Roading improvements planned for State Highway One between Selwyn River and Rakaia will improve road safety but they’ll do nothing to deal with traffic congestion, says Canterbury West Coast AA council member John Skevington.

safety measures on the highway go only halfway and are a shortsighted measure that will do nothing to address the real problem on the highway between Ashburton and Christchurch – high traffic volumes, heavy vehicles and a two-lane highway, Skevington said.

He’s backing Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon’s call for the stretch of highway to be four laned and

said the Ashburton District Council should be getting behind the proposal.

“The council doesn’t seem to be looking at the bigger picture as far as this section of road is concerned,” he said.

The council was investing in revitalising Ashburton’s town centre, but that could be money wasted if a traffic-jammed highway made it unattractive for peo-

ple to travel to Ashburton to stop and shop, Skevington said.

“They should be pushing hard to get two lanes each way because we need to attract more businesses to town.

“I’m all for the safety measures of course but it seems they’re not really looking at the impact of high traffic volumes on Ashburton and Timaru.”

He believes the traffic safety

measures will slow traffic down and create additional problems with vehicle flows.

“Traffic flows are equally as important but they’re looking at the budget option here,” Skevington said.

Masks to save pets in fires

Dogs and cats suffering smoke inhalation after being rescued from a house fire are now more likely to survive thanks to oxygen resuscitation masks.

Brigades at Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia are newly equipped with a set of three masks each – one for large dogs, one for medium dogs and one for

small dogs, cats and other small animals.

The pets of the district have Mid Canterbury Dog Training Club members to thank for the initiative.

Member Jo Dickson said pets were part of people’s families, so after she saw an article online about the donation of similar masks to a brigade in Levin, she investigated further.

“I found out where these could be purchased, and being a member of our local Mid Canterbury Dog Training Club, I put it to a meeting to see what everyone else thought, and if we, as a club, could fundraise,” Dickson said.

With donation buckets at local businesses and a raffle, they were able to raise enough for the $300 project.

“Having a house fire is upset-

ting and stressful enough but when our much loved pets are involved it makes it worse,” Dickson said.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess agreed, and welcomed having the masks on board for the rare occasion they may be needed.

“It’s just another option that we do have if required,” Burgess said.

The Southern Motorway extension would improve traffic flows as far as Rolleston but from that point traffic would be bottle-necking into a two lane highway, Skevington said.

“Get to that point and it’ll be log-jammed again.”

Skevington is immediate past chairman of AA’s Canterbury/West Coast branch and is a member of the branch’s council.

Ashburton mayor Donna Favel said she had yet to test the water with councillors on support for a four lane highway but at this point she had not heard strong support for the project from any councillors.

The council had earlier met with New Zealand Transport Agency staff over the proposed safety improvements and additional meetings will be held for public input on November 23 at the Ashburton i-SITE from 10am to 1pm and Rakaia’s Salmon Reserve on November 24 from 11am to 2pm

Timaru App launches

Following a sting on seatbelts and mobile phone use, police are disappointed with the poor attitude that some drivers have to staying safe on our roads.

Sting results ‘alarming’ Ashburton drivers have been given a tong-up about mobile phone use and seatbelts following a police operation last week.

Police stopped 41 people in a sting targeting drivers on the main highway through Ashburton last Thursday. They were looking for drivers using mobile phones and drivers not wearing seatbelts.

Another 49 people were stopped in a mirror operation in Timaru. Police targeted those commuting to work, on the road at lunchtime and school pick-up traffic.

Constable Ben Grant of the Canterbury police highway patrol said police were disappointed and alarmed by the results.

“This operation has proved how significant this problem is

and the poor attitude that some drivers have to staying safe on our roads.”

He said using mobile phones while driving and not wearing a seatbelt were significant contributors to the road toll.

“When you don’t wear your seatbelt, the chance of serious injury or death significantly increases in the event of a crash.

“With the phones, it is purely taking your attention away from the road and how long is it before someone doesn’t see that small kid walking out behind a car?”

Of the 90 offences detected, 53 of those were people using their mobile phone while driving.

One driver apprehended in Timaru for not wearing their seatbelt also had their vehicle

impounded, as they had been previously suspended from driving.

The operation was designed to detect the offences before the driver could see a marked police patrol vehicle.

“We suspect that with the high number of apprehensions, a lot of these are people who are knowingly flirting with the law and actively keeping an eye out for police vehicles.

“Road users should be aware that we are actively finding different ways to apprehend drivers for these offences, in the interest of reducing the road toll.”

The penalty for those caught not wearing a seatbelt is $150, while operating a mobile phone when driving attracts a $80 fine and 20 demerit points.

coverage around most of the country in major newspapers, having its own sports journalist who would be picking up the slack left behind by the corporate decision was a major bonus as well.

“There’s no hiding from the fact that sport coverage has been left out to dry by some of the major players in the news world in New Zealand in recent months and we saw that as a real opportunity to bring that news back to the people of the regions,” Daniels said.

In brief Frightened feline freed A Hamilton cat had to be cut free from dryer ducting after getting spooked from fireworks. Hamilton Senior Station Officer Colin Irvine said it appeared the cat must have got a fright by fireworks at some stage and tried to quickly scramble back inside the house. However, the “skinny little cat” opted to get in through the dryer’s ducting and didn’t get very far. Armistice to remember war and celebrate peace

At 11am on Sunday the world will celebrate the end of World War One, an event that cost millions of lives.

Each year since on November 11 at 11am, Armistice Day celebrations have been held to mark the moment the guns ceased firing on the Western Front.

And this year, 100 years later, there will be special celebrations across the world.

In Ashburton the event will be marked by a traditional service, but this year the moment will have a touch of drama added with several minutes of gunfire that will cease at 11am, said RSA president Merv Brenton.

“And then there will just be a few moments of quiet just as there was in 1918.”

Church bells at the Church of the Holy Name and St Stephen’s will then start ringing as they did in the moments after the war was declared to be at an end at 11am on November 11, 1918.

“The churches were both keen to get in behind this and they’ll be ringing for two minutes and then we’ll have the usual speeches and the pipe band will play,” Brenton said.

The Baring Square west road will be closed between 9.30am and 2pm to allow displays of vintage tractors, army vehicles and an old threshing mill will be towed in and set up opposite the

The museum plans to set up a number of displays and it will be open for people wanting to research family connections with the war, he said.

The white crosses that were built by Ashburton Compulsory Military Training (CMT) vets to mark 100 years since the first commemoration of Anzac Day, will be placed in Baring Square.

From Sunday family members who bought one of the crosses will be able to claim these, either after the Armistice Day ceremony or from the RSA. Armistice Day, 100 will also be marked with two concerts in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

For the Fallen will feature the MSA Men’s Choir, the Garden City Big Band, Phoenix Rising and music and singalongs. The concerts will be held at 7.30pm on Saturday and 2.30pm on Sunday.

Choir member Rodger Letham described the show as powerful and moving.

“It’s in remembrance of those who went to war for our freedom and to acknowledge the sacrifice they made and although the performance will be reverent and sombre in parts there is also bright toe-tapping music, singa-longs, dancers, soloists and the hugely popular Garden City Big Band playing all the old numbers we know so well,” Letham said.

A car struck a pedestrian in Blenheim yesterday, critically injuring a 65-year-old man.

Emergency services attended the serious crash on Nelson St, near Hutcheson St. A St John spokeswoman said three ambulances arrived at the crash within five minutes, and a helicopter was also called to the scene. She said the person is in a critical condition and has been flown to Wellington Hospital.

Missing man mystery Police search and rescue crews will carry out another mission to find a Taranaki man missing for more than a year. Karl Roberts hasn’t been seen since crashing his car on Uruti Rd on August 1, last year. Police, LandSAR, family and friends carried out exhaustive searches for the 31-year-old but his disappearance continues to remain a mystery. This weekend a search and rescue exercise will be held in the Uruti area, about 30 minutes north of New Plymouth, to search for Roberts.

Shooting ‘justified’ Waikato police were justified in returning fire on a man who had just unleashed a barrage of shots at officers after a short car chase.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority yesterday released its findings into the shooting involving three Waikato police officers and 36-year-old Rollie Heke. The IPCA found the two officers were justified in discharging firearms at Heke, who fired a semi-automatic rifle at them in Morrinsville on August 12 last year.

Breaking language barriers

Language barriers in the Ashburton District have almost disappeared, thanks to a language line that means a professional interpreter is only a phone call away.

The Ashburton District Council has become a participating agency in the national interpretation service Language Line and that puts 44 languages at the fingertips of the Ashburton community.

Using the service is as simple as dialling the 0800 number, stating the language you require, waiting

a moment or two and a professional interpreter will join you on the phone.

The service is offered by the Office of Ethnic Communities Te Tari Matawaka.

If face to face interpreting is required, the Canterbury branch of Interpreting New Zealand also has people available.

The council now has a widely multicultural workforce and across all departments people from 19 different countries join their Kiwi counterparts.

And the council’s multi-cultural

staff is now represented in the spread of nationalities across the district, council communications manager Ruben Garcia said.

“Ashburton is home to people of many different cultures and backgrounds. We want to ensure that everyone in our community feels that they can confidently interact with us and not feel that they could be misunderstood due to potential language barriers,” he said.

The council has worked with the Welcoming Communities group to bring the language line facility

to Ashburton. “This will provide newcomers with equitable access to services that allow them to fully participate in community and civic activities,” Garcia said.

For the council the service meant doing business with the council would now be a lot easier for people for whom English was a second language, he said.

“We understand how important it is to be able to get your message across accurately, especially when dealing with applications or seeking information about services.

We hope these resources will fur-

ther increase our accessibility for everyone in our community, regardless of their cultural background.”

Nationalities represented on the Ashburton District Council’s payroll are the United States, United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Singapore, Russian Federation, Philippines, Peru, Palestinian Territory, occupied, Pakistan, Netherlands, Malaysia, India, France, China, Bulgaria, Australia, Argentina and Virgin Islands, British. They represent 16 per cent of the council’s workforce.

While Kain Parsons is fighting for his life in hospital, friends are starting the battle to support his family.

Parsons was critically injured in a boxing match against former Canterbury and Tasman Makos rugby halfback Steve Alfeld during the Fight for Christchurch event at Horncastle Arena on Saturday.

He was taken to Christchurch Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Friend Darren Jenkinson has set up a Givealittle page to raise money for Parsons’ wife and three children.

The page was still pending moderation by Givealittle but had already raised more than $9000 from 16 donors.

“Kain was fighting to raise funds and awareness for his chosen charity, Conductive Education,” Jenkinson said on the page.

“Kain is now fighting for his own life in the ICU at Christchurch Hospital. He has suffered an extreme head injury during the bout.

“For anyone who knows Kain knows he’s the first person to help someone in need. Here is a great opportunity to return the favour and support Kain and his young family.”

Disease warning Doctors, emergency departments and the general public are being urged to be on high alert after an increase in the number of people contracting the potentially deadly meningococcal disease.

So far this year six people have died from a new strand MenW – and three of those were from Northland.

The Ministry of Health has this week warned GPs and emergency departments to act swiftly if people presented with possible symptoms of meningococcal disease.

The public is also being told to familiarise themselves with the symptoms, which can initially appear like flu-like symptoms. Those with possible symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

Director of Pubic Health Dr Caroline McElnay said the number of cases of meningococcal disease has risen steadily in the past five years.

So far this year there have been 96 cases, and there were 112 cases last year. In 2014, there were only 45 cases.

Meningococcal disease had two strains and while group B is the most common type, there has been a sharp increase of group W (MenW) in the past year.

“We are keen to encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with the most frequent symptoms of this nasty disease because quick action can help to save lives. Meningococcal disease can progress very quickly and may initially look like other illnesses, for instance a flu-like illness.”

The warning comes as Northland District Health Board warns people about a particular strain, MenW, which has a high mortality rate and affects all age groups and is affecting Northland the worst.

So far this year here have been seven cases.

Tourism levy plans unveiled Money collected by a new levy on tourists will be split evenly between tourism projects and conservation as the Government plans a more hands-on role in the booming visitor industry.

About $80 million a year is expected to be collected from international visitors as part of the new levy which faced some opposition from the tourist industry.

The Government yesterday launched a draft Aotearoa-New Zealand Government Tourism Strategy which it says is an important step in ensuring that all New Zealanders benefit from “productive, sustainable and inclusive” tourism growth.

Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis and Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage said the strategy proposed a more co-ordinated and active role for government in tourism.

This was needed to make sure growth was productive, sustainable and inclusive and help support the regions.

The strategy envisaged a number of new areas of cross-agency work and aimed to ensure those

who benefit from infrastructure contribute to its costs.

A draft out yesterday says that there is increased pressure on the environment and infrastructure as well as perceptions that the character of New Zealand’s best loved places may be changing.

“Due to the relatively low population density in New Zealand, the impact of visitors in some places can be more visible. The impacts are often more pronounced when

New Airbus touches down Air New Zealand’s newest plane, the Airbus A321neo, has landed in Auckland.

The 214-seat plane landed on Monday night with nine staff on board the ferry flight which started at Airbus’ manufacturing plant in Hamburg and flew via Oman, Kuala Lumpur and Cairns.

The single-aisle A321neo (new engine option) is the first of 13 new Airbus neo aircraft (seven A321neos and six A320neos) to join the fleet over the next year.

The A321s will be used on shorthaul international flights.

The aircraft is longer than the A320s used on domestic and short-haul routes and is equipped with cutting-edge Pratt & Whitney GTF (geared turbo-fan) engines, which are more efficient and quieter than existing engines, but which have suffered some teething problems.

Pratt & Whitney said Air NZ’s A321 GTF engines are backed by a service agreement for up to 16 years.

“Air New Zealand has been a Pratt & Whitney customer for more than five decades, dating back to when its forerunner, Tas-

man Empire Airways Limited, operated the Douglas DC-8 powered by the JT3D engine,” said Rick Deurloo, senior vice-president of sales, marketing and customer support at Pratt & Whitney.

The Connecticut-based company says that since entering into service in early 2016, the GTF engine has demonstrated its promised ability to reduce fuel burn by 16 per cent, to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 50 per cent and to lower the noise footprint by 75 per cent.

Air New Zealand had delayed the delivery of the first A321 to get more certainty after engine problems emerged.

“As with new products there are sometimes infancy issues as the engine matures, and no engine is immune to those things. I think now they’ve reached a reasonably high level of maturity and reliability,” head of aircraft programmes Kerry Reeves said last month.

The aircraft, with the tail registration ZK-NNA, is expected to enter commercial service on November 23, operating flight NZ739 from Auckland to Brisbane.

The A321s are 7.5m longer than

A320s and will have 46 more seats in a completely revamped interior.

The slimline seats – upholstered with leather from Taranaki – are wider than those on existing A320s.

The middle seat will be 49cm – 3cm wider than the middle seats on the airline’s existing A320 short-haul fleet – and the aisle and window seat 47cm – 1cm wider than now.

Seat pitch (the distance between them, fore and aft) ranges from 29 inches to 33 inches (7483cm) compared to 30-34 inches in A320s used on international flights.

A second A321neo is also expected to enter service in the coming weeks, while the majority of the remaining aircraft will follow at intervals through until late 2019. The new A321neos will replace the current A320s that operate Tasman and Pacific Island services.

Air New Zealand has ordered a further seven A321neos for their domestic network, which are expected to be delivered from 2020 to 2024.

Charlie Hill, thanks for the memories E

very community has a person amongst it like Charlie Hill.

A colourful character who almost everyone will know through their work within the community – and a person who has, over the years endeared themselves to everyone they’ve met through their nature and genuine compassion.

As a youngster growing up in the thrilling metropolis of Methven, the sound of Hill as his milk truck making its way down our street every night was like Mr Whippy arriving.

A quick scramble to see if there was enough loose change around

to buy a chocolate milk was a bit of a ritual on almost a daily basis, before dashing out to the gate to try and catch the truck before it flashed on by.

What was always certain, even if there wasn’t enough change in the container, was that there was always a smile and a wave from Hill as he drove past your house.

When the days of the milk run finished, it left a bit of a hole in the community as the presence added a bit of life to often quiet streets in a small town within this district.

But no matter where you came across him after those days, Hill was, and probably always will be, remembered as the milkman with the smile.

So, it was somewhat a sad moment of reflection this week to learn that he’s hanging up the keys to his truck this week after a massive amount of time at the wheel delivering.

In many ways, it’s the end of an era too.

But, boy – aren’t we lucky to have had and to have people like him around the region.

Characters and individuals are what make any community and there’s bound to be thousands of stories out there about the milk delivery days, especially from those who were lucky enough to spend some time on the back of the truck working as a delivery person.

It’s important we acknowledge these sorts of people too.

This district is pretty tight-knit, everyone knows everyone and anyone who’s been living here long enough will well remember the sound of the milk truck com-

ing down their street each day.

Things have obviously changed with time and such a service isn’t available anymore – which is a real shame.

Because not only did it offer some steady employment for a number of kids during their schooling days, but it also was such a frequent part of life that it became routine.

And it takes something pretty special to do that.

So, this week as Charlie Hill hangs up the keys to his truck one last time, we send him a massive congratulations on a career well done and say thanks for the memories.

Anxiety, stress levels peak as exams begin

hile a lot of the focus at the moment is on the teachers, spare a thought for the students.

Thousands of senior students are starting to sit their NCEA exams from today.

Because NCEA combines internal and external assessments, for many students, credits achieved throughout the year may mean a reduction in preexam stress – they may already have a good chunk of their credits. But for others, this is crunch time, they’ll need to pull out all the stops.

I can only hope these exams go more smoothly than previous ones have.

It’s a system fraught with issues every year, despite the assessment procedure being

around 16 years old.

In that time it has managed to fill headlines with tales of woe: claims of inconsistent marking standards, questionable credit distribution, students leaving exams in tears, walkouts, complaints.

And the complaints have not just come from students either, but teachers and schools too.

Thankfully NCEA is being looked at by this current Government, but not in time for these students.

So what has the class of 2018 got to contend with?

Well, according to a spokesperson for school counsellors, anxiety and stress levels among students are at the highest yet. A “plague of anxiety” she called it.

School counsellors are seeing more students stressed, and unable to feel reassured. Some

students report that their parents have become obsessed with ‘excellences’ and that ‘achieve’ is the new ‘fail’.

That’s an awful lot of pressure, for kids already facing a tense and tough time.

So how to help students navigate these tricky next few weeks?

Experts say preparation is key – learning as many key phrases as possible, learning the basics until you know them inside out, studying from previous exams.

And as for when it comes to sitting the real deal, the pros say attempt every question, showing an attempt rather than leaving questions blank, might earn you some basic points along the way for at least showing your workings.

But also important is to breathe, unplug from social media, exercise, get sleep, eat

well, stay hydrated, and accept that exams are not the be-all and end-all – that sometimes just doing your best is good enough.

That one day high school will be a distant memory, and that you may well end up being so much more than what a piece of paper said about you.

Mediterranean style

It takes a lot to beat the flavours of Mediterranean style food.

Simple ingredients put together in the right combination can bring the sunshine right onto your plate and those dishes have the added bonus of having health benefits as well.

Tuna pasta Cooking-oil spray 200g tomatoes, quartered 1 large red capsicum, quartered, seeded 120g spaghetti 100g green beans, trimmed, cut into 5cm lengths 185g canned tuna in springwater, drained, flaked coarsely 1T red wine vinegar 2t olive oil 2T baby basil leaves

Tomato, cucumber and white bean salad

Quick chicken bake 500g ready-to-roast mixed vegetables 2T olive oil 1.5kg whole marinated chicken, cut into four portions 2 lemons, halved 4 lemon thyme sprigs, plus extra to serve 175g punnet mini capsicums, halved, deseeded

¼ C extra-virgin olive oil 3T red wine vinegar 1T finely chopped shallot 2T Dijon mustard 1T honey ¼ t salt ¼ t ground pepper 10C mixed salad greens 1 can cannellini beans, rinsed 1C halved cherry tomatoes ■ Preheat oven to moderate, ½ cucumber, halved lengthwise 180°C. and sliced New Zealand’s finest range ■ Lightly grease 2 oven trays.

Another win for AshColl XI Ashburton College’s first XI picked up their second win of their Canterbury secondary schools’ cricket competition on Saturday, beating Timaru Boys’ High School (TBHS) by four wickets.

Batting first, TBHS were all out for 108 off 39.3 overs, with opener Ben Stayt their standout performer with the bat, top-scoring with 42.

For Ashburton College bowlers Liam Sullivan took 4/26, while Angus Jemmett took 3/8.

Jemmett then opened the batting and got his side off to a good start, top-scoring with 37, while Devon Flannery was the next highest scorer with 18, as Ashburton College reached the target for the loss of just six wickets.

The win was Ashburton College’s second of the season.

The week before they beat Christchurch Boys’ High School’s (CBHS) third XI, but in their first game of the season a week prior they’d lost to the St Thomas of Canterbury College first XI. This weekend Ashburton College are back on the road, this time heading to Rangiora to play the Rangiora High School first XI. Meanwhile, a combined Ash-

burton College/Mount Hutt College team took on CBHS’s development XI blue team in Christchurch at the weekend, where they batted first and made 110, with Robert McDonald topscoring with 40.

CBHS then got the runs for the loss of just two wickets, with William Wills taking his side’s two wickets and finishing with figures of 2/9.

Welsh duo passed fit Wales’ British and Irish Lions hooker Ken Owens and flanker Ellis Jenkins have been declared fit for Wales’ clash against the Wallabies in Cardiff on Sunday. Owens suffered a broken nose during the 21-10 victory over Scotland last Saturday, and Jenkins, who missed the win over the Scots, has recovered from a shoulder injury. Elsewhere, prop Samson Lee and fly-half Rhys Patchell are continuing their recoveries from a hamstring injury and concussion, respectively, but are unlikely to be considered for Australia’s Cardiff visit. Owens was on the receiving end of a hefty collision just before halftime against Scotland. He then underwent a precautionary head injury assessment.

All Blacks on a spying mission to Twickenham

By Patrick Mckendry The All Blacks went on a secret scouting mission at Twickenham last weekend, a chance to soak up the atmosphere that 80,000 rugby supporters can create at the famous old ground and, more importantly, get some intelligence on the enemy they will face on Sunday.

Ben Smith, Brodie Retallick and others among the top-line All Blacks who travelled early to London and therefore missed the Japan test in Tokyo apparently forsook the chance to receive free tickets from the Rugby Football Union and instead arranged to buy them and therefore get in and out relatively undetected.

They were recognised by those supporters around them, with pictures asked for and given, but

otherwise they were left alone to watch England sneak home 1211 against South Africa in a test which would have taught them and their fellow All Blacks plenty about how the men in white will defend in particular.

Afterwards, England coach Eddie Jones was under the impression the All Blacks would have been at their base near Teddington “drinking cups of tea, maybe having some scones, saying ‘oh, we’ll take these guys’.

“They’ll be confident and we can’t wait to get them.”

Instead, they were at the ground, a neat little tactic which may or may not give them an advantage ahead of their first meeting with England in four years, but one which at least suggests they and the team’s management can occasionally play their cards

quite close to their chests.

Team-mate Ben Smith said of the reception he and his teammates received: “There wasn’t too much fuss when we got there – we were down the front.

“There were a few people who were after photos but they were pretty good … they let us sit down and enjoy the game.

“It was a wee bit weird being at a test like that and not being involved – just watching the opposition – but it is a great experience going to Twickenham.”

Jones stated after the test how much he was looking forward to facing the All Blacks, and the feeling is very much mutual.

This is a test that every rugby fan should be looking forward to because of the history of the two teams, the fact they haven’t played each other in four years, and the

two very different styles they play.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, who described the English as having the best kick-chase game in the world alongside South Africa, said: “A lot of people make mistakes about England and they are quite critical.

“They play different than we do, it’s not to say they play a better game or a worse game, they just play differently.

“They are a hard team to play against and they showed that on Saturday.

“They didn’t have a lot of ball but they hung in there and won a game they probably didn’t feel they’d played their best but they still won. That’s the mark of a good side.”

They are also now assisted by former All Blacks coach John Mitchell, the team’s defensive ex-

pert who along with Jones will be hell-bent on putting one over the world champions by virtually any means possible.

To do so they probably have to do what they couldn’t do against the Boks – and that’s score at least one try.

That’s something they certainly managed at Twickenham in 2012 when they thrashed a clearly tired All Blacks team 38-21 (three tries each, as it happens), and for Retallick, who started at lock alongside Sam Whitelock, it’s a test he remembers well.

“I certainly remember it – you remember the ones you lose,” he said. “Will it provide us with more motivation?

“Probably not, because it was a long time ago, but certainly the feeling in the sheds afterwards wasn’t that great.”

Return of men in white S

ummer is pretty much upon us, and one of the most exciting things about that is that it means cricket.

Lots of cricket.

And I can’t wait.

I’m not a morning person, at all, but twice in the past few days I’ve got out of bed early just to watch the second innings of the Black Caps’ T20 matches against Pakistan, and then took great pleasure out of watching Australia capitulate against South Africa on Sunday.

That’s just the start.

There’s a heap of cricket coming up in the next few months, culminating in the next Cricket World Cup in England in June.

Before that though, the Black Caps have got the rest of their away series with Pakistan, followed by Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh at home, and I’m determined that this summer will be the one when I finally attend my first game at Hagley Oval.

I used to be a regular attendee of games at Lancaster Park and

AMI Stadium, but then a couple of kids came along and I haven’t made it to a game since.

The options this season are a little limited though – of the 20 games the Black Caps are set to play this summer, only three are in Christchurch.

This summer, Christchurch is set to host the Boxing Day test match between the Black Caps and Sri Lanka, as well as an ODI against Bangladesh in February, before hosting the final game of the home summer, the third test match against Bangladesh in March.

I actually can’t remember the last time I went to a game in Christchurch.

It was before my first child was born at the end of 2012, and before the earthquakes, so it’s been a long time.

When the Black Caps took on Bangladesh in a Cricket World Cup match at Hagley Park back in 2013, I wasn’t far away from the action, but I was otherwise occupied.

coming my second child to the world.

That’s as close as I’ve got in the past six years, but hopefully this year that will change.

Earlier this year, I got the live cricket bug back.

My husband and I had travelled to Melbourne to watch the Australian Open tennis and the day we arrived there happened to be an ODI on at the MCG between Australia and England.

So we made it an even sportier holiday, by adding that to our itinerary too, and what a game it turned out to be.

It was my first time at the MCG and it was awesome.

England opener Jason Roy blasted the highest ODI score

by an England batsman and the highest score at the MCG with a knock of 180.

Australia’s Aaron Finch got 100 that day, too, but that paled in comparison.

Sadly, due to taking the early flight out of Christchurch that morning and the time difference, we didn’t quite make it to the end of that day/night match.

We headed down the road to a pub to grab some dinner, keeping up with the game on the television there, before heading back to the hotel to watch the rest from our room, struggling to keep our eyes open.

I love cricket.

It’s one of the best sports to watch on the tele, and even better to watch in person.

Growing up, mum and dad took my brother and I to countless games at the old Lancaster Park, and I still have so many great memories from those games.

Now, I’m looking forward to making the same kind of memories with my own kids.

Saint Emilion salutes

Godolphin finally grabs Cup Cross Counter has ended two decades of Melbourne Cup frustration for the powerful global stable Godolphin by winning Australia’s greatest horse race.

On a rain-affected track and ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for trainer Charlie Appleby, Cross Counter defeated Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran in an all-northern hemisphere finish yesterday.

One of the most influential racing operations in the world, the Sheikh Mohammed-backed Godolphin stable has been trying to win the Melbourne Cup since 1998.

In brief

Starting a $9 chance, Cross Counter settled in the second half of the field but produced a stirring finish to overhaul Marmelo ($12) who was initially being hailed the winner for Hugh Bowman.

McEvoy now has three Melbourne Cups after winning the race on Brew as an apprentice in 2000 and Almandin in 2016.

“I was back a bit further than what I wanted,” McEvoy said.

“I had to go my own way and we were full of running.

“I thought mate, is this happening again?

“And yeah look, I’m just lucky I can ride light on these lovely stayers prepared unbelievably well by Godolphin and Charlie Appleby.”

The race was marred by the Aidan O’Brien-trained The Cliffsofmoher breaking down as the field passed the winning post the first time.

McEvoy was a stable rider for Godolphin before parting ways to ride freelance in 2014.

Two of his three Cup wins have come since that move.

Appleby said it was every trainer’s dream to win the Melbourne Cup.

“This is all down to Sheikh Mohammad.

“He’s the one that’s given us the encouragement to take the chances in what we do.

“We have campaigned over here the last three years now and have been competitive but we have always learnt each trip what horse we felt was going to be needed on the big day.”

At only his eighth start, Cross Counter also becomes the first English-trained horse to win with Britain ending its race hoodoo in style as the four-year-old beat Marmelo by a length.

Reid still maintains faith in Star Galleria for NZ Cup

By Michael Guerin If there is a positive to your New Zealand Cup dream being turned upside down then Steven Reid has found it.

“I think the pressure is off us now,” the Pukekohe trainer says matter-of factly.

Reid and Star Galleria arrived in the South Island a month ago as one of the definite Cup favourites, with the speed he had shown in his first two runs of the season at Alexandra Park suggesting with Tony Herlihy in the sulky

anything was possible.

Since then things have only headed one way.

The wrong way.

The speedster missed one lead up race, was surprisingly beaten after leading in the Methven Cup and then was good but only after missing away in the Flying Stakes at Ashburton.

That all led to one of the worst runs of his career in the Kaikoura Cup, which Reid views with blunt honesty.

“If I was looking at that as a punter I’d say he can’t win,” he ad-

mits. “But I know the horse and I haven’t given up.

“I think he might have had a mild bug, nothing serious, at Kaikoura because he was too bad to be true.

“So we changed tactics. We gave him a mild antibiotic and three days off and a really easy time and we are going to let him miss the Cup trial (Wednesday) too.

“So his last major run we will be with a galloping pacemaker on Thursday.”

While the build-up has been anything but ideal, Reid has not

lost faith in the ability of his fiveyear-old.

“I still know how good he is and I still think he can win, even if he deserves to be a $18 chance.

“All along I have thought to win the Cup he was going to need to be driven for speed, for one run and I think the pressure being off means Tony can and will do that.

“I never discuss tactics with Tony but I can see him now driving him cold, parking away on the markers and only asking him to run a quarter and hoping a few others are dropping away.

“Whether he can win, I don’t know but you never do going into a Cup.” Reid says no thought at all was given to missing the $800,000 race.

“It is the Cup, it has been his main aim and it is not as strong as some other Cups so he will be there.”

Aussie pacer Tiger Tara is now the $3.90 favourite and unless something very odd happens this week looks set to start the public and bookies elect in the great race tomorrow week.

Djokovic No. 1 Novak Djokovic reclaimed the world No.1 ranking yesterday after a two-year absence and is assured of finishing the year there.

That’s because the man he overtook, Rafael Nadal, is done for 2018.

Nadal withdrew from next week’s ATP Finals citing an abdominal injury and announced he was having arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle.

Djokovic will be the ATP’s year-ending No.1 for the fifth time, pulling even with Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors for the second most since the computer rankings began in 1973.

Pete Sampras holds the record of six.

“Reflecting on what I’ve been through in the last year, it’s quite a phenomenal achievement,” Djokovic said.

“And, of course, I’m very, very happy and proud about it.

“Five months ago, if you told me that Novak Djokovic ... it was highly improbable at that time, considering my ranking and the way I played and felt on the court.”

The 31-year-old from Serbia was No.22 as late as June after beginning the year with a 6-6 record while recovering from surgery on his right elbow.

Djokovic has since gone 43-5, including Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the US Open to join Sampras with 14 majors – tied third behind Federer (20) and Nadal (17).

Roger Federer, who is seeking his 100th career title, headlines the other group containing Kevin Anderson, Dominic Thiem and Kei Nishikori.

In brief Sevens in action Two young Mid Canterbury sevens teams were in action in Christchurch at the weekend. The Mid Canterbury Under-15 boys’ team played in a Spring Sevens tournament and won three from three, and are likely to be back to give it another shot this weekend, while the Ashburton College Under-18 team was also in Christchurch competing at the Condor Sevens qualifiers, where they had two losses and a draw. Timaru Boys’ High School and St Thomas of Canterbury were the two boys’ teams to qualify for the Condor Sevens, while Christchurch Girls’ High School and St Margaret’s qualified for the girls. A Mid Canterbury Under-15 girls’ team will also be away this weekend competing at the first ever South Island Girls’ Under-15 tournament in Timaru.

Mid Canterbury’s top young tennis players battled it out at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Sunday in an annual singles tournament.

The Mid Canterbury Tennis Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Singles Tournament catered for

Year 3 students right up to Year 8, and it attracted 54 entries.

The Year 7 and 8 boys’ title was taken out by top seed Ryan Watt, who comfortably beat second seed Oliver Bubb in the final 9-3, but in the Year 7 and 8 girls’ draw there was an upset with second

seed Holly-Jayne Feutz beating top seed Angel Spooner 9-4 in the final.

Top seed Jake Parsons was victorious in the boys’ Year 5 and 6 title, beating second seed Riley Breen in the final, while the girls’ Year 5 and 6 title was won by top

seed Isobel Brook.

For the Year 3 and 4 girls it was a straight final due to only two entries, with Chloe Gorton taking it out over Christine van Rooyen 9-6.

The boys’ Year 3 and 4 title was won by top seed Josh Gilbert, who

came out on top after a round robin where he won all three of his games.

The mixed novice section for Years 3 and 4 students was won

by Ryan Jones, also in a round robin, after he won all three of his games.
