Ashburton’s heritage Holy Name Catholic church will be closed for business for the next six weeks while earthquake repairs are carried out.

The solid red brick building was strengthened prior to the quakes of six years ago but still suffered interior cracking to plaster surrounding its high windows. Ashburton construction firm Bradfords is about to fix that, their painting crew blessed with a head for heights.

Father Geoff Gray said church services had been moved to Tinwald’s Holy Spirit Church which will run extra

services to accommodate parishioners.

Mass, funeral services and other celebrations would all take place at Tinwald until the work is done.

He said the work had been rescheduled several times since 2011 and the church was delighted to see it finally under way.

The job would cost around $100,000, with about a third covered by insurance.

Bradfords will repair the plaster and repaint the interior, including the sanctuary. The colour will be an offwhite, keeping in the style of the building which had a New Zealand Historic Places Trust category 1 status.

Work crews yesterday moved the pews to make way for scaffolding and placed protective plastic on wooden panelling and carpet.

Father Gray said other furniture had been moved from the church, which was last painted inside 50 years ago.

“It is a big job and we are happy the repairs are finally going ahead.”

The church, opened in 1931, was designed by Henry St Aubyn Murray of Christchurch and is considered one of the most ambitious of the Catholic churches built in the South Island in terms of permanence, beauty and scale.

Eastfield community’s preference

Eastfield has come out a clear winner in the Ashburton Guardian’s online poll aimed at gauging reader opinion on the best site for Ashburton’s new civic centre and library.

Almost 400 people voted and of those more than half said Eastfield should be the number one choice.

The four options shortlisted by consultants Opus Architecture were the site of the current civic centre on Baring Square West, the Cameron Street site occupied by the Balmoral Hall, land that is currently home to the Baring Square Church and old County Council building in Baring Square East and Eastfield, on the corner of Cass and Tancred streets.

The Guardian’s poll ran over one week with Eastfield earning itself 210 votes or 53.71 per cent of the total. The existing site gained 100 votes, 25.58 per cent with the remainder well back.

Just 40 voters, 10.23 per cent want the new complex on the Baring Square Church site, while just 17, 1.35 per cent wanted the Balmoral Hall land. Five people didn’t know.

Among those who voted, the level of interest and awareness of the project was high with only 19 out of 210 391 saying they were not interested in the projected.

The community’s views run counter to those of the consultants who gave the Methodist Church site their preferred site tick. It put Eastfield as its second choice and the existing site third.

Interest in the project is high, with Opus receiving between 15 and 20 completed survey forms each day.

In addition well over 100 people have filled in the on-line survey on the Ashburton District Council’s website, www.ashburtondc. govt.nz Stage two of consultation on the project closes on September 14.

Methven people pick up tab

A public fund set up to pay for a Methven townsman looks like reaching its target of $16,000.

Residents and business people angry about the untidy state of their town have crowdfunded a part-time wage for former townsman Steve Williams, who lost his job with ACL when the Ashburton District Council contracted another company to empty rubbish bins and keep the streets clean.

They say Williams did an ex-

ceptional job and want him back; they say the basic service being provided by council is not good enough.

Nearly 100 people have pledged money to a public fund to pay Williams until next year when Methven will lobby for a higher level of service.

Methven businessmen Mark Jacobs and Gary Eddington launched a campaign last week on Facebook to raise the $16,000.

Jacobs said some individuals had committed to a one-off

donation and others to smaller weekly payments. He was confident the target would be met and would confirm that to council this week.

Council in return would use the money to employ Williams and would also provide him with a vehicle.

Jacobs said the crowdfunding had been supported by the whole community.

“We’ve had little old ladies coming in with their $20 and then other individuals coming up

with $400. This is a community that gets behind things they want to have done and need to have done.”

Methven people and tourism operators had been concerned an untidy town was a bad look for tourists.

Jacobs said the public fund was only intended as an interim measure and the town would lobby council to provide a higher level of service as part of its Annual Plan process for 2017-18.

“It’s not ideal but we have a

process we have to follow to change things.”

A council sub-contractor will work extra hours in the town until Williams is back on deck.

He picked up 15 hours a week cleaning for council after he lost his job with ACL and the community money will ensure he has more hours to keep the town spotless again.

Jacobs said Williams had been blown away by the community support and was looking forward to getting his job back.

■ TINWALD SCHOOL

A milestone in Life Education Children at Tinwald School were learning yesterday about what makes healthy bodies, just like children in their shoes 25 years ago.

The healthy body message was being delivered by Life Education educator Rudi Keggenhoff and Harold the giraffe, in a high-tech mobile classroom – back in 1991, Tinwald was the first Mid Canterbury school to host the Life Education classroom and the milestone was celebrated this month.

The mobile classroom has been upgraded a couple of times since 1991; over the years it has travelled thousands of kilometres around Mid and South Canter-

bury, visiting 64 schools and 8000 children annually.

The 25th annual Life Education dinner in Ashburton last Friday celebrated the unique programme and was attended by special guests including Life Education national service representative Jenny Boyd and Elizabeth and Richard Ashford, the first Harold Club members in Ashburton. The club supports the trust’s work in our district.

The programme costs over $100,000 a year to deliver and is funded through fundraising and grants.

The mobile classroom is at Tinwald School until Thursday.

Ashburton house prices continue to climb

New turf at Mt Hutt College Students at Mt Hutt College will soon be working up a sweat on the school’s new multi-purpose turf.

The asphalt tennis and netball courts at the school have been replaced with artificial turf in a $100,000 project that began in July.

Principal John Schreurs said contractors were waiting for the turf to dry so they could cut and glue in court markings for tennis, netball and half a hockey pitch.

The courts will be used by sports teams for training and games, and by PE classes during school time. A sand-based turf

made voluntary donations to the project.

“It is much appreciated and their generosity means we can help the school to provide students and our community with these great facilities.”

She said the PTA was a great way to contribute to the school as well as a great way to meet other parents. “It’s a real pleasure to know that we can help make these ideas a reality for our kids, future students and our community.”

The turf should be ready for action by the start of Term 4, in a month’s time.

Queenstown continues to be the fastest growing area in the South Island with prices up 27.2 per cent year-on-year. The average price of a home sold in that area is now $930,154. Clutha retains its title as the cheapest area in the south to buy, with an average price of $177,575.

At the other end of the scale, the number of areas in New Zealand where the average current value has topped $1 million continues to grow. There are now nine areas that sold above that level, with the most expensive $1,466,887 in Auckland City east.

The greens brought him back to Ashburton

One of the youngest greenkeepers in New Zealand is settling into his new job in Ashburton.

Ben Crequer began his job with Ashburton Golf Course two months ago and has been loving the work.

Crequer, another fulltime greenkeeper and a number of volunteers look after the 48.5 hectare area.

He said a lot of their work goes into maintaining the grass through mowing and spraying to get rid of diseases and pests.

The 24-year-old and former Ashburton College student decided he wanted to get into keeping greens while on placement during his sports and recreation management degree at Lincoln University.

During his 12 weeks of practi-

cal placement where he helped coach some cricket teams, he was also tasked with looking after the cricket grounds.

“It was then I realised I really liked the turf side of things and decided to start studying turf papers by correspondence,” he said.

He wrote letters to a number of clubs to see if they’d help fund his studies and a couple came back and contributed.

After working for New Zealand Cricket at the Hagley Oval for a number of years he was offered a job at the Ashburton Golf Course.

Crequer said he was excited to have the opportunity to look after the golf course and work back in his home town of Ashburton.

“What I just enjoy the most about the job is being able to work outside, there’s always people around to have a yarn to,” he said.

Our wireless broadband product uses the 4G mobile network and allows customers fast, reliable and affordable internet access. This is key for people who currently lack access to an adequate fixed internet service,” Deavoll said.

Customers will need to have a 4G-capable mobile device to connect to 4G.

Doggy-do’s could earn $300 fine

Education rather than a heavy handed approach is the best tool when it comes to ensuring dog owners play by the rules, says an Ashburton District Council department manager.

Environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle says he won’t be following Christchurch City’s lead in imposing a $300 fine on dog owners who are not carrying bags to pick up droppings their pets leave behind.

“They’re making a rod for their own back with this. A dog owner can go out with a bag, use it and then they’re seen without it and then they could be fined. It’ll be very difficult enforcing this,” Catchpowle said.

In Ashburton, the council believed education and information

were key, rather than enforcement, he said.

“The onus is on the dog owner to clean up after their dog and if they don’t and they’re seen, then this is what we follow up on.”

If a council staff member spotted a dog owner leaving a pet’s dog droppings on the pavement or park they would be spoken to and the requirements of the dog control by-law explained. If they were caught a second time then a fine might be imposed, Catchpowle said.

Ashburton dog owners could face a fine of $300 for this offence.

“We’re working to help people understand what their responsibilities are as dog owners and part of that is having bags and dispensers in dog exercise areas. It’s all about helping people rather than prosecuting them.”

Rubbish litters Wakanui Beach Even though Wakanui Beach has a sign stating rubbish is to be taken away when visitors leave, collections of rubbish can be seen along the shore line.

A post on the Facebook group Ashburton Notice Board showed piles of burned rubbish, a broken computer and bags lying on

the beach. Many comments on the post say this has been a long running issue on the beach and one comment says Lowcliffe Beach faces the same fate.

Houses lie empty

Almost five per cent of Ashburton’s state houses are sitting empty and untenanted.

Across the district Housing New Zealand owns 186 properties, but currently nine of those are vacant, with two likely to be out of the letting pool for some time because of contamination from methamphetamine.

Four are listed as short-term vacancies – one is ready to let and three are under repair and another is listed as a long-term vacancy without a specific reason.

Two Ashburton houses are listed as pending sale.

HNZ media spokesperson Glenn Conway described Ashburton as an area of relatively low demand in terms of social housing and said the vacant properties were not tenanted for a variety of reasons.

“These could include that they have been identified for sale because of low demand, are contaminated with methamphetamine and require costly and lengthy decontamination or are undergoing our routine main-

tenance between tenancies.”

A tough line is taken with HNZ tenants if they are found to be involved in the manufacture or use of methamphetamine will have their tenancy terminated.

Any property suspected of contamination is tested and remediated as necessary.

It can take up to three months to clear a property.

When one tenancy ended and before another begun, properties were inspected to make sure there was no tenant damage and any maintenance work was carried out before a new tenant moved in. This created the short-term vacancies, Mr Conway said.

House vacant and pending sale includes those for sale under the First Home Ownership Scheme, and the Tenant Home Ownership programme.

Demand for social housing is managed by the Ministry of Social Development which manages the Social Housing Register (formerly called the waiting list) and assesses social housing applicants and the type of property they are suited to.

Court dismisses kidnapping appeal The Supreme Court has upheld a woman’s kidnapping and blackmail convictions for forcing a man to empty his bank account at an ATM. In 2014 a Napier District Court jury found Sara-Jane Skeet guilty on two counts of blackmail, one of kidnapping and one charge of aggravated robbery.

Skeet appealed and had her aggravated robbery conviction quashed but the Court of Appeal upheld her other convictions.

She took the matter to the Supreme Court.

The Crown alleged Skeet threatened the victim by saying she would harm him and/ or his disabled daughter if he did not give her money and other assistance, so thereby committed blackmail.

Skeet argued on appeal that a threat of actual violence was not a qualifying threat and referred to a previous case but the Court of

Appeal did not accept her submissions.

In the Supreme Court, Skeet’s lawyer Chris Tennet argued her reasoning was correct but the court found “the phrase has a plain meaning, which encompasses threats of both direct and indirect harm”.

Regarding the kidnapping conviction, the Crown alleged Skeet and an associate threatened the victim with violence, stole his phone, forced to drive to an ATM and withdraw all his money.

They were followed by Skeet’s associate and the victim withdrew $2000 and gave it to her.

Tennet submitted the trial judge failed to instruct the jury that if the victim went with Skeet voluntarily, she could not be convicted of kidnapping. The Court of Appeal rejected this argument.

The appeals were dismissed.

Hockey players out fundraising Twenty-one young boys from around Mid Canterbury are learning a valuable life lesson – nothing comes without a bit of work.

The boys are some of the district’s top age group hockey players and next month will head to Christchurch to compete as members of the Mid Canterbury under 13 team in the national hockey tournament, the Hatch Cup. It will cost about $12,000 to transport and accommodate the 21 players in Christchurch during the event and fundraising organiser Angela Farr said the team members were raising as much of the money as they could.

“It’s important for them to know that the money doesn’t just come out of their parents’ pockets,” she said.

The Hatch Cup will be played in Christchurch from October 3 – 8, with 24 teams from around New Zealand competing.

Closing remarks made at Taiaroa murder trial The Crown has made its closing remarks in the stop-go murder trial, declaring there is only one conclusion the jury could reach - that it was Quinton Winders who killed George Taiaroa.

Crown solicitor Amanda Gordon led the closing address, reiterating key points made in the five-week trial of Winders, the man accused of murdering Taiaroa.

Taiaroa was shot and killed while he worked as a stop-go operator at roadworks near Atiamuri in 2013.

Gordon said there were crucial things which linked Winders to the murder.

These included his blue Jeep Cherokee, CCTV footage showing Winders could have been at the scene at the right time, his .22 rifle that matched what is believed to be the murder weapon, his contact with Taiaroa a week prior on March 12, 2013, the fact he lied to police and that he lied to his employer Kieron O’Dwyer

about his whereabouts.

She said while the Crown’s case was circumstantial, “when the evidence is combined it clearly establishes the defendant is the murderer”.

Gordon said elements in the case were certainties.

She also addressed suggestions by Winders’ lawyer Jonathan Temm of the murder being a case of mistaken identity and the other stop-go worker, Michael Pengelly, was the intended target.

Prior to the murder, Pengelly had been confronted by two Mongrel Mob members.

“There is no evidence that this is the case. In fact police have evidence that led to those two men being eliminated from the investigation.

“The Crown suggests you could not get two more different looking men. Taiaroa was a large Maori who was bald. You have seen Mr Pengelly, he has a small stature with long scraggly hair.

Gordon said Winders told a number of lies about his movements the day Taiaroa was shot.

Many of these were heard in his interview with police.

The interview was held on April 4, 2013 after Winders was arrested for reckless driving.

Gordon drew the jury’s attention to Winders’ confusion about the “traffic stop” but not the fact police wanted to talk to him about a murder.

Gordon said Winders’ account needed to be contrasted further still with another account he gave to O’Dwyer, saying he panicked when he found out police were looking for a blue Jeep Cherokee and a .22 rifle.

Gordon told the jury Winders’ account of having his .22 rifles stolen in 2009 was another lie to police.

She said despite Winders telling police he had reported the theft, there was no evidence of him doing so.

She described his account of

the firearms being stolen from his gun safe as “incredible”.

Gordon said Winders also lied about the whereabouts of his .22 rifle to Mr O’Dwyer.

Winders explained it had been stolen by ‘Bigfoot’, a neighbour over the hill, when he left it outside.

Gordon also addressed the minor crash on March 12, 2013 which Winders was involved.

A note found at Winders’ parents’ home appeared to denounce any responsibility for the crash, claimed the family knew nothing about it and that their trailer had gone missing, probably stolen, a while back.

“If the crash was such a nonevent, why would Winders write that note?”

Gordon said it followed a general theme.

“Whenever evidence points to his guilt, [Winders] says it’s been stolen - the trailer, his .22 rifle, his spare wheel.”

A truck carrying dangerous goods crashed near Taupo yesterday, partly blocking the road. A police spokeswoman said police were called to Rotongaio Rd, Waitahanui, 13km south of Taupo, at 12.13pm. Elderly man on run An elderly man alleged to have defrauded women in Whanganui is on the run after failing to appear in court. Police said William Harding, in his mid-70s, is from Whanganui but could now be anywhere, including Wellington. Harding had been wanted since he failed to turn up for a court hearing on August 9.

At his first appearance in the Whanganui District Court, Harding pleaded not guilty to two charges of obtaining by deception and one charge of causing loss by deception. The three alleged victims were women over 60. -AP

Liquor store arrests Five people, including a 12-yearold boy, have been charged over a series of aggravated robberies at a Mt Roskill liquor store. The Liquor Legends store was robbed on July 20 and 23, and on August 13. Four of them are appeared in court yesterday afternoon. The 12-yearold will appear today. Police said they had advised the owners of the shop, who were relieved to hear the news.

Obama first US president to visit Laos President Barack Obama on Monday became the first sitting US president to step foot in the isolated Southeast Asian nation of Laos, opening a three-day visit meant to rebuild trust and close a dark chapter in the shared history between the two countries.

Obama is one of several world leaders coming to the country of nearly 7 million people, as it hosts the annual meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Under a steady, tropical rain, Obama arrived and began a full day of ceremony and diplomacy with a meeting with Laotian President Bounnhang Vorachit.

The visit comes during what is probably Obama’s final trip as president to Southeast Asia.

Obama’s frequent visits to oftignored corners of the Asia Pacific have been central to his strategy for countering China’s growing dominance in the region.

In a bizarre turn of events, Islamic State fighters are now banning women from wearing burkas in security centres in the northern Iraqi city of Monsul and have declared the full-face veils are now a security risk.

You can’t start on the property ladder at the top Sue Newman

uying your first home is a rite of passage that people once took for granted. It was never a case of if, it was just when.

But that’s all changed. Today’s 20 somethings could well be the first generation of New Zealanders for whom home ownership will always remain a dream. Some will realise that dream, the ones with high paid jobs, with families who can help bridge the deposit gap or those who don’t care how much debt they’re carrying.

For the rest it could well be a case of renting for life. And that has never been the Kiwi way.

The latest QV figures tell the story. While the average value of a house sold in the Ashburton District is around $350,000, in Auckland, the average is now more than $1 million. Even with Auckland salaries home ownership is an impossible goal.

In just a couple of generations we’ve gone from the quarter acre, pavlova paradise that everyone could afford, to high spec homes on small lots that half of us will never be able to afford unless we’re prepared to sell our souls to the bank.

Yes, Auckland and Queenstown’s prices might be eyewateringly high, but in places like Ashburton, buying your own is still affordable. It’s all about expectations.

Once, first home buyers set the bar low, they were reasonable in their expectations, in terms of both location and the house itself. They knew that home number one would be modest, it might be old and it would probably be a doer-upper, but it was somewhere to put down roots, the first step towards something better.

Today there are no steps. Many first home buyers expect to leap to the top. They want new, they want big and they want it landscaped and well furnished – immediately. In exchange they take on a mortgage that would make their parents choke.

Young home buyers start at the top, but where do they go from there? If interest rates rise, their work circumstances change, there’s only one way and that’s down, selling on what could be a falling market and ending up out of pocket.

Far better to set the bar a little lower and work your way up.

three plans, which I am led to believe, went out to the public for consultation.

This cost taxpayers huge amounts of money and councillors an enormous amount of time.

The main aim of this I believe was to future-proof the “Civic Centre” as it is today, so why are any other locations even coming into the equation?

Was all our work just a silly waste of time and money? Is there no continuity in council?

If the Civic Building needs to be rebuilt, why not use all the facilities the council presently owns, while the present building is demolished and rebuilt on its present site, and remaining in the Civic Centre.

Once the Civic Building is complete, get rid of the villa and use the site for additional car parking, then rebuild the library on its same site, again keeping it in the Civic Centre along with the the Art Gallery and Museum.

The library could be housed in the old County Council Build-

ing, while the new, more userfriendly, for today and hopefully for the future library is built, and then the council could sell off the old County Council Building and recoup a bit of money.

This would mean that the Civic Centre as provided for would remain in one area of town, prominent, easily accessible with plenty of parking for the many people, who find it necessary to access it, for whatever reason, instead of being stuck in the middle of town, in the business area, with difficult access and limited parking in comparison.

I believe the business area should be kept as the business area, and the civic area should be kept as the civic area.

Let the church do what it wants with its own property.

It is a great building to have overlooking the area of Baring Square East with the statues of our forefathers.

Let us have a well-planned town, not a disjointed town.

International hub for VR opens One of New Zealand’s rapidly developing industries, augmented and virtual reality, has found a home in Auckland’s city fringe.

In a spacey warehouse on Eden Terrace, the augmented reality/ virtual reality AR/VR Garage has been set up, with rooms full of headgear, consoles, screens and space to play.

The building will be a hub for technology companies and individuals looking to create projects using the equipment, and is part of Auckland Council’s GridAKL innovation precinct. The council has invested an initial $20 million across 10 years for the precinct.

Home to the likes of game developers, screen and film producers, animators, educators and digital storytellers, it will also help to grow New Zealand’s footprint

and entice jobs and investment.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development chief executive Brett O’Riley said the Garage would provide research and development space for teams around the world to collaborate, and a dedicated area to showcase New Zealand AR/VR innovation.

“The Garage enables companies to have a global advantage from day one, and that is hugely important in this fast-paced technology sector,” O’Riley said.

“They can scale up much faster, connect with the big international industry players, and showcase their work to major international tech investors,” he said.

“While the Garage is a great boost for Auckland’s world-leading screen, digital and creative content industries, VR is becom-

The innovation hub already has ten tenant companies, and will have another ten by the end of October.

Partners of the facility have enabled its tenants to have subsidies access to technology and tools, connect with potential working partners and source local and international contracts.

Biggest mistakes made by Millennials Millennials get a bad rap for being the me-focused generation who want everything now without having to wait.

But financial advisers say getting into debt and spending more than you earn in your 20s are some of the biggest money mistakes young people can make and it can set you up for a life-time of poor financial decisions.

Sharon Giblett, a Taurangabased financial adviser who has a daughter in her 20s, says many young people make the mistake of focusing on today and forgetting about tomorrow.

“It’s about the wants – they aren’t thinking ahead to the consequences.”

Giblett says an example of that is delaying signing up to KiwiSaver which could make it harder to buy a house in your 30s or have a comfortable retirement.

Giblett says for many young people saving is at the bottom of their priority list – they want to go to the pub or buy new clothes.

“And nobody has probably told them here are the dos and don’t.”

She also advocates avoiding a big student loan if possible.

While some people have successfully managed to use student loans to start a business or buy a house others fritter it on consumable items.

“If you just use it to fund pub spending then obviously that’s not sensible.”

She says students should try to start paying back their loan while still studying or better yet avoid getting one at all if possible by saving up ahead of time.

She says save first is the top tip she would give to all young people.

Auckland-based financial adviser Simon Hassan believes the biggest mistake for those in their 20s is spending more than what they earn.

“Not only do they start what can become a life-long addiction to debt, those who spend more than they earn miss out on the most valuable early savings years.

“Compound interest means that one dollar saved in your 20s adds as much to your retirement

income as three or four dollars saved in your 60s.”

His advice for young people is to sign up to KiwiSaver and start saving from your first job and invest in a growth fund.

“Even on the average wage this should see you build a nest egg worth $435,000 of today’s dollars by age 65.

“That’s enough to almost double your NZ Super through a 25 to 30-year retirement.

Peter Lee, principal of financial advice firm C2C Partners, who also has two children in their 20s, says young people often act like they are bullet-proof.

“That is part of being 20 ... they tend to think they are bullet-proof ... which is a fantastic attitude to have.”

But he says they also need to do some planning for the future.

Whether it is how they will get the most out of their career or save for a house.

His best tip: “Make the most of KiwiSaver. If you have got a chance to be in it, join it.”

Dumplings, simply delicious T

1/3 – ½ C cider vinegar 2C of chicken or vege stock Salt and pepper to season

here’s nothing quite like a delicious gravy-soaked dumplings as far as comfort food goes and they come with the added benefit of making meals go further.

Mix and match the veges in these recipes up to your liking and create one-pot meals in no time.

■ Brown pork pieces and onion in heavy pan.

■ Place all other ingredients in large saucepan and simmer on stove-top until meat is tender.

■ Add a handful of chopped coriander to basic dumpling mix if desired.

■ Drop dumpling mix into simmering stew spoon by spoon. Cover and cook for a further 15-20 minutes.

Basic dumpling recipe for four servings 1 cup plain flour 2T baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1T butter ½ cup milk

Vegetable and pearl barley casserole with cheesy dumplings

■ Mix all ingredients in a bowl and chop in butter.

2 large onions, peeled and chopped 2-3 cloves of garlic, crushed 1C chopped swede or turnip 2 parsnips, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 3C vegetable stock 1/2 C cider vinegar 1 bay leaf A handful of chopped herbs of your choosing Salt and pepper to season Oil for browning ½ C grated tasty cheese for dumplings

Slow cooker chicken and dumplings 1 or 2 skinned chicken pieces per serving 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 2 large carrots, roughly chopped 2-3 stalks of celery, chopped 2-3 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped A knob of fresh ginger, grated 2 C chicken stock 1 C of water

Beef casserole and dumplings.

■ Place all ingredients in slow cooker and cook until chicken is tender.

■ Add a handful of finely chopped herbs of your choice to the basic dumpling mix and stir through.

■ Drop spoonfuls of dumpling mix into the simmering mixture and cook uncovered for 15-20 minutes.

Serves four 500gm stewing or braising steak, chopped 2 onions, peeled and chopped 2-3 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed 2C chopped root vegetables carrot/swede/parsnip/yams 2-3 stalks of chopped celery 500ml beef stock Dash of cider vinegar Worcestershire sauce to taste 1/2 T mustard powder Plain flour for dusting Salt and pepper to season Oil for browning

■ Cook onion and garlic in a heavy pan over a medium heat.

■ Douse meat in plain flour and add piece by piece to the pan.

Cook until brown, turning constantly ■ Add prepared vegetables to a large casserole dish with all other ingredients.

■ Place meat and onion mixture on top.

■ Cover and cook in oven at about 180°C for about two hours or until meat is tender.

■ Add basic dumpling mix to simmering casserole in spoonfuls,

adding boiling water if required, return to oven and cook uncovered for a further 15-20 minutes.

Pork stew with dumplings 750gm diced pork 1 C each sliced carrot and parsnip 1 C of chopped granny smith apples 2 onions, peeled and chopped 2-3 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 knob of fresh ginger, grated 1T chopped sage

■ Cook onion in heavy ovenproof pan until transparent. Add barley and liquids and cook for about 20 minutes.

■ Add all other ingredients, cover and simmer for about 40 minutes or until barley and vegetables are tender.

■ Omit butter in basic dumpling mix and replace with cheese.

■ Drop spoon by spoon into simmering vegetable mixture.

■ Place casserole in an oven preheated to 180°C and cook uncovered for about 20 minutes until the dumplings are golden.

Defence ‘a personal thing’ Mid Canterbury fell to a last-gasp 34-32 loss to Buller on game day two of the Heartland Championship in Westport on Saturday.

With the teams tied in the 80th minute, 2014 Heartland Player of the Year James Lash’s drop goal separated the sides at the death.

Ashburton Guardian sports reporter James Ford caught up with Mid Canterbury co-coach Craig Dunlea to discuss the defeat.

After being up 16-0 early on in the first half, what do you feel Mid Canterbury could have done better in keeping Buller out for the remainder of the first 40 minutes?

We started very well and had very good line speed on defence that created a lot of pressure on Buller when they had the ball.

We controlled the ball and game on attack and stuck to our game plan for the opening 20 minutes of the game, we then went away from everything that was going well for us after that point.

First five James Lash is obviously a key man for Buller after returning from a season with Tasman, how much of an influence did he have on the day?

Mid Canterbury co-coach Craig Dunlea is expecting a shift in intensity and attitude at training this week.

To be honest he only had an influence because we let him.

In the opening 15 to 20 minutes we controlled the game so he could not influence anything.

Then we switched off and fell

away from the things we were controlling and doing well – this is when he started to have more influence on the game.

How would you sum up Mid Canterbury’s defensive perfor-

mance in Westport?

I believe defence is personal, so there will be some players that need a look at themselves.

We lost our line speed and defensive shape, we missed far too many tackles and players did not stick to our systems, so we leaked easy tries.

Do you feel this loss will have an effect on the players’ confidence?

Not really because when we stick to our shapes and patterns we create many opportunities and the players see and realise this as well.

We just need to be smarter and keep our focus for the whole game.

Is there anything in particular that you feel Mid Canterbury need to improve on before playing Wairarapa Bush next week?

To be honest, the boys were really hurting after the game.

They felt they had let themselves, their team-mates and the province down.

So I would be very surprised if there wasn’t a real shift in intensity and attitude at training this week.

A new name for the Super Rugby scouts

By CampBell Burnes Like several other fringe Super Rugby players who saw little game time in the first half of 2016, Sam Vaka is playing like he is as fresh as a daisy.

The 23-year-old centre saw just 36 minutes of Chiefs action across three games, strange when you consider the injury issues they suffered in the midfield.

But we have seen the true Vaka stand tall in the last two games, both with and without the ball, as the Counties Manukau Steelers have overcome a scratchy Mitre 10 Cup opening to rise to second on the Premiership table.

“I used my time at the Chiefs as a learning curve and tried to carry it into Mitre 10, doing the lit-

tle things and not getting too far ahead of myself,” says the Wesley and Sacred Heart old boy.

Vaka is non-committal about his rugby after the Mitre 10 Cup, as he is uncontracted.

Sevens, having played four tournaments for New Zealand in 2014-15, is an option should he miss the cut, but he hasn’t thought that far ahead.

In any case, a continuation of his recent form will arouse interest from Super Rugby coaches.

His team try against the Magpies in the crushing 48-20 win was one of the best of the season.

It was confirmation, if any were needed, that centre is his preferred position after taking one for the team and shifting to the wing for the narrow loss to North Harbour.

Sam Vaka Now the focus shifts to the Wellington Lions who come to Pukekohe on Friday night to contest the inaugural Jonah Lomu Memorial Trophy.

“Jonah was a humble, well respected guy who started off here in Counties.

“The boys are keen to put in a good performance because Jonah was one of our own.

“Growing up, Jonah was always the guy that every island kid looked up to.

“I first saw him play when I was about six or seven,” Vaka says.

A likely midfield match-up with Shaun Treeby and Matt Proctor will keep Vaka and second five Cardiff Vaega on their toes.

“It’ll be a really tough day at the office with two Super Rugby midfielders.

“They are both on form.

“I’ll need to do a lot of things well, like catch and pass.”

Auckland wary of wounded Magpies Four days after playing Southland in Invercargill, Auckland coach Nick White has named his side for tonight’s Mitre 10 Cup Premiership clash against Hawke’s Bay in Napier.

The departure of three All Blacks forwards has seen a reshuffle up front, with only one change in the backline.

Props Tom McHugh and Marcel Renata are in line for their first starts in the blue and white hoops, lock Michael Fatialofa starts in his blazer match, while

Liaki Moli returns to the 23 and will play in the No 6 jersey, where he played for the Sunwolves, for the first time for Auckland.

“It’s good for guys like Fats to get a start.

“Leni (Seu) was supposed to have time on the bench on Friday and that didn’t turn out, so Liaki starts at six,” said White.

“It’s a great opportunity for Tom and Marcel to start.

“The work that they have done in the last 12 months is the reason why they have this chance.

They need to make the most of it.”

Jono Hickey comes into the starting XV at halfback for the first time this season.

“With three games in 10 days it’s a good chance to get Jono out there. It will be a good match-up with Brad Weber for him and to get a good run.”

White said he and his team are wary of a Magpies side who are

yet to claim a victory this season.

“It’s going to be a huge game for us.

“We’ve got to make sure we are patient, control the ball when we’ve got it; it’s a good challenge.”

On the bench, Pakuranga prop James Lay is set to debut while clubmate Ben Nee Nee will get his first match for 2016. Fullback Tyrone Elkington-MacDonald will play against his 2015 union.

Auckland lost 17-12 to Hawke’s Bay last season in a Ranfurly Shield challenge.

Australia and South Africa are in similar situations ahead of Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test at Suncorp with both teams under huge pressure to account for recent poor displays and show improvement. Brumbies sign Alcock The Brumbies have signed veteran openside flanker Chris Alcock for the 2017 Super Rugby season to help fill the hole left by David Pocock. The 28-year-old Alcock has had seven seasons in Super Rugby, three with the NSW Waratahs and the last four with the Western Force. He is likely to be a straight replacement for Wallabies star Pocock, who is taking a 12-month sabbatical from the competition to play in Japan and pursue other opportunities. - AAP

All Blacks suspects?

In what some might see as a bizarre twist in the story, New South Wales police have not ruled out the possibility that a listening device found in the All Blacks hotel in Sydney last month could have come from within the New Zealand camp. The Sydney Morning Herald said police were still exploring every avenue and said they will treat every possibility, no matter how far-fetched it may sound, seriously.

Fitness test for Mitchell Drew Mitchell’s involvement in Australia’s Rugby Championship clash with South Africa hinges on his ability to complete a gruelling day of training. The veteran wing has not played for five months because of persistent groin problems but is likely to be parachuted into Saturday night’s Test at Suncorp Stadium if he can get through the full-contact session at Ballymore unscathed. “I think we may have turned the corner, things are going alright,” Mitchell said.

Intense pressure finally tells Sir Gordon Tietjens dished out plenty of pain to his players in nearly a quarter of a century as New Zealand sevens coach.

But it was the 60-year-old feeling the burn over the past year, leading to his retirement.

The end of one of New Zealand’s most enduring and decorated sporting reigns was confirmed yesterday, marking the end of Tietjens’ 23 seasons in charge.

He says it is time for fresh ideas in the wake of his team’s shock quarter-final exit at the Rio Olympics.

The man who steered New Zealand to four successive Commonwealth Games gold medals up until 2010, along with victory in 12 of the 17 world series crowns, says his final campaign still stung.

However, he says it wasn’t the reason for his exit.

He would have gone if they had won a gold medal.

“It’s sad in a way but a huge relief,” he said.

“My dream was always to go to Rio but it’s been a hugely stressful year.

“There is a bit of stress because of the expectation with any All

For so long a dominant sevens force, New Zealand’s stocks have waned since a run of four successive Commonwealth Games gold medals under Tietjens turned to silver at Delhi in 2014.

They have finished third in the last two world series and the Rio disaster – not helped by a crippling injury toll – included a loss to minnows Japan.

Tietjens says Rio was a reflection of how sevens has trans-

formed since his low- key appointment as coach in 1994.

He led New Zealand to victory at their only tournament that year, in Hong Kong.

“We’ve all seen how competitive it is now,” he said.

“The game is ruthless.

“It comes down to defining moments.

“I gave it everything in Rio and you can’t ask for more than that.

“You’ve given (the players) the ammunition and they’ve gone out but they haven’t performed.

“That’s sevens rugby and it’s going to happen.”

Tietjens’ role changed as increasing resources were poured into the abbreviated game.

However, he never gave up his self-appointed role as team fitness trainer and nutritionist, earning a reputation as a hard taskmaster.

Not surprisingly, Tietjens rates former All Blacks greats Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen as the best players he worked with.

He also lauds the influence of some of his captains, most notably Eric Rush, Karl Te Nana, Liam Messam and DJ Forbes.

Tietjens estimates more than 40 players under his watch have gone on to play test rugby, something which gave him pride and which he expects will continue.

Winning the Wellington leg of the world series tournament nine times were a highlight but couldn’t eclipse the sensation of hearing the national anthem played at the Commonwealth Games, he said.

Tietjens wants to remain involved in sevens rugby but is not sure how. He is looking forward to a break in his home town of Tauranga.

All Blacks out to turn up the pace

It paved the way for their three victories over Wales in June and was even more evident in their recent Bledisloe Cup destruction of the Wallabies.

Now the challenge for them is to continue their high-tempo, skills-based game against Argentina and the Springboks, starting with the Pumas at Waikato Stadium on Saturday.

Blacks because of the grounding each individual gets as a young school or club player.

In this way they have an automatic advantage over the rest of the rugby-playing world.

It’s also fun to play and very difficult to combat when done properly.

The All Blacks, on a 13-win streak including another World Cup victory, lost more than 800 test caps following that memorable final victory against Australia at Twickenham last November, but have gone to a new level regardless.

That’s due to the onus on every player in the squad to improve their fitness and skills.

Tight forwards are expected to handle the ball like backs, likewise backs are expected to do the heavy lifting at the breakdown like forwards.

It’s a multi-faceted approach keeping the All Blacks ahead and a stimulating environment to be a part of, according to lock Sam Whitelock.

“As a tight forward it’s awesome to challenge yourself in that

area,” he said. “We’re always trying to improve – that [improved skill level] is an area we’ve highlighted lately.

“If we can get growth there we can probably get an advantage.”

Ben Smith, the fullback used to a high-tempo and ambitious game plan with the Highlanders, said: “In any team you’re involved in you enjoy it when the game is played at speed and the players get a chance to test their skills.

“That’s the team you want to be a part of – you always have to be on your game and looking for opportunities.

“That’s a big part of our game.”

Assistant coach Ian Foster is reluctant to acknowledge the All Blacks have gone to a new level since their World Cup victory.

In between the white noise of the team’s apparent free rein from match officials and citing commissioners, even the critics in the Northern Hemisphere admit the All Blacks are out on their own at the moment, but Foster said his team’s game remained a work in progress.

“I know people are excited that we’re getting to a new level,” he said.

“I think we’re getting there, I don’t think we’re there yet.

“It’s a credit to the guys we’ve lost – the work that they have put into the culture of this team that when they’ve left it’s carrying on trucking.

“They get a big pat on the back.

“The leadership group going forward particularly get a big

pat on the back because [Kieran Read] Reado and Ben and those guys are leading it in their own style and it suits this group.

“It’s very inclusive and encompasses I guess the new guys and the enthusiasm they bring.

“They are working really hard to make sure it’s not an environment that becomes oppressive because of the pressure on it.”

“We don’t what to judge ourselves mid-championship on how well we’re going, we want to judge ourselves at the end.

“But the overall signs are positive.

“I don’t think we’ve tinkered with the fundamental part of it and the importance of core roles and core skill work, but we’ve probably added a few variations ... because we see the game suited us to become a high-tempo skill-based game.”

The Pumas, who will go into Saturday’s test following a victory over the Springboks, will try to slow the All Blacks down, especially at the breakdown, Foster suggested.

“We do know the Argentines are one team we often struggle to get quick ball from.

“It’s clearly their objective to slow down everything we do.

“When we’ve really struggled with them in the past is moving their big bodies and their intention to slow everything down.

We’ve got to make sure we get that tempo going and that we can play our game because otherwise it becomes a real bunfight.”

Tietjens won’t be forgotten, that’s for sure.

Very few international coaches last more than two decades as he has done, or get knighted.

His name will be synonymous with a game that will almost certainly grow and grow thanks to Olympics inclusion – and he played his part in getting it there.

Who knows: one day it may overtake 15s internationally.

Life with the stars ...

All Black Eric Rush was reinvented as a sevens superstar and was Tietjens irreplaceable right-hand man ... other names to grace the team included Christian Cullen, Jonah Lomu, Joe Rokocoko, Ben Smith, Israel Dagg and quite a few more.

The Olympics ...

Rugby finally made it to the stage Tietjens coveted, and his team absolutely bombed.

Not even a medal ... and the signs hadn’t been good for some time.

The rest of the world had caught up and even overtaken the old master, and he lacked fresh thinking to do anything about it.

Wellington sevens ... the early years.

It took four attempts to win the home prize, that first win coming in 2003.

New Zealand lost to the wonderful Fijians in the inaugural 2000 final, when fans poured into the new Westpac Stadium to watch a squad which included Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen.

Tietjens’ side didn’t even make the 2001 and 2002 finals.

Star struck ...

Tietjens lost access to his 15s stars and rising stars, who he saw as essential to success.

His sevens team was once considered a key path to uncovering exceptional 15s talent. By the end, it was a side show largely unconnected to the All Blacks.

Young talent to the fore The Ashburton College senior girls’ basketball team returned from the South Island Secondary Schools qualifying tournament pleased with their 11th place finish.

Although not the top six finish they were working towards this season, the girls’ sights had to be adjusted slightly two weeks prior to tournament when they were bumped into the “pool of death” with favourites Rangi Ruru and St Hilda’s Collegiate.

With the College girls needing to win three of their four pool games to have a shot at the top six, they got off to a tough start with a 67-65 loss to long-time

foes Cashmere High School.

The second match-up saw Ashcoll take on eventual tournament runners-up Rangi Ruru.

The College girls struggled to contain Rangi’s Junior Tall Fern Esra McGoldrick, eventually going down 78-56.

Day two started with an early match against last year’s tournament winners, St Hilda’s Collegiate.

Ashcoll fought hard throughout the contest, even outscoring St Hilda’s in the final quarter for an 84-46 final margin.

The last round of pool play saw Ashcoll take on Marion College.

The girls were eager to pick up

their first win of the tournament and did so with an emphatic performance, winning 99-22.

The first round of 9th-16th place crossovers pitted Ashcoll against Otago Girls’ High School.

The girls battled back from a 10 point first quarter deficit to take the match 68-45.

The second round of crossovers was a hard-hitting encounter against James Hargest College.

Hargest used their size advantage well and even with three final minute three pointers Ashcoll was unable to pull back the difference, going down 87-94.

The final match brought Ashcoll full circle, competing against

Cashmere for the 11th and 12th places.

Not wanting a repeat of their first encounter, Ashcoll started with some punch, quickly amassing a 20-point buffer on their opponents. The final margin was 80-43 in Ashcoll’s favour and a fitting final performance to farewell senior Hannah Roulston.

Coach Andrew Shepherd was extremely happy with his young team’s performance.

“If we can keep this group together over the next couple of years we’ll definitely be putting some pressure on the top teams, we have some very talented young players at Ashcoll.”

Act of reckless revenge causes carnage The father of a cyclist competing in the Tour Cycliste Antenne Reunion has been arrested and fined after a crazy act of misguided revenge.

The tour on the French territory of Reunion Island off the east coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean has been shocked by the deliberate attempt by a spectator to cause serious injury to several members of the peloton.

of French rider Jonathan Boyer, caused carnage on the first stage in a reported act of revenge for an earlier crash involving his son.

Jonathan Boyer was involved in a nasty crash on the second day of the event when he and rival Enzo Bernard were sprinting side by side before they became tangled up.

Boyer hit the railing on the side of the track and fell hard after hitting a security barrier.

Bernard has since been dis-

qualified from the event, but his apparent act of recklessness is nothing compared to JeanBernard Boyer’s response to the incident.

After demanding Tour officials cancel the race, Jean-Bernard Boyer took matters into his own hands when told the race would be continuing.

Big guns hit the track The whips were definitely cracking at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s workouts yesterday.

While in theory it was just another day at the workouts, Cup Week at Addington is just over the horizon, and some of the big guns were out to test their readiness for the track.

In the Free-For-All Pace (C7 and faster), the all-conquering

Purdon-Rasmussen All Stars stable was out in force, and trackside watchers weren’t disappointed.

Natalie Rasmussen drove Have Faith In Me to victory over Smolda (Tim Williams) and Lazarus (Mark Purdon) to record a stable trifecta in the event.

The margins were a head, a nose and one-and-three-quarter

lengths, and while the mile rate of 2-05.3 over the 2400 metre journey wasn’t world-beating, they sizzled home in 27.1 for the last 400.

Konjuh bundles Radwanska out of Open Trying to serve out the biggest victory of her career, 18-year-old Ana Konjuh was startled – right along with everyone else under the roof in Arthur Ashe Stadium – by a piercing noise coming from the US Open arena’s sound system during a ball toss.

The Croatian recoiled, let the ball drop and put her left hand to her chest.

Once Konjuh realised nothing bad was going on, she smiled, then resumed playing, just as calm and collected as ever, and finished a 6-4, 6-4 upset of No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska yesterday to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

“I just said to myself, ‘Stay in the game. Don’t rush,’” Konjuh said.

Yes, she acknowledged later, she was scared for a moment by the odd sound.

But nothing really threw her off

her game on this night.

Not the stakes or the setting – playing with the roof closed atop the largest tennis stadium she’d ever set foot in.

And definitely not Radwanska, the 2012 Wimbledon runner-up.

“I’m real excited about my performance tonight.

“My serve was pretty good tonight,” Konjuh said.

Konjuh, who is ranked only 92nd, was the junior champion at Flushing Meadows in 2013.

A fearless big hitter, Konjuh compiled a 38-9 edge in winners against Radwanska, who is 27.

Radwanska is now 0-5 in fourth-round matches at the U.S. Open, the only Grand Slam event where she hasn’t been to the quarter-finals at least once.

“I just couldn’t do any more, I guess, today,” Radwanska said.

“I was really trying. I was just too slow today.”

Konjuh next faces 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova, who eliminated Venus Williams in three sets.

Pliskova, who is 24, has never played in a major quarter-final, either.

Meanwhile Juan Martin del Potro’s summer renaissance has continued, with the unseeded Argentine advancing into the US Open quarter-finals when Austrian eighth seed Dominic Thiem quit their match with an injury.

Jimmy Neesham’s return as a test allrounder contender enhances the selection options in the New Zealand squad of 15 named yesterday for their three-test, fiveODI tour to India.

The assertive lefthander has been out of test cricket for 11 months since breaking down with a back injury at Brisbane early in the first test against Australia last November.

It’s worth remembering he averages 38.25 from his nine tests and while his wicket return is ordinary – 12 at 39.33 – he can offer the tour selectors some flexibility when it comes to settling on their test teams.

In the absence of Neesham and the other premier seam bowling allrounder, Corey Anderson, who is preparing to return from another back injury, New Zealand have turned to left arm spinner Mitchell Santner.

He’s a useful batsman but his numbers don’t compare with Neesham.

New Zealand will eye Neesham as a possible contender as third seamer in India.

That might be a push but would leave room for two spinners in anticipated spin-friendly conditions without compromising the batting order.

“The No 1 priority in terms of allrounders is having someone around No 6 who is going to offer either the fourth seamer, or maybe in Indian conditions, the third seamer job,” national selector Gavin Larsen said.

It’s a delicate business.

New Zealand can’t afford to shorten the batting order, but must find a way to have a minimum two spinners in their XI. That might mean choosing just two frontline seamers, plus Neesham, so in that scenario who makes way from Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner?

Larsen admitted Southee, whose form has been ordinary for the last year, is vulnerable.

Left armer Boult looked to be coming back to his best form in South Africa while the indefatigable Wagner simply demands selection.

“Tim’s got a great pedigree but he’s had a tough year, no doubt about that,” Larsen said.

“The key point from a selection point of view is these fast bowling spots are contestable.

“Tim doesn’t demand a spot.

“He’s going to have to prove to the tour selectors that he’s deserving of taking the new ball.”

Seamer Matt Henry misses out as does Jeet Raval who went to Africa but has been deemed surplus for India, leaving no specialist top order backup.

Openers Tom Latham and Martin Guptill had a tough time of it in South Africa. Latham is safe, but Guptill is battling against the red ball.

Black type on the agenda Highly-regarded colt Savile Row will face an early introduction to black type racing.

The Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard-trained three-yearold will resume later this month at Ellerslie in a Group Three event that will serve as a test of his classic credentials.

“We have pencilled him in to run in the Bonecrusher Stakes fresh-up and depending how he goes we will then plot a path to the 2000 Guineas,” Ballymore Stables racing manager Nick Fairweather said.

Raced by his breeder Kevin Hickman, Savile Row made a successful debut at Avondale, where recent Australian winner Old Farm Road finished third, last season before he was spelled.

“She would have to win, or be very unlucky not to, to continue on toward the Guineas,” Fairweather said.

Placed in last season’s Listed Wellesley Stakes, Fortaleza recently finished third at Te Rapa in her first appearance as a three-year-old.

“She’s still learning her craft and she’s been a bit keen in her races.

“We’re hoping to see her settle a bit better,” Fairweather said.

First female in V8s Simona de Silvestro is set to become the first full-time female driver in Supercars in more than four decades after signing a three-year deal with organisers beginning in 2017. The 28-year-old Swiss driver debuted in the category as a wildcard at last year’s Bathurst 1000, and is set to return to Mount Panorama alongside Renee Gracie again next month with Nissan. “It was such an incredible experience and I knew this could be a goal for the future,” the former IndyCar and Formula E driver said yesterday. “This is going to be my first full-time year with a closed top car and there a lot of new things for me to learn and adapt to.”

BY DOUG FERGUSON Three holes into the Deutsche Bank Championship, Rory McIlroy had to make a 15-foot putt just to escape with triple bogey.

He already was 4-over-par and had every reason to believe this tournament was headed for an outcome that was becoming far too familiar for a player of his class.

But there was one difference.

His head didn’t drop.

His shoulders didn’t sag.

McIlroy went from a miserable start to a memorable finish, closing with a 6-under 65 yesterday to make up a six-shot deficit and win the Deutsche Bank Championship for his 20th career title around the world.

“It’s just incredible, this game, how quickly things can change,” McIlroy said after his two-shot victory over Paul Casey.

“It’s been a great lesson for

me this week not to get down on myself, to stay patient.

“After three holes Friday, there was so much going through my head, and none of those things involved sitting beside a trophy.”

Not just a trophy, but a belt, too.

Deutsche Bank gave him the blue belt with a large silver buckle when McIlroy won four years ago, and because this was the last year it is sponsoring the tournament, the company wanted him to keep it.

“World heavyweight title,” McIlroy said of the belt.

Not quite, but certainly a step in that direction.

A new putter, a new putting coach, and suddenly he looks like the McIlroy of old.

It was his first PGA Tour victory of the year and moved him to No. 4 in the FedEx Cup, all but assuring him a clear shot at the $10 million bonus when he gets

to the Tour Championship at the end of the month.

In a strengthening wind from Hermine that penalised the slightest misses at the TPC Boston, McIlroy closed out the front nine with three straight birdies to take the lead for the first time, went ahead to stay with a 20foot birdie on the 12th hole and left no doubt with a 3-wood into the wind and over the hazard on the par-5 18th hole that set up a birdie from the bunker.

Casey, who started the final round with a three-shot lead in his bid for his first PGA Tour victory since 2009, closed with a 73.

He had a 60-foot eagle putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff.

It went 8 feet by and he missed the meaningless birdie putt.

“Wow, very impressive. Yeah, that’s a mighty round of golf,” Casey said of McIlroy’s finish.

“I struggled a little bit from

the get-go and it’s hard to regain rhythm and make your birdies if you started out that way, so I found it incredibly difficult.”

PGA champion Jimmy Walker closed with a 70 to finish third.

The 27-year-old from Northern Ireland fell out of the “Big 3” conversation earlier this year when Dustin Johnson won the U.S. Open, Henrik Stenson won the British Open and McIlroy kept sliding, largely because of his putting.

His only victory was the Irish Open in May, and when he missed the cut in the PGA Championship, he sought out popular British putting coach Phil Kenyon.

McIlroy also switched putters last week at Bethpage Black, though he was at the bottom of the pack in putting.

Not this week.

Serena Williams surpassed Roger Federer for most Grand Slam match victories in tennis’ Open era with No. 308, a 6-2, 6-3 win over Yaroslava Shvedova yesterday to reach the US Open quarter-finals. Williams hit a tournament-leading 126mph serve, pounded 11 aces, won 28 of 30 points when a first serve landed in, and didn’t face a break point against the 52nd-ranked Shvedova.

The top-seeded Williams is 308-42 at major tournaments, and is now three more wins from her 23rd Grand Slam singles title, tied with Steffi Graf.

Langman ineligible?

Laura Langman looks set to be blocked from playing for the Silver Ferns next season as she lines up another contract across the Tasman.

The star midcourter, who has not missed a test for the Silver Ferns since making her debut in 2005, is preparing to take a year away from the international game, opting instead to sign with an Australian club in the new domestic competition. The move will make her ineligible to play for the Ferns.
