Ashburton police are on the hunt for a man who attempted to abduct an 8-yearold girl in Ashburton yesterday.

Last night police were interviewing Allenton residents in the Harrison and Smitheram streets area after being alerted to the alleged incident about 4.15pm.

Senior Sergeant Mark Offen told the Ashburton Guardian the young girl was “grabbed” from the end of her driveway on Harrison Street.

“He’s then manhandled her to Smitheram Street where he has tried to put her into a dark green car,” Mr Offen said.

He said the girl managed to break free from the offender and get to safety, while the man took off in the car.

“She’s a brave wee girl.”

Police had spoken to the girl’s mother last night, who was “obviously upset with what has taken place”.

They also interviewed residents in the immediate area, with the busy Allenton Shopping Centre just over 100 metres from where the offender parked the car.

A Harrison Street resident, who witnessed the girl shortly after the alleged attempted abduction, said she saw the “visibly upset girl” talking to a woman.

The resident was on her way to the Allenton Four Square.

“I presume the woman would have asked what happened because I heard the girl say he had dark hair,” the 24-year-old said.

“This is a mixed community, but I would definitely call it a safe one.

“This is out of the ordinary and you wouldn’t expect this to happen here.”

Mr Offen said police wanted to hear from anyone who had any information into the incident on 307-8400 or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Actor Sam Neill said he was never given a chance to be a part of the fourth movie instalment of Jurassic Park, despite being offered a role more than a decade ago. Jurassic World, which will be directed by Colin Trevorrow and is to star Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson, will be released in June, 2015. The movie is in production in Hawaii and the storyline picks up 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park III which was released in 2001. Neill starred as Dr Alan Grant in the first three Jurassic Park movies of which the original and sequel were directed by Steven Spielberg.

Taylor Swift in cat fight Taylor Swift suffered a fashion mishap when her pet cat attacked her as she was getting ready for New York’s Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The country singer was being fitted when her manic moggy Meredith got her claws out - literally. Swift tweeted, “That moment when your cat casually walks up, then abruptly ATTACKS your custom satin Oscar de la Renta gown during your fitting for (the) Met Ball.” The country star was expected to show up on the red carpet in the gown. It is not known if any damage the cat did prompted the singer to rethink her outfit.

Television presenter Jeremy Clarkson and his wife are getting divorced after 21 years of marriage, it has been reported. Frances Clarkson, 52, who works as her husband’s manager, has reportedly filed for divorce from the 54-year-old Top Gear star. Clarkson’s first wife, Alex Hall, told London’s Daily Telegraph that the current Mrs Clarkson “deserves every penny” of any settlement. He is estimated to have a fortune of STG30 million ($A54.76 million). Miss Hall said: “She’s done her penance. It is her hard work that has made him into the idol he is today.

“Jeremy is the frontman, but behind the scenes she was the swan paddling frantically beneath the surface. So she deserves every penny she gets - she’s worked for it.”

It was reported that Mrs Clarkson has recently been on holiday to Majorca with a female friend to toast the end of her marriage.

Clarkson’s spokesman and his wife both declined to comment on the reports, the Telegraph said.

The BBC presenter was embroiled in controversy last week when it was claimed he used the N-word.

A photo op with a squirrel that went awry has left a teenager flustered but unhurt.

Seventeen-year-old Brian Genest, of Auburn, said he saw what appeared to be a friendly squirrel on a hand rail while walking through John Chestnut Park near Tampa, Florida.

He was on a trip looking at colleges. Genest took a selfie of himself and the squirrel. But the flash and noises from his camera phone scared the squirrel, which climbed under his shirt and hung onto his back before scampering out. “He was just in that spot where my arm can’t reach him,” Genest said. “I threw myself on the ground, and that scared him off.” Genest’s mother, Paula Wright, snapped photos of the hoopla, originally posted to his Instagram feed along with his selfie. His mother said the spectacle taught him a lesson. “I think he got a little lesson from the squirrel that he’s not really its buddy,” she said. She said neither her son nor the squirrel was harmed.

Three-bin system comes in tops

When it comes to how their rubbish is collected Ashburton households are keen for change.

As part of a review of its kerbside collections, the Ashburton District Council decided to ask residents how they wanted their rubbish and recycling dealt with.

And the answers are in, giving the council a clear mandate for change, away from the current black rubbish bags and green recycling bins to a three wheelie bin option.

More than 46 per cent said they wanted the Rolls-Royce collection – three wheelie bins for rubbish, recycling and organic waste, along with the green bin for glass. This option will cost ratepayers more money. Other options were two wheelie bins (no organic collection) and the green glass crate or the status quo.

While the council struggled to rouse any interest in its annual plan, which details how rates

money will be spent next year, it was overwhelmed by residents’ response to the rubbish collection survey. Survey forms were sent to every household with 1925 of those returned.

Andrew Guthrie, asset manager says the results of the survey will help the council decide which option it wants to explore further for the future of the district’s rubbish and recycling collection.

“Once council has evaluated all available information, it will then decide on a preferred option and carry out a full consultation with the community on that option in August this year,” he said.

The council was pleased with the response and people would have an opportunity to take part in wider consultation in August, Mr Guthrie said.

“This is the stage when people can put forward their full comments and ideas.”

150 couples say ‘I do’ in Ashburton

Marriage is definitely not going out of fashion in the Ashburton District, but divorce is on the wane.

The number of couples promising to love one another for the rest of their lives hit 150 last year, the highest in five years

and the second highest for eight.

At the same time, the number of divorces granted fell to a modern day low at 48.

Over the past eight years, the number of marriages peaked in the district at 170 in 2009, and divorces a high in 2010, at KINhit G 81. SINGLE Basepoint for marriage TheBed+ low numbers was 2008, 114.

Over the eight years between the 2006 Census and last year’s population count, however, the growth in individuals in the district who listed their marital status as divorced increased by 13 per cent, far outstripping the growth in those who said they were married, 4.5 per cent.

The 2013 Census showed that of the 24,618 people aged 15

and over, 12,345 said they were married with 801 saying they were divorced.

The national estimate is that there are 9.4 divorces for every 1000 existing marriages in New Zealand.

The growth in individuals who said they were partnered and those who indicated they were not grew by a similar amount – 10.5 per cent.

Jobseekers enticed to Chch

Ashburton employers struggling to find staff will soon be able to tap into a new source of labour.

The Government plans to invest $3.5 million in a project to help beneficiaries around New Zealand relocate to Canterbury to plug gaps in its labour market. And Ashburton is on the list as one of the target communities along with Hurunui, Waimakariri, Selwyn and Christchurch City.

In announcing the jobseeker incentive, social development minister Paula Bennett said up to 1000 beneficiaries could

receive a one-off payment of $3000 each to move to Canterbury if they had a full-time job offer.

The new scheme was given cautious support by Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley. “Beneficiary skills are the key. There are definite opportunities here, particularly in the farming sector, for skilled workers. My concern is these people might be looking for entry level positions and I don’t know how many of those we have,” he said.

Because of the district’s low unemployment, Mr Brawley said the scheme could well find employers who were keen to

take some of the beneficiaries on.

“I’d be surprised if many wanted to work on farms, however, because that could be quite a culture shift, but for some, it could be the change in their environment they need.”

The deal will see Work and Income work closely with employers, linking them with beneficiaries best suited to their work. This could be across a raft of employment sectors such as construction, hospitality and retail, Ms Bennett said.

While the deal is open to all beneficiaries, it will focus on 18–24 year olds. The payment is designed to help with reloca-

tion, accommodation, clothing and other purchases that would be needed to help the beneficiaries settle in Canterbury.

The payment is non-taxable and exempt from income and asset testing.

The deal comes with conditions, however – the job offered must be for more than 30 hours a week and the employment period must be for longer than 91 days. For beneficiaries the incentive to perform comes in the requirement to pay back the $3000 if they go back on a benefit within three months without a good reason.

Ashburton had a total of 269 registered jobseekers in March.

Wet month makes mark on record books

Last month was the wettest April ever recorded for Mid Canterbury, NIWA data released yesterday shows.

The figures showing the most rainfall since records began in 1909 have come as no surprise to Mid Cantabrians, who are still recovering from the cabin fever they contracted during the big wet.

“Depending on your location, the abundant rainfall was either a blessing or a curse,” the NIWA summary said, adding for those in the eastern South Island it was a curse as it was a case of enough is enough.

The data shows 301 millimetres of rain was recorded for Winchmore AgResearch Station for the month, which was six times the normal level, and the highest April total since records began in 1909.

The data included an extreme

one-day rainfall event of 97 millimetres on April 28, the highest April one-day level for Winchmore since records began on that variable in 1927.

The data brought no surprises for Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers president Chris Allen.

“I think NIWA have really stated the obvious that every farmer would understand in Mid Canterbury,” Mr Allen said.

“Climate is a funny thing, it changes quite quickly,” he added, mentioning strong winds which gusted through Mid Canterbury on Monday night.

Mr Allen said there had not been a nor’west wind for some time, but when it struck on Monday it was “pretty shaky” and “it took us back to October last year”.

Mid Canterbury was ravaged by two gale-force wind events in September and October.

Currie quick Braden Currie attempted to outrun a car and managed it for about 46 kilometres in a run for a good cause recently. He was one of 35,000 people in 32 countries who took part in the inaugural Wings for Life World Run in pursuit of a cure for spinal cord injury. Currie did 45.38km, an extraordinary effort by the Coast 2 Coast champion, coming 29th overall in the world while Antonia Elliot ran an impressive 31.39km to take out the fastest female in New Zealand.

Lemawork Ketema of Ethiopia won a knife-edge men’s race, completing 78.57km before being hauled in by the Catcher Car in the race with no fixed finish line.

Elise Selvikvåg Molvik of Norway covered 54.79km in Stavanger to take global honours in the women’s race.

Principal steals A principal and her husband who admitted siphoning more than $30,000 from a decile one school in South Auckland have been sentenced to home detention and community work and ordered to pay reparations to the school.

Colleen Margaret Gray, 66, pleaded guilty in March to nine charges of dishonestly using a document and two of using a forged document.

Her husband Bruce Kenneth Gray, 65, pleaded guilty to four charges of dishonestly using a document.

The charges related to money which, instead of going towards pupils’ education at Mayfield Primary School in Otara, the couple splashed out on themselves, using it to jet to Australia and to London. - APNZ

Police urge vigilance Farm visits help stem quad bike injuries after boy’s death

The devastated family of Timothy George MacAvoy are facing every parents’ nightmare as they prepare for the funeral of their four-year-old boy.

Police yesterday released the name of the local preschooler who died on Saturday in Auckland’s Starship Hospital from injuries he sustained in a quad bike crash on a family member’s Tai Tapu farm on April 27.

Police said Timothy had been visiting a small farm east of Tai Tapu township where he had been riding on the quad bike, sitting in front of a relative, a man aged in his 60s.

“The vehicle was being driven down a gentle grassed slope and struck a tiedown which had been strung between two trees, after one was blown over during a recent storm,” a police spokesman said.

“The boy and the adult were both flung from the bike. The boy suffered severe spinal injuries and was taken to Christchurch Hospital, before being transferred

to Starship Hospital the following day.”

The adult rider suffered spinal and chest injuries and was treated at the Burwood spinal unit before being discharged, he said.

Inspector Al Stewart, Canterbury road policing manager, said an investigation into the crash was continuing, but no decision had been made as to whether charges would be laid.

He said full circumstances surrounding the fatality were yet to be determined, but the incident served as a reminder that children were vulnerable on quad bikes and other vehicles on rural properties.

“It is a tragedy when a young life is lost in such circumstances. In any situation, the combination of farm vehicles and young children is a potentially hazardous one,” he said.

“Police and rural community leaders have been consistent in urging farmers and rural residents to be extra vigilant and to avoid putting children at risk.”

The family requested privacy and asked media did not attempt to contact them.

Work Safe New Zealand has significantly beefed up its enforcement on New Zealand farms, but the farming community needs to step up to stem the flow of quad bike accidents.

The workplace safety authority’s national programmes manager Francois Barton said Work Safe New Zealand now conducted around 1500 farm visits a year.

“With this we have seen a nine per cent Primary Logo reduction in quad bike injuries . . . we have also seen an improvement in safety behaviours, helmet sales have more than doubled and helmet use has increased.”

But Mr Barton said that was a “moderate improvement”, and it was up to the farming sector to “take ownership of the problem”. He said a quad bike safety action group was meeting next Monday to discuss how to better support quad bike safety.

Federated Farmers health and safety spokesperson Jeanette Maxwell said it was not common practice to carry children on quad bikes, and under 16s should not operate adult quad bikes.

Federated Farmers has been lobbying to have quad bikes reclassified as agricultural vehicles.

Legal high sales plunge in Rakaia

He blamed the intense media coverage of the ban, which is expected to come in on Thursday.

The lack of sales could mean Mr Davies has a wealth of unsaleable stock left over, but he was not concerned, saying he would get cash back from the manufacturer for returning the products.

He said customers were disappointed about the Government’s plans and many would attain the soon-to-be-illegal products off underground dealers, or give up for good.

Rakaia Community Association chairman Neil Pluck said the fact Mr Davies was struggling with sales indicated “young New Zealanders had woken up to the fact these drugs aren’t going to be around much longer and they’re moving on with their lives”.

“I don’t wish Garry to go broke, I just want him to wake up as a parent and to do something constructive with his business,” he said.

Mr Pluck also welcomed news that animals would not be used for safety testing, saying it would only make it harder to get the products into the country.

Rakaia legal high retailer Garry Davies says he has experienced a dramatic drop in sales after plans were revealed to ban synthetic drugs.

It comes as the Government confirmed Monday it would not allow testing of the mind altering drugs on animals to prove their safety, a move that has pleased a local opponent to the legal high industry.

Mr Davies told the Guardian his business has seen a 40 per cent drop in turnover a week since the Government indicated it would ban the sale of psychoactive substances which will not be allowed back on shelves until they are proven a low risk.

It has surprised Mr Davies, who has significantly cut the price of his products by up to a third of the price, and it has not reflected predictions users would stockpile packets of legal highs.

“Sales have been a lot slower because I think everyone is thinking they are already banned, what’s happened in my sales is the opposite of what every thought was going to happen,” Mr Davies said.

Bagging bargains pays off

Ashburton youth groups will benefit from a $5000 windfall raised through the Ashburton County Lions inaugural It’s in the Bag accessory sale.

The pop-up shop was open for just two days last week and proved a great fundraiser concept.

Ashburton County Lions projects director Betty George said the group would definitely organise another one as it was very worthwhile.

“It went well. We sold most of it, it was just steady all day,” she said.

“We want to thank the public for their support, it was amazing.”

There was a range of pre-loved jewellery, scarves, handbags, hats, gloves and

belts, along with shoes and boots and by closing time on the final day most of the items were sold.

They had all been donated to the County Lions by its 50 members, or their friends.

Mrs George wanted to thank people who donated items for sale; the quality products made it more worthwhile for buyers, and easier to raise money.

She said being in former Fashion Focus store in the Countdown complex – once again vacant - had also proved a great location with people popping in while out and about.

There were one or two visitors from out of town who turned up on Saturday after visiting the Vintage Car Club swap meet, Mrs George said.

Nigella charms locals Nigella Lawson proved a sweet delight for fans as she filmed a chocolate commercial in Wellington this week.

The celebrity chef, who touched down in New Zealand on Saturday, was at the 0800 440 290 www.polaris.co.nz Wellington Railway Station for filming of a Whittaker’s advertisement.

Clad in a figure-hugging burgundy dress, Lawson handed out chocolate to extras and members of the public.

“It’s lovely isn’t it,” she said of the

chocolate during the shoot.

Wellington resident Christina Saunderson caught a brief glimpse of Lawson. “I’m a big fan. I’ve watched all of her shows,” she said. “Her eye make up is always absolutely to die for.”

Onlookers were permitted to watch filming near the main entrance of the station building, with gasps and cries of “ooo” when Lawson was seen inside the white set.

100 sheep stolen from Overdale farm

A Mid Canterbury farmer is “irate” after rustlers stole an estimated 100 sheep worth $9000 from his Overdale farm, police say.

It is the second major stock theft in the area after around 60 calves were stolen from nearby paddocks last December, prompting senior constable Mike Jackson to confirm a possible link between the incidents.

Mr Jackson said the latest theft happened overnight on April 23 when about 100 hoggets were loaded on to a large truck by a number of offenders near the State Highway 1 and Pendarves Rakaia Road intersection at Overdale.

“We believe that a large truck had to be used to take them away, we are talking a large number of hoggets here.

“We also believe they used a loading ramp that was in the

paddock to get them on to the truck,” Mr Jackson said.

“The farmer is absolutely irate, and frustrated about it.”

Stock rustling has been a hot topic in Canterbury over recent months, with Federated Farmers claiming it costs the country up to $120 million a year.

Mr Jackson said reported stock thefts were not that common in Mid Canterbury, but he guessed many cases went unreported, particularly when “just

the odd one goes missing”.

Rustling is classed as general theft, but offenders found selling meat on the black market can be charged under the Animal Products Act, facing up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

Mr Jackson was at a loss to explain what had happened to the stock, and had no major leads.

Federated Farmers meat and fibre chairperson Jeanette Maxwell said in yesterday’s Guard-

ian column that court punishments did not got far enough for rustlers, some who brutally killed stock.

“Hopefully the major Canterbury rustling ring broken by police will see a much stiffer punishment if the offenders are found guilty,” she said.

A skydiving school which has over 1000 customers per year has established at Ashburton Airport.

The good news for tourism in Mid Canterbury comes following the New Zealand Skydiving School at Pudding Hill shutting down and moving to Auckland.

Skydiving Kiwis has been based at hangar three at the Ashburton Airport for one month, after moving from Rangitata Island where it was established in 2011.

Founder and director Lee Barraclough has high hopes as he makes his foray into Ashburton, not only wanting to grow the clientele but aiming to host the New Zealand skydiving championships in the town within three to five years.

He is himself a skydiving

champion, having won gold at the Australian national skydiving championships last month.

He said the move from Rangitata Island was motivated by increasing numbers of visitors from New Zealand and around the world, not only wanting to undertake tandem jumps with the Skydiving Kiwis team, but also wanting to participate in courses on solo jumps. Seven students had so far been involved in the course at Ashburton, from countries including Brazil, New Zealand and Germany.

Mr Barraclough said Ashburton Airport was closer to Christchurch International Airport so easier to access for tourists, and also had hangar facilities which were not available at Rangitata Island.

And in terms of scenery and jumping experience, Ashburton was “ten out of ten”, said Mr Barraclough, who has undertak-

“You can see Kaikoura, Lake Ellesmere, down the east coast, the Rakaia River, Ashburton River, flowing straight up to the alps, Mt Cook that’s 12,000 feet high, which is the same height as what we jump from, and then

there’s Ashburton just sitting there in the middle of the patchwork quilt we call the Canterbury Plains.”

He said the school did 1000 tandems per year, and that was 1000 people plus their family and friends who would now be visiting Ashburton and spend-

ing their money here.

And Skydiving Kiwis would be filling a niche following closure of the Pudding Hill business.

The New Zealand Skydiving School website said the move to Auckland was made last month, but tandem jumping would continue.

False teeth, tennis racket in assault tale The evidence of witnesses during a defended hearing in the Ashburton District Court yesterday was compared to a child’s fairytale by the presiding judge.

Che Mapu successfully defended himself against a charge of assault, which allegedly occurred on October 18.

Judge Joanna Maze heard an escalating tale, involving increasing numbers of people; the relevance of the defendant’s false teeth, a tennis racket and a box of “weed” were also revealed, before she dismissed the charge as unproven.

The complainant described ar-

riving at the address on an October morning last year.

Mapu was on the roadside talking to her niece. He left the scene, and the two women went inside, and found the key to an internal garage door missing.

Soon afterwards Mapu returned with the key, and the complainant refused his request to take his “stuff ” from the garage.

She claimed to have been standing just outside the front door, when Mapu “pushed” past her, using his hands, and made his way to the garage door.

“I didn’t want him to go into

the garage,” she said.

The complainant’s niece, the first witness called, arrived home in the afternoon to find Mapu there. Her aunt arrived, and soon all three were standing outside the front door arguing. Mapu “barged” past. Both parties then pushed and shoved each other “He kept saying he wanted something from the shed (garage) – she kept saying give me the key back.”

Under cross examination she admitted there was a “box of weed” in the shed, and hitting Mapu on the head with a tennis

racket during the fracas, in defense of her aunty.

Witness number three was summoned to the scene by way of a phone call.

According to his version, he was outside the front door and the two women were just inside, when Mapu arrived and “shoved” his way inside.

The women ran ahead to the garage door and during the ensuing scuffle Mapu lost his false teeth. The witness intervened when he saw Mapu pinning the complainant to the wall with his hands around her throat.

Judge Maze said the evidence of the three prosecution witnesses had unfolded like a child’s fairytale, with an ever increasing level of detail, none of which referred to the events the other witnesses described.

“It was a surprise to learn witness one was there, and attacked the defendant with a tennis racket,” she said. “It was an even bigger surprise to learn from the next witness, that he had his teeth knocked out. They could not even agree on the time.”

Daughters gutted by theft of mother’s rings

The grieving family of a woman who died last year has been hurt again, this time by opportunist burglars who stole jewellery belonging to the deceased woman.

The Princes Street house was broken into some time over the weekend; either Friday evening or Saturday.

The jewellery items stolen included rings, necklaces and a watch. They were personal pieces left by the deceased woman for her daughters. They had major sentimental value to the family.

The daughters were not ready to remove their mother’s personal jewellery from the family home, so had left them with their father.

“It was the jewellery she wore all the time,” said one daughter.

She hoped to get the jewellery back as they were irreplaceable.

“Having people break into your home makes you feel vulnerable but having something to remember her by is not something you want to lose,” she said.

Ashburton Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen suspicious behavior in the area over the weekend. They would also like to hear from anyone who has been offered similar jewellery items or seen them advertised.

Children copy the actions of others, even their unhealthy behaviours, say Community and Public Health, as the organisation heads toward World Smokefree Day. The message Quit now – it’s about whanau is the theme for World Smokefree Day 2014 on May 31.

Ashburton-based health promoter for Community and Public Health, Carly McDowell, said children with parents who smoked were three times more likely to pick up the habit.

She said World Smokefree Day aimed to encourage and support friends, families and whanau across New Zealand to quit and create environments where children had no exposure to tobacco.

“We know that parents, whether they are smokers or not, feel very strongly about not exposing children to smoking,” Mrs McDowell said.

“Children see their parents smoke and this has a strong effect on what they perceive as normal.”

“Parents, whanau and caregivers can make positive changes to the environment children are growing up in, even if they smoke.

“Talking to their children about smoking and establishing smokefree rules like not smoking around children, keeping the house and car smokefree is a fantastic start and a step in the right direction to protecting their children,” said Mrs McDowell.

World Smokefree Day was an opportunity to work together to achieve the goal of a Smokefree Aotearoa 2025, to encourage and support people to quit for a future where future generations would enjoy tobacco-free lives.

“Join with smokers and nonsmokers alike, all around the world, and be a role model for the wellbeing of your family in 2014; it’s about whanau,” Mrs McDowell said.

Look up, engage with the real world Coen Lammers EDITOR

T

here is a wonderful video clip going around on social media sites questioning the way we interact in modern society.

The clip is called Look Up and encourages us all to look up from our screens a bit more, and actually engage with the real world.

It rightly points out that sitting in your room by yourself and “talking” to your friends through Facebook, email or texting does not equate to human interaction.

Sadly, younger generations are starting to miss out on a host of moments in their lives that older generations have used to learn and grow and give them a sense of belonging.

We have three primary school children in my family, with two in their early teens trying hard to be moody teenagers.

Like most parents we try to monitor and limit the time they spend in front of the television, on the computer, iPad, and their own and other children’s iPods and mobile phones, but with mixed success.

During the recent school holidays my 10-year-old was a bit nervous about meeting new people on a YMCA holiday camp in Banks Peninsula, but I was more intrigued about how he was going to cope without television, iPod or computer for seven whole days.

Since he rolled off the bus, predictably tired, dirty and sunburned, he never spoke of missing his gadgets, instead he talked about the games he enjoyed, the friends he made and how they didn’t even get bored when it rained for days. Instead of lingering in front of the fire, the kids were told to put on their wet-weather gear and hit the bush.

This experience has taught me that we need to try harder to get our kids away from their screens and encourage them to engage with other humans.

It will not only grow their social skills but also increase their sense of belonging and community that you don’t get from a text message or 100 likes.

YOUR VIEW Fluoride? No thanks As we are potentially looking again at a resurgence of fluoride being added to our town water supply, I challenge people to do their own research, if in doubt it helps just to follow the money trail.

Given that we all are made up of 75 per cent water our bodies need to be nourished with water as nature provides, not as man has manipulated and added to.

The technologies are certainly there now for us all to have free access to water rich in minerals, oxygen and higher than blood PH level.

It would make much more sense to have magnesium added to our water.

ast week I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the Mid Canterbury Migrants and Newcomers Research Report.

The report is the combined effort of a local working group including the Community Development Worker from Safer Ashburton and the Settling In programme at the Ministry of Development and also includes stories and experiences shared by many of Ashburton district’s newcomers and migrants themselves.

The findings in the report provide us with an invaluable insight into how migrants and newcomers are settling into our community and equally importantly, identify some things we need to keep working on to ensure we are a welcoming community.

For those of you who have travelled or worked overseas yourselves, you will know all too well that at times when you are in a new town or country – especially where you do not speak the local language – it can be quite daunting getting

to grips with how things are done and coping with daily challenges.

Whether you are at work, school, joining a sports team, church or getting involved in other community activities, friendly faces and supportive colleagues and/or peers not only help you feel appreciated and part of things, they also help you settle into a community more quickly.

Newcomers contribute to the social, cultural and economic strength of our district and Council has recognised for a long time that attracting new residents to Ashburton is vital to continue the district’s economic development.

Newcomers also make our community a more vibrant place to live.

Our Multicultural Bite event is a great example of this vi-

brancy and the growing diversity in Ashburton District. It also represents an ideal chance for us to learn more about all that people of other nationalities offer our district.

Likewise, the Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network is further testament of how much our community is constantly evolving, with a membership today of around 195, including at least 30 different nationalities.

As Mayor, one of the most satisfying aspects of my role is seeing newcomers become New Zealand citizens at our monthly citizenship ceremonies. They are a reminder of how proud I am to be part of a community that embraces diversity.

As a community, I ask you to continue to appreciate and support newcomers – your contribution does make a difference.

Abuse compo $21m

BY EOIN BLACKWELL The Christian Brothers has no future unless the order confronts the devastation caused by child sexual abuse, says one of its most senior officials, amid revelations the congregation has spent $21 million in compensation claims.

Julian McDonald, the deputy provincial leader for the Christian Brothers Province of Oceania, yesterday told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse that victims were being “chopped up” by lengthy litigation.

“I said at the recent Christian Brothers chapter in Nairobi: ‘There’s no future for the Christian Brothers until we address the devastation that some of our brothers have caused by child sexual abuse - no future unless and until we do that,’“ he said.

He said he has told religious

leaders “not to go the way of litigation”.

“My concern is the people who were chopped up in the process - whose lives had been messed up because of what happened to them way back there then, and who were now, in one sense, being re-abused by this whole process,” he said.

The commission heard that between January 1980 and June 2013 the order received 775 complaints of sexual, physical or psychological abuse, from more than 500 people. The Christian brothers spent almost $21 million compensating the vast majority of those claimants, at an average of $50,000 each.

In the mid-1990s, the order settled multiple abuse allegations in WA for a total of $5 million - a figure offered by the Christian Brothers in response to victims’ opening position of $30 million.

Doctors warn of opioid addiction Opioid pain killers are far more addictive than previously thought and doctors are being urged to assess their patients’ level of risk before writing a prescription.

The issue is whether opioid treatment is going to make an addict out of someone, says Professor Jane Ballantyne, a pain specialist at the University of Washington.

“A lot of people who get into trouble with opioids say the whole thing started when they were prescribed opioids for acute pain,” she told an Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) conference in Singapore yesterday.

Opioids are safest when administered in hospital.

However, it is common for codeine and oxycodone to be prescribed for out-patients after surgery, dental treatment or injuries.

“We used to say people would not become addicted, but unfortunately that’s not true,” said Prof Ballantyne.

Although only a minority of patients develop problems, it is essential for doctors to do a quick risk assessment for every patient.

This could be done in five minutes with just four questions, she said.

Those most at risk include people with any history of substance abuse, including smoking.

People with mental health issues like depression, anxiety and personality disorders are also vulnerable.

A Frenchman and his four young children, whose skeletal remains were found in a submerged car in Cambodia two years ago, were murdered, a judge says, after a probe by forensic experts. The family’s badly decomposed bodies were discovered inside widower Laurent Vallier’s white four-wheel drive vehicle after it was retrieved from a large pond behind his house in southern Kampong Speu province in January 2012. Chhim Rithy, a Cambodian investigating judge at Kampong Speu, said tests carried out in conjunction with French experts on the remains showed that Vallier and three of the four children did not die from drowning. “It means they died before being (put in the car) and were pushed into the water.” - AFP

New form of bird flu A new kind of bird flu has been detected for the first time in Adelie penguins in Antarctica, though the virus does not seem to make them sick, researchers say. The virus is unlike any other avian flu known to science, said the report published yesterday in mBio, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology. “It raises a lot of unanswered questions,” said study author Aeron Hurt, senior research scientist at the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in Melbourne, Australia.

The findings show that “avian influenza viruses can get down to Antarctica and be maintained in penguin populations”, he said. The study is the first to report on live avian influenza virus in penguins, though previous research has found evidence of influenza antibodies in penguin blood. - AFP

Reserve Bank governor Graeme Wheeler is scheduled to speak to the DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum in Hamilton today on the significance of dairy to the New Zealand economy.

The bank will release its latest six-monthly Financial Stability report next Wednesday.

In Fonterra Cooperative Group’s last GlobalDairyTrade auction in April, dairy product prices extended their slide to a 14-month low, paced by whole milk powder, raising speculation the company’s forecast record milk payout may not be sustainable.

In February, Fonterra raised its forecast payout to farmers to a record $8.65 per kilogram of milk solids for the 2013/14 season.

Since then, the GDT price index has dropped almost 20 per cent. Nick Tuffley, chief economist at ASB, said he now expects the milk payout this season to recede back to $8.50 per kgMS. Total agricultural lending rose 5.5 perc ent in the year through June 2013, down from 15 percent growth in 2009, according to Reserve Bank figures.

Christchurch-based agribusiness company Scales Corp said its net profit rose by 20 per cent to $20.4 million in calendar 2013. The company’s total revenue increased 17.2 per cent on 2012 to $278.1 million, with higher apple volumes and prices the single largest contributor. Managing director Andy Borland said 2013 had been a strong year for the business with strong performances from all three divisions. Scales was once part of South Canterbury Finance, which collapsed under a mountain of debt in August 2010. The company is now majority-owned by investment - APNZ company Direct Capital.

Big hitters join Gentrack Software company Gentrack yesterday appointed Graham Shaw and Andy Coupe as independent directors in what insiders said was a sign that the company was progressing towards a listing on the NZX. Gentrack, which provides software solutions for airports, energy utilities and water companies, is understood to be considering a full listing on the NZX some time over the next few months.

One source said the inclusion of the two “heavy hitters” on the board was an indication that the company was keen on proceeding with an initial public offer and share market float.

Coupe has extensive commercial and capital markets experience and is a former investment banking consultant at UBS New Zealand, Gentrack said in a statement.

He is deputy chairman of the New Zealand Takeovers Panel, chairman of Farmright - a dairy farm investment specialist - a director of NZX-listed investment funds Kingfish, Barramundi and Marlin Global, and a director of Solid Energy.

Coupe is also a member of the Institute of Directors and the Institute of Finance Professionals New Zealand.

New Zealand’s rural lending, which more than doubled to an all-time high of $50.6 billion in the past decade on dairy farm expansion, may slow as farmers use record milk payouts to reduce debt, spurred on by rising interest rates.

In the past 10 years to June 30, 2013, agricultural debt has risen mostly due to the dairy sector where lending has almost tripled to $32.4 billion.

The surge in lending to the dairy industry far exceeds the $1.4 billion debt owed by sheep farmers and $1.2 billion accrued by beef cattle farmers, according to Reserve Bank figures.

Dairy sector lending has soared as farmers have invested in converting land to dairy farming to take advantage of high milk prices and the asso-

ciated strong growth in farm land prices, the central bank said in its last Financial Stability report in November.

Indebted dairy farmers will be weighing up using high dairy payouts to pay down debt or increase farm investment in anticipation of a positive outlook, it said.

Since then, the bank has begun to raise interest rates, hiking the benchmark twice in as many months, and milk prices have weakened in response to increased production.

“With historically low interest rates and very good returns, it’s been a good time to be repaying debt in most dairy farming businesses,” said Brent Love, an agricultural specialist at KPMG in Timaru.

“Rising interest rates certainly make debt servicing in those dairy businesses more expensive.

SkyCity Entertainment Group chief financial officer James Burrell, who had been seen as a potential leader of the casino and hotel operator, has resigned for family reasons and will return to the UK. Burrell, who chief executive Nigel Morrison named as a potential successor in an interview with the New Zealand Herald last month, will step down from the company at the end of June to shift his family back to the UK, SkyCity said in a statement.

The company’s shares have gained 8.6 per cent this year.

Little India at home Responsibilities I

ndia’s would be one of the best loved of all cuisines, but often the complex blend of spices used makes it seem a bit too hard for the home cook to replicate.

However, with a helping hand from a good cook book, Indian food, like most other cuisines, need not be complicated or complex.

Twenty-two years ago the first Little India restaurant opened in New Zealand and there are now a string of these across the country from Auckland to Invercargill, showcasing the best food from northern India.

The restaurants are about home style food and for the first time, the chain’s owners have captured those recipes in a book that has adapted restaurant style food for the home kitchen.

Prawn Jhalfrezee 3T canola oil 6 cloves 2 x 5cm long sticks cinnamon 1 t carom seeds 1 t ground coriander 1 onion, finely diced 1T crushed fresh garlic 1 T crushed fresh ginger 1 t ground turmeric 1 1/2t garam masala 1 t salt 2 medium tomatoes diced 2 T tomato paste 24 large prawn cutlets, deveined and shells removed 1 bunch spring onions, chopped 1 red pepper, julienned 1/2C coconut milk Salt Red chilli powder to taste Chopped spring onion and fresh

■ Heat oil in lge pan.

■ Add cloves, cinnamon sticks, carom seeds and ground coriander ■ Cook until you start to smell aromas ■ Add onions, stirring so they don’t stick to the pan ■ Cook, until almost brown and add garlic and ginger ■ Cook until softened and brown ■ Add turmeric, garam masala, and salt.

■ Continue cooking until you can smell the spice aromas ■ Stir through tomato and tomato paste ■ Keep cooking until you see oil separating from onion and spice mixture ■ Add prawn cutlets, spring onion and capsicum ■ Stir through the tomato mixture.

■ Turn heat down low and stir through coconut milk ■ Cook 7-10 mins until prawns cooked but still juicy ■ Season to taste with salt and chilli powder ■ Garnish with spring onion and fresh coriander.

Aloo gobi 3 T canola oil 11/2t cumin seeds 1 onion finely diced 1 T crushed fresh garlic 1 T crushed fresh ginger 2 t ground turmeric 11/2t garam masala 1 t salt 2 medium tomatoes, diced 1 green chilli, seeded and finely chopped 6 medium agria potatoes, peeled and cut into 2cm cubed and cooked until tender 1/2 cauliflower cut into florets and boiled until just tender

■ Heat oil in large pan over low heat ■ Add cumin seeds and cook until aroma comes through ■ Add onion, stirring so it doesn’t stick and cook until golden ■ Stir in garlic and ginger and cook until browned and softened ■ Add turmeric, garam masala, and salt and continue cooking until aroma comes through ■ Stir through tomato and green chilli ■ Keep cooking until you see oil separating from onion and spice mixture ■ Stir potato and cauliflower through ■ Cook until both are soft enough to cut easily with a knife ■ Season well ■ Garnish with fresh coriander.

his week Age Concern Ashburton has been undergoing a peer review of its operations and services, an initiative of the national body to ensure all of its branches adhere to their goals and objectives in providing for the needs of the senior people of the district.

It is all about responsibilities to the wider organisation and to our community. Apart from the time consuming exercise locating all the correct documents, it is good to do a stocktake of your activities from time to time.. Often we are so busy providing day-to-day operations and we don’t take enough time to ensure we are meeting our responsibilities.

One of our goals of responsibility is to work together to promote quality of life through health, safety and independence through appropriate services and programmes.

This year we have successfully launched an exercise programme devised over 10 years ago by health professionals in Otago for Age Concern Otago.

Locally we have appointed Dianne Moss to co-ordinate Steady As You Go classes and there are now four classes active in our community. It is a unique concept of low cost, low impact with no referral necessary.

Dianne Moss has been trained by the Otago team and is excited at the response to date in Ashburton. (There is even a waiting list).

responsibilities for our own health and welfare but in our golden years we sometimes need a little help and Age Concern can offer that help.

But what of a section of the younger generation that do not take responsibility seriously. During the week I was held up in traffic in the south end of town while a long train travelled through the town.

Because of its length all crossings of course were blocked causing a huge traffic build-up. In this confusion young lads from the nearby skate park apparently found it exciting to weave in and out of the stationary vehicles.

Then horrors some of the lads decided to take a train ride between the containers, admittedly only for a short distance before they jumped clear, but, what if they had tripped.

Who would be blamed?

Certainly not the train driver who would be unaware of the situation. The responsibility lies clearly with the young lads who recklessly took risks.

I guess we all took stupid risks in our youthful enthusiasm but I believe we were taught to respect life for ourselves and for others.

Keep safe, be responsible, act sensibly.

Beef fajitas 600g Quality Mark beef strips (see Cook’s Tips) Olive oil (see Cook’s Tips) 1 t ground cumin 1 t sweet paprika 1 small red onion, shredded 1 small red capsicum, shredded 1 small green capsicum, shredded 1 small lime Tortillas, sour cream, grated cheese and lettuce to serve ■ Coat beef strips with olive oil, sprinkle with ground cumin and sweet paprika, season well with salt and pepper. Preheat a non-stick pan to moderately-hot.

■ Cook the beef in three batches.

Cook the first side until the first sign of moisture appears on the uncooked side, turn and cook the other side of the beef strips. Remove

each batch and set aside.

■ Add onion and capsicum to the pan, cook for 1 minute. Return beef to pan, stir to warm and squeeze the juice from a fresh lime over the beef. Remove beef from pan immediately.

■ Serve beef with warmed tortillas, sour cream, grated cheese and lettuce.

■ Cook’s tips: Best beef cuts for stirfrying: Use beef stir-fry strips, or prepare your own from scotch fillet, sirloin or rump. Coat the meat in oil instead of adding oil to the pan or wok. You use less oil this way. You can also add ingredients like a little soy or grated ginger for flavour. Use your fingers to massage the oil into the meat strips.

Ashburton artist Tina Yeatman is still buzzing after a successful show at the Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition.

The 50th exhibition finished last Friday.

She was the only local guest artist on the billing and the popularity of her eclectic pieces saw the majority of the 13 pieces sold during the exhibition.

The items sold between $110 and $780.

Her latest works included the art form of Doodling using repetitive lines, curves, patterns and shapes to form unstructured pieces.

“With a keen eye for fine, miniature work, this type of art is extremely enjoyable to me,” she said.

Mrs Yeatman started painting 14 years ago, taking opportunities to create when her children were young. She has no formal training.

She plans to open her own home-based art studio on the outskirts of Ashburton and teach others her skills.

At the beginning of her varied career, Mrs Yeatman started using stencilled rocks from the Rangitata River.

They were painted and sold at markets and fairs.

Now her pieces fetch good prices and have developed into highly sought after works.

With the majority of her varied pieces sold, it lets her know she is on the right track.

lery using products gathered from the local area.

Her passion for native New Zealand shows in her work.

In past exhibitions with the society she has won a merit award as well as the Rosebank Village Local Award, and the Unique Jewellery Local Award.

The latter awards were both in 2013.

Among her current exhibit were two wooden boards on which she painted intricate birds. Mrs Yeatman said she

had completed a commission for a client where the works were put onto triple glazed glass and placed by a front door entrance way.

The light passing through the glass artwork had proved effective as a great decorative piece with function.

In her later art years she started to experiment with texture and different mediums.

The coastal landscape and materials became an important factor in her works.

“Living close to the coast, I began a love affair with the local rugged beach,” she said.

“I visited most days and it became my inspiration for most of my art.”

“I like to incorporate small flat stones onto my paintings.”

She also uses sand and shells.

Mrs Yeatman is a regular entrant in the art society’s exhibitions and has sold art locally and offshore with clients in Australia, America, England and Sweden.

Born in Yugoslavia and now living in New Zealand, oil painter Vjekoslav Nemesh has been inspired by his new country.

When war began in Serbia Mr Nemesh looked overseas for emigration opportunities, and while many of his fellow countrymen considered Australia, it was New Zealand which captured his heart.

“Each country has the vibrations so Australia doesn’t really resonate for me,” Mr Nemesh said.

He feels it was destiny in some respects, as the year before he emigrated he painted a work of art he entitled Ateroa, without ever having come across the actual word for New Zealand,

Aotearoa, before.

Once New Zealand was confirmed as his destiny, the green, black and cream striations of kiwifruit were included in some of his works.

Mr Nemesh’s colourful and enchanting works are on display at Terrace Downs after an opening held at the upmarket Rakaia Gorge resort last week. Some of the works, which range in price up to $6700, sold on the night.

Mr Nemesh said he liked “living and breathing” art, and what people saw on the canvas was the result of 30 years of development.

“Not only technically, there is also spiritual growth involved, which has drastically changed my paintings.”

In brief Hurrell named to start Konrad Hurrell has been named in the starting line-up for the Warriors on Saturday, although the club don’t know if he will still be available to play as the NRL’s integrity unit investigate an embarrassing sex video involving the centre. The 22-year-old was involved in a sex tape with Shortland Street actress Teuila Blakely which was made public briefly on social media. Both the Warriors and NRL have launched an investigation and integrity unit boss Jim Doyle has said the incident is a concern for the game, particularly as it kicked off their Women in League week. “At this stage he is [available for selection] but I’m still waiting on the integrity unit to come back with a decision,” Warriors interim coach Andrew McFadden said.

Liverpool’s hopes shredded Liverpool’s English Premier League title bid looks to be over after Crystal Palace mounted a sensational comeback from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at Selhurst Park yesterday.

Liverpool were well on course to move three points clear of Manchester City after quick-fire Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez added second-half goals to Joe Allen’s 18th-minute header.

But with Liverpool pushing forward in pursuit of City’s superior goal difference, Damien Delaney struck in the 79th minute before substitute Dwight Gayle scored twice to demolish the Reds’ hopes of a first title since 1990.

Socceroos midfielder Mile Jedinak hailed the spirit of his Palace team-mates, who looked relegation certainties before manager Tony Pulis arrived in November and guided them to mid-table safety.

“We didn’t get the victory but it was great to get a comeback like that against a top, top team,” the Palace skipper said.

“We didn’t really want to concede three goals, a couple of set-pieces and whatnot ... so it’s not ideal, but obviously the character again worked.

“It’s the character shown by the lads and that’s what’s been a big part of our success.

“That, along with the presence here of the fans and what

they’ve been doing this season has been immense.

“I hope they can enjoy that (result) as much as we can.”

Not everyone enjoyed it.

The comeback left Suarez and several visiting fans in tears, while Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers called his side’s defending “criminal”.

Rodgers admitted the result was difficult to stomach, but said that Liverpool should not lose sight of the progress that they have made since he took over in June 2012.

“It’s 99 goals we’re on, this season. The season before I came in, the team had finished on 47. For us to keep improving like we have been gives me im-

mense pride,” Rodgers said.

“When we’ve got time to reflect on this at the end of the season, we will see it has been an outstanding season for Liverpool.

“It does not take away the pain of now, but we will look where we need to improve and continue to get better.”

Liverpool lead the league again, by a point, but City now effectively need only four points from their last two games to claim the title.

They host Aston Villa overnight before welcoming West Ham to the Etihad Stadium on the final day. With a nine-goal advantage over Liverpool, the title is theirs to lose.

Tate signs on for another NRL season

BY ED JACKSON The remarkable career of indefatigable representative back Brent Tate will extend into a 15th NRL campaign.

Tate, who has overcome several serious injuries since debuting in 2001, has signed a one-year contract extension with North Queensland.

The 32-year-old will now remain with the Cowboys until at least the end of the 2015 season.

After debuting for Brisbane in 2001, Tate overcame a potentially career-ending neck injury three years later.

He would go on to win the 2006 NRL premiership with the Broncos. After announcing

he was leaving the Broncos to join the Warriors, Tate’s time in Brisbane came to a premature end when he injured a knee during the third State of Origin fixture in 2007.

A second knee reconstruction during his three-year stint in Auckland ruled him out for most of the 2009 campaign.

Despite those injury woes,

Tate joined the Cowboys in 2011 and has gone on to play 63 games for the club, making his 200th NRL appearance last season.

He has also regained his Queensland jersey since his move to Townsville, playing all six games in the past two years to take his tally to 21 appearances for the Maroons. - AAP

St George Illawarra five-eighth Gareth Widdop has welcomed the idea of Benji Marshall joining him in the Dragons’ halves. The Dragons are favourites to snare the signature of the former Wests Tigers’ superstar, but the NRL club wasn’t commenting publicly yesterday amid media reports chief executive Peter Doust was meeting the Dragons’ board to discuss Marshall’s acquisition. Marshall is expected to make a decision on his new home this week with Cronulla the only other club left in the running for his services.

Villeneuve in comeback Former Formula One and IndyCar champion Jacques Villeneuve has passed his Indianapolis 500 orientation course. The Canadian is attempting a comeback at age 42, while Kurt Busch also passed his orientation as he aims to become only the fourth racer to complete the Indianapolis 500 and a 600-mile (966-kilometre) stock car event in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the same day. Busch, coming off a crash in a stock care race the day before, completed 180 laps and reached the top speed of the session at 357.7km/h He also practised pit stops.

Wiggins eyes Tour spot Former Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins will lead the Sky team in the Tour of California that starts this weekend in Sacramento.

Britain’s Wiggins is among the field of 128 cyclists announced for the eight-day, 1159-kilometre race that starts Sunday and concludes on May 18 in Thousand Oaks, west of Los Angeles. Joining Wiggins are Omega Pharma-QuickStep’s Mark Cavendish of Britain and Cannondale’s Peter Sagan, the Slovakian who currently holds the record for the most California stage victories at 10.

In brief Aussie Jewels raiders The Australian assault on the Jewels looks set to double and maybe then some. Four more invites to harness racing’s glamour day at Cambridge on May 31 have been issued, with one almost certain acceptor. Kiwi-bred juvenile pacer Padrisimo will return home for his $150,000 division with trainer Andy Gath a regular visitor to New Zealand. But two of the other invites will be turned down, with the 2-year-old filly invitation to Bamako Mali under consideration.

Fairytale Derby win A horse with a humble pedigree.

A couple of working-class owners. A 77-year-old trainer with his first Kentucky Derby horse. Even Hollywood couldn’t have made this up. California Chrome made it look easy, pulling away down the stretch to win the Derby by a length. Art Sherman became the oldest trainer to win the Derby, 57 years after he travelled from California as an exercise rider for Derby winner Swaps. He watched that race from the barn area; this time he was smelling the red roses in the winner’s circle. “It’s been a long haul,” Sherman said, smiling. “I’m just the same old Art Sherman, except I won the Kentucky Derby.”

A tidy field of young pacers proved they could have a good future on the track in the first of the day at yesterday’s Chertsey Trotting Club trials.

A blustery nor-wester made racing conditions trying, but that did nothing to hamper the flying hooves of runners

in race one who smashed the qualifying time of 3.13.0 for the 2400m.

Murray Edmond and Judys McArdle were all business from the barrier, moving straight into the lead and holding that position for most of the distance. Judys McArdle

had Ricky May and the Brendon Hill-trained Mach Winger sitting on her tail until the final 500 metres. When May gave the Mach Three-Fast Winger three-year-old the nod he stepped up the pace and powered home to win by a length.

Chris Paul scored 17 of his 32 points in the first quarter as the Los Angeles Clippers routed Oklahoma City 122-105 in their NBA playoff series opener yesterday.

The Clippers seized control early and never let up, leading by as many as 29 points en route to the triumph that gave them a 1-0 lead in their bestof-seven Western Conference second-round series.

Paul shook off a right hamstring injury and sprained left thumb, connecting on his first eight three-point attempts and missing only two of his 14 attempts overall.

He threw in 10 assists for good measure as the Clippers showed no hangover from a tough seven-game first-round tussle with Golden State that was played in the shadow of the controversy over racially charged comments that got owner Donald Sterling banned for life from all league activities.

The Clippers shot a sizzling 54.9 per cent from the field and connected on 15 of 29 from three-point range.

Blake Griffin scored 23 points while Jamal Crawford contributed 17 points off the bench.

The Thunder, who were coming off their own punishing seven-game series against the Memphis Grizzlies, received characteristically strong outings from Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Neutral referee likely Brian Minto, the man who effectively ended Shane Cameron’s professional career, has asked for a neutral referee for his fight against Joseph Parker in July and his wish is likely to be granted. A jetlagged but amiable Minto arrived for his press conference announcing the fight against New Zealand heavyweight Parker in Auckland yesterday only to be accused of being a “dirty fighter” by promotor Dean Lonergan because of the tactics the American employed in his impressive victory over Cameron in December last year.

As Ma’a Nonu continues to attract the attention of defenders everywhere, few of his team-mates are better placed to take advantage than the irrepressible Charles Piutau, the only player to have appeared in every minute for the Blues this season. Piutau made a rare foray into the midfield in the final minutes of the 44-14 victory over the Reds at Eden Park, but is so important as an attacking threat at the back for John Kirwan’s team that the coach is wary about making the move more permanent in the wake of the long-term injuries to Francis Saili and Jackson Willison. Lillee has been credited for reigniting the career of Ashes hero Johnson, but will cease his consultancy work with Australia’s pack of fast bowlers after failing to agree to terms for a contract renewal. We are seeking a qualified Early Childhood Teacher or Teacher in their third year of study to work in our infants and toddler room.

The person we are seeking must be mature, passionate and enthusiastic about early childhood. You must be a team player, have a high level of professionalism, motivation and organisational skills.

Southland driver Glenn Frew will chase a fourth straight AutoSparks Street Sprints title this weekend.

The 25th anniversary of the Street Sprints this weekend will have Southland’s Glenn Frew looking to be the first person to win four straight titles.

The inaugural Street Sprints event in 1990 was won by Graeme Vaughan in a Formula Ford with a top time of 2:37.29, and he took out the event for the

next two years before Jim Spillane won a hat-trick of titles.

Spillane also won in 1997 and again in 2000, and remains the winningest driver in the event’s history.

Neville Stowell won in 2001.

Grant Milligan went back to back and Carl Vaughan claimed two titles before the event was rained off without crowning a champion in 2006.

Stowell then won three straight titles, before James Marshall set the course record of 2:23.25 on his way to winning in 2010, and the event has since belonged exclusively to Frew.

Frew and his Mitsubishi Evo comfortably won the final showdown with Christchurch’s Mark Higgins last year to be the last man standing, and he is heading back this year in an

attempt to repeat the feat for a fourth time.

One of the potential challengers is Tim Cook, who has made the final four in the last three years, finishing runner-up twice, and was again running hot on the heels of Frew last year before his Mitsubishi Lancer ran into gearbox issues on the first lap of his final four run.

Stowell also remains a con-

tender for a fifth title if he can avoid an unwanted hat-trick, bowing out in the later knockout stages with mechanical failure two years in a row.

The weekend will again start with 54 drivers on Saturday morning which will eventually be cut down to 32 to begin the series of eliminations, and finish with a two car shootout on Sunday afternoon.
