste area, as it is quite a different terrain to play on, and we need to get more familiar with it.

Our club continues to grow and we have welcomed nine new members this year.

Wednesday practices are continuing at 6pm, but regular Sunday practices will discontinue meantime.

We hosted the Canterbury Singles on August 5 and our championship winner was Neville Bensdorp (Ashburton) and runner-up was Nicolas Zavier (Christchurch).

Other Ashburton players did well in their field with Karen Bensdorp winning the championship consolation, Jan Guilford, runner-up in the Plate, Rewa Kyle winner of the Plate consolation.

Shelagh Field won the Bowl and Ellen Pithie runner-up.

Karen Bensdorp won both the top woman player and top senior player.

It was great to see the progress in the ability of our players. Two of our team took part in the Mark Choveaux Triples August 19/20 with Karen and Neville Bensdorp and Richard Browne winning the trophy against some very good competition. Rewa Kyle, Jan Guilford and Marion Harrison finished 3rd in the Plate.

Allenton Bowling Club As a fundraising event for the replacement of the artificial green 43 bowlers, partners and friends left the club house at 9.30am in light rain to travel 1 and 1/2 hours to the headwaters of the Rakaia River where the The following weekend Jan Guilford, Rewa Kyle and Marion Harrison took part in the Women’s Triples finishing in the Championship and 5th overall.

Coronation/Phoenix target shooting clubs With most of the postal competition results in we can be very proud of our people. In the Inter-Association postal matches only our B grade team failed to make the top 5. The open team finished 4th the A grade team 4th B grade team 11th C grade team 4th D grade team 3rd women’s team 3rd and junior team 3rd.

Looking closely at the results it would seem we are the only association that does not include at least one city so it would be fair to say our teams performed exceptionally well.

Further exciting news in the postal results is that Ashburton College teams finished 1st and 5th in the SSS (Secondary Schools’ Shooting) matches.

Both teams are made up of Coronation/Phoenix juniors and the manager, Stephen Millichamp, made a very brave decision to involve every shooter in selecting two teams of four.

The option was to choose a team of four and have the lowest score dropped

The College team 1 won the competition for the third year running and look like being a strength for a few years yet.

Yet to come is the result of the Titipounamu (rifleman bird) competition run by the Auckland Association. We entered this competition for the first time this year and are hopeful that our score of 2344.108 will be enough for a top 5 finish.

This competition calls for a team of eight shooters A grade and below. The Junior shooters are currently enjoying an enforced break of two weeks before training starts for the SSS shoulder to shoulder match being held this year in Palmerston North.

The Palmerston North range will seem like a second home for Lanelle McArthur, Shania Harrison-Lee and Emma Smith all who have just returned from representing the South Island in the annual North v South match.

CLUB NEWS TERMS

Tinwald Branch New Zealand Red Cross For the September meeting the Tinwald Branch hosted members of the Foundation of the Blind.

This event has been happening annually since 1967 and is one of the branch highlights for the year.

Vice-president Elizabeth Davies welcomed everyone. Special entertain-

ment for the afternoon was presented by the Pasifika Play Group and the ABC Allenton.

What a treat was presented by the children and parents in their festive clothing and leis.

Their smiling faces enhancing all the actions during the songs beautifully sung accompanied by lead singer and guitar.

A special moment was when they

sung Happy Birthday in both English and Samoan to Patricia Macer who will be 100 years old later this month.

Judy Skevington thanked them all for their wonderful performance and presented them with a large basket of fruit.

Raffles were drawn and the sales table did a brisk trade. A lovely afternoon tea was served and another memorable afternoon came to a close.

In brief Matson quits Tabai Matson has quit his post as head coach of English Premiership club Bath for personal reasons.

Bath announced former Crusaders assistant coach Matson will return to New Zealand following their Premiership game against Northampton on September 15.

Matson told Bath Rugby TV that his mother and mother-in-law were both ill and that his returning to New Zealand was a relatively easy decision to make. He linked up with Bath ahead of last season after fellow Kiwi Todd Blackadder was appointed the club’s rugby director.

Paddon out for Rally Spain New Zealand’s Hayden Paddon has been dropped from the Hyundai World Rally Team for next month’s Rally Spain.

The 30-year-old has made way for Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen, who has signed on with the Korean manufacturer for the final three events of the year.

It has been a disappointing season for Paddon, who has struggled to find consistency – failing to finish four events while recording just one podium finish.

Paddon will miss the tarmac test but is expected to return for the final two rounds on gravel – Rally Great Britain and Rally Australia – with Dani Sordo standing aside.

“Reaching this decision was

not easy, but we felt it was necessary to reaffirm ourselves in the championship battle,” Hyundai boss Michel Nandan said.

“Discussions with Andreas have been ongoing since he was out of a drive but we had nothing to offer him, as our line-up was fixed. However, with us losing ground, we decided to reevaluate the situation. We had an open discussion with all three of our crews, and informed them of our decision to make this adjustment.

“The precise line-up for Spain has been made, but we will confirm our crews for Wales and Australia in due course. For now, though, we welcome Andreas and Anders into Hyundai Motor-

sport and look forward to getting our 2017 championship back on track from Spain onwards.”

Mikkelsen is thought to have agreed to join Hyundai for the final rounds of the year after being promised a fulltime drive next season.

He had a successful stint with Volkswagen but found himself out of a drive when the German outfit pulled out of the WRC late last year. With most teams having contracted drivers by that stage he was forced to sit out the first few events of 2017 before joining the Citroen team for selected events this year.

They may not quite have finished top in the country, but a team of four from Ashburton Golf Club are still delighted with second place in the 2017 Women’s National Teams

Championships.

The national team members Pauline Bell, Bev Chinn, Wendy Parr and Jenny Williams won big at the Aorangi Finals earlier in the year in May, and were left to wait and see if their score would be enough to defeat the

winning clubs from other districts around the country.

In the end their score of -18.2 was only good enough for second place, just behind the winning score of Waiterimu, who posted -20.0.

final capped off a successful May for women’s golf at the Ashburton club, with the team of Vicki Moore, Hilary Ward, Wendy Parr and Pauline Bell winning the Kerr Cup for the club for the first time in nearly 80 years.

Fans finally turn en masse on Warriors By chris rattue It’s taken 23 years, and a lot of heartbreak, but the fans have finally turned en masse on the Warriors.

Even in their darkest hours, and there have been plenty, there was something appealing about a club which offered an alternative to the brooding centrally-controlled magnificence of the All Blacks. The Warriors had characters, even if they often lacked character.

Years of Warriors failure could be written off by the conspiracy theorists, as the work of biased referees and an NRL which didn’t really want the Auckland-based league club to succeed. transTasman suspicions propped them up, ridiculously.

Never mind that the Warriors were set up to be the next Brisbane Broncos, one club in a big city with football talent oozing out of every school, club, mall and corner dairy. They managed to tread a weird line, making grand statements and signings while remaining the hard-doneby little brother.

No matter that a club which has had too many owners, chief executive, coaches, first grade players and methods repeatedly aimed a gun at a foot, and would

From the outset, it has been a chapter of sometimes comical errors, from the sunny day the inaugural coach John Monie blew a huge lead by sending on an illegal replacement which saw the Warriors’ first win turn into their first public embarrassment. Wins and cock-ups have been running neck-and-neck ever since.

Monie made light of it by turning up to training the next week with a dunce’s hat on and the cone has been metaphorically passed on, from generation to generation, waiting menacingly in the background even when

it appeared the club had hit the good times.

Up it popped again last year, when chief executive Jim Doyle stretched credibility so far with the signing of a dishevelled and injured Kieran Foran that breaking point was inevitable.

It was such an outlandish Hail Mary play that Doyle’s reputation was always going to rise or fall on it, totally. Foran has gone, and so has Doyle from the dayto-day running of the club.

Up step Adam Blair and Gerard Beale, two more questionable signings, as perfectlytimed lightning rods for the fans’ fury, derision and despair after another dud season.

There are a few believers left, if you scroll through the social media comments, but they are swamped by the realists.

The Warriors need hardened props – as Kiwi great Tawera Nikau pointed out this week – but Blair is over the hill, and plays more like a part second rower.

Beale is a decent but average NRL utility back, and no game changer.

The fans have unloaded on social media, and rightly so. They know, for starters, that players only come to Auckland because they get “overs”, ie more money than they are worth because the

Warriors are desperate.

The Warriors face something far more problematic than their own incompetence now. The All Blacks are playing a brand of rugby that thrills the masses, league often looking like a game played in shackles by comparison.

Somehow, rugby league has stolen the very kick-and-clap moniker it used to beat rugby union over the head with, the bar raising Storm playmaker Cooper Cronk operating with the brave-but-soulless precision of a data gobbling robot. Johnathan Thurston and his crackling laughter is a rare beast, and maybe a disappearing one.

About the only advantage left for the Warriors is their changing line of snazzy jerseys – the All Blacks are hampered by their own brand in that regard, the sombre kit hardly a natural winner with kids. They can ride out that anomaly though, when they play with all the colours of a rainbow.

As for the Warriors, their time with an understanding, compliant audience is up. They could have signed Cameron Smith and still copped a bagging, or at least an avalanche of scepticism, after another long losing streak. Blair and Beale – they didn’t stand a chance.

The All Blacks have shown they can play fast. What they haven’t shown yet is whether they can play fast and be consistently, deadly accurate with it.

They managed that dream combination for 50 minutes in Sydney.

And they really did deliver extraordinarily good rugby in that period.

The Wallabies hardly covered themselves in glory defensively that night but it shouldn’t be used as a reason to doubt the skill and intensity of the All Blacks.

But 50 minutes isn’t much of a return from 180. No parent is over the moon when their child comes home and says they scored less than 30 per cent in a test.

That’s not cause for contentment and that is precisely the same with the All Blacks coaching team: over the last two tests the All Blacks have probably delivered, just, more good than bad but the coaches are kind of hanging out for a definitive 80 minutes that confirms what this side are all about.

Without relentless accuracy the All Blacks become a danger to themselves when they play that all out attack game.

It’s such a fine line. In Sydney, when the execution was exceptional, the Wallaby defence simply couldn’t cope with the speed and width of the attacks.

But when mistakes are made by the All Blacks when they are playing like that, they tend to be relatively easy to punish.

Look what happened in Dunedin in the first few minutes. The All Blacks had the Wallabies all over the place and men extra on the right wing.

If Damian McKenzie had floated the pass, it was going to be a try for the All Blacks. He fired it flat, though, and it was an intercept and a try to Australia. Heartened by performance Sofia Rosa’s prospects of doubling her tally at the top level have been boosted.

The five-year-old daughter of Makfi hasn’t won a race since she claimed the Gr.1 Australian Oaks, but trainer Stephen Marsh was buoyed by her recent resuming effort at Hastings.

In her first appearance for five months, Sofia Rosa struck trouble in the running before she got home well for seventh in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy and less than four lengths off the winner Close Up. “Her run was great,” Marsh said. “She got skittled at the top of the straight and lost momentum and she got to the line really well after that.”

Marsh said Sofia Rosa had come through the race well and she would return to Hawke’s Bay for the remaining two legs of the Triple Crown series.

“She’ll run in the Windsor Park and she is right on target for the Livamol Classic.”

While Marsh was delighted with Sofia Rosa’s Tarzino showing, he wasn’t quite so enthused with the effort of stablemate Thee Auld Floozie, who finished eighth.

Buster Brady (eight wins in 20 starts) posted a slick trial win at Ashburton on Tuesday, being privately clocked at just over 54sec for his last 800m as he won comfortably for driver Blair Orange over 2400m.

Austin is a full time sign-writer, but has a couple of horses in training.

The late Mike Austin started training in 1978 and produced 271 winners, 173 of them in the trotting gait.

He guided former talented freelegged pacer Nutwood (eight NZ wins) who never made the NZ Cup field because of standingstart issues.

to get Buster Brady, who only started racing in December 2015, when he won by seven-and-a-half lengths at Methven.

“He has grown into himself and looks a bit stronger. He’s a lovely, big rangy horse. He paces free legged and I only have the hopples on for race-day.

“Blair was more than happy with the way he felt and the way he finished off at Ashburton – he was rapt.’’

The five-year-old gelded son

of Real Desire, at $51 on the early fixed odds market for the NZ Cup, will probably line up in the New Brighton Cup at Addington on September 16.

“Fingers crossed he will be a better horse this season, but he did beat some good fields last season. He’s going to get better with time and hasn’t had that hard racing like a lot of other open-class horses have.’’

While Lazarus ($2.20) and Heaven Rocks ($3.60) are dominating betting on the NZ Cup, Austin says you have to be in to win.

A decision on Gold Fever’s immediate future will be made after she trials at Cambridge next week. “She’s still a bit behind in the coat and we’ll see how she goes and she could run first-up in the Gold Trail Stakes at Hastings,” co-trainer Jamie Richards said.

Argentina still on All Whites’ radar Argentina came from behind to draw 1-1 with Venezuela at home yesterday, a result that leaves the 2014 losing finalists a long way from guaranteeing their place in Russia next year.

The hosts had won all six of their previous home qualifiers against Venezuela and were expected to do the same against the team at the bottom of the South American group and without a win in 10 games.

But Argentina’s failure to take all three points left them fifth in the standings with two matches remaining – out of the top four spots which brings direct qualification for the finals.

The fifth-placed South American side will go into an intercontinental playoff against New Zealand, after the All Whites sealed their place with an 8-3 aggregate win over the Solomon Island.

Venezuela got the opening goal against Argentina just four minutes into the second half, when Jhon Murillo ran onto an incisive through ball and expertly chipped the advancing goalkeeper to give the visitors a surprise lead. The advantage, though, lasted just four minutes when a cross was knocked into his own goal by Rolf Feltscher.

Mauro Icardi had a good

shout for a penalty waved away after an hour but Argentina, with Lionel Messi not at his commanding best, looked lacklustre throughout and were unable to stamp their authority on the match.

Neither they nor Venezuela created many clear-cut chances and the home side trooped off to the boos of their disgruntled fans.

Brazil top the 10-team group and are the only South American side so far to have qualified for Russia 2018. They drew 1-1 with Colombia in a hardfought qualifier after Radamel Falcao’s second-half header cancelled out Willian’s stunning first-half volley.

Colombia have still never beaten Brazil in a World Cup qualifying match but the draw marked the first time in 10 games that Brazilian coach Tite has come away from a qualifier with anything other than all three points.

Uruguay, who won 2-1 away at Paraguay, are in secondplace with 27 points, followed

by Colombia on 26. Peru, who have not played in the World Cup Finals since 1982, beat Ecuador 2-1 earlier in the evening to move into fourth place with 24 points, ahead of Argentina on goal difference.

The Junior Zone 4 Premiership Tournament, which was being held in Ashburton, wrapped up on Tuesday evening, with the Ashburton College Junior Girls’ side finishing on a high note.

After losing a heartbreaking semi-final loss against tournament winners Kavanagh College 52-50, the side was able to bounce back with a big win in the playoff for third and fourth.

AshColl started fast against Timaru Girls’ High School, and despite a strong second quarter performance from Timaru, AshColl were able to pick up the victory 79-59.

Kavanagh won the final, taking the honours in a Dunedin derby against Otago Girls’ High School, 59-51.

Rangiora High School finished fifth, defeating Waimea College 59-44, while Waitaki Girls’ High School secured seventh with a 61-52 win against Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.

In the boys’ competition, it was Waimea College who took out top honours, taking down Otago Boys’ High School in the final, 7960.

Waitaki Boys’ High School secured third with one of the most one-sided games of the tournament, thrashing St Thomas of Canterbury College 100-45.

Nelson College grabbed fifth in a close game against King’s High School 71-69, with Middleton Grange finishing seventh after beating Marlborough Boys’ College 80-72.

The Ashburton College Junior Boys’ side finished 11th after defeating Christchurch Boys’ High School 62-57 in their final game of the tournament.

Mount Hutt College were consigned to 18th place after losing heavily to Christ’s College 56-83.

Fijian hooker Samu Suguturaga has been hit with a 20-week ban after being found guilty of biting in an Australian National Rugby Championship game. The incident happened during a game between Suguturaga’s Fijian Drua team and Brisbane City. According to the judiciary the incident took place in a scrum with Andrew Ready on the receiving end. “The hooker turned and bit my ear, as the pressure went on and there is a clear bite mark,” Ready said. “It’s lucky he was wearing a mouthguard, otherwise he would have had the whole thing.”
