Commotion erupted in Moore Street yesterday afternoon after police cars stopped a vehicle of interest on its way out of the McDonald’s drive-thru. Eight police officers in four vehicles swooped in on the silver Kia station wagon at around 1.10pm. Three males and one female were asked to leave the vehicle. One of the male occupants, aged 26, had an active warrant to arrest for failing to appear in the Christchurch and Ashburton Dis-

trict courts on drug related charges. Another male, aged 47, had an outstanding fines warrant from the Auckland District Court. Both were taken into custody, and one was heard making loud vocal complaints about his arrest. Police with gloves searched through the boot, bonnet and interior of the vehicle, and said that they located “a number of items of interest”. The remaining passengers finished their McDonald’s meal whilst talking to police in the car park and being patted

down. They were also escorted away by police in a mufti car, and police are speaking to all four about the items of interest. Harvey Norman staff were not aware what was going on, but said a number of people appeared to be driving around the car park trying to catch a glimpse of the action. Police departed the scene at around 1.50pm. In a statement at around 4.30pm, police said “no further charges have been laid at this stage”.
