Ashburton police are investigating a break-in at the Devon Tavern on Saturday morning, which occurred amidst a weekend of alcohol-fuelled offending. The tavern was entered at about 2.30am and the offenders made off with a quantity of alcohol and a charity box. Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said a group of youths well known to police were found nearby, but

the incident was still under investigation. Meanwhile, other youths affiliated with the group, which has been running amok in Ashburton for the past 12 months, were arrested for disorderly behaviour on Saturday evening near the Burger King restaurant on the corner of South and East streets. Police have been keeping close watch on the group of about nine serial offenders, aged between 14 and 16, who have been tagged as responsible for the bulk of recent youth crime. As well as attending a fatal vehicle crash in which one person died on the Methven Highway at about 3.30am on Sunday, police
