Retailers are calling on the Ashburton District Council to step up to the plate and to come in to bat for Ashburton’s ailing retail heart.

Evidence that they’re battling for survival was reinforced by the latest Infometrics data. This shows Ashburton’s retail performance for the last quarter was the second poorest in New Zealand.

Information provided by Janice McKay, HeartPR showed Ashburton’s retail trade was down 1.4 per cent for the quarter. For the same period Timaru’s retail business dropped by 0.4 per cent while Selwyn

District achieved a 6.4 per cent increase.

In spite of battling a tough trading environment, retailers were determined to turn things around and to bring new life back into the CBD. They refused to be defeated, McKay said.

She’s working with the town’s retailers to develop a plan that will revitalise the town centre and said key to making any plan work was having the total commitment of the council.

“We’re really keen to work with the council on this and we’ve had our heads down researching what other towns are doing with issues like this. We’ve seen towns where councils have worked with

landlords to encourage new businesses to come in with things like rebates and discounts on rates. We’d love to see that happen here, to see the council reaching out to landlords to make this happen,” McKay said.

The retail working group was gathering community feedback to make sure it was on the right track. It was very quickly becoming clear the community just wanted something to happen – and quickly, she said.

Firefighters hone skills

Paid work for youth on dole – Labour

Firefighters from around Canterbury were put to the test in Ashburton on Saturday, when the West Street carpark was turned into a combat arena.

About 23 volunteer and paid firefighters competed as individuals or in teams over a gruelling course that included running up stairs with heavy hoses, a slalom course and dummy drag.

Organiser Warren Maslin, a member of the Ashburton volunteer fire brigade who has competed at the world firefighter combat championships, said it was great to hold the regional event in such a public place so people could see firefighters working hard to improve their skills.

“We are there to help people when they need help and it is nice to have an event there they can see those skills without someone being in distress.”

The event featured national champions Ed Jackman, from Rangiora, who had the best time of the day with 1.14.75 and Hayley Rossiter, from Darfield, with 1.56.75.

She was one of four women competing.

Steve Maw, from Leeston/Airport, was second in the open with a time of 1.23.37 and Quinten McDonald was third in 1.23.53.

Maslin said the course was challenging and he was pleased to win the over 40s in 1.27.28, which was also the fourth best time of the day.

They then descended quickly to a device known as a Kaiser machine, where they used a mallet to hit a 72kg steel beam and move it 1.5 metres. They then raced through a 35 metre slalom, before picking up a hose and shooting at a target. The final task was to drag an 82kg dummy

For Ashburton, Mark Ellis was second in the over 40s in 2.07 and Maslin and Ellis teamed up with Robin Taylor and Brett Collins to be third in the relay event.

The tandem was won by Southbridge in 1.12.84 and the relay event by Cust in 1.07.97.

Maslin said it was good to have first-time entrants from

Burnham, Geraldine and Fairlie alongside experienced combat challengers from Rangiora, Southbridge, Cust, West Coast, Ashburton and Rolleston brigades.

He said the top finishers in the individual, tandem and relay events would continue to train for a South Island event and then nationals in Wellington in May.

The retail group wanted the council develop a strategy for the central business area, McKay said. Ashburton needed to create its own retail identity and it needed to reshape itself to meet

modern consumer needs for a retail heart that gave people every reason to come into town to enjoy the experience, she said.

“We’re a small team and this is a huge project. We know there are no silver bullets and that a lot of other towns have gone through

this. We’re looking to them for inspiration. We pitching to the council that we want to work with them to create a strategy.

We’re saying, let’s put a date on this.”

The retail group will meet with mayor Donna Favel on Thursday.

Labour will give young people on the dole a six-month full-time job earning at least the minimum wage if they win next year’s general election, party leader Andrew Little has promised.

The policy was announced in Mr Little’s closing address to the party faithful at their annual conference in Auckland yesterday, but National says it misses the mark.

It targets the 74,000 young New Zealanders currently not in employment, education or training.

“As a parent, as a politician, as someone who gives a damn, I won’t give up on our young people,” Mr Little says.

Young people aged 18 to 24 years who have been in the work ready category of the jobseeker allowance will be eligible.

They will be given a six-month job working on environmental and community projects including with the Department of Conservation and organisations like food banks, Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Mr Little stopped short of calling it compulsory, saying there would be exceptions including for caregivers, but the party would use every means it could to get young people involved.

Providing minimum wage and mentoring would cost a Labour government $60 million a year, Mr Little said.

Currently young people aged 18 to 24 receive up to $195 gross per week on the dole, while the minimum wage is $579.50 for 38 hours’ work. Mr Little is confident the six month period will be long enough to motivate young people, get them into a routine and start giving them skills they need for the workforce.

Wheelie bin tenders in

Tenders have closed for businesses interested implementing and developing Ashburton’s big ticket wheelie bin refuse collection service.

Ashburton District Council staff are now working through the submitted tenders, with waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin saying a preferred tenderer is likely to be identified by the end of this month.

This should see a contract signed by the end of the year.

When wheelie bins were implemented it would signal a new era in kerbside collection in Ashburton and ahead of this, the council had to work through a long process of ensuring the best deal possible was achieved for residents, he said.

“We’re taking a complete, fresh look at what we’re doing and how we can get the best out of the facilities we have and the resources out in the community,” he said.

The change from the current black bag and green recycling crates to a two bin and green crate system has come after wide community consultation.

While the bin service will be more expensive, the council is looking at ways to make the service user pays – the more you dump, the more you pay.

The current black bag systems costs $1.3 million a year to run and for many ratepayers if a user pay system is not implemented, the wheelie bin system will be more expensive than the black bags.

Wheelie bins are likely to hit Ashburton’s streets in July.

Woman’s fourth child in care A woman who went to prison for ill treating Rotorua toddler Nia Glassie nearly a decade ago has had another baby removed from her care.

Oriwa Kemp’s fourth child, born recently, was taken into care, Child, Youth and Family has confirmed.

“The decisions to remove her children have been taken in the best interests of the children and with the cooperation of the family,” CYF Auckland regional director Sharon Thom said.

“Ms Kemp is well aware of the reasons why her children are not in her care.”

The baby is doing well with a caregiver.

Decisions about the future care of Ms Kemp’s children would be overseen by the Family Court, Ms Thom said.

CYF would not go into further detail.

“Public interest is satisfied by releasing the above information which shows

that Child, Youth and Family has taken the right steps to ensure Ms Kemp’s children are safe and properly cared for.”

In one of New Zealand’s high-profile child abuse cases, three-year-old Nia died from brain injuries in 2007 after being put in a tumble dryer set to hot, swung around on a clothesline and kicked in the head.

In 2008, when Ms Kemp was 18, she was sent to prison for three years and four months for wilful ill treatment.

Ms Kemp’s partner at the time, Wiremu Curtis, and Wiremu’s brother Michael Curtis were sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 17-and-a-half years for the toddler’s murder.

Nia’s mother, Lisa Kuka, 35, was sentenced to nine years in prison for manslaughter.

Annual event sparkles

Several thousand people packed into the Rakaia Domain on Saturday night for the Rakaia Lions Club’s annual fireworks spectacular – and they were not disappointed.

Entertainment and food kept the crowds busy until the pyrotechnic display was unleased into a clear sky when darkness fell and while the weather was chilly, there was plenty of opportunity to warm up around a huge community bonfire.

Club spokesman Kevin Cameron said it was another excellent event and while people at the domain had the best view, the aerial display would have been appreciated from other

parts of the district. The night began at 6pm with music from the three-piece Ashburton band Copycats, that was followed by performances from Samantha McArthur and Ocean Waitokia and then the Mullet Man, whose antics also entertained.

Cameron said the cold temperatures led to a steady line at the hot chip caravan, though there was other hot food available and the usual sugar treats.

The event was free but people were encouraged to make a gold coin donation, the proceeds will be donated back to the community.

Cameron said there were a lot of new faces in the crowd, which had many Rakaia people as well as families from Ashburton and further afield.

New challenge for Ron

Born and bred Methvenite Ron Smith left school at a young age and went off to the North Island to work on farms.

The Methven Community Board’s newest member remembers back all those years ago, when he disliked school and dreamed of beginning his working life.

“It looked more exciting watching vehicles go down the road and doing things, rather than sitting in a classroom,” the 64-yearold said of being at Methven District High School.

He left at the age of 14 and headed north, before returning to do a mechanics apprenticeship in Geraldine at the age of 17.

When he completed that, he took up a position with Mid Canterbury Transport, beginning what was to be a long career as a truck driver.

Methven had a population of about 500 at the time.

“You knew everybody. If someone said where does such-andsuch live, you could just tell them.”

Methven also had its own train station, and railways had the monopoly on cartage. Trucks were only allowed to cart within a 50-kilometre radius, so his main job was picking up grain and other produce from farms and transporting it to the station.

Smith married wife Ally and the couple had four children, and they today have seven grandchildren. About 18 years ago he and Roger Grieve established R & R Haulage, and about three years later Smith bought out his business partner. The business sold off its transport side to Methven Trucking about four years ago, and today specialises solely in fertiliser spreading. Smith’s son Ben is his new business partner, leaving him more time for his passion of community and volunteer work.

Auckland man beaten

There are about 65 SAR groups in New Zealand with about 3500 members altogether. The national body helps make sure the traditionally-underfunded sector is heard at Government level, and is well trained and equipped.

One development Smith was happy with was board members no longer having all their regular meetings in Wellington. They have been branching out and go-

ing to groups individually to hold their meetings there, and listen to any concerns group members may have.

“That’s been beneficial,” Smith said.

“They are a great bunch of people, they are out giving their time for total strangers.”

Smith himself had contributed to a wide range of searches over the years, throughout the Methven, Canterbury and wider areas.

Nationally, SAR groups have undertaken 1026 operations in the 2015-2016 year, which saw 195 lives saved.

Other community roles Smith has include trustee of Methven Care Trust, Canterbury Ground Spread chairman, and he is a for-

mer Methven Lions Club president. And he is looking forward to his first Methven Community Board meeting, which will be held today.

He is the only newcomer on the board, having polled higher than two other potential newcomers and being the third-highest polling candidate overall. He will join incumbents Hamish Gilpin, Dan McLaughlin, Sarah Lock and Sonia McAlpine.

His goals included seeing more walkways around town, and beautifying town entrances.

In his SAR national role, he was used to dealing with bureaucracy.

“I don’t know what it takes, but if you don’t ask, you won’t get anywhere,” he said.

Police have made two arrests after a man was badly beaten in an early morning fight on Auckland’s Karangahape Road. The 23-yearold was knocked unconscious when he was kicked and stomped on during the scrap on Sunday morning. He suffered significant head and facial injuries and was taken to Auckland Hospital where he was in a serious but stable condition. A 22-year-old has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and a 21-year-old has been charged with assault with intent to injure.

Both will appear in Auckland District Court today. Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

Jed’s year to remember

It has been a year to remember for budding footballer Jed Syme.

The Hinds School student travelled to Japan in August with the Mid Canterbury 13th grade football team.

Along with his nine other team-mates, the Year 8 student competed in the 17th International Friendship Tournament in Hosoe, Hamamatsu.

While in Hosoe, Jed experienced a culture different to anything he had previously.

The food, traditions, homes, language and, particularly the weather, were all completely foreign – but he figured it would be.

Jed said the heat was one of the things he had not truly expected.

He had played a warm-up match in the 95 per cent humid and 30°C Singaporean conditions before travelling to Japan, where he and his team learned how important fluid intake was.

“I kept thinking, ‘wow, Japan is going to be hotter’.”

Jed was glad he had played the warm-up matches as he felt it had prepared him for the extreme warmth of Japan, sometimes playing in close to 40°C heat.

Playing football in Hosoe was the complete opposite to New Zealand.

“The games in Japan had four 10-minute quarters, each one with a drinks break in between.

RISING STARS “I must have drunk three to four bottles of water each game.”

The Mid Canterbury team had done well out of the 12 teams, placing third overall after reaching the semi-finals. They took on Hosoe A for the third and fourth place and won in a penalty shootout.

Jed also has fond memories off the pitch, particularly of the warm welcome he and his fellow Mid Canterbury players received.

“I remember when we arrived they waved New Zealand flags at us and cheered us.”

On Jed’s last night his second host family treated him and another team-mate at a seaside restaurant with a nine-course, traditional meal.

In the meal, he tried 12 different types of raw fish, sea snails, prawns, octopus and miso – he still can’t pick a favourite.

“The fish was so fresh it didn’t smell,” Jed said.

However, like all his meals in Japan, it was served with rice.

“It was so different than what we eat at home – except for rice, which I don’t care if I don’t eat it for a while.”

The rice will not keep Jed from visiting Japan in the future, though.

“I will definitely go back.”

Mid Canterbury 13th grade football player and Hinds School student Jed Syme is glad to be part of the team that went to Japan and the new culture he experienced.

Test run for jamboree

Mid Canterbury scouts had a test run at the weekend for what will be the biggest scouting experience of their lives in December.

Thirty-one scouts and nine leaders from the district will head to Blenheim on December 28 for a national jamboree that is held only once every three years.

They spent the past weekend in camp at Mania-o-Roto scout park off Chalmers Avenue practising the skills they will need and be tested on come the big event.

Leader Lori Rusbatch has attended every jamboree since 1996 and is looking forward to the Blenheim event.

“For most of the scouts, it is a once-in-alifetime experience. There are scouts from all over New Zealand and they make life-long friendships and do some great activities.”

The pre-jamboree camp in Ashburton helped them practise camping skills, including cooking camp food and ropework. It also allowed the different patrols to build a gateway that could be selected as the Mid Canterbury gateway at jamboree.

She said rain on Friday night was less than ideal for the tenters but they needed to be prepared for anything. Leaders were also judging the best overall display, best food and best apparatus or game that showcases lashing and knot-tying skills.

The real jamboree kicks off on December

A Gisborne police officer lost his taser while on duty on Saturday night – and police are asking the public to help find it. It’s believed the taser and holster may have come off the officer’s belt clip during a struggle with a group of youths.

David Strassman is used to talking about his puppets as if they really exist.

But sometimes he has to remind people they are just puppets after all.

The American ventriloquist’s most famous characters are the inappropriately mischievous Chuck Wood and the lovable but not-so-intelligent Ted E bear.

“Each puppet over the years, they grow in belief, in neuroses, in personality,” he said.

Talking to the Guardian from Australia where he has been touring, Strassman promoted his upcoming show, iTedE, to stage in New Zealand, including

Ashburton Trust Event Centre on March 19. iTedE holds up a “warped mirror” to technology having seduced the human race into being constantly plugged into smart phones and other devices.

“All this technology is keeping us from using our imagination,” Strassman said.

At the same time the show introduces a new technology that brings the world’s most advanced puppetronics to the stage.

In what promoters are calling “a world-first feat”, Strassman simultaneously operates five characters in a six-way conversation, performing all voices

live while using a handheld wireless remote control. He acknowledged the irony of using the most advanced technology to help portray the show’s antitechnology theme.

“It’s not only irony, it’s mindblowing and jaw dropping and very, very funny,” Strassman said.

This was the most difficult show he had ever developed, and the high level of co-ordination required came with challenges.

“There is some very funny stuff-ups, some of them planned, some of them not,” Strassman said.

Teachers post video to motivate students Teachers at Hamilton’s Fraser High School have put their best foot forward for a music video to encourage and inspire students ahead of exams which begin next week.

In the home-made music video posted on Facebook the teachers lip-sync to Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling and get their boogie on before messages of support and encouragement flash up.

The educators can be seen

dancing up a storm in classrooms, the staff room, and on school grounds.

Uploaded to YouTube by teacher Samuel Tan, a former deputy head boy at Fraser in 2002, the video is a fun gift to students before final NCEA exams kick-off next Wednesday.

“We just wanted to wish our seniors all the best for their exams,” Tan said. “We’re really into school spirit and just reinforce that idea that.”

He said the spoof video was about showing that “teachers can be humans too”.

“We can be silly and put ourselves out there too to hopefully give them a little positive uplift before they enter this period of exams.”

Tan, a digital technologies teacher, said students appeared to love the video after they let out a loud cheer when it was viewed at yesterday’s final school assembly.

It follows a similar music video posted on Facebook last year in which teachers proved they could rock it out as well as any of their students.

Messages in this year’s video include: “All the best for your upcoming exams Year 11, 12 and 13”.

The teachers ask students to “Engage with pride and dare to succeed”, and sign it “From your family at Fraser”.

The All Blacks were at less than their best

he problem with being the best in the world at something is that you can never have a bad day or you risk being knocked off your perch.

The All Blacks were at less than their best yesterday in Chicago and the Irish made them pay.

And to be fair, if we have to lose to someone I’d rather it was to the men from Ireland than anyone else.

Their celebrations will be legendary and social media was alight before, during and after the game with comments and photos from excited fans.

In Ashburton I can think of at least one household where the occasion was momentous. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the front of a particular house on Park Street painted green as a longer reminder that at Chicago yesterday, the Irish were the better team.

It’s a feel good story for rugby and perhaps they gained inspiration from the Chicago Cubs who only days before ended 108 years of pain by beating the Cleveland Indians in baseball’s World Series.

There were some highlights from the men in black – the Barrett brothers got to play together in the national team, Scott scored a try and Beauden actually got a kick over from the sideline. Their mum was there to watch.

TJ Perenara may have leapfrogged Aaron Smith in the battle to be No 1 halfback. When the ABs were seriously under the pump he came on and performed.

There were lots of highlights for the Irish and despite a black wave at the finish, Robbie Henshaw’s try sealed it in the final five minutes and set off special feelings not only in Ireland but around the world. After all, 111 years between drinks is a very long time.

What a time to be Irish, enjoy every minute of it! But remember there’s a rematch in two weeks.

We’re responsibly managing the Government’s books and have posted the second surplus in a row.

New Zealand is now just one of a very small group of countries that has the books in surplus and a growing economy.

Our policies are helping keep the cost of living low and interest rates at near record lows making it easier for small businesses to

A survey of 1000 small and medium-sized enterprises reveals 57 per cent regard National as the best party for their business to succeed.

The positive sentiment is borne out in other recent data.

New Zealand now tops the World Bank rankings for ease of doing business.

The No. 1 ranking highlights the good work this Government is doing to reduce the cost of doing business. The World Bank report also notes New Zealand’s strength in procurement through our online procurement process and that we have made paying taxes easier and cheaper.

Thanks to the entrepreneurship and hard work of New Zealanders supported by the Government’s economic plan and responsible financial management our economy is growing with more jobs, and rising wages.

I have welcomed my colleague, Minister for Small Business Hon Craig Foss, to the Ashburton District twice this year so he too knows what a lot of great small and medium enterprises are here.

Bush fires rage in NSW Firefighters continue to battle dozens of bushfires across NSW, with hot and windy conditions hampering their efforts and teenage boys blamed for starting two of them.

Two 16-year-olds are believed to be behind a bushfire north of Newcastle which spread out of control after they lit a campfire on Saturday during a total fire ban in the Shoal Bay area near Port Stephens.

The fire burnt out an acre of bushland and the boys were detained by locals before they were arrested by police.

They will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act. More than 1100 firefighters spent Saturday battling 65 bushfires across NSW, including five out of control.

An emergency warning was twice put in place for a blaze in Cessnock but was on Saturday night downgraded to a watch and act by the Rural Fire Service.

About 175 firefighters battled the bushfire, which had threatened about 50 homes at Cessnock, Aberdare and North Kitchener with backburning operations contining into Sunday.

Another emergency warning for a fire off Lone Pine Road in Port Stephens covering 620 hectares was also downgraded on Saturday to watch and act.

The fire had burnt towards the village of Limeburners Creek but slowed under cooler conditions and firefighters will continue to work on the fire through Sunday.

A third watch and act alert has been downgraded to an advice notice for an uncontained blaze that closed the Pacific Highway at Kundabung on the NSW North Coast, with firefighters protecting homes at nearby South Kempsey.

The blazes were fanned by hot and gusty conditions, with winds up to 89km/h blasting NSW on Saturday, with condi-

tions easing at night. A 16-year-old boy was charged on Saturday morning after a bushfire which destroyed at least one home and damaged other properties in Sydney’s west on Friday.

It began in the Llandilo area and spread over 300ha, prompting evacuations from schools and nursing homes before it was contained.

The youth, who was arrested at Penrith, has been charged with intentionally causing a fire and being reckless as to its spread.

The RFS says NSW could continue to experience similar weather until a cool change on Wednesday.

“It will still be warm and dry on Sunday, heating up on Monday and on Tuesday we could see some hot and windy weather before some possible cooler weather returns on Wednesday,” RFS Inspector Ben Shepherd said.

Trump rushed from stage at Nevada rally Donald Trump was rushed off stage during a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada as security officials swarmed, but the candidate emerged back on stage after a few minutes and finished his speech.

Some kind of a disturbance had occurred in the front of the room where Trump was speaking. He put his hand above his eyes to peer out into the crowd. As he did so, a security official rushed to Trump’s side and escorted him off stage. People near the front of the room suddenly scattered as US Secret Service and uniformed officers jumped the barricades to apprehend an unidentified man.

Trump later concluded his rally without further incident. It was not immediately clear what the cause of the disturbance was.

He thanked his protective agents upon his return to the stage, saying: “I want to thank the secret service, they don’t get enough credit. They are amazing people.”

A man is in custody.

The Guardian’s US West Coast Bureau Chief Paul Lewis, who attended the rally, identified him as Republican Party member Austyn Crites, 33.

Mr Lewis said on Twitter that he had spoken to Mr Crites in the wake of his dramatic arrest.

Auction of jeans delayed A 123-year-old pair of blue jeans potentially worth tens of thousands of dollars is still awaiting a new owner.

Technical glitches at the weekend prevented the auction of the Levi’s jeans purchased in 1893 in the Arizona Territory. Pitt seeks joint custody Brad Pitt is asking a judge to grant him joint custody of his six children in his split from Angelina Jolie, according to a divorce filing. The actor’s request was included in his response to Jolie Pitt’s September 20 petition to end their twoyear marriage. The actress sought sole physical custody of their six children, who range in age from 8 to 15. Custody has been the major issue in the breakup, with authorities investigating Pitt over what happened during a dispute on a private flight with his family in mid-September. The couple reached a temporary custody agreement that allowed the actor to visit his children while the investigation by a child welfare agency in Los Angeles is ongoing. The outcome of the investigation could impact how a judge decides custody arrangements, although courts in California generally favour awarding joint custody.

Allenton stays on top Allenton continued its winning way in Mid Canterbury A grade tennis on Saturday, beating Hampstead 5-1.

Rhys Cromie teamed up with Bryn Looij to beat Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell and Matt Bubb 6-3 6-1 while Nic Thomassen and Maisie Looij beat Jade Brosnahan and Mary-anne Thyne 7-5 6-4 in a close affair.

Cromie then dispatched Mitchell 6-2 6-2 in the singles and Looij beat Bubb 6-3 6-1.

Thomassen accounted for

Brosnahan 6-2 6-2 while Thyne picked up Hampstead’s only win with a 6-0 6-0 victory over Maisie Looij.

Aaron Gate on Saturday added the Tour of Southland title to his impressive list of accomplishments but it was the disappointment of a fourth-placed finish at the Rio Olympics which provided the backdrop to his win in Southland this week.

Gate, a bronze medallist in the team pursuit at the London Olympics and a world omnium champion, said the excitement of contesting a third Tour of Southland had provided the motivation he needed after missing out on a medal in Rio. After avoiding his bike in the weeks after the Olympics, he got back into training with Southland firmly in his sights.

“I stupidly told James Canny, our team manager, that I’d be up to try and have a crack at the title and he started to get quite excited and so did the other boys,” Gate said.

“To come away with this jersey is beyond words.”

Gate now has his sights on more success on the road and said he had signed to ride for Irish squad Aqua Blue Sport in the ProContinental ranks in 2017.

He said the road will be the priority, but he will fit in the track where he can.

It means the team pursuit is off limits due to scheduling, but says the omnium is an option, particularly after it was reduced from six to four events over one day which plays into the hands of a road rider more.

The 25-year-old earned his Tour of Southland victory with two big breakaways on the Bluff Hill and Coronet Peak stages. It meant he had a decent lead heading into yesterday’s final stages, a time trial and then ride into Invercargill.

Despite Gate’s big lead, there was still some drama on the final stage, with a big crash involving about 20 riders early in the stage.

The main contenders were unaffected, as they barrelled towards Invercargill at 50kmh.

Alex Frame took stage honours after three final laps of Queens Park, with Gate winning by 2min 40sec from Vink and Dutchman Sjoerd Kouwenhoven capping a strong tour with a third placing.

Four-time winner Ashburton’s Hayden Roulston was fourth overall and fifth-placed Australian Ayden Toovey the leading under-23 rider.

Olympic rower Hamish Bond finished an impressive eighth overall.

Allenton downed defending champions Tech while Lauriston held on to see off a defiant Methven in the opening round of the 2016 Pritchard Shield senior competition on Saturday.

After taking T20 honours last week, Allenton’s fine run of form continued to put Tech to the sword.

Tech won the toss and elected to field in greasy conditions.

Allenton opener Lyall Jemmett posted 21 before being dismissed lbw and Jordan Bird (20)

also made a fine contribution.

Ryan Bell then top scored for Allenton with 34 and Scott Punselie (26) put in a solid display to see Allenton through to 153.

Meanwhile Jason Morrison and Josh Colgan were Tech’s best with the ball.

Morrison removed 4 for 29 off his nine overs while Colgan took 3 for 3 off his two overs in a ruthless display with the ball.

Tech’s chase got off to a modest start as Henry Cook and Hayden Sinclair went for 7 and 5 respectively. Colgan’s 16 was the biggest contribution to the cause as

Tech were all out for a paltry 77.

Thomas Bird played the role of chief destroyer for Allenton with 3 for 16 off 5 overs while spinner Punselie and Ryan Bell also enjoyed success with two wickets each.

In the opposite round one fixture, Lauriston held on to take an opening day victory over Methven.

After losing the toss Lauriston were sent into bat in challenging conditions but openers Scott Morgan (59) and Bevan Ravenscroft’s astute batting display saw the home side through

to 60 without loss at drinks.

Alex Hooper also managed the surface well to record 30 not out as Lauriston posted 164 for 8 from their allotted overs.

Methven put in a determined display with the bat as Elliot Nicholson fired 42, but an economical bowling performance and a well-drilled fielding effort saw Lauriston through to a day one win with Methven on 149 for 7 after 45 overs.

Round two will pit Tech against Lauriston while Allenton visit Coldstream and Methven have the bye next Saturday.

Solid batting efforts gets College 1st XI home

Ashburton College’s 1st XI took a four-wicket victory over North West 2nd XI at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

James Glynn (15) and Finlay Jones (19) opened the batting for

the visitors and were dismissed

by Gareth Hunt (2 for 31 off 9) and Jarod Hopwood (1 for 30 off 3) respectively.

Ryan Hughes then top scored for North West with 66 off 53 ball, including five 4s and two big sixes.

Jamie Van Leeuwen (24) and Arnav Deb (26) also made fine contributions to see North West through to 227 for 8 off their allotted 50 overs.

In reply, College chased down the target in the 48th over.

Opener Hunt went cheaply

for 10 but Tom Ravenscroft dug in to record 59 off 103 deliveries.

Will Graham was next best with the bat with 51 not out while Josh Gill’s 27 and Sam Hall’s 23 saw College home for the loss of six wickets with two overs to spare.

Much has changed since the Brisbane Bullets last played in Auckland, almost nine years ago to the day.

But one thing has remained constant and shows no signs of deviation – Kirk Penney knows how to knock down the three-ball.

Having scored 20 points in that win over the Bullets back in 2007, Penney was a familiar menace at Vector Arena yesterday, draining six threes in a season-high haul of 30 to help the Breakers win a third straight game.

The victory continued Penney’s personal renaissance, after recovering from a slow start to the season to grab 27 at the same venue last weekend, and lifted the Breakers (4-3) clear in third place on the Australian NBL ladder.

It completed a brilliant weekend for the Kiwi club and one steeped in adversity, completing a clean sweep of a transtasman double-header despite losing point guard Ben Woodside to a potentially serious injury during Friday’s victory in Melbourne.

And it showed just how hard these Breakers will be to stop when Penney’s feeling in form.

The veteran shot six-of-12 from beyond the arc to draw plenty of attention from the opposition defence but, of equal importance to the home side’s cause, his threat was far from isolated.

Alex Pledger sparked his side with six early points before finishing with a double-double of 12 and 12, continuing on from his big night in Melbourne and providing the Breakers a good scoring threat close to the basket if the shots from range were ever failing to fall.

Tom Abercrombie made a couple of big shots to add 13 and, with Woodside watching from the bench with crutches at his side, back-up point guard Izzy Tueta coped admirably with the increased minutes to accrue a career-high 13.

It was all too much for former coach Andrej Lemanis to contain, having initially done well to contain a fast-starting opposition and take a one-point advantage into the second.

But with Penney scoring nine in the first and Pledger clearly playing with increased confidence, the Breakers quickly took control and never relented.

The home side’s lead stood at nine at the major break and, although Brisbane did well to keep the Breakers in touch, the game always felt a Penney outburst away from being decided.

Late in the game a quickfire trio of triples from Penney lifted the lead to a comfortable 11 and ensured history did indeed repeat.

In brief Chelsea hit the front Chelsea thumped Everton 5-0 yesterday to go top in the English Premier League as Manchester City slipped up with a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough. Eden Hazard scored twice while Marcus Alonso, Diego Costa and Pedro managed one apiece as Chelsea moved one point clear of City. The match was effectively over after 20 minutes at Stamford Bridge when Hazard and Alonso made it 2-0 with two goals in the space of 90 seconds.

Sergio Aguero put City in front just before halftime but Maarten de Roon equalised in injury time for Boro. Bottom side Sunderland gained their first win with a 2-1 victory at Bournemouth, Jermain Defoe scoring the winner, despite playing the last 30 minutes with 10 men after the sending-off of Steven Pienaar. Ashley Barnes scored in injury time as Burnley beat Crystal Palace 3-2 while West Ham drew 1-1 with Stoke in the other match.

Sydney streaks away Sydney FC are two games from matching the best start to an A-League season by any team after stretching their lead atop the table to five points. Whincup’s Supercars shocker lane penalty and slumped to 25th, while the Aucklander recovered five places from the spin-out to finish third.

The result sent Whincup backwards in the title race, slumping 197 points behind van Gisbergen with one fewer race to catch him.

Whincup made a bee-line for his upstart team-mate after the race to apologise for the “clumsy” move.

“I feel bad,” he said.

“Everyone wanted that to happen and we were trying to make sure that didn’t happen.

“I locked the rears, had a much quicker car than Shane and he sort of half left me through and I made a bit of a meal about it.

As Supercars blunders go, crashing into your team-mate is a doozy.

It’s not a fate that has befallen six-time champion Jamie Whincup often in his racing career, but one he had to apologise for at the Auckland Supercars meet yesterday.

In a last-gasp effort to make ground on fellow Red Bull Shane van Gisbergen, Whincup attempted to overtake the title leader at Pukekohe Park’s hairpin turn eight.

He missed.

Instead, both Holdens were sent to the grass after a low-speed clash with mammoth championship ramifications.

In brief Schmidt a big loss Has New Zealand rugby missed a trick letting Joe Schmidt slip through its fingers? Forget Eddie Jones and England. It is Schmidt and Ireland who are the real emerging forces of European rugby. Earlier this year, it was rumoured Schmidt was homesick and wanted to return to his native New Zealand. The whispers were out that New Zealand Rugby was keen to lure the 51-year-old former schoolteacher home with a Super Rugby head coaching job. But last month, NZ Rugby let him slip away after Schmidt opted to remain in Ireland, extending by two years his stint as head of the national team to take in the Japan tournament.

Kangaroos keep out Kiwis

By Michael Burgess Shaun Johnson denies the Kangaroos have a psychological hex over the Kiwis, despite another trans-Tasman victory yesterday.

Australia won 14-8 in Coventry, with a late rally from the Kiwis making the contest appear closer than it probably was.

Jordan Rapana crossed in the 78th minute, before a last roll of the dice saw Johnson come desperately close, as he cut through but was held up over the line.

But for most of the match the Kangaroos were in control, and ultimately deserved their third successive victory over the New Zealand side.

But Johnson denied the Australians now have the mental edge.

“No [they don’t] – and that is probably what has come out of today for us,” said Johnson. “We definitely don’t think they have that mental advantage over us.

“It’s just a game where we weren’t good enough again. They

executed when they had to and we defended very well in the second half.

“We didn’t let a try in and we were able to score.

“What ifs, missed opportunities, whatever ... they were the better team today.”

However, like many of his team-mates, Johnson stressed the ongoing improvement in this Kiwis side.

That’s a valid point.

New Zealand’s attacking work was mixed, as they failed to take

advantage of the few opportunities that came their way.

But they showed genuine grit to stay in the match, especially as Australia led 10-0 after only 14 minutes, whereas in Perth they just fell away.

“We definitely feel like we are improving,” said Johnson.

“If you look back to where we were in Perth, they did a job on us that day. There were areas of the game that we didn’t quite get right but generally we are heading in the right direction.”

The Irish media has gone into meltdown after their national rugby team’s history-breaking win over the All Blacks. Ireland’s major news websites all led with their side’s epic 40-29 victory as they whipped the country into a celebration of national fervour after finally claiming the All Blacks’ scalp after more than a century of trying. “After the Cubs had ended their 108 year drought, there was something in the Chicago air. It’s been a long time coming. Just the 111 years, that’s all. But at last, that black stain in Irish rugby has been removed, with a first ever victory over the All Blacks in 29 attempts,” wrote the Irish Times’ Gerry Thornley.

Big loss for punter An All Black punter will be counting the cost of the loss to Ireland as hard as any of the men in black after placing a $100,000 bet on the team to remain undefeated in 2016. But one lucky person who bet $10,500 on Ireland to win 35 minutes into the match doubled their money with the odds at $2.

With 30 minutes to go, two other people put $10,000 on Ireland at $1.27 and $1.25 respectively. Going into yesterday’s test in Chicago, the Irish were paying $9 for the win and the Blacks $1.04. - NZME

Glen Ella proved wrong Wallabies coach Michael Cheika is pleased his side was able to prove wrong the criticism of former Australian fullback Glen Ella with a clinical 32-8 victory over Wales to open their Spring Tour. Ella made headlines this week with a highly critical online column in which he wrote off the Wallabies’ chances of winning the grand slam and said Cheika was skating on thin ice should Australia struggle on tour. Cheika was happy to point out, after Australia put their most complete 40-minute performance of 2016 in the opening half while Pocock was on the field, that Ella was wrong.

Confidence key for stayer A little bit of maturity and a healthy dollop of confidence that comes from victory has been the key to finding the best from promising stayer Bloodstream who made in four wins in a row at Riccarton on Saturday.

Trainer Terri Rae had plenty of faith the five-year-old Duelled gelding could show his true potential once he could escape from some of the misfortune that had dogged his earlier runs.

“He needed a little bit of time but more than anything he just had to get some luck in his races,” she explained.

“It seemed like every start he had something go wrong which I do think dented his confidence.

“Once he got that first win on the board it really got him going and he has just gone from strength to strength.

“He has really blossomed and you can see that in him now.”

Rae was delighted with what she saw on Saturday as the gelding settled beautifully in midfield during the early stages of his rating 85 2000 metre contest.

Set alight by rider Danielle Johnson at the top of the straight, the gelding displayed a rapid turn of foot to reel in the leaders and charge clear for an impressive victory.

Murray finally gets to No. 1 Andy Murray will become the oldest firsttime world No.1 since Australian John Newcombe at age 30 in 1974 when the rankings are updated today.

The 29-year-old Briton will take over from Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings after his Paris Masters semi-final opponent Milos Raonic pulled out through injury yesterday.

“Yesterday at I believe 4-2 in the first set I started feeling some pain in my leg,” fourth-seeded Canadian Raonic told a news conference, referring to his match with Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

“I didn’t think too much of it at that point. I had an MRI half an hour ago ... they found that I have a grade one tear in the right quadriceps.”

Murray was guaranteed to climb from second to first in the rankings if he reached the final.

Serb Djokovic, who has been No.1 since July 2014, was knocked out in the quarterfinals by ninth seed Marin Cilic on Friday.

The Croat was then beaten 6-4 6-3 in the semi-finals on Saturday by American John Isner.

Murray will become the first Briton to hold the top spot, no matter the result of Sunday’s final, and the 26th player to reach No.1 since the rankings started in 1973.

Reaching the summit has been a long process for Murray, who has spent 76 weeks at No. 2, a position he reached for the first time in 2009.

A turning point in the Scot’s career came when he hired Ivan Lendl as a coach in 2011.

During their first stint together, Lendl managed to turn Murray from a four-time Grand Slam runner-up into a two-time major champion.

Murray won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and the US Open title later the same year.

In 2013, he became the first British man to triumph at Wimbledon in 77 years.

Before winning the US Open, Murray was 0-4 in grand slam finals.

Only one other man in the Open era, which began in 1968, lost his first four major titles matches – Lendl.

The Czech-born baseline player then went on to win eight grand slam singles titles during a 17-year career, spending 270 weeks at No.1.

Murray replaced Lendl with Amelie Mauresmo in 2014.

Though the Frenchwoman helped him climb back up the rankings following back surgery, the partnership ended in May this year without any new major title.

The Scot reunited with Lendl before Wimbledon, a week after Murray lost to Djokovic in the French Open final.

First-up loss for Joseph Argentina’s Nicolas Sanchez scored two tries as the Pumas overpowered Japan 54-20 yesterday in the hosts’ first test under new coach Jamie Joseph. Sanchez kicked three penalties and added a try late in the first half as the visitors took a comfortable 21-6 lead at halftime.

Any chance of a comeback by Joseph’s team was dashed when Santiago Cordero ran in a try three minutes after the break which Sanchez converted for a 28-6 lead.

Joseph had named 13 uncapped players to the 23-man squad.

Irish eyes are smiling

BY GREGOR PAUL They blew it once and it hurt them.

Now Ireland have finally made history and beaten the All Blacks, 40-29. It has taken them 111 years to do it.

They have come so close before – most notably the last time they played.

But now, they can say they have done it, they have beaten the All Blacks and oh how they deserved it.

They played their hearts out for 80 minutes this time.

Not 79.

And this time they didn’t feel the weight of history and buckle.

They continued to play rugby all the way to the hooter and they won.

They won in what has now become a ridiculous year of unfancied champions.

There was Leicester in the English Premiership.

Then the Cubs ended 108 years of pain earlier in the week and everyone wondered whether one more crazy story could

be written. Could Ireland be the next to make history?

Could they do it?

Most sane folk said no.

The All Blacks were unbeatable.

Romantics everywhere hoped otherwise, but knew deep down they were asking too much.

But the sporting gods obviously have a taste for this kind of feel good story and they smiled upon Ireland.

The All Blacks helped them no end, too.

Feeling the pressure for most of the game, they only had a 15-minute spell when they played like they can. Their skills wilted for the first time in 19 tests.

They dropped balls.

They missed tackles and they were indecisive and ultimately, they didn’t have the escape from jail card they had in 2013.

And to be fair to the men in green – the entire nation of Ireland – that was no bad thing.

Ireland were the better side.

just maybe, wanted it more.

It was unbelievably similar to the game in 2013. Ireland posed all the same questions and New Zealand, again, had none of the answers.

Ireland hit hard and fast when they had the ball, working the narrow side and finding acres of space around the ruck.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen had said before the game that Ireland would have done their analysis, studied everything about the All Blacks so far this year and seen things to exploit.

He probably didn’t imagine that they would have seen as much as they did.

Ireland ran riot in the first 40 minutes.

They owned the ball, they owned the lineout, they held the scrum and they tackled on the gainline.

The All Blacks couldn’t get anything going and would have been more disappointed than surprised at how much they missed Sam Whtitelock and Brodie Retallick.

It wasn’t just the catastrophic

lineout that highlighted the missing twin towers, it was the intangible sense that New Zealand were being bullied.

Twice Jerome Kaino, such a force with a No 6 on his back, was held up by Irish defenders and forced to concede a scrum.

Twice Ben Smith was beaten in the air at the kickoff – allowing Ireland to begin their attacks from deep inside territory.

These incidents weren’t pivotal, they were more indicative of the troubles the All Blacks were having getting into the game physically and as the pattern of Ireland scoring and All Blacks faltering continued, the more it felt like Ireland were going to make amends for 2013.

The All Blacks were never going to come to Chicago and not fire a shot.

The black wave was always going to come, it was just a case of how hard, how long and how well Ireland would be able to deal with it.

The answer to that was better than they ever have at any time in the last 111 years.
