Over the next few years Ashburton will become home to hundreds of refugees. The town yesterday joined Whanganui, Timaru, Blenheim, Masterton and Levin as it became New Zealand’s latest refugee settlement location, following the Government’s decision last year to increase its annual quota from 1000 to 1500 from July next year. Yesterday Immigration New Zealand made the announcement, saying Ashburton had ticked all the boxes for the cross-government New Zealand Refugee Resettlement Strategy Senior Officials’ Group. Refugee division national manager Andrew Lockhart said Ashburton had a relatively low demand on public housing, good employment opportunities,

Division personnel would meet directly with the Ashburton District Council to inform about settlement support available, and then work with
the council to engage communities and providers. About 10 to 15 Quota refugees (three to five families) will arrive at each of the six new locations, with the same number arriving every six to eight weeks thereafter.
