Nightly delays for motorists Ashburton motorists, particularly those who travel at night and in the early mornings, will encounter significant disruptions from Sunday night in the heart of Ashburton.

A stretch of the main State Highway through Ashburton will be undergoing repairs and maintenance work for the course of the week with work beginning from Sunday night at 6pm each night through to 7am the next morning.

The work will include milling the existing road surface to prepare it for its asphalt surface.

The work is taking place between the Havelock Street and State Highway 1 intersection down to where West and

East streets meet at the railway crossing.

State Highway 1 will be reduced to a single lane while this work is done.

During each night shift – Moore, Tancred and Burnett streets will be closed at the intersection with State Highway 1.

Signed detours will be placed when the roads are closed.

During the course of the work, there will be no on-street parking within the work area although vehicles will be able to be accessed in areas like the West Street carpark by foot.

The work is expected to be completed by Friday morning although weather and other factors may delay the process.

Carroll found guilty of murder Peter John Carroll was found guilty of murdering Christchurch man Marcus Luke Tucker yesterday.

Carroll, 53, was charged with murder after the body of Tucker, 36, was found bashed and burnt near Lake Ellesmere on Anzac Day last year.

Tucker’s family, who were in the High Court at Christchurch, were emotional as the verdict was read out.

The jury deliberated for three hours.

During the nine-day trial, Carroll told the court he only meant to intimidate Tucker and did not intend to kill him.

Carroll used a steering wheel lock to hit Tucker on the head a number of times, resulting in severe head injuries.

Carroll and Tucker were both involved in the city’s drug scene,

and the court heard that Tucker had been using fake $100 notes to buy drugs days before his death.

Carroll told the court he started counting the money and the top three notes were real, but the rest were photocopied.

He said he hit Tucker in an effort to intimidate him, but Tucker kept struggling and would not calm down.

When Carroll realised Tucker had died, he and an associate drove out to Lake Ellesmere, wrapped his body in carpet, and set his body on fire.

Tucker’s body was found the next day by a group of fishermen and Carroll was arrested six days later.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on November 2.

Pavilion working bee to ease access

With plenty of events and the start of the season a week away, Mid Canterbury Cricket are asking for people to chuck on the gardening gloves and to give them a hand in gaining access to parts of the Ashburton Domain Oval Pavilion.

The association has planned a working bee for 9am today, to clear the gutters and tidy up the building.

Mid Canterbury Cricket chairman Mike Southby said that after a meeting with the council, part of the notice would be rescinded if the gutters were cleared and exit signs were installed.

“There are still bits that need a bit more done and we don’t know about the indoor nets yet as they are pending an engineer’s review,” he said.

“It is good that we will be able to get back some of the building.”

The senior cricket season begins next week, while the Canterbury Kings and Magicians will be visiting on Friday afternoon as a way to celebrate the start of the season.

“In a way the nets are important but then they aren’t. The winter programmes have finished so they would only be used for the trainings but we will just have to make other arrangements,” Southby said.

World War 1 troops honoured in Belgium Kiwi soldiers, who lost their lives 100 years ago in one of the first major World War I battles fought

by Anzacs, have been honoured in a memorial service.

The two New Zealand services were held in Belgium to mark the Battle of Broodseinde on October 4, 1917.

During the battle, the efforts of Kiwi soldiers in helping to extend the frontline was considered a success despite them losing 500 men and 1700 injured.

A second service was then held

in the afternoon at the New Zealand Battlefield Memorial in Gravenstafel, which was the scene of fierce fighting in 1917.

Zonnebeke Mayor Dirk Sioen paid tribute to the “sons of Passchendaele”‘ who lived on in the hearts of people in the community.

The attack to capture the village of Broodseinde began before dawn October 4, with 14 divisions, including the New Zealand Division, attacking along a 10km front.

Its relative success persuaded

General Douglas Haig that one final push would break through the demoralised German defences, according to historian Dr Ian McGibbon.

However, with rain starting that evening and turning the battlefields into a quagmire, a subsequent attack on October 12 proved disastrous.

It led to 960 men either being killed outright or losing their lives during the following three months because of battle wounds.

Four hospitalised after two-car collision at Ealing

Four people were hospitalised with moderate injuries after two cars collided near Ealing yesterday.

The incident occurred shortly after 11am on State Highway 1, about 100m south of the intersection of Ealing and Withells roads.

Multiple police units and St John ambulances rushed to the scene, along with fire appliances from the Ashburton, Hinds and Geraldine stations.

A police spokesperson said four passengers were transported to Timaru Hospital, suffering moderate injuries.

The northbound lane of State Highway 1 was blocked by the crash and traffic was backed up for several hundred metres in either direction.

Hinds volunteer firefighters were put on directing traffic duty and also assisted in clearing the busy road.

The northbound lane was reopened at 12.10pm.

Emergency services remained at the scene until around 12.30pm, and police were seen speaking to those who had witnessed the incident.

CBD redevelopment still on radar

The development of a plan that could ultimately see the closure of Burnett Street and the development of a pedestrian mall is on the Ashburton District Council’s radar.

When its town centre working group met they took a long, hard look at changes planned for Burnett Street and how these would impact on the inner town street scape.

One of the options was to plan for a partial closure of Burnett Street and possibly Tancred Street

to create a large pedestrian precinct. This would tie in with the Eastfield development that will be built around a pedestrian green space.

Councillor Neil Brown was keen to see a high-level concept plan drafted to provide a starting point for the council to seek comment from developers and stakeholders.

The council has delayed any upgrade work in this area of the CBD because of pending developments.

The working group’s chairwoman Diane Rawlinson said the next

step for the group would be closely linked to the development of the new civic building and library project planned for Baring Square east and the Eastfield development between Tancred, Burnett and Cass streets.

“I think we’ll be guided by other activities happening in the town.

There’s no quick fix for this,” she said.

The group decided it would be good for the council to develop a concept plan for Burnett Street because of the Eastfield development and the planned upgrade of the Ashburton MSA.

As this work was completed the council would need to look at street design and traffic flows, she said.

A plan for the redevelopment of Ashburton’s town centre was commissioned almost 10 years ago and working group members are confident it is still relevant to today.

They have dusted off the 2008 Boffa Miskell plan and intend to review its 18 recommendations.

The town centre revitalisation project will be a key item in the council’s long-term plan review where community groups and

stakeholders will be consulted.

This is likely to include the creation of a new position for a structural planner to work with developers and community stakeholders on town centre issues.

When it comes to closing parts of Burnett or Tancred streets to vehicles, council roading manager Brian Fauth said the move would be in line with modern thinking on how towns should develop.

“That thinking is that cars should be kept out of them, that if people are walking, retail thrives,” he said.

Another book, another winner for Winter

That she regularly tops the bestseller charts with her cookbooks still surprises 2012 New Zealand Masterchef winner Chelsea Winter.

But more than the accolade of being a best-selling author, Winter says she gets more pleasure from knowing that Kiwi cooks are taking her recipes to heart, cooking them for their families and sharing them with friends.

Last night she was in Ashburton talking at a sell-out book signing session and said it still amazes her that so many people will turn up to listen to her speak.

If there’s any secret to her success, Winter said, it’s as simple as being herself, remaining true to the food she likes and creating recipes that are about real food for real people.

“I don’t subscribe to any food fashions and I develop simple recipes that people want to make,” she said.

Her latest book Eat was released less than one week ago and has already taken over the number one bestseller spot.

She’s come a long way from the marketing executive who turned chef five years ago, but essentially, Winter said, she hasn’t changed.

“If anything, this has made me a better person. I’m doing something I genuinely love and have a passion for and to know I’m making a difference in people’s lives every day is amazing,” she said.

While many celebrity chefs have a support entourage, Winter is a one-woman band. She runs her website, develops recipes, handles her own social media business and does her administration work. Yes, she calls in a photographer when a book is in the development process and a

publicist who keeps her profile high, but otherwise, she’s driving her own life.

“And that’s great, it means I can be myself every day I don’t have to please anyone else and can stay true to myself and my recipes.”

Perhaps surprisingly, when she works with food every day, Winter says she’s never short on inspiration and new ideas.

While developing recipes is her job, Winter still finds time for some culinary deviations. She’s developed a link with tour company Trafalgar with whom she hosts food tours. They’ve taken her to Italy, the South of France, Spain and Portugal. Next year she’s hoping to host tours to Croatia and Northern Italy.

They’re not about cooking, but they are about food and also about normal tourist activities too, she said.

“The people on the trips are all Kiwis, all into food, they make life-long friends and I stay connected with them too.”

Each of her recipe books is a reflection of who she is as a person and each recipe is accompanied by comments from Winter about the recipe and how and why it was created.

And many of those recipes are light years away from whatever is on-trend.

“I often write about what the recipe means to me, it’s all about connecting to the person who uses the recipe, it makes using my recipe into an experience and people feel like they know me – what you see is what you get.”

Five books and book tours down the track Winter still gets a buzz out of meeting fans, out of being stopped in the street by strangers, and by being photographed.

“It still blows my mind, but I

Being told by strangers that they love her food, that their kids love her food and those same kids want to cook it is the ultimate buzz, Winter said.

“My food’s not glamorous but it’s bloody delicious and that’s what matters. I couldn’t give a damn about food fashion.”

When it comes to what she eats, Winter says she’s not fussy, she’ll eat whatever she feels like at the time – and everything in moderation except vegetables – she eats those often and in large quantities.

she admits most use her cookbooks and her recipes.

She doesn’t chase the Auckland fine-dining hot-spots, saying she’s a homebody who doesn’t go out all that often.

Masterchef is no longer an annual event in New Zealand, but Winter said she looks back at the competition and rates it as a great experience – high pressure, but run with integrity.

“It was absolutely about the food. It’s edited but it’s not scripted or planned, it’s not engineered to be a certain way. Whatever happens, happens.”

Yes, it’s incredibly pressured working in the Masterchef kitchen, but you quickly become ac-

customed to being on camera and just get on with the job, she said.

Winter is married to husband Mike Bullot. The couple live in Auckland with her labradoodle Sprite.

During Masterchef they were a couple and Mike proposed shortly after she won the title.

That probably confirms the saying “food’s the way to a man’s heart”, Winter said.

In the future she dreams of moving away from Auckland and into the country.

“But right now, I’m really happy with what I’m doing, getting people to cook for happiness again.”

New cafe to open

Workers in Ashburton’s north-east business park will shortly be able to dine on site when a new cafe opens for business.

Tricroft Properties has secured a site that will become home to the new cafe, with the company’s general manager Charlie Goodwin saying he anticipated it would open its doors in the new year.

Planning was well advanced for a complex that would include a cafe on the ground level with office space and a board room above, however, work would not start until a cafe operator had been secured, he said.

“It’s a successful development out there, its population is growing. Obviously the primary users will be the people who work out there but we’ll also be catering for the general population as well.

Goodwin envisages the cafe will be quite broad in the style of food it offers but said that would largely be determined by the operators.

“We can’t be all things to all people, but this definitely won’t be a greasy-spoon cafe,” he said.

Tricroft is talking with potential operators and anticipates the business estate cafe will open in the new year.

“We’re driven by when we find the right people to lease it, but we are keen to get going,” Goodwin said.

Methven Cactus programme restarts

A free, army-based after school programme is back up and running in Methven, bringing school children the chance to boost their confidence and discipline through physical activity.

A recent surge in support has seen the Cactus programme saved from impending cancellation.

Safer Ashburton youth worker Jenny Reed said the programme had helped dozens of 10 to 14-year-olds become selfreliant, self-sufficient and confident over

the years, as well as make new friends and learn outdoors skills.

Cactus stands for Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit & Support, and the programme is described as a “physically and mentally demanding course that teaches fitness, teamwork, discipline and confidence in a fun and supportive environment”.

It has been operating in Ashburton since 2006 and Methven since 2014, but the Methven programme was cancelled in term 1 this year following a lack of enrolments.

“A lot of interested people have come forwards and we’re really pleased to be running it again,” Reed cafe.

“Methven’s a great place for it because we get a lot of farm kids and outdoors people … but it’s for anyone, and we get a really broad sector of kids.”

Each eight-week Cactus programme culminates with an overnight camp.

The programme is run by Safer Ashburton, Ashburton Youth Institute and Te Puawaitangi Charitable Trust, with sponsorship from the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation and the Lion Foundation.

Dairy shed consents surge

“It’s certainly been a bit quieter but in saying that, the consents we are issuing are for much bigger homes rather than smaller, more affordable homes. When the guys do inspections it takes them so much longer as there’s so much more to look at so they’re spending more time on site,” he said.

Inspection numbers had dropped from 5000 in 2013/14 to 3500, but work hours were the same.

The council’s building services department was also dealing with a huge flood of consent applications for new fireplaces because of the looming October 31 deadline for the replacement of older logburners.

More than 100 applications were lodged last month and while the number had dipped a little at the start of this month, Wong anticipates there will be a flood of applications towards the end of the month.

If a logburner consent is not issued before October 31, the option of installing a low-emission burner comes off the table.

The more expensive ultra-low-emission burners will be the only ones available for installation in Ashburton’s air zone.

Homeowners will then have one year to have their burner installed.

There’s one single indicator that shows dairy farmers are opening their wallets again and that’s a sudden rise in the number of building consents issued for dairy sheds.

Ashburton District Council building services manager Michael Wong could be the district’s wealth tracker as he keeps tabs on the ebb and flow of dairy shed construction.

Consent numbers peaked in 2011 at 35, dropped to 26 in 2012 before rising again in 2013 to 32. For the next two years they were steady on 14, Wong said, before dairy farmers were hit by a dramatically reduced milksolid pay out.

In 2016 consent numbers dropped to just two.

This year, however, to August 31, eight consents had been issued (three of those in the past month), with indications more were to come, Wong said.

The rising number of dairy shed builds comes at the same time as his team is watching the number of dwelling consents drop. In August last year there were 21 consents issued for new homes; this August there were just nine. In September that

Historic portico unveiled at Methven Masonic Lodge When the Malvern Masonic Lodge closed its doors, it was left with a historic piece of furniture that was looking for a new home.

Methven’s lodge members stepped in and offered to take the artistic portico which had originally been constructed for the Clutha Lodge back in 1936.

When Lodge Clutha closed and handed in its charter, rather than see the portico destroyed, a member of the Malvern

Lodge claimed it.

It was then restored and installed at Colgate in the Malvern lodge rooms.

The portico is now in its third home at Methven, and was unveiled and rededicated by Peter W. Smith, district grand master of Midland District on behalf of the Southern Division grand master Rob Angelo.

The words on the portico – AUDI VIDE TACE refer to Hear, See and be Silent.

Stitching up holiday time

The art of embroidery has been passed down the generations since the 5 century BC and the Ashburton Embroiders’ Guild wants to ensure it continues that way.

The group held a school holiday class yesterday at Ashfords Handcrafts to share their craft with the younger generation.

Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild tutor Nola Sim said the young embroiderers had been developing their stitching skills,

then putting them to use to create unique Christmas decorations.

“We’ve been practising different stitches through the morning, and then this afternoon they’ve been making Christmas mittens,” she said.

“They’ve been using their imagination to decorate the snowmen and trees.”

The Ashburton Embroiders’ Guild is one of 58 nationwide. It has around 35 members, who biennially showcase their work in the Ashburton Art Gallery.

Late spring art show

Hot off the heels of their Early Spring Show, the hard-working members of the Ashburton Society of Arts are ready to fling open the doors to another new exhibition.

The annual Late Spring Show begins tomorrow in the Short Street Studio and features works from 12 local artists alongside North Canterbury guest artist Lisa Jepson.

Jepson captures New Zealand landscapes in acrylic, oil and pencil, with a “love of colour and a craving for detail”.

Her works recently proved a hit at an exhibition in the Ashburton Art Gallery.

“We saw how popular she was and thought she’d be a great guest for this exhibition,” Ashburton Society of Arts convener Ngaio McKee said.

The Late Spring Show will be open for five weeks, before five members of the society deliver another exhibition. Following that the group will hold their annual two-week Christmas show.

“We’ve certainly got a lot of things coming up,” McKee said.

The Late Spring Show will be open for viewing from 10am to 3pm on weekends at 53 Short Street, until November 12.

The artwork can also be viewed anytime the sign is out, or by appointment.

Kiwi actor on 3000km personal pilgrimage

By Sarah harriS A Kiwi actor – most famous for a stint in Lord of the Rings – is going to spend five months walking a 3000km track the length of New Zealand to raise $50,000 for grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Bruce Hopkins hopes to find “the missing piece in the puzzle” on the Te Araroa trail. He will be carrying two film canisters with his dad’s and brother’s ashes as he works his way towards their home – Hopkins is a fourth generation Stewart Islander.

“I wanted to express my gratitude and love of being born in this country by walking this trail. It will connect me fully to my heritage,” the 61-year-old said.

“I’m walking dad and Doug home, back to the island.”

Hopkins, who played the part of Gamling in LOTR, will start the track at Cape Reinga on October 14. He’ll document the trail with weekly podcasts, the first interview

The first night Hopkins will camp in Twilight Bay, 12km from Cape Reinga, as it’s where he and his father moored their boat when they were commercial crayfishermen in the 1970s. Then he will cover between 15km and 30km each day.

As a grandparent to three, Hopkins empathised with the charity Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. He wants to raise $50,000 to take some of the financial strain off the affected families.

“To suddenly become a fulltime parent again is financially and emotionally hard. Many of them are there through very trau-

matic circumstances. “One person had to go to the school to pick up their grandchildren and figure out how to tell them mum was dead because dad had killed her. Or because mum and dad are crackheads on P, they’ve lost the plot. Or the levels of violence people know they have to get kids out of there.

“Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is about being a resource there for these people to contact and seek assistance.”

Ironically tramping is not Hopkins’ forte – he only did his first one two weeks ago when he joined the Auckland Tramping Club on an outing. To prepare for the arduous trek he’s been donning a backpack with 16kg weights inside and “tramping” around the city.

“On the weekend I did a six-hour walk around the city with a backpack on. Bella Vista Reserve has 120 steps. I’ll just go up and down there for an hour.”

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren provides support to over 7000 grandparents and caregiv-

ers who care for more than 12,000 children across New Zealand, a figure that has nearly doubled over the past 10 years.

Te Araroa?

The idea was first floated in the 1970s when it was advocated for by the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ and in 1975 the New Zealand Walkways Commission was established.

But it wasn’t until journalist Geoff Chapple picked up the idea in 1994 that it got some traction.

He founded the Te Araroa Trust and the route was officially opened in 2011 after 10 years of work by hundreds of volunteers.

The trail has approximately 300 sections ranging from walks of one to two hours through to an approximately nine-day route in the South Island where most trampers haul large amounts of food and gear.

Forty per cent of the trail crosses conservation land.

Advert calls for Peters to head left

By Peter de Graaf A digital activist group has used crowdfunding to pay for a full-page ad in today’s Northern Advocate urging New Zealand First leader Winston Peters to form a coalition with Labour and the Greens.

The campaign is being run by ActionStation, an organisation that claims 180,000 supporters and describes itself as a digital community connecting like-minded people, “providing opportunities to take collective action ... and hold political and corporate interests to account”.

The $2500-plus required for the full-page ad, which will take the form of a letter addressed to Mr Peters and members of NZ First, was raised from 116 donors in less than 48 hours.

The group wants it to run on Saturday because Mr Peters will be “right in the middle of negotiations”. He is due to announce his choice of coalition partner four days later.

ActionStation said it chose the

Winston Peters Advocate because it covered the electorate where Mr Peters lived.

It lists four objectives – a wellfunded public health system, world-class education and training for youth, trade deals that put Kiwis first, and “making media and

public broadcasting great again” – which were all policies or election promises made by Labour, the Greens and NZ First, but not, according to the group, top priorities for National.

Campaign director Laura O’Connell Rapira said the group normally campaigned for policies, not parties, so made sure it had a mandate from its members before running the ad.

Immediately after the election the group surveyed its recently active members about which party or parties Mr Peters should go into coalition with.

Of the 4000 responses 92 per cent wanted a Labour-Green-NZ First coalition.

Ms O’Connell Rapira conceded that an ad on its own would not be enough to sway Mr Peters.

The group also asked the 11 per cent of its members who voted NZ First to contact the party directly.

Mr Peters has been coy about his preferred choice of coalition partner. Mr Peters declined to comment on the ad.

Petition demands action on mental health A petition for a mental health inquiry started by a woman who lost her son to suicide has received 21,000 signatures in just four days.

Corinda Taylor, whose 20-year-old son Ross took his own life in 2013, has decided to present the petition to the new government to demand action on mental health.

“I started a petition last year, in January, and we collected signatures by hand,” Taylor said.

“We were asked by the Health Select Committee in May to talk to them.”

No action has been taken since then, she said, and an inquiry has not been promised or begun.

Ross Taylor was in the care of mental health services in Dunedin for a year before his death, both as an inpatient and in the community.

He initially presented with symptoms of psychosis, and his mother said the family was not told by mental health services he was suicidal.

“My son became unwell aged 19 – it was the first time we noticed he was unwell.”

The family found out later

he was hearing voices instructing him to kill himself.

He had been out of acute inpatient services for just a month when he died.

Taylor started the Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust in 2014, which has helped run events such as Hope Walks and organised bereavement groups.

She urged people to get help if needed.

“They must reach out to one another and they must reach out to the services for help. And don’t go alone, get someone to go with you.”

A year of sniping, stalling I

n October last year, Ashburton broke new local body ground, welcoming to its council meeting table more new councillors than old and a newly-minted mayor.

In the lead-up to the election two mayoral candidates battled it out in two very different ways – incumbent Angus McKay took the traditional door-knocking path, while challenger Donna Favel went down the social media line.

It became a battle of tradition against a desire for change. Change won the day.

Picking councillors was a pot luck exercise. Yes, there were a few tried and true who were essential in the mix for continuity, knowledge, experience and understanding. Fortunately most – to varying degrees, worth another run.

But from the rest, who you voted

Sit at the press bench month after month at Ashburton District Council meetings and you see a side of the district’s elected members that few have an opportunity to see. It’s been one year since the last local body election. Reporter Sue Newman reflects on that year’s worth of meetings and assesses the performance of councillors and Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel. for probably relied on who you knew, the groups or organisations you belonged to and for the social media savvy, those who for one reason or other appealed or did not.

They were all untried, unmoulded clay.

What we ended up with is a disparate group that is yet to gel.

Within that group there are clear divisions, three to be exact. There’s tradition and experience on one side and on the other, those who

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel It was never going to be easy being the leader of a new team when you’re new to the job yourself, but one year down the track Favel has grown – immensely – in assurance and in knowledge.

She’s not there yet, but she’s getting there.

She’s winning on the visibility front and her meeting nous has improved significantly.

If the numbers were counted, she’s proving to be a more expensive mayor than her predecessors – a new PA, contract column writers and more trips to events meaning more mileage claims. The acid test for ratepayers will be whether we’re getter a bigger bang for spending more bucks.

Favel’s a different style of mayor to the traditional males of the past; she’s much more a person of the people, a battler for the left and she’s very visible.

Her style is more inclusive.

She believes her councillors should be more involved in public events. Nothing wrong with that, but unfortunately that inclusiveness does appear to be selective.

And that selectiveness could be Favel’s undoing. She has a clear support team, but rather than leaning on and learning from the wise and immensely experienced deputy mayor Neil Brown, Favel appears to be drawing her support and advice from other much less experienced quarters, using them as her eyes, ears and advisers.

One year down the track it’s time for Favel to stand alone, to cast off the web of support she’s clustered around her. She is the council team leader, she’s not a member of the team. If you’re the boss you can’t be matey with some of your employees, they go where you lead, you don’t walk alongside them.

It might be lonely at the top, but that’s the job. Favel needs to choose her friends wisely, make decisions according to her own conscience, commit to governance and high level thinking and become the leader she is quite capable of becoming.

A mayor may no longer be a figurehead, but they are still the person charged with having the clear and far-reaching vision that will take this district into a vibrant future. Leadership is not a co-operative undertaking.

Thelma Bell Bell’s confidence is growing. She’s increasingly prepared to voice an opinion, to vote as she sees it. While, like all councillors, her knowledge and interest must be district-wide, her passion is for migrants and migrant issues.

Bell is no-one’s councillor but her own. She’s not a game player or faction follower.

She looks, listens, asks questions and votes as she sees it.

However, she needs to develop a much deeper understanding of the multiple issues that are debated. She still has plenty of gaps in her background knowledge but when these are plugged, it’s clear Bell’s voice will be heard as her confidence grows.

She needs to read everything she can get her hands on, know her agenda back to front before meetings and keep on asking questions of more experienced councillors.

seem determined to take the opposing stand and whose allegiance appears to be to one another rather than the greater cause.

And then there’s the power brokers – some vote according to conscience, or according to debate on the day and others according to behind the scenes persuasion.

This council is clearly a council that is not a team. There’s often an almost palpable sense of expectation around the council table when

there’s an important issue up for voting. Eyes watching eyes. Perhaps an indication of deals done through late night conversations?

Disappointingly, the meeting chamber has often become a minefield of clashing personalities and that stands in the way of progress.

And sadly those divisions appear to be hammering the heart and the enthusiasm out of some councillors.

When votes are cast on the

important issues, most often Stuart Wilson, Neil Brown, Leen Braam, Russell Ellis and Liz McMillan look at things from the same angle.

And that inevitably means Mark Malcolm, Selwyn Price, Alasdair Urquhart and often Diane Rawlinson will not.

Neil Brown, chairman of finance and business support committee Brown has a wealth of knowledge he’s happy to share – it’s a shame more don’t ask.

To every new councillor and a new mayor he’s the ultimate gift just waiting to be unwrapped.

When it comes to the business of council, there’s not much he hasn’t seen or done.

He’s not a publicity seeker, preferring to simply get on with helping run the district he holds close to his heart.

But for all his affable exterior, Brown does not suffer kindly councillors who waste time on

futile debate, who argue for the sake of arguing and those who have not done their homework.

When debate gets mired in trivia it’s clear he regrets his decision to stand for what is now his fifth term. The new chums would do well to look to Brown for guidance and as an example of how you should conduct yourself in the council chamber. He knows it’s not a playground.

He’s the elder statesman that some newbies under-estimate – at their peril.

His mayor would do well to walk alongside him; he’s the best resource she has.

Peter Reveley, chairman environmental services If it’s a rural issue then Reveley has a great store of knowledge to draw on, but he’s a councillor that no-one can count on when it comes to how he’ll vote.

Over past terms of council he’s been a bit of a lone wolf, the councillor who would often stand aside from the mainstream on a variety of issues.

This time round he has at least two allies, new councillors who can just about always be found in the opposing camp alongside him.

Reveley votes as he sees it,

but there are times it appears he’s been part of a pre-arranged voting bloc. An expression or a glance can speak a thousand words.

To his credit, he’ll say what he thinks, he’s happy to call other councillors out if he thinks they’re wrong and he is happy to wear the renegade tag.

He’s motivated by keeping rates down and by getting the best possible spend in the rural sector, but he’s not long on supporting social or community issues believing they’re not council’s core business.

Stuart Wilson service delive Wilson also has huge local body experience. He has a hair-trigger temper and he’s quick to cut councillors down to size if he thinks they’re playing games or attempting to score points during debates.

He’s a straight shooter who is solely focused on achieving the best outcomes for the district.

His views are not always populist views, but they come from the heart. He’s always very clear about where his allegiances lie and what he believes should be council’s focus. He has little time or patience with others who want to labour points and dally in trivia.

Wilson understands that the

Liz McMillan McMillan is another first timer with every thing in her armoury to ensure she becomes a first rate and very valuable councillor.

She does her homework and she’s not afraid to have an opinion.

She’ll agree or disagree with senior councillors as she sees fit. She’s no-one’s fool and when she votes you know she’s given the issue plenty of thought.

McMillan’s votes are not for

and little progress is her own person when it comes to what she supports and what she doesn’t, but it’s rare to see the Price/ Malcolm/Urquhart trio vote against her.

During its first year in business, the current council team has made little progress on issues of importance, it’s marked time, stalled projects and revisited past decisions.

Let’s hope during the next two years they can stop the needling and niggling that belong in the school yard and form some kind of cohesive working group. Let’s hope they can get a handle on their real work – governance rather than management, that’s the chief executive’s job – and that they can leave personal agenda at the door and start working together for the greater good.

The report cards follow:

Mark Malcolm Leen Braam Braam is a first timer with huge potential.

From the outset it was clear he stood for council knowing what he was getting into and what the issues were. He came prepared to do the job.

Braam clearly does his homework before meetings a he’s not afraid to voice his opinion. He reads his agenda from cover to cover and makes sure he understands what’s coming to the table.

He’s a no-nonsense councillor and, like his seniors, he

takes no prisoners when he feels a fellow councillor is out of line, wasting time or throwing red herrings into a debate.

He sets high standards in terms of doing his homework and he expects others to do the same.

Braam might be new to the job, but he’s assured and comfortable in the council meeting room chair.

He’s one to watch over the next two years. If he doesn’t get fed up with duck shovelling and discussions that go nowhere, he’ll move up the hierarchy during his second term.

Russell Ellis

n, chairman very committee meeting room is a place where personal grievances, alliances, attitudes and opinions need to be left at the door.

He knows they must not colour discussion or debate and it riles him when other councillors forget this.

Like Brown, he has a wealth of knowledge others could tap into and like Brown he does his homework.

He expects his fellow councillors to do the same. If they don’t know, he’d suggest they ask – before a meeting and before they make fools of themselves. He respects other people’s opinions but councillors know they need to back those opinions up with facts or they’ll wish they hadn’t spoken out.

Ellis has grown immensely as a councillor. He might be in just his second term around the council table but he’s watched, learned, done his homework and now he’s flying. He has a solid grasp on every issue and makes sure he can back opinions up with facts.

He’s been a fast riser and he’s no-one’s fool, no-one’s yes man. Ellis votes according to what he believes is best for the district and it takes a powerful argument to sway him from his position. But he can be swayed – by facts.

His votes are gener-

ally aligned with Wilson and Brown, but if the outcome is not clear-cut, Ellis will often try to find a middle ground that will satisfy everyone.

He might have come to council four years ago to fight for the man in the street, but he’s become much more than that. Ellis is now a councillor who understands process, who appreciates that making tough decisions might not make you popular and he’s become a councillor who understands that his job is to do what’s best for ratepayers – all ratepayers – and for the district of tomorrow.

He’s a keeper.

Lynette Lovett

sale, they go where commonsense and conscience says they should.

She’s had the advantage of coming to council after a term or two on the Methven Community Board and while she’s a staunch advocate for all things Methven, her mind is open to issues that span the district.

McMillan is another to watch. If she’s not burned off by the slugging matches that have marred this first year, she’ll be signed on for the long term.

Lovett brings a strong rural background to the council table. She’s one of the quiet observers, happy to keep her own counsel as she learns the ropes and understands the side plays and the allegiances that have developed. She’s yet to show what she’s capable of, but as she grows in confidence it’s clear Lovett won’t be content to sit on the sidelines for too long.

It’s also clear that she’s a councillor who can’t be

bought. She may not say a lot, but she’s certainly listening and learning.

Her background on rural sector committees indicates she knows what governance is about and when the time is right and her understanding of issues has deepened she’ll be comfortable standing up and saying her piece.

Lovett votes as she sees it and shows no allegiance to any faction. The time is coming when Lovett will be ready to make big statements.

Malcolm is always keen to go against the establishment.

His motivation as a councillor is unclear and there are still issues where he needs to gain a deeper understanding.

It’s clear he’s closely linked with fellow newcomer Selwyn Price. The pair usually vote in tandem.

Malcolm’s integrity jumped

several notches when he abstained from voting on the civic centre site, saying he did not have sufficient information on which to make a decision.

Fair call. It may have shown he hadn’t done his homework, but full marks for honesty.

There’s a feeling, however, that he’s not a seriously committed councillor and gets frustrated with the slow pace that is local government.

Selwyn Price Price is hard to read. He’s a councillor who always has an opinion, who always wants to debate, who will nit-pick and challenge.

Asking questions is good, being pedantic is not.

He’s a fine-print man who needs to elevate his thinking away from the little details to broad thinking, big picture governance.

If the establishment votes

one way, it’s likely Price will vote the other and he’s skilled at persuading other councillors on to his team.

He’s formed a solid alliance with his mayor and is the most frequently-seen councillor at public events.

Price is an intelligent councillor who is clearly dancing to his own agenda. He’s playing a long game and he’s using Facebook as a big weapon in his toolkit.

Diane Rawlinson One year down the track Rawlinson is still an unknown quantity.

She’s yet to show what she’s capable of, but there are signs that she’s growing in confidence and understanding of the way council processes work.

She’s still watching and learning, but she’s increasingly comfortable speaking on issues and the number of occasions when she’ll cast a vote according to her own convic-

tions, not those of others, is growing.

Rawlinson came to council from the Ashburton Citizens’ Association and therefore had good background knowledge about issues and processes.

Her challenge continues to be to step away from those ties and to become an independent councillor who runs her own ship and who takes a big picture view of issues.

She’s working hard at that, but some ties and allegiances are hard to cut.

Alasdair Urquhart Urquhart is a second-term councillor and is one of the quiet ones who is yet to make a mark.

He rarely contributes to debates and discussions, other than to offer his support to another councillor or to back up another’s opinion.

He remains a watcher as he was during his first term and has remained true to his original pledge, to vote against spending on anything other

than essential, core council business.

Unfortunately Urquhart did himself no favours when he abstained from voting on the civic centre and library project saying he did not have sufficient information on which to base a decision. And that’s odd.

He should have been more informed than most, having been part of the last team of councillors who developed the project and worked through the site selection process.

Serves 4 Lamb 700g Quality Mark lamb ribs 1/4 C hoisin sauce 1/4 C oyster sauce 2T soft brown sugar 2t finely-grated fresh ginger 1t crushed garlic Asian slaw 1/4 green or red cabbage, finely sliced 2 carrots, grated 4 spring onions, trimmed and very finely sliced 3 handfuls mung bean sprouts 1 handful picked coriander leaves 2T sesame seeds, toasted 2T light soy sauce 1T lime juice 2t soft brown sugar 2t sesame oil 1t wasabi paste 1t nigella seeds or black sesame seeds

1 ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Lamb: Place the lamb ribs in a large baking dish.

■ Mix together the hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, ginger, garlic and 1/2 C water. Pour over the ribs and toss well to coat.

Cover with baking paper and foil, seal well and place in the oven. Cook for 1 hour.

■ Remove ribs from the oven and uncover. Return to the oven and cook for a further 20 minutes until dark and crispy, turning halfway through cooking.

■ Asian slaw: Place the cabbage,

carrots, spring onions, sprouts, coriander and sesame seeds in a large bowl.

■ Combine the soy sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, sesame oil and wasabi in a small screwtop jar and shake well. Drizzle over enough dressing to moisten the salad and toss well.

■ Sprinkle with nigella seeds or black seasame seeds.

■ To serve: Serve the lamb ribs with the Asian slaw.

“We raise the question of what a more benign property market might mean for capital appreciation in the medium term and highlight why the upside for investors in both Summerset and Metlifecare from a re-rate in Mergeco could be substantial,” said FNZC research analyst Arie Dekker in a note.

Retirement village operators have been strongly supported by an upbeat property market, getting stronger prices for the sale of occupation rights to their units.

However, recent data points to a slowdown in the sector after moves by the central bank to clamp down on the level of high loan-to-value ratio mortgages are starting to have an impact. Earlier this week state-owned valuer Quotable Value said growth in New Zealand property values

continued to slow in September, staying below 5 per cent, On Thursday, Summerset Group said its sales of occupation rights fell about 21 per cent in the third quarter, with a decline in both resales and new sales, although it said some settlements will be recognised in the fourth quarter.

Dekker said reasons to consider a merger include the benefit of combining Metlifecare’s balance sheet strength, operating cash flows and significant embedded value with Summerset’s more advanced development capability and landbank. He also noted a combined entity would create a “more credible platform” to follow Ryman Healthcare into Australia.

“On Australia entry, we recognise the timeframes and capital required, but see the benefits of diversifying focus away from the competitive New Zealand market, where a large number of operators are competing on similar models.”

Whereas the two operators on a standalone basis are looking to do three to four village equiva-

lents per year in New Zealand, on a combined basis they might do two and look to build more quickly in Australia, he said.

The size of the opportunity and the perceived gap in the Australian market for ‘continuum of care’ offerings is a factor in the premium Ryman has been able to demand, he said.

Within the country, he said combining the assets of both companies would result in a meaningful New Zealand business with a significant presence in Auckland and provincial New Zealand.

Dekker notes there are hurdles for investors to overcome in consideration of a potential merger, as Metlifecare investors are likely attracted to the company’s strong balance sheet and may view the addition of Summerset’s debt unfavourably. Summerset investors may have questions about Metlifecare’s legacy asset base and the investment required there.

Ryman recently traded up 0.2 per cent at $9.60. Metlifecare increased 0.2 per cent at $5.87, while Summerset was unchanged at $5.20.

Opposition parties have pledged to limit the number of immigrants entering New Zealand, who have been blamed for putting too much pressure on local infrastructure and driving up house prices, compounded by fewer Kiwis jumping across the ditch due to a wobbly Australian economy.

The incumbent National Party, which is operating a caretaker government, also bowed to that rhetoric unveiling a ‘Kiwis first’ immigration policy, raising the bar for migrants to enter the country, although it later bowed to pressure from businesses and the regions to have another look at its proposals.

With the final tally for last week’s election due today and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters putting a deadline to have a deal in place by October 12, businesses are watching the outcome closely to figure out if there will be a marked shift in migration policy settings at a time when firms are struggling to

Aspire2 wants to make sure to sure policy settings are coherent, consistent and certain, with sudden resets foisted upon students unfairly changing the rules at the last minute, she said.

The incumbent administration has been targeting international students as a ripe source for service exports, setting a goal of doubling the nation’s income from them to $5 billion by 2025. Government figures show education exports were $3.55 billion in the March 2017 year, up from $2.43 billion in 2013.

oday we put the mayor and our councillors under the spotlight to mark 12 months since they were voted in at the last local government election.

Always a hot topic on the street, there’s a lot of interest in how our elected representatives are performing.

Some of you may see it as nit-picking and the Guardian looking to rile a few people up, and that’s fine. That is your opinion.

But I can assure you it is not.

Those profiled in the feature are the people who have been voted to oversee this district.

They are the ones who are there to make the decisions on our behalf and therefore they should expect to be subject of some attention from media, both for the positive and the negative.

It isn’t something that we have done lightly either.

A lot of discussion and planning has gone into the process in an effort to give you the best possible overview of how this current council and its councillors are performing.

In our corner, of course, is the fact we have been able to use the wealth of knowledge we have within out editorial department to curate the report.

Sue Newman has 20 years of experience in covering local government, here in Ashburton and further afield.

So, she’s more than qualified to pass judgement on what she sees. There’s no direct line into the centre of the system over at Baring Square, but Sue has a very good understanding of what is going on and is more than just a casual observer when it comes to council meetings.

In short, in my opinion, there is actually no-one better in this district to tell you how your councillors are performing.

The directions were quite simple too.

Don’t be afraid to write what you think – a spade is definitely a spade in this instance.

And so, you will see that not every comment made is a complimentary one.

We have identified some areas of, what we believe to be, concern and haven’t hesitated in informing you, our readers and those who voted for this council, of what they are.

We feel you deserve that.

Is it not the CEO and staff’s role - even it is just checking a job that has been done by contractors is satisfactory? Remember the role of the Council as in the Mayor and Councillors is governance. Mr Dalziel and his staff’s role is management.

k, please don’t tell anyone else about this opinion, especially the other two and a half (I’m counting my pet slater who lives under the dishwasher) readers of this column.

Look, I think I married a rulebreaker and I don’t know what to do!

See I’m the quiet, shy, wallflower half of Cherie Livingstone, current director of The Aristocats Kids and My Son Pinocchio, which has just exploded on stage last night, tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

Now being the totally unopinionated, meek civil servant who wears woollen singlets nine months of the year, I do find it hard to speak up and say what’s on my mind, so I thought I would seek the advice of the wiser amongst you and ask; how do you tell the love of your life her idea is breaking all the rules?

What Cherie has done is decide to work with 80 children on stage, and then make half of them animals!

Have you ever seen two girls waddle around as geese with oversized feet and fluffy bottoms, trying to save an alley cat from drowning?

The number one rule in showbiz is don’t work with children or animals, just like the number one rule in politics is don’t work with leaders of a party who can’t even win their own constituency seat!

Cherie proposed this mad idea to the committee of Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre, who, after three chai lattes and a round of girls’ night karaoke, agreed to it! I mean seriously!

How do you bring together 80 7 to17-year-olds, in 10 short weeks, and direct two shows?

Well firstly, Cherie has worked with a very talented musical director and choreographer. Like the don of the Gambino family, Cherie sits around in perpetual darkness with her sisters and makes strategic decisions that

Meth overdose kills child The first time little Mariah suffered a meth overdose while home with her foster family in California, she survived.

The three-year-old girl had been with her foster family for just a few days when she first ingested meth.

The second time it happened, she died.

Paramedics found a little bag of methamphetamine rocks in her bedroom.

A lawsuit was filed earlier this week on Monday, on what would have been Mariah’s fifth birthday.

The lawyer for her family says almost no one looked into her death because the foster care system is “a system without accountability”.

“They don’t have a voice, they don’t have people who will speak out on their behalf,” Darren Kessler, the lawyer for Mariah’s brother Jeremyah through his guardian, Shannon Villanueva, told the East Bay Times.

emiah were taken from their mother and placed into foster care in September 2015, following allegations of abuse and neglect.

Just days into being placed with the foster family, Mariah began “acting strange”, according to the lawsuit.

Ms Kitcat needed open heart surgery after a bullet went through her arm and into a major coronary artery and her lungs.

Shrapnel left four holes in her heart and holes in her lungs, with doctors telling her family it is a “miracle” she is alive.

Mr Culbertson added in an interview: “We have a saying: We prepare for the worst but hope for the best. I hoped to never have seen that. Or experienced it. Or even seen the aftermath of it.”

His girlfriend is now recovering in hospital and will celebrate her 30th birthday next week.

Hammers’ win vital

With only two games left of the round robin, what looked impossible a month ago is very much looking a reality for the Mid Canterbury Hammers.

They now sit only one spot outside booking themselves a ticket to the semi-finals of the Meads Cup, but they still have plenty of work ahead of them.

Coaches Craig Dunlea and James Jowsey have had the luxury of naming the same starting 15 that got the job done against Thames Valley last week.

“It has been quite good (being able to name the same 15).

“We have been able to see what is working and stick with it, and we have had three good wins,” Dunlea said.

“We have been lucky this year.

“We have only used 33 or 34 players, and haven’t had any long term injuries, and anyone that was injured is coming back around now, which is the best time.”

After a few games against big, bruising opposition, Dunlea said he is expecting Buller to bring a style similar to the Hammers today.

“They are a side that is quite

similar to us. They like to play the footy round and they have some good backs that they try to unleash,” he said.

“They have some good physical forwards who are a bit more dynamic than others we have faced.”

With Buller currently sitting in third spot on the ladder, Dunlea said the side’s main focus is picking up the vital four points, before they think about the bonus point.

“If we don’t get the four points tomorrow then we won’t be in the top four,” Dunlea said.

“The guys have been going good, but ultimately we can’t let

any complacency get in there we just have to keep going.”

The game will also be a chance for Mid Canterbury Rugby to acknowledge some of its longest serving players, with 10 of the union’s 22 centurions being presented with caps to acknowledge their achievement.

The players being acknowledged are: Alan Smith (109), Mike Hanham (102), Greg Prendergast (100), Jock Ross (161), Murray Roulston (137), Alan Grieve (109), Grant Perry (119), Bruce Parkin (112), John McLay (100) and Warren Frew (117).

Hansen wary of backlash Don’t be seduced by the scoreboards.

It’s a simple message from All Blacks coach Steve Hansen as his team prepare to put the icing on another perfect Rugby Championship campaign in Cape Town tomorrow morning.

The world champions can complete a fourth clean sweep in six editions of the tournament if they beat the Springboks, who have become whipping boys in recent seasons.

Averaging more than six tries and 44 points per game, the All Blacks have seemingly played in a different realm to their southern hemisphere rivals.

Not so, says Hansen, even when assessing the 57-0 trouncing of the South Africans when they met in Albany last month.

That was the best performance of a Rugby Championship campaign which has mixed freakish attacking highlights with some off-colour patches.

“I don’t think the scoreboards reflect what’s happened in each game,” Hansen said.

“We’ve had to work really hard.

“And this time we’re playing a team who will be hurting incredibly after Albany, I’d suggest.”

Hansen believes his team’s inexperience could yet be exposed at a traditional South African stronghold.

Unavailability and a desire to build towards the next World Cup has left the ultra-successful coach unveiling his least experienced team to face the Springboks since taking charge in 2012.

All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams says a fault in his tackle technique has been ironed out – and potentially at just the right time. Williams has taken note that Frenchman Jerome Garces is the referee for their Rugby Championship Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Arguably the most influential figure in this year’s drawn series against the British and Irish Lions, Garces made some key decisions including the dismissal of Williams in the first half of the lost second test in Wellington.

by introducing Pieter-Steph du Toit at flanker and renowned leaper Lood de Jager at lock.

Newlands could be a Springboks’ casualty ward

hen you match the All Blacks up against the Springboks there can only be one winner.

Allister Coetzee knows it, so does Steve Hansen and most of the crowd expected at Newlands tomorrow as the All Blacks make a visit to the ground for the first time in nearly a decade.

If the teams were combined only a couple of Springboks would enter the discussion to make a starting XV.

Without Brodie Retallick there is room for a lock and the props would be up for debate, but that’s it.

No wonder Coetzee talked about the difficulties for his team as they tackle a side determined to end the Rugby Championship with an unblemished record.

Depending on how the Boks use captain Eben Etzebeth and his locking partner Lood de Jäger, one would challenge Scott Barrett for a start in a composite side and tight head prop Ruan Dreyer might be in the chat if he can ask

questions of Kane Hames.

Senior loosehead prop Tendai Mtawarira is on family leave like Retallick and Steven Kitshoff is a proven sub without many test starts who will find a scrum rock in Nepo Laulala.

Francois Louis is a durable hard loosie but playing out of position at No 8 where he will be compared against the highly experienced All Black leader Kieran Read.

Behind the packs you might consider Jesse Kriel but not on the evidence of this season.

None of his colleagues either.

They’ve had their moments but that’s all they’ve been.

Halfback Ross Cronje and midfield back Jan Serfontein give it some but are up against some high pedigree opponents, who given decent conditions which can be an issue at Newlands this time of the year, like to attack.

On the same pitch 22 years ago, the world and England were staggered by Jonah Lomu’s four tries in a big World Cup match.

There hasn’t been a global tournament staged in Africa since

and sadly Lomu is no longer with us.

But Rieko Ioane, Nehe MilnerSkudder and Damian McKenzie offer the sort of attacking thrills which Lomu and the team of ‘95 delivered until they fell to mystery illness on the high velt and the Boks in the final.

Unless the referee is nobbled or Suzie is unearthed again and somehow smuggled past the All Blacks security to deal her nauseous potion, the Boks should look like the casualties tomorrow.

Record haul Sophie Pascoe is turning the national short course swimming championships into a world record hunting ground.

Kiwi Paralympic great Pascoe has lowered the para swimming world record in five different events, including two more in the third finals session on Thursday.

Pascoe stopped the clock at 1min 05.01sec in the women’s SM10 100m individual medley and 27.22sec in the 50m freestyle.

The 24-year-old says even with all her suc-

cess – she has won nine Paralympic golds – she still harbours a desire to improve.

“We’ve been looking at the stroke rate, shortening the stroke rate, to be able to get that drive from the front and obviously the work has been paying off,” she said.

Warne inspires Fox Shane Warne’s presence as a playing partner made the day even sweeter for strongstarting Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox at the latest European Tour event.

Fox holds a share of third in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after carding a four-under 68 at the St Andrews Old Course in Scotland.

Five birdies and a bogey left him a stroke behind Ireland’s Paul Dunne and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts at the tournament which employs a unique format.

As well as the individual championship, there is a celebrity team scoring component through the first three rounds.

Fox has been paired with Australian cricketing great Warne, a golfer of some ability, and they hold the lead in the Team Championship after the opening day.

Warne said he enjoyed watching 30-year-old Fox ply his trade.

“It wasn’t easy out there in that wind and to watch Ryan play the way he did was a pleasure,” Warne said.

“I chipped in a couple of times but it was great fun out there to watch these guys.”

According to Fox, Warne more than held his own.

“Shane played some great golf,” he said.

“The hole I bogeyed he made a net birdie anyway. He took advantage of short holes and made a couple of clutch putts and we combined well as a team.

“As Shane said, it was a lot of fun out there today.”

The pair’s second round at the multicourse event is at the nearby Carnoustie Golf Links.

The Silver Ferns got their Constellation Cup campaign off on a bum note at Spark Arena on Thursday night, falling to a 57-54 loss to the Diamonds.

After the high of last month’s big Quad Series win over Australia, which instilled a lot of confidence in the young team, last night’s effort represented a regression.

Three of NZME’s top netball brains, Dana Johannsen, Rikki Swannell and Jenny Woods, answer the burning questions from the Constellation Cup opener.

1. Hey! That wasn’t the same Silver Ferns side we saw in Invercargill. What happened?

DJ: The Ferns struggled to make the same impact defensively as they did in Invercargill, as Australia have clearly gone away and worked on how to unpick the New Zealand zone defence. I can only recall one clean intercept from the Kiwi team.

RS: No one had a great game from New Zealand, no one stood out and said “follow me”. Australia were far more effective in breaking down the Kiwi zone and didn’t allow the Ferns to attack and hunt and create turnovers like they did in Invercargill.

JW: The Diamonds were seriously stung by that loss, and made sure it didn’t happen again. It looked as though Lisa Alexander hadn’t fed them for a while as their hunger for the ball was far greater than that of the Ferns. Too often, particularly in the shooting circle, the New Zealand players were left standing.

2. Don your sparkly jacket and pretend you are Janine Southby, what aspect of the Ferns performance are you most disappointed with?

DJ: That the Ferns were out-performed in all the effort areas. The Kiwi side seemed to do a lot of ball-watching during the match, and failed to react – or worse, looked to the

umpire – when the ball spilled loose, while the Australians all swarmed to pick up the scraps, and made sure they were backing one another up.

RS: The passing under pressure. They threw away a lot of ball, allowed Aussie to get hands to ball and generally forced the issue on attack. Australia almost sneaked up from behind at times to pick NZs pocket and the Ferns seemed to be waiting for a call from the umpire to get them out of trouble.

JW: Having been careful how to wash the sparkly top, I’d be disappointed with a number of areas, but most particularly on attack.

I would have been very tempted to replace Maria Tutaia after that first half and re-install the Selby-Rickit/Mes combination that worked so well in the Quad Series. Having said that, Tutaia took a dose of the medicine she prescribed in the halftime chat with SKY and came out with a bit more mongrel.

Grant and Francois had quiet games – and of course these are two positions the Ferns have the least back up.

3. So had normal service resumed then?

Can we expect the Diamonds to dominate the series from here?

DJ: No. I guess if there’s one positive Southby can take from the match it’s that the Silver Ferns performed that badly and only lost by three. A Diamonds side of old would not have let the Ferns get back within one goal down the home stretch having led by as many as eight goals through the middle stages of the match.

RS: No. I don’t think this is a particularly strong Australian team like we’ve seen dominate in recent years and they ground out that win. Nothing New Zealand did is unfixable but a couple of players like Shannon’s Francois and Katrina Grant need to bring more than they did on Thursday night.

Trophy attracts huge turnout

Vettel goes fastest Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel posted the fastest time in the first practice session of the Japanese Grand Prix yesterday, placing ahead of championship rival Lewis Hamilton. Vettel was .211 seconds faster than Mercedes driver Hamilton in light rain at the Suzuka circuit. Daniel Ricciardo was third quickest in the session, narrowly ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

A red flag came out after Carlos Sainz crashed about 50 minutes into the session when he ran wide and accelerated out of the hairpin. He was unhurt but there was significant damage to his Toro Rosso car.

Ricciardo not moving

Action is underway in the Springston Trophy, the largest pony club event in the southern hemisphere, which is being held in Rakaia.

Thirty-nine teams are entered in the event, with four coming from Mid Canterbury.

The Methven and Tinwald combined team kicked off the first day, which was dressage, with a score of 163.28.

Rakaia Green snuck ahead with a lower score of 150.66, while their sister team Rakaia Black jumped ahead on the rankings with a score of 146.90.

Today will see the teams test themselves on the redeveloped cross-country course, before the show jumping on Sunday to wrap up the event.

Daniel Ricciardo has dismissed comments by high-profile Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko which cast doubt on the Australian’s future with the Formula One team. As Ricciardo guns for a career-best ninth podium of the season at tomorrow’s Japanese grand prix, Marko claimed this week the fourth-ranked F1 driver was being shopped around to rivals. But Ricciardo remains confident his contract will be honoured to the end of 2018. “I’m 100 per cent – well 99.999 per cent – sure I’ve got a seat with Red Bull Racing next year,” Ricciardo said.

McLaughlin sets pace

By Laine cLarK Supercars series leader Scott McLaughlin has sounded his Bathurst 1000 intentions by clocking a lap record at Mount Panorama yesterday.

In the final practice session before yesterday’s qualifying, Ford gun McLaughlin made the most of cool track conditions to clock a scorching time of 2min 04.14sec.

He eclipsed Holden great Jamie Whincup’s 2015 mark by a whopping 0.76sec.

McLaughlin topped the timesheets in the one hour session, ahead of Ford’s Chaz Mostert (2:04.67) and Holden’s Nick Percat (2.04.70).

Qualifying for Sunday’s Great Race starts at 3.50pm.

McLaughlin stunned pit lane with his blistering lap with 20 minutes left in the final practice session.

“I am pretty blown away to be honest,” McLaughlin said.

“That last lap I feel like we could have been a little bit better.

“The first two sets of tyres I was

Baabaas set for final The Ashburton Barbarians will make the drive south to Timaru today with nothing on their minds but bringing back a bit of silverware.

The Baabaas have made it to the final of the Aoraki Rugby League competition, and all that now stands between them and

the Duncan McGregor Memorial Cup is the Country Cowboys.

The Cowboys have been the form team of the competition, and comfortable accounted for the Barbarians 40-18 in the second round of the competition.

Despite the daunting proposition, coach Steve Gamble said his

boys are looking forward to the challenge. “We had training last night (Thursday) and the boys were really excited and up for it.

“We went through mistake-free so that is a really good sign,” he said. “We sat down at training on Tuesday and went through where we thought we went wrong,

and worked out a few kinks and changed our approach.”

The game will be played at the Alpine Energy Stadium in Timaru, kicking off at 12.45, and serving as a curtain raiser to the Heartland Championship rugby clash between South Canterbury and Wairarapa Bush.

Tough decisions ahead for Kiwis selectors Kiwis selector Tawera Nikau is unsure if Tongan World Cup defector Jason Taumalolo could ever play for New Zealand again – but believes loyalty should be shown to players that are committed to the black and white jersey.

Taumalolo threw the Kiwis World Cup plans into disarray earlier this week, when he made the shock announcement to play for Tonga – together with David Fusitu’a, Manu Ma’u and Sio Siua Taukeiaho – rather than New Zealand at the upcoming tournament.

Melbourne Storm premiership winner Kenny Bromwich, West Tigers back-rower Elijah Taylor and Sydney Roosters front-rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves were initially overlooked but answered an SOS call at the 11th hour before the Kiwis 24-man squad was officially announced on Thursday.

Nikau stopped short of saying

the door would be closed to Taumalolo when future Kiwis sides are picked but, as tempting as it might be to give the world’s best forward another shot, believes selectors need to stay loyal to players that are fully invested in the New Zealand cause.

“Those will be tough decisions that we’ve got to make and discussions that we’ve got to have once we get to that position,” said Nikau.

“But if you’re picking players for this World Cup, you’ve got to show a bit of loyalty to those guys that have put their hand up and said they want to be playing.

“Those are the discussions that the selectors will have when it gets to the time but if you’re looking at players that have said ‘yep, I want to be a part of this’ that are 100 per cent committed to the black jersey, that are respecting the jersey, and all those that have gone before them, you’d certainly take that into consideration.

Taumalolo’s absence will also impact on Kiwis coach David Kidwell’s attacking plans for the five-week tournament.

strengths of Taumalolo.

The onus will now fall on captain Adam Blair and fellow ball-playing forwards Martin Taupau, Joseph Tapine, WaereaHargreaves and Kiwis debutant Nelson Asofa-Solomona to generate attacking opportunities for halves Shaun Johnson and Te Maire Martin.

In the wake of the mass exodus of players, the New Zealand Rugby League are preparing to lobby the International Rugby League Federation to tighten laws around players changing allegiances so close to a World Cup. “The International Rugby League Federation has to have a look at the rules around the eligibility during the World Cup’s and flip-flopping,” said Nikau.

“Whether you just change once and that’s it, you’ve got to play for Tonga for the rest of your career, then that’s it you’ve got to play for Tonga, or you’re going to play for Samoa.”

Broncos chairman gone Departing Brisbane chairman Dennis Watt says the time is right to step aside, despite the frustration of coming close but falling short of another NRL premiership. Watt announced yesterday he was stepping down from the role he took up in 2013, having been a Broncos board member since 2003. Trengove joins Dogs Western Bulldogs have lodged paperwork to claim Port Adelaide defender Jackson Trengove in the first transaction of this year’s AFL free agency period. The Bulldogs acted swiftly to claim the restricted free agent soon after the free agency period started at 9am yesterday. The Power have three days to decide if they will match the Bulldogs’ four-year contract offer to Trengove but that is considered unlikely. The 26-year-old found himself out of favour with Power coach Ken Hinkley late in the season and was unable to earn an AFL recall after being dropped ahead of round 21.

Trengove was the 22nd overall pick at the 2008 draft and has played 153 games for Port.

Megablast looks for luck Nigel Tiley knows it will all come down to luck in the running with his Livamol Classic (2040m) prospect Megablast at Hastings today.

Megablast is one of the fresh runners at the three-day Hawke’s Bay Carnival, but he has travelled far in preparation for the weightfor-age feature.

His latest two runs have been on either side of the Tasman and his Pukekohe trainer has him primed to give a good account of himself today.

“I couldn’t be happier with his work on Tuesday, it was as good as he’s ever worked, but he will need a bit of luck in the running if he’s to get some of it,” Tiley said.

“It’s never easy in a Group One race and you just need to get some of the breaks.”

Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network Inc. is a community initiative working to assist new comers and migrants to settle, participate and integrate into community life. Due to our current Coordinator moving onto a new position in Christchurch we are now looking to re-fill this 20 hour per week position.
